General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.
Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

Pokemon:
Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roserade)
Dice (Feraligatr)
Sorbet (Vulpix)
Rotom (Rotom)

Location: The woods just outside of Terichi, the city of nightlife!

Recently: Herb talks a gang into a different approach, and the gang begins celebrating the spooky traditions of Halloween!

[It's going alright. Some decent leads, but nothing solid yet. Still, I'm hopeful. It's been rough. Long days, lots of people in my personal life needing favors in my spare time, and a few bumps and bruises from a series of clumsy actions, but nothing serious. I feel better for having survived it, even if I feel deprived of the joys like this quest.

I hope you get a good rest. A good night's sleep is a fantastic thing!]

“Where’s Jane?” Hana asks, confused.

You, Polu, Laki, and now Gobble exchange looks.

“That’s a good question.” Laki says.

“Come on guys.” Abigail rolls her eyes. “We’re not falling for it. I saw the looks on your faces. And Gardevoirs. You’re pulling something.”

“I honestly have no idea where she is.” Laki answers.

Everyone watches as Gobble and Dice begin to sniff the air. But it’s Cubone that spots her first. At least, you think that’s her.

“Jane?” You cautiously ask the dark figure just outside the campfire light.

She doesn’t answer. Slowly, carefully, you approach. But suddenly her face is lit up by a flashlight. You look back to see Hana holding it out. “Figured it was about time we got a couple.” She says, tossing you one.

How thoughtful! But your attention quickly turns back to Jane. It’s hard to tell in this light, even with the flashlights, but her eyes look glazed over. “Jane?”

Those glazed eyes do respond, though. She glances up at you.

“Jane. It’s Herb.”

“Prove it.” She demands, subtly leaning back so there’s a tree she can use for partial cover. Her eyes seem just as suspicious of the others, too

So, my bet is she’s seeing illusions like we just did.

Also, the Halloween episode reminded me: in the Pokémon anime, Santa Claus is a real guy and has shown up multiple times.

Does this mean all countries celebrate Christmas, since he travels all around the world, or has Fug declared Loanah a no-fly zone for other religious figures?

Is there a Pokémon Jesus? Was he Pokémon crucified?

“What are you talking about?” You ask. But even as your say the words, the look on her face tells you she isn't joking. Yet, just asking the question lowers her guard slightly. Maybe your tone was very Herb-like.

“Prove it.” She reiterates.

It’s now that you see she isn’t wearing her belt of pokeballs. She must have left it in the tent. That seems pretty unlike her.

Gobble moves forward, but she steps back when he does. You can hear whispering for the others behind, but they’re depending on you to handle it. Well, maybe not depending, but they seem confident in your judgement. It just always feels like everyone depends on you, sometimes.

“Well, I can tell you that those earrings are a good fit. They compliment the shape of your face, the colour of your eyes, and draw the eye away from your slightly uneven bangs. A simple hair clip could-”

“Alright!” She shouts. “You sound like him, but that doesn’t prove anything. Anyone can prattle on about fashion as if they know what they’re talking about.”

Well, that hurts, but you notice her fiddling with her bangs a bit, so maybe you accidentally hurt her feelings. “Okay. How about this. Remember when we were at the Ghost temple?”

She raises an eyebrow. “And?”

“And we had to hide.” You can feel the eyes of everyone behind you lasering into the back of your head. “So we were crammed in that closet.”

“Fine!” She throws her hands up, coming out. “You’re Herb!”

“And remmeber how we never finished Truth or Dare?”

“I said I believe you!” Her voice cracks a little. “And I’m...working on it!”

“Who did you think I was?” You ask again.

She looks embarrassed. “I don’t want to talk about it.” Her voice is quiet and low, and she keeps a watchful eye on everyone else. As she steps out a little closer, you can see the fake blood on her shirt. It’s too dark for the others to have seen it, yet. It’s convincing looking.

“I’m willing to listen if you ever do.” You whisper.

She looks into your eyes as she steps over a log. “...Another time.” There’s a feeling of comfort, there. But it only lasts for a second.

“Everything alright?” Laki asks, keeping the impatience from her voice the best she can.

“Well, it seems like the illusions the psychic girls pranked us with hit you too.” You say to Jane as you nod to Laki.

Jane grunts, looking angry. She storms passed you and to the psychic girls, giving them a very quick and shallow bow before letting them have it. “And which one of you do I have to thank for that?” Keira intercepts and starts to explain and calm the situation. You think Jane is more putting on a show to look angry to deflect attention from how scared she was acting a moment ago. Well, mostly.

“Alright.” You announce. “Who wants to carve some pineapples?”

“Oh, I alright diced them up for you.” Hana says, waving a knife. “They look delicious. What are we eating?”

“I-...oh.” You try not to show too much disappointment.

“I’m kidding!” Hana laughs. “I know Halloween. I’ve only seen like, every horror movie ever.”

Of course she does! You sigh. But wait. The way she said it. “Have you never gone trick or treating?”

She smiles, but sadly. “Well, they tried at the hospital, but most of the kids weren’t super mobile, so it was more like they were just delivering candy to us.”

Huh. That gives you something to think about as you ready your pineapple. Everyone examines theirs to try to figure out what sort of face they want to make.

Since you’ve got a lot of experience cutting up squashes, you’re very confident in your ability to do something artistic.

What’s something that best reflects the spirit of Halloween to you?

Since it is Halloween, and you rarely get to express anything too scary, you decide to dive right in. This is going to be the spookiest face you can manage. Now, a cut here, small incision there, a quick carve on this side. It comes along nicely. Like fashion, it’s all about the angles and lighting.

Whoo. Alright. All done. You light the tiny candle inside.

“What do you think?” You ask Hana.

“I- YEEEZ!” She jumps back, dropping her pineapple. Her arms reach out to catch it, but she juggles in the air instead. That is, until her metal hand goes too far, too fast, and explodes the bottom half. “Scary.” She laughs in embarrassment, and wipes her wet metal hand on a tree. Dice sniffs it out and begins licking it, not caring about the bark.

“Woah! Mr. Mime from Goldentop’s point of view.” Abigail says. “Good job.”

The others all present theirs. You’re a little proud at the compliments that come your way. Most of them are pretty generic. You notice Jane’s looks like a dragon face, though. The psychic temple girls all have an identical one.

“Boom, bro!” Polu presents his. It’s a strange series of cuts you can’t make sense of. “Check it out. It means ‘missed big wave.’”

“Scariest thing you could think of, huh?” Laki smirks.

“Yup!” Polu says with pride.

All the pineapples are lit and set up around the area, and you settle in around the campfire.

“What now?” Keira asks, excited and eager.

“Good job, Mace. Very...round.” You compliment. He didn’t draw a face, but instead he’s been very methodically and carefully carving down his pineapple into a perfect, wet sphere. Except he doesn’t seem satisfied. He keeps slowly whittling it down to fine tune the edges that look perfectly round to your eyes. Dice takes a break to examine it, but frustrated, renews his carving.

Sorbet comes along and examines it for a moment too. She opens her mouth, and freezes it in place, keeping the wetness from making it droop.

“Alright everybody. We’ll tell some scary stories. But first, let’s have smores!”

Everyone who knows what a smore is lights up. Graham crackers, chocolate, marshmallows, and sticks are quickly passed round as you settle in next to Jane.

“I’m guessing you want to talk.”

“If you do.” You say, setting up your marshmallow.

She sighs. But surprisingly to you, seems to relax a little after. “It wasn’t what those psychics did. Although that wrecked my concentration and let it come in again. I’ve been getting visits.”

“Visits?”

“From the...being that we saw before. The one looking for a champion. It’s come to me in a few forms now, stronger each time. It comes in different forms, sometimes, hoping to talk me into helping it.”

You almost burn your marshmallow.

Almost.

“Help you do what?”

“It wants me to get down below the water, in the great portal to the spirit world.”

“Why?” You concentrate on rotating your marshmallow, keeping the heat even. Doing that simple task helps you focus and think. “What’s the goal?”

“I don’t know.” She says. “There’s something down there that it wants. I’ve gotten good at pushing it away, but I think when it can’t get through to me, it just looks for others instead. But not many people fit...whatever requirement it needs.” She looks up at you with pleading eyes. “Sometimes I can’t keep it away, though.”

You catch Laki’s eyes from across the fire. She seems to want to know if everything’s alright. You’re sure Hana would do the same thing too, if she and Polu weren’t busy dealing with small marshmallow fires.

You give her a gentle, encouraging smile, then look back to Jane. “We’ll work on meditation techniques tonight, if you’re up for it. We can even talk to the other one. I think we’re owed some answers.”

“I shouldn’t be involving you.” She rotates her own marshmallow.

“You didn’t involve me. The being did. Even if you did though, I’d want to be involved.

It’s odd. As much as Jane tends to grate your cheese sometimes, she’s got a sense of honor and duty that’s always been very comforting. But it’s also worrying. She’s putting her own needs so far behind what she thinks is her obligation to others that you’re concerned about her wellbeing. You wish you knew how to express that to her. It’s ironic that this part of her nature is more stressful than if she’d just ask for help more or be a little more selfish when it comes to this stuff.

It’s so odd that she can’t see that, but you suppose those sorts of things are easier to see from the outside than within.

“You would, wouldn't you.” The words are normal, but the tone is different. There’s a subtle hint of...not anger.

“Bro, you going to eat yours?”

You look at the marshmallow you’ve been carefully heating over the fire. It’s a nearly perfectly even golden brown. You’re better at this when you’re not paying attention than when you are. You quickly assemble your smore, avoiding getting too much melty stuff on your fingers.

“Listen up, scaredy Skittys!” Abigail announces, standing on her log-seat. “I’ve got a tale of horror and scares for you.”

“We’ll talk after.” Jane says.

Abigail shares a scary story about some place called Lavender town. It sounds made up. The group shares different scary tales. The psychic girls seem to want to take a pass on their turn, though.

“We’ve done enough scaring.” One says.

“Story telling isn’t a skill we’re versed in.”

“I’m not sure I understand this tradition.” Another follows, speaking a little more individually. “Why is fear encouraged?”

Rotom seems to stop buzzing about and freeze in the air. It's listening.

“Its health to explore these emotions sometimes. One day a year isn’t much to dedicate to that.” You say, sounding a bit apologetic about explaining your culture. You feel compelled to expand a bit. “In older times it was a festival to scare of malicious spirits that could cause harsh winters or other issues around this time like harvests and the like. The fear came with combatting the unknown. Like the pumpkins were meant to scare them off, for example.”

Polu and Keira both listen intently. Polu tries to hide his interest, and Keira keeps looking between you and the psychic girls with a smile while trying to read their reaction.

“Fascinating.” One says.

“A novel idea.”

“We’ve heard of a harsh winter, but it’s hard to imagine snow as threatening as a seasonal storm or tsunami.”

Keira looks relieved. She then wiggles in her seat and smiles, excited. “Herb tells me they have snow like on Eelilee for miles and miles during winter. Vast plains of it. It lasts for months.”

They whisper among each other, then look at you with new eyes. You feel oddly naked.

“Oh boy, I need to show you some movies.” Hana says excitedly from their reaction to the snow. You’ve come to learn that pure snow is a sort of holy ground, in this region. You can understand why they’d be fascinated under that context.

They begin to pepper you with questions. They seem to have gotten the impression your entire culture is about fear, and overcoming it. It takes awhile to explain that Halloween is a unique holiday, and go over some of the others.

Hana recites a scary story to round out the night. You know she’s telling the story of a movie, but she does have a way of losing all her awkwardness when she’s talking to a crowd. The passion she has for it overwhelms any feeling of self-consciousness.

The campfire, and the energy of the night begins to fade.

As the night calms down and everyone begins to get ready for bed, you look towards Jane to plan how you’re going to help her.

“Congrats on the new pokemon.” Hana interrupts your thoughts, holding both her hands behind her back. “Seems like you always have a busy time.”

“Thanks.” You respond. You haven’t had much time to chat with her. She’s acting strange right now though, like she’s got something she wants to tell you. “Umm, did you have any troubles?”

“Nope.” Hana says. “I think they wanted any excuse to go explore. At least, after Keira met with them. I was just sort of there. And they said they’d be happy to help with Gardevoir. But they wanted to keep their psychic energy ready to search for Polu first. But umm, since we had to wait for them to get ready, I had a chance to shop for a bit. Neaka is a lot less conservative than Akaneki.” She looks down, blushing. “I have some of it on, underneath.” She winks. “I’ll be waiting in the tent. I don’t want to sound too needy, but it’s been a long few days and you’ve got me a bit hooked. I can’t wait.”

“Oh, umm, jeez, I’m sorry Hana.” You begin, then you explain about meditating with Jane. “But afterwards if you’re still up...”

She waves off your concern with frantic, embarrassed energy. “Oh no! I feel selfish now. It’s fine. I can wait.” She contradicts herself, flustered. She isn’t sure if she wants to give you a good night kiss, or hug, and fumbles into a handshake. “Umm, if I can help, let me know, okay?”

“Sure.” You appreciate the thought, and watch as she crawls into the small tent with Laki. But you don't know if there's much she can do to help with this.

“Ready?” You ask Jane. You aren’t sure how long she’s been standing behind you. She can walk very quietly.

“No such thing when it comes to this.” She says with a cold professionalism. She readies herself, and nods.

You and Jane father into her small tent to meditate. You’re fascinated at watching the little ritual she’s developed for it. You know she’s been meditating, and probably just as much as you, but she has much more preparation and mood-setting put into it. Candles, a special blanket for sitting on, and even a tiny little battery powered water fountain that makes a soft trickling noise.

“What?” She asks.

“Nothing. It’s just, you you put a lot of preparation into meditating.”

The annoyed look on her face is replaced with a slightly warmer, slightly less annoyed look. “And this surprises you?”

Was that...a joke about herself? She turns to light a candle before you can read more of her face.

The two of you sit down. Jane puts herself in a cross legged position, inhales deeply, the exhales. She opens her eyes again and looks to you as you hold the crystal Jeanine gave you and get ready. “I suppose since this is your idea, you should be in charge. How to we proceed?”

You take her hands. She almost jumps for a second. Her eyes slowly come back into focus, and her breathing slowly goes down again.

“Try to relax.” You advise her. This is going to take some time.

“You can’t ‘try’ to relax.” She mechanically snipes back. There’s no annoyance in her voice. She’s just operating on autopilot on that front.

You sit for a minute, but another idea comes to mind. “Hold on, let’s reposition.”

You adjust so you’re back to back, but still maintain the hand holding. Jane seems even less at ease now. Maybe it’s because she can’t see your face. Either way, you both close your eyes, listen to the sound of the fountain, and smell the special candles she’s brought. In your lap rests the crystal, just in case you need extra help.

As you begin to let go of your conscious thoughts, your mind drifts into...

You concentrate on your shared memories with Jane. From the little chat at the cafe, to times in the company of the others, to even the pokemon battles. Different memories of different events, and non-events, gently blanket over your mind. The time and experiences you’ve shared with her become the only thing in your world you can remember, for the moment. You’ve got her back, and she’s got yours. Like partners.

You both want to see it like family, but neither of you quite see family that way. For her, it’s more of a mystery or foreign entity that she can’t entirely trust, but wants to. She also feels guilty for not trying enough. And a strong sense of abandonment and being left to fend for herself, spiritually. For you, it’s about responsibility. Either being the mouth that needs feeding that your mom and dad fought about when money was tight, straining their relationship closer to the breaking point than anyone wants to admit, or being the one who needs to find a way to take up the cooking, the mending of clothes, and the unconditional love and attention that your brother needs. Sometimes your sister, too.

Four eyes squeeze out tears. But it’s not in sadness. It’s a relief of acknowledging and letting go of a small amount of resentment and guilt.

With Jane at your back, and you at hers, and the absolute trust and understand you share, you’re both ready to summon a God and have it answer to you.

You both steel yourself for the task at hand, and concentrate. Without needing to watch your own back, you peer into the void and examine it with more focus than you otherwise could alone without fear of becoming lost.

Where are you, great protector? Great being. Manipulator. Guardian. Pancake eater.

You feel a sudden tug from the waking world. A physical sensation. Your hand being squeezed, maybe. Jane sense something. Danger. But it passes. It was a set of eyes in the far off ether that now vanishes.

You redouble your focus and watch and concentrate on your side of things. And you feel a familiar presence. You recognize it, but still, the overwhelming power and sheer force of presence was something you weren’t quite ready for. The gaze feels almost physically heavy. You are like a Caterpie under the eye of a Fearow.

You don’t fall back though. Jane is there, supporting you.

It doesn’t get too close, instead, circling you. You’re unsure of the intent, or which one this is. The aura it’s projecting is full of power and fierceness, and something else hidden below, but you can’t tell if that’s directed to you or not.

>Keep still and ready with Jane. Let it make the first move

You keep still and ready with Jane, maintaining the protective meditation posture. You both keep a strong front while the being circles you both, examining and watching. It seems to be taking you in.

The size and power is much more than you remember. It seems to be stronger than you last saw it. It’s ability to carry around its own weight and power in this plane is unsettling. Like watching a storm, concentrated into the size and shape of a train, and with a will of its own, sizing you up. The primal fear of a force of nature examining your very soul is nearly overwhelming.

It’s hard to tell if you’re squeezing Jane’s hand, or if she’s squeezing yours. Fear ripples through both of you. But both of you contain and tame it together, without blame or the desire to examine who contributed more. You steady each other, and nothing can knock you down.

“Your courage and power grows.” You feel the voice echo. That seems different from before too. Much stronger. “You have summoned my attention. Why? I have important concerns”

“Congratulations on recovering so much.” You start out.

“Many have contributed sacrifices on my behalf.” It says, with a heavy heart.

“Sacrifices?” Jane asks, suddenly almost as scary as the being was a moment ago.

The huge face stops it’s swimming and turns on her. Your hand might need medical attention after this. But it’s not anger. It’s fear in it’s own face, now. She’s struck at a nerve. “That is not my desire, nor what transpired. The lives of humans are precious, and I will protect them.”

Jane keeps her gaze steady, just barely.

“We had some questions.” You change the subject. “Jane has been visited. By...someone fitting your description.”

The being turns to face you, then swims back around to her again. It’s giving you it’s full attention.

Jane explains about the visits in more detail. That it’s asking her to do things for her, and the feeling she gets. She seems suspicious of this one the entire time, but trusts you trusting it.

“So we’ve come for answers. I think...we deserve some.” You say.

“The truth.” Jane emphasis.

The being hesitates. “I have no desire to lie to you.”

“But you don’t want to tell us, either.” She accuses.

The being averts it’s gaze, just a little, and just for a second.

“Please.” You ask. “Jane can’t sleep.”

“I have larger concerns.” It sounds a bit annoyed.

“My friend’s health is my biggest concern.” You inform it. “And since you’re the one who brought this into our lives, I think you owe us some answers. If there are some things you must keep secret, I understand. But please, tell us what you can, and what Jane needs to be secure. I know it must be personal. But Loanah is my home now. My family is here. I need to protect them too.”

The being swims around you some more, thinking. It takes it’s time, ignoring your presence and reflecting on the situation. It turns to Jane.

“Ask your questions.”

“Who are you?”

“I am...Some call me the Great Protector.”

“Are you?” She asks, more curious than pointedly.

“I have taken that role.” It selects the words carefully.

“What does the other one want with Jane?” Although you don’t feel under threat, being without Jane at your back would make you feel too insignificant to ask question.

It swims around the two of you. “The same as I do. He needs champions to further his cause. To help it regain strength, and return to this world, fully.”

“Who is he?” You follow up, curious. “What’s his story?”

The being hesitates for a long time. Swimming around, having a conversation in it’s own head as it decides how to answer. “Don’t think too poorly of him. He was different, before. He cared deeply for all those around him. Too deeply. He was accused of spreading his love too thinly by a jealous fool, and he paid for their flaws.”

“You’re holding something back.” You observe.

“Hiding something.” Jane accuses.

“Yes.” It agrees, openly. “I am.”

There’s a long silence.

Jane breaks it. “Herb...Herb is someone you can talk to, about things you’re ashamed of. He’s someone who anyone can trust.”

The being considers her, and you, once again. As it looks down at you, you feel a strange sensation overtake you, and suddenly you’re in the sky, high above the islands.

No, the island. One giant, barely touching landmass, only vaguely holding the shape of the region. And gigantic meteor is rushing down from the sky. You’ve sent it! You’re going to wipe them out. These stupid insects that have taken your love from you. These insignificant, deceptive, unworthy lifeforms that have ruined what you had. Then everything will be back. He will be back to only loving you.

You watch, filled with rage, jealousy, and a detached horror at your own actions. But you’re committed now, and it has to be done. The rocky and sudden death you’ve dropped on them will strike soon, and it will all be over, and he will come to understand.

No! What is he doing! He’s flying out to stop it! To meet it!

You and he wrestle. He doesn’t understand why you’d do this. That enrages you. Part of why you’re doing this is to make him understand! Make him see! They’ve put a spell under him with their honeyed words and manipulative ways. You’re freeing him, and his loyalty, to come back to only you.

The fighting is vicious and savage. But as he tries to stop you ad the meteor, you have the advantage. You can overpower him, injure him if you have to, and answer for your crime of passion after.

But somehow, he gains the advantage instead. As you try to make him see things from your point of view, he strikes you with an attack beyond any power he could survive using, and throws himself in the path of the rock. A deep hole into the ocean floor forms as he fights it and is pushed deep under the water and land, never to return again. Small fragments impact the land, separating islands as well as souls from bodies. The destruction is horrific, but not complete.

Injured, heartbroken, and deserving nothing less, you take your limp, ragged body to the southern part of the land, where you shared so many memories. You crawl into the cave you were hatched in, and let your wounds overtake you. What have you done? The humans sometimes approach your cave, curious of the weeping, but none dare enter. You lamant for ages, before the mercy of death you don’t deserve, finally arrives.

You’re Herb again, and you’re in a cold, deep sweat.

“You killed him.” You say in revelation.

“He sacrificed himself for us.” Jane says. She saw it too.

“Yes.” The being confesses. “I did not know at the time, but he lived, trapped under the meteor, under the sea, weakened. It changed who he was. He has become bitter, angry.” There’s a deep, mournful tone. “And his love for those on the islands has turned sour as he was buried under their dead and their offerings. He’s mad now, and seeks only to destroy.”

Well, I wasn't quite expecting this plot twist.
The "helpful" one is the genocidal maniac, and the "evil" one was the Great Protector.

Ideally it would be best if we could help the Protector (since I don't particularly trust someone who thinks of humans as insects and only seems to be "helpful" now out of guilt), but if we can't find some way to help we have to make it so that he can't harm the people of the islands.

You aren’t sure what to say at first. You’re shocked, shaken, and hurt. “I’m sorry.” You sum up, feeling everything expressed through your voice.

It gives an acknowledging look, but says nothing.

“How you tried talking to him? Is there any way to soothe his rage?”

“For so long, I didn’t know his spirit still lingered here. I thought I remained as a punishment for my crimes. For many years, I infected the cave with sorrow and rage, and the Pokemon there became twisted. The people condemned their most heinous spirits as well. I believe your friend, who you call Polu, would know of this.”

Polu? You think for a moment. Spiritomb! That’s right! You remember Keira’s reaction to it, and something about the pokedex entry.

“But to answer your question, he evades me.I had too much shame to contact him at first. But when I began to suspect his...change, and intentions, he evaded me. He evades me now. I don’t know if he even remembers who I am. I don’t know if I wish him to. All I am certain of, is his ill-intent towards the islanders.”

“What can we do to stop him?”

“His plan eludes me, but he is acting towards something. As he began to search for champions to act on his behalf, so did I. The only action I can guess at, is an attempt to grow his influence over the world of the living again. And I fear...to return.”

“Return, how?” Jane asks.

“I do not know. I am only able to focus my spirit thanks to a select few devoted worshipers, who have given much energy and effort. I have deceived them into doing so.” The being assesses you and Jane. “Knowing all of the truth, what do you suggest as a course of action?”

“Well, I’d love to talk things out, if I can.” You say. “But I don’t know if I’m strong enough for that, yet. Maybe we could visit it when I am, and research it until then.” Your think some more. “But part of that could be talking to it’s champions. I'm sure that could help.” You beam with positivity and drive.

“I was merely asking for advice. But...you would aid me in this?” She asks. “Despite knowing the truth? If so, I could offer some aid and power to you to fulfill those duties.”

“Of course he would. When has he ever turned down a request for help?” You feel Jane lean back into you. Her aura freezes up. “I didn’t mean to volunteer you. It’s your choi-”

“I was asking both of you.” The being says. “You, Jane, possess all of the qualities I would like in a champion, in excess. And your...passion is a trait that reminds me of myself.”

Jane thinks, deeply. The being turns to you as she considers.

“And you, Herb. Would you trust me, and act as my champion? Do as I ask, even if I cannot or will not explain the reasoning?”

I’m really not sure how ok I am with helping out a mass-killer like this. I’m not sure how ok Herb should be about it. How much he should trust her.

I think that he should be asking himself whether a person can really change like that. Whether someone who has lived (or lingered as a spirit) so much longer than a human life can be considered the same person. He could ask Mace, but that might seem like poking at his feelings towards evolution and personality death.

I think now Herb needs to start wondering whether Gardevoir might accidentally learn these new secrets.

I think Herb needs to hear Keira tell the story of the great split.

I think Herb needs to get serious about his aura training. He hasn’t tried potential unlocking a human yet, nor vampirism, nor has he done too much self-healing outside of his coma after protecting Cubone.

I don’t think Herb really has the right to forgive her for any of this, since he wasn’t one of the ones affected. I don’t think anyone who experienced it first-hand is still alive even, except for the protector. Even Mace might be too young.

I think the best next steps have been chosen well though. Get spiritually stronger, and talk to the champions. Maybe the Rayquaza will be willing to talk to each other through the safety of human vessels.

It’s hard to say she should be punished more though. The worst we give people is the death penalty, and she’s already long dead. Though, our criminal justice system is framed within a non-ghost mindset. So, not sure how applicable it is.

My instinct is to accept/forgive and try to move forwards but I don’t know this time is a bridge too far.

I did sort of always picture Herb’s “defeating” of nega-fug as getting them to make up though.
>>
Between the two of them, Herb and Jane would have a good “trust, but verify” mentality.

It’s eyes take you in, trying to better understand you. “Without making a vow?”

“Well, I don’t like to overcommit.” You say, wondering if you phrased that right. “I mean, I just do what I think is right. I’ll help like a friend, or ally. But I’m not really anyone’s champion.”

“A friend or ally?” It really looks you over now. ”You would see us as equals.” That’s an interesting interpretation of what you said. The tone flat and hard to decipher. Is she impressed? Upset? Mocking? It gives you no more attention, and moves to Jane.

“I won’t settle for less than he does.” She says, almost defiantly. The answer surprises you. She’s always had so much to prove about this sort of thing.

It seems to have a lot to say, but instead, moves on. “I will not grant either of you any power. The ones who have pledged themselves to him will have a marker of some sort. A symbol, or item, or tattoo.” It seems to be looking to slither away.

“We’ll keep an eye out.” You say as it flies off. You can’t tell if it’s rude, has a lot of other important things to do, or just alien in the way it thinks. But one thing is certain; that aura’s power was intense. You’re much more aware as you feel the pressure fade.

Then, reality begins to set in, and you slowly blink until things are less surreal and just more normal.

You and Jane are left alone in the tent. The warmth from two bodies, the heavy scent of the candle, and the murmur of those still awake by the fire makes it seem like you’re still in another world together.

Jane takes off her shirt, revealing a practical tank top. “...It’s hot in here.” She explains.

She’s not wrong. You’re steaming. The pressure from that presence, and everything else, really upped the temperature. “Welp, I should get going-”

She grabs your wrist. “Hold on. I have something to ask.”

You turn to meet her eyes.

“I want to take Polu’s bandanna back to restore his honor. That means being Hal in a challenge. But...I don’t know him as well as you. Would he feel embarrassed? Is this...overstepping? Both as a friend in general, but also as a man. I know he’d say no if I offered, but I believe he’d be happy if I came to him afterwards.” She breaks eye contact. “Does that sound right? I don’t know these things as well as I wish.”

”How much would you value a badge that was given to you without being earned?” You ask.

She reflects on that. “But, what if he can’t earn it back by himself?”

“Polu’s a good trainer. He-”

“I know, but some styles are just mismatches. A good trainer with a particular line up of pokemon or just the wrong fighting style can lose to weaker one.” She says. “Although...a good enough trainer would learn to cover their weaknesses...”

“Well, what if you trained him up so he could do it himself?”

“I’ve thought of that, but...” She sighs. “I don’t believe I have the people skills needed. I’m not...like you. I wouldn’t know how to approach the subject, let alone be able to train him without him becoming fed up with me. It’s something I want to do alone for him. To become better friends. That’s selfish, I know.”

Wow. That’s big coming from Jane. She’s being very vulnerable right now. It might just be the after effects from the closeness of your meditation, though.

“Just be honest.”

She almost breaks a smile. Almost. “Why do you think everyone hates me? For holding back?”

“I... Everyone doesn’t hate you.” You try not to get sidetracked. “And Polu is patient. He’ll understand if things get a little rough. He’s one of the most relaxed people I know.”

“Exactly the attitude he needs to have tempered.” She says. “But...I see your point. Still, am I the best person for that?”

“You’re Jane.” You say, looking her in the eyes. “You can do anything if you put your mind to it.”

She returns the look, trying to assess your words. “Do you really mean that?”

“I said it, didn’t I?” You feel a bit bolder than usual.

She leans in close. Really close. Really really close.

She freezes for an hour-long second. “What...Oh!” She backs away. “I wasn’t- don’t misunderstand.” She turns a red that really makes the purple-blueish colour of her eyes stand out. “It’s not like that!”

“Okay.” You believe her.

“I- I was doing this.” She says, grabbing the back of your head and bumping your foreheads together with a slightly painful conk. She holds you forehead to forehead, showing the platonic display of affection. “It’s...what my mom and I used to do. I just...it’s stupid. Forget it.” She turns away. “Go see your girlfriends with your one-track mind.”

You go to leave, but you hear one last thing before you do.

“Friends. We’re good friends.” You tell her.

“I know that!” She huffs and blushes before taking a deep breath. After she collects herself just a little more, she gently starts nudging you to the zippered exit. “I’ll try to live up to the standard you’re setting.”

You exit the tent, feeling the cool night air wash over you. It’s a refreshing headrush. You know Jane took that the wrong way, but you’re also sure she’ll come to understand you didn’t to tease her or anything. She’s smart.

Oh, what’s this? You spot Cubone and Rotom playing around. Cubone, who is normally too reserved, and Rotom, who’s been curious but always out of everyone’s reach, just in case, are making a decent pair of pals. Well, might as well have a chat with the people that are still up.

You grab a cup and make some green tea. “Want some?” You ask the psychic girl.

She’s taken out of her thoughts. For a second, she doesn’t say anything, but then she remembers to speak. “Oh. Yes.” Her voice is awkward and strained.

You offer a cup. “I’m going to get see if Polu wants some too. I’ll be right back.” You tell her as she clasps the mug in both hands.

“Hey bro!” He greets you. You offer some tea as well, and he accepts, following you back to the psychic girl. He seems a bit distracted, though. He’s clearly been lost in though, too.

“So, things go well in there?” He asks, still out of earshot of the girl. “I guess so, if Jane let you leave alive.” He jokes. “So, bro, you’ve been doing pretty well for yourself, huh? Hana and Laki. And I hear a few more badges and other things, too.”
You have a quick moment before you get back to the girl.

>Ask how he’s going to get out of the gang

It’s been a fun holiday but it’s time to get to pressing matters. I don't expect Polu is too into the idea of committing to a journalism degree. That’s a lot of time and money.
>>

>Ask why he’s up so late. What’s on his mind?
>Ask how he’s going to get out of the gang

“Why are you up so late?” You ask. Then you look back to the psychic temple girl. “… Did you make a pass at the psychic girl? or think about it?”

“Huh? Oh no.” He almost laughs. “Didn’t even think about it. I like to stay out of trouble.” His self-aware smile mocks his words. “Like a lot of people, I’ve got a blinder on for the clergy for that sort of thing. Besides, after striking out with my crush before, I don’t have the confidence for another rejection.”

Oh. Jeez. He’s really been in the dumps, hasn’t he. You just give him a quick pat on the back. That seems to be everything he needs and wants at the moment. Then you move on to the next thing you wanted to ask. “How are you going to get out of the gang?”

He sighs. “Man. I wish I knew. I don’t want to be a journalist any more than I want to be a thug.” He sighs. “But...I was sort of giving up before. I’m feeling a lot more inspired now. But honestly, I don’t know if I can get my sister out. She wants to be there. Under his spell.”

“You can’t be too hard on yourself. You’ve been trying your best. You’ve done a lot to try to just be around her and change her mind. But she’s got to be the one to change it.”

His shoulders slump. “Yeah. I know.”

“Maybe she’ll come around one day.” You add in, hoping to take the sting out. He gives an appreciative look. “And, well, is it really so bad now that's he's not being a thug? now she's just dating a guy with a strongly worded editorial.”

He chuckles softly. “It’s better. But I still think he’s a bad influence. And I know what he’ll resort to to get his way. He’s not picking a new path because he’s had a change of heart, he just sees it as a better path to his goals. But thanks, that does make me feel a bit better.”

It must be rough knowing your sister is dating someone you don’t like. You feel a strong sense of sympathy towards him.

You both reach the campfire, where the psychic girl is blowing on her tea. Polu is still pretty down and drained, and the girl seems pretty shy.

Oh no! You’re the most social person in the group right now!

“Thank you for the tea.” She says, breaking the silence. That’s nice of her. But...is she just saying thank you, or is that intentional? Did she read your thoughts? Are they upset they were asked out here to find Polu but he was already found before they got here?

You don’t know much about their temple, except that they don’t interact with men a lot, and they’re fairly secluded. It sounds a bit like what Keira had growing up,.

“So, you’re up late.” You comment to her. “Why aren’t you sleeping with the others?”

She gets up. “I...could leave you two. I’m sorry for not getting the hint earlier.”

“What? No.” Polu says. “We’re just curious. Nobody is asking you to leave. Sit. It’s alright.”

She hesitates, embarrassed, then fixes her dress and sits down. “I guess I just want to see more, even if it’s the dark forest. It’s different to see the outside world with your own eyes.”

“Hey, so, mind if I ask you something?”

She looks up, confused and a little suspicious. “Mind?”

Polu stops his sip and lowers his mug. “It’s a mainlander expression.”

She looks apologetic and flustered. “Oh! Of course. I didn’t mean to imply you were implying anything.” Oh jeez. She seems more concerned about offending you than anything else. That puts you at ease, a bit. It also informs you that she doesn’t seem to be using or powers. She doesn’t want to be seen as using them, too. “Please, go ahead.”

“Well, I was wonder what your th...oughts were on Gardevoir.” You paused for half a second to double check your sentence as it was leaving your mouth. It doesn’t look like she caught that. “Besides helping us look for Polu, we were hoping the temple would be able to help her.”

She looks a little flustered, then finds something in her tea bag to stare at. “The temple wouldn’t appreciate me speaking on it’s behalf.”

“But what do you think?” You specify. “Polu and I are really curious, right, Polu?”

He gives you a questioning look. Not an upset one, but he’s trying to make sure he understands what you’re doing. He seems to approve of whatever conclusion he came to about it, though. “Yeah, I am.”

She fidgets. “I think she’s been greatly disturbed. She’s picked up so many stray thoughts that she’s jumbled her own. It can happen sometimes, to us, but it only lasts for a few minutes, and only for those that are unpracticed. It can also...” she looks away again. “Well, this is difficult to explain. Do you know how your eyes or ears can become extra sensitive if things are very quiet or dark? Well, if she wasn’t listening to thoughts for a long time, then suddenly had a lot coming in at once, that might have done this to her. Perhaps she took a blow to her head and lost her ability to read thoughts for a long time. Or perhaps she still has an injury.”

“Could I use my power to heal?” You ask.

“I’ve heard of it. I don’t know anything about that.” She says. “I think whatever damage is likely healed over, physically. But her thought patterns are still uncertain. She can’t seem to hold memory too well. We might be able to help a bit in teaching her exercises, since this can happen to us as well, but I’ve never seen anything of this scale. My sisters likely haven’t either.”

“Is it irresponsible to her have come along with us? We're going to be around a lot of people in the near future, and more than a few of them would probably have... Loud thoughts.”

“That answer depends on the thoughts of your group.” She seems to get really quiet. She’s really forcing herself to say this next part. “If you and your friends all of relatively sane thoughts and healthy thought patterns, I think that would be a good foundation for most of her stray readings. My understanding is that she used to be more confused than she is.”

That’s a relief. The last thing you want to do is harm her by accident.

“But what do you mean by loud thoughts? Emotional outbursts?”

You think back to Hana and wonder how you can phrase this. “Well, umm.-”

“Just teenager stuff.” Polu says. “You know how it is.”

“Uh, right.” You say. “So what’s it like at the psychic temple?”

She thinks. “You would probably see it as a boring and oppressive atmosphere. And quiet. We’re encouraged to use our gift when we can. Solitude and lack of distraction allows us to focus. It’s very enjoyable and a unique experience, but...”

“But it gets boring.” Polu says.

“I didn’t say that.” She responds, kicking her feet playfully and keeping her voice down.

“But you thought it.” He winks.

“I...oh.” She laughs a little. “Doesn’t my ability to read thoughts disturb you?”

He leans back. “It’s sort of refreshing. I mean, you usually have to put up a front with people, at least to some degree. There’s something liberating about it. But it sounds like you’re not using it right now.”

She shakes her head. “People think we can use it all the time, or without limit. Only famously powerful psychics can do that. Myself and my sisters must work together for anything impressive. And I also want to...try being normal. For awhile.”

“And how do you expect to be normal when you’re so pretty?”

She hides her face, but the smile was clearly visible for a second. How does Polu do that?

“I’m just teasing.” He says. “I’m sorry. Come on, we’ll change the subject.” He looks to you.

“Oh, umm, would you like to know anything about the mainland?’

She reveals her face again. There’s a big smile, but this one is different. You’re about to drown in questions.

>>
F Jane :'(
>>
>>3075383
I feel bad for her.
>>
>>3075672
How come?
>>
>>3075679
Herb's pretty much the one person who's been willing to endure her abrasiveness, look past her aggressive exterior and try to get to know the person underneath. Based on what was said in this thread about Jane's idea of family, even her own parents may have been quite distant from her. So now, either she genuinely was just doing something her mother used to do with her (I doubt it), or one of two things happened. She may have actually developed romantic feelings for Herb, or she just doesn't know how to react to someone being this close to her because she has so little experience with it. So either she just got shot down by her crush, or she's probably driving herself crazy wondering if she screwed up the one meaningful friendship she seems to have (aside from maybe Keira). Either way, the girl has not had an easy time of it.
>>
>>3075685
Maybe, I think that Jane benefits a lot from knowing Herb, so we've been seeing her grow a lot. I feel like Jane should be honest about her feelings if that's the case. Also there is a reason they call them crushes, cause you get crushed. Haha
>>
>>3075690
Herb's probably shown her that there are genuinely good people out there that aren't nice to people because they have some ulterior motive. That was clearly a bitter pill for her to swallow, considering how distrustful she was of him for so long. And we all know Jane's not the best at putting herself out there with emotions other than anger (she's been improving, but as far as we know that's only been with Herb). And yeah, crushes don't always work out, but that doesn't mean you can't feel sympathy for someone whose feelings were rejected.
>>
>>3075699
I see what you are saying, but I don't really feel bad for Jane. She had plenty of chances to say how she felt about Herb if she really wanted to be romantic. Sure, it sucks to get rejected, but it's normal and not something I really feel any sadness over personally.
>>
>>3075707
Before we confessed to Hana, she didn't explicitly say it, but she implied that she may have had some.
>>
>>3075714
Got to be bold in matters of love. Implications won't get you anywhere.
>>
>>3075718
True, almost bit Laki in the ass.
>>
>>3075718
Its easy to type that anonymous on a message board but with the amount of blocks Jane has. She was still misinterpreting every positive emotion she had about herb as Herb being a master manipulator trying to harm her.

Because of that I've never seen Jane as an option since any romantic involvment we had with her even one starting right now would be tainted. She was in a downward spiral when we first met until the blow out that we had at the plant temple, shes just starting her climb out now dropping her false bravado and filling those gaps with... well actual earned bravado but in its early stages.
>>
>>3076445
I never said it was easy, but you'll never get what you want in matters of love if you don't put yourself out there. Doesn't matter what your issues are if you can't convey to another person that you care about them then they won't return that affection. There has to be a clear understanding that both people want to be with each other.

I've never really disliked Jane, when I was her age I was a lot like her. Lots of anger, always trying to prove yourself, but you have to move past that kind of thinking because it's all inward facing. You'll never be able to understand other people that way. Jane has always been more bellicose than caring about bravado in my eyes. She always said shit just to start shit cause she's always trying to test herself against others.

I'm glad that herb has been a good influence on her because honestly Jane needed a friend. We are probably Jane's best friend too. I could see her feeling that kind of strong feelings for someone being confused for romantic feelings. Cause whether it's romantic or not friendship is all about love.
