(Oh my God, this is probably the dumbest idea for a quest)

You wake up to the sound of birds chirping outside your window. You look at your alarm clock, and for once in your life you haven't overslept. You get out of bed- and promptly stub your toe on your KaibaCorp-made Duel Disk. Ow! You should be more careful where you put it...

What is your name?

>Yutaka (Male protagonist)
>Yukari (Female protagonist)

char gen is a very bad idea bla bla bla etc This quest is alredy dead.
And yes, little girl, always little girl.

You are Yukari Kuromatsu. You pack your bookbag with your homework and textbooks, have a quick breakfast, and head off for school. Taking your usual route, you come to a familiar fork in the road. Usually, you go left, as that's the fastest way to school, but you could take the scenic route through Cappa City and still make it to class before the bell.

>This choice may not seem like much, but it will determine the plot for this Quest.

>Go left: This quest will have a fairly down-to-earth plot. You'll get to pick a Deck and customize it, and you'll interact with Quest-original characters.
>Go right. BALLS TO THE WALL INSANITY. Ludicrously over the top plotline. Quest-original cards will make an appearance. Get a pre-determined deck (that will change to suit your needs) and interact with characters from the show.

>Go right.

You decide that a little change will do you some good. You take the road on the right.

It's a pretty quiet walk- you walk past a park, past a fountain, and past a couple cafes. The smells of pastries and coffee are pleasing to the senses.

The roaring sound of an engine followed by screeching tires and screaming customers? Not so much.

You only get a second to see a car speeding at you, completely out of control-

Blackness. Total, utter blackness.

>Beep...beep...beep.

Your eyes flutter open to see a bright light above you. You blink a few times, eyes adjusting to the bright light. You look around and find yourself in a hospital bed.

Your mother and father are at the foot of your bed, and look beside themselves with relief to see you wake up. "OhmygodKenichi-" your mom says quickly, her exclamation coming out like one word.

A doctor enters the room. "Well, that's a first..." he says, looking at some charts. He looks up, sees you're awake, and blinks in surprise. "...Huh."

"What's going on?" you ask, feeling a little groggy. You look outside to see the sun setting- wait, setting?

The one time you're not going late for class, you get hit by a car?! That's not even fair!

"Oh...I got hit by a car...didn't I?" you ask as memories of the last thing you saw come back to you.

"Honestly, it's a miracle." says the doctor. "That car was going over 60 kilometers per hour when it hit you- yet here you are, with just a couple minor bruises to show for it! You, little lady, are one lucky girl."

"So she can come home, right?" asks your dad, sounding concerned. You smile a little. You can always count on your parents watching out for you.

"She could, but I'd prefer if we kept her overnight just to make sure we didn't miss something serious." says the doctor.

Your mother seems apprehensive of letting you stay here, wanting to bring you home as soon as humanly possible, but your dad manages to persuade her into letting the hospital keep an eye on you.

After your parents leave, the nurses bring you some food. It's pretty bland stuff, but hunger is the best spice, and you've had nothing to eat for the past 15 or so hours.

At about 10:00, you begin to doze off when a bright light in the hallway catches your eye...

>Get out of bed and investigate.

You slowly get out of bed. Your legs wobble due to the fact that you have been bed-ridden for most of the day, but you manage to keep your balance.

You tiptoe out of your hospital room to find yourself in the...empty hallway? That can't be right, there's got to be someone working night shift here.

The light seems to be coming from the end of the hallway. You slowly walk towards it, and it gets brighter the closer you get...and bigger. It starts to engulf the hallway-

Brilliant, blinding light.

You blink your eyes and see you're no longer in the hallway. Or the hospital.

You're not even sure if you're stil in Cappa City.

The place you see around you is a vast, glistening city, like something out of a science fiction movie. Flying cars soar over your head as people walk around with countless high tech gadgets in tow. "This has to be a dream..." you mutter, walking forward.

"Yukari Kuromatsu?" asks the voice of a man. You turn to see a man in what looks like some sort of futuristic uniform, like from the Star Trek shows dad watches.

"Oh God, I've got brain damage, don't I?" you ask with barely concealed terror. The man shakes his head. "No, no, don't worry." he says. "Everything will be explained. Could you follow me?'

He walks towards a platform, and what you assume to be a flying police car descends from the sky. "Get in," he says.

Normally, you wouldn't get in a car with a stranger, but things are far from normal right now. You get in the car, and the strange man begins flying the car.

You eventually arrive at what looks like a police station. Robots of vaguely humanoid shape staff the front desks and keep the floors clean as you and the man walk in. "My name's Lieutenant Wataru Maguro , and this is the Headquarters of the Global Timekeeping Police."

"Timekeeping Police...?" you repeat. "What, do you make sure everyone's on Daylight Savings Time?"

Wataru chuckles. "No, it's a little more complex then that...here in the year 2508, we've finally figured out how to travel through time. Unfortunately, all new innovations eventually get used for wicked ends, so it's up to us to stop the timelines from getting all screwed up by excessive tampering..."

"Which is why we brought you here."

You and Wataru turn to see an ethereally beautiful woman with white hair and a black turtleneck.
"My name is Commander Reana Togari," says the woman, crossing her arms. "Quite frankly, we're in dire need of your help."

"Huh? Why me?" you ask.

Reana beckons for you to follow her. Wataru follows behind you as you're lead into what looks like a briefing room.

"About a week ago- relative to our time, not yours- a man did something believed to be very dangerous." began Reana. "He travelled back in time."

You give the Commander a confused look. "But...didn't you go back in time to get me?" you ask. "No, we brought you FORWARD in time." explains Wataru. "It's easy to go into the future, but into the past? Well, that's when things get dicey."

"If a person goes back and time and changes the past, they have no memories of the past they originally had- only the new past they made. Some even wipe their own existences clean of reality." continues the Commander.

"But there's an exception...special cases." adds Wataru. "There's a little bit of pre-determinism in time- details are a little fuzzy, but apparently there are supposed to be fixed points in time. However, when someone deviates from the fixed point, they become unstuck in time. Like you."

You feel like a 10-ton rock has been dropped on you. "Unstuck in time?! Me?!"

The Commander nods. "You were never meant to take that turn this morning...by making a choice that strayed from future events, you changed the timeline. A man was supposed to be hit by that car and die, but because you were there, he lived. This man isn't of much importance, but your action is."

"It's kinda like scripting from computer RPGs." says Wataru. "If something doesn't go according to the game script, the game freaks out. So, to prevent a paradox, the universe unglued you from linear time. Which is better than it sounds, actually."

"How so?" you ask.

"Remember how we told you going to the past is dangerous for people?" asks Wataru. "You don't have to worry about it. Your existence and memories are time-proof."

Yeah it's pretty cool.
>>
>>2830736

A holographic projection fills the room, showing a man in his 30s or 40s looking at you with a scowl.

"This is the man that travelled back in time." exposits the Commander. "No real name on the record, but he goes by the codename 'Orwell'. He's a known terrorist and megalomaniac who uses Solid Vision as weapons. He's got a group of six followers called Belial following his orders, scattered across six points in the timelines. Our best shot at finding him and figuring out his plans is to arrest all the Belial members. And that's where you come in."

Wataru gives you a sympathetic look. "I know this is gonna sound like a lot to ask, but we need you to help us capture these guys. They could seriously wreck the timelines if they're left unchecked."

"We've lost too many agents to loss of memory or cessation of existence to send more of our own." says the Commander. "Your existence is a one-in-a-billion fluke that the universe needs to stop Orwell."

"How would I even catch them? I'm just a teenager." you say.

"In a Duel." says Wataru.

".... You're kidding me, right?"

"Trust me, there's a lot of weird details about how Duel Monsters became a sort of keystone to the cosmos, but that requires a LOT of explaining." Wataru says dismissively. "But there's a more practical reason to Duel them. If you can get them to duel you, we can get a precise trace on them and drag them back here the same way we got you here."

You look to the Commander.

"...Just so I know what's on the line, how much damage they could do?" you ask nervously. Her expression is grim. "The least they could do is rewrite history to their whims. Worst case scenario? They cause paradox after paradox until the entire space-time continuum collapses in on itself."

"...So the fate of the universe rests on a card game, huh?" you asks. Wataru chuckles wryly. "Believe me, kid, this ain't the first time that's been the case."

"I'm not that good of a Duelist..." you say meekly, looking down at your feet. "But... When you put it that way, I really can't refuse..."

The Commander gives you a small but confident smile. "I think we can help you with your dueling." she says quietly.

She reaches into a desk drawer and unlocks something before pulling out a pristine looking Deck of Duel Monsters cards. "Specially made cards on commissionfrom Industrial Illusions. One of a kind, made to adapt to any Dueling format. Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, Pendulum and Link summoning all in one deck."

She hands you the Deck and you carefully look through it. You've...Never seen anything like these cards.

(Looks good to me. You'll be given opportunities to edit your Deck later, and you will get new Timegear cards as the plot progresses.)

(Also, have a Timegear Champion with an effect.)

You look through your Deck again. "You said that these adapt to any format? Does this mean I won't be able to use some of these cards in certain time periods?"

The Commander nods. "That is correct. However, the Deck will automatically change its contents to temporarily remove and replace any unusable cards. After all, we can't have you Link Summoning or Xyz Summoning during the Fusion Deck format."

"How will my Deck change?" you ask.

Wataru walks in- apparently he stepped out while you were examining your deck. He's caring a rather large attache case. "This is how." he says.

You're sure your dad would say something about 'chameleon circuits' if he was hearing this...

We built it in case the timeline was changed to prevent the creation of the first time machine and keep documents on how to build one, but it's also good for keeping records safe from time-based tampering. The Ritual Spell card shows itself to you before adding itself to Janus's hand. "Now, I activate 'Ritual of Destruction'. I Tribute Charging Gaia The Fierce Knight from my hand to Summon the Level 7 Ritual Monster Garlandorf, King of Destruction!"

A card vanishes from Janus's hand in a cloud of black fire as a dark-purple sigil lights up your opponent's field. A figure rises out of the sigil- a vicious-looking armored demon who snarls at you as it glares at you with blood-red eyes.

You gulp nervously. That's a pretty scary monster...

That's not how Trap Hole Works, only normal and flip summons.
Also pro tip: Do NOT try doing Tag Duels unless you think it's necessary or you control both players somehow. Having to write up 3 turns each time in a way that doesn't decide the game on without your interaction is tiring af, mark my words. Unless you really want to do it or something I'd stick to single duels cause tags burn out writing plays like a bitch.
Have fun

>Can't activate Trap Hole, lol.

"Garlandolf's effect activates. All face-up monsters with less DEF than Garlandolf's ATK are destroyed." says Janus. "Affected monsters include: Sonic Bird."

Sonic Bird squawked in terror as the demon suddenly grabbed it by the neck and hoisted it up. The bird flapped its wings furiously in an attempt to escape, only to be consumed by black flames.

"Garlandolf gains 100 ATK for every monster destroyed by its effect." adds Janus. Garlandolf opens its mouth, and the black flame is sucked into its toothy maw.

Garlandolf's ATK: 2500 -> 2600

"Proceeding to Battle Phase.' says Janus. "Garlandolf, attack her facedown monster!"

>Activate Mirror Force
"Not so fast!" you say. "I activate the Trap Card Mirror Force! Because you attacked, all your Attack Position monsters get destroyed!"

Garlandolf charges at you, only to slam into an iridescent barrier and shatter against it.

"Well played..." remarks Janus. "Proceeding to Main Phase 2. I activate 'Pre-Preperation of Rites, allowing me to add a Ritual Spell to my hand from my Deck as well as a Ritual Monster listed by that Ritual Spell. I add 'Ritual of Grace' and 'Divine Grace - Northwemko' to my hand. Now, I end my turn."

You look at Timegear Gentleman and try to remember what every Timegear could do...Synchron...Field Agent...Engineer-

Your eyes go wide with a revelation. All these cards fit together like cogs in a machine. You grin. you're about to win in one move. "You're time's run out, Janus- this Duel's mine!" you proclaim. "First, I Summon Timegear Gentleman in Attack Position!"

The dapper steampunk automaton manifests in front of you, daintly holding a cup of hot tea. "Gentleman's effect lets me pick a Timegear monster out of my Deck and either banish it or add it to my hand. I banish Timegear Engineer!"

"An unorthodox play." comments Janus. "Most Duelists would rather add monsters to their hand."

"I'm just getting started!" you retort. "When Timegear Engineer is banished, she lets me add a different Timegear monster from my Deck to my hand. I think 'Timegear Lawman' will do the trick!"

You pull the cards from your Deck, banishing the Engineer and adding the Lawman to your hand. "Now, I flip my face-down monster face-up! Show yourself, Timegear Initiate!"

The young engineering savant emerged from her card with a cheer. "Now that I have two face-up Timegear cards, I can bring out my Link Monster!"

Gentleman and Initiate turn into orbs of red light as a square flanked by eight arrow heads forms on the field. "Circuit open! Link 2, Timegear Colossus!"

The sound of grinding gears and hissing steam fills the room as a metal giant that has to crouch in order to fit in the room appears in front of you.

"2000 ATK? My Ritual Monsters could easily defeat that." remarks Janus. I-Is the computer trying to trash talk you?! You have half a mind to turn Janus to a pile of broken boards.

"Don't think for a minute that I'm done here!" you say. "Colossus has its own effect-when I Link Summon it, I can Special Summon as many banished Timegear monsters as possible to Monster Zones it points to! I've only got one, but she's all I need- come back, Timegear Engineer!"

The white haired engineer girl emerged, standing on one of Colossus's shoulders. She glared menacingly at the supercomputer, tapping the side of her hammer against an open palm.

"Now, I activate the effect of Timegear Dragon! By banishing 2 Timegears from my Graveyard, I can Special Summon it from my hand!"

The sound of tearing metal and mechanical roars fills the room as a giant dragon built from brass materializes. hot steam billowing from its nostrils as it sizes up the supercomputer. "Finally, I activate the effect of my Timegear Lawman- once per Duel, if I have 2 or more banished Timegear monsters, I can Special Summon him directly from my hand!"

The grizzled old sherrif with the mechanical arm and customized revolver strides out on to the battlefield, glaring at Janus.

"Oh dear..." Janus says quietly. You smile. "That's one way of putting it...Dragon, Colossus, and Lawman, attack Janus directly!"

Gunfire, pounding fists, and scalding steam came down upon Janus.

You win!

Wataru stares at you slack-jawed. "How'd yo- I nev- that's the-"

After a few more moments of unintelligible spluttering, he shakes his head. "And you told us you were a bad Duelist!" he says, sounding amazed. At some point, the Commander must have walked in, because you see her standing next to Wataru, looking impressed. "That was a remarkable victory, Yukari." says Commander. "If you possess that much skill, I have complete faith you'll be able to help us catch the members of Belial."

You shrug. "I just drew a good hand." you say, downplaying your win. Nevertheless, the Commander looks at you with approval. "Now that you've got acquainted with your deck, we can get to figuring out which member of Belial we'll be taking on first."

You are brought to a much larger, empty room with a large screen mounted to the wall. "These are the six points in the timelines we picked up evidence of time travel from the future...two of them are relatively close to one another and share a timeline. The third one seems to be part of a branch of the timeline the first two signals are on...but there's a branch point right after the signal, which is concering. There's a whole other branch with two more signals on it, but there's signs that someone from that branch went to the other branch and back to their own branch...we have no idea what that means...The fifth signal's a bit odd...it's on a timeline that has a massive gap in it, like something broke the timeline. Finally, there's a sixth signal that seems closest to the current year here. We can send you to one of the six signals, but it's a bad idea to bring you back until we can get a bead on the Belial member in that time period."

You point to the graph that shows the timelines. "Well, the beginning's a good place to start." you say, indicating the first signal.

You take a deep breath and nod.

"Alright, initiating time warp." says Wataru. Your HIND glows gold as light fills the room.

Suddenly, you're overwhelmed with the sensation of falling. When it stops, you're standing in an empty alley.

You walk up to the building- a sign nearby reveals it's called the Kaiba Dome- as the crowd looks on anxiously. Firefighters try to bust down the door, but to no avail. "What's going on?" you ask.

"The dueling computer inside's been hacked!" says a bystander. "It's locked the doors and won't let anyone out unless someone beats it!"

"Look who's Dueling it now!" says another bystander. You peer through the window to see a figure every Duelist in the world- heck, in every time period- recognizes: the King of Games himself, Yugi Muto.

"Why isn't he using his Dark Magician?" asks a civilian.

"Didn't you see? He's substituting for a kid who was supposed to duel when the computer freaked out!"
"Can he even beat that thing with a kid's deck? That thing played Five-Headed Dragon during its last duel!"

You watch as the duel between the computer and Yugi begins. True to form, Yugi snatches victory from the jaws of defeat. The doors unlock, and the trapped spectators rush out. During the aftermath, your HIND (now disguised as a Battle City-model Disk) begins blinking.

<Incoming report from Janus!> it chirps, audio coming in from your earpiece. You shuffle off to an isolated spot as a holographic display pops up.

<Out-of-place person confirmed: Name unknown. Alias: Verne. Predictive model implicates Verne will tamper with the result of the Grand Championship, giving duelist Rebecca Hawkins a set of powerful cards. Result of tampering: Leon Wilson does not duel Yugi Muto in title match, Zigfried Lloyd defeats Yugi Muto.>

The Commander speaks up. "So in order to stop the change in history, you'll have to find a way to enter the Championship. Janus, who must Yukari replace to face Verne before he causes Leon to fail the championship?"

<Buffering...buffering...Yukari must take the place of Totani Ialos- a stage magician turned Duelist. Then, she must defeat Rebecca Hawkins, and lose to Leon Wilson.>

"...give us a moment, Yukari." says the Commander. "We can arrange something."

"In this time period?" you ask. "How?"

"The first method of practical time travel was phone calls between time periods." says the Commander, sounding proud. "I think we can promise Mr. Ialos the gig of a lifetime."

A few hours later, you are sitting on a park bench awaiting further instructions from the GTP when a young boy you recognize as Mokuba Kaiba walks up. "Excuse me, are you Yukari Kuromatsu?"

You look to Mokuba. "Yes. You're Mokuba Kaiba? Why are you asking for me?"

"We had a participant for the Grand Championship drop out with no warning. We're desperate to get this championship started and we've been sent an email from your talent agent that you'd be willing to participate...apparently you're a big deal in the underground Dueling scene, so you're presence may give us the edge appeal we need to attract more spectators."

Dang. GTP knows what they're doing. Mokuba looks you up and down, eyeing your slightly ruffled clothes (you're still wearing the school uniform you were wearing during the accident) and groans. "Please tell me you've got something nicer to wear. We've got half an hour until we show the participants to the public..."

You blink- the kid's talking at a mile a minute. "Uh...no?"

Mokuba lets out an exasperated groan. "Uuuugh! Follow me!"

You stand like a statue, frozen with shock as you process what's going on. Mokuba grabs you by the wrist and drags you away, yelling "C'mon, lady, we're burning daylight!"

KaibaCorp PR workers get you dressed up in a classy-looking black dress and ready for the Opening Gala. Looking around, you see tons of Duelists, some you recognize: namely, Seto Kaiba, Joey Wheeler, and Yugi Muto.

You're not sure what to do here. It might look weird if you act like a wall flower, but GTP may not like it if you frivolously mingle with people from other time periods.

"Wow, I never thought I'd see udda people usin' my cards..." says Joey, sounding amazed.

Your chat is cut short, however, as the announcer has the participants come to the stage to be introduced.

The particpants include:

-Leon Wilson, a prodigy child with a perfect Duel record
-Fortune Salim, a robed and masked fortuneteller that gives you a funny feeling you can't explain...
-Shane Jordan, a guitar-toting cowboy
-Sergei Ivanoff, a Serbian body builder
-Paul McGregor, an Englishman who dresses like Sherlock Holmes
-Abe 'the Monkey Man' Luciano, a bucktoothed duelist with a pet monkey on his shoulder
-Richard Goat, a doctor
-Balfry Ginger, a young stage magician who tried and failed to impress the crowd with a pink smoke trick
-Yourself, introduced as 'the Queen of the Underground Dueling scene'
-Ethan Shark, an Australian champ Duelist
-Jafar Shin, a Duelist dressed in a simple robe and a turban. He didn't even stop meditating to introduce himself.
-Vivian Wong, the Chinese Duel Monsters champ, as well as a supermodel, actress, and a kung fu black belt. Clearly, she's extremely talented.
-Rebecca Hawkins, the girl you have to knock out of the running. Youngest person to ever hold the title of American Duel Monsters Champion.
-Joey Wheeler, Yugi Muto's close friend and though he's never been the champ, he's always come close.
-Apdnarg Otum, a mysterious old man in a mask. Yugi seems taken aback when he's introduced.

That seems to be the last of the contestants- which is literally odd, as that puts the number to 15. However, a well-dressed pink-haired man walks in and introduces himself as Zigfried Lloyd- the man that will beat Yugi if you don't lose to Leon.

You ruminate on this as you are brought to your assigned hotel room. You can't sleep- you're not just far from home, you're years away from it. On top of that, you have to crush a little girl's dreams to save the time-space continuum.

Maybe a distraction would help.

Since nobody amended the changes, I'll move along and say you can edit your deck later on in the arc.

The next day, the match-ups for the 16 Duelist Round are revealed: Zigfried Lloyd is going up against Fortune Salim, Rebecca Hawkins is up against Vivian Wong, Joey is up against Apdnarg Otum, and you will be facing Abe 'The Monkey Man' Luciano.

You watch the duels preceding yours- Apdnarg gives Joey a hard time with a Deck designed to turn Joey's luck style against him, but ultimately loses to Joey...Also, he was Yugi's grandfather in disguise.. Fortune Salim turned out to be Rex Raptor and Weevil Underwood impersonating a Duelist they kidnapped (?!). However, Zigfried still dueled them despite having the option to be declared winner by default. He still managed to beat them. Rebecca manages to beat Vivian with her Anti-Cure deck, despite Vivian's constant mockery and fawning over Yugi.

That just leaves you versus Abe.

"So, ready to get a monkey made out of you?" Abe taunts.

>"If your as good at Dueling as your dentist is at fixing teeth, I'd beat you in my sleep!"

You win the coin toss, going first.

TURN 1: YUKARI

Yukari: 4000 LP
Abe: 4000 LP

Your hand:

Trap Hole
Timegear Chronomotive
Temporal Storm
Timegear Iniitiate
Mystical Space Typhoon

Proceeding to Main Phase 1. What is your move?
>>
>>2834271
Set Trap Hole, Storm, and Initiate.
>>
>>2834280

You grimace. You were hoping to pull more monsters in your first turn. "I Set a monster and two face-down cards, and end my turn!" you say.

TURN 2: ABE

Yukari: 4000 LP
Abe: 4000 LP

"Alright, let's get this party started. Bobo!" Abe says with a grin. Wait, Bobo?

You watch as the monkey on Abe's shoulder scampers down his owner's arm to get a closer look at Abe's hand. Wait a minute- is the monkey doing what you think it's doing?!

The monkey lets out an 'ooh-ooh' and points to a set of cards. "Good call, Bobo!" says Abe, grabbing the cards the monkey picked.

"Hey! The monkey's playing for him!" yells one of the spectators. "Is that even legal?"

Everyone looks to the duel judge, who shrugs awkwardly. "I mean...there's no rule saying an animal CAN'T duel..." he says.

You facepalm.

"Bobo and I play Gyaku-Gire Panda in Attack Position, and Set 1 card facedown."

Pandas? That's a bit unexpected. But it only has 800 ATK, meaning you can't use Trap Hole on it.

"Gyaku-Gire Panda gains 500 ATK for every monster you control, bringing him up to 1300!"

Gyaku-Gire Panda: 800 ATK -> 1300 ATK

"Go, Gyaku-Gire Panda! Destroy her facedown monster with Bamboo Impaler!"

You grin. "Your Panda's power-up is nice, but it's not going to help you!" you say.

Initiate blocks the bamboo spear easily, shoving the berserk panda off to the side.

Abe: 4000 LP -> 3500 LP

"Grrrr..." snarls Abe. "I'll get you for that! End turn!"

TURN 3: Yukari

Yukari: 4000 LP
Abe: 3500 LP

Your Field: Timegear Initiate (D)
Trap Hole (FD) Temporal Storm (FD)

Your hand:

Timegear Chronomotive

You draw:
Timegear Gentleman

No effect to activate during Standby Phase. What is your move?
>>
>>2834291
Attacking a face-down monster with something that only has 1,300 attack...

Maybe it's just my preference for monsters with high defense like Giant Soldier of Stone or Mystical Elf but that didn't seem like the wisest decision ever.

As far as what to do next, I actually have no idea what any of our Timegear cards do so I'll just abstain from this vote.

"I activate the Spell Card Mystical Space Typhoon!" you declare, putting the Spell Card into one of your Spell/Trap Slots. A hurricane opens up above the playing field. "It lets me destroy a Spell or Trap Card on the field- so you can kiss your facedown goodbye!"

A bolt of lightning comes down, obliterating Abe's facedown card. "Noooo!" wails Abe, his pet monkey chittering furiously. "My Sakuretsu Armor!"

"You're gonna lose more than just your Trap Card!" you say with a wide grin. "I'm playing another Spell- Chronomotive!"

A massive brass train covered in glowing blue canisters and intricate steam-powered mechanisms materializes on the field. "Chonomotive lets me pick a Level 5 or lower Timegear monster from my Deck and add it to my hand!"

The time-travelling train begins chugging forward on unseen rails before driving into a portal. A second portal opens up, and the train drives by to show a hologram of a care package being thrown out the engine driver's station window towards you.

"With Chronomotive's effect, I add 'Timegear Field Agent' to my hand, so I can Summon her in Attack Position."

The young woman with the braided pigtails emerged, a pair of loaded pistols at the ready.

"So what?" sneers Abe. "You're only making my Panda stronger!"

You smirk smugly. "You might wanna check Field Agent's ATK before you say that."

Color drains from Abe's face. "Oh no..." he mutters.

You grin. "Field Agent, destroy his Gyaku-Gire Panda! Deadeye Quickshot!"

The Field Agent brings her pistols to bear, unloading shot after shot into the Panda.

Abe: 3500 LP -> 3400 LP

"Timegear Initiate, attack directly! Wrench Slam!" you command. The Initiate grins cheekily before producing a massive pipe wrench from what seems like thin air. She charges and wallops Abe upside the head with a loud 'CLANG'.

Abe: 3400 LP -> 2700 LP
You grin. "I end my turn." you say. Abe gives you a dirty look.

TURN 4: ABE

Yukari: 4000 LP
Abe: 2700 LP

Abe draws a card- and a smiles deviously. "You're gonna get it now..." he says quietly. "Isn't that right, Bobo?"

The pet monkey lets out a screeching laugh and nods vigorously.

"First, Bobo and I play the Spell Card 'Hammer Shot'," says Abe. "Which destroys the monster with the highest ATK on the field!" Without warning, a giant wooden mallet comes down from above and smashes Field Agent into non-existence.

"Now that you're Field Agent's out of the way, I Summon Berserk Gorilla!"

A massive gorilla with red fur and burning eyes appears in front of Abe with a furious roar.

"Berserk Gorilla's a wild one- he has to stay in Attack Position and has to attack whenever he can, but he packs a mean punch!" says Abe, grinning like an overexcited chimp. "Berserk Gorilla, attack her Timegear Initiate!"

The Initiate doesn't stand a chance- the feral beast picks her up by the arm and shakes her like a ragdoll, violently slamming her into the ground a few times before tossing her aside like a broken toy.

You shoot Abe a death-glare. "Alright, the kid gloves are coming off." you say. "First, I Summon Timegear Gentleman in Attack Position, allowing me to add a Timegear monster to my hand! I choose 'Timegear Lawman'!"

You banish Field Agent and Initiate from your Graveyard. "Honestly, I should thank you for destroying my monsters, Abe." you say. "Because now I can activate the effect of my Timegear Dragon, and Special Summon it from my hand by banishing 2 Timegear monsters from my Graveyard!"

Clouds part as Timegear Dragon descends from the sky with a mechanical roar. The crowd looks on in awe at the mechanical marvel.

"That's so cool!"
"Mommy, I want one of those cards!"
"Omigod, I gotta get a Timegear deck!"

Abe and Bobo let out simulataneous screams of terror.

"I'm just getting started!" you say. "I've got another monster that I can Special Summon from my hand when I have two or more banished Timegear monsters! Lock and load, Timegear Lawman!"

A dust storm picks up, and the cyborg gunslinger emerges from the cloud with dramatic flourish.

"Nononononononono!" squeals Abe, clutching at his head and staring at your monsters in disbelief. "This can't be happening! Nobody can recover that fast!"

"Guess again, monkey boy." you say with a grin. Might as well play up your cover story. "This is how they do it in the Underground- we take no prisoners!"

You point a finger at the Gorilla, who pounds its chest in a futile attempt to look like he's still top banana on the field. "Timegear Dragon, get rid of that overgrown circus monkey!" you bark. The clockwork dragon roars as steam gushes from its mouth and nose, engulfing the primate like a gorilla in the mist. When the steam clears, nothing but charred bones remain.

Abe: 2700 -> 2200

"Oh my God..." moans Abe. You smile. "Your time's run out, Abe. Gentleman, Lawman, would you do the honors of tanning this baboon's hide?"

Lawman twirls his revolver and Gentleman cracks his 'knuckles' before charging at the Duelist. Gunshots and flying fist barrage Abe, knocking him backwards.

Abe: 2200 LP -> 0 LP

The Quarter-Finals begin with Joey dueling Zigfried Lloyd. At first, Joey bricks, but Zigfried barely puts up a fight, not getting serious until Joey attacks him directly. Yugi- who looks shorter than you remember him being- seems to agree. "Yukari's right, Joey. Even with a bad hand, you put up a really good fight."

Joey shrugs. "Eh, I dunno...that pink-haired creep was pretty much sleepin' at the wheel until Jinzo gave him a wake-up call. i don't got a Deck that can give me the cards I need when I need 'em like Yukari."

One of Joey and Yugi's friends- a tall brown haired man named Tristan, who you got acquainted with in the Duels preceeding yours- looks to you. "Speaking of which, I don't think I've ever seen a Deck like yours, Yukari. Where'd you get them?"

"Your secret's safe with us!" promises Tristan.

"Good luck.." says Yugi. ."Rebecca's a friend of ours, so don't be upset if you hear us cheering for her- we'll cheer you on, too!"

The loudspeakers of the arena crackle to life. "Rebecca Hawkins and Yukari Kuromatsu, report to the dueling field. Your match begins in five minutes."

"Well, that's my cue." you say. You head down to the Dueling field where you come face-to-face with Rebecca. Despite her young age, there's a pro-Duelist's fire in her eyes. You almost feel sad you have to beat her.

Sadly, the time-space continuum takes no pity on children- you have to do what you have to do.

Rebecca: 4000 LP -> 5000 LP

You draw another card, and find yourself looking upon the goofy, toy-like visage of Time Wizard.

Well, your Timegears are probably gonna run rough-shod over Rebecca's Deck. Might as well have a little fun!

"I set a face-down card, then play a monster face-down in Defense Position." you say. "It's your turn."

"Next, I activate the Spell Card 'Silent Doom', which lets me Special Summon a Normal Monster from my Graveyard in Defense Position!" says Rebecca. "So I'll summon the card I discarded for Tribute to the Doomed, Luster Dragon #2!"

From the sky descends a dragon of emerald that shines in the sun, dazzling the audience. "Next, I Summon Fire Princess in Attack Position!"

The flame-clad noblewoman emerges, flames dancing across her fingers.

"After that, I set two cards face-down and attack you directly with Fire Princess!"

"I Summon Timegear Field Agent in Attack Position, and attack your Luster Dragon #2!" you declare. Field Agent appears and unloads a barrage of gunfire into the emerald dragon, destroying it. Rebecca grimaces, but has no card to respond to it

"I end my turn." you say.

TURN 4: REBECCA

Yukari: 4000 LP
Rebecca 5000 LP

"Draw!" shouts Rebecca, pulling a card from her Deck in that overly-dramatic flourish every pro Duelist seems to use. She takes a look at her pull- and smiles like a kid in a candy shop.

"I Summon Injection Fairy Lily in Attack Position!"

An angelic nurse with the BIGGEST SYRINGE YOU'VE EVER SEEN appears on Rebecca's side of the field.

"Injection Fairy Lily has a special ability- when it battles, I can pay 2000 Life Points to increase her ATK by 3000 during damage calculation."

Oh! That's- actually really powerful. You're starting to think that Rebecca's going to be a lot harder to beat than Abe.

"Go, Injection Fairy Lily! Execution Needle!"

Rebecca: 5000 LP -> 3000 LP
Injection Fairy Lily: 400 ATK -> 3400 ATK

The cutesy-looking fairy nurse suddenly displays a sadistic side of herself, impaling Field Agent through the heart with the hypodermic needle.

Yukari: 4000 LP -> 2500 LP

"With that, I end my turn." says Rebecca. "I'm not just some little kid you can toy around with!"

TURN 5: YUKARI

Yukari: 2500 LP
Rebecca: 3000 LP

GY: Mirror Force, Time Wizard, Timegear Field Agent

Hand:
Timegear Lawman
Super Polymerization
Timegear Dragon

You draw:
Timegear Gentleman

What is your move?
>>
>>2837480
>NS Gentleman in DEF, Add Field Agent to hand
>Set Super Polymerization as a bluff
I'm thinking we should let Gentleman get screwed over and then SS Dragon and Lawman. Attacking her now means she can use Lily's effect again to knock us down to 700 LP and then if she draws another monster card, we're fucked.
>>
>>2837527
Actually wait, what the fuck am I talking about. Super Polymerization and DEF mode would deter an attack and the use of Lily. For a more risky approach, I think we can attack with Gentleman and then SS Dragon and Lawman in Main Phase 2?

A completely and utterly unrelated question: what happens if we lose? Do we just go back again via time shenanigans?

...uh, just re-read what you wrote down. You can't Normal Summon a monster in Face-Up defense position.

You can only:
-Put Gentleman in Attack Position, getting his effect but leaving you open for another attack
OR
-Put Gentleman face-down in Defense Position, protecting yourself but not getting the effect.
>>
>>2837688
In that case, just summon it face-down. I thought we were going by anime rules.
>>
>>2837693

You grimace. You'll have to play defensively until you can deal with her Injection Fairy Lily. "I play a facedown card, then play a monster facedown in Defense Position and pass!" you say. Rebecca giggles. "Looks like I've already got you on the ropes!" she says cheerfully.

TURN 6: REBECCA

Yukari: 2500 LP
Rebecca: 3000 LP

"Hmmmm..." Rebecca hums, looking thoughtful. "It's not really worth it for me to spend Life Points attacking a monster in Defense Position...especially with that face down of yours. So I'm going to play a card face-down and end my turn!"

Well, at least that bought you some time.

"I activate the Spell Card 'Lightning Vortex!'" you say, holding the card out for Rebecca to see. "By discarding a card from my hand, I get to destroy all monsters you control!"

You discard Lawman, and arcs of lightning crackle up from out of the ground, vaporizing Liliy.

"Now that I have two Timegear monsters in my Graveyard, I can Special Summon my Timegear Dragon!"

As Timegear Dragon enters the field, you look at Rebecca, expecting dread or panic.

However, Rebecca is smirking smugly.

"I thought you'd try to rush out your Dragon." she says calmly. "That's why I prepared this little number! I activate the Continous Trap Card 'Gravity Bind'!"

There's a groaning sound. You look for the source and realize it's coming from Timegear Dragon, who is suddenly pinned to the ground by an unseen force. The mechanical dragon's hull creaks and groans as it helplessly tries to get back up on its feet.

"As long as Gravity Bind is active, monsters with a Level of 4 or higher are unable to attack!" says Rebecca. "Which means your Level 7 Dragon is totally grounded."

Well, this makes things significantly harder:...

Would you like to change your strategy?
>>
>>2837918
Well... that puts a crimp in my hose.

We can't really do anything with the cards we have right now.

>>

>>
>>2837966
Actually looking at our deck, we don't really have much in the way of trap countering.
>>
>>2837966
To be fair, giant Trunade would still work in this scenario.
>>
>>2837998
Yes, but on OUR turn and only during the main phase. The card could be replaced and all we would have done is waste a turn. We have nothing to deal with our attacks being interrupted by traps.
>>
Next turn, if we can find a way to get rid of Gravity Bind, we could fusion summon Quantum Dragon and shut down her whole field.
>>
>>2837939
You grumble. "Well played..." you say reluctantly. Right now, there's no way for you to play around her Gravity Bind. "I end my turn."

Rebecca: 3000 LP

Rebecca draws. "I Summon Cure Mermaid in Attack Position and pass!"

TURN 8: REBECCA

GY: Mirror Force, Time Wizard, Lightning Vortex

You draw: Limiter Removal

What is your move?
>>

I don't think we can fusion Quantum Dragon anyway. It needs Timegear Dragon AND two different Timegears. Also, if Cure Mermaid attacks Gentleman, it'll be destroyed. Should we change to attack?
>>
>>2838076
Cure Mermaid's Level 4. Gravity Bind affects ALL monsters.
>>
>>2838050
fucking hell...

Still no good plays come to mind.

Using Timegear Dragon's effect won't solve any problems since Field Agent is level 4 and Lawman is 5.

Using Super Poly to summon Quantum Dragon only makes it so Rebecca can't normal summon or set magic and traps.

>>2838076
We could use Dragon's ability to bring back a banished Timegear monster for the summon.

You grit your teeth with frustration. There's nothing you can do to get rid of her Gravity Bind.

"I end my turn." you say. You can hear muttering in the crowd- to see you go from completely annihilating Abe to being unable to do anything against Rebecca is quite a turn.

Meanwhile, in the crowd:

"I don' get it..." says Joey. "Yukari's not doin' anything!"

"That facedown monster of hers is probably another Level 4!" guesses Yugi. "Yukari's Deck is all about getting big monsters out quickly, like her Dragon-Lawman combo. But since she relies so heavily on Level 4 and higher monsters, Gravity Bind seriously weakens her deck!"

"But what about Rebecca?" asks Tristan. "She can't use any big monsters, either."

"Injection Fairy Lily's only Level 3." explains Yugi. "If Rebecca finds a way to bring Lily back to the field..."

He trails off.

"...it'll be curtains fer Yukari." finishes Joey.

Back on the Dueling field...

TURN 10: REBECCA

Yukari: 2500 LP
Rebecca: 3000 LP

"I draw!" says Rebecca. "Now that it's my Standby Phase, Cure Mermaid increases my Life Points by 800!"

Rebecca: 3000 LP -> 3800

"Now that I've got Cure Mermaid on the field, I can start building my Anti-Cure combo! " says Rebecca. "I Summon another Fire Princess in Attack Position. She can't attack because of Gravity Bind, but every time my Life Points increase, you'll take 500 points of damage."

You grit your teeth. Not only is your Deck locked down by Gravity Bind, now you're on a timer!

"I think that'll do it for my turn," says Rebecca.

"First, I set a card facedown!" you say. "Then, I activate Timegear Dragon's field ability, allowing me to Special Summon a banished 'Timegear' monster! Come back, Timegear Lawman!"

Lawman strides out on to battlefield...and immediately gets forced down to one knee by Gravity Bind. "Next, I flip my facedown Timegear Gentleman face-up, and activate a facedown Spell Card- Super Polymerization!"

Rebecca's eyes go wide with surprise. "SUPER Polymerization?!" she repeats. "That's right!" you say. "By discarding a card, I can Fuson Summon a monster using monsters on either side of the field as material! Sadly, you don't have anything I can use as material, but Super Polymerization prevents you from activating effects in response to it!"

The audience is awestruck as you begin the Fusion.

"I fuse Timegear Dragon, Timegear Lawman, and Timegear Gentlemen! Wings that pierce through time's current merge with heroic hearts of steel!"

A spinning vortex forms, as your Timegear monsters become orbs of glowing light that swirl around each other.

"Fusion Summon! Timegear Quantum Dragon!"

From the center of the vortex emerges the biggest monster you've ever summoned, easily twice the size of Timegear Dragon. Steam hisses from every joint as it slowly descends from the sky with a roar.

The crowd is amazed, but Rebecca seems less than impressed. "So what?" she asks. "It still can't attack!"

"I know," you say with a smirk. "But Quantum Dragon has a special effect- when it's Fusion Summoned, all facedown cards you control are banished!"

Quantum Dragon roars so intensely it kicks up wind, and you see the facedown card get blown away- a Rope of Life.

"Tch, so?" asks Rebecca- a little less confident this time.

"That's not all Quantum Dragon does!" you say. "As long as Quantum Dragon is face-up on the field you can't set monsters in Defense Position or play Spells and Traps facedown."

Rebecca gasps. "But that means-"

"That's right, you can't play any new Traps!" you say. "So I think I've done enough to end my turn here."

TURN 12: REBECCA

Yukari: 2500 LP
Rebecca: 3800 LP

"I draw, and Cure Mermaid's effect activates- which activates Fire Princess's effect!"

Fire Princess lifts a hand up to launch a bolt of flame directly at you.

Yukari: 2500 LP -> 2000 LP
Rebecca: 3800 LP -> 4600 LP

"I activate the Continuous Spell Card 'Dark Room of Nightmare!" says Rebecca. "Every time you take damage from a card effect, Dark Room of Nightmare does an extra 200 damage!"

Meanwhile, in the audience...

"Dark Room of Nightmare?!" yells Joey. "What kinda messed up card is that?!"

"I've never seen Rebecca play that card before..." remarks Tristan. "Did someone give that to her...?"

Back on the dueling field...

"I end my turn!" says Rebecca.

"Huh? What are you talking about?" asks Rebecca. "I've got more than double your Life Points and you can't attack me!"

"Not for long! I activate the Spell Card 'Mystical Space Typhoon'! Much like Pot of Greed, it needs no introduction, so I'll just use its effect to break your Gravity Bind!"

Rebecca's Trap explodes. Quantum Dragon roars triumphantly, freed from its unseen shackles. With a flap of its wings it rises off the ground to hover above you.

"Now that my monster can attack, I'll have it destroy your Fire Princess!"

"B-but that still won't put me to 0!" says Rebecca. "Normally, you'd be right." you say. "But I've got one more Spell Card to play- Limiter Removal!"

The crowd gasps in awe. You continue talking. "For the rest of this turn, all Machine monsters I control get their ATK values doubled at the cost of being destroyed at the end of my turn- but I don't think that'll be a problem!"

Quantum Dragon glows red-hot as steam valves and safety mechanisms are turned off in its massive body, causing it to spew steam wildly. White steam clings to the field like morning fog as Quantum Dragon roars.

Timegear Quantum Dragon: 3300 ATK -> 6600 ATK

The crowd goes wild.

"6600?! That's stronger 'den Obelisk!" exclaims Joey.

"Quantum Dragon, destroy her Fire Princess and end this! Century-Exploding Beam!"

Pale green light shines from Quantum Dragon's mouth as it charges its attack. It builds and builds and builds until whipping its head down towards Fire Princess, unleashing a blinding beam of green light you have to shield your eyes from. You hear Rebecca cry out in shock as her monster is completely eradicated.

Rebecca: 4600 LP -> 0

You win!

The crowd loses its mind.

"UN-BE-LIEVEABLE!" screams an announcer. "I've never seen a turn-around like that! Yukari Kuromatsu wins the Duel with an explosive play, earning her a spot in the Quarter Finals!"

You get on one knee so you're eye-level with Rebecca. "That was one of the hardest Duels I've ever played," you say earnestly. Rebecca's eyes stop watering and she looks at you with surprise. "R-really?"

You smile at her and nod. "You've got talent and a mind for the game," you say. "In no time at all, you'll pass me by."

You look over to see Yugi, Joey, and their friends walking over. "Who knows? Maybe you'll be Queen of Games some day..."

Rebecca blushes a little at that idea. You extend a hand to her as a sign of good sportsmanship. "Thank you for giving me such an incredible challenge." you say graciously.

Rebecca smiles and shakes her hand, her tears long gone.

---

After the Duel, Yugi invites you and Rebecca to join them at a diner. After burgers and milkshakes are had, the topic inevitably comes back to the Duel.

"Hey, Rebecca," says Joey. "Where'd you get that one Spell card you played- the creepy Dark Room one?"

Rebecca shrugs. "Some old guy gave them to me." she says. "He said his granddaugher was a big fan of mine and he wanted to give me some cards to help me win..."

Rebecca pulls out a series of cards- 3 Solemn Wishes and a pair of Dark Room of Nightmares.

"And he just gave you the cards?" asks Tea. Rebecca nods. "Yeah, he didn't even give me his name or ask me to autograph something for his daughter. I thought it was a little weird, but Grampa said I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth...

"Do you remember what he looks like?" you ask. If Janus is right, Rebecca got those Spells and Traps from Verne.

"Uhhhh..." Rebecca rubs her forehead, trying to remember. "He was wrinkly, had gray hair and wore a pair of glasses and a suit with a yellow tie..."

Meanwhile...

An elderly man curses under his breath as his watch beeps. He presses a button on the side and the watch face turns into a small video screen. A man wreathed in darkness speaks.

"You said the Hawkins girl would defeat Leon." the shadowy man says coldly. "The Underground duelist was not something I expected," the old man said, pleas for mercy in his voice.

"You fool, that girl is no Underground Duelist." says the shadowy man. He leans forward, and his face comes into view- the face of Orwell, glaring daggers through the screen. "She's a plant, sent by the GTP."

"Orwell, I-"

"Save your breath, Verne. Since you failed to put Ziegfried on the path to victory and destroy Seto Kaiba's credibility, I'm going to be generous and give you one final task: make sure the GTP girl doesn't make it out of this time period alive..."

Sweat forms on Verne's brow- he never thought he'd have to do such a thing. "Y-Yes sir..." he says weakly.

You shrug- then realize you're on an audio-only call with Wataru. "I don't know," you say, lying back on your bed and looking at the ceiling. "I'm just wondering if they've realized I'm gone." you say. "They'd probably freak out if I went missing."

"Don't worry about that," Wataru says, his tone reassuring. "When we've got everyone from Belial arrested, the Commander's gonna send you back to a point in time within 5 minutes after you came to the future. As far as anyone from your time is concerned, you haven't gone anywhere."

"OK." you say. "I just..."

"Miss your family?" Wataru chimes in. "That's totally normal. We call it home-time sickness. Happens to a lot of people who spend a couple days in a different time."

"Really?" you ask.

"Yeah, even I've had it." Wataru says. He laughs sheepishly. "I had a month-long sting operation 40 years ahead of my present. When I came home, I cried like a big ol' baby when I saw my wife and kids."

"Well, let's hope it doesn't take a month." you say. "Knock on wood," replies Wataru. "Get some shut-eye, kid...you got a game to lose."

---

The next day, you report to the Dueling field with a fire in your gut and a hunger for defeat.

"This Duel's gonna be one for the record books, folks!" says a commentator broadcasting from a blimp overhead. "On one side, the undefeated child prodigy Leon Wilson- on the other, the surprise dark horse competitor with a dynamite Deck, Yukar Kuromatsu."

"This is gonna be fun." Leon says with a grin. You look out on the crowd and see a few signs cheering you on in the nosebleed seats. You feel a little guilty, knowing you'll have to let those people down for the greater good.

Leon wins the right to go first.

"Ladies and gentlemen," shouts the announcer. "It's time to DUEL!"

TURN 1: LEON

Yukari: 4000 LP
Leon: 4000 LP

"Alright, let's get started," says Leon. "First, I activate the Spell Card 'Terraforming'! It lets me add a Field Spell from my Deck to my hand!"

Leon rummages through his deck and pulls out a card depicting a castle made of gold. "I activate the Spell Card 'Golden Castle of Stromberg'!"

Behind Leon, a massive European-style castle made of shimmering gold emerges. The crowd oohs and aahs at the spectacle.

(QM's Note: OK, if you know the Grand Championship story, relax: I'm using the TCG version of the Castle for this Duel. It's implied that Zigfried edited the effect of the one seen in the anime right before Leon's Duel with Yugi when he put the computer virus in it, so no, I'm not going to send half your Deck to the GY every turn.)

"I'll explain what the Castle does when it's relevant, because it does a LOT off cool stuff!" says Leon. "For instance, it lets me use the effect of Hexe Trude- when I have the Castle in play, I can Normal Summon her without needing to Tribute any monsters, even though she's a Level 8 monster!"

A beautiful witch emerges from the castle gate, giving you a predatory smirk.

"I think that'll do it for me." Leon says with a smile. "Your turn!"

TURN 2: YUKARI

Yukari: 4000 LP
Leon: 4000 LP

Your hand: Time Wizard, Timegear Chronomotive, Timegear Dragon, Soul Release, Timegear Surveyor

What is your move?

god dammit why do we have so few Timegear monsters, every time I think there's a cool combo to pull off I realize one of the monsters isn't on the deck list. No engineers, no investigators, I'm dying on the inside.

>>
>>2839260
MIght be a bit too obvious. I'm okay with going for a hail mary time wizard, because I'm already not feeling so good about our odds. Like I said, I really wish we had engineer and investigator in our deck. Investigator combos well with agent, and engineer helps get things moving if our hand isn't the greatest.

"I Summon Timegear Gentleman in Attack Position!" you say. "When I summon Gentleman, I can pick a Timegear monster from my Deck and either add it to my hand or banish it!"

"Let me guess, you're going to try to Special Summon Lawman?" asks Leon. "Ah well, hope you're ready to take 1000 damage for that play."

TURN 3

"I draw, and pay the cost of Golden Castle of Stromberg by banishing the top 10 cards of my Deck!"

"That's a pretty steep cost for a Field Spell..." you say. "Yeah, but it's worth it. Plus, I got a couple cards to help me deal with it." says Leon. "I Summon Iron Hans in Attack Position!"

A mangy-looking man with a battle ax charges out of the castle, screaming bloody murder. "When I summon Iron Hans, I can Special Summon an Iron Knight from my Deck!" says Leon.

A horse-riding knight clad in heavy armor rides over the drawbridge, following behind Iron Hans. "Iron Hans gains 1000 ATK for every Iron Knight I control," says Leon. "Unfortunately, Iron Knight loses 1000 ATK while I control Iron Hans, but that's a trade-off I can live with."

Iron Knight: 1700 ATK -> 700 ATK
Iron Hans: 1200 ATK - > 2200 ATK

"Alright, let's go!" says Leon. "Hexe Trude, destroy her Timegear Gentleman!"

Hexe Trude snaps her fingers, and Gentleman's metal body turns to wood before bursting into flames.

Yukari: 4000 LP -> 3000 LP
"Whenever Hexe Trude destroys a monster by battle, she can increase another monster's ATK by 400!" says Leon, smiling like a kid on Christmas. "So I'll power up Iron Hans!"

Iron Hans: 2200 -> 2600

"Well, would you look at that," Leon says with a bittersweet smile. "Looks like this fairy tale's coming to an end. Unfortunately, there's no happily ever after for you this time, Yukari. Iron Hans! Iron Knight! Finish her off!"

Wait- that's game?!

You do the math...you have 3000 LP...Iron Hans has 2600...Iron Knight has 700....

Oh, jeez! You probably couldn't beat this kid if you were actually trying!

Yukari: 3000 LP -> 0

You lose!

The crowd goes silent. "Well...that was- unexpected," says the commentator. "Leon Wilson is going on to the finals!"

Leon's supporters cheer, while you stand there dumbfounded....

"Wow...that was brutal." Wataru says in your earpiece. "Did you mean to blow up that hard?"

>>"....what just happened?!"
I won't lie, I was looking forward to walking a tight rope over a few turns and then losing dramatically. This was anti-climactic, but honestly pretty hilarious. Daaaaaamn.
>>
>>2839337
>"....what just happened?!"
We did worse than the original timeline's Rebecca. Ah well, shake Leon's hand. I'd want us to say it was a good game but fuck if that wasn't embarrassing as hell.

Wataru laughs, but he sounds sympathetic. "C'mon, shake it off, kid." he says. "You did your job, now the timeline will progress the way it's suppose t-"

Wataru falls silent- everything falls silent. "Well, well, well, the interloper defeated." says a quiet, well-spoken voice. You turn and see the man that Rebecca was talking about- the one with the yellow tie, walking down the stairs of the spectator seats towards you.

"But that was your plan all along, isn't it?" asks the man. "Shame, really. I was looking forward to seeing Zigfried dethrone Yugi Muto. Ah, well, c'est la vie."

"Wataru, are you hearing this?!" you ask. The man walks towards you, and you take a couple shaky steps back.

"That's him." says Wataru. "That's Verne!"

"This is where your journey ends, Yukari." the man says hautily. He puts on a mocking tone and says: "Your parents will be so distraught when you never return to your own time period."

He clicks a button on a wristwatch and it morphs into a jet-black HIND. As he does that, the world around you goes monochrome. People walk by you, paying no mind. One person even walks through you, but you feel nothing.

"What's happening?!" you say, freaked out by the turn of events.

"Orwell made these HINDs just for us." says Verne. "They can put two people with HINDS slightly out of phase with the passage of time so we can duel without interruptions."

"Wataru, you hearing this?" you ask.

"Losing- connection- " Wataru says, cutting in and out. "Can't -talk - focused- keeping your signal --- locked"

"The GTP won't be of much help, dear." says Verne. His HIND's blade extends, red light illuminating the card slots. "Ready for your final Duel?"

"The only one having a final duel is you," you say as you open your HIND.

"Ladies first," says Verne. "It's the very least I could do."

"I Summon Timegear Initiate in Attack Position!" you declare as the young inventor portals in on your side of the field. "And now that I've summoned her, I get to Special Summon a Level 4 or lower Timegear monster from my hand! Come out, Timegear Gentleman!"

The dapper robot appears beside Initiate, offering the girl a cup of tea.

"With Gentleman summoned, I can pick a Timegear monster from my Deck and add it to my hand or banish it, so I banish a Timegear Dragon!"

Verne quirks an eyebrow. "Banishing one of your best monsters? Not a terribly brilliant move, if I do say so myself." he remarks dryly.

"I'm not done," you say, not appreciating his dig at you. "I discard Timegear Field Agent to activate Super Polymerization and fuse Initiate with Gentleman!"

A swirling vortex opens up behind you, absorbing your monsters. "Minds of clockwork and hearts of steel bind themselves together. The oath of the knight resonates throughout time into the future! Fusion Summon - Timegear Knight!"

A massive mechanical knight the size of a small building bursts through the vortex, coming to a stop before you. It kneels briefly to you before drawing its sword and brandishing it at Verne.

"Now that I have 2 Timegears in my Graveyard, I can banish them to Special Summon my other Timegear Dragon!"

Timegear Dragon roars as it takes a place beside Timegear Knight.

"Because I banished Initiate, I can shuffle her back into the Deck!" you say. "You're up!"

Yukari: 4000 LP
Verne: 4000 LP

"Well, I can't do anything as ludicrous as that," scoffs Verne. "But I can play a card facedown and summon Megalosmasher X in Attack Position."

"That'll do for now." Verne says calmly. "Your turn."

You don't like the look of that facedown. You decide to test the waters- here's hoping nothing bites your toe off.

"I shift my Timegear Knight to defense position-"

Timegear Knight switches to a parrying stance.

"And attack your Megalosmasher X with Timegear Dragon!"

Verne smirks. "I'mafraid you've activated my Trap Card." he says smugly. "I activate Justi-Break! When you attack a face-up Normal Monster I control, I can destroy all monsters on the field except for Normal Monsters in Attack Position!"

You cry out in shock as lightning surges from the activated Trap Card, striking your monsters and destroying them.

Verne laughs. "Don't thnk that just because you can Special Summon monster, you're somehow a better Duelist. My deck will teach you the hard way that the old ways are better."

TURN 4: VERNE

Yukari: 4000 LP
Verne: 4000 LP

"Draw." says Verne. "Hmmm...I could destroy you now...But I want to have some fun with you... I always had a habit of playing with my food..."

"I tribute my Megalosmasher X to Summon The Valiant Knight!"

The shark is consumed, and an imposing armored knight steps on to the field. "Valiant Knight, attack her directly!"

The Knight charges and swings it sword-

And immediately, you can tell something bad is happening.

A cutting pain radiates through your left side. You look down to see a long, slowly bleeding gash.

Verne's smile disappears, replaced by a deep scowl. "Such an unsporting card..." He mutters derisively.

"I use my banished Timegear Gentleman and Timegear Dragon to Fusion Summon another Timegear Knight!"

Another Knight appears from the fusion vortex, ready to strike down Verne's monster.

"Timegear Knight, show that Valiant Knight who the real top knight is!"

"I'm not going to let you attack my Surveyor for game!" you say. Timegear Dragon turns to you, nods it head like it knows what's going to do and is ready to do it, and flies at the Valiant Knight. Steel clashes with steel and steam fills the area as both monsters are slain.

"I'll wrap this up by attacking you direcetly with Surveyor and setting a card facedown!"

TURN 8: VERNE

Yukari: 1500 LP
Verne: 4900 LP

"I draw..." Verne says stuffily. He looks at his card and laughs. "You're in trouble now, dear- I just drew my best card, the only Normal Monster ever printed that could defeat the legendary Blue-Eyes White Dragon!"

"What?!" you say. You've never even heard of a card like that.

"My monster is the WORLD-BREAKER DRAGON!" exclaims Verne, showing you the card. "And since it's a Normal Monster, Heart of the Underdog allows me to draw again!"

He draws. "Gene-Warped Warwolf! I draw again!"

He draws again. "Unexpected Dai...not a Normal Monster, but a good draw nonetheless." he says. "I activate Unexpected Dai! Because I control no monsters, I can Special Summon a Level 4 or lower Normal Monster from my Deck.I summon Alexandrite Dragon in Defense Position!"

"Defense Position?" you ask. "I'm not an imbecile, dear." says Verne. "If I attack your Surveyor with Alexandrite, you'll withstand the damage and you'll just attack whatever I throw at you with your Knight! Besides, I have other plans for my Alexandrite! I tribute my Alexandrite to play a legendary demon of lightning- the Summoned Skull!"

The skeletal hellion emergest with a shriek, lightning crackling behind it as it glowers down at you.

"Summoned Skull, destroy her and her Timegear Surveyor!" commands Verne. "Lightning Strike!"

"I don't think so!" you say. "I activate Magic Cylinder!"

Verne's eyes go wide and he takes a step back. "Magic Cylinder?! NO!"

You smirk. "I take it you know what Magic Cylinder does, but just in case you don't, it takes the attack of your monster and redirects it right at you!"

Summoned Skull's lightning bolt flies into one tube and out the other. Verne screams in pain as his Solid Vision with Mass attack hits him directly.

Verne: 4900 LP -> 2400 LP

Verne collapses on the ground, smoke coming off of his clothes. For a second, you worry that you just killed him, but he slowly rises to his feet. "Going...to kill you." he says slowly, his voice barely above a whisper.

TURN 9: YUKARI

Your GY:
Upstart Goblin
Timegear Field Agent
Timespace Fusion
Timegear Knight
Magic Cylinder

Banished:
Timegear Dragon

You draw:
Pot of Greed

(Gonna autoplay it because it's the only card in your hand)

You activate Pot of Greed and draw 2 more cards.

You draw
Soul Release
Lightning Vortex

"I'd be lying if I said I was having fun," you say. "But I think your time's run out, Verne!"

You hold out the Lightning Vortex and grin triumphantly. "I activate the Spell Card 'Lightning Vortex'! By discarding a card from my hand, I can destroy all face-up monsters you control!"

"What?! No!" shouts Verne. "This isn't happening!"

"Oh, it's happening!" you say. Lightning fills the monochrome world before striking Summoned Skull's horns, electrifying it.

"Now, I attack with Timegear Knight to end the Duel! Timegear Knight! Destroy his Life Points with Chrono Cutter!

Timegear Knight holds its sword up over its head with both hands before swinging down with a vertical slash. A crescent of green energy shoots off of the blade and crashes directly into Verne.

"No-NOOOO!" shrieks Verne.

Verne: 2400 -> 0

You win!

Color returns to the world around you as you get back in phase. The arena is empty as you walk up to a slumped-over, barely-moving Verne.

"Chronometric coordinates locked in." chirps the HIND, glowing with gold light. "Initiating return warp!"

(con't)
>>
>>2840461

You find yourself in the room you were in when you travelled back in time. Verne is sitting on the floor, looking disoriented. Wataru is standing with a high-tech pair of handcuffs at the ready. "You're under arrest for attempted unlawful alteration of a timeline." recites Wataru. "Everything you say can and-"

Verne's eyes open wide, buldging as he screams and clutches at his chest.

"No!" wails Verne, thrashing on the ground in agony.

"Holy-!" curses Wataru. "GET A MEDTEAM IN HERE, STAT!"

You watch as the veins in Verne's forehead and arms bulge. Something under his skin is glowing red- no, hundereds- no, thousands of somethings glow red in his veins. His eyes take on the same red glow as his body contorts wildly. Verne's mouth opens, and a voice that isn't his begins to come out of it.

"So, the GTP sends a child to meddle in my plans..." says Not-Verne. The voice is a deep baritone, full of menace. "I knew you were desperate to stop me, but this is a new low...hehehehe...doesn't matter. My followers will get the better of you eventually."

A team of what look like paramedics rush in, trying to restrain Verne. The man swings his arm with strength unheard of for someone so old, knocking them back.

"As for this one...I've no more use for him...how fortuitous I gave him nanobots to keep him healthy as reward for serving me- they can take his life away as easily as they give it!"

Verne's eyes stop glowing and his actual voice comes out in a horrified scream. "NO! ORWELL, PLEASE DON'T! I-"

A wordless scream of pain is let out as the red glow in his veins gets brighter and brighter. Verne flails, screaming in pain before falling limp like a ragdoll.

One of the paramedics approaches the immobile Belial member. "No pulse," the medic says after some checks. "He's dead."

You take a step back, horrified by what just happened. "O-Oh, God..." you say, voice trembling. "I-I-I killed him..."

Wataru shakes his head. "No, Yukari. Orwell killed him. Verne was just a disposable pawn for Orwell."

The medic team takes Verne's body away as you sit in the lobby of HQ, trying to pull yourself together. Wataru sits down next to you.

"Need a moment?" he asks.

"How could Orwell do something like that?" you ask sadly. "Orwell's...a monster." Wataru says after some hesitation. "He...he's the one who built the first time travel device. While he was testing his machine, he went to a parallel timeline and used a Solid Vision machine to create monsters, just because he wanted to see how timelines could be altered."

Wataru looks grim. "His monsters burned entire cities to the ground and picked off every survivor, all in the name of an experiment. He tried to do it again, but we caught him before he got the chance."

Your eyes go wide. "Is he going to do that again?" you ask. He shakes his head. "No...Orwell wants to learn how to control things. He was way off the deep end even before he destroyed that timeline- he spent years ranting that free will was a prison and would lead humanity to oblivion. Nobody paid any attention to him until he got a body count."

You look down at your feet. Everything you've learned about Orwell terrifies you.

Wataru stands up. "First, we gotta get you healed up. Your injury isn't too bad, we can just administer a chemgraft and patch you up."

'Chemgraft' turns out to be a rather uncomfortable injection to the area around the injury. After a few seconds of a burning sensation, your wound is completely healed up.

The Commander re-enters the room. "Ready to go back?" she asks. You nod intently.

You begin to wander around the forest. You try to get Janus to give you a report on what you need to do, but it only says 'ERROR: Predictive Model still processing, please wait!'

You keep refreshing the display, hoping eventually you'll get something. You don't know someone's walking towards you until you literally run right into them.

"Ow..." you mumble, picking yourself up from the dust.

"Ah, jeez..." mutters the other guy. You look up to see a boy roughly your age wth brown hair and a red jacket.

"And here I thought I was the only one lost in the woods..." he says before standing up. "You heading to Duel Academy, too?"

"Yeah," you say instinctively. "Do you know how to get there?"

The boy laughs sheepishly. "Believe me, if I knew I wouldn't be stuck going in circles." he says. "Name's Jaden Yuki, by the way. What's yours?"

"Yukari Kuromatsu." you answer with a friendly smile. "Nice to meet you!"

Jaden smiles- and then his stomach grumbles loud enough for you to hear it. "Uuuugh...I haven't eaten in days...." he groans.

"Hang on, I think I got a granola bar somewhere..." you mutter, fumbling through your bookbag. You fish out a honey-flavored granola bar and toss it to Jaden, who eats it appreciatively.

"...how long have you been in these woods?" you ask out of curiosity.

"In the woods? Not very long." says Jaden. "But...well, it's a crazy story...you'll think I'd belong in a padded room if I told ya."

"I've heard crazier stories..." you say.

"OK, so I had to leave DA after I lost to a pro-Duelist named Aster Phoenix..." begins Jaden.

Jaden goes on to explain that his loss somehow took away his ability to see his cards, even though everyone else could see them just fine. Jaden left, thinking he couldn't duel anymore. However, his boat was marooned before getting hit by a comet that took him to some place called 'Neo-Space', where he found a satellite filled with cards he designed as a kid for a KaibaCorp contest. He built a new deck of 'Neo-Spacians' to replace his Elemental Hero deck. He also talked about something telling him a 'Light of Destruction' was coming to DA and he had to stop it.

"So, yeah, crazy story." finishes Jaden.

You shrug. "I've heard weirder." you say. "My uncle knew a guy who claims aliens abducted him in the middle of a soccer game."

Jaden laughs. "Wait, was the guy in the middle of a soccer game or was that the aliens?"

You chuckle. However, the wind picks up and you worry that a storm might come in. "We should get going..." you say. Jaden looks up at the sky and frowns. "Yeah, you're probably right..." he says.

You begin a long walk through the woods. You eventually come to a clearing- and Jaden COMPLETELY MISSES a sign that clearly points the way to Duel Academy. You have to stop him and point the sign out- which causes him a great deal of embarassment.

When you get to Duel Academy, you arrive to see a silver-haired boy in a white suit challenging a blonde student to a Duel. However, it comes to a stop when you and Jaden emerge.

"Hey, guys, what'd I miss?" he asks a group of student.

"Jaden!" cries a short bespectacled student, looking shocked. He then notices you. "Hey, Jaden, who's she?"

Jaden grins. "This is my new friend, Yukari! She helped me find my way back here after we got lost! Yukari, meet Syrus, Hassleberry, Alexis, Bastion, and..."

Jaden's smile vanishes. "Aster..." he says quietly, looking at the well-dressed Duelist.

Aster grins cockily. "Welcome back, Jaden. You were just in time to see me duel Alexis...after you left, and with Zane gone, she took the spot of top duelist in the Academy."

Syrus looks to Jaden with fear. "Jaden, they're gonna bulldoze the Slifer Red dorm if Aster wins."

Judging by Aster's facial expression, this is news to him. However, he keeps his resolve.

"Well, now that I'm back, how about I duel you instead?" offers Jaden.

Is it really a good idea to summon Initiate just for Field Agent? 700 ATK leaves it open. We can summon Field Agent now and then use Initiate later when we see what he plays. We should set Torrential Tribute as well.
>>
>>2841495
Fair enough
>>2841459
Change my vote to normal summon Field agent, set torrential tribute, end turn.

"Alright, I start by Normal Summoning 'Timegear Field Agent and playing a card facedown." you say. "Not a particularly flashy start, but you can't always hit the ground running."

TURN 2: Crowler

"Alright, class is in session!." says Crowler. "I Normal Summon Ancient Gear Wyvern, which allows me to search an Ancient Gear card from my Deck. I'll add an 'Ancient Gear Box' to my hand."

Activate Torrential Tribute?
>>
>>2841573
Nah, our monster has a higher attack, and using it on a single enemy monster is a poor trade.
>>
>>2841573
Save TT for when it matters.
>>
>>2841580
You decide not to pop your Tribute- bad trade, and it wouldn't stop Wyvern's effect.

Crowler holds out the card in question. "This activates Box's effect- by adding it to my hand without drawing it, I can add any EARTH Machine monster with 500 ATK or DEF to my hand from my Deck."

You grin. "You'll have to tell me where you got that card, it'd go great in my Deck!" you say. Crowler chuckles. "Beat me, and maybe I'll tell you." he says. "I add Ancient Gear Knight to my hand! Then, I activate the Equip Spell 'Ancient Gear Tank'! When I equip one of my Ancient Gears with this card, it gains 600 ATK!"

You quirk an eyebrow. "How would a wyvern use a tank?" you ask.

"I..." Crowler trails off, then rubs his chin. "...don't actually know."

A motorcycle-sized tank appears under the mechanical dragon, who grabs it with its rusted iron talons and lifts it off the ground.

"Oh, that's how." Crowler says bemusedly.

AG Wyvern: 1700 ATK -> 2300 ATK

"Ancient Gear Wyvern, crush her Timegear Field Agent!"

A dark shadow forms at Field Agent's feet. She looks up just in time to see Wyvern dropping the Tank on top of her, literally crushing her.

Yukari: 4000 LP -> 3600 LP

TURN 3: YUKARI

GY:
Timegear Field Agent

Field:
Torrential Tribute (FD)

Hand:
Lightning Vortex
Heavy Storm
Teamgear Initiate

You draw:
Timegear Surveyor

What is your move?
>>
>>2841611
Set heavy storm, end turn.

Basically pray he goes for an all in with a boss monster and activate torrential tribute. Summoning a monster now is basically throwing it away. And lightning vortex is overkill when he only has a single monster. If he doesn't summon anything and just attacks, we can take the hit to our life points.
>>
>>2841611
>>2841639
Supporting. I'm guessing he'll at least summon that Knight he got.
>>
>>2841639
>>2841651

You're not even gonna Set Initiate?
>>
>>2841661
I'm a moron, yeah set initiate. It can help set up for timegear draogn.
>>

Set Initiate for a little extra protection
Set Heavy Storm

>>
>>2841611
Ok, finally caught up. Just set Initiate then end turn
>>
>>2841667
>>2841671

"I Set a monster facedown and play another backrow facedown. End turn."

TURN 4: CROWLEY

Yukari: 3600 LP
Crowler: 4000 LP

"I Set a card facedown and Summon Ancient Gear Knight in Attack Position!" says Crowler. "Just to make sure you don't have a 2000 DEF wall like a Clayman protecting you, I'll destroy it with my Wyvern, then attack directly with Ancient Gear Knight!"

Yukari: 3600 LP -> 1800 LP

"If you want to enroll, you'll have to do better than this." Crowler says. "I really don't want to turn you away, but a deal's a day."

"I don't plan on losing!" you retort,

TURN 5: YUKARI

Yukari: 1800 LP

GY:
Timegear Field Agent
Timegear Initiate

Field: Torrential Tribute (FD)

Hand:
Lightning Vortex
You draw:
Timegear Dragon

What's your move?
>>
>>2841711
He summoned Ancient Gear Knight, couldn't we have Torrential'd?
>>
>>2841711
Special summon Timegear Dragon by banishing our graveyard monsters
>>
>>2841711
SS timegear dragon by banishing field agent and initiate from the graveyard.
Timegear dragon attacks AG wyvern
end turn

Getting rid of his highest att monster just in case he has a way of buffing it even more and destroying our Timegear Dragon.
>>
>>2841725
This
>>
>>2841725
but wait, activate heavy storm first, to clear his backrow.
>>
>>2841731
Good idea
>>
>>2841736
>>2841731

You sure? This will also destroy TT.
>>
>>2841740
Fuck it nevermind then, it would be a waste, what with attacking the monster with the equip spell and wasting our trap. If his facedown screws us over tt is still there for a turnaround.

Thanks for asking and allowing me to think about it a little more.
>>
>>2841740
Why weren't we able to use TT when he summoned Knight anyway?
>>
>>2841743

"I activate the effect of 'Timegear Dragon'!" you announce. "By banishing 2 'Timegear' monsters from my Graveyard, I can Special Summon it from my hand!"

Timegear Dragon roars as it flies down, regarding Crowler's Ancient Gears as inferior pretenders. "Timegear Dragon, attack his Wyvern!"

Dragon opens its mouth and steam engulfs the Wyvern- a clockwork king destroys a clockwork imitator.

"Good move, but it'll cost you- by destroying Wyvern's Tank, you take 600 damage!" says Crowler.

Yukari: 1800 LP -> 1200 LP

You grit your teeth as a holographic cog fake-hits you in the head. "I can take it!" you say. "It's not over until my Life Points hit 0!"

(gonna take a break. will continue in about 2 or three hours.)
>>
Hey, could someone provide me with a link to our deck? I wanna read over it to see if I can't contribute some plays.

TURN 6: CROWLER

Crowler pauses, seeming to weigh his options. "Hmmm...A risky move, but it's one I'll have to make. First, I activate my facedown Trap Card 'Zero Gravity', which causes all monsters on the field to change their position!"

Your Timegear Dragon begins floating aimlessly. "Next, I switch my Ancient Gear Knight back to Attack Position and equip it with 'Ancient Gear Fist'!"

The mechanical soldier's right arm suddenly doubles in size. "Whenever a monster battles an Ancient Gear equipped with the Fist survives the battle, the Fist's effect destorys it! Ancient Gear Knight, attack her Timegear Knight!"

The Knight smashes it's giant hand into your Dragon, forming a crack in the hull that spiderwebs out before splitting it open.

Crowler: 3200 LP -> 3000

TURN 7: YUKARI

GY:
Timegear Dragon

Banished
Timegear Field Agent
Timegear Initiate

Field:
Torrential Tribute (FD)

Hand
Lightning Vortex

You draw
Timegear Gentleman

What is your move?
>>
>>2841942
Normal summon gentleman, add timegear lawman to hand
Special summon lawman due to his effect
Lawman attack ancient gear knight
gentleman attack directly.
end turn

also shouldn't we have a facedown heavy storm?
>>
>>2841957
>>2841953
Yeah, I forgot the Heavy Storm
>>
>>2841959
Also, will Yukari or Crowler eventually comment on the superiority of their respective gears? I mean really, ancient gear... timegear... I'm waiting for one of them to diss the other.
>>

Just in case, I deleted that one post because I was being dumb and forgot ancient gear knight has 200 more attack points.

>>2841961
Something something "stands the test of time"
>>
>>2841959
Also, initiate's effect should have shuffled it back into our deck rather than sticking in the banished zone. I was already getting excited over potentially drawing timegear dragon before double-checking.
>>
>>2841966
Wait shit, that means we can't use lawman's effect. dammit now I have to rethink this.
>>
>>2841966
Shit, I forgot about Initiate's effect, and I MADE the damn thing!
>>
Alright yeah new plan, since initiate really should be shuffled back into our deck due to its effect.

Normal summon Gentleman, use effect to add field agent to our hand.
Activate lightning vortex, discard field agent to destroy all of crowler's monsters (really just ancient gear knight)
attack directly with gentleman.
end turn
>>
>>2841977
supporting.
>>
>>2841977
>>2841981

You grit your teeth. This is shaping up to be a difficult duel. "I Summon Timegear Gentleman, allowing me to search my Deck for a Timegear monster! In this case, I add another Field Agent to my hand!

"Then, I activate Lightning Vortex by discarding the Field Agent I searched, destroying your monster!"

Lightning bolts filled the field, blasting the Knight into scrap metal.

"Timegear Gentleman, sock it to 'im!"

Gentleman pantomimes rolling up it's 'sleeves', marches up to Crowler, and uppercuts him in the face.

"Ow!" grunts Crowler. "For a 'Gentleman', he's got a rather thuggish attitude..."

Crowler: 3000 LP -> 1400

TURN 8: CROWLER

Crowler grimaces when he sees his draw. "Ugh...I Set a monster and end my turn...." he says reluctantly.

TURN 9: YUKARI

Field
Timegear Gentleman

GY
Timegear Field Agent
Lightning Vortex
Timegear Dragon

Banished
Timegear Field Agent

Hand
Empty

You draw
Timegear Investigator

What is your move?
>>
>>2842034
Normal summon Timegear Investigator, pay 800 lifepoints to add field agent to our hand (putting us at 400)
field agent effect activates, special summoned in attack position.
Attack Crowler's facedown with field agent
if Crowler doesn't have a response and his monster is destroyed, attack directly with gentleman and investigator.
>>
>>2830511
Going right is the only true yugioh experience
>>
>>2842038
I Summon Timegear Investigator!" you say. If you can pull this off, you might win the Duel. If not, you're bound to lose. "By Summoning him, I can pay 800 Life Points to put a banished Timegear into my hand. I retrieve my Field Agent."
YUKARI: 1200 LP -> 400
Crowler quirks an eyebrow. "That won't do much good- you've used up your Normal Summon."

You grin. "On the contrary! When Timegear Field Agent returns to my hand from being banished, I can Special Summon her!"

Field Agent stands by Investigator and Gentleman as you prepare for your last move. "Your time is up, Professor Crowler. Field Agent, attack his facedown!"

Field Agent unloads a barrage of gunfire into the facedown monster- Ancient Gear Soldier.

"Gentleman, finish him!" you command.

Gentleman rushes at Crowler, delivering a fierce right hook with it's steel fist.

Crowler: 1400 LP -> 0

You win!

You smirk. "Looks like your Ancient Gears couldn't stand the test of time." you say sardonically. Crowler doesn't seem to react to the job. "A deal is a deal. I'll speak to Chancellor Sheppard and see if we can get you enrolled."

You spend the next day getting situated in the Slider Red Dorm and getting a student uniform. As you get settled into your dorm room, you get in contact with Wataru. "Never thought catching time-travelling terrorists would involve going to school." you say. Wataru chuckles. "Yeah, this is a bit of a surprise." says Wataru.

"How's Janus's model coming along?" you ask.

"Janus is... Being unusually slow." says Wataru. "So either there's a lot of timeline variables it has to account for, or the guy meddling with the past is being really sneaky about it."

"Not sure which is preferable." you say. "Look, Janus will give you the report when you need it. Until then, take it easy. As far as everyone at Duel Academy knows, you're just another student."

You like back in bed, thinking about the school you went to in your home time- the friends you had...Ichiro, your classmate who despite being confined to a wheelchair, was a confident and determined Duelist with dreams of going pro. Masaru and Kensuke, a pair of mischevious, prank loving twins. Akane, your best friend...

You remember your old deck- a Vampire deck your dad made for you from cards he had left over. Mom chastised hm for giving you such a 'scary' deck, but you were so happy to have it.

You built that Deck up with the help of Akane and Ichiro- they helped you figure out Xyz and Synchro Summoning, and when the Link Format arrived, they helped you rebuild your deck.

"You wanna give it a test run?" asks Ichiro after an afternoon of going through potential deck builds at his house with Akane and the twins. He reaches into the bag he keeps slung over the back of his wheelchair, pulling out a customized Duel Disk- instead of going onto his arm and being shaped like a blade, the play surface is a flat, foldable piece of tech with two clamps to grab onto the wheelchair armrests. "I need to test some tech cards I put into my World Chalice Deck." he says.

Masaru and Kensuke look up from watching compliation videos on DuelTube. "Hey, what about us?" pleads Masaru. "Yeah, our new Prankids cards haven't seen any play..." Kensuke says with an exaggerated pout and puppy dog eyes.

Akane facepalms. "You guys are acting ridiculous." she says.

Sure why not, he asked first. Losing won't be a big deal hopefully, just a flashback after all.
>>
>>2843274
To summarize, Link Monsters have no Defense or Level, instead having a 'Link Rating' listed after their ATK. You Link Summon them by sending face-up monsters they control equal to the Link Monster's Link Rating to the Graveyard as Link Materials, but you can take a shortcut and use other Link Monsters as material, adding their Link Ratings together. (IE, a Link 3 monster can be made with 3 monsters or a Link 1 monster and a Link 2, or a different Link 3 monster.)

One of the big upsides is that you can use Tokens as Link Material. This has lead to stuff like Scapegoat being used as a 1-card Link Spam engine that lets you get some really big Link Monsters out with little effort.
>>
>>2843308
I meant 'face-up monsters you control', forgot to edit the copy-paste
>>
>>2843311
So now Scapegoat is a nearly free Link 4 monster?

Fair enough. Mostly wanted to set Retainer to feel out Ichiro's deck.
>>
>>2843454
>>2843480

"I set a facedown card and summon Vampire Retainer!" you say, putting the cards on your Duel Disk. The nightmarish cat-demon hybrid emerges on your field with a gurgling hiss.

TURN 2: ICHIRO

Yukari: 4000 LP
Ichiro: 4000 LP

"First, I play 2 cards facedown." says Ichiro, placing the cards on his board. "Then, I'll summon 'Crowned by the World Chalice'!"

A girl who looks like a JRPG character pops up on Ichiro's field. You squint. "Why would you Summon her?" you ask. "She has zero attack!"

"Simple, I needed her to do this," answers Ichiro. He reaches for his Extra Deck. "I use Crowned by the World Chalice to Summon the 1-Rating Link Spider! It's Link Arrow points down, and once per turn I can Special Summon a Normal Monster to the zone it points to!"

A robotic spider takes the place of Crowned as Ichiro summons it to the Extra Monster Zone on your right.

Activate Vampire Domination?
>>
>>2843625
Yes activate it, letting him get multiple monsters on the board doesn't sound fun.
>>
>>2843663
"Not so fast!" you say. "I activate the Trap Card 'Vampire Domination'! If I control a Vampire monster, I can negate an effect's activation and destroy it's source. If it's a monster, I gain Life Points equal to its ATK!"

Yukari: 4000 LP -> 5000 LP

Ichiro grimaces. "Damn. I end my turn." he says.

>>
>>2843790
...I really think about what I type more often. Can't attack with Retainer, just Scourge.
>>
>>2843790
A more efficient way of doing it would be this:
>>2843778
Tribute retainer for Scarlet Scourge.
Discard vampire vamp to special summon retainer from the graveyard in attack position.
Retainer's effect activates, pay 500 lp to add vampire kingdom to our hand.
Activate vampire kingdom
Attack directly with scourge and retainer.
>>
>>2843805
Excellent point. I'll support it.
>>
>>2843805
>>2843812

"I sacrifice Retainer to summon the monster 'Vampire Scarlet Scourge'!" you say. Retainer disappears in a cloud of bats and reconstitues as a regally-dressed man of unearthly beauty.

"Next, I use Retainer's Graveyard effect and pay 500 Life Points to add a Vampire Spell or Trap from my Deck to my hand." you say. A ghost of Retainer bites you on the neck and spits out a card.

Yukari: 5000 LP -> 4500 LP

"Now, I activate the Spell Card I added- Vampire Kingdom!" you declare. "During damage calculation, Zombie monsters gain 500 ATK! On top of that, when a card is sent from your Deck to the Graveyard, I can target 1 card on the field, then send 1 DARK "Vampire" monster from my hand or Deck to the Graveyard, and if I do, the target is destroyed!"

"Vampire Scarlet Scourge, attack Ichiro directly!" you say. Scarlet Scourge laughs wickedly and flies towards Ichiro, clawing at him.

Ichiro: 4000 LP -> 1300 LP

"Whew," says Ichiro. "That was brutal!"

Maybe the site I'm looking at is lying to me, but I thought Retainer could special summon itself from the graveyard by discarding a vampire card, upon which it could pay the 500 lifepoints to add a vampire spell or trap card to our hand?

Shit, you're right....chalk it up to a error in the show script.
