You remember people proclaiming the death of Halloween when you were a kid, how it would be consumed by the holiday Leviathan that was Christmas just as Thanksgiving was, that growing media sensationalism over random acts of violence would make parents keep their trick or treaters home, that a world with growing populations of ghosts, werewolves, vampires, and superhumans would make Halloween too strange.

They were wrong. Halloween will never die!

And tonight you're ready to prove it.

Doorbell rings, you answer it.

You are greeted by the blood curdling awoos of...a mass of werewolf children all wearing strange masks.

Trick or Treat!

You look above the mass of wagging tails to their chaperone, a young werewolf woman with a plaid vest and curly red hair that you immediate recognize as the alpha of the local pack.

"What are they supposed to be?" You ask.

"Humans." The alpha shrugs.

"Humans?" You figured robots, or like psycho killers.

"Well hey. Kids that dress up as werewolves don't exactly look like werewolf kids, ya know?"

Fair point.

This is a precarious situation. You're facing down a small army of hungry werewolf kids.

"So...how's the night been going?" You ask the alpha.

"Pretty good, pretty good. Come midnight there's a fightin' tournament hosted by the Moonset Cafe. There's this out of town wolf named Vivian willing to take me on. I'm lookin' forward to tusslin' with her!" The alpha throws a few jabs the air.

You can't help but roll your eyes a little. Food fight, food fight, food fight, werewolves are so predictable.

But also cute.

"Good luck with your fight."

"Thanks dude. Always nice to have a tussle by the light of the silvery moon!"

"And now..." You say turning your attention to the children. "Aren't you all just the scariest humans I've ever seen!"

You notice their little plastic pumpkins and candy bags are filled with meats. Steaks and burgers an turkey legs...but also candy. All kids have candy on Halloween, even wolf kids.

You produce forth the cauldron of caramel to the eagerly sniffing noses and wide yellow eyes of tomorrow's pack leaders.

"You all can dip your meat treats in my witche's cauldron and..."

"Caramel meats!" They scream and surge forward before you or the alpha can act...

"Gee...you don't look like you have much caramel left...I'm sorry about that man."

"No, it's nothing." You say. "It was for the children, and the children certainly got it."

"Kids!" Winnie barks. "You know better than to act like that! What have we always told ya about acting in a group?"

"Always remember to act like a pack..."

"Because?"

"Because one day we will be the pack..."

"Good. Now apologize to this nice man."

"We're sorry..." The werewolf kids chorus.

"It's alright." You say. "Hope you like the caramel!"

The alpha gives you a little salute as she herds the mass of werewolf children down the street towards whatever poor house is doomed to be raided by them next.

"Hello." She says in a thickly accented voice. "My name is Dr. Frankenteen of Frankenteen industries."

"Ah. A celebrity costume!"

"...no."

"Ah...well. What can I do for you Dr. Frankenteen?"

"I are experimenting with an aetheric orgone/molecular exchanger. I would like to have you sample and/or distribute the resulting product of my latest experiment."

She holds out a metal case. With a loud hisssss of air it opens to reveal...

..peanut butter cups?

"Taste. It is safe."

You do. It is. It's...peanut butter cups.

"So...these are Reeses?"

"No."

"Well they taste exactly like them."

"That's the idea. It is a perfect molecular duplicate of a reeses peanut butter cup."

"...But its not a peanut butter cup?"

"Legally no. Legally speaking a molecular duplicate of a product is not the product. Some people laughed when I said they should copyright molecular structures...but the fools! Who is laughing now! Ahahahah!" Dr. Frankenteen shakes a fist at the sky.

"You are looking at what is legally a Frankenteen peanut butter cup, and nothing but a Frankenteen peanut butter cup."

"So...I can have them?"

"Please do." She says leaving the case on your porch. "Just tell everyone what they are. Frankenteen peanut butter cups."

As you sample another legally distinct peanut butter cup, a thunderous boom shakes you all the way in your living room.

You wonder for a moment whether or not to open the door, but you have vowed to see this trick or treating through to the end come what may.

You open the door to find a mighty jackal headed god staring down at you. His staff is tipped by ethereal green fire. His eyes are as cold as the grave. Mumified warriors with golden spears kneel at his side.

"Pay tribute to the priestess of the sun." His voice booms.

He holds out a plastic jack o lantern with Tanis written on it in black marker.

"...Okay. You know you are supposed to say trick or treat..."

The jackal headed god doesn't respond. He just stares down at you with a stare befitting the judge of the dead.

The bandaged warriors look at you expectantly, their faces completely covered by their bandages.

"Okay..." You flip a switch on the side of the legally distinct peanut butter cup maker and sure enough it generates one for you.

"...For the first offering...home made treats from the cities most...learned scholar! May the harmonious marriage of peanut butter and chocolate delight the priestess' palette!"

With a tink, you drop the treat into the plastic jack o lantern.

"Secondly, a healthy snack covered in delicious chocolate coating that is in season in the markets!"

Tink goest the second one.

"And finally, six candy corns from this revolver, to offer up a sense of joy and delight for your priestess!"

You drop a clip of six candies into the jack o lantern. You'd hate to risk shooting through it. Gods only know what would happen if you damaged it.

"Please accept these offerings and do not smite me."

The jackal headed god of death sniffs your offerings, turns to his men, and then arrests his cold eyes on you.

"The offering is...acceptable."

Suddenly a cloud of smoke appears! You cover your eyes and cough and beat away at the smoke...only to reveal a comely cat woman clad in the tattvred remains of something that...looks like it was already stitched together tatters. What's she supposed to be for Halloween?

Anyway, this was not the divine entity you were expecting.

She gives a musical laugh as she spins the jack o lantern on a finger. Her green cat eyes flash in the night.

"Treat or trick mister?" She asks with a mischievous smile. "No really. Choose. Or maybe you want me to choose? Do you like it that way?"

She brings her face...uncomfortably close to yours. You lose herself in her green eyes. You feel her whiskers on your cheek...

...and then she draws back with a haughty laugh.

"Oh...mortals are just so much fun to play with..." She says turning on her bare heels. "But thank you for the candy. I do so love this holy day..."

"What are you supposed to be by the way?" You ask as she departs.

"Oh...a mouse, if you can believe it."

"You don't look like a mouse...you look sort of like a rag doll."

"Oh she was by the time I was done with her..."

Once again there's a knock at the door and once again you open it to find a parade of floating multi colored lanterns hanging above a man in blue armor designed to look like samurai armor complete with a grinning, ghastly face mask and a female wolfperson with strange, silvery fur. Perhaps she painted it? She's dressed as a female ninja in a form fitting (and form complementing) black jumpsuit that partially obscures her face but accentuates her bright, friendly eyes.

The man in armor sands in front of the floating lanterns and raises a hand.

"And a one, and a two, and a three..."

The lanterns, which by now you have figured for a collection of those poor shapeless ghosts without enough ecto or control over their own bodies to form anything more substantial than wads of light dressed up as Japanese lanterns for Halloween, begin to softly pulse and chime.

For a minute you're treated to a performance of living, floating bells.

"Well that's something you don't see everyday!" You remark when its over. "Or hear for that matter."

"Ghost caroling." The blue samurai explains. "It's a new tradition we're trying. We're from Frankenteen's special research division."

"Oh. Are you collecting donations?"

"No. We're incredibly well of money wise." He says. "Just remember that no soul is too small to matter and to treat ghosts with respect."

"Certainly."

"And take this to remember us by." The wolf ninja says handing you a thermos charmingly designed to look like a classic sheet ghost. "A thermos, complete with home made hot cider! I made it myself!"

Your praise is answered by pleased chirping from the ghost lanterns.

"You guys want some uh, Halloween candy? I don't have much for the spiritually enhanced I'm afraid, but maybe you two would appreciate something?"

"Oh thank you!" The ninja wolf says. "They appreciate the thought! But we're good. Special research has been filled with candy this year."

"Yeah I can imagine. Your boss actually came by earlier and gave me this case that makes uh..."

"Legally distinct treats?" The man in the armor asks.

"Yep."

"I knew she was handing them out in this area. You're not the first we've run into that has one." He says. "Just don't try and modify it in any way. Guy down the block tried that and now it only makes radishes for some reason."

"Oh believe me, I'm not ready to make this night any stranger for me than its already been! But thanks for coming around guys. I hope this ghost caroling thing works out for you , I'd love to see it again next year!"

Ding dong goes the doorbell.

You'll feeling pretty confident this time answering the door. The ghost carolers were a nice surprise.

You open the door to see a short woman with a bandaged face, coat, and black glasses.

"Oh, you're the Invisible Woman?"

She nods. "Yes. I go as it every year."

"Really?"

"It's easy for me to put on. Anyways, I hate to bother you but...have you happened to see a cat anywhere?"

"A cat? Oh...you've lost your cat, I'm sorry!"

"It's no big deal, she gets out all the time. It's just that she's rather mischievous and I don't want her causing problems for anyone tonight. She thinks the holiday gives her free reign to do whatever she likes..."

"What's your name?"

"Oh? My name is Tanis."

You think you might have seen her cat...

You wonder for a moment if you shouldn't rat her out...but that cat goddess sure was cute...

"No. Sorry, I haven't seen a cat. Maybe she was frightened off by that jackal headed guy walking around here earlier?"

"Oh no..." She gasps. "He's out here making trouble to? And here I told him to play nice..."

"Would you happen to want any candy by the way? I have a pretty sizable collection I want to get rid of before the night's over."

"Oh, thank you but no thank you. You see I have these friends of mine who think really highly of me and ever since I was a girl they've been uh...doing the trick or treating for me. Come midnight I'm going to have a giant pile of candy. They think its their uh...duty to gather tribute for me...sorry if that sounds a little weird..."

"No problem at all! Tonight's the night for things to be a little weird."

"Well...how about I make up for wasting your trick or treat time with a little tricky treat?" With a wave of her hand Tanis produces a red wraps of cherry scented candy that write on her hand.

"Uh...what are they?" You ask.

"Twizzlers!" She says. "Twizzlers that move!"

"Are they...alive?"

"No silly! Just animated through magic." She peels a small rope away and eats it. "See? It's fine."

"Well thank you. I'm sure they'll be a big hit this year." You accept the candy and add it to your arsenal.

How did it come that you've ended up with more candy than when you started? Oh, what a night!

>You got: Moving Twizzlers!

"Bye!" Tanis says as she leaves. "Oh...now where are you Bast? You're such a mischievous goddess..."

"Let this be a message that I'm Boss of Halloween, capeesh?"

You fire off candy corn into her bag. Six shots land with little plink sounds.

You smirk at her. "Trick and treat."

You notice the catlady's ears fall off revealing rather canine looking ears. And as a swarm of glowing ghosts fly over her shoulders you notice that the cat markings on her face are painted on. Why she isn't a cat at all, she's a wolf!

The gangster part was the honest part of her costume.

The ghosts were clearly trained for this. One blocks your vision while the others go for the goods. They manage to cart away a few chocolate bananas before you close the door on them, but for the most part you're able to keep your candy safe for more honest trick or treaters.

A single ghost gets stuck behind the door and tries to make off with your thermos of cider only to lose it when it doesn't go through the door like he does. He phases back through the door to angrily buzz like a siren in your face before phasing through the door again.

"Ahahahaha! Later sucker!" the wolfgirl says as she hurries down the street with her ghost crew.

You manage to take note of how she looks without her cat disguise though, and make a note to tell the local alpha about this...

"Darn kids! I'll remember your costume!" You shout to the fleeing mob.
Oh well. You're sure that they're enjoying your candy either way.

Another knock at the door and you're greeted by a hearty "Trick or Treat!" from a mob of small children all dressed up as superheroes. You have little Apache Chief and white Black Vulcans and Samurais with foam swords. They're being chaperoned by lower profile ut real superheroes. You recognize them from that big Dracula incident a year ago. The one in the armor is Black Falcon, the guy in the demolitions gear is Benny the Bomber, and the one next to him is Voodoo Doll the catlady.

Huh. She's wearing sort of the same thing as Bast except less torn up. Is it some kind of catlady fashion?

"Hey there civilian." Benny the Bomber says. "Super trick or treat for charity?"

"It's for the Radley Crown foundation." Black Falcon explains. "To help people with uh...difficult powers find a way to use them productively."

"Me and Voodoo Doll are products of that foundation." Benny says looping an arm around her. "So you know it works."

You'd certainly donate, but right now you got to worry about the mass of hungry kids assembled at your door!

"Now for heroes young and old tonight, we have some uh...generic puppet butter cups courtesy of Frankenteen Industries."

"Ah, you too?" Benny asks. "Third house we've been to with them. I guess they're pretty popular. They taste just like Reeses though, I wonder what the difference is."

"Some sort of legal distinction I'm sure." You say. "We also got choco nanas in case any of you have allergies, and those really cool moving twizzlers!" You show off the snake like twizzler pieces to the audience children who squeal with ghoulish delight as you bite one of them to show them that they're okay.

Black Falcon runs a light over them from his armored palm. "Just having my C.A.T. scan it." He says. "Basic protocal for any ecto enhanced object be it trick or treat."

"Alright." He says powering down the scanner. "The C.A.T says its safe and delicious. Also, Happy Halloween."

The children give an uproarious YAY!!!!!

"And don't forget, hot cider for the crisp autumn night!"

There are more YAYS.

You're running a little low on candy corn, but you offer some anyway. It's for the children.

You feel just like a hero yourself as they walk away with a decently sized haul of goodies.

Candy Corn: Low

Reeses: Infinite
Choco Nanas: OK

"Pretty good. A guy dressed as a mummy says. "Lot of candy!"

"Well I hope you're ready for even more candy!"

The children cheer.

"We have...peanut butter cups!"

There's a low groan of disappointment along several "agains?"

How many houses did Dr. Frankenteen hit up?

"Well, if that doesn't interest you then how about....Hisslers!"

If this was one of those fights whoever you'd be playing as would have stomped her opponent harder than Bast stomped the mouse formerly known as Char.

They seem to really like your hisslers.
Really, really like your hisslers!

They delight in how they can become edible bracelets, neckties, mummy wrappings, giant frog tongues, all sorts of things for their Halloween hijinks.

"Wow! Thanks mister!" The salty seadog says. "These are great! Where did you get them!"

"Oh they were homemade."

"You one of those magic guys that use ecto?"

"Naw, but I know some people like that."

The kids wish you a happy Halloweem as they skip on down the street with their Hisslers. There's no doubt that they'll show mercy on your house and leave it egg and toilet paper free. If anything they'd tell their friends to leave your place be.

You take the opportunity to call in some candy reserves courtesy of the ghost express. There's little you can do to replicated the Hisslers as those were ecto spawned by a mysterious bandaged woman at your doorstep (isn't Halloween great?) but your cider and candy corn and choco nanas are all maxed out!

You give a generous tip to the company colored balls of light that drop your candy off. Ball ghosts don't have the easiest after lives. It's glad to see so many out and about today from the ghost carolers to even those mischievous pranksters with the wolf girl that ran off with some of your goods. Its better than having them wallow in ruins and dark corners.

Another doorbell, another encounter.

It's a werewolf guy in a police uniform.

"Oh. Going as a policeman this Halloween?" You ask.

"Actually no sir." He says. "Officer Jack Bisclavret." He flips out his badge and identification.

"Oh. What can I do you for officer?"

"It's nothing pressing, its just its Halloween and we have the weirdest things to look out for. It's probably not even real but...have you happened to see a...an egyptian god walking around with a jackal head? Sometimes there's a cat walking around the area near him?"

Wait a sec. "Bisclavret?" Ah crap, not only is he a cop but he's related to the local alpha. Maybe he's her brother or something.

Werewolf cops are cool, you don't want to lie to them. They're also pretty darn powerful especially with ties to the alpha. You don't want to spend Halloween handing out candy to inmates.

But...that cat lady was hot as hell. And probably a goddess or a wizard or something. You don't want to ruin your chances with her...I mean piss her off...I mean piss her off AND ruin your chances with her...

Decisions, decisions...

You decide to try a little of both.

"Well...I did encounter..Anubis I think he is?"

"Yeah that's the guy. Lots of mummy warriors?"

"Yeah that's him. I saw him a little while ago. I offered him some uh, Frankenteen peanut butter cups..."

You hold up the strange case like machine that molecularly assembles candy out of thin air.

"Ah. So you've got one to."

"Any uh...problems with it officer?"

"Naw. Not if you don't mess with it. Guy a few blocks over created an acidic blob monster trying to get it to mas produce lemonheads. Super Friends took care of it."

"Really?"

"Yes really. You'll probably hear about it on the news later. Hell of a holiday isn't it?"

"That it is. But uh, I was talking about the legality of the device..."

"Hey don't ask me." Officer Jack shrugs. "I just enforce the law. You'd want to ask a lawyer about that. Far as I can tell its legal, but like I said I'm just a cop. But you have seen our trouble making deity right?"

"I'm not going to have to come down to the station to make a statement am I?'

"No no no. Nothing like that. Just tell me about how long ago you saw him?"

"Couldn't have been more than an hour ago. Besides the peanut butter cups I offered him some candy corn and chocolate covered bananas. It seemed like he just wanted to uh...trick or treat."

"Well those are gods for you. Crazy piles of crazy. Did you happen to see a cat with him?"

"I've seen a catwoman earlier. She was part of the Radley Crown Foundation doing a charity trick or treat thing. Rag doll I think her handle was?"

"That's Char. Voodoo Doll. And no, believe you me a sweet girl like her would have nothing to do with out of control gods. Besides I'm talking about a cat...cat. The four legged kind."

"Oh. No, haven't seen one out lately."

"Well. Thank you for your cooperation citizen." Officer Jack tips his hat to you. "And happy halloween....can I have a choco nana?"

"You sure can sir."

"Hmmm...that's weird man. Like weird." The pizza dude scratches his head. "You sureeee you didn't order 12 X Large St. Florian's Papalroni? Because that's what it like, says on the order form and everything..."

Oh no.

Oh no no no no no.

Who would possibly dare? You've had nothing but happy customers the whole night. Who would...
