After what feels like a really long day, you settle down on your study chair and pull up a notebook...

You pull open a shelf, and grab the only contents from within: a pen, and the blue filler notebook you've been using to write that "novel". You flip to the first page and read the title : The Parable of the Moth.

You've decided to keep track of all that's happened so far in the guise of that book that you're writing. You flip over to the next page and start to add to the story...

"The Parable of the Moth" will now serve as the official guide for Mob Character Quest. If you feel there are things you want included or fixed feel free to let me know via here or on Twitter.

After finishing up the latest entry in your "story," you lean back on your chair and think about Tezuka Rei's idea. Your mind wanders back to the conversation you had at the rooftop earlier...

"Think about it, Yamada-kun," Tezuka Rei says. From the almost hopeless air she had on a while ago, it's completely changed to unbound excitement.

"If all we need to have happen is for Hikaru Ryou to experience love...then it doesn't matter if it's a boy or a girl, right?"
"Well...I mean..."

"Does Ryou even swing that way?"

"I don't..."

"If we also account the fact that she gained a reputation for stealing away men, and that the person she currently likes is a guy, then...it's no use, Tezuka."

"B-But!" It seems she is determined not to let this chance go by easy.
"Maybe it's because she's never experimented before!"
"Have you?"
"N-No...I've only ever fallen for one idiot. I don't think I like Ryou, or any of my friends that way."

"Then why do you insist on doing this?"
"Because she's my friend. I don't want Ryou-chan to suffer anymore. I don't want her to keep coming back to those old wounds just for them to reopen and hurt her again..."

You notice Rei's hands clenched in tight fists. When she sees your stare, though, she calms back down and loosens her grip.

"You know...You've been the first guy she's been friendly with apart from Ei-kun. I thought it would be you that..."

Her voice tapers off and she stares off the distance from the rooftop. You shake your head.
"That's impossible, even for back then. She's always liked Nakamura-san."
"No, Yamada-kun. She's always liked the idea of love. That's why she likes Ei-kun. That's why she stole away all those other boys in love too. She wanted to be loved...and who could fault the boys when someone as beautiful as her wants your attention?"

You stay silent. You know full well the effects she has on a [Mob], on Yamada Ken.

"That's why..." Rei continues, "That's why this will work. If I give her enough love, then maybe I could get her to look at me in someway too."

>So you'll be lying to her. I can't support that.
>What you say makes sense. How could I help?

"Then you'd be lying to her, Tezuka...I don't know if I could support that."
"But I do like her, right?"
"Not in the way that you're proposing."

She stays silent, gritting her teeth. You continue.

"Look, another way would present itself okay? If Ryou has endured until today then..."
You mean to say 'she could endure just a bit more', but even you are doubtful.

If she reaches the tipping point...

You fear you might be looking at a [BAD END].

"Yamada-kun...you don't understand. If Hikaru Ryou doesn't find a partner in less than two weeks, it would be all over."

"In two weeks? Why that specific time frame?"

The class bell rings. Tezuka Rei turns around and heads toward the door.

"That's the day we go to Jigokuyama."

"Alright, c'mon now, everyone back to their seats!"

With Hikaru Ryou back as the class rep of 2-1, the entire place seemed to become a lot more disciplined. The gomasuri attacks have lessened with her around, though they have yet to completely disappear. You remember Kobayashi Mariko's words earlier...

>Someone with say...an ace in the hole.

You get dragged out of your thoughts, however, when Ryou clears her throat.

"I'm sorry to be holding you up just before dismissal, but it's 2 weeks until our trip to Hokkaido! We need to be clearing up all the details now so that we could be prepared once the date comes. I'm really sorry for this. You guys alright?"

The classroom returns a semi-enthused response.

"Alright! We've gone over the basics already...3 days 2 nights...Hokkaido...ah here! Everyone needs to be at the airport at 7am sharp. If you arrive late, the admin made clear that there won't be any refunds, got it?"

After seeing the nods of agreement, Ryou returns to the handout in her hand.

"We'll be heading to Takamoto Inn as soon as we get there. It's just right next to Lake Asa so I expect everyone to bring repellant, okay? What else..."

She scans through the paper before landing on a particular article. The class rep beams.

"I almost forgot! Don't forget to bring your PE uniforms, since we'll also be climbing Jigokuyama!"

That's the second time you heard that name today. Just what is so vital about that place?

You lean over to your left while the class rep continues her orientation.

"Hanazawa."
"Hm?"
"What's with all the talks about Jigokuyama? Is there something I should know about?"

"...Eh?"

She seems to be in disbelief with your question.

"Eh? Did I say something wrong?"
"No, it's not that..."

Hanazawa looks at you with a complicated expression. It feels like she's doubting your knowledge - or lack of it in this case - about Jigokuyama.

"...Are you playing with me, Yamada-kun?"
"No, I'm serious! I really don't know anything about it."

You don't think there was a Jigokuyama in Hokkaido from where you were from originally.

She stares at you, brows furrowed. This whole situation gets more and more bizarre by the second.

"Is it something I should know?"
"...It's something I hope you knew."
"Is it that hard to tell me, then?"
"..."

What's with all this ominosity with the place?

"I'm sorry, Hanazawa. I, er, am still dealing with the fuzzy head thing..."
It wasn't an entirely false excuse either, but you've had a modicum of control over it these past few days.

"..."
She stares at her desk, quiet. Does she not believe you?

"Promise me something first, Yamada-kun. Then I'll tell you."
"Er, What's the promise?"

She doesn't look up from the desk. "That we'll go up there together."

"If it's bad enough for you to be this cagey about it, then alright, I promise. Although I probably would've asked you to come with me anyway..."

She stares at the desk for a bit longer. Then, Hanazawa takes a deep breath, and tells me a story.

"There once was a mountain with a gorge that lead straight to hell. Jigokuyama was its name, and it was considered unholy ground and forbidden for anyone to enter.
"One day, a traveller wanders unknowingly into the mountain. There she met a beautiful woman, crying. The woman was a demon.
"When the traveller asked her why she was crying, the woman said that it was because she was so lonely. No person would enter the mountain, so most days she talked to no-one except the brances or the animals.
"The traveller, pitying the girl, stayed, and eventually they fell in love with each other.
"However, the people outside of Jigokuyama learned of this, and was determined to take back the traveller from what they believed was a monster.
"The two lovers could not bare to be separated, or to see each other hurt. So what they did..."

Hanazawa turns and looks you dead in the eye.

"Is they jumped from a cliff in Jigokuyama, and they fell to their deaths hand in hand."
"..."
"Romantic, isn't it?"
"...Well..."

"People believe that couples that climb Jigokuyama will have the two lovers torn apart...

"Unless they jump like the demon and the traveller did."

Hanazawa smiles.

So uh...I fell asleep xD this'll be the last update for now, then I'll be resuming it at 1500 or 1600 UTC later.

Now wait just a second there...

Did Hanazawa just ask...
If you'd like to...?

You clear your throat. Well, if she's serious about this then you need to give a serious answer back too.

"It's romantic in a way...but it also sounds like the couple weren't willing to fight for their love. These days...I kinda feel like I'd rather go down fighting for the person I love than surrender to whatever anyone else thinks or wants."

She looks at you, stunned.
Then, Hanazawa turned an intense shade of red.

"...oke."
"Hm?"
"It was a joke, Yamada-kun! Geez...Did you really think I'm asking you to kill ourselves?"

She's still blushing from cheek to cheek.

"But if that's what you wanted, I'd really do it?"
"Shut up. Yamada-kun, please, not in public..."

You chuckle. At least now you see the hesitation in Hanazawa in telling you what Jigokuyama is all about.

"They didn't even die in the legend." Hanazawa added, trying to change the subject. "The goddess of the mountain, showing favor in their love, turned them into water and they fell from the skies as a soft rain. The rain water covered the holes leading to hell, and that's why we have bubbling hot springs. Yet the place is pretty notorious for idiots who want to follow the legend..."
"I genuinely didn't know that. It's morbidly fascinating, in a way."
"Yeah...that's why Jigokuyama is famous with l...er, lo...hmm..."
"Lovers?"

Hanazawa hits you in the shoulder.
"Yamada-kun!"
You laugh, despite her seriously putting some force into that. You forgot for a second that you're relationship is not public yet.

But now you understand better why Hanazawa wanted to climb Jigokuyama with you.

And why you have to stop the romantic that is Hikaru Ryou from climbing Jigokuyama at all costs.

It's been a while since you last showed your face to the soccer club. You -did- say you were going to join...

So after changing to your PE clothes, you head to the field, where the other sports clubs are already practicing. While the track & field clubs are stretching just outside the oval, inside the track the soccer club is already in the middle of a game.

"Woah! Thought I recognized someone!" you hear.
A college aged guy comes jogging toward you. Ogai, the coach who for some reason is playing alongside as well, leaves the game to welcome you. The ball stops rolling when they notice him leave, and the players stare at you. You could almost hear the curses under their breath.

"Oi, oi, continue the play!" Ogai claps, and the other members resume playing again. He returns back to you, grinning as always.

"Long time no see, Yamada. You up for a game of footy?"

"I'm good to go. Put me in coach."
"All fired up today I see! Alright, go take my position."

You nod and jog towards the field. You've only taken a few steps when you remembered something.
"Hey, coach! What's your position?"
"Left Forward! Go, go, go, we ain't got all day!"

The moment you stepped on the pitch you feel the glares of all the players on you. You could understand why. They wanted to play against the coach, not some 38 year old guy who's never touched a ball in this life, nor the last one.

"You got some balls to show your face around here! I'd have thought the gomasuri would be too embarassed after that shameful tryout~."

One particular guy with sunken eyes walks right up to your face. He's tall and lanky, and had to bend his neck down to look you right in the eye.
"Imma give you the chance to get outta here, ass-kisser, before I shame you even more in front of these guys here."

"You say that like I don't know you hate me. You think I'd be here if I really didn't want to play?"
The guy smirks. "Why, for all I know you're just trying to sidle up to Ogai-san! I mean, isn't that your thing? Brown-nosing?"

He sneers, and you could hear some of the others giggling. This guy has it way deep on you already. You decide to ignore him and take your position as the left forward.

"Alright, throw in for white team! Resume play!"

It seems that you're in the white team. A teammate of yours picks up the ball from outside the pitch, and is looking for an open player to pass to. A couple of you step up to try and receive the ball, including yourself.

You feel the lanky guy right behind you. Though tall, you think you might be able to outstrength him. Your other team-mates are marked by defenders their own sizes. You feel like you're in the best place to receive the ball.

However, when your team-mate sees you, his brow furrows. He glances at the other players, but seemed to arrive at the same conclusion as you did. However, he still seems hesitant...

"Hey!"
You call the attention of your teammate. That seemed enough to shake him off his stupor. He throws the ball at you.

You catch it with your foot. You bring it down near perfectly. The ball lands on the turf, ready for you to bring it up to the enemy goal.

However, you lose your balance. You misjudged the tall, lanky, sunken eyed guy. He is able to push you away despite you trying your best to resist him. He runs and collects the ball ahead of you, and passes it back to the black team goalkeeper.

"Nice try~" the guy says with a tongue out.

The goalkeeper kicks it to the midfield. You--

You run up to the player who has the ball. You travel a considerable length to get towards him, but the opportunity's too good to let slip.

The black team player has his head down. He has no idea you're there. Someone shouts to catch his attention. It's too late. You're faster with momentum on your side.

You make a tackle, and the guy stumbles the ball. You regain posession. He tries to stop you, nails digging into skin. You shrug him off. You start rumbling down towards the keeper.

The black team's goalkeeper is big and stoic. He looks straight at you, not intimidated at your break away.

You feel the other team catching up to you. No time to think, pick a spot, and kick...!

You were an unathletic 38 year old man in your previous life. A NEET. A shut in. You thought the physical fitness exams were a pain already, let alone the thought of playing a sport for recreation.

Yet, knowing all that in the back of your head...

You kick.

The ball flew straight with next to no spin. The goalkeeper stood in the middle with his hands up, expecting a routine save.
It took him less than half a second to realise he was dead wrong.

The ball starts to spin, and the entire trajectory of the kick changes. The flight pattern veers to the left in a millisecond. The goalkeeper, expecting a ball straight at him, was standing on his heels.

The ball flies past him. Goal.

No one celebrated. Not Ogai, not the white team. Not even you did. Only one person reacted.

"I-I-Impossible!" The lanky guy let out a cry of disbelief.
That was enough to break the ice. The white team starts cheering. You break into a smile.

You just scored your first ever goal in two lifetimes, and boy, what a beaut it was.

The game ends with the white team winning, mainly due to the sunken-eyed guy getting more and more frustrated as the game went on. Before the final whistle was even blown, he had stomped out of the field to who knows where.

Of course, you're not naive enough to think that a nice soccer goal was enough to turn people's opinion. The black team leaves with them largely ignoring you. However, your team-mates at least took the effort to pat you on the back and thank you for the goal.

You find yourself alone by the sinks washing up, when you see Ogai approaching you.
"Good game out there, Yamada."
"Thanks, coach."
"Please. Ogai's fine."

While you wipe your face, Ogai stares up at the ceiling, smiling.
"Hey, Yamada. Could I ask you something out of the blue?"
"Yeah?"
"Why did you join the soccer club?"

"Well...our class rep suggested I do it. Wasn't sure it was a great idea at first, but honestly I'm kind of liking it nowadays. It's good to let some tension out."
"That's good to hear. So does that mean you'll be attending more practices from now on?"
"Well..."

Ogai laughs. "I'm just playing with you. We're just a fun club, and I want you guys to treat it as such too. Don't feel obligated that you have to show up just because."
What a happy-go-lucky philosophy.
"Although, I *do* take summer camp very seriously. I want your commitment that you could attend that, or else you might as well be out now. Got it?"
You don't really have any plans for summer anyway, so you see no reason to disagree.

"Great! Promise, I won't get all that scary at camp!" He claps his hands in satisfaction. "Then, I shouldn't be holding you for long. Take care, man."
"Thanks for today, Ogai."

He answers with a salute, and disappears around the corridor.

The sun is just about setting when you left school. As you walk down the path towards home, you hear a loud metallic grinding noise. The sound of the chains of an old swingset. Usually just something to ignore, but for some reason, your attention is drawn this time around.

*creak*, *creak*

In the middle of the playground, a familiar face is playing by himself on the swings.

"Ah, aniki. What a surprise."
Kei said, in a tone that did not feign any surprise at all.

He continues swinging on the swing-set while standing, a faint smile on his face.
A momentary silence occurs with him saying nothing. Until,

"Hey, aniki. What do you think is your life all about?"

Well... arent I technically dead and awaiting jugement? "At the moment? My life is about not getting a [BAD END]. That and seeing if I can't make any sense of this at all."
"'Making sense,' huh..."
He sighs out.
"Is there a point to all that, aniki?"
"What do you mean?"
"You already know what needs to be done, right? Grant [Happiness] to the main characters of this world."
He...seems different. His high energy, bubbly persona is not here.

"I do know that."
"Do you, though?"
"...What? You're confusing me, Kei."
"You tell me that you know." He continues to swing while staring at the ground.
"And yet here you are playing soccer with [Mobs], having a girlfriend [Mob]...Is that what you want, aniki? To become a [Mob] character for the rest of your second chance?"

"So what? I'm not allowed happiness for myself now? Maybe you're forgetting, but it's me that needs to bring happiness to Nakamura Eiji, to the girls, to you. So--"
"Could I tell you a story, aniki?"
Kei jumps from the swing set, and starts to walk toward you.

"This is the story of a main character of a harem romcom. Five nice girls liked him, but his dense nature and their goofy antics together tied up to hilarious hijinks. He had a best friend, a comedian who would regularly break the fourth wall...you might even say it's all cliche.

"But then a variable showed up. An entity that shouldn't have existed, that messed up the balance of the world. Someone stuck their nose where it didn't belong, and destroyed the scales from whence the universe hang. Now tell me, aniki, does that man deserve any [Happiness]?"

He walks up to you until you're both face to face. He should be your little brother, but his shadow envelopes your body.

"Nakamura Eiji needs his harem to be fulfilled so that the purpose of this world may be fulfilled. And I would not permit the [Damned] to interfere solely for his own [Happiness]."

And for the first time since you talked, Kei grins.

"I'll start by instilling you with fear once more."

(TO BE CONTINUED)

>>
>>2843221
Wait a minute hold on. This is actually not making any sense. Like meta-narrative or not.

I need to get something straight here. Is he angry with us for supposedly interfering with something? If so, what have we interfered with in particular? I know we've been attempting to get class rep to get over him. Is that the issue? I mean that's still in the early stages. We haven't actually done a good job of splitting up the harem. Not to mention this literally goes against the entire inital theme and premise of the quest that we spent a number of trying to figure out that he actually instructed us to do anyway.

Sooo... he's mad that we are just starting to do what he didn't want us to do, but he lied in the first place we asked him what we needed to do and told us to do the thing he DIDN'T want us to do.

Is this confusing to anyone else? BSG, are you following your notes a bit too closely?

Kei is looking at us as an ascended extra of the worst kind--and in a sense, we are. Before our involvement in the plot this probably was going to be a paint-by-numbers harem anime, with all the cliches involved--festival episode, beach episode, a complete communications breakdown and some juicy fan teasing moments. Sunrise, sunset. All the arcs would be clearly delineated and existence would have been predictable, comfortable. Safe.

Then we show up. A free radical. A lone variable. The monkey wrench in the system. From our attempts to link up with Hanazawa and befriending (to varying degrees) the harem, we have completely screwed up the character dynamics of this universe. The series has become something a lot less predictable and, in a sense, a lot of that narrative punch that you'd expect from the typical plot is now gone. The stakes are a little more real. The characters, once pastiches of anime archetypes, are forced to evolve--and that goes not only for the principal characters, but supporting characters as well, like Hanazawa or our jogging buddy. The overarching conflict has transitioned from "ensure MC gets his dick wet" to something of a critique on the human system and the individual drive to find happiness in a social media driven void that is the Japanese High School.

And Kei hates that. So what he's trying right now is to forcefully realign the plot.

Which tells me that someone is probably gonna get Truck-Kun'd.
>>
>>2843395
No, I kinda get that. MY issue is that he TOLD US TO BE CRAZY IN THE FIRST PLACE. I think.

So... were going to get Truck-kun'd again... Got Dam... This is the worst game walkthrough ever made...
>>
>>2843395
Look, we just need to grab him by the shoulders, and tell him to be as clear as possible. Because right now he's contradicting himself by getting mad at us for being crazy and getting class rep to get over the MC, when THAT'S WHAT HE LED US TO THINK HE WANTED. He's deluding us for no fucking reason, and we need to get his reason out of him by being as blunt as possible.
>>
>>2843452
I don't think we're gonna be the ones pancaked by a passing semi. It might be mom, might be dad. Might even be one of the girls. If Kei's feeling particularly cruel it might even be Hanazawa. He wants to keep us on our toes the same way a gang might keep extortion money rolling by threatening or killing loved ones around a principal target, and that's the best way to do it.

>>2843422
He tolerated our existence because we didn't pose a threat to the narrative at that point in time. Now we do pose a threat and, rather reasonably, is trying to stop us from going Full Retard and undoing the universe through our shenanigans.
>>
>>2843498
But then why did he tell us to seek Happiness in the first place if he didn't want it to happen? He's not making any damn sense.
>>
>>2843452

I wanna keep going with our behind-the-scenes manipulation of events the way we've been playing this out. If our metabro fuckhead actually has someone we know killed to make us fall in line for vague as fuck reasons, then we might consider going full legendary [PUNISHED] Ken Yamada - A [Damned] Remnant from Beyond.

Basically I want a way for us to exert influence and control without threat of [Erasure] or direct universal fuckery, or interference from the metabro, but miscommunication and idiocy/hostility from everyone around us will be our own downfall.

This is the [devil] we're talking about. We outright know that we died, and we outright know that we are one of the [damned].
We can't fully trust anything he says at face value. The [devil] is a figure which either tempts people into the wrong path, or punishes them for their sins - sometimes both. We can't discount the possibility that, right now, he is trying to lead us wrong while punishing us.
Don't be lead astray, anons. Stay the path. The people around us might be [mobs], but they deserve happiness just as much as the [main characters]. Don't fall for his tricks. He wants us to forget about them, to focus on [God] and his [Harem], but that's not the path to [Salvation].
Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
We cannot ignore anyone's [Happiness].

I'm still not sure this is actually limbo. I had a theory a while back that feels too off base from everything we've been told up to this point for me to think it still has a shot at being accurate, but I can't quite shake it off either.

I feel like the point of this world is to absorb the souls of people who have a wish, like, a really intense, genuine desire, and it creates these worlds to absorb the soul, but these worlds only exist to allow the person to achieve their wish, so it can't exist once the wish is actually granted, so it traps souls in this weird limbo of their wish only being partially granted, and keeps them in this state until the soul is fully devoured. It likely usually bends the victim's memories a bit in order to succeed, so most victims might not even know of their past life or the wish that brought them here, but our character does due to the nature of our character's wish.

Anyway, I can ramble further if ya want, but to take a guess that might actually matter: I think our little brother is mad because our arrival kicked him out of the position he was supposed to be in, and so he needs us to do what he was originally going to do. I mean, he keeps talking about the 'show' needing a funny 4th wall breaking guy, but he pretty much never interacts with the other main characters, so whatever his goal was, the only way he can fulfill it is through us, and he's getting upset because he doesn't think we're doing anything to help with that.

That would seem ideal, but that really would only set into motion a revenge plot wherein, with our only motivation to find [Happiness] taken away, we would have no other choice but to actively harass and deconstruct the world around the MC in an effort to just burn in all down. Kei knows we can do that, though, and from the threat of what would surely be Mutually Assured Destruction he has refrained from doing something so drastic--so far, anyway.

>>2844402

I'm afraid we can't act without being noticed in some way--like it or not, we've become ingrained into this world's narrative plot while actively shaping it (there's a "critiquing society while participating in said society" joke living in there somewhere, I swear). Eyes will be on us now whatever we do--both in and out of the narrative; let's not forget that this whole thing is a TV show being produced in meatspace and that there are active moves being taken to see that this convoluted ass harem anime only bewilders and delights its probably massively shifting fanbase demographic.
>>

>>
>>2844741
At most you'll probably get theorycrafting about the odd background characters. From the MC's viewpoint, what's the weirdest thing that's ever happened in this quest?

Not from the MC's viewpoint, but from the audience's viewpoint we appeared as a faceless extra to be the butt of the joke scene where the harem briefly united to not let us into their club. And then, for some reason, we were reused as an important character in Ryou's and Tezuka's character arcs.
This, I assume, would spawn some fan theories and likely a small fanbase who ironically proclaims us to be best husbando.

It is morning, and you are going on your routine jog.

>"I'll start by instilling you with fear once more..."

Those were the words your little brother said before he disappeared. An ominous statement, a threat, a warning...

But when you got home it feels as if nothing's changed at all.
Your father welcomes you with a hearty dinner, and your mother joins in as soon as she's arrived.
You also woke up fine in this morning. The sun and the cool air of Yumegawa feels no different from the previous day.

"...What the hell..."

You're confused, not only by the meaning behind those words, but also what prompted Kei to lash out like he did.
You remember him saying something about this place being purgatory. That you should be content since you should be dead in the first place.
That you don't deserve [Happiness].

"..."

You try to turn your attention back to your jog when you notice the familiar sight of a girl with thick glasses and double layer of clothes.

You pick up your pace to catch up with the jogging girl. It doesn't take long though, with the pace that she's going.

You tap her in the shoulder. "Yo!"
The girl faces you, surprised, before realising who you are.

"Ah, it's Nii-san!"
"Morning. It feels like a while for some reason."

She shrugs her shoulders and grins. "It kind of is. Things have been so busy in school, nowadays..."
"Hmm? Maybe it's something this nii-san could help with."

She waves her hands, a bit flustered. "Ah, it's not anything like that, nii-san! I'm just airing grievances. See, our school's cultural festival is starting up soon."
"Ah, I gotcha."

You jog for a bit in silence. Cultural festival huh...if you're not mistaken, your school's own cultural festival is not until January. And speaking of schools...

"Where were you studying again, Murakami?"
"Eh? Have I never told you nii-san? St. Agace."

Geh. Hearing the name brings up some mixed feelings.

"Heh," Murakami giggles. "Maybe it's just cause you're so old that you've forgotten I told you!"
"No way, you never did. And I'm not that old, idiot!"

You give her a noogie, and she lets out a mixture of laughter and pleas for you to stop.

"Am I invited in that cultural festival of yours?"
She pauses.

"...It's an open festival, so I mean sure..."
The air has changed a bit.
"Murakami?"
"Nii-san, I-I think I won't be attending, though..."

"Why is that?"
"W-Well! You know, I'm like, not even into festivals and stuff. Aren't they like, real boring and exhausting? Hahaha..."

She scratches her head. You notice something.

"Give me your hand."
"What? Hey, nii-san, wait...!"

You open up her fingers, and just as you saw, they're wrapped in multiple bandages.
"You've been hard at work."
"..."
"So, why aren't you going to your cultural festival?"

She bites her lip, but in the end, she sighs out.
"Sorry I lied to you nii-san. I'm actually going to be there. I won't flake out on my classmates and friends, not after all the hard work they've done."
You suspect it never even crossed her mind, being the earnest girl that she is. So then...

"Why did you say you won't be there?"
"B-Because..."

She steps away from you a bit, and tugs on her messy pony-tail.
"Nii-san, I have a confession to make. I'm...not who you think I am."
"You're a guy?"
"Nii-san, I'm serious!" She seemed to relax a bit, but then returns back down.

"I'm... an ass-kisser like you. Maybe moreso than you, since I've never felt like you're a gomasuri even once. I like sucking up to other girls. Buying stuff from magazines they share with me, or watching shows that they like...I'm that kind of person."

She grabs her arm, hugging herself, and looks away.

"No, no, no one's calling me that like in your case, nii-san. I just...think it on my own. I have other things that I like too, but they're just not very trendy, or all that girly."

She sighs out. "I'm sorry, nii-san."
You shake your head.
"You don't have to apologize for anything. Look, how I see you won't change, alright? I promise. It's not changed right now, and it won't change when we see each other at the St. Agace cultural festival. Alright?"

You can't really read the expression behind those thick glasses of hers. But her smile is enough to tell you she's relieved.

"You're the best nii-san."
She bows her head, and when she raises it up, a smirk grows on her face once more.
"Is this what they call the wisdom of the elderly?"
"Alright, c'mere you...!"

"AHHHHHHH!!"

The screaming comes up once more. You speed up your pace.
It seems to be coming from inside an alleyway.
You look at each other, before running in.

You spot lilac hair on the ground.

"Ryou!"
You start running, expecting the worst...
But then she looks up upon hearing your voice.

"Yama--ow!"

You couldn't stop in time. You run into the class rep - who was not on the floor, but rather crouching down. You both trip on each other.
"Ow!""Ouch!"

You land on top of her, but you quickly get off.
"Ryou...! Are you hurt? Did something happen?! Class rep!"
You're shaking her, but then...

*SLAP!*

"...Huh?"
"Could you watch where you're going, you idiot!? I thought you were gonna crush me!"
"Wha..."
She's breathing heavily, and she looks disheveled from falling down, but other than that...
"You're alright?"
"Why won't I be?!"
"?! That's because I heard your screaming!"

Silence. It took a couple of seconds for Ryou to respond.
"...You heard that?"
"What do you mean? Of course I did. That's why I ran over, right?"
Again, another pause.
Her face grows redder and redder.

"Oh no. Ohnohnoohnoohno..."
She starts shrinking into a fetal position. Murakami took this time to enter into the scene.
"So...you guys know each other?"

"I can't believe you could hear me...I thought that if I shouted in an alleyway, no one would be able to hear..."

You've found a park bench where the three of you could sit. With you in the middle and Murakami to your right, you watch as the class rep nurses her bottle of green tea.

"What kind of logic is that? Not to mention," You look Ryou up and down. She's already in her uniform. "I know you like to go to school early, but isn't this too early, even for you?"

Ryou glances at her watch, and seems to be surprised as well upon looking at it.
"Huh...I guess I wasn't thinking straight."
"All morning? Did you get out of the bed wrong or something?"
"No it's not like that...my mind's just been..."

Hikaru looks at the ground, her cheeks tinged with blush.

You have a bad feeling about this.
You wait for her to go on.

"I've known this person for a long time...I never knew, er, that person looked at me in that way..."

Your suspicions are confirmed. For some reason, Tezuka Rei has went along with the plan you were talking about before.

Hikaru looks at you, her eyes showing full well the war going on inside of her head.
It seems to be asking a question from you too.

"Did you know...?"

"I...I think I have some idea who you're talking about."
Upon hearing that, she covers her face and slinks back into the bench.

"Nii-san, I'm sorry, but what's going on?"
Murakami whispers while observing the moping class rep.
"It seems that a friend of ours had asked her out."
"Ohh. She doesn't have feelings for that guy?"
"I'm afraid the problem is the 'guy' part..."

Murakami appears confused for a second, but then she comes to realize the problem too.
"Oh. That's..."
"Yamada-kun, what do I do?"

She removes her hands from her face, and is now staring at the sky.
"I don't swing that way. I mean, at least I think I don't. But if I agree, then our friendship...but if I don't, then... but isn't Eiji...?....But then..."

She's not even saying coherent sentences anymore. Tezuka, what in the world is she thinking...?

>Push Ryou to go out with her. If she's gone this far, then might as well help Rei.

"Well...won't you say a girl x girl problem needs a girl's perspective to be solved, Murakami?"
"Ehh..."

She seemed hesitant at first.
"Yes, please help me miss. I don't really have any other girl friends to ask. Hikaru Ryou by the way."
Murakami looks at you, but now she that Ryou has trapped her, there's nothing she could do.

"...Murakami Saya. Uh,why don't you tell me a couple of details first, Hikaru-san?"
"Well...the girl who asked me out is someone I knew back in middle school. We're close friends. She's the childhood friend of the guy that I...er, a close guy friend of mine, and I always thought she liked him."
"But it turns out she likes you?"

Ryou nods. Murakami ponders for a second.
"Are you sure," Murakami speaks slowly as to phrase her words correctly. "That she's not lying to you?"
A chill crawls up your spine.
"No...Rei-chan is not the type of girl that would lie. And there shouldn't be any reason to, either."

You stay quiet. Murakami scratches her head. "If you say so..."
She thinks for a bit.
"Well, I'm from St. Agace and there's a surprising amount of yuri going around on campus. I don't think it's all that bad to date girls."
"Hm?" A question pops in your head. "You dated a girl before?"
"I already told you. I'm not a dude, nii-san."
"Nah, but for real?"
Murakami thinks for a moment...
Before letting out a sigh as big as the class rep's. "To be honest, I haven't. I like boys, nii-san, what could I do?"

"So do I," Hikaru says. "I...like this boy. But...the boy I like is *that" childhood friend of her, so..."

Murakami seems to be overloading with this convoluted situation. You take note to apologize to her later.

"So if you go out with her, that's basically giving up on the guy you like...but if you don't, then you fear the two of you's relationship would be the one to suffer..."
"Essentially, yes."

Murakami crosses her arms and thinks. For a girl with such thick glasses, she really is taking her time.

"Well...it might seem a bit of a cop-out answer...but why don't you do a trial run for now? See how it feels like first. No commitment yet, just get to know each other better. What do you think, nii-san?"

>I agree

Shit, namecheck Hell Mountain if we feel it's necessary.
>>
Remember though if they do end up going this route, and sticking with it, that it leaves the Ojou and Kouhai as end results for Eiji. Idk what the fuck [True End] looks like, maybe it's Eiji actually developing a personality and becoming prime minister of japan? or maybe he just turns gay.

This too
Also do you guys think telling Hanazawa what's going on with the girls is good? Emphasizing absolute subtlety and to prevent the suicide from happening is a plus. If we're going to go up the mountain with the girl we love, at least have her be aware of this so we're positioned right when the time tomes, to influence class rep to NOT cliff-dive like a retard.

Thoughts?
>>
>>2845460
>>I disagree
>>
>>2845483
>it leaves the Ojou and Kouhai as end results for Eiji
Ojou needs to have her ego broken and learn how to be a better person first. Kouhai needs to get over being a fucking child and learn to be an adult without ruining everything.
>Eiji actually developing a personality and becoming prime minister of japan
And turning the show into a political intrigue and deception drama, followed by a Metal Gear Rising / Metal Wolf Chaos style badass politics genre-shift?
>or maybe he just turns gay
Yaoifags winning is the last thing anyone wants or needs. That's a hard NO.
>>
>>2845493
I don't mind sharing the problems we got with Hanazawa, the problem is she's a [Mob] character so it fundamentally limits what all she can do, also We don't know for sure if Class rep is actually gonna An Hero or not yet so we shouldn't state it like it's fact, lest we end up looking like a horrible person for thinking such of our friend.

That's the biggest tease of this whole quest is we never know anything 100% so we just have to go off assumption and alot of times it bites us in the ass.
>>
>>2845497
>Eiji becomes nano-machines son.

>>
>>2845460
You would have to have a good long talk with Tezuka after this. But for now...

"I agree with what Murakami's saying. It doesn't have to be a serious relationship from the get-go. You guys take it easy for now, see where it goes...unless you're completely against the idea, Ryou?"
"I-It's not that...I don't find Rei-chan cute or anything..."
"Then it should be fine, right?"

There should be enough time for Rei to do what she thinks would solve Ryou's problem. She might even do it before the trip to Hokkaido...
Right?

The class rep stays silent for a while, but your confident that whatever Tezuka's plan is will now be happening soon.

You're not wrong. And with how 'big bro' has been threatening us...I have some thoughts.

Firstly, unless this next post invalidates what I'm about to say, then-

I think that his hands are tied with us more than he's willing to admit. Why? Well, someone touched on it earlier- Mutually Assured Destruction. He's GOT to realize that if he fucks with anyone close to us or in our sphere of acknowledgement, we're going to BURN THIS FUCKER TO THE GROUND, whatever he wants be damned. He can't go for anyone we care for in particular, since that guarantees mission failure for both of us. Unless he's that nihilistic, but he doesn't strike me as the type.

And THEREIN lies out ticket out of his fucker. We need to become Ventinari. Everyone remotely important is connected to us in some way, and we're just important enough that shit breaks down without us to give a gentle push. We're actually already on that path, so we need to continue giving pushes and being people's secret patron. He'll fume, rant, and rave, but if he fucks with anyone, it won't just be a [BAD END], it'll be [WORST END]. We need to set things up so that we can bring things down crashing in a way that makes School Days look like a it had a reasonable ending.
>>
>>2845525
Huh. You're right. Interesting. I missed that entirely. Well played, BSG.

Doesn't stop the situation, though. We just need to be certain of safeguards.
>>
>>2845529
Well from what we know about the settings of the legend. People people tried to take the traveler from the demon and Ryou is much considered as a demon in the school if in these two weeks their relation becomes public Ryou might become more depressed and so become more attached to Tezuka increasing their relation together.

Then finnaly Ryou might snap and want to jump with Tezuka from the mountain and Tezuka will just follow to keep her friend safe. So yeah there might be a possibility. But i'm sure that it must be just unhealthy paranoia.

Or could be that he is just manipulating Rinko be it by her own will or something else.

You stay silent for a while.
Rinko-chan is asking for your help. You're still a bit confused as to what exactly happened...
But there are things you need to do first. You need to talk with Rei before Ryou gets to answer her.

"Rinko-chan, I will help you as soon as I can. I promise. Don't do anything rash, okay? I just need to finish something real quick, and then we could deal with this."
"B-But the text says--"
"It's a bluff," you say. "So you don't show up in two hours. What can they do, right?"

She seems to believe your words. She nods.
"Now wash your face and go to your class. We'll go to the arcade after school."

----

You rush towards the classroom. So far, the class is empty...

Apart from one person. Tezuka Rei is sitting on the table, as if knowing that you'll be looking for her.

Idk about this, it seems too controlling, I think we should just ask her to take it slow so both her and Ryou can get a handle on if it's what they want or not.

You walk up to Tezuka...
And flick her in the forehead.

"Ouch."
"That's for being reckless."

You step away again.
"So you know now huh, Yamada-kun...I'm sorry. But I still think this is the best way."
"That's why I pushed Ryou to say yes. Now, what's your plan?"

She seems surprised that you helped her. She nods in gratitude, and continues.
"I'm just going to try and grant her the things she wants to experience. Dates, or holding hands...but no complicated stuff. This is just a temporary thing. So that she'll realize it's not something to put to a pedestal, and something that's worth waiting for."
"What will you tell Nakamura-san?"
"Ei-kun? Nothing. This is just...an act of sorts. I did say earlier that I'll help you help her win, right? But you have to help me first."
You nod. And as if right on cue,

"G-G-G-Good morning!"

The door slides open and in comes the class rep.
Tezuka Rei has reverted back to her more sleepy, aloof version. Hikaru Ryou walks closer to where we were, blushing all over.
"Rei-chan...I-I...have an answer for you. It's--"

You hear noises from outside the door. Your [Mob] classmates. You immediately start to flee the scene, trying to avoid the gomasuri tag once more.
Ryou also straightens up.
"Later. After school. I want to talk to you sincerely."

Rei gives a shy smile and a nod.

Hikaru Ryou leads the homeroom, already back to her commanding class rep self. However, she keeps on glancing to the seat by the window on the back.
Nakamura Eiji still hasn't arrived yet.

"What I want you to do now is go to your groups and talk amongst yourselves on what you'll...do..."
The class rep's speech suddenly halts. You look up to see her staring at the door at the back, her lips a straight line.

You turn to see Nakamura Eiji by the doorway.

"Eiji..."
"Ei-kun..."

With the class grouped to their respective groups, Nakamura Eiji laughs to calm down the two immediate reactors, class rep and Rei.
"It's nothing guys. I just flew off my bike on the way to school."
"You...what?"
Ryou looks suspicious of him, and you agree. It looks more like his face was caved in than it does 'fell off of a bike'.

"Yeah, I was rushing to school on my bike since I woke up late, and this manhole cover was open, and the front tire just slotted itself inside and I went flying off! I didn't even see it, it all happened so fast!"
"You should have at least cleaned your face up..."
"Well, there was no time to treat the wounds. I was going to be late!"

Tezuka Rei stands up, and runs out the classroom. "First aid...first aid...!"
"Rei-chan!" The class rep stands up and gives chase to her. "The infirmary's this way!"

You and Eiji watch them, and when they've exited, he chuckles and returns back to you.
"It's just a couple of wounds. I just landed on my face really bad that's all. Hey, could you hand me a pen?"

You grab a pen and reach it out to Eiji. When he reaches out, you could see the straps of gauze wrapped around his forearm.
No time to wipe the blood from his face, yet enough time to treat the ones in his arms?

A sudden hunch falls over you. A pit in your stomach forms.

"Hey, Nakamura-san."
"Yeah?"
"Could you tell me what happened earlier again? And where it happened?"

"Uh, sure why not. So I was passing by the plaza this morning, in front of the arcade..."

(TO BE CONTINUED)

I'm gonna guess Kei called Fujimura to rough up Nakamura and that's why he's all beat up right now. Still I'll call this a win, if we had gone we'd have ended up looking like more of a Gomasuri for being around Eiji. Definitely dodged a bullet, or a bat, in this case.

By the time lunch came, you are called to meet behind the school by the class rep.
Hikaru Ryou paces up and down in front of you, deep in thought.

"Someone texted Rinko-chan with a threat ordering her to go to the arcade."
"A text?"
"Yes. And, the text said she could - or would - bring me along with her."

Ryou crosses her arms, brow furrowing.
"Why didn't you go, then?"
"They were asking to come within an hour. We would've been late, right?"
The class rep raises her brow at that statement, but knew she shouldn't argue that point.

"Rinko-chan's...never told me anything about this," said Ryou.
She seems to be deep in thought. But something's nagging on your head.

"Ryou, I have a question."

"Do you know anything about the arcade?"
She pauses for a second, but then in the end, she nods.

"Yes. That's Fumi's territory."
You have a suspicion that that's the case. Which means it was Nakahara Fumi that did that to Eiji.
"But it makes no sense," Ryou continues. "Why would she beat up Eiji? And why would she text Rinko-chan, of all the people?"
That's true. It seems that other than Ryou and yourself, she doesn't really interact with anyone from the main circle.

"Would you go to the arcade, Yamada-kun?"
You nod. "I promised Rinko-chan."
"Usually I'd suggest that you come prepared, especially when it involves that sukeban...but I have a feeling these circumstances aren't normal."

She puts her hands on her waist, coming to a conclusion.
"You and Rinko-chan should go there empty-handed as a sign of goodwill...I think."

We're probably gonna get our ass beat at the arcade just sayin. And not the pretend kind like last time, I think we're legit gonna feel some pain.
>>
>>2847420
>You're right, something's not right with all this
>>
>>2847420
"You're right, class rep. Something's not right with all this."
First, the target. It's one thing if it's you or Ryou who's the victim, but Rinko and Eiji seems too out of left field. Why them of all people?
Second, the bandages. What's the reason he has those? How could he bandage himself, but not clean up or treat his face wounds?
And third...you're quite sure that Eiji doesn't pass through the arcade.

"Class rep, do you have any idea why Nakamura-san would even be in that area in the first place?"
She nods. "Somewhat. He never passes there usually. Most people don't. But if Rei-chan was in school already, then that means he really is late. The road that passes through in front of the arcade is the fastest route to Koh."

So that answers that question. You feel, though, that Ryou wouldn't be able to answer the other two.
You'd have to find out for yourself.

"Good luck out there, Yamada-kun."

>cont'd

>>2847420

>You're right, something's not right with all this

Also, as a side note, we should start thinking of gathering allies from outside the school's alumni. If the beatings are going to spread to our friends, then it's time to one-up the bastards before things get out of hand.

I'd suggest, if things get dicey, to ask the Coach for advice, and maybe potential help among the school's faculty. He is the only teacher that vaguely cares for us.
>>
>>2847457
Classes have ended. You stand with Rinko outside the arcade, looking at the dilapidated sign above.
The place is dimly lit, and there are few people in and around the establishment. No, the whole block seemed empty even.

"Shall we, Rinko-chan?"
She looked terrified, and you could've sworn her knees were shaking, but she nods and marches in. You follow behind her.

Upon entering, a few students with altered uniforms stare at your direction. Their hairs are a mess, and scars litter their skin.
However, they have near to no recognizable features. [Mobs].

You walk into the middle of the room, where the cabinets are.
And in the middle, sitting on a bench and flanked by two tall delinquents, is queen sukeban herself.

"Tsk, tsk." Nakahara Fumi smirks, and leans forward on her baseball bat. "You should've just followed orders, Rinko-chan. Then none of this would have happened."

Not really a gang, but someone with a bit of sway in school matters. The entire faculty can't be crooked or biased against us; there must be a teacher or two out there willing to stick up for us. In my experience, these tend to be PE teachers, the school's administration staff, and sometimes the headmaster.

>>2847477

She is a belligerent nut, and sometimes the only way to make them see things your way is to talk to them in their language. We're probably getting a bat in the face regardless of what we say.
>>
>>2847484
Well the angle I'm tryin to go at here is to get some info off her before we get our shit kicked in, but you could be right in that acting tough might be our in instead of going it slow, the problem is, this is her territory, any threat we might have is totally eliminated by the fact we're totally outnumbered.

She stays silent. She glares at you, but for a few moments she doesn't say anything.

At last, she answers back in a whisper.
"...Why would you never take my side, Yamada?"
"..."
"What would it take for you to leave them behind? They set the dogs on you, they try to steal you away...but you still take their side. Never mine."
"Nakahara..."

That's why recruiting her into our cause is actually useful. But I'd rather have her and her delinquent goons act as deterrents, rather than having them actually beating up people. Having her on our side might as well dissuade the Collective from future fights.
>>

"No. There's nothing wrong with what you said. It's your methods. You don't want to be alone, but you're violent, you play truant, and you hold a hard grudge."
"Those are who I am, Yamada."
"Then that's what you will be for your whole life. Someone who's violent. Someone who's a delinquent. Someone who will always be alone."

A couple of seconds of silence fill the void. Then...
"AAAAAAAAAAGH!"

Suddenly, Nakahara screams and falls to her knees.
"GAAAAAAAAAAH!"

"Nakahara..."
"What is wrong with this world?! Why am I being punished for wanting justice?! I didn't even do anything this time! And yet I...And yet I..."

>I'm the only one alone.

The words that are not said ring through the building. Even Rinko looks up, surprised by the scene.

"...Yamada..." Nakahara says.
"Yes?"
"Tell me please. You want me to join you. But you've always been unfair since the beginning. But you always prioritised Hikaru Ryou. You always prioritised Nakamura Eiji. You even prioritised this girl. You put all of them above justice. How can I trust you when you put them above justice? Why?"

"But," you continue. "I am on your side too. I want all this to end. I want justice too. But revenge is not the way to do this. Trust me this once, Nakahara. Trust that I know what I'm doing, and help me."

Nakahara looks at you. Her eyes stare straight into your soul, as if trying to read the contents of your heart.
She then stands up, and dusts her knees.

"Shimei."
"Boss." The guy who was on Fumi's right before steps closer.
"Help the girl up. Take her to the backroom and give her whatever she wants. If you need money, take from the treasury."

You both enter through a side-door, which led to a couple of stairs. Upon climbing them, you reach the rooftop of the arcade. From here, you could see the rooves of the neighboring establishment, as well as the backside of the neon sign.

You continue walking until you reach the middle of the roof. From there, she turns around and crosses her arms.

"You tell me you know what you're doing. Yet you miss one giant detail."
"Which is?"

She shakes her head and sighs.
"These past few days the bullying of the gomasuri has lessened. The people from other classes are bothering you less and less. Why do you think is that?"

"Wait, you don't mean...?"
"She was asking you to find a person with say, right? An ace in the hole? *Are* you looking for one?"
"..."

She starts pacing in front of you.
"I can't help you in that one. I don't fuck with people up in the rungs of society. However, if you don't act soon, Kobayashi Mariko might just fall off favor with the collective."

I never thought of her as antagonist, she always was more of a rogue element but when I saw she had Bright red hair in the first few threads I was pretty sure she was part of the harem regardless.

As far as who's an actual antag I'm not sure, maybe the injustice of not being able to have a harem in modern society? In our case the main antags so far are the collective and Kei to some degree but he's been pretty back and forth so I don't think there is a definitive antag atm.

"You know how it is with those stuck-up girls. They value their pride above all else. If she told you what she's going through, it'd appear as if she's weak and complaining. That's way too much for a princess type like her."

"Then...then I have to look for that ace fast. Nakahara, do you have any ideas?"
"Hell no. Like I said, I don't like those kinds of people. They seem to all be a bit...worm-y. The best I could come up with is Hikaru Ryou, and she's about as higher class as a flea-ridden dog."

So you still have no leads for that person with say. Just where in the world would you find one...

"Oi. Stop furrowing your brow. You take things one step at a time and a soultion should come up."
"Oh yeah? How could you say that?"
"Cause that's how we roll. One step at a time."
"What, your gang?"
"Yeah. And we got here because we take things slow. One wrong step just means one step backwards."

"And that's why," she faces you again. "I'll apologize to Nakamura and the little girl downstairs. You get your ass home."
You nod, but when you turn around and leave, you hear her stomp towards you.

"Geez, man! Get your head on straight Yamada!"
She reaches out to your uniform and fixes the cuffs of your uniform.

"You're gonna go home looking like that? Have some dignity."
She fixes the collar that went inside out when she grabbed, it, and straightened your tie...

And then she leans her head on your chest.
"Oi, Nakah--"
"Fumi."
"What?"
"Fumi. We're brothers now, right?"
"...What?"
"If you want to be allies, then we need to have a pact. We need to be brothers."
"...Ok. Fumi."
"Good. Now pat my head."
"...Are you high?"
"I'm serious. I need a physical pact. If you want to be serious allies then take our rituals seriously."
"Those guys down their pat your head too?"

Speaking of hell, you know who seems kind of lonely? The [devil].
I know that our interactions with him have generally put him in a negative light, and to be honest it seems like he might be here to fuck us over. But when I look at how he acts and what he's told us about himself and his role, I can't help but think he must be pretty lonely. Burdened with knowledge. He knows how things will go, he knows just about everything he needs to know about everyone and what they do thanks to his status as the meta character. That seems like something that would make it hard to truly connect with someone. If someone tries to become your friend, you know that it's simply because it was their role, their purpose, to do so.
I wonder if we'll have to secure his [happiness] as well, in the end.
>>
>>2848046
I think the way for us to do that is to let us actually be his bro and to stop being a cryptic asshole towards us. He just needs to contain his metaknowledge-induced autism, or NOT be an edgelord
>>
>>2848046
I would assume so since he falls between secondary and main characters with his role, at least according to the pastebin, but from what I understand is getting the [True End] is what will bring him happiness anyway. Though his recent behavior puts that into question.
>>
>>2848054
I mean assuming what he said about the main guy having a meta friend and a fifth girl on his harem. Maybe he does hold some grudge toward us, since it was our existence that pushed him away from his friends making him dependent on us.

There is a reason why we are the older brother and he is the young one.
>>
I must say we are on the way in eclipsing Eiji as the harem protagonist. Maybe this is what our brother is talking about.

Saturday morning. Your mother has already left for work, while your father is probably off somewhere on another part-time job. Just as you were about to dig into the breakfast your father prepared, though, you get a text message. It's from the head chef. He's asking you to come in this morning.

You arrive within an hour.
"Sir, you were asking for me?"
"Hm? Ah, Yamada. Step in to my office."

The head chef pushes you into a room slightly smaller than the freezers of your restaurant. Though the insides' furnished, with lamps and even a big wooden table in the center, the place still looks menacing. Definitely the office of the head chef.
You wonder, though, why he called for you inside. You don't recall doing anything wrong the past few times you came to work.

The head chef goes to behind the table and pulls open a cabinet. When he returns, he reaches out to you the object he grabbed: an evelope.

"Take it, Yamada. It's your salary."
"Eh? Oh, thank you..."

You take the envelope with a bow. It's of a decent thickness.

"Er, so when you called earlier...?"
"Yeah, it's for that. You're the last guy who hasn't gotten the paycheck yet."

You bow down once more in thanks.
"So...do you need me to...?"
"Ha? Was it your schedule today?"
"No, sir."
"Then see you when it is."

You leave the family resto with a pocketful of cash. You feel that ever so slight sense of satisfaction in receiving the fruits of your labor.

"What should I do first, I wonder..."

"Alright!"
With your envelope safely tucked away, you head into the plaza to look for something to buy.

Yumegawa's establishments is centered around the train station, which is also a multi-storied mall. As you walk down the place, you notice cafes, bowling alleys, toy shops, antique shops...the whole place is filled with excellent date settings. As expected from a harem romcom world.

You try to think of something that reminds you of Hanazawa.
"...Oh, right...!"
You always see her wearing a scrunchie either on her wrist or to tie up her ponytail. Maybe you should buy her one?

You head out to walk and find a fashion accessory store. Luckily you find one just nearby.

Inside the store, you are met with the strong smell of female perfume. A bunch of girls are inside, trying out different shirts and skirts of wonderful colors. In a table in the middle, a pile of discounted nail polishes and lipstick are stacked high. The woman in the cashier starts to narrow her eyes upon seeing you, so you head to where the scrunchies are.

You see a rack of scrunchies of different colors by the corner of the store. Lucky, they come in packs of 8.

You pick up some that you feel Hanazawa will like. White, Black, Pink, and at the last second, you grab a red one.

But just when you were about to stand up, and evaluate them all properly...

Hairs stick up in the back of your neck.

You feel like your being watched.

You try to look for a mirror, and see one on the back of the store.
You scan it...

But don't see anyone you know in particular. Just a couple of [Mob] girls doing their shopping.
"...Must be imagining things."

However, just as you were about to look away...
You spot an odd person.

You have no idea what's happening, but she's definitely eyeing you up. Whether it's because of what you're shopping for, where you currently are, or even some sort of secret agenda, you're not sure at this point.

You drop the scrunchies back to the rack, and head out of the shop.
"Thank you for shopping."

There should be more fashion accessory shops anyway. You walk down the street as per normal...
And occasionally you'd look at a window, or glance back casually.
And on more than one occassion...

You see the same girl from the shop try to dodge from your line of sight, though doing a pretty poor job at it.
You walk in a loop, and still, the same girl is following you.

Now, how should you go about this...

Whatever it is that she's up to, you're quite sure that what she's doing is illegal. Even if it is in broad daylight, and the genders are not necessarily the norm.
You go around the place, looking for signs that might lead to the cops. You start to leave the busy street and end up in a more quiet part of town.

"Ah, there we go..."
Just a block from the park, you find a road that leads straight to a police station. You take a step towards it.

"...!"
You hear a gasp, followed by patter of hurrying footsteps.

You turn around to see the girl running towards you.
She stops a couple of feet away, trying to catch her breath. You now get a better look at her.

The girl is a [Mob] character, who looks to be about college age. But though she is a [Mob], you cannot deny that she is a looker, the type that would easily be scouted by agencies or magazines. Even if her hair is dyed brown, it blends in so well with her looks that she makes it look natural.

The girl's catching her breath. But though your gazes crossed...

"Uh, sure why not."

The girl smiles and bows her head.

"But I do have a question. Why did you have to follow me all the way out here?"

She looks at you with a blank stare, for 1 second, 2, 3...
"A-Ah..."
It seems only now that it clicked in her head.
She frantically scribbles in her notepad once more, but you decide to stop her. You garner that it probably never crossed her mind til you pointed it out.

----

You seat on a bench nearby, while the girl sketches once more on her pad.

>Now, you were buying scrunchies, right? How many did your girlfriend ask you to buy?

"She didn't really ask me to buy anything?"
She looks at you, confused.
"I was looking for a surprise gift for her. She seems to like scrunchies, so I figured--"
You are cut off by her raising the board.

>So, that's what you think about! The things you notice about her, or the memories that you share...something that's close to both of your hearts.

"So, if that's the case then what would you suggest I get?"
She thinks for a second, and then comes up with an idea.

>Come with me!

----

For some reason, ever since you returned back to the city center, she stopped using the notepad altogether. From her more aloof nature to when you were talking earlier on the bench, she suddenly turned graceful and serene. A cool beauty.
She was tall for a girl - nearly the same as your height - and her long legs grabbed the attention of most of the males in the vicinity. Whenever she tucks a loose hair from her ear, it feels like two or three heads turn to your direction.

You stop by a couple of shops, ranging from antique shops to clothing stores. She would reach to you a couple of items that all matched the theme of spring. A pink picture frame, a sweater for the cool weather...though none seem to sit well with her.

She's also resorted to using only gestures to communicate, only broken sometimes by the occasional whisper of "Try this one." She would shake her head, or give a thumbs up, but she wouldn't speak. Her lips only maintained that demure smile.

It wasn't until you reached a jewelry shop that something really caught her attention.

"Waaah...!"

It seems something finally caught her attention. It was a sakura flower shaped into a pendant, with silver petals and a pearl embedded into the middle of it. The girl was starry-eyed in inspecting the necklace...

Until her gaze fell to the price-tag. All of a sudden she looked down-fallen.

"What's wrong?"

She shows the pendant to you. It costs about half your paycheck.

"It's way too expensive. Not to mention, a bit flashy."
She seems eager to protest. However you can't move on this point.
"I can't buy anything that will draw too much attention. Our relationship is kind of a secret right now."

You look at her, and it seems that she wants for you to continue.

"Well...it's kind of a complicated situation right now, and I'm in the middle of all of it. We're keeping it low because I don't want to get her involved. I'm afraid, if I get her this, and someone asks who she got it from..."

After hearing what you have to say, it feels like your companion became a bit somber. You try to laugh it off.
"I didn't mean to put a damper on things."

She shakes her head, and returns the necklace to the attendant.
She puts a hand on your shoulder, and gives you a reassuring smile. It's as if she's trying to say, "It'll be alright."
Before you could thank her though, she raises up a finger and leaves you once again.

When she comes back, in her hand is a silver bangle, with brass etchings of sakura flowers on it's face.
She smiles, and mouths the words 'more subtle.'

Also costs a third cheaper.

This newest interlude doesn't sit right with me. New girl introduced out of the blue? Dyed hair? Older than us? It all reeks of interference. *Producer* Interference.

I fear there's been a regime change in meatspace. I fear that a fair chunk of the anime's original production and writing staff have been replaced--that this new regime has taken it upon itself to change up this story to an unrecognizable degree, nonetheless in our favor. I fear that some character poll put into some highly lauded shoujo anime mag or website poll has had Yamada rank above the main character (and probably a couple of the girls), and that the movers and shakers (i.e. THE EXECUTIVE BOARD) at the studio have Taken Notice. They've given us more characters to interact with and more time to interact with those characters.

Fellas, I think we've turned from a supporting character into a cotagonist in the short time that this (what I think to be second) season has been unfurling.

It was nighttime when you get home, and meeting you by the front door is your father.
"Evening, Ken-chan. Welcome home."
"Evening..."
"Where are you going?"

Before you could walk past him, he puts a hand in your shoulder.

"We're training early today."

"Dragon-stretches-tail!"

You do the move shouted by your father. You thrust your right hand forward and extend your left hand back, and take a wide, stable stance.

"Boulder-flows-through-water!"
A dodge move taught by your father. You tuck your hand inside your body, and spin, using your shoulders to divert the could be multiple attackers.

"Hand-pierces-fire!"
You thrust your hand forward, fingers pointing out like a knife.
"Hyah!"
"Strengthen your elbows! Use your waist!"

Tonight, your dad has been drilling you especially hard. You're dripping with sweat, but you continue the techniques your father has taught you.

"Enough!"
You return back to your original stance, and bow down to your sifu.
"I would have preferred to train you more, but I'm afraid there isn't enough time..."

Well, you're already here so might as well look for the shop.
"It should just be around here somewhere..."

Your dad also provided a map, but it looks more like a drawing of a five year-old than an actual reference for directions. You sigh, and pocket the piece of paper. Maybe it's best to just ask someone.

You try to look fora person you could ask for directions, until your gaze crossed with someone.

"Ah."
"Ah."

You jog towards her.
"Morning."
"Morning. You're up early for a Sunday morning, kobun."

You nod. "I've been sent on a, er, special mission."
You present the coupon to her. "My dad has a part-time job, so he sent me to go to this place...would you happen to know where this grocery is?"
She reads the pamphlet with an intense gaze.
"Fumi?"
"Well, well, well..."

She smiles, while raising her right hand. In it is a reusable shopping bag.
"How the tables have turned, my dear kobun..."

You think for a second.
"Most yen saved?"
"Ha! Your funeral, city shit."

She grins and reaches out her hand. You shake it.
It has begun

----

Though the competition has technically started, you find yourself walking casually with Nakahara Fumi towards the shops.
On her hand she has managed to extract your shopping list from you, and is now grooming through the items.

"Whoever's written this is wise. I could already see all the meals planned out for the week...fish, consomme, salad, and hamburg steak...mhm, I see..."

She's so focused on the list that she isn't even talking to you anymore.

"Ah, but this," She pulls out a pen from her pocket and starts scratching off some items.
"I know a better place where you could get this...and this too..."

"I need to budget for nine people, so you really have to know how to stretch the yen."
"Ah..."

It takes you a moment to realize what she just said.
"Wait, nine people?!"
"Geez, you're so noisy! Its seven in the morning, can you not shout? Is it that surprising?"
"Why nine people?"
"Well, there's mom, dad, and my seven siblings..."

You almost can't believe it. Eight children? In Japan?
"And you do the grocery for all of you?"
"Yeah. I mean, who else would? My nursing mother?"

It feels like you just saw a whole new side of Fumi. "You know I would say that you'd make a good housewife, but..."
She sighs and brushes away her hair. "In a way, I already am."

She listens intently, and when you stopped, she crosses her arms and thinks.
"Well...if my little brother is kind of going through that recently. He's in the rebellious phase of his life you see."

You stop yourself from saying 'look who's talking', and let Fumi continue.

"Well, usually a good meal is enough for him to calm down. Maybe try that?"

You chuckle imagining Kei settling down after you cook a meal for him. "I'll look into that."

You continue to follow her, who seems to be going down narrower and narrower streets. How obscure is this shop...?

"So, you cook for all of them?"
"What, my family? Yeah I have to. Can't really ask anyone else to...the other girls are still too young."
"I see..."

She smirks, and turns to you with an arrogant air.

It wasn't until a few seconds of running that you understood what caught her offguard.

A huge amount of noise is emanating from one of the side-streets. That must be the grocery!

You turn the corner, and indeed, the place is jam-packed with middle-aged women all trying to get the insane discounts.

"Top priority is the hamburg steak, kobun! At 75% those will be gone fast!"

You nod. Fumi and you separate as you get nearer to the store.
The time for conversation has ended. Time for the games to begin!

You remember the training your father has taught you the night before. You tuck in your arms...

And using your shoulders, you roll through the crowd as a boulder flows through water.
"Oi!"
"He's getting ahead!"

You continue, ignoring the grasps on your body trying to pull you back. You push through the initial wall, until you get to the freezer.

There, a bigger, more tightly-packed wall of people is separating you from the heavily discounted hamburg steak. There's no place to flow through here.

But maybe if you pierce through this wall...

With a precise strike, a divide opens up, allowing you to penetrate into the freezer...!

You grab as much as you can in your hand, pull out, and then grab more hamburg steaks. You don't even take the time to count them. All you focused on was performing Hand-pierces-fire perfectly, and grabbing as much as you can.

But soon, your hand cannot feel for any more hamburg steaks.
It's time to pull ba--

"Hey! Get off me! That's my lettuce, you piece of shit!"

You hear the shouts of Nakahara Fumi from a not so far distance. You glance at the direction of the voice, you see that blood red dye among the sea of plain [Mob] hair.

"Fumi! Grab my hand!"

You catch the attention of Nakahara, who upon seeing you, finds your extended hand easily.
Once you feel her palm around yours, you pull Fumi closer, using your other hand to help bring her through the flood of people.

"...Got you!"
You bring her close enough to where you're standing, trying to balance not losing her back to the people, and maintaining your grip on the hamburg steaks you've grabbed.

"I think we should bail now...there's nothing much we could do, it's too late."
"..."
"Oi, Fumi, are you okay?"
You look her up and down, and start to worry.

"...What do you mean?"
"It ain't over til the day is over. We still need to determine who saves the most yen right? You're gonna give up after one store?"

She takes a second, but in the end she gets it and gives a fierce smile.
"As expected from my kobun. Unrelenting."

You smile and walk ahead of her.

It shouldn't be hard, right?
When you go on a date, you wear an outfit that a guy would like. Boys are all the same anyway: something that shows the legs maybe, or your shoulders. Guys can be idiots like that.

But how do you dress up when it's a girl that you're going on a date with?

I lay out the clothes I have in front of me.

A white summer dress. Very cute and girly.
A tan blouse. Simple, but chic and feminine.
And a t-shirt and jeans. Not cute at all, but casual. Maybe that should be the look I'm going for.

I sigh out and stare at the choices in front of me.

"What would Rei-chan like, I wonder..."

I guess I'd go with the blouse then.

"Ooh."

I fix my hair and pose for the mirror. It has a nice casual feel to it, but it still has a lot of femininity charm points.
"Not bad, not bad." I couldn't help the grin forming. "I bet Rei-chan will--"

And just like that, after I remember who is it I'm going out with...
I crash into the bed, in the middle of the other clothes.

I...never knew that Rei-chan swung that way. I always felt that she liked Eiji just because of how long they've been together. I mean, yeah, we've also been together since middle school, but...

Me? As in, ME?! I just don't see it. I can't.

I wipe the hair away from my eyes and stare at the flourescent light.

----

By the time I arrive at the plaza, I could already see Rei-chan from a mile away. She's wearing a cute white top with a ribbon, and short shorts held up by jumpers.
She's resting under the clock of the plaza, waiting while looking down on the floor.

I run to where she is. The first thing I did when I got near her is bow my head.
"I'm so sorry! I overslept this morning, and...well..."
I can't really find the right words. How did I talk to Rei-chan before again?

Rei just smiles that ever so innocent, cute grin.
"It's no problem, Ryou-chan! I just got here too!"
I doubt it, but if Rei-chan says so, then...

Looking around the plaza, there are a lot of people meeting up with friends and lovers. They're either waiting on the bench, under the tree, or even just pacing back and forth on the pavement. This seems like a popular place. I've never really been here to meet with someone before.

Rei then lets go of my hands, and flashes me a thousand watt smile. "Ryou-chan deserves to be loved. And that's why, even just for today, could you forget about Ei-kun?"

That's right. What am I thinking? Today should be a date between me and Rei. I shouldn't be thinking about Eiji all this time. It would be unfair for her.
