Long has it been since the fall of mankind, with scant remnants forced to scavenge upon the verdant surface or cower within pitiful holes of machinery, save for one woman, chemically-enhanced, rebel of the cloistered Arcology, freedom-lover, warrior-woman, the one called Shasta!
Attacked while in attendance to the grevious wounds of her loyal panther Nali, Shasta found herself waylaid and bound, to awaken in a prison-carriage bound for a strange mine - stranger still, for in this overgrown world such endeavors are hardly possible!
With cunning unbound by rope or pole, escape was soon had, and Shasta tasted once more the air of freedom, alongside the jungle waif Rin, for the girl was the last of her tribe, now wholly kept in forcible labor to the slavers of the mine!
Yet freedom is fleeting in this most hostile of worlds, and Shasta had yet to turn before she found herself menaced by a monstrous inhabitant of the endless jungle! No sessile presence, this, but a terrifyingly intelligent behemoth, it threatened ingurgitation to both woman and girl!
As Shasta gleefully embroiled herself in the hot rush of battle, other freakish denizens made their presence known, seeking to make a meal of the adolescent girl! Panic drove the girl deeper into the jungle, where surrounded by chittering horrors she inadvertently came upon a fantastic discovery!
Beneath their very feet lay a counterpart to Shasta's own home in this far country, yet from the first they found it strangely deserted of the living.
No shortage, however, did they find of the dead, victims of some terrible plague, for as they passed from corridor to corridor no trace of life could be found in the sterile catacombs.
No sooner did the three separate that the stillness of the crypt-city was broken, for as the interlopers soon learned, something had survived the plague.
"Aaah! Help!"Rin backs against the doorway, kicking and cringing as a blind scuttling dwarf with half a cranium bulging from the crooked hunch weighting down one shoulder like a hillock of pale and veiny flesh rakes its talons and snaps broken, jagged teeth, tossing acrid spittle from its blood-caked mouth! "Blut! Ich will dieses süße, leckere Blut!"Across the paneled corridor, Nali writhes and shrieks, her claws unable to tear free of the synthetic-spun netting which binds her ever-more tightly with each straining sinew's twist!>Send Rin on her own to get a weapon and guard her retreat>Throw Rin your sword and fight bare-handed>Cut Nali free of the net>Something elseRoll a d12 and link to this post for whatever you do, please! "Nali!" cries Shasta as she surges forward, blade gleaming in the pallid artificial light of this place. "You will be free!"
But as she makes to slice loose the binding cords, thunder shakes the corridor to her side as a giant four-armed freak presses its bulk into view, wielding a grisly club made from a length of pipe topped with a human skull!
From the far length of the hallway comes a cry as another blind thing like a half-melted man endures screams and kicks from Rin as it grips the maiden tightly and scuttles to escape with its terrified prize into the winding passages!
But reach the girl Shasta cannot, encircled as she is by shrieking, barking blind things that revel dizzyingly about the fringe of the room while the six-limbed giant roars and brings its huge club down upon her!"Blut! "Blut! -Shasta drops her body low and arches her body from toe-tip to scalp, nimble as a dancer, beneath the path of her expected demise, and the confused gnarled thing above her has little choice but to continue behind the force of its tremendous ground-shattering blow!
Before the monstrous figure can comprehend its own demise, keenly-honed metal bisects it utterly as Shasta flips her perfect torso in a leaping spin, sending the giant tumbling to the ground in twain!
The other malformed half-humans, dismayed at the felling of their totemic leader, find themselves no match for Shasta's sword-
-for quicker than they can counter or even begin to flee, she is among them, cutting them down without pause or err!
"Nali!"Kneel she does, even as the torso of the last blind and malformed thing still holds airborne, and her keen blade is out! But such workings as spun by this net's maker-machines are impermeable, unalterable to metal as that of the sword of Shasta."Don't worry, I'll soon have you free-"

"Rin! Oh, why won't this-"At last catches the blade of her great sword upon the engineered fibers of the netting, and she feels it loosen around the panther even as the beast shrugs free of its confinement!
"Go, Nali!" coaches the woman as she keeps pace with the great cat as it surges through the corridors. "Follow Rin!"

Desperate to save the girl from an unknown fate, yet not yet foolhardy enough to charge blindly down darkened passageways, Shasta retreats to the last chamber passed along Nali's frenzied chase. There, in some manner of technical control room staffed by a worker whose loyalty carried to the grave, she throws open drawer after drawer searching for something to light her way.
At last, she pulls from the final drawer an ancient and corroded electric torch, its activation switch clicking dully beneath her frantic pressing yet yielding nothing from the glass-cased end. Fear of what may lie waiting in the dark gives her a moment's pause-
-before the clever warrior-woman realizes there is yet one thing in the room that may serve to illuminate the waiting dark.
"Come, Nali," Shasta intones in a voice barely a whisper, as the strips of synthetic uniform crackly briskly above her head. "I will lead the way."And so down into the darkness they travel, and down indeed, for by Shasta's keen reckoning of such things, their path dips and slopes farther and farther down in an arthritic spiral, until she is certain that they must soon hit bedrock.
There is a point at last when the darkness somehow gives way, parting to reveal an even more incredible immersion of endless night, an overwhelmingly oppressive blackness, a void which through anyone who dares breach must drift, for the ground is so black as to be unreal, and Shasta's inerrable senses know that they now stand at the crack of some giant canyon nestled beneath a hundred billion tons of stone."By science-"
The words thunder in the center of her head, behind her beautiful limpid eyes and between her ears, and though the gargantuan, bloated cranium that seems to float in the darkness ahead of her, ringed with courtiers of the same degenerate breed encountered on the far side of this endless darkness vocalizes in garbled, choking gasps that same strange language, Shasta feels the thing digging fingers through her brain, forcing her to comprehend its bizarre words!"Du bist derjenige, der so viel Ärger verursacht hat."You're the one who caused so much trouble.
As she draws closer, lured by the mewling form which flickers in the torchlight from a wrought metal cage high above the cult, she sees the immense head does not truly float, but is supported somehow by the puny frame of a withered and armless form of twisted though no doubt human descent!"And you're the one who took that girl. Give her back to us, and we will leave your home.""Du verstehst nicht, Frau von der Oberfläche. Das Mädchen wurde hierher gebracht, um dich hierher zu bringen."You do not understand, woman from the surface. The girl was brought here to bring you here."Bring me here? What do you want with me, besides my sword through your corpulent skull?" taunts Shasta as she grips her sword tightly and turns the blade outward to follow her words."Du hast viel Vitalität. Sie werden uns gut dienen."You have a lot of vitality. You will serve us well."I serve no one! Much less a disgusting mass like you-"
"Als die Ärzte die Seuche nicht heilen konnten, versuchten sie etwas anderes. Sie haben sich selbst verändert. Aber jetzt sind unsere Frauen weg. "No!" cries Rin as she dangles precariously in her caged perch. "Shasta! Save me!""Sie kann dich jetzt nicht retten. Sie steht unter meiner Kontrolle."She can not save you now. She is under my control.
"Jetzt präsentiere es mir ... was? Wo ist es?"The bloated head roars, too inarticulate to extend the courtesy of translating for its guests, yet, its mental malice is palpable, and Rin can sense acutely the cause of its rage!"Finde es! Schnell!"
"Here I am!" calls Shasta, for she has scaled, sword clenched 'twixt teeth straight and white, to the height of the rachitic scaffolding, and stands, torch blazing in hand, far above the eyeless monstrosities!"Now, you command me! I will put down the fire!""Was? Nein! NEIN!"
Through the air twists her limber and statuesque body, guiding the point of her great sword in front of her, makeshift torch blazing a trail of sparks in the eternal night of the cavern, and impales the gargantuan horror in the center of its eyeless face!"AAAAAAAARRRGH!"
As the colossal thing topples backward, Shasta braces one foot against its enormous visage and raises the torch into the wind!"Now, give us a kiss!"
With strength beyond her frame, the torch is plunged downward, into the terrible giant's cavernous mouth, and the sickened gases fermenting inside its distended brainpan erupt, lighting its intumescent skull from within and casting the entire enormous cavern in a flash of brilliance!
Rin squeaks in fright as the rickety cage dips harshly to one side, knocking her against the rough bars, and she fears the chain which holds it aloft may snap, but then from beyond the rim spies the familiar blonde locks of the warrior-woman!"Shasta! You came back for me!""Hold still, Rin - I'll have you out of there in a moment!"
"What about those other things?" the girl asks trepidatiously, as she haltingly allows the other to carry her across the void from cage to charred giant."They're fleeing deeper into the caverns. And we should do likewise and flee to the surface immediately!""But why?"
"If the power fails for good while we're still inside," shouts the woman as they lope over rough stone toward the tunnel upward into the catacomb city, "we'll never get the portcullis open!""Oh, I wish I had never found this place!" calls the girl as they disappear into the darkness beyond the flickering firelight of the blistered and scorched cephaloid.

Cool night air lies heavy with vapor below the canopy of distended leaves and petals, as the sounds of the endless jungle are disturbed by voices."Why did we have to keep walking?"
"I wanted to put some amount of distance between those things and us, in case some of them got any ideas watching us on their 'fewing screens'", comes the reply from Shasta as she uses her sword to dislodge a bloom which even as they pass overhead begins to send out clinging roots."What will happen to them?" questions Rin as she darts beyond the hungrily questing perennial to attend the woman's side."If we're lucky, the emergency power will fail soon, and it will be locked forever. Good riddance, too. No one else should have the misfortune of finding that place. How close is this mine?"
Animated by escape after escape from deadly peril, the adolescent's buoyed spirits belie the exhausting struggle so recently endured to effect their safe return! "Not far. Maybe half a day? Are you going there now?"
"If any of those slavers survived, they may have gotten a good start on us," states the warrior-woman, casting her gaze upward to where a scant part in the foliage reveals bare starlight. "I think we could all use a rest," says Shasta at last, having finished pondering the weight of their speedy travel against the lodestone of exhaustion. "And some food will do us good. Go and fetch some fruit while I light a fire," she commands, while to their side nary a disturbance is seen as the great panther's tail slips into the vegetation surrounding them.
Her life and freedom saved again and again by Shasta, the maiden hurries to occupy well the brief responsibility crowned upon her, and finds to her delight clutches of lush and swollen berries dripping down to hardly beyond arm's reach! Eagerly she grasps a handful each and shivers in the misting air driven to the lowland by the coming sun.
As the girl plucks their fill from the inexhaustible bounty of the jungle, the warrior-woman gathers up what few remaining sticks remain unscathed of sodden rainfall, no doubt drawn by the unnatural storm of the previous night. Drawing both steel and flint from a cunningly-sewn fold hidden in her most meager of attire, Shasta quickly kindles her second fire of the pre-dawn morning, sending a gentle breath through lips full and succulent as that of the fruit which Rin pulls from above.
"That smells amazing!" marvels the girl as the hare's sizzling flesh wafts a delectable odor across the overgrowth clearing."Thank Nali," laughs Shasta, turning the stick on which the carcass is impaled. "She thought kind enough to bring back a second one for us."
Bellies full, drawn beyond all reserves by the harrowing events of the night, the three at last sink to the gentle oblivion of sleep, as the last coals of the fire crackle and smolder, fuming as they surrender to slow dousing from the cloying early-morning dew.Yet beyond the clearing, something watches.
Shasta is the first to stir, as cooling dew dwindles on the leaves and the air begins to warm with the rising sun.Like the mist itself she rises in total silence, disturbing not even the sensitive ears of the panther which lies slowly breathing at the edge of the clearing.
Half a rabbit may be fine for Rin, but I'll need something more substantial in my stomach if I'm to take on an army of slavers on half a day's march, muses the warrior-woman in silence as she treads nimbly across a fallen log now coated in new life. Perhaps Nali didn't take the last of those rabbits...
"Oh," she exclaims, for lost in thought she finds that she has stumbled upon a colossal flowering plant, unlike anything she has experienced in all her travels!"What's this? It looks a bit like a giant sunflower!"
"And such a scent," proclaims she, pulling it closely and drawing in the fragrance to her dainty nose. "I can hardly help taking another-"
"-by science, all of a sudden, I feel so weak," Shasta whispers, curling her full ripe lips in a frown and holding one hand to her temple as the world reels beneath her feet.
Muscles slacken, and her lovely form sinks to the ground in a tumble, limbs numb and useless, and before her blurring vision a figure parts leaves and slinks closer, wary of the mighty sword which lies fallen at her side!"Not sunflowers, but STUN-flowers!" laughs the hooded shape as the earth turns beneath Shasta's head."Who-" Shasta mutters, then green turns to black and all is still again.
When next she knows, Shasta's eyes flutter open beneath wavy curls of blonde hair, and she thinks that she must still be paralyzed, intoxicated from that strange flower, yet in moments does she feel strength returned to her limbs, yet though mighty are the strainings of her shapely arms, some force holds them still against wood worn smooth!
Blood courses through her veins, and confusion gives way to anger, for as she tugs at her bonds she demands emancipation from her unseen jailor!"Where am I? Who's there? Release me at once!""Ah, you're awake much sooner than I had expected," comes a response from the corner of her gaze. "No matter, that seems providential to my task.""You!" roars Shasta, straining against the ropes drawn taut around slim wrists. "What do you want with me?"
"Oh, whoever you are isn't important. With those slavers operating around here, I get so few guests... I was almost starting to fear that all my work would be for nothing, until you arrived," murmurs the strange masked woman as she traces a finger across Shasta's firm abdomen."What do you mean?" Shasta demands. "What are you planning on doing to me?""You!" shouts the woman. "You should be grateful for your role to come! I have finally found the answer to the problem which has driven our species to the edge of extinction! But now... I need test subjects.""Test subjects? You're mad!" Shasta laughs, though within her there is fear for as she covertly struggles to free herself she finds the cords unyielding!"Not mad, and no more planning," the woman says, and in the dim recess of the wrecked building's highest space something shudders and tilts glistening into the morning light.
"Today will be the conception of a new race of mankind!" proclaims the hooded woman in a voice swelling with pride as she sweeps a gloved hand upward to where descends a gargantuan plant, raised in the captive space of this makeshift laboratory, and as its fronds uncurl in the warming air Shasta's eyes are drawn to a protruding feature which seems to swell even before her eyes!
"Your friend will be waking soon, and will be drawn to the stunflower, just as you were," calls the woman as she turns her back to Shasta and steps down the crumbling mortar to the jungle floor below. "When my creation reaches the point of maximum distention, I wish to be far from it. Remember, you will be remembered as the mother of a new mankind!"
As Shasta tugs at the cords which hold her tightly to the wooden board, the travesty of rough science which towers before her helpless form begins to rustle and sway as the sun's rays send rolling warmth across the jungle to chase away the chill of night!>Try to escape>Switch to Rin and Nali>Something elseRoll a d12 and link to this post for whatever you do, please! Wood creaks, flesh draws itself red and raw, yet no quarter do the bonds allow, and Shasta sees no way to free herself save the intervention of another!
The bizarre plant's appendage descends upon her, and as it twitches closer and closer, the sight of her own face reflected in the prong's mucousy coating coaxes an unbidden scream from her perfect lips!
Rin awakens with a gasp, at once cognizant of the heated air, such a change from the chill of post-storm night when last she tread the waking world. "Shasta?" she calls, and rises at the emptiness of response.
"Nali's gone too," glowers the adolescent, turning from where she had bedded down to survey the remains of the fire and the absences beyond. "I wonder if they left me here-"

"Come on, Nali," she grunts, tossing the spit to the wet earth as she rolls on her knees and pushes herself up into a jog. "Let's go find Shasta."
The ghastly thing fairly pours liquid from its crinkled rent, so vigorously does it pulsate as it slathers her bare navel, and Shasta knows with cold terror that the point of maximum distension of which the weird woman spoke has come at last, for the rubbery skin of the protrusion is stretched thin encasing the veiny and throbbing mass beneath, while thick slippery vines begin to twine 'round her body, holding her in place even as it begins to inexorably wrench apart her long and well-toned limbs!
"Shasta!"The cry is strained, as the girl climbs the rough broken surface of the masoned flatwork and lifts herself to the floor of the savage laboratory, but for Shasta it is the sweetest of music, for it is at the moment of her utmost peril!
"What can I do?""Untie me!" cries Shasta as Rin leans down to tug at the bonds."I can't undo the knots!" the girl wails, pulling uselessly against them."Find something sharp!"
Unseen by the panicked girl, a tendril of the monstrously amatory flower creeps between the two and launches itself up, drawing a cry of pain from Rin as it batters her away! The girl flails backward, jarring hard against a poorly-preserved crate, and glass bottles clink together as the makeshift jumbled shelves shake loose!
With a sickening expulsion of thick, heavy bubbles, the air is suddenly filled with choking tarry smoke, and Shasta feels the flower's grip upon her loosen as it reels upward, flailing in agony!
"Quickly!" Shasta calls. "While it's distracted!"
"Something sharp... something sharp... Oh, what's this?" Rin chirps, as she draws from a rotting barrel the sword of Shasta, stolen away with its mistress and hidden until its moment of need!
"Careful!""I am being careful!"
"Free!" cries the warrior-woman as the bonds slack loose around her wrists and she tugs out the ties pulling her ankles to the smooth wood plank!
"A dangerous thing to hold - even more dangerous to lose!" Shasta laughs as she takes sword in hand and presses Rin across the rubble of the masonry. "Now let's go, before the air clears!"

"Where are we going?" implores Rin as she bounds at the heel of the warrior-woman through the steaming meadow. "The mine is the other way!""First we need to find that witch," Shasta calls from the lead, "and put her to her own table! And I know where to find her. Now all we need is-"
"-Nali!"The cry is unexpectedly choked, for as Shasta pushes her way free of the clustered wildflowers does her mouth widen in shock!
Before them lies the panther, immobile upon the sandy floor of the shallow stream, and beyond stands the witch, malicious mirth glinting evident in her shrouded eyes!"You!" roars Shasta. "What have you done to Nali?""Nothing much," intones the witch in a deadpan drawl. "Just a little rabbit. Sometimes the grass they eat makes them toxic."
At the witch's proclamation Shasta gasps and clenches tight her sword. "Poison!"
Before Rin's eyes can follow, Shasta leaps the distance to the witch and lands atop the other, blade pressed to the poisoner's throat, and gasps out a sobbing shout!"You'll die for this!"
"Kill me and you'll never get the antidote in time," the witch says mercilessly. "Antidote?" questions Shasta, eyes narrowing, for she has seen that this new foe is rich with guile!"The panther will not die... right away. There is still time to save it."
After a long pause the guillotine is lifted from the witch's throat, and she draws from her strange suit a piece of paper, preserved against the age and weather and covered in rough markings."What is this?" Shasta asks as she takes the oddity in hand."A shopping list," mutters the other. "There is a ruin not far from here, full of strange wonders. The things I seek are there. Find them, bring them to me, and your beast may yet live."
"How long will Nali live?" Shasta pleads."Not long," says the witch, sparing the two a glance. "Only until nightfall. You were crafty enough to escape my experiment. You should be able to make it there and return by then. If you fail, the cat dies."
"We'll return. We'll have your things. And you had better have the antidote."

"Can you see the bottom yet?" calls Shasta to the stony rend in the earth as she grips tight the stout vine which hangs down into the darkness below her well-planted feet and reels it slowly lower and lower.
As the vine lowers and the girl along with it, Rin's young eyes watch as before her rough stone walls give way to strange made things of the before people. "I think so," calls she, not knowing if words reach the narrow slit of light far above her, unease rising as her gaze traverses the gargantuan enclosure.
The girl soon finds her misgiving eased, as a trembling throughout the stalk follows a momentary blotting of the light, and soon does follow the shapely form of Shasta who as she nears the ground removes sword from teeth and advises the other, "I've tied the vine tightly. It shouldn't outgrow the knot until we've finished with that witch's business."
Shasta's eyes are quick to acclimate to the gloom of the buried ruin, and as she alights to the floor and locks eyes with the girl the query comes in a tone of half-reverence, for until a single day past, Rin has seen only matted remains of glories coated in green and strangling life. "What is this place?" "Some kind of ancient marketplace," asserts Shasta, keen eyes already having noted displayed in windows frosted thick with settled dust the relics of what Rin calls the before people.
"Now, let's find what we've come here for and hurry, before Nali-" Shasta begins, but quickly stops as her ears catch a strange noise, high and constant, echoing across the high walls to the open plaza in which they stand, swelling to proximity before Shasta or Rin can make to disguise their presence!
From around a corner whirs a figure garbed in black to match the shadows of this hidden remnant in which they stand, and both intruders are caught by surprise as the source of the noise reveals itself, a girl scarcely older than Rin riding astride a small wheeled device that she expertly maneuvers about the rubble! "Upsiders!" shouts the stranger as she propels herself along the top of a lengthy and narrow seat and off the other side, nimbly spinning about her head a strange blunt polearm twinned by another strapped to her lean back as she does. "Upsiders droppin' in!"
Quicker than Shasta expects does the stranger close upon them, for the wheels beneath her feet seem well-suited for this flat sprawl of obstacles!Roll a d12 and link to this post for whatever you do, please! To roll, put dice+1d12 in the Options field!

The stranger bears down on the warrior-woman with the sword, and though Rin makes to cry out a warning Shasta is already in the air, long and toned legs carrying her to the heavy vine!
Barely can the stranger blurt out a sound-"Wha-?"
-before Shasta spins about the vine as a dancer on a pole, and thrusts one small and shapely heel forward, impacting against the other's chest and driving her from her rudderless vessel!"Oof!"
Rin stoops low and snatches the rolling board before it can escape, and the other stirs and shifts but a finger 'fore the sword of Shasta is held pointed and prickling to her throat."Not a movement, girl," chides the warrior-woman. "I have no desire to take your life, but try me with that pike again and you may find my sword of a different mind."As Rin marvels at the strange construction, the stranger glances from blade to gaze and nods a grin which prompts her release.
"Sky-flyin' pound-around!" exclaims the stranger cryptically, fingers gesticulating wildly as Shasta watches her flailing excitement. "All-out dismount!""What did she say?" Rin asks, glancing between the two, but ever is Shasta pressing forward, cutting to the heart of her chase as quickly as her sword against its foes!"Do you live here? Are there others?" asks Shasta, and though a reply is given freely, the stranger's response is vexing."Quadruple twin-kin!"
At that, Shasta is on her heel, spinning with sword drawn as the strange and steady noise of other rolling boards surrounds them through the vacant plaza!
Around the cracked benches weave and leap three more girls, all seemingly twins of the first!"Upsiders!" shouts one as they roll into the glimmer of light cast down from the rend far above their heads."De-boardsiders!" calls another."Knock and roll!" the third cries as the trio roll to a stop well beyond the reach of Shasta's swing.

"Instant kick-stop!" exclaims the one whom first charged the pair of intruders. "Upsiders supreme!""Shasta, they all have the same face!" blurts Rin as the strange girls lower their makeshift weapons and ease their boards forward tentatively."Quadruplets," Shasta tells her companion in this most bizarre of burglaries. "I've heard such things are becoming more commonplace."
"Upsiders dropping permanent?" questions one of the four identical girls as they begin to crowd around Shasta and Rin."We aren't here to stay," Shasta says, shaking her head as she pulls from her sparse covering the witch's folded paper. We're looking for something.""Mega-magazine!" exclaims one girl, instantly corrected by her sibling even as she reaches out impulsively to grab at the artifact."Micro-mag! Page one special!""I'm looking for something called Lawn-Kleen. Do any of you know what that is?"
"Here, it says it right here on the page-" Shasta proclaims, pointing one delicate fingertip at the witch's scrawling. "Alright, even if you can't read, I can," Shasta explains, patient in the face of urgency. "We just need to look around this place until we find-"
"Roll-Scrapes fountain-roundin'," answers the most heavily-armored of the four with finality in her voice. "Upsiders rollin', Upsiders gettin' cuttin'-guttin'. Pet-Sores. Drill-Kills. Roll-Scrapes fountain-roundin'."
"Round!" she calls then, turning and propelling herself from the others with one patched boot.
With that two of the others drop to the floor their own wheeled boards with clatters that ring out through the dimly lit plaza, kicking them into place and throwing themselves forward to speed quickly away at their sister's command!
Yet one lingers, hesitant to spur forth her own board even as her sisters roll past and toward the shadowy edge of the plaza, when noticed as she does by the most armored of the four, and there is ire in the words as she again calls to her lagging kin!"Tree! Round-around!"
"Roll-Scrapes round-around," says the girl to Shasta, dejection heavy on her tongue as she pushes herself into a slow coast away from the pair.
"Now what?" pouts Rin as the other girl rolls away."We do our best," calls Shasta joylessly as she launches herself into a sprint across the empty plaza. "For Nali's sake."
Before she can take more than a pace, however, a voice accompanied by the strange sound of hard wheels resounds at her back!"Upsiders!"
"Upsiders rollin'-no-knowin', rollin' to cuttin'-guttin'! Tree rollin'-knowin'. Upsiders Tree-rollin'?""What did she say?" exclaims Rin in bafflement at the strange girl's patois."If I'm not wrong, I think she wants to escort us through this place. Well, Tree, I would be glad for you to help us."
"Besides, we can use someone who can handle themselves in a fight," Shasta says to Rin, mirth in her voice as full lips creep up in a smirk."When am I going to get a weapon?" the girl demands.Shasta laughs and meets the eyes of the girl with a toss of her luxuriant mane. "Perhaps we'll find one in this marketplace!"

Thanks for running!
The plaza returns to undisturbed silence where little stirs save for the vine's occasional twitch, and the single beam of wan light from the slash far above the plaza drifts eastward to almost a sliver before voices are heard again."What's the use?" Rin asks sullenly, wiping sweat-matted hair from her brow. "This place doesn't end!"The voice which responds steels itself against the unease which rides upon its mistress, for as each time thoughts return to her faithful panther, the sensation as though she were falling off a cliff redoubles. "There is still a bit of daylight left. We may find the witch's desire and save Nali yet.""Pet-Sores shadow-peepin' no-rollin'; Upsiders vacation-motivation!" boasts Tree as she drifts in an arc upon her strange wheeled board behind the others.
And so the trio continue their impossible search, for so long as the light holds shall the warrior-woman Shasta endeavor in her quest and pull with her bold spirit the others in her wake!"Nothing but bags in here," Rin calls as she peers inside the darkened shop. "Maybe we should take some in case it's heavy?"
The plight of her village enslaved is far from the girl's mind, and poisoned Nali as well, so overwhelmed is she by the multitudinous artifacts both unaccountable and alien through which they must now sift."What are those?" asks she, hesitant to enter the shop where on walls painted angry stripes of red and black hang strange shapes like oblong clubs festooned with glinting ornaments and behind them, farther into the shadows, rest squat looming boxes nearly the size of the girl, set in with round depressions."Musical instruments of some kind," Shasta says. "No doubt they need electricity to serve any purpose but kindling."
Still they walk, and in passing a dust-rimed window so wide Rin is baffled that the space has not collapsed upon itself, the girl spies beyond the glass a pair of small and shiny things, mirrored in form. "What are those?"Shasta glances to the pedestal beyond back again to the rolling native guide before her. "Shoes.""For your feet? But they don't look like you can walk with them!""They weren't made to be easy to walk in," comes the enigmatic response.
Familiar as she is to this strange sunken marketplace, Tree passes the shops with little hesitation, and before her strides lovely Shasta, glints from the rend in the ceiling playing like sheets of lightning across her beautiful and pained eyes, so it is that Rin is quickly outpaced as she turns with a gasp to the shape which seems to soar above her from the shaded sill."Look!"
Hands cupped alongside her brow, the girl peers through the glass to the elegantly sewn fabric tightly wrapped upon a form of parodic approximation to her own, and so savage and low is her own origin that such fineries seem unreal. "Is it something you wear? I think it is!"
"Rin!" calls Shasta in a low voice, for she rightly fears that their luck in avoiding the other inhabitants of this forsaken bazaar may falter, and long passed are they, by her reckoning, from the fountain claimed by Tree's identical sisters. "Stay close!""Have you ever seen such a thing?" exclaims the jungle-born waif, breaking her gaze from the habiliment.
"You can come back here later if you like," Shasta chides, "but for now-""ROLL-SCRAPES!"-Shasta spins on one heel at the shout, sword poised before her, and curses this place for its floor which bereft of fern or twig makes near impossible the discernment of footfalls!
Before them across the wide hallway swagger a pair of women bedecked in padded garb and laden with wicked-looking instruments! Muffled by swaddlings calls one in a voice worn rough and raw, "Roll-Scrapes grindin' Drill-Kills patch!""Thinkin' Roll-Scrapes lookin' cuttin'-guttin'!" the other agrees, tapping hard against a bench the crudely barbed metal pole clenched tight in one gloved fist as the pair advance!>Fight>Run>Talk>Something elseRoll a d12 and link to this post for whatever you do, please! "No-go!" shouts Tree from behind them as she kicks her wheeled board erect and smoothly sets to rest her strange blunt polearm alongside its twin in the intricate clutch upon her back. "Upsiders, no-go!"
"Tree, wait!" cries Shasta as she holds an arm ineffectively to the passing girl, who strides without fear to meet the menacing duo."Roll-Scrapes no grindin' Drill-Kill patch," Tree says, voice and eyes both held level against the other. Sensing the precarious balance in which they now find themselves, Shasta lays upon the ground her mighty sword, for she knows conflict with these savage market-dwellers may bring ruin upon the heads of Tree's siblings!"Look, see here? I'm putting down my sword-"
Yet even as she does, the sunlight glimmering from the crack above their heads has grown scarce, and with it has frayed Shasta's patience, and so to the forefront of the impromptu raiding party does she step, and imperiously does she address the roughly bedecked and muscled woman before her!"Now we haven't 'grinded' anything," she begins, brushing off Tree's surprised grasp upon her arm. "We are here looking for something called Lawn-Kleen, and science only knows what it is, but if we don't get it by sundown my friend will die, so either the two of you tell me where we can find it, or I can put you through that wind-"
Rin and Tree share a gasp as a hand launches out and grasps Shasta roughly! Hot blood surges as the warrior-woman feels her muscles tense beneath perfect skin, for the other drags her close and growls an exhortatory threat!"Upsiders grindin', Upsiders gettin' cuttin'-guttin'. "No-go!" shouts Tree, but the thick metal rod levered by the other stops her way! "No-go cuttin'-guttin' Upsiders!""Roll-Scrapes get no-showin'," warns the warden.
Keener than either sword or limb is the mind of Shasta, and though she has spent but hours in this place, already has she mastered the rude tongue of its colonists, and so do from between perfect lips come their strange debased words!"Upsiders no-showin' on Drill-Kills patch. The two women take with gloved hands the crumbling paper and with a delicateness that surprises Shasta hold it aloft to catch the disappearing glimmer of the waning sun.
After but a moment do the pair glance to each other, though until the one speaks does their intent belie even Shasta's vigilant gaze!
Through the half-collapsed passages are they led by a silent guide who does not bother to slow for them, and though Shasta feels upon the back of her graceful neck hateful stares from hidden eyes, they travel unmolested by the claimants of this place until at last their host stops and tips her spike-tipped staff to a glass facade precariously exposed to the weighty slide of rock which depends from the cave roof above it."No-showin' on Drill-Kills patch see big dark," the woman says as she fades back into the shadows away from the interlopers.
Shasta descends alone into the darkened shop, sword raised warily, for the high shelves cast deep and confusing shadows across themselves as she wades through blackness.
Even Shasta's capable sight is strained by the dimming ray of sunlight filtering down into the marketplace, and she feels burning tears begin to well at the corners of her eyes for though she casts her gaze mightily across the gloomy shop her quarry refuses to rouse itself!
Just then, as she blinks away the first of what she knows will be many tears shed for her lost friend, do eyes alight upon the highest shelf, and there beneath the deadened bar of electric lights waits the very image of that for which she has searched so urgently!
"What was in there?" squeaks Rin, as a shade hints itself in the gloom beyond the glass and Shasta steps fully into the dying light of the cavern-market.
"More than enough for that witch, I should think," Shasta laughs, and slides one of the two weighty boxes into Rin's arms. "Here, but be careful! "Tree..." Shasta says as the three catch sight of both the fountain which marks Roll-Scrapes territory and the vine which marks their passage from this subterranean market, already pulled up nearly beyond their reach from when last they stood at its tip. "We couldn't have found this without your help.""Upsiders - Shasta an' Rin - Tree got Shasta an' Rin in thinkin'-place. Tree keepin' Shasta an' Rin in thinkin'-place," confides Tree."We're gonna remember you too," Rin blurts. "Do you want to come... um... upside? With us?"

"Well... it was nice to meet you," affirms Rin as Shasta lifts her to the vine. "Maybe I'll come back and see you!""Tree seein' Rin, Tree smilin' big!"
"By science, it's almost sundown!" Shasta exclaims as she breaches the surface of the rend and beholds the fading light of day.
"Come on, follow me!" she calls back, already on her toes and racing from the gap toward the swamp beyond."But- the witch is the other way!" cries Rin in confusion."I know," comes a snarl as the warrior-woman sprints across the cooling mossy ground. "But we need to pick up something first!"
The monstrous plant produces from its leafy guts a menacing rumble, to which the hooded and gloved woman raises a hand and reassures it with the soothing voice of a mother. "Yes, my precious pet... sleep now in the cool night air. Tomorrow you will warm again and I will find you another woman-"
"Witch!" cries Shasta as she approaches the ancient masonry. "I have your prize!""Truly? I did not think you would succeed," the witch laughs mockingly, turning just enough to favor Shasta with a glance. "Put it on the stone and back away.""What of the antidote?" Shasta demands. "The sun is all but down!""Put the box on the stone and back away," the witch repeats.
With impassioned haste Shasta does as the witch commands, and soon the hooded woman opens the ancient container and pulls forth a handful of white granules which she sifts through her fingers. "Ah, my eyes burn in its presence! Just as potent as ever!"
"Now," roars Shasta, "the antidote!"Without turning the witch answers, so engrossed in the prize is she! "There is a vial in a tree bough where your panther lies. Hurry and you may still save its life."
"After all this time," muses the witch as she turns her back to the fleeing pair. "At last I am at the threshold!"
"It will be safe here for now, until I can find a safer place," the witch mutters to herself, placing upon the rickety table the delivered tribute, but unbeknownst to her, a svelte and shapely form creeps in silence to the edge of the masonry!
"Tomorrow, I will begin work on your broth-"An unexpected clinking of bottles draws the witch's planning to an abrupt halt, and as she turns...
...the Lawn-Kleen box jolts and rocks about, knocking against the precarious bottles and sending them tumbling to the ground once more!
"A chemical reaction of some kind... brought on by the change in altitude... moisture in the air..." proclaims the witch as she grasps for the shaking box to cease its violent disruption, yet as her fingertips brush against the lid of the box are they knocked back-

The chittering mutant weed snaps its parrotlike beak again, nearly slicing from her hand the witch's finger, and again she cries, yet this time her plea is answered!"I would very much like to watch this thing chew you to bits-""Wha-?"
"-but I have other plans for you this night," Shasta growls, lilting voice heavy with menace as her sword chops the weed in twain, spilling its caustic fluid across the witch!"You!"
"Me," agrees the warrior-woman as she strikes against the witch's brow the pommel of her sword!
The witch is slow to awaken, and does so at reluctance, for a throbbing in head matches pace with her as she crawls to consciousness. "Mmm... wha... what- my hands!" she screeches as she tugs at the cords binding her to her own smoothly-worn sacrificial table!
A glint of light catches her eye, and she turns to behold in the torchlight the very same warrior-woman whom she meant to give up to this unnatural suitor!"Ah, you're awake at last," Shasta says with a malicious grin as she leans closer, torch held high above gold locks."You! I thought it would be best if she didn't see what's to come.""What- what are you talking about?" gasps the witch, frantically tugging at her bonds.
"Your own words betrayed you," Shasta says, holding high her torch, and at the edge of its glow she sees stirring the gargantuan protrusion of her terrible creation! The witch struggles even more vigorously as its meaty tendrils begin to unfurl, yet so well has Shasta knotted the cords that she can but listen in mounting panic as the warrior-woman continues!"I realized that it was not the sunlight that arouses your monster, but the warmth of the air itself. See how it wakes with a fire nearby!"
"Fool!" spits the witch, body contorting as she thrashes in helpless frenzy. "You cannot make me the bride of my creation! Its spawn will kill the mother! All my work will be-""You needn't worry about surviving the birth of this nightmare's spawn," Shasta tells her, and the witch's strains halt as she gapes panic-eyed at the warrior-woman. "You won't survive the conception."
"What- what do you mean-"The witch struggles to see past the edge of the table, and as she does a scream flies from her lips, for all about the awful bedchamber has Shasta placed kindling, piled high and well!
Like Procrustes before her is the witch left to face her own dire table, Shasta watching as in the bright flames the monstrous suitor acts heedless to the charring of its own limbs, so vigorously intent is it upon its rutting with the witch held helpless and doll-eyed, and as her screams becoming choked in the awful smoking heat of the makeshift laboratory the thing lets out a roar at the height of its impregnative state, a sound that rises above the flaring brilliance mingled with the last sustained scream before at last all Shasta's delicate ears perceive is the crackling of the beams.
"You're back!" Rin exclaims with glee as Shasta presses from the brush and into the light of the campfire. "I thought I heard something. Is everything alright?"
"We'll sleep easily tonight."
"And tomorrow," Shasta says as she beds down on the cool spongy moss, sword in hand, "we will reach this mine, and see about setting your village free."

Shasta ducks low to the mossy ground and slinks forward seeking the concealment of an ancient metal husk, when from around the edge of slid rock face come two more women in the same time-roughened garb!"You're late," calls the one stationed at the entrance to the pass as the three convene."We're short one," responds one of the pair. "Ever since that mess of a roundup-""Don't say that too loud," her partner replies. "The roundup captain getting eaten, the carriage destroyed, the horse ran off, and those two slaves escaped as well. The Chief is looking for someone to flay right now."
"How did you know there were other guards?" asks Rin, slipping through the flowers to join Shasta behind the husk."I didn't! Now hush, they're coming this way!"Roll a d12 and link to this post for whatever you do, please! To roll, put dice+1d12 in the Options field!

"Shasta?" calls a voice, distant and echoing as if from across a vast canyon, and Shasta feels numb limbs begin to stir.
"Shasta, are you awake?""Rin?" Shasta ventures, for uncertain is she at this moment of the name which lends itself to the face before her! "Did we sneak inside?"
"Not exactly," utters the girl sardonically, for as Shasta's vision clears she finds herself in irons, amid numerous other women similarly enslaved and burdened by rough-handled pick-axes as they labor about a barren clearing in the rock!
As Shasta draws herself to shaking feet and finds herself bound to Rin by their iron collars, the very woman who waylaid her parts the crowd of kidnapped laborers and gestures at the pair with a crudely-lacquered baton!"You there! If you're awake, get working! Follow those other slaves into the mine!"
"I am slave to no one!" shouts the warrior-woman, defiant even in chains!
"If you won't work, I'll take it out on this one!" the slaver laughs, drawing a cry of surprise and pain as she cuffs Rin's jaw with the baton.Roll a d12 and link to this post for whatever you do, please! To roll, put dice+1d12 in the Options field!

At the sight of Rin imperiled does Shasta's blood rise, and though the chain which binds the two is made short to encumber and hinder escape, for one such as she it offers instead a means of escape, so leap she does quicker than the guard can react, and quicker still does she grasp both her own short lead and Rin's as well, straining them together around the thick neck of the guard-woman!
Yet so short is the tether between them that Shasta finds she may not wrap it fully around the other's throat, though even as the baton of Rin's assailant tumbles to the rocky ground do two others approach warily the guard locked helpless within the warrior-woman's grip!Roll a d12 and link to this post for whatever you do, please! "Rin, grab her k-"Before Shasta can utter her command, the guard drives an elbow sharply against her elegant chin, and stunned by the impact Shasta looses her grip upon Rin's lead as the warrior-woman reels backward!
As the three tumble to the ground Rin gasps and coughs for air as the guard quickly grasps for her lost baton!"Oh, Rin, I'm so sorry-" Shasta cries, but as the shadows of the other guards fall upon them she knows it is scant comfort!

"I warned you what would happen if you refused to work!" barks the woman with the deep and roughly-mended scar across her brow and cheek. "Hold her down!""Rin!" Shasta cries, but held as she is she can only watch as the cruel guard-woman raises her baton against the girl!
A baton digs against her elegant and slender throat, forcing her view upward as the club descends against the girl with a dull thud, and a crowd of slave-workers, drawn by the cries of the scuffle, gasp and flinch as the girl screams in agony!

Struggle mightily does Shasta, yet to no avail, for injury and exhaustion have taken their toll, and she can only cry "Yield! I yield! Oh, stop!"
"I'll work!" says she again, weaker this time, "just stop hurting Rin!"The guards upon her back relinquish their hold upon her and she pushes herself into a stance as the scarred woman sneers and laughs. "That didn't take long. Put them in the pen. And the rest of you, let this be a lesson on disobedience! Now finish up your work!"
"Oh, Rin, don't cry so! Here, let me-""Dear Rin, you poor little-""Sweet little Rin, look at what they've done to you-"The captive women of the village fuss and coo over the bawlings of the wounded adolescent as it resounds over the rock, amplified as they are by Shasta's own guilt!"Rin, I'm so sorry!"
"Haven't you done enough already?""It's your fault she was attacked!""Who are you, anyway?"Faces once full of affection turn at once to ire, for to these women Shasta is but a stranger and the source of Rin's woe!
Caught as she is in the blight of astounding proportion in the eyes of the villagers, Shasta struggles to give voice to the validity of her rapport when the girl Rin utters an expulsion of expounding!"No! Shasta is my friend! She saved my life! She freed me from the slavers after they caught me in the village! She came here to rescue you all!"
"But how can one woman free all of us?" asks one, placing the bloodied rag back into the bucket, and all eyes fall upon Shasta.
"Together," Shasta declares, "we are more than one woman."

We prisiom break now
>>3009577Are we no longer connected to Rin by a chain?
Untethered from the girl until their labor begins anew, Shasta stalks the edge of her confinement like a captured beast, hunting for a means to escape, and again do slender graceful fingers entwine around the stout bars of the pen as Shasta tests its strength, but the pen is well-made and remaining as she does chained and within her current fugue she finds herself unable to summon the mighty energies which have followed her from that far-off Arcology!
One more she turns and grasps the bars, and as the last rays of the setting sun play upon her beautiful face a swelling rises in her throat and she must stifle a gasp!
Beyond the rocky walls of the prison-mine, a familiar black form prowls the edge of the hillside, appearing only long enough for Shasta to know that the panther Nali is close at hand!
As the other women ease themselves to the ground, exhausted from their labor, escape springs to Shasta's mind, yet she knows that if she flees the girl Rin will suffer for her freedom!>Organize a breakout>Gather intel from the women>Flashback to the Arcology>Something elseRoll a d12 and link to this post for whatever you do, please! Rolled 4 (1d12)>>3011561A nice flashback sounds good.
Shasta, wearied as well from her struggles with the guards, moves to share the warmth of the others, but as she beds down the one to her side looks upon her with kind eyes and broaches the subject of the girl's absence from her tribe."Is it true you rescued Rin from an electric cave full of eyeless men?"
"Well, Rin was the one who found the place to begin with," Shasta laughs. "Though I'm glad to never set foot there again.""The men who come here have eyes," says the woman, and with the impassivity with which her words are delivered Shasta is startled, and struggles to find an expression to match her thoughts!"Men? There are men around here? You've seen them?""Of course!" comes the reply, and again Shasta finds herself reeling, for she had thought-
"We've all seen them!" exclaims another, rising from her place on ground. "They come here every three days to take away what we've mined."
"What about logistics? Shifts?""They work us until we die, and then they replace us with new slaves," yawns the woman as she adjusts her prone form within the heavy manacles. "Only now they may have run out, since they haven't brought any in for weeks."
Even more is Shasta eager to seek escape from this prison-pen, yet around her the others are obviously far from possessed by the vigor for immediate flight! As she beds down on the cooling ground, her thoughts drift back in time, to her home...
"Oh, Nine! Nine, wake up, please! For science, they're coming-"
From the black tunnel swell blots of light, catching the dim glare that filters down to this lost place, and the echoes of the heavy boots cease as the armored figure breaches the mouth of the tunnel! "There she is! Reproductive Unit RU-34, place your hands behind-""Leave us alone!" she cries, nearly in hysterics. "Why can't you leave us alone?"
The bulky form looms over her, and as her baton raises visor-shrouded lips give a cruel smirk! "I owe you something for nearly throwing me through a wall. Desperate hope propels the bare foot which drives against the hard and armored boot of the guard, hope for which to see that same strange force she experienced once before, but as dainty foot strikes hard plastic the burly woman barely shifts her stance!"Oh- looks like the are-you wants to get rough!"
"I've been wanting to do this the entire time they've had me down here looking for you," growls the guard as her gloved hand grasps the girl's long hair and drags her roughly backward off the prone form of the man called Nine!"Don't mess her up too badly," cautions her partner. "I'm gonna take my time with this-"The guard swings her baton downward, and a scream flies from the girl's throat, borne not only of sheer terror but rage for the place she has been forced into, the fates which will assuredly befall her friends, and she finds that her screaming is muted for all she can perceive is the rushing of blood between her ears!
The guard is shocked to stupefaction as a delicate palm slaps against the baton, stopping its descent utterly! From the floor the girl watches the guard's eyes flutter as she has scant time to blurt a single word-"No-!"
-before the whirlwind at her feet knocks her insensate across the dirty floor!
Aflush with rage and the strange chemical, the girl hoists above her the prone and armored form of the woman as easily as she would a child's toy, blood pounding at her temple!
From the shadow where lies Sixteen rushes the other guard, her own baton raised wardingly as she advances toward the unreal sight which stands before her!"Hold it, are-you!"
As suddenly as it flooded into her does the strange effect of the chemical begin to recede, and muscles begin to tremble as the unconscious guard quickly approximates its own weight!Roll a d12 and link to this post for whatever you do, please! To roll, put dice+1d12 in the Options field!
Rolled 10 (1d12)>>3011970Shit shit shitThrow her throgh the wall/other guard, you can do it!
As the last of the superhuman vigor drains from her shapely body does the girl roar an inarticulate cry, and propelled by her own slim arms she hurls the unconscious guard against the other!
Prone but not yielding, the guard struggles to throw off the limp weight of her armored colleague as the girl backs panting and shivering against the smooth cold wall!
Never before in her life has she known such things as choice, as resistance, as this strange yearning to flee everything which now stirs in her breast, but for one raised in confinement the sight of freedom terrifies her to the core, yet she knows that to remain in this place will destroy that which stirs inside her before it has yet been born!

I was in the habit of ending every night as a cliffhanger, because the end of the night usually meant the thread was done. The next day when I woke up and re-read that part I kicked myself for not just pausing and resuming in some way that didn't involve a forced fetch quest, which turned out to be an additional annoyance for me because my obsessiveness with a bunch of details in the mall I made myself build on the spot ended up eating most of the days when the thread could be bumped with actiony stuff. That said, I did have fun making up the patois for the mall people.I think I'm going to take tonight to clean up the huge pile of pieces directly to the left of camera and get some more stuff assembled (hopefully) but the new thread should be up by Friday at the latest. Thanks again everybody!
