General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.
Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

Pokemon:
Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roserade)
Dice (Croconaw)
Sorbet (Vulpix)

Location: Akaneki, the Fighting Gym

Recently: You battled a bully pokemon hand to hand, explored your values in nature, and arrived at the Fighting Gym.

“I’m too excited.” You confess. You’re not the stereotypical battler type of trainer, but the enthusiasm from Laki, Hana, and the gym itself seems to put you in the right mood.

Laki's head suddenly turns towards an old man with a spear.

“I didn’t know Kaikane was here.” Laki says in amazement. “I thought he was going to join the elite four in another region.”

You, Hana, and Abigail don't have any idea who that is, but it's clear the others do.

“He came back.” The fighter explains to her. “He didn’t find it fulfilling, he says. He’s a local legend, sure, but he’s also the reason challenges have been down lately. Nobody wants to face someone like him.”

“Has anyone beaten him?” Hana asks as a little fear begins to creep into her eyes.

“A few. It’s not often, though. Depends which pokemon he uses..” He shrugs. “I think we’ll have a huge rush of challenges for leadership spots when he retires. If he retires.” He leans in. “That’s why I’m training to beat the up-and-comers instead of the current leaders.”

“Smart.” Abigail compliments.

“Cowardly, but smart.” Laki adds.

“Yeah, well, you challenge him if you’re so confident.” His voice has more of an amused edge than anything hostile. “That’s why you’re here, right?”

“How does the challenging work, exactly?” You ask as Laki gets lost in contemplation. Her eyes narrow and she keenly observes the old man with the spear.

“Well, it’s all pretty casual. You three can just go declare your challenge and three of the six gym leaders will figure out who among them will take you on, or you can challenge them directly. Either way works. Depends on how brave you are. I recommend researching them and choosing based on your strengths, but hey, I’m just a low ranker.” He’s a lot less formal than the Fighting Temple. This whole place has a more relaxed atmosphere. People just seem to self-organize as needed and otherwise do their own thing.

“What do you two think?” You ask Hana and Laki.

“I-I don’t want to lose it for us, but I also don’t want to shy away from a challenge you two are willing to take on.” She says noncommittally.

“You know I’m alright with whatever you choose.” Laki says. She’s been very deferential to you lately. “But if it were just me taking on the gym, I’d choose the hardest fighters.”

“Let’s dive into it.” You tell the man, and the girls.

“Okay.” Hana nods in determination. “Ready, Togepi?”

The fierce little egg pokemon makes an almost unnerving battle squeak.

Laki smiles. “You’re feeling daring today. After taking on that pokemon, I can’t blame you.” The impressed tone in her voice gives you a nice confidence boost.

Abigail looks like she wants to make a joke at your expense, but Laki’s words seem to make her rethink it. Maybe it’s your imagination, but it feels like she’s impressed, too.

“Alright, Cutiefly. You can go back in your ball. I’ll get you when it’s over.” Keira says. Her little flying pokemon vanishes in a flash of light.

You find yourself and your pokemon walking to the center of the gym. You’re not really sure exactly how to do this challenge, but you guess you just sort of announce it. Your girls follow you and wait for you to take the initiative.

“We’re here to challenge the gym for a badge. We’d like to do a triple battle!” You say as loud as you can without being disruptive. A few heads turn, then more. You see a group in the corner begin to talk among themselves and look at you.

“Yes! I am all about blind challenges.” A boisterous, huge guy appears. He’s got a chin made of steel and a voice like gravel, and a chest like a barrel. He’s handsome, tall, and very strong looking. He’s also got a youthful, friendly aura to him. He seems friendly. “I’m Ailano, and I like your style!”

“Um, thanks.” You say, surprised at his energy.

“And I’m Pono-Ai. You can call me Po for short.” A short, awkward, slightly chubby girl says. “I’ll accept.” She’s seems a little demure, but that could just seem like that because she’s next to that Ailano. She certainly doesn’t look like she fits in, but she looks like she tries hard to. Her Sawk nods. Her voice shines with friendliness.

Ailano makes a megaphone with his hands. “Jabo! Come on in here! We need a third.”

The man called Jabo reluctantly closes his book. He’s a mainlander! Not from where you’re from, but close enough that the islanders probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Tall, with chiseled features, and sunken, dark eyes. He methodically puts his book away, takes off his reading glasses, and walks over. He’s almost robotic in his precise and clean movements. “Greetings.” His eyes quickly take in and assess your pokemon. You seem like a secondary concern. He has a Hitmonlee at his side.

Everyone exchanges the proper bows. You didn’t even need to watch the others for your cue this time.

“Nice to meet you all.” Hana says.

“Yeah.” You add in. They seem nice. “I’m excited to challenge your gym.”

“Thanks.” The large Ailano says. “But it’s not our gym. It’s the island’s.”

“We’re bound by the same rules as everyone else here, and any respect for our positions instead of us as individuals is misplaced.” Jabo adds.

“Let’s all do our best!” Po manages to get out. She reminds you a little of Hana, but not because she’s a little socially awkward and clearly forcing herself. There’s something else there that you can’t quite put your finger on.

“Alright! Can we start now?” You ask.

They all look to each other to see if anyone has any objections. None are voiced.

“Looks good, little dude.” Ailano says.

Jabo’s tired but piercing eyes come over you. “Choose your spots and we’ll begin.” They disperse to their own spots.

It’s a long, thing battle area. You’ll only have a small area where you can let out and retrieve pokemon from, and your positions will be staggered between your team and the others.

Po pushes herself to speak, but her voice comes out loud and clear. “Each side can have three pokemon out at a time, with a total of six pokemon used per side. You can have two for each of you, or one for two of you and four under one trainer, or whatever else you want.”

“So, any plans?” Laki asks as the three of you move to your side and figure out who is going here.

“Whoever has their back to the border will be in the most danger of a ring-out, but whoever is on the opposite side will get the most immediate focus from opposing Pokémon, since they’ll have the undivided attention of the opponent with their back to the border.” You think. “I think Wailord should have his back to the border since he’ll be the hardest to shove out, and that way he won’t have to try to maneuver around at all.”

“You put some thought into that.” Hana says.

“Thanks.” You say before continuing. “Bella resists fighting, and I think so does Togepi? But Bella recovers health better and is bigger and more evolved, so I say she should take the opposite side, leaving Togepi in the center. I’m just a little worried about pocket moves like fire punch, Ice punch, or poison Jab, so if you think you can hit our Pokémon with Soak before they get hit, I think it’s worth a try. What do you two think?”

“I was thinking of Wailord in the middle.” Laki says. “Wailord and another pokemon can gang up on one of their strikers, and one of our tankier pokemon can tough it out and just defend until we finish up.”

“That seems hard for the tanky pokemon we choose.” Hana says.

“It is, but if we do it right, it could work great. But Soft-Hand’s plan and talk about different types of attacks they can use make me think his plan is better. It’s more defensive, anyway. I’m alright with that, unless you want to use my plan.”

“Well, I’ll trust your judgement.” Hana says to you both.

Laki looks to you as well. She’s waiting on you to choose which position to take. "I'll start with Wailord and go at the top, unless you want it." She eyes the Hitmonlee. "I hope I can get to fight that one though. I know all their weaknesses."

The colors on the gym floor seem to indicate that you’re the red team.

Jabo is at the bottom, Po is in the middle, and Ailano is near the top.

Why must I be at work when there is Pokemon quest to do?
>>
You look at the arena. You need to make your mind up quick, so you’d better just take in as many quick details as possible.

Jabo and his Hitmonlee take the bottom spot, against the edge of the strip. Then there’s a blank area for one of you to choose, then Po and her Sawk. Ailano release a Heracross close to the top.

Woah! It looks just like dads!

You shake your head. Don’t get distracted.

“I’ll take the middle spot.” You tell the girls. You want to be in a position to be flexible. Playing it by ear seem to be your style.

“I’ll go top with Wailord.” Laki says quietly.

“I’ll uh, go bottom.” Hana mumbles. “I don’t mind that position one bit.”

“What sort of moves does Togepi know?” You ask Hana at the last second. “I only remember Metronome.”

“Um, uh, I-” She stumbles as she’s put on the spot. “Yawn, Sweet Kiss, Charm, Growl, uh, Follow Me. Best-”

She runs out of time as Kaikane, the guy with the spear, steps forward. “We have a challenge to our gym. A sacred battle to prove the worth of holding our badge, signifying skill and honor. This gym is home to all warriors of all places, all nations, and all belief systems, so long as they act with honor within our code. Be truthful, but strong, and be upright. Be everything you can be to represent the Hero type.”

Hero type?

“Begin!” He shouts as he moves off the arena.

Woah! They don’t give much time to think. You see Laki and Hana quickly scramble to get their pokemon out. You’d better do the same. Who are you starting with in the middle?

“Belladonna! Go!” You point and she leaps onto the battle area. She’s ready and eager to battle, but she does seem a bit wary of the Heracross nearby. But Laki’s Wailord puts her at ease.

“Stay strong, Togepi.” Hana says with questionable confidence in her voice. She’s hiding it well, but you can read her. Togepi seems to be entirely unconcerned for it’s safety.

“Heracross, take out that grass type before we’re drowning in powders!”

“Sawk! Bulk Up!”

“Strategy Delta-Q, Hitmonlee.”

Well, they aren’t wasting time at all! You’ve got to act fast! You’ve heard their moves and that gives you an advantage, but they’ll be acting quickly and you might not have the speed to counter that.

“Belladonna! Leech seed as many opponents as you can!” You instruct. She moves first to fire against Heracross and then the others, but her shots look like they’re going wide.

Hitmonlee stats off with a very strong Mega Kick to the back of togepi. The poor little round pokemon didn’t see it coming, and is sent flying with great force towards Sawk.

Sawk watches as the little egg rolls right under its feet as it bulks up.

“Togepi!” Hana shouts.

While that happens, Heracross is zooming in at Belladonna. It’s Aerial Ace! But it’s sloppy. The bug pokemon manages to steer itself back in the path of one of the Leech Seeds before it connects the move. It’s super effective, but the disruption mid flight and sloppy technique seems to have taken the edge off.

Wailord tries to hit Heracross with Soak, but the move misses and hits Belladonna.

“Sorry!” Laki shouts. She looks terrified at accidentally hitting Belladonna, even if it’s a move that doesn’t do damage. Belladonna’s type is now water, but there are worse things that could happen. She looks choked up about it though. You suspect Laki’s reaction has more to do with her history with Belladonna than strategy. Laki is rattled.

“Umm, uh, Wish!” She shouts to Togepi as it pushes itself up. It tries the move, and it seems unclear if it works until you see a little ball of energy fly up from it. That will heal Togepi if it survives the next few seconds. That first kick from Hitmonlee was brutal.

But Hitmonlee seems to be leaving Togepi for Sawk and heading towards Belladonna. It’s just using it’s long springy legs to step over everyone!

A tiny bit of energy leaves Heracross and and is absorbed by Belladonna. That and the Wish are a nice consolation to a rough start.

“Mega Drain!” You shout to Belladonna. “Go for Sawk!”

“Sawk?” Hana looks confused. Especially given that she’d have to aim between Hitmonlee’s legs. But since those legs are so stretched because it’s stepping over everything, and because Belladonna is so well practiced at these sorts of moves, she easily pulls it off. Sawk roars as it’s struck from behind and by surprise. A large wad of green energy is extracted from it.

“Rolling Kick on that Roserade, Hitmonlee.” Jabo instructs coldly. “Keep it locked down.”

The pokemon contracts it’s legs in and begins to fall, but it transforms the fall into a rolling kick and strikes Belladonna right on the head as she’s finishing drinking up that delicious health.

Huh, that hurt, but not as much as you’d expect even though her type is Water now. Her defense seems higher than usual. Her muscles seem a little more defined, too. Maybe she got some extra power from absorbing from Sawk after it used Bulk Up.

Sawk recovers from it’s shock quickly and uses Low Sweep on Togepi. The poor little pokemon is knocked to the side, rolling close to the edge of the thin battle area. But it recovers before rolling off. And boy does Togepi look angry. Very hurt, but angry.

Heracross is next. It’s ignoring Wailord as it leaps back, and fires a stream of Bullet Seed at her. “It’s a Water Type now. Don’t forget the fundamentals.” Ailano reminds his team.

And those seeds explode against her back. The majority of them hit! She’s sent stumbling forward, confused and bewildered by the Grass attack hurting her so.

“W-Wailord!” Laki tries to pull herself together, but seeing Belladonna shot in the back like that, when she’s the one that changed Belladonna’s type, has really affected her. “Whirlpool!”

“What?” Almost everyone reacts the same way.

Almost half the arena is sucked into a swirling whirlpool. Heracross is swept away first, followed by Belladonna. Both pokemon are being swung to the outside of the battle area, but aren’t quite there yet. At least the water type Bella is afflicted with makes it a lot easier for her. Hitmonlee is just barely far enough that he’s able to stay where he is.

“Togepi! Use Yawn!” Hana instructs.

Togepi charges at Sawk with Double Edge instead, though. Thanks to the distractions, it hits, but due to its general weakness in comparison it’s not that strong. Still, that Sawk looks surprised and weakened a bit more.

Togepi would risk being out if Wish didn’t land right after. “Okay Togepi. I know you’re mad but we have to work together. Please.”

This is not a lucky day.

Belladonna and Heracross fight against the pull of the whirlpool. The energy from Leech Seed and the health she gets from her Black Sludge help perk her up. She should be able to fight the whirlpool enough to stay in the arena, as long as she’s not knocked down or something.

Laki pulls on her hair under the stress of causing yet another difficulty for Bella.

“Bella, swing around and then unload on Heracross!” You command, as the others all shout to their pokemon.

She takes only half a second to realize what you mean. She lets herself get swept away. But she almost goes too far on the outside. She swims hard to get on the inside track and practically hug Wailord. There isn’t much room otherwise. Still, she manages the difficult maneuver without slipping outside the battle area, if just barely.

“Heracross, watch out!” It’s trainer shouts as Belladonna comes around and unloads with both arms. The momentum gives it some extra kick. It’s an almost poetic recreation of the moment before, except this time it’s Heracross reeling from a machine-gun attack in the back. It’s not very effective, but the extra punch and surprise, on top of Belladonna’s increased Attack, helps to make up for that.

“Hitmonlee, start on that Wailord. It’s trainer is unpredictable.” Jabo commands cooly.

“Sawk, finish the Togepi.” Po commands with a strange and growing bloodlust in her voice. “Out of the arena or out of consciousness. Hit it hard!’

“Togepi be careful!” Hana shouts in a panic upon hearing that.

“Heracross! Get your revenge on that Roserade!”

Hitmonlee strikes with a powerful and merciless High Jump Kick on Wailord. The long legged pokemon has no problem stepping over the shorter pokemon, but has to put in real effort to make that leap. Wailord moans in pain but doesn’t move. The kick seemed sloppy. Sloppy enough that Hitmonlee has to stand in the Whirlpool to avoid falling back. It struggles against the flow.

Sawk unleashes a horrifically brutal Close Combat on the small Togepi. A painful rapid series of blows penetrate deep into the small pokemon. When it’s over, Sawk holds it’s limp victim up by the arm, examining it. It’s tossed aside.

“Heracross! Close Combat as well!” It’s trainer commands as Belladonna comes around again from the Whirlpool.

Belladonna is caught by surprise when the Heracross leaps at her, pummeling her all over. It’s a critical hit! Her momentum works against her for the first blow as he comes in hard and just does not let up. Blow after blow rains down over her for a split second that feels like hours. Her limp body swirls around in the whirlpool and out of the fight. She looks like she’s almost about to wake up before that happens, but the sludge that once helped her is now draining her. She faints.

You hear a smashing sound to the side. You turn to see Laki kicking over a training dummy in frustration before turning back to the fight. “Wailord! Surf!” Laki commands. Despite the anger she displayed, her voice is cracking with worry and guilt.

You remember how Wailord learned how to aim Surf selectively like some of your pokemon. That could be a major asset here. The water rises up and comes crashing down on her opponents. Heracross is hit first, but the other two get a small taste after as well.

Heracross is swept back into the whirlpool too. It looks to be in very, very rough shape. Hitmonlee is a little hurt, but not too much so. Sawk is pretty roughed up, but not in the dangerous situation Heracross is in.

“Good job, Belladonna.” You say as you retrieve her.

Laki watches with a pained expression. “I’m sorry.”

But before you can say anything, it’s Togepi that draws everyone’s attention. The small egg gives Sawk a Sweet Kiss, confusing it. It’s dropped, hitting the ground hard. Still, Togepi has a surprisingly spiteful, driven spirit.

“Okay Togepi, good job, but I think it’s time to recall you.” Hana suggests. Togepi seems not to care for that suggestion.

While that’s happening, you think on who to use next. You’ve got to move fast. Despite being roughed up, the other side has not given you any breathing room. But the good news is that they all look very low on steam in general.

“Togepi, no.” Hana’s voice is firm and low. She retrieves the pokemon against its will. “I’m sorry, but you’re too beat up to continue. Especially if you won’t listen.”

Wow. She’s had a lot of fear coming into this, but she’s still level headed. Even Ailano seems to rethink keeping his Heracross in since it’s also so beat up. He fails to do it, though.

Laki, on the other hand, is struggling to get herself together. She takes a deep breath, calms down just a little, and takes a second to think.

“Go Dice!” You shout as you point. He rushes out onto the field, growling on his way. You rarely see him worked up, but he does get like this when his fellow pokemon are knocked out. He’s making a straight line for Heracross.

“Go Chinchou!” Hana shouts as she throws out her next pokemon.

Dice, growling and savage, quickly closes the distance between it and Heracross

“We can still win.” Laki says to nobody in particular. “Don’t worry, I’ll make up for it.”

“It’s not your fault.” Hana says. “And this is supposed to be fun, remember?”

Laki looks annoyed for half a second, but it passes quickly and she relaxes a little. “Right.”

“Quick Guard!” Po commands Sawk. The martial arts pokemon prepares to stop any moves like Quick Attack that might be used by the new Pokemon on the scene. Sawk instead gets confused and trips. Po looks pretty embarrassed, despite you thinking that was a perfectly reasonable idea.

“Dragon Dance.” You command Dice. Despite his snarling and feral rush, he listens. Just in time too, as Hitmonlee unleashes a powerful Focus Blast that barely misses! That pokemon has been cycling through some very powerful attacks. It has to be wearing down by now.

“Water Gun.” Laki commands Wailord. “Aim carefully.” But the slow pokemon takes awhile to warm that attack up.

“Reversal, Heracross!” It’s trainer commands. “Take out that Wailord!”

The terribly injured Heracross goes absolutely wild on poor Wailord. The colossal size disparity makes no difference. Seemingly defying physics, the powerful Heracross pummels and beats on the kind and gentle giant. The groans echo out and break your heart. Also your eardrums a little.

“Hang in there Wailord!” Laki says. “It’s going to be alright.”

Wailord hangs on, and to everyone’s surprise, is alright when its over. Terribly hurt, but alright. Unfortunately for Heracross, there’s just too much of Wailord to beat up with just one move, even if that move was absurdly powerful.

“Chinchou! Now!” Hana commands. Her small electrical water pokemon runs up and hits Sawk with a Spark. It’s not able to get around it, but it looks like she’s planning on going through it.

The attack hits, but Chinchou bounces off the strong pokemon. It wasn’t a great attack. Still, Sawk is slowing down considerably from the all the damage adding up and all the powerful attacks they’ve been using.

“Water Gun. Finish it off!” Laki tells Wailord. It’s not the strongest attack in it’s arsenal, but it doesn’t have to be. The stream connects with Heracross’s left shoulder, but that’s all it needs. The bug pokemon comes to an ungraceful crash into the swirling water.

Dice finishes his Dragon Dance just in time to arrive at the knocked out bug. He snarls and snaps his teeth at the pokemon that knocked out Belladonna, but manages to resist the urge to attack a downed foe.

Hitmonlee looks exhausted from all the extremely powerful attacks it’s used, even if its only moderately damaged. Sawk has a bit more energy, but it’s health seems lower. Dice is fresh, with increased attack, speed, and evasiveness. Chinchou is fresh too.

Laki grins. “I told you. We can still win this.”

Laki grins. “I told you. We can still win this.”

She’s right. You’re not winning now, but you’re finding yourself in a position where you might be able to build some real momentum. Dice just pulled off a fantastic Dragon Dance, Chinchou is fresh, and Wailord’s Whirlpool and Surf can work well with the two other Water pokemon on your side. Wailord is in rough shape, though. It took a few blows and a full powered Reversal. Any other pokemon who took that much punishment would be down.

Hitmonlee and it’s springy legs allow it to move fairly far along the narrow battle strip. It’s only moderately hurt, but it’s been unleashing some very powerful attacks and you can see the exhaustion on it’s strange body-face.

Sawk is cutting off Chinchou from any future ranged attacks now. Po, Sawk’s trainer, looks very committed to that. It’s clear on her normal head-face.

“Go Pangoro!” Ailano shouts.

“Any strategy ideas?” Hana asks. Your group is far enough that she can say that without fear of the other side hearing.

You think. You’ll have to sum it up quickly and speak in broad strokes if you have an idea.

“I have an idea.” Laki says quickly. “Wailord has a berry, so we can use Rest, then we’ll just push down the length of the arena until we force the other team in a corner. If Dice gets on top when we start moving, he can guard against any of their pokemon trying to get over or around. By the time we meet Chinchou, it should have a chance to slip over to Wailord. Or...”

“Or Chinchou might already be knocked out by then.” Hana finishes the sentence. “It’s asking a lot from the other two.”

“It is.” Laki agrees. “Any better ideas?”

I trust you guys to win this battle. Make use of the fact that Wailord produces a shitton of water and we have three Water-types on the field right now. I think it's better if we can keep Wailord alive and well for the longest time possible. And most importantly, have fun!

“I like Laki’s plan.” You say.

“No pressure on it working then.” Laki makes a quick joke. That sounds more like something Hana would say, especially with the face and tone, but you suppose they’ve been rubbing off on each other.

Hana grins nervously. “Okay, we’ll do it. I’ll try Thunder Wave. I know it won’t do much against Hitmonlee, but it can help against Sawk.”

“It’ll work on Hitmonlee.” Laki corrects Hana.

“But...Jane’s Hitmonlee-”

“Has a different ability. I did a lot of research on it. That Hitmonlee is Reckless, no doubt about it.”

You feel like you should have known that. You’ve done a little studying on Fighting types, but that was only very brief. While you ponder, Gobble takes up a fighting stance and cheers on Dice. The others join in, minus Belladonna. That seems to calm Dice down a bit, but he's still visibly furious. It makes both you and Pangoro a little nervous.

Dice almost foams at the mouth on seeing his new opponent. Pangoro opens it’s arms wide and challenges the smaller water pokemon. The whirlpool is still in effect, but it’s weakened to the point of not sweeping either away. It could if they got knocked down, though.

Laki looks to you. She’s going to have Wailord use Rest, then plow over the arena. You and Hana need to keep the opponents busy.

“Wailord! Use Rest!” Laki commands. But her Wailord is slow. It could easily be finished.

“Taunt that Croc!” Pangoro’s trainer shouts, looking worried at the Wailord, but still more concerned about Dice. He seems to recognize Dice as more than just a mid-evolution pokemon. He’s a skilled Fighting Gym leader, and can probably recognize serious posture.

“Dice! Dragon Dance again!” You command. You clench your fist and hope that Dice will be fast enough to pull it off before that lands.

And it’s amazing. Dice, despite of, or maybe because of, his furious anger at someone knocking out Belladonna, performs a very quick, very powerful Dragon Dance.

Hitmonlee is next. “Wide Guard!” It’s trainer shouts. “Protect against area attacks!”

It’s a smart move to try, considering that Wailord used Surf before, Chinchou has some area attacks, and it’s reasonable to assume any of the other pokemon can selectively aim Surf.

“Sawk, Retaliate!”

“Ah! Chinchou! Discharge!” Hana panics, abandoning her plan for Thunderwave. Still, Discharge is a great move too.

Sawk delivers a devastating blow to Chinchou. The poor small pokemon is sent back so far that it almost flies off the bottom of the battle area. But it didn’t look like it hurt as bad as it could have been. In fact, it looks like the blow was a lot more ‘push’ than a hard strike. Chinchou retaliates with a wide ranging Discharge. But the super long legs from Hitmonlee kick the electricity away. Just barely.

“How does that even work?” Hana asks in exasperation. She made a mistake, but you can understand why she’d still feel upset.

Wailord finishes Resting and munches it’s hidden berry. You only notice because you were expecting it, though. Wailord is pretending to still be asleep.

The taunt finishes but Dice didn’t seem to notice. It was actually a great Taunt, but Dice looks like a creature possessed. You’re not sure if he even noticed it. His eyes seem strange and his body-, no, his aura, seems different. Dangerous. The remains of the whirlpool come up to just below his eyes as he lowers his body in preparation for what you hope is still a friendly battle.

Dice looks like he can move fast. Really fast. You think he might be able to act twice, or maybe even thrice, in the time it takes the others to act once.

“Dice! Aqua Tail!”

You almost think he didn’t hear you, but then suddenly he, at least according to your eyes, teleports in front of Pangoro. Not only is he right in it’s face before anyone can react, but his tail is already swinging around.

Pangoro is still in mid roar and completely unprepared for what happens next.

It’s a hard, powerful slap. A wallop. A slam. No, none of those words do it justice. The best way you can describe it is just violent. Pangoro is sent reeling back, shocked at the power and strength from Dice. He barely catches himself before falling outside the arena. He’s a half inch away and off balance, and deeply hurt. It’s winded

It does, but not what I was intimating.

What other pokemon that has featured in gobble's quest was a born monster, and when it got upset wrecked face? here's a hint he nearly solo'd an entire elite four team alone. Took a sturdy + Counter move to drop him.

Yeah but Oberon was never a rage monster, that was Levi

“Dice! Push it out and go to your next target.”

Dice complies, leaping up at Pangoro. His powerful legs land on the pokemon’s chest, and there’s a brief moment where they look into each other’s eyes. You can’t see Dice’s eyes, but the fear on Pangoro’s face is clear. Dice could have destroyed him just now, and he knows it.

Dice kicks off hard, sending Pangoro back much farther than anyone was ready for. The huge pokemon almost stumbles back into the far wall. Getting pushed out is a mercy.

It’s now when you finally notice the crowd. There were a few eyes on the match before, but now the whole gym is animatedly cheering and betting and talking strategy. Dice just completely neutralized what seems to be a very strong and well regarded pokemon. You can still see the shock on its face as it holds it’s chest and watches Dice in disbelief.

“Hitmonlee! Foresight!” Jabo shouts, showing emotion for the first time.

Hitmonlee’s gaze turns onto Dice. But even that pokemon shows fear now too as Dice has already leaped up into the air to meet it face to face.

“Sawk! Now! Retaliate again!” Po shouts. “Finish it off so we can focus on Croconaw.”

Sawk swings out at Chinchou. But this time, Hana seems ready. “Ion Deluge!”

Laki grins. She’s impressed with you and Hana. “Smart. Change that attack type to Electric, and absorb it with Volt Absorb.”

Both pokemon seem off their game. You can’t blame them after seeing Dice like that. Still, what unfolds is almost painful to watch.

Retaliate is slow and off target by a pretty wide margin, but Sawk does manage to correct his course at the last second. Chinchou, for it’s part, manages to take the opportunity to act a little faster and fire off the strange electric attack.

But Chinchou doesn’t seem well practiced in the move at all. In fact, this looks like it’s first attempt. Instead of a move that transforms normal type attacks into electric attacks, Chinchou gives a weak, light little jolt to Sawk. Sawk in turn lands the sloppy, yet still very powerful, Retaliate.

Chinchou is knocked out. The pokemon’s eyes and body both roll in different ways until it goes out of bounds and into someone’s foot.

“Chinchou!” Hana shouts. “I’m sorry. I should have been training.” Her apology is directed at her pokemon, but you can tell feels she owes you and Laki something as well.

“It’s fine.” Laki says. “Wailord! Now!”

Wailord leaps, or rather very quickly skooches, forward. It’s not directly attacking anyone, but instead just going as far and fast as possible while being ready to intercept anyone who tries to get over or around it. It comes up right behind Dice and Hitmonlee about a third of the way down the area. If those two weren’t high into the air, you’d be very concerned about their imminent squishing.

“Dice! Use Aqua Tail to-”

Dice moves quicker than your sentence. The Hitmonlee is smacked down hard into the ground.

“...knock Hitmonlee down.” You finish, watching Dice spin gently towards the ground.

“Hana, are you sending another?” Laki asks.

“But, I already lost two.” Hana says.

“I don’t care.” Laki replies quickly, trying not to tear her eyes off the battle. “Snap out of it or I’m sending out one of mine instead.” Her voice is firm, but not hostile. Laki just doesn’t want to waste time on Hana’s feelings. Laki might have a good reason to be curt, but- “Please.” Laki adds in.

“R-right.” Hana gives herself a soft slap on the face. She reaches for her pokeballs, then pauses. She has Glaceon and Tirtouga left. Both of them are weak to Fighting types. You can see the gears turning in her head.

Not that she has gears there.

Huh. You’ve never actually asked about the full extent of her cybernetics. Maybe she has some deeper damage that-

Gah! You refocus. What is Hana looking at? You follow her gaze to Gardevoir and Cubone.

Oh. Cubone actually looks ready and willing to fight, too. Gardevoir’s harder to read because she’s shouting her lungs out alongside a gym member who is also very excited at the match. He doesn’t even notice the talking Gardevoir beside him.

>Encourage Hana to use Gardevoir. They get along
>Encourage Hana to use Cubone

Tangentially as this vote is going nowhere, we need to teach Dice liquidation or waterfall to go with sheerforce. Aquatail is a decent move but it misses out on the boost.

Also aqua jet, which is an amazing move in general.

>>2876306
I dunno, Dice feels like he's going to be a really good physical monster, isn't Liquidation and Waterfall special?
>>
[Seems close. Let's do a revote just to be sure because you never know what factor can change the course of a battle.

Will Herb encourage Hana to use Gardevoir, or one of her own pokemon?]

>Her own
>>
>>2876319
no... neither are special
>>
>>2876327

I’d re-vote for Cubone if I could. But I just don’t think Gardevoir is in the right headspace for a fight right now. She’s feeling like a spectator.

You catch Hana's eye. She has the question right on her face, and you answer. "Use someone you're in sync with. It's a complicated battle."

“Right. Let’s do our best, Tirtouga!” Hana says, tossing out the ball.

Hitmonlee struggles to force itself back awake, but it’s just too out of it. It’s trainer very quickly retrieves it before Wailord rolls it over.

“You’re out first?” Po asks Ailano.

“It looks so.” He replies, impressed.

“Well, you can take one of my pokemon slots if you want.” She offers, looking a little oddly at him. Why does that look seem so familiar? The way her cheeks blush and her eyes dart is just so...oh!

She likes him!

“I saw it too, Soft Hands, but focus.” Laki says, still keeping a steady and watchful gaze on the battle.

“Right.” You say, turning in time to see them release two new pokemon.

“Go Hariyama!” Ailano announces.

“Prepare to battle, Hitmonchan.” Jabo says.

Dice lands in front of Hariyama as Wailord pushes ever closer. He growls as the large pokemon sizes him up.

“Get ready.” Laki warns you and Hana quietly. “It’s going to get wet.”

>Herb walks up to a volcanic den and looks back at Hana as she mans a camera.
>"Wow, lookie at what we found here! A Salazzle den! Now, these here pokemon are notorious for their ability to poison and mollify their predators and prey alike using clouds of toxin and pheromones! But we're not here to hunt them, oh no."
>Herb shuffles a bit, motioning towards the ground and pointing out a small mound of carefully shaped shiny rocks near the entrance. Hana gulps a little and walks closer for the shot.
>"It's their breeding season, where the larger females will seek out multiple mates to create their next clutch. They're an interesting species indeed, being one of the few breeds that naturally create harems. It's believed that they may in fact be the original inspiration for the Akaneki practice! This burrow here seems to have already amassed a small group for herself here, noted by the shiny rocks and stones that mark the barrier of the tunnel, each one noting a different husband."
>Hana visibly shakes, her robotic limb twitching for a second as she gulps and refocuses the camera. Herb gives her a small chuckle and continues, pulling out a small sealed container and opening it to reveal several small diced up pieces of fruit. "Now, let's see if we can maybe convince one of these rascally little lizards to give us a view!"
>He leaves the can near the base and backs up a little, smiling all the while. It doesn't take long for a sharp looking muzzle to poke out, Herb lets out a low "wow" as the large lizard crawls out, showing off its pale white skin as it reaches for can of food. "Well hot dog, that's not just any salazzle, that's a shiny breed! An infamously rare subbreed that just about any trainer would be glad to even get a glimpse at. Heh, guess my luck's turned around for the moment, let's see if it holds up as I go up and have a little chat with it!"
>Hana's eyes widen as she adjusts her lens, this is best part! She pans over his approach, the already glowing smile from Herb almost turns luminescent as he digs into his aura abilities, a calming nature pouring out over the mountainside as he goes up to the confused pokemon and gives it a clawshake. Its face only becomes more confused as he pulls out a pan and sets up a small fire. "hey there, mind having a little chat with me for the viewers back home?"

Random musing hour, since cubone seems like a destined hana mon, our fire type slot is still open.

A salazzle would be awesome, but that seems like a laki type mon. I was thinking that maybe Rapidash or Heatmor could be cool. I know that Heatmor doesn't have the best reputation, but I've always thought it was a clever design, and it gets some awesome mixed attacking moves and great coverage.

Just stuff to think about. Also a tynamo would still be awesome, the Elektross line is great. Although I think polu has one?
>>

I want either a bug (because I love ‘em) or something super weird. Like, y’know how there’s a strong theme of understanding people’s differences and respecting them? Like, what about the really weird Pokémon, like Staryu. It doesn’t even have a face, justa big ol’ gem.

Or do something outside of what the games allow, like a Shellder that evolved with a Slowpoke but then the tail got cut off (which canonically turns the Slowbro back into a Slowpoke, and the tail regrows) but now you’ve got this weird lonely Shellder that wants to bite a new tail. Maybe Dice’s? And it’s like, it lets you use 2 Pokémon at once but only counts them as one.
>>
>>2881177
I love staryu, it's my favorite water type, but repeat typing are a no no. As far as something really weird I'd love Baltoy or maybe Venonat
>>
>>2881215
I’d like to see what Herb could train an Unown to do.
>>
>>2881249
I don't, a gimmick mon is sadly always a gimmick. Unown is too simple
>>
I think a Ghost or a Ground Mon is the way to go. Maybe even both since I think Sandygast is cool. We'd need to find the Shadow Ball TM since they don't get any good special ghost moves through learning. I think any Ghost Pokemon would be good really though. Same thought with any Ground mon.
