"This jungle grows thicker every day," Shasta muses to herself as she brushes aside dangling vines with the edge of her sword and steps lightly into the clearing.
>>
Without pause, the great black cat twists at her side its sinewy body past Shasta's shapely legs and dips its fierce muzzle beneath the surface of the clear stream.

"Ah, now there's an idea, Nali!" Shasta remarks. "After our trek, no doubt you're as parched as I am!"

A toss of her long hair sends beads of water glistening in the sparse sunlight to dapple the side of the panther as it continues to lap its own fill from the stream.

In an instant, her sword is snatched up from the ground as her body stands poised to strike, for both her ears and that of the great cat have caught the sound of something approaching!
>>
"Perhaps it was just a bird," she says in a quiet voice as her eyes cast from side to side, but Shasta maintains her steely stance, heavy sword in her hand at the ready while elegant and fair-shaped ears strain to discern the sound of movement. Only the barest waver betrays her as she shifts ever so slightly, for her large limpid eyes have marked at last the source of their concern.

"Easy, Nali," Shasta coos in a soft and pleasing voice. "It's just-" she begins, about to speak '-one leopard', but her words fall to silence as she sees she has miscounted, for at the edge of her vision a second leopard slinks into the clearing from around the corner of a ruined building!

Clever girl!
Go on the offensive, most big cats don't like trading blows or attacking from the front very much. Winning a fight doesn't help much if you get too injured to stalk more prey. Nali can just check the other leopard.

Wordlessly, Shasta gropes for the broken ironwork, a weapon to meet this savage beast, but the bar is too heavy, her grip faltering from exertion and the jounce of the aleatory landing, and she can do nothing but stare with fearful eyes as the leopard takes a step toward her, sensing its time of victory has come.

"Wh-what..." Shasta blurts out, still half-insensate. "What do you mean? Where are we?"

"Where is my sword?" rises the challenge as Shasta gives voice to her anger. "It was near me when you- when that woman struck me with her baton! Answer me!"

In remonstrance comes from the strange uniformed woman's lips, "I said, quiet!"

"When I get out of here, you had better have my sword waiting or I-" Shasta cries, when from the darkness beyond the flickering light of the prison-wagon's torch steps a face both familiar and unwelcome, and acidic hauteur brings a renewed sting to the swollen knot upon her brow as the words carry forth.

>>
"As for this fine sword-" she says, drawing up into the firelight a familiar work of steel.

"My sword!"

"OUR sword, you mean," the woman laughs, and at the sound Shasta plunges her face between the bars and extends her hand to its utmost limit, though strain as she might she cannot reach the source of her bedevilment! >>
"We wouldn't touch such a creature. Panther tastes terrible. But don't worry - it was almost dead when we found you. Something has surely made a meal of it by now."
>>
Fuming with guilt and rage, a cry is drawn to the edge of Shasta's throat, but no farther, for when the girl-prisoner speaks, the simple words constrict the wild woman more than the bars which now vex her. "I told you so. You might as well get used to being a slave."

Wan moonlight spills across a narrow gap, threaded on a wayward path, and Shasta gauges a rough south-southwesterly course to her imperiled travel but fears even her own significant ability to navigate without err may be foiled here, for though these women know the way, the path of flowers has sprung up in their absence completely and totally since last they passed this way, so thoroughly choked is this provisional road with the petals that even now force the great draft horse to further heights of exertion.

Behind her, the adolescent girl stirs, and utters with disparagement, "You might as well sit down. The mine is a long way from here."

"Mine?" questions the woman, for even before her capture had she wandered far from the charted lands and out into the great green wild, where settled knowledge of locales beyond the horizon broached on myth. "What mine?"

Before long, the sullen damsel gives voice yet again. "There's a mine where they take all the slaves."

"What is your name, child?" Shasta entreats, for though unmistakable is the breeding of such a half-feral waif such as she, one raised in the comfortable confinement of mankind's last stronghold is well-heeled in diplomacy.

"Rin," comes the response, but when no further expression is offered, Shasta presses on.

"That's a lovely name, Rin," the blonde warrior-woman asserts. "My name is Shasta. From where do you come?"

Heeded at last and faced not with brutality and barked orders, but the soft delectation of interest, the girl begins to warm imperceptibly, and offers more with but a moment of silence passed between. "My tribe was near where they found you. But everyone has already been taken prisoner. That's where everyone in my tribe was taken. I didn't get caught then, but I didn't know where else to go so I went back to our village."

In quiet contemplation does Shasta ponder these words, and wonders on the unknown industry of this rumored mine, for in these times such practices are nearly unthinkable. So deeply pondered is this strange issue that she is nearly caught unawares when the waif speaks again.exigency

"What tribe are you from?"

"I'm not from any tribe, exactly-" Shasta begins, before a cold feeling alerts her to the exigency of their imprisonment.
>>
Casting a furtive glance past stout bars to the figure bedecked in ancient uniform, Shasta leans closer to the newly-introduced Rin and murmurs, "Given our hosts, it may be unwise to say too much... but if we keep quiet we may be able to converse."

At her back is the barking of the armored woman, demanding a halt to her transgression, but the girl's long and slender legs propel themselves past the threshold to escape this nightmare room! The glimmer of a plan catches interest in the back of her fervently questing mind, for to escape this place, the only place she has ever known, is daunting in scale, and so she flees, not away, but instead to the very chamber adjacent to her own imprisoning dwelling!

"Is it time already? I promise you I shall be gentle!"

The quavering bray of the dotard man registers hardly at all, so strong pounds the blood between the girl's ears. Beyond her, in the hall, she knows without err or pause that she must face pursuit or be trapped once more!

The armored woman's approach on the smooth tiled floor is thundrous, but so is the pounding of the blood which courses through the girl's body, and she feels renewed vigor as she drops low as the woman steps within striking range, catching the other unaware-

Just as the girl's form is eminently suited for one single act, so is the other's, and forth does she spring even as the sound of her tremendous impact rolls about the room! Quicker still is the girl's hand, electric card ready at last for the finale of her trick, and a small blossom of teasing does she allow to creep to her lips as she watches the eyes of the other widen in surprise, then outrage as the sturdy door closes between the two, sealing her unaccompanied in the silent hallway!
>>
Between the slight click of the door locking and her next breath is but an instant, though she would be hard-suited to recall the exact breadth of duration, for at once does the energy which flooded her now recede as a glass pitcher shattered, and so mightily does it drain away her vital essence that she collapses against the smooth wall, eyes reeling with the dizzying force of her trial as at the far end of the hall other jailers waver near the fringe of her swimming vision!

The chatter of the four women is unabated as they round the corner, though before them march a pair of armor-clad figures, who storm through the crowd, forcing them to either side of the white hall!

"Where are THEY going in such a hurry?"

"Maybe it has something to do with the algae processor."

Desperately does the beautiful girl slink through the brightly-lit passages of this strange place, for the moment somehow unseen through luck or providence, though the thought of either's aid springs closer to the surface of her heart than she would readily admit! At last she finds herself at the doorway to promised safety, yet the signalling button clicks dully under graceful fingertip as she taps it again and again, growing ever more frantic as each moment spins out!
>>
At last the door clicks and disappears, and the smiling face beyond the portal is quickly reduced to shock at the sight before it!

The young woman Sixteen is roughly grasped and clutched tightly for a moment before the heaving girl lurches and drags them both back from the hallway with a rasping plea. "Shut the door, quickly!"

In silence she dwells, held within the black womb of her own unconscious mind, dreaming and yet not, aware of her unawareness, knowing her fear but not fearing, for such things are intangible in the place where she resides.

Then, a stirring of one lovely limb, a twitch lifting the placid expression upon graceful chin, and a sigh. For one second, peace is upon her, this girl for who life has been an unending regiment, led down a path which grew narrower each day until-

For a moment she pauses in confusion, for wholly unfamiliar are her surroundings, and a strange sense of fear drops upon her, for never before in her life has her waking not triggered the flickering of automatic light above her head. To the sheer synthetic tunic of the man Nine does she press one delicately-formed ear, and only after two moments pass does she allow herself a breath, and a choked sob, for her endeavor was not passed in vain.

"He lives! Oh, but the heartbeat is faint-"

The girl's fearful joy is lashed and driven far from hand even as she longs to press her brow to Nine's broad chest, for escaping the mouth of the tunnel from which she sprang but a moment ago echo the distant sounds of others, with heavy voices and heavy boots.

"It came from down this way."

All the walls in the main part of the Arcology are 21 plates high with either a tile on top or are the flat sides of pieces (like the tiled wall sections). I've had this lightbox since I was a kid (I built one myself using a lightbulb socket, a chunk of styrofoam, and a small pane of plexiglass, but I think my mom probably saw the potential hazard in that so she got me a nicer one) and use it for lots of things to this day, but in this case I flip it upside down and it rests flush against the top of the walls. I think it works perfectly for the Arcology interior.

I have to go run to town and then stain my fence before it snows again, but I will be back later today and we can play some more!

"Willkommen im Sicherheitsunterkunft, Bewohnerin. Bitte treten Sie vor."

The words seem to form in the very air, and Rin, a child of savages and superstition, feels shrunken in its mysterious presence. "Who said that?" pleads she.

"Bitte treten Sie vor."

"I don't understand what you're saying!" the girl cries, for the words, though strange, are given in a tone for which no vacillation will be suffered.

"Übersetzen. Please step forward."

"Are- are you talking to me?"

"Please step forward."
>>
Panic's cold embrace begins to circle the girl as she grows ever-more certain that this is some terrible breach into the world of spirits into which she has inadvertently stumbled. "Where are you? I can't see you."

Yet again, the answer given is maddeningly nebulous, despite being drawn in a tongue which reflects her own. "Please step forward. I am the autonomous control system."
>>
Seeing no recourse to the brusque phantom's demanding words, Rin takes a slow step into the hall, then a second, for still in trepidation does she pass and softly do her feet tread here, sure with each footfall that some cursed ruin will befall her in this land beyond death. "Where are you? I can hear your voice, but I can't see you!"

"There is a speaker grille located four meters from your location."

"What is this place?"

"Willkommen im Sicherheitsunterkunft, Bewohnerin. Bitte treten Sie vor."

Perhaps the girl Rin is ignorant of such things as machines, yet upon hearing this ethereal voice's strange greeting a second time, her own continuance draws her attention to the elusive portal from whence she so recently stepped, and there finds mangled and bent yet still full of awful vitality a lone mutant weed, tenacious bloodlust of its malformed lineage evident in its presence!

For such a thing as this mangled mutant, the workings of this place are of no consequence, so focused is it on the promise of meat at hand, penned in on a narrow path, and so the twisted thing bends to leap a dozen paces in a single bound, to rend the flesh and bone from the back of the soft fleeing thing, and so blameless are both the unknown workings of nature and the unseen makers of this strange world of bodiless ghosts when the slight weight of the knotted menace fails to inform itself of the weed's presence and the crushing pressure exhibited the next instant.

Like an acorn filled with jelly the thing fractures and crunches, spilling out upon the stone-like floor its viridian innards, and at once does cease the maddening chattering of its esurient beak!

"Why did you scream, Citizen?"

"I wish Shasta was here!" spouts the adolescent, the swells of panic and elation pressing her to the brink of tears.

"There is no record of a citizen by that name," speaks the voice which casts itself about the air surrounding her, but as the first tear slips across her youthful cheek, a hope begins to stir that she may yet survive this nightmare realm, for the voice speaks a promise couched in the strange patois of which she unfamiliarly attempts to comply. "To locate that citizen directly, please proceed down the corridor to your left and continue to the central control station."

"Were the staff members unable to help you?" voices the ghost.

"Shasta! That's her!" squeals the girl with tears of excitement. "Please, let her out!"

"That is a pictorial representation, not an actual citizen," chides the voice, and though the words are unfamiliar in the extreme, so has Rin begun to comprehend the parlance of this strange place, and knows that the phantom refers to the visage of Shasta as an incorporeal shade, and wails anew!

"Oh, Shasta," cries she, "You're dead, and trapped in this, and I can't- I can't-"

From her lips rise a staccato of choking sobs as fists pound against the sturdy glass, while behind and beyond mutely stalks the grim form of the warrior-woman, aglow in a spectral gleaming as lighting wrought to the most cunning of effigy, and long would be the leaving of her newfound post as she clings to the icon of the dead Shasta, but for the voice of nothingness drawing her to the edge of her misery.
>>
"That citizen is not inside the viewing screen," states the unseen voice, and in her confusion Rin tosses her head as if to lock eyes with the specter, for she can ask only one thing.

"W-where is she?"

"That citizen is approximately one hundred and fifteen meters above you."

"Above... me?" stutters Rin, for her notions of the hereafter are half-formed and the plight of her current stress has cast afield what little belief she had clung to before this moment. "Can she- can Shasta come here?"

"Would you like to allow that citizen to enter this level?" The question seems almost absurd, for in her brief time here the maiden has seemingly gone from sacrifice to ruler, and she finds the words as a pile of stones on her tongue, which she dislodges with a stuttering command.

"A-allow? Allow- allow Shasta? Y-yes! Yes! A-allow her!"

"Please return to the portcullis," the voice implores in its flat inflection, and though the girl knows not the word, the intent is clear and bright as the image on the glass.

Barely a hint of shadow falls upon the doorway when keen senses detect the presence, and Shasta turns from her work to face the returning girl.

"I take you didn't find anything interesting..."

"RIN!"

Shasta's cry echoes down the still hallway, joined by nothing else, and muscles sing for pursuit-

-but crouched as she is to launch into sprint, in an instant the woman throws out one foot to halt her chase, for with a suddenness that catches even her by surprise, the world is plunged into complete and utter blackness!

A moment later, the ceiling erupts again in light, and Shasta casts her gaze upward, toward the speaker grill affixed at the height of the corridor's far wall. "What's happening? What was that?"

There is a pause longer than any they have heard their ghostly host exhibit until now, but just as Shasta turns to follow the fleeing form does it speak again, at first in its garbled tongue but then soon in words that convey a terrible understanding.

"Achtung. Kritischer Stromausfall. Analysis indicates activation of sterilization protocol has caused emergency power systems to fail."

Ever practical, Shasta's mouth opens to learn how much longer their light will hold when perfect face is marred by shock as the shriek of the wounded great cat resounds through the hall at her back!

At the sound of the panther's scream, Shasta's heel spins upon the stone floor as she leaps forward, covering a score of paces!

"Nali!"
>>
Hearing nothing and fearing the worst, she rounds the final turn to the hallway in which is contained that portcullis from which they may escape this place, yet, even as she does she slows, for no nightmare this, but in its stead Nali stands atop the beheaded corpse of a strange figure, casually licking blood from one great paw.
>>
"There goes any hope of a peaceful encounter," Shasta muses sardonically as she stoops to draw up the wayward head, though her bitter grin turns to stark terror as she forces her recalcitrant mind to fathom that which is held before it!
>>
The mouth, the jaw, all are normal enough, though dirty and caked with blood and ichor, yet above them lie not two eyes, but instead a smooth expanse of flesh stretched taut over bone!

A scream rises in her perfect throat and is snuffed out just as promptly, for again is she plunged into oceanic depth, absolutely void of light!

This time the blackness encompasses her twice as long, thrice, and as she hesitantly reaches out fingertips behind her, again are her long eyelashes drawn close to withstand the flood of light that fills the hallway.

"Achtung. Kritischer Stromausfall." The ghostly voice of this place sounds again, and for a moment the corridor is silent before Shasta's small and delicately-shaped ears catch a shuffling, clattering noise she would never ascribe to the adolescent Rin!

Tossing the freakish head to the floor, Shasta turns and sprints from the portcullis, bidding as she does so the panther to follow. "Nali, come!"

At her heels bounds the great beast, leaping agilely over the truncated corpse to join her as they race through the corridor.

Instinctively, Nali takes the lead, muzzle held up toward the glowing ceiling. "Yes, friend, your nose and ears may be of use where mine cannot if the lights should fail again," she murmurs, placing one slim hand upon its coat of velvet.

Faith in quantity does she place in the panther's ability to discern their attacker in the dark, yet even as the two stalk the empty hallways does a gnawing sensation stir in the back of her mind, as superbly keen senses refuse to let her pass with ease!

Nali's form outpaces her own, as Shasta's footfalls slow to a lingering halt as a twitch of frown crosses her comely face while eyes gaze unfocused at the floor, straining to descry that which vexes her!

Quickly, Shasta pivots and throws herself forward, surpassing three steps with each mighty bound, and as she flees she calls the name of the girl who discovered this faltering stronghold!

"Rin! Rin!"
>>
Calloused but nimble feet skid and leap 'round corners, as as she calls ever more stridently Rin's name a cloying panic descends upon her, for Nali is unseen as well!
>>
"What's the matter?" asks the maiden as Shasta clears one final turn, girl stepping from a portal to some room of ancient and spartan curiosity as woman sees that again does Nali's receptive snout lead the panther unerringly to its quarry!

Drawn from some ancient storehouse, a pair of the blind monstrosities unfurl a net, synthetic-spun and stronger than hemp, which entwines seemingly on its own about the great cat, ensnaring it with no protest save an indignant and hateful shriek!
>>
"-Nali!"

The cry comes too late, and as Shasta finds herself outnumbered and nearly overcome by the pressing mass of misshapen humanoids, the air at her back is suddenly pierced by a shrill and urgent scream!
