A bard inside the inn you were currently at offered you some coin or a chance for more local renown by singing your tales as long as you don't interfere with him trying to court your drunken companion. You refused.

"Then stay out of my way." He shoved you aside remasking his brief anger before approaching the skraaleig. His attempt to snake his arm around her drunken waist earned him a powerful bash that had broken his nose before uttering a single word. The bard was knocked out on the floor amidst more cheers from the drunken patrons. He took off to some room upstairs mumbling and cursing under his breath.

As time passed by, the inn was getting quieter. The drunken contest rages on with apparent victor, some serious bets were forming on both sides. You pointed your attention elsewhere to the rather silent patrons enjoying their meal at relative peace.

You approached the scholar who was eating small bits of his roasted chicken, reveling in its taste. He was clearly older than you by a decade or two. His wrinkled face boarded up a bit upon seeing your tome.

"Ah, I see you are a learned man of magic unlike the uneducated babbling riff raffs who call themselves witches and sorcerers! we tap into the well of Arcanum , a natural
primeval force preceding the so called divines. we are the true heirs of magic." he gestured to his guard to bring you a chair.

The way his guard moved was unnatural like an automaton. His hands was pale as well, although more sickly than the scholar with little flesh beneath the loose skin "I am Abardeene, An arcane scholar of Verin. My academic pursuit had led to this swamp , you see. It swallowed hundreds of bodies across the ages. I am interested in one, that of a queen who was unceremoniously dumped here. The scholar weighed your words, stroking his chin "I suppose an aid from a kin of mind outshines that of a common mercenary." He paused, whispering the following "I demand absolute secrecy from your side before anything."

You swore it before him momentary glancing at your companion who outdrank her opponent "The Queen was a powerful necromancer but not just any type of necromancer. She did not rely the Vaithela or any other 'conventional' method...she reanimated corpses with the arcane itself! I aim to learn more from her... imagine the possibilities for tapping more freely into the Arcanum! A heinous act to bring her back but it is a must to make progress. "She can rot in her undying domain, Look at the lands around you. This malignant divine cares not, uncaring and indifferent...truly the worst of.."

His lips were brought to a halt. you look around, all but yourself were frozen in time like lifeless puppets on display. You stare beneath your feet to find a rat peeking its rotten head from a small hole in the floor.

" His tongue is sharp and his words speak volumes. You mortals always sought to bend the rules to your favor. When you did, I rained agony and dismay on your feeble kind but i can punish so many before it became a chore and chastised by my brothers and sisters. You do not know deserve my effort, my mercy ."

The rat emerges from the hole climbing upwards to the table with great finesse "I would have strip the concept of death to bring ease to my mind. Isn't that what you desire so affectionately? To tip the balance of life and death, To shatter any significance of our most vital roles as watchers of the sun start, mid and end? Is this what you truly want? "

This rotting rat morphed into a black dagger, it oozes with corruption "Twist it deep in his heart, A soul like his will have its special place in my domain...or not. I won't force your hands, Scholar."

Perhaps talking some sense into him is the optimal choice. You resisted the temptations of the dagger for the time being "..of..of. Pardon, what was i talking about?" The scholar gave you a puzzled start as time unpaused "Hm? Is it yours? that dagger..."

Before you could try to explain anything, The guard immediately growls, throwing you against the wall with inhuman strength. You winced in pain watching the guard lunging towards you only to be stopped by your drunken companion as she tackled him from behind.

The robe was torn off, a shambling undead was revealed to the whole word, it buried a fork between Gunhild's ribs before escaping with the confused scholar.

You searched for the dagger among the recent chaos but you couldn't find it. With no coin to stay, You and Gunhild left the inn bloodied and bruised.

Mimics!

You spent several days down the road without a hint of civilization. Across a lonely path in between the mountains, you came across four treasure chests. One had fading colours and broken locks while the others were bright and shiny.

"Korkorkorkor~ another one! Another one!" One flinged wide open revealing an array of sharp teeth. A mimic, an overly excited. one

"Ahboooorho~ Traveler, traveler! We mean no harm."

"Wemeannoharm!" Another squealed.

"Lahlahoo~, we got it all!" The last one jingled on the ground, bits of coins and golden fruits falling on the ground only to get slurp the second after.

"Yes,yes phfofofofooo~ a game of chance! You win, you take a prize phfofofoo~. We win, you spent a night inside our Mam. Look at her! Look and pity~ boohoo~" The largest chest opened its mouth, All of its teeth were forcibly extracted. Its tongue was cut off as well, the large mimics whimpers in pain. Every second is pure suffering.

so what do you think? I fear for ours and our battle maiden's safety, should we go back to the tavern and try to find some other companion or move on to the card below the curse?
>>
>>3000992
I'd say we ought to try and talk these mimics into liberating that drow's pet mimic. Also, going after Mogaril if possible. Then, we go after the drow and see how things work out from there. Likelihood is that we'll still want to explore more to get more bonuses at that point.
>>
>>3001021
I doubt they'll let us just get another prize. I say we should go to the last unused card to try and recover more health before either touching the cursed tiles or heading to Mogaril.
>>
>>3001116
I don't quite follow how telling them about another of their kind that has been seemingly enslaved and persuading them to attack its captor in order to free it would be considered a prize. This wouldn't be us getting something for nothing; it would be our two groups collaborating because our interests happen to coincide.

Blissful lake

Hidden among the thicket, you happened upon a peaceful lake untouched by man. A soothing blue aura shimmers from the surface washing you with tranquility and comfort. A peculiar white spirit floats aimlessly over the bond humming a cheerful song, It notices you, her response was a childish giggle. Any attempt to communicate with her further was met with more giggles.

"Look, in the bottom." Gunhild pointed at the underwater bounty of weapons , armour and coins. Why would anyone forsake all of this? An offering perhaps?

Those spirits are unpredictable souls bound to a magical entity, item or in this case : a place. Refusing to go yonder to the domain of the divines till the sun end. They have no certain set of rules; some are malignant and twisted uttering curses to no end, others are less so. You doubt a single coin would unveil all the potential of this gay spirit.

Surely anyone who has ever gotten close enough to witness it would already have taken it for themselves, never mind making the return journey. "He....well. he supposedly wore it and climbed all the way to the top. Then...he dropped from the summit, naked."

"He raises a fair point, Lothar. " His wife briefly joined the conversation, regardless, you were allured to this idea. You went off the branching patch which could theoretically take you to the top.

There, you found three ways to ascend, each is as unforgiving as the rest: First, a continuation of the current path, albeit more slippery with a constant trickle of water from unseen cracks. The second path was an small cave right in the middle, a putrid smell reeks from inside but you could spot a spiral ascending upwards.

Last but not least was this awfully suspicious set slate staircase craved from the mountain itself, unweathered and clean as if it was built the day before.

It seems like a trickster to make it known that this path was made by a trickster to force men to second guess. It might well be the case that the stairway is perfectly normal, and Utemlia is laughing from on high that everyone is too suspicious to take it.

It might also be the case that the stair is an illusion over a 1000-foot drop. It would serve us well to be sure.

At first, the cave seemed to be perfectly normal from inside but once you took the spiral, you found yourself at the very beginning. You did loop with Gunhild a couple of times before noticing something strange....

The layout of cave had subtle changes each time, a misplaced rock here, a small puddle of water there. The constant in all of this was the cave's entrance and the stench. It made each step unbearable.

"Blast this fool!" Cursed the frustrated woman of the north. "This is useless. How long have we been here?"

"Stay here, I am onto something..." This might just work, you thought.

Yes, there was a certain pattern to these changes, it almost seemed that any changes contradict another inside the cave; a smaller rock here and a thicker column there. If only you could influence these changes some...

...The door actually materialized upon touch. Gunhild quickly followed you to an unknown portal. A great flash of white and blue enveloped you both.

The next second, you were on the top of the mountain, a raging storm roared in the skies spurring from both above and down below. You did not find any magical robe...

Only the couples from before, their eyes locked on you.

"I apologize for our little trick, i had to lead you to somewhere...away from her watchful eyes."

"Yes, she will not only lead you to ruin but everyone else in this world. We bear warnings from a divine who cares about mortal. Our master would hate to see your untimely end."

"Our job is done, we leave the judgement to you..."

The ground started to dissolve beneath your feet, your vision fades...

...

You find yourself in a small farm, surrounded by piles of hay and a very confused dog, he licks your numb fingers waiting for you to get up. The owner of the farm barges in with a pitchfork, you didn't look like a common thief to him. He was as confused as his dog.

After some made up excuse about some academic test, he allowed you to leave with your companion who was fuming with anger.

Moonlight Man

Gunhild had suggest a small town to pay a visit to where more Skraalieg congregates there. They often work as mercenaries in the ongoing war for both sides. A couple of nights were spent drinking and having good time with her kin.

You looked at the moon. it shined brightly, more than usual you would say. In your drunken haze, you stepped one a man's fingers.... a beggar mired in his own filth.

"I-i-i i am sorry sir, can you spa-re some coin ?" He shook his rusty bowel. It already had a few

Interesting system. But I assume you want some criticism beyond that, so here goes: I like the card-based navigation on principle, but wish we were a little less beholden to RNG.

Going into encounters completely blind is probably fine, but I don't recall at any point feeling 'we won this encounter purely because we played it well and carefully mitigated its risks'; far more often, I remember only succeeding on an encounter with high DC rolls because we rolled unreasonably well.

Not to say I'm not having fun, because I am. But I personally feel that games like these should generally be either exploration-based with a low skill requirement, or skill-based with a high skill ceiling - only very seldom RNG-based. Because it's far more satisfying for players to be left with a sense of 'I played well' instead of 'I rolled well'.

The price for a room was a steal, for only 10 coins you could rest in a decent room. You paid the innkeeper for the night.

You lost 10 coins!
Resting will restore 20 health upon the end of this encounter.

You browsed the gaming tables, a busy night it was with ongoing dice throws, card flips and so on. Not all were welcoming though, you had a few polite glares when you interrupted their games. The following were open for more players:

The first table had a handful of adventurers sitting next to a crossbreed. A giant half-ogre mere feet away from the ceiling, He was hoarding many weapons and trinkets from other players. His giant club rests by his side.

The second table had a smaller group, mostly drows in black cloaks enjoying a card game you haven't seen before. None was exactly winning so far.

The third table had dwarven ladies chugging ale while throwing dice with two already snoring loudly in their seats. Alas, the final table had a halfling sighing alone among another set of unknown cards. Her fingers were tinted with ink apparently.

"Thank you kindly...a-and apologies for wasting your time." The Halfing gathered all of her cards, leaving the table in shame with some coins for your participation.

You gained 5 coins!

Out of the usual drunkards, few peeked your intrest. You do recognize that elven lady with a knife from earlier, she had gain a fresh scar at her right cheeks. She didn't mind it thought as she consumes her meal silently.

What seemed to be a trader was counting his coin on the table. He had a huge sack next to his feet. And finally, An old goblin was sitting in a lone corner. He clearly didn't want to be here. He had two orc guards standing nearby.

After hastily reserving a room, you both stripped naked. You explored her scar riddled body with your hands and tongue, almost savage primal instinct overwhelmed your mind while you were both entangled with each other.

Cariel was no stranger to the world of pleasure, her perfectly shaped hips, supple breasts, delicate touch...almost perfect. Your moans formed a passionate chorus, these walls were the sole witness of one of your most riveting and most pleasurable experiences.

You collapse under her sweaty, fragrant body. Speechless, you kiss her glistening lips before drifting into deep, deep sleep.
...

Your blissful sleep was interrupted by a hazy figure, you blinked twice to dispel any lingering sleep only to find Gunhid frowning at you with her arms crossed, she was unphased by your naked body "Corkenshal, That knife ear has cleaned our coin! Think for once with your Bolfshe. Varooke dan desnal!"

The woman stormed out of the room , rightfully angry on how gullible you were. At least she didn't steal your clothes, you found a small letter beneath your pillow. It was from the elf.

The elusive goblin
CLUES FOUND: 1/3

The months you spend with the last shield has finally paid off. All the leads had pointed you at his whereabout, an abandoned dwarven mine deep in the mountains. Gunhild was getting restless, she was always on edge in the last few days waiting for an ambush.

The entrance to the mine had...Kobolds? What are they doing here? 20 or so were guarding the entrance, they were lightly armed but they could overwhelm you with ease. You mentally reminded yourself of the death's pellet; it might come in handy later on.

"What's our next move?" Gunhild whispered. They hadn't noticed you just yet. You have the element of surprise.

I kinda agree, move them away from the entrance so we can move past them.

or, can we try to make a rockslide on their heads? that would be awesome

How about we ilusion a naked and disoriented Cariel (since we have the mental image) near a rock ridge, and then we rockslide it on them while they investigate/jump on her.

Kobolds belong a servile race, they rarely think for themselves. A simple, well designed illusion can trick their feeble minds. From your fresh memories, you conjured a naked illusion of Cariel. Gunhild squinted her eye but didn't comment on the matter .

The Kobolds were drawn to the illusion, immediately abandoning their post. A precise arcane blast has started a rockslide, crushing the Kobolds in a wave of ragged boulders and pebbles. You were not sure if some had survived or not.

A couple were still breathing, Those who managed to recover fought to end, unable to call for reinforcements. You and your companion were scraped by their wild assortments of weapons. Nothing too serious.

you lost 10 health!
Gunhild lost 5 health!

You entered the mines, much to your surprise, the tunnels were mostly devoid of anyone. Since those inside weren't alarmed, You and Gunhild slipped by in their shanty quarters. just where are they?

Your unchallenged descend to the lower levels revealed why the mines were abandoned; the whole complex was sunken in molten rocks, it was too unsafe to mine the plentiful veins of iron there..
Draconic language wasn't your specialty, you painfully glossed over the markings and engravings done by the kobolds and pressed onwards. There was a story to be told there that you were unable to decipher.

"Do you hear that?" yes, a droning sound echoing from the darkest reach of the mine. It had a strange rhythm to it.

"HUMANS! SKRAAAAA!!!" another batch of Kobolds had spotted you from a crack in the wall. They were patrolling parallel to this walkway. The heavier clanks of metal were a dark sign; they are more protected than their brethren.

You choose to run, with the Skraaleig blocking incoming bolts and arrows via her shield. it is for the best not to let them gang on you.

Another dilemma was upon you; the walkway has led you to a giant hall (presumingly some dwarven storage area) with multiple ways onward.

The other main door was barricaded with wooden logs, dust had accumulated on the barricade. Given enough time, you can blast your way through it. There was a giant pit at the far end of the hall, some underground waterfall was constantly trickling from above.

The other path used by the Kobolds was narrow, enough for 2 persons at best. It can offer you a decent advantage.

Finally, dwarven mechanisms were built to last, a series of empty carts went back and forth under a small river of molten rocks via a pulley system. Occasionally, the cart would touch the blazing river, unaffected by the immense heat.

Decide fast, or perish.

>Stand your ground in the hall.

OVERCRIT
[+2 Supplies from Radiance]

It was the perfect timing to the unleash the great evil in the pellet granted by lady death. It demanded blood, your blood. You were obliged to provide it.

You lost 20 health!

The twisted and maniacal abomination gored through the waves of kobolds, their stacking pile of corpses prevent their advancement. Soon, they scattered away, surely they will follow one of the many paths in the mines to reach you.

[Sunken thirst is now ready]

This pathway had lead you to another hall, this one was untouched by Kobolds, it had dozens of empty carts piled upon each other. You found a small nugget of gold in one of these carts, it shall fetch a nice sum of coins for you.

You gained 9 coin! [Sunken sun+Scent of Avarice]

The droning sound was getting closer and closer, You carefully blasted the base of the pile to buy you some time; the chaotic landscape of mining carts should slow them down. With the screeches of Kobolds within earshot, you reached the end of the mine, what was beyond that wasn't built by dwarves. All the walls were smoldered by magical fire leaving traces of red snail tracks, still warm on touch.

"Vekoshe..." The last shield was in shock of all the mangled corpses before you, all stripped of their skin with a large gap in their chest. This is not the work of simple minded creatures...no, this is done by someone more sinister. What did this goblin involve himself into.

"A place of power, Tyrestikere...pagan divines." She pointed towards what seemed to be different shrines hidden behind a loose door dedicated to the few mortals who reached divinity. The term itself is incorrect and board however, Most of these divines are savages in nature, though non savage individuals had ascended to divinity, the most notable of them is Mistress Garlionne who is considered by many to be the mother of Arcane arts. Of course, the order of scathing sun forbids any worship of these pagan divines.

The glint of gold caught you attention on the far side of this place, a trail of gold and other riches sits untainted by the flesh of mangled corpses. A treasury of sorts.

You don't have much time left, the kobolds will arrive at any moment.

The first steps you took close to the shrine triggered the summoning of a dwarven apparition who formed an intangible barrier behind you. It had a giant greataxe , enough to cleave you in half. The snarls of the kobolds were getting closer, the ghost lowered his greataxe assuming a less aggressive stance "Piss off, go and plunder somewhere else 'fore i crack yer noggin." the barrier vanished off, the ghost was staring at your soul, waiting for the faintest of mistakes.

Gunhild soaked most the damage, they were too nimble for precise blasts with their small size and quick feet. You did skewer two of them while Gunhild literally jumped over the trembling mage pummeling him to death with her furious fists after axing the rest.

You lost 5 health!
Gunhild lost 10 health!

"Bloody good show." said Ironwrath who was watching within his confinement "There's a wee hidden room down yonder to the right. The pesky lizard won't find you there. Say 'Ssifisv M'atisoh' to enter. You can thank me later.."

You descended down a set of warm stairs, it wasn't enough to burn your feet...it made you slightly uncomfortable. There was a huge opening up ahead, a bed of molten rocks with only one safe passage. But first you have to seek refuge, you were too tired to continue.

Lo and behold, a hidden doorway revealed itself upon uttering these draconic words. The door retained its former illusion when you were both inside. Dozens of Kobolds passed through without noticing you at all.

Inside this mysterious room, you find three dwarven skeletons huddling around a magical bonfire still crackling to this day. A glowing dwarven axe was embedded between the silver ashes. It was smaller than that of ironwrath but as intriguing.

Your nose caught the scent of a mimic in this room, it was...afraid and harmless. Unfortunately, It was pure hidden among the dust riddled bowels and other pottery [Scent of avarice]

Your body ached for some rest. Just in case, you kept alternating with Gunhild watching over for any threat. A couple of hours had passed, you regained your focus once more, it is time to end this.

...

You waited for the right moment to continue; the ongoing patrols were naturally on edge. When the path was clear, you seized this chance and continued forward.

The rickety passage was clearly meant for the lighter kobolds. You walked slowly and scarefully until you reach a giant platform. There you found two giant dragon corpses, one was halfway rotten. The was skinless as if it was recently slaughtered...what?

A large cage contained at least a dozen whimpering women and men, all stripped bare. They were shepherded to a fleshy cocoon which would churn them and spit them back as mangled corpses. Ten Kobold cultists chanted around the cocoon, it throbs loudly in response. This ritual was guarded by 7 elite kobolds and 2 firenewts. There was a huge treasure chest half sunken in the molten rocks with multiple locks. Sitting on a smoldering throne was a familiar person...

Mogaril Badodad...

"I knew it was you..."
his voice was completely different. "You are too late, in mere minutes, i shall retain my true form. A mighty red dragon, free from that accursed body of mine."

"I WILL RIP YOUR HEART OUT, GREENSKIN" Gunhild pointed her bloody axe towards him which made the goblin roar in laughter.

" Foolish human! Do you honestly think this pathetic vessel is my true form?! I used his knowledge to attain what i need to create a new vessel. Hmm.." The 'goblin' stroke his chin " You have shown true might and bravery entering my lair. Mayhaps you wish to become my heart ? The ones my minions brought are too feeble..."

Another unfortunate man met his demise in the churning cocoon "You are fierce, woman of the north...unyielding to any man or beast. But you...You are truly blessed by the divines. The other can leave unharmed with a special reward.

You destroyed the only available path leading to this platform. The other kobolds could do nothing but to watch. their ranged projectiles and spells couldn't cross this wide gap.

"So be it..." There is no turning back, you attempted to blast his head from afar only to have the two firenewt deflecting the arcane shot with their enchanting blades. The cultists kept chanting around the cocoon hoping for one of the sacrifices to be fit to become the heart. You were no match for a living dragon, you either had to destroy the cocoon , kill the goblin or find another mean to achieve victory.

The seven kobolds marched slowly towards you. Two wielded greatswords while the rest had polished shields and spears. There was this faint scent, almost dormant and easily missed among the smell of rotten corpses and smoldering iron.

Your companion arched a beautiful smile, all the stress built up inside was gone for a brief moment "What is our plan?"

>Blast the rock above the kobolds and newts, using the chaos to rush in and end the god forsaken life of Mogaril Badodad.
>>
>>3008556
this, blast the ceiling to bury them on rocks from the cave, our barbarian gal can defend us while we do this (what a smile....if only we were younger)
>>
>>3008532
>Step 1: Push the seven kobolds advancing on us off of the platform.
Arcane barriers are interesting things. Ordinarily, they function purely as shields, but if you apply any sort of velocity to them, they become formidable plows, if not battering rams. Moving slowly, they don't do much damage on their own, but combined with environmental hazards, they can be devastating.

>Step 2: Stop the ritual.
Everything comes to naught if we have the misfortune having the ritual complete while we're still fighting Mogaril. The odds are low, but getting caught out would be disastrous.

Have Gunhild charge the chanting cultists while you act from afar. Your extensive arcane knowledge may offer you some insight into the ritual's function. Perhaps you can disrupt it, or even subvert its magics to your own ends.

If all your scholarly experience else fails, blasting them from a distance should work; if the number of chanters falls too low, they should be unable to continue the spell. There's a decent chance Mogaril didn't expect anyone to attack him right in the middle of his sanctum, and only assigned the bare minimum of required cultists to maintain his spell. If so, all the better for us.

>Step 3: Regroup.
It is unlikely Mogaril will have been sitting idly while we have been acting. Depending on what he has been doing in the meanwhile, we may find ourselves facing additional waves of enemies, traps or spells. We know Mogaril has a number of magical items and artifacts in his possession. It's too difficult to guess what we will be facing at this point; we'll have to figure it out when we get there.

At this point, there may be lulls in the battle, and we may have the opportunity to gather additional tools, weapons or equipment scattered around the platform in preparation for the final battle. If it comes, take the chance. Of note are the treasure chest, to which we may have a key, and the faint scent which may indicate a mimic.

>Step 4: Defeat Mogaril.
If we've survived to this point, the only thing remaining is to muster our strength and win the final face-off against the dragon-to-be. In his current form, he is still weakened; it's now or never!
>>

They should be dealt with at some point in steps 1 or 2; either push them off with the rest of the advancing kobolds. or take them out when we charge the cultists.

You had to deal with the most immediate threat first, the marching kobolds in clad armour. The shield stood her ground, determined to deflect any blow meant for you. The heavy armour of the kobolds should slow them down just a little. You aimed your blast to the cavern's roof. If your calculations are correct, they should be crushed before any sort of clash between you two. Mogaril Badodad watches in amusement, his two newt guards remained to his side.

The falling rocks obliterated four of the kobold guardians, the last three evaded it gracefully unaffected by the death of their comrades.

"Resorting to cheap tricks? two can play the same game my friend," The goblin gestured one of his cultist to focus on you both. After an unholy uttering, The jumble of flesh, bone, rocks and metal were sewn together to form a monstrous entity, it was crawling towards you very, very slowly. Its mangled spears aching to skewer you.

"There is no time! Go! I will deal with these corkenshal!" Gunhild blocked an incoming blow from the elite. The cocoon hasn't accepted anyone yet, though it throbs at a slower pace with only nine cultists around it.

you gain 5 coins! [sunken thirst + scent of avarice.

The newts attempted to disarm your halberd first but you managed to deflect his tongue with a last second shield, his fire breath eventually broke your fragile shield, he was the better fighter, you only managed to kill him by an up close blast which had earned you a painful slash.

You lost 10 health!
75/120

You turned your head immediately at the sound of Gunhild wincing in pain, she had already killed a newt and a kobold but her shield arm was crushed with bones protruding from her skin, a visible wound bleeds profusely from her abdomen and yet she holds her grounds.

Gunhild has lost 65 health!

"To me, you fools!" two cultists has abandoned their post to form a paling around him using their own blood, one did the same to the cocoon itself which was throbbing noticeably slower. The lonely cultist was sewing the corpses back to life at a slower rate with blood pouring from his eyes.

OVERCRIT
You gained 2 supplies! [Radiance]

Your flurry of arcane blasts has diverted the attention of the kobolds which allowed Gunhild to hack him with ease and then she threw her axe at the lone cultist before he could raise the fallen newt.

The two of you walked in unison at the panicking goblin "IGNORANT, INCOMPETENT FOOLS RGAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"

The powerful dragon soul possessing the goblin had returned to the shambling dragon bringing it back to life. while the flesh and organs were falling apart already, this undead dragon is more than formidable.

He stood in front of the cocoon, blight and poison dripping from its giant maw "YOU WILL NOT STOP MY TRUE REBIRTH, NO ONE CAN.

You heard a familiar voice amidst the chaos "Sssstupid human, The mimic queen! break the sssspell and Wake her up!" The goblin threw you a key identical to the one you had before escaping the area through a small hole in the wall.

"THE QUEEN HAS DONE HER PART, NOTHING IS POWERFUL ENOUGH TO AWAKE HER FROM HER SLUMBER."

"I...i'll hold him u-rgh off. Go..." Gunhild coughed more blood, refusing to drop her axe.

Failure

A single swipe was all it took to send you flying, you broke at least two or three ribs in the process, the rest of your body was growing numb.

You lost 55 health!
20/120

The corpse of one of the newts started to rot excessively revealing red charred bones " You are on the verge of death! How is that mortal fear bubbling up inside? I hate to see you go like so. I'll admit, i may be have plagued his little body out of boredom but that is no reason for your inadequacy. You had two more clues to collect but you barged in absolutely clueless! It is amusing to see you fail but this is not my goal."

Gunhild ignored the colossal footsteps behind her as she kept unlocking more locks with her good arm "Your friend hates everything about me, Her soul is claimed by my sister. I can only hasten the process. Now, do you wish to get on you feet, pompous scholar? It will cost you, just to retain to difficulty of our little game ?"

"I wasn't aware this was a game between us, my Lady; I had thought my only role was to entertain, to play on-stage the knight bound for triumph or tragedy. As I see it, if I can only keep you watching till the last moment, that would be my victory.

"It would be a far more unseemly performance to have me clutch desperately to life than meet death with grace. And, as you know, I am not averse to the prospect of death. So it behooves me to proceed under my own power - where would the thrill and tension be if I had you hold my hand throughout? - and see this play through to the final curtain call."

"Wise choice, please don't die this early."
You had regained all of your lost health!
You had lost all of your supplies!
You had lost all of your coin!
Your renown is now -20!

A surge of intangible vigor had returned to your body. You rose up from your momentarily defeat conjuring the largest arcane blast possible, it obliterated the dragon's left foot just in time for the wrathful mimic queen to rise from her slumber gnawing through its putrid flesh as it screaming helplessly "NO! NOOOOOO!!! THIS IS NOT MY DESTINY "

The dragon spirit attempted to possess the heartless dragon body before the ritual would be finished but alas, it two had fell to the hungry maws of the mimic queen. There was no hope for the red dragon; the cocoon along with the cultists were crushed under the queen's rampage. The kobolds one the other side had fled the area, their master was gone.

Except it wasn't, The dragon's soul lingered in the air, too weak to possess any body. It won't be long until it would dissipate on its own; nothing is bounding it to the mortal releam.

"We...did it." Gunhild crawled back to you dragging her axe along the way "Corkenshal...we killed a dragon. Almost." She instinctively tried to swing her axe at the dwindling soul with no effect.

Gunhild blinked thrice, She couldn't believe the man standing before her. The mimic queen addressed you in your new form "I..thank. You...kin."

It dropped you a magical ring but the ring of malice immediately went berserk gnawing your finger until you had to get rid of it. The queen gently cupped you both in her giant hands to lead you outside of the sprawling mines. The molten rocks didn't harm her a bit as she made climbed her way up to the surface. Your companion was in no shape for you to loot the riches inside. You left this accursed place hoping you will never delve in traitorous caverns ever again

A gauntlet of eyes formed around you and your bleeding companion upon entering the inn. The once friendly innkeeper frowned in displeasure "Yer are a rotten apple, begone from me sight. Nothing but bloody trouble."

You pleaded to stay for the sake of your companion but you felt he was pressured to take such an aggressive stance towards you. Words travel fast, you misdeeds has preceded you. You had no option but the leave this establishment.

" Down the last scrap of luck, aren't you?" A black haired man with a scruffy beard dressed in a leather outfit was waiting for you "You have some serious crimes on your tail, murdering beggars, desecrating holy shrines and engaging in unholy rituals involving children? The Scathing sun would love to have a day with you...."

Gunhild tried to raise her axe "Now, now. I am not an enemy, far from it. I belong to The thousand rats a little guild of thieves, cut throats and assassins. I started to play late but intend to be here for the next ones.

I found the dcs brutal for a tutorial but I don't know how mich of that is due to our incompetence.

And more interactions with our companions, like reactions from options or other side quedts to evolve them or trust would be cool
Nowhere inn was always nice providing some interestig interactions and i enjoyes the mimic challenge and the dragon hunt.

CLUE#3= PAY COIN TO THE DROW IN BEFUDDLED ENCOUNTER TO REVEAL MORE ABOUT THE GOBLIN SACRIFICES AND A BOOK WHICH AIDED HIM IMMENSELY.

HAVING THE THREE CLUES WOULD HAVE LEAD YOU TO A NEW ENCOUNTER WHERE YOU WOULD ACQUIRE A DRAGON SLAYING WEAPON OR A FULL MAP OF THE MINES. THE MINES ITSELF HAD PLENTY OF SECRETS.

I've briefly given my opinion in >>3002660, but I can raise a few more points of critique (that are really just elaborations on the opinion that I've already stated) when I find the time and inclination. Bear in mind that these are all purely subjective; what I look for in a game may not be what others look for.

I feel that the map itself was largely pointless. There were several factors which contributed to this:

First off, encounter selection was blind.

While there were some chances to reveal the encounters of some nodes, they were few and came at somewhat significant cost, which meant that we almost never picked them.

I'll contrast the map design here to 2 games which I've played - FTL: Faster than Light and Slay the Spire, which I personally consider to be pretty good in this regard.

FTL's map is, as yours is, almost entirely empty of indicators for what kind of encounter each node contains. Players are forced to path themselves towards an exit node, staying ahead of an expanding red zone that, for the sake of simplicity, I'll wrongly describe as containing certain death. Most nodes are combat-based, giving players a baseline of what to expect from each. But when players move adjacent to a non-default node (for instance, a store), an indicator is shown flagging the special node and its type. As nodes often connect to multiple other nodes, players can attempt to hunt for these special nodes with some success.

In contrast, Slay the Spire divides its nodes into several categories, and clearly demarcates which category each node belongs to (for instance: normal fight, elite fight and '?' room which can contain one of a selection of combat and non-combat encounters). However, players are forced to pick, as they move from node to node, which of several upward paths they are going to follow; they are restricted from visiting every node in a level because they must always continue upwards towards the boss.

The point is that it's up to you how much information you want to conceal or reveal about each node, but players must always have some decision-making process in their movement, whether about what overall strategy they want to employ or about which specific node on the map to head towards. If players pick at random, there's no skill involved; they're at the mercy of RNG as to whether they already have what they need to beat (or get the most out of) an encounter.
>>
>>3011212
Secondly, supplies were kind of weird.

At the beginning, supplies seemed tight when compared to the number of cards. This was good; it gave the feeling that we had to choose our movements carefully. We immediately headed west, because that was where we thought our goal was. We carefully counted whether we had enough to reach the witch to remove our curse, and how many more encounters we could reveal and still get to our goal without starving.

But at the end, they were overly plentiful (though this was probably mostly due to Radiance). Because of this, we could visit literally every encounter without risk of running out. Sure, they're also supposed to be backup healing items, but we never really used them. Either we were well out of risk of dying, or we just got wrecked by a single encounter anyway. So at the endgame, which is the most important point, they didn't really work as a mechanic that forced us to stop dilly-dallying and go to the goal.

If there's no mechanic stopping players from just going everywhere, they usually will. This isn't necessarily a bad thing if the order of encounters matters. But when encounters are blind, there becomes little point in having a map of cards rather than just drawing one by one from a deck. So this isn't really an issue in itself, but something which compounds the first one.

Ah, so the high dcs were oir incompetence and lack of searching for more stuff, good to know now that we left the tutorial

What would happen if we stayed in the toothless mimic mouth after losing the goat head gamble?

And the other options after we got the mother mimic key, what would they lead to?

Real talk without my meem shouting

i want to provide the chance for to experience all encounters. i played both games for 100s of hours. the problem with both map decision is that you are bound not to encounter a card. The map IS pointless because it is an over-world , only a visualization to where we are going.

i did have a plan to make the map more engaging , like a moving token just like ours or a time sensitive encounter, so we will see. As for the player's agency in walking around: i did want to keep it all hidden. After all you ENCOUNTER them, not knowning whether if they are good or bad for you. This suspense of not knowing that is up is a driving source for making choices and what not.

I agree with the bountiful supplies though, i will gimp them a bit in the next level. they lost their importance with them being oh so plentiful.

thanks again for taking your time to write this. as a horrible QM, i appreciate it

YOUR ARMOUR WOULD HAVE NO PROTECTIVE OR COIN VALUE, ONLY ITS EFFECT (+2 TO COMPANIONS) WOULD REMAIN PLUS A SMALL COMPENSATION AS A THANK YOU FROM THE OTHER MIMCS FOR SATISFYING THE OLD MIMIC

THE KEY GIVEN BY THE SMALL MIMIC WAS EXACTLY THE SAME KEY THROWN BY THE GOBLIN, BOTH WERE USED TO UNLOCK THE MAGIC ON THE MIMIC QUEEN

THERE WERE ACTUALLY FIVE METHODS TO DEAL WITH THE SUBQUEST.

>USE THE MIMIC QUEEN TO STOMP THE DRAGON

>USE THE DRAGONSLAYER WEAPON

>RECEIVE A VERY POWERFUL BLESSING IN THE SHRINE ROOM

>PEACEFULLY TALK HIM OUT OF IT USING COMPANION #2

>SNEAK UP ON HIM USING THE MAP

One other thing I feel is that we should get more choice in our rewards.

Situational bonuses mean that items will often lend themselves more to a particular playstyle. For instance, the Armour of Inspiration encourages an ally-based strategy, the Ornate Helm encourages non-combat approaches, while the Tome of Vulcaus encourages combat. Which in turn encourages players to try to optimize towards a certain playstyle depending on their initial items.

But our initial items were all extremely limited (bonus vs. illusions, bonus vs. undead; it was 6 encounters before we removed our curse and got Death's Pellet which was a 1-use-only item). Which meant that in the majority of encounters we were unwilling to risk rolling, or got dicked over when we did. The inability to succeed without being very lucky on our rolls was compounded till the end of the game. If we hadn't rolled that 20 on Gunhild, I'd wager we'd have died much sooner.

By giving us more choice in rewards, you let us gear up towards a certain strategy, which will make the game easier if players play well, but maintains difficulty if players try to do everything at once. It could be as simply as offering an additional option to choose from when finding items:
>You open the chest before you to find:
>[ ] An ornate longsword, shining with an awe-inspiring radiance (Banishes darkness; helps diplomacy but makes stealth harder).
>[ ] A suit of chain mail, its links made of a mana-conductive metal (Minor physical protection; helps offensive magic but also makes the wearer more vulnerable to it.)

I totally just ripped this off StS's card rewards.

>USE THE MIMIC QUEEN TO STOMP THE DRAGON
Didn't we try to do this? Were we actually on the verge of succeeding, but got baited into throwing away all our shit by Vaithela when we ate a bunch of damage?
>>
>>3011315
yes, this was the failsafe option and the hardest one to achieve. the goblin would have re possessed the dragon if either all/most of his guards/cultists were dead or the cocoon was prone to damage

>>3011309
i do agree with that.

I agree that there is some suspense in not knowing where you're going, but I don't think it's a good kind of suspense from the standpoint of encouraging players to consider and make good decisions.

Perhaps that isn't what you're going for, and I can respect that if that is the case. But from my point of view, even some symbols that indicate "You're likely to face combat in this encounter unless you go out of your way to avoid it." or "This is likely to be a non-combat encounter unless you go looking for it." or "idk lol could be anything" would be good, because they give players some basis for decision-making. It doesn't have to tell players whether the encounter is likely to be good or bad - ideally, all encounters have commensurate chance for gain depending on how much risk players face - but it does mean that players aren't completely fumbling around in the dark.

agreed too, sometimes it felt that there was no way to win unless we were extremely lucky.

So this is the first real level of two more levels , you can reach bot the viper and the hound at any time to kill them but it will be ALMOST impossible. it gets easier at the later levels.

Like the subquest, there are more than one way to deal with them, you will have to discover it by yourself. since it is a warzone, i was thinking of adding a level modifier , i am not sure about it.FUCKING GAYASS CAPTCHA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

On further consideration, these sentiments seem like they're at odds with each other. If you WANT players to experience each and every encounter, why have a mechanic in place that limits the number of encounters they can visit?

If you want to give players a sense of urgency while still letting them roam freely, perhaps you could have specific deadlines for certain encounters after which they change in some way. For instance:
"A civil war is ongoing in the city of Valenport to the east! Reach the indicated card within 5 encounters to join the battle and reap the rewards!"
>It's a battle encounter with chance for high loot and renown gain within those 5 turns, and a looting-the-dead non-combat encounter after.

Also, if you want to provide a limited healing mechanic, then why not give players poultices or first aid kits that are dedicated healing items? Then you can make them much rarer and more precious.

Though, I'm honestly just spitballing here. I can't promise that any of this will work in practice.
