Hotel Penthouse Suite, Zurich, Switzerland

“It...It tastes so divine! Mmph… like… like the finest lobster or crab fused together with the most exotic of aftertastes!”

Your name is Shaojie Zhang, former Triad enforcer turned XCOM soldier, and you are watching as the information broker before you gorges himself in cooked alien meat. The broker’s loving exclamation of his meal is muffled with said meal stuffed in his mouth. His words muffled and his eating etiquette is nonexistent. It is as if this alien leg was this broker’s last meal.

What you had thought was an extremely large and noxious smelling ‘crab leg’ is instead an illegally acquired and cooked Chrysalid’s leg. You’re not sure 100% sure, given the normally purple shell has been cooked bone white, but you honestly would rather know less.

You had been assigned by your squad leader, Dozer, to gather information in the city’s criminal underground for anything that can help with the EXALT Covert Op you are in. After some searching, you had found yourself… here. Watching this man stuff alien meat ravenously down into his gullet. Stopping only to sip at his glass of wine, drench the meat in melted butter, or to speak.

You feel sick to your stomach.

He continues to chow down, and would likely forget your presence if left alone for too long with his food. You speak up again.
“I want information on Riniker Bank. Any and all information of the establishment that one wouldn’t normally find.”

“Aha!” The broker stops his feasting for a blessed moment to take a long gulp of his wine, emptying the glass and laugh. “You Triads are planning a bank robbery! It’s been months since a good heist in the city!”

You don’t comment. The broker grunts towards Bruno, the guard who has escorted you in, with his empty wine glass. Bruno silently begins to refill his glass of wine with the bottle already on the table. The table is a mess with scraps of meat, bits of shell, and greasy oil and butter in little pools everywhere.

“I will say for free that you picked a decent place to rob. It isn’t any of the major banks that would have near impenetrable security and the police in their pockets. Riniker is… decent enough.” The broker says casually, taking another bite of meat and shuddering in satisfaction at the taste.

“How so?” You say.

“Ah ah!” He waves his fork towards you to shush you. “Is that what you want to ask? I may be in a good mood and willing to lower my rates, but vague questions will only mean I’ll give you vague answers. A singular topic is cheaper overall for multiple questions, but it’s only common courtesy to let you know the price does add up.”

“Noted.”

Bruno walks over to get a military grade laptop on a coffee table in the suite and sets it on the cleanest part of the table by the broker. He doesn’t open it, focusing on eating away.

“Well, Triad? Ask away. I will look up the necessities once I am done eating!” He goes back devouring away at his meal greedily.

Hm.

“I require blueprints of Riniker bank as well as information regarding any noteworthy events that have recently occurred there.” You say.

Two questions, which should come out a decent enough cost. Yet even while the man finishes his ‘exotic’ meal, you mentally prepare yourself for thorough negotiations. This is where the real work begins. A battle where words are exchanged, not gauss and plasma.

Admittedly, you were always a man who preferred to keep conversations brief. That will not help very much here. Hopefully the initial good mood you had helped with the broker will carry you.

The broker cleans out the plate, all but stopping himself from licking the plate clean. He wipes away at his chin with a soggy napkin. From there, he begins to use the last handful of moist towelettes onto the table. Satisfied. The broker opens his laptop, nods to you, and grins.

“Shall we?”

You nod and start talking.

The negotiations are tense and the broker stonewalls your initial conversations immediately, but you are a very patient man. His initial prices were extremely high and it was a process to bring it down to a reasonable amount. Unlike how other transactions of this caliber are handled, it is unfortunately the broker who sets the price. It’s usually reputation and clout that allows these individuals to not get burned.

Thankfully however, you make considerable progress. Very quickly, you manage to wear away at the broker, using your good will to your benefit. It still takes nearly two hours to get the price down to a reasonable rate. But you will not be leaving this penthouse suite with any favors to ask. Your allotted funds will be all but drained, but that was the point of the funds.

“There. Your maps. Most of that is straight from city planning. It is the most up to date from the last couple of months. Still a window for sudden renovations or what have you, but it’ll give your little heist crew an idea of where to dig.” The broker slides you a flash drive across the still somewhat greasy table.

You take it.

“As for recent events…” The broker taps away at his laptop, “Apparently business has picked up considerably in the last few days at the bank. Doesn’t specify what, banks are very particular at keeping that information internal. The timing was odd enough to get the attention of the city financial board, and an investigator was sent to make sure everything was above board.”

You perk up at that. Did EXALT tip their hand by accident? “What did this investigator find?”

“That’s an extra question... but you know what? I’m a bit curious myself. This will be a freebie.” He winks at you, before turning his attention to the keyboard for a moment. “Huh, how disappointing… The investigator found absolutely nothing at all.”

You don’t believe that.

“Her name is Melina Obrecht if you want to ask her yourself. That’s the freebie you’ll get as thanks that’s for helping me eat my once in a lifetime meal.” The broker contentedly rubs his belly and laughs.

You nod and place a stack of Swiss francs onto the table. Bruno takes the cash, counts it, and nods to the broker.

“Well, our business is concluded then, Triad! Have fun robbing the bank, I look forward to seeing it on the news in the coming days. It isn’t an alien attack, but it will be entertaining enough!”

Without speaking any further to the man, you turn and take your leave, Bruno following you out back to your car. You don’t look back as the broker starts to cough and seem queasy. Bruno whistles for another guard at the far end of the hallway to check on the broker, just in case. Neither of you are in any rush to enter that smelly room. Perhaps the man is to meet his maker for trying such an otherworldly ‘delicacy’. It would be karmic.

With that your business is done. You wonder what your brother would have thought if…

You smother the thought, for it will only lead down a dark path.

>And with that, we’ll conclude Zhang’s vignette. From here we will be resolving the other Tasks you guys have assigned! I will need a total of four dice rolled for each of the other team members. two dice for Burnout and Loki casing the Bank and two dice for Anna and Dozer setting up the Safehouse. Bonus to the final roll will be added after the rolls for ease of not having to deal with how finicky 4chan is with adding bonus to dice rolls.

Your nickname is Dozer, Strike-1’s squad leader and currently team leader of Wraith-1, and you’ve worked up a good sweat. It’s taken you the entire rest of the day after arriving at the safehouse moving and setting up all sorts of electronics equipment.

Anna is quite the particular woman of where she wants her things set up. And you’ve spent a lot of the time moving and removing certain electronics this way and that until everything was just right. You didn’t mind as it was a pretty good workout and if Anna’s has a good working environment it’s better for everyone. Plus, Anna’s been quite excited to get to work once everything clicked into place.

Loki and Burnout returned later that evening without any issue, and had cased the bank and surrounding streets successfully. Several places such as a cafe and a nearby park should allow for easy surveillance and initial exploration of the bank interior went off without any suspicion. Solid groundwork for a proper extended stakeout which is something everyone is looking forward to.

Well, it had almost went completely without a hitch. Apparently Burnout had been intercepted by a pair of locals, twins, that were very infatuated with the frenchman. He couldn’t actually get much done and extricate himself out of the situation, which left Loki to do all of the work. Burnout apologized, but you couldn’t help but laugh instead of chiding him.

Andre had finished his task, providing you with contacts that should be ready to help if necessary. He had stressed again that he would only be using up one favor. It doesn’t look like he’s going to budge either. Better than nothing, you suppose.

The only thing you were really worried about was Zhang, but he had returned the next day with a surprising amount of information. The man had made a deal with an information broker, and had gotten blueprints of the bank and even a possible lead, a financial investigator named Melina Obrecht.

The only odd thing was the man had smelled pretty unpleasantly. A mix of spices and something rotten clung to his clothes. Zhang reassured it doesn’t pertain to the mission and politely asked to not recount the specifics. You respect Zhang’s privacy.

With everyone’s first initial tasks completed, it was no time to give out additional orders. Anna had suggested she focus on comms duty and getting herself acquainted with the ‘local signals’, whatever that means. With all of her equipment set up she would be able to assist everyone with their duties, but not be able to fully devote her specialities to a specific task. It would be something only she can do given she’s your comms specialist.

Best to decide now before giving out new orders.

As you and the others eat a late lunch in the Safehouse after Zhang’s return on the next day, you turn to Anna, who is already seated in her control station. It’s an impressive station, with Anna creatively using the numerous computers that were already present in the office and jury rigging them together with the XCOM equipment brought along.

It reminds you of a mix between a security room camera station and something straight out of a few sci-fi flicks. A whole corner of the office is glowing buzz of over a dozen monitors and a clustered web of cables. You would know the station pretty well, after all you set it all up yourself.

“Anna, you’re on Comms.” You say, looking over to her.

Anna, who was currently munching away on some toaster pastries. Gives you a big thumbs up, opting to not speak her affirmation with a mouthful of pastry. She spins around in her office chair and slips on her headphones. You hear her mumble something to herself but can’t quite make out what.

“What’s the rest of your orders, Dozer?” Loki asks with a grumble. You’ve all learned rather quickly, Loki is not a morning person, her hair a frazzled mess.

“We’ll need to start properly keeping an eye out on the bank, noting down staff or civilians that stand out. That’s going to be our main way of gathering intel, I’d guess.” You start after some consideration. “After that, once we have an idea whose suspicious and possibly EXALT we can narrow down the net from there.”

“It must not be forgotten that the bank could be completely affiliated with EXALT.” Andre points out, tapping away at his phone. “We will need to not stand out.”

“Next on priority is seeing if this financial investigator, Obrecht, might be a proper lead. Hopefully we don’t spook her. After that, it’s probably best we get better equipment sooner rather than later. Andre gave us access to the black market or the local police, we could get a cache of weapons there. Failing that, there’s always hunting weapons from civilian stores.” You continue.

“Sounds like a plan. Who's going where?” Loki yawns, rubbing her eyes.

>It is as if this alien leg was this broker’s last meal.
>>
“Right. Zhang, you’re getting us gear. Our current loadout gives us an advantage in close range, but that’s about it. Use Andre’s contacts and some of the teams funds to get us loaded out for a firefight. If there’s trouble acquiring heavier gear, opt for hunting weapons instead. The last thing we need right now is our guns leading a trail right to our safehouse.” You say, starting to divvy out your orders.

“I will look into the black market. I doubt I would receive much reception with the police.” Zhang answers, finishing his rather spartan meal of oatmeal.

“Fair enough.” You nod. “Burnout, you’ll follow through on this Melina Obrecht lead. Anna will direct you where to go. There’s definitely something going on with this investigator.”

Anna gives a thumbs up from her station.

“Very well.” Burnout nods, crushing his finished cigarette on a rapidly filling ashtray. He’s by an open window at the very least so the office doesn’t stink of smoke.

“Try not to spook her, but otherwise you have free reign to get her talking and on our side.” You try your best to not blurt out for Burnout to crank up his innate French charm.

“Loki. Andre. I’ve saved the best for last. The both of you will be joining me on staking out the bank. It’ll be exciting, I know.” Your sarcasm knows no bounds.

“Fantastic.” Loki sighs.

“This is acceptable.” Andre muses.

Orders assigned, the conversation dies down as everyone finishes their meals and heads out. You’re already starting to get flashbacks to grunt field work in the FBI before you were saved and assigned into SWAT…

Solace. Because it's helpful to increase perception, maintain concentration and clear out distracting thoughts. Should be very useful for boring stakeouts where people can easily lose concentration and miss out on stuff if they weren't looking or something. Not to mention the easiest Psi-ability to use and maintain for prolonged periods of time.

Wait, by one point does that mean we only get one point per day/session, or is it one point for this entire mission?

Currently Dozer has one Focus point stored at the moment. It will take him an entire round of just resting to gain another point. Solace would indeed be a huge help in the Stakeout!

Downtown District, Zurich, Switzerland

Your name is Marc Nicollier, but very few people know that name. Most people know your nickname, Burnout. You are an XCOM soldier and… that’s about it really. Recent events in the alien invasion has led you to strip your rights as a French citizen and become stateless. Your fake passport and identity has more legality than you do. You are a nobody who has no country to fight for.

The more you think about it, the more a creeping dread starts to grow and fester in the back of your mind and…

You light up another cigarette with a smooth ease, sucking in the nicotine and the smoke. You relax. Things calm down, and you are fine once again.

Naru had always said in annoyance that you were a man who lived in the moment. From either running an alien’s plasma fire or finding yourself enjoying another ‘death stick’ as Naru had love to coin it. Your lungs are likely not going to be happy about what you’ve done with them in the coming years, but you only care about the moment. You honestly don’t see the problem in worrying.

Currently, you’ve been given orders by Dozer to learn more about this Melina Obrecht. Finding yourself, just outside of the Swiss federal office where Obrecht currently works in. It’s a rather pleasant late afternoon, and if Anna’s information is correct, Obrecht will be taking her leave of the office to return to her home eventually.

It wasn’t particularly difficult to find where Obrecht worked, but her specific home address or work schedule would have taken extra time for Anna to find. You’ve waved her off for now on that, you should be able to handle it from here. Reconnaissance is what you do, after all. A pack of smokes and a light is all you really need to pass the time.

Unfortunately, the pack you bought at the store is now empty. The last cigarette having been placed between your lips. You might get… distracted again if you don’t make sure you have a fresh supply. Nothing completely detrimental, you don’t think, after all you had endured the flight without much issue thanks to some nicotine gum.

Though, even you’re realizing that you have been going through cigarettes faster than before…

Obrecht could leave this office at any time now. Or maybe not. She could be leaving the office in the evening. There was a small shop just a block or two down… it would be a quick detour to purchase another pack…

For me it changes every time I turn my modem's power off and back on again. And I have to do that because my ISP provides an IP only for a couple of days at a time and when that IP's lease time runs out my internet gets cut. I suppose I could just call them when it happens but it's easier to just turn the thing off when I go to sleep and then back on again in the morning.
I don't know how it is for Pixel though, maybe his ISP's system automatically provides him with a new IP when the old one's lease time runs out and that's why his IP changed. Or some other reason that I didn't think of.
>>
>>3118344
>And I have to do that because my ISP provides an IP only for a couple of days at a time and when that IP's lease time runs out my internet gets cut.
That shouldn't be necessary, modems are supposed to renew their IP address before the lease expires. You might want to look at its settings, or if you're not confident in doing that, try a factory reset. If it's old, your ISP might be willing to replace it.

>I don't know how it is for Pixel though, maybe his ISP's system automatically provides him with a new IP when the old one's lease time runs out and that's why his IP changed. Or some other reason that I didn't think of.
He did mention he was having internet trouble a few days ago, and I was too. My IP address got changed, probably by Frontier resetting their DHCP servers. He might have had the same thing happen.
>>
You opt to wait and flag down any passerby for a smoke. It would be a mistake to miss your opportunity for something so selfish. So, settling down on the plaza bench you’ve been sitting on, you wait. You’ll get lucky eventually.

Another half-hour passes as you wait.

Most of your attention is kept on watching the finance building, but your gaze keeps wandering for anyone who happens to be smoking. Your rationing of your remaining cigarette steadily withers away, and of the handful of people walking about none smoke. None catch your eye.

When you are finally forced to stomp out your remaining smoke, it’s not so bad at first. But your mind slowly begins to wander away again. You were never this impatient before. This is incredibly inwardly frustrating. Self control from over the years keeps you from revealing anything, but it is irritating.

You begin to feel restless.

Clearly, it must be your statelessness. What else could it be? You never considered yourself much of a patriot, though your service in the GIGN is something you were always proud of. You’ve risked your life countless times to save many French citizens from terrorists or worse. So is that it then? Is it reality setting in like a weight you never realized was on your shoulders?

You hate this.

Eventually, your luck does come through like always. Your faith in fortune working out once more. You notice a businessman stepping out of an office building to vent away the stresses of his job with a smoke. You waste no time heading over. You walk with a calm purpose and not of a man with an increasing need for smoke filled in his lungs.

The businessman speaks very little English, but understands the universal request for a cigarette. Index and middle finger over lips. There’s a bit of confusion but you present several bills to the man and then he happily obliges. You even manage to get the rest of his pack, with a few more bills.

You place a fresh cigarette between your lips and pull out your lighter and breathe it in. Immediately you feel yourself become fully at ease and focused.

Much better. Fortune has favored your yet again.

You’ve always been rather lucky. When fortune is kind enough to present you an opportunity you always take it. Always. That at least hasn’t failed you yet. There is always the risk it will fail you eventually, but you trust fortune and it in return has trusted you back. It’s a good relationship and your longest one yet.

Your luck was why you chose to be an XCOM Scout. Admittedly most of it was because of your previous skill as reconnaissance and spotter in the GIGN. Someone has to run that alien overwatch, and fortune has given you the best chance.

Naru called you a ‘Filthy Lucksack’ once while drunk. It may not be that far off.

When you head back over to your bench, luck bestows another opportunity your way as Melina Obrecht takes her leave from the office.

(1 / 2)
>>
One glance even from this distance and you can see Melina Obrecht is quite the no nonsense sort. She’s somewhat tall with her black hair pulled back into a neat and well kept bun. Her navy blue suit is not especially flashy but sharp and smart looking. Obrecht is a professional businesswoman through and through. Her demeanor is of one with a clear purpose, whatever it is.

She isn’t unattractive either, with shapely features in all of the right places… You frown and put away that thought.
Contrary to what people have said to you about your ‘luck’ with women, you’ve always wagered otherwise. There are many attractive women in the world, but very few men actually take the opportunity to do anything about it. You do. And that’s all. Lately however, you haven’t had much interest in flirting with women. You can’t fathom why.

In any case, you’ve found your mark, and she is heading towards the nearby parking lot. Has a car and she’s heading home, then. Nestled in your pocket with one of your lighters is a tracking device that Andre had found in the safehouse. You could stick it on Obrecht’s person or in her vehicle.

But perhaps that is too hasty, you could also follow her at a distance and gauge your mark a bit longer. Get a feel of things before commiting. Although, that runs the risk of her just outright leaving the area and you losing your chance for the day.

Finally there’s the obvious option. Just walking up and speaking to her. Not everything has to be resolved with cloak and dagger.

You weigh the options as you flick ash from the tip of your cigarette.

You’re already walking towards Obrecht. You’ll talk to her. Get what information you can from her. Possibly place a tracking device when you see an opportunity. Obrecht is halfway towards the parking lot when you reach her, you clear your throat.

“Melina Obrecht?” You say, catching her attention.

“Ja?” The woman turns to regard you. For a moment she seems approachable as she examines you for a moment.

“Do you mind if I ask you a few questions? I won’t bother you for long.” You start cordially, taking a step closer.

Obrecht doesn’t mind at first. In fact, you can see her immediate attraction to you. However something clicks in her mind, she recalls something. She narrows her eyes, glares at you, and briskly spins around and starts walking away.

"No. I will not be answering any more questions to people like you.” She replies bluntly.

People like yourself?

You are already moving to follow her, not letting the sudden rejection spurn you away. It raises more questions. She was willing initially but something happened. Something suspicious. You are not losing the moment provided to you. You have a hunch, no real evidence to guess who these people are. You take a risk anyways.

“I assure you I am not like those people,” you reply, moving to stop in front of her. “In fact, I am after those very same people and would like your help.”

“That’s… that’s too convenient. I want to believe you, but I am no fool. You are just changing tactics. I refused your bribes prior unlike my superiors and getting rid of me in some dirty fashion would only implicate you to the authorities. An attempt was made, I will not be bullied.”

She keeps walking.

You’ve entered the parking lot now. Your mind juggles the new batch of information she’s given while you betray nothing on the outside. Fortune has gifted a sizable chunk of information your way for trusting her once more. Obrecht has had unfortunate dealings with either a third criminal element or EXALT themselves. With your luck it is the latter.

This group couldn’t buy her out and she is having none of it. They have funds and are willing to grease palms. Obrecht’s position makes her think she has some form of leverage. Knowing how these elements work, she likely doesn’t. It is a classic misunderstanding that civilians have over criminals. Something you learned from hostage rescue. She’s either not a big enough threat yet or they’re already planning on getting rid of her soon.

Obrecht could be very helpful if you could get her to trust you.

You can work with this, but first you must get her to listen.

(1 / 2)
>>
“Melina. May, I call you Melina?” You say, addressing her by first name.

She keeps walking, but you know she’s listening. She perks up when you say her name. You keep following her into the parking lot. She doesn’t say no so you commit to calling her by her first name. You must build trust here.

“Melina,” you say softly. “You have been bullied by this group and they think they can get away it. That is a grave a mistake on their part because I can see it’s affected you. You don’t deserve to be pushed around like that.”

Melina lets out a frustrated sigh, stopping.
“Kind words, but they are just words. Prove it.”

You have the woman’s attention, but only for a short window of time. You must gauge her correctly. She must know how in over her head she is that a stranger can read her like a book. You can say it in a way not to spook her… you just need to actually be correct.

She’s either cocky, naive, or afraid. You need to be direct with her as sweet talking is not going to make her listen. Her stopping means she wants answers. Her listening means there’s another chance to try your luck. So you press.

>She’s cocky. She can’t deal with her enemy alone.
>She’s naive. She has no idea what she’s stepped into.
>She’s afraid. Assure her you are a friend who wishes to help.

She isn't afraid. She's kind of both naive and cocky as the former leads into the latter you know?

“You are confident, too confident. This confidence is admirable in a way, but you have no chance of trying to deal with this enemy alone,” you say.

Cocky is a more appropriate word, but you are trying to endear yourself to her here. She’s not afraid, you assume.

“I… I have no idea what you mean.” She looks away at that, hastily brushing a stray lock of hair aside. There’s a nervousness there. You seem to have hit the mark.

“You are treading very dangerous waters here. These are not people you can just trifle with without repercussions. They will be more than willing to plug up a loose end without a second thought long before the ‘authorities’ can do anything about it.” Your keep things concise and to the point, and it works.

“I can handle myself!” She counters back hastily, but each word you say seems to be digging deeper.

“I am sure you are an extremely capable investigator, to turn them down like you have. But this is a much bigger… conspiracy.”

You place a hand on her shoulder, initiating physical contact. She doesn’t recoil back from your gentle touch. It took you a moment to settle on the right word for it, so you threw conspiracy out there to see what would happen.

“Yes… yes it’s all a conspiracy.” Melina nods, latching onto the word like a life preserver out at sea. “We’re both talking about the same thing, yes?”

“Riniker Bank.”

“Of course. Exactly.” Melina nods again, and you see a relief in her face at confirmation that she’s not the only one who is seeing the ‘truth’. “You have no idea what this means, I thought I was-”

“I’m here and I wish to help.” You murmur, placing both hands on her shoulders, looking at her eye to eye. A gentle and yet firm grip, reassurance she is not alone. Not crazy. You sense a familiar spark of-

“I get it. You don’t have to go out of your way, to make a point.” Melina replies, breathing a bit more quickly when you move closer. She places a hand on your chest and pushes you back a bit. “W-we need to be professionals here.”

“Indeed.” You say, raising an eyebrow for a moment. You may have been trying too hard without realizing. Whoops. You have a bad habit of that.

“Alright, I may regret this but, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.” Melina takes a moment to compose herself, smoothing out small folds on her blouse. “You know me, but I need to know you here. Who are you and who do you work for?”

I know XCOM is secretive and all, but this is best option to get as much info from her as possible. Plus if we can build trust with her maybe we can make her promise not to spread the news? Even if she does, eventually public would find out about XCOM anyway.

Plus, like Dozer said, people knowing about XCOM has a lot of positive effects, like raising morale.

“I work for an international paramilitary organization that is fighting the alien invaders known as XCOM. My nickname is Burnout as my full name needs to be kept secret.” You explain simply, apologetic of the last part.

Your reasoning is simple really, she’s already a target for EXALT, which you are believing to be after her instead of other criminals. It really would be for her own safety to not mince words here and be direct.

She stares at you, confused.

“I-- what? What would an alien fighting force even care about possible banking fraud and laundering? You certainly have the bearing of a soldier but...” Melina is at a loss.

“This organization that’s after you has sabotaged our own, hindering our efforts at fighting the aliens. There’s even the possibility they might be alien sympathizers.” You don’t know this of course, but it feels like a well educated guess. “XCOM has assigned a small team to investigate them, I am part of that team.”

“Funny, I had just left from a meeting over how these aliens might ruin the economy…” Melina shakes her head. “I’m surprised you’re being so willing to tell the truth, if it even is true that is.”

“There’s no point keeping you in the dark.”

She regards you for a moment while taking it all in. She can’t register anything besides your calm demeanor. You hope that’s helped in keeping her at ease. You’ve always been aware of the dangers of your occupation, but you’ve never let it get into your skin most of the time. There’s a glance at your face and then to your lips.

“May I?”

She may. You offer a smoke and step close to her again to light it. With the heels she’s wearing, she’s just ever so slightly shorter than you. You can smell her perfume, it’s a pleasant scent. Her breathing picks up again until you step away. She lets out a quick puff. Her lipstick leaving a light pink mark on the cigarette.

“...If you are telling the truth, which I think you are, thank you Burnout. If you can help me get these men from harassing me, I’ll keep my knowledge of XCOM quiet.” Melina promises. “I take it your team was scoping me out prior before you approached?”

“What do you mean?” You are alert now.

“I think I’ve been followed around since yesterday by a grey car with tinted windows. That’s your team, correct?”

“No. I’m the first.”

“Oh.”

(1 / 2)
>>
Of course they’d be keeping tabs on her. Why wouldn’t they be? She doesn’t seem to be too concerned, confident since they haven’t actually tried anything yet. But she should be.

“Tell me everything about this grey car.” You say, with the urgency of a man without. They could be watching you right now.

“They usually wait for my car to leave the parking lot and follow me until I leave for the highway, the vehicle usually peels away. I’ve also memorized the license plates. I thought I was just overthinking things and it was just another person going home from work.”

“So they would have seen me speaking to you once you left your office.”

“Maybe.”

You might have a chance to get a direct lead back to EXALT. But you have to be very careful here. For all you know you could’ve been spotted but not identified as a threat.

“I have a plan.” You say after some short consideration, the both of you taking the opportunity to finish your smokes.

“And that is?”

“I am going to head back to my vehicle and attempt to tail this grey car. Give me five minutes to get ready and then I want you to take your usual route home for most of the way. Once the grey car is diverted head to this address. It is a cafe close to our Safehouse. I’ll pick you up or have someone come to you from there. It’s best you don’t return home just yet.” You explain, reaching into your alloy jacket pocket and producing a spare tracker while you rattle off the address. “Take this as well. Activate this if anything happens to you. This is a tracking device.”

“...I see. Just start driving home then after a while go to this cafe.” Melina nods slowly, taking the device in hand. The high-tech piece of equipment held is enough to get her to start realizing the predicament she’s in.

“Correct.” You nod, as you prepare yourself for some nimble movement.

“Wait, were you planning on putting this tracker on me?” Melina has a look of realization as she examines the device.

“Yes, but I am telling you now. A much better outcome. Now, tell me what the license plate is and I will head out.”

She does. Melina is taking your initial plan of bugging her rather well. With that you flick your spent cigarette aside and light another one, turning to leave.

“...Good luck Burnout.” Melina says behind you.

You give her a small wave but keep walking. You’re feeling pretty lucky at the moment.

Keeping your head down but still on a swivel, you manage to spot the grey car and confirm it’s plates. It’s parked beside a sidewalk, the model completely mundane and nondescript. It’s tinted windows give you no opportunity to peer inside. The only person who would have a chance to see through that tinted glass would probably be Naru, but she isn’t here.

There’s likely someone waiting in the driver’s seat. Possibly more passengers as well.

Now's ’the challenge of both making your way to your own vehicle and then following them without arousing suspicion. For once you’re avoiding attention instead of being a distraction. It’s a bit amusing. You let out another puff of smoke into the crisp Swiss air, letting it mingle lazily in front of you.

You wonder, how lucky are you this time around?

It’s only a quick roundabout walk from the parking lot to your car, making sure you keep a wide berth of your new target. You keep the vehicle at the corner of your eye, but nothing seems to change with the vehicle. Entering your own car, you start the engines and leave it on idle.

The rest of the five minutes pass and Melina pulls out out from the parking lot. Her vehicle is rather easy to spot out, a three-ish year old baby blue sedan, so tracking her is extremely easy. Melina may have a competent investigative head on her shoulders but subtlety is not exactly in her MO. As she passes you by the main street, the grey car immediately starts up and begins to follow after Melina.

You tail right behind.

The three car convoy navigates its way through the winding and tight city streets. With the aliens discouraging open travel, there are several points when you are forced stop just behind the grey car. Melina’s own sedan being just up ahead.

Given you are the only person driving, it’s a luxury to be able to smoke in the car and have nobody complain. The slow but steady unawares convoy continues through downtown until a certain point, where the grey car takes a left while Melina’s continues forward. You follow after your target.

So far so good.

If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to distance yourself from the grey car so as to not attract any more attention from this extended drive.

This doesn’t happen. As a two lane road is merged into a single lane, the truck on your side decides that he wants to overtake both you and the grey car. There’s a sudden swerve as he cuts the both you and your target, forcing the grey car to suddenly have to slam on the breaks. There’s a sudden thump as you rear end the grey car. The airbags don’t go off, and the impact wasn’t too bad, but… well…

You wince. This is not good. Has lucked failed you now?

In frustration, grey car honks long and angrily at the speeding away truck, leaving the scene of the accident. The driver window rolls down and a woman leans out. She begins to shout obscenities in French.

No, luck hasn’t failed you at all. It’s rewarded you yet again.

The smartest play here would be to get out of the situation as soon as possible, but an idea comes to mind. Committing to the opportunity before you, you step out and quickly approach the woman in concern.

“Are you alright, miss?” You ask her, stopping by the driver side door.

She turns to look at you, and for a moment you expect to see a look of recognition when she regards you with deep blue eyes. She doesn’t. Looking at her closely, she’s a rather attractive brunette. You also realize she’s no gentle individual, but instead a fit and muscular woman.

She has the bearing of a soldier. She’s indeed the person who you’re looking for.

(1 / 3)
>>
“Yes I am… but that imbecile needs to get his fucking head checked with driving like that!” She curses.

“Oui. He does indeed. What a truly awful display of driving.” You shake your head, not overtly jumping straight to French but making your accent no.

“Mhm… wait….” The woman blinks and looks at you more closely, gears turning in her head quickly. “Are you French??”

She speaks the last part in French. You don’t miss a beat, jumping straight into French yourself.

That’s correct. What a lucky coincidence.

It is! What is a fellow Frenchman like you doing here in Switzerland?

I could ask you the very same thing, Madam.

She laughs, the frustration of the accident being replaced with amusement by the seemingly random but serendipitous event of your meeting. You allow yourself to betray a small smile, a smirk really. In the middle of this one lane road caught in the middle of a hit and run fender bender you start to hit it off with this woman.

You quickly learn her name, Pauline. Likely a cover name. You give her your own fake cover name in return, Pierre. Both of you find it amusing that both names start with P.

One thing leads to another and you soon find yourself having an engaging one-sided conversation with Pauline on a rooftop cafe in a commercial section of the city. Pauline had insisted the coffee and snacks here were excellent. You took her up on the offer, as it was the least you could do after both of you were subject to such an unpleasant accident. The bumping of both cars have quickly been forgotten.

The locale is fairly nice, actually. It’s a one-story building where the rooftop has a little patio barista bar and tables. The open air aesthetic is a fantastic place to read a book which is easily bought below as the interior of the building houses bookstore. A perfect combination. Pauline insisted on taking you here.

After all, she’s completely smitten over you.

You barely have to do any talking as Pauline is very eager to talk about herself. Wanting to impress you. At a certain point she had loosened her button up shirt ever so slightly after a ‘side comment’ on the humidity. It was obviously to show off some skin and cleavage. When you speak, she hangs off every word, listening with great interest. She bites her lip and plays with her hair, fidgeting as much as you smoke.

She’s antsy. She’s eager. She can’t stop staring. She wants you. All you have to do is say the word.

But you don’t.

You restrain yourself. It’s not that she isn’t very attractive, she is, and if this was a few weeks ago you wouldn’t have hesitated but… but...

You just don’t want too. That desire to charm this woman into your arms is not there. You are wondering what changed as she talks about her family. Have you lost interest in women completely? No. Your appreciation of the beauty of the female body is as strong as ever.

Perhaps your heart is elsewhere instead? But where?

You’re honestly trying to be interested with Pauline, after all, this would be the perfect opportunity to woo the enemy over for your benefit. Yet you just don’t have it in you. You feel like you could say literally anything to Pauline and she’d agree wholeheartedly, but your replies are half-assed.

She’s starting to pick up on it now, and her desire has turned to worry and a growing panic you can see with slight body language, She feels like you are slipping away from her grasp, and she’s trying desperately to hold onto you before it’s too late.

You could use this.

You interrupt Pauline, giving her an apologetic look. You set your coffee down and start to stand.

This conversation is extremely interesting, Pauline, but I must get ready to go. I apologize but I have business that I must attend too. I shall pay for our drinks as compensation and-”

“Wait! Don’t go, Pierre!” Pauline nearly stands up and almost knocks over the napkin holder on the table. “I have something I need to tell you!”

“What is it? I really need to go.” You say, sounding torn, you glance at the stairs. You can practically feel Pauline skip a heartbeat when you do so.

“I… I… Pauline looks around, particularly at the barista nearby. When he looks away she leans in. “...Don’t tell anyone but I am a spy, Pierre.”

Well then.

“A spy? Like one of those femme fatales in movies?” You muse, not fully buying it, but listening.

“It’s not as glamorous as that, but I am not lying! I am part of a very important organization, one with major connections across the globe y-you see. Pauline isn’t even my actual name!” Pauline blurts out, desperate for more validation from you.

...Is this really happening?

“And what is this organization called then?” You challenge her, looking directly in the eyes.

She’s conflicted, glancing away nervously at your steely gaze. She looks over at the barista again fearfully before deciding to fully commit. Whatever risk she’s putting herself in is completely overridden by her overwhelming desire to get into your pants. She takes a breath and lowers her voice to a whisper.

“EXALT.”

...

Fortune truly is a kind and loving mistress.

Going to call Burnout's vignette here! Took a while to get a perfect scenario cooked up for that 100 and eventually decided on this. Burnout's too much of an attractive French lady killer that he's skipped a few steps of the investigation outright!

Going to handle the resolution stuff later, as trying to work on figuring out this update was a challenge.

Also it seems the last post I've screwed up my formatting. There was lots of italics being thrown around, whoops! Really fucking wished there was a way to edit posts on 4chan god dammit!

I know the bank job is important and all, but we have the potential for a deep cover burnout here. I know we would miss our Frenchmen on missions, but we could use this to have a man on the inside very early. At least as long as pixel lets us go down that route.

Though given Exalts later tendency for cheap and dirty modding maybe that isn't the greatest Idea...

Naru is Burnout's true love, even if he doesn't fully realize it yet.

I'm sure we could loan a Scout from another Strike team who'd rather go on a mission than sit around in the barracks.

Alright, let's continue where we left off! We're going to be rolling all of the dice you guys assigned for resolution now. We'll be going in order and I'm going to need five total dice rolled!

Order of which dice is which is what is from top to bottom, so first dice will be Zhang, the last dice will be Dozer's Psionics. Additional bonuses will be added after the rolls!

If you guys have an idea on how to format this more efficiently, I'm open to ideas!

XCOM Safehouse, Zurich, Switzerland

Rachel was right, you really are a pretty shit spy. The first day of the stakeout of Riniker Bank was really just getting a headcount, taking note of people who seem suspicious. Just spend the entire day laying low and building up a rogues gallery of folks coming and going from the bank. You were goddamn bored out of your mind after a few hours you barely were able to take good notes.

You thought you were a patient man, but that doesn’t actually seem to be the case. Good job, Dozer.

Thankfully, Andre and Loki were more than able to pick up on your slack, getting a thorough compilation of most of the staff and the customers for that day. A solid start, but it’s going to be a gradual process. You’re going to need at least a few days to identify possible EXALT members and if the bank is actually a front for the organization.

Returning back to the safehouse that late evening, Zhang had already laid out a solid small armory’s worth of weapons. The Gunner was able to make contact with the local black market and acquire military grade weapons for everyone. They don’t compare to XCOM’s original ballistic weapons, but they’re only a step below. Most importantly, Zhang had made sure each weapon was unmarked.

You have no plans having a shootout with civilians if you can get away with it, you’d rather have a clean sweep of EXALT’s base of operations, wherever it is. Just like the good old days in the FBI.

What surprises you however is that Anna had brought home a woman from a nearby cafe and Burnout had returned with some big news. The woman, Melina Obrecht, had been decided by Burnout to bring into the fold for her own safety while Burnout tailed possible EXALT members who had been following her. Anna was informed and she picked Melina up. Burnout still isn’t back yet.

Zhang was pretty surprised about the new random person, apparently.

Melina has been currently speaking with Anna most of the time, and the pair seem to have hit off rather well. Anna explained Melina needed some time to come to terms with everything and she’ll help ‘keep her spirits’ up.

You are currently in the storage room examining the weapons with Zhang. Andre had went to the main office to ‘check in’ with the Council. Anna’s still chatting with Melina. And Loki’s sorting out the findings from the bank today.

“...Did you tell Burnout to bring her in?” Zhang aks you, regarding Melina as he examines the RPK on the table before him.

“No.” You shake your head. “This is a bit of a surprise, but I’m sure Burnout has his reasons. I’ll talk to him whenever he gets back.”

You don’t know when he’ll be back though. Burnout sent a message to Anna that he’ll be ‘busy’ for a bit and can’t respond. Just have to wait.

What do you do to kill some time?

Don't be That Guy who, after a good roll, suddenly decides that he didn't spend his buff after all. As a ex-DM I didn't like those people.
>>
You leave Zhang to do inventory on the weapons he acquired and enter back onto the main part of the office. You pass by Anna and Melina, the pair of women are by Anna’s command station. Melina had rolled over an office chair to join her. You catch a few tidbits of the conversation as you pass by.

“...Your superior, he’s truly that competent?”

“Yes! He is by far the best boss you could want. He runs an extremely smooth ship and gets a lot of work done.”

“I’m envious. I’m fairly sure my bosses are all corrupt, yet I cannot prove they are without ruining my own career in the process. They are not… what’s was that saying you keep repeating?”

“By the numbers!”

You don’t comment and continue onwards towards the other side of the office. Loki’s by the office printers working which are constantly buzzing and printing away images and documents. Her burner phone has been hooked up to one of the few computers that Anna had not gutted for her comms setup.

Loki has commandeered one of the dusty cork boards in the office and has started to turn it into a full on conspiracy wall. It’s got the photographs, clippings from web pages, and even the colorful red string to connect possible clues to one another. Loki’s attention is completely on attaching some small device onto the corkboard.

“That’s pretty old school.” You say, announcing your presence to Loki.

“What can I say? I’m more of a hands on individual who has an interest in the classics.” Loki looks back and smirks. “It’s also a bit of a guilty pleasure, always wanted to make one of these.”

“It’s not bad, it’s just missing more string and erratic scribblings on sticky notes and you’ll get it just right.”

“Sounds like you’ve had experience.”

“There were a few intel guys in the FBI who swore by the method, practically shunned office programs on the computer. Completely analogue.”

“I wouldn’t go that far, but I can understand the appeal.” Loki muses, she turns to face you, finishing whatever thing she’s attached onto the clue board.

“What’s that anyways?” You point to the device.

“Ink bomb. Last resort if we need to bug out and get rid of evidence. Pilfered all of the spare ink cartridges in storage.” Loki is quite proud of it. You nod in approval. “You know, I really must thank you for letting me tag along in this operation.”

“Why’s that?”

“It’s just so nice to be out of the base, of course! And at such an idyllic locale too. If I close my eyes, I can almost just imagine we’re on leave. It isn’t the beach, but I’ll take it.” Loki does so, letting out a contented sigh.

“Well it’s good to know you’re enjoying the op as I’m honestly a bit overwhelmed right now. You saw how I was while we were watching the bank earlier, I haven’t taken to the operation as quickly as the others.” You sigh and shake your head.

“You are doing just fine, Dozer.” Loki says. “None of us are spies either, and we’re making do just fine so far.”

“So far. I dunno, I just feel like a rhino in a china room…” You shrug.

Loki then starts to giggle, promptly bursting into laughter. She’s barely able to cover her mouth from suppressing a full on guffaw

“A… a what, Dozer? A rhino in a what?” Loki snickers.

“Shit. Er, I mean-- you know what I’m trying to say here!” You groan.

“Sorry sorry! Worst time to have a giggle, I know.” Loki calms down, taking breaths. “Dozer, you are handling things here rather well. You know who to send to where and do not coddle us. Means a lot. That, and I and the others trust you far more than that snake, Andre.”

“Try not to say that to his face, please.”

“I have no intention, rest assured. Normally I keep my opinions to myself, but… well, it’s nice being able to open up with you. I feel… at ease.” Loki smiles that smile of hers, but it seems more genuine.

“Happy to hear that. Also, you’re not the only one who’d love to go to a beach, that sounds amazing right now.”

“Right?” Loki perks up at that. “Being cooped up so deep underground for so long has made me crave the sun and the sea. Maybe you could convince the Commander to give us some proper leave, hm? Hijack a few more UFOs mid air, please.”

“Aha, don’t know if I can convince her of that, but maybe I’ll try.”

“Oh, one moment. Spotted an exposed wire.”

Conversation lulls for a bit as Loki pauses to adjust something with the inkbomb on her corkboard. Looking closely, you see her stick her tongue out ever so slightly as she focuses on adjusting the little explosive. Some thought clicks into your mind that you think you’ve seen her do that more than once during the battle. A subconscious tic?

Coming from her, you can’t help but deny it’s… not a bad sight. Your mind begins to picture other things with her as your mind continues on the same track… the thought of the beach lingers in your mind.

“You know, I can’t stop thinking about us at the beach now.” Loki randomly comments, her attention still focused on the ink bomb. You can't tell if she said it that way intentional or not.

Her words stick out to you.

Let's just combine the two. There's some flirting for people that want to pursue the romance route, and setup for a potential beach episode. Besides, it isn't like this is a route lock. I'm sure Pixel will find good situations to narrow it down more later.
>>
>>3127242
I can agree with this.
>>
>>3127242
The issue is, if he keeps trying to pare down love interests, it's not working because samefags vote to keep everyone a possibility.
>>
>>3127290
Yeah, if every girl makes it past the first round, that makes the first round pretty useless, because the point was to narrow it down. We'll have to see how things turn out.
>>
>>3127315
Honestly it was probably a mistake for Pixel to showcase the tournament system instead of keeping it behind the curtain.

Now every one of these choices will have this desperation aspect to them.

Also I did not expect this much turn out for Loki. I thought it was like me and 2 others that liked her, everyone else seemed very indifferent or disliked her.

Alright, I've woken up and noted things have only gotten more complicated overnight than easier. I've realized this requires a bit of adjusting on the rules of the tournament system.

Given that there really is no easy way of determining samefagging, prompts being something that appears to have skewed things, and the current discussion, I'm considering just not counting single post UIDs anymore for the possible romance vote. I'll only count voters who have actively participated all thread up until that moment.

That of course has it's own foibles, as there's clearly no easy solution (just like love). The biggest problem with this adjustment would be that it'll be shafting all of the lurkers who are enjoying the story but only vote when it really matters to them, like this. I don't blame you guys and don't mind lurkers as I always was a lurker for most quests unless I posted fanart as my contribution. So sorry ahead of time we go through with it, lurkers.

The other problem would be that those who may be inclined to samefag will just samefag all prompts throughout the thread until it happens.

It's not exactly the cleanest solution but something I am considering to make this vote more fairer. If that's even possible with a quest, hah.

More importantly for right now to keep things moving along I'm going to void this romance vote and just combine the two votes. This way we can keep moving the quest along while I consider what to do. I am not a perfect QM so I'm open to suggestions on how to keep this civil and fair, if that's even possible.

So, to finalize all of that, writing!
>>
>>3127576
One tip I'd give is give a hard time for votes called and not leaving these votes going on overnight. Even if you fall asleep you can consider the votes after a certain time void.

Otherwise...I dunno, roll with the punches. Too late to do it now, but I would have kept the tournament style, make or break votes behind the curtain and just tally things as Dozer interacts with the girls.
>>
>>3127576
The only problem with tournament style is that if everyone manages to pass a round, it is as if the round never happened in terms of narrowing down the options. Otherwise the idea is good in making it fair for everyone with no railroading.
>>
>>3127633
I didn't think Loki or Harita were going to make it past the first round and it was always going to between Commander, Rachel, and Peppermint, but this vote surprised me.
>>
>>3127639

The beach… you could count the times you have ever went to any beach on just one hand. You grew up in the Arizona after all. Sure there were lakes you’ve visited and the like growing up, but never by the sea. Of course with going to the beach there’s other positives. A thought comes to mind, and you commit to it.

“You know, I wouldn’t mind seeing you in a bikini.” You say as nonchalantly as you can.

It takes a few moments for it to stick. Loki’s initial focus was elsewhere. When it does hit her, she’s caught off guard. It’s like you kicked her door in and breached it without warning. It really isn’t a image in your mind.

“I-I’m sure you would… you hound.” Loki huffs, her cheeks flushing a bit as she rolls her eyes.

You can’t help but laugh. “I’m just being honest. Bit surprised you’ve been thrown off so easily from a bit of teasing, really. Where’s that coy slyness?”

“You just used social skullduggery, I was caught unawares.” Loki grumbles. “I normally expect a comment like that coming from you. You’re better than that.”

“Good to know I have an advantage in a conversation with you this time around.” You smirk.

“I won’t be defeated so easily.” Loki crosses her arms.

“Uh huh. How about when we get to the beach you put your money where your mouth is and prove it in a game of beach volleyball then?”

“I’ll have you know I am excellent at volleyball. I was stationed in the Mediterranean in Cyprus before XCOM, I have spent my time at the beach. I would decimate you volleyball.”

“Challenge accepted, I’d like to see you try.” You grin competitively at her. She doesn’t back down. It sounds fun. “Anyways, it would be nice if the squad got some leave at a beach. Strike-1 has all worked hard enough that everyone deserves a break. So maybe someday.”

“Someday indeed...”

“Besides making you blush and stammer, my real intention for coming over was to review the intel gathered at the bank. Hard to believe, I know.” You reassure her.

“Mm… well, take a look. It’s only a basic groundwork and than anything. It’s only one day, but I’ve ranked a few individuals who stood out. If they keep visiting the bank or we spot them in disguise, that should narrow it down. I put staff on one side, as we’ll obviously be seeing them often.” Loki steps aside and motions to her handiwork

You take a closer look at the the board. Numerous careful snapshots from burner phones of initial persons of interest, all arranged with basic information and linked together. It’s not complete yet, as you can hear the constant noise of the printer nearby, but there’s enough to go by. Two people so far have been singled out by Loki on this first day; the bank manager and a particular businessman.

(1 / 3)
>>
“The bank manager was a rather obvious choice as a potential suspect, we would need more time to determine if the bank is completely in on it or if it’s only a few individuals who were bought out to do EXALT’s money handling. The manager is the best place to start.” Loki says.

“We’ll need to get behind the front and gather further information. Either by using our provided cover as a startup business or just sneaking into the back offices and digging around. We have the blueprints thanks to Zhang , we’d just have to avoid cameras and security.” You tap your chin in thought.

“Anna could perhaps help with the camera part, no?” Loki glances over to Anna and Melina.

“Would have to double check with her, but I think she can do it with a bit of legwork from out part. Nothing we’re going to commit to yet, it’s basically just day one so far. What about this business man you picked out? What made him stand out to you?”

“He has clear influence in the bank. Which I will concede Andre spotted him first.” Loki frowns at mentioning the Council agent’s name. “He was given full attention from the bank staff and went out of their way to make his wait comfortable before he conducted business in a meeting room. Didn’t linger after he finished. If he visits again we should consider placing a tracker on the man.”

You nod, taking it all in. “This is good work so far. The conspiracy board wasn’t a bad idea, Loki.”

“Thank you. We might need more than more cork boards depending how our investigation goes.”

“Well shit, we better buy way more ink cartridges then.”

Loki chuckles and agrees.

Another half an hour passes as you and Loki run through other possible suspects, nobody is considered crossed out, but priorities are shifted lower for the more civilian looking customers or low ranking staff like the bank tellers. You’ll give it a week of watching, maybe a week and a half, and if a few people stand out or keep showing up, you’ll put them on high priority. Not much else you can do, really.

If only you could have some sort of confirmation of EXALT is still actually in the city, that would seriously help…

When Burnout returned and he explained who he had met… you really wish you could’ve seen your own face. You thought it was a complete joke at first. Burnout not only did confirm the person who was tailing Melina was EXALT but he actually had a coffee with them? Absolutely absurd. But through sheer luck, Burnout wasn’t lying.

It even got Andre to stop playing that phone game of his when he heard.

‘Pauline Dubost’ admitted to being an EXALT agent, Burnout had explained. He left how he had convinced her somewhat vague, barring a fortunate car accident of all things. You guess it was because they were both French? In any case, this Pauline is interested in spending more time with Burnout again, which could be useful in getting more information directly at the source.

(2 / 3)

Once Burnout had finished recalling his findings, the conversation was open to the others.

“Well, we can just stop investigating the bank and focus on Pauline, right? We have a perfect lead now. Burnout would need to do it, obviously, but we can get more people to watch and observe. Suggest things to ask and all that.” Anna says, tugging at that long cowlick of hers.

“We should definitely focus on this agent, but I don’t think we should discount the bank at all.” Andre shakes his head. “Finding EXALT is important, but reacquiring our stolen funds is something the Council is interested in. I am sure XCOM would like their money back as well.”

“That will take a lot of time to investigate the bank, EXALT could leave at any day now. For all we know they could be wrapping up their activities here.” Zhang frowns.

“I could help with that.” Melina speaks up, interested and clearly interested in helping. “To keep things simple, my investigations had noted a lot of money being transferred into the bank in numerous separate accounts and checks. By itself, that wouldn’t be a problem, but the frequency and amount of money that was being put into what was a mid-tier bank was… concerning. I was barred from digging further by my superiors and that was around the same time they had approached me with bribes…”

“Do you still have all of that information?” Loki asks.

“Yes and no. I have access to the information in my workplace, but it’s been filed away into the system. My superiors might notice I’m digging again.”

“Oh! I could help with that if it’s all logged into computers. I should be able to keep you incognito.” Anna says quickly. “Though that would take my attention elsewhere.”

“Yes it’s all saved onto our computer network and that would indeed be useful.” Melina nods. “I could also help with ‘staking’ out the bank if need be. I would know what to look for if anything money related seems odd.”

“Someone should look after, Melina. Either way” Burnout says simply.

“I can handle myself.” Melina counters.

“Yes, but… it is better safe than sorry.” Burnout stresses this out ever so slightly. You take note of it.

“What shall we do, Dozer? Lots of choices and avenues now.” Andre turns to you.

He’s not wrong.

>Melina Obrecht has now joined Wraith-1 as a civilian asset! Melina can only really help with investigative orders and has zero combat experience. Before we start fully giving out orders...

>Assign Anna on Comms Duty? She will be able to find out the TN numbers for the next set of tasks but cannot be assigned until the next round of orders.

>Yes
>No

I think we'll need her expertise coming up. We'll just have to use our good judgement when deducing risks for however much that's worth.
>>

>>
>>3128050
>>No
Anna's help with Melina for the computer stuff should be very useful. Other than this one time though I hope we don't have to keep Anna off the comms, since knowing the TN helps us assign the number of people needed for a task. Because apparently each person basically provide one roll for that task when we're not in control of that perspective, thus harder tasks should get more people when needed.

We need that information from Melina's work.

I wouldn't be surprised that if nobody wins in the end, Dozer will be locked onto Anna's route or Bradford's sweater.
>>
>>3128384
Everyone will be totally blindsided by this, including us. The sheer confusion it will sow within everyone sends a psionic wave that will baffle the elders and cause them to psi-blast themselves into giblets. That's how we win the war.
>>
>>3128050
>>No
>>
>>3127576
As someone who has been turned off many a quest by waifu wars it might just be better to say no romance for the moment. Now this doesn't mean that we can't have some spicy interactions occasionally, but just keep it as a side thing for now. If Xcom eventually does fall and we get into xcom 2 territory with a timeskip maybe then we could have a vote that way we can avoid the same grating aspects of mid to late waifu wars as the relationship would've already developed past most of the points that cause these sort of issues.
Just a suggestion, but I feel it might have better results than the salt fests that would occur if a girl is picked by an overwhelming majority because others couldn't be there for the thread because of this that and the other reason.
>>
>>3128050
>No
Need her helping Melina.

>>3128384
>or Bradford's sweater.
I don't particularly like NTR but I would support this.
>>
>>3128669
Its mostly one guy throwing around false exaggerations and being spiteful. Still, I agree with you. And if Pixel would be willing to continue into Xcom 2 territory after a break, that would be very nice.
>>
>>3128973
Does it involve Dozer waking up in a hospital after spending years in a coma, and learning to regain his psi powers while a David Bowie song plays in the background?
>>
>>3128973
Wait wait wait guys, I still haven't played Xcom 2! You'll spoil everything!
>>
>>3128983
Well, we both want that.
>>
>>3128050
>No

>>3128669
It's not a problem if people don't take things too seriously and burn down the threads because their waifu didn't get chosen. This is just a collaborative quest on the internet, not a life-or-death scenario. But, i doubt majority of people reading this quest are like that. There were bunch of anons few threads ago who were being reasonable with the whole waifu war, being fine with any outcome.
>>
>>3127013
>>3127038
>>3127346
well thats just the nature of quests. every quest MC doesnt have a brain, they have a whole crowd of tiny voices that whisper and scream and vote for what they want. its inevitable that things like waifu wars happen. barring some sort of development in story that swings everyones preference to one girl in particular then everyone will go for everyone and things end up inconclusive, since all girls start off equal.

quest MCs are like Congress personified
>>
>>3128050
>>Yes

>>3129192
Oh god, now i can't stop imagining Dozer having schizophrenia with voices of anons in his head telling him what to do.

>>
I know that we haven't finished with the vote just yet, but here is my suggested plan for the next vote.
Burnout pursues the EXALT lead with Zhang
Loki and Andre continue the bank stakeout
Dozer backs up Melina and Anna as they get her info.
>>
Calling the vote here!
>>
>>3129655
What Burnout is doing now (building trust with Pauline) can best be done alone.
>>
>>3130788
It would be best for him to
A. Have backup in case things go bad
and
B. Have someone who can keep track of him in case he gets stuck in a situation where he can't contact us
Plus Zhang doesn't fit any of the other jobs immediately available to us as he is too conspicuous for watching the bank and going in with us to Melina's workplace whereas with burnout he only has too keep track of them.
>>
>>3130807
Ok, but keep him out of Pauline's sight.

Heya guys, hope all of your holidays went well. Couldn't get a chance to update due to Christmas shenanigans and losing my entire weekend playing a fuckload of Foxhole till I dropped dead of exhaustion. Would recommend if you want a comprehensive 'war' experience. I.e. driving trucks and dying a lot.

Back on quest related topics we'll be continuing like usual when I get the next post up sometime tomorrow, I may also have a now belated Christmas themed art piece that I might get into an acceptable level to post possibly!

Obviously calling the vote here!

Seems like my motivation is still pretty rough and after staring at the bottom of my doc page of the thread off and on for the last few days, I think I've hit burnout. And I'm not talking about Burnout.

I'm gonna take a week or possibly 2 to off of running to recharge. I really want to give this EXALT mission my all and not half-ass it. I hope you guys understand and I am seriously sorry to just stop all of the sudden!

I'll monitor the thread until it's archived for Q&A to make up for it. And to start it of..

>>3136215
Warden all the way!
>>
>>3137638
It's alright Pixel. Take some time to recharge your batteries and come back fresh and read. We'll be here.
>>
>>3137638
We aren't going anywhere boss, take your time.
>>
>>3137638
I'm a vile lurker, but I just wanted to say go for it. Take some time, make some Foxhole fanart for us, and come back when your batteries are charged. Maybe you'll find some inspiration in the game!
>>
The thanks is very appreciated! I was honestly getting frustrated not being able to write anything up as each day passed.

>>3137892
I very much have gotten inspired by the game, to be honest. I've suddenly become very motivated to draw fanart of it after suffering in a fun way in the game.

Reminds me of when I started drawing XCOM fanart. A suden flash of creativity.
>>
>>3137896
Since Frosty's set his quest in a war these drawings cold be used over there possibly too.
>>
>>3137638
Don't worry about it, everybody needs to take breaks. I'll be there when you come back.
>>
>>3137979
What quest ?

>>3138644
Remember that idea a few threads back when we were all shooting the breeze about an anti Paranormal/Supernatural organization that coexisted with XCOM?

Yeah, no comment on THAT. But I have no plans on switching out of Wardens. They're french-german aesthetic is so pleasing to me and Jade Cove will have been Belka'd in vain, dammit!

>>3138644
Paranormal Agent Quest! Would recommend you give it a read while I recharge! Frosty's a damn good QM and bud of mine.
>>
>>3139504
will not be in vain!

Giving nukes out in a coop game like this might have been a bad idea.
>>
>>3139546
I mean the Collies were able to fire theirs in a non-retarded way
>>
>>3139605
Some people just misfire the nuke on purpose bc they are not right in the head. I hope that person got banned.
>>
>>3139976
It wasn’t a misfire, it was an entire clan’s leadership thinking they were smarter than everyone else who made that 5D chess move.
Oh and the devs don’t consider it griefing and are taking no action.

The Collies hit us with another V2 a third time, but we've managed to push back a bit. And the smaller islands and side regions are holding strong. Anything can happen!
