>Welcome back to a Song of Sand and Steel, the Game of Thrones narrative game. Our House is House Blacksand, a new house in the Dornish Marches, who are much despised by their neighbours. Our Lady is Lissara Blacksand, a beautiful femme fatale, who is a dab hand with a spear. We are currently on route to Storms End, on the invitation of Ser Cortnay Penrose, our brother-in-law

>This is a quest using the Green Ronin A Song of Ice and Fire RPG system.

The next morning comes, and you wake, the smell of cooking bacon and fresh bread filling your senses, as Carth stirs slightly, before waking as well. The two of you kiss briefly, before Carth gets up, and pulls open the shutters, letting the light into the room. You both dress, blinking in the suddenly bright room, before heading downstairs. Your children are already down there, the twins having brought their toy swords and shields, and are “dueling” infront of the dark fireplace. Seeing you enter, they quickly stop, and hurry over to the table, where Jelissa is showing Elia how to plait her hair. The group of you eat a quick breakfast, as the cavalrymen enter from the common room, where they have already eaten. Once you finish, the group of you remount, seeing a small bag of apples and a cask of cider have been added to the provisions atop of the carriage. You continue through the winding paths of the Stormland mountains, the peaks passing by, your cavalry riding in a column both infront of and behind you. The sun is nearly at its zenith, when Carth points to an archway over a turn off in the road, covered in vines and flowers.

“Down there is the old lands of Summerhall. Despite the ruins, it’s a beautiful place. We could stop there for lunch, if you wanted?”

“Oh, we’ll stop. It’s rare we get a chance to feel grass under our feet at home, and there’s bound to be places where we can stay.”

You turn off the Boneway, and down the somewhat overgrown road. It leads to a tall archway, flanked by two statues of rearing dragons, with both real and carved flowers wrapped around them. The children stare out at the statues as you travel underneath, the somewhat crumbling stonework still echoing the beautiful sculpture it once was. You ride through overgrown flower gardens, beds bursting out of their boundaries, vines creeping out from between the paving slabs that make the road. Leaning out of the carriage slightly, you can see the ruins of Summerhall, tall elegant towers coloured and broken open. Before long, you turn off the main path and travel towards a lake, with willow trees leaning over the water, and long grass blowing in the gentle breeze. Your small group ride up to a paved area, as overgrown as the rest of the grounds, but still flat and smooth. You climb down, and the children jump down after you, as Jelissa and a few of the cavalrymen begin unpacking food and drink, placing it on a small table, as the twins and Elia lean over the edge of the platform, and peer into the water, laughing and pointing at what appears to be small fish darting in the water, before scaring some ducks that swim out from the reeds.

You all sit down, and begin eating the cavalrymen letting their horses crop the long grasses. When you finish eating, you and Carth find a willow tree, you leaning on Carth as he dozes, as the children run around dropping small bread crumbs into water and letting the ducks come closer, watched closely by Jelissa. The twins are both trying to tempt a swan over, by tossing pieces of bread near it, as Elia walks over to you two.

“Mama, papa? Where are we? That place looks like a castle, but its all burnt? Are we allowed to be here?”

You move slightly, as Elia leans her elbows on Carth, staring across him at you.

“We’re at Summerhall Elia, it used to be a castle of the Targaryeans, the old kings before King Robert. They made it a place to have fun, and holidays. But there was a fire a long time ago, before I was born by quite a long time. So the Targaryens stopped coming here, and it became a ruin. When King Robert became King, he made it not a title any-more.”

Elia nods, and moves slightly, eliciting Carth to grunt. He opens his eyes, and blinks, before speaking.
“It’s said the Targaryens were trying to hatch dragon eggs. That’s what started the fire, their attempts at magic. King Aegon V desperately wanted dragons to return, he seemed to have forgotten all the issues the Dance caused his family. The best king Westeros had had for a long time died here, it’s why no-one wanted to rule here, but it’s pretty enough.”

Elia nods, and stands, running off after her brothers, who are poking at something in the pond. They appear to be reaching at something, before Calrin stands and yells out.

“Ma, can we have your spear! We want to get this!”

You push up off of Carth, causing another grunt from him, and walk over to where the children are poking their toy swords into the water, clanging off of something. As you approach, Cerran hurries over, grabs your hand and pulls you towards the water, and points. In the water, you can see something bright and metallic, a layer of mud and slime scraped away by the toy sword, a thin line of metal in the water.

“We were trying to get the big fish, and it swam in here!” declares Calrin, as Cerran resumes poking at the object.
“Yeah, if we get a long stick, like your spear mama, we can get it out and get the fish! Then we’ll eat it!” Cerran says from his prone position.

“Or keep it!” argues Calrin. Elia is bouncing from one of the low branches of the willow, bending it back and forth, clearly trying to break it off. You see Jelissa shaking her head, as several Cavalrymen are grinning at the antics of the children.

9,13,14 vs TN 12 (1 degree of Success)

You call out to one of the cavalrymen, and take their spear, guiding it into the water and slide it along the metal object, clearing a bright line in the water as you do so. You reach a rim, and flip the object on it's side, kicking up a large amount of silt and muck, obscuring your view. You move the spear across the water, feeling it hit the inside of whatever the object is, and lever the object up, pulling it out. What emerges is a very dirty, but still intact helmet, and to the disappointment of Calrin and Cerran, a somewhat large green fish splashes out of the helmet, and slides into the water, darting away into the disturbed water. Dropping the helmet onto the bank, you look at it more clearly, seeing a crescent moon mounted on the top of it as a crest. The helmet is well made, of still shiny steel, but has a clear breach in it, a large dent with a small gap in the side of it. Carth stands, and wanders over, peering at it...

You recognise the emblem, from your time in the camp of Roberts army, first seen in the stockade where prisoners were held, and later from a banner flown above a tent near Roberts own. The crescent moon is the symbol of House Fell, a house that was defeated by Robert at the Battle of Summerhall, where he slew Lord Fell and captured the heir to Fellwood. Later, the heir joined Robert's side, and fought alongside him. This must have been Lord Fell's helmet, no retainer would have the house emblem on their helmet. Carth raises his eyebrows, his familiarity with the Stormlands meaning he has come to the same conclusion as you.

"A remnant of the three battles? Interesting. But that seems to be all it is, I doubt it would be worth it to try to repair the thing. Though if we ever met King Robert, I'm sure he'd find it a great reminder of the campaign."

The children seem to have forgotten the helmet, and have returned to throwing small lumps of bread towards the swan, which had swum away from the shore with the commotion around the discovery.

"We'll keep it. We've got somewhere to store it at home, and as you said Carth, it's interesting at least. Now, we should get back on the road."

You all return to the carriage, with mild protests from the twins, mainly because they had managed to get the swan close enough to try feeding it from their hands, but Jelissa points out that swan needs to hunt down the fish that had jumped out of the helmet, so Elia, through giggles, charges the swan to defeat the “Fish of the Helmet”, before the group of you leave Summerhall, the ruined castle soon dropping out of sight, and once you rejoin the Boneway, the archway leading to Summerhall also disappears behind you.

The rest of the day is spent in fairly sedate travel, and by late evening, you are on the main road to Storms End. You have to stop, and make camp, but a small mountain glade provides a suitable campsite, and you spend the evening toasting apple pieces, cheese and bread for the children, as the twins throw small bits of wood into the fire, and Elia threads mountain flowers she has picked into yours, Carths, and Jelissas hair. You and Carth sleep in a tent, while Jelissa and the children sleep in the carriage, and you take full advantage of the privacy….

----------------------------------------------

The next morning, as you continue travelling, Jelissa asks if it would be worth stopping and cleaning everyone up, before you arrive at Storms End. She says it would take at most an hour, but the effort would certainly give you all a far more noble look. Elia then asks if it would mean taking the flowers out of Carths and your hair. Jelissa says it would require that, and Elia pouts…

"We should look our best, even if it does mean the flowers get taken out Elia. We'll stop an hour from Storms End, and make sure everything looks correct."

The journey continues for another two hours, before you can see on the horizon the imposing walls of Storms End. You pull off the road, and spend a good half an hour combing hair, smoothing clothing, and cleaning faces (in the case of the twins). Jelissa applies make up to you, highlighting your eyes and cheekbones, while Carth changes into a black and blue doublet. You remain in your traveling clothing, the weather is still too cold to wear your silks for the remaining hour long journey. After the cavalry have brought out a flag, and arrange it on the spear of the front rider. You all continue traveling onwards, and one hour later, you ride up to the gates of Storms End.

As you ride closer, you see the castle is decked out as though a festival is happening, Baratheon banners hanging from the walls, and far more guards than normal on the approach up to the castle. As you travel closer, a guard steps forward, and speaks breifly with the cavalryman leading your party. A few seconds later, you are riding up to the main castle, and traveling across the long bridge to the main gatehouse. As you travel under the 40 foot thick walls, you enter the first courtyard. A servant hurries up to the side of the carriage, dodging around far more people than normal, from your memories of living in the barracks here. He bows, and calls up to you, over the sound of your cavalrymens horses.

"My lady Blacksand, I apologise for this, but the royal party have taken up the room in the main stable. Could your men ride to the side yard, and stable their horses on the wall stable?"

Carth turns and looks at you.
"The Royal party?"

The servant bows again, and glances around.

"Yes, King Robert arrived here some two days ago, with an escort of troops and the Kingsguard. He is with Lord Renly now, and Ser Cortnay informed the staff you would be arriving today this morning. As such we have had little in the way of time and space to prepare. Again, I apologise for this, but we were somewhat taken by surprise by His Grace's arrival."

You sigh, and direct your cavalry to follow the grooms who are standing somewhat nervously over to one side. You are lead underneath another huge gate into a sub-section of the castle, where another stable stands, separate from the main keep. You dismount from the carriage, and travel over to the large tower that looms over this section. The servant who is escorting you inquires as what you wish to do.

"We'll go to the main hall, to present ourselves now we've arrived. No sense in staying in the rooms, and waiting to be seen."

Carth shrugs, and offers you his arm.

"We were invited, so we technically should be doing this. I'm thankful we smartened up, I'd hate to be wearing that dirty jacket I was wearing in the carriage."

You are shown through the halls of the huge Storms End, as servants bustle past you, along with soldiers and guards. You travel along a long stone passage, and then across a small stone bridge, above the courtyard below, and enter the main central keep. You are then led to a large door made of dark wood, and are shown in, the steward announcing your names.

"Lady Lissara Blacksand, of Shadowpeak, Lord Carth Blacksand, and their Children, Elia Blacksand, Calrin Blacksand, and Cerran Blacksand."

Heads turn as you enter the main hall, the former throne room of the Storm Kings, where two chairs have been set up, one the seat of Storms End, where you remember Steffon Baratheon sitting, when you were only 7 years old, and you had snuck into the upper balcony as Steffon had announced his journey to Essos. Now another seat is next to it, a large wooden construction with a rearing stag on its back, and painted gold. Both are empty, and you enter the hall and move to one side, seeing several notable nobles from the Stormlands, as well as at the base of the dais where the thrones are, 5 figures dressed in white cloaks and plate armour. Looking around the hall, you can see Ser Cortnay leaning against a pillar, and your father-in-law, Lord Penrose, sitting in a wooden seat next to him, who raises a hand and waves.

You approach Lord Penrose, and he rises to meet you, taking a few steps towards you and hugging you, a smile creasing his wrinkled face.
"Lissara, it's good to see you are well. When Carth told me of your troubles, I was very worried, but Cortnay tells me everything resolved itself in our sides favour."

The old man lowers himself into his seat, and smiles towards the twins and Elia, who are standing back, slightly overawed by the whole thing. Lord Penrose reaches into a pocket of his robe, and takes out a small handful of paper wraps, which he unwraps one, and pops it into his mouth, before holding out more of them.

"I suppose these are my grandchildren? Carth told me thier names, so you'd be Elia, and which of you two is Calrin, and which is Cerran?"

Cerran steps forward and takes one of the sweets, putting it in his mouth and grinning.

"I'm Cerran, that's Calrin!" he says, as Calrin takes a sweet as well. Elia curtsys, and Lord Penrose chuckles, before tossing another sweet to her.

"I guess it's simply boys being boys that's lead to them forgetting I'm a Lord, no? Though I do remember Cortnay asking Lord Steffon about deer hunting when he first met him..."

Cortnay coughs loudly, as Lord Penrose chuckles, and Carth raises an eyebrow. Elia begins sucking on her sweet, as Lord Penrose beckons you closer.

"Those should keep them quiet, no need for them getting antsy if things drag on. Though with Robert, that's unlikely. Now, how are you doing?"

"Things are well with me, Lord Penrose, but I must admit, the reason for the king arriving, unannounced does make me curious. Do you have anything to shed on this?"

Lord Penrose looks at Cortnay, and then smirks.

"His Grace is somewhat boisterous and unfaithful. This was well known, and it was begrudgingly accepted, till recently, last year in fact. Lord Stannis was getting married, and of course, King Robert was attending. Stannis is a dour man at the best of times, but when he found Robert, in his marriage bed, with the cousin of his new wife? I'm told Stannis was furious. When the child was born, Robert even tried to have the child fostered at Dragonstone, arguing his mother and her cousin were kin. I believe Stannis said he would sink the entire royal navy if Robert tried, so Robert chose for the child to be raised here. The queen obviously won't allow his bastards at court, despite how much King Robert would want that."

A throat is cleared behind the group of you, and you turn, seeing an older looking grey haired man standing there, wearing light blue and white, and with a pin on his shoulder in the shape of a hand. You all bow, the children following suit shortly after you, while Lord Penrose inclines his head.

"Lord Penrose, you are very well informed. Yes, indeed, Edric Storm is to be fostered here."

"Lord Hand. You're looking almost as healthy as me. What brings you to this somewhat dank corner of the room to speak with us?"

"It's not you I wish to speak to, but Lady Lissara." Jon Arryn fixes you with a piercing stare, and frowns. "I trust there will be no more attempts to drag the Stormlands into Dornish wars? I worked hard for peace in Dorne..."

Cortnay frowns.

"In her defence, Lord Hand, the Wyl's played just as dirty. They called House Darry in for crying out loud, all the way from the Riverlands!"

Jon Arryn doesn't look at Cortnay, and his frown deepens.
"There is a difference, Ser Cortnay, between inviting one house, and sending word to the entire Marches that a power struggle is in the offing. Dorne was in open revolt for a full year after King Robert took the Iron Throne, I don' want my work undermined..."

(persuasion) the Hand has made his stance on the matter clear. We will do nothing that might cause civil unrest in Dorne... But, given the threat that was recently posed to our children surely the Hand would not begrudge us a few Allies among the stormlands? After all a strong position is an excellent deterrant to war. Jon Arryn hums, before turning and walking over towards one of the white-armoured figures, and speaking to them in a low voice. Lord Penrose chuckles, and looks up at you from his chair.

"The raven Cortnay received from Kings Landing was exceptionally terse. It would appear Jon Arryn wants peace in the realm, especially in Dorne. Not saying I disagree with your plan to seek allies up here, but I can also understand his annoyance at somewhere he thought settled becoming the thorn it was after King Robert took the throne."

Carth shurgs, and leans against a pillar.

"We've no plans to attack anyone else, so unless Manwoody make it a fight, we're not going anywhere. And given they lost a sizeable chunk of their forces, I'd doubt they are in any shape to set things up again."

The four of you then turn the conversation to more simple matters, finding out how your mother-in-law is doing, how the repairs of Shadowpeak are coming along, till a loud voice echoes throughout the hall.

"Presenting, Robert Baratheon, First of his name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm. Presenting Renly Baratheon, Lord Paramount of the Stormlands, Lord of Storms End. Presenting, Lady Delena Florent. Presenting Edric Storm."

You see one of the side doors leading into the main hall open, and two figures emerge, one a tall, 6 and a half foot man with a neat beard and a barrel chest, the other looking like a far younger version of the first, only about 5ft tall with long black hair that reaches his shoulders. King Robert Baratheon and his brother, Lord Renly Baratheon enter, and walk through the hall, Robert peering around the hall, a wide smile on his face, while Renly gazes at Robert, apparently slightly in awe of his older brother. Behind the two men walks a brunette woman, a slight smile on her face, carrying a very young child, only a year old, with raven black hair. Robert and Renly seat themselves at the top of the dais, Robert in the golden chair, Renly in the stone one. Robert waves his hand, and speaks, his voice easily reaching all parts of the room.

"So good of you all to make it here, for the nameday of my child, Edric. I see some faces I didn't see at the ceremony, so I'll expect you all to raise a toast later!" Robert laughs, and then waves a hand towards Jon Arryn, who approaches him and speaks in a low tone to the two brothers, Renly intently listening, Robert leaning back, his fingers laced behind his head. Robert nods slowly, then straightens up, resting his hands on the arms of the chair. Jon Arryn turns, and calls out.

"Lady Lissara Blacksand is called forth!"

>20,18,17 vs TN 12 (2 Degrees of Success)

You step forward, and approach to a few paces from the line of Kingsguard and curtsy, bowing your head low.

"Greeting, your Grace, I am Lady Lissara Blacksand of Shadowpeak, your loyal servant."

Robert leans forward and grins.

"So you're the daughter of the man who killed Jonothor Darry? You take after your mother, much luck to you in that regard, similar to your brother, brave lad that he was. I knighted him before he passed away, did you know that? He went to his grave a knight of House Baratheon. Since you're the Lady of Shadowpeak, I guess that means he finally died? What killed him in the end, some mountain cat, or old age?

You see Jon Arryn looking pointedly at you, giving a slight shake of his head.

"My Father was poisoned, your Grace, by enemies as yet unknown, but most likely House Wyl. However, that particular issue has resolved itself."

Robert frowns, and leans forward. He turns to Jon Arryn, who had narrowed his eyes at you intently.

"Jon, is there a reason why my loyal vassals are being poisoned, and I don't know about it? I made the man a Lord, and I won't have my friends killed without answer."

Jon Arryn turns, and clears his throat.

"It was unknown how he died till this point, poison was simply a rumour that I believed to be the standard rumours coming from Dorne every time a Lord dies without an obvious cause. But as Lady Lissara said, things have been resolved in the Marches, with the inheritance dispute of House Wyl now over."

Robert glares at his Hand, before speaking in a low tone.

"I want all deaths of Lords I raised upon my ascension to the Throne properly investigated. It would not surprise me if loyalist traitors were trying to strike at vassals who may be weak due to their short time as Lords."

Jon Arryn bows, and Robert turns to look at you again.

"So, Lady Lissara. On to more pleasurable topics. Have you come to take part in the tournament? I assume thats why you're here, your brother-in-law sending word got your husband keen to enter the lists?"

Suppressing a grin at the idea of Carth jousting, you consider how to answer.

Robert shrugs, and gestures around the hall.

"No-one here did, until I arrived. And I suppose it is a bit far from Dorne for you to get here in a day, unless you rode like the devil, and I doubt any children you have are old enough to do that. Speaking of, your husband and your children, bring them forward, let them meet their king!"

You beckon Elia forward, and see the twins both look slightly stunned, as Carth takes their hands, and leads them forward, behind Elia. The sudden attention seems to have taken the two normally precocious boys by surprise. Carth walks up next to you, as Elia walks forward of you slightly, and imitates you curtsy.

"This is Elia, my heir. She has had 4 namedays."

Elia gulps something, then does another curtsy.

"Your Grace."

Carth then steps forward, and bows elegantly, the twins haltingly copying him.

"I am Lord Carth Blacksand, you Grace, and these are Calrin and Cerran, our two-year-old boys."

Robert chuckles, and nods, waving at the woman holding the baby.

"I hope Edric is as polite when he can walk and talk. Now, Lord Blacksand, do you plan on entering the lists? Or, like me, is the melee more your sport?"

Carth coughs in surprise, and bows again.
"I am not one for jousting or fighting, your Grace, though I am skilled with a crossbow, which is not part of the roster of tourny events."

Robert's face falls slightly, and then perks up again.

"Guess Cortnay got the arms, you got the brains, eh? Ser Cortnay, would you say your brother is the smarter of the two of you?"

Cortnay calls out from where he is standing with his father.
"I'll play him at Cyvasse any time, just not put money on it!"

Carth smiles slightly, as Robert lets out a guffaw.

"Well, this was most pleasant, Lady Blacksand, I'll speak to you all more this evening, at the Nameday feast."

He waves a hand, and makes it clear you are dismissed. You all bow or curtsy again, and retire to the area you were in before. A handful of names are called, and Renly begins passing judgement in a handful of small cases, Robert interjecting occasionally, but the court begins to mingle and chatter again. Jon Arryn steps down from the dais, and walks slowly in your direction, pausing to speak with a few lords along the way...

You remain where you are, and watch as Jon Arryn speaks to several more Lords, before he finally approaches you and the Penroses. He has a somewhat annoyed expression.

"I had hoped you'd heed my warning and not get Robert thinking about Targaryen loyalists with your talk of your father being poisoned. I made it clear to your father his entreaties to the court to protect him from the consequences of his rash actions were not welcome, I assumed he had told the same to you. The last thing a somewhat unstable realm such as this one needs is a king who is launching an inquisiton against his own nobles, searching for a dragon when all there is is rock lizards. Having him believe your father's death is part of a Targaryen plot is the last thing the realm needs. I ask you to not bring the subject up again, and if Robert asks, change the subject, subtly. A friendly King brings less help than an unhappy Hand can give in hardship. Do remember that."

With that, he turns and strides away, walking back towards the dais where Robert is now playing with the baby, which is tugging and pulling at his beard quite happily. Carth shivers slightly, and glances at you.

"I know it might be a sore point, but I think doing what the Hand "suggests" might be a good idea. We've barely just stabilised ourselves, jumping into the politics of the entire Seven Kingdoms may be too much too far..."

Cortnay nods.

"I hate to say it, but Carth and the Lord Hand are right. Things may seem stable here in Dorne and here, but everyone knows the heir to the Targaryens escaped, and there are plenty of houses who lost out in the Rebellion, especially in the Crownlands. So I can see why the Hand is trying to avoid talk of loyalists coming from the King."

Lord Penrose shakes his head.

"All this is too dour for my old mind. Come, Lady Lissara, help an old man to his chambers, and it'll give us an excuse to take the children out of here as well, before they start asking rude questions, as two-year-olds are wont to do."

A happy few hours is spent chatting idly with Lord Penrose in his rooms, only a few doors from yours, as the children amuse themselves drawing pictures into wax tablets that Lord Penrose gives them, each with a bronze stylus shaped like a feather. He tells you he rarely leaves Parchments, and his wife didn't come because when they had left, they'd intended to meet you here, then travel back with you to Parchments once you had paid your respects to Renly. The arrival of Robert had thrown them for a loop, and had left him having to remain for a tournament, which while an enjoyable spectacle for him, he did find he got tired during the longer events. He also tells you that Queen Cersei isn't here, not only because this involves Robert's bastard child, but because she has been vomiting and sick the past few weeks, and in a foul mood because of it.

As the shadows grow longer, you take the children to your room and leave them under the care of a maid, who assures you she will have some food brought up for them, before changing into your good dress, and descending the stairs with Carth to the feast hall. The hall is lit by oil lamps and a huge central fire, into which a man is tossing handfuls of dust, making the fire change colour. You have seats next to Cortnay, near the high table, while Lord Penrose and the other Stormlander Lords sit on the High Table, with Robert and Renly, as well as the woman who had been carrying the baby. Barristan Selmy is with them, while the other members of the Kingsguard present are opposite you, though Ser Jamie is absent. A glance around the hall tells you he is in the shadows of a pillar, glaring around him with undisguised contempt. However, he does return to the table when the first course is wheeled in, a huge cauldron of venison stew, served with onions and carrots. You dig into it, realising that you haven't yet eaten, and soon have eaten a second helping. As you mop the last of the stew up with a chunk of bread, the second course is served, what looks like 6 fish, arranged in size to appear as though they are eating one another. Robert immediately leaves the top table, and walks to the end of the dish, calling out that he is now "The biggest fish of the all!" to much laughter. He grabs a few hunks of the largest fish, and walks over your table, pushing some of the Storms End knights aside, and sitting, as the table raises a toast to him.

"Your Grace, when we were traveling to Storms End, we stopped in Summerhall, to eat and rest, and we came across something I think you might be interested in." you say, as Robert gestures for a refill of his goblet.

"Indeed, Lady Blacksand? And what might that be? Not a dragon egg?"

"No far from that. We believe it is the helmet of Lord Fell, if the crescent moon and the hole from a warhammer in the side of it is anything to go by."

Robert looks surprised, then grins.

"Ahh, Summerhall. That was a proper battle, three traitors in one day, one after the other, all in the ruins of the family they chose to serve. Fitting really, when you consider the outcome for them. Of course, Silveraxe joined me afterwards, I knew sparing him was a smart move, but it did set the stage. Nothing like a hard fought victory against innumerable odds to get the singers happy. Did you keep the helmet? I'd like to see it, bring back old memories.."

Carth leans in.

"Yes we have it in out carriage. I'll have someone deliver it to you as soon as I can, hopefully before the tournament."

Jumping on the tangent, you swallow a mouthful of fish, and begin discussing the upcoming event.

"So what is going to be in this tournament? Obviously the joust, and you mentioned a melee, but is there anything else?"

Robert nods, gulps down some wine, and then calls for some ale to be brought.

"Yes, the joust will be on the second day, the melee on the last, and on the first day, archery and a hunt. Archery will be in the evening, we'll eat outside and watch it. Purse of 400 Dragons to the winner of the Joust, 200 for the melee, and I found 5 Valyrian steel arrows in the royal armoury, marked with the sigil of Rhaenys Targaryen, if Maester Pycell is to be believed, the old goat. So I'm contributing that as a prize for the Archery, so as to spare Renly the cost. Far smaller than I'd have liked, but Jon said anything more would seem rude to the damn Lannisters. And since the Kingslayer is one of those brood, better keep them happy, in case he tries to add more notches to his sword!"

Robert laughs at his own joke, and then points at you and Carth.

"It's not right for there to be no representation of your house at the tourney. Lord Carth, is there no way you'll enter the lists, even if it is for only two tilts?"

Carth smiles sheepishly, and shakes his head.

"I'll enter the archery, it's the thing I've got the best chance at. Lissara is a better fighter than I am, I'd last all of a second in the melee."

Robert looks at you with renewed interest.

"A bit more Dornish than your father then. Ah well, its probably best you don't enter. Jon would nag my ear off if I smashed you to the ground, doesn't look very good. Well, you all will be riding with us on the hunt? No sense in staying behind, eh?"

You and Carth agree to commit to the hunt, and Robert finishes his food, then strides over towards the opposite table, raising a goblet to Renly as he passes by. Renly is looking tired, blinking back at Robert as he raises his goblet back.

When the fish is finished, people get up, and the tables are cleared away to the side. Renly excuses himself, and Robert drags him back, as musicians begin playing a strong beat. Robert pushes Renly into the arms of Lady Delena Florent, and laughs as the woman kisses Renly on the cheek, and leads him onto the dance floors, to cheers from the hall. Carth extends his hand, and leads you out to follow, and the two of you join the growing dance floor. After two dances go past, Carth is tapped on the shoulder, and Cortnay takes his place, in a dance set to a fairly energetic Marcher song. After that, you take a break, and Cortnay fetches you a glass of watered wine. You are joined by Carth, who takes you onto the dance floor again. You dance a slow number, stepping carefully around the floor, and when it ends, Carth sweeps his hand back, and kisses your hand, the first love song you've danced to since your wedding. The two of you make your excuses, and hurry upstairs, briefly checking that the children are asleep, before heading into your room, and passionately kissing....

The next day, early in the morning, you are awoken by a servant, who places a small tray of food and informs you the hunt will be leaving in an hour. Eating and dressing quickly, you head down with Carth to the courtyard, and find your horses already saddled and ready, and a growing mass of riders and hounds gathering near the main gate. You both join the mass, and wait for Robert and Renly to arrive.

About half an hour later, you see Robert walking down the steps, buckling on a belt with a large horn hanging from it, and with a large boar spear slung on his back. He swings himself into the saddle, and calls out.

"My brother is feeling somewhat ill, and claims its the dancing after the wine that I made him do. We'll make do without him!"

The hunt heads off, into the woods to the north of Storms End, and you face a decision as to what to do...

You and Carth both decide to settle in with the main party, mainly Lords and Ladies who are along for the fun, not the actual hunting. Servants on foot are serving small sweetmeats and wine, while people make idle conversation over the distant sound of dogs barking. The centre of attention is Lady Delena, though the subject of Edric is being carefully avoided. Robert, his Kingsguard, and the younger knights (including Ser Cortnay) have ridden off after the dogs, though you see Jamie Lannister riding away from the main group, a still stormy expression on his face.

"Lord Caron! I believe we haven't had the pleasure. Lady Blacksand, of Shadowpeak." you call out riding up to the man sitting in the saddle, sipping from a goblet. He is well built, and his face is slim and handsome, his hair a vivid dark red. He turns to you, and nods slowly, his eyes narrowing as he looks you up and down.

"Lady Blacksand. I saw you yesterday during the audience with the King. The king complimented you on taking after your mother, but I hope you share your father's opinions on the Marches? Though you have beaten them back..."

Carth raises his eyebrows.

"Lord Caron, we were simply defending ourselves against the hostility of House Wyl. They did try to assassinate us."

"And you allowed Manwoody to prosper and thrive. You should have wiped both out in a single blow. And you allowed that Wyl snake to take the seat of his father. You don't seriously believe he'll keep his word do you? The moment your back is turned he'll revert to type, scheming and planning against any Stormlander. However, that is just my opinion. Do you have anything to ask of me, or is this simple pleasurable talk?" Caron says, as he bites into a lemoncake, and stares coolly at you.

"Well Lord Caron, if you are offering advice, might I bend your experienced ear about the Marches. Given the rather drastic changes my activities have wrought, what's you view on the Marches, as they stand?"

Lord Caron smiles, but his eyes are dead.

"Do you know what a shark is, Lady Blacksand? A large fish, that eats anything it can hunt. When fishing for sharks, one simply drains a goat overboard, then drops the corpse in. The sharks go insane when they scent blood, attacking other sharks and prey indiscriminately. They become easy targets to harpoon. And you just spilled an entire cow into the waters. If there wasn't a hawk overhead, I myself may feel inclined to go fishing. Hawks have a habit of stealing the kill, ruining the fun of the sport..."

Carth shakes his head, and as Lord Caron turns to have his goblet refilled rolls his eyes at you. As Lord Caron turns back, you politely smile, and continue.

"So what would you say is the threat to look at? Both here, and in general."

Lord Caron gives a short bark of laughter.
"Says the girl swimming with the sharks? It's the one you have attached to you."

With that, he spurs his horse forward, as a clear hunting horn sounds, and the dogs begin baying. Carth looks excited, and kicks his horse forward.

You kick your horse forward, and the forest blurs as you begin riding down the trail. You soon catch up to the head of the chase, though the dogs and the party with them is still far away. Another minute of riding, and the dogs are sounding closer and closer, having clearly stopped. As you approach, you see Robert, and several other knights clustered around a thicket, out of which several loud yelps and howls are coming from.

"Ahh, Lady Blacksand, first to join the real hunters! Wine and sweetmeats get too sickly for you?" calls Robert, before waving his spear towards the thicket.

"There's a nasty looking wolf in there, some black furred creature, currently squaring off with the dogs! I was about to go and kill it myself, but of course, what the lady wants she gets. But if she wants a wolf-fur cloak, I'll ask her to get it herself..."

"Well your Grace, black has always suited me. Though I hope all you fine knights don't expect me to kill it with my bare hands?"

Robert laughs, and calls behind him for his squire.

"Massey! Bring out some weapons for the second Nymeria!"

A young man, slightly older than you with a grin on his face steps forward, and rolls out a long roll of leather, revealing a large amount of weapons in various conditions, but all with the mark of House Baratheon. There is a bow, a crossbow, a longsword, a large mace, and a small spear with two prongs.

"Well my Lady? The choice is yours?" the squire says, a clear grin on his face, as Robert cuffs him around the ear.

"Behave yourself boy! She's married, and too much for you to handle, if she's anything like her father!"

You pick up the frog spear, and twirl it around your head, tossing it from hand to hand.

"Gentlemen, this seems a little... lacking for a woman like me. Something such as what the king has, that's more my type."

All the knights laugh, except for the two Kingsguard present, one who visibly blushes, the other, recognisable as Barristan Selmy, shakes his head slowly. Robert slaps his knee, then tosses his spear to you, which you spin in the air, and feel the balance.

"Try this, might be more enjoyable!" Robert calls, before bowing elegantly, and gesturing to the thicket.

Shaking your head, you enter the bushes, and push your way through the branches. You emerge into a clearing, and see two dead dogs, their innards spilled onto the ground by a huge beast, that now hunkers over the body of them, chewing. The rest of the pack are a few metres back, barking and yelping at the creature. As you enter, it raises its head, and you can tell this is no wolf. Precisely what it is, you are uncertain, but wolves don't have two inch long claws, and long shaggy fur that covers their whole body, or break bones while a pack of dogs hang back from attacking.

It looks at you, and makes a deep snorting snarl, before lowering it's head, and continuing to eat the dead dog.

You steady yourself, and charge forward, you nose filling with a noxious stink coming from the creature. It ignores you, and you strike into it's hide, feeling some resistance, as though striking cheap armour. The creature shrieks, and hisses, before jumping back and circling around the clearing, the dogs backing away as you match it pace for pace. Now it is fully standing, it is near 5ft at the shoulder, it's head showing a set of 4 long canines.

The long spear slams into the chest of the creature as it bounds towards you, and you wrench the haft to the side, as the beast sinks onto it. The Creature shrieks again, and lunges, but is visibly slower, it's snapping jaws missing you by a clear foot as you dart to the side, and carefully place your spear firmly into the side of the beast, twisting the spear-point. A ghastly howl rips from it, and you hear a clear "By the Seven" from the thicket. The creature continues to rush at you, and you slowly chip away at it, till finally you slash the tendons of its rear leg, sending it crashing to the ground before you thrust cleanly into its jaw, ending its life. You sag slightly on the spear for support, as Robert and his squire burst into the thicket, and the squire first trips as he sees the huge beast, and then vomits, when he sees the corpses of the dogs. Robert is, for once, speechless, as you reverse your grip on the spear, and return it to him, before limping slowly past them to fetch a horse, in order to haul your bear-sized trophy back to Storms End.

>That's all folks! Congratulations on killing a "Glutton" a bear sized wolverine that can eat almost anything, including wood, leather, and while bones. Their pelts are highly valued, both as status symbols and as beautiful fur coats, being the only long-haired animal large enough to make a single full coat out of. The fact it's one of your house colours is just icing on the cake...

The rest of the hunt does continue, with the leading party leaving you after it is clear you're not going to collapse, though Robert does make a comment about you being able to handle hairy things, before riding away laughing. You do notice that the main group are very intently pushing the dogs onwards, and several of them split off from the main group, ranging out on their own. You are helped in lifting the hulking body onto a sledge, and draft horses begin hauling it back to the main castle. The larger group of socialising riders are stunned when you appear along with it, though you do see Carth's eye's widen, then he sighs, and rolls his eyes slightly. Lady Delena immediately begins fussing over you, insisting you remain here, tended to by her (and the maester who is being sent for). You consider refusing, and continuing to hunt, before Carth dismounts next to you, pours you some wine, and asks, in a very firm tone of voice, that you "Stay here and tell the whole story.". Catching his tone, you decide that basking in your victory for a short time would be beneficial, and your back is really hurting after the ride here. As Lady Delena carefully undoes the top of your clothing, wincing regularly, and almost fainting, you recount the battle, Carth watching you fairly intently, and nodding along. By the time the Maester arrives, Lady Delena has given up on trying to tend to you, and has instead fussed around getting the remaining food and wine near at hand, making the three of you, and her ladies in waiting, into a small picnic. The Maester inspects your wounds, and informs you they are clean cuts, and should heal well. You might not even get a scar, if you don't exert yourself. At the insistence of Lady Delena, you and Carth travel with her back to the castle, at a pace slower than walking.

You hold up a hand as Lady Delena begins gently poking the bandages on your back again, and decide that it's time to change the subject.

"My lady, might I ask you about your son, Edric? How is he settling into Storms End?"

Lady Delena blushes, and looks away, before speaking.

"Well, I believe he's set up with a nanny, and he appears to like it here. It must be his father in him, knowing he's home. I'd have liked him to stay at Brightwater Keep, but my uncle wouldn't hear of it. But I suppose he'll receive the best education one of his station could expect. And he'll have someone to look up to, in Renly. So I'm hopeful for him to do well. Better than if Selyse got her way. She'd see him abandoned in the slums of Dragonstone if she got her way!"

Lady Delena sniffs, and continues.

"Anyway, I think Robert will look after Edric here. Maybe one day, he'll earn a castle of his own, if he's skilled enough, and he should be, given the nature of his father."

The rest of the ride passes in idle conversation, Delena talking about how excited she is to watch the Joust, though of course, Robert is in the melee. She inquires how Carth feels about the Archery, to which he says that the short notice of the tournament means he thinks he might be in with a chance. The sun is still overhead as you ride into Storms End, and the maester politely requests you lie down, and try not to move for the rest of the day, to allow his work to take effect.

>Go and lie down?
>Go and give instruction about your kill?
>Explore Storms End?

You thank Lady Delena for her concern, and leaning slightly on Carth, you wander through Storms End, looking for a good place to rest and relax. Unfortunately, little concern for gardens and beauty seem to have been made in Storms End, in fact, as you walk on the walls, you can see the only gardens around are vegetable gardens outside the curtain wall. When you comment on this to Carth, he shrugs.

"It was built to endure battle, not to be a pleasure palace. I do know somewhere quiet and peaceful we could go. But I would recommend we not bring the children there. Come on, I'll show you."

Carth leads you up through the central keep, and leads down a spiraling corridor that ends in a large wooden door. Carth smiles at you, and covers your eyes, and then asks you to open the door. You fumble for the handle and pull the door open.

"Keep your eyes shut, Lissara. Now, take two steps forward, and then turn to your right, and take two more steps."

You step slowly forward, following Carth's instructions. You hear him moving around, and then the sound of something heavy dragging on the floor. Then, Carth presses on your shoulders, and sits you into a chair. You hear him move again, and then him speaking, in a low voice.

"Okay Lissara, open your eyes, but you need to be quiet."

You open your eyes and see...

....a Library. Of course. Carth is seated at a table, opposite you, reading a large thick book, and piled on the table next to him is a large stack of volumes. You can hear someone moving behind the bookcases, and low murmuring. Carth smiles at you, and looks back down at his book.

He will pay for this...
------------------------------

The rest of the day goes slowly, you do find some interesting books, mainly one about House Blackfyre, and the various Blackfyre rebellions. However, there is only so much reading you can take, and after 3 hours, you tug on Carth's arm, and leave.

"Are you going to the feast tonight, and watching the Archery? Or will you stay and rest those bandages?" Carth asks, looking with concern at you.

"Of course I'm going to come and watch you. How else will I bask in the probably innumerable toasts that Robert will make?"

Carth rolls his eyes again, and begins to walk away.

"I need to go and practice with a bow. Been nearly 4 years since I fired one..."

You head up to your room, and change into your dress, Jelissa helping you apply makeup, and cover most of the bandages with a silk shawl, that hides most of the white strips of cloth. You collect Elia and the Twins, who have spent the day riding ponies around the farms outside the walls. Calrin apparently found a dragon egg, and has stored it in a leather bag. Jelissa assures you it is a snake egg, and that if it's dangerous when it hatches, she'll make sure it's milked.
The five of you head to the tourny grounds, a large open area of grass, half of which is currently covered by a large tent out of which the smell of cooking meat comes. Stepping through the entry way, you see it is open to the rest of the ground, where a set of targets have been set up. In the middle of the tent, Robert and several other lords and knights are raising goblets of wine, standing around one of three fires, over which deer are roasting. Robert sees you, and raises his goblet to you.

"To the mighty slayer of devil-spawned killers!"

The men around him cheer, and raise their goblets, and Robert strides towards you, drawing you into a hug, before letting go, and holding his hands up, as he touches your bandages.

"My apologies, Lady Blacksand, my apologies. Now, take the small table just to the side of mine. You "won" the hunt by no small measure, despite the stag I got after you returned to the castle. Do you have plans for the beast?"

"I thought maybe a nice fur coat, and having the skeleton mounted in my trophy room. It'll look ferocious, and it'll prove I did it should people disbelieve me."

Robert shakes his head, and with one arm resting on your shoulder, leads you towards a set of reclining benches and seats next to small tables. There is one with three seats, two large and imposing, the other smaller, but clearly comfortable. Lady Delena and Renly are seated, and as Robert joins them, he waves to the table next to theirs, where three smaller chairs and three heavily padded ones are waiting. You sit down carefully, and a servant brings you wine, as the children sit down, and Renly smiles at you.

"The Septon said you slew an unholy beast. Apparently they raid tombs and graves for the corpses, so the High Septon some 50 years before Aegon landed declared them anathema to the faith. I imagine the church of the Seven will be very happy with you. Though the old gods worshipers may be less so. Large forest beasts tend to be revered, and buried when killed. But fortunately, you live nearly as far from the North as it is possible to get. We'll just keep it quiet, and things should go by just fine."

Robert laughs.

"I can imagine Ned's face if I told him I killed a Direwolf, he'd look so glum then sigh angrily at me. Doubt he'd be too concerned about your glutton though, he did build a sept for Cait after all. That poor Septon, stuck in the north!"

Robert begins laughing again, as herald steps forward.

"The First Round of the Archery is ready to begin. Lord Alesander Staedmon, Lord Carth Blacksand, Ser Gladden Wylde, Tom of Rainwood, and Philip of Storms End, to shoot!"

Robert waves his hand, and you see the group of men walk to the marks, and draw their bows. Carth is at the mark closest from the tent, but Calrin and Cerran are still standing on their chairs, trying to see as much as possible. There is an audible creak as the bows are drawn, then successive twangs, then the hiss of arrows flying and the thud of them hitting the target. This continues for 5 more shots...
>>
Rolled 6, 6, 2, 2 = 16 (4d6)

>>2924032
Carth does tolerably well, getting 4 of his 6 shots clustered in the centre ring, out performing Lord Staedmon, who glowers at the other competitors. Philip beats Carth, landing 5 arrows clearly in the centre, though on the 6th, his bowstring slips, and the arrow sails off into the night. He takes the well-meaning laughter from the tent with a bow, clearly he is one of the garrison from his yellow surcoat. Ser Gladden gets all his arrows in the centre, as does Tom, and another round is announced, with Lord Staedmon and Philip out, Staedmon by skill, Philip by bad luck. Robert calls Philip over, and hands him a gold Dragon, patting him on the shoulder and telling him to buy a better bowstring. The second round is announced, and the targets are moved ten paces down and the competitors step up to shoot again...
>>
>>2924065
Carth does better, but unfortunately, not good enough. He lands all his arrows in the target, but only 5 are in the centre, while all of Toms and Ser Gladdens are there. Carth is walking off before anything can be announced, bowing to Robert, and joining you at the table, where Elia kisses him on the cheek and tells him she thought he was the best. Carth shakes his head, and kisses her back, before downing a goblet of wine.

"You wouldn't think archery to be thirsty work, but the pressure really takes it out of you. Now, what are we eating? I hope it's not that monster you killed Lissara."

You hear a polite cough come from next to you, and turn to see Jon Arryn.

"I believe the thing is being skinned and the bones packed into a chest, after being boiled. The meat was thrown to the dogs, predators like those tend to make poor eating."

Robert waves Jon over, and a servant pulls up a seat at the kings table.

"Jon, didn't see you on the hunt, still focused on those books?"

"Your father built an exceptional library, it would be foolish to not take advantage of it. I was pleased to see the Lady Lissara there as well, in order to rest her wounds. The Blackfyre rebellions are most interesting, the later ones failing due to their inability to rally noble support, and to secure a safe base to operate from."

Robert shakes his head, and rolls his eyes.

"Yes, Jon, I remember what you told me, secure Gulltown, make each realm safe one at a time, win enemies to your cause."

"And most importantly, do not do what Daeron did, and ruin your enemies. It allowed the Blackfyres to claim support for quite a while."

Robert scoffs, and turns to the Archery again. Ser Gladden has won, and Tom of Rainwood has left the marks. Ser Gladden is presented with the 5 Valyrian steel arrows, and as he spins them, he bows to the King and Renly, before being dismissed. The meat is then served, large slices of venison and small cups of cider for the children. Robert is served what looks like half a leg, and he happily tucks into it.

>Renly
>The Realm

Robert is soon deep in conversation and eating with Jon Arryn, Delena is telling Elia about Kings Landing, and Carth is making sure the twins don't cause too much disruption. You turn to Renly, and, between mouthfuls, begin talking with him.

"So, Lord Renly, how do you think the realm is doing?"

Renly looks slightly surprised, but answers to the best of his ability.

"I think the realm is in need to something to unify it. Something to allow the lords and knights to rally behind, something that can't be framed as Westerosi fighting Westerosi. Of course, attacking Essos would be a poor move, their fleets equal ours, and the Seven Kingdoms are far too large to defend against the raids."

The rest of the meal goes by quickly, and Jelissa soon has to take the children up to their beds, but she returns afterwards for the various toasts and general merriment. There is no dancing, but a few acrobats do perform, to the applause of the nobles assembled.
