You walk in to the room the Darknuts were huddled in, immediately noticing a map on the table. Routes going between Castle Town and Kakariko with various lines scribbled on the parchment... plans for attack. And it looks like the numbers involved are... staggeringly large. Looking around, you also notice a chest on the top shelf of one of the bookcases. Strangely, there is still an odd chill in the room, in spite of the fire.

“Lynna, it might be a good idea to take that chest.” You point up to it as you carefully fold and put away the map. “Aveli, would mind helping me with something?” you ask the Gerudo girl.

“S-sure, what’s up?” she replies with a slight shiver.

“Even in spite of the fire, there is an odd chill in this room. I can tell you feel it too.” You move around, waving your arm in the air. “It may be best to see where it is coming from.”

As Lynna pulls down the chest, getting out of it a Red Rupee, you and Aveli move around the walls, feeling out the source of the chilling air. You end up at the edge of one of the bookcases, Aveli lifting you up as you notice the chilling air seems to come from the cieling... or at least, something inside it. You find that one of the boards there is fairly rotten and starting to crumble, and as you push it, bits fall down, revealing... a set of pipes? Metal pipes, with frost building up on them.

Seconded.

The logical thing would be them spreading heat around, but to make things colder or warmer I can't say. And that's before whatever magic might do with it.

Actually...

You draw your sword and tap it against one of the pipes. They’re definitely full of something. Perhaps some kind of liquid? Looking closer, you notice that some of the frost has fallen away... revealing odd writing along the pipe. Archaic Hylian...? Strange, some of the symbols look familiar, but those that do seem reversed, mixed in with others that are untranslatable. What’s more, they seem to be on top of older symbols... this is truly bizarre.

The pipes continue some ways down... perhaps going throughout the entire floor plan. You get down and start talking with everyone on what you’ve seen. Sheik scratches her chin curiously. “Clearly some sort of magic is at play, but what exactly would be the point of this?”

“Well... spreading out some sort of heating through the area would be the most logical choice. Spreading out cold, however, is truly bizarre.” you speculate.

“M-maybe the pups have something to do with it?” Aveli adds in. “They could be doing something magic here, and they’re better suited to survive the c-cold.”

“Well... maybe they’re working with that person we heard about.” Lynna comments. “Add to it... T- ah, Princess, that map you have... maybe they’re planning on using this magic in their attacks.”

“That could spell a lot of trouble. A large force is one thing, but one loaded up with magical ice weapons...” Horon mentions grimly.

>A. We should try to break a few of these, maybe it will slow down what they’re planning

“Well, we should be careful of what is inside those pipes. Be mindful of them, do not try to disable if possible. No fire or explosions.”

“Aww... okay.” Horon mumbles out.

“The magic could be used against us. The Darknuts should be aware of that, but we still have the element of surprise.” you remind everyone. “So, while we have it, we should finish investigating this floor.”

“Understood, Z.” Aveli replies, moving along out the doorway.

You see that each room seems to have at least one chest in them all, with scattered ruined books, rusted weapons, and, worryingly, a few snow-covered skeletons, while the rooms in the back are actually hallways leading into a back room... both of them locked. But to your luck, the chests in the rooms flanking the entrance both have keys in them, while the other chests each have a Red Rupee inside.

You take one of the keys and open the right door, heading through into... a surprisingly massive room. You step along slowly, listening for any sounds, and take in a few of the structures of the room. To the far right, there seem to be a large loading dock, closed off by several massive gates and what seem to be drawbridges. Before the loading dock, a large platform with a control box on the side of it... an elevator of some kind? Looking up, you see the elevator’s path is closed, locked perhaps. You also see a number of cannonballs piled up in some corners, barrels of powder stacked in others... and a few odd, hollow, rounded cones stacked curiously next to the elevator.

“Cannonballs, but where are the cannons?” Horon asks aloud.

“On the next level, presumably, or at least the one above that. There were a few parts of the fortress that seemed suited for cannon placement.” Sheik responds.

“We did see one of them carrying around a cannon.” you add. You also check up again, carefully trying to find the path of the pipes you saw earlier. You notice a few snowflakes fall at certain places... probably where the concentration of the pipes are highest. The room also forks in two places, one a larger hallway leading further back with suits of armor flanking it and a staircase on one side of it, while the other leads to an unlocked door to your left. There also seems to be an odd wall close to one of the corners of the room. Curiouser and curiouser.

You motion for everyone to move over to the suspicious wall. You tap against it, noticing it’s much more hollow than the rest of it... though how you open it, you’re not sure. Aveli walks towards the wall. “...Think there are any of those pipes in it?”

“I doubt it. Probably just a false wall.” you reply.

Aveli brings out her axe. “I can get through it then.”

“...Maybe hold off on that for now.” You move towards the unlocked door next, opening it and peeking inside. You see a chest... and then immediately after, a ornately armored Darknut patrolling the room. There are other sounds there too... lots of them. Might not be a good idea to go rushing in. Agh... and if you knock that wall down, you might alert them.

Let's also make a point to take out small groups and scouts silently, and look for opportunities to pick off larger groups or at least set up a better scenario.
>>
>>2887275
“We should scout out the area more first. If there are any smaller groups, we should make note of them and try to pick them off before they alert the larger ones.” you comment to everyone, carefully making your way to the other hallway. You could really do for a map of this fortress somewhere... though you suspect that one wouldn’t just be lying around in the open.

You carefully go past the suits of armor flanking the hallway, Lynna moving closer to you as she cautiously stares down the armor. “...I’m not the only one who feels like they’re being watched, right?”

“Ah don’t worry, stuff like that is intentional.” Horon mentions to her. “In addition to a show of strength and wealth, setting a hallway up like this helps keep people on their toes. Especially at night.”

Aveli takes a glance at one, her hands gripping her axe tighter. She then looks out the windows curiously. “...Was it snowing that hard when we got here?” she asks.

“There was that storm ahead of us... though given this area, there is no guarantee anymore that it is natural.” Sheik comments to her.

At the end of the hall you see another suspicious wall, along with another unlocked door. That wall should be hollow... but no telling what’s on the other side. Don’t hear anything, but best to stay on your toes. The next room also seems quiet, and peeking inside... seems like an armory of some type. You do catch a glimpse of a robed figure inside... but only one.

You quietly ask of your allies, “Aveli, Sheik, it might be best to try and single this one off and interrogate them. Can you two try to hold him down? We’ll go for interrogating, maybe we can get something useful out of it.”

Aveli nods. “No prob, Z.”

“On three then. One...” Sheik starts.

“Two...” Aveli continues.

“Three!” You open up the door for them, Sheik bolting inside, Aveli following after. You see the Sheikah girl pounce and land hard on the robed figure, only for her to, to her surprise, get thrown off of it and into one of the suits of armor. But Sheik’s initial attack is all you need for Aveli to be able to get her arms around the monster’s, trying to restrain it... and suddenly you realize what this is.

“Wizzrobe!” Horon exclaims, trying to keep his voice down.

Aveli’s able to keep him away from his staff, the one Sheik managed to knocn out of his hand when pouncing, but an eerie, mystical air seems to still surround the beast. It may be trying to cast some kind of magic!

“Aveli, suplex, then get out of the way!” you tell the Gerudo girl.

She goes as you command, lifting the rather light figure and slamming it into the ground before letting go and trying to get away, but she’s not quick enough to escape its retaliatory strike, a blast of freezing air knocking her back. A haunting call echoes through the room, the creature getting up and spinning around, leaping away from you all... but not quickly enough for you to lose track of it. You bring out your crossbow and point it at the monster.

“You’re not going anywhere.”

It almost catches you by surprise by making a dash at you, forcing you to step aside, but as you do you notice it’s going for the staff. You fire a couple bolts into its hand, Horon getting in and knocking the staff away as Lynna strikes the monster with her boomerang. You loom over it and hold your crossbow to it. It looks up at you, seemingly planning its next move.

You then hear a pained, shivering groan come out from Aveli. She’s still down, frost covering her clothes. “Agh... th-that... was s-s-smart...”

Horon holds up his hands. “Unless you want some burning robes.”

You hear Aveli groan again, Sheik coming to help her up. You glance at her out of the corner of your eye. The monster... starts to chuckle. You see a creeping mouth appear on its shadow-covered face. “Heehehehehehehehe...”

You motion for Lynna to take the staff away, then start your questioning. “What are you all planning? How many of you are here?”

The chuckle grows louder, creepier. A horrid, slimy voice tells you ominously. “The end of your kind. Dozens more than enough.”

“Blood Moon. Is that the ultimate goal here?” you ask angrily.

“So what if it is? You think you can stop it?” the creature chuckles out. You... start to feel a chilling air come out from it.

“Are you the one who enchanted the pipes in this building?”

[Hearts: 9/11]

[Bolts: 73/90]

Horon is likewise hit by the blast, but he quickly returns the favor by tossing a fireball at the monster, setting it on fire. Lynna quickly tosses the Gale Boomerang at it to put the fire out, the singed monster clenching its fist. “One... hundred...” its voice calls to you before its body finally fades away, leaving some magical materials behind.

Sheik next helps you up, making sure the frost is dusted off or you, the shivering Aveli gathering close to you. “W-what the heck d-does that mean?”

“Could just be trying to scare us.” Horon states, brushing himself off. Seems the warmth from that fireball helped keep the ice away.

“...Or it could be how many monsters are in this fortress.” Sheik states grimly.

“C-can we even manage that?” Lynna questions.

You stand, determination in your eyes. “We will make it through this.”

Aveli manages to shake off the chill she was feeling, though you can tell she’s still a little uncomfortable over what just happened. Still, you can’t slow down now, even if there are dozens more monsters roaming the fortress. You take a moment to investigate the area, seeing that there are still some magical remnants leftover from the Wizzrobe. There also seems to be a chest in the room, as well as several different swords, suits of armor, spears, bows, and... aha! Crossbow bolts!

You light the torch using some of the currently lit ones in the room and move over to Aveli. “Are you holding up okay?”

“D-don’t worry about me, Z.” she replies, forcing a smile. “A little chill like this I can walk off easily.”

Sheik’s eyes narrow. “...It would be unwise to try and play brave when you are not used to fighting such enemies.”

“I can handle myself.” the Gerudo girl responds, her tone more adamant, her brow furling.

You hand her the torch. “Even so, try to be careful. Can you help me look over these maps, Aveli?”

She nods. Seems that gesture calmed her a bit. You see that the map is different from the one at the entrance. A map of the entire Snowpeak mountain range... with several routes directing towards the fortress. Strangely, they do not seem to be troop movements, or at the very least, you would expect some to target the Zora Colony... but none do. They’re almost like...

“...Shipment routes?” Lynna asks aloud. “These are like the ones used at the town’s docks.”

“Perhaps that is what the loading dock is for.” Sheik adds in. “Though there may be more to this fortress than that.”

You rub your chin. “But what exactly are they shipping to here?” You glance over to the chest. “...Doubt that they would just leave it around like that, but worth a look?”

“Sure.” Aveli nods, walking with you, torch in hand, as you open up the chest.

Inside you find... a Hylian Shield? One in top condition, at that! Nice. But... clearly not what they’re shipping to the fortress.

Ask Horon if Din's sword is still guiding him, or if he wants to go sword and shield with the Hylan and Naryu's to continue his training. Those snowboarding shields probably aren't ideal for protection anyway.

We could use Din's, or one of the generic swords we found here alongside our own shield, whatever works better for us.

“So... might anyone need this shield? Lynna, Sheik, Horon?”

“Ah don’t worry, I’ve got plenty.” Horon replies.

“...If you use them up you may need an actual shield, Horon.” You narrow your eyes at him. “Further, do you still feel you are doing well with the Sword of Din? Do you want to try out a different style of swordplay?”

“Yeah, feeling pretty good with it.” he states confidently. “Don’t worry, Princess.”

“I too am fine.” Sheik adds in.

And so that leaves Lynna. “You think you can handle using a shield?” you ask the young woman. “It would be a good idea to have some extra protection, but do you think it may burden you down?”

“...No, I think I can handle it.” she replies, taking the Hylian Shield. “Thank you, Princess.”

“Then that is settled.” You head towards the next door, opening it slightly and listening carefully for any movement. You see, out of the corner of your eye, a chest sitting in one corner of the room, the rest of it looking like another armory. No commotion yet... wait, no, you hear something. Footsteps north of you. Several soft ones, and at least one pair of louder ones... and an odd dragging sound. Staying as hidden as you can be, you see what appears to be a figure made of ice-covered bones... two of them, both with frost-laden spears. >>
>>2891498
I think there are only our allies rolls, the monsters effectiveness is a response to them.

In any case this is going to be one hell of a scene.
>>
>>2891509
But we passed. And considering how we have got hurt even when passing rolls before it makes more sence for those to be monster rolls.
>>
>>2891518
Yeah the ones usually just mean we take damage, unless it's a non combat scenario. It's not quite the same logic as "the monsters rolled well", we can (and have) gotten hurt less directly.

You bring out a bomb. “Plenty of room here, so no chance it will break the cieling. Still, everyone, shields up.” You wait until the ice-covered stalfos start to move away from you all on their patrol route, then roll the bomb down their way. You then bring your shield up, and an explosion rocks through the room. You look up; the frost-Stalfos seem like they were knocked down... though the larger foe doesn’t look like it too much damage from that.

And you finally realize what that sound was. A gigantic ball and chain. It starts to stomp towards you. Horon gulps, realizing what the monster is. “Darkhammer!”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EARBhI9jt9s

Well, time for plan B. “Zas, help us out!” you comand, the Phantom Knight leaping forward. You back up, readying your crossbow, only to see the monsters toss one of their frost-covered spears your way. Thankfully you dodge, but you don’t quite dodge far enough, as once the spear hits the floor it shatters... and somehow spreads an icy coating all over it. While you avoid damage, you end up almost losing your balance as you fire a volley at the closest monster. Still, most hit, and force it back slightly.

[Bolts: 76/90]

Sheik is a good deal quicker, dashing around and tripping the other Stalfos before leaping out of the way as it tries to fling its spear at her. Another miss, though it keeps traveling, just barely missing Horon as well. He too almost loses his balance, but thankfully manages to toss forward a fireball, hitting the one Sheik knocked over.

Aveli meanwhile works with Zas, the two of them holding off the Darkhammer in the back, the Gerudo girl’s smaller stature managing to allow her to dodge under it and start hitting it in the back. And to keep the pressure on them, Lynna scores a direct hit with the Gale Boomerang, knocking the Stalfos back again.

“Tough punks, aren’t they?” Horon questions, the ice monsters reforming their spears and readying themselves to attack again. Doesn’t look like the scuffle is attracting any unwanted attention... yet, at least.

You need a certain setup with flammable fluids and cloths or something for that, or an enchantment made for it. I don't think passing a flame on the bolts will do that, might as well just tell him to jump in throwing flames. We he maybe should, but can wait a bit.

Sheik makes her way towards the ice Stalfos she tripped before, striking it with a draw-cut from her sword. But as she tries to move away, the monster surprises her by slamming its spear into the ground beneath them both, causing her to slip and fall on her back, the monster delivering a sharp kick in her side, trying to reform another ice spear.

“Horon, time a fireball with my crossbow’s bolts!” you shout out, Zas and Aveli still holding their own against the Darkhammer, the beast’s massive ball and chain crashing into the walls, knocking over suits of armor as they fight.

Horon nods. “On three then! One...”

“Two...”

“THREE!”

As Horon flings the fireball at the monster over Sheik, you launch two volleys of bolts at it, timing it just right so that when they strike the monster, the fireball hits them, managing to ignite a few. The ice-covered Stalfos’s body collapses, breaking in two and starting to melt, allowing Sheik enough time to get away. You too think it would be best to stay off the icy floor, and move out with Horon. The tinder might not be enough to stay lit, but with that perfect timing you were able to deal a fatal blow to one of them. The other clearly notices your plan, though, and instead hops over to the patch of ice its ally created... and it starts skating on it, somehow, quickly moving around and getting behind you.

You fire another volley at it, but while you hit true, the monster narrowly misses a stab at your shoulder with its spear... and for good measure, manages to whack your shoulder as it pulls the spear back, a chilling pain traveling down your arm. Lynna manages to whack the beast’s head with her Gale Boomerang, hitting it hard enough that it seems to spin it around. With that distraction, you unleash a volley at the beast’s neck, severing the head from the rest of the body. It doesn’t fell the monster, but it does manage to disorient it, causing it to trip and fall.

One down, one in disarray, but the Darkhammer is still in top shape from the look of things. This could get ugly quick if you are not careful...

You bring out your blades and carefully dart towards the monster, knocking it down again with one strike as you stab the head with the other, then slash away and finally fell the monster. You then bring your attention to the Darkhammer, putting your swords away and quickly firing a volley at the beast. A few bolts manage to get through the armor, catching its attention. Unfortunately, that attention means it sees you as a target, and the Darkhammer swings up its chain mace, launching it towards you and Horon. You manage to avoid the massive ball, though Horon isn’t so lucky, getting smacked down with a hard blow, letting out a yell of pain. And even less fortunately, as the monster pulls it back, it manages to get your leg as you hear Horon shout, tripping you and knocking you down.

You fire another volley at the monster as you get back to your feet, as Sheik dodges around it and tries to get at its legs though getting kicked away as she gets a few hits in, but unfortunately, this one doesn’t get through the holes in its armor, the bolts bouncing harmlessly off it. Another swing of its chain mace hurls at you, but this time you’re prepared. You dodge by rolling aside and fire a retaliatory volley, this one actually managing to get through, bolts striking at the neck and side of the arm of the monster, with Horon following up by launching several fireballs at where your bolts stick, igniting them again... though in doing so, he’s an open target for the monster pulling its ball back, the chain tripping him up and causing him to land on his back hard.

[Bolts: 58/90]

Lynna however again manages to dodge, and flings her Gale Boomerang at its helmet, hitting it with enough magical force to leave it dazed. Aveli and Zas see their opportunity, and the phantom has her jump onto his shoulder, with him hitting low and causing it to stumble as Aveli leaps off Zas and stabs downward with the Biggoron’s Sword into the beast’s neck. It lets out a gurgling sound as its throat is cut, falling to its knees, finally slain. The Gerudo girl stands on its chest, pulling out her blade and lifting it up triumphantly, panting slightly. “H-heh... hah... guess that’s one more down. How many left?”

“Uuugh... too many if they’re going to be like this.” Horon groans out, getting to his feet again.

As the monster’s body vanishes into blackened mist, you notice that the weapon still remains, as does the armor. Aveli hops down, and you think to ask her, “Aveli, do you think you might be able to use that chain mace? I know you already have a couple heavy weapons, but do you think you might be able to use that one as well, or should we just leave it?”

“Hmm... give me a bit.” she replies, picking up part of the chain and testing how well she can pull it. As she does, you tell everyone to rest up and recover as best they can as you search for some more bolts to replace your spent ones. To your luck, there is a large cache of them in the room, underneath a few spare crossbows. You also manage to find a few bombs, covered in some frost, but still usable after you brush it off.

[Bolts: 90/90]
[Bombs: 10/10]

As you investigate the room, you see a northern door, locked... and also an odd switch in the middle of a support beam. Curious. Lastly, you open up the chest in the back corner...

And inside is a [Piece of Heart]!

“I doubt I could do as well with it as you, Aveli.” you admit. “It is not just a matter of strength. While I may be able to move it around, I do not think I could use it that effectively as I am not as experienced with such heavy weapons.” You then get an idea. “...Perhaps I could help you with it, if you would like. With these gloves, do you think you may be able to utilize this weapon better?”

She rubs the back of her neck. “I mean... I guess it wouldn’t hurt. You know what, Z? Sure, let’s give this a try.”

You give her the gloves, and Aveli has an even easier time with the chain mace, able to hold up the mace portion one-handed with little effort. You then look to Lynna, offering her the Piece of Heart. “You have one already, correct? So this would make two.”

“A-are you sure, Princess?” she asks sheepishly.

“It will help keep you safe, and with you safe we stand a better chance against the foes here, especially with your healing.” you explain to her, giving her a friendly smile.

She humbly takes the Piece of Heart. “Thank you.”

With that set, you look back to the switch, Horon investigating it as well. “This support beam is larger than you’d really need for a floor like this.” he comments, tapping the side with his fist. He pulls it back in surprise. “...Princess, it’s cold.”

You place your hand on it as well. There is a noticeable chill coming from it. “Stands to reason that one of the pipes are in there. But why would there be a switch on it?”

“Maybe... it can shut off some of the pipes?” Horon speculates, scratching the top of his head. “I’ll give it a go.” He presses the switch, and above you there is a noticeable shutting sound... followed by a few others. Curiouser and curiouser.

...You also hear noise from above you. Suspicious noise. “Horon, press it again, quick.”

He does so, and after a moment the noise stops. Well, that was a close one. Still, one more mystery of the fortress. Though... wait, you hear more noise. Some coming from the other side of the locked door...

...And a large fist hits against it twice. “Watch your elbow, you big oaf! Third and last time!” a growling voice calls out from the other side of the door. Catching on, Aveli lets down the mace and starts dragging it away across the floor. “That’s better. Stay on your patrols or the Prince will have a word with you.”

“Hmm... think there could be a switch on the other side?” Horon questions.

“The only way there would be through that room.” Sheik states, pointing in the direction you came from.

“Give it a shot, but make sure you do it in one go. We can not have them catching wind of what we are up to.” you tell Aveli, backing up. She gives the chain a good swing, then throws the made at the wall... smashing through it, the wood splintering into tiny pieces. Well, that clears that up. You all hurry through, finding that Horon was right; there is a switch on the other side of the wall. Well, too late to use it now.

You see that this is a curved corridor, with several windows letting light through... and that it is also exceptionally more chilly than the previous room. There are piles of snow, icicles jutting out from the ceiling... and several skeletal remains under a few of them. Walking around, you also see a door leading north and one to the east, to the room you heard the voices from. Doesn’t seem like there are as many this time, though you can still hear movement from that room. The eastern door is locked, while the northern one is not. Outside, you see the snowstorm is getting a bit worse.

Aveli seems to shivering more, sticking close with everyone in spite of the heavy weapon she’s carrying around. “B-betting m-more of those pipes are above us.”

“W-would be r-reasonable... a-as-ssume...” Lynna replies, shivering as well, rubbing her nose.

You feel it a bit morbid, but checking on the skeletons may help you prepare for what’s to come. You get the torch out again, lighting it and handing it to Lynna. “Lynna, Aveli, can you bring the light over here for a bit.”

The young woman gulps, but does as you ask as you brush away some of the snow from the corpse. You let out a slight gasp as you see that its ribs are collapsed, broken as if struck by something moving at high speeds. There is still a bit of frozen meat inside it... though decayed so far they you couldn’t tell if they were organs or not. Lynna holds her hand to her mouth as Aveli, shivering less thanks to the increase in heat, turns it over. An exit wound, shattered spine and all, the body only really held together by the ice around it.

“...Call me crazy, but remember those strange shells we saw earlier?” she asks you.

“You... think they might have done this to him?” A truly morbid thought. The corpse is old, but... it may fit the wound you’re seeing. You clap your hands together and give the person a silent prayer, then finally move north. You quietly open up the door and peek inside to find... a study? Several shelves of books, a large table with a few laid out on it, and... an open fire. Someone is in here. You look around, seeing the form of a Darknut... sitting down at a desk, reading something. He’s not in armor, but robes... Wizzrobe robes, at that. He seems too caught up in his work to have noticed you.

You and Sheik plan to catch the foe by surprise, the two of you slowly opening the door. Sheik silently steps closer, preparing to take the monster by surprise, as you prepare to cast Farore’s Wind. There’s a tense, silent moment when Sheik finally gets close enough to pull out one of her daggers. She brings it up to the monster’s throat. “Don’t move.”

To its credit, it obeys, slowly standing up... but then you notice it prepare some magic and in a quick motion fire a chilling blast from its hand towards Sheik’s, knocking the dagger from her hand. It then, surprisingly, teleports some distance away, towards the other end of the room, starting to head to another door. You use Farore’s Wind to get ahead and block it off, the Darknut stopping. You also notice that, while large, it is far slimmer than others, clearly not much of a brawler. And it isn’t quick enough to escape from Sheik a second time, the Sheikah girl pouncing on it and bringing it to the ground.

The rest of your allies make their way in, the monster, to your surprise, realizing when it is outnumbered. “...Curious. Take it you are the girl giving our Prince so much trouble.” it tells you in an oddly calm, but still gruff voice. It sounds a good deal older too. “Expected you to be bigger.”

You frown at the beast. “Clearly I am more than you could handle.”

The monster rolls its eyes at you. “Catching an old dog by surprise with your sneaky friend here. Quite impressive.”

Sheik holds another knife to the monster with her other hand, placing the one he hit to her cloak, trying to rub off the frost on it. “You are not in a very good position, Darknut. It would be unwise to keep acting this way.”

He snorts at her. “You get nothing if I’m dead, you damn dumb kid.” He looks around. “...I hope you all know that you are on a time limit now. If you have questions, you better ask them quickly.”

Time limit? Damn, how could he have set an alarm? Guess you have to make this quick...

“Okay pup, here’s a question, how long we have?” Aveli asks the Darknut.

He snorts out. “Couple minutes. Maybe less.”

“Your call, Z.” the Gerudo girl tells you.

Not a lot of time to ask questions. Still, a few ones come to mind...

>A. Where would a map of the fortress be?
>B. The pipes filled with ice, what is their purpose?
>C. You know magic, how?
>D. What are you and your allies really planning?
>E. Just how many are in the fortress?
>F. Something else?

Be careful on how many you ask.

You kneel down to the monster and ask him, “A map to the fortress, where would one be?”

He looks around. “Main tower has the floorplan. Second floor, hidden study in the back has a spare copy.”

“Hidden room where?”

“Past the main tower. Hallway.” he grunts out.

That will come in handy, but you have a ways before you get to there. “What is the purpose of the pipes?”

He’s quiet for a moment, Sheik holding the blade closer prompting him to talk. “Research.”

“Research into what?”

“We have goals beyond just this land, Hylian. Do try to be careful around them, lest you want a chilly grave.”

“Details.” You cross your arms and glare harder.

“Hmnh. Previously was a heating system before an ally went for something more useful. The water in the pipes were warmed and spread through the fortress. Now, the magic has cooled it beyond its freezing point. Very useful little trick.”

“...The pipes are filled with ice?” Horon asks, confused.

“No. Fluid.”

Horon glares. “You said they’re frozen.”

“I will not repeat myself.” the Darknut growls.

“Just what are you and your allies planning, then?” You ask next... but you hear footsteps coming in the distance. Guess you are running out of time...

“To claim what your kind has forefit. Or so the Prince says.” he replies with a roll of his eyes, as if he’d heard far too many speeches on such a thing before.

>A. Everyone, to the door! Block it off!
>B. Sheik, drag him into the next room with us
>C. Let him be, get out of here while you can!
>D. You could give him an offer...
>E. Something else?

“Sheik, drag him into the next room with us!” you command, opening up the door, much to the surprise of both your allies and the Darknut. You open it up and hurry everyone inside, Sheik and Aveli picking up the monster and hurrying him in with you as you slam the door shut. This room seems to be another study, or... no, perhaps a lab of some sort? You see several vials of bluish liquid among several other beakers and a couple microscopes. Strangely, there are even a few swords, small axes, daggers, maces, various kinds of equipment... and an odd canister of some sort, similar to the shells you saw earlier. Agh, but your foes are still closing in.You, Lynna, and Horon take what you can to block the door off.

“Are you sure that was wise, girl?” the Darknut questions you. “You are now trapped here, in a place you only barely understand, with someone who is clearly not your ally.”

“You were heading into this room anyway, were you not?” you ask the Darknut. “You may be able to help us still. We could make a deal.”

He snorts. “A deal. You are far, far too young to really know what you are getting into, girl.”

>A. What is in that canister then?
>B. We can let you go if you distract them, we will not bother you again
>C. You are smart enough to see that what your Prince is doing is wrong
>D. You are still a hostage, you know
>E. Something else?

>C. You are smart enough to see that what your Prince is doing is wrong

>D. I'm certain older folk wouldn't have any more of a clue, but they may be too cynical to think they could do anything about it. Think of this as an opportunity for a better path. Even for your people.

>Now, tell me what I'm getting into, and we'll see what we can do.
>>
>>2900778
“What exactly is in that canister, then?” you question, pointing over to it.

“Years of research put to good use at last.” he replies with a smirk. “Try to be careful with it.”

You hear figures approach. They’re in the other room. You’ve got a decision to make, and need to make it fast. “You are smart enough to see that what your Prince is doing is wrong. At the very least, you do not seem all that invested in his little war against us. We can help you, if you agree to help us. An opportunity to a better path, to use your research for something else. Maybe help your people in another way. Y-”

“You are entirely too optimistic, girl.” he barks out, cutting you off. “Clearly youth has that effect on all kinds.”

“What am I getting into, then?” You try to keep your voice calm, but his dismissiveness is irritating you quite a bit.

“You are part of the losing side. Not only is this entire Kingdom on the verge of collapse, your kind will last only until the new moon. I bare no ill will against you personally, but I need not pretend that I will gain anything by joining you. If YOU were smart, you would abandon this land quickly. You are young. Make due with the lands north of here. Save yourself and your little friends. That is the kind of kindness I can offer to you, Hylian.”

They’re almost at the door. Agh... damn it. “I am not abandoning this Kingdom. If you do not want to assist us, we can make a deal. We let you go, you distract them, we will not bother you again.”

There’s a knock on the door. He stares at you silently. He motions his head towards the other door.

>A. Everyone, start moving
>B. We COULD stay and fight...
>C. I want that canister too
>D. Something else?

With a smile, you tell the Darknut quietly, “Thank you.” You then move quickly to the other door, everyone following, as the knocking gets louder. You close it quickly as the Darknut grumpily moves the furniture out of the way.

Closing the door quietly, you press your ear to it and listen in. You breathe out a quiet sigh of relief as he simply states he wants to hand over the canister, two other voices arguing with him over how he seems careless. Oh. Oh... you hear mention of intruders from them. Looks like they spotted Aveli’s work on the other wall. So they’re on alert now.

“Guess there are some good pups out there... for relative definition of good.” Aveli comments.

You turn around, investigating the room you ended up in. Seems to be a storage room, with several crates, barrels, boxes, and... a few empty canisters again. On the opposite end, to the west, you see a door, and checking where it leads, it appears to be a large stablehouse. Inside... massive wolves, resting on the ground. The Darknuts’ mounts. Several other monsters as well, even a few Moblins and Bokoblins tending to the wolves. The snowstorm has picked up, too. There is another door to the south, guessing that one will lead to another hallway, guessing it’s opposite of the main tower.

Lynna rests against one of the boxes. “C-close one.”

Horon rubs his head.“Okay, let’s plan out all we know. The Darknuts are manufacturing this magic cold water stuff here somehow, and I’d guess putting them into canisters.”

“They seem to know about the new moon... the Blood Moon the Great Deku Tree is worried about.” Sheik continues.

“Working with the Man with Masks, somehow. Planning a massive attack on Hyrule.” You rub your chin. “I would guess the canisters are a form of magic ice weapon... perhaps like the fire-based one your people have, Aveli.” you comment to the Gerudo girl.

She nods. “Was thinking the same thing. Dozens more monsters are in this fortress, too. And we are barely past halfway through the first floor of the area, with the map above us.”

“Then let us make haste. We have much to do to stop their plan and save Hyrule!”
