You do not remember what brought here; it's all a musk.... a blurry of veiled memories. You find yourself clutching to a black arrow tip, it stares at your very soul, crackling with maddening laughter.

Your essence is shackled. The air is seething with black mist, the realm shifts and stirs and yet you remain immobile. The arrow tip is gone, in front of you lies a myriad of frozen screams and mystifying dark bones of yore shrouded by a bottomless fabric. Two eyes pierce your soul, agony, loss and dismay bubbles inside these orb.

Then silence.

"Pardon my Visage, Mortal." A booming voice flayed your skin, shattered your bones and reduced you to an implacable pile of red mesh. You continue to exist regardless, the rules of nature do not apply here it seems

A throne of lost and damned souls rises from the twisted ground. The unfathomable figure shifts in form into a vile woman. There is nothing human about her, nothing at all.

"Are my bosoms and ill clad garments to your liking? I find it laughable really...oh."

Within moments, Your broken husk is restored to its former image. You open your mouth, words clinging to your tongue unable to escape...

"Well? I have you know that I, Lady Death , am a very busy woman. How did you get your hand on my token of spite?"

"I..i-i.." Memories slowly coming back to your time of death...

"Now," She claps once, her attire morphs to something more modest as a divine gesture of respect "You have a single question to ask, Old man. Consider it as a prize before our more serious task ahead, choose them wisely."

Lady death seemed to be surprised; she didn't expect you to refuse an offer many would kill for. You find yourself at the end of a pulsating table made from withering corpses, its legs has oozing eyes and tiny teeth that occasionally scrap your bare leg.

Her grace is on the other side "I presume you are aware of my tokens of spite and their vital role in my eternal life?"

"It remains a mystery in the mortal world, the order of the scathing sun believes it is an act of indiscriminate malevolence... to be a thorn in your Lord brother's side. Personally, I keep a wide berth from these zealots. I am certain you have your reasons."

"Wellll..." the luxurious food on her plate immediately rots upon the simplest of touches. She sighs "There is very little to do here. Everything gets mundane after the umpteenth time, you mortals are so unpredictable with your frailty."

The scenery shifts once more, You share a hammock with the divine of death and disease. An invisible barrier protects your for her decaying touch. The sun bleed from the above, the lands ahead are drunk with blight "I could send you to the darkest pit in my domain but i find it more amusing for you to be a pawn for the sake of my entertain. True, true, It is a cruel fate... yet nothing is more cruel than my existence , oh scholar of hox and pox."

Finally, you find yourself next to the throne, endless rows of blackened souls kneeling before her "It is your choice, go for an adventure and please me...or join the masses. I hate to see your talent wasted like so. Your freedom is your reward when i had my fill."

" I find older men more appealing to my watchful eyes. Now go and break my monotony.."

A shadowy hand drags you slowly to the unknown depths below....
________

The land of the golden shimmers is home to a myriads of ancient trees. Some are holy, others are wicked and serve as a banishment site. The tree of the sunken sun however is unique; a single magical fruit, drenched in the blood of a thousand battle shall grant immortality to one person only.

"The viper stings, the hound growls
All blind to what it brings
The tree of the sunken sun
By steel and blood, This folly shall be undone."

Galathim the bard bows to his meager audience, mainly you , his dog Rex and another elven merchant named Aliese. You traveled with the dyad for weeks. It was a pleasant company with minor inconveniences . Both the halfling and the elf went on their separate ways wishing you the best in your endeavor.

The path to the tree itself (and the ongoing battlefield) should be west of here through Gullum passage . You chose your next destination.

Ideally, we turn everyone we come across to allies, but being that lucky is somewhat unlikely.

Dryads are the heralds of Loyekvu , The divine of nature and purity. They are often born from the hearts of ancient trees. Dryads are considered by many to be guardians of nature and all that is beautiful.

You render a simple illusion under your feet, fresh green grass, its fake smell lures the dryad towards you. In an instant, a portion of her past self surfaces.

"Such comfort...we are aware of this Illusion. The soil will never heal. we shall never escape this nightmare, bound to the curse of the twisted divine...Leave us, we wish you no harm."

The dryad personally guides you outside of the tree's domain, her more corrupted sisters failed to perceive you at all.

You stand next to a small pagan shrine, a small wooden ring has found its way to your forefinger.

"Yer onna of Viper's hired spies, aren'tya you old weasel?"

As you were readying your spellbook for combat , a crackling voice bellowed behind you. "Urchins..."

A peculiar knight in donning a decrepit armour with a giant broken greatsword resting on his broad shoulder. A shimmering cape is almost visible as it constantly fades in and out of existence. His plume is of similar nature, He revealed his face, it was devoid of skin and flesh...only ancient magical markings of a bygone era.

The fellow bandits were shaken by the undead menace, their leader steeled their resolve. "I-it can be slayed! Meyaor, Toss me the holy blade! Come on Lads!"

Because there's no chance in hell that they're interested in hearing us out and were probably planning on killing us anyway even if we paid them.

A skirmish

The beautiful scenery of the coastal blue was ruined by the ongoing skirmish downhill. Soldiers from each side fighting over a simple hamlet, its residents cowering inside a lone red tower waiting for the victor like a shivering little lamb.

The hound's men were numerous with varying degrees of armaments, anything salvaged and scavenged from previous battlefields. Their rabid leader fought alongside a hellish hound barking fire and death. The Viper's men compensated their lack of proper numbers with better gear and vastly superior tactics. Their leader relied on elemental magic in the battlefield.

The hound's men emerged victorious from the conflict with the viper stripped of her clothes for the unholy hound to defile her. The men reveled in this act of cruelty to her last gurgle. Her corpse was left in the open to rot alongside her men. No one was spared.

The beast master left with some of his men to pillage the hamlet, they ignored the red tower. At the very least, innocent lives remained intact.
The rest of the soldiers remained in the blood soaked battlefield pilfering the fallen and enjoying their new gear. You escaped their the scene under the shadow of trees lest you would be their next victim.

Opportunistic Goblin

You rested a couple of days in a distant mining town, the air was saturated with dust from constant excavations. As you were about to leave, a short figure tugged your robe gently.

An ugly goblin with a giant sack (that should break his back) showed his rows of yellow, sickly teeth whilst talking "Geeetingsss humann, you look like the wandering sort. The heavy pocketed kind of wanderersss....care to check my wares? I got baubles and other odds, I'll blind you with my pricessss."

Your ring twirls around your finger as the goblin unloads his load on an exotic rag.

Can we warn him ahead of time that we will be dispelling any illusions in order to avoid getting scammed (explaining that we do not place any blame on him if it does turn out that some part of his wares do turn out to be illusory; he may have simply gotten conned in turn by someone else), and ask him to show us his entire stock in series?

CRITICAL FAILURE
The illusion, whatever it may be. retained its deceiving form. The goblin was eyeing you this whole time without breaking a sweat. Luck was on his side; he had a bountiful sale this day.

You attempted to get on his greedy side when it was nighttime by asking him to check on your ring, he gladly accepted your offer.
"Perhaps thiss human sshould not meddle with Mogaril Badodad."
In an instant, he reduced the ring to mere naught by pouring an orange vial on it. When you were about to blast his slimy little head, he drops a smoke grenade beneath your feet, slipping away during the confusion.

Your purse feels lighter....

You lost the ring of dreams

Jubilant Witch

As per the shambling knight's instructions, you found a lustful forest untouched by war... not yet at least. You required further guidance by the local villagers, they say the viper and the hound respects some of the pagan figures worshiped in these parts. You found the witch's hut overseeing the forest on top of a hill.

Ancient totems decorated her garden of magical mushrooms, you knocked on the moss riddled door. It slowly creaks open revealing a fair young chubby woman next to a giant iron pot, ingredients flying about.

"Come in dearie, oh mmmmm ohohho~" Whether this was an illusion or not, you didn't know.

"I have been cursed. I was told you can help me by a skeletal knight."

The witch barely contains her smile, her large breasts giggling in the process "Oh hohoho! What a fool, what a fool. A faithful knight reduced to a simple tool! Now spent and discarded, A pity, A pity. You too are cursed by no other than the not so pretty divine of death."

The magical brew bubbling in the pot twirled in the air before settling in multiple vials "You wish to escape this itty gritty curse? That i can, a blessing for a curse....or perhaps you wish to aid the witch of evergreen? My nephew remains unseen, bohohohooo~"

Forgotten ruins

You spent the last couple of weeks with another scholar in a peaceful village in the crossroads. You helped her to decipher an ancient elven transcript ignoring the sudden urges (instilled by lady death) to strangle the woman in her sleep.

Alas, you two had found the location of an ancient temple dedicated to the first elf who attempted to reach divinity. The land beneath it had caved in ages ago, the birth of a new forest above did not make it easier. Your academic thirst for knowledge was satiated, however, a lingering mystery among the ruins puzzled you.

A trail of skeletons has led you to what seemed to be an altar room, various elven statues of marble and obsidian points towards a pristine mirror at the end.

"Wait!" The woman stopped you, a warding spell was written at the entrance, It spoke of 'those who are worthy shall enter the child-sky, Unyielding to the true divine, he who shall save us from the cruelty of the stars''.

Blood of the Skraaleig
These lands became more and more familar the more you tread it. This tally is not well regarded in the eyes of the devourer herself and yet it is a must; dashing towards your goal recklessly will surely cause your demise.

An upcoming battlion of the hound's men forced you to slip into an old path claimed by burnt trees and ashes. This portion of the forest was lost to magical fire, you could sense it. As you were returning to the main path, you stepped on something a tad slippery...

Blood.

You followed its trail, it lead you to a blonde woman mired with mud and her every own blood. A warrior that one from the frigid lands of Skraaleig . She drags herself towards a half burnt shrine, one that belonged to the divine of red fury and war.

Her pale face meets yours, pleading for aid.

The undead are one matter, but the living deserve the right to cling to life for as long as they can. We have no right to claim this one for her Grace just yet.

Are we perhaps learned enough that we can perform some minor treatment of the warrior's wounds, to reduce the likelihood that she bleeds out on the way?

Your youthful spirit emerges once more, you carry the woman as fast as you could to a nearby village. These simple folks responded to your call, countless women swarm the bleeding foreigner applying their salves and their what not on her wounds.

"The bae's poisoned." One of the wise women exclaimed "Two stabs they are. Pretty nasty...i say a couple of days then she'll spring like a horse."

A few days has passed, the nameless woman had finally woke up. Her hair had started to turn grey, afterall, she was almost treading the land of the dead.

"So you're the one who hauled me all the way back here? Impressive, Old man. I got little to offer but my amulet, She has been with me since i was a little lass, the last thing i have of my Da before..."
You could see the desperation in her eyes, she literally had nothing on her but her axe and shield.

Befuddled
You started to travel with the young but fierce Skraaleig following the mischievous trail of the greenskin. Apparently, he wronged a lot of folks...those who tried to uncover his ploy were dealt with.

The woman talked little during these short weeks, her mind was focused on the road. The sight of lush and green was gradually replaced with more barren and bleak landscapes.

the sun continued to scorch the land till it crackled and went dry, you await the gentle grace of the moon but it didn't soothe the skies ever since. At some point, you considered the fact that you might be lost.

Tired and exhausted, you sought shelter in an abandoned village, claimed by sands and other desert critters. A single colourful stand awaited you and your companion gleefully with a smug drow almost mocking you with her gloat. She had various item on sale in the middle of nowhere.

"Lost are we?" She drank her cup of cold water stirring the ice to draw your ire "Everyone is, the Spider queen has cursed this desert when humans slew the last of her daughters. You can try your luck braving the sand. I will simply follow your trail and strip your corpse clean."

"We are no weaklings , knife ear." The last shield protested, almost drawing her axe.

"Of course, a crumbling old man and a woman from the north. " she stop taunting "I digress, the reason why i am enduring the nightless skies is to provide my valuable services for an item of my choosing. It is not a horrible bargain, i get rich and you remain alive..."

Gunhild was sick of her little games. Out of respect for you, she was holding both her axe and tongue.

You attempted to intimidate the drow with your companion who was more than happy to play along. The dark elf gawked at you before bursting into laughter "Good one but you will have to try harder! "

She pointed at her facial scars and showed you the markings of a thick collar at the based of her neck "I had my share of slavers to know how to deal with two nobodies like you two. My patience runs thin."

Wanting to see what the other anon says, but I say we buy the Eye of Malice and offer one of our weapons to trade for the Armor of Inspiration, but I'm not sure which we'd rather keep.
>>
>>2997415
Before committing to buying anything, I'd like to know: what 'Heavy' means mechanically; what our current tome is, if any, and what we lose by replacing it; and whether we can equip our items onto our companions.

>>2997428
Probably keep the halberd and trade the holy blade if anything, since we're more or less to go up against the Viper's men at some point, while the likelihood of fighting against more undead is less certain.

Do you intend to hire the elf's services in leaving the desert?
>>
>>2997450
Maybe? I definitely want some armor though.
>>
>>2997450
HEAVY MEANS THAT IT WILL AFFECT CERTAIN ENCOUNTERS WITH FINESSE/ENDURANCE LIKE FOR AN EXAMPLE CARRYING GUNHILD ALL THE WAY TO THE VILLAGE.

OUR CURRENT TOME PROVIDES NON ELEMENTAL ARCANE BLASTS+ SHIELDING+ ILLUSION
>>
>>2997460
Fair enough. Judging from >>2997463, it'd be immediately disadvantageous to leaving the desert, but I assume we can just opt not to equip it now.

Of course, then we'll no longer have any items we're willing to part with to purchase her services, to speak nothing of letting her get one of her choice. Which means we'll have to brave the desert without her.

I'm fine with this course of action, but I want to make sure you're aware of the decision here before committing.
>>
>>2997450
TO AVOID EASY MODE, COMPANIONS CANT EQUIP ANYTHING , THEY CANT GAIN BLESSINGS OR CURSE UNLESS IT IS RELATED TO THEIR STORYLINE.
YOU CAN HAVE MORE THAN ONE COMPANION, IT CAN GET BROKEN REALLY FAST
>>
>>2997481
Are you keen on taking her offer?
>>
>>2997500
The offer of giving her an item in exchange for her services as a guide? No.

If I trusted her not to lead us into a trap, which I don't, I still wouldn't be keen on letting her have her pick of our equipment. Gold would be fine, but equipment seems unique in this system; if we lose it, we may not be able to get it back.

Getting her to tell us about Mogaril would be nice, but I'm not sure if we can achieve that with the amount of gold we have.

>>

Then I saw we trade/buy some stuff. Anything that catches your eye?
The armor, the ring and big tome are the only things that interest me.
>>
>>2997529
Tome of Vulcanus seems broken as currently worded, since every combat where you use its contained fire spells (which would presumably be every combat) is a combat involving fire; therefore, it effectively provides a +20 bonus to every combat where you can cast spells.

I'm not sure OP intended it to be or will permit it to be used that way, though.

Eye of Malice seems alright. If it revealed which choices in encounters give curses, it'd be a snap pick, but just flat-out avoiding encounters with 'possible curses' seems a viable strategy with our limited supply. I'm not keen on the opportunity cost of losing our ring slot, but it might be worth it.

Armor of Inspiration seems good, but not vital. Not sure how they'll fare against the Viper and Hound themselves, which are the fights we need bear in mind specifically when gearing up. It'll get far better if we choose to play with the specific intent of gaining allies.

Tome of Arkaani might be good for gaining allies - it would have made things much easier in retrospect with Gunhild - but is probably not worth trading for.

Sword of uncertainty is probably trash.
>>
>>2997556
+20 BONUS APPLIES ONLY IF THE OTHER SIDE IS SWIRLING ANY SORT OF FIRE AT US.
I SHOULD HAVE WORDED IT BETTER THO
>>
>>2997529
>>2997556
>>2997559
Yeah, in that case it probably isn't worth going out of our way to pick up. Admittedly, it basically guarantees us a win against the Hound's hellhound, but there's probably other ways to get around that fight.
>>
>>2997525
If the other anon still plans to go ahead with >>2997428, I'll back it to move things ahead. Weapon to trade should be the Holy Blade.

Any chance we can talk the elf into spilling info on the Mogaril as a freebie with our purchases?

Nowhere's Inn

After trudging through a harrowing storm, you found your way into a small inn in the middle of nowhere. It's name was to the point; no one tempted to tame these hideous swamps.

Soaked and wet, you and your companion seek warmth near the fireplace. All manner of races are enjoying themselves with jubilant music, delightful wenches and hearty ales.
The night is soon to come to an end. You make the best out it. The innkeeper eyes you silently, expecting you to buy something.

You wasted one of your last coins on a surprisingly huge tankard. No wonder half of his patrons can't distinguish their hands from their feet. Before you could take a sip, Gunhild whisked it away "I'll take that, heavens above, Its neh our brew but it'll do."

You lost 1 coin!

She gulped the whole thing in one go earning the cheers of some around. She left you to sit with a half drunken dwarf who called her over.

"She's a feisty one, give'r a beard, stock'er down a tad and she'll be some good wife material! I...'pologies, i got carried away. 'ere, quench that thirst for prime dwarven ale haahaha!" The innkeeper poured you another one.

A couple of gulps later, you found yourself talking about the drow in the desert. A couple of drunkards enjoyed this tale "Yer a lucky bastard, gramps. That knife eared piece of shite has a pet mimic . It ate Dorian, me cousin! Oooh, what'll do and pay for her head!"

Nowhere's Inn is now a repeatable encounter
The drow will be found in another encounter

The innkeeper slammed his burly hands on the table. Once he cooled down, you asked him about the goblin "I...there's many customers about. I can't tell them apart. You have better chances with these louts, i say...

1 of 3 clues found about the elusive goblin

"Ah! I 'member that fella. Couple o' months ago, he wanted me to distill something for him. He paid me a hefty sum for it too. Dragon blood , i knew it from the smell. He's brewin' something awful with it i tell you. "

You found a couple of men watching your conversation " Deserters, the hound's bleedin dry. I don't mind them as long as they pay." A couple of travelers had arrived, the innkeeper politely left you to serve them. 10 coins for a room is reasonable, you learned. You wished you had a heftier purse.

With a hint of concern, you looked for your companion. She is guzzling more and more ale in a drinking contest against the dwarf, both are blushing red and staring mad at each other.

"Is she your daughter, old timer?" the bard asked leaning against the wall. he wore a fashionable attire, with his suave voice, he was irresistible to the ladies.

You shook your head finishing the last of your ale "A friend."

"I see, My eyes are set. This night, she'll lie within my manly embrace. How about a little bit of coin? or do you want me to sing your name instead?"

"Then stay out of my way." He shoved you aside remasking his brief anger before approaching the skraaleig. His attempt to snake his arm around her drunken waist earned him a powerful bash that broken his nose before uttering a single word. The bard was knocked out on the floor amidst more cheers from the drunken patrons. He took off to some room upstairs mumbling and cursing under his breath.

As time passed by, the inn was getting quieter. The drunken contest rages on with apparent victor, some serious bets were forming on both sides. You pointed your attention elsewhere to the rather silent patrons enjoying their meal at relative peace.
