/qst/ - Quests

We're back.

Old Thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/2810674/

Current Location Information (Big info dump): A small shack atop a hill that borders Pallars, the town that Old Buck, your tutor and carer, depends on. The lands are controlled by Lord Clayton Byrch of Byrch Hall, whose wooden keep towers over the small village in the other hill at the northern end of the village. Clayton Byrch is a bannerman of Renfred Rykker, lord of Duskendale after the Darklyns were massacred by King Aerys II for taking him prisoner during the Defiance of Duskendale.

Recap:

You're a young girl who woke up in the middle of a grassfield suffering from a terrible headache. A kind of old man has taken you in and explained to you the ways of the world. You've spent every day to his side for nearly a full year, reaching your twelfth nameday. He eventually told you about his past. He was a hedge knight who earned his knighthood in the war of the Ninepenny Kings, but left his home in order to avoid plunging his family into courtly intrigues. Nevertheless, in his stay in the lands of Byrch Hall, Old Buck's wife left for the heavens and his sons left to find work in Duskendale over ten years ago. In order to avoid getting you into trouble, you've remained hidden from the world at large and only know Old Buck, his dog Young Buck, and his chickens and mule.

Though you woke up as a young girl with a beautiful summer dress, well cared silver hair and beautiful pale skin, right now you look like more of a boy. Wearing roughspun tunics and breeches offered to you by the old man. Your silvery hair is rough and uncared for, and has grown long, losing its shine and brightness to adopt a greyed out white which could still look quite peculiar to the regular village folk. Your once frail body has become lean and strong with tiny scars from your exercise. The old man has sworn to teach you how to fight, even if reluctant to do so. Your purple eyes still shine brightly, but Buck has mentioned that the colors seem more bluish without the bright silver hair you possessed.

----

One day, you were atop a tree late in the evening, observing the soft light emanating from the torches in Pallars' calm streets. Suddenly, you heard movement, a boy appeared out of nowhere and you were not able to react in time. You are stuck in a tree as he stares at you, scared as can be.

"Who- Who the fok are you?" He asks, his voice cracking multiple times.

Your mind ticks for a moment. 'I am the blood of old Valyria.' is what you'd like to say. You don't know why, maybe it's just because you're a Valyrian as Buck told you. You control yourself though, this is the first person you've seen since you're here.

---

You put on your best spooky voice, low and gruff, and say "I am a child of the forest, leave now or face my curse!" You hide your head behind the tree's branches and trunk, trying your hardest to make it scary.

It works. The child lets out a bloodcurling scream of terror. He runs away, back into the group of trees that leads into the village. You can hear his ragged and heavy breathing for a while, along with the sound of branches breaking and foliage moving. When all goes silent, you spot him returning to the village and heading to a certain house, trying to catch some elders' attention.

You show a devious smile as you see him screaming for help. Eventually, a middle-aged peasant comes out of his shack to reprimand him and bring him into the house. You carefully tread down the tree and head home.

Old Buck, as always, is sitting by a small fire, preparing a bit of chicken. One of the animals died of old age. Meat's not as good when they're old, but it's better than no meat. Or so Buck tells you.

You sit by the campfire with him, petting Young Buck while he recounts his times as warden of Pallars. He struck many thieves with wooden sticks and punished them for their errors, back when Lord Clayton was a babe and his regent and uncle, ser Guncer, ruled in his stead. Your heart is still racing at the thought of the boys' eyes meeting yours. It was the first time you stared at someone that wasn't Old Buck, sweet Young Buck, or the old man's animals.

A bit of an explanation might be in order:

>All tests are based on the attributes mentioned (Athletics, Will, Endurance, etc.)
>Succesfully passing tests means that you get better with those attributes. Moreso when you're a child, as you're in learning age.
>Failing tests has consequences apart from what you'd expect from the situation, such as attribute reduction, but these reductions are minimal when you're a child and get progressively worse as you age. When you're an old woman, failing skill tests might result in lowering a certain attribute.
>Along with attributes, you can specialize in certain skills that pertain to them. Though this is usually learned at a later age, when you're reaching adulthood.

>Everything is a test. Keeping true to your friends and being an honest person even when it does you harm (psychological, social, physical, etc) is as much of a test as swinging a sword to defeat your enemies.
There's lots of things that your character feels that you don't. Considering she's an 11 year old girl and is actually going through these events with all the consequences pertaining to them. I wanted to simulate it that way. Hope it works well.

Anyway, do me a will test, 3d6, best of three, DC 9

You bring up your resolve. You know Old Buck won't like it that you spend hours in the evening staring at Pallars, but you don't want to lie to him or keep your mouth shut. You're friends, he'll understand.

"Buck, I was sitting up on a tree by your fields. I saw a boy my age there." You say as he eats a piece of meat.

He chews for a bit, then swallows, looking at the roasting chicken above the fire. Then he looks at you and smiles as he shrugs off the grease on his short beard and moustache. "And what happened?" he asks in a warm tone.

You can't help but feel surprised, Buck had always been so adamant about you not leaving the house. You take your arms around your legs and hug them, it makes you feel more secure. "I pretended I was a child of the forest, like the ones in the God's Eye you told me about. And he ran away really fast."

Buck breaks out into a hearty laugh, you'd think it would be a roaring one if he were younger. "You're as clever as a snake, Rhae." he says inbetween chuckles. "Might be because dragons and snakes both have scales. They are distant cousins, the both of them, or so a Maester once told me." He points the bone of the old chicken towards you as he says that. "Might be you're Rhae Greysnake instead of Rhaenyra Silverdrake."

You smile, Rhae Greysnake. If all that Buck told you is true, most women in the Seven Kingdoms would be real mad at a name like that. To you, it's warming, moreso than Rhaenyra Silverrr-... Whatever Buck said. It's a name you've earned, instead of one you're given.

The evening passes by with some cheers and laughs. The chicken's meat was tough and somewhat dry, but it warmed your belly as well as it could.

A week passes by uneventfully, but at the end of it, during a sunny morning with blue skies, a bunch of footsteps and talking can be heard coming up from the path leading to Pallars. Buck tells you to get into the house and you promptly do so. Sitting at the stool upon which you always sit when visitors come by.

Outside, you start hearing some voices, but they aren't young Erryk and Melara. They're all men, and there's at least three different ones. You wonder who these people are, did you do something bad that other day? You do want to listen in on what they're saying.

You've been doing the same thing for months, every time black-haired Erryk and his wife come to visit, you sneak out to the window and listen in on their conversation. Buck's none the wiser to your antics, not that it's that bad to just listen in on a conversation like that. It's good to hear other people's voices.

After some more excuses for your rude behaviour, you set out, concentrated, softly moving your feet forward and avoiding any and all creaks in the house, you stop as you hear the voices silence themselves. It sounds awkward, you think you've been heard. Then they resume their conversation, you reach the window and sit under it.

"You know nothing of it, you say, ser?" an old man's voice says.

"I swear on it, ser Guncer. Why wouldn't I tell you straight away?" You recognize Buck speaking. He seems to be pleading to that Guncer.

A young man's voice is then raised. "Ser. Remind yourself that honesty is a virtue. That child was terrorized, he's struggling to even go tend the fields with his parents. He must've seen something."

With Buck's tone, you can tell that he gave the young man a long shrug. "Might be he's seen an animal." He says.

Guncer replies. "An animal that speaks? I've known you for at least twenty years, ser Harlan. You're lying."

Buck's voice seems to become worried. It's just the same as when you catch him lying to you. "Ser Guncer, I respect House Byrch, never would I tell a lie."

Guncer replicates in a commanding tone. "Then prove it, we'll search your shack. If you hide nothing, we'll leave you in peace. If we find something, you'll answer to me."

You then hear a man being shoved, Buck. He pleads with them, saying that he hides nothing and feels betrayed.

Oh. Oh no. They're coming.

Your heart skips a beat as you think of a plan to leave without being seen. Carefully, you wade towards the back of the house. Your heart's thumping at speeds you'd never seen before. It doesn't feel good, but you must get out of here so Buck can be left alone.

As you reach the door, you hear a loud thump behind you, the front door didn't give in on that first push. Nevertheless, your mind races, and like a spooked hare, you leg it out the back, opening the door in a rush.

You hear a voice coming from behind the shed. "Did you fuckin' lie to me, Harlan?". It's Guncer's voice. No one replies.

A second thump, and Guncer's inside the shack, from his footsteps you can tell he's searching around. His footsteps are not the only ones you hear, dirt is being shoved around from the right, coming around the side.

You see Young Buck and he seems unsettled, looking at the doorframe, the dog starts barking ferociously while the chickens fly around their pen, terrified by the noise of it.

13 and 14. Both passed.

You untie Young Buck in a hurry while thinking of the next part of your plan. Running. When you untie it, you pat him on the back, at which point he sits shoddily, leaving his ass halfway up, the animal's really nervous and whimpers and barks constantly. If you could voice some commands at him, you're sure Young Buck would listen and calm down. There is no time.

The footsteps come ever closer. The man coming around seems to have gotten distracted and stopped halfway, but Guncer does not balk and heads for the backdoor after a quick check inside.

You sprint, as quietly as you can, you know this area well, just yesterday you've been tearing off bad plants and putting bothersome branches away. Each one of your footsteps melts with the cacophony of Young Buck barking, the chickens flapping their wings and even the mule whinnying.

You reach the treeline and hide between bushes and trees. Watching from afar as Guncer comes out of the shack and Young Buck snaps at him from his sitting position. Guncer throws the back of his hand, clad in a leather gauntlet, towards Young Buck, who recieves the hit and whimpers before resuming his bark and attempting a bite again.

Guncer curses at the animal and then proceeds to sweep around your house. You watch as he opens the chicken's pen, some of them fleeing it. He curses again as his mail and sword scabbard get stuck at various spots in the pen.

The man coming around finally reaches Guncer. You see a very young man with some weight on him, but still strong and clad in decent mail with the Byrch coat of arms on his tabbard. He wields a strange weapon, it looks like a bow, but he holds like a lance, with a hand on some sort of trigger.

The young man adresses Guncer. "Uncle, you should calm down. Can't you see that it was the dog?"

Guncer glares at him. "It's Ser Guncer, Balman. I thought your elder brother taught you manners."

Balman, probably Balman Byrch, lord Clayton's younger brother of around 17 namedays. He also has a sword in a scabbard. He winces as his uncle speaks to him in that dark tone. This Guncer must be Guncer Byrch, Clayton and Balman's uncle, he was young back when Old Buck came to Pallars.

OId Buck comes out of the shack's backdoor. "I told you, Ser Guncer. There's no one here. Can't you see why I didn't want you coming in? Dog's got a real nasty bite and I didn't want you getting hurt, Ser."

Guncer looks around him, still searching for something suspicious. "Don't fuck with me, ser Harlan. You got a dog that snaps at others yet it can open doors?"

"It's a guard dog, ser." Old Buck replies while shutting up Young Buck.

As you hide, you hear branches and bushes parting to your right. Someone's coming from there. You look, and see what you suppose is Guncer's third man moving along the treeline. He doesn't have the Byrch arms on him, rather wearing a few pieces of leather armor and holding a knife in his hand, he seems older than Balman, but not older than Guncer. The man, of a shaggy golden hair, hasn't spotted you yet, he's close and coming closer as he inspects the woods. Sneaking away wouldn't be too hard, but that would mean losing sight of your shack.

'Seven hells.' is what you think of. Old Buck said it a few times when he got angry, though he said you shouldn't say it, you still thought the words packed a punch. No time for daydreaming. You must make a decision.

Best of three actually. Was waiting for the third roll. I'm trying to decide which of the two is most fun, best of two or best of three.

>>2861733
I did best of two in the first thread.

12 on the roll for will, and 14 for sneaking.

That man of shaggy blonde hair doesn't look too right. As far as you know, he hasn't said a word since he arrived, only gave a short greeting to Old Buck. Something doesn't tick about his looks either.

Noticing that the man is approaching you and the ruccus from your home is dying down, you realize that the three men are going to sweep the area. Though you worry for Old and Young Buck, you have to head deeper into the forest to avoid being found.

You slowly trudge backwards, making sure not to hit anything loud on the ground, slowly passing by bushes, circumventing trees. When you reach a certain length, you turn around and look infront of you, moving annoying shrub branches out of the way. This forest doesn't really have beaten paths in them, which hampers your speed greatly.

When you've gotten to a good distance from the shack. You realize that you're close to the field of grass where you woke up. That was already a year ago, yet you still don't know why you were there. All you remember is a foggy dream. The man of the silver hair drinking a crimson liquid, which flowed more like goo. Was he your father? Someone you knew?

You approach the field where you once woke up. It's strange how only grass flows in that patch of land. Buck told you that it's always been that way. Apparently a Weirwood tree was torn out by the invading andals, and other trees and plants refused to grow there from there on. Or so Old Lewys, the mayor of Pallars, told him. You don't really doubt it, Old Buck told you that the Weirwood trees aren't just white trees with carved faces, they're magical entities carved by the Children of the Forest. If there were dragons flying and breathing fire, why wouldn't some trees be magic stuff too?

As you head to exit the tree line, you trip on something and fall down. Owie, this fall scraped your knee a bit, it's gonna bleed at least a little. You realize something strange. You stepped on a branch, yet it didn't break, it was too slender of a thing to not break. You look down and see... A hilt?

Buck's shown you the hilt of a sword before, but he told you that you'd never hold one until you had practiced with him. It was a hilt from an old sword of his that fell to rust long ago. But this hilt seems thinner, and the pommel is also quite elaborate, bearing a figure of the sun with curvy rays coming out of it, its paint worn off.

You look to the rest of the sword, it's dug into the ground, some plants even grow on top of it, with plants curving around the hilt.

Inquisitively, you give the sword a tug upwards. It won't budge. You give it a good pull, putting all your strength into it. It still won't budge. You clear the plants holding onto it. Still nothing.

You crouch besides it and wonder why no one has bothered to dig this sword out of the ground. Not like it's hidden or anything. Why hasn't Buck shown it to you before? You caress the pommel gently, removing the dust from it. You see something on the pommel, letters, you think, but Buck didn't teach you how to read letters. He doesn't know how to himself, even if he proudly says that he can read each letter of 'Pallars'.

You give them a good look, but you don't even know where a letter ends and when one begins. This isn't like the usual letters that Buck's shown you from the Common Tongue. And they're also written real tiny on the pommel.

>Leave the sword alone. You have to return to Old Buck now that some time has passed. Surely he'll help you dig this sword out.

You decide to look around for some sort of clue as to why this particular sword is buried in this place. Try as you may, you don't notice anything out of the ordinary. The ground around it is firm and brimming with plants, so it was buried long ago. What you don't understand still is why no one bothered to dig it up.

You spend a while longer toying around with the hilt. The letters make no sense, but you can tell that the pommel was once yellow. The hilt fits relatively well in your hand, considering how young you are. And from the size of the hilt, it's longer than the shortsword that Buck showed you. You decide to dig on the ground around it and see a likely reason why no one dug it up. The ground there is hard as stone, you can barely scrape off the dust off the area. The plants trunks break themselves as their roots are dug into this hard dirt.

You stare at it confused, but your pondering is cut short by the sound of footsteps from the dirt path. You hide behind a tree, taking a peek from it. At the path, you can see Guncer and Balman Byrch, and their blonde thug trailing behind them. Guncer leads the walk and stops in front of the grassfield. He turns around and says something to the blonde man. Balman intervenes in the conversation. After a short talk, Guncer and the blonde man leave while Balman heads back towards your shack.

Seeing Guncer and his rogue heading back to the village, you're sure that they will discuss something interesting either for you or at least for Old Buck. You decide to follow them while hiding in the forest. You make sure to hide your presence as well as possible, but you have to wade around obstacles that could make noise, sometimes you have to get farther away from the pair in order to reach some tall vegetation, so you can only get parts of the conversation.

"You know what to do?" Ser Guncer asks the shaggy haired man.

The man nods. "Sure do." He says.

"Balman won't move his ass from there for a while. So prepare carefully. If someone else shows up, do whatever you think is best." Guncer says.

"I hope you remember our deal. This won't be for free." the rogue says.

Guncer grunts and glares at him. "Considering I'm giving you the job half done, you shouldn't be spouting that horseshit."

They then both stop, entering a small clearing to the left then going into the woods. You follow them and feel terror when you spot the rogue picking up two weapons like Ser Balman's and loading them with what looks like a small arrow. You see a hole dug out and an open chest besides it, probably where those weapons come from. What's he going to do with that? You gulp, your heart racing, in your head, you know exactly what his plan is. But why?

"Here." says Guncer while handing a shortsword to the man at arms. "This'll do a better looking cut than that hunk of iron in your belt."

The rogue sneers at him. "I won't be one to deny such a precious gift, good ser." he says, sarcasm seeping from every word in that sentence.

"Don't talk to me like that unless you want to hang from a tree, cunt. Do what you're paid for." Guncer replies. He cleans off the leaves and some dust from his mail and leaves.

Then, the rogue takes off, towards your shack. A dirk stands alone. as the two men separate, going their own way. Your heart races as you think of what to do next. You pick up your ponytail and twirl it during these horrifying few seconds.

You will...

>Time to put all them fighting lessons to use!
You haven't had fighting lessons, you just trained your body to prepare for them.

Gonna do a few updates today, I have to leave multiple times during the day so updates may come by irregularly. Let's do some traumatizing stuff.

The decision is taken. You let your ponytail go and pass by the tree you took as your hiding spot. The dirk lays on the ground, abandoned entirely. You wait to see if the rogue comes back for it, he doesn't. You pick it up by the hilt and look at it. You're not sure what you want to do with it, your mind tells you to run away as fast as you can back to Old Buck's embrace, but you know that would put everyone at risk.

You won't, because you have the blood of the dragon in your veins. Buck told you, and you know it. The dragon does not recoil in adversity, it breathes fire upon its foes and sheds their blood. And if y-you must...

You shake your head, trying to force out the feeling of doubt and dread.

Guncer and his rogue haven't seen you, they're not even sure that you exist at all. The rogue seems to think that Old Buck has a companion, but he wouldn't expect you to take him by surprise.

You start following the rogue's path and see him in the distance, approaching him won't be easy, but he does seem distracted by the forest's dense foliage. Then after approaching him, the best thing to do would be...

Gods. Just thinking about it is making you recoil. Your legs fail as stress overcomes you, you fall on your knees, holding the dirk tight with both of your hands. "Buck, please, what do I do?" you whisper inbetween sobs as tears flow from your face.

Your mind races through the possibilities. You know you can't reach Buck without the rogue spotting you at some point. He'll get there before you do as well, which means that as soon as he sees you, he'll go for your old friend.

As you ponder your next move, you notice something on the old road. A four-legged animal with shaggy and long fur. Young Buck. When he smells you, he approaches you calmly and stays at your feet.

"What are you doing here?" you ask it, he looks at you eagerly, as if waiting for food. "No matter. Follow." you order the animal, and he stands at your side waiting for you to move. You feel invigorated by his presence.

Promptly, you do so, moving forward. The rogue seems to have gotten tangled on some brambles and is trying to remove them, both his weapons are down, but he has unsheathed his short sword to cut the brambles.

It's now or never.

11, 14, 8.

You successfully sneak up towards the man. Ever careful of avoiding loud noises from roots, branches and brambles. Young Buck follows, silent as well, not quite understanding what's going on. When you reach a 10 feet distance, you know that is time. You gulp and give out one large breath, then tap Young Buck on his ass and whisper "Attack."

Without a moment of doubt, Young Buck rushes in a sprint towards the man, who looks back as he hears the dog's movement as he sweeps away all obstacles with ease. It was no use though, Young Buck took his right arm and dug his teeth into it. The man drops his sword, lets out a scream of pain and curses at the dog.

You, you doubted, you approached as well but as you reached him and saw Young Buck lunge and draw blood, you felt scared. More terrified than you had been in your entire life, you step back a few times and can only observe the brutality in front of you.

"I'm gonna fucking kill you, you piece of shit mutt!" The man yells inbetween his grunts of pain. You notice him reaching for the sword with his left hand.

11 and 10. Oh no.

You see him reach for his sword. No, you don't want him to hurt your dog. Young Buck's been with you, he's your friend. He... He'll kill him and you.

You close your eyes as you start crying again and run to him with your dirk in hand. He's distracted by the dog and searching for his sword. As you open your eyes again you aim the dirk and it finds his side. The man screams a horrifying scream and looks at you in the eyes. You see rage, hate, tears, but most of all, you see pain.

Your small sword digs further into his flesh with a sickening noise coming from his insides. Young Buck is still struggling with the man's right arm but the rogue has apparently given up. He pushes you away with his left hand and his breathing goes ragged, he doesn't scream or curse or yell as he looks at his wound and helplessly tries to take out the dirk dug into his side. He looks at you again. "Who... A girl? I... Why..." his voice drifts off as he slumps into the ground. He wheezes for a good minute while you sit there, your face still. Holding his hand to his wound weakly. Then his breathing stops.

You don't move, Young Buck has stopped his bloody work too, realizing the man's no longer even resisting. He goes back to your side and sits, waiting for instructions. You just sit there, you were going to bring your hands to your face but they're bloody. The tears start flowing as you realize what happened.

You cry and cry and cry, it's all you can do. Your heart is broken into so many pieces. You hug your legs and keep looking on and off towards the dead body sitting there. "I'm sorry..." you say multiple times. "I didn't want to..." you tell him as well, but your words are mere wind, with no one to hear them.

You cry and sob until your throat hurts and your eyes itch from the tears flowing through them. Your cheeks are a mess of salty tears and snot has covered your lips.

Your wails echo throughout the forest. As testimony of your regret and penance for your sin. After a while, you're simply so tired that you can no longer cry, the few sobs your body forces on you hurt your tired throat. You feel your mind drifting off as two silhouettes appear in the trees.

In your dreams, a figure of golden white hair, feminine and warm, opens his arms to you. All you want to do is reach to them and be held for hours on end by that stranger. Yet you can never reach her, always at the same distance, always right within your grasp. Yet so far away.

You wake up, slowly. Opening your eyes first, you see a straw bed, your straw bed. At the other side of it is Buck's straw bed. Empty. You sit up, your body aching.

Outside, you hear two men talking.

"... I'm telling you she's not a Targaryen." Buck's voice is recognizable. He's calm and composed.

"Then from a Lyseni woman? Where is she from?" You recognize Ser Balman talking. He's angry, even yelling.

You get up, then the memory comes back. The sound of iron digging into flesh. The scream. The man's eyes. Young Buck growling and shaking its head. You hold your head, scared. Your ponytail is gone, your hair flowing freely, you're wearing some other clothes and your hands have been washed.

You want to leave the house and tell Buck how sorry you are for what you did. But everything hurts, your body, your head. "Buck..." You whimper faintly. "Please, don't hate me."

As if he heard you, you hear Buck rushing into the house and coming close to you. He puts his hands on your shoulders. "Rhae. Oh my sweet Rhae. Are you okay? Did he do something to you?"

"No. But he wanted to do bad things to you. I'm sorry Buck." You start crying again while Balman steps into the house.

"Ser, you realize what this means?" Balman asks Buck.

"It means nothing. Rhae wouldn't do that to someone. She's sweet like honey. Unlike your uncle." You'd never heard Old Buck as serious as he is now.

"Do you dare to accuse my uncle?" Balman says.

Old Buck takes a commanding tone. "Your uncle, ser. Your uncle has wanted you and your brothers dead for the past year. It was a mere suspicion, but now I am sure it is a reality. You saw what that man was carrying."

Balman is silent at first, but he replies. "I hope you will be able to prove that in a fair trial. I'll hope you'll answer for this child's crime."

Old Buck now turns to anger. "You saw what that man was carrying, two crossbows loaded with their bolts, close to mine own home. What more proof do you need? If you can't see what is going on in Byrch Hall, you are blind, Balman."

"But uncle Guncer cared for us for so long. Why now?"

"Why would I know?" Old Buck asks him. "I haven't dealt with him in a prolonged manner for nearly a decade."

You sob some more as the two men speak. Balman approaches you, standing besides your bed. "Who are you?"

"I'm Rhae..." you reply, looking down to the ground in shame.

Buck shakes his head. "You're telling me this girl would do something like that for no reason?"

Balman stays quiet for a bit, then sighs. "Fine, ser Harlan. Though you can't expect me to believe that my uncle would do this. That rogue was paid by someone else."

"No." You say. "I saw him talk with the mean old man, he gave him a sword even. Didn't you see it?" You look at Balman, whose eyes were directed at you, but he averted them when you raised your head.

"Yes, but it's nothing more than a simple shortsword. You'd find thousands like that one in King's Landing." Balman replies.

"Easy then, Balman." Old Buck says. "Check your keep's storage right this day. If you find a crossbow and a shortsword missing. Then this rogue had them from there. You're going to tell me that he infiltrated a bloody keep just to steal two crossbows and a sword? Someone gave them to him."

Balman heads off to sit on a stool in the shack. "I will, ser Harlan. As soon as I reach my keep, Clayton will hear of this. It'll be dangerous though. My uncle isn't a stupid man, he must be prepared for anything, moreso now that he sent a murderer. If we acted against him, he'd do his best to slaughter us all and tell the Rykkers that we were plotting against him."

"The Rykkers can't do anything about this?" Buck asks Balman as he sits on his straw bed.

"I don't think they care. So what if some small keep has its lordling usurped? It's all the same as long as the levy is raised during war, and knights are sent." Balman says.

"What's your plan, then?"

"To use you. I'm sorry, ser Harlan. But you're the only other mature, respected knight in all of the Byrch's lands."

Old Buck looks down, deep in thought. "But Rhae..."

Balman gets up again, closing to you both. "I'll get her a handmaiden to teach her the ways of the court. I'll make her hair black through tinctures, and her eyes will look blue thanks to that. For whoever asks, she's Rae Storm, a bastard daughter of Harlan Slumberhall whom he took in after her mother died. Simple enough. She'll live a good life in Byrch Hall, with you." He then looks outside. "The dog can come, too."

Balman then smiles at you. "Think of it as a payback for saving my life and helping my brother out."

Old Buck now looks at you. "Rhae, is this what you want?"

>"No, I want to stay hidden here with old Buck. Buck said I was Rhae Greysnake, blood of old Valyria, I will always be Rhae Greysnake."

On the one hand, I love the name Rhae Greysnake. On the other, it paints a pretty large target on us. I'm really not sure what to pick other than going with him... Could Rhae pass as an androgynous boy if she bound her chest and stuff?

Rhae is feminine, but she could pass as a boy if she shortened her hair and bound her chest. Though she still has 4-5 years to grow a more feminine figure which could show that she's actually a female. Plus, periods are usually seen by servants.

Yeah, that's right. Pretty hard to miss if we're gonna stay for a while. Let's go with
>"Fine, I'll go with you. I'll be Rae Storm. I'll learn the ways of the court."
We will need some court experience for the future.
>>
>>2865948
You're too young to know how you'll be built. But you're taller than most girls and your body has been trained for nearly a full year. You're not incapable of recieving training. Visenya Targaryen might've not been a beautifully curved woman like her sister, but she was not Brienne of Tarth either.

What I'm trying to say is that as long as she trains hard, Rhae can become quite competent, maybe even more.
>>
>>2865958
Fine. I still prefer not to train as a knight though. Could be fun doing court intrigue and the likes
>>
>>2865955
That's kinda what she is though, she's a small child fed stories by a protective adoptive father. She's obviously not gunna be Daenaerys cuz her childhood was absolutely fucked, but she's valyrian and just appeared in the middle of a field with no memories, Buck has made her feel special. I don't plan on getting 3 dragons and conquering Westeros, but she's also upset from killing someone and from being told she should leave the only person she loves and knows.
>>
>>2865955
Besides, if we dye our hair, who will believe that what she's saying is true, lmao. They will think she is just larping and/or her mother fucking sucked at parenting.
>>
>>2865962
Same here. I hope we can still do some exercises every now and then though, keep up what we've gained over the year.
>>
>>2865966
Yeah no... I'd say we're more like Ciri rather than Daenarys Mary Sue extraordinaire (Tv show wise).

You're being a faglord just cuz you hate one person. The only person Rhae talks to every day is Buck, who says she's special and maybe Targaryen and stuff. I'm not saying we go full dom, I'm saying Rhae is prideful in who she is. Also, I'm fine with both, simply I just don't want to be known as Rae Storm. Would rather focus more in politics than combat, but combat is always gud.

You don't seem to know where you are. I'm not angry at all, I'm fine with whatever happens, but I think it's more canon towards Rhae's character for her to want to be what she's been told she is for the last year by the only person she ever talks to and she knows.
>>
>>2865979
>Most important thing is to know wether you want to live in court or not. And wether you want to change your identity
Alright then. I want Rhae to live in court and take on the role of Rae Storm. I just didn't want her to completely abandon her training that she's had so far.
>>
>>2865971
It seems we've accepted our new identity as Rae Storm. Time to write.
>>
>>2865985
Also, it's not her being le mary sue, it's a prideful child being told she now has to leave her home and be someone else. Rhae could never be Daenaerys, she isn't as mentally fucked up as Stormborn is. It's simply not comparable.
>>
>>2865995
>Don't mind me, just hoping into this part of the discussion
She's also been told that the very nature of what (she's been told) she is, she could be in great danger if the wrong person finds out about it. She's also about to head into something completely unknown to her, some caution wouldn't go wrong.
>>
>>2866006
*due to the very nature
>>
>>2866006
Well, that's why I put in that she agreed to dye her hair. If she just claims she's Rhaenerys Greysnake, who will believe her? She will grow up and eventually stop using it cuz it would be weird for a teenager and adult to then call herself that.

Ah yes "canon," already set in place and ironclad after one thread. It's a quest and still early in one at that. A personality isn't set yet, nor will it be ever given the schizophrenic nature of quest voting. It's quest not a fanfic, get over it.
>>
Why can't we dye our hair blue or purple and claim to be a Tyroshi reeee?
>>
>>2866015
Well, it's been a whole year in game, so it kinda is. She is who she is right now, and I think that while she understands caution, she is still someone told she is special and not used to any filter. She bullied Buck until finally he let her train and fight. I do think, though, that there is a case to be made that she is dutiful and would understand she needs to obey adults right now, but I'm not a psychologist and only going off my limited knowledge.
>>
>>2866029

That you assume another identity does not mean that Buck will know you as such. Buck respects you and who you are. Balman also knows of your identity. Though he only knows you as Rhae, currently.

>>2866015
I imagine your quoting me was on accident, but I'll still reply to what you said. Even if a personality isn't set in stone, the fact that you choose certain options over others cements the type of options you'll have later on. A Rhae raised like a warrior and with pride might no enjoy the thought of being married off for political reasons later on, and it will show. But players could still force it by changing her personality little by little.

"Fine, I'll go with you. I'll be Rae Storm. But I'll learn the ways of both the court and the swords." You reply with fire in your eyes.

Old Buck smiles, and Balman seems surprised. Balman replies. "Fine, fine. We'll just say your mother was a woman from the North, that should placate most complaints. A little, maybe." He rests his head on his closed fist. "Although it would do us no good to lie to my lordly brother. I'm sure he won't mind taking care of you knowing how important you are to ser Harlan and the fact that you might've saved my life and his."

Old Buck looks at Balman with a bit of awe. "You were but a boy last I talked with you, I'm glad you've matured into a good young man at least."

Balman seems prideful at the thought. "Well, I've still only got 17 namedays. But I try to be someone my father would be proud of." He then heads for his crossbow and sword and buckles them up on his belt. "Anyhow, pack your best clothes and be ready to head out. You'll be presented in front of my lord brother."

You look at Buck, not quite understanding what that means. He's told you that people in castles and courts wear very nice clothes, but you've never seen any. "What should I do, Buck?"

Buck returns your stare. "Well, there's a few pieces of clothes that my wife made a long time ago, just in case we were going to have a girl. I kept them hidden in a chest. Simple, but pretty. We also have to wash your hair and body somewhat thoroughly, using some flowers to give out a good smell."

You're not quite sure you like that. The washing you understand, but do you really have to show yourself off as a little girl in front of this lord Clayton?

Going with a girl's clothes.

Old Buck rummages through some chests and drawers. After a few 'I thought they were' moments, he finally gets out a relatively pretty dress, with a beige tunic and a green laced jacket. "This is it." he says as he shows you it in all its simple glory. Balman lets out a small chuckle.

"Something amiss, ser?" Buck asks.

"Oh, nothing at all." Balman replies, taking his hand to his mouth and hiding a wry smile.

You think it's a really pretty dress. A perfect fit for someone who doesn't want to show off. "Thanks, Buck!" You say.

Buck smiles a toothy smile. "It's perfect, ain't it? My wife really wanted a daughter, but after my second son she was in no condition for more children." Buck sighs, remembering things older than even you. "Now now, we've gotta get you washed, you reek of..." Buck seems to stop for a second. "... Well, of dirt and leaves and forest. And a bit of dog too. Go, go now! I'll pick up scented flowers."

You nod and pick up the dress, heading out to the stream with Young Buck. In the way, when alone again, something grips your heart. You still think of that Myles. The man you... The man whose life you took. His face, his blood, his voice. It's all in your mind again. Your cheeriness fades as you reach the stream and remove your clothes to wash yourself. When Buck arrives with the flowers, he sees your sadness while laying the flowers down by the stream. He sits close to you and speaks.

"Are you well, Rhae?" he asks.

Would you like to ask something of Buck?

It's after 277 AC atleast, since the Defiance of Duskendale has already occured and presumably prior to 282 AC since there's been no speak of rebelion against Aerys, but do we know anything beyond that?

I think I'll go ahead and have Old Buck answer most of the questions. I'll leave out the going to hell one since it seems to have gotten the least votes.

Young Buck is prancing about the stream, enjoying a bath. Meanwhile, you look at Old Buckas you wash your arms, who's still sitting at the stream's shore, looking at his dog. "I hurt someone real bad, Buck. Am I evil?" You ask him.

He looks at you, preoccupied. "Rhae, that's..." Old Buck ponders, looking down at his feet, then up again. "You're not evil, that man wanted to hurt us first. You defended us. You made sure he didn't hurt us."

You look at the coursing stream. The sound of it is much sweeter than the cacophony of the great river of the God's Eye which you saw once with Buck. "Who was the man I hurt, Buck?"

Buck looks at you, furthermore worried. "Myles. A cutthroat rogue from Flea Bottom. He never was loved here, or anywhere else."

"Why was he like that?" You ask.

"Because..." He ponders yet again, wondering what to say next. "Because life wasn't good to him, and all he thought he could do was not be good to others. That's all."

You look at Buck, your eyes becoming teary. "Do you hate me for what I did, Buck?"

Buck gets up. "No... No. Rhae. I'd never." He says as he approaches you in the stream, getting to his knees and taking you in an embrace. "Rhae, you've done no evil. It was just evil men trying to hurt us. Men with no hearts."

You let go of your tears, crying by Buck's side. Inbetween sobs, you ask: "Do you think more people will try to hurt us, Buck?"

Buck stays silent, his embrace growing tighter, the hand on your head caressing it. "I swear on my honor as a knight. It won't be so."

His voice was a mix of worry and anger. "I'll protect you, Rhae. No matter what it takes."

You spend a few minutes together like this, at some point, you could see ser Balman Byrch coming for the both of you, but when he saw the situation he turned back without saying a word. Eventually, you calmed down. Clearing your eyes from tears. Young Buck finishes with his bath and gives you a few good licks, promptly stopped by Old Buck, who laughs. "Young girl, you should get used to not being smothered by some old knight's dog any longer. It's unseemly from a lady in the court."

You chuckle. "Young Buck's my dog, I'll let him play with me whenever I want." As you dress yourself. You think of the sword you found in the forest. It was real mysterious. You wonder if you should tell Buck about it now, or maybe let it go for a bit and deal with the matters of court first.

>"Buck, I saw a sword close to the field where you found me. One with a pommel with a sun."

Considering Buck would've told you already anyway, I'll give you the year we're in. It's 279 AC. You woke up in 278 AC. More info dump:

-Lord Paramount Steffon Baratheon and his wife drowned in Storm's end a year past. It's said that their three sons felt much chagrin.

-Rhaegar is betrothed to Elia Martell, they are to marry next year.

-There are talks of a great tourney at Harrenhal next year. Organized by Lord Walter Whent. It's said it will rival any other tourney in the history of the Seven Kingdoms, and will last 10 days. They say it is one of the most important events in centuries, and all lords and ladies of the realm will come to see fair knights in action.

-A tourney in Storm's End, in honor of the dead Baratheon's memory, is won by Barristan Selmy, a member of the Kingsguard and one of the greatest knights in all of the Seven Kingdoms, after defeating Rhaegar Targaryen.

You get what the peoples of the Kingdoms whisper.
>>
"Buck, I saw a sword close to the field where you found me. One with a pommel with a sun." You say in a whisper. As Buck returns to the shore to hand you your clothes, he stops midway and looks back.

"A sword? How? Where?" He also says in a whisper.

"I told you, in the field where you found me, it's dug deep into the ground, you can only see the pommel, and pommel is a sun with no colors." You reply, a bit frustrated, your whispers grow slightly louder. "Why haven't you told me about it?"

"I know of no sword in that field, young lass, and I've been there and back for hundreds of times." Buck tells you. "I mean, maybe I've missed it, but I doubt everyone who passes through here did."

Buck scratches his beard, a mere shadow of its former self, but it looks good on him that short. Honestly, he doesn't look like that ancient without the scraggly beard he once had.

"I'll show it to you." You say.

Buck smiles. "Sure, we'll take a look at it. After we meet Lord Clayton, I don't want you to tear that dress or anything else like that."

As you finish dressing. Ser Balman comes back to the both of you. "Ser Harlan, Rae. We're making for the keep at the earnest. I have a cape here to hide lady Rae's head and back." He taps it a few times, a little dust coming off it. "I took it just in case it rained, since we're coming up on the years of Spring. You never know."

Buck looks at him. "Mummer's talk, ser Balman. There's not a cloud in the sky."

Balman shrugs. "Clouds come and go with the wind. If you always trust the morning's sky, then the evening sky will one day rain on you. Or so my lady mother used to say."

Buck laughs. "Your lady mother was right, she was always right." As he loses himself in memories again, the light in his eyes dims a little. "Still, we better make for the keep, and do our best to avoid ser Guncer."

A smile draws itself across Balman's face. "Well, since you two were having a father-daughter moment earlier. I asked a goodman in the village to go tell the guards of my intention to hold a private court with my brother. I had to give him my shield to demonstrate that those were my words, Clayton's... Lord Clayton's gonna be mad at me."

Buck goes on to Balman's side. "Thank you, Balman. You're doing a lot for us."

Balman puts a hand on Buck's shoulder. "You as well, ser Harlan. As did young Rhae."

You look down with a hint of shame. "I didn't do much."

Balman laughs. "I know I'm the brother of a lordling in the Riverlands, but at least put some value to my life."

"I didn't mean to..."

"I jest. Thank you for saving us, Rhae." Balman says, then he beckons the both of you to come with him. Old Buck gets out his best gear, an old brigandine with a tabard bearing Slumberhall's sygil, and a sword that's seen better days. You pout at him for not having shown you this until now. He says that you hadn't been a lady of the court until then.

Cont.
>>
>>2867787
The sygil of Slumberhall is rather simple. It's a brown wooden hall with a dark blue nightsky behind it, dotted with dim stars. Buck says that his two sons complained about it, that it was not a noble's sygil. Buck told them that they were no nobles, they were upstart hedge knights.

The walk towards the hall was made through some old paths that surrounded Pallars. Paths used mostly by hunters and herders which barely saw traffic. From them you could see the town downhill, but you were also as close as you'd ever been in your life. It felt odd. After a long walk, you arrived at the Byrch Hall, its wooden walls and gate tower over you, with sentries posed at both sides. "Who goes?" They ask, but when they see Balman, they quickly call for the gates to open. You see what seems like the main hall of the Byrch House. a large wooden fort dotted with stone here and there. The stone laying mostly as the base of the building.

Your mind is rushing with thoughts as you enter here. So much is going to happen in so little time. You can't help but feel a little dazed, but must avoid staring at anyone in your way. Though you can feel sentries and servants staring at you while you advance in the company of Buck and ser Balman. You keep your head down dutifully as whispers are heard everywhere you pass. You hear one clearly.

"So it was true, good ser Slumberhall has a bastard."

As Balman said, you are the daughter of a Northwoman. Which is the general lie that will be told to most everyone. You lived with her until she died of a bad flu in the Riverlands, then you went on your lonesome to find your father, Harlan Slumberhall, who took you in.

The plan is to only let lord Clayton Byrch know the truth of your origin right now, which is unknown before your 11th nameday. Since he'll be the one financing your hair dye and he'll also be hosting you.

>>2869273
It could be. Maybe she's just the bastard of a Lyseni whore who left her to die in that field? One bad concussion and trauma from her childhood made her lose her memories.

The entrance to the main hall of the Byrch was a large wooden door, well-crafted, with a set of three birch trees in front of it. To its sides were stone walls, upon which stood the rest of the keep. Old Buck told you that this keep was pure wood once, when the Old Gods ruled all of Westeros, but it expanded over the centuries after the Andal conquest, financed by the many Kings who sought the support of the house of Byrch. After trudging a bit through the winding halls of the keep, you reach another set of double doors, much smaller this time. You dare to look up knowing that only Balman or Harlan could see you. In time to see Balman opening the door to the lord's court.

Two meticulously crafted chairs, made of the white wood of the birch tree, stand at the end of this hall, raised up over it. To reach them you must climb a stair of three steps. A long table with many simpler chairs stands on the way towards those seats. And upon one seat stands a man, fiddling with his right hand and supporting the weight of his head with the left. He seems bored, and he looks a lot like Balman, the same clear brown hair, but much shorter, nearly shaven, and without a beard.

To his left stands a woman, the lady of Byrch Hall, most likely, who sits with a ladylike pose. Her hair is a dirty gold, with brown streaks all over. The room is otherwise empty.

You gleam at the sight of this room. You wonder how the rest of the keep looks like, since you had your eyes looking down all the time. Surely they're all as beautiful as this. Balman is first to enter the room and beckons both you and Old Buck to wait there. He goes to his brother's side and exchanges a whisper. After which, he goes down the steps and gives the sign to come in. You look at Old Buck and he looks back at you. "Keep your eyes down for now, stop when I stop, and bow when I bow."

You nod. The both of you come into the hall, the sound of your footsteps echoing through it. The place is a bit cold, though there is a fireplace to the left of the room. The wood of the floor is old and sturdy as can be.

You keep a good look on Buck's feet as he moves. When they come to a stop, you stop, and when you distinguish a bow, you bow. You're not quite sure how to do it, but you try your hardest.

Lord Clayton is first to speak. "Well, well, Old Buck. It's been a while." he says, with a bit of disdain. "Refusing my dear nuncle's invitation to Byrch Hall for years, and now you come for my help."

Buck's voice is nervous, but firm. "Lord Clayton Byrch, lord of Byrch Hall. Proud bannerman of the Rykkers of Duskendale. I plead for you to offer me and my ward a place in your hall. In exchange, my undying loyalty to your cause along with the girl's."

You hear a shuffle of clothes. Clayton getting up, he steps up towards the stairs. "I've seen your face a hundred times, old Buck. But not the girl's. If what my brother says is true, then this should be interesting."

You feel a knot forming in your throat. Clayton speaks again. "Come closer, girl." He says. You feel so scared, the entire mood feels much more tense than you thought it would. Is this what court is like? Maybe fighting is a better idea.

After a moment of doubt, you begin advancing towards lord Clayton until you reach the steps. You don't look up yet.

Suddenly, you feel a hand on top of your cloak, see Clayton climbing down with his pretty lord's boots. Then he shoves down the cloak. He's behind you, you look up, and see Balman and Clayton's wife observing you. His wife is surprised, looking at you with sharp, wide open eyes.

"So it was true. good ser Slumberhall found a wild Valyrian amidst the fields of the Byrch lands."

Lord Clayton laughs, and you see a smile, wry as can be, appear on his wife's lips. Lord Clayton steps up, standing in front of you atop the steps. "Well then, young girl. My brother said you'd have to be known as Rae Storm. Since you've done him such a great favor, and pretty much convinced your tutor to serve my cause, I'll allow it. I'll get you your dyes or whatever." He takes a hand to his hairless chin, rubbing it, as a smile draws itself across his face.

"But tell me. Are you a lost Blackfyre? Only their male line died, after all. Maybe you're a bastard from Rhaegar? I heard he didn't like his betrothed and had a lover. Or it might be Queen Rhaella had one of her daughters sent away from the clutches of that madman Aerys. Hell, you might just be a simple Lyseni woman's baseborn child who was chased away to Westeros." He looks around as his theories about your origins unfold. Then his stare is fixed towards you, he crouches to keep a head to head level with you.

"You might've told lies to Old Buck to keep yourself from trouble, but you won't lie to me. Tell me who you are."

I take it that our real Valyrian last name isnt actually Silverdrake.

Not as far as you know. It's a name that Old Buck made up for you. Though I've only used it once in the quest, it's something that he kept calling you for a while. Silverdrake when you were good and behaved, Greysnake when you were bad and misbehaved. Though the naming was always in a friendly manner.

"I am Rhaenyra Silverdrake, the blood of Old Valyria. That's all I know." You tell the man. He looks at you, somewhat unconvinced, then to Buck.

"I've never heard of the Silverdrakes." He tells Buck.

Buck keeps his head low. "It's a name I used for her after a while. Since she's blood of the dragon and her hair is silver."

Clayton chuckles. "You're not the most creative of men, Buck. But I imagine the Rhaenyra part is something that you do remember?"

You nod, firm in your belief.

Clayton looks at his wife. "Know of a Rhaenyra?"

His wife speaks with a voice smooth as silk. "The heiress of Viserys the First. The main cause of the Dance of Dragons." she says, staring at her husband.

Clayton nods. "Well, that one's been dead and gone for a while, hasn't she?"

The lady nods back. "More than a hundred years gone, she is."

Clayton raises his hand. "That's out of the picture then, and I imagine there's no more Rhaenyras?"

Lady Byrch nods again, to which Clayton shakes his head and looks back at you. "So. You say you know you're blood of the dragon and not some lucky Lyseni. Do you have any proof? What use would you be to me?"

Proof:
>"I do. A sword which stands where I appeared a year ago. If you give me time, I'll bring it back to you."

I hope he sends a raven to the Red Keep and offers us to Rhaegar, Aerys really wants a Valyrian bride for his son and is enough of a cunt to tell Doran to go kick rocks.

Has Buck told us about Aerys' search for a wife for Rhaegar? Or does he not know why Steffon died?

Proof? You wonder, what proof do you truly have? You think of the sword back in the field, surely it's important and could serve as proof, but you feel it would be safer to meet fiery words with fiery words. "Look at my eyes and hair, there is all the proof I have."

Clayton looks at you surprised. Use? Of course you're useful. You tell him as well. "I can only plead with you to protect me, Valyrians are rare, I'm sure someone rich will be glad to see me alive, one day."

Clayton seems even more surprised by your choice of words. "You..." He goes still for a moment, thinking. "You're clever, that much is true. You have the will of a dragon. You're right about your ascendancy being useful, and though many will say that you're no more than a Lyseni, another many will say that you're too pure to be from the lands of Lys. I've seen a Targaryen and I've seen a Lyseni, they're cut from different trees, no matter how much the latter tries to replicate the first."

You look at lord Clayton firmly, though deep inside all you want to do is return to the old shack with Buck and Young Buck and the animals there. Old Buck gets up and speaks.

"My lord, you see that she's no harebrain, even though she has much to learn. Please, accept our plan."

Clayton sits upon his white throne of birch. "Fine. If we craft a nifty enough plan, things should go well. But first, peace at home. Balman, Harlan, come with me to my bedroom. There we will discuss matters further." he sweeps his hand upwards and Harlan rises. Old Buck pats you on the head.

"Be good. Do all you're told." He says, and he and Balman leave the hall.

Clayton gets up and looks at his wife. "Jeyne, take the girl and ensure she gets a proper wash. I'll have a tint for her in a few days. No servants."

Lady Jeyne nods, looking at you. Her calm yet sharp eyes pierce you. She exudes curiosity. She gets up in an elegant and ladylike manner, slowly, making sure that her dress is well placed at all times. Her hands meet in front of her in a relaxed pose. "Come, little lady."

You don't want to get washed, actually, you want to go with old Buck and the other two to plan along with them. You've done so much for them. Yet Buck didn't seem eager to bring you with him, and lady Jeyne seems like a very nice lady. You stay put for a bit, leaving an awkward silence in the air.

You nod and head towards lady Jeyne, who bows to you dutifully. "I am Jeyne of Duskendale, daughter of Anser." She says, her streaks of golden hair covering her fair visage when she bows her head. She then looks at you straight in the eyes. "Tell me, who are you?"

Strange. You were sure she had heard your name, why would she ask who you are? Oh, right. A ladylike behaviour is what she wants.

You bow as well, bending your head forward. "I am Rhaenyra Silverdrake, now known as Rae Storm. Daughter of old Valyria."

Jeyne smiles, closing her eyes for a soft laugh. "It gladdens me to meet you, lady Rhaenyra. Please, follow me."

She goes down the steps and passes you, after that you follow her closely. Her dress is made of a beautiful green with many white streaks going through it from top to bottom. She opens a door and heads down a hallway with you. At the end of the hallway, there are three closed doors made of wood. One to the right, one in the center, and one to the left. She opens the right door. "This room was used by Morgan when he was little, but it'll fit you."

"Morgan?" You ask, curious. You know it is the brother of Clayton, but Buck barely mentioned him.

Jeyne nods. "Yes, my husband's brother, a boy of 15. Very bookish, he'll be leaving for the Citadel in a year, you know what that is?"

"Yes." You reply. Buck told you of it, he said that if he hadn't been a knight, surely he'd have been a Maester at some point, so he would've lived in the Citadel of Oldtown.

"Good. Ser Harlan has always been dutiful when it came to knowledge. As should you. Knowledge makes a woman strong in a world of men." Jeyne says while entering the room.

The room is as big as Buck's shack. You see a bed made of birch, clad in the tree's white, a fairly good wooden chair and a desk to go along with it. There's also a small bookshelf, which reminds you.

You don't know how to read. Shame fills your face as you think of that. These people probably knew how to read at your age.

You look at lady Jeyne. Who's picking up a book and passing by pages. "My lady, I..."

Jeyne looks back at you, awaiting for you to finish. "Yes, young Rhaenyra?"

"I don't know how to read." You tell her. "I didn't learn with ser Balman."

Jeyne chuckles. "I don't think good ser Balman knows how to read either, maybe a few words and letters. I wouldn't worry about, we have much time to learn."

You're surprised, you were expecting this noble lady to resent having to take care of a girl like you. She seems very agreeable with you.

"Well, young Rhae. First we have to wash you. But tell me, would you like me to teach you how to read after all? It'd take a while, but surely you'd enjoy being able to read Morgan's old books while you learn other courtly matters."

You realize that inbetween the reading and the court matters, you wouldn't be able to learn your way in a fight as well. You must make a choice for your long term training.

Yes, probably a short one.

>Learn how to read and write and courtly matters.

"Yes, lady Jeyne. I'd love to." You tell her, somewhat awkwardly. She smiles at you with a warm, motherly smile.

Lady Jeyne closes the book and returns it to the shelf. The both of you leave Morgan's room. Well, your room now, technically. Jeyne explains to you how you'll have to be hidden until your hair is dyed, and that until you're revealed to court, you'll be prepared and groomed by her. She mentions teaching you how to present yourself to the courtiers, how to keep your hair pretty, and how to make your voice sound more melodious.

You don't really know what to think of it. Why's it important even? Do people really care that much about the pitch of your voice or the prettiness of your hair? Buck never cared, Young Buck never cared, nor did the chickens and mule. You keep your concerns to yourself, as you don't want to sound too weird to lady Jeyne.

To wash yourself, you head towards a room which she mentions is close to her room, which she shares with her husband. This room is large, and a bath had already been prepared, you don't know by who, but the large bucket in the center has some steaming hot water in it. Jeyne asks if you know how to take a bath, you nod, you bathed in the stream after all. She laughs and mentions that it's ever so slightly more intricate if you want to be a pretty lady.

Again, you're dumbfounded. "What's a pretty lady supposed to be?"

Jeyne tests the water of the tub with her fingers. "A pretty lady is one whose skin and hair shines, whose dress is clean and polished, and whose manners show the nobility coursing in her blood."

"I thought I was pretty."

"You are, a pretty peasant, but not a pretty lady." She looks at you and smiles yet again. "Now, undress, I believe I have much work to do with you. You hair has to be prepared for the tinctures too."

You do as she says and enter the bath. It's the hottest water you've ever been, and for a bit you wonder if you're not entering in a trap and aren't about to be turned into a soup of Valyrian meat. But after a bit you start feeling calm, the water seems to relax your entire body and you feel a peace you hadn't experienced before, this warmth is so much different from the sun's or a hot day in the stream, this is much more engrossing.

You then feel lady Jeyne touching your hair and moving it around. "What are you doing?" You ask her.

She pulls around a bit more. "Your hair is a tangled mess." She says. "I'll have to brush it."

Cont.
>>
>>2874980 Forgot trip.

"What's brushing?" You ask her. She shows you a strange stick with other, much smaller sticks coming out of it. It's also made of birch wood, at least on the handle. You then feel it on your hair. You let out a small yelp as she combs out all the tangles of your hair. Jeyne then requests that you plunge it into the water. You do so, even if somewhat scared. The hot water surrounding face and hair, it's cooled somewhat, but is still pleasantly warm. She then continues with her brush.

"Such a shame." she says. "Your hair is a beautiful silvery color, yet it was filled with all that dirt and mess to such a degree that it looked gray. Has ser Harlan taught you no care for your body?"

"He has, I just never did it." You know that was a lie, but you wouldn't want to say something nasty about Old Buck. Eventually, after some more care and brushing from Jeyne, you notice your hair becoming a more silvery color, which makes you feel somewhat nostalgic of those first days with Buck. When your grooming is done, you get out of the bath and let yourself dry, then put your clothes back on.

As you're done, Jeyne adresses you again, "Have you flowered yet, lady Rhaenyra?"

You look at her, weirded out. "Flowering?"

Jeyne looks at you, then lets out a sigh. "I can tell ser Harlan had no daughters. We must talk."

The next few minutes are an uncomfortable realization about your condition as a woman. Jeyne tells you that you must visit her as soon as this "Flowering" happens. Though you'd be more keen on calling it a bloodletting. Jeyne then lets you return to your room, where you enjoy your time resting on the bed, much better than what you had back in the shack. After a few hours, Old Buck calls for you, he's bringing two hot meals with some meat in it. "How'd it go?" He asks, with the good old Buck smile.

"Nasty, I don't like having to look pretty. Though the hot bath was very nice."

Buck smiles and goes to shuffle your hair, but stops himself, looking at his dirty hands. "You're prettier than you've ever been, Rhae." he says.

Buck and you both seat on the bed, a short silence falling over the room. "So Buck. What did you discuss in the room?" You ask.

Old Buck chuckles. "Straight to business, my lady."

You frown. "It's important stuff, and I want to know the important stuff."

Old Buck now laughs. "Of course, Rhae. I'm teasing you." He says before proceeding.

"The first thing we discussed was ser Guncer and his intentions. Clayton said he knew of a plot by Guncer, but never imagined... Well, that. That was a first. Of course, both him and Balman assumed that the fact that Guncer is taking such radical steps can only mean that he has a lot of people on his side. Mostly the knights of Byrch Hall. That's where I come into play." Buck lets out a sigh. "I'm going to be groomed to look as pretty a knight as can be. That I was invited by lord Clayton to live at the hall as a favor for my service during his regency, since I needed a home for you, my 'baseborn daughter'." He says that with a hint of disdain.

"Fine, but tell me of this one day." Is your reply to old Buck's plead. He nods.

"I swear I will. Anyhow..." Buck regains his composure and continues. "The point of all that is, of course, to make me a teacher for the knights and to take in boys as wards. Those that I teach will take my side if Guncer were ever to do something nasty, and my side is Lord Clayton's side."

"Why couldn't lord Clayton do it himself?"

"He's young, and he's been in a regency under ser Guncer, and ser Guncer's most trusted knight was I, way back in the day, so I had much to do in the day to day affairs of the regency. Though it shouldn't be said out loud, I command more respect than his lordship."

You look at Buck oddly. It's hard to take in this talk of so many years past and dealings of a court. "Why would ser Guncer do this to lord Clayton?"

Buck shrugs. "Blind ambition? An intrigue that goes farther than Byrch Hall? None of us really knew, neither did lady Jeyne. I dealt with him for years, and I never saw ambition in him, so I don't understand it myself. Why would someone be interested in Byrch Hall?" Buck sighs. "That was the reason I came to Byrch Hall. No one was really interested in it. All they do is swear their allegiance to whoever rules Duskendale and follow whatever orders they're given. Ser Guncer was going to live a long and decent life in honorable service to his nephew, and he threw it all away." Buck looks at your confused expression. "Anyhow, that's that. Now we must talk about that sword you told me about."

Buck gets up to stretch a bit, then moves the desk's chair to face you and sits on it. "Obviously, we can't go find it right now. At least not until your hair is black as night. Do you want me to go covertly? I've got an excuse in that I'm going to get Young Buck, was him, and bring him here. Mule's coming too, along with the chickens."

You smile as you think of your poor dog, he must be so confused, leashed and alone back at the shack. The thought of having that sword close to you is also very appealing. You feel so drawn to it, like it's your own little sword in the middle of the forest.
