The Quest For Polu!

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.
Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

Pokemon:
Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roserade)
Dice (Feraligatr)
Sorbet (Vulpix)

Location: The ocean, on Wailord

Recently: The party split up to get the maximum help possible in finding Polu

“Let’s work onFocus Punch!” you say with enthusiasm.

He looks hyped up for a second, but he quickly has a thought and cocks his head.

“No, Gobble. You’re doing well with it. I just think that since it’s sort of your signature move, we can keep improving it even more.”

He nods, reassured and ready to work. But then there’s another question on his face. How?

>Make it even faster. It still takes a decently long time even with the current speed improvements
>Power. Make it as strong as he can. Commit fully
>Focus and accuracy, for hitting as often as possible and connecting critically
>Make it more defensive. He’s overexposed when he uses it
>Try to let his inner Aura type come out when he uses it

You hadn’t noticed it before, but now when you see the form he takes and how he leaves himself open, you just can’t ignore it. He’s doing the same thing Laki kept flicking you for doing when she was training you.

“Hmm, I don’t like the way you seem exposed when you use that punch.” You tell him.

He jokingly tries to use it on you in slow motion. But as he does, you drive your point home by quickly tapping him in the chest. Of course, if he were serious he’d have floored you well before you could do something like that, but a skilled battler pokemon could have gotten him.

You practice using some of the fundamentals you learned about fighting. You’re nowhere close to an expert, but apparently Gobble isn’t, either. He’s been getting by on strength and willpower more than skill or any particular gift for fighting. But that just means he’s got a lot of room to grow. Gobble begins to understand the idea behind a defensive punch. In fact, it’s starting to feel like now that you’ve given him an idea of where he was going wrong, he’s already trying to do stuff beyond your suggestions. You’re just getting in his way.

You pat him on the back. “Alright. Keep practicing and show me as you progress.” You say, leaving him to it. He shadow boxes off to the side.

Your eyes fall to Belladonna. She’s basking in the midday sun before those cats come in.

You’re going to improve her skills with Laser Focus, making it faster.

“So Bella, can you show me your newest move?”

She flips to face you. The expression she has takes you by surprise. She’s got that funny look she gets when she’s up to trouble. What crosses your mind first is the thought that she might not use the move and do something else instead. What crosses your mind second is a tiny little dot made of light that she focuses on your head.

“Bella...” You say nervously as she grins at the target she’s painted on your forehead.

She makes a cute, monosyllable noise. A tiny projective flies from her and strikes you.

“Gah!” You should and hold your head. It’s a second later that your brain’s damage report comes back in with nothing. You pick up the tiny, inert Leech Seed she shot at you as she rolls on Wailord, giggling.

“Huh, this one is harmless.” You examine it.

But was what she did harmless? Well, of course, you’re not harmed, but she still technically used a move on you. People don’t look well on pokemon wild enough to use moves without orders from their trainers.

Gobble takes a break from practicing to watch what you and Bella are up to. As you glance around, you notice all of your pokemon, as well as Cubone, are watching.

>Laugh it off. She’s just having some harmless fun with you. It was cute.
>This is a sign of disrespect. You need to have a talk
>Tell her not to mess around that way, and quickly move on. She doesn’t need a whole lecture
>Throw it back at her. It’s harmless, after all

>>
You laugh it off. “You got me, Bella, but you need to be careful.”

She gives you a questioning look.

“Don’t do that to people that wouldn’t understand. Only people really close to you, alright? That sort of thing might lead to a misunderstanding if you do it to people you don’t know really well, like myself or Laki or Hana.”

She stares at you for another moment with those big, shiny eyes. Then she grins and nods.

Does she really understand, or is she just playing along? Only time will tell.

You practice on Laser Focus, working on how quickly she can draw it up before following up with another move. She seems to get the idea and works hard to have a quick follow-up with Laser Focus. She can’t use it instantly, but she can do a quickened version that only very dramatically increases the odds of a critical hit instead of guaranteeing one.

“Good work, Belladonna.” You tell her, watching the clouds slowly roll in. Huh, they feel like they should be faster.

Wait, it’s the water that’s faster. You’re moving at a decent cruising speed.

“I don’t want to push you too hard, Wailord, but I sort of do.” You hear Laki telling the front of the large mass you’re riding. “But don’t look like you’re hurrying. We don’t need to worry Soft Hands.”

It’s Chatot, perched on her shoulder, that brings attention to you standing nearby.

“Soft Hands!” Laki pushes up. “All done training already? We should get to the island in time to have a good dinner”

>Thanks for hurrying, Wailord. Let’s get there ASAP

“Let’s keep a steady pace so Wailord isn’t worn out.” You say, making it clear you overheard her. “Go as fast as you can without pushing yourself, please.” You add on more thought. “We might need that energy to make a quick getaway or for a battle.”

Laki thinks about what you say for only a half second before agreeing with a nod. “You’re getting pretty take-charge, lately, Soft Hands.” Laki rests a hand on her hip. “Pretty soon you won’t need me to look after you.” She’s teasing, but you can also sense something else in that comment. You’re not quite sure what it is exactly, though.

She stretches “At this pace, we probably won’t get there until after dinner time. What do you want to do until then?”

“Well, I haven’t really used my rod in awhile.” You also stretch.

Laki rolls her eyes and smirks. “Take-charge indeed. And here I thought Hana and I were wearing you down. You’re just insatiable, huh, Soft Hands? But uh, I’m actually running low on birth c-”

“Sorry?” You ask as you fetch your rod and other fishing stuff.

“Nevermind.” She folds her arms. Her smirk is different now. She settles in beside you and watches the water as you wait for something to bite.

It's nice. Relaxing. You hold onto the rod, and slowly let yourself melt back into Laki. You end up resting your head in her lap and just feel her and the ocean breath calmly.

Your rod twitches! You scramble up and start reeling it in.

You expect to get your bad luck out of the way, but instead, you pull up something you can hardly believe!

“What is it?” Laki asks, steadying the line for you.

You examine it closely. “It’s some sort of gemstone.“

“Yeah, but, is it valuable?” She asks. But even that question loses meaning for her as she takes a closer look. Clearly there's more to this than monetary value.

The two of you stare into it. There’s something very odd about it that your eyes don’t seem to pick up. It feels familiar, like that crystal that Jeanine gave to you to help focus your aura. Is it making a sound?

VOOM! Two wings appear out of thin air! The crystal flies in front of you, and two curious eyes appear on it.

It flies right at you!

Mace is already in the air this time, and he’s going to connect with it for sure unless you stop him.

You duck, deciding to let Mace handle this. He’s always very concerned about anything getting close to hurting you, and you trust he’s put a lot of thought into his actions.

Ducking came very easily. You actually feel a bit foolish for putting so much effort into it.

Mace dashes at the flying, rapidly buzzing creature. It seems to be able to stop in mid-air, and move about freely. But it also seems very confused and lost, buzzing about in spot to no real end. Mace spins up to it. His rapid movement training paying off in letting him also change direction in mid-air, but he seems to be having some trouble keeping upright. He stays in air but often spins himself around or overshoots.

The pokemon seems non-threatening, now. Close to helpless, even.

Mace, also sensing this, let’s himself steady and lower to the ground that is Wailord. He keeps ever ready, though. Gobble takes up a position beside you, and Dice starts coming in from swimming alongside. Sorbet stands right behind you, but in a fighting stance, and Bella is in front of both you and Laki.

Where’s Cubone?

“It’s alright, Wailord!” Laki yells over, assuring the massive pokemon. “But hold on for a second.”

The buzzing pokemon moves rapidly within about the same five foot area. It ends up near the back of Wailord as he comes to a slow stop. You’re able to just walk along at a calm pace to stay in the same range of it.

“Hello? Are you okay?” You ask.

The thing doesn’t respond.

Laki reaches into her bag and produces a Full Heal. “I thought it might hit us with something.” She explains.

My philosophy is that anyone can be a handyman these days with YouTube tutorials!

Moreover, he has Hana and Laki to take the lead.

Rotom is a big deal in Sinnoh, right? If Herb’s from over in that area, I’d bet he’d recognize the name.
>>
>>2938999
theoretically could Rotom possess one of Hana's limbs?
>>
>>2939017
Pretty sure she’s got a move-assist in there, (otherwise physics stuff like leverage would rip her apart or tip her over) so really it’d be possessing most of her skeleton as well. Basically every area but the head/neck and meat arm.

But I’m a sucker for fusions so I hope it works like a symbiote in Spider-Man minus the evil.
>>
>>2939017
Depends on what canon Gobble uses. In Platinum it could only inhabit appliances that had a special motor built into them, and the Rotom Dex having to be specially designed supports that. The anime disregarded that.

“It’s like a pokemon stuck in a bottle or something.” Laki says, watching it curiously and scratching her head. Even in moments like this, you can’t help but be a little distracted when she lifts her arms up like that, due to the way it also lifts her chest. Does she do that on purpose?

Wait, pokemon! Of course. If you want to know what you’re dealing with, use your pokedex! “Let’s find out what type of pokemon this is.”

The dex scans over it, but before you can finish, the face in the gem with wings on the outside, flies towards the dex. Mace gives a warning, but you give him a gesture to let it approach. The thing dinks off of the camera end of your pokedex harmlessly.

“Rotom.” Your pokedex finally begins. “The Plasma Pokémon. Rotom plays practical jokes, which it carries out by embedding its plasma body in electronic devices.”

You’ve heard of those! Of course! Why didn’t you realize it before? An old memory shakes off the dust and comes flooding to your mind’s eye. You were really young then, and remember being incredibly amused. Grandpa’s television, which he had only gotten due to you and your sister visiting with him for extended periods of time, was acting funny. A face appeared on it, and kept putting itself over the faces of the people on TV. It’d give them goofy expressions or make their eyes peer somewhere funny.

And you remember grandpa sneaking on on the television with a net. He ended up just breaking his television while the pokemon flew off into the fields. He must have been trying to re catch it after it got loose.

These pokemon can possess electronic stuff. Apparently aura crystals, too. Although this particular crystal seems different from the one Jeanine gave you.

The pokemon calms a bit, but it’s still buzzing about. It rams itself softly but with effort into Wailord.

Laki peers over your shoulder, reading the pokedex entry. “It’s really rare. Rare pokemon are usually powerful, but I can’t exactly say this one is giving that impression. Are you going to catch it?” She eye’s it over.

“Yeah, you know what? I think I am!” You say with a growing sense of determination.

You’ve been becoming much more assertive lately, and just going for what you want. Why not continue that trend?

The pokemon reacts by buzzing defensively. It can understand you! But it also seems pretty messed up still, buzzing about in place. The hook from your rod is still stick in one of the little crevices in the gem, causing the line to gently fly around.

“I guess you can always release it if it doesn’t work out. Sometimes I envy your culture.” Laki puts her hand on her generous hip. “So, how are you going to do it? You sure your pokemon can beat it in a fight?” She teases a little. The pokemon does seem pretty helpless right now

You also note that Wailord is still right now, so you don’t just cruise away from the flying pokemon. You’ll delay the trip if you take too long.

You sit down cross legged, and watch the buzzing pokemon, trying to figure out the best way to approach this.

Dice wags his tail, following the buzzing, rapidly moving pokemon. Somehow, he resists the urge to snap at it. But the more you watch him, the more lost in hunter mode he seems to get.

Gobble crosses his legs and sits with you.

Laki goes to fill Wailord in on what’s going on. “I know, it’s electric. It’ll be fine, though. Just don’t panic if you feel anything, alright?”

“So, Rotom.” You begin.

You sit down and chat for a bit, just rattling off whatever comes to mind.

“It’s a nice day out, huh? But it looks like it’s going to rain later. I don’t mind rainy days, but they’re only really great if you have a warm cup of cocoa or tea and some nice baked goods to relax inside with, you know?”

It buzzes around, aimlessly. As you go on, the buzzing seems to slowly die down a bit.

“Yeah, I don’t know. Maybe I’m overreacting to Polu being missing. But I just can’t help but shake the feeling something happened. Or maybe I just miss him. He’s a good friend. He’s really my only guy friend, too. And he’s really nice. I think you’d like him.”

“So, you look like you’re having some trouble in there.” You start. “Do you want any help, or...?”

It buzzes around aimlessly with a little more vigor. The buzzing seems to react to the question in hat you assume is a “yes.” It’s a lot slower than before though.

“Oh! You do? How can I help?”

The pokemon seems to have no idea. But it’s willing to try any suggestions you have.

Dice settles in, wagging his tail slowly and watching the pokemon’s buzzing slow down. He’s been patiently waiting for a long time.

You pick up a pokeball. “I want to try catching you.” You begin waiting to see it’s reaction.

The pokemon buzzes a little more. You don’t think it’s opposition, but you’d be lying if you said you were certain it was approval, either. You think it is, but you just can’t tell.

“But, you’re free to go at any time. I don’t want to force you to stay if you don’t want to. I just want to help. And if you’d like, train you as a member of the team.”

The pokemon seems to buzz again. You’re almost positive that this is an agreeable buzz. You take that as the best possible indicator you can get, and gently tap the pokemon with the pokeball.

It vanishes in a ball of light.

“Ow!” You say as you feel a sharp zap run through your hand. The pokeball falls onto Wailord, and the huge pokemon gets startled. But luckily, only for a second. Laki reassures Wailord, and it knew something might happen, so it was only a small shake.

The pokeball rattles once, then stops.

Phew. Looks like your bad luck is nowhere to be found today! Whatever that was, it seems to have passed. You pick up the pokeball and look it over, trying to figure out what happened. It looks fine. Maybe it was just because of that pokemon’s unique properties?

“Congratulations.” Laki says, lacking a bit of enthusiasm, but not sincerity. She yawns.

You look out at the setting sun. “I didn’t how late it was getting!” You almost shout. “We should get going.”

“Luckily we’re not far.” Laki says. “Alright, Wailord! Forward!”

You, Laki, and all the pokemon almost fall backwards as Wailord sets off with enthusiasm!

You can see the island now. The long stretch of beach, dotted by the occasional dock, boat, seaside cabin, feels eerie and isolated at first. As you approach, the sounds of a dying nightlight start to reach you.

Laki calls Jane on her pokedex, letting her know you’re approaching.

“She says she’ll catch up in about two hours.” Laki relays, looking surprised at how painless the call was. “You up to search around until then?”

Searching at night without knowing where to start? That doesn’t sound like the most productive plan. Still, you have to start somewhere.

I feel like even if there is a problem with the machine-possessing ghost being put inside a pokeball, they can probably be mitigated if Rotom likes us anyways.

So, about the 1:
I'm uncertain as to what the results of it actually were, and I'm not super sure if I'm supposed to be uncertain.

It's possible that the zap was all the bad stuff was, since we weren't doing anything too risky really, and Laki prevented anything real bad from happening.

It's possible that the bad thing is a rocky start to our relationship to Rotom, like it got spooked or hurt by the capture.

It's possible it's possessing the pokeball, but I find it unlikely.

It's possible that the aura crystal it was possessing was destroyed, which would have been our reward for a better roll, and now we don't get.

Most of that should be fixable though. Hell, even if the crystal breaks, Herb has access to both healing and time magic so eventually he might be able to un-break it.

Speaking of the time flower, I think you might have forgotten how effective it was, Gobble. The first time Herb used it with Keira he was able to fly across the land and Herb saw his father as a young man, but the last time they just were able to play back the last few seconds of audio. Maybe it just ran out of power and they had to rely on their own abilities or something, but I would still expect them to remark on it being so much less effective.

Also,

“I don’t think searching around blindly will get us anywhere.” You assess, surprised at tinge of grimness in your tone. “We should make camp, and be ready and rested.”

“Yeah, I suppose you’re right.” Laki begrudges the answer anyway. Not out of any ill feelings towards you, but because the answer you came up with rings true to her despite her feelings. You understand exactly how she feels. She wants to get out there, do something. Fix something. Waiting around when there are important things to do rubs her the wrong way. She likes to take problems head on and be active. “I just don’t know if I can’t relax.”

“Yeah.” You mirror her. But you can’t let the moment linger too long, or you’ll both fall into a state of frustration or anxiety. “I think I’ll try to get to know our new friend.” You produce the ball, and all your pokemon crowd around to see. “Come on out!”

The ball hits the ground with a sad little bounce.

Then nothing happens.

Some more nothing continues to happen.

You check your pockets to make sure you used the right ball while the ongoing nothing happens at an uncomfortably steady pace. Your inventory is impeccable.

Laki, your pokemon, and you reflect upon the ball.

I had Electric Seed Calm Mind Lunala and standard Xerneas as my restricted, and then a supportish physical Koko, Incineroar, Kartana and Clefairy.

We're just a month into VGC19, so things are still unclear, but so far Incineroar is in pretty much every team, and Kyogre and Xerneas are the most popular restricted mons. Groudon is gaining ground though, and Ho-Oh, Yveltal, Lunala and Solgaleo are also excellent. Grass-types are really fucking strong, given that you get both Kyogre and Groudon with it, and Ludicolo and Venusaur are monsters under their preferred weather. Koko and Lele aren't going anywhere any time soon, either, and Smeargle is still a little shit like in 16, but terrains and no Dark Void make it much less infuriating to face. Jamie Kean is doing some pretty fun videos with two other good players using off-meta stuff on his youtube channel, if you want to check that out, and Cybertron has some of the most informative videos, as always.

You take out your pokedex, looking for a setting or something else that can explain what’s going on. When you point it at the pokeball, it shows all the things it should. That the pokeball is occupied. That it’s registered to the same trainer as the owner of the pokedex so it shows that it’s a Rotom. It all checks out. But wait! What’s that little symbol? “Low power?”

“Low power?” Laki repeats. “Your pokedex?”

You pull up the glossary on the pokedex to make sure you understand. It’s exactly what you thought. “The pokeball is on low power. It’s in an emergency mode where there isn’t enough power to release the pokemon, but it’s still in there.” Your voice grows in concern until you get to the next paragraph. “But it can be fixed. At select pokecenters or by licensed certified technicians.”

“What pokecenters?” Laki crowds over your shoulder. She’s warm and comforting, despite asking a question you were already trying to look up.

“It says here that...ah. These are all mainland ones. In major cities.” You frantically study it more and more, looking for a workable solution. “Okay. It says here most scientists learn about pokeball mechanics, and the company my mom works for has pokeball certification on a few job listings.” You relax your shoulders. “I think we should be able to find someone. I hope.” You amend the statement.

“We will.” Strong hands massage your shoulder. “There’s no time limit, is there?”

You study some more, grateful that you pokedex isn’t giving any errors on this vital information so far. “It says here that it should be taken care of ASAP. Another entry here says that emergency mode in a standard pokeball can vary a lot for time, but standard pokeballs allow it to last for at least a week at minimum.”

Laki stops massaging your shoulder. “Should we head to a pokemon center? See the professor at the lab?”

“I can’t wait around on this too.” You tell Laki.

She understands instantly, and gets herself and you up. “Alright. I’ll call Jane.”

“It’s okay. I’ll call her.” You tell Laki, knowing how much she doesn’t want to have that conversation.

You call Jane while Laki packs up the barely formed camp. To your surprise, you get her voicemail. It has the default voice message instead of anything personalized.

“Hi, Jane. Herb here. How’s it going?” You already want to erase the message and start again, but you don’t know if that’s an option. “Um, anyway, I’m calling because an emergency came up. We’re heading to the nearest pokemon center in Terichi. Can you meet us there instead? Umm, call me back, I guess.”

You and Laki finish getting everything together and head down the beach in the darkness. But the darkness doesn’t last long. There are constant dots of light along the sand and grass. Occasional cabins, houses, beaches with a bonfire, and other landmarks make it easy to find your way and seem to keep most wild pokemon away.

Your pokedex rings. It’s Jane. It’s odd how relieving that is.

“Hi Jane! I was worried when you didn’t answer.”

“I don’t fly and phone. And don’t ‘hi Jane’ me. What emergency is more important than finding Polu? Some other floozy joining your little harem? Some shard falling into your lap?”

“Floozy?” Laki asks, overhearing it. She’s upset, but there’s a whiff of amusement there too.

“Wait. Shut up a second.” Jane makes it harder to feel bad about causing her an inconvenience. “Your message said it was pokemon center? What happened?” Her tone is much less hostile. It's not primarily accusatory, but it’s not free of accusation either.

You explain about Rotom.

Jane mumbles something under her breath, then becomes more clear. “Stay where you are. I’m on my way.”

“Not happening.” Laki says on your behalf. “We’re going to the pokemon center.”

“I can fix it better than some nursing school drop out.” Jane says confidently. “Trust me. I’ll be twenty minutes. The more you move away from me, the less time I’ll have.”

You consider it. “Well...”

That’s when the pokeball begins to beep. A high pitched, once-every-ten-seconds, beep. The power situation is critical. You point your pokedex and get back a warning saying failure might occur in one hour.

“Alright. I trust you.” You tell Jane as you come to a stop. “We’ll wait here.”

“This is serious! You can’t ju- Oh.” It hits her that you agreed. “Okay. I mean, alright. I’m on my way.” She hangs up abruptly.

“Pleasant as always. But she wouldn’t say she could do it unless she thought she could.” Laki let’s her bag hit the grassy sand, and stretches fruitlessly.

“Do you think she can fix it?” You hold the ball out in front of your eye, as if you might find

“I think she believes she can.” Laki replies sarcastically. But she follows up quickly. “Which means she probably can.” The grudging compliment wasn’t for Jane’s sake, but for yours. You must have had a look on your face, because she has one of her own.

So you, Laki, and your pokemon wait. There isn’t much in the way of conversation to be had. If the topic isn’t Rotom, it’s Polu. Both situations are frustrating. What use are you?

Twenty long minutes pass.

The twenty first is longer than all of them.

Laki calls Jane before you can even think the suggestion. “No answer.”

Laki checks the time without making a sound, but it’s still distracting you from your thoughts.

“We’ll give her ten more minutes.” You answer the silent question.

“Alright.” Laki says. “If it comes down to that, give me the ball. I can make it there faster.”

You don’t make any promises. You might give Jane more time. You don’t know.

You’re becoming frustrated with not knowing. You want to help. You’re a helper! It’s what you do. But how can you do that?

Minute nine ticks by. No sound comes from the pokedex clock, but you can almost hear it.

“Maybe we should use a signal or something.” You suggest as the thought finally hits you. “Dice. Sorbet. Anyone that can make some light. Let’s make a show.”

You light up the night sky, giving Jane a quick way find you. Your eyes scan the stars above. She said she was flying, how she didn’t say how.

WHOOM! A huge figure sets down in front of you. The wind alone blows enough sand in your face to make you almost fall back.

Mace springs into action. Bella targets the huge dragon, and Gobble readies his fists. You feel a strong chill come off of Sorbet.

But the huge pokemon disregards them all and looks squarely at Cubone with suspicion. It bears fangs and growls with aggressive intent.

It’s a Hydreigon. A healthy, well fed, strong one! You don’t know if it’s the one you met in a cave before because it’s so dark, though.

“WE DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THIS!” Laki shouts, stepping forward. “EITHER GIVE ME A RIDE OR GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!”

Her loud, primal scream causes the middle head to rear back. It’s unclear if it’s surprise or fear, but you’d be willing to bet both.

As impressive as that is, you have a very strong hunch. “Jane?”

“He won’t let anyone ride but me.” Jane responds, appearing from behind it and jumping down to the ground. “Where’s the pokeball?”

You hand it, and your hope, over to Jane.

“Light.” She commands, not even acknowledging Laki at the moment.

Laki, still calming down, gets herself together quick enough to turn her pokedex on and flash it at the ground where Jane begins working. You do the same.

“Neither of you own a flashlight?” She sighs. “I’ll need both your pokedexes. And another pokeball. A good one.”

You search in your bag. You have the same, normal pokeballs in there. “Here.”

She inspects it. “Not from you. From Laki.”

“Why?” Laki asks as she hands it over.

“Beside Herb’s balls probbaly being cheap knock offs that caused this problem, we need to trade it over to another ball.” Jane explains. “It’ll be fine, though. You can just gift it to Herb, or release it and let him catch it again. But Herb, you need to authorize the release.” She points to your pokedex.

Laki looks uncomfortable about that, but doesn’t say anything.

You recall how Laki’s specific island culture shuns catching pokemon and not training them. She had to perform some sort of penance after releasing a pokemon before. But trading should be fine, right?

This strikes me as odd. Jane hasn't been purposefully malicious in a bit but she of all people should know about Laki's traditions.

I'm hoping she's just forgetting in the heat of the moment but it's still really off to me.

“Thanks, Laki.” You say. “We’ll figure it out later.”

She nods and offers a sweet smile. ”Like there was any question. Hurry it up, Jane.”

Jane doesn’t take her eyes off the task. “Thanks, Jane.” She mutters indignantly.

“You too!” You extend the thanks to Jane it a rush.

She doesn’t respond, but you’re pretty sure it’s because she’s concentrating. She strips some wires from your pokedex without care about damaging it, and hooks them up to some wires from Laki’s.

“It’s done. Both of you need to register the trade, but be quick. This is going to drain the batteries quickly.”

You and Laki hurry up, initiating the trade and transferring the Rotom to Laki’s ball. The little animation on the pokedex screen would be neat if the situation were different.

As the pokedex screen confirms that it’s complete, the group lets out a collective sigh of relief. Even the intimidating three headed dragon isn’t distracting enough to keep you from relaxing. A massive weight has been lifted.

“Well, go Rotom, I guess.” Laki says.

The pokemon buzzes in confusion, still in that little crystal. You get a sense of relief coming off of it, but acknowledge the very real possibility that you might be projecting.

Jane assesses it closely, taking in as much detail as she can. “A crystal?”

“Do you know what it is?” You ask, curiously.

Jane looks you over to see if you’re testing her or really asking. “Not yet.” She says confidently. “I think the best place to start the search for Polu is in the opposite direction, but I understand if you want to have Rotom checked out. You're a trainer, after all.”

Rotom buzzes around. It’s not in any danger or anything, but it seems to be stuck in the crystal and generally a bit confused about there it’s going. When it flies between you and the ocean, you can clearly see the stars reflected on the surface. It’s pretty.

This

Normally centers have rooms to crash in anyways. Maybe Polu might even be there, if we're lucky for once.

“The pokemon center is a good idea.” You say, lifting the ball to retrieve Rotom, but deciding not to use it after that little adventure. “I can’t begin to express how much I owe you.” You tell Jane.

“That sounds like a start to me.” Laki says, rummaging up a bit of lighthearted wit. She turns to Jane. “But... he’s right. We owe you.” That sounded physically painful to say.

Jane looks at the two of you with confusion. But her expression changes. She sees insulted. “I’d help any pokemon in trouble. And Polu is a rival of mine as much as he is yours. You being involved is inconsequential.”

“Well, all the same, I’m really grateful. I owe you.”

Jane’s scowl doesn’t change, but her eyes seem softer. A tiny smile cracks on her lips. “Hmph. If you insist.”

The three of you walk to the pokemon center. You listen as Jane and Laki talk about Polu. Jane apparently has been investigating people who fit Polu’s description. She talks about how some gangs in the area have been forming all over and recruiting a lot of disgruntled Loanans. There’s also a mainlander gang too, which seems to get into scraps with the other groups.

“It’s gotten ugly. Most of them started as a response to mainlander troublemakers, but became just as bad.” Jane informs Laki.

“You think Polu’s involved in a gang?”

“He’s not anywhere else.” Jane responds. “It’s not a surprise. Kontote islanders are more bitter than anyone. And his family has some history.”

“His family?”

“His sister.” Jane explains. “He probably fell into something with her.”

But, Polu would never join a gang, would he? Especially not one that’s anti-mainlander.

Right?

>Jane must be mistaken. Polu wouldn’t get involved in something like that

[I'm afraid that's it for tonight. Sorry it's a short thread, but I'm getting sleepy and sloppy. Odds are pretty good the next thread won't be until next weekend, but I'll try my best to get something in sooner.]

Been thinkin’.

I’d like to see Herb celebrate a holiday that isn’t celebrated on Loanah, like Thanksgiving. Or just, other traditions from home in general.

Also: I think the capstone for his cooking could be rare candy.

Also, I’ve just been thinkin’ about apricorns lately. How did they used to work before the device they’re fitted with these days? A spell? What other traditional ways of capturing Pokémon are there?

Also, Keira’s Shedinja should learn Ally Switch because that’s a pretty essential move for Shedinja.

[I really like this idea.]
>>

I mentioned Thanksgiving in particular because it's about gratitude to the people of the place you immigrated to and sharing cultures.

But even stuff like throwing a pinch of salt over the correct shoulder to avoid bad luck when you spill salt would be cool to see Laki or Hana react to. (Even though Hana was raised on "the mainland", it's not like there's one culturally unified mainland. In fact, I'd like to see what holidays and traditions she's picked up.)

Great idea, anon. It would be hilarious to see herb freaking out as he's figuring out a way to feed all his friends, family, and all their pokemon and all the logistics that would require.
>>
Oh hey, you remember how Jeneane said that our ability to unlock potential would attract people who would want to take advantage of Herb?

And how that’s dangerous because it’s not an ability that should be overused or used on Pokémon Herb isn’t familiar with since it involves grafting on a piece of his soul?

And how we’re about to do a gang arc? Gangs who might want to take advantage of Herb?
>>
Herb, absentmindedly: “Don’t step on a crack, or you’ll break your mother’s back.”

Laki: “The Hell?”
>>
>>2951781
I....don't see your point
>>
>>2959117
Ruffians might try to force Herb to unlock their pokemon’s potential, which is dangerous for Herb because it uses his life force for fuel and it takes more fuel if he’s unfamiliar with the Pokémon.

I mean, if I were Giovanni or Ghetsis or whoever, Herb would be prime kidnapping material if I could force him to give my forces power boosts. The gangs aren’t going to be on their level, but still.

Who does everyone want to add to the harem?

I sort of want Herb to mating press Keira, now that someone mentioned it in another thread. Not even for the fetish reasons, but also because Herb has been changing from a passive beta guy to being more alpha and in touch with his masculinity and sexuality.
>>
>>2962966
If the girls want to try swinging, and it’s someone Herb’s close enough with (i.e. Keira), then I’d see Herb giving it a try.

I don’t see any more romantic bonds forming.
