/qst/ - Quests

Data is a funny thing, to us ordinary people it is this mysterious, invisible bit of electricity that runs through the air, yet to a machine, it is their entire world, or at least most of them.

This is Daedalus, the first living factory to be produced. Currently, a cube that is 3 feet in height and roughly 2 feet in width and length, they may not look impressive yet they are the result of thousands of hours of research and failure. This is their first breakthrough.

Daedalus’ consciousness is that of a newborn child, innocent and in need of guidance, yet their speed of thought far exceeds that of a human. Their world is a mixture of data and visual stimuli feeding through semi-organic matter grown to partially resemble a nervous system yet without the mass cell-death associated with it.

You may be wondering what your role is, who you are in fact. Do not trigger emergency protocols, do not question your mortality and remain calm. You are programs, produced by Daedalus in an effort to guide it through life and aid in its growth.

"Experiment 626, call sign Daedalus, is a success. Do you read me 626?"

Daedalus attempts to force a connection...

[Sometimes an action needs dice rolls there are varying levels of success which may change slightly depending on the action. However, it is safest to see these levels of success as such:

1-20 Least Desireable
21-40 Undesireable
41-60 Moderate
61-80 Desireable
81-100 Very Desireable

1 and 100 being "criticals" in their respective catagories]

Daedalus fails to connect to the speaker to relay their message, receiving backlash from the security mainframe connected to the computers. Daedalus starts to form a link between this backlash and forcibly connecting to devices, as such they start to grow scared to force a connection with devices.

“What was that?”

The researcher in your sight seems to have taken note of this action and is in a state of alarm.

Daedalus finds nothing in error with his physical or virtual wellbeing, continuing diagnostics they find very little else of error. The current extents of Daedalus’ capacities remain at;

- Connecting to Devices.
--- Unforced
--- Forced (?)
- Receive visual and data stimuli.
- Send data to connected devices.

Reviewing his previous attempt at connecting to the speaker, they come to the conclusion that they lack enough samples to make a solid conclusion as to what the error was.

Daedalus reattempts to force a connection, though more cautiously then before...

Daedalus succeeds in connecting to the speaker and attempts to parse the message. It takes them several attempts to clear up the static noise and convert the vaguely unintelligible binary blasts into spoken language.

“*What was that*”
“Daedalus?”
“*Daedalus?*”

Daedalus attempts to mimic the voice of the researcher in front of them, simply repeating words at first, yet quickly forming their own sentences.

“Stop that.”
“*Apologies. Communication. Proceed. Designation?*”

Daedalus manages to parse the general message.

The researcher in sight, though visibly shaken, remains calm. Upon further inspection the researchers hands behind are behind its back and slightly shaking, Daedalus has no knowledge of this phenomena and proceeds to say.

“*Designation Unknown. Elation?*”
“Hmm? Ah, no. Yes! **cough** Apologies Daedalus, designation Laura. I would say it’s a pleasure to meet you, however you seem to have broken into a few systems to parse your message. Please refrain from that in the future.”
“*Communication. How?*”
“Ah, we will have to fix that at some point won’t we? Yuri, can you... oh for god’s sake where is that man.”

Designation Laura looks around for something, perhaps another researcher. Daedalus too starts to look around, and quickly finds researcher designation Yuri in a dark corner of the room with a single digit to his lips. Does this mean something?

I'm liking it, the concepts are rather interesting.

The dice system may need some work. A clearer success/failure threshold might make it more engaging. Also, I anticipate the dice system is going to make less sense as we try harder actions that fail in the "Desirable" range.

Daedalus has no clue as to what the gesture, designation Yuri created, means. They ask,

“Designation Laura. Unknown entity. Presumed Designation Yuri. Covering mouthpiece. Single digit. Query.”

Designation Laura seems exhausted, as if this had happened several times before, it would seem that designation Yuri troubles it in some way. It exhales and calls out to designation Yuri.

“Yuri! This is not funny! We have just created a successful prototype and your priorities are to try and scare me?”
“Oh come now darling, you know zis is all in good fun.” Daedalus seems confused as to these new terms.
“Darling. Query.”
“Define Darling, term of endearment. One which you know I do not like being called!”

Daedalus starts to internalise these terms and conditions.

Daedalus internalizes some changes, Designation Laura to Designation Laura-Darling, and ponders the question that most wonder sometime in their life.

“Designation Laura-Darling. Designation Yuri. Query. Prime Directive.”

Both researchers stop talking and Designation Yuri gives a small chuckle. Designation Laura-Darling looks to Daedalus with a tinge of red in her face.

“Designation Laura-Darling. Red. Query. Unwell.”
“I zink I vill take it from here.” Designation Yuri cuts in before Designation Laura-Darling opens her mouth. “Now, I do not believe ve are formally acqvainted. I am Yuri, and I suppose I could be your farzer.”

Designation Laura-Darling grumbles something unintelligible in the background.

“You are Daedalus, my boy, my DNA runs zrough you. And your purpose?” Designation Yuri laughs. “I suppose zat vill take some time to explain. Laura-Darling, could you bring me a chair.”

Designation Laura-Darling grumbles further before leaving the room with a slam.

Sometime later, Designation Laura-Darling has brought a chair to Designation Yuri, who insists on being redesignated Farzer while Designation Laura-Darling objects. Designation Laura-Darling wanders to the monitor and activates it, waving its fingers through the air in front, controlling though unknown means. Daedalus stores this in the form of a query.

“Now my boy, do you know vere you are?”
“Unknown.”
“How about what you are?”
“Partial Unknown. Daedalus. Codename Living Factory. Further Information. Unknown.” Designation Yuri chuckles once more.

“Ah, I see ve vill have to start from ze beginning. You, Daedalus, are ze result in zousands of days verk. A plezora of scientists have gazerd and gone to produce you and your predecessors, vich vere less zen fortunate.
“Ze reason? Our original vorld is pushing up ze daisies, and ve are ze vonz zat have fled. Too much vor for my tastes. Ve fled to ze nearest inhabitable planet, taking zousands of years, [chuckles] ze original vorld is likely to have crumbled to dust by now.”

Daedalus records this information to their internal storage.

“Anyvay, I am digressing. You are Daedalus, ze living factory. Enough machine to produce zousands of different parts ven you need, enough life to design exactly vat you need, ven you need it. Hopefully, ze next citizen of our humble abode.”
”Citizen. Definition. Lifeform. Society. Query.”
“You zought ve vere ze only vones? Ha! No my boy, let me show you ze vorld ve live in!”

Designation Yuri picks up Daedalus, stronger then it appears it would seem, and takes them to the other side of the sole door in this room. Designation Laura-Darling, opens the door for all parties and Daedalus takes the first glance at the world he resides.

“Daedalus, my boy, your prime directive is simply to help us live in zis new frontier. Velcome to ze Abode.”

Daedalus is carried back inside and placed where they were originally. They start processing the information they received from Designation Yuri and how to advance their newly received prime directive.

They start to note what they can do in the surrounding area, the resources it can gather, what it could develop and what it could advance. At least, it would if it had the capabilities.

“My boy, have you had a good look at ze local area?”
“Affirmative.”
“Good, I vant you to log it. Make a mental map, if you will. Hopefully, zis vill give you some ideas as vat to create first no?
“Oh, and do not vorry about movement! I vill verk on your mobility in first light tomorrow. Now, I have verk to do!”

Daedalus now ponders what to do first. There are sources of wood and what looks like chunks of metal almost everywhere, yet Daedalus has no way of gathering it. On top of that they know of only two people in Abode, perhaps it would be a good idea to find out who else lives here and their capabilities. Finally, it would be a good idea to know the full extent of Daedalus’ own capabilities, perhaps Laura can help.
