General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.
Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

Pokemon:
Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roserade)
Dice (Croconaw)
Sorbet (Vulpix)

Location: Akaneki, the Fighting Gym

Recently: Herb and company face a difficult triple battle for the gym.

“Dice! Scary face!” You shout. Dice has increased his speed dramatically with the use of Dragon Dance, but you want to increase the gap between your team and theirs even further. This isn’t just to help Dice, but the slower Wailord and Tirtouga as well.

Dice slithers, rolls, spins, and leaps to face his opponents. He catches Hariyama with a glaring Scary Face. The execution itself isn’t particularly noteworthy, but the way he looks right now after Chinchou went down, and how pumped he is, it makes his scary face send a small chill even through you. He quickly rolls backwards into a position to use it on Hitmonchan just as the new pokemon gets it’s bearings, and startles it with a quick but mediocre display a second time. Still, it works. Both pokemon he targeted are shaken.

“Push forward, Wailord!” Laki yells out. “We’ve got to secure advantages when we can.”

Both teams are now getting squished near the bottom quarter of the ring. The close quarters gives an advantage to melee fighters. Wailord’s size allows it to block most of the arena width, and because it’s been working on just getting forward, it’s free to let Dice or Tirtouga passed if they want to get out now.

“Your strategy is easy to see through.” Kabo says glibly. “Po, you know what to do.”
“Right! Sawk, Retaliate!” It’s trainer commands. Sawk, who has been watching Dice this whole time, turns and strikes at Wailord. The huge pokemon cries out in pain as the trained fist almost stops Wailord’s advance. It certainly slowed it, and caused the huge pokemon.

“Hitmonchan, you too.” Jabo commands cooly. His pokemon lowers it’s head and raises it’s fist, trying not to let the scary face bother it too much. Again, like Sawk, it turns to strike Wailord. “Thunder Punch!”

Being such a huge pokemon, it’s hard to miss. Wailord roars out at the punishment and stops in it’s tracks. He even recoils a little. Those two blows, while not graceful, were still very damaging.

“Wailord!” Laki yells in concern and frustration as her pokemon is ganged up on.

“Hariyama, don’t let up on that Wailord!” Ailano commands. “We have them figured out now. Overwhelm their fighting spirit!”

“No!” Hana yells. “Tirtouga, stop it!”

Hariyama pulls it’s open palm back for a slap. Tirtouga leaps out to try to stop it, and thanks to the lowered speed if the fighting pokemon, is able to clamp down onto it’s arm with a Bite attack!

But Hariyama is strong. Very strong. It strikes wailord with a Wake-Up Slap even with the turtle hanging off it’s arm.

Wailord is barely hanging on. The three moves in succession really hurt.

“Damnit. They’re toying with us.” Laki refers to her and Wailord, not your team at large. “They want me to know that we can’t use Rest again. Not with moves like that able to stop it. That really pisses me off.”

Hana, at the same time, looks discouraged. Her attempt to save Wailord from that extra attack didn’t work.

Dice has an almost unhearable low pitched growl as he angrily but slowly approaches all three fighting pokemon who have lumped themselves together in a defensive formation. The pokemon look a little spooked as he comes closer with that wild look in his eyes and bared fangs, but the trainers seem relatively calm.

Okay guys. We had 2 moves per turn, but with this scary face, I’m wondering if we could lead with a Dragon Dance, boost our speed further, and then have the ability to pull 2 more moves before the fighters go.

So I’m going to say:

>Dragon Dance!

then

>Aqua Tail on Hitmonchan, knock it out of the ring!

to get rid of that Thunder punch against our 3 water types, and if we have a third move available

>Aqua Tail Sawk out of the ring too!

Sawk’s muscles gleam under it’s sweat. That pokemon has buffed up a bit with Bulk Up, and despite the damage taken is still a very powerful and threatening opponent. Hitmonchan is fresh and eager, and that Thunderpunch it has is a major advantage against the three water pokemon on your side.

“Be ready, Hariyama. We know how to handle fast opponents, don’t we?” Ailano boasts.

Hariyama nods with enthusiasm, tightening it’s fighting posture and watching Dice closely.

“Sawk, hit that Wailord with-”

No time to think too hard. Dice moves too fast and won’t wait for you if you take too long. At least, that’s how it seems.

“Dice! Get Sawk! Now!”

Hariyama smirks and opens it’s palm.

Dice rushes forward, but you quickly add an addendum. “Natural Gift!”

It’s a shock to everyone, including Dice. He flails in his mid-air jump, and snarls at the unexpected order for a ranged, special attack. He listens, but just barely, and the psychic blast of energy powered by his berry only grazes Sawk.

Still, with the unexpected attack and given the damage it’s taken, Sawk stumbles for a second. Most of it is from the surprise, but some of it is from the sting.

Dice barks and growls in frustration. He wants to get in close and unleash everything. You feel like he's growing too frustrated to listen properly.

“Dice, Scratch attack on Sawk and then get out of there. Hit and run!”

“He’s trying to finish off the injured.” Jabo informs Po. “A wise, but predictable strategy that can be countered to our favor.”

“Sawk, Endure!” Po commands after taking in Jabo’s comment.

“Hariyama, be ready!” It’s trainer commands.

Dice dives in at Sawk. You don’t even have time to cringe at the expected failure of his attack as he moves too quick even for Sawk’s Endure to be used. Dice seemingly teleports through his opponent, landing on the other side. Endure only kicks in a microsecond after, at which point Sawk seems to fall to one knee and a hand.

Hitmonchan prepares to strike out, lightning crackling from it’s fists.

Laki grits her teeth, but manages to keep her anger under control. You can see the sobriety of calm thinking change the course of her decision making from whatever angry lashing out she had originally planned. But like Dice, she’s teetering on the edge. “Use Soak on as much of the ground as possible!” She commands.

Wailord begins soaking the ground all around the three fighting pokemon, and then in as much area of the crowded, small section of arena that’s left to fight in with Wailord blocking most of the rest. But why?

It becomes clear when Hitmonchan strikes at Wailord. Thunder Punch! The electricity is mostly expelled through Hitmonlee’s fist into Wailord, but because the ground they’re on is soaked, Wailord, Hitmonchan, Hariyama, and Dice all get a small taste. Dice and Hariyama are too far for it to be much damage, but it did count for a tiny bit.

Wailord cries out and collapses. At the same time, Hitmonchan reels back in shock from the electrical power.

As soon as Dice stabilizes his momentum, he turns around and begins rushing around the other team looking for an opening and, hopefully, waiting for a command on when and where to strike.

Hariyama’s attack, which was meant for Dice, flies wide at the open space he was once it. In seems almost comically late thanks to Dice’s incredible speed. A small shockwave of energy is expelled from Hariyama’s open palm, but it seems like too uncommon of a move for you to identify. But what really bothers you is the studying look in Hariyama’s eyes. It’s watching how Dice moves and trying to learn. That pokemon is clearly an observant fighter.

“Sawk, come back!” Po commands. “Good job, but it’s too dangerous to continue.”

Sawk offers a feeble bow before vanishing in a flash of pokeball light.

It’s only out of the corner of your eye that you see Tirtouga, right in the corner of the ring, use some sort of Ghost move. You think Hana called it Curse. She gives you a sideways, apologetic look for her pokemon being so outside of the fight right now.

(continued)
>>
>>2897264
“Sorry!” Hana says as Laki retrieves Wailord. It's down to two on two. Dice and Tirtouga against Hariyama and Hitmonchan.

“Don’t worry about that right now!” Laki growls. She’s not mad with Hana because she wasn’t there to support Wailord, she’s worked up at the fight itself. "Don't let up! If they put us on the defensive, they'll crush us!"

Dice roars in frustration. He’s usually so mellow and silly, but this creature in the ring is a whole new side to him. You aren’t sure how to handle this. He seems completely gone now with Wailord out of the fight. He’s zeroing in on Hitmonchan.

>Dice! Listen to my voice and calm down. It’s just a battle

I guess ice fang still is an ice type move even if it can’t freeze due to his ability. And afterwards, we can zip Dice to the far end of the arena to snipe with water gun.

Also, Rage raises attack, which is already pretty near max, so it isn’t a great idea I don’t think.

I'm honestly kinda worried that if we told Dice to use Rage, he'd actually kill someone.

“Dice! Rage!” You say, hoping that letting him loose is the right move. Dice might be very angry right now due to how he gets when a teammate is knocked out, but he’s still Dice.

“Hitmonchan, Mach Punch!!” Jabo exclaims. Hitmonchan quickly zooms at Dice. Both pokemon collide in a zooming approach that your eyes don’t follow. There are two loud, distinct smacking sounds. When they slow down, Hitmonchan comes stumbling forward and collapses onto the wet floor.

At the same time, Tirtouga comes running at Hariyama.

“Force Palm! Time to show them what you’re capable of!” It’s trainer shouts. It rushes at Tirtouga.

Hana punches out at the air in a surprising and rare show of public passion. “Shell Smash!”

Dice leaps at the downed Hitmonchan, but it’s trainer retrieved it much too early. That causes a few eyebrows in the audience to rise, but since it wasn’t even close and Hitmonchan stumbled down instead of suddenly being KO’d, nobody raises too much of a fuss.

Dice, still in a blind rage, eyes the two pokemon who are running at each other. Compared to him, they're moving in slow motion.

Dice leaps into action again, running at where the two will meet. It’s unclear which one he’s moving closer too.

His muscles show an incredible amount of definition and potential strength. Whoever he hits will definitely feel it, even if they’re both seemingly pretty strong in their defenses.

“Go Hariyama!” Ailano shouts, full of passion. “Judo their fighting spirit!’

“Go Tirtouga!” Hana shouts to match him. “Hurry and then we can hit it hard!”

Hariyama closes the distance and brings it’s palm to bear. That’s when Dice slams into him, sending him off balance and onto his face.

Tirtouga finishes Shell Smash just in time to be face to face with Dice. The two pokemon take each other in for a moment, and Dice sniffs just a tiny bit. The look in his eyes remains, but he doesn’t strike. He’s so feral and scary looking. Unstable looking, too.

To everyone’s shock, Hariyama slowly, desperately pushes itself up. It’s right by the edge of the arena.

“Are you sure, Hariyama?” Ailano asks. His boisterous attitude seems to waver a little. “That looked pretty rough.”

Hariyama huffs and takes up a fighting stance. That’s one tough pokemon! It spits out a berry seed, which explains some, but not all of how it’s able to stay standing.

Laki watches closely. “I don’t like this.”

Dice is facing away and doesn’t seem to notice Hariyama get up, but Tirtouga does.

Dice is bristling with energy. It’s more than just being pumped up, although that’s a big part of it. You feel like he’s on the verge of something big. He’s slowly grasping a new level of power that he previously wasn’t ready for. But at the same time, he looks like his burners can’t be set to low.

Hana hesitates a bit as she looks at Dice, but pulls it together, trusting that you and he know what you’re doing. “Tirtouga! Aqua Jet!”

“Take it and Reversal!” Ailano yells.

“Dice, Dragon Dance. You can do it!” You encourage.

Tirtouga lands the Aqua Jet, but the insanely powerful Hariyama still stays standing, just barely, and slams down hard with Reversal. Both pokemon fall backwards from the exchange.

Dice doesn’t seem to hear you at first. Gobble shouts out on your behalf to give a little extra help, and your other pokemon, minus Belladonna, join in.

The croc pokemon digs deep and goes through the motion of Dragon Dance. He’s a bit out of it now, so without the momentum of action he’s slow and going through the motions, but he begins to pick it up as you and your pokemon shout. He’s managing!

“Tirtouga! Get up!” Hana encourages. Laki joins in. Tirtouga looks in terrible condition from that blow, but is able to fight. Hariyama looks like it’s unconscious but still standing somehow.

Dice, whose been struggling to hold it together, begins to glow.

He almost seems to vibrate as he fights just to contain himself. He looks like he could fly around the room and through a wall if he stopped focusing. Anger and rage and confusion radiate from him.

You feel like the next few seconds will have a major impact on how he enters the next phase of his life. You only have precious seconds to act.

“Dice, listen to you!” You shout as the two pokemon still struggle to fight. “Focus on the water under you. Feel it flow under your feet.”

His head moves a few times, as if in a deep lucid dream.

“Good, good. Now think about the things you love to do.” You tell him, getting a little closer but still staying out of the fighting area.

“Having trouble?” Jabo asks from across in a smug, cool voice. He has a small look of fear you don’t understand until you see Laki give him a face on your behalf.

“Dice, focus on that and listen to me. Let the water’s flow inspire you. Feel it. Let your passions and loves in life inspire you. Don’t be angry that you can’t do what you love. Be passionate about it finding a way to do it anyway.” You have a few ideas of things he loves, like sniffing out and chewing up vispum, to playing with others, to just rolling around.

He glows and expands, becoming a Feraligatr. You’re so proud. He glances around, and then at his surroundings, and then his own claws and feet.

“Aqua Jet, again!” Hana shouts to her Tirtouga. The pokemon slams into Hariyama one more time, knocking it onto it’s back. Everyone watches, but it finally gives in and stays down.

“Congratulations!” You, Hana, and Laki tell each other for different reasons.

You rush over to Dice. He’s so huge now!

He sniffs at you, and cocks his head. He looks at you confused. Instead of embracing you in a hug or light nibble like you expected, he runs passed you to the group of pokemon. He leaps onto Cubone and opens his mouth wide. His jaws clamp down, then he shakes Cubone like a rag doll.

You almost panic before you see the annoyed look on Cubone’s aura and how she’s clearly not in any pain. She pushes and struggles to get out, but he just playfully tosses her around like a toy. Somehow, you think he thinks she enjoys this too.

“How are you feeling, Dice?” You approach.

He tosses Cubone up into the air and turns to you. His mouth snaps open and you find yourself completely in his grasp. He catches the upset and confused Cubone with his tail, and she slips out and runs behind the other pokemon while he’s distracted. You’re tossed up and then caught upside down by the leg.

“Okay, but how about a hug?”

The huge pokemon that was a snarling, terrifying beast before, is now so friendly and excited just to be in contact with you that he can’t seem to understand how a hug works. He just sort of semi-gently puts you on the ground and nibbles at you as you pet his big head. You laugh and ignore how slobbery your clothes are getting to the best of your ability. It’s pretty easy, given how happy he is.

You have a feeling Dice is going to show you some new and interesting stuff later.

“Yes!” Hana exclaims despite herself. She’s so hyped up. Laki holds up a hand to high five, and Hana slaps it hard with her robotic hand without noticing Laki’s pained reaction after. “Booyah! Who's my daddy?” She coughs. “I mean, who's your...nevermind. Good job, team!” She shyly and awkwardly comes down from her temporary high. “Woo. Go team.”

“Way to go!” You tell Hana as you give her a big hug. You try to pick her up and spin her around, but it’s more like dragging a washing machine across the floor. She laughs in excitement as you break and and picks up Tirtouga. “Way to go with Dice!”

Laki picks you up and spins you the way you tried to do with Hana. It’s a little emasculating, but not unwelcome. She sets you down. When you move in for a quick kiss, she stops you. “Not in the gym. Later.” She puts a finger on your lips before you can respond, seemingly under the impression you’re going to object. “Giving me your consent tonight is optional. Giving me your seed isn’t.” She whispers. Her smile lets you know she’s being playful and doesn’t actually mean it like that. Probably.

”Your fighting spirit is uncrushable!” Ailano congratulates your side. “Laki, you were a clever battler who kept focused when passions ran high. I thought we could rattle your anger and take your spirit that way, but you overcame it when we tried to frustrate you. Hana, your indecision and lack of confidence infects your team. But even with that, and losing almost three pokemon for your side, your decision making was fine and you didn’t let panic take over. Herb. Your strength and your weakness is the trust you put into your pokemon. You give them more freedom and autonomy that most trainers, but that also means their minds will drift and they may not always be in sync with what you’re thinking as a trainer. It’s a dangerous gamble, and relies on teaching them outside of battle more than the choices you make during the battle.”

“Is that wrong?” You ask, genuinely curious about his assessment.

“I can’t say it is after you won, but you need to be aware of the risks.”

“There was at least a 75% chance your pokemon could have gone wild.” Jabo adds. “You’re quite the risk taker.”

“You can’t measure it in percentages.” Ailano says in a tone that tells you he considers this just to be one of Jabo’s silly quirks. “What he lacks in personal passion, he makes up for in letting his pokemon’s passion come out.”

“You think I lack passion?” You ask, a little hurt.

He laughs and scratches the back of his head with his powerful, strong arm. “Well...”

You glance at Hana hugging her Tirtouga, still very visibly excited. Then to Hana, who somehow ended up in some sort of shadow boxing display competition with Gobble. You guess compared to them, you get less worked up.

“I noticed that too.” Po says, approaching. “What do you feel when you battle, Herb?”

“I feel...” You think. “Nervous, I want to push my pokemon to grow, but not too hard. I feels like when I was teaching my little brother how to ride a bike. I want to teach and guide them, but I know ultimately I need to let go so they can do it on their own. My pokemon have all the potential in the world and all have their own unique styles and way to fight, I just help them drag it out to the peak. They have a great battler in them is already there, I just try to help reveal it.”

“Wow.” Po says, impressed. Her chubby cheeks straining against her smile. “I really get that.”

Laki’s attention turns back to you suddenly, and she puts an arm over your shoulder.

“I don’t, but I’m an only child.” Ailano says. “In my eyes, you’ve got to be as passionate as possible. You and your pokemon need to inspire each other as much as you can.”

“Statistically your displays of passion cost you valuable planning time.” Jabo says, adjusting his glasses.

“So, um, did we pass?” Hana asks.

“You two did.” Jabo says. “We’re still making up our minds on Herb, here.”

“What?” Laki’s arm over your shoulder squeezes down, nearly cutting off your breathing. But she relaxes it. “Why?” She asks more calmly.

He gestures behind you. Dice is chewing on a punching bag. He takes a big ripping bite out of it.

“We need to know if you’re a pokemon trainer or just a pokemon aimer, bro.” Ailano says. A vision of Polu flashes over your mind.

“Oh no! I’ll pay for that!” You say before thinking.

“It’s fine. I bust like three of those open a month. We can fix it.” Ailano says.

“You did it once!” Po calls him out playfully.

Dice is really taking that passion thing to hear, huh?

“Dice, come over here.” You shout.

He comes over, clearing the distance in seconds thanks to his huge new size. He almost barrels into you, and drops the bag at your feet. Then he gets forgetful and starts chewing it up again.

“Remember what I said no mauling things Dice. I know you're still getting used to your teeth but still. If you need something to chew I can get you something after we're done here.”

Dice looks confused. Then, seeing all the disapproving eyes from everyone else, he stops chewing and looks very, very guilty. He lowers his head and looks at you, but keeps his eyes from meeting yours.

You pat him on the head. “We'll figure something out for you, alright?”

The guilty look he had fades as he gets excited at the attention. He leans in as you pat his head, then begins to nibble at your hands.

Gobble comes up and pokes Dice. Dice tackles him, and Gobble struggles to roll him like they used to.

“Well, he listens, I suppose.” Ailano shrugs. “I’m satisfied if you are.”

“Congratulations.” Po says, presenting each of you with badges. “You all qualify for the Fighting Spirit badge!”

“Awesome!” Hana almost shouts as she hugs her injured Tirtouga.

“Way to go.” Laki says to you, Hana, and her pokeball with Wailord inside.

“Now.” Ailano says. “To honor your accomplishment, and in recognition of your worthiness, we’ll teach the pokemon that fought here one move we know.”

“Umm, can we heal them first?” Hana says.

He laughs. “Of course. We have healing stations in the back. It will be about an hour, though.”

[Alright everyone. I'm afraid we'll have to call it there. Our next thread will be on Sunday. I'll of course be lurking, and in the mean time I want to get some quest things organized to crack down on continuity and ease of access issues.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the OP image? Should we have Herb's peers on it? Other info?]
>>
>>2898544
Thanks for running, Gobble! I think the current image is good, but you can always try something else if you found something you like.

It probably wouldn't hurt to mention the two girls he's in a serious relationship with in the OP. Herb has a lot of peers though, might be lengthy to summarize it all. If you change the image, a brief note of the badges he has might be good.

>Meditate

Okay guys, so, about those moves...

I think a lot of Bella’s moves we would want, they won’t know. (Except if they have a Brelloom I guess?) But a few fighting types do learn Laser Focus, a move which makes your next attack automatically Crit. If we can teach Bella to combo that with Magical Leaf, it will make for a devastating staple attack that pierces raised defenses.

As for Dice, Liquidation would be the strongest as far as raw power goes, but I’m not sure if they’ll know it. Waterfall isn’t far behind. But he might be pretty receptive to Outrage right now. Superpower will do if they don’t have any of those.
>>
>>2898695
Definitely gotta go for liquidation or superpower for sure. I'm not sure about bella though
>>
>>2898695
Laser Focus sounds like interesting utility, other moves I think would be cool to learn that match the style of this gym are Psych Up, Substitute, Double Team. For attack moves they might be able to teach Hidden Power or Giga Impact. In my mind all these moves have a martial arts flavor to them.
>>
>>2898873
I’d love to teach our Pokémon substitute and protect, if we get any of our Pokémon to learn them then they can help teach all the others.
>>
>>2898968
Dice learning protect would be pretty fitting.
>>
>>2898988
Come to think of it, I think we can have Bergmite help us teach our pokemon protect.
>>
Come Sunday, we should be certain to check in on Mace.

Also, that Breeder might be surprised she’ll be breeding a Feraligatr.

Also, let’s plan on taking Gardevoir to the Psychic temple. Maybe they’ll be able to help her?
