In the far future, biotechnology advances by leaps and bounds, creating stunning achievements in medical, civil, and military applications. Illness becomes a thing of the past, and genetic modification is as commonplace as cosmetic surgery.

However, like all great advances, unchecked progress and experimentation has led to abuse and corruption. Ultra powerful megacorporations that monopolized the latest biotech have risen to be the great powers of the age, waging secret wars of sabotage, espionage, and deceit to get ahead of each other.

In order to fuel their rampant growth, megacorps develop lethal diseases and viruses, horrific bio-organic abominations, and ever more exotic genetic modifications to both sell to the highest bidder and unleash upon each other.

The rampant proliferation of bioweapons, and the need to contain them, has given rise to a new profession, the BIOWEAPON HUNTER.

"Keep moving." The police officer grunts as he gives you a rough shove from behind.

You don't respond to him, but you do pick up the pace just a bit. You're just as eager to get this over with as he is.

You're led through the crowded halls of the Raccoon City Police Headquarters, past throngs of police officers, apprehended criminals, and regular civilians trying to find recourse for some problem in their lives. You don't have much time or inclination to pay much attention to them, though.

Finally, you're led to a stark white room, almost blinding, with a massive mirror set in one of the walls. It didn't take an expert to know you were being shoved into an interrogation room.

The interrogation room looked just as how you remembered it. Right in center of the room was a simple steel table bolted to the ground and a pair of chairs. Up on the ceiling, a pair of automated sentry guns carefully track your movements, the barrels staring at you like a set of eyes. A special accommodation for those suspects who were "uncooperative".

"Oh hey, you still got the old chair." You grin.

"Quiet." The officer grunts as he roughly sits you down in one of the chairs before heading back to the door.

"Wait, aren't you forgetting something?" You ask coyly as you raise your handcuffed arms.

"The cuffs stay on."

"Well, don't I at least get my phone call? Or at least a glass of water?" You grin.

"Just sit down and shut up. The Captain will be here soon." The officer says bluntly before exiting.

Hard asses like always. You lean back in your chair, staring at the mirror in front of you. You wonder what happened to your partner, Hank. Probably in an identical interrogation room so they could grill you both separately before the lawyers got here.

The door then slides open, and a very familiar face appears. You never though the standard police uniform was particularly sexy or attractive, but Lucina somehow seemed to make it work, even if it wasn't intentional. She looked the same as ever, pretty, but looking eternally tired and overworked. Not surprising given her line of work.

"Hey there, Lucy, long time no see." You grin as you raise your cuffed hands again. "Your men are getting much ruder by the day, you know?"

"Stow it." Lucina shakes her head in exasperation. "Tell me what the hell happened."

"I don't know what you're talking about." You shrug, feigning ignorance.

"Don't be coy with me, asshole." Lucina glowers as she reaches into a folder and drops a pile of pictures on the table, showing what once used to be a nice office building, with the top quarter of the building turned into a blazing inferno.

"Wow, looks like a real party." You nod.

"We know you and Hank were involved." Lucina glowers. "Hounds confirmed the presence of your DNA on site, and we have surveillance footage showing you fleeing the scene. You're not wriggling out this one."

Damn, Lucina was really on your ass on this one. That could only mean that little "event" pissed off someone pretty high up in the city bureaucracy.

"Now's the time I ask for my lawyer." You cross your arms.

"Goddamnit, Lewis." Lucina sighs and shakes her head. "Are you really going to do this?"

"You heard me." You confirm and nod to one of the cameras looking down on you. "And did they."

As was customary in your line of work, your client was providing complementary legal protection for anything related to your job. You'd be back to the office within the hour. Corp lawyers were the best in the business, after all.

"All right, well, before you go..." Lucina reaches into her bag and pulls out a clipboard.

No.

Was she going to-

"We'll just have to update your department records while we wait!" She says cheerfully.

"Why?" You croak. "It's going to take FOREVER to process!"

"If you're going to be a pain in my ass, it's only fair for me to return the favor." Lucina replies sweetly as the takes out a pen. "The sooner we get this done, the sooner you can leave~."

"Fine, let's get this over with." You grumble.

"All right, name."

"Lewis Langstrom." You sigh.

"Employer?"

"Well..."

"I am employed the the private military contractor Ghost Corps." You answer. While it was tempting to go freelance be your own master, being a part of a PMC afforded a lot of benefits. Not just a good dental plan, but a steady paycheck, access to top of the line tech, and most importantly, biomods.

"Noted." Lucina nods. "And do you currently have any biomods installed?"

Well, yeah. It was practically a requirement in this line of work, given the type of things you had to rein in. Hank was practically the only "normal" human who managed to not die horribly to some unsightly horror.

DEFENSE: You have a biomod that primarily focuses on defense, keeping you and others alive in any situation.

OFFENSE: You have a biomod that lets you directly attack opponents without the use of a weapon.

SENSORY: You have a biomod that enhances the way you percieve the world around you.

Well, of course, you had...

EAGLE VISION: The performance of the human eye is taken to its maximum theoretical limit, allowing users to see with perfect clarity. Users are also able to manually adjust the range of their vision, being able to see even the tinest speck of dust miles away. A must have for any self respecting sharpshooter.

INFRARED VISION: Users can shift from regular vision mode to a built in infrared mode, allowing them to see heat instead of light, which is incredibly useful in dark environments and hunting elusive targets in close quarters.

BIOSENSOR: By tweaking several parts of the brain, the user is able to perceive the faint electromagnetic fields all living creatures emit. This allows the user to sense targets in a rough direction, through all but the most specialized materials.

SNIFFER: Users have an enhanced sense of smell, allowing them to detect and track anything that can give off a scent.

ECHOLOCATION: The combination of enhanced hearing and modified larynx allows the user to emit high frequency sound like a type of radar. Useful for navigating in complex, low visibility environments.

"I have an electromagnetic bio sensor." You tell her. "Same as last time. I haven't installed anything new."

"Right, the medical scan seems to confirm this." Lucina nods. "All right, now on to the next item...

It's another two agonizing hours before Lucina runs down the entire checklist and processes it into the RCPD's computer database. You knew she was doing it on purpose, her little revenge for you stonewalling her investigation. Kinda pointless, in your opinion. The corps were going to bury the whole incident in a couple days, anyways.

Finally, you're led out of the station and essentially kicked out onto the street. There, you see Old Man Hank, already waiting for you with a steaming cup of coffee in his hands.

"You got coffee?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Show the boys in blue some respect and they'll show some back." Hank cracks a grin. "Plus I still got a few friends in the force."

"And I see you only have one cup." You point out.

"Well, you've been a naughty boy, I've heard." Hank chuckles. "Anyways, the client's lawyer already handled everything. Everything's clean."

"Gotcha." You nod. "So... back to the office?"

"Get in." Hank motions to his car, one of those extremely old classic muscle cars. You didn't have even have to have an biomodded nose to tell it was using an ancient combustion engine.

"So, I take it Lucy busted your balls again." Hank remarks as he stomps the gas, blasting the car off at a ridiculous speed.

"Yeah, what's new?" You roll your eyes as you settle into the passenger seat. "She learned it all from you, after all."

"That she did." Hank cackles.

Hank was... an interesting fellow. He used to be a RCPD detective, and was old enough to remember what it was like before the force was essentially bought out by Umbrella. That's when he decided to quit in go into the private sector. If he was going to be a corporate flunkie, he'd at the very least get paid well for it.

But... other than that, you didn't really know all that much about him outside of work, even after the years you've been partnered together. You suppose it was both of your methods of keeping distance. After all, being a Hunter was a dangerous profession.

Soon enough, you reach the Office, the headquarters of Ghost Corps. Hank pulls into the garage and swings his car into a parking stall.

"Anyways, I really gotta take a leak." Hank grunts as he gets out. "What are you gonna do?"

"Hey, Hank, you mind running the item to Disposal? I'm gonna stop by the Lab." You say.

"What, again?" Hank sighs. "Seriously, it was only ONCE, and it was an accident at that!"

"Not to me." You say coldly, shuddering at the memory of that botched cavity search and quickly burying it. "Can never be too careful."

"Whatever, kid." Hank shakes his head and waves you off.

You take the elevator up to the Lab, where your company's resident scientist, Nemo, was fast asleep at her desk, as always, her messy hair all over the place.

"Nemo. Nemooooo." You prod her head carefully with her finger.

"Oh, you're back." Nemo yawns. "Was just taking a bit of a nap."

"Obviously." You nod.

"Another scan?" Nemo raises an eyebrow. "You know, Lucy's not the type to do anything like that to you."

"No, but one of her men might." You shrug.

"Right, right." Nemo sighs as she pulls out a gun-like object and points it at you. It beeps and starts projecting blue light on your body. "Anyways, how's my big sis doing?"

"A hardass, as usual."

It was a weird twist of fate, but Nemo and Lucina were actually sisters. Twins, in fact. However, the circumstances of their birth were... unusual to say the least. Due to some odd compromise between their parents, Lucina had her DNA rewritten and "optimized" while still in the embryo to make her "perfect", while Nemo was left completely alone with "natural" genes. Ironically enough, Nemo inherited her mother's genius anyways, giving her some way to keep up with her literally perfect sister.

To say that their relationship was complicated was and understatement, at best.

"See? You're all clear." Nemo concludes. "No viral trackers or implants or anal probes to be found."

"Thanks." You sigh in relief.

And that's when you notice three black, steel creates propped up at the back of the lab. You swear that sort of resembled... coffins.

"What are those?" You ask.

"A surprise." Nemo says simply as she rests her head on her desk again. "You should go talk to the Boss about it."

"Yeah, I guess so." You nod. "I'll catch you later then, Nemo."

"I'll still be here..." Nemo says softly as she closes her eyes and dozes off.

You head out of the lab and to the main office area, where you spent most of your time when you weren't off on a mission. It wasn't much different from a regular office floor, with you and Hank having your own cubicles with the Boss having her own personal office.

However, as you get to the office floor, you see the Boss and Hank, apparently in some sort of argument. It was odd seeing the grizzled veteran arguing with a woman who was barely half his height, but the Boss was no ordinary woman. She had a sharp business acumen and management style that rivaled a megacorp CEO.

In fact, you wondered why she was running a relatively small outfit like Ghost Corps when she could easily take over any other company she wanted.

"What do you mean you're taking me off the active duty roster?!" Hank cries.

"Your medical reports came back, Hank." The Boss says sadly. "Your antibody count is far above normal levels. Your immune system can't keep up with the infection factors any more."

Infection factors were a cold reality among Hunters. Recovering dangerous viruses and battling bio-organic weapons eventually took a toll on the body. Foreign DNA, synthetic disease, and manufactured viruses, even if rendered safe and inert, built up over time to the point where a Hunter risked having their immune system completely shut down or worse, mutate into the kind of abomination they fought regularly.

Usually, most Hunters either died or voluntarily retired before their infection factor became an issue. But Hank...

"So that's it? I do my work and my thanks is getting kicked to the curb?" Hank seethes.

"I never said that." The Boss says calmly. "You'll just be taking more... support oriented roles from now on."

"So a paper pusher." Hank grunts and looks to you. "Can you believe this shit?"

"It sucks, man, but I think the Boss is making the right call." You say sadly. "Who else can I trust to keep me out of the shit if you go full mutie on me?"

"I guess." Hank grumbles. Your endorsement of the Boss' decision seems to make him realize he's outnumbered on this and he backs down. "But who's gonna keep an eye on the kid? And I don't know if you've seen, but I ain't really good at the whole paperwork thing."

"Fortunately, I have a solution to both of those problems!" The Boss says happily. "G, you can come in now!"

And that's when a door opens and a... maid of all things calmly walks in.

However, something's not right about this maid. Your bio sensor warns you that she's throwing off FAR more EM signals than any living creature ought to, and that's when it hits you.

"You bought Hank a Doll?" You raise an eyebrow.

Dolls were essentially androids. Robots built to look like people. In this day and age, they were primarily used in the pleasure and service sector as caretakers, waste disposal technicians and... well...

"Boss, I'm not THAT desperate for companionship." Hank frowns. "And I sure as hell can take care of myself."

"You medical scans indicate otherwise, master." The Doll, G, says in a calm yet stern voice, like a strict schoolteacher. "Besides the elevated infection factor, your liver is showing signs of chronic damage, your blood alcohol level is elevated, you are 26% overweight, and you are overdue on your vaccination renewals."

"Wait... I am?" Hank blinks. "Wait! So you think I can't take care of myself?!"

"Well, a bit." The Boss admits. "But G here is no ordinary Doll. She's a special variant, a Tactical Doll, or T-Doll for short. Dolls specially modified for combat applications."

"Whoa, wait, is that even legal?" Hank gasps. "I thought Dolls couldn't be armed?"

"More accurately, T-Dolls are considered autonomous weapon systems, which by current US law requires a 'man in the loop' to provide final authorization for use of force." G recites. "However, I do retain all of my base functions as well, so I can serve any and all of your needs, master."

"The hell is going on here, Boss?" Hank raises an eyebrow.

"Well, it just sort of struck me." The Boss shrugs. Infection rates and mutations are such problems for flesh and blood Hunters, what if we used something that didn't have to worry about those? There's quite a few tech companies that think the same way."

"Wait..." You pause as everything starts coming together. "You're assigning a T-Doll to be my new partner?"

"Exactly!" The Boss nods with a beaming smile, like you answered a pop quiz question correctly.

Unless we're an idiot, we use drones and other types of robotic weapon and surveillance systems so that they're the ones getting the attention of whatever mutated bioweapon we're hunting, and not us.
This is just one better drone, that can take shots meant for us, and it's probably good enough to fool the mutants that are smart enough to be a real problem.

"More expensive and less expendable." The Boss says cheerfully as she hands you a file. "These tech companies are chomping at the bit to collect combat data, so they're practically giving us their prototype units for free for field testing. Looks like they want to muscle in on big bio boys' turf."

"Nothing like good old corporate rivalry." You nod as you glance at the file. "Did Nemo go through these?"

"Of course she did. She's added her input on the models we're being offered." The Boss grins. "Now go on! Pick one!"

Model:Special Tactics and Assault Recon (ST-AR)
Manufacturer: US Robotics

One of the very first T-Dolls developed for general use, the ST-AR line is designed for full autonomous operation with minimal human input. ST-AR are designed to operate alone or in small groups, and their advanced tactical and strategic planning modules enable them to quickly learn their enemies' weaknesses and exploit them.

They weren't kidding when they said this one is the very first. It's already got thousands of combat hours logged, so it's definitely the most experienced of the lot. But the problem of being first is that its systems are roughly a generation behind the newer models. Its combat experience will still carry the day in conventional engagements, but anything fancy like hacking or electronic warfare may be beyond it. I've also heard that it sometimes doesn't follow orders, or interprets them in odd ways. Just something to watch out for.

Model: Special OPerations MODular (SOPMOD)
Manufacturer: Cyberdyne

Built to be highly versatile and upgradeable, SOPMOD is built with a basic universal frame that can accommodate a variety of specialized mission modules that can be easily swapped out to handle the situation at hand. The proprietary Universal Adapter software also allows SOPMOD to integrate and communicate with non-Cyberdyne parts for maximum customization.

I'm not sure if it's some sort of bug in this particular model, or if their software is flawed at a fundamental level, but this model shows some pretty clear sociopathic and sadistic tendencies. In particular, it likes collecting "trophies" from its kills. Other than that though, they've really put this model through its paces so its abilities are proven. Keep an eye on this one.

Model: Hunker Killer (HK)
Manufacturer: Toha Heavy Industries

The first purpose built T-Doll, the HK boasts the most advanced hardware and software. HK is stronger, faster, and smarter than any other T-Doll in existence, and is the way of the future.

I have to admit, the tech on this model is... pretty amazing. Some real high end stuff here, as expected of THI. I don't even want to think about how much it costs. Lots of built in capability, but this thing is so new it has zero combat hours. You might have to babysit this one for a while before it can get on its feet.

"This Hunter Killer model seems like a good pick." You decide. "I think I'll run with that."

"Excellent! I'll go ahead and let Nemo know to begin the preparations!" The Boss absolutely beams. "You should head down to the Lab oversee it!"

The both of you then turn to Hank, who keeps walking briskly around the office, attempting to throw G off of his trail but the T-doll remains adamant, constantly following him around.

"Don't worry, I'll make sure they don't get into trouble." The Boss assures you. "Now go on! you need to meet your new partner!"

Partner, huh...? Could a robot even be that?

Regardless of this thought, you return to the lab, where Nemo is already fiddling with one of the black coffins.

"Going with HK, huh? The safe pick, I suppose." Nemo yawns. "You ready?"

"As much as I'll ever be." You nod.

Nemo hits the release lever and there's a pneumatic hiss as the coffin opens. Cold mist begins to dissipate and you can see what looks to be a sleeping girl tucked inside. She had pale skin, long white hair, and was wearing some sort of black and blue uniform, not unlike some special military agent. If it weren't for your bio sensor screaming warnings at you, you could have sworn that this was a real girl in the flesh.

"Okay, powering her up." Nemo continues as she hits another key.

The T-Doll's eyes instantly snap open, revealing two emerald lenses. They stare blankly ahead.

"Booting up main systems." The T-Doll says in a monotone, lifeless voice. "Initiating setup procedure. Commander, please state your name."

"Lewis." You respond.

"Acknowledged. Name and voiceprint logged." The T-Doll says simply. Her eyes flash, as if taking a picture of you. "Biometric data logged. Setting up security settings."

There's another brief pause before she speaks up again.

"This unit's current designation is HK. Would you like to modify it?"

"Acknowledge. Completing setup process. Initiating personality module." HK replies as she shuts her eyes.

HK's eyes them open again and she calmly steps forward and out of the coffin, standing at attention and saluting you.

"T-Doll HK reporting for duty, Commander." HK says dutifully, saluting you. "Awaiting your orders, sir. Please be sure to rely on me."

You pause. Commander? That was... new.

"Well uh, just follow me back for now." You say. Something about the thought of just leaving the T-Doll at the office just didn't sit right with you.

"Understood." HK nods and takes a few steps forward. "Following your lead."

This... was going to take some getting used to...

"I think I'll call it for the day." You say to Nemo. "I guess I'll go show HK the ropes."

"See you tomorrow, then." Nemo yawns.

It's a fairly quick drive back to your apartment, HK quietly in two. She doesn't utter a single word during the car ride there or the elevator ride up. It was a bit unnerving, but unavoidable, you guess.

You punch in the code to the front door. HK looks to tense a bit.

"No, this is MY residence." You explain as push the door open.

However, that moment of distraction proves to be your greatest mistake, as the dangerous foe lying in wait inside leaps out at you.

Your biosensor triggers as a strong EM field starts moving behind you. It could only be HK attempting to intercept Carol. No doubt her programming determined it was a hostile attack of some sort.

All right! Our first roll of the quest!

So, the system here will be the classic VMQ-style best of 3, which means a roll of a 1 will automatically negate the highest of the 3 rolls, so you better hope the second roll is also good!

20s are an autosuccess, double 20s are crit success, and double 1s are crit failures!

So let's get this started!

>Roll 1d20

You motion for HK to stop and she instantly halts her momentum right as Carol shoots past her, slamming into your chest like a cannonball.

Fortunately, this wasn't your first rodeo with Carol, and you're able to keep your footing, if only barely.

"Lewie! You're all right!" Carol squees.

"What the heck are you doing here, Carol?" You ask incredulously. "I thought you has a rehearsal today?"

"We were, until a building two blocks away exploded." Carol pouts. "I figured you had something to do with it, didn't you?"

"Well..."

"Anyways, it's good to see you're okay!" Carol says happily. "And it looks like you brought a-"

Carol pauses as she meets eyes with HK. Her nose twitches rapidly, as if something about HK didn't smell right. At the same time, HK's eyes start glowing, as if scanning Carol.

This wasn't good-

"She doesn't have a smell." Carol growls, her teeth morphing into fangs.

"Unacceptable level of genetic mutation detected." HK announces in a monotone voice. "Permission to exterminate-"

"Whoa whoa whoa!" You cry as you step between the two 'girls' to calm things down. "Sorry Carol, I wasn't expecting you to be here today. Um, why don't you get dinner going? I'll get HK here up to speed."

"Hmmm, okay, Lewie, if you say so." Carol nods, morphing back into her "base" human form. "I'm making steak again tonight!"

HK continues to warily glare at Carol until she's out of line of sight, and then her gaze snaps back to you.

"Your sister registers as a Bio Organic Weapon." HK reports. "Why did you deny my termination request?"

"Look it's... it's complicated, okay?" You sigh. "Sit down, please."

HK nods and sits down in the sofa as you sit down in the chair opposite of her.

"Please elaborate." She says.

"Honestly, I'm not sure how or why she's like that, either. She's been like that ever since I knew her." You admit. "But she's completely harmless. Well, unless you threaten me or our parents."

"Your parents are aware of this, too?"

"Yeah, but Mom never did tell me how exactly Carol came to be like this." You frown. "Never did like talking about those times."

"If you say Carol poses no threat, I will revise her threat index." HK nods. "Is anybody else aware of this?"

"No, and I'd like to keep it that way." You shake your head. "You can't tell anybody else about this."

"Understood." HK nods. "Updating primary directives.

"Thanks." You finally start to relax just a bit.

"If I may ask, how has she not been found out?" HK wonders.

"Carol knows how to fool DNA scanners, but she lets her guard down in private." You explain.

"That's Omega-level shapeshifting." HK notes. "A feat considered scientifically impossible."

"And me and Mom would like to keep it that way."

"Understood." HK nods again.

"So, uh, HK, right?" Carol pokes her head out of the kitchen door. "Um do your kind, er... eat?"

"I can simulate eating and convert organic matter into biofuel to supplement my onboard power source." HK explains.

"So... I'll take it as a yes!" Carol smiles as she withdraws back into the kitchen.

You decide to stay in the living with HK, just to make sure she could get properly accustomed to your rather modest apartment.

"So, I can show you around." You offer.

"I've already done a localized scan of the area with my onboard radar." HK says simply. "I have already completely mapped out this entire apartment complex."

"Oh... okay." You guess Nemo wasn't kidding when she said HK was top of the line.

"So, um, what exactly are your full capabilities?" You ask, genuinely curious. "It would be nice to know what my new partner can do."

"Of course." HK nods. "My model line includes the latest sensor and electronic warfare package. I can see in all spectrums of light, have a built in Soliton Radar system, can access wireless networks, and hack or disrupt electronic systems I am connected to.

"In addition, my basic frame is built from 3D printed composite material rated to be three times stronger than steel at half the weight. With built armor, damage control, and redundant systems, I have the equivalent protection to a light armored vehicle.

"My external covering is standard Cyberdyne artificial tissue, meant to both mimic the appearance of a human as well as protect my interior components from damage and corrosion.

"My combat software allows me to operate 3,624 different weapons with maximum proficiency, while my learning module allows me to self-write firmware in real time to use any weapons not stored in my memory. I am versed in all close quarter combat techniques, squad level and individual combat tactics, and combat operations planning."

"That's... impressive." You blink. "And er, do you know things that other Dolls do like cooking, cleaning, or...?"

"Since I am purpose built T-Doll, my base programming only contains combat protocols." HK explains. "All noncombat applications were considered extraneous and not installed in my operating system."

"Kind of a shame, really, but I understand." You nod.

"Is there an issue with that way I'm programmed?" HK asks.

"Well-"

"Dinner's ready!" Carol chimes. "Come on and dig in!"

Your big sisters quickly herds both you and HK into the kitchen, where you can see a whole plate full of cooked steaks. Easily at least 20. It was fine, though. Carol alone was going to go through most of them. Her shapeshifting abilities required a highly advanced metabolism, after all.

"So... Lewie, are you having girl problems?" Carol smiles as she glances at HK and then back at you. "If you had to resort getting a Doll, then you should've just come to me first!"

"It's not like that, Carol." You groan. "It's work related."

"Oh! An office perk?" Carol nods as she casually wolfs down an entire ribeye in one gulp. "You're really moving up in the world, huh?"

"I guess." You sigh. You glance at HK, who remains silent as she cuts apart her steak with flawless precision, reducing it down to a series of perfectly proportioned cubes.

"Anyways, have you talked with Mom yet?" Carol asks curiously.

"Of course I did." You nod. "And she aske dme to change jobs, as always."

"She's just worried about you." Carol maintains. "You didn't exactly pick the safest of jobs, you know."

"Yeah, I know." You sigh. "It just gets a bit old, you know?"

"Mom has her reasons, you know." Carol says rather cryptically before shake her head rapidly a bit and brightening up again. "But she did tell you she was planning on coming over to visit sometime, right?"

You freeze.

"She did not tell me that."

"Ohmygosh, was she trying to surprise you?" Carol gasps. "Um, just forget everything I said just then!"

"It doesn't work like that, Carol." You chuckle.

HK remains quiet.

"Um, HK, do you have anything like a parent?" Carol wonders. "I've never actually talked to a Doll or anything."

"My manufacturer is Toha Heavy Industries." HK says simply. "I remain in constant contact with their maintenance server in the event I suffer damage or encounter an issue with my software."

"Wow, so you're like, talking to your parents 24/7!" Carol squeals. "That's so cool!"

HK doesn't respond, as if she can't formulate a proper reply to your sister's honestly harebrained thought processes.

The rest of dinner goes by quickly, as both Carol and HK were fast eaters. As Carol gathers up the plates, she pauses as if something had just occurred to her.

"Oh! If HK is going to be staying with you, where is she going to sleep?"

Huh you didn't think about that. Your apartment was two bedroom, but the second bedroom was commonly reserved for Carol whenever she decided to crash at your place.

"I mean, suppose she can stay in the living room for now." You suggest. "She doesn't really sleep in the conventional way, you know."

"That just won't do!" Carol harumphs. "I've got no problem sharing my room with her! It'll be like having a little sister!"

You see HK's eyebrow raise up ever so slightly.

Yeah, well, you still weren't leaving her alone with Carol, at least for now. She at least could still use the second bedroom whenever Carol wasn't around.

"She can just crash in my room for the night." You say. "It'll be fine."

"Oh, okay! That works too!" Carol says happily.

"Anyways, I should crash right now. Lucina kept us out late, and I still got work tomorrow." You yawn. "Come on, HK, I'll show you around."

"Nighty night!" Carol chimes as she heads over to the living room and turns on the TV.

"So, uh, this my bedroom." You say as you open the door. It was rather spartan, being just the bed, desk, and computer station. You honestly didn't spend that much time in here so you didn't feel a need to decorate. The large glass window on the far wall gave a commanding view of Raccoon City, the city lights twinkling in the darkness.

"I will enter sleep mode then to perform a self diagnostic." HK says as she starts walking over to the corner of the room.

"Wait, what you doing?" You blink.

"Going to sleep mode here is the most efficient use of space, and minimizes the chances of you physically colliding with my body." HK explains.

"You're not going to use the bed?" You blink.

"Going into sleep mode in a bed provides no significant material benefit over going into sleep mode while standing." HK continues. "In fact, it would reduce my response time in case of an enemy ambush by 3.2 seconds. An unacceptable margin of error. In addition, my presence may inconvenience you and affect your sleeping pattern, thereby reducing your combat efficiency tomorrow."

Sheesh, she was pretty blunt when she wanted to be.

"I don't mind sharing the bed with you, HK. It's a king size anyways, so there's plenty of space." You shrug.

"If that's your request." HK nods as she suddenly begins taking her jacket off.

"Whoa, wait, what are you doing?" You blink.

"Keeping my clothes on in a bed would be inefficient." HK says simply.

You got the feeling you didn't quite fully think this through...

---

Thankfully, the bed was spacious enough so that both you and HK wouldn't be tossing and turning into each other. But... it still felt weird. HK was completely still. She didn't breath or snore, or toss or turn in her sleep like a living person. She was dead still, like a corpse.

Were regular Dolls like this too, or was this just another side effect of HK's programming or lack thereof? Just another "unnecessary" feature?

You push those questions to the back of your mind as you try to get some sleep.

---

The next morning, you wake up to see the other end of the bed empty, HK having already woken up. You yawn and crawl out of bed, just as HK returns.

"Carol left two hours ago. She had a photo shoot to attend." HK reports. "She made breakfast before leaving."

Yeah, Carol was a big name fashion model, which wasn't surprising given how she could literally change her own appearance on the fly. She knew exactly how to make herself look juuuust right.

"What is our itinerary for today?" HK asks as you pull a shirt on.

I'd think that they'd be sort of green, but would have a theoretical idea of how things work out of combat. AR15 and SOPPO would probably have been more adaptable to new things. HK on the other hand is pretty much a sheltered kid that we need to keep eyes on.

You quickly scarf down breakfast. Homemade donuts courtesy of Carol. She really was far too good for you. HK helps herself to a bite, but doesn't really "eat" much more than that.

You both take the elevator down the apartment complex garage where your care is waiting and you both get in.

You turn out, but go the other way you normally go.

"You're taking us in the opposite direction of the optimum path."HK observes. "Is there a reason for this?"

"Figured I'd give you the full tour of the place." You explain. "You know, give you the lay of the land."

"I see." HK nods.

You take a brief stop in front of the RCPD headquarters, where you were being held in just yesterday. Seemed like a good idea to show HK one of the places she'd likely end up in multiple times in this line of work.

Upon first glance, the RCPD headquarters building looked like one of those old fashioned castles, built out of stone and brick. In fact, you heard that it was originally a museum before being converted into a police station. However, what wasn't immediately visible from the front was the more modern additions built up over the years. This front facade in fact hid a sprawling and high tech complex. A useful base for Umbrella to enforce their corporate law in the city, after all.

"My GPS registers that structure as the Raccoon City Police Department Headquarters." HK recites. "What is our reason to be here?"

"Just to give you a proper look at the place." You explain to her. "Being a Hunter means you'll sometimes be at odds with the law, and that means sometimes we'll get uh... 'picked up' by the police and taken here."

"You mean arrested." HK points out.

"Okay, arrested." You concede. "We've got some contacts in the force and our clients usually handle all the legal stuff, but it's best to avoid getting brought here as much as possible. Understand?"

"Understood. Avoid apprehension." HK nods.

"Damn, we're cutting it close now." You grimace as you check your clock. "All right, we're heading back to the office."

"Roger." HK nods.

It's only a short drive to the office, and when you and HK enter, you feel that something about the place is... different. Like, there was some sort of glistening sheen on all of the surfaces. You could even catch the scent of air freshener.

Continuing on to the main operations room, and you immediately saw why.

"What did you do to my desk?!" Hank yells incredulously at G, who remained unphased by his outburst.

"I observed that your desk was laid out in an inefficient manner and rearranged all of the items to be more easily accessible." She explains. "Do you not like this new arrangement?"

"Yes! I mean, no! I mean, you should have asked me, first!" Hank grumbles.

"My last recorded command was 'do what you want', so I exercised my independent judgment." G continues.

"All right, all right, I get it." Hank groans. "Just... grab a coffee. Black."

"As you wish, Master." G does a little bow and marches off.

"Jeez, these dolls, can you believe them?" Hank shakes his head. "Has yours been giving you trouble, too?"

"No, she's been pretty well behaved so far." You shrug. "We get any offers so far?"

"Oh yeah, and the Boss really wants you to start moving. THI wants their combat data and part of the partnership deal is that we provide it to them."

"Then show me what you got."

Hank tosses you a data drive.

"It's all on there." He says. "Good luck out there."

Mission: WRANGLING
Threat Level: Low

Environmental activists broke into an Umbrella organ farm and released all of the organ incubators being stored inside. They are currently loose in the countryside. While the incubators themselves are docile, there remains significant risk of collateral damage and liability. Umbrella has authorized the termination of low priority incubators and the safe recovery of high priority incubators.

---

Mission: PROTECTION
Threat Level: Medium

A courier has been tasked with transporting an important item to the Raccoon City Airport. The courier and the item will require protection from potential theft and corporate espionage. The cargo is high priority. Courier is expendable.

Mission: EXTERMINATION
Threat Level: High

There are reports of an unregistered BOW loose in the Arklay Mountains. Eliminate the target and determine its point of origin if possible.

"All right, we'll take the protection job." You tell Hank.

"All right, courier's set to leave in two hours. That should give you enough time to get situation." Hank says as he leans back in his chair.

"Looks like your'e already getting comfortable in the desk." You crack a grin.

"Ah, shut up, I'm still pissed I'm getting sidelined like this." Hank grunts.

"Your coffee, Master." G says politely as she sets a steaming hot mug down on the desk.

"Doesn't look all bad." You laugh. "See you later, Hank."

"Yeah yeah, you go on and have fun." Hank grumbles.

"Where are we going now?" HK asks as you stride past her.

"The Armory, where else?" You say. "Gotta to get equipped for the mission, right?"

"Of course." HK nods.

The office armory wasn't anything too special. Your company was large enough to have a fairly large and diverse selection of conventional small arms, but not large enough to have the truly top of the line or exotic equipment the megcorps themselves had access too. Still, a good old fashioned gun was often times enough to get the job done.

HK immediately gravitates to one of the standard assault rifles, picking it out of the rack and collecting the necessary attachments and ammunition. Looks like she already knew what she wanted.

You, on the other hand...

Actually, like HK, you preferred to have a versatile weapon as your primary. After all, you were never quite sure what you would run into on a hunt, so it was important to be prepared.

You pick out a standard assault rifle like HK, and get straight to the attachments. The nice thing about ARs was that they were infinitely customizable, allowing for a variety of uses. You've taken quite a liking to using...

DMR: The designated marksman rifle variant adds a high powered scope and higher velocity ammunition, allowing for more efficient engagement of targets at larger distances. However, precision comes at the cost of rate of fire, and the DMR cannot fire full automatic.

GRENADIER: An underbarrel 40mm grenade launcher packs a powerful punch in a compact package. Useful against large packs of smaller BOWs, large individual BOWs, or knocking down obstacles. Not particularly effective in close range due to the launcher's minimum range.

AUTOMATIC RIFLE: A reinforced construction and larger magazine turn the automatic rifle into a portable machine gun, able to lay down a hail of bullets in a short amount of time. However, all of this rate of fire comes at the cost of accuracy and precision.

You slap on the 40mm grenade launcher underneath the barrel of your rifle to put into the grenadier configuration. Never hurt to bring a little boom with you.

HK, on the other hand, seemed to be outfitting her rifle for full automatic fire.

"You sure you can handle that?" You ask.

"I can automatically datalink with the rifle, and my body is built to be a stable firing platform. Accuracy and recoil are not issues for me." HK explains calmly.

Ah, well, you suppose that was certainly useful.

You check your watch. Account for traffic, you would have about an hour to get to the rendezvous.

"All right, first day of work for you." You grin as you grab a few extra mags and slot them onto your belt. "You ready?"

"I was built to be ready." HK replies. "Let us commence with the mission."

Straight the point, huh? Well, this was going to be a simple milk run though.

Maybe.

Hopefully.
