And you embraced him, right on the spot.
The action came completely out of his expectation, and in turn, caught him in a sort of limbo, unable to react properly. Taking this advantage, you placed your head close to his ear.
“You dare bring him into this.” You hissed angrily, all pretenses of any fake courtesy instantly evaporated off your face, leaving only your true feelings clear for him to see.
“That wasn’t my intention, I swear,” He replied anxiously, quite surprised by your sudden burst of anger. “I merely asked if he wanted to come-”

“You think dragging my son into this will change my mind? Like that would make me take your hand somehow?”
You stared at him right in the eye with those hard scowling brows. You still clearly remember the last time he brought up the topic, and even the first time he proposed it. Things played out just the same back then, and it would be the same now.
“Aiteng, that was to protect both of you.”
“So instead of just imprisoning my son in the palace, you get to imprison the mother as well.” You pushed the man off. “A very sound plan, your Grace, I could see why the Kurultai favored you as the crown prince.”

“Aiteng, I don’t want to make this hard.” Kuri did his best to soothe your anger, and though you did want to keep going at him, it also wasn’t a good idea to antagonize him too much.
“30 seconds. If you have anything else, say it in this time frame.” You stopped him in his tracks. “If not, then please excuse me as I have other matters to attend.”

“You do have something to say, don’t you?” You raised an eyebrow at the crown prince, who seemed to have stayed silent ever since your previous outburst. With a sigh, he finally gave in and spoke his true intentions.
“Aiteng, it might be a bit unfair, considering what has transpired between our family, but please save Amile.” For the first time, he lowered his head in a sincere plea. “We may share different mothers, but she is still an irreplaceable part of our family. I beg you to let her return safely.”

His earnest attitude undoubtedly made it difficult to keep your anger against him.

“You didn’t have to bring my son here to say that,” you replied in a much less aggressive manner. As someone who had been in similar situations far too many times, you did resonate with him this time on a personal level.
“I wanted to ask you privately and... He’s my best chance to get a proper audience with you.”
You noticed his face slightly blushing as he spoke but quickly hid his face with a cough as he realized you were looking at him.
“Ahem… but I digress. Bring Amile back, and in turn, I will work to return Ying back under your custody.”
He said, then gave you a resolute nod and placed his right hand before his chest.
“ I promise you as the Khan’s firstborn, and crown prince of the Tengar Khaganate.”
“I’ll make sure duchess Amile will be back safe and sound.” You managed with a genuine smile as acknowledgment of his offer. “I swear this as the Admiral of the Beiyang Fleet, as well as the third princess of the Yu Dynasty.”
“Thank you, Aiteng.” He bowed again to express his gratitude.
“You are welcome, your Grace. I hope you keep up your end of the bargain.”
You left him and made a beeline for Ying. Like the good child he always was, your son stood there and awaited your return patiently.
“Mommy, is it work again?” He asked warily, asking the same question that popped up every time you had the chance to talk with each other.
“Yes, Mommy has to work,” You squatted down to match his height. “I can only be here with you for a short while…”
You felt your heart almost ripped instantly into shreds the moment those words escaped your mouth. Most of your phone calls with Ying tend to end with you teary-eyed on the other side and to be fair, you wanted to shed some tears right now as well.
But what would happen if you revealed your vulnerable side to him? The last thing you want was for your son to worry day and night about your own safety.

“It’s alright Mommy!” He squeaked energetically. “Mommy said before if I behaved well, then the Khan would allow me to see you, right? Since I got to see Mommy today, this means I’m a good boy, right? If I improve just a bit more I would get to see you for a longer time!”
You smirked at your son's naivete and gave him a pat on the head. He always managed to lit a little flame in your heart even at your darkest moments.

“Don’t worry, mommy will come home soon. ”
You wrapped your son tightly in your arms and gave him a kiss on the forehead as you spent one last moment with him. For his safety and freedom, you were willing to do anything and everything. Even if it meant going heads on against a battleship equipped with a superweapon from the ancient world.

You are Subaru Kurokawa, and all that’s left around you was the smell of the ocean, and the vast open seas with no land in sight. It has been approximately three days since Yamato departed from Kure, and to everyone’s surprise, your only pursuer has been coast guards, who you have easily dealt with.
What was more puzzling for you, however, was Captain Nagamasa Suwabe’s orders to sail south, despite that the East Europan Imperial Alliance, Zipang’s ally, stood just north of the archipelago.

“I’ve flown over oceans before, but being on a ship like this is a first.” A familiar voice alerted me of someone else’s presence on the deck.
“Koishimizu-senpai?”
“What’s with that attitude?” She plopped herself right beside me. Her elbows rested on the bars, line of sight shot straight out to the azure horizon in front. “We did see each other yesterday.”
Well yes, we did meet each other yesterday… on my brief passway across the hangars. Surprisingly enough, the Yamato was actually retrofitted with a short retractable runway and fitted with a small squadron of peculiar aircraft.
Hibari, in particular, took interest almost immediately and ended up spending two whole days in the cockpit of one of those planes just to get to know more about them.

“Here.” She tossed me an energy drink, a relic taken from Kure, “Our next station is Formosa apparently.”
She popped out her own can, then took one big gulp. “No idea why we’re going there, but that’s the Captain’s Orders.”

>I never thought of a day where Senpai would be the one to start a conversation with me.

“Has senpai ever been to Formosa?”
“Why this all of a sudden?” She threw me a look. “Yes I have, but that was quite a long time ago. Setting foot on that highly disputed piece of land always made me uneasy.”
Indeed, Formosa had always been the flashpoint between any conflict involving Zipang and the Yu Dynasty. Though all these conflicts ended up in a stalemate, they also happened quite frequently, the most recent one happened right during the climax of the Second Europan War.
Then again, given the island’s history, it was almost always destined to be a flashpoint regardless whether or not it was Zipang or the Yu that held control over it.

“You should know the place better than I do.” Hibari concluded “After all you do have an estate there.”
“I guess…”
Aside from Kure, my family also had an estate in the Kelung port, on Formosa’s northern tip. It only made sense as father was situated there regularly during the early days of his career. This was also the same estate where Tewi was sent to when the war with the Tengars began.
“Still, better than sitting in the hangar for two days straight.” She took a sip from her drink and continued to stare at the endless ocean.

“Was it really that bad?” To be fair, I was also quite intrigued by those peculiar aircrafts in that brief visit to Yamato’s hangars. However, I decided to stay away in the end so as to not to cause any potential accidents.
“Yes and no.” Her mood lits up a little. “The loot was amazing, but I’ve yet to get used to their controls yet.”
Hibari sounded frustrated at herself for not picking up the controls fast enough, which was pretty in line to the Hibari that I knew of.
“But really, a fighter that could take off horizontally, without a track? Never thought I would see that in my lifetime, much less sit in one.”
“Wait…” I stopped her, confused by one important detail. “Those things can take off without a runway?”

“Crazy isn’t it?” She threw up her arms. “Looks like those dirty barbarians also left some crazy-ass prototypes on this ship, as if this thing itself wasn’t enough of a monster.”
She stomped onto the hard, ragnite formed floor for emphasis, which gave off a crisp grinding sound that felt almost like glass.
“Speaking of which, I've never had the chance to take a look at the engine that powers this sucker yet. Must be something that's just as crazy.”
Her words also reminded me of Margaret, who had presumably been staying in the boiler room all the the moment she boarded Yamato.
“Anyways,” She finished off her drink. “Guess I'll be back in the cockpit today as well. Maybe I could finally get those things to show off their gimmicks for once.”

>“Do you need some help?”

I bid Hibari farewell as the two of us went our separate ways. She headed back to the hangar, while I descended deeper into the heart of the battleship alone.
Walking the corridors leading to the boiler room was not much different from diving deeper and deeper into unfamiliar seas. Even at noon outside, where the sun hung bright and proud in the sky, the innards of the battleship was devoid of sunlight, only dimly lit by bulbs, getting darker and darker as I descend- that is until a faint azure glow began pouring from the walls, running along the pipelines. Its shine grew progressively more and more intense the deeper I went, sending a tingle down my spine, but at the same time left a good indication as to where I was heading.

The boiler room wasn’t that hard to find. No other room on the Yamato had such heavy, watertight door with such peculiar spiral markings, with all the glowing ragnite pipelines integrating at this spot. Blue light flickered through the pipe’s joints as the structure pulsated like some sort of beating organ. The first thing that came to my mind was Margaret’s spear, Rhongomyniad, that had a similar vibe. I expect this door and everything else behind it to be made of similar material.

I twisted the handwheel, opening the door as the same magnificent glow escaped from the crevasses, only to be greeted with a stern order to “Close it!”
“Akasaka-san?” I did as I told and shut the door behind and identified the other person in this room.
“Shh.” She reacted immediately by placing her index finger on my lips a gesture for me to keep quiet. “Follow.”

I was guided through a long hall of the same type of structure. Walls, pillars, and even the floor the two of us walked beneath were all covered in a grayish concrete-like material, adorned with spiral engravings big and small. On these walls inscribed a language that was both ancient and foreign, tracing back to an age long lost.

My sight printed straight onto my tour guide, Akane Akasaka. Despite everything that appeared mysterious and alien here, she was the one that felt the most out of the frame here.
She was at least part Darcsen, just like Tewi and I, but somehow managed to walk close with Margaret and her family, some of the most influential people within the Darcsen-loathing Empire. Her ability to casually put on a ‘new face’ to fit her needs only muddied the waters even more.

“Here.” She pulled herself to a stop abruptly, standing right next to a spherical structure bathed in a strong, azure illumination. “Careful not to stare for too long, it’s going to hurt your eyes.”
Sitting in a seat at the heart of the device was Margaret, dressed in bare minimum and with numerous wires attached all over her skin. Her eyes were tightly shut, her hands forcefully grasped onto the handlebars on the sides as the rest of her body tensed, trickles of sweat droplets ran off her exposed skin like a light summer rain. Whatever she was doing appeared to bore a pressure so intense even that superhuman body of hers was having trouble keeping up.

“She channels her energy to ‘wield’ the Yamato, much like with Rhongomyniad,” Akane explained, sounding as if this was just part and parcel. “According to Mori’s research, it would require tremendous amounts of focus to transmit enough power, thus very straining on the body and psyche, even for Valkyrur.”
“On the other hand,” She added. “The system only requires replenishing every few hours, so technically there’s no need for her to stay there for this long.”
“Why is she still connected to that thing then!?” I grabbed Akane by the shoulder in a burst of emotions. Sure, this had to be done, but I still cannot bear seeing Margaret in this state.

“I know you are concerned.” Akane calmly reassured. “But she chose to do this in her own volition.”
“Why?”
“Because she wanted to get used to it as soon as possible, and in her own words: This way Yamato could reach Formosa within two days.”
There was a soft groan as Margaret winced under the stress she was experiencing.
“What was I to do?” Akane shrugged with a sigh. “I couldn’t stop her from doing whatever she wants. Few people abroad this ship could.”

“Thankfully, the ‘few’ that could change her mind is standing right beside me.” She shot me a mischievous smirk, followed shortly with a pat on the back.
“Can’t bust out the prince charming outfit now, but hey, this uniform works fine.”
“Akasaka-san, does such thing even exist on this ship?” I deflected her embarrassing tease with a blush. Akane only laughed in return.
“I’ll get you one if possible. Now go save that stubborn princess before she burns herself out.”

I walked up the platform, which led me to stand face to face with the Valkyria who has finally noticed my presence. Even in this state, she appeared just as magnificent as she had always been.
“Subaru-kun?” She uttered my name between short breaths, her ample chest rose and fell rhythmically as the ship’s engine continued to drain away her energy. Margaret did not move, but a faint smile formed on her face.

Is this one of those snow cruiser bullshittery in VC4? If so then Margaret would be better off ditching her family altogether.

“You don’t have to do this to yourself.” I placed a hand on hers, noticing her pulse racing much faster than usual.
“...It’s my duty,” her eyes opened as she forced a weak smile. “It’s my part in this mission. I have to-”
“Doesn't mean you have to deliberately break your back doing it.”
“But then we won't be able to reach Formo…”
“Formosa is just the first stop. There’s still a long way to go.” I continued in an attempt to talk sense into her. “Besides, don’t they say ‘resting is to prepare for a long journey ahead’?”

Margaret lowered her head in doubt. She probably did see my point, but at the same time didn’t want to handle her task in a sloppy manner. At least, in a way which she perceived to be.
“Hm… You’re right. Maybe pushing too hard this early isn’t a good idea.”
After a moment of silence, she finally agreed. Immediately, I began to help her remove the electrode pads attached to her skin.

“Come, you need some rest. And a bath.”
I took off my coat and draped it over her shoulder, then offered a hand to help her off the seat.
“A bath? But Subaru-kun, we’re in the middle of the ocean.” Margaret rose to her full height, her two arms grasping tightly onto both the seat’s handles in order to balance the rest of her body. She merely managed two unstable steps before her legs gave up and she lost balance, tumbling forward.
Instinctively, I placed myself between Margaret and the floor, lending her my shoulder for her to shift her entire weight onto myself. While being in such close contact with a barely clothed Valkyrur beauty should’ve been quite a thrill, at this point, I was more concerned about her well being than enjoying this process. However, since she was at least a head taller than I am, I had to focus on my balance to not land both of us in worse conditions.

“You’ll be surprised by the facilities they equipped this ship with,” I said, barely catching a breath as I struggled to hold her up.
The ‘bath’ wasn’t metaphorical as well. As a complete surprise to all of us, Yamato was fitted with two separate sets of fully functional bathing units, one in the officers’ quarters and the other in the Captain’s chamber. Then again, considering this was supposed to be the new flagship for Beiyang, commanded by none other than the former royalty Lord Admiral herself, I suppose a bath wasn’t too far fetched.

Now, in order to conserve precious freshwater resources aboard the ship, access to the bath is strictly regulated by a lottery system. Up until now, only less than a handful of lucky winners had been granted limited time to use the facility- and while the overseer of the facility was none other than my dear sister, not even I was granted special admittance.
“You can take the onsen once we reach Formosa, nii-san,” she said when I asked her about it.
The ladies, on the other hand, somehow always won the lottery no matter what. I’m starting to doubt the fairness of this system…

I drifted my gaze towards Akane, who apparently bore zero intention the help me out with my situation. The only thing she contributed was a suggestive grin, which was just about as helpful as nothing.
“It’s okay, Subaru-kun, I can walk by myself.” I heard Margaret speak softly over my shoulder. Ever since meeting her those months ago and witnessing her prowess on the battlefield afar, never in my life have I thought of witnessing her in such a weakened, vulnerable state.
“You clearly cannot, Margaret-san. Not now.” I told her the brass and bold truth. Word was that the Valkyrur recovered from fatigue and injury faster than any normal person would, but until Margaret could stand up properly, it was my duty to assist her.

Tewi sat on an armchair right next to the bathhouse entrance, with a pile of clean towels in a laundry cart to her right, some bars of soap on her left, and a... pump-action shotgun on her lap. Why in the world would she need that?
“Hey Tewi, can you let her in?” I asked my sister with a wry smile. My shoulders were already aching from the additional weight placed on them.

Fortunately for me, my sister was not Akane. She jumped into action almost immediately, placing the shotgun aside to hold Margaret from the other shoulder to help her sit down on the armchair. Her remarks however, were much sharper than the tank driver.
“What are you doing!? You should take her to the infirmary, not here!”
“I’m okay, Tewi-chan.” Margaret gave my sister some reassurement. “I’m just a bit… tired. I’ll be fine with a little rest.”
“But you…”
“Tewi.” I patted her on the shoulder. “Margaret-san tends to recover… quite quickly.”

True to my words, Margaret looked better now compared to her previous state. The color of life has returned to her figure, and I suppose the bath would probably allow her to recover even faster.
“Fine, you’d better be!” Tewi fetched a fresh towel from a pile and handed it to the fatigued Valkyria. “Here, use this. I’ll be here to help if you still have problems stan...”
“Thank you, Tewi-chan.” Margaret took the towel. “I think I could stand on my own now.”
The Valkyria arose to her full height, as tall and domineering as always. She had recovered enough to stand on her own two feet, and though she was still a bit disoriented when it came to walking, this was still far better than the Margaret who was in the boiler room.
“And you too, Subaru-kun.” She returned my coat and finished off with a kiss on my cheek. “I’ll recover as soon as possible, so you won’t have to worry!”

My sister and I stood as Margaret entered the bath. As soon as the doors slammed shut, I felt my sister grab tightly onto my left hand, which instinctively clasped onto the cheek where Margaret planted a kiss on.
“Nii-san,” Tewi tuts, hands on her hips with a darkened expression. “Why is that everytime I see you, you’re cuddling with some half-naked girl, drenched in sweat?”

>What can I say, I guess I’m charming that way?
>You cannot blame me for coincidences.
>How is it that only the girls get to use the bath?

“Dunno, the same reason the girls always win the lottery?”
Tewi glared at me sideways, hands crossed before her chest.
“You’re not salty about not getting to use the bath, are you?”

“What? No. I’m just curious.” To be fair, she was partly correct, but all this was nonetheless stemmed from that dubious, obviously rigged lottery system.
“Nii-san, with all the facilities on this ship, have you noticed anything missing?”
“Not in particular?”

“Nii-san,” she stomped a foot on the ground. “There are no girls’ shower room on this ship.”
Her words struck me with a sudden clarity. With that piece of information, now everything started to make sense, including the possible reason why my sister is sitting out here openly brandishing a shotgun.
“So that shotgun…”
“Yep, just as you imagined.” Tewi held up a shell she took out from her pocket. “Don’t worry, these are only bean bags. Not lethal, but enough to make it a pain train to sick bay for morons dumb enough to try peeking or not abide by the rules.”

“Has anyone actually, you know…?”
“Fortunately not. Pretty much everyone decided it’s best to play nice after seeing this thing.” She gave the shotgun a proud pat.

“But enough about this.” She placed the weapon aside and adopted a softer tone. “You haven’t answered my question.”
“It’s… complicated.”
That was the best explanation I could come up for now. Everything that has transpired between the Margaret, Yanagi and I till now can mostly be attributed to a long series of coincidences… as well as the strange circumstances we always somehow end up in. Regardless, it would be far too confusing to explain everything to my sister right now.

“Welp, you’re a big boy now. I’m not gonna interfere with your personal life.” My sister shrugged, and then whispered in a rather serious tone. “Just remember, if you’re hopping between two sides of a fence, you’d better be careful not to get impaled by it.”

That sounded very much like some convoluted omen from a fortune teller, except this time I knew exactly what the she was referring to.
“I’ll keep that in mind.” I replied, taking her advice to heart. I suppose I do indeed need to take some time to think about the nature of the relationship I have with those two, but that can wait for some other day.
“Good. Now, you probably have better things to do as well, don’t you?”

I returned back to the comms post, specifically that same room with the poor ventilation but staffed with all the most intricate machinery. Well, it certainly looked a lot more organized than I first remembered it back then, though everything else remained practically the same.

“Yanagi?” I looked around the room and called her name, but all I got was radio silence.
“Finding someone?”
Wait a minute, was this…
I spun around, only to find my old friend Satoru standing behind, almost as if he appeared from thin air.

“You’re finding Yanagi too?”
“Well yeah.” He scratched the back of his head. “I believe she has something for us, no? Heard it was a new product from her company…”
A more accurate description would be one of the last pieces of tech Morishima Tsuushin was able to piece together before the war ended and their factories confiscated by the Steppe Barbarians. Then again, if it was an actual piece of work by Yanagi’s family company, then it should be something worth looking forward to.

“Oh wow, looks like I’m late… again.”
With a self-depreciating mock to catch our attention, Yanagi entered the room, this time dressed adequately. As usual, she was always the last among the three of us to arrive at a meetup.
“Around 45 seconds.” Satoru quipped back, taking a quick look at his watch. “I hope your gift matches the quality to up for this.”
“Shut it, Satoru.” She shot back playfully. “This baby is worth far more than anything you can put on the table.”
“Then we shall see” My friend adjusted his glasses with a smug grin. “I expect much from the debut work of Morishima Tuushin’s heir to the throne.”

“I’m already the company’s head, idiot.” Yanagi puffed her chest out confidently. “And I am certain my debut work is no less impressive than daddy and everyone else that came before me!”
I almost forgot, with the confiscation of their factories and the immense loss of personnel throughout the Tengar-Zipang conflict, Yanagi was technically the head of her family’s business now. Though at this point it’s no less different than inheriting an empire of dirt.

“Here.” She placed a small device in my hand.
“I call this a pager. Think of it as a better mailing device, except you can only transmit 5 words. Works within a 20-mile radius.” Yanagi continued to explain, “Not enough for long distance messages, but it should be enough for whatever battles we are fighting, and informing each other on the ship.”

“A solid debut work isn’t it?” Yanagi tucked her arms under her breasts, she was asking me specifically to be her judge.

“Morishima Tuushin continues to deliver expectations, even on a tight budget.” I said, examining the device in my hand. Even if there is a restriction of only 5 letters, keeping in contact could change a life-or-death situation on the battlefield. However, the device did raise some questions.
“Though I wonder, how does a device this small have the transmitting capability of a military radio?”
“Simple. I wired the transmitter to use the Yamato’s comms system as the relay.”

“Wait… so that’s what the metal box was for?” I remembered the event two days ago and instantly connected the dots.
“Precisely!” Yanagi held her head up high “It took quite a while to set up all this, but it’s all worth the while.”
“I guess there’s none for me then?” Satoru shrugged. It was an all too familiar behavior of him trying to bait out a response, and Yanagi went with it regardless.
“Only for people who aren’t petty bastards, but here’s yours.” She tossed over another one of those transmitters, which my friend caught in the air.

“There will be more coming soon,” Yanagi promised, taking out her own device. “But I only made three for now. You’d better take good care of them!”
“Luckily we’re not Akasaka.” Satoru smiled in conjunction with his usual witty response.
“Of course, it’s Yanagi’s debut invention after all.” I smiled at Yanagi. This was probably her real reason for reminding us to take care of the transmitter, and the faint blush on her face sort of gave it away.

As perfect as the timing could be, an ear-splitting siren boomed throughout the halls.
“E--Enemy attack!?” Yanagi darted her eyes around like a frightened cat.
“Tch, didn’t take them that long, didn’t they?” Satoru bit his lower lip. “As expected from Beiyang, always quick on their feet.”

Right, I guess this would be a good place to end the thread, then starting the other with a full naval confrontation. (Which I already have the next part down.)

No VC story is complete without the MC getting his Ubermensch waifu it seems, but I'm still miffed that the quest went down with the "Out of your league foreigner vs Childhood friend" route
