/qst/ - Quests

There's trouble brewing, and only those who are tasked with curating the Dreamscape may save the night. Who will cull the nightmares who disturb the peaceful slumber? The veil embraces any who wish to try their hand, but it is the Abyss that will judge worth. Step forth, Dream Catcher, and prove yourself.

Dream Catchers is a collaborative skirmish game where players take control of their own personal character. Mend and defend the weary hearts and minds of those in slumber, and fight until dawn. Be it nightmares or anxieties which ails them, find the source of trouble and exorcise it before the dreamer awakens. Successful exorcisms results in healing the dreamscape, and by proxy improves the player characters themselves.

Here's how you make a character and a quick summary of how the game is played. While movement is cardinal (no diagonals) attacks, spellcasting, and facing in general will allow for diagonals to be used. Melee range is also defined as all eight tiles surrounding the character, and facing is the three tiles in front of them.

Here's an easy copy/paste character sheet as well:

Reply to this post or the most recent turn's post with your completed character sheet, and be sure to include your updated sheet when performing actions. Actions will be ignored if a post does not include the complete character sheet.
>>
An important thing to note would be how one avoids the death of oneself and comrades. This sheet covers such information.

Reaching the landing reveals the surrounding platform, occupied by two free-floating shadows of envious corruption accompanied by two hands gripping at the platform.

However...

Dawn breaks. The chirping of birds and sound of a morning alarm pierces through the void, showering the realm in light sending all catchers into the bright oblivion.

Downtime incoming.
>>
>>2917515
>>2917512
As the light fades and the catchers return to lucidity, the texture of bedding and cushion is felt underneath each. A calm, soothing voice beckons each forward into a den lined with various types and styles of pillows in covers. A womanly figure, draped in the same dream catcher textile raises a hand to invite those returning to her services.

>Rest
Choose to gain a level in your currently equipped class (by default, each character is a 'Catcher' until changed) or align to a class currently unlocked.
At a later time you can respec your class and levels acquired into a new class if desired, but must visit the Veil Maiden to do so.

With that, the session for tonight is finished. Tomorrow there will be a realm map for players to decide on exploring, including the recently unlocked second stage of the previous map. Some realms are solo or paired events, and others are treated as a Night excursion which includes the entire party venturing into the realm. Perhaps a merchant or tutor can be discovered?

Above a city floats the satellite, granting light to the residents below. Mist flees from the streets as if in fear of reflection giving way to empty, silent alleys. A soft gaze is met between the descended moon and the Veil Maiden, coupled with her visage brandishing a comforting smile. "Two hours time," spoken a level above hushed whisper "Two hours before you depart back to the realms below."

Each player has one action they can perform each hour, and hours are processed one at a time. During the hour, one may change their equipment with the basic chargen list, rest with the veil maiden to gain (or assign) class levels, explore the city, or browse the wares of any visiting merchants. Other options may open up as time progresses, and once downtime has ran out then characters may choose to >Venture out to a new realm or >Resolve any unlocked encounters.

The distant echo of wood fiber scraped and sewn from bark can be heard. Their work is steady and precise, but what service do they provide? >Browse the Masked Carver's shop to find out.

While vacant, the city often has aught to discover. Roll 2d6 (input dice+2d6 into the "options" bar of your post) and await your discovery. Beware, as being in the vicinity of the Veil Maiden prevents hostile denizens from harming your form, choosing to venture outside of her protection will court risk and danger alongside your imagined prospects.

>With everything now apparent, how will you spend your first hour?
(Note: Characters who gain a class level will not be able to visit the Masked Carver)
((Another note: Characters are fully healed upon the start of Downtime unless a condition states otherwise))

A second look around provides no insight on if you were followed, and continue on with a more attentive ear to your surroundings. You ready your weapon and turn on heel while on the verge of rounding a corner, bringing yourself face to face with a cycloptic denizen of the city. A single eye made of a bright button sewn into the face of yarn curtained by matted fur 'hair' reflects the moonlight in a moment of recognition. In the light you see yourself falling through a cacophony of realms. You land in a dreamscape with a puff of yellow grain from the impact, and startle a nearby slumbering native to the realm awake. You both draw guns on each other, firing on instinct due to the mirrored threat.

Awakening on the ground next to your firearm, you take in your surroundings as if suffered a fever dream. Taking the firearm in hand, you notice it feels unfamiliar in your grip. There's a ricochet mark on the side of your firearm. A curiosity for sure, you take to your feet and hear a plink of metal strike the cobblestone. Tracking the sound and confirming with a glint of light not far from your feet lies a bullet, which you pick up to examine. The design and materials are unknown to you, but you feel a strong connection to this trinket. You place it next to the one found earlier, only to discover a hole punctured through the patch of cloth.

>Gain x1 [Spite Round] (consummable) >-Tap to load into a firearm when using [Shoot] to double its damage. User begins [dying] if not already. Range and damage ignores the 50% debuff caused by [dying].

Really gives you the sweats, going into the dream. Can't help but wonder if we're not the first catchers working for the Maiden, and what happened to them.

...

Hoo-hah, ready as can be. I'll follow the rest of you'se lead. Should probably take something more from the armory... but I like this knife, feels comfortable and who knows, maybe if I go in light I can pull something back with me.

Mhmm. Personally, I like to imagine dozing off in a big field, with the sun shining brightly overhead, and everything going white as I am warmed all the way through. It's really nice.
Makes for a hell of a transition to the nightmarescape, it's so cold there, and these robes don't protect at all.

Appearing before the cultivators are stairs descending into the abyss, each step taken sends the abyss aside to reveal the next to be taken. Once the landing is made, a greeting is hailed in hushed whisper alongside cackles of anticipation, coupled with starved denizens looking for an easy score. Ready yourselves, as begins the culling. Burn away the corruption, if not bright amid the darkness.

Above a city floats the satellite, granting light to the residents below. Mist flees from the streets as if in fear of reflection giving way to empty, silent alleys. Veil Maiden stands at the top of the stairwell, presenting a respectable bow in greeting. "The night wanes," a sense of hushed pride can be felt on her words "and all returned without loss of being. Thank you for your efforts." She motions for the party to follow to the landing, holding an open hand palm facing the waxing sphere. "There are five hours prior to next dust. There are also some new residents within the district below. Please treat them well, as you have done so with myself."

Venturing down to the market leads you to an alley lined with sheets and driftwood of various sizes. Aromas of after-rain woodland fills the air alongside a melody of fiber carved from itself as the proprietor works on their product atop a pile of chips and shavings. They pay you no mind in their work, looking to wear an outfit nearly overstuffed and an amalgam fauna mask hides their face. It's only upon entering the abode it becomes apparent they have a cushion resting behind them fashioned after that of a fox.

A handful of masks lay displayed on the pile of wood shavings with what look to be depressions suitable for resting. You may decide on one mask and gain its name as your Class, modifying your stats directly. You may also ask one (1) question regarding one item each visit.

Entering a previously abandoned tool shed gives way to a pair of minuscule beings. One covered in vibrant scales wearing a smith's apron and the other well wearing a distinguishing conical hat. "Welcome to 'Bolds n' Gnomes'!" greet both simultaneously, followed by the scaled one taking a pair of items off of a small rack to place them on the counter. The other presents a clipboard which takes up half of the counter space with a series of trees and diagrams in a language or code which makes the head spin in apparent complexity. "How may we be of service?" asks the bearded one, handing out clipboards with a request form inside to each customer. "Tis Gnomesday, so Terra is in full force!"

A distant echo of a bell tower rings twice through the void, signaling some incoming event. The party leaps to action, searching for the cause in hopes it was not for an alarm.

All is Well
There was little hope to find the first clue or step of the situation until a bored catcher throws a rock into the abyss in an attempt to skip it across the inky black surface. It strikes a piece of driftwood which slips beneath the surface, turning up moments later both unscathed by the dark waters accompanied by a mask. Normally anything which touches the pitch water itself shows at least a stain, especially wood, yet this driftwood shows nary a sign of it. The mask itself looks to be of high quality work, but is of unknown make and origin.

Downtime quests are effectively text-based role play mini-adventures. There are no requirements to join, and they can be participated in during running errands, resting, browsing shops (which the quest visits), etc. The only exception to this is if you explore the city, in which case it's an isolated event you wish to participate in. With that out in the open now:

First hour has passed. The second hour begins.
>>
>>2925455
This is why I shouldn't post so late at night.

Fishing the mask out of the pitch is easy enough, as it is well within reaching distance from the stairs descending under the abyss. The driftwood on the other hand takes a considerable amount of effort. Pulling on the stiff branch yields ground, but it moves as if a heavy anchor lays somewhere deeper within the void. Pulling harder merely presents the sound of snapping fiber with a heavy >pop< but no visible signs of break or fracture.

>Dip Support Arm in the inkiness

Taking the armament in hand and placing just the bare tip of a corner in far enough to break surface tension, the abyss lurches out in full grasp. The item is almost lost immediately if not for another catcher pulling you up the stairs and away from the sudden tide. Splashing on the bottom most step and dissipating back to a more natural level gives the sensation that the abyss in the area is over-agitated. Could be from whatever the driftwood is, attached to, or caused by something that happened in the last dream. Nobody truly understands the pitchwater, or at least none who still reside in the city landing.

With little else seen left to do at the stair well, the investigation moves onward to identify the mask. Stepping past the threshold of curtains and cushions, the carver can be seen missing from their perch atop the shavings. Instead they can be observed organizing a collection of various types of materials to both decorate and take stock of resources.

After managing to gain his attention and offering the mask, they observe both the face and backing before lowering their head. One hand holds the mask as the other raises to grab the muzzle from their hood, slowly replacing each other before lifting his head. The carver then looks to take in their surroundings, before lowering their face and covering it once again with the vulpine facade. "This mask is not a proper fitting," they announce, holding it for the party to once again take into their possession. "Instead it appears to be able to view the realm or subjects studied how they were in the hour of Midnight."

After thanking them for their assistance, the party understands that Midnight is usually a time when they're delving into the realms.

Venturing through the alleyways, you find a set of stairs leading up through a thicket of tall grass reaching high into the sky. Slate makes up each step, and in set measurements are thresholds made of an unnatural red wood. Charms and decorations placed on each stage as you venture up the slope before arriving at another landing. A large stone dais lined with more slate makes up the majority of the landing's border though only a few steps higher than the ground itself. Mist clings to a pattern of locations, but amid the remnant clouds of obscurity resides a short podium with a bust presented. Labeled Khan 'Troll' Zii below the bust on a bronze plate lists 'clemency, rage, and reflection for some yet unknown reason. There also resides a placement for a scroll or tome yet no such item occupies the role. You look back from whence you came and can see a path to your native landing clear through the mist. What do you do?
>Leave this place for now. There's nothing to do here.

You dive through the doorway, though not in a literal sense. Closing it behind yourself, the barrier shows signs of vandalism given the interior knob has been torn off entirely. As the mist blows past, you observe through a window pane as black tendrils lurch across the brick walk and cement street, shuddering while moving away from the viewport in order to find a way out of the building. After exploring the first couple floors worth of rooms, you find another closed door with a missing handle and attempt to push it open in case it would be allowed.

No such luck, as upon further inspection of the moulding it obviously would open in towards yourself. Leaving it for now, you venture on down the hall in search of an exit. It's not until you reach the last room when you find something of interest, an empty threshold but a pair of wards linked together on either side. Peaking into the room you can see what looks like a bar which would allow you access through one of the two doors you encountered previously, but are unsure as to how wards function and what the purpose would be for this one in particular.

>Duck into your own alleyway and observe from a safe distance. Could be a bluff, or more of them around.
>Rush it down! Victory to the swift!
>Blast it away from a distance. Leaves you at less risk than taking it on in melee.

You enter. Stepping on the interior ward causes a horn to screech right next to your ear, causing you to cover them immediately until the ringing stops. When you bring yourself upright again, you can see there is no longer a doorway for you to exit yet the remainder of the room is intact. You pick up the bar, being able to identify it as a Jimmy from a foreign memory. Helps open up doors, containers, and in general anything that prefers to stay closed. Pairing up together in order to amass a solution to pulling the branch from the water, the duo forms up in preparation. The Knight binds their ally, and the Ranger uses their third eye to grasp the branch. A hefty pull jars the branch partially out of the water, revealing a mess of more ashen branches beneath the surface. Surely it is due to these catching on the staircase below the pitchwater which forces it incapable of being pulled up the steps as is. However, the pull was for too long as a CRACK erupts from the tree limb, sending a branch flying into the hands of the Ranger. Now only a splintered stub remains above surface tension, and a further attempt to manipulate the driftwood will risk contact with the abyss.

Mist clings to a pattern of locations, but amid the remnant clouds of obscurity resides a short podium with a pair of busts presented. Labeled Khan 'Troll' Zii and Ashen McMuscles below the busts on a bronze plate lists three words each, seemingly having a tie to the bust placed upon the column. There also resides a placement for a scroll or tome yet no such item occupies the role. You look back from whence you came and can see a path to your native landing clear through the mist. What do you do?
>Leave this place for now. There's nothing to do here.
>Wonder the landing for the rest of the hour, seeing if there's more to find.
>Examine the decorations littering the perimeter. They must have been placed here for a reason.

>>2928719
You examine the busts closer, and remember your diary has some doodles of these beings on the interior cover. Looks to be notes. [Cont.]
>>
>>2929031 (Continued)
>>2928719
Looking over the notes, you discern some parallel information by referencing the words on bronze plating to phrases in the cover. It doesn't take long for it to become apparent these are beings admired by the writer, and their deeds have been marked with their assigned descriptive words. It's also made mention these beings can affect the dreamscape entirely if requested in >Prayer, though the deity most likely to grant you a boon may have a different understanding of the intended outcome than the requester. With this being the case, these deities are best left as last or near final resorts in most cases and constant requests to them may end up falling on deaf ears. That said, is there any merit to this?

You take to the alley, grabbing the spilled bottle to pocket on your way as is custom to do. It takes some time, but you reach the end of the alleyway to find a dead end with no fissures or dens in sight. Not even something that could have brewed whatever is in the bottle... well, was in the bottle, as it has in fact evaporated into the air leaving you a glass container for your own personal use.

Leaving yourself little time to get out of the window, you hastily ascend the pipe towards the roof. When pulling yourself over the top eaves the Jimmy falls loose by catching on the corner, disappearing into the mist below. A loud >CLANG< and clatter resonates through the alleys, leaving you alone on the rooftop. Catching your breath and examining your surroundings, you can see there's no exit to the roof normally, but there are some pieces of debris crossing alleyway tops. You take a moment longer to calm yourself before walking along rooftops in order to head towards an area without the mist in order to descend back to street level. With that, you head back to the main landing empty handed.

You turn your back to your assailants and give chase to the runners. You place the mask between yourself and the Ashen Branch, unlocking a foreign memory directly into your psyche. You see the stairwell landing before you as the waters lay parted for the catchers to return, but above the well hangs five tendrils emanating from a single, flat glowing eye. The tendrils appear to be dropping a severed head into the pitchwater, appearing massive in size according to creatures you've encountered outside of denizens. Your vision clears after returning from the memory, the hand holding the branch quivering as the grip is intense enough to show color beneath your flesh. Dropping to your knees, you gasp for air as the experience was for some reason intense enough to garner holding your breath. However, now you know enough of the subject to understand the process required to pull the head from the stairwell.

It takes a coordinated effort to roll the disembodied head up the stairs to the landing. Relying initially on anchor ties and fishing lines to prevent the horns from snagging on each step, as soon as a larger portion becomes visible the use of spells brings it to rest on the plateau before the party.

The party steps aside as their veil maiden approaches, placing a hand on a horn as if to admire the remnant before her. She leans forward and whispers a prayer of passing, standing upright shying away to let the head evaporate into the void above. "May you find your star," she wishes under her breath. First to leave the scene, the others follow after watching more of the head disappear before their eyes. All that is left behind are the horns, of which are taken into the veil maiden's abode to be processed into the party's dreams.

"Kill a ward?" the maiden presents with a soft laugh. "Finding yourself in trouble I see." She lays on her side to relax during the visit. "You'll need something to remove it normally. Heard changing the terrain, damaging tiles, or placing your own on top of the ward will remove it. Dispelling effects will be able to remove them as well, but only if intended as the target."

She raises a hand to rub the back of her thumbnail on her chin, giving off a healthy smile. "So I've been told. Haven't had enough experience in the realms myself so it's mostly second hand stories to me."

The realm before you lies dormant with only the sound of wind passing between blades of grass. A distant 'thunk' echoes not far from the docks, though the party questions how they even arrived at this realm, as they stand on a dock with no boat moored. Something is wrong in this dreamscape, apparent by the overabundance of foliage.

Tall grass is Difficult Terrain which halves vision passing through it and movement as well. Cut damage removes all tiles in effect, but otherwise players can clear tall grass with an action.

The party forges towards the newcomer, ready for whatever can be thrown at them. Unfortunately for them they didn't prepare for themselves. One falls into the abyss in an attempt to scale the water wheel, and another bumps into the same device. Meanwhile the intruder glides forward, readying their wicked weapon high. Half the party feels their blood run cold as they view the approach.

Fretn't thee! For a dreamer, wheat might spin as easy as a tale. Though, a tale is no easy thing to spin if you leave it behind in the waking world to keep you lulled. Still, if you'd join me:

A Layer of Red Tile

A wanderer came, as many do, upon a little village. His clothes were ragged and worn, but his little traveling pack well-kept, and held food, a few tools, and a blanket. Still, stuffed with such things, even a little pack could wear on a strong traveler. Tired from a journey through woodsy mountains, the wanderer went to the first house he saw and knocked. To the man who answered the door, he asked "Might you shelter a weary traveler?"

The man looked neither askance at the traveler's rags nor with appraisal at his pack. He only answered, "No one in this village may host a guest until someone lives in every house. This is our headman's law." With that, he closed the door.

The wanderer was answered the same again and again, until he came upon a house a little unlike the others...

Descending the stairs leads the party past a junction of pipes coming from the surface. Candles rest on shelves to provide light for the rooms, though doors block vision and passage for now. To the north resides empty bookshelves lining the walls, and the churning of machines can be heard, though muted, through the walls.

As the clock ticks down, the stairs descending are confirmed. A wayward spell tears at the user and unfortunate ally, sending their already wounded body into an unstable state. Another golem, this time seemingly misplaced, is discovered, and a two person advance is lead into the crowned golem's domain.

Players may >Descend as a full turn action now. However, if any characters are [Dying] as the remainder of the party chooses to move on, the afflicted characters are slain.

Murph suffers no more, and passes on with nary a whimper.
Murph is dead. All actions to [Save] are rendered pointless.
>>
>>2955751
Also OP before I, probably, die I have a question, how did I get hit By Vickens spell? From what understand of the rules I thought I should have been behind Wilfred when the spell was cast by Vickens.
>>
>>2955779
It's a matter of posting order. Being that going by post order (unless there's a readied action or an overwatch) is much easier and efficient to process. Unfortunately it does mean if there's a mistake made early on (which isn't caught and corrected) then it's near impossible to avoid.
>>
>>2955772
Oh I'm dead... know I should have trusted my gut and tried not to struggle
So OP what do I do now?

If at least one party member has already descended, is the penalty for not descending having to use an action to [Awaken]?
>>
>>2955780
Ah I thought it might of been something like that. Still wouldn't that mean that if Vickens shoot it too the west it would have hit both me and Wilfred? Also just to clairfie so this dosen't happen to others in the future, when a spell is cast it hits players in the same space as the caster?, because I was in the same space as Vickens.
>>
>>2955786
You proabley need to awaken since the last time this happened only Wilfred was on the floor.
>>
>>2955781
>>2955787
You may choose to roll up a new character if you wish to continue playing. In regards to the spellcasting: spells take effect as stated in their descriptions. Area of Effect spells will apply their effects on all characters within them, with exceptions such as [Flare] which only affects denizens. Also you were not in the same tile as Vickens, you were one north of them when the spell was cast.

>>2955786
If at least one party member has descended, but others have not before the timer reaches 0, then the characters who have not reached the stairs or descended as a full turn action will not be able to awaken for the remainder of the run. This is due to them being present in a realm level which is no longer in slumber, which cuts their connection from that dreamscape entirely. The first run was a full disconnection because both levels were operating on the same time limit.
>>
>>2955802
I just double checked and you're right I was one above, I guess I will roll up a new one in the morning. Note to self never use struggle again.
