Opening Post
You are Alice Ashbedight, a Black Elf recently made a Dullahan necromancer. Despite some difficulties, life is looking up for you recently. But it is not without its challenges - after killing a bunch of bandits and doing necromancery things, you had a strange dreamlike vision of a Humanoid jackal creature who set out to hunt you down. And according to the dream, it may even have been an uncalled for decision. You're still not sure whether it was just a strange and particularly vivid dream, or an actual omen. Either way, you're not gonna be caught flatfooted if it turns out to be trouble.

As you sit peacefully among the pretty yellow flowers and bask in the presence of the negative aura enveloping the place, you slowly fill up your reserves of the dark energy. During this time, you ask Nar-khur how the delivery of the prisoners went.

"No problems master. They were all very anxious to get back to civilization, so we walked at a good pace. No encounters either. And no trouble with the watch. Well that part is to be expected, the former prisoners did vouch for my story, after all. Ran back as fast as I could after that, though I admit I stopped to have a bite to eat on the way.. Found a half rotten human corpse, you see, an' couldn't help myself". He has a thoughtful expression when saying the last part, like he's not sure why. "Sure is handy though, not getting tired from running anymore. I swear, I sprinted the entire way back! It was really amazing". He seems to enjoy his new state of being.

There's a handful of people nearby in the grave of the nameless, but none within earshot. Sierra, however, heard it, and you can tell that she is equal parts disturbed & confused about what he said about eating a corpse, but she doesn't comment on it. Well she doesn't know that he's undead, yet. Should you tell her? It's gonna be hard to keep it a secret if you're gonna travel together..

"It's fine, you made it in time", you answer him, "I'll pay for an actual meal for you after this is over".

"Thank you, mistress, that sounds nice. But... What is, 'this'?"

Right, you hadn't told him. Or Sierra, either. Figuring it's better for them to know, you tell them of the dream you had, and that you're not sure what to expect, but that it felt like more than just a dream.

Neither of them seem completely sure what to make of it, and you don't blame them - you don't really know what to make of it yourself. But at least now they know that there may be trouble soon.

You don't really know how soon that is, however, and figuring you may have some time until the encounter, you brought your books, so that you have something to read, in case you got bored.

Tina also brought the enchanted Estoc. You don't know how strong it is, but it should at least be somewhere around the strength of her own longsword. Hopefully the sunlight won't be too harsh on her, if you have to fight the Beastblood from your dream.

You start idly looking through "The Basics of Ritualistic Theory, & 'how to' on Basic Magic Circles". There's a lot to read here, an according to the title, this is just the basics. Seems there's a lot to know about magic if you want to become a respectable mage, huh. Which makes you wonder, how strong is Sierra really? She never got to use a spell when you killed the bandits.

You hand Sierra the book, and ask her "how strong of a mage are you? What can you do?"

She reluctantly takes the book, and opens it. "..Wha-? Oh, uhm, I'm level three". Only level three, huh? You had kind of expected her to be at least level five, like you.

But it's apparent that she has yet to feel safe in your company. Hard to blame her, given that her life was still hovering just earlier this day. Still, if she will be travelling with you for the time being, it would be best if she were to calm down.

"Mmh, level three", you say, "so what specifically can you do? I'd like to know what I have to work with".

She's hesitant, in a nervous sort of way. Well, not that she could hide her fear from you if she tried - you can literally taste it upon the air. It's not that bad - she's not actually scared, just slightly so.

"I, uh.. Well.. I'm proficient with electricity based magic, like I said.. So far I've focused on the martial combat aspect of it, and through it I have mastered two spells so far: summoning a blade of pure electricity that I wield in melee, and the creation of a thunderbolt. Something for melee, and something for long range. I opt for the latter, if I have a choice."

Once she gets into it, she seems pretty sure of herself, and her fear disappears temporarily.

...

After about half an hour of waiting, something happens. You feel a presence of something a moment before you see it - somewhere off to the side, out from an alley between two houses, walks the jackal Beastblood from your dream, and it exudes an air of authority and charisma. It's a large man, probably around 2 meters/6,5 ft tall, and it wears some sort of metal armour, half covered in ritual robes of dark sandy colours. In its mainhand it wields a wavy two handed sword, which rests upon its shoulder.

It walks straight for you, and as it gets closer, you can see a white light glow in its eyes, its feels like an abundant lifeforce is present in this creature.

You stand up to be ready to act, and the creature calls out to you with a loud voice that seems to be strangely hollow.

"Foul being of undeath and vile magics!", and here he points his sword at you, "face judgment for your sins, and return to the earth where you belong.."

The being is currently about 30 meters/100 ft away from you.
You currently have:
Negative Energy: 34 / 50
Black Sapphire bonus capacity: 50 / 50

Prodigious size alone does not dissuade the sharpened blade

You glare at the being.

"Nothing to say for yourself, abomination?"

"...It doesn't seem like anything I say will change your mind... I don't think I'm the enemy you're looking for, but if you attack me, I will fight back". If what you saw in your vision is true, then you're probably not meant to be enemies, but you cant' think of a reasonable way to change its mind. But then again, you never were all that good at persuading people.

"It is not a matter of changing my mind, unnatural one. I am a guardian of the order of life and death, and your cycle should have ended, but since it did not, I will end it for you. It is that simple. I merely offered you the courtesy of last words".

"I'm not gonna let that happen", Tina objects. You can tell that she wants to say something else, but doesn't.

You look to Sierra, and say "back me up". Though you are not facing her directly, you can vaguely see that she nods from the corner of your eye.

You then look at Tina, and with a hushed voice you say "keep your distance from him, and see if you can maybe use the rapier from a distance or something, okay? Stay safe".

She smiles tiredly, and says "gotcha, but only if you stay safe as well".

You look at the 'guardian', and say "I still think this is a mistake. I'm pretty sure in fact".

The guardian hold up his left hand as to indicate 'stop', and loudly says "there are NO mistakes when it comes to the UNDEAD, small one! Your kind shall find NO PEACE in this world... I would tell you to offer me your neck to make it painless, but I realize the futility in that suggestion, given your nature. You, the bloodsucker, on the other hand, the offer remains for you. Submit, and pain shall not mark your final death".

He then wields his sword with both hands, and advances towards you.

You are facing Cepocess, Guardian Beast of the Dying

(cont.)
>>
As you realize the guardian won't back down, you order your four servants to act as frontline, with Brute taking the lead. He is the most durable, after all. As they take position, you empower them all with an [Undead Flame], bolstering their offensive capabilities.

In a way, you don't want to be the one to strike the first blow, but failing to utilize the range advantage would just be stupid, especially given how you don't really have a read on your opponents strength, except you can tell he is to be taken seriously.

But as soon as you imbue your servants with [Undead Flame], the guardian rushes towards your servants with dauntless speed. Halfway there, Sierra invokes a lightning bolt that shears through the air with a violent roar for but a split second, and connects with the guardian's torso. And although you can tell it rips open a spot in his ceremonial garbs, you have no idea how much it actually hurt him, seeing as it didn't slow his sprint in the slightest.

Brute flails for the guardian, but its strike finds only air as the guardian evades with grace, and strikes Brute with his great strength behind his sword. A ruthless cut, but it only rends a small gash into Brute's abdomen... But out from the backside of Brute, opposite of the entrywound, arcs an intense white flame forth in a conic shape and scorches the Brute as well as Fast Zombie. Nar-khur's fast reflexes allow him to only get partially hit, but you can tell that this fire is nothing to be trifled with.

Fast Zombie strikes blindly for the guardian throught the fires, but hits nothing, and Nar-khur's evasive maneuver makes him miss the guardian as well. And although the [Undead Flame] does still hit the guardian, it doesn't seem to inflict as much damage as it usually does.

(cont.)
>>
Laughing Dead, on the other hand, was in a good position to assault the guardian. It lunges wildly at the guardian while it starts cackling like a madman, and while each of its strikes aren't all that impressive, it still has a lot more attacks that most. Several cuts starts to decorate the guardian, but it still seems to be in pretty decent shape. But it has difficulty defending against so many opponents at the same time.

At this point, you gather up 5 negative energy to summon a [Energy Negative: Javelin], which you immediately let loose towards the guardian. The low reverberating sound of the javelin doesn't stand out much compared to the rest of the sounds of combat, but it flies with violent speed and penetrates the guardian with efficiency. And sure enough, that causes him to stagger, but only for a moment before evading another strike.

Tina seems be be trying to find an opening, while experimenting with the estoc, but she keeps her distance for now.

Brute seems to have taken quite a wound, but he is pretty tough, so he should be able to handle it for now.
Fast Zombie is not in good shape from the fire, but he isn't all that strong to begin with.
Nar is realtively fine.
'Cepocess, Guardian Beast of the Dying', is lightly injured, about at 80 % hp.

As your melee servants are fiercely engaged, and somewhat evenly matched in melee, you try your best to heal them up, and support them with a few javelins. It's a pretty daunting task, honestly, you can hardly keep up even if you focus on just healing them, though it helps mitigate some of the damage. But healing is actually pretty taxing on your reserves, you spent 20 energy just mitigating the damage your servants took for around 5 seconds.

And with the third javelin piercing the guardian, you start to notice that he must have some sort of damage resistance to negative energy - it feels like the the javelins partialy dissipate before doing proper damage to him. Maybe half damage or so. Frustrating...

A strange anger goads your mind, and you feel like ripping the guardian's head off. Unarmed, if you had to.

When the guardian bisects your Fast Zombie with a downward slash, you try to have the rest of them swarm him. And it works out rather well - they are quickly upon him, and with his unwieldy sword he can't really manage to get any momentum behind his attacks. Your servants, especially Nar, seem to be able to get some wounds in on the guardian. But it's easy to see that the beast is unnaturally tough.

While they are struggling, you take a moment to try and reason with the creature again. It does take a bit of effort on your part, given how frustratingly difficult the creature is to defeat. You swallow your anger, and talk.

"Your white raven friend warned me of your arrival!". You have to sort of shout it to be sure it gets through. "I'm sure it doesn't want either of us to die, I don't think you have the entire picture!".

The guardian struggles to free itself, and every now and then you see the white flames on its claws, as it punishes your servants for being close. It doesn't seem Nar's bite works as intended, or maybe he just needs to use it more? Either way, the guardian actually answers you.

(cont.)
>>
"You know of the white ravens?! What trickery is this?! No! I shall not falter, every Undead creature is an enemy, cease your lies Undead witch!"

Halfway through the sentence, he starts glowing with a white light from his torso, specifically where a heart usually is, and the light intensifies while he speaks. As he shouts 'Undead witch!', another round of white fire bursts forth from him, but this time out of every part of his body, like an erupting inferno. The fire spreads with extreme speed, and before you can even react, you're covered in fire as well. It burns, and it hurts. Not in a panicky way. Although you feel pain, you don't really care about it.

And just as soon as it appeared, just as soon is it gone. The only proof remaining is how everything nearby is singed. Laughing Dead is gone, and Nar is staggering from the pain, only Brute is holding onto the guardian.

At least Tina's and your rings gave some measure of protection towards the flames.

Tina is hurting, but still standing.
Sierra is badly hurt, but she mostly just looks angry for it, as she throws another thunderbolt in the guardian's direction with a furious shout.

To hell with this damned son of a flaming whore beast. And to hell with this. If javelins aren't doing the trick, a more brutal approach will do.

You wield your scythe, and charge the ungodly wretch.

With a fierce swing, and some measure of luck, you cut absolutely deep into its torso, splitting it opon as sand(?) start pouring out of the guardian's wound, and it lets out a pained roar.

A victory - perhaps a turning point.

You really, really, really, want to rip this beast apart with naught but your hands. But as much as you want to, you know that you aren't exactly strong, and it frustrates you. That voice of irritation in your head from earlier seems to find foothold, and find a voice in your actions. Like a tide, anger clouds your reasoning. No, not anger. Malice. Inherent evil. You want to inflict as much pain and suffering as possible right now. You want to ravage its inners, pollute its blood, perverse its very existence and arrogantly terrorize this stuck up fool with ruthless mauling.

The guardian thrashes about with your Brute, in a primal duel of subduing each other. The guardian does what it can to break free, and while you relentlessly, repeatedly, skewer his disgusting form with your scythe, he has the audacity to ignite more of his bullshit fire, scorching both you and Brute in a searing inferno.

You can feel your negative energy falter in your burned form, this cannot continue.

That's when Brute and Nar get an opportunity - the guardian seems to have exhausted himself with that last blast of fire, and they push him to the ground, and it seems Nar's paralysis is starting to work a little.

You sense weakness in the guardian. His broken form still struggles, and if you give him time he may yet break free, or conjure more of his bullshit fire. All you want for him is suffering, so much so that he loses all sense of sight, so much pain that he goes insane from the sheer disorentation of it.

And you think you know how to inflict and unbridled amount of pain.

You tap into a source inside you, something vile. A sensation spreads in your right hand, and it cannot possibly be described as anything but malicious. Delicious malice, it truly fits what you feel, and what you want right now. You throw you scythe to the side, without even looking where it lands, and kneel down to the struggling guardian, and place your right hand upon his neck.

This is the first time you feel fear from this being. He can tell that what is about to come is surely something to dread. His fear tastes exquisite, and it only works to make you even more eager to impose cruelty upon him. He writhes and thrashes, as you force your vile existance into his neck, and make this horrid force grab hold of his spine. And as soon as it is completely engulfed, and tied to the will of your hand, you viciously rip out his spine with murderous passion.

An exquisitely disgusting sound is the only thing that makes any noise, as each vertebra is forced to let go of the bloody flesh that it was attached to it. You hear someone vomit at the sight. Then a cracking sound takes its place, as the spine is forcibly reshaped into something reminiscent of a spiked bone whip, and you can feel the atrocity that this weapon represents. You hope that the creature will never find true rest, as long as you have this whip.

Such an act made you so excited that you forgot all about time and place, and it takes a few moments before you realize the fighting is truly over, the rest of the guardian is but a bloody pulp of spineless flesh, with half its ripcage sticking out the back.

A very small part of you considers using [Requiem] on the slain foe, but you quickly dismiss that notion. No, you have embraced the atrocity you commited here, that being shall never know rest if you can help it. You need this.

As you look around, you see Tina is still alive. Only Fast Zombie and Laughing Dead were destroyed in the process. And... Quite a few onlookers have gathered, probably around 50, and you even spot a guardsman who looks at you with open mouth. Due to your sharp ears, you catch some murmurs from crowd.

"She's an Undead..?"
"..But she saved us"
"Look, the monster killed that kid with its fire"

You look around, and notice that a few unrelated people got caught in the firestorm the guardian created.

"Someone should call a paladin order to cleanse her"
"Poor girl, she was just minding her own business when that thing showed up"
"You can't trust a Dark Elf, and an Undead to boot!"

(cont.)
>>
You notice that Sierra is still fuming, but is starting to calm down some, as pain from her burns lets itself be known. Smells kind of like bacon. Tina is badly burnt to, not as bad as you though. But you're also pretty sure you could handle it better than her, given your level. Your cloth blouse is badly burnt, as well as your hooded robe. If it weren't for your chainshirt, you'd probably look... Indecent, right now.

Nar and Brute are still covered in a layer of black flame from your buff, and both of them are also considerably roughed up. But... Oh.. For some reason, the transmutation that made any of them look alive is gone. You could reapply it but... So many people saw... At least the guardsman isn't attacking you, that's a good sign, right?

What should you do in this situation?

(you are at about 40 % hp, and only have 38 negative energy left in total)

Look around, the fire that scorched you, it came from the dog. If you don't want me here, I shall leave, but I shall leave in peace. If you excuse me, i will now lay my dead to rest and heal those that have been hurt."

>We might be able to convince them that the guy meant "Undead Witch" like "A Naturally Talented Female Necromancer."
Difficult, we might do so with those open-mind people, but not with racists and from what we can save of their exclamations they're a lot, and probably will spread out like a fire in a dry forest. Also, well, I think is a waste to leave such an interesting corpse there, I mean, giving the flow of what happened and the state of mind of Alice things should happen to it.
>>
>>3081484
Not a bad speech.

The spine whip is Bad. It was the worst part of the Dark Elf Necromancer that everyone fears. Put the spine back on the body. "You thought you were doing the right thing, but you are wrong." (requiem echo). " Rest and consider the White Raven. I know you will be back." ( And I suspect this is only a manifestation and he will be back unless we show by acts that we are not all evil.)

Turn to Sierra and burnt child - "Can I try to heal you with White Mana?" If Sierra allows try the Undead Heal but with the White Positive energy, strengthen existing patterns. If she is better offer to help the other burnt. If she refuses, offer to help someone else.
>>
>>3082995
Y'know what would be an interesting upgrade for us? The ability to convert one either Negative or Positive energy into it's opposite. Granted the price might be a bit expensive, but it would be a emergency button in the case of not having enough of one but a large amount of the other and needing the one with the lesser right away.
>>
>>3081389
That would be a fun sight. Head would plop right off..

>>3081484
No no, it's cool. I almost always appreciate write-ins, whether I use them or not. You are by no means interfering - you all have a voice as to what Alice does, thinks, and feels. I especially enjoy it cos it seems you put some effort into making it a proper speech.

>>3083092
Versatility is always handy!

Also, for next update: I'm by no means ignoring any of your posts, they will be taken into account. However, due to the crit fail one the self-control/morality check, some parts of Alice's mindset is set in stone for now. But that doesn't mean you votes haven't affected it.

As for whether that update will be coming today: no promises. Sort of tired today.

Btw QM, question here, how this world works? Its govern is democratic, theocratic, monarchical, fascist, republican, aristocratic, dictatorship, presidentialism? And who manage the towns and cities? Do we have emperor, kings and so?
>>
>>3084405
Varies a lot from region to region. The country you are in is a monarchy. Usually control of each city is outsourced to vassals of royalty, with the monarch only governing a few directly themselves. These vassal titles are most often gained by one of three options: 1) being of excellent service to the kingdom, and being recognized for it. 2) inherited the title. Or 3) recognition through martial prowess, usually in war.

Right, it seems diplomacy is the way to go. 1d00+7, best of three. Crit fail & success will be 1-3 & 98-100.

Defeated Cepocess, Guardian Beast of the Dying!
As a result of your extraordinary performance, and what I believe is Alice's first in-combat critical hit and an extremely fitting set of high & low rolls, a surge changes part of your class!

From now on, whenever you gain a level up, your increase in physical power & physical defence will gain a larger bump than before changed from +1 per level up to +3 per level up.

Everyone is looking at either you, your group, or the fallen. A guy steps forward as he pushes through the crows, at first you mistook him for a guard, but at a second glance, he's probably one of the so called adventurers. A Wild Elf of average height, tan skin, brown messy hair, wearing a sort of chainmail armour, a set of shiny iron boots, a sturdy set of forearm bracers that match the boots. In their sheaths at his belt are two swords of some kind, and while he hasn't drawn them, his hands rest on their hilts. You're pretty sure his metal equipment is made of some sort of extravagant material, like mithril or moonsilver. Probably enchanted too, to some degree. in either case, there's no doubt that this guy is no pushover.

A hunch tells you that this guy is of a higher level than you, probably 5-10 levels higher. In other words, a serious threat. If you had to hazard a guess, you'd say he is about as powerful as the foe you just defeated. You don't really know where this hunch comes from, but you feel confident in your estimate.

"What's going on here, and where did these Undead come from?"

He looks at you, then Tina, then Sierra, clearly unsure as to who to adress.

It's definitely gonna be important how you treat this encounter, but you have other things you want to take care of first. First of all, the safety of your childhood friend. The thought of her dying due to your negligence... That would be the start of an different chapter in your life entirely.

She's badly hurt, but it doesn't seem to be getting any worse as it is. But you want to be sure, so you guide her to the shade of a tree, and start channelling some negative energy into her wounds, while you answer the adventurer. She looks slightly surprised at the gesture, but says "thanks", while looking around, gauging the situation.

Lifting up a hand, you say "..that'd be my responsibility. But don't worry, I didn't raise them from the innocents in these graves - I brought them from outside the city".

While you're healing Tina with one hand, you bring over Brute with the other, and use [Requiem] on it with your offhand. You feel that this should be a very diffiult task, using these two abilities at the same time, but it feels natural enough to you that you don't think there's any chance you could mess it up.

Brute dissipates into black ash quickly enough, as you whisper "thank you for your services, you did well. Now rest.."

Your hope is that by removing the big scary looking Undead, people will calm down some, and hopefully you can at least leave peacefully.

"Well, isn't this really your job, shouldn't you be doing this? Don't worry, I'll cover you if something happens". It doesn't seem the Wild Elf spoke to you. You turn you head and see that he adressed the guard, who fumbles a bit with his weapon, a lucerne, before he straightens up, clears his throat, and approach you, but stop at about 10 meters/30 ft distance.

(cont.)
>>
"Uh, ahem. Right. So uh... What's all this about, young miss?"

At this point you're done healing Tina, and laying your servants to rest, so you turn to face him properly.

Your eyes turn to the beast you killed, and at the spine in your hand, the spine that you extracted from the guardian. This event marked you, somehow. You want to be a good person, and you want to make good decisions. This... isn't it. It's bizarre. You want to treat other people well, and you want to be good... But something inside of doesn't allow it to be so simple. Some malicious bitterness needs to take it out on others. And you feel a lot better after what you did. Part of you does, anyway. You can't quite place how you feel about it all, but one thing is certain: you're keeping the whip (even if you're not certain if you'll ever use it), and you're not putting that beast to rest, even if part of you is disgusted at your own spiteful nature.

"I.. I'm not entirely sure why that thing attacked me", you finally say. You look at the innocents who got caught in the flashes of fire. Ten of them total. You kind of want to put them to rest, but... Maybe it's not a good idea right now. "..If you want, I can help heal up some of the wounded? I have a bit of energy left for it.. No more than five people though, if even that many of them live. I know people are confused and scared right now, but there's no need. The monster is slain, and that was really the only threat here - none of my attacks harmed any innocents. And if you want me to leave, that's fine too, but please let me leave peacefully them".

From just a cursory glance, it's hard to tell if the majority of them are even alive. You see one twitch, but the rest aren't moving, so they're either unconscious or dead.

"Huh? Aren't you a necr- ah, whatever, yes, please, if you can help them before a priest gets here that'd be helpful. No funny business however! I'm keeping an eye on you".

"No problem, I'll show you the process first, so you know what it looks like. Sierra? Come over here a sec, I'll tend to some of your burns".

Her 'combat-mode' expression has changed, and by now is entirely replaced by a pained expression, and she lets out a whimper as she walks over to you.

"Thanks, appreciate it", she meekly says.

(cont.)
>>
You then use your positive energy to heal her a little. It makes the burn significantly less serious, but it doesn't heal her completely up. Well, you didn't expect much, spending only 1 point. It'll take the edge off her pain, and while you could heal her more, some of these people may need it to live.

They didn't ask for this shit in their lives... What a callous disregard for life that bastard had. Killing ten innocents was okay, so long as it killed one 'guilty' target?

As the complex shapes of light streams through her being, you feel the warmth of life soothing her wounds, and the guard lets out shocked exclamation.

At the guard's approval, you check on the burnt innocents. You sublty use [Requiem] on the dead, seeing no harm in it. Turns out there's only two living targets - a young boy, and a middle aged woman, Humans both. It only takes a little positive energy to heal them both up completely, and you're actually left with some spare energy, even after healing them up.

As the rest of their burns revert to regular skin, they are given some simple cloth from the guard to cover themselves. They are both startled by waking up to see you, a half-crispy Dark Elf, using some sort of magic on them.

"Ahh! - don't worry, the young miss is helping you, you were badly burnt you see, but she saved you", then guard reassures them.

Both of their attitudes change to thankful ones, in different ways though. While the woman's expression is something along the lines of humbly thankful, the boy's is closer to something along the lines of being embarrassed after making a mistake, as he scratches his neck and says "thank you nice lady!", with an awkward, but honest, smile. You even think he's blushing..? It can't be that embarrassing...

Just as you fix them up, and you help them up along with the guard, it seems reinforcements arrive - another twelve guards at least, as well as two of the gray robed guards, and a few other people in between them who you can't see properly yet.

They are all armed and ready, but the first guard tells them the story, pretty insistent on painting you as the hero here. You can tell that the leader of the newly arrived squad is skeptical about it, but he doesn't object to the story.

(cont.)
>>
One of the figures in gray robes pitches in, "oh yeah, I remember this one. She was at the headquarters earlier, you know, the ones who did in all those bandits by themselves?"

Sierra is still burnt pretty badly, and you have spare positive energy left, so you speak up. "Would you mind if I healed up the rest of my group? We still have wounded.."

The squad leader holds up a hand in a 'stop' gesture, and says "hold on. Emrien?", as he looks for someone among his group.

A young Halforc woman, probably around 20 or so, steps forward from among the group. She's wearing some sort of priestly clothing, but you can tell that there's some sort of heavy armour underneath it, and around her neck she wears a necklace pendant with a symbol to some God - one of the good ones, you're fairly certain.

"Those who need healing of any kind, come to me. But I'll need to know who amongst you are Undead, so as to not harm you".

The squad leader then says "right, when you have all been healed up, I will need you lot -", here he points at you, Tina, Sierra, & Nar, "and you two as well -", the two you healed, "to follow me back to the headquarters for questioning".

How do you respond to the priestess' question?

I'm totally fine with this. We don't even know why we were reanimated as a necromancer, or by what. So having side-effects from being undead just makes the entire quest more interesting and doesn't make us players to god-equals who can always do the right thing.

It's good that you turn split votes into internal conflict. It's also good that you use narrative to keep the MC in character. Players will always try to to be pragmatic and 'win' every encounter. It happens that those who vote IC even if it would 'fail' the situation get yelled at to hell and back. MCs tend to become sociopaths if you don't put your foot down and make them really work to gradually change the character's morals and ethics. Don't be afraid of limiting choices to IC options, either. If there are votes you see that have some traction but didn't win, or are inappropriate at the moment, write them down and save them for a rainy day.

I think this was a good update and you included the player arguments in a reasonable way. Remember that it is also your character and your story.

No worries here, QM, as was proved in the narrative it was a good decision to do so, like this anon said >>3088809

>>
It's a deal you've done your best to hide so far, but since the proverbial cat is out of the bag, you figure you might as well be honest. Especially since it appears you're not really in trouble. You stand in front of the surprisingly tall, and well-kempt Halforc, and decide to be honest, but without revealing specifics. She gives your group a once over, and claps her hands together with a semi energetic spirit.

"Good, so who's who?"

"She's living", you tip your head towards Sierra, "and so are those two over there, but they should be fine. I don't think any of the other civilians survived.."

When you look over at the civilians, you notice some young Human, probably 15 of age, dressed in similar vestments as the Halforc, but he looks to be some sort of apprentice, if his apparel is anything to judge by. He's examining the burnt townsfolk, maybe to see if anyone of them can be saved.

Continuing, you say "But the three of us are healed by negative energy. Though lately I'm not too sure how I work, when it comes to energies..."

The Halforc tilts her head in curiosity at your last comment. She raise an eyebrow, but shrugs with both hands.

"No matter, I can offer either type of energy, but I guess you'll want to be healed with negative energy, right?", you nod, "Good. I'll be gentle with it, since you seem unsure. Anyway, let's start with you, you look the worst off".

She raises her hands, about to do some sort of spell, but you raise a hand in objection.

"Actually, could you start with her?", you point a thumb at Tina, "I'm not getting any worse, and I wanna be sure she's fine.."

Tina recoils at that suggestion, but forces herself to quickly regain her composure.

"Uh, how about NO?! You are so much worse off than I am"

"Yeah, I know it looks bad, but it doesn't even hurt, and if-"

Tina raises her voice a little, as she interrupts you.

"I don't care! You're horribly hurt! No way I'm letting my best friend wait in line while I'm taken care of, especially for something that may as well be a chipped nail next to your wounds! Gods you should see yourself right now.."

(cont.)
>>
Her bewildered - and worried - demeanor tells you that there's no arguing. And judging from her gusto, she does seem to be fine, mostly. Fiiine... You acquiesce, with a resigned sigh, and let the healer tend to you first.

The Halforc takes a moment to measure if you're done arguing, and seems to decide that it's safe to assume she's still be starting with you. Taking a step closer, she rest her right hand on your right shoulder, close her eyes, and begins a hushed chant. Her brows furrow, and she seems rather concentrated on this systematic spell. A few seconds later you feel negative energy pour into your body, and fix what is broken. It's not a lot at once, so it takes a minute or two for her to finish, but by then you are completely healed up.

"There, good as new" you proclaim, as her spell ends. You don't want to seem rude, but you want Tina healed up as soon as possible. Plus, you've got a fence to take care of.

The process repeats, with Tina taking your place, but it's much faster with her, since she had less that needed fixing.

When she moves on to Sierra, you make sure to remind the Halforc that Sierra is not Undead. While the Halforc chants her spell at Sierra, you take the moment to adress the guardsman who spoke with you.

"I don't mind joining you for some questioning or whatever, but there a catch to it, in a way.. I'm supposed to fetch a fence associated to the bandits I recently put an end to, and if I don't do it soon, he may catch wind of trouble and take off before I reach him".

The guardsleader's mouth twist in annoyance, but he looks like he's understanding of the issue.

"Tsk. Alrighty. Eh.. Let's see.. Do you know where to find him?"

"I'm not entirely sure, but I have a general idea". You can see the guy would rather just bring you back at once, so you decide to try and be accomodating. "How about some of your people escort Sierra here, while she looks for the Dwarf? She's really the one who knows best what he looks like. The rest of us could come with you immediately then".

(cont.)
>>
It's easy to tell that he's relieved to have an easier solution served. "Sounds good". He looks over his shoulder, "Vicker, Sa-iil, you two escort the Beastblood and help her track down the criminal Dwarf and bring the both of them back afterwards. The rest of you, with me".

Then he looks back at you. "I'm assuming that's all?"

You look at Tina, and Nar who just got patched up as well, and neither of them seems to have any objections to leaving now. While you do look at them, you notice the book you had handed Sierra, in her hands. She must have picked it up again. At first glance it looks badly burnt, but upon a closer look, the fires seems to have only marked the surface, and damaged the cover. Hopefully that means the pages themselves are fine.

Nodding to the guardsman, you confirm that you're all ready to leave. You consider yourself lucky, seeing as the guards are being polite enough for now. You wouldn't have been surprised if they were overly pushy and disregard anything you said. People with authority can be like that, in your brief experiences with them.

While walking you decide to speak to the Halforc who healed you, figuring that she may know something about the guardian who attacked you, seeing as she's a woman of the cloth.

Just as you're about to call out to her, you realize you didn't quite catch her name. You've never been stellar at remembering people. Probably because you stopped caring about strangers. Back in Rydding, it took you decades to remember Latch's name, even though you visited his shop every now while running errands. While you were a kid, Humans entered and left your life so quickly that just when you were about to get attached to someone, they would have matured enough that they'd stop caring for you. No regular teenager would want to be friends with a girl who's around 7, after all. It didn't help that you started disliking most people later on either.

"...Uh", you clear your throat, realizing your voice was too low. "Uh, Halforc priestess?", you simply call out to her.

It takes her a moment to notice that you're talking to her, and for a second you worry you phrased it in a bad way, but it doesn't seem like it.

(cont.)
>>
"Yes?"

"I was wondering if I could get your opinion on something?"

"Shoot".

You then tell her of your strange dream, related to the guardian creature. Of how it seems the white raven came to warn you of the guardian, even though they seemed to be friends or allies.

"It sounds like a run-in with some spiritual beings, but the particular ones don't ring any bells to me, unfortunately. It sounds interesting though. My best guess would be either you stepped into the domain of some sort of lesser deity, or maybe you caught the attention of some Psychopomps*. Either way, it sounds like the raven and the jackal are both subjects to some being, whose orders may not be crystal clear".
*Psychopomps are spiritual beings who maintain the flow of souls. They are often in conflict with the Undead

"So it could happen again?", Tina asks rhetorically with a wanful grimace, "well isn't that just great.."

The priestess weighs her head from side to side. "I can't say that it won't, but... I don't know, spirits are a strange lot. But they usually don't attack folks. It does happen, from time to time. There are evil deities and spirits, just as there are bad people"

As you had already assumed, you'll need to be mindful of enemies in the future, being Undead and all. And it seems some beings will be able to know, whether you tell people or not.

About fifteen minutes later, the three of you arrive with your escort at the headquarter of the guards, a type of building you've become more familiar with lately than you ever thought you'd be. Inside its sturdy walls you are politely escorted deeper inside than you've been yet. Only six of the guards guide you along, with the rest of the group staying outside. On the way, you spot the Kitsune woman by her desk. She recognizes you, but seems perplexed as to why you're being escorted.

Things get a tad more omnious when you are led down a spiral staircase to some sort of cellar. It's a bit colder down here, not that you really mind. Walking on the rough, symmetrically adorned, stone floor, you pass by several holding cells with iron bars, though most of them are empty.

"Eerie as it is, it's still a relief to be in the proper shade", Tina quips.

You turn you head to her and smile at her with a corner of your mouth.

The leading guard says "ah, don't worry, you're not getting locked up. It's just that the room you'll be questioned in is down here. I know it may seem a little inhospitable, but it's sufficient, and the General isn't exactly keen on spending tax money to cozy up the place for actual criminals".

(cont.)

Soon after, you find yourself seated in a simple room, not small but not spacious either. Each of you have been given a simple, wooden, stool to sit on, placed in front of a wide table. Once you're all seated, the leading guard speaks up.

"Now you'll have to wait. It may be a while, but please remain in this room, and don't cast any spells or the like. Someone will be here sometime today to question you, but it could be hours, honestly. I'm guessing you won't need any refreshments while you wait?"

You confirm, shaking your head.

"Bliss, then I'll take my leave. Stuff to do", he says casually. "Oh, and if you need anything, there'll be guards in the hallway outside".

Hm. So potentially quite a bit of time while you're waiting here.

(fyi: wont be doing a run tonight, just an update)

actually, Tina here may need some refreshments while we wait, don't mind if I'm sleeping by the time you come back ok?

>Anything you want to do, in what could be several hours here?
I guess she must have spent a lot of her blood reserves during the fight, do some testing with our neg energy and try to feed her some, at least so she can bail in bat form should the need to escape arise, she can try a rescue later if we are held up. I don't believe they will keep us locked in but it's good to have a backup plan.

aside from that, ask them how the battle went for them? how they felt things go and how they think it could have gone better, it was our first time commanding an attack against a stronger opponent so we would like to hear what they think.

in general i agree with >>3102306, i doubt he will let us ask to many questions, but that one wouldn't be out of line i think.
to the blood part, i don't think its necessery to tell them that, just tell tina to wake us when they come to talk.
Otherwise talk to tina and Nar, or if we have some of our books here, read up a little.
>>
>>3102306
Agreed

>>3102259
Ask if Tina felt like she chose a class, we are probably going to deal with that as soon as possible, we need more power if we are dealing with things like that.
Ask Nar (and Sierra when/if she gets back) if they ever fought or know something about spirits and lesser gods like the priestess said.

If our cards have not burned out or if we didn't pass out we can pass the time by playing cards, or just sleep after Tina drinks up.

This^
And hopefully some of our books are still in good enough condition to read. They'll be good time wasters if there's nothing else to glean from them.

Seems that moving locations changes the Poster ID. I really should keep that in mind.

If we have one of our book with us then read it to pass time, also talk to Tina about what happened and something to match what we're going to say in the interrogation (include our zombie).
>>Anything you want to add before he leaves?
Ask for a book or something if we don't have one of ours. Also ask about the one who is gonna interrogate, options if he doesn't know exactly and rank.

And, QM, a question here. Is okey for you how are we answering? I mean, often we answer thinking only so far in time and sometimes you advance the story further than that, so if is better for you that we answer thinking more step further just tell us. I hope I made myself clear.

I'm still hoping that we can eventually build our own little Village of the Macabre.

hey, there is an abandoned castle nearby.....just saying.
But I still want to travel some more before that, and get Tina that damn class already
>>
>>3103580
Totally possible, but you'll probably want at least some intelligent undead there, right? in that case, you'll prolly have some competition on the vote

>>3103573
I have no problem with the votings so far. I enjoy seeing people somewhat invested in the quest.
> often we answer thinking only so far in time and sometimes you advance the story further than that
Yeah I did wonder if i should give players more spotlight.. Idk, in the last update i did, i just didnt find any natural place to prompt for anything. I was like "should i ask them if they wanna follow down into the cellar? nah ofc they would do that, they already said they are being accomodating, and if i ask that they make get suspicious for no reason about it..", and stuff like that.
So vote however you feel like. I obviously like write-ins (even if they often end up making my posts longer), but I dont want people to force themselves to make write-ins, that'd prolly end up kinda 'hollow'. On the other hand, if you feel i should make more prompts, im always open to feedback. Especially if you bring up a specific scene, like "in scene X, when npc Y said that thing, I would have liked to react in some way", or sth. Idk. I hope im making sense.

I though the pace is fine, we write a bunch of stuff in between them and we are slow paced so if we stop at every possible prompt we would not move forward, besides, we have been going in a consistent route with Alice, so sometimes it's easy to know what she would do as a character, like the following the guard to the cellar thing that you mentioned

>I hope im making sense.
I totally understand, ty.
>>
>>3103599
Yeah, that's true. We want to make ourselves a bit more worldly before we try to pull that off.

>>3103684
You're doing fine so far. No major complaints, really. Maybe some grammar and formatting nitpicks, but that's about it.

Don't know how things will advance, but when the interrogator comes let's try to be reserved, we don't interact much with humans (if is one), so say him/her that we had a bad premonition of some kind and we decided to stay in town if something happened, we have business after all, let's not bring up conversations nor the white raven, it may us bring troubles of various kinds (all of this talked with our group).

(status update: So, being on page 10, as one of the very last threads, I won't do more updates ITT. Will be aiming for something tomorrow, hopefully a run rather than just an update. I'm not making any promises tho - if I dont feel inspired, I wont try to halfass it. So yeah.. Hope for the best, expect the worst. Oh, and "tomorrow" means anytime after I wake up in approx 12 hours)
