It's been a week since you woke up to find your worst nightmares could never have prepared you for what reality would become. Patchwork skin stretches across an eternal, shifting landscape of flesh, bone, and gristle, the new world's heartbeat pulsing through the dense, salty air that lays heavy across the wasteland. You and everyone that found themselves waking from the blissful dream of the pre-apocalypse quickly realized the alteration to the world didn't stop at the terrain. You and the other girls that survived grapple daily with abominable powers that warp what it means to be human, a harsh enough crucible to break the minds and wills of most that survived the world's end. However, if there's one thing you've learned in the time you've spent fighting and killing across these fetid plains, it's this;

Hell is best traversed with friends.

Your name is Shu, and ever since you woke up to find the memories of your past traded away for a hive nested in your spine, you've made friends with two girls that have come through the post-dream hell relatively unscathed. The first prefers to go by B'ni, a bright, bubbly girl with a shark-tooth grin and bone scythes that gird the back of her dog-like legs. The second is Gina, a quiet and insightful young woman who found herself robbed of sight shortly after her awakening, but she also gained the ability to tap into the powers of the fleshscape, bending it to her will. Together, the three of you have fought through an envious city, escaped a monsoon of acid rain, and worked together to defeat a phasing Enigma.

Most recently though, you found an unknowable force presenting you with a choice between two ways to bring the world to its knees. You took a third option, turning aside sheer power for a double-edged mutation that brings you closer to the people around you...

...though it may prove harder to be closer to them than you are at this very moment.
>>
B'ni insists in cradling you in her arms as Gina crouches before you, tracing along your face with her fingers as they reel from what you've told them. You can sense their worry and fear reverberating through your mind, an emotional tether that for now merely states the obvious.

"So... can you read my mind right now?" B'ni asks, and you turn to look into her bright green eyes that sparkle in the filtered daylight.

"No, not really..." you reply, trying to stand as B'ni's grip holds you fast against her as you're forced to lean back. "...it's more that I can sense how you're feeling...though it's not like I need the info given how you're...okay Gina I told you I'm fine so please stop poking my face."

She stands up with a huff, tossing back her brunette hair, fiddling with her headphones around her neck while she paces.

“Interesting...so you were given a choice by something and you basically spat in its face, right? Now you can just passively sense us…are you sure you don’t feel weird anymore, or…”

You raise a hand to stop her, and at the same time gently yet firmly extricate yourself from the surprisingly strong grip of your athletically inclined friend. “I’m okay, you two. I’m serious. I felt weird, I changed again, and now we pick up and keep moving, same as after every fight.”

You turn away from them and stare up at the massive mountain range that looms before the three of you. You intend to cut through these mountains to continue your westward journey to the Cord, and if a little thing like throwing up and passing out didn’t stop your friends from making good grades then it sure as hell isn’t going to stop you from navigating this impasse.

“B’ni?” you begin, eyeing a narrow opening at the base of the jagged rock walls, “When you scouted ahead earlier, did you check out the path?”

“Um…yeah, a little.” She replies, hesitant, “I didn’t want to get too far in, but it gets foggy a ways up there and the path is really jagged even early on. We should be able to make it, but it’ll be slow going.”

You glance back at your allies, realizing that with your second, prehensile-tongued mouth resting as a vertical slit along your stomach and B’ni’s wall-scaling greaves, Gina currently lacks any more effective form of mobility than her own two feet. You realize that if you’re intent on taking this shortcut, one of you is going to have to help her navigate through the pass. The two of them study you, concerned despite your assurances, as you determine if and how you’ll proceed through the intimidating path.

>>Gina can ride piggy-back with you as you use your tongue to traverse the terrain, allowing B’ni to run ahead. She can probably reach you faster than you could reach her in your current state.

>>B’ni has greater mobility, so she can carry Gina while you scout ahead. You still feel a little woozy, but you’re well enough to forge ahead.

>B’ni has greater mobility, so she can carry Gina while you scout ahead. You still feel a little woozy, but you’re well enough to forge ahead.
Time to BUNGEE our way through this. It'll be much harder with a person piggybacking us, and it's best to not risk trying that here with jagged rocks and walls all over the place.

"B'ni? I want you to run ahead and scout for us. You have the best mobility out of all of us, and Gina and I will bring up the rear and be support you can fall back to."

B'ni hesitates again, and it takes a pointed look from you and a mouthed 'I'm okay' to finally send her on her way up the slope, slicing across the taught terrain on scythes forged from solid bone. You kneel, back to GG as you usher her aboard.

"Uh...Shu, are you sure about this?" she asks, unusually reticent. "I don't want to weigh you down."

You stare at her incredulously, not sure how to reply as you give her a once-over. She still has the same loose, too-big hoodie she's worn since the first time you met in the warehouse, hanging down several inches below her waist and revealing legs clad in black tights and ending in a simple pair of sneakers. "Gina, just...no." you say, giving her withering stare. "You're fine, now hop on and let's catch up to B'ni before she gets too far ahead." She shrugs, settling her weight onto you back, her...oh.

Oh, damn.

That's what she meant.

You feel crimson creep into your cheeks as she presses further into your back, lacing her arms around your neck while yours hoist up her legs into a proper piggy-back. She nestles against your shoulder as you rise, running after your ally.

The going proves to be less treacherous than any of you had expected, as though the path before you had been either deliberately carved or well-tread by those that came before you, trudging along these calcite peaks. The range the three of you traverse appear to be a jagged assortment of titanic, shattered bones. Raw marrow oozes out of gashes in the ivory cliffs, an unsettling air winding its way down the mountainside, thickening as you ascend. You catch brief glimpses of B'ni as she darts ahead, pausing to creep around a corner before dashing off again.

"Thanks for this, by the way." Gina says gently, finally breaking the silence that had settled around you like the soupy, humid air. "I haven't really had the chance to catch up with her and I feel like now really isn't the best time."

You hike past a particularly irregular series of jutting bones, considering her words as you do.

"There's a time and a place for that even here, I guess." you say with a shrug, making her shift as she she clings to her back. "You'll get your chance, Gina."

She nods into your shoulder and hums thoughtfully. You lash out with your second tongue, its prehensile length snapping out and seizing hold of a stable cliff side to assist your leap. The silence settles back again, yet...you sense something unsettled in her. She's not upset, not quite angry, something you cannot yet place. You feel B'ni just on the edge of your newly-granted ability, but she just seems focused on the task at hand. You're becoming uncomfortable yourself, a combination of her tumultuous aura and the increasingly stomach-churning mist drifting down from unseen heights.

“This fog’s getting thick, let’s rest for a second. That good by you?”

Gina nods and with that, you send a swarmling to retrieve B’ni and guide her to your location. You kneel and allow Gina to dismount, amused to see her sit next to bone outcropping and immediately resume work on the Halo. Despite that, you still sense the heavy, roiling feeling that weighs on Gina.

A sudden movement around the corner catches your eye as B’ni skates around the corner, leaving thin blade-trails in the marrow as she skids to a stop in front of you. You feel something burst inside of her, a warmth that blossoms as she approaches and dims when she glances at Gina, turning into a dull, murky haze in an instant. The swarmlings you have summoned grow agitated at the sensation, tapping their own shells in irritation as you try and make sense of what you’re sensing.

“Is everything okay?” B’ni asks, feeling your forehead, “Are you feeling sick again? Sit down, I don’t want…”

“No, the fog is getting thicker by the second.” You reply, the surrounding murk slowly creeping in, “If we press on then the chances of us getting lost or hurt increases, so let’s stay put for now and wait for it to clear.”

She nods and dismisses her unwieldy greaves as she settles down next to you, patting the ground to urge you to sit. You note she’s chosen a spot a few meters away from Gina. You settle down, sending your swarmlings to set up a defensive perimeter around your resting grounds as the fog grows thicker by the minute, second only to the inexplicable tension that’s settled around your allies. You’re straining to think of what could’ve happened…did you upset them somehow? Did something happen while you were out, or is it just the normal stressors of waking up in a pulsing red wasteland?

In any case, neither of them seem willing to speak up and cut through whatever barriers they’ve decided to erect between each other. You don’t need this sort of baggage when you’re trying to survive, so you feel like you need to do something.

>> Select one of them to go off with and talk alone, leave the other one to rest and chill out while you and the other get to the bottom of this.

>>Take a walk, leave them to sort it out since you have a feeling it might have something to do with you…though with your enhanced recon abilities, listening in isn’t out of the question…

"So guys, you know that I can literally sense your feelings right now, yeah?"

B'ni glances at you sheepishly as GG slows her progress on the Halo. They glance at each other as you continue.

"Whatever's going on between the two of you, we need to process it before this gets in the way of our next fight. We're in this together, so something that affects one of us affects all of us. There's no need to let things fester, okay?"

The girl beside you nods, her eyes hidden by her black Bob cut. You glance at Gina, who's running her fingers through her hair.

"Did something happen while I was out? If it's me, I'll do what I can to correct it, I don't want for something I did to drive a..."

"I yelled at Gina when you were unconscious."

You turn to look at B'ni, GG's inscrutable expression matching the emotional tumult you cannot quite define. B'ni tucks an errant strand of hair behind the ear closest to you, revealing tears welling up around her eyes as she speaks slowly, tripping over her words.

"I blamed her for not r-realizing something was wrong with you sooner...I just got so mad and worried and...I accused her of...I was just s-so freaked out that you..."

"B'ni...okay Isabelle, look." Gina says, standing up with a sigh. "It's okay. We were both freaking out and said some things we clearly regret. I'm sorry that I hurt your feelings, I was freaking out too, okay? It's been a while since we've been around each other, so we're just going to have to readjust...no one's to blame for that, it's just a fact...it's how life works and It'd be tough under regular circumstances, let alone apocalyptic ones. I stand by what I said my goals are and that's not going to change, just so we're clear."

She let's a moment of silence pass before she continues, B'ni's face obscured as she looks up at her friend.

"I know where you stand, you know where I stand, and we both want to make it through this. We're friends, Isabelle. I'm not going to hurt you."

B'ni rises to her feet, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand as Gina opens her arms with a half-smile.

"...are we good?" She asks. Her answer comes in the form of a hug between the two as the cloud seems to lift between them. B'ni turns to you with an apologetic look on her face, made amusing by her fanged attempt at a smile.

"I'm sorry, you two. GG, I'm sorry I yelled at you, and I'm sorry I worried you, Shu. I'm okay, alright?"

There's still a complexity to the aura surrounding the two of them, but the tumult has died down considerably, replaced by a stable, if distant air. The surrounding haze begins to thin as the steep cliffs and sharply defined peaks slowly reappear, Gina putting the final touches on her nearly complete halo as B'ni lies down on the ground' stretching her legs in silence.

You're not quite sure what was said, but at least the two of them seem to feel better.

Pale flakes start to fall around you as the choking fog transitions into a light snowfall, the air still humid from the dense mist. You watch the snow alight upon your allies and the surrounding cliffs, practically disappearing as it lands on the ivory landscape. You smile as it lands on you as well, though it’s not nearly as cold as you…oh. You shudder as it dawns on you that the pale flakes steadily falling on you and your allies isn’t snow, and the choking, dense fog was merely a smaller variant of what coats you now.

It’s skin.

You wave off the flakes as the same realization comes to your allies, B’ni’s face screwed up in disgust as she quickly dusts her hair free of the foreign dandruff. Brushing off the skinfall becomes an exercise in futility given how steadily it falls, with you and B’ni resigning yourselves to be coated in the grotesque precipitation as Gina just pulls up her hood. You eventually give up the task and beckon your allies to continue up the cliffs, trudging past the dandruff that accumulates in the corners and crevices of the trail further up the mountain.

The path now proves to be easier to navigate than before as unstable and sharp ground gives way to a simple, yet narrow path, the three of you fully capable of making good time on foot. You take the lead, with Gina following suit as B’ni brings up the rear through the trail, surrounded on either side by sheer white cliff sides.

Gina suddenly pauses in front of you, a smile creeping across her purple-lined lips as the halo starts to glow steadily, with a pale, silver light at first that then transitions to a bright amethyst. She gingerly places the delicate creation on her head as it hovers a few centimeters above her wavy brown hair, thin strands of purple connecting it to her headphones.

“Wow…this is just…oh my god.” She stammers, empty eyes wide with wonder as she spins around, turning her head this way and that as she adjusts to the influx of information granted by her upgrade. She turns to face you, smiling wide.

“This is incredible, Shu! I can feel everything around me…I can sense you and B’ni, I can practically feel the flakes landing around me, like…all around me, a full three-sixty. I think the range is…about twenty, maybe twenty five meters. This is absolutely…”

The smile runs away from her as her focus shifts from you to somewhere over your left shoulder.

You turn, following her focus to see a massive set of pillars coming into view with the thinning snowfall, flanking either side of the trail as it widens sharply ahead. A large, papery banner is stretched taught between them, from which hangs a pair of crimson curtains obscuring the way forwards. B’ni strides forwards, squinting at the ill-formed text scrawled across the headline.

“The Art and Works of Julia Pickman” she says, reading aloud the words etched into the tanned, leathery placard. She immediately turns around.

“Yeah, no. Screw that noise.” B’ni says, glancing around for an alternate path as Gina shakes her head.

“The cliffs are too high to effectively scale, we’re bottle-necked here as far as I can see.” She says, prompting a miserable sigh from B’ni. You walk forwards, the red curtains coming into better view as the distance lessens and the faux-snowfall starts to taper off.

Fresh blood weeps onto the ground below them, the ivory at your feet stained with red rivulets that slither back down the path. The thin, translucent sheets are laced with a thinning network of veins as their contents seep to the floor. You take a step back from the curtains of freshly stripped skin and turn to your allies.

>>”I’m with B’ni on this one. Gallery or not, this is an obvious trap. We double back and find another way around.”

>>”Gina, you said this is the only way forwards, right? We’re topped off and well rested, I think we can get through whatever’s ahead. Let’s go.”

Ill support this. Id prefer to turn back honestly and find another path personally.

Plus its not like we hsve a time limit that we know of, both ic and ooc, so staying safe just seems like a better option than risking this.

Even if, best case scenario, it is literally just an art gallery and is no danger to us, not worth the risk of having to look at flesh art, and/or worse, having to listen to an artist talk about their work.
>>
>>3118728
Well now I kind of hope it is just an art gallery and that she doesn't want to make us part of it. I mean, if I know modern artists, it's that they thrive off of other people validating their efforts.
>>
>>3118568
“B’ni, I’m sure Julia Pickman worked very hard on this gallery and it would be rude to not have a look.” you say, silently calling your swarm to surround the three of you, preparing for combat.

Suppressing a shudder, you sweep the flesh curtain aside and lead your allies into the gallery proper. You find yourself staring down a hallway of sculptures, their obtuse angles and baroque sensibilities only heightened by the creator’s choice of clay. The way forward mimics a traditional art exhibit, littered with free-standing examples of the sculptor’s art, complete with smaller versions of the leathery placard from earlier with each displaying the title of the artist’s labors. B’ni stifles a horrified gasp as you view the empty husks of countless daughters that have been expertly molded, painstakingly twisted into a museum of warped, abused flesh.

B’ni cautiously edges forwards to the nearest sculpture, an obscene ouroboros wherein two hardened shells of human skin loop, the foot of one deep within the mouth of the other, the foot’s owner reaching, straining unnaturally into the second’s mouth, her arm disappearing halfway down the other husk’s throat. A glance shows you the title; “Immortal Cycle.”

Gina approaches another creation, and you wonder how it appears to her, senses altered and augmented by the Halo. She stands underneath the largest creation present, marveling as she stares up and into a thick dome of flesh, obviously crafted from the empty husks of dozens of victims. Peeking under the dome you see that pinpricks of light shine through deliberately placed holes, spears of light lancing through what once were the orifices of countless bodies. They are arranged to form a number of constellations, only a handful of which are recognizable, some familiar formations peppered at random among a host of foreign lights. It has been dubbed “Skies Long Past” by the one responsible for the loss of life that fueled its creation.

A curious creation catches your eye, small and simple in the midst of its grandiose fellows. You approach a delicate half-sphere no more than half a meter in diameter, impossibly thin layers of flesh depicting a cross-section of something unknowable. The thinnest layer of epidermis comprises the largest part of the shell, with a thicker layer held below by a deliberate tube of flesh. Numerous intricate layers form an onion of multi-toned skin until, finally, the core holds a sphere composed of several sets of lips, curved in a series of smiles. “Favored’s Reward” reads the title.

“D-do you like them?” a nervous, jittery voice calls out from somewhere ahead of you. You turn your attention to the one responsible for the grotesqueries you witnessed and find yourself facing a girl who is completely nude in the most unsettling way.

She stands like a hideous angel before you, her bare muscles crisscrossed with a network of pulsing veins, a furious red laced with cobalt blue and sickly purple across her body. A set of leathery wings sit rigid, attached to her back and laced with crimson thread, flapping gently in the stifling air. B’ni gags next to you despite what she’s witnessed thus far, and Gina struggles to keep her repulsion at bay as you let the mere sight of her sink in.

“I know m-my art is a little experimental, y’know?” she says while taking a step forwards, leaving bloody prints with every footfall. “It’s j-just such a hard market to b-break into so you really have t-to stand out or else y-you’ll just get swallowed up, yeah?”

You smile and nod, your swarmlings creeping around her sculptures, angling to stage a better ambush. Julia's dark eyes flick over to you instantly.

"W-what really stands out to you, when y-you look at them?" she asks, bare feet oozing on the pale ground as she walks closer, hands clenched in front of her, every shifting muscle and strained tendon working to close the gap as she stares at you expectantly.

If she tries to fuck with us, we can pull off the weird logic only an artist would understand. Say "You don't seem to be getting much inspiration from a lot of sources. Your art all feels kind of stale, no matter how fresh it is. Must be the fault of the artist." and shit like that to fuck with her, but only when real fighting starts.
>>

>"Your rather unique way of handling your medium of choice." Gesture to the 'Favored's Reward'.

>"You're a work of art yourself. In a rather good way I mean. They say the art is defined by the Artist and all of that."

>"You might as well be a living exhibit of your creations with a neat placard that reads 'Angel in the Flesh'"

Well she's an artist and what not, she could probably do some real damage with skin and flesh manipulation and we really don't want to walk out skinless like Julia. On the other hand, she acts like a desperate starving artist.

>"Do you uhh...take commissions? Show me what you can do with this (hand over 1 simple swarmling to her and 30% Bio). It still needs to look like a swarmling and function like a swarmling, but in terms of aesthetics? Go ham.
If we give her something to do, then she'll be distracted and absorbed in her work long enough for GG and B'ni to sneakily reach the other side of the gallery and towards the exit. Also, what calms artists down is the fact that someone appreciates their work of art and asks for their services.
>Have B'ni and GG also ask for commissions if Julia isn't "distracted" enough, B'ni should submit a pair of Calcite Greaves/boots and GG should submit one halo. Both of them will have to specify that they still want their boots and halo retain their function but with slightly "better" aesthetics, but if don't go "too ham". Hopefully this should tide Julia over immensely and we just might be able to get over to the other side of the pass without a problem.

>If the gallery is on the front side of the pass, then her workshop (and subsequently the mountain pass exit) should be on the other side, If we're going with the "ask for commissions" plan, we should ask to see how she does her work.

>Also, try to radiate a sense of calmness to B'ni and GG and get across to them the sense that Shu has a plan.
If things get tense and Julia approaches endangering personal space territory:
>Gina should do an enemy scan with that Halo of hers and find any weakpoints on Julia in case things get hairy. And Hand B'ni a Cord.
>B'ni will have to play defensive this time. If Julia's powers revolve around tendrils of flesh and muscle, we'll need her to cut them down. Also, please subtly break off a calcite greaves blade to use as a makeshift Machete. We don't want her to be caught by the ankle.

I'm editing my vote on the whole "B'ni and GG giving her a Halo and Greaves for Julia to mess with" by Having GG politely decline giving Julia a halo to mess with. She can claim that the Halo is an art piece of her own making and doesn't like anyone messing with it. Surely an artist like Julia can understand a statement like that.

Yes to this

The way her stuff is described actually reminds me of this one dude who is similar vaguely to HR Giger. Zdzisław Beksiński. Had to look it up because I couldn't remember his full name, just that it was vaguely Russian or Eastern European.

(Gentlemen, my sincerest apologies. I am afraid that unexpected life curcumstances have cropped up. I am afraid that I will have to adjourn here for the foreseeable future, but I will be returning either closer to the end of the year or early next month. What would be the best way to let you all know when I will resume?)

Just post a new thread a day or two before you resume in full, as an announcement, then continue in that thread.

Post in the /qtg/ and make a preemptive/ re-cap thread.

Quick question, do you have a Twitter? I think that would be a good idea to make one if you don't have one. Easier to keep your folks updated.

(I don't, but I will make one and update the next thread with it, and I'll post it here if it is still active.)
