In the far future, biotechnology advances by leaps and bounds, creating stunning achievements in medical, civil, and military applications. Illness becomes a thing of the past, and genetic modification is as commonplace as cosmetic surgery.

However, like all great advances, unchecked progress and experimentation has led to abuse and corruption. Ultra powerful megacorporations that monopolized the latest biotech have risen to be the great powers of the age, waging secret wars of sabotage, espionage, and deceit to get ahead of each other.

In order to fuel their rampant growth, megacorps develop lethal diseases and viruses, horrific bio-organic abominations, and ever more exotic genetic modifications to both sell to the highest bidder and unleash upon each other.

The rampant proliferation of bioweapons, and the need to contain them, has given rise to a new profession, the BIOWEAPON HUNTER.

You are LEWIS, a Hunter specializing in hunting down biological threats with your T-Doll companion HK!

Currently, you were riding in a helicopter with Lucina's parents, Leo and Egan, as Egan performed the final medical checkups on you. Like Mom and Carol, it seemed Leo and Egan were privy to your... status as some sort of Magical Boy/Invader hybrid in a similar vein to Carol.

You still weren't quite used to that.

Lucina, however wan't present. She had to take her car back to station, after all. Plus, you were sure that Egan wouldn't have wanted her aboard anyways, given the subjects you were discussing.

"So, the official story I'll submit is that you suffered from sudden biomod rejection syndrome which required immediate, but specialized treatment by me." Egan drones on as she hands you a lollipop. "I'm a registered biomod technician so all the paperwork will be as genuine as it can get."

"Thanks." You mumble.

"Anyways, it'll still be about an hour until we reach Raccoon City." Egan shrugs "If you want to take a nap, now's the time."

Meanwhile, HK sits close to your side, always on guard.

"So, Auntie Egan." You turn to your super genius scientist. "You were the one who invented T-Dolls, right?"

"Well, yes and no." Egan shrugs as she casually taps away at her laptop. "Doll technology has always been around, but the AI controlling them was.... rudimentary at best. Only able to follow basic commands and programmed routines. No capability of autonomy. So housework and... 'special services' was all there were good for."

"Well, that's not the case now." You look to HK, who just nods silently.

"Well, that's where I came in, I suppose." Egan says coolly, almost as if she completely disinterested. "I patented the digital mindmap, which increased Doll processing power by orders of magnitude, allowing them to process more advanced algorithms."

"And, you licensed the tech out to all the major robotics manufacturers." You conclude.

"They were looking for a way to get an edge over the biotech firms." Egan nods. "I suppose you can say I stumbled into an untapped market. I sort of just did it because I thought it would be interesting."

"Auntie, I'm basically a walking secret myself, you know." You point out. "I'm pretty sure I can keep my lips sealed on this."

"Hm, well, I suppose." Egan nods and the glances a HK. She raises her hand and makes an odd gesture.

HK immediately freezes, stuck in place like a statue.

"What did you-"

"Just a little precaution. Don't want T-Dolls knowing too much about their own inner workings, you know?" Egan says calmly.

"But how?"

"It would be silly not to put in a few backdoors in the systems I design." Egan cracks a wry grin. "After all, mad scientists seem to have the bad habit of their creations turning on them."

"She's my partner. And a friend." You say simply, crossing your arms.

"Interesting. Almost the same exact answer Lucina gave regarding ST-AR." Egan nods and taps away rapidly at her laptop. "It seems that the emotional simulation software packages are working far more effectively than intended-"

"Auntie." You cough, trying to regain her attention. She was going off track again, as brilliant but eccentric scientists like her were wont to do.

"Ah, right." Egan doesn't even miss a beat. "I apologize. I'll refrain from using master commands on her in the future. As for your question..."

Egan closes her laptop and looks right at you, giving you her full attention.

"A human mind, even a simulation of one, isn't something you can simply build out of scratch or conjure from nowhere. You need a starting point. A starting template."

Egan points to HK's frozen head.

"The secret to the digital mindmap is that it's a neural template based off a complete and thorough scan of a living human's brain activity. This provides us the necessary jumping to point to allow T-Dolls to 'mature' and organically gain combat experience and autonomous function."

"And these scans..."

"Destroy the brain in the process." Egan finishes. "Don't worry, they were all volunteers who understood the consequences. Most were terminally ill while others had differing motivations."

"So... HK is a copy of a real person?" You gasp.

"Not a copy." Egan shakes her head. "Perfect 1:1 transfer of memories is impossible. She's simply based off a template. She may develop behaviors or habits similar to her original donor, but she's not identical in any fashion."

You glance back at HK, her emerald eyes still frozen and wide open.

"That's, pretty amazing, honestly." You blink. You never would have thought this would be how T-Dolls gained their... well... humanity.

"Of course, you can't breathe a word of this to anybody outside the two of us." Egan continues calmly. "Not only would we both get into huge legal trouble, but people don't ask where this T-Doll technology comes from and they certainly don't need to know."

"I understand, Auntie." You nod. "Thanks for telling me."

"Well, I managed to extract quite a bit of useful data from your vitals, so it's all good." Egan shrugs.

"Wait what-"

"With your mother's permission." Egan finishes.

Damnit, Mom...

"Anyways, I'll unlock HK, unless you have any more questions?" Egan asks.

You pause. Well, there was one. You can't help but think. If T-Dolls were based off a human template, then who was HK based off of...?

Nah, on second thought, the identity of HK's template didn't seem to matter. Honestly, HK was her own 'person' at this point. With her own quirks and experiences. Knowing the person she was based off of just didn't feel relevant at this point.

"No, I'm good." You say.

"All right." Egan nods and snaps her fingers. HK suddenly becomes active again as if nothing happened.

"Lewis, my GPS is reading that we are nearing our destination." HK informs you.

"Yeah, we're reaching the outer limits of Raccoon now." Egan points out the window, and sure enough, you could see the city's skyline on the horizon. "Where do want us to land you?"

"Just drop me off at my office. Can't be on sick leave forever." You sigh.

"Right." Egan nods. "You hear him, Leo?"

"Of course I did. We'll be there in no time!" He replies.

Sure enough, it only takes a few minutes for the helicopter to touch down on the office helipad. You give Auntie Egan and Uncle Leo on last farewell wave as you and HK disembark.

And, as expected, the Boss is already waiting for you on the helipad.

"Uhhhh, hey Boss." You saw awkwardly. "Uh, long time no see?"

"TOO long!" The Boss grunts and shoves a tablet into your hands. "You're lucky Wesker decided to wire the funds directly to us! It's been keeping us afloat for now, but we. need. jobs. So get on it!"

"Right, right." You sigh. Already missing the ranch.

Then again, it feels like it's been too long since you've had some proper work.

"So what mission will we have?" HK asks curiously.

"Um, let's find out." You say as you flip through the tablet.

REPO MAN: GeneCo has posted an open contract on a customer has refused to repay their loans on several high grade organs he had purchased. The customer in question apparently has underworld contacts and has gone into hiding. Customer must be brought back physically intact.

ACADEMIC ESPIONAGE: An anonymous client is seeking the seizure of important data from the Raccoon City University campus. The campus lab in question is under tight security by private forces so caution is advised.

WILLAMETTE EXTRACTION: The BSAA is seeking volunteers to accompany an expedition into the Willamette Dead Zone to track down, apprehend, and extract a group of civilians that breached the military perimeter.

"Hm, I guess we can do a bit of paid public service." You shrug.

"BSAA." HK notes as she glances at the mission briefing. "The Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance? What need would they have for Hunters?"

"Hey, even government agencies need expendable muscle from time to time." You shrug. "Still, the Willamette Dead Zone is not exactly my idea of a nice, chill job to get back in the groove, but we can't ignore the pay they're offering.

The Willamette Dead Zone was... not exactly a nice place. It was one of the first, largest, and deadliest biocontainment disasters in the history of the continental United States. Practically overnight, the entire city of over 100,000 people were either dead or shambling horrors wandering the devastated streets, infected by a massive spill of Umbrella T and G viruses. The entire city was swiftly cordoned off by the military, but many of the biotech megacorps blocked the government's plans on bombing the area into ash, citing that even this disaster could yield valuable research data and samples, like some sort of self contained, contaminated ecosystem. Occasionally, science teams would venture in gather data on the long term effects the T and G viruses had on the environment.

This naturally led to conspiracy theories that the viruses were deliberately released, and there's been no shortage of crackpot reporters and activists trying to sneak into the ruins of the city to find "evidence". Naturally, most of them didn't even make it past the perimeter, and the few that did were mostly written off as lost.

Still, you wondered why the BSAA of all organizations would be going out of their way to rescue a bunch of these idiots.

"Is that so?" Nemo yawns again. "Well, THI did send over some upgrade kits they wanted tested out. Let's see what they've got...

"Well, I'd like something that would help out HK's offensive capability." You say. "She's a bit limited in what she can output with just what she can conventionally carry, you know?"

"I completely understand." Nemo nods drowsily as she digs through several boxes. "Hmmmm, I might have a few things we might be able to use..."

SIDEARM: Typically, most sidearms are made to be light enough for regular humans to carry and handle. These are the largest limiting factors since increases in caliber in such small weapons make them impractical in combat. T-Dolls, however, have enough strength and resilience to ignore such limitations, allowing them carry sidearms with greater weight and stopping power than conventional handguns.

MELEE WEAPON: HK's model line allows for the installation and use of various melee weapons in the event close combat becomes necessary.

EXTERNAL WEAPON PACK: HK's model line is compatible with military grade exo-weapons normally reserved for armored BOWs.

"What about those?" You ask, pointing to a particular set of boxes.

"Ah, external weapon packs." Nemo nods as she shuffles over. "They were originally designed to be addon weapons to military BOWs. It was exceedingly easy to convert some of them to function with T-Dolls as well."

LIBERATOR WRIST ROCKET LAUNCHER: A pair of wrist mounted launchers that can each launch a powerful armor piercing rocket. Highly effective against large, heavily armored targets. However, reach launcher is single use only, and takes a long time to reload.

TYPHOON GRENADE LAUNCHING SYSTEM: A backpack mounted grenade launcher that launches grenades over the wearer's shoulder via retractable firing tube. Allows for indirect fire, but the range is relatively short.

BARRET HEAVY RIFLE SYSTEM: A backpack mounted 20mm anti-material rifle that can deploy to fire over the user's shoulder. Can provide long range precision fire. However lack of stabilization means loss of accuracy if firing on the move.

"How about that?" You point to the box holding the Typoon mounted grenade launcher. It never hurt to have a little more access to more boom, especially against swarms of small and fast BOWs.

"Ah, the Typhoon." Nemo nods. "I can get started on the installation right now."

"Great." You nod.

"I appreciate your willingness to upgrade my parameters." HK says as she bows her head to you. "Thank you."

"Don't mention it. Gotta make sure that you stay a step ahead of the BOWs we're facing, right?" You grin.

"Correct." HK nods.

"Well, this will take a while." Nemo grunts as she tears the box open. "You can go along and dtake care of some other things while you wait."

"All right, I'll leave you to it, then." You say as you take your leave. "I gotta talk with Artya about something, anyways."

"See you later." Nemo yawns as she motions for HK to sit down on the work bench. "Now, the system is modular, but we're still going to need to make sure the required firmware is properly installed...."

Meanwhile, you remember the military grade biomod that Vahlen provided to you. With Nemo busy tinkering with HK, the only other person in the office with the specialized knowledge about biomods would be Artya, your resident cleaner.

You take the elevator down to the sublevel where Artya made herself at home at, Biohazard Disposal. It was here that exotic materials you salvaged or recovered from missions were sanitized, processed, or otherwise destroyed.

Artya was currently hacking apart what looked to be a dead Tyrant with a chainsaw, slicing its body apart into more manageable chunks when she catches sight of you. She happily skips over, tapping away at her tablet.

HI LEWIS YOU OKAY?

"Never better, Artya." You chuckle.

Artya then tilts her head to the side, staring at you from behind her biohazard mask before rapidly typing again.

"I... got some new biomods. From Nemo's mom." You say.

It wasn't a total lie, and this was your official cover story, after all. You had forgetten how Artya seemed to have a keen nose for biomods. Whether it was some sort of keen talent on her part or some sort of biomod itself, you weren't too sure.

You hold out the vial of black liquid, and Artya quickly snatches it up, staring at it with wonder.

THIS IS HIGH QUALITY STUFF. WHO'D YOU KILL TO GET IT?

"It's payment." You sigh. "I just wanted you to check it out to see if it's legit."

Artya nods and types.

I CAN DO THAT.

Artya shuffles over to her own little "lab", which was a bit more crude and improvised than Nemo's, but the cleaner still somehow seemed to make it work. She places the vial in one of the many machines and presses a few keys on it.

SCAN WILL TAKE A WHILE. I'LL LET YOU KNOW WHAT I FIND.

"Thanks a lot, Artya." You grin.

AND BRING BACK SOME NEW SPECIMENS ALREADY. I'M GETTING BORED.

"Yeah, yeah." You chuckle at Artya's chiding. "I'll do my best."

With your current business done, you head back up to the main office level, where you happen to run into the Boss in the middle of a video call.

"Oh, Lewis, just in the nick of time!" The Boss smiles and motions to the main screen. "I was just talking to your BSAA contact on the ground!"

On the screen, you could see a dark haired woman, tall and imposing, with one of her arms being a robotic prosthetic. That in itself was odd, considering how easy it was to regrow limbs and organs these days. This suggested this woman in particular either had a certain medical condition, or had a deep mistrust of biotech.

"Hey there." The woman gives a humorless smile. "Commander Melissa Edwards, BSAA. Looks like we'll be working together in this hellhole here."

Well, that was something...

When we get free time from missions, and covering our tracks, we should probably practice using our powers.

I kinda want to see some more time powers like increasing a weapon's rate of fire by accelerating how fast it operates, making zones of slowed time, or even bringing another person into stopped time.

You step out of the helicopter, coming face to face with the Willamette Dead Zone.

Well, technically, you were just outside of it, at a military camp placed just outside the perimeter wall that stretched as far as the eye could see. This barrier of armored steel was the last line of defense against the horrors within breaking out, and the first line against those foolish enough to try and sneak into the city.

The base itself wasn't anything too special. Just a cluster of prefabricated structures. Barracks, motor pools, a command center, and just about everything else needed to keep a military outpost running. Thankfully, Melissa, the BSAA agent in overall command of this op, had already given you clearance to enter the base.

As you step off the helicopter, HK follows close behind, her newly installed Typhoon ordnance dispenser mounted on her back. From what Nemo told you, it was wirelessly connected to HK, allowing her to command the weapon with her own thoughts. You were sure it would become useful.

"Where shall we proceed?" HK asks.

Well, you were supposed to be heading to the muster point where everybody would be briefed. However, you still had a little extra time...

"Come on, let's not miss the briefing." You say as you head over to the muster point.

HK merely nods and follows you.

Upon reaching the muster point, you could see there was a decent mix of both BSAA personnel and Hunters, both groups being rather easy to distinguish, given the various Hunters didn't have standardized uniforms like these BSAA grunts.

And at the head of the gathering was Melissa herself, her arms crossed in a commanding pose and standing on a raised stage, her prosthetic arm and leg unhidden and clear to be seen by all.

"Well well, looks like you all decided to show up." Melissa grins. "I suppose you've all gotten the gist of why you're here, so I'll skip straight to the point. This is a search and rescue op for a group of civvies that have broken into the Dead Zone. It's very likely that we'll have to fight whatever the hell's in there, but that's what you Hunters are here for."

Melissa points her thumb to the screen behind her, showing a map of the city.

"You guys ill be dropped along various points of the Dead Zone. Make some noise and take out some dead fuckers. The idea is to draw them away from the city center so my team can swoop in and get the job done. Any questions?"

Well, that seemed.... simple enough. However, you could see quite a few of the gathered Hunters murmuring to each other. There was one thought going through all their minds, you could tell.

You don't say anything, and neither do any of the other Hunters, and Melissa continues on.

"You'll be dropped at various points around the city. Just do your thing and don't get yourself killed."

You glance at the map to look at the deployments. You immediately saw that the BSAA was focusing their search efforts around the Willamette wall, a sprawling mini-city in itself, while the Hunters were being distributed among various strategic points around the city.

As you look around, you could already see some Hunters grouping up in pairs or small squads. Given the nature of this mission, cooperation was natural, but then again, these guys were just as much rivals as they were colleagues...

You don't approach any of the Hunter groups. You feel confident enough with HK watching your back, and you didn't fully trust all these guys, either. HK thankfully is pretty useful in here, as her cold stare seems to ward away anybody thinking about approach you two.

You take the time to examine the map for all of the strategic drop points.

There was the suburbs, which afforded a nice combination of cover and open space, favoring midrange battle. However, the tight clusters of houses also made it a good place for hostiles to hide, making every corner a potential ambush.

Then there was the Willamette Zoo and park. This area was generally wide open, giving good range and sightlines. However, there were rumors of particularly large and nasty monsters roaming that area. The remains of the animals that had once called the place home.

Finally, there was the downtown area. A thick, tightly clustered center of multistory buildings and towers. It was a veritable maze, and one of the thickest concentrations of BOWs. But the roofs there provided relative safety from them, apart from any nasty surprises.

And well... there was the mall itself the BSAA was heading too. Something seemed off about this whole thing, honestly. This wasn't the first time some naive punks snuck into the Dead Zone. Why was the BSAA making such a fuss about this particular incident? Maybe that area warranted investigation?

"HK." You whisper to your android partner. "Something's up here. I think we should check out why the BSAA is so interested in the Mall."

"Affirmative." HK nods. "However, we won't be able to insert directly on the Mall for obvious reasons. We will need to find an alternate entry."

"Any suggestions?" You ask HK.

"The only two alternatives would be to make our way to the Mall overland, either by foot or on vehicle. Or, we enter Willamette's underground sewer system and enter from there. I already have the blueprints downloaded."

Hm, well, going overland was simple like HK said, but it would definitely attract attention. Especially the human kind. Sure, organization may break down the moment contact with the enemy was made, but still, it was risk.

But then again, the sewers weren't a great option, either. Nobody knew the status of the underground tunnels, and it was very likely they were infested with infected residents and... whatever the hell else was living down there...

You pick out the shotgun. Nice, reliable, and deadly effective in close quarters. It would do for this particular mission.

"It looks like everybody is moving out." HK points out.

Sure enough, all of the BSAA personnel and Hunters were boarding various jeeps and trucks, ready to head out to the singular gate leading into the dead zone. You and HK hurry over to claim a vehicle.

From the remaining vehicles, you could see tiny and fast ATVs, several light, open topped jeeps, or their larger, fully enclosed and armored utility vehicles.

"Come on, HK!" You wave for her to follow you to one of the remaining ATVs. Being small and light, it could go practically anywhere at a reasonable speed. With the tradeoff of having pretty much zero protection, but still, speed was a form of armor, right?

And it had enough space to hold two people. One driver and one passenger, who could double as a gunner.

"Affirmative." HK nods. "Will you be driving?"

I'm oddly reminded of how shit the Marine AI was in the Halo series but god tier when it came to shooting.
The reason why I'm bringing it up is because HK crit failed the last driving segment. And because the AI creation method is similar to Halo's method of Smart AI creation.
How much do you wanna bet HK's gonna crit success the shooting segment?

"All right everyone, we're moving out!" Melissa barks over the radio. "Head to your assigned sectors and raise some hell!"

There's a scattering of cheers and shouts as the gate into the Dead Zone swings open. Soon enough, dozens of vehicles scatter and disperse across the landscape, moving at full speed. Almost instantly, you could hear gunfire from the more trigger happy Hunters as they make good on their promise to create a ruckus.

"Lewis, I've run a scan on the map of the area." HK says calmly. "I've found two possible points of entry."

"Really? Where?" You ask as concentrate on the controls of the ATV. It didn't have much suspension so you had to be careful not to flip or roll it over.

"There's a service manhole two kilometers from here that we can enter, but we won't be able to take the vehicle with us." HK explains. "There's a drainage channel closer to the city center that leads directly into the underground sewers, and it's large enough to accomodate our vehicle, but we'll have a farther distance to drive."

I'm half tempted to specify that we go on foot in the Drainage Channels but then I realized that if it's big enough to fit our ATV in then there's probably big enough things in there than can outrun us if we were on foot.

You see HK's arm point in the direction to go and you veer your ATV to match the heading before throttling up at full speed.

Your little ATV blasts forward across the desolated landscape, heading right into hell itself.

"Lewis, we have incoming." HK warns you.

"Infected?" You ask.

"No. Hunters." HK states. "Two closed top jeeps and one motorcycle closing in from behind."

You take a quick glance over your shoulder, and sure enough, you can see three vehicles approaching from behind, and you were getting the ugly feeling that they were tailing you.

"Driving behavior is suspicious. Threat index at 36%." HK states. "What is the course of action?"

You rev the engine and push the throttle. Your ATV was light and fast, and should be able to outrun the heavier jeeps. The motorcycle would probably be a tougher bet, but you had to try. You were in no mood for a confrontation right now.

One of the jeeps begins to fall behind, but the other jeep and the motorcycle manage to keep pace, with the motorcycle actually gaining steadily. Looks like you weren't going to be getting away from these guys any time soon.

"Orders, Lewis?" HK asks as she flicks the safety of her rifle off.

Up ahead, you could see the ground dipping down into a large, concrete drainage channel, the structure leading to your destination.

Acting on a hunch, you activate your Time Stop ability, the entire worldly seemingly freezing all around you.

And it's then that you see it. A path that you can take to vault over a pile of wrecked vehicles and land right into the drainage channel, completely bypassing the obstacle. Your pursuers would have no choice but to stop or go around this particular hazard, giving you the time you would need to shake them off in the sewers.

At least, that was the idea.

Satisfied, you let time flow again, the color and sound rushing back to like a tsunami. You veer your ATV further to the right, running it straight off an angled, makeshift ramp of boards. The ATV jostles and jumps, and there's a brief feeling of weightlessness as the vehicle gangs some airtime before slamming back down onto the concrete channel with a loud THUD.

You don't even bother checking if pursuit behind you as you throttle up and rocket the ATV into the sewer system proper, your vision immediately going dark.

"Enemy pursuit broken." HK reports.

Well, you may have escaped from set of enemies, but you're plunging into the den of another. Frying pans and fire, they say...
