The world ends in three days, or so proclaims Miku, the newly self-appointed doomsayer of the club. By the start of next week, the Student Council President Hanako is fully expecting an accomplishment of any kind, proof that the club funds are being wasted away on frivolous things—which they are. And for some inexplicable reason, four days have passed with the Occult Club doing little more than gathering information and doing nothing otherwise.

Though, yesterday had ended in an event you’d rather forget about. What a dead end that was.

So, you find yourself called for emergency meeting by Miku, the club president, sitting around the large table that’s firmly planted in the center of the room, and littered atop it are plenty of snacks to help wash away the apprehension and nervousness. You don’t find yourself in the mood for it, though, and neither does Hinami, the occult expert of the club.

Anxious, Miku plants her hands on the table noisily and groans. She complains, “Where the heck is Nemuri?”

“Still taking her test, probably,” you reply, fidgeting with a bottle of soda. “Why don’t we get started? She can catch up later.”

“You’re right; we don’t have time to waste here! The Occult Club’s Mega Disaster Emergency Meeting starts now!” she announces, her hand shooting into the air and then dropping down, as if signaling the start of a race. “Any ideas?”

You immediately reply, “Yes, we can make booklets and call them mini-grimoires. They’ll be focused on a specific thing like charms or cataloguing interesting places. That way, we won’t have to make an actual book, because I don’t even know how to begin doing that. With this, we’ll at least have something to show to Hanako.” You finish that short on breath, happy that you got that out of your system. Going to Aya is the last thing on your mind; you’d be happy if you never saw her again. Ever.

Much cheerier than the last time you saw her, Hinami nods her head in agreement. “I like it! It’s simple, so I don’t believe we’ll have any troubles with it.”

Miku crosses her arms and puts on a troubled face. “But how are we going to make a book?”

And to that, you answer, “Can’t be that hard. I looked it up online, and it seems doable. Paper, cardboard, and glue—it’s like some primary school arts and crafts project.”

“I, uh,” she replies, hesitant, “Gonna leave that to you, then.”

“Ah,” Hinami speaks up, “What write about first? I wonder, what’s the most impressive thing we can write about...?”

The most difficult question.

“Why don’t we do something on luck? We can put things like the charms or the places we’ve visited,” you suggest, “Luck is the most powerful force in the world, after all.”

Miku smirks, “It’s kinda all over the place, but we can definitely tie it in with that as a common theme. And it’s definitely better than demon summoning. I’m for it! Hinami, what do you think?”

“I like it too,” she says, “What about Nemuri? Maybe... we should wait for her.”

“I’m here,” a familiar voice calls out. Nemuri had entered the club room, silently sliding in. “I passed it, I think. Thanks everyone.” She brings her hand up to show something—her charm. “I managed to not give up halfway, yay,” she says, monotone.

Cheering, Miku says, “Congratulations!” Within an instant, she brings Nemuri up to speed, the gears in her head turning already in attempt to plan what’ll be written down.

Hinami asks, “Nemuri, I think you mentioned one time you were a writer?”

Hearing this, she blushes a little. “Not really. I write cell phone novels,” she replies, and then she quickly adds, “And they’re not that good.”

Miku says, “I bet it’s better anything we can do. You got this, Nemuri!”

Sheepish, she turns her head away from you three. “Fine. I can’t promise it’ll be good.”

You grin, finally seeing progress being made. You don’t know how long this’ll take or how hard it’ll be, but you have to start somewhere. Brainstorming, the four of you bounce ideas off of each other while Nemuri types away on her phone.

>Journal, with explicative

While I am sure that the president would rather get a textbook of some sort, a journal with some explanations, lore and knowledge sprinkled through it might be the perfect equilibrium between academicism and readibility

Miku says, “How about something attention grabbing?”

Nemuri thinks out loud. “Top 5 places you won’t believe will help you pass your next exam?” She shakes her head. “I’m not a sellout.”

Chiming in, Hinami brings up another idea. “Hanako would prefer something academic, maybe a textbook?”

Miku instantly groans. “That’s way too boring! I bet it’s boring to write too. I bet if we give her a textbook, she’ll glance over it and approve it without actually reading it. Wait, that actually might be a good idea...”

Mumbling, Nemuri says, “I don’t think I can pull that off.”

You think about it for a second; maybe there’s something in between. “How about a journal? Like a fake one, or like those ‘found footage’ type of films but in book form. That might be interesting. We can even put some in-depth things in there too without it getting too crazy.”

Nemuri smiles. “I’m okay with that.”

“Ooh,” Miku exclaims, “I like it!” With Hinami’s nod as a sign of approval, she says, “Let’s get started then, before we run out of time.”

The next hour is a blur as thoughts are thrown all around, pinned under different points and categorized ever so slowly. With time, something barely resembling coherent ramblings forms, going over everything from the meanings behind planets, how sigils are made, what luck is, and all sorts of things. No one, despite everyone’s best attempts, can find a way to smoothly segue into what is basically a noodle shop review.

Believing that you might get an idea if you saw what was written down so far, you make your way over to Nemuri. When she sees you coming, she angles the screen away from you so you don’t see. She says, “Not until I’m done, or close to it, okay? It’s really sloppy right now.”

“Hah, fine,” you say. It’s probably completely in abbreviations and shorthand right now, most likely illegible to you. “I hope you can make something out of the mess we just threw at you.”

A sudden knock on the door turns your attention away. You can’t help but feel a bit annoyed at the interruption.

You’re the one who walks up to the door, and before you can even open it, you see her face through the window. Oh. Oh no.

You try to not let your annoyance show when you open it. “Aya.” The editor-in-chief of the Newspaper Club stands before you.

“Ryuuta,” she says in return. “I’m here to investigate something extremely important.” Her eyes flicker to what’s behind you, and you realize the presence of the other club members is the only thing keeping her from openly spewing vitriol.

“Oh really?” you say with a flat voice. “What’s that?”

“There’s rumors about a possible pervert roaming about the school. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, do you?” She says that, but you’re sure she knows almost everything already.

You want to frown. “If you want to harass Hinami, I don’t think she’s in the mood for it.”

“Don’t try to stop journalism from taking place, or do you not care about the culprit being caught? Or are you actually the culprit?” she replies. Her eyes narrow. “And I don’t plan on harassing her.”

“I was in class then! I have eyewitnesses!” you reply, “We already investigated it anyways. There’s nothing else to know. You know, sometimes, you can’t get to the bottom of every mystery.”

Aya sighs. “It’s only a few questions, I promise. Can you step aside? Or, do you want the next headline to be ‘School Pervert Impedes Investigation’; how does that sound?”

“Can’t I answer your questions?”

She blinks. ‘I didn’t realize you were the victim.”

“Come on,” you say, “Be a little thoughtful here.”

Aya glances once more to Hinami behind you. You look back too, and you find them waiting on you a little. She sighs. “Okay.” You’re surprised that she accepted that so easily, though you won’t complain. “One-on-one interview with the alleged pervert.”

“Oh, shut up,” you say, ushering her out and closing the door behind you. While Aya leans against a wall and takes out a small notepad and pen, you give her an exasperated look.

“What happened?” she asks.

You proceed to give her a rundown of the events, both from what Hinami told you and the short investigation that everyone did yesterday. It comes out pretty quick, as you’d prefer to spend as little time as possible being prodded at by this annoying girl. “And then I found her clothes there, that’s it. I didn’t hear about anything else or find anything else.”

“Hmm, I see,” she says, “So hypothetically, if you were the culprit, why would you have done that? Hypothetically, of course.”

“Stop making it sound so suspicious!” you reply, “And hypothetically, it’ll probably be that they got embarrassed when they found out and tried to hide it away. It was probably an accident and misunderstanding.”

“I see,” she says under her breath, scribbling something down. This interview may have been a complete mistake. You’ve never felt your reputation so at risk before. She shuts her notepad and says, “Thanks. Guess that’ll be all you’re good for.” You reply with an annoyed frown. She continues. “Tell you what. To repay you, I’ll give you a lead on something interesting. I heard your club is into that sort of thing.”

Coming for her? This can’t be good. She’s probably using you for her own ends or something.

Can you even trust her?

You ask, “And where did you hear that?”

“Never reveal your sources,” she replies, “You know how it goes.”

You consider what she asks for a moment, and then you realize the power she wields is far too great. Rather than getting on her bad side and having what’s basically a mugshot of you on the newspaper next week, you’d rather play nice. Or at least, for now anyways.

“What is it?” you answer.

She gives you an expression that basically asks, Are you seriously going to play along that easily?

And you give one that says, Yes, now spit it out.

Aya, trying to hide a smug grin from coming into existence, tells you, “There’s a classmate I know and he’s having a bit of a problem.” The nonexistent smug grin becomes a smirk. She’s definitely smirking on the inside. “He’s having a bit of a ghost problem; he’s haunted.”

It takes everything you have to stop yourself from walking away. “Okay, what is it really? I know you don’t believe in ghosts.” Hell, you don’t really believe in them.

“The other day, someone managed to steal his shoes without opening his locker. He found it shut and locked tight, and the lock was intact. Not to mention, he’s the only one who should have the key. Now, you tell me, Ryuuta. If it’s not a ghost, then what is it?”

“This pervert is getting out of control. First a girl’s gym uniform, and then a guy’s shoes?”

“I don’t think it’s the same person,” she replies, “Or ghost. This kind of stuff has been going on for a while. Sometimes he’d find a pen missing only for it to be back in his desk a few days later. I think this is a job for the Occult Club.” Aya finishes that with a self-satisfied expression.

“Okay, okay, we’ll look into it,” you sigh, “Thanks for the tip.”

“You’re welcome.” She begins to turn around to walk way. Before she does leave, however, she says, “Feel free to drop on by whenever you have time if you want to know more. He’s part of the Newspaper Club, after all.”

And then she walks down the hallway, having had enough of being around you. Good riddance.

When you reenter the club room, you find Hinami drawing sigils on a whiteboard she pulled out from somewhere while Nemuri takes pictures with her phone. Miku, who was watching them, sees you and asks, “I think I saw Aya. What did she want?”

You wave it away. “A lead on a mystery. I’ll tell everyone later; there’s not enough time to check that out and finish this.”

“Hm, if you say so,” she says, her attention waning. “Hey, instead of sitting here, why don’t we get started on making the book?”

You’ve never done it before.

Finding nothing else better to do, you sit down beside her as she has all the materials one would need sprawled out before her and then some.

Guided by some tutorial taken off of a randomly chosen website, you and Miku get to work, folding out pages and marking out shapes in the cardboard. You don’t have any fancy material to use to cover it, but some construction paper will have to do. As it turns out, it’s a lot harder than it seems. Sometimes air bubbles get trapped, or the cardboard gets bent the wrong way accidentally, or that neither of you measured out everything properly before cutting.

Still, you persevere, and after countless attempts and a waste of everything, a plain hardcover was made. It feels juvenile, especially when Miku starts cutting shapes out and gluing them on to make pictures. You join in too, although a little reluctant.

With a stray marker left around, she draws and colors in parts of the cover, and when she’s done with the finishing touches, she stands back to admire her work. “Wow. I have no talent for this.”

Air shoots out of your nose harder than usual. “I think I ruined a bit of it too,” you say, laughing. “It’s a lot more colorful than I thought it’d end up being.” Courtesy of Miku, of course.

“I like it!” she says, “It’s supposed to be a journal, right? It has that homemade charm, probably because it is that.”

You think out loud, “It needs a title.”

“That’s always the hardest part,” Hinami notes, having seen that the cover was done. She smiles when she sees Miku’s doodles.

“Mmm,” Miku hums, “What would be something good?”

You wonder...

Wait, I just realized, the Newspaper club has to have a printer, right? Surely the Prez hasn't slashed their budget to the point where its only an online newspaper made on one of the school computers?

Usually a good printer and/or print station should have adjustable paper options and the like. Or paper-cutters to get clean and precise cuts. In the future we could make the base booklet by hand, then design it up on a computer and have the printers mass produce them for us to distribute around or wherever.

“Nemuri, what do you think?”

“...Huh?” Nemuri looks up from her phone, “Why me?”

“You have experience coming up with titles, right?” Since she writes novels or something like that. “What do you think is a good title?”

She pauses. And then she goes back into her phone. “Let me think about it.”

Hinami, taking notice of the state of the book, suddenly remembers something. “Miku, can I see that for a second?” She hands it to her proudly, as if it were a secret treasure or something. Hinami turns the cover over and runs her fingers along the seams. “This is amazing,” she says, probably exaggerating. “Ah, the art room has paper cutters. Did you two use the box cutters instead?”

You nod, “Yup. Worked just fine.” You recall all those times you didn’t cut deep enough and had to go back for a second pass, or how once you didn’t see it at all and ripped the paper instead. “Kind of.”

“For the pages of the book, I think we need to use one,” she points out. They needed to be folded and then cut before being glued to the spine.

“Before that,” you point out, “We need to actually print out the pages first.”

Her eyes still glued to her phone, she says, “I can ask my brother for that. It’ll be fine.” Ah, right, the club advisor. “And I have a title: ‘The Mokuzoutoshi Diaries” written from the point of a high school detective as they uncover the dark secrets of the school and its city. As the story goes on, the detective finds themselves deeper and deeper in something they shouldn’t have delved in, just when they want to turn back, they find the world of the occult has already grabbed onto them.”

“I, uh,” Miku says, “I think that’s a little too much.”

She puffs up her cheeks as they redden. Monotone, she replies, “Well, I like it.”

You find yourself walking down the streets with Hinami, the club hours ended. Nemuri said she’ll finish it and put it together with her brother’s help by tomorrow, so you left the matter to her.

Hinami, vocalizing her thoughts, says, “Oh, I know the bookstore you’re talking about. It’s a small walk away from here.”

You joke, “I hope we don’t get lost. You went there before, right?”

“Once or twice. I don’t know if they have the series you’re talking about though, it sounds obscure. If they aren’t there, you’ll have better luck in a hobby shop?”

“Guh, the closest one is far away,” you groan. The two of you walk along top of the river bank, and you look downhill at the incline, where a slow current flows quietly. The bridge up ahead becomes closer with every step. “I hope it’s there.”

“Let’s cross here,” Hinami says, and you follow her to the bridge. You hear something and stop in your tracks. When she sees you’ve frozen still, she pauses to ask, “What’s wrong?”

“Uh, are you crying?” you ask.

She’s completely confused. “I... no?”

You tilt your head and make a face of concentration. Sniffling. “You hear that, right?”

“Ah,” she exclaims, her eyes lighting up when she notices it too. “What’s that? I think it’s coming from underneath the bridge.”

You kind of want to check it out.

Putting a finger over your lips, you signal for her to be completely silent. Carefully, step by step, you go downhill, down the bank until you’re almost at the underside of the bridge. You ease yourself forward, sticking your head out to peek in.

You see someone curled up, her head buried in her knees and arms. A kid? The sniffles come from her, almost inaudible. She tilts her head up to see the river, and you jerk your head back to hide yourself for no real reason. You also almost headbutt Hinami, who you throw off-balance.

She grabs your shoulder to steady herself before taking a look herself, but you start walking to the crying girl.

“Hey there, is everything okay?” Your voice makes itself known before your footsteps, and she snaps to face you, leaning back as if to get away. “I’m not going to hurt you.”

Hinami whispers, “Maybe we should call the police.”

Except she whispers too loudly. The girl instantly gets up and shouts, “I-I’m fine! What do you want?” You notice one of her hands is different; it’s shining, as if it were made out of some kind of black steel.

You softly answer, “I heard crying, so I came to see if you were okay. Where’s—”

She stammers. “Of course I’m okay! I... I was just lost, that’s all.” Her stomach growls loudly, echoing thanks to being under the bridge.

You’re shocked that it could make be so audible, and Hinami tries to hide a giggle. She asks, “What’s your name? And where are your parents?”

“I-I’m Norako, and I’m from the future! You can’t call the police, b-because they won’t know who I am!”

Hinami tilts her head. “The future?” She’s curious.

“I’m a time-traveler, and I-I have a mission to complete, so you can’t call the police!” She raises her robot hand as proof, when you give her an incredulous look. “Look, I’m not lying!”

“Why, are you doing something bad?” Hinami asks, hiding a small smile, “Because if you are, I’ll have no other choice but to call them.”

“N-no! I’m just visiting a friend... I mean, I need to meet with an ally,” Norako replies, growing quiet. “And I got lost.”

You whisper to Hinami, “Sneaking out? Or maybe she really did go back in time.” You finish that with a small grin.

“You’re hungry, right? I heard your stomach growl. I’m surprised, I though robots didn’t eat food.“

“I’m from the future,” Norako says, quick to reply. “I can convert food to electricity!”

Hinami, crouching so she can be on the same eye-level as Norako, says, “Come on, let’s get you something to eat. You don’t plan on staying there all day, do you?” She extends a hand.

Hesitant at first, she walks up to Hinami and takes her hand, and with that, you begin your detour during this evening’s detour.

A fast food place was the first pick, and Norako seems happy with it. Before long, she’s stuffing her face with a hamburger while pick at your fries. Her eyes stopped being so red a while ago, and there’s now a smile on her face.

“T-thank you,” she says, “I don’t have money on me, but—if you ever need any help, I’ll be there!” The girl extends her robot hand and flexes it, as if to show it off.

Hinami laughs lightly, “If I ever need help, I’ll be sure to remember that.”

You watch them chat.
>”Are you really that strong?”
>”Can you do any cool robot tricks?”
>”What happened to your hand?”
>”You said something about a mission?”

“What’s it like in the future?” you ask, “I always wanted to know.”

“U-uh, I can’t tell you that!” Norako replies, “It’ll break the space-time-continuthingy, so I can’t tell you.”

You’re actually a little disappointed. “Aw, really? Do you keep any good luck charms on you at least? Going back in time and getting lost is pretty unlucky.”

She pauses as she swallows a mouthful of food. Then, she replies, “Nope, I don’t need luck. I have the power of my friends with my, and that’s all I need!”

You glance over to see Hinami, who looks like she’s about to melt in her chair from sweetness. She says, “I can tell, you’re strong, aren’t you?”

“I’m the strongest!” she says, “I’m a robot, after all.”

Unable to help yourself, you ask, “Can you do any cool robot tricks?”

“Ohoho!” she laughs dramatically, “Look at this—!” You lean forward, intently watching as she raises her hand. A motor whirs and the hand jerks into motion! It spins a complete circle and continues, as if it were some kind of blender. “Tada!”

Hinami claps softly, cheering and laughing. “That is amazing! I want to do that too. Ah, it’s a shame I’m not a cyborg.”

Norako pouts. “Being a human is good too. There aren’t many cyborgs in the future, and if you’re human, you’re normal...” she says, starting to trail off, her attention drifting off toward the ground.

Seeing this, Hinami says, “Really? But being a robot is cool, right? And you can do all sorts of cool things, so there’s nothing wrong with that.” Norako looks up again, surprised. “You get to be strong and amazing, so why would you want to be normal?” she asks, and an eager smile appears on Norako’s face.

“Yeah! Who wants to be normal anyways?” she says. Then she stuffs her face with the rest of the hamburger.

Relieved that there wasn’t any terrible emotional outburst, you wait until she’s done before asking her something again. “So, you said something about a mission? How did you get lost, anyways?”

“Ah,” Norako exclaims. You can’t believe she forgot. She tells you the name of the street that she was looking for. “That’s where my friend’s house is and I was going there but I got lost.”

Hinami says, “I know where that is. It’s not that far away.” She takes Norako’s garbage and throws it out. “Ready to go?”

“Yup!” the time-travelling cyborg exclaims. She takes a few steps before slowing to a stop. “Ah, s-sorry.”

“Hm? What’s wrong?”

“Umm,” she says, fidgeting, “I didn’t mean to...” she pauses, trying to find the right word, “...ruin your date.”

“Eh?” Hinami says.

You butt in, “N-nononono, it’s not a date! We’re not like that.”

Norako looks confused. “It’s not?”

Hinami replies, “It’s not! There’s nothing between us.”

A second passes. Then the girl replies, “Oh. Huh. Okay...” She follows Hinami out, completely skeptical.

Ampuchuuni!

>>2878747
Modern prosthetics can't do that.

>>2878748
They could with magic. She's not a robot, she's a spirit taking the form of a loli in order to test us.
>>
>>2878763
Is it a lolicon-hunting spirit?
>>
>>2878766
Probably. It's after us because of those gym clothes we definitely stole.

By the time you arrive, you realize it’s already gotten late.

When Norako spots her friend’s house, she speeds up ahead to the doorbell and hits the button repeatedly. By the time you reach her with at your pace, someone’s opened the door. Another girl, around the same age as Norako, runs to hug her, resulting in what’s practically a tackle. Neither of them fall, however.

“I was so worried, you’re late! Did you get lost again?”

Norako lets out a nervous laugh, “Haha, a little.”

The other girl puffs her cheeks. “Jeez, why can’t you just wait? At least bring a map or something.”

“Heheh, sorry. I won’t get lost next time.”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep!” she says. Then, she walks up to you and Hinami. “S-sorry for my friend! I know she’s a lot of trouble, so thank you for helping her!”

You and Hinami reassure her that it was fine and there wasn’t any problem, and she heads back inside, dragging along Norako, who gives the two of you a wave goodbye.

You wave back, and so does Hinami. With that severing any lingering thoughts, the two of you leave.

A minute elapses without a word from either of you, though it’s Hinami who breaks the silence. “I think bookstore’s closed by now.”

“Ah, damn it!” you say, almost forgotten. “Ah, whatever, I’ll check it out tomorrow.”

She sighs. “Let me show you where it is first so you won’t get lost,” she says.

You don’t look back at the house, even as it disappears down the street and around a corner. You shouldn’t mess with the space-time-continuthingy after all.
