You awake to the sound of treads at… You check the time on your phone. 3AM? Who’s driving tanks at 3 in the morning!?

Winona groans, shoving her pillow over her face. “Someone tell those damn doorknockers to knock it off! I need my beauty sleep!”

Stack stares up at the tent ceiling. “Winona, you and I both know that beauty sleep for you is pointless.”

“Because I’m pretty?” asks Winona.

“No, because you’re ugly and you’re a slut.” Winona responds by throwing a pillow at Stack. “Ow.”

“Enough,” you say. You sigh, standing up and pulling your jacket on. It’s going to be a little chilly out there so may as well as get that on top of your pajamas. “I’ll go see what the ruckus is. Go back to sleep, you two.” Ingrid and Josephina sleep quietly, somehow. You tiptoe over them and get to your tentflaps. You pull them open then turn on a flashlight. Ever since yesterday, people have been going nuts. Serafina got the bright idea to –actually- attach a bayonet to her tank cannon. You thought you suppressed that ages ago. Then Regina wanted wings to make her IS-2 fly. Then Serina wanted to carry bikes on the back of the King Tiger for recon (actually, not a bad idea, but the bikes have to be WW2-era vintage unfortunately and there’s not a lot of those just lying around and you do not want to deal with the judges). And then Elyse wanted to paint your image on the side of her tank. And –then- Duchess got the bright idea to plant IEDs on the battlefield site. That last one wasn’t just against the rules, it was an act of terrorism so you had to politely yet firmly tell them no.

You wonder what –this- is all about.

You walk out to the tank hangars and see what it is. It’s… a Tetrarch tank? It spins around on the driving grounds, almost uselessly. “Get it under control, Hilda!” yells someone from inside.

“I’m trying! I can’t see shit!” Hilda yells back. Wait. Is that Denise? “Fina! Where am I going!?”

“How should I know!?” screams Fina. “Fecking thing is in the Queen’s English!”

“That’s –still- English! You’re not even Irish you fucking mink!” screams Hilda.

“Hey!” you shout. Denise pokes her head out of the hatch then looks at you as the tank continues to swirl in place. “Denise!?” you shout.

Denise waves at you, her face covered in grime and soot. “Hello!”

“Where did you get this tank!?”

“Hold on, Hilda, kill the engine, please!” The Tetrarch stops moving, going quiet. Denise almost falls out of it before gaining control once more. She address you from the hatch. “We found it in town on sale. We wanted to help too.”

Hilda says something from inside, “Actually it was mostly Denise and Fina. I got dragged into it.” Lovely to hear Hilda is so loyal. “I’d rather be sitting at home, counting my money, and not acting like a putz.”

“Oh shut up, Hilda. This was your idea to buy the tank.”

“Buy it, not crew it!” Hilda yells back in response. Denise smirks, folding her arms.

“What do you think?” asks Denise. “I know it’s not much. And we’re not exactly experienced, but we’re willing to help too. We’ll throw in just like the rest of you guys.”

> “Okay. First off, how much did that tank actually cost?”

“I appreciate the help, Denise,” you say. “I gotta ask though. Do you have any experience driving tanks?”

“Not really,” says Denise. “Neither does Hilda or Fina. But regardless of our experience, we want to help in anyway way that we can. It’s the least we can do given that we’re your team of assistants anyway. If anything, we were far too slow to realize that.” You’ll be honest, you’re staggered by their eagerness to get right into it. You do have to wonder how they got the money to buy this Tetrarch though. Then you remember Hilda is part of the team. Money is probably no object for her. “We’re trying to train now so we can at least keep up and serve as a meatshield.”

“Yeah, no, we’re not in the business of using less experienced crews for meatshields,” you say. “That’s dirty talk. Everyone has their place on the field.” You fold your arms, look at the Tetrarch. It’s in surprisingly good condition for a recently bought tank too. Though, you’re missing out on a Littlejohn adaptor. Oh well.

Denise asks you, “Could you show us some tips and tricks? We’d really appreciate it.”

Could you?

“Denise, it’s like, 3 in the morning,” you say. “Let’s get some rest first. Then I can show you guys around.”

Denise salutes. “Roger that! Alright, Hilda. Let’s park up!”

“… how?” asks Hilda.

“Uh. You know,” says Denise. “Just like um… can we just leave it here?” You nod. “Okay, belay that. Just dismount.” The hatches pop open, letting Hilda and Fina climb out with Denise. The three of them look ragged and tired. “We wanted to surprise you,” says Denise. “But, I guess practicing at 3 in the morning isn’t exactly subtle.”

“Not really,” you say. “But really. Thank you for your support. It means a lot.” She grins happily at the praise.

With that done though. You decide to go back to your tent. Denise and company go back to their own.

“Hey, Ellie!” Oh come on. You only get a couple of hours after that fiasco? Winona shakes you awake. “There’s someone here to see you.” You yawn, sitting up again. You didn’t even take off your jacket. You look over and see Jeep Jockey standing at the tent flaps, dressed rather casually. Oh. Oh! Jock! You quickly stand up, dusting yourself off and quickly putting your hair in order.

“Hey, Ellie,” says Jock. He smiles, standing outside the tent. Stack holds the flap open, giving you a sidelong smirk. Ingrid and Josephina also look to you as well. He steps inside, careful not to tread on anything unmentionable. “Uh. Listen, I heard around the camp what was going on, and the announcement too. That’s some really scummy stuff. I hope I didn’t catch you unawares or at a bad time or anything.”

> “Girls, leave. Now.”

“I mean, unless aircraft is somehow Tankery legal, I don’t see how you can make things –worse-.” You sigh, smiling at him. “But really, it’s great to see you, Jock. I hope you aren’t going too far out of your way.”

“Nah, nah, it’s nothing,” he says. “I even brought Jack and some of the other guys with me too. We’re all coming out to support LGA. After they allowed us to practice on their ship, it’s only natural we make sure they know we’re always going to be grateful. Plus, Jack wanted to see if Griselda was available.” You roll your eyes. “Can’t hurt to try.”

“I suppose not,” you say. You take his arms then gently kiss his cheek. He leans back, rubbing his neck nervously. Then you realize there are four other girls in the tent with you. “Uh. We doing anything?”

“Uh, that’s if you’re not too busy,” he says. “I understand you’re working under the gun here so. If you want me to wait up for you, I can.”

“I got some time,” you say. “We can have lunch real quick. How about that?”

“Sure!” Jock smiles. “I’ll drive you to the festival grounds.”

You quickly say, “But I also have to help Denise, Hilda, and Fina.” Jock tilts his head, quirking his brow. “See, they bought a tank and I need give them a crash course on how to operate a tank.” He nods, understanding. “Think we could eat on the go?”

“Sure,” he says. “Come on.” He leads you out of the tent and into the bright sun. Waiting outside happens to be his jeep.

“Bye now!” Winona waves goodbye at you two. “Try not to be too frisky!” You give Winona the finger in response. Ugh. Jock settles into his seat then drives you out.

You bite into a piece of chicken on a skewer. On your lap was a plastic plate of fried noodles, some curry, and chicken. It was a bit of a buffet back at the festival. But you couldn’t stay because you had to give some lessons to Denise and company. “So let me get this straight,” says Jock. “Mei bought out NATO to change the rules, purely so she could show up the Shimadas for them having expelled her from their school like when she was a kid or something?”

“Basically,” you say. You chew on some chicken. It really is a little convoluted now that you think about it.

“I see.” Jock rubs his chin. “Yeah, I hope I don’t run into that kind of drama in Skycraft. Worse people do up there is ram your plane and put you in the hospital for like a week.”

“Whoever does that to you is going in there for a month,” you say. “Guaranteed.”

“Aw, thanks, babe,” Jock mutters. You blush a little. He called you ‘babe’. Almost offhandedly too. “I mean, I’ll be honest. Are you really sure you got it all under control? I mean, it looks like Mei is going to put up some serious competition. I don’t want to like… make you seem like you’re hopeless. But I don’t want to see you crying either. When people cry, I cry. That’s just a thing I do. Please don’t judge me.”

“We’ll do the best we can, Jock. Given what we have, it’s not great unless someone decides to offload a bunch of surplus Cold War gear on us. But it’s something. We’ll make due regardless.” Jock nods, solemn in manner. “Besides, if we’re both crying, it’s not as awkward in my opinion. Not that I am going to cry.”

“Hey, it’s alright to cry every now and again,” says Jock.

“I’m not going to cry because I lost a match,” you say. “I’ll cry because we lost, basically Tankery is going to be thrown on its head, NATO will disintegrate, our team will have made it out to this match for nothing, and Mei will have made her point and won. I don’t want her to win.” You sigh. The idea that you don’t want someone to win is very… hostile to you. In a good sport, you’d desire they win as much as you do, but accept that you have to do your best to win.

Here, Mei winning would be horrific. She’s done nothing to assure you that she deserves the victory and everything to convince you that she’s purely out for herself and her own personal pride.

So you’ll do everything to win. Not everything like she is, but enough.

Jock nods. “That’s heavy.”

“It is,” you say.

You arrive at the tank driving grounds. There you see Denise, Hilda, and Fina looking over their Tetrarch tank. Denise waves at you. “Hey, Ellie! You come to help us?” You nod, dismounting. Jock stays in his seat, smiling as he watches you leave. Typical boys. Hate to see you go but love to watch you leave.

You smack your fist against your palm. “Alright. Let’s get started on your crash course on Tankery. Hopefully there won’t be actual crashing involved. Let’s do this.”

“Alright, take it slow this time, Denise!” You hang onto the back of the turret, holding on fore dear life as the Tetrarch takes its lap around the grounds. Jock watches nearby on his jeep, eating his lunch. You can see Serafina and Regina watching too next to him, curious. “Try not to overpower the engine! You gotta treat it with some love and care!”

Hilda says, “I’ll love it when it works!”

“It’ll work when you love it, Hilda!” you say.

The Tetrarch goes over a bump, almost sending you off. But you manage to hang on. Oh dearie you. This is a little dangerous, riding a tank crewed by rookies. But you’re not going to just back down. You said you’d show them around. And so far, they’ve gotten the hang of turning and driving in a straight line. It’s actually quite impressive.

Denise pops out of the turret, grinning happily. “Oh man, I think we’ve got it now!”

“Think you’re ready to fire a shell?” you ask.

She gasps. “Can we?”

You point to the sky. “Just aim out into the sky. We’ll see if you get on. Fire when ready.”

“Alright, loading!” says Denise. She pops back down.

“Denise, are you okay in there?” you ask.

“J- Just hold on!” she says. “It’s a little cramped in here-“

“Ow! Denise, you just stepped on my fecking tit!” yells Fina.

“Sorry! Okay, loaded!”

The Tetrarch fires its anemic little two pounder. The shot bursts harmlessly in the sky. A little slow on the loading but you can work that out later. Denise pops out again, panting heavily. She looks at you. “So? Think we got it?”

“There’s some work to do, but it’s a start at least,” you say. You sigh, smiling at her. Denise grins happily, patting the top of the tank in anticipation. “Listen. I know you guys might be excited to do some work in the match. But I want you girls to know that it’s not just about kills out there. I need scouts, I need quick tanks out there that can move. Stuff like that.”

“We’ll do our best,” says Denise. “And don’t worry, I’ll try not to get in your way.”

“It’s not about getting in anyone’s way or stealing kills.” You drop off of her tank. “It’s all about teamwork. Coordinate. Ask questions. And never hesitate to lend a helping hand.” She salutes. “Now take a couple of laps, get used to the ride, okay?”

“Alright, Hilda, let’s go!” Denise takes the Tetrarch tank forward. You walk on over to the jeep.

Serafina says, “I was hoping for more from Denise. But I guess a Tetrarch isn’t so bad.”

“Probably the only thing they could get on short notice,” says Jock. You nod. You wouldn’t be surprised really. You turn to Serafina.

“Serafina.” She blinks, smiling at you. “Have you seen Griselda?”

“Not since she and the Captain went to talk in the hangar. They’re discussing the parts they need,” says Serafina. “Been in there for hours now. I’m actually kind of concerned because we don’t have a game plan yet. We don’t even know the map. I figured Griselda would let us know these things.” She should. “I’ll go find her.” You nod to Jock. “Take care, Jock. I’ll be back.”

Jock gives you a two-finger salute. “Holding position, boss.” You roll your eyes, then turn around to walk to the tank hangars. You sigh. You really should be enjoying this day more but instead it’s work, work, work.

“So we’ll be using these parts here…” Griselda and Captain Spruance and a few Naval Studies Officers stand around her Easy Eight. “Now. How soon will they arrive?” she asks.

Captain Spruance says, “I’m having courier flights bring them in. They should be here within an hour or so. Order them yesterday.”

“Lovely.” Griselda turns and sees you coming. “Elodie. Good to see you. If you’re wondering, yes I know Denise brought her Tetrarch in. Personally it’s a weird decision in my book but I’ll take anything I can get at this point.”

“Of course,” you say. “Do we have a crew for the SU-100?”

Captain Spruance says, “I’m rounding up volunteers.”

“Good, good.” You look to Griselda. “I was just talking to Serafina earlier. She was concerned that we don’t seem to have a game plan for the match yet.” Griselda looks at you, quietly, as if not knowing what to say that. “I just wanted to know if we even know where we’re going to be fighting at.”

Griselda wags her finger, pursing her lips. “Mm. Yeah. I forgot. Shit. Um. Ellie, listen. Can you have the crews assemble tonight? We’ll discuss everything and have everything squared away. I just gotta-…” She sighs, rubbing her forehead. “First off, Captain Spruance is happily bringing in some new parts for us. I just got the word though that no actual Cold War tanks as standard are not available. Or are way too expensive for us to purchase.”

“Shit. Really?” you ask. Griselda nods, glum. “Well, what can we do?”

“Well. I’m studying on the T-54. Now, new steel is no match for a piece of metal traveling at sufficient velocities in the right place. I still believe that our more advanced tanks can go toe-to-toe with them. It’ll be difficult. But it’s possible.” You nod, listening. “But… I’m going to be honest, it’s really wearing me down thinking about it, Ellie.”

Griselda nods, frowning a little. “Well, okay, Elodie. The Captain here will take care of you then. Contact me when you want to make a purchase. I’ll handle the money details with our buyers and sellers.” She holds out her hand. You offer it and she quickly takes it. “Thank you for your help. Really.”

You nod. Griselda steps past and hurries out to get things planned. You walk up to Captain Spruance, who was listening to the whole conversation. “So, you’re handling things now?”

“Yep.” You fold your arms, smiling. “Griselda needs a little break I think from work. So I gave her different work to do.”

“Ha!” Captain Spruance slaps your arm, grinning. “Love that attitude! Though, I’ll admit. We’re cutting it close here. I can have the parts here. And I’m already wiring that the mechanics be sent here double quick too so we can get converting. But Griselda’s yet to tell me what conversions she wants.”

“Yeah. I’ll take care of that for her, she trusts me on that,” you say.

“If you think this is exciting, just wait until you get into a tank,” you say.

Captain Spruance grins, snickering at that. “Heh. That’s cute. Still. Terrible business we’re in but I suppose we have to make do with what we get and what we can do for you and the team. Rmember, Elodie, we’re all in this together. This isn’t just about your team’s pride.” Captain Spruance places her hand on the Sherman’s side. “This is about LGA’s pride as well as a school.”

“Well, I don’t imagine the school matters so much as the students who drive them,” you say. “An ace can come from the poorest of schools. What matters is the tools given to them.”

Captain Spruance nods, understanding that a little. “I suppose so.” She checks her watch. “Listen, we got some time before the parts arrive and the mechanics show up. How about we have a quick meal before we get settling on what we want to do?”

Eh? “But, lunch was just half an hour ago.”

She pats her belly, pouting. “Elodie, I’m a growing girl.” With her size? She’ll need at least a foot to catch up to everyone else. “I gotta have my extra lunches!”

“Captain, you’re liable to grow horizontally than vertically.”

“Ha!” Captain Spruance slaps her knee, laughing a little. “I like you, Elodie. I hate that you said that, but I like that you did say that to my face.” You roll your eyes. “Come on. A quick second lunch won’t hurt.”

You sigh. You suppose it won’t.

“Elodie Zumwalt!”

You and Captain Spruance finish a quick meal of hamburgers and fries, just as an M4A3E8 Sherman comes rolling up onto the lot. What the heck? Standing atop it was Captain Dix Hauser, of Robert A. Heinlein Military Academy. "Elodie Zumwalt!” she screams. She does not look very happy. Her tank stops in front of the hangar where you two have been eating, and she quickly dismounts. “That bitch! The nerve! The absolute nerve of those slopes and their goddamn money tossing activities, I oughta-“

“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on, that’s racist,” says Captain Spruance. “You can’t just call Chinese people slopes.”

“I don’t care! They’re fixing this match worse than the Black Sox did!” says Dix. “I was here to watch the match in person but now that I’m here I want to throw a punch at Mei and Freya and all those other mercenary fucks that let this happen!”

“Dix, calm down,” you say. “It’s alright.”

“It’s not alright! I’ll protest the fuck out of this match, I’ll- I’ll-“ She looks past you and sees the table which still has a few hamburgers. “You gonna eat those?” You shrug. She steps past and quickly starts stuffing her face. You and Captain Spruance stand there, awkwardly. “Mmff! Mfff! Mfff! MFFFA!” What?

Captain Spruance says, “I think she said that she’s going to go up to Mei personally and show her what for.”

Dix swallows her meal, then glares at the two of you. “If I were you two, I’d be fuming! Why are you just standing around?”

“We’re fixing our tanks,” you say. “We’re trying to squeeze every little bit of cash and parts we have left to get this thing going.”

“Huh. Well.” Dix folds her arms. “Good luck with that. But you’re still going to be outclassed. Won’t be nothing except a Fort Pillow out there.”

“Maybe you can help us then,” you say.

“How so?” asks Dix.

“Parts, tanks, crews. Maybe even you joining us,” you explain. “We need everyone we can get. It’s all hands on deck for this situation we’re in.” Hell, part of you was kind of hoping that everyone would show up in one big cavalry moment to assist the team. But you won’t be surprised either if nobody shows up. Cynicism at it’s finest you suppose. “Can you?”

Dix folds her arms, rubbing her chin. “Mmm. Lemme think on it. I’d love to help but I’d need to know how I can help first,” she says.

“Fair enough,” you say. “Like I said, tanks, parts, crews. And if not then, then money. Money’s a big issue.”

“Considering the state of your team before this match, clearly,” Dix says. Gee, thanks. “Tell you what though, I got an idea. I’m going to go consult with the judges and see if I can’t pull any loophole shit of my own.”

“Nothing against the spirit of the rules,” you beg. Please don’t stoop to their level. Please!

“Relax!” Dix thumps her chest. “I’ll be right back.” She snaps her fingers. “Hey, give Meryl and Carolina a call too. They’re in town.” She hurries back to her tank. “Trust me, Elodie! Fortune favors the fair!” She climbs back up. “Let’s go, girls!” Her tank starts backing up.

Captain Spruance says, “Well, what now then?”

> Give Meryl and Carolina a call. If they’re in town, they likely can help too.

> “Let’s go see what we can do with the tanks.”

“Let’s go see what we can do with the tanks,” you say. Captain Spruance nods and starts leading you to the hangars. You take out your phone and dial up Meryl first.

The next half hour is spent on conversing with them. You have to explain the situation to both Meryl and Carolina separately. Then you explain that you need help from them. Anything they can bring, tanks, crews, parts, money, anything. You admit, you can sort of see where Griselda is coming from when it comes to asking for help. The more you’ve done this lately, the more sick to your stomach you feel. It’s as if you’re resigning yourself. You understand that this is the right thing to do but it doesn’t make you feel any better.

You suppose pride has something to do with it.

Still. Their responses are interesting.

Meryl told you: “If you needed help, you should’ve let me know earlier. I’m on my way now.”

Carolina said: “I’m coming! I’m coming! Don’t start without me!”

Seems you’ve got them firmly on your side. You walk with Captain Spruance through the hangars, where the tanks are already opened up and getting tuned up by dozens of mechanics. Captain Spruance looks back at you as you walk. “The first thing we gotta do is tune ups. I’m going to squeeze every last bit of horsepower out of these engines as I can. We’re going to give these engines a ferocious cleaning. Then we gotta discuss conversions. Unfortunately, that’s the bigger issue.”

“What do you mean?” you ask.

“Simply put, you and I do not have the money to convert more than one tank,” says Captain Spruance. “At least not right now. We have parts and tools coming but we don’t know if that’ll help any. But if we start now, we’ll have the tank you want converted ready tomorrow morning sharp. We’ll work double time if we have to.”

“Right.” You feel a little bad. “Captain, I-“

“No thanks is necessary, Elodie. I’m doing the school a service,” she says. “Noblesse oblige or whatever.” You’re pretty sure that only applies nobility, not command, but you won’t correct her. “All I ask is that once we’re done, you whip Mei’s tiny Chinese butt all the way back home for us.”

“We won’t let you down, Captain. If they beat us, it’ll be because they had to fix the match, not because they’re superior to us.”

“Right, right,” says Captain Spruance. She walks up to one of the mechanics overseeing the tuneup on the Churchill IV, Iris’ tank. “Dilly. What’s the word on the Churchill?” she asks.

“We’re tuning up her engine as we speak,” she says. “As per Iris’ request, she wants us to leave the IV on its own. She doesn’t want it converted to VII or to IX standard.” Oh? That’s interesting. But you suppose maybe Iris just wants to keep the classics intact you suppose. “Uh, Bernhardt’s working on bringing our heavy lift stuff in so we can get to pulling these armor plates off.”

“Anything we can work on for bringing our tanks to Cold War standard?” she asks.

Dilly taps her clipboard with her pen, thinking. “We sent squads of girls into town for discounts and sales on tanks. Only thing found was Denise and her Tetrarch.” Of course. “But we’re still looking. But it seems like all the shops are closing up unfortunately because it seems that they’re shutting down nearly all the cities and towns nearby to make way for the match.” That figures. Damn it.

“Great, great.” Captain Spruance sighs. “Alright. Elodie. What do you think we should focus on for now? With the money that we have before we talk conversions?”

“I want the gunsights fixed and ready for us to use. Every inch of accuracy. Barrel rifling polished too and cleaned. I want these guns on target,” you say.

Captain Spruance salutes. “Got it. You get that Dilly?”

“Accuracy, got it,” says Dilly. “We’ll work your guns and get them going.” Nice. “We’ll need to do some test firing tonight to make sure they actually work obviously but trust us, they’ll be pinpoint on target. Dead center.” Excellent! You smile, rubbing your hands. “Now as for conversion-“

“Elodie!” You look back to see Denise coming in on her Kettenkrad. She comes rolling up to you. “Elodie, great news! I got some word from Perrine Hobart! She’s coming to help out!”

“Really?”

Denise nods. “Yeah, isn’t that exciting!?”

“It is actually! Really means something when the person who hates playing by the rules comes to help because of the rules being broken.” This is great. J. Walter Christie’s technical prowess will surely help as well. Not to mention Perrine has that streak of mad genius to her. If she can make something work, it will.

Denise salutes. “I’ll relay the news to the other girls! Then we’ll go back to training in the Tetrach!” She drives off in her Kettenkrad, leaving you with Captain Spruance. Hell, if you’re lucky you might get the entire Western League down here to help you with this. First Dix, then Meryl and Carolina, now Perrine. Who else will come?

Captain Spruance says, “We’ll be glad to have her. Much as I don’t really like Unlimited, seems a little wacky for me, any help is good help.”

“Captain, Captain!” A Naval Studies student runs up to you two. “The parts just arrived. We’re waiting to see what you want.”

“I have arrived!” For those about to rock, Perrine apparently salutes them. Her Churchill AVRE comes thundering into the hangar, backed up by several trucks full of mechanics. Perrine stands atop her AVRE, patting the turret as she comes storming in. “Heard you needed some help!”

“I did,” you say. She hops on down, smiling at Captain Spruance. “Perrine, this is Captain Spruance of the Lafayette Girls Academy. She’s my direct superior.”

“Aww!” Perrine lowers herself down to Captain Spruance’s level, smiling at her. “I didn’t know they let kids be Captains!”

Captain Spruance pouts. “I’m not a kid.” She is certainly a kid. She’s somewhere in the range of fifteen. “It just so happens that almost every time there’s a Captain for LGA, they turn out to be small. In fact, I would say my height and my biological disposition makes me fated to be the Captain! So have some respect-“ Perrine presents a chocolate bar for her. Captain Spruance swipes it then starts munching down. “Hmph, you’re lucky I like chocolate.”

Perrine stands up straight to look at you. “Normally I’d be a little hesitant to do vanilla work these tanks, but given the circumstances, I’m glad to throw in.”

“And we’re glad you are. I can’t thank you enough for doing this for us, Perrine.”

“No worries!” Perrine slaps your arm, grinning happily. “Though, I’ll admit, you all are braver than I thought running into battle with these tanks. I would’ve made a uniform roster myself.”

“Well, we take what we can get,” you say. “We still have an SU-100 that’s still uncrewed. Not to mention I just told Dilly that we need to fix our gunsights and get every inch of accuracy possible seeing as how we’re going to be facing T-54s in battle. You know, those ones with the rounded turrets?” you say.

“I know the ones,” says Perrine. She starts walking the line, looking at the tanks. “Tell you what I’d do. Any electronics you have, we’re going to pump them up. Everything.”

“Aren’t electronics covered by the rules?” you ask.

“Ha. Electronics in tanks these days are modern for safety reasons, therefore there’s nothing saying you can’t use your own electronics,” she says. “I know a girl in Ooarai who pushed the limits of her Tiger P to epic proporations, cheri. That’s the potential. Not to mention your suspension as well, we’ll work on those. And then-“ She snaps her fingers, thinking on it. “We gotta talk rockets.”

“I considered those rockets you gave us, but I figured they’d be an easy target,” you say.

“Ah, shame,” she says. “Oh well.”

“Please nothing too far out of the rules, Perrine,” you say. “I want to win but I want to win in a way that preserves the spirit of the sport.” You feel you have to explain yourself. If there’s anyone else in the tournament who can bend rules in their favor besides Mei, it’s Perrine. “Plus, I-“ She stuffs a chocolate bar in your mouth, silencing you. Hey!

Perrine shushes you. “Let me work, cheri. I know what you want.” With that, Perrine hurries off to get some work done.

Captain Spruance steps up next to you, still munching on her chocolate bar. “She seems nice.”

“Yeah.” You sigh. You’ll have to find her later. Now what though?

“So what do we have?” Dilly hands you a clipboard. You look over it and see all your possible options. Limited unfortunately, but it seems you have quite a few options to look forward to here.

> M26 Pershing “Sokol” - > M47 Patton (90mm M36)
> A30 Challenger (Early) “Eliot” - > FV4101 Charioteer (Ordnance QF 20 Pounder)
> Comet I “Carl” - > FV4101 Charioteer (Ordnance QF 20 Pounder)
> Comet I “Oliver” -> FV4101 Charioteer (Ordnance QF 20 Pounder)
> M4A3E8 Sherman “Janus” -> Super Sherman M-50 (75mm SA 50 Tank gun)

You groan a little, thinking on it. You don’t have much knowledge on cold war tanks. “Perrine, you got a minute?” Perrine comes over from what she was doing. “I might need your personal opinion on something. I can only make one conversion here and I’m not sure which to take.”

Perrine says, “It’s up to you. We’ll do our best to accommodate you. And besides, even the worst options here like the Charioteer are workable with the right crew. Though I believe the Charioteer means removing some of the crew.” Agh. True. Maybe those aren’t viable. “The Super Sherman I hear some good things about. But I’d consult with Griselda about that.”

Wow. Your options really are pretty limited.

> So which one do you choose?
> Or do you not want to use one at all and save the money for converting other tanks in the line?
>>
I should also add, if you have another option that's somewhere before 1959, it's up for grabs with what tanks we have.
>>
>>3084801
> M26 Pershing “Sokol” - > M47 Patton (90mm M36)
The Charioteers are a total mess, not at all worth it, and the super Sherman's not that much of an upgrade. The Patton might be the worst of the first gen MBTs, but it's the best of our options.
>>
>>3084801

Since NATO allows reasonable improv, would Cold War improv be allowed as well now? And could it be applied to WW2 vehicles as well? > 3. Ahistorical modifications are allowed within reason. Common modifications allowed are:
a. Armored skirts no greater than 10 millimeters in thickness.
b. Applique weld-on or riveted armor no greater than 20 millimeters in thickness.
c. Modified gunsights and addition of historical infrared spotlamps and sights.
d. Floodlights and searchlights. Must be historical models.
e. Bulldozers and hedgerow cutters.
f. Pintle-mounted machine guns.
g. Camouflage netting.
h. Decoys such as inflatable tanks, cardboard cutouts, and stereo sets for audio decoys.

j. Smoke and flare launchers.

“Alright,” says Dilly. “We’ll get the parts in order. I’ll contact Griselda and Serafina and let them know what’s coming.” You admit, you really hoped there’d have been better choices. But you suppose this is the best you’re going to get. And besides, you can always convert it back to a Pershing if a rule doesn’t stick. Buying a tank outright means having to sell it if the rules don’t stick.

Perrine smiles. “We’ll have it ready in a jiffy.” She gives you a two finger salutes then leaves you for now. Right then.

You receive a text message then and there. It’s Griselda.

> GrisGris: Doing the briefing now. Get here when you’re ready.

Well. You’re ready now actually. You hurry out of the hangar.

You pop into the tent and find everyone sitting obediently, taking notes, and taking a look at the map. Instead of just you, Iris, and Griselda. It was all the members of the team. Everybody. “So what we have here is Nanjing on the right side of the map. I’m proposing that we employ a strategy of guerilla urban warfare. We draw them into the tight streets where their superior gunnery and their armor will amount for little in close quarters fighting. You all know the drill. Straight up brawls. Close combat is going to equalize us against their modern tanks. And we know for a fact that they haven’t had time to familiarize themselves with the T-54s for too long.”

“Do we have a back up plan in case that doesn’t work?” asks Denise.

“Well, we draw them out into the countryside, try and string them out,” Griselda remarks. “We hit them from multiple angles, try to find a hole. Remember, this isn’t an elimination match. This is a flag match. Eliminating Mei is the goal. And eliminating me is theirs. Numbers won’t matter here.”

“I think they do,” says Serina. “We’re still pretty badly outnumbered.” Everyone mutters, clearly a little disquieted.
>>

You’re about to step in when Griselda speaks up. “Yeah, so what if we’re outnumbered. We’ve faced tougher opponents before. And it wasn’t just me or Elodie or Iris doing the heavy work. You all pitched in your share. You’re all the reason this team made it this far. Elodie’s been knocked out a few times. So have I, so has Iris. We’re all in this together.” The disquieting stops. “I ain’t going to stand here and listen to people mope. We’re not here to mope, we’re here to make some fucking history. Now, I want everyone to remember that this is the last match. We’re going all in. Everyone fights. No one quits.”

Claudia nods. “Yeah, that’s good and all. But with all those tanks…”

“Claudia, we do have a decent chance of losing,” says Griselda. “But if we lose, we’ll make it a loss that everyone will remember forever.” Claudia is quiet at that. “Anyone else?” Silence, except for some admiring stares. “Right. You’re all good. Dismissed. Get some dinner and try to rest up.” Everyone stands up and starts walking out.

“Elodie!” Griselda motions you over, smiling. “Sorry, you missed most of the brief. But I think we have a fairly basic battle plan. Now, I know Mei is smart. I think she'll try to set up in some other town and wait for us but..." She taps her finger against your heart. "She's out for your blood. And if you don't show yourself, she'll thirst for you. Like a man trapped in the Sahara. Think it’ll work?”

>>
> “I think it should.”

“I think it should.” It’s a very basic plan, but Griselda is right. Mei isn’t doing this purely to win. She’s doing it to win over you and over the Shimada household. She’s out for blood and by God there is blood in the water. “Seems you have things under control here, Griselda.”

“Yeah, for once,” she mutters. “But hey, I got the call. We’re upgrading the Pershing to a Patton I believe?” You nod. “Guess we didn’t have too much choice, went for the safe option. That’s not too bad. And I think Serafina will love it. She knows how to use that tank properly, I think being stuffed into a Patton will actually improve her ability somewhat.”

“Let’s hope so.”

Griselda folds her arms, sighing. “Listen, Elodie. I just want to say thanks again.”

“Oh, you-“

“No, no, let me finish,” she says. “You’ve been with me since day one. You were here during some pretty dark times in my life and during some awful moments for this team. I should say the same for everyone once this is all over too. Nobody gave up, nobody quit. We all came close I’m sure but we never crossed that line. I’m just glad to have a team like this. It’ll be a shame to see it break up once people start graduating or leaving for other pursuits.” You’re quiet at that. As much as you hate to admit it, Griselda is right. A team like this only comes once in a blue moon. And even then, it won’t last the year, maybe even two years. But the good thing is that hopefully they’ll be replaced by fresher faces who are just as eager for Tankery as you and Griselda are.

“Well, Griselda, thank you too,” you say. Griselda blinks, confused. “You gave me the opportunity. I’m just glad I can repay you in kind with service. I know my beef with Mei is a little on the-… it’s between me and her and not you but I’m just glad this is the way things are.”

“If we face the end, we’ll face it together.” She pats your arm, grinning. “Listen. Take the rest of the night off. And get rested. Tomorrow we face our destiny. Whether we win or lose.” She steps to the tent flaps, then turn around to face you with a smile. “People are gonna remember us.” She huffs, puffing her chest out a bit. “Damn if it doesn’t feel like we’re going to live forever. Well. I’m gonna have one last talk with my crew. Yuno, Luisa… Athena and Tessa.” She nods. “And maybe give one last word to Gertrude too. You stay safe, Ellie.”

“Griselda.” You nod to her. Griselda turns and leaves the tent.

With that. What should you do now?

But call JJ. Tradition is we spend the night before battle with the crew, and the night after with him.

You send Jock your well wishes and apologize for not spending the night with him. He understands at least. And he should know, the night after, he’s all yours.

For now, it was about getting the tanks up and ready. Perrine’s mechanics, mechanics from Robert A. Heinlein Military Academy, Camp Gagetown, and George Washington Military Academy had already arrived to get things underway. The M26 Pershing had been pulled apart and opened up to its barest form to allow for the new modifications to get set in. As for your Comet, it was all about getting the gun sights fixed in right.

Stack rubs some sweat off of her brow. “Not how I imagined spending my last night before the match.”

“Yeah,” says Ingrid. “But hey, at least we’re together.”

Stack makes a kissy face at Ingrid. “Aw, thanks, booboo.” Ingrid smacks her lips at Stack, mockingly. “one of these days, nerd, you’re going to get what’s coming.”

“What, a lucrative career in baseball analyzation and statistics while you languish away after retiring from the sport and spending all your life earnings on short-term luxuries and end up in elderly care thinking about the good old days?” asks Ingrid.

Stack stares at Ingrid. “… are you traumatized by something?”

“Guys, come on, don’t goof around,” says Josephina. She and Winona shove the cleaning rod down the barrel of the Comet to get rid of everything inside.

Winona squeals, holding the rod tightly. “It feels so great knowing we’re working alongside Perrine! I could just die!”

“Sometimes I wish you would,” says Stack as she loads new shells into the Comet’s shell rack. She pops up out of the loaders hatch and looks at you as you pin new treads onto the wheels. “Hey, Elodie. I know it’s a foregone conclusion and all, but you think we’re going to win out there tomorrow?”

“Of course we are,” says Winona. “We have Elodie leading us.”

“I’m asking her opinion,” says Stack. “This is a tough match we got coming. I don’t want the Commander to feel like she has anything to prove out there.” She looks down at you with a serious expression. “Elodie. What do you think?”

For better or worse, we'll show Mei what real Tankery is.

Mei doesn't know how to win matches, just how to out buy opponents. Her crew's are good, but off balance in their new tanks. We know our tanks, we know each other. We're ready, they're still learning. We don't get sloppy and we can win.

“We’ll win. Or for better or worse, Mei will get shown what real Tankery is,” you say. You all step off of the tank and look at Oliver.

You like to think that Jock right now is one of the most important boys in your life. But that’s simply not true. Oliver is. He’s carried you from day one all the way here. You’ve given him purpose, you’ve fixed his armor up, made his tracks jingle jangle, and you’ve brought him to hell and back. He doesn’t have the scars but he certainly has the aura of venerability. Stack smiles. “Maybe when we all graduate, Oliver’s going to find himself a crew just like us.”

“Maybe,” says Ingrid.

“Not maybe, definitely.” Winona grins. “I’m proud to have a tank like him. Even if he is disgustingly vanilla.”

You nod. “Everyone. Bow to Oliver and say your thanks. He’s given it his all.”

With that, you all bow in the presence of Oliver. “Thank you very much, Oliver!”

He has one more job to do tomorrow. And that’s to show the world what you’re made of.
