For almost a century superheroes, masked adventurers, and supervillians have dominated the imagination and the streets of world. They helped win World War II in a relatively quick and clean fashion, but superpowered beings have also held various cities and even countries at hostage with their elaborate schemes, doomsday weapons, and terrible powers; their heroic brethren bailing us out of their designs most of the time.

For seven years the Justice League, a team of superheros acting in concert, has acted with the permission of the UN to protect the world from threats human, natural, superhuman, and supernatural. They’ve done a great job, but the work is getting harder and harder as the years pass. To help aid them, they’ve allowed their sidekicks and younger heroes to join together as a Team and take ‘smaller’ jobs and missions.

You’re Marton Baxter, the nephew and protegee of Animal Man, and a member of Young Justice

Conner stays with you and the Baker family for another three days before the Justice League comes and finds a more stable living situation for him. Ostensibly stable anyone, since you hear that he was dumped in what was supposed to be your new headquarters, with a rotating list of superheros acting as baby sister or guardian or whatever. Honestly it seemed kinda shitty to you.

Ellen cooked a pretty big breakfast for you, somehow Ellen had won convincing Buddy that free range eggs wouldn’t contradict his brand of vegetarianism. It was good, but the entire time you shoved down food your gullet, you kept wondering what Ellen would do if she knew what Buddy and you were up too. Did she know?

You cleaned the dishes and then took a five or six minute walk to the local Zeta Tube. It was almost a ritual now. What wasn’t was the four other members of your newly formed team. You run over to join the others; Wonder Woman going to join Batman, Red Tornado, Flash, Aquaman, and Black Canary. Around you, two of the Green Lanterns and Zatara were clearing out junk and installing large pieces of machinery and computers into the place. If you had to guess, by the rocks and stones around you, this was a cave or mountain. You chat with them for a while discussing this and what you think you'll be doing next, making sure to compliment Conner for actually being so practical with his uniform, with it just being a shirt and jeans after all. He snorts that no everyone's uniform disappeared and reappeared at will when they used their powers.

Batman clears his throat, preventing you from trying to even think of a comeback to that.

"This cave was the original sanctuary of the Justice League. We're calling it into service again, since you have decided to proceed and stay together to fight the good fight. You'll do it on League terms though." Batman turns to face you, menacingly. You knew was he wasn't going to hurt you, but he just pulled it off so well. "Red Tornado has volunteered to live here and act as your supervisor; Black Canary is in charge of your training; and I will deploy you on missions. Real missions. Not PR stunts and not minor disaster relief. You will get hit, you will get knocked down, and you will have to get back up again. No half measures, understood?" Batman says.

"Sweet." Robin says. "You are serious right? Not pulling our leg you did last time?"

"The League will still handle the global level threats and major powers. There is a reason we have these big targets on our chest. We're the ones they're going after first."
>>
>>2822792

"But the bad guys are getting smarter and better organized. We're thinking about expanding our ranks again...but the world just needs more help in general. That's what Batman selected the six of you for the team." Aquaman adds

"I'm not that great at math, but you're off by one Aquaman." You say, rubbing your chin; you have a feeling where this is going. New sidekick incoming.

You hear a Zeta tube go off and rattle some off numbers that in the future might mean something to you, but don't know. Behind you you see the Martian Manhunter stroll up you with a martian girl at his side. While his dark blue cape covered his entire body, her's didn't; revealing underneath a white shirt with a red x shape on it, and a blue skirt. A redhead too, with long flowing hair that went down to her shoulders. She was more than pretty, she was stunning, but in a way Hollywood would still bill as the girl next door. Well, you'd have to put Wally on a leash, least he slobber all over her.

"This is the Martian Manhunter's niece, Miss Martian." Batman says.

She waves her hand sheepishly. "Hi."

Wally leans over to Robin, eyebrow raised. "Liking this gig more every minute."

He struts over to her, causing you to facepalm yourself and hiss in disgust. Total corndog. "Welcome abroad, I'm Kid Flash. That's Robin, that there is Changeling, here's Aqualad and Superboy. It's cool if you forget their names."

"I'm honored." Miss Martian replies, still a little bit sheepish.

"Hey, Superboy, come meet Miss M!" Robin shouts, waving from Superboy to Miss Martian. He joins you, dragging his feet a little bit and with a frown on his face.

Suddenly Miss Martian's white blouse shifts to black, getting shorter and into the shape of a t-shirt like...Superboy's. "I like your shirt."

Superboy finally smiles at that and offers her a hand.

> Make a more personal introduction to Miss Martian; unlike everyone else here on the team she probably knows nothing about you and you will be working togehter

Could we ask Superboy if he wants to move back in, with Buddy's approval? It sounds like the League's done a pretty crap job of suitably housing him, if he's living in this actual, honest to god souped up cave and being chaperoned by a rotating roster of Superheroes, and I assume we're still not hurting for space or money.

"So how did the Justice League treat you?" You ask, both trying to get the atmosphere a little lighter here and get to know Superboy a bit more. "You where with them for a couple of days on the Watchtower; did a hero accidentally reveal his secret identity to you?"

"I spent most of my time on the satellite in the medical bay or an interrogation room to make sure that I wasn't going to go off and kill everyone or something. Then they dumped me here" Superboy says, almost spitting. "Wonder Woman, Batman, and Black Canary told me to call them if I needed anything, but I barley spoke two words to them. Wally and Flash stayed for awhile though. It was really gross watching him eat.

“Yeah, you never get used to it.” You say, more than a little disgusted. "So...Superman said nothing to you?" You ask, frowning.

"No. I haven't seen him since the Cadmus incident." Superboy says, his voice is trailing off.

You frown, “You know I’m sure Buddy wouldn’t mind setting you up longer man. You got along with well with Maxine and Cliff, they defintely wouldn’t mind either. Why not come stay with us if...”

“SAVE YOUR PITY” Superboy yells, his face flashing red. After about five minutes, the flash turns into a blush and he coughs and looks away. “S-sorry. Look I don’t wanna leech on you guys, you’re all family and I’m not. Thank you for the offer though. Seriously, I kinda dunno why I blew up like that.

“It’s alright man,” you say. “But if you change your mind, you know our number.”

M’gann was taking to the rest of the group now and laughing nervously at one of Wally pick up lines.

“Hey M’gann,” you say, walking up to her and offering your hand. “So how do you like Earth so far? How long have you been here?”

M’gann smiles and takes your hand warmly, “It’s so great here. Can you believe this HBO thing? That show old show Sopranos we just got on Mars, it was so amazing! My entire family wants me send up the entire boxset, wait until they find about Game of Thrones, Rome, Veep, and Ballers! This planet is like walking on a giant movie set or museum.”

“Wait, Martians’ like TV?” You ask, a little dumbfounded.
M’gann giggled, “Yeah, this might surprise you, but we think Earth is like an artist colony, filled with brillant writers and poets, misunderstood geniuses and painters, and scenic landscapes. Like when my uncle started uploading Earth art to Mars, it was a gamechanger. But yeah, in paricular, all Martians love television. Earth paintings or novels might suit your taste, but everyone sits down and watching Seinfeld or Third Rock From the Sun.”

“You know if you like movies and television, and are curious how all that gets made, my uncle Buddy is a stuntman and would be happy to give you a backstage pass.”

M’gann starting hopping up and down screaming, “Are you serious? That’s so cool! Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou….”

When she hugs you, you can feel Wally stare daggers at you. “Dude, that’s so unfair.”

Batman coughs, “Are you finished yet? Because if so, we can finally start some training and then I can assign you a mission.”

The jumping around and joking suddenly and abruptly come to a stop.

The others are useful, but we can save diversifying our skillset until after we've improved on our original powers. Plus I mean if we turn into giant bugs, we'd benefit immensely. Imagine what we could do with an elephant sized ant that could lift 20 times it's body weight?

You decide to start the session off working flexing whatever that Red mojo was that granted your powers. You no desire to break the roof off your powers today, no. Instead you decided if you could broaden whatever you already had. Which amounted to, honestly, a lot of sitting and meditating while everyone flexed their muscles and gadgets.

After an hour or so sitting down in the midst of chaos, you got up to do what you already knew you could now. You shifted into a bullet ant, but instead of shrinking you determined that you would stay the same size as you are now. It was a little surreal shifting into the ant and have a giant sized smell o’ vision and weird eyesight, but Wally’s screams of terror told you, you were doing something right. Next you decide to half shift into a hawk, granting your from wings and powerful talons. You lifted yourself off the ground and flew across and around the room a few times. You tired to add the properties of a tortoise, but realized for sure that you couldn’t do that yet.

You shifted back into a human...but realized you were still flying and still felt like you had the strength of dozens of men.

“Ah, dude I didn’t realize you could like turn into a werehawk or whatever,” Wally says, other heroes and teammates gathered around him to gawk at you. “Where are your feathers outside your wings man? Why do you have antenna and those weird buffy forearms but nothing else antlike, what gives?”

“I...dunno?” You say, before you fall to the ground. It seemed you were closer to attaining Animal Man’s powers. Unlike in your animal forms, your chimera and “mostly” human forms had a time limit, about a half hour to an hour. But you knew with training, unlike Buddy, you could extend that limit. Also like him, you could probably gather even more animals powers for your own.

You give yourself a breather before going to Aqualad and Miss Martian, asking if you could join them in training regime. For the next two hours you moved together and tried using your abilities together as one. You mostly did well. You almost hit Kaldur with skunk odor at one point.

Batman coughs, and then steps forward in the makeshift circle in the center and starts speaking. "Good job, you will have training sessions like this three times a week as long as you’re part of this team. You miss one and unless it’s under special circumstances you’re out. No three strikes, immediately out. Now onto business. Your first missions. I have connected a string of robberies of high end bio research firms throughout America. I have ascertained that next theft will be Dakota City and will occur in about a week. I however do not know the culprit. Robin, Marton and M'gann I want you three to investigate it; M'gann and Marton are new to this, I need you as steady hands and I except you to show them both respect and the ropes, understood? Green Arrow and Hawkman are guarding her now, but will be indisposed in two days for personal reasons and other obligations throughout the galaxy."

>can you tell us anything else about the robberies?

“Can you tell me anything else about the robberies?” You ask.

Batman glances towards and struts over, dropping a usp into your hand. “Yes, there seems to be a single mastermind at work here, with all the accomplishes being pawns and dupes. No items, equipment, or merchandise is stolen, only data. There was no movement in any of their bank accounts before or after the thefts. Each of the people arrested after each arrest had varying philosophies and personalities that would have been normally incompatible for cooperation for the most part.”

“Furthermore,” he continued, dryly. “All of them maintain they don’t remember the incident that lead to their arrest or the days prior; also Martian Manhunter mind reading backs up their claims. Each is collected for their abilities or powers if it pertains to successfully pulling off a theft and the immediately released when whoever pulls it off leaves with data or blueprints.”

He looks over the three of you. “Would you be ready in four days to start the mission. A stipend will be granted for expenses, so don’t worry about that.”

Can we ask Batman about what happens to the criminals after the data has been stolen? Do they just regain control of themselves after they've done the one job the mastermind has them do, at which point they're usually apprehended, or does the mastermind reuse people for multiple robberies? Having trouble wording this the way I want to.
>>
>>2823726
I'll answer it here, assume Bats told it to you.

The mastermind minions are USUALLY one and done. One was caught on site for multiple robberies. And they usually regain full control of themselves, no worse for where. They just happen to stay still long enough enough for cops to cuff them. Usually, one suspect made her escape.
>>
>>2823743
So they reuse the same people for multiple robberies, if they manage to succeed and escape?
>>
>>2823749
If they have the skills they need for next mission. One bad guy just managed to slip from his cuffs and avoid being taken into jail.
>>
>>2823761
Perfect. So proposed plan: We stop the next robbery, but let one of the more important puppets escape. One of us (We're probably best suited to this, being able to assume a small, unobtrusive form, like a flea) tracks/hitches a ride on/tails the "Escaped" puppet, hopefully back to wherever they go between their jobs. If the Mastermind is smart, they probably won't lead us directly to wherever the Mastermind is, maybe to some safehouse where they're stored between jobs instead, but assuming the Mastermind at least supplies them with what they need at wherever they hole up between robberies, we'll have another lead to follow. Keep following up through those leads, and we'll probably get to the Mastermind eventually. Or maybe the Mastermind is stupid, or their mind control is limited in some way, and the one who we initially follow will lead us right to them, if we're lucky.

The next few days go by in a blur, the only thing you really remembering is that you manage to finagle a couple passes out of your uncle for some new movie with Ryan Gosling that he was stunting for. Drive or something. Made by some Danish dude, whom you remember being good from his Pusher films.

You know up a half-hour early, just to notice that you somehow are still the last person there.

"Recognized B-04 Changeling" A robotic voice called out blankly as you store across the room. While Miss Martian looked happy to see you, Robin looked like he wanted to spit.

You look at him, “What, I’m here early!”

“This isn’t a high school football team,” Robin says, “Try to take this a little seriously, this is our first day and people rely on us.”

“I should have figured,” You say, sighing, “You know he is the only person on the team who hasn’t shared his secret identity yet? He’s too uptight.”

Robin laughs, “Man it could be worse, I couldn’t be tight at all, like you and Wally are. You’ve got to have some discipline man.”

“Oh come, that’s a little unfair, comparing me to Wally, “You say, a little wounded honestly. “When have I ever hit an EMT during the middle of a mission?

"Located set. Dakota City, Minnesota." The Zeta transporter churned on, emitting a constant bright light.

All of you, besides Robin look around, hoping to see Batman or at least Red Tornado. But neither of them where there, no one there to give you a rundown or extended briefing. You see Robin just walk into the teleporter and vanish, while Miss Martian and you stay and look. It only takes two minutes but you feel your ear piece buzz like a mosquitoes in your ear until you slap with a free hand on.

Batman's familiar gruff voice is a little more stern than usual. "What's the hold up? I thought I told you to be at Dakota City two minutes ago?"

"But we need..." You start.

"You've already received a mission briefing three days ago, along with the necessary files and background on this case, the unknown culprits, and their target. If you need access to them at any time to look something over, you have the PDA we gave you." He says, curtly
>>
>>2823907

The two of you look at each other and then walk through the Zeta transporter. You all are spat out in the middle of a dilapidated building that despite the presence dog sized rats, is completely structurally sound. One scurries by your feet and you let out a short yelp, kicking at it to make it go away and bribing up a storm of junk and bottles as you do so. The floor is covered in nothing but filth; broken needles, crushed beer cans, various pieces of debris, and of course the universal heaps of dust. You let out a yuck, personally not caring if it ruined Miss Martian view of your masculinity. You weren't the type to stoically wade through garbage and rodents.

"You coming?" Robin calls from outside. "I'm heading to S.H.R.E.Ds' headquarters to get the lowdown in the security at Avla Technologies.”

"Well I'll head over Aleva Technologies. See if they have inside guy or what's not on their lab's blueprints" Miss Martian says softly.

Even in uniform and with two calls from the Justice League confirming your identity, it still takes Avla Technologies an hour to even arrange a tour of the facilities. Yes, they had everything at top of the line, military grade security. You still knew it wasn’t going to enough from the list of places the mastermind had hit up: if Cyberware could be hit, so could this taco stand.

The unfailing polite and disingenuously demure secretary smiled again, “As you can see Alva Technologies is practically impenetrable; while you assistance in apprehending what will be a failed attempt will be appreciated, there is no to disrupt activities here.”

“While this is impressive, we haven’t seen the bottom left of the building,” you say, try to imitate her level of politeness. “The thieves might try to enter from there, can we take a look?”

“I’m sorry but radioactive materials are being stored there, we would need to wear a clean suit to enter safely. Them entering there...would be impossible or rather fatal, Alva Technologies won’t be held legally accountable for anyone trespassing there.

“Hey, M’gann, could you read this woman’s mind,” you ask underneath your breath. “That explanation makes zero sense. They could find a suit themselves after all, especially if they’re raiding this facility and know the facts before hand.”

M’gann stares at her with a smile on her face, as her voice suddenly booms in your head. “Of course, you don’t need to talk out loud either you know. And while it’s a lie...she knows there is something dangerous down there. Biological and chemical, not radioactive.
