The Grutzberg case has been fairly successful, in the fact that causalities were relatively minor, personal injuries were nonfatal, Henry’s relationship with Rosa has been vastly improved. However, due to knocking down the fucking clocktower, Henry and Co decided it would be wise to get out of town before any blame was placed upon them, without inquiring about a reward. Ophelia has been officially recruited into our gaggle of idiots. Henry and Charles have made it back to the capital unharmed, and during a little fishing trip to cool off, Henry has managed to reel in a massive fish.

Quest rules:
1. All dice rolled are assumed to be D100 unless otherwise stated
2. In most situations, only the first two dice rolls will be counted, if the threads become more popular this may be changed. This choice ultimately falls to the Lorekeeper, odd circumstances may cause him to overlook this rule (a ton of crits later down the chain for instance)
3. All dice rolls are final
4. Critical fails are considered to be between 1-5, Critical hits are between 95-100. Crits overpower any other roll except another crit. In the rare chance that a crit fail and crit success happen. The Lorekeeper will do something interesting from a story angle. Similarly, rolling 2 of the same number will be considered a MEGA crit, just pray its two high numbers.
5. Near misses may occur, where a rolled number is close to the required threshold, whether over or under. This can have an impact on how the story proceeds. However these are up to the decision of the Lorekeeper.
6. Sometimes there are optional choices one may participate in, these will generally NOT be taken unless there are multiple posters who wish it, assuming there are multiple posters in the thread
7. There are often times choices with multiple parts, each part is counted separately, unless otherwise stated, sometimes rolls will be required before counting the second, third, etc, part
8. There will be “Time Limited” decisions, in which characters may only do a set number of actions, these will be clearly marked. Generally you will only be able to choose one decision per ‘round’.
9. Interviews: Interviews will generally be a freeform set of questions that the readers have to ask the person they are interviewing. No hand holding here, I will purposefully leave up wrong answers or decisions, although for the most part careful readers will be able to tease these out.
10. Rules may be subject to change between threads, but will not change during the same thread. These rules are what we will follow for the remainder of this thread.

Henry pulled with all of his might. He let out a yell as a massive bass emerged from the water, twisting in the air a couple of times before heading right for the two of them. Henry wisely sidestepped out of the way, leaving Charles to be knocked down by a massive bass. The fish trashed about on top of him for good measure. Henry rushed over to his fishing satchel and rummaged around in it.

“KEEP HIM FROM GETTING BACK INTO THE WATER CHARLES, STOP IT LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDED ON IT.”

“HELP ME!” Charles said, the kid had grabbed onto the fish and was being roughly thrown about. The thing was roughly the same size as Charles. Henry couldn’t believe he’d managed to catch the damned thing, and without Johnny’s help. Maybe his luck had finally turned around. His thoughts were interrupted by Charles being flung into his back.

At last Henry grabbed the hammer from his bag and brought it to bear against the beast from the deep. After a couple of strong attacks, the beast lay dead. The thing had a couple of stripes across its belly and a couple sets of fins. Henry instantly knew it was a seltzer bass, and it must have been at least thirty pounds. They’d be eating really, really well tonight, and probably for the next couple of nights if they kept it to themselves.

“We did it Charles!” Henry said, grinning ear to ear.

“Your covered in blood Henry!” Charles groaned.

The boy slowly got up, his legs seemed to have been turned into jelly.

“We’re going to need to find a place to prepare this thing, but god damn I didn’t expect us to catch anything today, let alone a monster!” Henry exclaimed, the excitement palpable in his voice. “You okay bud? You hurt?”

“I’m fine. Holy shit how did we catch that!?” Charles exclaimed. The boy seemed a bit dizzy but otherwise unharmed.

It had been a hell of a fight, not only that, he had Charles as a witness. He would gloat about this to Johnny for MONTHS. As one last act, he kissed his fishing rod to thank it for the amazing luck it had provided.

Henry hauled the fish downstream of their little fishing spot, and then set to work gutting it. He took his time while doing so, showing Charles the basics. Charles was a bit too squeamish to get his own hands dirty, something Henry would make sure to work out of him. He couldn’t very well be his apprentice when he wouldn’t even touch a corpse. After that, he threw the rest of the fish into a waterproofed bag he’d gotten for fishing.

He then walked with Charles through the forth and into the third ring of Celeste, stopping by a market, and trading for a bit of salt to preserve the fresh meat. He explained how salt was useful for preserving a corpse but often dried out a human corpse too thoroughly. Henry explained a bit more about preserving meat, then the two discussed all sorts of other subjects. Henry made sure to not touch on the topic of necromancy while they were above ground.

Soon enough the two returned back down to Henry’s… their… home. Henry sighed, he was like a proper head of household now. It was a weird feeling.

“You Hungry Charles?” Henry inquired.

He was going to cook this fucking thing either way. He wanted to know how it tasted god damn it.

“Yeah I am.” Charles said, excited. “So what do we do first?”

“Grab a cleaver from my back room. The one that’s in the bucket, NOT ON THE RACK!” Henry said.

He didn’t want to use something that might still have corpse juice on it. As he dwelled on the subject of the fish, a horribly delightful thought popped into his head. He hadn’t practiced necromancy in a few days and he wanted to get back into practice, he also wanted to see just how much he could scare the kid.

With a quick look at the storage room to make sure Charles wasn’t in eyeshot, he cast raise dead as quietly as he could manage. About a minute later Charles strolled back into the room waving the knife around as if he was sword fighting with it.

“Didn’t Johnny teach you to be careful with those things?” Henry asked.

“No, he mainly just thought me a bunch of fancy ways of looking silly.” Charles said.

“Footwork is vital for combat, kiddo. Maybe we’ll spar and I’ll whack you on the head a few times so you can get the picture.”

“Right well… here.” Charles said, holding out the handle knife first, eyeing the fish.

The kid REALLY didn’t want to get near the thing.

“No no, you’re doing it.”

“Do I have to?”

Henry stared at Charles silently for a few seconds before the kid obeyed with a groan.

As he crouched down and got the blade into position, Henry whispered a single word.

“Flop.”

The fish sprung to ‘life’ and flopped around. Charles screamed at the top of his lungs and plunged the knife into the thing a couple of times before it got lodged into the fish’s skull. The kid then scurried back and hid behind Charles, panting and shaking in fear.

Henry laughed REALLY REALLY hard after that, he knew he shouldn’t have, but god damn that had been funny.

“WHAT THE HELL HENRY?” Charles said, his fear turning to fury.

“First lesson, always be expecting the unexpected.” Henry said, vaguely mimicking Johnny’s tone of voice.

“That wasn’t funny.” Charles said, crossing his arms and pouting. “Don’t do that again!”

“Come on it’s just a joke Charles”

“I didn’t laugh.”

“Cheer up, pretty soon you’ll be able to do this too, then you can scare the hell out of me!”

That finally seemed to get Charles cheered back up. The kid sat down next to the fireplace Henry had gotten installed when he’d moved into this place. He’d even hooked it up to a chimney in a house that sat almost directly above them, so nobody ever questioned it. It was a pretty sweet setup.

“Here, as an apology, I’ll let you have the best meat, heck I’ll even let you choose how we cook the thing. Think of it as getting revenge with your stomach.”

Henry ducked into his cold box, first double checking to make sure the runes still had power, then grabbing a small wooden box with a marking of a cow on it. He opened it up and revealed a stick of butter hidden inside. He spread it over the pan, placed some pieces of fish onto it, and began cooking them up. He grabbed a few dried plants and other things from the root celler he’d dug into the back of his workroom. And placed them onto a couple of wooden plates.

Henry grabbed some straw and a couple of logs and placed them into the fireplace, then cast a couple of sparks from his hands

“So it’ll be a little bit Charles, do you mind watching the pan?” Henry said.

“What do I do?” Charles asked.

“Make sure it doesn’t burn, and flip it over occasionally with that spatula over there. We aren’t making anything too fancy for today.”

“Okay!” Charles said, staring intently at the cooking fish.

Henry took the time to read a couple of his letters. The first two were generic work orders for a couple of rot proof zombies, pretty simple orders overall. The next letter was from Duncan, telling them to check back with him so he knew they were okay. The last letter, the one from Vermillion, was a tad more concerning.

The letter itself was fairly plain, which was rather unusual for Vermillion. The main point of concern was the simple message scribbled out over its surface. It simply read:

‘We need to talk.’

Henry felt a pit in his stomach

“Something wrong?” Charles asked.

Henry decided he’d think about it later, for now he had a really nice meal to prepare and enjoy, and it would be a good way to break out of the weirdness caused by a week away from home due to extremely odd circumstances.

“How’s it looking Charles?” Henry asked after a little time had passed.

The boy gave a thumbs up and grabbed for the pan before recoiling. He shook his hands around and let out a couple screams.

“Did you really just burn yourself?” Henry said.

“I forgot it was hot.” Charles replied, rubbing his hands.

“That’s what the handle is for.” Henry muttered, wouldn’t do much good now.

Henry went to his cold box and slipped out a couple of ice runes from it, then tossed them over to Charles. After that was accomplished, he turned his attention to the meal. He grabbed the pan by the handle and used the spatula to transfer the food onto the plates. He then went back into his storage room and grabbed some spices, a couple forks and knives, and a pair of wooden cups.

It was a fairly special dinner after all, no sense to have it be bland.

“Grab some water from the cold box Charles. Also, place the ice runes back inside of there before it gets too warm.” Henry ordered, carefully handing the child the cups.

“Yes sir!” Charles said.

The meal was finished, the fish itself, the spices and butter on top, and the cups of water. Henry wished he’d picked up some potatos or vegstables but this was still a great meal.

Henry moved over to a small round table in the middle of the room and sat the plates down, he then motioned for Charles to join him and the two dug in. The fish was absolutely delicious. He’d have to make sure he properly preserved the rest of this when they had finished eating.

“So Charles, we’ll be doing a couple jobs over the next week or so, I’ll be showing you the basics of necromancy. They aren’t too complex, it’s just a lot of work honestly.”

“So I’ll have to cut into people?” Charles asked.

“Well, we’ll need to make sure the bodies are in proper shape before we waste time enchanting and binding them. I have a couple of spellbooks I use for most of it. Stuff is far too complex to recite from memory or I wouldn’t bother using em. They’re far beyond anything you can do right now so no worries there. I’m hoping to just get you used to the work.”

“I don’t know Henry.” Charles said.

“I put a bag over their faces when I started out, I think it’ll helps you a lot.” Henry said.

“What, really?” Charles asked.

“Well I find that thinking of them as an object rather than a person is the better option. Makes it far less uncomfortable, you’ll get used to it eventually.”

“How long are we going to live in the sewers?” Charles asked, between bites.

“Long as I’m operating this business, this is a fantastic location you know.”

“It’s a sewer tunnel…” Charles said.

“Plenty of room, nobody searches down here, it’s located in the second ring so it’s incredibly safe, it’s close to Undertown, and there are a couple tunnels that lead out into the lake, although those can be incredibly dangerous admittedly. On top of that, I don’t need to pay taxes down here, or upkeep a fancy home. Regardless, I’ve lived here a long time Charles, I’m not moving.”

He sighed, Johnny had asked him the same thing from time to time, although he eventually had given up. Henry was quite attached to his little shithole.

“Well what about the smell?” Charles asked.

“This is a rainwater tunnel Charles, no sewage actually flows through here, that smell is coming from the main tunnels located a good distance away. I generally wear a mask if I’m going through them.

Henry finished up his meal and placed the dishes and silverwear into a bucket full of soapy water, he then placed a minor heat rune inside of it so the water would warm up and stay warm, he could use it as bathwater later on. He sure as hell needed one.

“I’m gonna be running a bit of an errand Charles, do you mind waiting with Rosa while I do it?”

“Is it dangerous?” Charles asked.

Henry took a moment to respond, the kid wasn’t stupid, he knew something was up.

“No fooling you huh? Yeah it might be, I need to talk to someone, would be better if you don’t get involved at all, less that can go wrong.”

Charles looked a bit upset and Henry couldn’t blame him, the kid probably felt a bit useless and hated it.

“Look, the less you deal with some people the better, alright?”

“Thanks I guess…” Charles said, sighing and standing up.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Rosa had been a bit surprised for Henry to be back so suddenly but Henry qualified it as simply taking her up on her offer to train Charles in magic, the kid was really ready to learn. He also made sure Charles promised to try and reel in his black mana. He hoped the kid wouldn’t cause too much trouble, though he doubted he really could. He noticed the priest in the background, looking him over the whole time, he knew it was probably nothing but it set him on edge.

After that it was a forty minute walk to Vermillion’s base of operations. Nothing had changed really, he still fucking hated the damned place and he hated these people. But they had contacts to house Roma, and Vermillion was a kingpin in the city. He couldn’t really go through anyone else either.

Sides the man hadn’t stuck a dagger in his back after ten or so years, which made him the current record holder for it.

Henry sighed, he needed to gather some info before plunging into the breach. In reality he was scared as hell and was trying to work up the nerve. He was about to go willingly into that hellhole, and his life would pretty much be in the hands of Vermillion. The vampire wasn’t crazy, in fact he was incredibly intelligent, and Henry had always been on fair terms with the man, but this all felt off.

“Hey there friend, is Vermillion in?” Henry asked.

“What?” The vampire asked. “Unless you got business you better buzz off.”

“Are you deaf?!” Henry asked. “I was asking if Vermillion is inside, is he or not?”

“Yeah he is, the fuck sorta business you got in there?”

“I got a summons, don’t know a damned thing beyond that.” Henry said, producing the letter and showing it to the man.

The vampire got a really odd expression on his face and chuckled a bit.

“Oh THAT, yeah bud, Vermillion told me to see you RIGHT inside.”

Oh fuck what had he done wrong?

“Can you at l-least tell me if he’s in a good mood?” Henry said, the tinniest bit of fear leaking through his voice.

“He’ll be UTTERLY delighted to see you, I’m sure.” The guard said.

The man knocked on the door a couple times and a few more guards came out, all vampires. They spoked with the front guard for a few seconds before he produced the letter, and they all chuckled about it. Then they surrounded Henry and forcibly brought him inside.

The place was pretty empty, although a few miscreants were getting their jollies. The club itself was by far the second most horrible place in Celeste. Henry was lead through a couple of rooms, through a few stone tunnels, and then finally into a large round room with a small table in the center, and a couple of chandeliers above. Sitting in a rather posh looking chair was Vermillion. The man was drinking out of a wine glass, although Henry knew it wasn’t wine he was drinking.

“So good of you to join us Henry, please have a seat.” Vermillion said.

Henry noticed a man in blue robes out of the corner of his eyes, he wasn’t about to question what was going on, he might very well end up dead. At the very least he could expect it to be fast, Vermillion held some respect for him.

“Do you know why you are here, Henry?” Vermillion ask, smiling warmly.

“No I actually do not.” Henry said.

He was doing his best to sound ‘normal’ for lack of a better term, but he knew Vermillion would be able to see right through him, that man was an asshole like that. Henry also knew that he stood no fucking chance against him, and even if he did manage to land a lucky shot he’d be torn apart. He’d have to play this out.

“Really now Henry? This is fairly simple.” Vermillion said.

The vampire dropped his smile and assumed an expression Henry would have described as ‘bored.’

“Is it about me being in Grutzberg last week?” Henry asked, trying to be as vague as possible.

“So that’s where you have been?” Vermillion said, “Yes that’s pretty much the issue, I’m happy that’s been resolved.”

“That’s it?” Henry asked.

“Well you up and left us right after you filled out that big order, I didn’t think you’d stab us in the back when we have so much… history. But some nosy birdies keep tweeting in my ear that you aren’t trustworthy.”

Henry could feel a presence in his mind, and he decided to willingly give up the required info. He didn’t want anyone probing too deeply after all. Nor did he want to give anyone a reason. Vermillion looked over to where the mage was, and the vampire was once again all smiles.

“Thank you Logan, you’ve been a dear.” Vermillion said, waving the mage out. Now it was just Vermillion, Henry, and three other vampires.
“So then, now that that is out of the way, who’s the kid you were seen leaving with a week ago?” Vermillion said.

“Were you aware that the Grutzberg royal family was infilitrated by one of the other houses.”

“Well well, now THAT’S a valuable piece of information, and assuming it’s true, confirms something the higher ups have been talking about… but that’s for them to know, no reason for us commoners to worry our little heads off about it.”

“Well that’s good.” Henry said.

“Oh stop it Henry, we’re all friends here, you’re welcome to tell me to go fuck myself, we all know that’s what you’re thinking. Go on, sticks and stones!”

“I’ll pass, its less fun when you know it’s coming.” Henry said.

“Ha ha ha!” Vermillion said, “Quite right, but that does remind me, I had another reason I wanted to speak with you, now that we’re done will all the treachery and cloak and dagger things.”

“So what do you want?”

“What’s the catch Vermillion, and do I get compensation for my time and for the danger I’m assuming I’ll be putting myself into? Something that doesn’t include a hook, concession, or any other way you’d screw me over?”

“Oh there will be pay, five gold or the performance, as for the catch… well perhaps I should explain. One of my friends owns a chateau near Norbrook, and he’s going to be throwing a fancy party. In addition to that he’ll inviting quite a few people there from what I understand. Apparently there will even be a couple of inquisitors there. He wanted to spice the party up a bit, crazy bastard, so he’s going to have a murder. Basically I’ve arranged to have a troublesome noble invited there and murdered, two birds with one stone.”

“The hell do I factor into this?” Henry asked.

“So this troublesome person, I’m going to have you be their… bodyguard we shall say. You’ll bring them there, then my friend will have a good drink… and one of the guests will stumble upon the body, beginning the mystery. It’s my friend’s responsibility to frame one of the other guests of course, and you have my word he’s very good at doing such things. I’ve gotten his help in the past after all.”

“So that’s all I need to do?” Henry asked, keeping things brief.

“This isn’t a set up right?” Henry reluctantly inquired.

“Henry if I wanted you dead or in prison I’d have the decency to be honest about it.” Vermillion replied. “Hell you might even be worth me making a personal appearance if you garnered me calling for your death.”

“Thanks…” Henry said.

“Oh right, death is such a near and dear thing to you, isn’t it.” Vermillion said. “I guess it is to most people. I suppose that’s one of the benefits of my condition, I can be very cavalier about it now can’t I?”

“Look, five gold ain’t enough bud, especially with a pair of inquisitors in the mix, not to mention potential unknown risks.”

“I can increase it to seven gold but no more than that Henry.” Vermillion stated.

“Fine, I won’t push you further.” Henry said.

“Smart man.”

“I want it in writing you aren’t setting me up.” Henry said.

“A contract? Really? My my aren’t you paranoid lately, I can provide such a document, although only because I really do want to see this little game carried out.” Vermilion said, smiling daggers.

“Do you know anything about the other guests, or more importantly the inquisitors?”

“All I know is that one of them has a particular interest in our dear lady. Oh right, Lady Rothsford is the noble we’ll be sending to meet her death. As for the other guests… I don’t actually know too much, I try to keep my hands out of other family members business if I can. Staying out of politics when you have no stake in it keeps your friends plenty and your life long.”
“So you don’t know anything about who’s going to the party your sending me to?”

“I’m afraid not Henry, would you like me to put THAT into writing as well?” Vermilion said.

The man had the sort of tone and voice one would have when addressing a misbehaving child. Henry utterly hated it. Why the fuck was he getting drawn into this? Then again trying to avoid it would be far worse. At least here he knew who was dying ahead of time.

“So who is this noble exactly? The hell can someone cause you trouble?” Henry said.

“Trying to get under my skin now? Trying to say that I can’t handle a single woman? Ha ha ha.” Vermillion sneered.

The vampire laughed for a little bit before continuing.

“I’ll bite then, she’s been using her own contacts to work the local guard up, impacting some of my businesses. Bit of an odd thing though, she has connections to the cult of the sun, meaning she might actually know who’s feet she’s stepping on. If so then she’s a hell of a lot dumber or braver than most. Regardless, this little tit for tat me and her have been involved in will come to a tidy end. Thanks to you and my dear friend. Does that answer your question dearie?”
>>
>>2887463
“For. The. Moment.” Henry replied.

“Good, do you need anything else?”

“So you really don’t know who the inquisitors are?”

“Look, they are being added in to create a bit more excitement from what I understand. Just having the murder itself and the investigation would be too easy. Berkem likes a good challenge.”

So that was the host’s name.

“Can I see that contract now?” Henry said, taking on a joking tone.

“Oh of course, let me just talk to a couple people and get the thing drafted.” Vermillion replied.

“Thank you Vermillion.” Henry said.

“As for your pay, I’ll have it ready in a moment.”

“Thank you.” Henry said. It was the most civil conversation the two had had in a long time.

Henry waited for twenty or so minutes, he hated how the vampires in attendance got a kick out of him squirming, he wished he was strong enough to make them fear for their lives, but he was nowhere near good enough of a mage to accomplish such a feat.

By the time Vermillion had returned Henry had grown tired of being nervous, he decided he’d rather be indifferent, it was far less uncomfortable for all parties involved.

Vermillion handed over a small sack with seven gold coins in it, and a neatly made binding contract. Henry carefully read it over to ensure he wasn’t getting screwed over, then he grabbed out a magnifying glass and a couple of seer crystals from his pouch and scanned over the document to make sure there was nothing hidden. Once that was done, Henry signed his name next to Vermillion and rolled up the document into his pack.

The thing was a one way binding document, meaning only Vermillion would suffer penalties if he reneged. While Henry would only lose out on having leverage. Although that was only for the document itself. Henry knew DAMN well what happened to those who crossed the man.

“Well its been fun but I want to go the hell out of here now.” Henry said, forcing a chuckle.

“Oh its that time already? Well Henry, you have a good calm week before this little shindig kicks off properly, so I’d make sure you get your house in order, I’m not able to delay this and well, you’ll ruin the party AND my mood if you try to skip out.” Vermillion said. “Anywho, that about does it.”

Henry went to leave before Vermillion let out a polite cough. Henry froze in his tracks and slowly cocked his head to get a clear view of the vampire.

“Oh and you should stop back for tea sometime, I have a new variety I’m sure you’d love!”

What a fucking asshole, he KNEW Henry hated tea.

Henry didn’t exactly like contacting inquisitors, but they were the only people he actually knew within the organization. Their headquarters were easy enough to find. It was a large piece of ground, located within the second ring of the city, and made up of about a dozen or so buildings. Included in those were a church, and a small healers abbey. Although everyone knew that those particular healers were a special kind of crazy. The main building, known as Saint Vigil’s hall, was where Henry found himself. The amount of people in black cloaks and other church related insignia was immense. No doubt some ‘familiar’ faces also lurked about, which terrified Henry far more than anything else.

He REALLY didn’t want to end up recognizing someone for the wrong reasons. While they would leave him alone assuming he did the same… he didn’t want to think about it.

Luckily for him, Grom was fairly well known within the order. The man was a veteran after all. The woman at the front desk, a middle aged lady with a pencil above one ear simply listened to Henry go on about what had happened in New Haven, and how he wanted to thank the people he’d worked with. The woman grabbed at a fancy looking switchboard and pressed a couple of buttons on it. The thing was immensely complex and expensive from what Henry could tell. He watched as a couple magical pulses spread down clear tubes further inside the building, and a few seconds later a series of magical pulses traveled down another set of tubes and a piece of paper was spat out of a machine. The woman read the paper before whistling for a Cathar to escort Henry further inside the building. The Cathar grabbed the paper, read what was printed on it, and waved for Henry to follow him.

Henry found himself in a well-lit meeting room with a long table and about a dozen finely carved chairs on either side of it. There were a few planters with flowers along the window, and a couple small trees growing out of some larger ones along the far wall. Carved into the table was a depiction of the church’s symbol, the all seeing eye, although with the specific twist the Inquisition gave to it. The eye was fully shut.
>>
>>2888120

There was one other key feature of the room, Grom himself, sitting at the far end of the table, waiting for Henry to make the first move. The man seemed much the same, although now he was cleanly shaven and much cleaner. As if he’d never battled against hordes of werewolves or zombies.

Next to him on the table was that same metronome that he had used during their little meeting in the Hamlet of Blaise. It’s like Grom didn’t completely trust him or something.

“Good to see you again Henry, I assume this wasn’t just to thank me, although I do highly appreciate you taking the time to speak with me.” Grom asked. The man was obviously feigning innocence, or perhaps it was just professional curtesy. Henry sometimes mixed the two up.

Decisions:
1. *sit down at the table next to the man*
2. *politely stand*
3. “Where is Cassius?”
4. “I’m happy you made it back to the capital what with all the chaos going on.”

“I’m happy that you made it back to the capital, what with all the chaos going on.” Henry said.

“Thank you Henry. I assume you’re aware of what’s occurred then?”

“I have a fairly good idea, but I haven’t made assumptions.”

“I know very little myself, and what I do know isn’t to be shared I’m afraid.”

“Fair enough.” Henry said, ending their first exchange.

“How have you managed?” Grom said, showing the slightest bit of concern.

“We got caught up in some bullshit on the way home, the clocktower over in Grutzberg keeled over.”

“We received word about that about three hours ago from a rider, apparently it caused quite the commotion.”

“We’ll Charles has become my actual apprentice now.” Henry said. “I don’t know if you’ve heard about the pardon.”

“I’m relieved that the Solarch has seen sense.” Grom said, a small smile on his lips. “Good news is a treasured in my line of work, so hearing that the royal heir has had a turn of good luck is reassuring. You’ve taken him on as your apprentice?”

“Well, he’s shown quite a bit of magical aptitude, and Rosa agreed to help teach him.”

“I’m afraid I don’t quite know who you’re talking about.” Grom said.

“Oh… her?” Henry said.

“The healer you were speaking about doesn’t have the best reputation.” Grom said. “Her fellow sisters treated her like she had the plague.”

“Is there gossip about her?” Henry asked.

Grom glanced about nervously.

“I don’t like speaking ill of others when it serves no purpose Henry.” Grom said. “Especially when it comes to the inquisition, it’s a rather bad habit to get into.”

“Look, Grom, have I earned nothing from my help at New Haven? Sides I’ve spent a good couple weeks with Rosa now and I want to learn more about her if I’m going to have my apprentice train with her. It DOES serve a purpose.”

“I see… I suppose I can share, this time.” Grom said, coughing uncomfortably.

“Alright well, I’ll give you some time to gather the courage.” Henry said.

“I do hope you jest Henry, it’s a serious thing to talk about another person like this.”

Grom rolled his shoulders and took the time to gaze out through the window, out into the city.

“She’s an incredibly curious and stubborn person for one, she not only asked an absurd amount of questions, but had the audacity to study our movements to and from the holy grounds. The woman is a tad nosy, although given the events going on in the town, it might have just been her sense of caution. As for more relevant information, she’s actually had a run in with our department at two points in her life. The first was when she started out healing. I don’t know the exact details but it was a small town near Avignon, apparently she had part in the response to a factory disaster that occurred there. The main contention is that the healer’s sect acted completely out of line in their response to it, but no charges of Heresy or Abdication of duty were given out. The charges were waved away by Solarch Gamora himself.”

“And the second time?”

“She was charged with healing pagans.” Grom said. “After a thorough review the inquisitors assigned to that case found that she had not committed Heresy per say but she did receive some punishment handed down by the local Silvers. From the notes I read she also cursed the ranking Crusader out the entire time she received her lashing. I’ve had it confirmed from the source that this did happen. This happened out near Fredrickson, near the border to the ashen swamps from what I understand.”

“Fine.” Henry said.

“Please for both our sakes, don’t try to get into them.” Grom said. “Lord above knows that me talking with a civilian in this building is unusual enough.”

Henry said nothing, he needed time to process what he had learned. He’d pegged Rosa as a crazy coward. The woman was fearful, needy, and nosy. She had a crazy religious streak too, but this little piece of information was incredibly interesting. Beyond all that, he had a little kernel of respect for her.

“Don’t feel bad about telling me this, circumstances made me the guardian of the royal heir, knowing about the people I let him be around is a matter of national security!”

“You’re aware he’s the royal bastard correct? I only learned myself when I arrived back at the capital. I agree that keeping him safe is a rather important issue, but keep in mind that there are plenty of others the church might turn to, to fill the role.”

“I’m not going to bust into your archives for this, but what do your reports say about me? With Charles hanging around me, your colleagues are most definitely found to be too curious for my tastes. Am I going to have problems if things go to shit and I need to talk or work with other inquisitors?” Henry said.

“Odd questions to ask me.” Grom said. His eyes had narrowed a bit, and he was acting more cautiously.

“In general, if you follow the law and don’t commit acts of heresy then you shouldn’t have a problem with any inquisitor.” Grom said, “We aren’t nearly as ruthless or careless as some stories may indicate.”

“Do I have a record?” Henry asked.

At that, Grom noticeably relaxed, he even became a bit jovial.

“Not that I’m aware of. But I don’t know your full name, Henry, if that ever was your real one. Who are you exactly? Now that the imminent threat of death isn’t over your head. I’m fairly sure you didn’t work for the royal family, and I’m almost certain you’ve never worked for the church, what with your average demeanor.”

Grom thought to himself for a moment, but simply shook his head.

“It’ll probably come to you eventually.” Henry said, dodging the question.

“Hrmph, fair enough.” Grom replied. “Look, I think you’re a shifty individual but your heart is obviously in the right place, or perhaps you seek an easy path to the throne.”

The words hung in the air for a little bit. Henry decided to break it up by laughing, and laughing hard.

“Grom, I want nothing to do with any of that, lord above knows I would be planting the biggest target possible on my back.”

“So has Cassius run off? He’s here isn’t he, did he not want to say hello?” Henry asked.

It was honestly kind of rude. He’d come all this way to speak with the two of them and Cassius had the nerve to not show up.

Grom placed a hand over his mouth to stifle a laugh. The man seemed to be struggling to maintain his composure for some reason.

“Look I don’t know what you’re on about but it’s getting late, I have things I need to get back to.”

“So you aren’t even going to let me thank you for your help?” A third voice said. The voice was right next to Henry’s ear. It was Cassius, from what Henry could gather, he’d been there a good amount of time.

Henry grabbed his chest and sputtered for a moment. Grom tried his best to treat Henry’s near heart attack with the respect it deserved but even his mighty façade faltered. Cassius didn’t even try, the man was laughing hysterically.

It took a good while for everyone, Henry included, to calm down. Henry took the time to look over Cassius. The man had his trademark silver daggers around his legs, but he had added a rapier at his waist. His clothing also seemed a little bit fancier, now that Henry had a closer look at it. Had he become a full inquisitor?

“You utter bastard, you nearly gave me a fit!” Henry said.

“You need to work on your hearing.” Cassius said, smiling. “Look, Do you want to talk on your way out? I realize you must be busy what with your mage business.”

“I’ll leave you two to it.” Grom said, standing up and walking casually out of the room.

Decisions:
1. “How’ve you been Cassius?”

“How’ve you been Cassius?” Henry asked, trying to gain some semblance of control over the encounter.

Cassius had already begun to leave the room, and motioned excitedly for Henry to follow along.

“That’s Inquisitor Cassius now, I’ve completed my training and I’ve been fully accepted into the order!” Cassius said.

“I see you’re living the good life in the city, Fancy clothes and a pointy stick, quite the lordling you are ey?”

“I’m only wearing the fancy uniform because it’s required, it’s one of the things I hate about this job.” Cassius replied, a bit grumpily. “It’s not as useless as nobleman’s clothing at least. I really do enjoy the sword though, fantastic bit of kit.”

“How’ve you been?” Cassius asked.

“Pretty busy what with everything going on, and on top of that I gotta keep the kiddo fed educated and entertained. No one ever told me I’d get stuck with two full time jobs.”

“Grom finally told me when we arrived back, you’re a much better liar than I gave you credit for, ya asshole.” Cassius said, grinning and laughing the whole thing off. “Just don’t lie to me in the future would ya?”

“If I hadn’t Charles would be dead and I’d be dead or imprisoned.” Henry retorted.

“I don’t like liars regardless.” Cassius said. “It’s a bad habit to get into and you don’t get out of it once you start. Truthful and simple are the best ways to live I say.”

“I wanted to take you up on that drink you offered back in New Haven.”

“Fuckin hell, now you’re talking. Yeah I know a really good place we can get a pint at.”

Henry grinned, and silently apologized to Nessie for skimping out on here. Her little island in the middle of a shithole would have to wait till another time.

Henry set down the mug and continued his conversation with Cassius. The pub was buzzing with activity. At first Cassius had tried bringing Henry to a special place called the ‘black’ tavern. It had been crawling with other inquisitors and even Henry knew about how it was frequented by them. He’d made an excuse to avoid that place, and they had settled for here.

Cassius had been a bit suspicious of course but had eventually played along.

“Grom keeping you busy?” Henry asked.

“He’s not my boss at this point.” Cassius declared, holding up his mug in jubilation. “Ten years under his tutelage but I’m FINALLY free!”

The man was a bit buzzed, but so was Henry for what it was worth. Both of them knew that this would be their last drink, as both had enough smarts to know getting drunk anywhere was a horrible idea when one had enemies.

“So that’s it then, you just work on your own?”

“Been assigned a new partner for the time being!” Cassius said. “Got a big project coming up apparently. Though I can’t spill the beans I’m afraid. Heh.”

“So how the hell are you so sneaky? And can I be like that with practice?” Henry asked.

“It’s a trade secret.” Cassius coyly responded.

“No fun at all.” Henry said, leaning back in his chair.

“So how’d the fight with the werewolves go, I never got to asking either of you.”

Cassius’ expression visually darkened. He seemed to be dealing with a good bit of pent up rage, at least from what Henry knew of his own experiences. It was a bit terrifying to be completely honest.

“We wiped all of them out, no survivors. I was extremely happy none of those vermin managed to harm anyone else. But honestly the fact that a Cathar was afflicted was the worst part of that whole case. Grom said not to talk ill of the dead, but I can’t help myself.”

Henry wanted to object, and hell, with the alcohol flowing in his system he almost did. But caution and paranoia, as well as common sense, prevailed.

Henry sighed, remembering his talk with the Cathar before his sacrifice. Cassius didn’t know what the fuck he was talking about, and honestly, the man was acting like a child.

“I agree with Grom.” Henry said. “It’s not wise to speak ill of the dead. There’s no honor in insulting someone who can’t fight back.”

“Now I have to deal with two of you.” Cassius said. The man was displaying a rage Henry knew quite well.

“You alright bud? You seem to really hate werewolves.” Henry said, trying to defuse the situation.

“My father was one, okay?” Cassius said.

Henry shuddered, for a man to hate his family that much, for anyone to, it was inconceivable. It made him uncomfortable to say the least, and quite honestly, he didn’t know how to respond to this at all. He fought down his emotions and finished his beer in one go, then gently set the mug down onto the table.

“Look, Cassius, all that rage ain’t gonna mean much in the long run.” Henry said, quietly.

“What?!” Cassius said.

“Is getting angry going to fix anything?” Henry said.

Cassius quieted down, thinking. The rapid change gave Henry emotional whiplash.

“I don’t want to talk about it.” Cassius finally said. “Look, sorry about acting up like this… maybe we can talk some other time.

With that, the Inquisitor got up, paid their tab, and left. Henry sat there and dwelled on his own thoughts. Everybody had their problems, not acknowledging that was foolish. Cassius was kind of a moron wasn’t he, dwelling in his rage without doing anything to fix it, or let it go.

Henry picked up Charles from Rosa, and was happy to learn that the two had a rather productive magical training session. Charles was beginning to become comfortable with his mage sight, far faster than most apprentices. Henry felt pride and also a bit of unease at this, but he couldn’t exactly put his finger on why that was. He wasn’t… intimidated by a mere child was he?

Rosa retreated back into the church’s healer’s abbey without saying another word. Charles later mentioned that she’d said that she wanted to tell him something. Henry didn’t know what any of that was about, and decided he’d figure it out when he had free time.

The rest of the evening passed by quickly. Henry salted as much of the fish as he could, finally retreating to his bed. Charles slept on a straw pile that had been hastily constructed. Henry would have to see about getting him a proper bed. Wouldn’t do for the kid to be poorly rested.

Overall it had been a productive day. Tomorrow he’d need to start setting for Charles to live in his little hovel, as well as prepare for Johnny and Ophelia’s arrival. If all went to plan they would be arrive late in the day, hopefully unharmed and unpursued.

Henry didn’t have any dreams that night, which was always welcome. He later awoke, rolled out of bed, and shook Charles for a couple seconds before the kid was also awake. It was nice to eat a bit more of the fish, even if the salt taste detracted from it. Henry wasn’t the greatest at preserving food, funnily enough. All the preservation chemicals he was skilled with were either poisonous, tasted horrible, or both.

Decisions: (pick one)
1. Head to undertown to get beds and supplies for Charles and Ophelia
2. Head to Lars the Corpse trader and hopefully get started on the work orders
3. Head to Nessies to ask about Sophie and maybe get a quick drink in
4. Head to Vermillion to see about securing some fancier clothing for the party
5. Continue magic training with Charles
6. Practice some sword play with Charles.

Henry worked his way to undertown, teaching Charles to avoid the sewer pipes that contained human waste and other horrible, horrible things. Henry knew of quite a few monsters that lurked down here, and they were far worse than horse sized rats.

Charles kicked a dog sized rat out of the way and spat at it before it scurried off. The kid seemed to have a decent memory of his time down here.

“Leave the poor bugger alone.” Henry said.

“Why should I? Its weaker is it not?” Charles responded.

“It might know people who aren’t weaker. Or it might know a bunch of weaker people who will make you look pretty weak when they come for revenge. Or there might be some sort of consequence to acting so rashly.” Henry said. “Better to avoid conflict when possible, you live a lot longer.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Henry and Charles ventured further into the sewers, and arrived at the bridge leading into Undertown. The gatekeeper, an elderly looking man, glanced at them and smiled, holding out a cup full of coins. Henry tipped the man a couple copper pieces. There were a few forces in this city that put even Vermillion to shame, the Watchers of Undertown were one of them. Henry knew that they had come to blows with the Lic’toron in the past, and Henry had a hunch that they had some sort of demonic protection. But for all he knew it could be fey influence. What he did know was that they were a real force within Celeste, even if they generally kept to themselves. He’d never really taken any serious interest in it. That’d be like asking where something in Black Alley had come from.

Charles kept close to Henry, a stark contrast from their time above ground. Henry smiled and tapped the back of the kid’s head.

“This is probably one of the safest places in the city kid.” Henry said. “People who cause trouble tend to die quickly and violently.”

“What?!” Charles asked.

“The place is protected by some serious magic, it’s why the angels have never found it, and why Cathars who have don’t last too long, you can’t commit any real acts of violence inside of Undertown, or the curse takes you.”

“Curse?” Charles said, alarmed. “Shouldn’t we get out of here then?”

“If you don’t cause trouble then there ain’t no issue. Just don’t start a fight down here, and you’ll be fine.”

Henry worked his way down to the remains of what had formerly been Smitty’s the place was a burned out wreck, and the neighboring buildings had also taken a good deal of damage from the fire. This threw a massive wrench into Henry’s day, as Smitty had been Henry’s goto for furniture and the like, now he’d have to find someone new. Undertown was a pretty big place but he doubted anyone as skilled lived here.

This fucking sucked, what were the odds?

“Did you know him?” Charles asked.

“As an acquaintance, I never knew him that well, luckily.” Henry said. “Still it fucking sucks, just happy the whole block didn’t burn down.”

“So what do we do now?” Charles asked.

“Well we find out if he’s still alive, common curtesy.” Henry said.

“Don’t you mean curiosity?” Charles asked.

“Sure.” Henry replied.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Henry asked a few of the locals, specifically the ones he was familiar with, exactly what had happened. Apparently a few nights back the place had burnt down, though luckily nobody had been inside when it had happened. Smitty himself hadn’t shown up in a few days, and nobody really knew where he’d gotten off to, a couple people joked that he’d gone off to drink away his sorrows.

It wasn’t very helpful to Henry, Smitty was a damned good maker of furniture.

Henry didn’t really have any leads in this matter, but he did have his curiosity.

Henry decided that looking further into this little incident would be a massive waste of his time, so he asked around and eventually found himself outside of a little shop called Bartru’s bargins. The place was a fairly plain building made out of wooden planks. It had a few lanterns outside of it filled with light runes, and a couple of windows that gave a fairly good view inside. The place was a bit dusty but otherwise was full of good looking furniture.

On the inside, Henry was greeted by a middle aged man who looked fairly excited to see them. He was wearing a smock of sorts with a bunch of pouches full of tools in the front.

“Feel free to look around, always have something interesting for sale!” The man said. Henry assumed that this was Bartru.

“Your shop isn’t going to burn down on us now is it?” Henry said, making a joke and some idle conversation.

“Oh dear heavens no, why would you say such a thing?” Bartru asked.

“A acquaintance of mine had his shop burn to the ground. Smitty’s his name, he’s a joiner and he makes some really nice furniture.”

“Ah I heard about that, some sort of spat between two families I think. Then again its bad to talk about people behind their backs.”

“What was that about families?” Charles asked.

“Some of the people in undertown don’t like each other very much.” Henry said. “I assume burning the shop down was a way to cause damage without getting the curse involved.”

The multiple trips carrying their new furniture were… fun, for lack of a better word, and by fun they were horrible. The stuff was heavy as hell for a start, Bertru hadn’t been joking about the quality, the things could probably stop a rampaging bull with how well built they were. Secondly it was like the sewers had suddenly been coated in oil. Thirdly by the end of the first trip Charles had nearly keeled over from exhaustion, But Henry wasn’t about to let him off that easy.

By the time they’d hauled all the stuff back to the house, Charles was gasping for air on top of the straw, covered in sweat. Henry was little better, covered in a couple bruises from slips and desperately trying to figure out how to make everything

Bertru hadn’t exactly sold them any instruction manual. He sighed before collapsing onto his own bed, he’d figure this shit out later, or maybe he’d just get Ophelia to do it. Speaking of which, he figured he’d need to set her up with a couple of easy jobs first, Undertown was always in need of skilled craftsmen, so that wouldn’t be too difficult.

Overall it had been a fun trip, taken a couple of hours, and resulted in only a minor amount of injury. It had also completely tuckered out Charles, the kid was already fast asleep. What a god damned slacker.

Henry got right to work, and found that it was a set of basic jobs, child’s play by his standards. But he wanted to do the best job possible, he prided himself on his work after all. He found that drafting the blueprints was fun, and after a quick glance at Charles, he began to add further details, explain processes and explaining how they would go about making them.

For Henry, this was additional, unneeded information. But Charles would benefit greatly for it. It wasn’t Henry’s greatest work, but it was far and above his usual. Perhaps taking on an apprentice was exactly what he had needed. He’d always had more work than he could get to, as people had learned of his skill, yet he’d been very careful with whom he chose to work for, and Vermillion’s protection had meant the people he could sell to was limited. He couldn’t contract out to any of the other families for starters, but the Cathars had left him alone, and that was a fair trade in his mind.

A couple hours passed and Henry lost track of time. By the time he was done it was about mid-day and his stomach was making the rumbles. He checked over to see that Charles had woken up and was rubbing his eyes.

2. Head down to see Duncan and thank him properly for helping you out, and apologize for getting his shack wrecked (during New Haven when the big werewolf attacked Henry)

Don’t want to look desperate, now, do we?

“Come on, let’s go pay a visit to Duncan, so you can properly thank him for helping save your life.”

“I thought he did it because you asked.” Charles said.

“That’s how you lose friends Charles.” Henry responded.

The two walked out of their now shared home, and wound their way down sewer tunnels and up into the city streets, eventually working their way back to where Duncan lived near the docks. His little repurposed warehouse tucked away behind a couple of rundown buildings. His wife, Lauren, was in their little yard that was in front of their house. It was more a spot of dirt with a couple of dead looking vegetables growing out of it than anything. From what Henry understood the woman was utterly horrible at growing things but she gave it her all regardless, while Henry respected someone who didn’t’ give up, the ability to cut ones losses was also a worthwhile skill, and sometimes people had to learn it for their own good.

Henry walked his way up to the front gate of the ‘garden’ and waited for a couple minutes as Lauren tried in vain to coax some life out of the plants with a life crystal. A small green gem filled with life energy. She must have been desperate as those things weren’t exactly easy to come by. Eventually Henry politely coughed, shaking the woman out of her failed attempt at Gardening.

“Henry?! Oh thank heavens!” Lauren said.

Decisions:
1. “have you considered that it might be the soil?”
2. “Is Duncan in? I wanted to thank him for everything, especially since we survived.”
3. “Something the matter?!”
4. “Hello to you too Lauren.”

The genuine concern in her voice immediately put Henry on edge, he figured Duncan had gotten himself caught in something horrible.

“Something the matter?” Charles asked innocently.

“Duncan told me the jist of what had happened, I was just worried about you two crossing the countryside what with all of the horrible things happening lately. I’m just happy you’re okay.” Lauren said. “As for Duncan and myself, we’re perfectly fine, thank you.”

Henry sighed in relief, good news for a change.

“So is Duncan inside?” Henry asked.

“Yes, that oaf is right where he usually is, in that smugglers basement of his.” Lauren said.

“You shouldn’t say that out loud.” Charles said, concerned.

“Child, I’ve been living with the man for fifteen years now and the church has never come down on our heads, I don’t think that will change any time soon.”

“Don’t tempt fate.” Henry said, before seeing himself inside.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++===

Duncan was sitting in front of a small desk crammed into the least noticeable corner of his house. The smugglers basement as Lauren had called it. It was noticeably more packed than the last time they had been there, and Duncan was scribbling furiously at his notepad.

“Hello Henry.” Duncan said, without looking up.

Henry noticed that one of the basement’s windows was ajar. Duncan had heard him talking with his wife.

“Hey.” Henry said. “I just wanted to thank you for your help, you saved my apprentice’s life.”

“Hrmph, so who is he, really? Now that the dust has settled I’d like some answers” Duncan said, “The whole thing stunk to high heaven Henry, and even though my gut was screaming at me to not go thru with it I did, cause we’re friends. I think you owe me that much.”

Decisions:
1. “Just a poor kid in over his head.”
2. “He’s really my apprentice Duncan.” (this time NOT a lie.)
3. “The less people know the better, Duncan.”
4. “He’s the royal heir. That’s why we had to leave so quickly.”

“He’s the royal heir. That’s why we had to leave so quickly.” Henry said.

Charles nervously glanced around, but Henry waved him off. Duncan wasn’t one to go spilling secrets, even if he seemed the type.

Duncan began to laugh before realizing that Henry was entirely serious. He finally turned to face the two of them, and took turns looking from Charles to Henry, and back to Charles again.

“For the first time in my life I have nothing to say.” Duncan said. “How’d you even?”

“Found the kid running from a rat, went right past my workshop.” Henry said. “Bit funny now, looking back at it.”

“I didn’t find it funny.” Charles muttered.

“What’re the odds of that? Outta all of the sewers… god’s gotta be sending ya a message mate!” Duncan said, half joking.

“Just dumb luck Duncan, even dumber since I decided to help him.”

“So you do have a heart in there somewhere, or is this some stupid plan of yers?”

“I ain’t dumb enough to go messing with the nobility.” Henry said. “Ain’t my place, ain’t my sorta thing.”

“Well didn’t you mess with the baron back in Yorkshire Proper?” Charles asked.

Henry chose not to respond to that.
