General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.
Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

Pokemon:
Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roserade)
Dice (Feraligatr)
Sorbet (Vulpix)

Location: Akaneki, the Fighting Gym

Recently: Herb, Laki, and Hana all earned a Fighting Spirit badge

“That’s a relief.” You say about the healing as you pass your injured pokemon’s balls to a cheerful Chansey that comes to collect them. You’ve rested up lately, but it seems every time you do, you end up expending more aura energy right away. As long as there’s a healing machine that will do the job, there’s no need to exert yourself. You can’t honestly feel guilty about their healing taking an hour when you can do it now, can you? You’ve got a bit of a complex about feeling responsible for every problem you come across and fixing it personally regardless of what it does to you.

“Umm, do you mind if I watch some people practice fighting?” You ask Ailano.

“You want to learn to fight?” He asks in a loud, boisterous voice. “You’ll learn more from practice, come on!” He yanks you onto some thin, soft mats on the floor. “Let’s see what you’ve got.”

Ailano is huge and muscled. You look around. Laki watches with keen interest and folds her arms. Hana looks a little more concerned. Keira just smiles a bright, shiny smile, and Abigail climbs up a collection of mats along the wall so she can see over everyone’s heads. She looks like a little kid, but you know better than to point it out.

“Relax, little friend.” He says. “I’m not planning on beating you up. I just need to see what you can do before I can offer advice. Treat me like you would a violent robber who has you cornered. Don’t hold back, I can handle it.”

You don’t doubt that he can. He’s confident, muscled, and by his demeanor, very comfortable in the ring. His posture is calm, but ready.

“Come on. Show me how you fight, and I’ll show you how to use that style better.”

“Alright.” You say, trying to bounce your weight around in a rhythm, bit by bit. “Here, I, come!” You leap forward. Your fists fly forward along with your body. You feel awkward at first, but quickly begin to feel right. He blocks the first one, dodges the second, but the third, which you put your weight into, lands squarely in his gut as you step forward aggressively. He didn’t expect that aggression. You were just trying to do what you think Laki would do in this situation.

“Oof!” He wheezes a little before standing up straight. You hurt him, but not that much.

“Sorry!”

“Heh, relax. I guess I underestimated you. Someone with such aggressive pokemon would naturally have an assertive style.” He says. “You’ve got more experience in fights than what someone would guess by looking at you. I can tell by how you move. But you’re untrained, and a little sloppy if you don’t mind me saying.”

“He landed a hit on you.” Laki has her arms folded. She’s not that offended, but she does seem to feel the need to come to your defense.

“He did. But it could have hurt a lot more. And I could have gotten him hard after because his guard was non-existent.” He turns back to you. “What do you want to polish up?”

Gobble rapidly boxes from the sidelines, wanting you to get back into it. He’s very hyped up. He's treating this like he's your trainer.

I feel like this suits herb the best.
He wouldn't usually go out and fight people first (preferring to try and talk first) but being able to defend himself or others while fighting back seems like the perfect technique for him.

Also, nothing bad can come from emulating Old Man Mace.

Definitely Herb. He'd be the type to just keep blocking and redirecting attacks until the opponent is too tired or frustrated to keep attacking.

“If I was open to a counter attack, then I need to fix that.” You say with as much determination as you can muster.

“Smart. Better to protect yourself than anything else in a fight.” He says. “Alright. Lesson one.” He pulls up his fists. You take up defensive stance that imitates what you saw him do before as best as possible. But you’re confused when he looks behind you and nods.

You find yourself suddenly grappled from behind. Soft, squishy flex pushes into your back and a familiar smell hits you. “Laki?”

She releases you. He explains. “Lesson one is that a good defense means awareness of all your surroundings. An attack can come from anywhere, at any time. Like this!” He lunges at you.

Laki is already out of the way. She’s fast. But because of that, and because Laki already taught you this lesson a little, you’re able to back away before he can get you.

“Good.” He says, moving left and right, arms outstretched. He makes a few feints, and a few real grabs, and a few strikes.

Some, you avoid, some you catch. All of them, you learn from. He’s an effective teacher. At the end of it, you feel a lot more comfortable keeping your composure and wits when there are things coming at you.

“Great work.” He compliments. “You’re a natural. You keep doing this one weird thing with your arm, though.” It takes you a second to realize what he’s talking about. You tried defending yourself with the frying pan you weren’t holding a few times. “But overall very impressive for just two hours of work.”

“It’s been two hours?” You look at the time. You guess nobody wanted to stop you. It really flew by!

Your injured pokemon’s pokeballs are sitting with the girls. Gardevoir seems to be floating them around to Cubone and Keira’s amazement.

“Alright. Let’s teach your pokemon a move. It'll take awhile and I have places to be today.” He stretches.

Hana and Laki come forward. They’re ready,.

Ah! The move! You were so busy learning that you weren’t thinking about what you’d teach your pokemon. You think hard.

“I’ll take Flail, please.” Hana requests. “Um, sir.”

Ailano seems amused. “You won the battle. You don’t have to use any honorifics.”

“What are you going to choose?” Laki asks you.

“I’m stuck between Liquidation and Laser Focus.” You say. “Dice and Belladonna both did great.”

Laki thinks, then announces to Ailano. “I’d like to teach Liquidation to Wailord.” You look up at her. She just smiles back for a second before returning her focus to the gym leaders.

“Then um, I think Belladonna would do well with Laser Focus.” You say, wondering how hard it will be for Dice to learn Liquidation from Wailord.”

“Great!” He claps his hands, then gets to work calling forth different gym members.

You watch and help as a Jabo, the cool and collected mainlander, teaches Belladonna Laser Focus. She looks very eager to prove herself after being knocked out. She takes the task with surprising focus, and learns quickly. She doesn’t seem to want to stop practicing even after it’s clear she’s got it down.

“Alright, Bella. That’s enough.” You pick her up.

You and your friends gather outside to where the massive Wailord is being taught Liquidation by one of the three other gym leaders you didn’t face today.

“I’m so booooored.” Abigail complains.

“Really?” Keira asks. “I’m envious. I’d be practicing fighting there too if everyone wasn’t afraid of touching me. It looks fun!”

“Sweaty guys trying to touch you isn’t as fun as it sounds.” Abigail says. “So, we’re all set to go on our next adventure, right guys?”

“I’m ready if everyone else is. We were going to find Polu, right Soft Hands?” Laki asks.

“How do we even start?” Hana asks. “He sold his pokedex.”

Nah pretty sure you're right
>>
You and your friends begin walking down to the docks. It’s a bit of a distance and mostly downhill, so that gives you some time to think about what you’ll do.

“Well, as far as we know, the last places Polu was at was either Terichi. We should probably start there.”

“That’s a big stretch of land.” Laki says. “Well, for our region, anyway.

“You’re right. We might need help from someone who’s good at tracking people down.” You think.

The group also thinks. Everyone reflects on the thought.

“Jane.” Laki begrudgingly admits her idea. “I bet you a six pack she knows where each of us are at all times.”

“Sounds creepy.” Abigail adds. “I know a creepy guy who can help. But uh, he’ll want payment. He’s good though. He can find anything.”

“Hey, what about the pirates?” Hana asks. “From Take? Captain Pahoa will probably do anything for Herb.”

Oh right. Captain Pahoa, his sister, and that fashion show you had. They might have the skillset you need.

“We could try a spirit search.” Keira says. “I have no right to demand help from the psychic temple, but I might be able to arrange for them to hear us out if the right people are willing to do me a favor.”

There are a few other possibilities. Jacob, Valerie’s dad and the vispum magnate, as well as your mom’s boss, has a lot of resources. You’d had to ask, but he seemed like a nice person who might help.

“The psychic temple?” You ask Keira as you set up a pre-trip meal for everyone on the beach. Psychics would be amazing at finding people! At least, you assume so. “That sounds like a great idea!”

Keira smiles, but the look on Gardevoir’s face tells a different story. “It is, isn’t it?” Her voice says it is, but she doesn’t like the fact.

“What’s the matter?” Hana asks.

Keira looks down at her bare feet. “Most of them don’t like girls from my temple. Ghosts and Psychics. And they’re a bit...difficult sometimes.” She holds up her hands. “But I’m sure I can can arrange it. It’s for Polu, after all.”

“I still think Jane is the safest bet.” Laki says. “She’s difficult too, but I think she’d help without too much convincing. We’d just have to not strangle her while she does.”

“We can do both.” You say. They both sound like good ideas. “And I can try something tonight. I don’t know if it will work, but it’s how I found Keira before.” You say.

She looks back and smiles at the memory. She seems more comforted than threatened at remembering your impressive use of aura power now. “Good idea, Herb!” Her genuine smile fades though. “I’ll go to the psychic temple while you guys get Jane, and Herb tries his aura power.”

“Wait, why do we have to split up?” You ask.

“The Psychic temple accepts all visitors, but the specific branch that specializes in this sort of thing doesn’t allow boys to enter their area of the temple, and generally don’t like to do favors for men either. And they don’t answer most summons to come out. It would be easier to convince them without you.” She apologizes with her eyes. “I won’t take long, though. I can meet up with you quickly. They travel fast when they actually leave the temple.”

Everyone gets fed and ready for the trip. It feels too quick. You’d hate to part ways with Keira again, but you are comforted that it won’t be long.

“Sorry we didn’t go with your idea.” You tell Abigail.

“No complaints here. I didn’t exactly want to deal with him anyway.” She shrugs. “Are you sure you want to let Keira go by herself? I don’t mind going with her.”

“I can help too.” Hana says. “I think Laki would be the best person to reel in Jane, and I can’t really do anything but get in the way while you...aura at Polu, but I can help Keira.”

(continued)
>>
>>2914672
“Can’t we go to the temple together?” You suggest. But even as you say the words, you get an odd feeling about taking too long to find Polu. It’s probably just your imagination, but it does feel like it’s been so long that you might want to hurry.

How do you want to split the group?

>You and Laki can travel while the others convince the psychic temple

“Well, if you think that’s best, Laki and I will go start the search with Jane and you can catch up after you visit the psychic temple.” You tell the other girls.

“It shouldn’t take longer than a day or three.” Keira tells you, before hitching up her very light bag of travelling things.

“Wait, you’re leaving right now? I was hoping to get your help with this.” You produce the Time Flower you found a long while back.

She thinks for a moment, getting a little lost in the crystal shine of the thing. “I can try, but I don’t think I can do anything that you can’t.”

“I think you know a lot that I don’t, and there’s plenty that you can do that I can’t.” You assure her.

She thinks again. “Well, if you don’t mind us taking a while, we can leave in the morning.”

“I do like sleep.” Abigail says. “Morning is good with me.”

“I umm, wouldn’t mind a night together before we part ways for awhile.” Hana says with a strange look in her eyes.

“I’m not exactly looking forward to rushing to Jane.” Laki says. “And travelling at night isn’t a good idea, even if it’s the three of you.”

“And Gardevoir.” Hana says. “Umm, you do want to come to the psychic temple with us, right Gardevoir?”

The tall, graceful pokemon’s voice echoes just a little uncomfortably loudly. “I go where the sunlight guides me.” She says, vaguely. But she stays standing near you and Laki. You’re a little conflicted. The temple might be a good place for her to go to see if they can help, but doing that now could slow down the search for Polu even more.

Cubone looks confused. It doesn’t know where it’s supposed to go.

“Hi Cubone.” You squat down so you can meet her eye to eye. “Are you willing to go across the sea with us? It might be awhile before we can take you back to this island.”

Cubone looks confused. Across the sea? Island?” “You’d take me back, if I asked?” Gardevoir asks her thought out loud.

“He would.” Laki answers on your behalf. “I might consider it. My dad made you a new club, and you betrayed Soft Hands and hurt Dice’s feelings. They’re both forgiving, but I’ve got a temper. I’ll be watching you.” She lays it all out. Wow. You didn’t realize she felt so strongly that way.

Cubone looks down, ashamed, and slowly positions herself by your feet.

Dice is busy splashing around in the water, outside of hearing range.

“So I guess Cubone and Gardevoir are going with you guys.” Abigail says, interrupting the awkward moment.

“Wait, it might be best if you go with them, Gardevoir.” You suggest to her. “The temple might be a good place for you to visit, and-”

“I will go where the sunlight guides me.” She repeats. Except she does so as she walks over to the other girls. You guess that settles it, even if you don’t really understand how.

You can Keira stay up late trying to better understand this time flower. You both don’t really have much of an idea of what you’re doing, but you find yourself having some success in figuring things out. By the end of your efforts, you end up being able to have it replay the audio of the last few seconds. It’s like a way to see and hear into the past. But it takes a lot of focus and effort.

Keira yawns. She’s pooped. She really pushed herself on that tonight, but her efforts really helped you understand it better. You feel like you’ve cracked a lot of hard stuff with it and you’re on the verge of something better.

“It’s alright. Get some sleep, Keira.” You tell her.

“What about you?” She asks.

Laki and Abigail have fallen asleep against each other, and a few pokemon have gathered around them for warm cuddles. It's pretty adorable. You have to resist the urge to take a picture.

You notice that Hana is still awake, sitting out on the beach and staring out at the night sky.

She notices you noticing her. The smile she shoots over lets you know there’s nothing wrong. She’s just enjoying the warm, star-filled night on the beach.

You grab a few ingredients from your bag, and head over to Hana.

“Hey, watcha making?” She asks.

“Just some lunches for you guys for your trip.” You say, setting up a little work station next to her. It’s mostly sandwiches and things, but you know not to take them too lightly. You can’t just consider the flavor profile of each item, you’ve got to remember the moisture content, how long they’ll be packaged before being eaten, the type of bread, all sorts of stuff.

“Oh jeez. Now I feel guilty for just sitting around.” She awkwardly laughs. “You never really stop being the best, do you?”

“I, uh.”

“It was rhetorical.” She snuggles your arm for a second, then lets go and and takes up a knife to slice some things for you. She can always get the best possible slices. Always the exact same width, every time. She’s fast, too.

“So what’s keeping you up?” You ask her.

“Nothing in particular. I just have trouble sleeping sometimes.”

“Oh.” It’s your turn to feel a little guilty. “I hadn’t noticed.” You confess.

“Well, you know. You tend to do things to me that make me fall asleep after.” She blushes a little. “What about you? What’s on your mind?”

“I feel guilty.” You confess. “Am I a bad friend?”

She looks at you in shock. “You? What? No! No no no. Why would you even say that?”

“It’s just, I’ve spent all this time doing other things when Polu is missing.”

She puts down the knife and turns to you. “Herb. Nobody here is as good a person, and friend, as you. You do way more than enough. And waiting a bit before dropping everything for Polu makes sense. He’s a wanderer, and pokemon journey’s are like that. That’s why it’s an adventure. You of all people have nothing to feel guilty about.”

That puts you at ease. You’re not totally relieved, but it’s enough to make you relax a bit. “Thanks.”

You both cuddle for a bit, looking at the stars.

“I’m going to miss you, and the others.”

“I’ll miss you and Laki.” She says. “It’s going to be a long few days.”

“It’s weird, isn’t it? It feels like the days are so long, but there’s never enough time to do the million things we want.” You think about time not spent with Polu. Valerie too. Even Jane, a bit. And your family, and-

You stop as Hana cuddles closer. “I can feel your heartbeat.” She comments.

“Heh. I guess I still have all this energy. I’m so used to being overexerted that having some energy is an odd feeling.”

“Oh.” She comments. “Well, uh, what do you suppose we could do to fix that?” She avoids your eyes and draws random patterns in the sand with her finger.

Something overtakes you. An urge. “Hey Hana, let’s fuck.” You propose. You just let the word out and float on the air. It’s not a word you like to say out loud much, but you have to admit it communicates exactly what you want to propose right now.

She’s flabbergasted for a moment. The words coming out of your mouth are more shocking to her than you, you suppose. “I, uh- Y-yeah! Okay!” Her eyes fill with energy. The shy, reserved girl grabs your arm with surprising strength and takes you to a nearby grouping of trees.

Then some stuff happens.

The two of you are pretty deep into it, but out of the corner of your eye you notice something. A tiny, red and black pokemon is curiously investigating the clothes you left in a pile. All of your clothes are there, minus what Hana put in her mouth to avoid making noise. Since you’ve been pretty rough on your outfits on your adventure, it would be a big problem if something happened to those. The pokemon itself seems harmless. Small, cautious, and not at all giving any indication it wants any trouble. But when it coughs up a small flaming hairball into the sand next to your clothes, that does give you some alarm.

Hana, despite facing the same direction, has noticed nothing. You can’t blame her, since her eyes keep rolling into the back of her head.

>Ignore it. Give Hana all the attention and passion you can muster until morning
>Dang. Better stop and go deal with that

Despite the passion of the moment, the sheer silliness of seeing this little creature casually interrupt the mood just tickles your funny bone.

“Hana.” You say, trying to get her attention.

“Herb~!” She replies, muffled.

“Hana.” You repeat, trying not to laugh at the misunderstanding.

She repeats your name with even more enthusiasm.

You slow down, then giggle, then just laugh. You can’t help it.

Poor Hana is confused a bit out of it still. It takes her quite a bit of time to come down for her hazy-headed state of mind. But when she does, she finally notices it too.. “Omigosh! A litten!” She whispers. The motion, much slower, still continues.

The pokemon turns to your direction now, noticing you trying not to crack up, and Hana now too. Without showing any real emotion one way or the other, it coughs up a flaming furball that lands on your clothes, then scurries off.

That was a great shirt. This was a great time with Hana while you were really rocking it. All of it was great, and that pokemon came and coughed all over it.

But that doesn’t bug you. It’s just funny.

You and Hana continue. While it’s not as intense or mind blowing, it’s one of those little private, silly memories that will become a little inside joke between the two of you.

When you’re done, you and Hana wash up quickly, then join the others at the camp to sleep.

You wake up the next morning, everyone is all ready to get going. Hana whistles a tune while packing, Abigail comments that your clothes look to be in worse condition than hers (she keeps her new dress packed away very carefully, and wears her ragged old clothes again) and Keira and Gardevoir seem to be trying to talk with each other and not really understanding each other that well, but still enjoying the other’s company.

Laki gives Hana a kiss on the lips. It’s less than what you get, but more than just a friendly kiss. Hana somehow manages to be put in an even better mood.

“Everyone ready?” Laki says as yours and her pokemon all board Wailord.

Well, I’m a sucker for a few different Pokémon. Dunsparce, Pyukumuku, Solosis, Spoink, Spinda, Slowpoke, Exeggcute (especially showing off the Exeggcutor of the mainland), Lickitung, Sunkern, Unown, Girafarig, Meditite, Gulpin, Castform, Mime Jr, Kricketot, Combee, Cherubi, Carnivine, Rotom (Heat or Frost), Audino, Scolipede, Dwebble, Trubbish, Durant, Barbaracle, Stufful, Oranguru and their lines.

Some I would want to catch, others just to see Herb’s reaction to interacting with or to battle.

I’d love to watch Shedinja battle.

I’d really like to see a list of Herb’s goals/plans/promises. I think if it were in-fiction as a method of Herb managing and prioritizing all the different directions he’s being pulled in it would be good character growth, but even if it were just in a pastebin it would be helpful for us players to keep straight all the things we might not remember from however many months ago. Like, remember when Herb said he’d do a show with Bella and Sorbet? Or that Herb’s parents only plan on being here a few years?

I’d like to see Herb continue to grow his sexual assertiveness. Maybe swing by a store and pick up an outfit for a girl or (or both) to wear. I’m partial to a Medicham outfit because tube tops and harem pants are hot, but those baggy overalls dream-Hana had were Herb-approved too.

I also remember a long time ago you liking the idea of Herb going back to the mainland for the reading of grandpa’s will. I just want some way of Laki/Keira experiencing the mainland.

Anyways, thanks for running, sorry I couldn’t be as present today as I usually like to be.

Oh, and I think a custom Mega would be cool. Herb seems most in-synch with Gobble, but I’d be super down for seeing Jane and her Mega-Hitmon too. (Though if there’s a Mega I feel Herb is most in-tune with, it’s Mega-Audino.)

Oh, and with Keira going off with Hana for a bit, they’re primed for the powerful Shedinja+Chinchou combo. If Chinchou uses Soak on Shedinja, it becomes only weak to Electric and Grass, and Chinchou absorbs all the Electric moves.

Location: Akaneki, a south-facing beach.

Herb's more the Battle Bond type than Mega, though to be fair in this version of the PokeVerse the line can be a bit blurry. I think custom Z-moves could work out too; Sorbet could get a Hail/Aurora Veil combo, for example, or Tera Drain (Terra Drain? Terror Drain?) for Bella.

“I’m ready to go.” You say, eagerly. Despite not wanting to split the party and not see Hana, Keira, Abigail, and Gardevoir for a while, you’re also really anxious to go find Polu. Now that you’re letting yourself put more thought into it so you don’t worry yourself into a ball of stress. “But Hana, did you want to stick around and try to catch that Litten we saw last night?”

Abigail rolls her eyes. “Yeah, you two snuck off to go catch pokemon at night. Come on, just own it. Nothing the rest of us aren’t aware of.”

“No no.” Hana says, then hides her face a little. “Well, that too, but we did see a Litten last night. But that’s alright.” She says. “It’s probably long gone by now. They’re cute, but not my favorite.”

“Wait, you guys really saw one?” Abigail says. “Aw man, they’re hard to find around Tabo.” She keeps her eyes peeled around the beach site. “Let me know if you see one again.”

“You want to catch a Litten?” Keira asks.

“Well, meet one.” Abigail says, absentmindedly playing with Conqueror’s ball in her pocket.

Keira gives you a big, long hug to say farewell. Hana, still pretty satisfied from last night, gives a cute, but low-energy kiss and hug. Abigail seems a bit standoff-ish. When you first met, she’d get a bit close to anger Laki, but she doesn’t seem to want to do it this time. She gives a quick pat on your arm. “Go find your friend, Goldentop.” She says encouragingly.

You grab Abigail and bring her in for a big, long hug. She freezes up for a half second but quickly relaxes, looking comforted.

“You two have a lot of stupid between you. Be careful, alright.” She whispers caringly.

“Thanks.” You smile back. You know she means it out of care. You raise your voice. “Good luck, everyone, bye!”

You quickly give Hana one last hand squeeze again before climbing aboard Wailord.

Laki, already having said her goodbyes, helps you up, and the of you watch and wave as the others, and the island, disappear into the blue.

You and Laki and your pokemon just get your bearings for a bit, settling in. It’s going to be a pretty long ride.

“You’d better call Jane.” You break the silence.

Laki sighs. “Yeah, you’re right, Soft Hands. Front load the pain.” She takes a big movement to push herself up, and fetches her pokedex from her bag. “Don’t worry, I’ve got this.” She tells you, and herself.

You decide to start on some training. You’ve been doing well, lately, and want to keep up that momentum. Plus with Dice’s new form, he could probably use it. And the others that haven’t battle recently don’t need to get rusty. That wouldn’t be responsible as a pokemon trainer. Exercise is the other side of the coin of good nutrition, after all.

You guess starting with Dice is the best way to go, on that note. You grab his attention, and the large pokemon runs up with enthusiasm and takes you out at the legs by accident. You get up, unharmed, and he leaps onto you with apology licks.

“Take a seat.” You instruct Dice. He comes along and plops down next to you, tongue hanging out. “Let’s talk, and meditate.”

Dice looks restless. He’s full of energy, feeling the new strength of his legs and arms, and their new weight. He’s bursting with physical power.

“You know what, let’s not sit, let’s talk and meditate while we move.” You tell him. “Come on, let’s stretch first.”

Dice gets up and stretches, but he doesn’t hold it. He just springs from one pose to another, like rubber being pulled here and there with invisible hands. His physical presence is unignorable, and a little intimidating. At least, if he weren’t Dice, it would be.

“Relax.” You instruct. “Take your time. Move slow and feel your balance.”

He gives you a sort of blank, dead-eye’d look, but he tries it. He never seems like he’s questioning you, but it’s hard to know if he takes in everything you say due to the lack of reaction a lot of the time. You still aren’t sure how complicated you can get before he might zone out. You don’t want to mistake a lack of reaction with a lack of understanding.

“So you got pretty angry in that last match.” You remind him.

He cocks his head. Does he remember?

He sniffs the air, looking around, distracted. Something caught his nose. From his posture, you’re pretty sure it’s just a curiosity and nothing dangerous or super important.
>Hey, focus. Get in touch with your inner balance

“Hey, Dice.” You grab his attention as he sniffs in the direction of Laki’s bag. “You need to focus.”

He snorts away the distraction and listens. That’s a relief. He was getting a little out of control during the battle. You’re glad it seems isolated to just certain situations.

“Good, good. Now, try extending as far as you can on one foot. Feel the way your weight distributed now, and try to predict how to move with Wailord and the waves.”

Dice tries to balance on one foot, but seems to have a little trouble. He stumbles a lot, but every time he does, he rolls with it or does a strange move here he spins his weight back around. His balance seems worse, but his ability to move and compensate seems to be getting back to his old standard with the practice you give him. You work out the kinks with different poses, all the while asking him to focus on what makes him angry, and what he can do to keep himself from being overwhelmed in the future. It’s hard to get through complicated ideas without Keira or Gardevoir to translate the harder details

“Jane’s on board.” Laki announces. “She didn’t even argue. Says for us to call her when we hit land and she’ll meet up with us. She’s headed there now.” Laki stretches. “I’ve got to say, she’s taking it seriously.”

“That’s great.” You say, still a bit distracted in watching Dice try to maintain his balance and think. You wish you could understand him as well as some of the others. Still, your training and time just telling him to introspect looks like it’s paid off. You think you’ve avoided a future problem from starting.

“Good job Dice. Take a break.” You tell him.

Dice is still for a second, then he slowly tips over, rolls down Wailord’s side, and splashes into the water. All without changing his expression. He leaps from the sea a few seconds later, getting pretty impressive air time.

You guess Mace is next. You’re not picking in any particular order other than the closest pokemon you see. But it’s been awhile since you and Mace spent quality time together so this would be nice.

“Ready, Mace?”

Mace shakes off his sleepiness and comes to your side. Oh! He was napping! You can see why, the nice soothing sounds of the water against Wailord, or Wailord against the water, combined with the warm breeze, warm sunlight, and occasional very light misting of water, is the stuff vacation commercials are made out of. It’s hard to get worked up with such a relaxing trip, even if it’s for reasons that make you anxious.

“Let’s work on that energy control, Mace!” You shout.

Mace floats up, keeping steady, but with the occasional stuttering and sputtering of energy requiring a good amount of concentration to keep under control.

“Good job so far Mace, but I think you can take it to a higher level.”

Mace does what you swear is his version of a sigh, but he quickly and professionally sets himself down and readies for training. He doesn’t think it’s a bad idea, he just knows it’s going to be a lot of work and needs a moment to ready himself.

“Let’s keep working on your agility and movements.” You tell him. Mace is old, and the more close you become with him, the more you understand the subtle ways he shows it. He doesn’t let it slow him down, much. He more than makes up for it in his experience and ability to read other pokemon. In predicting, he only looks like he has great reflexes.

Mace does his version of a stretch, which is really just leaning one way or the other while standing on the tips of his feet. It’s pretty cute.

The Rock pokemon flies up, and you begin training.

It’s pretty fun, you and a volunteer pokemon, mostly Belladonna, try to tag him with hands or light moves, and he dodges them. He knows you both well enough be be able to tell how you’ll step and move before you do. So you do more. You train on how he can best position himself after dodging. How he can exploit the way you move to put himself in the best place to counter attack, using the smallest, subtlest uses of energy. The last thing you want to do is have him dodge himself into exhaustion, after all.

You end up tired well before he does. As you try one last time to tag him, he dodges, moves behind you, and you both are so in sync that you’re able to lean back while he catches you and lowers the two of you down to sit on Wailord. He does it with just enough force that to an outsider without a keen eye, it might appear that he just leaped and rolled in the air most of the time. At least, for the more subtle dodges, towards the end. It’ll take more work to perfect.

“Woo. Good work, Mace.” You say, taking a breather. But you yourself find your energy returning quickly. You guess your own exercise regimen is paying off, too.

Sorbet comes trotting up. She’d like to go next.

“Wow, somebody’s eager.” You say.

She puffs her coat of a bit, but then releases all the frost and mist, letting her coat show under the sunlight in all its glory. She wants to grow stronger, like the others have. More though, she seems to want to less scared when outside of a pokemon battle. She’s always been the first to want to run or hide when you encounter things in the wild. And since you don’t tend to do a lot of running, she needs to learn what standing her ground feels like.
>Work on using her icy coat as (very light) armor, as well as obscuring her
>Work on a move. Get some offensive power
>She needs to improve her (specify stat)
>Work on her confidence in standing her ground. Get Sorbet used to things being up close and personal
>Specialize in ranged attacks with extra power and flexibility. Play to her strengths

I feel like we can do this together, that way she can be our lady in shining crystal armor.

“I like your enthusiasm, Sorbet.” You encourage.

She looks up with rarely fully seen, big bright eyes. She’s not totally enamored by your praise like how Bella gets, but she does seem to be alright with showing a little excitement.

“Let’s try using that misting ability you have to create some armor.”

“What, like Acid Armor?” Laki asks, taking a break from her own training.

“Well, I was thinking less of a move and more just something she can use if she’s going to be hit.” You explain. “Sorbet, show us your icy mist. We’ll start from there.”

Sorbet leaps into a battle stance, puffs out her fur, and a small cloud of icy air and snow forms closely around her. She proudly releases it and stops, looking up to see how she did.

Wailord shakes and shivers “Woah!” You and Laki stumble over. It didn’t like that sudden cold feeling at all.

“I’ll handle it.” Laki says, going to the front where she can talk with Wailord.

She talks with her pokemon, and you turn back to Sorbet. How do you handle this? You’re sure Laki can handle little things that upset Wailord, but full on cold training might upset it a lot.
>Ask Gobble if she can sit on his back and practice. He’s got that nice thick fat to protect him from discomfort
>Try practicing anyway, and tell her to avoid letting the cold out by her feet
>Promise you’ll train her up on this when you reach land
>Go help Laki chat with Wailord about it’s aversion to ice

“Hey Gobble, can I ask you a favor?”

Gobble runs over, curious and eager to help. He gives you a look.

“No no, not food prep.” You clarify. “I need your help training Sorbet. I want to sit her on top of you so she can use her ice abilities without disturbing Wailord”

Gobble begins to sweat.

“Just lay down on your stomach here and take this blanket for good measure. And Sorbet, you come up on Gobble, just like that. Now, Sorbet, go ahead again.”

Sorbet seems a bit unsure of her footing at first, but she gets into it right away. Gobble, for his part, remains perfectly rigid and still.

“Alright, Sorbet. Now try to concentrate that into something more solid.” You instruct, and go over it over, and over, and over again. You try different approaches and ways to go about it. Sometimes she makes it too heavy and it just sort of ends with her making herself really heavy, and other times it forms irregularly and throws her balance way off. But with time and practice, she eventually gets the beginnings of being able to form some light ice armor for a battle. It should protect her a bit.

When she’s done, she forgets she’s been balancing on Gobble’s back the entire time. You brush the leftover ice off of her, roll her onto her back, and give her a nice belly rub. She’s very alert and concerned at first, but quickly relaxes.

Gobble stands behind you, watching. Eventually Sorbet just gets up and goes to watch the waves approach near Wailord’s head.

“So, Gobble.” You say. “What are we going to do for your training?”

>Skip training. Have a chat about his on and off again crush on Sorbet
>Time to learn a new move
>Make Focus Punch even better
>Work on a stat
>Work on general experience. He’s been close to evolving forever. You can feel it

[Hey guys. Sorry, but I'm checking out. I'm just pooped. I got called into to work early this morning when I thought I could sleep in, and I'm all out of gas. There's a 50/50 chance of running tomorrow, though. I know we didn't get very far, but I hope everyone enjoys the Polu arc when we get into it.]

I want so badly to teach him the other punches. Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch. Remember when we briefly worked on flamethrower with him? Fire punch could be a better option.

But at the same time, Sleep Talk or Snore would do so well with Rest.

I think the evolution thing might be related to him abstaining from just eating everything like a normal Munchlax. Can’t get big and fat without eating a bunch. Or I could be wrong
