You didn’t dream.

It’s a shame. You’d actually like to dream just for a minute to get out of this place. But alas, maybe the stress is starting to get to you. You open your eyes and sniff the air. Back in the Command truck on one of the bunks. Smells like coffee. “… yeah ha. That tastes good,” says someone. You sit up and nearly bang your head on the bunk above you. You lean out and see Graves in a chair next to one of the bunks. Morrison. Graves gently spoons some coffee into Morrison’s mouth as he sits up in his bed. You lean over and grin. “Mmm, thanks, babe,” says Morrison.

“Don’t call me, babe, xeno-lover,” says Graves as she places the coffee to the side. You step off of your bunk and look over, grinning at him. “Well, well, Daddy. I see someone’s at full mast.” You roll your eyes, stepping up to the two of them. “As you can see, Morrison is starting to recover.”

“How are you doing?” asks Morrison. His voice is a little patchy, but his tired smile definitely radiates some hidden energy within. “Graves was just letting me know about everything that’s happened so far. We finally found Cope?” You nod. “Goddamn. That’s great. I’d love to say hi to him once he’s available.”

“I’ll see about him summoning him,” says Graves. “All I’ll need to do is tell him I’ll give him a blowjob in the showers or something. Which by the way, Daddy, I’m always up for.” You shake your head. “Just saying. Anyway. Morrison. Bed rest. I don’t want you out of this bunk for any reason unless your life is danger.”

“Does having an infection count?” asks Morrison with a smirk.

“Oh, ha, ha. Nearly getting ripped to shreds and developing an infection has suddenly turned you into a smart-ass,” says Graves. “God, I hate smartasses. Don’t you, Daddy?” Yeah. You can’t imagine having to hang out with someone who constantly makes sneering remarks and jokes about everything. You’d have probably shot them by now. “Anyway, Morrison. Bed rest. You can talk and see straight at least but you’re going to need a few days before you can actually do things. So lie back down.”

Morrison sighs, resting his head on a pillow. “Thank you, Graves.” He looks to you. “It’s good to see you.”

“Good to see you recovering.” Seeing him like that is putting you at more ease now at least. Hopefully he’ll be ready to move in another day or so.

Wexley leans over from his bunk. “Hey, how come I don’t gets any friendly banter?”

“I’ll tend to you in a minute, Wexley,” says Graves as she pulls on some sterile gloves from her pack.

Wexley frowns, tilting his head as he holds his shoulder. “So… you serious about that-“

“Gee. What do you think?” asks Graves. Wexley silences himself, looking down at the floor. Graves looks at you. “Honestly, Daddy. See what I have to work with?” Graves stands up out of her chair and walks over to Wexley.

“Did anything happen while I was out? What time is it?” you ask.

Graves says, “A little past lunch time.” Your stomach agrees, rumbling a little. “Lieutenant Harrell wanted to see if you he had a minute. Said he wanted you to go looking for one of those Q-Birds. Apparently he’s been ‘tracking’ them since last night. Says one of them apparently didn’t make it back to the nest. Stoakes too wanted to talk to you as well. Frak if I know what she wants.” Stoakes? What does Stoakes want? She looks at you, seeing your confused expression. “Seriously, I have no frakking clue what she wants. For all I know, maybe she’s fallen in love with you. Or maybe she wants your manly advice on how to conquer Tombs.” You tilt your head. “Seriously, you didn’t notice how Tombs goes sploosh every time Tombs walks past her? It’s actually kind of obvious.”

Well. On the one hand, it’s nice that Tombs might make a friend. On the other hand…

“Anyway. Burke too was pacing around with Tierney,” says Graves. “I think Burke is raring to go. Apparently Cope let her in on the deal with scouting ahead for the group. So maybe find her I guess.”

Oh well.

> Go see Lieutenant Harrell about what he wants. A dead Quetzalcoatlus can mean a lot out here.
> Go see Stoakes. You’ve never actually talked to her at length, so may as well.

Welcome back to No One Gets Left Behind. On the last episode, we captured and (somewhat) tamed a wounded Stenonychosaurus which is currently residing beneath the Command truck. You've also rallied with Sergeant Cope, who's colliding with Lieutenant Harrell's command over the group.

Sergeant Cope recently requested that you scout potential other locations for the group to move to.

Previous threads are here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?searchall=No+One+Gets+Left+Behind

We use the dice roll system from Banished, at the 3d10 parts here: https://pastebin.com/nhswziq6

As per usual, this will update once I get back from work tomorrow. So go ahead and leave your votes in overnight and I shall return.
If you also got questions, go ahead and ask and I shall answer. At some point.

You step out of the Command truck then lean over and check underneath the bottom. You find the Steno putting out a piece of bread into the open that someone threw to it apparently. It then goes back to… reassembling your watch? Huh. Weird. You’re not sure how it can even do that, but oh well. It uses its own claws and a few small stiff sticks to do the job. But you’re not sure how it’s even doing it.

Right. Just go to Lieutenant Harrell and see what he wants first. Then you can worry about your watch later.

You find Lieutenant Harrell scanning the skies atop the fallen tree. Joffrey sits down next to him, guarding him with a rifle in his lap. Joffrey gives you a very intense glare, then nudges Lieutenant Harrell. Oh God, Joffrey please. You were not responsible for Burke’s actions. Lieutenant Harrell turns around and looks down. “Oh, Corporal. Good to see you. I trust you had a nice nap?” You nod. Not much else to say. “I assume Graves has filled you in.”

“Something about the Quetzalcoatlus?” you ask.

He nods, dropping down on the ground next to you. “I was tracking them visually during the night to see where they were going. I noticed one of them didn’t make it back to the hill. Out of two. Seems death has did them apart if you understand me.” You shrug. Could mean anything. It could just be wounded or sleeping up in a tree somewhere. “I want you to go and try and account for that missing Quetzalcoatlus. I don’t like not knowing where it may be at any given time. For all we know, it could be circling us right now and we may never even know.”

“Do you have any leads, sir?” you ask.

He pauses, then sighs. “… not at this moment. But. Given your skill at tracking, I’d figure you could work something out.”

>>
> “I’ll see if I can get around to it.”

“I’ll see if I can get around to it, sir.” Lieutenant Harrell’s request isn’t that unreasonable. But it’d really help if he had some kind of reference. Smell, scat, tracks, anything. It’s not like hunting ducks. This is a giant Lizard bird thing that’s the size of a building. Granted, they’re not hard to miss, but they’re hard to find in the first place. Still. You can’t just tell him no. And besides, you can probably get around to scouting for new locations while you’re at it as well.

Lieutenant Harrell smiles. “Good, Corporal. I’ll stay here at camp. Let me know as soon as possible the fate of that Quetzalcoatlus.” You nod, then turn around and take your leave.

You sigh. Already off to a wonderful start today. You look over and see Tierney kneeling down by the truck with Burke, watching the Stenonychosaurus. You stop and look. You notice that bread the Steno left out is now being pecked at by a Compsognathus. It chews and pecks at the breads, apparently oblivious to the Steno slowly creeping out from under the truck.

Swiftly, the Compy disappears into the Steno’s jaws. It struggles for a few seconds before the Steno bites down. Then it starts chewing as it works on your watch. Huh. Used one piece of food to claim a bigger piece of food. Interesting. Tierney though looks shocked by this display of intelligence. “I-… That’s amazing!”

Burke says, “That’s basic hunting. Bait them out.” You look over and see Godwin, Connell, Hood, and Grimshaw cutting down some wood branches and small saplings on the south end. Seems like they’re gathering some resources.

“Why are we just chopping down trees?” asks Connell.

“For wood, dumbass, we gotta make barricades and shit,” says Hood. “We also need wood for the fires.”

Grimshaw snorts. “I don’t see why we can’t just let Godwin’s flamethrower do the work for us. It’d be a squeeze and boom, we got it.”

“Sounds like your Friday nights, goddamn,” says Connell. Hood chortles quietly. Grimshaw grunts, clearly not amused by that remark. “Aw, come on, Grim. You know you love it.” Tombs walks up, carrying two buckets of water. “Aw boy, here’s the water boy!” Tombs sets down the buckets. And the four men quickly drop what they’re doing to refill their canteens. “Thanks, Tombs!”

“Yeah, thanks, tough guy,” says Godwin. Godwin fills up his canteen, looking at Tombs. “You know. You’re pretty quiet.”

Connell says, “Not as quiet as Early that’s for sure.”

Tombs says, “I’m not one for conversation if I don’t have anything to say.”

“Welp.” Connell smirks, patting Tombs’ arm. “There’s your answer, Goddy.” Connell goes back to chopping wood. Godwin though still keeps staring at Tombs, sizing him up and down.

Godwin sneers a little. “You know, I noticed Stoakes gives you that look. You notice that, right?”

“I did,” Tombs says, picking the buckets up. “I’m flattered. But I’m spoken for.”

“Oh?” Godwin, Connell, Grimshaw, and Hood stop and look over, now suddenly curious. Godwin steps up. “Spoken for? Who is it, is it Graves? She is a good catch. But, the way she talks, seems like she’s got a black hole for a snatch if you ask me.” Tombs places his hands on his belt. “Come on, is it her? What’s she like?”

“No.” Godwin smirks, now much more curious too. “God.”

“… God?” Godwin chuckles a little. The other men start laughing too. Then after a few seconds, they see Tombs’ stone-cold expression of complete utter faith. They stop laughing.

“Yeah.” Tombs nods, completely serious. “God.”

“Welp.” Connell quickly goes back to chopping wood. As do the others. Godwin though stares at Tombs, clearly not amused by that.

Godwin huffs, stepping back. “Alrighty, Mr. Crazy. So you talk to God. What does he tell you? How handsome I am?”

“All kinds of things about all kinds of people,” Tombs says firmly. “Especially sinners like yourself.” Godwin nods slowly. “Don’t worry. He doesn’t speak much of you. Some people I guess he just leaves to fate.” Tombs steps back, then takes his leave back to the Command truck.

“… dumbass. ‘Talking to God’.” Godwin mutters as he goes back to chopping wood with his machete.

Yeah, for sure there's something iffy going on with the Sergeant. Either he had a hand in the loss of the naval communication device or it didn't exist in the first place. I think it was mentioned somewhere about how if they live on the planet for long enough before the Dominion steamrolls it they get land, so he may be going for that.

You manage to catch Tombs before he gets inside. “Tombs. Do me a favor.” He looks to you, nodding. “Watch the Steno for me.” He nods, stepping past you and taking a seat on the ground to look at it. The Steno sniffs at a tiny rice-grain sized gear. It accidentally inhales it into its nostril. It starts shaking its head, before forcibly sneezing and exhaling through its nose to expel it from its nostrils. Okay. Maybe asking Tombs to watch the Steno is overkill. It’s clearly having too much fun to do anything harmful.

Still. May as well. Before you go though, you decide to find Stoakes. You see her wiping her hands with a wet wipe outside one of the tents, sighing as she leans against the fallen tree. “Stoakes.” She looks at you, smiling. “Graves said you wanted to talk to me?”

“Yeah, yeah.” She discards the wet wipe and says, “So uh.” She pauses, her hands behind her back. “How do you know Tombs? What’s he like?”

Oh. It’s this. “Well, I picked him up in a Medevac.” Stoakes nods, listening attentively. “He was the sole survivor.” She nods again, still attentive. “He gave pain-stop to all of the wounded inside and let them be eaten alive because he couldn’t move them to a safer location.” Stoakes hesitates, then nods slowly. “And he hid in a locker. And he also talks to God apparently. That last part, I don’t think that’s entirely a bad thing. And he’s probably kidding anyway. I mean…” You turn around and look at Tombs.

You can see him talking, whispering to himself indistinctly as he stares at the Steno. The Steno glances at him, then scoots away slightly under the truck before going back to work on your watch.

“Yeah,” you say. “Just… why do you ask?”

Stoakes rubs her chin, thinking slightly. “I mean. Aside from all that. Tombs is quite handsome.” She blushes a little, swirling her finger through some locks of her hair. “I don’t mean to sound like a little schoolgirl or nothing. I just think he’s handsome, that’s all and um… I was wondering if he was single.”

You blink. Trapped on a planet full of flesh eating gun toting Lizards and this is the thing she’s concerned with. You suppose you can’t –stop- her from having those thoughts, you’re no Gene therapist. “Um. Stoakes.” You place your hand on your belt, shrugging. “I mean, as far as I know, he doesn’t talk about people at home and he certainly doesn’t show any interest in the people around him. So, I guess he is.” Stoakes grins, twiddling her fingers. “Just, can I ask you something?”

“Go ahead,” she says.

“Why exactly is him being single so important anyway?” you ask.

“Well, monogamous relations, you know?” she says. Of course. “Plus. I mean, I like a fixer upper I guess.”

“… Tombs is a fixer upper.” Stoakes astounds you with how much she’s understated Tombs’ condition.

[1/2]
>>
>>3051699
[2/2]

“Okay, I know you laid out the whole thing, I know Graves also told me he’s seen some shit,” says Stoakes. “But, I don’t want him to feel like he’s ostracized just because he talks to God and he did that-… that stuff with the Medevac. He deserves as much respect as anyone else in this camp. And… by God, he’s got strong looking arms, don’t you think?” Stoakes frowns, thirsty in more ways than one. You roll your eyes. “Sorry, I’m just- um… I don’t mean to be immature. I just feel like maybe he could use a little extra company that’s all. And sometimes.” She sighs. “Sometimes… well, when things break, they break into all kinds of little pieces. And you’re never gonna get the same thing from it if you try to put it back together. But with a helping hand and maybe a little love, you can make something new, you know?”

You stare at Stoakes. That is disgustingly naïve but incredibly insightful at the same time. “Well, Stoakes. I won’t stop you if you want to pursue relations with Tombs. But I encourage you to take things slow and just make him feel welcome first. He’s been through a lot. Last thing he needs is relationship drama. And the last thing we need is mindless sex right now. Everyone has to be on their guard.”

“Don’t worry. I’m an easy girl,” says Stoakes. You blink. “I mean- that- that’s. I mean, I’m easygoing! Not easy, easy, like Graves. Not to imply that she’s easy or anything-“

Nielson steps past, holding a tool kit. “She’s had like seven boyfriends, she’s told us.” Stoakes pauses, clearly confused.

Stoakes sighs, then smiles. “Thanks.” You nod. “And hey, if you ever need an extra gun or somebody to talk to, I’m right here for you.” You nod, turning around. “Oh! By the way!” Stoakes steps up and says quickly to you, “I just want to thank you for getting us out of that fiasco with the Spinosaurus. I don’t think any of us have thanked you properly actually. I mean, Lieutenant Farrell and Joffrey are prideful, Horner and Bakker well… they’re Horner and Bakker. Godwin’s a creep too. But, I just want you to know I appreciate what you’ve done.”

She then hugs you.

“Um. Thanks.” She steps back, letting go, grinning happily at you. You sheepishly rub the back of your neck. Well. You’ll just be going now. Stoakes waves goodbye as you go over to Burke and Tierney preparing their weapons.

Burke looks to you. “Does Graves know you’re cheating on her with Stoakes?”

“Piss off,” you say quickly. She clips her machete scabbard to her belt then charges her DMR. “Tierney, you’re coming with us.”

“Oh? Okay! I’ll do my best!” Tierney nods, holding her rifle in her hands steadily. “Where are we going?”

The three of you leave camp, going northbound. You take a look at the map as you go along. Judging by the look of the map, the foliage up there is so dense and so heavy that terrain features up there are masked. Unfortunately, there are no hills or anything in that direction either. So it’s all flat lands, just covered in trees and small streams and ponds. As you walk, Tierney takes up the rear. “So we’re looking for a new place to set up camp?”

“Possibly,” you say. “Question is how we’ll do it in this terrain. It’ll probably get a little too thick for the vehicles.” Your big fear so far is losing that shower. You’ll sacrifice anything to have that shower functional permanently. “Big thing we have to consider is that we may need a fall back point and Hill 47 may not be it. Seeing as how it’s the home to Quetzalcoatlus.”

“Fair.” Tierney frowns, her rifle slung behind her arm. Burke follows behind you as well, keeping ahead of Tierney. Tierney still however insists on talking. Given you’re out of earshot of the camp now, you’ll allow it. “You know, I thought we’d be looking for the transmitter by now.”

“So did I,” says Burke. “But instead we’re looking for new loveholes apparently.” Burke, please. “You know, boo. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say Sergeant Cope deliberately lost the transmitter.” What? You turn around, confused and shocked. “There’s no real rhyme or reason to it. Any decent Commander would understand how important that thing is to actually communicating upstairs. I know you’ve heard this already but it needs to be said. I don’t trust him.”

“You have a problem with authority anyway,” you say back. “Besides, he hasn’t given us any reason not to trust him. He’s been on the level so far.”

With a sigh, Tierney frowns. “Yeah but…” She looks up and around. “You’d think the Dominion would’ve sent scoutcraft at least to examine the surface. Something to see what’s going down here. They must know we’re here. We’ve been here a week almost and nothing’s came down from the Fleet to scout or investigate.” That is true. But this is a big planet. Maybe they intend on invading somewhere where there’s less Lizards and more open space to set up. “You don’t think they’ve just abandoned us down here, have they?”
>>
>>3051881
[2/2]

“I should hope not,” you say. Quietly, you really do hope they haven’t. You did not enlist in the Army to die on some godforsaken rock parsecs away from home. And you certainly did not enlist either to be abandoned by your own comrades in arms. Rake is dead, sure. But the rest of your squad? Probably already yucking it up back on the ship. Filthy bastards.

Burke looks back at Tierney. “I assume they have.” You sigh. Burke. Tierney starts slowing in her step, a very sorrowful look on her face. “Hope is the first step on a very long road to disappointment, Tierney. Better to assume the worst than the best. The worst never surprises you.”

“Y-… Yeah.” Tierney looks away, her hands resting in her pockets as she marches. There’s a very stunning pause between the three of you. No one wants to talk about potentially being left behind. No one wants to talk about home if they understand that they might not see it again. Or their families, or their pets, or their sweethearts. Tierney quickly steps past Burke then saunters up next to you. “Um. You know. I don’t think you ever actually told anybody your name.”

You have. Didn’t you?

Burke says, “His name’s Boo. Get over it.

Tierney tilts her head. “Seriously, what’s your name?”

“At this point, I don’t think it really matters. Just call me whatever.” Tierney stares at you for a few seconds as you walk, clearly confused. Most people would respond by actually saying their name. But given how much everyone else seems intent on actually not asking what your name is, it probably doesn’t matter too much anyway. You look down at her. “I mean, if we get outta here. I’ll let you know. How’s that something to work for?”

Tierney continues to stare at you, very clearly confused.

Burke nudges you a little. “He’s flirting with you.” What. What!? You turn to look at her. Burke shrugs. You can’t tell if she’s serious about that or not.

“Ah, Burke!” Tierney giggles a little, some pink coloring her cheeks. “She’s just being silly, I think.” She gently slaps your arm. “Hehe. Silly. Just-… yeah. I guess I’ll ask another time maybe. Or I could just sneak in while you’re sleeping and look at your dogtags.”

“Oh, that would require actually sneaking up on me,” you say. “I’m not the type that lets that happen.” Tierney looks back at Burke. Burke makes air quotes with her fingers, rolling her eyes. Tierney chortles quietly, looking ahead and down.

The laughter stops however as a smell quickly assaults your nose. You all stop and see stakes in the ground like the ones at the river. Like the ones at the river, they had strips of greyish leather hanging from them, with yellow and brownish circles with X crossed through them. Seems you’re leaving restricted territory. The three of you press on. Tierney gives one last look at the stakes before following the two of you again. Whatever is on this side of the river will hopefully be weak enough that your Carbine can kill them quickly.

You just have to have some faith. After all, you’re surrounded by relatively competent people.

After walking somewhere in the area of a whole kilometer, you come to your first obstacle. A stream had cut a deep but relatively narrow gully through the woods. It was deep enough that your head wouldn’t stick out if you were standing in it. It was wide enough that jumping across though was a somewhat risky endeavor. Not for Burke. She got a running start then leapt across with plenty of room to spare. “Throw me your weapons,” she says. You nod, tossing her your Carbine. She takes it, then sets it down. Tierney tosses hers as well. “Alright, Tierney first.”

[1/2]
>>
>>3052486
[2/2]

Tierney takes a breath, stepping back. She sprints forward then jumps. She lands right on the edge. But Burke grabs her hand. “Got you,” she says. Tierney pants heavily, apparently panicking a little. “Alright, Boo. You too. Come on.”

You nod, then hurry and leap across. You too almost land on the edge, but Burke and Tierney grab your hands and pull you to them. “Alright.” Burke looks around, handing your Carbine back to you. Tierney holds her hands out for her rifle, but Burke quickly steps past and takes some binoculars to scan the environment. You roll your eyes, then pick up Tierney’s rifle and hand it back to her. Rude, Burke. Very rude. Tierney frowns, looking back and taking watch. Burke says, “Not too many clearings here. And what little there are, they’re flooded.”

“I mean, we could always turn the 6x6 into a house boat,” you say. “I always wanted to live in one.”

“Very funny,” Burke says. “We can’t settle in flooded areas. When it rains, it’ll flood harder and drown us.” Fair point. “And besides, up here, the trees and roots are so thick that the vehicles are going to have a hard time moving.” You did notice that the trees around you were quite wide, with their roots reaching out for any source of moisture in the ground. They overlapped and barely left any ground to actually walk on. Meant your feet were being beaten by bark and plant rather than dirt and mud. It also means no tracks at least. The ground’s too hard to leave noticeable ones.

You hear a noise ahead. Everyone freezes. It’s a long whimpering noise. Like a wounded animal.

It does sound like a wounded animal! Tierney looks at you two. Burke nods and starts forward. You and Tierney follow behind her.

You don’t get too far before seeing what was making the noise.

The rear half of a Retrieval Boat had crashed down, flipped over, and knocked over a large dead tree. The tree in turn apparently collapsed down on an unsuspecting Hadrosaur, a Parasaurolophus. The Parasaurolophus lies on its side, continuously moaning for help it seems. It’s brown skin shudders a little as the Parasaurolophus breathes laboriously. Its tongue too lies on the ground, sticking out from its mouth. Tierney covers her mouth, shocked to her core. “Oh, the poor thing, it’s trapped!”

Burke steps up to it. “Don’t worry, this will take a second.” She quickly moves to shoot it in the head.

“Wait!” Tierney runs up. “Maybe we can help it!” Burke stares at Tierney as she runs up to the tree. She slings her rifle, then starts pushing and shoving against it. To her credit, even with the tree’s size, she’s actually making it move slightly. Though, you’re not sure if you want to spend the effort trying to rescue something that’s…

That probably should’ve died days ago if this crashed down the day of the retreat. How is it still alive?

“Burke, hold your fire. I’m going to scout the area first.” She looks at you, clearly not impressed by your show of so-called mercy for the animal. But you’re not just going to shatter Tierney’s wide-eyed love for it just yet. You agree with Burke, best idea is often to just put it out of its misery and leave it. It’s not like this is a deer stuck between two trees, this is a Parasaurolophus stuck beneath a fallen tree. Best to at least make sure the area is clear.

After all, something is off about this. Any animal this size would’ve starved to death ages ago. Burke sighs, standing around. Tierney meanwhile keeps trying to push the tree up to free it. The Parasaurolophus shudders, weakly trying to wrestle itself free. You sigh, walking around. First off, the section from the Retrieval Boat. The front half is missing unfortunately. Perhaps it was completely destroyed or perhaps it’s off somewhere in this dense jungle. Either way, all you see before is the rear half. It’s flipped over. Around the edges were jagged tears and rips in the metal, probably an internal explosion judging by how outwardly they stick out. Inside is the skeletal corpse of a soldier, still trapped in his seat. A pair of Compsognathuses peck and prod at it for what meat is left.

You shoo them away, then take the dogtags.

> PFC. H. HOWELL – 603.235.34HH

You place the tags in your belt pouch then check him over. However, it seems the heat sealed his harness into the seat. Looks like he got trapped and wasn’t able to free himself. Not a way you’d like to go. Though you do notice a crate at your feet on the ceiling (or floor, it’s upside down). You open the crate and check inside.

Inside is a Type 66 Phased Plasma Pulse Cannon.

> TYPE 66 PHASED PLASMA PULSE CANNON
> With Type 68 Tri-Gun slowly reaching obsolescence, the Type 66 was commissioned as a way to bring heavy firepower to the squad level while being man-portable enough for one man to carry both ammo, bracing rig, and weapon at the same time. The Type 66 PPP Cannon fires a spray of plasma projectiles at a rate of 1,500 RPM and is effective at ranges the standard infantry rifle can fire at.

> To increase portability, a power harness is worn on the arms and back, allowing the user to wield the weapon and the backpack powerpack all in one. This harness not only allows the user to carry the relatively heavy weapon around, but also allow them to shoulder it for accurate suppressive fire and absorb its recoil as well. The weapon also comes with a bipod mounted on the barrel for defensive emplacement duties. When wielded in conjuction with the backpack powerpack, it can fire continuously and melt its barrel before the powerpack runs out of energy.

> Replacement barrels are also provided. To change the barrel, simply undo the latch on the barrel cowl, pull to the side, pull the used barrel out, replace barrel, close and relatch.
>>
>>3052637
[2/2]

Hm. It comes with the harness and two replacement barrels as well. Tierney might like this. But for now, you drag it over to Burke. You continue to scout the area until you hear some bushes rustling.

Wait. You look to the south.

Popping its head out was a Deinonychus. It had red face paint on its snout, along with the dark purple tiger stripe marks on its body and beneath its leather harness on its back. It stares at you. Burke turns around then quickly aims her DMR at it. The Deinonychus hisses, clicking its teeth as it marches forward, confidently, unafraid, and…

Carrying a basket of yellow fruit in its hands. On its leather harness was two satchels bound to its side. The Deinonychus stops in a bush, staring at the two of you.

Uh. You look over to the Parasaurolophus. Two and two comes together quite quickly. Tierney stops, then turns around too. The Deino sniffs the air, looking at the Parasaurolophus, then at Tierney, then at you.

> Okay. Just step to the side and let the Deino do its thing.

It stares at the three of you before advancing forward. Tierney quickly steps to the side. It hisses at her, making her stiffen up and curl down to the ground. The Deino simply steps past her before walking up to the head of the Parasaur. It hunches down and drops some fruit into its mouth, then grabs its jaw and helps it chew the fruits. Oh. It seems it’s just here to feed the Parasaur then. Burke quickly moves around it, then grabs Tierney by her arm and drags her over to you. The Deino looks up at the three of you, cocking its head curiously.

You glance around while Burke gives it a staredown in return. Got to watch for ambushes. Make sure there’s no other Deinos around waiting in ambush. The bushes around you are all quiet. Only a few Compies come out to scavenge for food.

The Deino snarls a little, getting your attention again. It squints at you, then looks at your guns, and back to your eyes. Does it recognize you? Is it one of those Deinos from that night with the Spinosaurus? It reaches for a satchel on its side, then pulls it open to reveal a flexible bag with a cap on it. It uncorks the cap, then starts feeding the trapped Para water. Oh. This thing is keeping the trapped Parasaurolophus alive. Right. Strange.

Tierney stands up, shivering and shaking in her knees and hands. “Is it-…” Burke slowly steps in front of Tierney, keeping herself between her and the Deino.

The Deino squeezes all the water out then places the empty water bag into its satchel. It clicks its teeth at you, then barks. You all flinch, stepping back. It stands there, its tail waving side to side as it looks at you three. You look at it in its Reptilian eye. It blinks, glaring at you. Then it looks at the fallen tree. It looks back at you again. It scratches the tree and barks at you three. You step back, keeping your gun level on it. It barks once more, then scratches the tree and tries to push it. It continues looking at all of you as it does this.

Is it trying to ask you something?

It barks, then pushes the tree repeatedly, like a dog trying to wake up a pig.

Burke leans over. “I think it’s trying to ask us to help it move the tree.”

“Why would it ask that?” you whisper.

She shrugs. “Maybe it’s desperate. Maybe it’s the family cow or something for all I care.”

> No. Move on. You’re not going to get involved with Lizards today, no sir.

You nod to Tierney. “Come on.” She hesitates as you walk up to the Deino. It pushes up against the tree, trying to relieve the weight off the Parasaurolophus. You too try to push against it as well. Burke stands there, keeping her DMR ready in case things go south. Truth be told, you’re not sure why this is now happening. But it’s happening. May as well let it. You shove against the tree.

Then the tree starts rising up. You look over to see Tierney lifting the tree. Her arms are done up in the power harness to further enhance her strength. The Deino slips underneath the tree, trying to leverage its legs to further push the tree up. The Parasaurolophus groans, shifting slightly as it starts finally getting actual breaths of air. It turns over onto its belly, pushing forward as it slips underneath the tree. There you go, just a little more! Your arms cry out in agony at the exertion of lifting a tree several times your size and width. Soon it comes up to your chest, then up to your head level.

The Parasaur slips out, whooping with energy and newfound freedom. The moment it does, you all let go. The tree collapses down onto the ground. The Deino whips its tail around, chirping as it skips and jumps around the Parasaurolophus. You notice purple paint marks along the side of the animal. So it belongs to the Deinos. Interesting. The Deino raises its arms, continuing to chirp and sing as it sprints and jumps around the Parasaurolophus. That bad boy is happy as can be.

Then you hear calls and barks from the south too. Oh. More Deinos. The Deino stops and calls out into the sky. They respond in kind, long whooping howls and yops. Tierney and Burke freeze, looking around. The Deino turns around to you, then takes its basket of fruit. It then takes one out of the basket and shoves it against your chest. The fruit is a very healthy yellow. And it’s absolutely massive too. It’s about the size of your head!

You take it. It clicks its teeth, whipping its tail side to side as it grabs rope from its other satchel. It lassos the Parasauro around its neck, then starts leading it back southwards.

Burke continues aiming at it as it leaves. “… Um. Did you two just help some Lizard?”

> “I don’t know. But I don’t want to stick around in case his friends come see. Let’s go.”

You sniff the fruit a little. Smells sweet actually. Not quite strawberry or apple. You bite your teeth into it. The outer layer is quite thin like an orange. You chew down and bite some. And holy hell, it’s sweet! It’s actually the kind of sweet you like. It’s eating a mango. You take another sniff, feeling some juices dribble down your lips and chin. Goddamn, it tastes good. You look over at Burke and Tierney. They both look as if you just bit into a child’s shit. “Uh. You guys want some?”

“No thanks,” says Burke. “What now?”

“Let’s check around the area. Maybe we can find the other half of the boat.” Burke nods, still looking at you with a healthy amount of disgust. She steps away and starts going west in the general direction of where the other half might have gone. Tierney curiously sniffs the fruit, then steps away. Fine. They don’t want any? All for you. Ah, who are you kidding, you’ll save some for them. You look at the fruit again. Its insides are quite pulpy, juicy even. You hope this doesn’t give you any hallucinations or anything. Lord knows, you don’t want to do that again.

The three of you start sweeping the area. You stick the fruit into your satchel and keep your Carbine up. 50 meters west and in between, you do find pieces of the Retrieval Boat scattered around the place. Unfortunately, most of it has been picked clean by Compies.

Finally, you do find a huge chunk of the cockpit. Two Compies fight over a rotting human hand before Burke kicks at them to shoo them away. Seems the entire front half disintegrated. Inside the chunk of the cockpit was a massive pile of gore and viscera, probably the pilot. Several Compies chew and gnaw at the remains, heedless of your presence. Probably the biggest piece of meat they’ve had in a while. Tierney goes pale on seeing it, then turns her head and away and scans around the woods.

“Well. We found the front half,” says Burke. “I don’t think there’s anything useful left here. You want to keep going north and see if we find anything worth mentioning? Or do you want to head back?”

“I mean…” Tierney steps up. “I’d like to head back before it gets dark.” Burke glances at her, clearly not impressed. “You never know what happens in the dark.”

“We’ll keep going. Come on.” You lead Burke and Tierney forward north. You look for dogtags on the pilot’s body quickly but find nothing unfortunately. Seems you’ll have to confirm his death through some other means. The three of you start moving.

The forestry in this area starts opening up a little. Your boots slosh through small ponds and muddy drifts. Unfortunately, you see clouds overhead. Seems like rain might be coming soon. And still you don’t find anything. Seems north might be too dense and too hostile for a permanent base or even some kind of fall back point. You hold the strap keeping the Carbine on your side as you march. Tierney and Burke glance around, trying to keep 360 cover as you move along.

So far, it’s a bust moving this way. But you won’t give up just yet. There’s plenty of time before dusk starts to set in.

Burke steps forward to you. “So how was that fruit?”

“It was good, you still want some?” you ask. She shakes her head. “I’m surprised. That Deino didn’t seem too interested in killing us.”

“We are on their turf. They don’t just breed to kill things,” says Burke. “Though, if that happens again, we shouldn’t take any chances.”

“What do you mean?” you ask.

“We’re here to survive, not make friends,” says Burke. “They were trying to kill us one night. I don’t think that-“

“Uh. Guys.” You and Burke look back.

Tierney is sinking, down to her knees. She trembles, looking down. “Wh- what’s happening!?”

“Quick sand,” says Burke rather calmly. She looks down at her boots. “You crossed too slowly. Goddamn it.” Frakking hell. All the trees around you are a little too high. And there are no vines. “Just stay calm and relax.” Tierney nods, freezing as she slowly sinks in. “We’ll get you out. It’s probably not even that deep anyway.”

Right. How do you want to do this?

“Hold it there, Tierney. Don’t struggle.” She nods, stiff as can be. “Toss Burke your equipment. I’ll go find something to pull you out, alright?” Tierney quickly tosses Burke her rifle, then moves to toss the Cannon still in its crate too. You move around, trying to look for something for her to grab onto. A branch, some leaves, a vine, something. Tierney slowly sinks down to her thighs, almost to crotch level.

“Goddamn, how deep is that?” asks Burke.

“Please don’t make me wonder!” says Tierney.

You finally find a long branch. That should do, somewhat. You reach out with the branch. “Grab on.” Tierney reaches out and takes it, just as the quicksand reaches up to her hips. She starts pulling herself along, the quick sand bubbling around her as she marches out. Alright, there you go.

Then a shot snaps against a tree. “Sniper!” You and Burke dive down to the ground. Tierney screams, struggling to try and get out. Burke shouts at Tierney. “Tierney, don’t struggle! Stop struggle-“ Another shot rips through a branch as she rolls into a bush. Came from the north. Shit! You look north and see nothing but trees and leaves. He’s somewhere in there!

“Help! Help!” Tierney whimpers, trying to free herself out of the quick sand. “Don’t leave me here! Get me out!” The more she struggles and fights, the further and quicker she sneaks.

“Burke, cover me!” Burke pops up and fires a shot out in the direction of the sniper. It fires again, nearly striking her. Tierney screams in terror, covering her head as she tries to wrestle her way out of the quick sand. “Tierney, Tierney!” You grab the branch and hold it out to her. “Grab it! Grab it now!” She reaches out, the sand reaching up to her chest. She grabs onto the end. You start pulling again as you lie prone. Come on.

“I’m still sinking!” Tierney shrieks, tears pouring down her cheeks.

“Just hold on, just hold on!” you say. Burke fires again. You only get her in maybe a few centimeters each pull. But you’re getting her out slowly but surely.

“Come on, get her out!” shouts Burke as she takes cover behind a tree. Tierney suddenly sinks down to her neck.

“Ah! Oh my God, please no! No!” Tierney starts sobbing.

“Just hold on, I got you!” you shout. Come on, just pull her out! You can do it! She starts rising up out of the sand slowly as she gets pulled out by you. Every centimeter counts. Just hold on.

Then a shot shoots straight into the quick sand. “Ah!” Tierney screams, letting go of the branch. No! She suddenly sinks down, disappearing beneath the surface! No! No!

Oh God, this is probably going to kill you.

Whatever.

You crawl up to the pit and wrench your hands straight into the quick sand. It’s almost like reaching through goopy thick water. Unfortunately, that means if Tierney has stopped struggling, she won’t be reaching out for you. Come on, come on! You force yourself to go through farther until your head dips in. You shut your eyes and keep your mouth shut as you push deeper and deeper. How big is this pit!? Where is Tierney!? You can feel sand and muck dripping into your nose and ears. The sounds of gunshots are muffled by everything all around you as you try to find her.

Then you feel something solid. You grab it and squeeze it. A stick? No. It’s got give to it. Feels like a glove. No! Tierney’s hand! You grab it, then start pulling.

You come out first, holding her hand. Thank God, it’s still attached to her arm! You start pulling her out. Caution gets thrown to the wind, better a broken arm than suffocating in a quick sand pit! Burke fires a shot. And no shot comes back at her. Burke looks at you. “I think it’s dead.”

“Great, great!” you shout. “Help me!” Burke runs over, then grabs Tierney’s shoulder as you pull her straight out. It’s as if the ground itself doesn’t want to give her up. One final pull!

She gets pulled free. You fall flat on your back from the tension, and she goes straight on your chest. Oh. You breathe easy and pat Tierney on the chest. She’s okay. She’s out of the pit. Thank God. “Oh. Oh thank God. She’s okay. You’re okay, Tierney.” Burke stands there, staring at you. You start laughing a little, wiping sweat off of your brow. Then you look to your hip. Oh. Oh shit, you’re bleeding. Frak, they must have hit your side in all of that. You look over and see blood on the ground. Better dress that first and-

“Hey. Boo.” You look up at Burke. Very blankly, she points to Tierney, who’s still lying on top of you. “You realize she’s dead, right?”

What. You look down at Tierney.

She’s not moving.

You quickly sit up and take a look at her face. Her eyes are frozen open in horrifying fear. Her mouth hangs open, silt and sand pouring out of it. You shake her a little. Limp. Completely limp. But still warm.

> Revive her. Revive her now.

You shake her head. “Tierney. Tierney!” you shout in her face. No response. She’s probably drowned in the quick sand. This isn’t anything like water though, you can’t just spit that stuff out. You lay Tierney on her back then start scooping out the muck from her mouth. Burke stands back, watching the area while you do this. You look back at her. “Burke, don’t just stand there!”

“What the frak do you want me to do? Call for help!?” Okay. That- you’re not going to argue, you’re kind of isolated. Wait, wait, wait. You point to her gut.

“Punch her in the gut, do it.” Burke doesn’t even hesitate. She punches Tierney in her gut. You see Tierney flinch. There! There! You keep scooping out more muck until nothing is left in her mouth. It’s all probably in her throat. Right. This is probably going to result in some lost fingers. You stick a finger down her mouth and try to poke at her uvula. Activate the gag reflex. Come on.

Nothing. You reach your finger past her uvula. Come on! The rain starts falling down. A few drops hit her eyes. But they don’t blink.

Still nothing. “Tierney, don’t play around!” You shake her, then again try to activate her gag reflex. Come on, hurl that stuff out. Breathe. Breathe! “Tierney, please! I promised to get you out! Don’t make me break a promise!” You shake her again, violently. Don’t do this. Please don’t do this. She’s still so limp. “Burke, push up against her gut again, come on!” you scream. Burke hesitates. “Do it! Come on!” She presses both hands against Tierney’s gut. Squeeze that stuff out. Squeeze it out. Like toothpaste out of the tube. You see some silt come out of her throat. There, you wipe it out with your hand. She again presses down. More. Alright, just a little more. Just a bit more. Come on, Hal, don’t do this. Burke punches down on Tierney’s gut harder. More dirt comes out of her throat. Scoop it out. Little by little.

You reach down into Tierney’s mouth and try once more to make her gag.

Nothing! Nothing!

Burke pulls you away for a second, then she slaps Burke straight across the cheek.

A cough. Tierney starts twitching. You hold her in your arms. That’s it. Cough it out. She blinks, gagging and retching. You turn her onto her side. She falls onto her front, choking loudly. You wrap your arms around her below her chest then squeeze. She finally retches out everything in a watery yellow sandy bile. She sobs, coughing and gagging as she expels everything out onto the ground. She spits and continues vomiting.

You’ve never been so glad to see a woman vomit before.

Tierney finally stops retching. She spits and drools onto the ground, clearly dazed and stunned by the experience. She shakes heavily, shock and mortal terror gripping her. She quietly whimpers, not able to form words for it. “Tierney?” You say her name. She nods, tears, snot, and spittle coming off of her face. “You okay?” She shakes her head, shivering in your arms. “Can you walk?” She shakes her head again, crying quietly.

I really don't think now is the time for that. Can't really blame her, either, she kept pretty cool while sinking in a pit of quicksand until a dino started taking shots at her completely immobilized self.
>>
>>3055721
Lmao she's a soldier. We need to have a fair and firm hand. In this case, she panicked in the worst possible moment. There is no excuse for that even if it's understandable. Reminding her is a reasonable thing to do.
>>
>>3055740
A soldier that just fucking died, give a days rest before you start shitting all over her.
>>
>>3055743
How is it shitting on her? She'll have plenty of time to reflect on the haul back and we can tell her then. She has to learn and learn quickly since there is no guarentee that we will even have a days rest in our current perdicament. We are outnumbered, outgunned, and out of time. She has to learn and there is no time like the present after a life or death situation.
>>
>>3055771
She's traumatized, nothing you say to her now is going to stick or make any sort of impact.
>>
>>3055795
Or perhaps it is precisely after such a harrowing event that such lessons will be remembered. If anything, OP can have us roll for it.

> Carry her back to camp. By any means.

“Alright, Tierney, I’m going to lift you up, ok?” She nods, relaxing a little. You grab her by her hips, then hoist her up onto your shoulders, carrying her in a fireman’s carry. Burke picks up the Plasma Cannon crate and Burke’s rifle. It’s a lot of equipment to carry, but it’ll be worth it to get Tierney back. You hold onto her legs and arm and nod to Burke. “Take point, I’ll be right behind.”

Burke nods. “Right. Let’s go.” She starts at a slow jog, allowing you to keep pace. The rain unfortunately is making it hard to see in front of you. It’s coming down in a torrential downpour. But you don’t care about that. Right now it was all about getting Tierney back to camp.

The march back is long, and made longer by the rain and the mud. But you make it past the site where you found the Parasaurolophus. Amidst the raindrops and the splash of your boots in the mud, you hear the rustling of leaves and cracking of timber. They’re following you. A shot sings past, hissing with danger. Shit! Burke starts sprinting forward. “Burke, wait!” you shout. She slides to a stop. “Alright-“

“Stop!” She holds out her hands to you. You slide to a halt.

The stream. It’s a rushing torrent of water now. And you know exactly how deep this stream is, it’s high enough that you’ll be completely covered. Frak! Fraking hell! You hear Steno cries north of you in the distance. They’re coming and they’re coming quick. You look down at the stream. Right now if you were to cross, it’d just be at your thighs. But it’s quite wide. You had to make a pretty decent jump just to get across. “Okay, Burke, I’ll-“ She throws the cannon across, then takes a few steps back and jumps across. Her feet slip at the edge but she manages it. “… or you can jump across without me.”

“I’ll cover,” she says. She kneels down and gets sighting with her DMR. “Come on!” You’re not making that jump with Tierney on your shoulders.

You jump down into the stream. Your legs almost buckle from the running water. It doesn’t even look like it’s going that fast. But so much water at thigh level is enough to almost push you down. Burke steps to the side, ready to offer her hand. Just go upstream, work your way across. It’s not too easy considering Tierney is on your back and now you’re top heavy. You keep pushing forward. A shot screams past Burke. “Shit!” Burke goes prone, and starts firing back. More shots ping and splash against the muck. “Good thing these Stenos are amateurs.”

“Burke!” you shout. “Little help?!” The water soaks and chills your legs to the point where you almost can’t feel them anymore. But you’re almost across. Burke crawls up and grabs Tierney’s shoulders. She pulls her off of you. Alright. That’s good. You try to step forward.

You slip.

The next thing you see is water rushing over your eyes and into your nose and mouth. You break the surface, grabbing onto the side. The water level is rising quickly. Very quickly! “Boo!” Burke yells to you. You went downstream several meters. Shit! Just got to-

A pain hits your side! You look down and see your blood dripping into the water. Shit. Your hip wound! You press your hand against it. Frakking hell! You try to climb up again but again your foot slips. This time you catch your footing. Burke slings her DMR and tries to shake Tierney. “Tierney, Tierney! Get up!” Tierney confusedly looks at Burke, still apparently in shock. “Tierney, get up! Or I’ll frakking shoot you! You need to walk!” Tierney tries to stand up, but almost collapses in Burke’s arms. “Goddamn it!”

“Burke!” you shout. Your hands shake as you try to pull yourself up. No traction for your hands! Damn it!

Burke looks to you, then at Tierney.

> “Save Tierney!”

You reach for your knife. “Save Tierney!” you shout. Burke stands there, stunned. A shot snaps her out of her funk. “Do it! Go!” Burke grabs Tierney, then starts dragging her out of there. They have to get out of there first. As for you, well… Honestly, no other ideas except to try and get out of this little predicament you’re in. You try to force yourself up. No dice. Water’s too strong! You try to grab at your knife, but your hand holding the edge slips. You’re again swept up in the water.

You tread water. No point in trying to stand. Just go where the water goes. The stream cuts downwards, then starts slowly widening out. Frakking hell!

You hear a Steno cry. Huh!? You look up and see Stenos on the north side of the river. They aim their rifles at you, firing. The shots zip and whizz past, plinking into the water all around you. You dive down and keep your eyes open. The shots harmlessly burst and shatter going into the water. Unlike what the holos will tell you, bullets going faster the speed of sound will actually disintegrate in water fairly quickly. Safest place right now is in the water.

Then you see a massive rock in the way. Nevermind. You force yourself up. Not quick enough. It strikes you in your wound. “Ah!” you scream. Water floods into your mouth and splashes against your eyes, blinding you for a few seconds. The current is getting faster and faster! You try to swim to the south side. You look over and see a fallen tree hanging down over the river. A branch breaks into the water. You swim over to get ready. More Stenos are coming, running along the north side of the stream to intercept you. There has to be at least a dozen, maybe more.

You try to grab at the branch. It zooms by. Damn it! You missed it! You see another fallen tree ahead, this time sunken into the stream on the left, the south side. You squint. Past it are rocks jutting out of the water. Lots of rocks. Oh dear.

Another shot rips through the water at you. Son of a…

You swim for the side and reach as far as you can. Your hands grab onto the branch. One of them slips and gets caught in the water. Damn it! You try to reach with that hand again. Then a shot zips by, making you flinch. The Stenos stop, chirping and chittering. They stop firing, looking at you as you try to grab onto the branch. One of them clicks its tongue, barking rapidly. The others bark too, apparently some kind of laughter. One of them fires a shot at the tree. The bark splinters above you. They barking again.

Sadistic fraks! You try to hold on. The current is up to your chest now! Goddamn it! You grab on with the other hand. Just gotta take it one step at a time!

The branch starts coming lose.

Well. That’s wonderful.

You try to grab onto the tree proper. A sniper shot smacks against the tree, sending bark straight into your cheek. You grit your teeth, trying to pull yourself up while fighting the current. Your hands slip again. Frak! You grab again onto a branch.

The Stenos continue laughing at your attempts to survive. One of them takes a potshot at you. The shot wings your arm, drawing some blood. They howl and bark at seeing you get wounded. You’ll get them back! One of these days you will!

You try to pull yourself up. But your hands can’t hold. They slip from the wet wood and send you down river. The Stenos watch as you get swept up into the water. You look at the incoming rocks. Well. If you relax and try to take your mind off of it, maybe it won’t hurt as bad. Hell, they don’t even look jagged.

You slam back first into the first one. Okay, it actually really frakking hurts! Your arm hits another one. Then your hip again strikes a rock under water. Son of a bitch! Pain shoots out in all directions all over your body. It’s like someone is hitting you over and over with a hammer with every stone and rock that you crash into. You bash your elbow against one. “Ah!” That brief second to scream sends more water into your mouth. And a sudden dip in the stream sends you back down under water. Something hits you again. Feels like something just cracked inside of you. Was that bone? Was that just muscles? You can’t tell.

You put your hands out to try to grab onto something, anything. Your left hand slams into something. Okay. Something definitely broke there. You feel some items in your satchel come loose too in the struggle. No! Damn it!

You want to say that you did this to make sure Tierney survived. Just imagine that Tierney is okay. That the others are all okay. Even if you die, they’ll get out eventually right? They’ll get back to the ship. Hopefully the Dominion recognizes what they’ve been through and discharges them with no further need to be conscripted. They get to go home. They get to live their lives. But what about you? You’re fighting drowning a river and fighting literal rocks.

Goddamn it.

You can’t die like this. As you look around underwater, you see one last rock coming right at your head.

You hope this’ll knock you out, so that the drowning will be painless.

It grows as you come closer to it. Until it fills your vision. A loud thump fills your ears. And darkness becomes your vision.

Nothing.

Something smells horrific.

You get roused. And immediately regret it. Your hand feels like it’s on fire. Your hip feels like you’ve ben stabbed. And your back feels weird as well. Everything hurts. You open your eyes slowly. Your left eye is covered in silt and mud. You’re in a river delta, lying on your side as the water flows past your legs. Something pecks at your leg. You look down. It’s a Compsognathus. It’s chewing on your pant leg. Another hops onto your foot and scratches at your ankle, curiously. You twitch. And they immediately bolt.

Seems they don’t like live prey.

Still. You’re alive. In horrific, God fearing, demonic pitchfork driving into your asshole pain. You hear something behind you. Like something going through your satchel. Wait. Where the hell is it? Where’s your Carbine? Frak.

Well. At least it’s not raining. Judging by the dark clouds but with the light out in the sky, is it morning? Mid-day? How many days has it been? Can’t have been long.

Regardless. What should you do?

Your right arm at least feels fine. You force it to move. Wiggle your fingers. They feel fine. You poke yourself on your left hand and feel a sharp stinging pain in your palm. Yep. Broken. Or at least fractured. You poke yourself in the ribs. Hm. Nothing too bad. Thank goodness. You can endure a broken hand, maybe a broken leg. But cracked or broken ribs are absolute –agony-. You touch yourself behind your back. Feels weird near the top. Maybe a fracture? You can’t tell. You try moving your legs a little. Nothing seems to sting. It’s just sore rather than painful.

You could probably walk if you needed to. But right now, you’re just exhausted and in a little too much pain to move.

Right. Time to get up then. Maybe if you-

You hear a hissing noise behind you. Oh God. It comes stomping closer to you. Then you feel it’s foot on your side. Oh. Frak. You’ll take drowning over being eaten alive. Goddamn it. It turns you onto your back.

Staring down at you is a Deinonychus. It has a black stripe across its snout, with white painted teeth around its jaws, like a shark mouth you suppose. It cocks its head, leering at you. Two more come around into your field of vision. They click their teeth, sniffing at you. If you had your carbine…

One of them chews on a piece of yellow fruit. Wait. Is that your fruit!? The others look at it, wondering why it’s choosing to eat now apparently. Chewy snorts, dripping juices down onto your face. The Deinonychus with the teeth paint snorts, then turns around and leaves. The other two follow it. You turn your head to look at them.

Wait. They’re looting your satchel! One of them picks up your carbine, apparently weirded out by its strange shape. Another sticks its snout into the satchel, sniffing loudly as it does so. And the third, the one with the teeth paint simply stares at you. Why, you… You try to sit up.

And immediately give up.

Okay. They win this round. Damn Lizards.

You press your hand at your hip and flinch. You’ve probably been bleeding for a while now. What should’ve been a minor wound might turn into the very thing that kills you here. Goddamn it, survive almost a week on this planet and it’s this that does you in. It’s not even tragic, it’s –humiliating-. And meanwhile, while you’re lying about here, those three Lizards are rifling through your bags like a bunch of black hat looters. You ought to show them how neat a plasma hole in their skull can look. But right now, there was this matter of business, assessing your wounds.

You have a glancing GSW to your right hip. Probably aggravated from those hits you took in the rapids. Your left hand is probably either fractured or broken. Your back is feeling weird, maybe one of your vertebrae. Other than that, you can be absolutely thankful you have no cracked or broken ribs. Those would be enough to just make you throw yourself back into the river. Right. You can improvise a splint with some stiff sticks and maybe some leaves or maybe the lining from your satchel. Bigger questions though are these:

- How far down river did you drift? You could be a kilometer or two away from camp, or you could be nearly a hundred kilometers away.

- How much blood did you lose? You could bleed out at any moment if you don’t patch yourself up quickly.

- How hungry are you? You feel like your stomach has cannibalized itself. At least you’ve got running fresh water here so you won’t shrivel up and dehydrate.

You shake your head, groaning a little. That gets the attention of the Deinos. They glance at you for a second, before going back to play with your belongings. The one holding your carbine bites down on it gently. Aw, come on! Don’t do that! Why do these frakking savages bite everything they see!? “Hey!” you shout hoarsely. They immediately cock their heads, staring at you.

Okay. You’re playing a dangerous game here. First off. Stand up. Stand up straight. And stand –confidently-. Any shred of weakness, they will know. You roll over onto your front, then push yourself up slowly with your knees and your right hand. Slowly, left foot first, then right foot. You stand, almost stumbling a little before looking at them. The teeth painted Deino snarls at you, squinting its eyes. The other two as well look curiously at you. They must be amazed that someone as weak looking as you managed to stand up. Probably your crowning achievement before they decide to kill you and eat you. But by God, you’ll be killed and eaten like a frakking man.

One of them holds the carbine up, clearly confused by its construction. It slips its claw into the trigger guard. “Wh- hey, hey-…” It squeezes and fires off a shot into the ground. The Deinos leap and run around in circles from surprise before looking at the smoking plasma mark in the silt of the river delta. One of the Deinos caws loudly, staring intensely at the hole.

You’d actually be laughing right now because this looks no different from that one time a Conscript squeezed off a round by accident. But you’re too exhausted and hurt to do so.

Behind them was nothing but vast ocean. Wait. How far did you go down river? Shit. Shit! Goddamn it! The Deino holding your Carbine looks at it again, amazed by what it just did. The tooth painted Deino walks up to it, then starts clicking its teeth. The two of them appear to be communicating. Are they figuring something out? They glance at you, then at the Carbine. The Carbine wielding Deino points to the woods, chirping quietly as it makes a falling motion with its free hand. The third Deino hides behind Toothy, glaring at the Carbine. The two of them look at you, then at the Carbine.

You slowly step up to them. “Uh, er-…“ They start stepping back, baring their teeth silently at you. The one holding your Carbine clutches it tightly, holding it close to its body. Okay. They want your Carbine. That’s nice. That’s really nice. Okay.

Are you –really- going to try and talk to a bunch of Lizards?

Well. May as well. It’s either that or give up or be eaten. You snap your fingers, getting their attention once more. You snap your fingers again. They stare at your good hand, clearly confused. One of them looks at its own hands, then tries to snap its claws. No dice. Its claws are not built for that like your fingers are. Okay. What do you want to explain?

A light bulb goes off in your head! The Parasaurolophus! You look around, then find a little twig caked in the mud. You bend over, and feel a sharp pain in your side from the wound. Son of a gun! That hurts! You pull the twig out quickly, then kneel down. You start jabbing the ground. They stare at you, clearly confused by what you’re trying to do. Well, it’s going to become quite clear soon enough. You may be separated by language barrier, but these things –have- to be smart enough to understand images of things that look like things they know. You draw a Parasaurolophus head in the ground. One of them scratches its cheek, squinting. The one holding your Carbine drools as it looks. While Toothy over there glares intensely at your drawing. Okay, Parasaurolophus.

You draw a long line, and leaves coming out the top: tree. They keep looking at it. Right. They seem attentive. Next you draw a tree over the Parasaurolophus. One of them raises its head, cocking it. Please be following along. You draw a stick figure, then point to yourself. They look at the stick figure, then at you. Associate the stick figure with you. Then you draw two more. One of them quickly steps forward, surprised. The other two quickly look as well, baffled. What. What are they-

Oh. Shit. SHIT. Now it thinks there are three of you! You quickly draw distinguishing features. One has a square on its body, the other is smaller than the rest. One for you, one for Tierney, one for Burke. They step back. Toothy clicks its teeth, voicing something to the other two. Okay. You’re getting somewhere. The stick figures are next to the Parasaurolophus. Then one of the Deinos, just the general shape of them. They tilt their heads, looking at the figure. Toothy points at it, then at the Carbine holder.
>>

Right. You draw all four next to the fallen tree, then wipe away the tree. You make a lifting motion with your hands, then point to the Parasaurolophus. You stomp away for a few seconds, then come back and draw a circle. You point to the one holding your half-eaten fruit. It looks down at it, then you point at the circle. You motion to yourself. It looks down at the fruit its holding.

Then it takes another bite.

Well, it wasn’t like you were going to finish it anyway considering its eating it.

Toothy snarls, then lowers itself down and starts drawing on the ground too.

It draws a massive creature with a sail on its back. Spinosaurus? You cock your head. It then stabs its claw into its head and body, then points to the Carbine. You squint. Then it points to you.

Oh. It’s asking if you killed the Spinosaurus.

You did also kill one of their own that night too. Little awkward. But maybe not mention that.

Okay. Really missing someone who’s good at artsy stuff here. You point to the Spinosaurus it drew, then making biting motions with your hands at yourself. The three of them stare at you. You start jogging in place, turning your back on them for a second. Then you make sneaky crouching motions, then X out the Spinosaurus. That’s as… affirmative as you can probably get. You stand up, looking at them, guarded and ready to bolt.

The one holding your Carbine looks at it, then looks at you. It clicks its tongue at Toothy, before pointing at you. Toothy snorts, snarling as it glares at you. The one holding the fruit simply eats, inattentive. Maybe you should probably just run. Then again, out in the open, you’re not going to make it far. Even without those exosuits, these Deinos could probably could close the distance pretty fast.

Toothy bares his teeth, snarling at you. Oh boy. You step back, holding your hands up. Then the one holding your Carbine quickly steps up and stands between you two. It barks at you, then points to the Spinosaurus drawing. Is it asking that you confirm? It points again, barking more loudly. You nod.

Then realize they don’t know what nodding is. You shift around and again X it out with your twig. The two Deinos look at each other, then at the drawing, then at you. Toothy whips its tail around, clearly agitated. The Carbine holder sniffs at you, tilting its head curiously. It snorts, its nostrils flaring as it tries to catch your scent. You do remember that shower you had after you found Sergeant Cope. Maybe you don’t smell like dead Spinosaurus to them. It steps back, keeping an eye on you. It looks back at Toothy then clicks its teeth, quietly. Toothy howls, giving off a high-pitched shriek in response. Carbine shrieks back. The two advance on each other, circling around.

The one eating the fruit continues eating the fruit. You’re not sure why it’s just standing there eating while it's two pridemates quarrel with each other. Maybe it's dumb.

You blink, feeling a little woozy. You look down at your wound, then swear under your breath. Son of a bitch. You have to fix that. You look at your looted satchel and find some wet packets of gauze and an Inst-Aid. You step around them to get at it.

Toothy steps in front of you, standing up like a kangaroo so he towers over you. Uh.

Carbine Holder shoves him onto his side. Toothy cries out, rolling onto his legs before making a swipe at Carbine Holder. Carbine Holder shrieks loudly at Toothy, barking and cawing at them. The two are clearly at odds. Maybe he’s actually on your side. Maybe he actually believes you! Carbine Holder motions to your things at your satchel, then glares at Toothy.

Okay. Okay! You kneel down and pick up the gauze, the Inst-Aid, and check inside the satchel. So far, all you see is a spare power pack and a grenade.

And… that’s it. Your IFAK must’ve gotten washed down the river somewhere. Even then, it won’t help with the fracture. You still need a splint for your hand. You take the gauze and roll it out until you get some dry strips. Then you wrap it around your hip. Now for the Inst-Aid. This is your only shot of Inst-Aid. Do you use it?

> Use the Inst-Aid on your hip, to help clot the bleeding and fix the wound.

Much as you’d rather have a functioning hand, moving with an injured hip is going to be a lot more worse as the day drags on. You bite the cover then spit it off, then stab the needle into your hip. A second of pain will go a long way to alleviate days of it. You sigh as you pull the needle out and drop it. The Deinos stare at the needle. The Carbine Holder walks up to it then picks it up. “Whoa, hey, hey!” You swipe it out of his hand, then quickly shove it into your satchel. Okay, do not litter around these guys. It stares at you, as if in disbelief that you just –took- something out of its hand. But you can’t really adequately explain why a used needle is dangerous.

You sigh, stepping back. A howl goes off in the distance. The three Deinos look south in the direction of it. Toothy barks at the two of them, then starts marching down the silt to the south. The one eating the fruit finally finishes, then quickly shakes its head of excess juices and starts going with him. Carbine holder snorts, looking at you. He starts walking with them, still looking at you.

Uh.

He stops, chirping. Now hang on. You can’t just go with them. What if they’re leading you into some cannibal village? Or worse? What if this is some ploy to get you alone so- wait, you’re already alone.

Worse off. The others could be looking for you right now. Burke saw you go down the stream. She’ll likely know that to find you, she just has to head downstream. If anything, you should either find the stream you got dumped out of or stay here until they come for you. You look around. Nothing but open marshy sand, mud, and water. And to the east was the tree line above a short sandy ridge. If you stay here, you’ll be in the open. But if you go east, you’ll be alone.

Wait. You look at the Carbine. You point to it, snapping your fingers. It looks down at the Carbine, then idly tosses it back to you. You grab it, almost flinching from the pain in your left hand. Shit. Forgot.

But… wow, it actually gave you back the Carbine. It chirps again, waiting to see if you’ll come with them.

> No. Stay here. They’ll find you eventually.

You could camp out here. In the open. Next to a fresh water source. In an area where there’s lots of man eating predators. Or you could go with the Deinos and take your chances. Maybe they’ll have food. You sigh. You look down and see your boots slowly sinking into the silt. You hope your tracks arte good enough for Burke to follow. You’re sorry for making her job harder. But this is your survival at stake. And… you suppose, if they wanted you dead you’d be dead. So, you may as well go with them and see where they’re going. You start following them. The Carbine Holder (who is no longer holding your Carbine, so you’re just going to call him Biney) turns ahead and starts walking after his two companions.

Toothy looks back, then chirps to the other one, Chewy. Chewy clicks his teeth, ranging ahead for the other two. The waves of the ocean crest out onto the beach as the four of you get moving. It feels like morning that’s for sure. Maybe you were out here longer than you thought.

God. What’s Tierney going to think though? Burke will have carried her back to camp. Tierney already has the shock of dying on her. What will she think if she realizes you didn’t make it back with her? Poor girl already has so much on her plate. Not to mention the rest of the camp. Nielson will be worried. So will Graves, Morrison, Tombs… Well, you’re not sure about Graves actually but the others will definitely be. Burke as well. Burke’s alone, you’re probably the only one who can really tolerate her presence. Not to mention without you, Lieutenant Harrell and Sergeant Cope won’t have someone to balance them out. Joffrey will have to take that spot and he’s firmly Lieutenant Harrell’s man.

There’s going to be violence back there without you that’s for sure. And it makes your head hurt just thinking about it. Goddamn, you’ve had way too many blows to the head. You wouldn’t be surprised if you had a concussion or something. Even remembering your goddamn name is starting to become difficult.

And traveling with these Lizards? What are they going to think? Best case scenario, they’ll think you’re some kind of Deino whisperer and that you’ll be able to control them for use against the Lizards. Worst case, they’ll think you’ve gone mad and try to feed you to the Steno. Oh God, you forgot about the Steno! Damn it. Another reason to get back to camp as soon as possible.

You hold your hip, hissing in pain. Your gait is stabbing at you slightly. Hopefully that wound heals soon. It can’t have been too bad if you’re just walking. No, the worst case would be an infection. You can amputate a finger or even a whole limb and hopefully get it replaced once you get back shipside. You can’t amputate your hip.
>>
>>3064959
So many regrets are starting to flood through your head now. What if you hadn’t survived that? You’d have gone through life without getting married, without owning land, without getting to see other planets in the Dominion like Ticonderoga or Madrigal. Hell, you would’ve died without having sex! Ugh. Best not to reveal that to Graves. She’ll never let you hear the end of that. That’s if you get back to her anyway. This was all starting to make you feel like your head just got split like a log. You place your hand on your forehead, groaning a little.

After what feels like an hour or two of walking, you see two more Deinos on top of… a wrecked Medevac! The Medevac has partially sunken into the beach, with the water crashing over it and flowing through a hole on its ceiling. Whatever is in there has probably been spoiled by seawater and sand. Shit. You could use an AutoDoc at this stage. The two Deinos hold rods, with lines going out to see. Another Deino comes out from behind the Medevac, squawking as it sees its three fellow Lizards. Then it sees you. It cocks its head, clearly confused by your presence.

Toothy growls at that Deino, storming past. Biney clicks its teeth at the Deino, pausing for conversation while Chewy hops up onto the sunken Medevac wreck to see if the fishers had caught anything. It finds its way into a basket full of fish. The Deinos turn and bark at it, making Chewy quickly back away. You look around. The Deino talking with Biney reaches into its satchel, then pulls out a few rods. It clips them together then holds it out to Biney. A fishing rod? Biney pushes the rod away, then points to you. Whatever conversation they’re having, it’s going completely over your head. You sigh.

You walk up to the Medevac, with Biney and the other Deino looking at you curiously. You notice the cockpit’s window appears to have been shattered, probably from the impact. One of the pilots is missing though. The other is a skeletal pile in the seat though. You reach in then grab the dogtags.

> Start scanning the ground for something, anything to indicate there was someone walking around.

You start walking around the wreck. Biney and the other Deino watch you as you try to find some evidence of someone leaving the wreck. Biney starts following you around, looking at you as you kneel down and try to find something in the sand. Your hip screams at you when you kneel, but goddamn it hunching over is not something you want to do either. You look down and see faint, very faint, tracks. But they end pretty much right outside of the wreck. Seems this Medevac unfortunately gets caught out at high tide. Which means if there are any tracks, they’re probably way farther out there.

The fishing Deinos yelp as one of them catches a bite. They start reeling in the catch. Their line cuts through the water as their prize starts thrashing and fighting against the pull.

You sigh, looking around. Damn it. Even one more person that can help you in this little predicament would be great. You turn around.

Then find yourself snout to face with Toothy. He snarls at you, baring his teeth. You stand up slowly, then back away. Toothy glowers at you, tail wagging in anticipation. Maybe it’s best to try and keep Toothy in your peripheral vision. You scan around the ground more. Has to be something. You go around to the front towards the cockpit. There you see the Deinos reel in a hulk of a fish, with scales that shine in the sun. It flips and flops about, exposed to the air. Chewy drops down, then plants its foot on its head and brings its toe claw, a coup de grace. The two Deino fishers bark and caw into the air, skipping around and jumping around their kill. Must be some kind of weasel war dance or something.

You look down and find something however. A divots in the ground. Slight ones. They’re not resembling bootprints.

You look down and see a large divot next to the cockpit. The pilot survived and jumped out.

Hm. There is a survivor then. But… where could they have gone? Damn it. If this thing crashed the night of the invasion, which it most likely did given its advanced state of being sunken into the ground, then any tracks on this beach are long gone. It’d take some guesswork to find out where they went.

Biney barks at you, getting your attention. It lowers down, then draws in the sand with its claw: a stick figure. Have they seen one? It points to the Medevac. You point to the Medevac too. Biney steps up, then sniffs the corpse of the co-pilot. It looks down at the divot in the ground and takes another whiff too. It scratches at its nose, apparently confused. Damn it.

> Best not to waste the effort. Just stay with the Deinos.
> They probably went east into the woods. It’s not exposed to the elements, and if they grabbed their Carbine they might find some safety in there. Head in there to find them.

You climb up onto the wreckage and grab one of the fish in the basket. The other Deinos look up at you, hissing. Biney however steps in front of them, clicking his teeth. Right. He’s got your back. That’s for sure. Biney makes biting motions, chirping as he looks around to you. Okay. He holds up one claw. Okay. One fish. Nothing else. Alright. You’ll make this count. You drop down off the wreck then start picking up some sticks. They’re a little damp. But… maybe you can find some closer to the ridge. You start walking up to the shingle, then hoist yourself up to the top. A bit of grassy with some sand is under your feet as you kneel down and pile up the damp wood. You grab some leaves too as kindling. These seem dry. Biney, Chewy, the Deino Biney was talking to, and Toothy watch as you dig a small pit with your hands, then drop the kindling in.

You take some rocks, then start banging them together to create sparks. It takes a few tries, but the leaves light up. Excellent. The four Deinos watch you, curiously as you grab more timbers and sticks then build a little stand for a skewer. You take your knife out then start scaling the fish very quickly. They seem awed by what you’re doing. Whether it’s more efficient or –less- efficient in their eyes, you don’t know. But you’re just going about your business as if they weren’t there.

You chop the head off, then gut the fish and place the guts onto the ground. Chewy immediately licks at them, sniffing as you filet the fish into neat pieces before stabbing them onto the skewer. A little fish kabob. You place the skewer onto the stand, then you kneel down and start puffing air onto your fledgling little fire. Nothing but embers, but it’ll catch. You breathe lightly onto it. The embers flash as oxygen hits them. You see a tiny little flame start to take in the center of it. Carefully you grab some dry leaves, then feed it into the fire. You puff air onto it again. Like holding a bird. Too hard, you kill it, too light it flies away.

Finally, you got the makings of a small fire in your pit.

Now you just have to wait. For one thing, you’re hungry. Another thing, the sea wind might blow the smell of cooked fish. Either a very hungry human will come out to greet you. Or a very hungry predator will come and think you’re the meal.

Either or.

The four Deinos watch carefully. You can’t tell what they’re thinking. Chewy is definitely staring at the fish, waiting to see if you’ll share with him. But Biney and Toothy glance at each other before looking at your little fire pit. Made out of nothing but wood, some leaves, and a little spirit.

Another Deino howls echoes in the distance. All the Deinos, including the ones down at the beach look up. Then they give their calls in response. They’re quite loud. Very loud. But they’re like wolf howls. Toothy squawks at the other three, before moving down south. Chewy and the other Deino follows. The two fishing drop down, grabbing their basket of catches and mounting the huge one on their back before running too.

Biney chirps to you, waiting to see. But… you just cooked your meal. Toothy stops, barking at Biney. Biney again chirps, looking at you expectantly.

You sigh, then take your skewer. You’ve only had maybe a couple of minutes. But hopefully they’re fully cooked through. You quickly bury the firepit with some dirt then set up some sticks. You stake down a marker, then place down an arrow formed out of some twigs pointing south. Hopefully Burke gets this incredibly obvious marker and doesn’t try to kill you for moving –away- from them. You sigh. At this point, you’re probably south of Hill 47. That won’t be great.

You follow Biney. He hisses, turning around to follow Toothy. Toothy glares at you, clearly not amused by your presence before taking lead of the pride. All the Deinos start walking at a slow canter, which means you’ll be walking behind them given your injury. You won’t be jogging until your hip clears up. And they seem nice enough to want you to come with them. But not nice enough to let you ride them. Now there’s an idea, riding a Lizard.

You munch down on some chewy fish. Tastes like salmon. Or close to it at least. It’s cooked, so hopefully there’s no risk of food poisoning. The morning sky is replaced by a clear blue one, with nary a cloud to spoil it. Unfortunately that means it’s hot as all hellfire. At least your clothes are getting dry. But now there’s sand chafing against your skin, not to mention the sand. You look down at the feet of the Deinos. How are they walking on this sand barefoot? Another thing you won’t completely understand about them. These savages seem to have some weird understanding of the world that you don’t. Given they live here and you don’t, perhaps it’s better left to interpretation.

You’ve been walking south for what feels like an hour until you reach what appears to be some kind of settlement. There’s a pier, built from rocks and wood where you see several Deinos maintain what look to be sailboats and little skiffs as well. Well, you’ll be damned. The pier starts from the shingle, which is at a higher point than further up the beach, almost twice your height in fact. And from there, you can barely see structures in the trees and rocks. The Deinos start moving up a trail, guarded by another Deino holding a spear with looks to be a stone tip. The guard looks at you, hissing.

Biney steps in front of you, clicking its teeth. The other Deinos listen in on the conversation. Uh.

Are you being invited into their village? Biney turns around to you, chirping softly, before turning back to the others. A few Deinos on the pier look at you, curious as well.

The guard walks up to you, sniffing at you. You step back. The guard snarls. You see it’s missing a few teeth, not to mention a scar across its snout. Biney watches you two, careful. The guard snorts, stepping back before opening the trail. The fishers go in first, then Toothy and Chewy. Finally, you and Biney. Biney stays close, almost touching his side to your arm. You take your helmet off, panting a little. Your heart’s starting to race at the thought of what’s coming. Is Biney inviting you into their tribe? Are you going to become some kind of cannibal meal?

You arrive up the trail and find the settlement. There’s dozens of wooden square structures, reinforced by what looks to be earth and sod. Their roofs were wooden and logged, with thatch and earth growing grass to armor it against the rain. A central firepit burned in the center, not open flame but rather hot charcoals which had stone slabs on it which cooked fish and meat on them. But what was more striking were the…

Well, the dozens of Deinos all staring at you. They must have immediately picked up your scent as soon as you came in. They all had purple stripe markings on their sides, with face painting varying between each one. Only the smaller ones, juveniles you’d guess, didn’t have them. They all had leather harnesses and little cloth hangings to cover their thighs.

Biney nudges you forward. What. What!? Is he-…

The village people all stare at you.

Uh. Okay. First time in your life you seriously felt like dying would not seem so bad.

You wave at them.

One of the juveniles looks at its hand then waves back. The rest simply stare at you. It’s partly guarded caution, the other genuine curiosity. After all, you don’t look like them. You certainly don’t smell like them. And by God, you’re certainly weaker looking than them. You grab a stick lying on the ground quickly draw yourself as a stick figure, then point to yourself. They continue staring. Okay. This is probably going to be tougher than you thought. Toothy squints, walking past you. He barks once, and the village starts going back to its business.

Well.

One of the juveniles runs up to you, looking up at you. It squeals, balling its claws into fists as it sniffs you. Heh. The little fella is actually kind of cute. It opens its mouth then aims to sink its teeth into your left hand OKAY NOT CUTE. Biney quickly clamps down on the juvie’s neck with his mouth gently, then coaxes it away. The juvenile hisses, indignantly.

What is it with Lizards and biting things they’re not familiar with!?

Biney leads you forward into the village proper. Not only do you get to see the communal coals, you also see some more past the other houses. Out to the eastern end in a large clearing was a huge corral for what seemed to be a group of around six or seven Parasaurolophuses. You actually recognize one of them. That’s the one you rescued. One of the Deinos turns around, a familiar red-faced one. It hisses, immediately sprinting over. You step back again, ready to fire your Carbine.

But the red-faced Deino stops, sniffing at you. It chirps loudly, looking at Biney. Biney croaks, clicking its teeth. The two converse in that strange way that you can’t seem to fathom. Red cocks its head back in surprise at something, then looks at you. Biney points to you, hissing. Red bows to you. Two other Deinos come up behind Red, including a juvenile, then bow as well to you. Eh? What’s this?

Biney turns to you, then draws in the dirt with its toe claw.

It draws the Spinosaurus, and small Deinonychus. The Spinosaurus appears to be eating the Deinos. Oh. Oh! That Spinosaurus was a predator feeding on the Deinos! Other Deinos come over, interested as well. Biney talks to them as well. And once it’s explained, they bow to you.

Okay, you’re now more confused than ever. You killed an apex predator of the region and they’re –grateful-?

Red steps up, then circles one of the small Deinos. It taps that Deino, then the Spino. It chirps quietly. Oh. Well. That…

Toothy yaps, getting everyone’s attention. The crowd splits, revealing Toothy’s new company. Walking alongside Toothy was another Deino, clad in a headdress of black feathers and a leather dress painted stark black. In its hand it held a staff, clattering at the top strung up on it were small wooden balls, and adorning the top was a Lizard Raptor skull. Its snout and face were painted stark white, with the rest painted grim black, drawing out the incredibly bright white eyes. Toothy points to you.

The black Deino steps up slowly to you, almost geriatrically. It brings its nose up to you, then sniffs once. The sound of its nose is almost louder than a gunshot. It squints its eyes, then erases out the drawn Spinosaurus and Deinonychus with the bottom of its staff. It then draws something new.

Raptors, large Rexes, small Troodon and Stenos, Triceratops and Ceratosaurus, and other Lizards you can’t readily identify. It draws a tree aflame in their midst. It points to you, then here.

Is it asking if you brought them here? They technically did come here because of you… and if they found out, you’re not sure what you’re in for.

You quickly take your stick and start drawing out the situation as best as you can. A lot of stick figures, maybe five or six, next to the Lizards. You draw spears and arrows between the two of you. What you’re trying to do is convey that you’re at war with them. And not with these people. The black Deino watches carefully with attentiveness as you try and give a clear picture of what’s going on. You pat yourself, pointing to yourself. Then point up at the sky, then down here. You draw a starship, then draw little boats ferrying you all down.

Wow, you’re really getting your money’s worth drawing all this. Maybe you should’ve been an artist.

The black Deino growls, its teeth visible, yellowed in coloration. You hope that doesn’t mean he’s about to kill you. Biney clicks its teeth, hissing as it steps next to you. The black Deino looks at Toothy. Toothy hisses in response, glaring intensely at you as it starts to curl up in preparation to pounce on you. You step black, ready to kill him if necessary.

But nothing happens. The black Deino sneezes loudly, gutterally snarling as it spits onto the ground. He looks to you, then steps back and gives an ear-splitting howl into the sky. The others lower themselves, almost struck by his cry. You hear some barks in the distance from every direction except west, where the ocean is. The black one turns around and points to the charcoals. Toothy bows, then looks to you intensely.

Biney places his claws on your shoulder, making you flinch. Uh.

He guides you around, then leads you to a little tent by the side of what looks to be an incomplete house by the Parasaurolophus corral. You get a closer look and see a shed where what appears to be large eggs inside of it being tended to by a juvenile. But this little tent Biney appears to be giving you is nothing more than some cloth reinforced by a leather tarp attached to one wall and one wall only.

Biney quickly draws out some kind of visual message. It draws a stick figure inside the tent.

Then it draws a stick figure outside of the tent being beset upon by spears and Deinos.

That’s a very clear message he’s got.

Red comes over then presents a pair of eggs and a little stick. Uh? Red takes the stick and smacks the egg open, revealing the yolk inside. It wants you to eat a raw egg? You haven’t done that since school. It then places it against your chest. You hold it, a little apprehensive. Red chitters, wagging its tail before going back to the corral. Biney bows to you, then points to the tent.

Um. Alright then. Biney turns and heads towards the pier.

Right. What do you do now? You look inside the tent and see some sticks and some scraps of leather. You see a large bedroll. That’s about it.

> FUCK IT I GUESS WE’RE DOING EVERYTHING (I need to get better at these decision points, honestly you probably could’ve just done that all in one story post)

You meekly sniff the egg yolk. Doesn’t smell too bad all things considered. You take out some pieces of egg shell still in there really quickly. Right. Bottom’s up. It’ll be like drinking soup. You place the shell to your lips then tip it up so you can drink from it. The yolk drains straight into your mouth. And just as you suspected, it tastes frakking awful. It’s a raw frakking egg, what did you expect? Then again, the yolk honestly wasn’t too bad. But the whites were just bland. Oh well. Hopefully this doesn’t give you dysentery or anything.

You place the empty eggshell down by the other egg, then grab some sticks and scraps of leather. You assemble a makeshift splint for your hand, making sure it’s tight enough to keep the hand in place but not so tight that it cuts circulation. Oh, what you’d give to have an AutoDoc right about now. Regardless, you step outside and look. Truth be told, this is a relatively peaceful society they have. You’d think that predators would be a little more aggressive but no. They seem to have the concept of living without hunting or fighting down pat. The Juveniles walk behind what you assume to be their mothers on their chores. The males walk around holding their catches. You see a Deino underneath the shade of a tree sitting down and whittling at a piece of wood with its claw. Another pair of Deinos throw charcoal onto the charcoal pit, then place down a stone slab for them to cook freshly skinned meat.

The scent of it cooking immediately hits you and makes you hungry. Even after eating an egg that was the size of your head, you feel as if you need more. But you can’t leave the tent obviously or they might try and kill you. Who knows what they have planned anyway?

You sigh, thinking on it. Honestly, this set up doesn’t seem too bad. And it makes you feel a little bad for coming here to the Swamp. The Lizards clearly hesitated coming to follow you when you arrived there. They probably pressed on to pursue and wipe you all out. And now these Deinos are caught in the middle. But why are they even living like this? Even the Felisians weren’t this primitive. You’re getting more questions than answers at this point honestly.

But alas. You sit down on the bed roll and sigh. Maybe you’ll get some sleep. Hopefully Burke if she’s following your trail lets up on her trigger finger. You do not want that on your conscience. You lie on your back and feel a sharp pain near your shoulder blades. Still the matter of that. You’ll need Graves to diagnose that. Or if not, maybe you can dig out the AutoDoc from that Medevac wreck. You decide to lie on your right side. You clutch your carbine and keep your hand on your knife as well. If anyone tries anything, you’ll be prepared.

...

You awaken to the sound of hissing, squawking, cawing, and barking. Judging by the darkness crept on the tent and the faint yellow light coming through the tent flap, it’s the middle of the night. You must have slept a while. Good of them to let you sleep honestly. Though you feel a little bad for being a burden.

You sit up and look out of the tent to see at least a dozen or more Deinos gathered around the communal fire pit. It is now lit up in a blaze, giving light to the village. You squint and recognize Red among them, along with Toothy and other painted up Deinos. They’re communicating with the black Deino. You understand that he might be a shaman or some kind of elder or whatever.

But what are they talking about? You scoot up to the tent flap, aiming to listen in.

Then they all turn to you, silent.

You quickly scoot back inside. They start talking again. Part of you starts thinking. Those must be the Alpha Males talking. They’re talking about you. That must’ve been what the Shaman called for, a meeting of the leaders to discuss what to do with you. You look out of the flap again. Toothy screeches, clearly dominating the conversation. Red hisses, trying to push Toothy to get a word in. But Toothy headbutts Red, screeching at Red. Red relents, shaking his head.

Toothy clearly has it out for you. If he wins, you may or may not be getting cooked on that fire in the next hour or so.

Hm. You hear some rustling behind you. You turn around then see the back of your tent open up.

Burke. She makes a shushing motion, holding her DMR under her arm. She signs out to you. “Only me. Came to get you out before the rest wake up. Come on.” She is absolutely covered in shit! She must’ve rolled around in some scat to cover up her scent. Damn. But no wait. She managed to get here to you. How!? She holds out her hand to you, clearly intent on bringing you with her.

You decide you need to leave something first for them. You quickly draw on the ground two stick figures leaving the tent and going in the direction the arrow points, eastwards. Burke looks at you as if you’ve gone mad. You’ll have to explain it later though. You take her hand. She pulls you out of the tent from behind, then takes a quick look around on her Infrared. The two of you will have to leave quick. From what you’ve seen, those Deinos can run well even in rough terrain. You hold the egg under your arm as well as the two of you sneak your way out around the corral and towards the woods.

Finally, once you’re out of earshot, you ask her, “What happened?”

“What do you frakking mean, what happened? I went to look for you! Where the frak have you been!?” Burke grabs your collar, hissing quietly between her teeth. “I went downstream. Walked down that beach. Almost got spotted by those Lizard freaks! And I see you in their little tent getting buddy buddy with them!”

“Okay, look, it’s a long story,” you say. “But I couldn’t just stay out in the open alone. You know how dangerous it gets out here.”

“’Oh, I’m sorry, Burke! I got so lonely that I just had to have a Deinonychus jack me off with those sharp claws of theirs, it gets me harder than Aurelian Diamonds. Nevermind there are like four or five young girls who are perfectly willing to open their legs for me, that Lizard cooch is just too hot to pass up!’” She looks incredibly -pissed off-, and that sarcastic comment of hers is likely the nicest thing she has to say to you. Honestly, you’re kind of regretting leaving now. “You know, Tierney is worried sick about you. So is Nielson and Graves and Morrison and everyone else back at camp! I could’ve had you back by tonight instead I gotta frakking escort your-“ She takes a sniff of you. “… why the frak do you smell like fish!?”

“I cooked some fish on the way here,” you mutter. “Look, I know you’re mad.”

“Oh.” Burke leans forward, staring you right in the eyes. “You know I’m mad. How observant.”

“They’re much nicer than you think,” you say. “They didn’t immediately kill me.”

“The fact that you were willing to leave says otherwise,” she says back. “Now listen, we-“ You hear Deino howls back where you came from. They’re loud, yapping, long, and angry sounding. It seems they’ve found out you’ve gone missing. Pretty quickly all things considered actually.

It occurs to you now that since you know where they are, they’re likely to not appreciate that information being leaked out.

> “Okay. Listen. Let’s stay here. We talk it out with them.”

“Burke.” You grab her wrists, stopping her. “Listen. Let’s stay here. We talk it out.”

Burke looks as if you had just suggested the worst possible thing for the worst possible time. You probably just did but that’s beside the point. “Did you take a blow to the head while you were going downstream?”

“Yes, actually,” you say.

“Alright. That explains a lot,” she says.

“Just trust me, okay?” Burke lets her DMR hang at her side, clearly displeased with what you’re suggesting. Sure, yeah. Stay and maybe let them kill you for spoiling their hospitality by running away at the first sign of trouble. Biney did tell you to stay in the tent. And you completely ruined that by trying to run with Burke. But, those Deinos are fast. Very fast. And you’re not going to last long running away. “Okay?”

Burke is silent, hearing the cries and shrieks of the Deinos in the distance. She looks to you, then shoves you. You’re prepared to watch her leave. But instead she stands her ground and draws her DMR again. “The –only- reason I’m staying here is because if Tierney found out I just left you, she’d never stop frakking crying.” You sigh. Thank goodness. No one gets left behind you suppose. You just hope this doesn’t get the both of you killed. The two of you back up, waiting for them.

“Remember, don’t kill them just yet. Maybe they just want to talk to us.” The two of you wait in the dark. You can hear the galloping treading of their feet stomping through the woods. They’re coming and they’re coming fast. You look forward to the underbrush. Just wait.

Then the Deinos burst through the bushes. It’s Toothy and two other Deinos. They two have black stripes across their snouts like Toothy. They snarl at you two, glaring at Burke in particular. Burke steps back, raising her DMR.

Toothy starts advancing on you, brandishing his claws. He barks at Burke, as if to get her to step back. Burke stands her ground, pointing her DMR at him. Toothy opens his mouth, screaming at the two of you. The other two bark and yap at you two as more of Toothy’s black snouted companions arrive on the scene. From the three of them to five, then to seven, then to twelve. A few of them wield torches, bathing the area in an orange and red glow. They start to surround you.

Toothy taps his toe claws against the ground, baring his teeth against you. He’s not attacking. None of his presumed pack are. But he lowers himself down, as if ready to pounce. His nostrils flare as he circles around you two, ready to punish any mistake. You’re really unlucky that Toothy found you first and not say… Red. God, are you really giving them names now?

>>
> Stand your ground. Be confident and unafraid.

You suck in your gut and stare Toothy straight back down. Toothy growls, panting through his teeth into your face. The other Deinos watch carefully, pacing around. This is a battle of the Alphas now. And you are not going to back down and make yourself the runt of the litter. Toothy spits in your face, spreading his stinky saliva all over your cheeks and even into your eyes. All you do is shut your eyes and quickly blink the spit out of them. You don’t step back. You don’t even move in response.

Toothy stares, then bites at Burke. Burke flinches, jumping back. Toothy screams at her, advancing on her. You quickly step in front of her and hold your Carbine up. The other Deinos bark and shriek, egging Toothy on. This is between you and him, not him and her. Toothy tries to circle around, clearly now focused on Burke. You keep spinning around, keeping Burke behind you. Toothy bares his teeth, keeping his eyes dead centered on Burke.

Then you hear a louder shriek behind the crowd. Jumping into the scene now was Red, and other similarly painted Deinos. The blacks and reds start intermixing, watching Red as he advances on the scene and steps in front of you. He spits in Toothy’s eye, making him step back and scratch at his face. Okay, someone’s got your back! How nice!

Burke stares, confused. “Okay, how did this happen?” she asks.

“Remember that Spinosaurus and that Parasaurolophus?” you ask back. She nods. “Yeah. Those.” She nods slowly.

Red screams at Toothy, tapping his toe claws against the ground. Toothy yelps in response, barking at his pride members. The pride barks and chants at being given attention to. Red’s pride shrieks and howls in response, trying to silence them. Toothy growls, then immediately pounces upon Red. Red gets knocked down, and the two begin wrestling and fighting down on the ground with each other. The prides hoot and holler, watching their Alphas go at it.

Burke blinks. “Should we help!?”

You put your arm in front of Burke. No. You can’t help. This is between them. Red and Toothy toss each other around, swiping at each other their claws and trying to get their toe claws into the right position. But they seem evenly matched. Hell, for a second you think Red looks like he’s going to win. Then Toothy gets him onto his back and nearly sinks his toe claw straight into his chest. But then Red bites down on Toothy’s neck and sends him straight onto his side. The two lock in, unable to leverage their toe claws. Instead they’re relying on pure brute strength and a little cunning.

Toothy still has his neck locked in Red’s jaws. Red could probably bite down and finish it, but he’s not. Instead Red is content to push Toothy down and keep him down there.

Burke says, “I hope the one with the Red paint wins.” You and her both.

Then Toothy kicks Red’s legs out from under him. Red buckles down onto his chest, close enough for Toothy to slash at Red’s face. Red lets go, bleeding from his left side. He stumbles back, long enough to allow Toothy to get back up. Oh shit. Toothy leaps, grabbing Red by all fours on his side, then sends him down into the dirt. Toothy stomps his foot down on Red’s face, bringing the claw over his eye.

“Son of a bitch,” you mutter. More prides come in to see what’s happening. As well their Deino shaman. The Shaman comes in, and respectfully the prides part to allow him to see. Toothy looks over, then barks at the Shaman, ready to execute Red. The Shaman stops, silent.

Everyone is silent.

Then the Shaman raises his arms and looks to the sky, gurgling and hissing to the clouds. You look around. All the Deinos cock their heads. They’re just as confused as you are.

Then you hear loud moaning in the distance. Not animal moans.

Rockets. You look to the east and see dozens of smoke trails underneath faint glowing lights in the sky, like shooting stars. They fly upwards rapidly, then start falling to earth rapidly. Once they’re below the trees, you hear the rumbling of explosions. The ground shakes as all the Deinos scream and howl. Toothy steps off of Red, hissing at him as he calls out to his pride. The black-faced Deinos immediately start running east. The other prides split up, quickly going every which a way. The Shaman howls, raising his staff in the air as all the Deinos start going forward.

“Oh, now the Lizards bring artillery. That’s wonderful,” says Burke. Red’s pride gathers around Red, waiting for his word.

Burke nudges you. “Come on, we gotta go.” You look to Red, and see him lying on the ground, struggling to get up. The pride starts abandoning him one by one, until only a loyal trio are left behind. “Hey, boo! We gotta go! The Lizards are shelling the woods! Our camp might be under attack!”

You sling your Carbine. “Boo, what the frak!? Come on!” yells Burke. You shove past the remainder of Red’s pride, then grab Red’s hand. You try to pull him up. But damn, he’s actually heavier than you thought he’d be! You kneel down, cringing at your hip wound getting aggravated. Then you wrap your arm under his neck up to your shoulder, then lift up with your legs. Red slowly steadies himself on his feet as you hold him up. You’re not going to carry this bastard if he thinks that’s what’s going on. But you do feel the weight coming off of you. You step back from Red and see him claw at his new claw scars on his face.

Burke steps up next to you then shoves you. “Would you stop playing nice with the frakking natives, now come on!” Red shakes his head, hissing. Burke looks at him, ready to shoot him if he gets aggressive. But instead Red looks at you and Burke. Red again bows to you. The remaining three members of his pride bow as well.

You hear more moaning rockets in the distance. Red perks up, then croaks at his fellow Deinos. They quickly hurry off east. “Where are they going?” asks Burke.

“Probably to fight off the Lizards,” you say. You look back, and see the Shaman leaving back for the village, escorted by several Juveniles.

“Listen, boo.” Burke pushes you again. “I’m still covered in Lizard scat. And there are frakking rockets falling on the swamp. So maybe we should be getting back!?”

> “No, no. We need to help them. We brought those Lizards here. May as well help make things right.”

If we fight them off, the Lizards will associate the Deinos as our allies, and the Deinos will be forced to ally with us or make enemies of both Dominion and Lizard forces.

Alright but let me kill one of those rocket lizards first, also lets swing by this area that I think might have a survivor hiding in.

> “Alright. Let’s go. Lead the way.”

“Alright, let’s go. Take point.” Burke nods, turning north and moving. You go with her, following behind while you draw your Carbine. “Say, Burke. Listen, thank you for coming back for me. I don’t know if I’ve said that enough.”

“You ever think you don’t need to say it?” she says. “I know you, being the white frakking knight you are, you’d come back for me too. It’s only fair.”

You squint. “Didn’t you say you only came back for me because Tierney wouldn’t stop crying?”

“Yes. I did.” Burke huffs, looking around. “Now how badly beat up are you? Is it anything serious?”

“My back feels kind of weird,” you say. “And I got a fracture in my hand I think. And there’s my hip too. Otherwise, I’m pretty fine.”

“I’ve seen idiots get torn to pieces by rapid rivers before, you must’ve gotten lucky,” she remarks. “Right, enough small talk. Come on.” The two of you start heading into the forest. “We’re a ways from the camp but we should make good time if we go as the crow flies.” Burke starts running at a jogging pace, scanning the terrain ahead with her Infrared Tactical Monocle. You follow behind, making sure to keep up. “Let me know if you need a break or anything.”

“I’m good.”

More rockets fly out into the night sky then drop down into the swamp woods. You hear gunfire and Lizard screams far out to the east towards the edge of the swamp. Burke checks the map once more as the two of you walk, with you taking point. “How much farther?” You admit, you feel fatigue starting to ache at you from the injuries. Even keeping your left hand on your Carbine for support just feels strange to you.

“We’re about ten clicks from Hill 47, it’s to our northeast,” says Burke. “Those rockets are nowhere near the camp. But they’ll sure as hell spook Lieutenant Harrell and company.” You noticed that too. Then you see another brace of rockets to the north east. They drop down and light up the area briefly, like thunder strikes in the distance. “Those were definitely in the area though.”

“They’re attacking the camp?” you ask.

“Probably not,” says Burke. “They shouldn’t know where the camp is. We made sure last time when we made that raid not to leave tracks going back to it directly. But…” She sighs, then stomps her foot. “Boo. You realize that this means going back for the transmitter is getting harder and harder every day, right?”

“I know,” you say. The thought of the transmitter not only being behind enemy lines but also having their lines constantly push on you is horrifying. Sure, you could get the transmitter. But there won’t be a safe LZ to land. Or you could hold out. But eventually those Lizards might actually find it. They might find some way to reverse engineer it. Or worse, they’ll scrap it without ever knowing what it was. Either way, you’re frakked.

Burke growls. “Cope frakked us.”

“He was doing what he thought was right-“

“Ah, bullshit what he thinks is right!” Burke hisses quietly. “The Lizards are getting closer and closer every day and we don’t have any avenue for escape! What are we going to do, build boats and go out to sea!? It’s getting harder and harder to believe that we might actually get off this planet, boo.”

> “You just have to have faith. We’ll find the transmitter and get out.”
> “Part of me actually agrees. We’ll have to talk about it back at camp.”

>> “Can we not have this discussion now? We’re still walking back to camp.”
I mean I agree that leaving the transmitter behind is a potentially fatal mistake but better we get back to camp and talk with our guys first if we're going to challenge both Cope and Harrell.
>>
>>3069520
I have a crazy idea:
What if we relocate the camp to the Deinos, then Burke and us go find the transmitter?
>>
If we move out to help the Deinos repel the Lizard attack, they may be willing to let us stay at their camp while Burke and us find the damn transmitter.
>>
>>3069520
>> “Part of me actually agrees. We’ll have to talk about it back at camp.”
>>3069590
>>3069637
It's a nice idea, but between the language barrier, more than half the tribe not wanting us there, and the rest of our not going to be up to the idea, we might have to put it on the backburner
>>
>>3069520
> “You just have to have faith. We’ll find the transmitter and get out.”
We will survive. Never think otherwise.
>>
> SOME COMBINATION OF EVERYTHING AGAIN

“Part of me agrees. But part of me also says we have to have faith too. We’ll find it. We’ll get out. We can have this discussion later,” you explain. You’re conflicted. Sergeant Cope’s decision to leave the transmitter behind is a serious mistake. But according to him, one he made with the best intentions. You just hope that it’s not fatal. The road to hell is paved with good intentions as they say.

“If we discuss it back at camp,” says Burke with an air of venom to her words, “we’ll just be running in circles. Harrell will want the transmitter. Sergeant Cope will want a new place to set up camp.” She looks back at you. “You know, Graves would’ve been much more merciful if she had just shot me in the face instead of the foot.”

“Don’t say that,” you say.

“I will,” she says. “I hate this idea of fighting the inevitable. This is -their- land. We’re surviving, not living. We do –not- belong here. Sooner or later, our luck is going to run out. The way things went with you, it might just come soon.” Burke stops, looking ahead. You stop too, looking at her.

“What. What do you see?” you ask.

She points ahead at a hill. A very oddly shaped hill actually. You squint, then pull down your tactical monocle. Through the infrared, you see a great big black mass, covered by trees, moss, and vegetation. Burke looks to you. That is definitely not a hill. The two of you step up closer to it.

Covered in moss, vegetation, and trees growing over it was a metallic black mass. It was rectangular in shape, and was the size of several tanks smashed together. It sat firmly in the ground, like… like a Starship. As you step closer, you see a break in the vegetation. A metal slab for some kind of hatch or door. Then you look down. Bootmarks. Tracks. They lead straight in there. Maybe your pilot went in there. Burke steps in front of you, aiming her DMR at the opening. “Best to check?” she asks.

“Might as well,” you say. You shout out, “Friendlies!”

“Friendlies!” you shout again.

Burke rolls her eyes. “Maybe we should knock-“ The door creaks. The two of you point your guns straight at it. Whatever is inside better respond back in plain old standard. No bullshit. You see nothing in the darkness. You turn on your Infrared and see a white head shaped blob peeking out from behind the door.

“… are ye humans!?” A female voice calls out to you from inside.

Burke blinks. “No! We’re frakking Lizards that just happen to talk!”
>>

[2/2]

“I don’t wanna take any chances!” she yells. “I can’t frakking see anything out there! I’m armed, so ya better not be bullshitting me, ya manky shites!” Burke looks at you, then nudges you.

“We’re soldiers from the 101st Division!” you explain. “We came to the swamp looking for cover! Who are you!?”

“Flight Sergeant Whitney! I was flying a Medevac and I splashed down on the beach!” she explains. “My co-pilot and crew chief were killed! I tried to take shelter for four days back in the Medevac but the tide kept washing the wreck away! But I found this… this amazing little place!”

“What is it?” asks Burke.

“It’s some kind of Starship by my reckoning! Must’ve been here for… nigh-on centuries by my guess given the advanced state of decay and the vegetation around it! But it’s sturdy and it’s out of the rain at least!” A starship? Here? Centuries? Okay. Little more information than you can currently process right now. “I haven’t explored all of it, but the interior’s actually fecking huge! I made some shelter here ground level! I’ve been here ever since, must’ve been the past three days?! Do ya two want in!? I gots food and water and… other stuff I guess.”

> Sure. Might be a safe place for the night.
> “Actually, you better come back with us. We have a larger group. We’re all well-armed and we’re well-supplied too.”
> “Stay there, we’ll be back for you.”

Sweet, a bug out position we can go to if we have to ditch the 4 or 5 guys who are counter productive to our survival back at camp!

At least stay the night and have a look around.
>>

No just Tierney.
>>
>>3069679
That's why I advocated for staying behind and fighting the lizards. Language barrier of all things is also not a problem if we can communicate in friggin stick figures. We meet up some the Deinos with the rest holding back, we then convey to them humans and Deinos fighting against the lizards in pictographs.

>>3070306

“Sure.” You look to Burke. She shrugs, agreeing quietly. Alright. Seems that’s a plan then. Stay for the night, then see if you can move her back to the camp. Or hell, maybe turn this place into your new camp. “We’re coming in, okay?”

“Alright! Come on, but make it quick! I heard a lot of explosions out over yonder!” The two of you approach, then see her. Flight Sergeant Whitney. She’s a fairly short woman. Her pilot attire is drastically customized, she wears only the olive drab undershirt with the sleeves rolled up over her shoulders, and her pants are dirty and stained with sand and mud. She still wears the round pilot helmet, but with a cracked visor. She shuts the door behind you, then turns on a heavy light lantern, which she hangs on a pipe running along the wall, revealing a bandaged cheek and some stray locks of brown hair coming down over her eyes. “Well, ain’t ya two just a lovely sight!” She looks at Burke. “… especially you.” Burke tilts her head, confused. “Er-… Listen, I gotta say, I’m glad to see you both. It was getting… quite lonely by meself and I was just about to go plum mad from the isolation! But you’ve done it! You’ve cured me of my sickness just by being here so saints be praised, ye?”

You nod, smiling at her. “This is Private Burke.”

Whitney nods. “How d’ya do?” Burke grunts. “Can I hug ya?” She approaches with open arms.

Then Burke shoves her back. “Don’t touch me.”

Whiney looks genuinely hurt at that, then she sniffs Burke. Right, Burke is still covered in scat. “… Oooh, okay. Point taken.” She looks at you. “But you, what’s your name?”

“It’s-…” You sigh. “Not important. Look.” Whiney makes a very confused face at that. “Listen. We have a larger group north of the river.” She grins, smiling. “We’re all well-armed, we’re well supplied. We have vehicles too.”

“Lovely! Come on, you can tell me all about it! Lemme show you where I live, yeah?” Whitney grabs your hand then starts leading you down the hallway. “I tell ya what. It’s been a horrific business being here by meself. Trying to teach myself how to hunt and how to do other things to self-sustain, fecking terrible business. I hate it.” You look around the dimly light hallway, lit up only by some glowsticks that Whiney must have pasted to the walls for illumination. This Starship is rustic, very rustic. You walk on grates which cover exposed piping. The metals themselves are a dark grey in coloration, and yet… they don’t seem to be any kind of metal you know. You knock on them. They sound completely solid. “Now before you ask, not sure if this Starship is operational. But there is minimal power being run. I’d guess the old generator still has some juice in it. I can get some lights and some of the doors working and even some atmospheric controls too.”

“What do you mean by that?” you ask.

“I can make a room hot or cold,” she remarks. Oh. “There’s controls in every room here. Like this one. Which happens to be mine.” Light comes out from a slightly ajar door. Whiney forces her Carbine stock into the crack then slowly pushes the door aside. Inside you see what appears to have been some kind of laboratory facility. There are desks and tables all throughout the center of the room, with flat charts on the walls written in some kind of language you don’t recognize. “From my guess, probably an old science ship that crashed here. This is ground level by the way. I haven’t explored downstairs much.”

“Groovy,” Burke mutters. “I don’t suppose it can take off?”

“Nah. But. The important thing for me is that it’s safe, there’s water downstairs from what I hear so I can boil that for pure water if I don’t want to go to the river for freshwater. And there’s bountiful food outside. I saw some trees growing weird yellow fruits at their tops.” She leads you around one desk and shows you a pile of those yellow fruits Red gave you earlier. “They taste delicious!”

“I know, I had one earlier,” you say.

Whitney grins. “Lovely!” She slaps your arm. “I think you and I are gonna get along shapely, yeah! Especially seeing as how we’re going to spending probably the rest of our lives here!”

Burke says, “Don’t be so sure. You probably got Cope’s transmission, right?”

“I did. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it out to Hill 47,” she says. “Alone. Afraid. Surrounded by savages. And a poor nubile young woman such as myself would last five minutes. This is a job for you two groundpounders, yeah.”

“Well, Sergeant Cope has- or did have an Orbital Transmitter. We were planning to retrieve it once we got back to camp,” you explain. Whitney laughs at that. Why is she laughing? She looks at you two, laughing. And slowly she stops laughing.

“Ahaha.” She blinks, her smile dropping considerably as she realizes your confusion. “I mean. I thought you’d have scrapped those for parts long ago by now considering…”

“Considering what?” you ask.

Whitney blinks again, placing her carbine down. “… do you two not know?” Know what? “Oh my fecking goodness, they- you…” She steps back, horror coming across her face. “You don’t know do you? Did none of you ever wonder why the Fleet never sent scouts or anything down to the surface to check?”

“Okay, enough with the frakking riddles!” yells Burke. “What don’t we know!?”
>>
She pauses, then sits up on one of the desks. She clears her throat, as if trying to figure out what she’s going to say before she says it. Finally, she relents. “When I was stuck in the Medevac wreck, my communications were still working. I was able to send messages and receive from upstairs until… I dunno, two days after the night of the invasion? I was requesting Evac for all of those days.” What does she mean? “I had a friend up there. She let me in on what was happening.” What is she talking about?

“The Fleet left the planet system days ago.” Your hair stands on end. Your heart sinks to your feet. Whitney places her hands in her lap, twiddling her thumbs together. Burke steps back, as if the words themselves shoved her with their weight. “They’re not coming back for us.”

Well double fuck, maybe we SHOULD look into ways on getting the hunk of junk spaceborne. This is also definitely something to bring up with Sergeant Cope since I suddenly have this feeling that he's known all along and didn't want to let anyone in on it so the command structure didn't entirely disintegrate.

I'm kinda surprised, QM. I thought for sure getting the transmitter and evaced would've been the endgame for the quest. This just essentially drastically increased the length of the whole story.
