Your name is Katsuo Tatsukuma, and every part of your body hurts. After graduating near the top of your class from the Academy, you were assigned your new teammates, Jun Yuhi, a former Monk-in-training from the Fire Temple, and Mariko Senju, the heiress of the legendary Senju clan, and your squad's Sensei, Obito Uchiha. You barely passed Obito's first test, after almost getting yourself sent back to the Academy. Afterwards, you went on your very first mission, a simple, boring day of gardening that got interesting when you had to fight off a team of drunk Chunin that were harassing your client. Finally, after that you participated in a competition against Kakashi Hatake's Team 7 of Sasuke Uchiha, Kiba Inuzuka, and Hinata Hyuuga for the right to go on a C-Rank Mission. You came close, and your entire team gave it everything you had, but in the end, you failed, and had the pressure points in your leg disabled for your trouble. The last thing you remember before giving in to exhaustion was Kakashi starting to take you to the hospital.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMPIlrkgBh4

You're in a hospital bed, and apparently it's morning, judging by the bright sunshine shining through the window of your hospital room. You hear a knock on the door, and turn towards it. "Come in." You say, and the door swings open. Obito Sensei walks in, a smile on his face.

"Katsuo!" He exclaims cheerfully, sitting in the chair next to your bed. "How are you feeling?"

You shrug, "I guess I'm okay, just beat up and sore."

He laughs, "That'll happen after you climb a mountain with a disabled leg like you did. Luckily, you don't have any serious injuries, none of you do."

You feel a bit better about that. Mariko used the last of her chakra to save you, and Jun wouldn't have gotten hurt if you had been a bit stronger or quicker. "That's good. You've talked to them?"

He nods, "Yup, I checked up on them before you. You know, I am proud of all of you. You really pushed yourself to your very limits."

That's actually a really good idea, I'd be all for training with jun to help each other fix our worst stats. Plus it'd probably give us better results than training alone anyway. I'd also suggest training ninjutsu and genjutsu with Obito. He's a jounin from the uchiha so he'd likely be able to help us train both effectively.

You force yourself to sit up in your bed, despite the pain. As you sit up, you think back on all the mistakes you made during the challenge, all the moments you were too weak, or too slow.

"I let them down." You say, bitterly holding back tears. "Mariko and Jun, they needed me to be better than I was. All my traps, all that planning, it meant nothing in the actual fight. Kiba, Sasuke, and Hinata, they all beat me. I need to train more. I'm just not strong enough, you were right, Sensei. We definitely weren't ready for a C-Rank mission."

Obito smiles, and reaches out, patting you on the head and ruffling your hair. "You lost, and now you know what you need to improve upon, but don't be so hard on yourself. Every Shinobi loses, sometimes. What matters is that you're willing to stand up and keep going, learning from your losses as you do so. My teacher once told me something, that the Shinobi that has lost a thousand battles is wiser than the Shinobi that has won every battle he is in. Loss is the fire that forges you to become a greater ninja."

You're left speechless for a moment, searching for something to say. Obito smiles, "You have a lot of potential, Katsuo. I truly think you could be a spectacular Shinobi one day, but you need to keep working, and never let that fire burning inside you die."

You nod, "Thank you, Obito-sensei."

Then, he stands up. "Tomorrow, rather than a mission, I thought it would be a good idea to give you guys a break. We'll be making a trip to Yugakure, in the Land of Hot Water."

You blink, Yugakure is a former ninja village, but after the Third Shinobi War, they officially deactivated their Shinobi forces, and fully transitioned towards becoming a pacifist village, focused heavily on vacation due to the hot springs surrounding it.

"Thank you," You say, bowing your head to Obito."But, when we're there, can you teach me something?"

Obito nods, "I can do my best, what do you want to learn?"

You pause for a moment, "I need a taijutsu style that can work with my genjutsus. At the very least, I need the fundamentals of taijutsu down. If there's one thing that's been proven to be my biggest weakness, it's that. Once I've developed my taijutsu to an acceptable level, I can start branching out more from there." You say, thinking back to how easily each member of Team 7 was able to defeat you in a straight up fight.

He thinks for a moment, before grinning. "Sure! I think I have the perfect thing. I'll start teaching you the basics once we leave tomorrow. I think the nurse is going to bring you some paperwork, and then you'll be free to go."

https://youtu.be/p9HadQ2kTT0

He starts to walk out the door, and then turns. "By the way, Mariko is in Room 113, Jun is in Room 208, if you want to check in on them. Plus, if you hurry you might be able to see Team 7 off before they leave for their mission. Take it easy, Katsuo." He gives you a thumbs up, before he leaves. Soon after, a nurse arrives, carrying a form for you to fill out for your release from the hospital. You fill out the form, and the nurse leaves, giving you privacy to get dressed, and get used to walking once again. You're sore, but you can walk at least.

It seems you have today off to recover from the challenge, especially if the rest of your team is still resting up in the hospital. What will you do with your free morning?

Ok so if we are discussing Taijutsu and getting a style of Taijutsu for ourselves, might I suggest some real martial arts styles to borrow ideas from for the Taijutsu we will learn?

I know this is Naruto verse. I won't try and autistic screech for accuracy or realism, I'll just accept what is and go forward, but while I know it won't be one for one parallels I really do think that injecting a bit of real martial arts can only improve the experience. So if the qm and the rest of you are interested I'd be happy to offer up ideas to bring in some real world martial arts inspiration, but if not that's fine, just figured I'd offer.

Are you asking me for breakdown on those? My opinions? Or are you just memeing?

Don't get me wrong, great arts and I respect them, but they tend to be the names that get thrown around casually, so i'm just trying to understand where you are coming from here.

Maybe something like Judo where we basically use our opponents momentum against them?

All of the above.
Yeah, the jkd part was kind of memeing since its basically mixing and matching stuff from other styles (from what I gather), but the Bruce Lee aesthetic is top tier, as is Wing Chun
>>
>>2959926

I'd be happy to do so if you'd like, but there are a lot of different martial arts styles. It kinda depends on what you are going for here, and what we interpret as being useful with genjutsu. I've a couple of different Ideas.

The first concept is that with genjutsu you buy yourself an opening to strike. Basically pick a Taijutsu style that focuses on doing as much damage as possible in the short window you have them under your spell before they break out.

Second concept is picking a style meant to keep you alive, defend yourself from other Taijutsu styles and buy yourself time and distance to use your techniques.

Third concept is a style that focuses on small changes in the enemies perception. Rather than large illusions you just tweak their perception enough for you to take advantage of it and attack from unusual angles and target weak points they would otherwise have defended.

Fourth concept is a style that would leave you more open to use your hands, something heavy on kicking and foot work that you could use while weaving hand seals so you can multitask.

Which concept do you want to go with or do you want basic run downs on all of them?
>>
>>2959933

They are great arts, and I love them, but they kinda get meme'd.

That being said Wing Chun is actually one of the arts I'm thinking of, depending on what OP goes for.
>>
>>2959937
Those all sound excellent to be quite honest. Why focus on just one? It pays to be flexible I think. Would you mind going more in depth with them? I love learning more about this stuff.

First things first, you need to check up on Mariko. She's likely the most hurt of the three of you, and she got so hurt to save your ass, so you should probably at least visit her. You walk down the halls of the hospital, searching for room 113. When you finally arrive, you knock on the door, and after a few moments of silence you hear Mariko's voice. "C-Come in!"

https://youtu.be/tI55p41FYik

You enter the hosptial room, and quickly glance around. It's a pretty much exact replica of the room you woke up in, just with Mariko in the bed, instead of you. She waves at you. "Hey, Katsuo!" She forces a smile, "Did you come to apologize for getting me stuck here?"

You laugh a little and sit next to her, "How are you doing?"

She shrugs, "Fine, I guess. They say I have to lay in bed all day to let my chakra recover. It'll be so boring!" She lets out a groan, hiding her face in her pillow. "I don't know why I have to put up with this, I'm the heiress of the Senju clan!"

Sure.

So first concept. For this I'd advocate a strong infighting style. Something along the lines of Bajiquan. This is an oversimplification, but basically what Bajiquan is known for is getting in close inside the opponents range after breaking through their guard, and then hammering them with elbows and knees to vulnerable points. It's very fast, and very powerful. I met a few guys who practiced this while I was living in Taiwan, and I gotta say it's really really hard to deal with. I'd Mix this in with a little Jui Jitsu for take downs, which also works at close ranges. With genjutsu on top of this what you get is a guy who puts you in a spell, and then get's right up in your face. He'll strike you in the Solar plexus and disrupt your ability to breath, then get you with an elbow to the jaw or temple and rattle your brain, a quick one two that takes maybe a second at most to do, and as the pain starts to break the illusion he'll grab you and knock your feet out from under you in a simple reaping throw. At this point you are on the ground, you are struggling to breath and your head is fuzzy. That's what I picture at least.

Second concept I'd go with something like Hapkido. Hapkido is a rounded style. Rather than focus on just strikes, or ground work, or throws, it incorporates all of them. Depending on the school you practice you see some elements emphasized more over others, but ideally it gives you a good grounding in a bit of everything. The reason I'd advocate Hapkido over say >>2960003, though that is also a well rounded school, is Hapkido has a major emphasis on using your opponents force to your benefit and controlling the terms of the fight. Practitioners of Hapkido are very good at redirecting or evading an incoming attack, and then capitalizing on the opening they just created. To give an example let's say an opponent was striking to the face, what you'd probably see is a side step combined with a redirection. The fore hand would deflect the strike down and to the side as the practitioner moved out of the way. From there they can either bring their other hand up to grab the opponent for a throw, strike at them from the side, or simply push off of them creating space. This emphasis on redirection, deflection, and use of the opponents force makes it a very strong reactionary and defensive style, which is why I'd advocate it as something used to keep us alive and buy time. Hapkido also doesn't require a great deal of physical strength. When I was living in Korea I met a guy, Master An. Little old man half my size who threw me around like a rag doll. Learned a lot of good stuff from him.

tbc with concepts three and four. More comprehensive explanations can be had if they are desired, these are just kinda highlights.

>>2960020

Sorry to say I can't really help with weapons, I only know hand to hand.
>>
>>2960046

Third concept, I would go for Wing Chun. Wing Chun places a heavy emphasis on getting off center and then striking at your opponent from angles. Again this is an oversimplification, but they got to the side where their opponent can't use their whole body to react, and then overwhelm them since they can use both of their hands as well as both legs, while the opponent can really only use one hand as using your legs at the angles they strike from is awkward and difficult do to the way the human body is constructed. It's very strategic, lotta good footwork and evasion here as well, but what I see with this art is using Genjutsu to make the other guy think we are still in front of him, or at least not so far to the side that he's in danger. Change his perception just enough to let us slide over into that sweet spot Wing Chun loves so much and then let them have it. Wing Chun doesn't really have much by way of throws or joint locks which is a downside for me because I love those, but the strikes are great and with the magic ability to screw with people so we can more easily get into position to overwhelm their defenses I can see this working really nicely.

Fourth concept, and this is going to be really controversial if there are any other martial arts anons here so hear me out before you start throwing stones, would be something like Taekwondo. So here's the thing, Taekwondo is pretty much just kicks. They barely have any punches, and a lot of the time they don't even bother with blocks. Its all about kicks kicks and more kicks, and fast footwork to move you out of range for defense. The reason I'd say this would be a more controversial choice is because Taekwondo has gotten pretty watered down from it's original roots, and these days it's more of a sport than a fighting style. That being said we are in a fictional world, and we've already said damn realism, and if you want fast powerful kicks then Taekwondo is it. Honestly most of the technique is not really that bad, the problem is the holes they leave do to assumptions put in place by the rules of the tournaments, and the emphasis on high kicks to the head. Minimize the amount of head kicks like a reasonable individual (seriously, kicking that high is fucking suicide, they take your leg and you are fucked) or just say 'this is fantasy land, fuck it kick to the head' and you get very fast very dangerous feet. I knew a guy, again from my time in Korea, who had kicks that clocked in at over a hundred miles an hour and hit with several hundred pounds of force. For all that some people say it's more sport than martial art, and I agree with that, I have to respect the power and speed of those guys legs. For an outfighting style focused on feet in a fantasy land I'd say it's a better choice than say Capoeira or Muay Thai. Capoeira needs hands to push off the ground and balance, and MT likes clinches and close fighting too much. This keeps hands free and close to the chest for signs.

So with Taekwondo what is see is basically lashing out with lightning fast feet and keeping them at a distance where they can't punch at us or grab us, since legs are longer than arms, while we continuously weave hand seals for genjustsu or ninjutsu since the Taijutsu style doesn't actually need our hands whatsoever.

Those are the simplified versions of the four ideas I had for hand to hand styles that could work with Genjutsu.

Concepts one and three would focus on casting the Genjutsu first, and then moving in to fight them while it's in place. Concept two is basically less a fighting style that capitalizes on or actively uses Genjutsu, and more of a style that keeps Taijutsu specialists from fucking us over and keeps us alive to use Genjutsu, and concept four is for something that doesn't require initial prep like one and three, but ideally lets us use Genjutsu while actively fighting with someone. Of course any of these four concepts can work without genjutsu or if it fails, they were just what came to mind for me when I thought to myself "How would I mix in magic mind fuck illusions with martial arts?"
>>
>>2960136

Thanks anon, given the ones you lined out I'd actually be most interested in Taekwondo, doesn't seem like one that Naruto quests have done to death and the inherent magic of the universe shores up the failings of the practical art, plus would be fun to get it good enough that we can handle chumps without even using our hands for anything
>>
>>2960136
I really want to do all of them since they all sound cool. Like, say we start off with 1 or 3, but if that work, switch our stance to one of the others as the situation demands.
>>
>>2960168

If we are talking mixing and matching realistically I'd say start with Hapkido and then add in elements of Bajiquan or Wing Chun. The thing about Hapkido is it's already a mixed art. It isn't purely one thing it borrows elements of a lot of different schools to make a single comprehensive whole.

I personally consider myself a practitioner of Hapkido, though in reality I use a bastardized grab bag of different techniques I've learned from many schools over my seventeen years of martial arts practice and hope to continue to expand by learning from more styles in the future, because Hapkido can just kind of takes and incorporate what works from other styles. Mixing Wing Chun and Hapkido for instance? Super easy. The re-directions and deflections used in Hapkido already move you into the position Wing Chun want's like seventy percent of the time anyway. Hapkido and Bajiquan? Again simple. Rather than use the forceful movements of Bajiquan to break the opponents guard wait for them to try and strike at you, then redirect it and invade their space since they had to lower their guard to strike, and then start pounding them with Bajiquan's elbow strikes. Honestly I do stuff like that myself. I love elbow and knee strikes.

Doesn't work quite as well with Taekwondo despite both being Korean martial arts, because Hapkido NEEDS to use it's hands and likes to keep a more solid stance than Taekwondo, but you can still borrow a lot of the kicks. My round house for example is more Taekwondo style than anything, though I aim it lower than they do, because I love how quickly the way they chamber and twist brings your leg up into the kick.

Bajiquan and Wing Chun can be mixed. Both are striking styles that like to get close so you can mix and match. Either of them with Taekwondo though....doesn't quite work. See both of those styles, Bajiquan in particular, are more infighting styles that want to get in close to the opponent. Taekwondo wants to preserve it's distance, because if you can keep them far enough they can't use their hands, but conversely if they get close enough you can't really kick them since they are inside the range of your kick. Because of this Bajiquan, and to a lesser extent Wing Chun, kind of work at cross purposes to Taekwondo. Yeah you could theoretically use techniques from both, but they are such different styles that want such different things that they really don't synergize that well.

She holds her clenched fist out dramatically, and you chuckle. "We need to train hard, I think. I need to be able to hold my own in a fight, Jun needs more experience in Ninjutsu, and you need to learn to think before you act." You try to sound smart as you lay out your plans for training, but your confidence is pretty shaken. It seems a bit weird talking about strategy like this, but it's something comfortable for the both of you to talk about. You can actually see Mariko's shoulders relax once you start talking about training.

She groans, "What's that supposed to mean?!"

You hear a woman's voice from behind you, "He's right, Mariko." You quickly turn to look and, uh... whoa. You're immediately distracted at the sight of the beautiful, buxom blonde woman in front of you.

"Aunt Tsunade!" Mariko shouts, as the woman approaches.

Lady Tsunade Senju, one of the three Legendary Sannin, and the only one to stay loyal to the Leaf. You've heard countless stories about her exploits, she's one of the most legendary ninja in the world, and she looks a lot younger than you'd expect.

She walks up, and looks down at you, a mischevious smirk on her face. "And who is this? You didn't tell me you had such a cute boyfriend, Mariko!"

Mariko's face goes bright red, "He's not my boyfriend! He's just my teammate!"

Lady Tsunade holds out her hand, "What's your name, cutie?"

Maybe having a hidden dagger could be an idea. Without some bs like sharingan that let you cast Genjutsu without hand seals you need your hands to be empty. Only small weapon like daggers or knives could work for close-combact, but the purpouse of using Genjutsu is avoiding it making the enemy incapable of reacting

Honestly, I find the concept of using Genjutsu and Taijutsu in sync with each other really cool. The Wing Chun idea especially. Genjutsu doesn't necessarily need to be obvious. Just a little here and there, enough to through your enemy off balance and give yourself the advantage in close combat, but subtle enough that they think you're just that skilled rather than attributing it to trickery. Kind of like Pyrrha.

Well Jinch tend to be weak to genjustu if Naruto is any indication, so we have a plan there. Fucking eye niggers are the real threat.

I'm calling it now, Uchiha will be the big bad. Jaraiya was forced out of the village due to their evil plotting and even now leads an underground revolution to reclaim Konoha and free us from Uchiha bullshit and restore the will of fire like it should be.
>>
>>2961007
>Well Jinch tend to be weak to genjustu if Naruto is any indication, so we have a plan there.
It makes sense, to a certain degree. I imagine it'd be difficult to feel foreign chakra in your system when having foreign chakra in your system has been the norm your entire life.
>>
>>2961015
Suddenly, having a high Genjutsu rating doesn't seem to have been a bad choice after all.
>>
having an armour could help us in the fights ?
>>
>>2961018
I mean, considering how difficult it is to deal with or work with genjutsu by the vast majority of the shinobi in naruto, with the exception of the higher skilled ninja with dojutsu, it was never really a bad choice to begin with. Frankly having any of the big three jutsus at a 4/jounin level of skill is a great boon.

I just skimmed the martial arts discussions, but when I reached the part about focusing on kicks I thought: what about Savate? Basically french kickboxing with a strong emphasis on kicks, and more defensive than taekwondo.
Gives the chance to either use the hands to strike, guard or do seals.

Not sure how good it would be in an actual fight tho.
>>
>>2961049

Well balls. There's only like two of those though right?
>>
>>2961331
Bee and Naruto are the first two that became friends with their tailed beasts yeah, but it literally only took the two of them being polite lol.
>>
>>2961303

Martial arts anon here phoneposting. Savate is an option, and kickboxing styles are generally quite viable. That being said I don't have experience with Savate personally. So while I could go out and do some research and come back with the breakdown, it's not one I could just rattle off observations and moves for off the top of my head, which is why I didn't bring it up.

If that's what yall want I can try and look into it, talk to my guys and see if anyone knows a Savate practitioner I could hit up for a spar and some discussion, but I confess since I don't know it that well I wouldn't be terribly comfortable trying to give insight about it since I don't really know it like I do the arts I've mentioned.

In the real world I'd probably recommend Savate overy Taekwondo for someone looking for a more serious martial art, i hear good things and the fact it's kickboxing means it's more well rounded. Taekwondo just came to mind as almost more of a joke than anything, but when I started thinking of Naruto it kinda made sense so I put it out there into the running.
>>
>>2961339

Plus it isn't too big of a deal when the only opponents capable of it are basically nonexistant. As for what to do if we ever come across near god level, jinchuriki tamed opponents, we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

I'd like to see, if we can create/learn Genjutsu that we can cast without hand seals ,like Rasengan .Seems we could do it,given we can learn C type Genjutsu over night ,and improvise D technique on fly.

OP said he was going to keep the power levels reined in. So we shouldn't have megazords in the story at least. I'm thinking we get our taijutsu to a 3.5 asap and move to learning our chakra nature for a c rank ninjutsu with that nature for offense and a couple of utility techniques like walls for defense and bushin for tactical moves, for now our genjutsu is okay for now we just need more offensive techs to round us out.

>>2961483
Genjutsu that targets the sense like that has been discussed and I'm all for it. We could also try to see if a genjutsu that overloads the sense is possible, and one that induces paralysis. Personally, my longterm goal is to create a non dojutsu variation of the izanagi. Tricking reality itself into making fantasy reality is the ultimate level of genjutsu but they just stick it on the list of bullshit the sharingan is capable of because why not. I think getting to that should be possible if you master genjutsu.
>>
>>2961987

Your eyes go wide as you look upon the Legendary Sannin. You didn't even know real women could look like this. It also seems a bit bizarre that someone like Tsunade could possibly be related to a brat like Mariko. Realizing you're staring, you quickly avert your gaze by standing up from your chair and bowing your head. "M-My name is Katsuo of the Tatsukuma clan. I am Mariko's teammate."

She blinks, and then her eyes go wide. "Oh! Tatsukuma! Your mother is Shizune, right?"

You look up at her, confused. "Uh, yes, Lady Tsunade."

She laughs, "Ease up, Katsuo. Your mother used to be my student." She sits down on Mariko's bed. "She stopped working for me after she married your dad. She wanted to settle down and raise a family instead."

Your mother never told you she was trained by one of the Sannin. You're about to ask more, when Mariko interjects. "Hey! You told me I was the first person you ever trained!" She shouts, glaring at Tsunade.

Tsunade smacks her on the forehead. "Relax, would ya? I only taught her medical ninjutsu. You're the only person I actually fully trained. Don't be so obnoxious." Mariko leans back in her bed and pouts.

I have to agree with>>2962192 going full support ninja isn't a great idea when you're in a profession that puts you in danger of potentially getting stuck solo in hostile territories. You won't and shouldn't expect to ALWAYS have someone watching your back.

I think we should try and specialize in assassination and sound genjutsu and join the Anbu.
>>

I'd support that, though if we do I would want to learn medical knowledge and jutsu from tsunade and mom, since we could incorporate that into jutsu we create, making better genjutsu and some ninjutsu we create. Plus maybe stuff like self regen if we experiment with it enough. That and a better idea of pressure points for when in melee or tossing kunai and needles.

>>

>>2962214

I'd say more akin to an actual team, shinobi rarely work alone, and our goal is to be a great shinobi not a solo champ. If we're going to be good at everything might as well max all our stats and just fight everyone. That'll make a good story surely.
>>
>>2962235
so a normal armor is a good idea for us ?
If we have some strong enemys that try to go in melee with us and succeed, the armor could block or make "weak" the hits we will still probably get on our body.

(It could be useful especially for avoid damage from weapons like kunai and shuriken)

Also it will just cost us some stamina, instead of chakra. *With time and training the cost in stamina will lower.

*Now it depends for the armor we choose (if we even have money for it) and how many parts the armor is made of ;(plus what metal is used ecc ...) example : only the torso, joints and back .

>>2961039
>>2961027
>>
>>2962402
Having limitations on our character like that makes for more creative story telling and having to think of ways outside of the box to win. Genjutsu and Int being ourtop skills should make us a more tactics based fighter anyways.
>>
>>2962404
I'd argue having a ninja with superior evasive skills and higher agility would negate the need for armor. A genjutsu user who can succesfully evade and dodge until an opening to cast a genjutsu only needs a single kunai after that to take someone down.
>>
>>2962419
Look at any of Shikamarus fights, he plans it out and sets it up for him to get his Shadow paralysis in, if you sub that out for a genjutsu its the very same kind of character as us.
>>
>>2962402
Shinobi frequently work alone we just don't see most of it in the series because we follow Naruto.
>>
>>2962428
I'm unaware of any of the shinobi throughout the entire series actually working alone as a mission save for Jiraiya who was already kage level.
Even the akatsuki worked on two man teams.
>>
>>2962419
ok, but just to know right now we have just our everyday clothes ?
>>
>>2962446
Yes, just like the rest of the genin, ninja hardly ever wear armor save for a forehead protector. Once we become a chunin we'll get a flak jacket though.
I think we should carry some scrolls for use too.
We could use them to summon defensive walls made of whatever is most useful. Rock/water/fire etc.
>>
>>2962436
Yeah but again that's just because we end up following naruto. It's like how you don't even realize the sarutobi are actually a pretty big clan until the last great ninja war where they get like one scene, because for nearly the entire show you see only 3 characters the whole time and it never alludes to there being more. Honestly I think one of the biggest issues with naruto is stuff in the setting is never really probably established as you're given a simple outline of how the world works and never see anything outside of a handful of characters. But yes, solo missions are a common thing
>>
>>2962402
There is nothing wrong with having limitations. However, being reliant upon others for offensive abilities is no fun. Did you really like the last fight where we had to take a backseat to the main fighters? It's one thing to have constraints, it's another to be on the sidelines whenever a fight breaks out.

anon are you one of the types that legitimately likes playing support in mmos
>>
>>2962467
As someone that does end up playing support a lot in mmos, and I can say that trying to go full support with no real ability to fight back against nemies of similar or higher skill sounds stupid as fuck. And this is just a weak argument for purposely crippling our skills>>2962402
>>
>>2962404
Normal armor seems to be comsidered obsolete at this pint with the exception of samurai who themselves are a dying breed as more samurai turn to ninjutsu in the modern age. Though to be honest the more we talk about this and taijutsu the more I wonder if katsuo will end up turning out in to a full armored genjutsu samurai hybrid. Probably not but that would be an interesting build.
>>
>>2962467
I'm not saying take a side line for a fight
I'm saying lets be more tactical about it. A Kunai to a jugular is just as lethal as a rasenshuriken.

I'd also argue having to use a kunai or a explosived tag or anything really is much more interesting than "ultimate super extreme punch/kick/energyball"

>2962473
I think genjutsu is very underrated for its capabilites, people always assume something crazy like koto or tsukyomi but thats just as boring. Lets get creative. It's a story afterall.
>>
>>2962466
We follow the core group but even when they mention other shinobi its always in teams, the very RARE occurence for a shinobi to get a solo mission its almost always beyond anbu level in kage tier shinobi and usually just assasinations. Something thats many tiers above our current genin rank. Once we do get up to that tier then our character will have 30+ points in his skills just like them,
>>
>>2962466
Minato vs 1000 iwanin even had konoha memebers throwing kunai to get him where he needed for that murder

In the sasuke retrieval arc they had three teams worth of genin

In all of the akatsuki arcs its multiple squads against one team of akatuski

The anbu work in teams of three and more regularly, We see that Kakashi/Itachi/Yamato were a team, multiple times we see them work in groups even more numerous than that

6poPain vs the entire konoha village

War arc showed naruto working with kakashi, bee, and guy to take down jinchuruki/6 paths

Naruto and reincarnated hokage take on juubito

Naruto and rest of team seven take on madara

8 gates guy uses rock lee, minato, gaara, and kakashi in his fight against juubidara

team 7 vs kaguya

point is teams almost always play a role in a fight.
>>
>>2962518
It's not all that rare though, it's just more common among high level chunin and jounin, and most of them go up to the low 20s at most.
>>
>>2962533
You know we can all cherry pick right?
Orochimaru vs The third
Hidan vs Shikamaru
The entire last round of the chunnin exams (if ninjas always fight in groups why even bother with a one on one competition/training?)
All the Naruto vs Sasuke fights
Almost all the fights in the Sasuke retrieval arc
Naruto vs Orochimaru
>>
>>2962533
>>2962534
Also if we start listing shinobi that tried fighting people alone the point is made even further

Sasuke vs bee got stomped repeatedly (you could make the argument bee fought alone but hes always got a +1 with gyuki

Sasuke at kage summit almost died several times were it not for the rest of team taka

sasuke deidara fight was plotarmor

jiraiya v pain was a loss

kisame v guy/bee/ayy was a stomp

kisame vs team guy was l for him as well

you can say we don't know about those missions but I go by what I've read and watched over the nearly 20 years I've followed Naruto and none of what you say is proven.
Even after being a Kage level shinobi, kakashi went on a mission with Mirai and Guy.
>>
>>2962560
Oro had to get sand shinobi and his own personal guard to get that fight and the only way he "killed" Hiruzen was by him sacrificing his life and taking away Oro's arms and sealing two previous kage.

Hidan V shikamaru was a trap setup specifically by Shikamaru who utilized his team to set it up correctly ( kakashi getting the blood sample)

chunin fights don't matter who wins, it's about showing the capabilities of the shinobi as a leader (shikarmaru getting promoted over say naruto with his clone barrage or sasuke using an a rank jutsu as a genin show this)

Naruto and sasuke are titular characters and always end up worse for wear on both sides. (VOTE fight 1 naruto is hospitalized and sasuke collapses shortly after leaving, VOTE fight 2 they lose arms)

Sasuke retrieval
Choji had to use a food pill that nearly killed him, Neji had a very close win ( he was an exception) Kiba was saved by kankuro, Shikamaru was saved by Temari, Naruto got back up from Lee who got backed up by Gaara

Naruto and Oro was a draw, and yes Oro is many times stronger than him at that point
so yeah I guess a mid Kage level shinobi can "beat" a high chunin jinchuruki

I especially love how over half your examples in this post are from the one war arc where mass fighting is happening is somehow proof that day to day solo missions aren't a thing. I think I love the fact that you actually used
>team 7 vs Kaguya
As an example to prove your point. Yes, I can totally see where the main cast fighting literally god in the middle of a war between every major village versus every notable dead ninja in universe is a good example of why solo missions aren't a thing. Truly I have seen the error of my ways. Because I'm sure they were officially ordered to fight GOD, the village made it clear they sent in team 7 because why would they ever send in one person to do any mission ever. They had to make that very clear to the audience in that scene that must have happened to argue fighting god has anything to do with missions, because I'm sure they were assigned to fight GOD by the village because why else would you bring it up.

I imagine our character more like a mix of Kakashi and Shikamaru. Having some useful techs, decent taijutsu and strong genjutsu should be more than enough. If we have an answer to most any possible outcome then we should be alright.

I like to imagine a mature version of our team going up against the different akatsuki teams.

>Ask Tsunade about your mother.
On the topic of sound genjutsu, i think something we should look for early on is a fast to use technique
If we look at boruto quest as an example of effective sound based genjustu, the bell justu was a hard to set up genjustu that had a complicated effect. I think we should aim for a simple set up with a simpler effect. Something like a chakra infused snap that causes the enemys arm to spasm for a few seconds.
>>
>>2962691
I like the idea of a whistle, leaves hands open If we get to a point where hand seals aren't needed for it. We can even get into grapples with opponents kinda like obito/kakashi and whistle up close so they can't avoid it.

Sound genjutsu is going to be our money maker, when sasuke comes at us for his rivalry fight we should be able to catch him in it. Sharingan (if he even has it) only sees through visual genjutsu as per the jiraiyavpain fight.

Also as a side I can't wait until edge boy finds out his C rank was something lame like walking a nerd bridge builder home.
>>

>I can't wait until edge boy finds out his C rank was something lame like walking a nerd bridge builder home.
Kek
>>
>>2962487

That would be cool.

But if armors are in decline*, we should go with the idea of >>2962461 a flack jacket.
*then again why armors were used by old Ninjas in naruto ? (just a question; i m thinking about the periods of the 1/2 hokage) I mean, normal humans use armours or martial arts that don use chakra, but the old ninjas used them.

(maybe it s because their fighting styles were still not develop enough ? Or just a tradition ? I mean the use of armors die in our world because of the gunpowder, here it dies because it s more easy/accesible to become a ninja ?)
>>
>>2963393
Remember when Shikamaru did that munchkin shit in Dojos & Demons with hitting the armored ninjas with a lightning jutsu? I'm guessing it's alot like when people went from wearing armor to not even bothering with it when guns where a thing.

But that leaves us room to create some chakra Kevlar or something.
>>
>>2963661
Kevlar's no good against blades, anon.
>>
>>2964873
Hence the 'chakra' and 'something' part, I wasn't saying literal Kevlar.

Uh, don't know if it's relevant but if any of y'all are interested in Taekuondo, I got a black belt in it a while back.

It's honestly more of a sport than anything yeah, I'm completely unfamiliar with every other martial art(aside from a bit of boxing), but it was just memorization of forms to advance in belts. Got to second Dan black belt in like... 3-5 years I think? It wasn't really hard just time-consuming.

Only misrepresentation I got on the talk earlier is that there are a lot of blocks actually.

You actually use your arms a lot, they're just mainly used for defense, what with the sport being based on hitting a big target on your chest of course blocking is a major part of it. That's half of not getting hit, along with classic evasion(which is hard in the getup you have to wear that they use to keep score so you really do rely a lot more on blocks).

So like, it seems to me that it's kind of a myth that arms aren't used in Taekuondo, they're used a lot but only defensively. Like, they're about 75% of your defense, considering the big getup you have to wear hindering movement.

When using your arms for offense you got hammer fist and uh... yeah that's it with offense using your arms. Just swing your fist like a hammer. Not exactly the most elegant, but hey it can work I guess.

Keep in mind, I've never actually fought anyone using this, just in matches against other people doing the same thing in order to score the most points.

If you want anime bullshit Taekuondo though, just look at some of Juri Han's animations in Street Fighter, that actually seemed like a more brutal and actually usable version of it.

Or look at Kim Kaphwan, the OG fighting game Taekwondo guy.
A little more grounded than Juri (actually uses Front Stance as his neutral position as opposed to Juri's Flamingo) while still being an over the top fighting game take on Taekwondo.
Also, SNK>Capcom even in their prime, and Capcom haven't been in their prime for a very long time.
>>
>>2973619
Never played anything by SNK but the only thing I've liked by capcom is third strike. Can you give me a run down on why you like them so much?
>>
>>2973512

Huh. Maybe it was just the guy I sparred and trained with, but the dude hardly ever used his arms at all.

I mean I've seen the kata, I know that there are blocks and moves that use the arms in the kata, but none of the Taekwondo guys I sparred with in korea ever really used them. Like at all. Might of just been a local bias I guess, but that's what I remember. They never really tried to punch me, blocks happened yeah, but for the most part they just kicked and evaded with fancy footwork.
>>
>>2973645
In most of the high level sport taekwondo I've seen they mostly don't block but that's probably because it's just better to not get hit at high levels of the sport. I also knew a guy that did taekwondo that would block a lot with his legs. There's probably a lot of weird offshoot of taekwondo besides WTF actually
>>
>>2973664

To be fair they hit like trucks, I sure as hell didn't want to block them and take it head on. My general strategy when I was fighting them was to diminish space and get inside their effective range. When they hit it fucking hurt. Bruised my ribs once actually taking a shot from my buddy Kim. That was a real bitch.
>>
>>2973676
Block with your elbows or shins? No idea if it would work against someone competent but from what little I know it's helpful against weaker kicks at least
>>

>>2973645
Was he wearing the big getup? If not then he probably just evaded most of your attacks. That isn't a very viable option when you're wearing the whole getup.

There's also the whole thing of these blocks being best for dealing with kicks. Taekwondo seems to be best at fighting other people who are also using Taekwondo.

I'm confident I can probably do... something if I got in a fight. I know how to not do the dumbass shit, but if I actually fought another martial artist? I'd be fucked.

Even my teacher knew he had to branch out, he was also well versed in Judo and a few other mixed things.
>>
>>2973697

See I understand blocking with elbows and shins, and I support it, but if they are kicking hard enough all that ends up doing is hurting both of you. Mostly the other guy who's doing the kicking really. I' broke a guys instep with a good sharp elbow block once (on accident actually, and i felt fucking terrible about it.) But i dont wanna do thst in a friendly spar. And there's also a good amount of timing needed there, which is really hard with the guys who are really good cause their legs are so damn fast. Seriously, so dam fucking fast and it's such a small target. Most of the time if I did try (before that unfortunate accident) I'd miss with the elbow and they'd just end up kicking by arm, and I mean better my arm than my body, but these were bruising blows you know? I prefer not to take that kind of punishment if I don't have to. Backing out of range or diving inside of their range just worked so much better for me once I got the hang of it.
>>
>>2973712

Naw, we werent wearing full hogu, though we had on the helmets and the pads on our shins and fore arms and mouth guards.

Taekwondo is better than nothing. If you can dictate the terms of the fight it could maybe go your way. The guys I sparred with were no slouches, it was challenging, it's just that if I did manage to get in, or ate a kick for the sake of getting in, then once I was inside their range it was pretty much over.
>>
>>2973629
SNK have always had the more technical games. And unlike Capcom, they've stuck with that idea.
SNK fighters are a bit more opaque at the outset, harder to just pick up and play than Capcom's, but that harsh learning curve is rewarding as hell once you're through it, with a deeper game in there.
Also, SNK can still put a good fighting game out, unlike Capcom.

Lady Tsunade sure seems like a strange one. As you look at her, you notice that although her body may have the appearance of a young woman, her eyes told a different story. There was a wisdom and knowledge in her gaze that clearly showed she had experienced more than most Shinobi ever experience. You really were face-to-face with one of the Three Legendary Sannin. "My mother never told me she was trained by you, what was she like then?"

https://youtu.be/99Y6s434UAI

She taps her chin, "She was strong. I met her because she's the niece of someone I... was close to. I normally didn't train anyone, Jiraiya was always more of a teacher than I was. But, she came to me after a failed mission, wanting to learn how to better protect and help her teammates. I taught her medical ninjutsu, and took her on as my disciple during the Third War. She actually saved my ass a few times. She met your dad during the war too, that's Kurou Tatsukuma, right?" She asks, you blink and nod. "Yeah, I thought so. I got an invitation to the wedding, but I never actually went, so I wasn't sure I remembered right. She saved his life on the battlefield, originally. If she'd been a few seconds slower, he likely would have bled out." You see Lady Tsunade shudder slightly, "Anyways, after the war was over, I decided to leave Konoha, and she decided to stay with your dad, so we parted ways. I haven't really seen her since."

You blink. You never imagined your mother, who you've never seen hurt a fly actually fought alongside one of the Legendary Sannin in the war. The fact that at your age, your mother was fighting foreign shinobi and putting her life on the line is something of a shock, but it makes you want to work harder and get stronger.

You bow your head, "Thank you, Tsunade-sama."

She laughs, "You're too formal, kid. I have no idea where you got that from, Shizune wasn't that polite from what I remember." You blush somewhat, but you try to keep from showing the embarassment on your face as you turn towards Mariko.

"Obito-sensei came by and told you about how we're visiting the Land of Hot Water right?" You ask.

She blinks, "He did what? Why? Is it a mission!?" She perks up, excitedly, even though she was sunk into her bed, pouting just a few seconds ago.

You shake your head, "No, a vacation. He says it'll be a good chance to rest up and train a bit."

She groans, "I don't want a dumb vacation, I want a mission!"

Tsunade smacks her on the head, "Don't be so ungrateful. Plus, I've heard there are some fantastic casinos in Yugakure!" She grins widely, only for Mariko to sigh, "There's no way you're coming along! An old lady like you would just slow us down!" She says, and Tsunade shoots her a glare. Before the two bicker anymore, you stand up, waving to Mariko and bowing to Tsunade. You leave the room, glancing out the window to see it's beginning to approach noon.

You decide to pay Jun a visit. He's your teammate too, after all, and you're not going to visit Mariko without making sure Jun is alright as well. You search for Room 208, and upon finding it, you knock before letting yourself in. As you enter, you see the hospital bed is empty, it takes you a few moments of scanning over the room before you see Jun.

Jun has fashioned a harness out of the blanket of the bed, you see him hanging from the ceiling by his feet, forcing his body up. As he works out, he looks at you, waving with his free hand. "Sorry Katsuo! I'm just doing my morning exercises! Please, give me a few moments." He says. You stand and watch as he works. Eventually, he finishes his work out, and reaches up, untying the make-shift rope and falling to the ground, only to catch himself and land safely.

"Morning exercises, eh?" You ask, looking him over. He chuckles and shrugs. "The monks of the Fire Temple worked us hard. Our bodies, our minds, and our spirits must be in the best possible shape they can be in to properly channel our chakra and achieve enlightenment as the Sage of the Six Paths taught us." He recites the words like he's practiced them a thousand times. "It feels weird having hair now." He laughs ruffling his own hair.

He really doesn't seem to be showing any signs of pain or injury at all. You're impressed by how decent he seems after losing the exercise. Mariko tried to hide it, but you could tell the loss devastated her as much as it did you, but... Jun seems physically and emotionally fine.

You pause for a few moments, looking at your teammate. "How are you feeling? Are you sure you're well enough to be doing this?" You ask. Even though he doesn't look too bad, you don't want his injuries to get worse because he refused to stay in bed.

He shrugs, "I couldn't stand just laying in bed all day. Besides, I don't want to miss a day of training. Next time, we'll all be ready and we won't lose!" He says with a grin. At least he's retained his optimism.

You smile and nod, "I'm sure we'll all train more. It might be tougher to catch up though, Team 7 have probably left on their mission by now." If only you guys had won that C-Rank mission, but unfortunately, things didn't work out like that. "At the very least, it showed us what skilled we each need to work on." You say, thoughtfully. All the talk of training and your failed mission starts to make you sad, so you change the subject. "You never actually did tell me what your time at the Fire Temple was like before Mariko interrupted, y'know."

Jun's grin grows wider and he nods, "Oh, you're right! I forgot about that. Well, uh... my family originated from a village built around the Fire Temple, most of my family served with the Temple in some way, at least. I was the third child and second son of my family, so I was pretty much always going to be a monk. I left my home and started living at the Temple when I was six. The monks taught us how to harness and control our chakra, and once our bodies, minds, and spirits were in the top condition, they would begin to teach us the Way of the Six Paths, and many of the secret jutsu known only to the Fire Temple. I didn't really get that far before I left." He chuckles a bit, "Sorry."

You shrug, "They clearly got you in better shape than me, so at least you have that."

He laughs, "Maybe, but I can't do all those fancy tricks you do. The Monks only taught us to fight in very controlled areas, and we definitely weren't allowed to set traps, or use a Genjutsu on our opponents."

You take a seat next to Jun, "So, when Obito came by, did he tell you about the trip to the Land of Hot Water?" You ask, to which Jun nods. Apparently Obito only failed to tell Mariko, he probably knew she wouldn't be too happy about it.

"He said it'd be a good chance to relax and rest up. I'm pretty excited about it! I've never been to a hot springs before, or even left the Land of Fire! I'm excited to see what it's like up there." Jun grins widely, he really sees the bright side in everything, doesn't he? Although, in a way, you do agree with him. You've never even really left Konoha, you've only been outside the village gate four times in your life and none of those were for more than a few hours. Now, you'll be travelling to an entire different nation, albeit one with a defunct shinobi village.

"It used to have an active village, and their Shinobi fought alongside us in the Third War, but after we signed the treaty of Kannabi Bridge, they officially shut down their village to external forces, and focused primarily on serving as a vacation destination. It's supposed to be the best place you can visit, everything you could want to relax on a vacation to a foreign visit is said to be there. The village head, the Yukage, runs an amusement park. It's certainly an interesting place." You recall a book you read on pacifism in the Shinobi world, written by a scholar from Yugakure and focusing heavily on the village as an example.

Jun looks at you funnily, "Wow! How you know all this stuff is beyond me, Katsuo. Well, what do you think of the trip?" He asks.

You think for a few seconds. "Obito said he would train me while we were there, teach my a fighting style so I can actually be somewhat useful in a fight. I need to at least get the basics of taijutsu down before the Chunin Exams." Jun nods, and then looks at you from the corner of his eye.

"As long as you take a break from training to have some fun as well," He says, "The Monks taught us that even the strongest man must take breaks sometimes." He does his best to sound wise, but coming from his voice, it doesn't really work that well. You shrug, the recreational activities available at the Land of Hot Water wasn't what interested you, really. One-on-one training with a Jonin, now that was likely to be something special. You weren't intending to fail your team another time. Next time, you have to be as prepared as you can be.

"So, how long are you stuck here?" You ask, looking around the barren hospital room. Jun sighs. "All of today. I though meditation would make it a breeze, but I haven't been able to meditate the same since I decided I wanted to be a Shinobi. It's so boring here, Katsuo. You're lucky you're free to leave." Both Jun and Mariko are clearly pretty miserable being stuck in these rooms all day, but it's not like there's that much you can do.

You shrug, "I was lucky I wasn't more injured. I thought I might not ever move my leg again there for a little bit. Luckily it wasn't permanent at all. Team 7 are pretty scary." You say, rubbing your knee, where Hinata shut down your pressure point and disabled chakra flow through your leg.

Jun nods, "I can see why Sasuke was at the top of the class. He's pretty much better than us at almost everything." Jun laughs, but there is some truth to the words. Sasuke is the Hokage's son, and seems to be a prodigy at everything he touches. You're just lucky you lost to him instead of someone like Choji.

"We'll get him at the Exams, right?" You say, offering Jun a supportive smile. Jun grins back and gives you a thumbs up. "Right!"

You exchange a few more pleasantries and some smalltalk before eventually you leave his room. You've paid a visit to both of your teammates, and you're pretty much sick of this hospital by now. You quickly find the exit, and step out into the fresh Konoha air. It's afternoon, and the streets are fairly busy now. Team 7's probably already left for the Land of Waves, but what will you do with the rest of your day?

>>2987900
Yeah, its pretty disappointing that Naruto quests never reach a conclusion. You have a well stablished setting with over two decades of lore before Naruto Bullshits his way into Genin and a pretty straightforward storyline in a world that wouldn't bait an eye to anons minmaxing into the top tier. And with the exception of people that try to change the setting (or cover plotholes) like Mini or HokageQM here its not that hard to follow.

You can even ignore some of the stupid things that happen later like
>lol Hashirama cells
>lol Kaguya
and stop at Madara/Akatsuki.

But I can imagine authors getting annoyed over things like people ruining their plotlines, overreacting to consequences or being pedantic over which waifu the want to get.I am reading Laze's,just got Kurotsuchi being introduced and they were super annoying with that shit.

And I also wish there were more variety in this quests but people always push for tai / nin and ask for some super unique/bullshit bloodline because "how are we gonna be relevant otherwise",while ignoring other interesting combinations like maybe combining gen with seals to make traps or ignoring other broken things like nature chakra.
>>
>>2987900
Technically mini finished. If they never pick it up again we had a conclusion to the current storyline.

Konoha clan quest actually got post time skip, moved to akun "for the good of the quest", and then died because apparently the players there couldn't be assed to read 22 threads to catch up.

Wargle was getting close to timeskip then died.

There was another decent quest or two floating around that then died. It's so weird shonen quests can never seen to make it past the halfway mark.
>>
>>2988484
Heck I even ran a couple for a few threads but yeah it's hard to wanna stick to a quest but I would have thought somebody else would have managed by now

anonkun's just full of the MC fucking every girl and I cant stand that kinda shit

>Konoha clan quest actually got post time skip, moved to akun "for the good of the quest", and then died because apparently the players there couldn't be assed to read 22 threads to catch up.
Honestly I'm still pissed about that. Gargoyle quest was one thing since it was only one qst for a couple threads but for God's sake how could he think moving a quest on a whole new site, especially one reviled by so many anons here, when it was so far along it was post time skip was a good idea? If most anons weren't even willing to switch boards to check on quests after they were kicked off tg into qst, what makes you think they'll bother switching sites. It just annoyed me so much.
>>
>>2988519
To be fair the quest itself did end up jumping the shark

It seems like a bit of a fluke because all the other stuff he's produced has been pretty mediocre
>>
>>2988519
I'm more pissed he convinced another qm I liked into jumping ship with a quest that was a good few threads in as well when that had just happened to him.

I just didn't like that every fight with the autistic one devolved into punching things really really hard rather than do anything else. Also the older brother character never grew or changed.
>>
>>2988749
Yea Hiki (I think that was the name?) started getting his shit pushed in because of that. The older cousin (Senju?) actually did start getting his shit together just before the timeskip. I liked him being a mentor to nart and his cousin.
>>
The thing that annoyed me the most was how he often forgot the standing of things and that made him not take things seriously:
Sinchu, clearly introduced as a sleaze-bag and joke character with an implied hidden badass side (cause Anbu) gets fucked over when played like that. Then fuck you, we'll get him straight, but it's not as fun.

Taka had a fluke in reviving one guy because of crit and the secret power of the one revived and suddenly LUL NOW YOU CAN BRING BACK THE DEAD.

Hiki being incredibly headstrong and punching shit was because he didn't need anything else, he had 5 str for fuck's sake, and it worked until suddenly it doesn't. Mostly because of overconfidence in his strength, but it's not like he had a rain check before.

Jokes and gags that were took too far, or that suddenly weren't played for laughs anymore.
Set your fucking tone man.
That one shitty cross-over thread.

However there's really no point in ranting in this thread. Sorry OP for taking up space in an unrelated tangent.

You consider going to visit Team 10, but you only saw them a couple of days ago. It might be a bit weird to go visit them so soon after you last saw them. You're not really sure on the etiquette of these sorts of things, you've never really... had friends before. The most you had was Shino, who you would sit and eat lunch with during the Academy, but even then, throughout all the years of you eating together, you can only remember a handful of words exchanged between the two of you.

You sigh, deciding you're overthinking it, and make your way towards the training fields. If there's one thing that can always get your mind off of your problems, it's training. You arrive at the designated training field for Team 9, and take a look around. It feels a bit odd to see it so empty. You're used to the presence of Obito, Jun and Mariko, who would all usually be chattering away at a time like this. You have a lot of free time today, and also a lot of angst to work through, so you quickly work through some stretches, to make sure that Hinata's attack wouldn't cause any issues with your training, and then all that's left to do is decide how you want to train.

You understand the basic principles of the Tree Climbing training, it's one of the most famous training methods in Konoha, and even though most details of the lives and training of active Shinobi aren't meant to be public information for you, even you know how to do it. Sort of. You've never actually done this sort of thing before, but you know the key is to reach and maintain the perfect balance of Chakra to keep your feet magnetized to the tree.

Not enough Chakra, and you'll fall off the tree, unable to keep yourself attached. Too much, and the bark will splinter and you'll be pushed off of the tree. It's a balancing act that teaches better Chakra control. You've never been outstanding at Chakra control, and you've always had greater Spiritual Energy than Physical, meaning you have a natural imbalance in your Chakra systems, one that has only gotten worse as you've trained your mental and spiritual abilities much more than your physical ones while at the Academy. You spend a few moments just focusing on breathing and letting your Chakra flow through your body in its natural cycle. Once you feel you have a good handle on all the energy in your body, you pull a kunai from your pocket, and rush towards the tree, beginning to channel your Chakra to your feet.

You're not expecting to get super high when you start out, simply trying to gauge how much Chakra you need to climb the tree. You take your first few steps onto the tree, and then feel yourself slipping back down. You quickly mark your progress before the Chakra in your feet holding you to the tree start to fizzle out, returning to its natural cycle. You're not used to keeping all your Chakra in one place like that, it's more difficult than you anticipated. You look back towards the tree and let out a sigh to see that the cut you left in the tree bark isn't even taller than you, making it to just about the height of your forehead protector.

"That's one..." You say, rubbing the back of your head.

You try again, but this time the Chakra quickly becomes overwhelming, and as the bark splinters under your feet, you feel yourself being pushed away from the tree. You made it a bit taller this time, but not much, and you end up falling flat onto your back. "Two," you grunt, from your position in the dirt. You stare up at the tree, which seems to stretch up towards the heavens forever, and the fact that you've barely made it a fraction up the length of the trunk is frustrating, but you refuse to let it stop you.

You try again and again, but each time, something goes wrong. You count each one aloud, all 158 attempts, and all of them failures. For most, your chakra control is too spotty and inconsistent, and you simply lose grip on the tree. For a few, you use too much chakra, and end up pushing yourself away from it. There was even one where your sandal got stuck on a tree branch and tripped you up. By the end, you're sweaty, sore, and just had the wind knocked out of you from the fall. You look up to your most recent marking on the tree, a cut almost half-way up. You're making progress, but it's not enough. How are you supposed to be keep up with everyone else if you can't even climb a damn tree?

"One-hundred fifty-nine..." You mutter bitterly to yourself, forcing yourself to climb back up to your feet. You're exhausted, the sun has already set, and you're not sure you even have enough stamina left to make it a few feet up the tree, but you don't want to quit now. As you stand, breathing heavily and trying to decide what to do, you hear strange sounds, almost like fighting in the adjacent training ground. You're not sure which Team was assigned that one, but you're pretty sure it wasn't anyone in your graduating class. Likely just someone else getting some late night training in, although you never know...

On the other hand, you're exhausted. You haven't seen your family all day, and you really, really miss your bed. The idea of going home, scarfing down your mom's homemade cooking and crashing in your bedroom does sound really appealing, and you'll likely want to be rested for your trip tomorrow.

You're too tired to keep going, and you know that if you do, you'll only end up overworking yourself, and you might even get injured by pushing yourself too far. So, you decide to take a break for the day, but before heading home, you decide to go check out the other training ground. It's most likely nothing, but it doesn't hurt to check, and maybe if you're lucky whoever it is might be able to give you some tips on how to better climb the tree.

You exit the training ground and walk towards the adjacent one. As you enter the other training grounds, you see the source of the noise. A lone boy, who looks to be about your age, maybe a bit older than you, is going through a blindingly fast series of punches and kicks to one of the tall trees surrounding the training grounds. He looks pretty damn bizarre, with a perfectly groomed, weirdly shiny bowlcut, and wearing a green jumpsuit with arms covered in bandages, you're pretty sure if this kid was in your class, you'd remember him. However, he is wearing a Leaf headband around his waist. Is he in the class above you?

You notice that even though his speed is incredibly, he's very quickly tiring himself out, and surely enough, he starts to slow down and eventually is unable to continue, collapsing.

"If I cannot complete this, then it'll be another five hundred squats," He says, as he pushes himself to his feet. You're pretty impressed actually. "And if I cannot complete those, one thousand jump ropes! I promise, I will never let you down, Guy-Sensei!" He says, making a bold proclamation to... no one in particular.

"You're going to hurt yourself, you know." You call out to the weird boy from your place at the entrance to the training fields. He turns suddenly, surprised at your arrival. You start walking towards him, "It's great that you're trying to push yourself and all, but you won't get anywhere by running headfirst into a brick wall over and over. If you can't do something, oftentimes its better to take a break and rest up so you can try again later, or get an alternate perspective on what you need to do."

https://youtu.be/LhTLFoQMwA0

He bows, "Thank you, but I cannot take breaks. I am doing this to save a very dear friend of mine, so I cannot stop, not even for a moment! I must keep pushing myself, as I intend to become the greatest taijutsu specialist of all time! There are two kinds of strong people in this world, you see. There are those who are born with natural talent that are immense and amazing - geniuses, to put it simply. However, there are also people who were never intended to be anything special, who push their bodies, their minds, and their spirits to the brink and then come back stronger and stronger! I am the Beautiful Green Wild Beast of Konoha - Rock Lee!"

Man, you think to yourself. What a weirdo. However, you can't help but cracking a smile. Even though this guy speaks as bizarrely as he dresses, he makes sense, in a way. Growing up, you never thought you would amount to anything special, especially when compared to your peers, many of whom belonged to the Great Clans of Konoha, all with their own style of Kekkei Genkai, something you can never hope to compare to. You didn't train your body physically as hard as Rock Lee, but you've spent basically your entire childhood with your nose in books, studying as much as you possibly can.

You pause for a few moments, "How do you do it?" You ask, causing Rock Lee to raise one freakishly thick eyebrow. "I mean, how are you able to stay so positive in the face of such overwhelming odds? I mean, no matter how hard we train, they'll still have those gifts, won't they?" You think of the battle with Team 7. Sasuke, Hinata, Kiba, hell, even your own teammate, Mariko is naturally gifted. They all have advantages over you, ones that they won't simply lose, and they're all training too. Will you ever be able to surpass any of them?

Lee snaps you out of your thoughts with a slap to the face.

You recoil in shock, staring at him, and he bows his head. "I apologize, but one of the most brilliant men I ever met once told me that we have the power to shape our own destiny. By crying, by giving up, by wanting to back down from our dreams, we only allow our destiny to crumble away into the sands of loss. We must not let our youth fade, we must shine like brilliant shining stars, and although they may shine brighter more naturally, with enough polish and hard work, even the dullest stone can shine brighter than the sun!"

You can't help but smile a little bit, as Rock Lee gives you a wide grin and a thumbs up.

"I guess you're right." You say, rubbing the back of your head.

He nods, and then he pauses. "When I was a child, I was completely unable to use ninjutsu or genjutsu, and there was a time I wanted to quit the Academy, and give up on my dream of becoming a Shinobi. I was known as a talentless loser to my entire class, but I refused to give up, and I trained my taijutsu as much as I could, pushing myself to the brink, until I collapsed every single day. The Geniuses of Konoha may have an advantage, but that doesn't mean they simply win. It just means we have to work harder than them. It may not be fair, but it's the only way. I refuse to give up, I refuse to back down, and I refuse to be surpassed by anyone! I can tell, you're the same way."

You blink, "What?"

He nods, "It's all over your face. You do your best to act cool and collected all the time, don't you? But in reality, you hate the idea of being surpassed by your peers. People like you and I, we were expected to be left in the dust. But that's why we push beyond all of this, because we have to prove them all wrong. The power of youth burns strongly inside you, I can tell." He ponders for a moment, scratching his chin. "Say, what do you think of green? And what size jumpsuit do you wear? Just curious."

You smile and nod, "Uh... I'm good on the jumpsuit thanks. But... thank you, Lee. What you said... really means a lot."

He grins, "Of course! I would do anything for my fellow Shinobi, especially one who is like me. Oh!" He says, suddenly realizing something. "I'm sorry, what is your name?"

You laugh a bit, "Katsuo Tatsukuma." You hold out a hand, and Lee shakes it firmly.

"Well then Katsuo, how would you like to spar?" He asks, a competitive glint in his eyes as he shakes your hand.

You shake your head, "I would enjoy sparring with you, but unfortunately, I have another challenge I must face. Next time we see each other, I promise we can have our sparring match then, alright?"

Lee grins, "It's a promise! You had better make sure you're ready though, because I will not hold back any of my potential, you understand? You will get the full force of the Power of my Youth."

"I wouldn't have it any other way." You reply, as you start to head back to your own training ground. It's late, and you're tired and frustrated. But at the same time, you feel a burst of energy and motivation thanks to that conversation with Lee. You stare up the massively tall tree trunk, and draw your kunai.

"Okay," you mumble to yourself, breathing deeply and drawing a kunai. "I can do this..." You think back to everything Lee said, about pushing yourself, about working harder, about shining brighter than the brightest star... You start running towards the tree.

You can do this.

You have to do this.

> Tree Climbing unlocked!

"Wow."

It's all you can say, as you stand at the top of the tree. Not just because you are absolutely exhausted, but you're also stunned to silence as you look out over the village of Konoha at night. Even at night, you can see countless people going about their days, returning home, running errands, doing whatever it was people did at a time like this.

You could see everything from here, even your own tiny home, tucked into the far side of the village, not too long a walk from Hokage Rock. You can see the hospital, where Mariko and Jun are both recuperating, you can see the library, where you met Ino, Shikamaru and Choji, and you can even look down to the adjacent training ground and see Rock Lee continuing his training.

Sometimes, you don't fully appreciate the Village you grew up in. It has its issues sure, and you don't really think about it too much, but it really is a beautiful place.

You should probably head home soon, but you decide it can't hurt to just enjoy the view a little while longer, so you stay, at the top of the tree for a little while longer.

>End.

And that's a wrap! Thanks everyone for participating, and sorry my activity was even more spotty than usual this thread! If you have any questions, feedback, or whatever, let me know! I'll stick around for a little while. Next thread will start up either tomorrow or Wednesday. I am really enjoying how this is playing out, and I really appreciate you guys for engaging with and seemingly enjoying this quest so far.

Can't wait for Taijutsu training.

Does Naruto still exist or has he been butterflied away?
>>
>>2993831

I don't think we are going to find out for quite some time. If he does exist it's gonna be a big dramatic reveal.
>>
>>2993831
As far as we know the fourth died during the war, which is actually really interesting for our character because now there has never been a hokage that hasn't been from a clan.
>>
>>2993838

Yeah, but depending on the timing Kushina could have been knocked up when he died. It's not impossible for Naruto to exist, it's just implied to be unlikely, which is clearly a device meant to lull us into a false sense of security so that the QM can blindside us later.
>>
>>2993842
I'm more interested in what Danzo's up to now considering his worst nightmare has happened.
>>
>>2993845

Dude's dead or Nuke-Nin at this point I figure.
>>
>>2993828
I've been on the other side enough times to know how much it sucks when the QM flakes. Plus, so far this has been really therapeutic and fun for me, so I really don't have any reason or even the slightest desire to flake.

>>2993831
You've never heard of a Naruto in your life.

>>2993845
>>2993846
Danzo is alive and well, but he is currently retired from his former positions on the council, he quit publicly after Fugaku was named Hokage. He's even raising a few kids of his own!
>>
>>2993858

Just because we've never heard of him doesn't mean he doesn't exist. We don't know everything. You can't fool me QM! You won't lure me into a false since of security! I'm onto you.
>>

>Danzo is alive and well, but he is currently retired from his former positions on the council, he quit publicly after Fugaku was named Hokage. He's even raising a few kids of his own!
Huh, way more seemingly rational than I thought he'd be. Totally thought they'd find an excuse to take him out and force Danzo to go the orochimaru route and desert with his ROOT ninja to start their own group/village. Then again I could see this just Danzo being too important to the village to be killed outright and just kept under heavy surveillance. Odds are he's still got a network or he's just finally given up against Uchiha rule. Just what I think anyway.

I'm still pretty sure mariko is meant to be a femnaruto.
