With the move to more temperate climates, the crews were a lot more tolerable. You were nursing some elements of sleep out of your eyes and body though as you walk with Griselda and Iris to meet with Perrine Hobart. “It’s been a while since we’ve talked with her, hasn’t it?” asks Griselda. You nod. Of course it has. Considering Perrine’s hobby is to butcher tanks and turn them into mechanical chimeras, you have no real reason to keep in touch. Though you won’t make a big fuss out of it- for Winona’s sake.

“I hear talk she’s going to be unveiling a Ratte prototype at this match,” says Iris. You and Griselda look at her, surprised. “That was a joke.”

“Oh- Ah! Haha!” Griselda snickers a bit. “That got me, Iris! You never normally joke like that!”

“I joke because I notice your knees are shaking,” says Iris. Griselda blinks, standing straight. The two of you stop, looking at her. “We beat her quite soundly last time, Griselda. Are you nervous for this match?”

Griselda smiles brightly. “I sure fucking am.”

“Hm.” Iris takes a sip of tea, then sighs. “A lady does not try to hide her fears. A lady simply works with them.” She gently pats Griselda’s arm, nodding to her. “Have faith. We have a good team behind us.”

“Yeah,” you say. “No need to worry. After all, it’s not like-…” The three of you feel the Earth shake as Perrine Hobart approaches. Oh shit. The three of you turn your heads to see the arrival of her new Churchill AVRE. And boy what a sight it was.

It was the Ardeer Aggie, a little-known prototype variant of the AVRE. Instead of a Petard mortar however, it featured what was essentially a giant recoilless rifle. But what Perrine had done to it though chilled your bones to the marrow. She had painted it a very stark red, with plates of improvised armor criss-crossing all along the hull. A bulldozer blade had been attached to the front as well, along with a crane in back behind the turret, not to mention the AA gun attachment on the top of the turret, it was a dual .50 caliber mount, apparently haphazardly attached to the turret hatch. And to top it all off, a pair of loudspeakers were attached to the sides of the turret.

And they were blasting AC/DC loud enough to be heard at the next town over.

Perrine pokes her head out of the turret, smiling as she stands up and proud on top of the turret wearing a simple boiler suit, some gloves, and a pair of goggles on her head. “Necessity is the mother of the invention!” She drops down off the tank. “Had little time to prep it but my girls knew the stakes. No lollygagging round these parts!” She slaps the tank. “This baby can climb Mount Everest and blow it up if it wanted to!”

“It’s uh…” Griselda looks more confused than scared. “Wow.” Perrine walks up and shakes Griselda’s hand vigorously, grinning. “And it’s red too.”

“Of course!” Perrine thumps her fist against her chest, then pumps it. “Red goes –faster-!”

On the side, I remember something about Elodie having a fan club at KMM. Was there anything to this, or was just a bit of trivia?

Just a bit of trivia far as I recall. Of course we all know why Elodie has a fan club.

It's because she's a really good tank commander.
>>
> “How did you figure the gun mechanism? Last I remember, the Ardeer Aggie was too dangerous to fire in the first place.”

“How did you figure out the gun mechanism?” you ask. “Last I remember, the gun mechanism was kind of dangerous to handle. And in a Churchill turret? You were guaranteed some wicked bruises.”

Perrine says, “Oh, we just covered ourselves in padding.” Padding? She touches her boiler suit demonstratively. “See? Very soft.” You touch it as well, curiously. “It’s the same padding they use in Skycraft for their crash airbags. Sure, we get knocked around, but we’re not going to get completely blown to pieces. Besides, the machine giving ya a few knocks here and there ain’t nothing.” Now you’re kind of curious as to how hard it hits. “As for the rest, the dual .50s were actually something I had to fight the Judges for. Apparently they think it’s too much. But it was a compromise.”

“A compromise for what?” you ask.

Perrine shrugs, frowning a little. “I wanted to attach a Flak 2cm on top. But noooooo, apparently it’s ‘ahistorical’.” Oh sweet Christ. “Fine by me anyway. Opens the mind up to all kinds of alternatives. Like a writer trying to avoid the censors, oui? You’d be surprised by what else I got away with in there but I’ll let you see for yourselves in the match.”

“Well. It’s certainly impressive,” says Griselda. “You worked on this before our match?”

“Oui. We had the Ardeer Aggie for some time but I was never really inspired,” she states. “But being in the postseason here gave me a good knock to the noggin and now it’s here in its glory! Just you wait! It’ll blow you to Kingdom come and then some!”

“I won’t argue that point,” Iris says.

“Yeah…” You stare at it, then look at Perrine. A tank like that could actually really be a problem. “What other mods have you made?”

“Ooh. Secret!” Perrine winks at you, giggling a little. “By the way, Griselda. Give my best wishes to Gertrude and your daddy. I know you two must be going through some hard times.” Griselda blinks, surprised by this. “Gertrude and I are great friends, Griselda. It’d be a sham if I didn’t give her a good match to watch, yeah?”

“Y… Yeah!” Griselda smiles. The two shake hands again. “Thank you, Perrine.”

“Let’s see what you got this time. Unlike last time, we’re not going to go down so easy.”

“I wouldn’t expect anything less,” you say. “Hopefully you’ll be as good at tanking as you are decorating.”

“Ha!” Perrine slaps your back, making you flinch in response. “I like that! And hey, tell Winona I’m waiting to see her latest design! I hear she’s planning something for an Unlimited team on LGA, would love to have a rival from that school!” You smile at her. “Until the match then, girls. Au re’oir!”

With that, she takes her leave. She gets back in her tank and gets reversing out of the little clearing by the festival grounds. Griselda turns to you, smiling. “She seems hyped up.”

“So are we,” you say. “Trust us, Griselda. We’ll beat her.”

“I don’t need to hear it, I know it.” Griselda grabs both you and Iris’ shoulders, looking at you two. “Two of you get some rest. We got a couple of hours before the match starts.” With that, Griselda starts walking towards the fairgrounds. “I got a date with some fried chicken and biscuits down there if you’re wondering.” She pats her belly, smiling as she goes off to get her lunch.

Iris sighs. “I should really let her know fried chicken is a terrible meal before a Tankery match. Upsets the stomach.”

“Iris.” You smile at her. “I never took you to enjoy fried foods.”

“A lady is not a picky eater,” she proclaims. Fair enough.

“Oh, Miss McPherson!”

You find Miss McPherson and Stack’s sisters all taking shots with air rifles at a carnival booth. The carny sitting in a chair inside the booth simply seems to die inside as they all accurately hit their targets, regardless of how rigged the system is. No matter how well-nailed down the prizes are or how glued their bottoms are to the shelves, they fall like dominoes. Miss McPherson straightens up and looks over at you. “Oh, Miss Zumwalt. Care to take a shot?” She motions over to the carny. “It’s free if his attitude is any indication.”

“Woohoo!” Hoel pumps her fist. “That’s another teddy for me!”

Lo yells out, “No fair! That was my shot!”

“No thanks,” you say. “Don’t wanna ruin anyone’s fun. You enjoying yourself though? Where are the other girls?”

“Wandering around,” says Miss McPherson. “Taking stock. I’ll admit, it’s quite nostalgic being here. Back when I was your age, we had these fairgrounds primarily to raise money. It was also when we paraded ourselves in bikinis in car washes too.” She leans over to you. “Never compromise on that by the way. Otherwise you’ll have Skycraft boys swooping in wanting a full cleaning of their B-17s and B-24s.” She shudders. “Then there was that time me and the girls had to clean an entire Superfortress. Not fun.”

“Hmph.” You smile a little. She smiles back, chuckling a little. “Well. I won’t keep you too long. But… have you talked to Director Durocher?” Miss McPherson’s smile wipes right off of her face. “I’d assume she’s around. Or at the very least she’ll be watching the matches.”

“Well…” Miss McPherson rubs the back of her neck, grimacing. “I’d say there’s still bad blood there, Miss Zumwalt.”

> “Give it time. It’ll heal.”
> “Nothing will get done if you don’t do it.”

“Miss McPherson, if I get some time today, maybe before or after the match, I’ll bring Director Durocher down here myself.” Miss McPherson quirks her brow, looking at you with a relatively stern expression. “I just don’t think ‘bad blood’ is an excuse anymore. Sometimes you just gotta talk it out. If there’s still heat, there’s heat. But maybe things have cooled down somewhat.”

She sighs, rubbing at her nose. “I suppose.”

“Great!” You smile.

“Don’t take that to mean though that I specifically agree with it,” she says firmly. “But I won’t fight you about it. I know you’re just trying to make us all friends again. It’s a noble thing. And quite frankly I’m…” She’s quiet for a few seconds. “I’m astounded that you’d care. Given that for one thing we did… you know.”

“What’s in the past is in the past,” you say. “Trust me, Miss McPherson. I don’t judge. At least, not anymore.” She nods slowly, attentive. “I mean, truth be told, the idea of cheating is abhorrent. Especially in Tankery. But I think the five of you have more than made up for it in time. And I’m just sad that it cost you your friendship and all the good memories that came with it.”

“Eh.” Miss McPherson shrugs. “If we’re real unlucky, all five of us will get Alzheimers and it will literally be a gap in everyone’s memory.” Wow, so dark. “Still. Thank you. For caring. And I will say that I am looking forward to seeing you win today, Ellie.”

“Thank you.” You smile at her, happily.

Hoel looks over at you. “Hey, are you two going to keep yappin’ or you gonna join us?”

She looks at you, then offers you the rifle. “First five shots are free.”

“Sure, why not?” You take the rifle then step up to the counter. Hoel, Lo, and Fanny make way to allow you a couple of shots but you find that they’ve already shot down everything on the shelf. Hoel clears her throat, pointing to the shelves. The carny groans, picking up all the prizes and putting them back on the shelf. You almost feel bad for him. Almost. It’s only several feet away anyways so it’s not like you’re competing for the best shot in the team award. You take aim and…

Wait.

“Where are the sights on this thing?” you ask.

Hoel says, “Oh, it’s got no sights.”

“Yeah, cheap bastards can pay for air rifles but apparently not even a gosh darn blade,” says Lo. “Amateurs. You can’t even zero it in properly.”

Well.

Oh boy.

You take aim (as best as you can), then fire. The shot goes wide. Huh. Alright. You take another shot. It slams into a teddy bear, which promptly falls over onto the ground. Ha! Got him! “Nice!” says Lo. “Hit another one!” You take aim again and fire once more. The shot hits a box of Nerds. “Wow, you’re a natural, Elodie!”

“Oh, please. Winona’s probably better at this than I am,” you say.

“Better at what?” You flinch, turning to see Winona standing next to you, suckling on a popsicle.

“Oh- uh. This.” You motion to the air rifle. “You’re my gunner so you know, you’d be better at shooting than I am.”

Winona blinks, then bites down on the popsicle and takes the rifle from you. She examines it for a second, then asks, “Mmphhphp?”

“Oh, it doesn’t have sights on it,” you say. Winona frowns, apparently disappointed. She casually levels the air rifle by the hip, then proceeds to fire. The shot goes hits a teddy bear. She then fires again. Another clean hit on a prize. Then she fires once more. And again. And again. Hoel, Lo, and Fanny watch in awe. Even Miss McPherson seems impressed. Finally, Winona fires once more.

The shot goes wide. “Ha!” The carny stands up. “That was your last shot, missy!” The back wall creaks loudly, then it goes flopping back to the ground, spilling the remaining prizes out. He stands there, in awe.

Winona smiles, then hands the rifle back to you. She points to the hugest teddy bear lying on the ground. The carny hastily hands to Winona then goes to repair his wall. Winona grins brightly, then hands it to you. “Here you go, sweetie!” Oh. That’s- “Jock would never be able to do that, just so you know.” She winks.

“Winona, please. You don’t need to impress me to make me love you,” you say.

Winona pouts. “Can I just impress you because I know you love me?” You roll your eyes. “Come on, take it!” She shoves the big teddy into your arms. “Take it! It’s my gift to you!” Ugh. On the one hand, you don’t know what to do with something like this. But on the other hand, you don’t want to just refuse it. You’ll take it and have Denise put it somewhere for you.

Miss McPherson pats your shoulder. “I’ll be at the bleachers. Roberts, Roberts, Roberts.” The three sisters follow Miss McPherson away.

Winona continues smiling at you. “Just so you know, I’ll be doing my best this match. No worries about me and any sympathy for Perrine.”

“I thought so,” you say. She beams brightly, happily that you’ve praised her. “Still, don’t get too cocky.” You squint a little. “And don’t think that just because Jock is my boyfriend that means I’m pushing you out of my heart.”

She gasps. “Nothing doing!” She quickly kisses you on the cheek. You groan, leaning back a bit. “I know you have a place in your heart for me anyway, silly billy.”

“Hey!” Griselda calls out to you. “Winona, stop trying to seduce Ellie! We’re being called up! Let’s go!” AUGH.

Winona grabs your hand and starts dragging you off. “Come on, let’s go, let’s go!”

Well, time for the match you suppose.

The teams all assemble in front of the big screen. You stand with Iris and Griselda in front of Perrine, who stands among her incredibly ragtag but massively numbered team in comparison to yours. The judges stand by, facing the crowd. Perrine smiles at you three. “Whoever loses, they win,” she says, nodding to the crowd. “Hope we can give them a good match today.”

“Likewise,” you say.

Griselda offers her hand to Perrine. “You know, Perrine, I know people round these parts give you a lot of shit for being an Unlimited girl and for thinking a little too much out of the box, but that doesn’t mean I hate it.”

“Ah, I don’t give no shits about what they think!” Perrine remarks, waving it off. “Invention is its own reward!” She looks to you, grinning. “And as for you, cheri, I hope to see Winona out on the Unlimited field next year.” She wags her finger at you, smirking. “Don’t squander that potential, oui?”

“Believe me, I won’t.” You smile at her. “Sure as day, she’ll even be a rival of yours.”

“I bet!” Perrine grins happily at that.

“Welcome to the NATO Western League Division, Championship Finals! The winner of this match will advance to the World Finals against the Eastern League Champion! The loser will be eliminated. The team commander’s tank is the flag tank! The match between Lafayete Girls Academy and J. Walter Christie Polytechnical Institute will now begin! This match will be a flag match! The team that renders inoperable the opposing team’s tank will be the victor, regardless of how many tanks are left!” The judges address the enormous crowd sitting and standing in the bleachers. It’s enough to make you feel nervous. Your parents are in that crowd after all. And you can’t quite see-

“Yeah!” Mom and Dad yell out during the address. “Woo! Go Ellie!”

Oh. There they are.

“Bow!” commands the judge. You bow to Perrine Hobart, and she does the same. “Here are your teams!”

> LEGENDARY TANK: Ghazghkull
> Whatever devilry Perrine committed to create this tank, it appears to have paid off. Somehow her modifications fall within the standards of “reasonable”. Her dual .50s mounted on her commander’s hatch allow her unprecedented support firepower. Smoke and flare launchers are mounted for flashy display. Extra armor has been welded on as well, not to mention the bulldozer blade for crushing obstacles and creating cover or the crane for dragging tanks and other items. And with the Ardeer Aggie’s experimental gun, it’s lethal at ranges greater than the standard AVRE.

> And yet somehow, this beast is somehow FASTER than your average Churchill tank.

You stand in your turret hatch, taking a breath. Alright. Just do the same shit you did last match. Do some crazy stunts, let Griselda do the coordinating, and let Iris make the big kills. And you swoop in and steal all the credit. Yeah, that’s how it works, right? Probably not but… well, it’s just swimming in your head. Feels like the further along you go, the more stress floods into your brain. It’s like you’re drowning.

“Hey.” Winona grabs your hand. “Your hand’s shaking. You okay?” Stack looks at you too, a little concerned.

You nod. “Yeah.” You grip your throat mic. “Gris. Are we ready to go?”

“Absolutely.” Griselda calls out to everyone over the radio. “Remember everyone! We’re going to advance upwards at Perrine slowly and steadily. No one go rushing off.”

“I don’t know about this!” yells Hadley. “Their roster looks pretty mean!”

“They’re just prototypes. Prototypes don’t make production for a reason,” says Iris.

“Don’t underestimate Perrine. We may have bounced her last time we faced her but she’ll have learned from her mistakes,” says Griselda. “Alright, everyone. On the bounce!”

Your tanks get moving up northwards on the far east road. You take up position with your usual cohorts, Dalia, Lyra, and Elyse, in the rear. Serina, having one of the heavier frontal armors, takes point and sets the pace. You’re not advancing too quickly but not too slowly either. Just some downtime before the match actually gets into gear you suppose. You lean back and sigh, rubbing your eyes a little.

“I had a look at their roster,” says Ingrid. “They brought two Sturmtigers. What kind of team does that?”

“A team that doesn’t understand basic composition,” says Stack. “Then again, two Sturmtigers means that if Perrine is smart, one is always going to be ready when the other has fired. They stagger their rockets right, we’ll always be under constant rocket fire. Not to mention all the Calliopes. And their Karl Gerat. AND their E-100.”

“Let’s just be thankful the E-100 isn’t the flag tank,” you say. You take a look with your binoculars and see a huge cloud of white smoke near the lake’s edge. Ah. It appears they’re moving after all. How many, you can’t tell from here. Nor can you tell their number. Seems Perrine was smart enough to mask her movement under smoke clouds. But that won’t help for long. Still, you can’t get any HE shells out there, way too far.

What is she thinking though?

Maybe take some of our usual posse. The eastern part of the map looks like it'll be a confined slug fest with constant rocket and indirect fire. Not something we are suited to. The west is more open and will give us room to maneuver.

>Go back and go the long way around the lake.

Try to get up on that ridge for maximum view. We'll be exposed, but we can keep an eye on Perrine, maybe have a better idea of what she's up to.

Or at least keep the artillery off the high ground

Maybe on the opposite side, right on the edge. That way we can see over while keeping us mostly hidden, with the res of our crew completely hidden.

Perrine's lineup is terrifically powerful in a brawl, has extremely powerful long range firepower, but has a severe mobility deficiency on open ground, little mid-range mobile gunnery capabilities, and an utter dearth of reconnaissance capable machines.

Thus, fighting them here, in the confined, broken terrain East of the lake is playing straight into their strengths and out of ours. We should circle back and head North with our usual recce/fast team, keeping as low a profile as a possible, stay on well packed ground to avoid throwing up dust etc. while Griselda leaves Wheeler here to do donuts and make it look like we're slowly moving up towards their start point (she should extract as soon as she makes contact) while Gris takes the rest of the team West to the more gentle terrain in the region of Cason, Latera, Valentano and Farnese. We can split the main force into small units in each of these towns, then once the Recce force makes contact, we'll draw JWC into the box, with Iris and the heavies at the Western two positions, and our more mobile units at the Eastern two. Then we engage them in a mobile, harassment style battle, shoot and scoot, don't let them bring their heavy firepower to bear. Perrine can go fast with her monstrosity, but the rest of her team can't, if she chases, we lead her on, draw her in then hit her together and win the match, if she sticks back with her team they hand us the initiative.

> Go back and go the long way around the lake.

“Griselda, we’re going to split off and go the long way around the lake, see if we can’t see what’s going on.”

“Roger that,” says Griselda. “Get on the bounce quick though, Elodie. Because I got a feeling they’re going to drop rockets on top of us soon.”

“Dalia, Lyra, Elyse. Let’s get moving,” you say.

“We’re with you!” calls out Elyse.

Your tanks stop up then turn around and start going all the way back to the starting point. You start moving westwards along the lake road. “Man,” says Stack. “That’s some view.”

“Yeah,” says Ingrid. “Too bad we’re only here for a couple of days.”

“Speaking of view…” You take another look through your binoculars across the lake. Out of the smoke you can see the very distinct silhouettes of Churchill AVREs. None of them have anything as distinct a look as Perrine’s though. Either she’s still in the smoke cloud that she’s trailing or she’s still back at the start. You keep looking through, trying to see if you can see anything else in the cloud. “Griselda. I make three AVREs moving west with who knows how many more tanks they got in that cloud of smoke they’re making.”

“Got it,” says Griselda. You see a swarm of rockets swarm up from their starting position. “Oh shit! Rockets! Scatter!” You watch as they impact along the road and around the scenery. Thankfully, the team disperses and scatters without too much trouble. Even Claudia does the smart thing and simply pulls off to the side of the road and waits. The rockets explode all around but do no real damage or harm. “We better keep moving or else their Karl might hit us next.”

Iris says, “We needn’t worry. Those rockets were fairly inaccurate. I don’t predict they know our exact movements. It may have been just a blind fire to slow us down.”

“I think I see them up ahead!” says Serina. “I can’t make out the tanks but it looks like they’re setting up positions on the small hills near their start! I make about ten tanks!”

“Got it!” says Griselda. “We’ll keep moving up! Iris take position behind Serina!”

“Understood,” says Iris.

Right, now what should you do?

I'll just repost the plan above as it only got in a minute before Schteel's post and is still viable.

Perrine's lineup is terrifically powerful in a brawl, has extremely powerful long range firepower, but has a severe mobility deficiency on open ground, little mid-range mobile gunnery capabilities, and an utter dearth of reconnaissance capable machines. Fighting them here, in the confined, broken terrain East of the lake is playing straight into their strengths and out of ours. We should circle back and head North with our usual recce/fast team, keeping as low a profile as a possible, stay on well packed ground to avoid throwing up dust etc. while Griselda leaves Wheeler here to do donuts and make it look like we're seeking firing positions on their main force, (she should run away as soon as she is engaged actively) while Gris takes the rest of the team West to the more gentle terrain in the region of Cason, Latera, Valentano and Farnese, also while keeping a low profile.

To add to this, JWC is very good at making static defences, and at breaking hardened defences set up by the opposition. They are not however, geared for dealing with a flexible, fluid posture. Those arty tanks don't have good, sneaky and fast spotters. The closest they get is the PzIII, which is not particularly fast. If we kill that early on, they will not be able to get good barrages on us unless we get complacent and take too long to displace.

Designate our group's commanders to watch for specific areas of the far shore while we manuever closer. When we get close enough or something else happens, call them off of recon duty.

We're in a great spot to observe, but we don't want everyone looking at the same thing.

You relay your plan to Griselda. After a minute of deliberation, she says, “Alright. Wheeler, you stay here and make yourself look bigger than you actually are. Rest of us are going to go back around the lake and come up from the west.”

“Got it!” says Kathy. “It’ll be just like that time I fought a bear!”

“You fought a bear?” asks Serafina. “How?”

“Okay, it was actually my little cousin in a bear costume but it was still a bear!” Kathy quickly corrects. “He’s built like one at least!”

“Quiet in the ranks,” says Iris. “We’re moving out.” You watch as Kathy starts kicking up as much dust and dirt as she can while Griselda and company start taking their leave back around. They start moving back towards your starting position. See the plan now is to go back and split the team up into a couple of groups, hiding them among the little hamlets in the region to the west. Once J. Walter Christie comes in when you bait them in, you’ll entrap them and pick them apart willy nilly.

“Alright, Josephina, time to go,” you say. “Dalia take our left, Lyra and Elyse on our right.”

“Understood,” says Lyra.

What your intuition is telling you now is that Perrine is probably going to try and force you into a close quarters fight. Even with that recoilless rifle as a gun, she’s still restricted to basically knife fighting range. And her reload time can’t be improved over the petard either. Close combat is going to be where she thrives. She’ll be wasted sitting in back. And she certainly won’t have the time to go right across the lake to flank you with deep wading kits. If she goes across you can smash her to pieces like fish in a barrel.

However she’s not stupid either. She won’t take the road closest to the lake because if you flank her, the only ways she’ll have to go is either forwards into your reinforcements or backwards to where she started into a narrow corridor.

She’ll be taking the road into Latera.

“Alright, Josephina, make this left at the fork in the road,” you say. “Perrine’s gonna meet us there.”

“How can you be so sure?” asks Ingrid.

“I’m not,” you say. “My guts are though.”

“… your guts,” says Ingrid. “Wow. And I thought baseball was bullshit sometimes.” You roll your eyes at that.

Stack says, “Relax down there, ballsack! If Elodie says we’re going to face the enemy there, we’re going to face the enemy there!”

You sigh.

You only hope the massive amount of explosions she’s going to bring with her aren’t going to rupture your eardrums.
