With the sun as low as it is there won't be much time to travel. Especially not with an uppity girl who looks like she's never walked for more than an hour. And if Shion is as important as she says she is then traveling through the night will only tempt more trouble than needed. You pull the priestess along, forcing her out of her shuffle, and head towards an inn. Yuki trots along next to you, her new backpack bursting at the seams with more ninja gear than you care to count. Though her hidden star headband seems to have changed positions, from her forehead to her hip.

Two rooms are decided on, the tokens handed over by a strangely familiar old woman. You shrug off the concern and head in, ensuring Yuki and Shion are settled in before finding your own. Next door in case anything happens, though as quiet as the town is you doubt anything will come up. Plenty quiet for you to meditate some more.

You are Eliko, apprentice samurai from the Land of Iron who lacks any semblance of chakra, and student to Lord Mifune. On your way to the Land of Demons to retrieve the ronin Hitoshi Satou you somehow picked up a priestess come to the conclusion that ninja are such in name only. At least from what you've seen, most are obnoxiously loud and too keen on open conflict. But worse yet, you came across a burnt down village with it's people slaughtered and earned a swift defeat at the hands of the perpetrator. Hopefully your scroll to Master Mifune arrives in timely fashion.

As the moon climbs into a starlit sky a rotten smell creeps in on a breeze, disturbing your trance. Footsteps stomp outside your room in quick succession along with the rattling of weapons. You ignore it, you ignore the people shouting, you ignore it all up until a burst of fire lights up the inn's paper walls. A concerned Yuki slides open your door but you're already on your feet.

"Stay with Shion," you order before running out of the inn. The rotten smell only grows worse. That same acrid odor of burnt flesh and hair from before, at the destroyed village. People stampede in the opposite direction while screaming incoherencies. A flurry of flaming arrows shower over the western edge. Trees and buildings burn alike, showering the sky with glowing embers and choking the air with smoke. A few unfortunate people lay dead in the streets, face down and trampled over by their fellow countrymen.

Archers counter fire, though their own arrows lacking any flame. You're drawn towards the bulwark, nimbly making your way through the quickly thinning crowed.

>cont
>>
"Archers at the ready!" A gravely voiced officer shouts. You peak past a building and find a small wooden wall and gate, garrisoned with a line of archers in the rear and pole arm wielders up front. "Nock!"

The line readies and nock their arrows, then the command is given to find their targets and ultimately fire. It's much less impressive than you hoped, only a dozen arrows streaking away. Something about it felt... less grandiose than it should. Top heavy yumi bows standing taller than their wielder are more suited for horseback or much larger formations. And the arrows, half the length of the bow in some cases, are much too long

"You!" The officer shouts, doing a short jog over. Sweat beads from under his tufted helmet and his hand wrests on a katana. "Are you a shinobi?"

"Eliko, the Land of Iron," you answer through gritted teeth. It's bad enough dealing with them, you could go without the mix-up.

"A samurai!" He grabs you by the shoulders with a relieved look. "We're under attack by imperishable beasts and men. Please, you have to help us!"

You glance around the formation, displeased with their state of ready. The spear-men stand haphazardly with their spears at varying degrees of preparedness while the archers clench up and loose scattered shots. No more than twenty four men in total, less than a normal garrison size by a large sum. But you can make it work.

"Spear-men!" You bellow, pushing to the front. The officer repeats your orders, forcing them to attention. "Inverted wedge on the gate, two deep! Archers, staggerd line behind them!"

Tactics and strategy are just as important in a samurai's arsenal as any blade. But you have to admit Master Mifune's teachings had been somewhat lacking, providing you only the basics. And as any good man does, you lead from the front. Your katana shines azure under the moon and fire, nearly taking on a life of it's own. As the formation readies itself you give one order that makes your stomach clench, one that you're sure would give the best chances of victory. "Open the gates! We'll bottleneck them!"

The officer gives you a concerned look but repeats our your command with a stutter. Both men on the gate nervously look at each other but do as told, swinging open the large wooden double doors with some effort. In that moment your confidence falters as in the lead of the horde are familiar looking corpses. Many charred black, others with crushed limbs, and even one with a caved in chest. The people from the village, among them a hundred pale skinned bodies in white robes and old samurai armor emblazoned with the Red Flower. One thing they all have in common though are yellowed paper talismans stuck to their foreheads, each identical and written in an unintelligible language.

"Spears at the ready!" You order. Twelve spears, staggered in order, fall to the ready on either side of you. One man in front, one behind, and behind them an archer. Your breath shortens as the first dead villager shambles into range, the claustrophobia near unbearable. A spear sticks it in the heart, a killing blow for any man. But it only continues on, impaling itself further and further with every strained step.

The spear-men yells in fear, trying desperately to dislodge his weapon. A moment before he drops it, you split the bodies head with your sword. It flops to the ground, unmoving while it's talisman fitters away into ash. Before you can dwell on it a weight slams into you, greasy yet crunchy. A burnt body snaps at you with it's unusually white teeth while it's slick hands crush your arms. With a yell you dislodge the abomination, it's arms snapping at the elbows yet still grabbing at you with all the force they could muster. It's inhuman, unnatural, just like Kankuro's puppet.

>cont
>>
"It's a jutsu!" You shout, cutting it through the head. Once again the tag disappears into a spastic cloud of ash. An experimental cut of a nearby talisman confirms your suspicion as the body just stops working like someone cut it's strings. "Damage or dislodge the talismans! Archers, loose freely but aim for the head!"

Arrows start shooting between the spear-men, some on target others not. Either way the enemy is completely unresponsive, not even bothering to cover their weak spot. And as the fight begins to drag on, you notice they hardly do anything but walk forward. After felling a dozen yourself, the feeling of anxiety fades. Are they even a threat? Just a shambling horde of bodies with no better use than to soften up defenses at an agonizingly slow pace. So how did that village get overrun? Unless they're just an auxiliary force.

An eagle cries overhead, reinstating that dread as it's silhouette crosses the moon. A shrill bugle screams from the east, from behind you. They're a distraction and you openly engaged them. If Michio leads the attack there is little you can do but run but maybe he isn't, he did say he had to return to his emperor after all. Could they be an entirely separate force?

The zombies clearly aren't very intelligent or innovative, and they don't seem particularly strong, just annoying resilient. If we close the gate and finish off the ones that are already inside, we should be able to deal with them later.

Also, ignore this roll. It's not important, probably.
>>
"Close the gate!" You shout. The gate men acting quick but only manage to close is part way, jammed by the mass of bodies pushing from the other side. "Push them out!"

You launch yourself into the fray as the guardsmen slowly work the horde down. Bone fragments cling to your hilt and rotten blood slicks your blade. Every stroke fells a body but the process takes an agonizing amount of time. Even with the spear-men landing their strikes well enough it's just not fast enough. But you can't simply abandon the post, the village would be ran over. And engaging the flankers by yourself is suicide. But you beat them back with only a few minor wounds on some of the spear-men.

After ordering the gate guards to bar their post and keep the horde at bay you lead the formation across town. Many of the remaining denizens hide within their houses, only peaking out as you pass. A small part of you wishes that they'd take up arms to defend their homes but it seems like that's too much to ask. Many would probably leave without a second thought if they could.

"Mysterious Peacock Method, destroy!" You hear Yuki shout. A man armored much like Khamsin smashes through a wooden fence next to you, a gaping hole where his heart should be. A sword snaps and you see your pale companion slam a flying knee into another warrior's throat, dropping him immediately. She perks up after spotting you, her unnaturally serious expression returning to it's smile.

"Eliko!" She shouts, the man she just killed is flung into the air by some unseen force as she raises her hand in greeting. Only to smash through the roof of a nearby house, garnering several terrified screams from within. "O-oops."

"Wheres Shion."

"Ah-"

"Please, like you really care," a familiar girl chides from a nearby tree. Yuki helps the priestess down and the both of them join your group. You grab two spear-men and look them dead in the eyes.

"Find somewhere safe and guard this girl," you say, gripping a bit tighter with every syllable. In a real fight one ninja should be at least worth two spear-men and you did say you'd help Shion. It would be hard to help her if she died. Frustration prickles at your skin. "If anything happens to her... well I'm sure you're familiar with seppuku."

They nod nervously and you leave them, ordering the formation to advance. Several of the foreign warriors take notice and retreat down the street, calling out in their language to hopefully regroup in a better place than clustered streets. You're hopes are dashed a moment later as forty men charge you down. Plated and studded leather coats, heavy scale guarding from their shoulders to their heads. And each wielding either a spear or saber.

>cont
>>
An order must be made otherwise your own formation will break. But if you stay as you are it could turn into a messy brawl without any clear line. The frustrated prickle makes your hair stand on end and unwelcome thoughts creep in. Your own warriors couldn't hope to defeat them, not having only half the number. No matter how skilled yourself or they are, numbers almost always win a fight. But precarious planning is a close second. And from your current positioning not all of your forces are revealed to the enemy just yet.

You motion for the formation to halt before they come fully into view of the enemy, then relay your orders. Archers in two groups, split on either side of the street to flank while the spear-men form a wedge to hopefully provide a distraction. At best you only need to kill half before the enemy breaks. While the same could happen to your own force it's much less likely being backed into a corner with no retreat. A horde behind you and a dexterous foe in front, there is no retreat.

Taking the point of the formation, you ready the spear-men. They level their weapons chest height then wait. The charging enemy will lose some in the initial rush with too much momentum to slow down before being impaled upon the spear wall. Then it happens, the first of their men crashing into the spears while being pushed on by those behind them. Men shout and scream with guttural cries as the first fall. Others take their places, forcing you into action.

A spear tip lunges past you, glancing off your shoulder only for the weapon to be cut in half with a quick counter then it's wielder felled much the same. Another pushes forward, raising his saber high only to be stabbed through the throat. Adrenalin burns through your body like fire with each kill, the frustration ebbing into an exhilarating rush. This is battle, far from home fighting for your life. Any one of these foreign soldiers could kill you with one wayward arrow, one lucky blow. Instead it's them who fall, rending their flesh with each strike.

In your fading periphery you see the archer's head peak over nearby roofs on either side. Six to either flank with enough arrows to thin the enemy to a more manageable size. Yuki watches you with a concerned frown. You don't care, all that matters is the next kill. Another man falls to your sword, split open from the stomach and clenching his gut.

An unseen spear catches you in the bicep, forcing you a step back. With a snarl you strike back, severing the man's arm clean at the joint. He screams in pain, clutching at the stump. But you don't kill him, you let him bleed and his comrades watch.

"Eliko!" Yuki shouts. A red fog clears, leaving you in the moment. Your men are wounded, near breaking with several dead or dying on the ground. But there are still plenty of invaders, and one in particular near the back giving you a deathly glare. A mountain of a man hoisting a club over his shoulder.

"Archers!" You bellow. Not a moment later arrows fly down, a constant stream. The effects are immediate, several enemy soldiers near the back breaking and fleeing. Yuki jumps from her perch and forms an unfamiliar hand sign. Men are tossed into the air, pieces of them gouged out or limbs ripped off. Not very subtle of her.

>cont
>>
As exhaustion begins to grip your body their strength fades, most fleeing. Those unable are caught by the archers as they limp away. The rest scream in the streets with one final effort but are easily dispatched by what remains of your own forces. Only seven spear-men remain, ragged and nearly beaten. The archers, while tired, are still capable and at full strength though their munitions dry.

Yuki marches over and looks you in the eyes, her own breathing heavy and eyes narrowed in anger. She sighs and waves you off before disappearing in a blur, hopefully to go secure Shion. Twelve archers who collect arrows from the battlefield, seven spear-men resting, and the officer either died or fled. An eagle cries overhead, the forces haven't completely gone. Where did the big one go.

Wood splinters and one of your men howl in pain, trampled over by the towering foreign soldier. He stands twice as tall as you, long black hair pulled into a topknot. Instead of the studs or plates the others wore, all of his armor is made up of small iron scales. Of course, he couldn't have just ran away like the rest. One final showdown, a duel.

"Samurai!" He roars in challenge while pointing a big sausage like finger at you. A spear sits in the mud next to you, it's former owner's hand still clutching it. "I will crush your skull under boot!"

He charges at you, bashing away a few unfortunate archers still in his way. His boots sink into the blood soaked earth with every step and his club sways heavily, studded with protruding black rods from every well cut section. He aims to take you in one strike, force you to the ground where he can maul you just like that bear wanted to.

Whew, writing.

You flick the blood off your sword and sheath it, crouching low and poised. One hand on on the upturned handle, one on the sheath. If he's going to charge you like the bear, you're going to kill him like the bear. With how he carries himself, high centered, it should be much easier. Though a club nearly the size of yourself is worrisome.

The men you commanded not long ago fade into black as your vision tunnels. Mud slick with red turns into a foundation hard as stone while a distant fire shines off the man's armor, providing you everything you need to know about it. You can't directly cut it, stab it, and with his size bashing is useless. But as he raises his club you see a glaring weakness. His pits are anything but armored, just thinly padded leather.

Witch an exhale you take a step forward and draw, your katana nothing more than a flash before you sheathe it just as quickly. The cutting of muscle and bone, leather, you felt nothing but the motion. The club narrowly misses your head, showering everything and yourself with cold mud as it slams into the ground. It's wielder slides to a stop on his side, grasping at the air for several long seconds before turning pale and going limp. Blood pulses weakly from under his arm for nearly two minutes, every beat becoming softer and softer until it's nothing more than a dribble. And then it stops.

The eagle cries one last time and flies away, the battle has ended. While you are victorious, the city has yet to escape destruction. "Archers," you order, snapping them to attention, "Ensure the western gate is secure then put out the fires. Spear-men, take a few minutes then go help."

"Sir!" They shout in unison. The spear-men hop to their feet with renewed vigor and head towards the fires, ignoring your order to rest. You stop for a moment, finding your rice hat half buried in the mud without even realizing it was gone to begin with. You let it hang from your back and head towards the inn, ready for some rest. A few bodies litter the road, some town guards, others the invaders, and an unfortunate few unarmed citizens.

Standing in the inn's entrance is the old woman who manned the reception area, smoking a pipe and watching you carefully. Three invaders lie in a neat pile off to the side without any apparent wounds. You nod and move past her, taking a few moments to collect your thoughts before entering Yuki and Shion's room. One misstep, a flawed order, would have ended tonight with a run down village. The total damage is yet to be seen but you know it won't be good.

>cont
>>
"Don't just stand there!" Yuki shouts from inside. You enter, spotting the two spear-men you had ordered to protect Shion sitting in the corner and playing cards. A tear in the back wall and another dead body out in the courtyard proves you at least made that decision correctly. They wave and you dismiss them, with orders to help the western gate if needed. But finally, after what feels like hours, you sit down.

"What's the matter," Shion snidely remarks, "long night?"

"We're leaving," you answer after chugging the jug.

"What? You can be serious." Shion groans.

"I'm up, Yukis up, you're up, it's the best time. Besides, not sure I can get back to sleep after all that." You stretch and stand, the exhaustion still present but less significant than before. Yuki jumps to her feet and grabs her gear bag before helping Shion up. The two make a strange pair, you note as the former casually tightens the priestess's obi.

As you leave the Inn you give the old lady another nod and set out, trudging through the now active town. Bodies are hauled off and the fires already doused. Everyone looks a little worse for wear but few seriously hurt. Many give you respectful bows as you pass, gratitude for what little help you provided. The western gate is damaged, the bar bend and wooden panels splintered, but nothing made it through it seems.

The gate guards, and with them two archers, give much more formal bows and plenty of verbal thanks before letting you through. Once you do step through, however, your assaulted by the foul smell of rotting flesh and defecation. The once reanimated corpses had been somewhat cleared away to the side but many more act almost like pave stones for the road. Arrows pierce many of the bodies by the dozen near the front but as you travel further and further along less and less arrows are visible. Yet there are still more corpses.

Yuki lets Shion climb up onto her back to help pick up the pace but before you reach the field of death's edge a sudden movement stops you. "Sir!" An archer shouts from the forest before spring out. "All enemies routed or defeated, and Officer Kyo has been executed for desertion!"

"Well, better go report that to the village," you answer. He couldn't be too much older than you, maybe seventeen or eighteen. He's not calling you sir for mistaken seniority, that's for sure. The skin along his fingers and inner arm is raw and bleeding in some spots, damage from heavy bow usage. Didn't he have any forearm brace or finger protectors? "But good job, you should go get yourself some rest."

"You're not staying?"

"I've got my own business to attend," you answer, nodding towards Shion.

"Then please," he bows stiffly and deep, almost prostration. "Farewell on your journey and know I, we, owe you a great debt for your help. You will always be welcome here are Tokai Village."

"Thank you, and good luck." You give a casual nod and head off. The moon begins to set and early morning light is already visible on the horizon. Three days to the Land of Demons, hopefully no more distractions. But with Yuki and Shion squabbling loudly that might not be a possibility. Like two aggravated hens in a pin. You hope they won't keep it up the entire trip but know they probably will.
That's it for the rest of tonight. I'll be back tomorrow afternoon at 12PM PST, or might start a bit earlier like today. Hope you guys are enjoying it so far and please leave any questions, comments or criticism.

Silence. You hadn't noticed it at first, but there it is. Two days worth of nagging in complaining from both of your companions. Too much walking, not enough food, I need shelter to sleep in, I just need to sleep. Nothing but incessant nagging. Shion absently pads along behind you, her arms drooped and head hung low. Yuki isn't fairing much better, her head lulled back and eyes closed with her arms lazily slung through her backpacks straps to better rest them. Both shiver from a light breeze. You smile at the dull blue horizon, even if they're just too tired to talk you'll take it.

A fog had settled in sometime last night and it's effects are on full display. Dense haze fills the forest and road so heavy that anything bellow the chest might as well not exist. It rolls from a distant mountain range like water, masking the valley bellow. No, not a valley, it's a deep ravine bordering the Land of Demons. You're nearly there.

"Feel that brisk morning air!" You exclaim, letting an arm free of your yukata. The cold fog clings while you enjoy a refreshing alpine smell. Nothing better than a bitter morning in some highlands to get the body moving. Dense pine forests with little to no underbrush, stony faced mountains capped in snow. Almost like home, just not as white washed. No, not home, three wolves is too cold for trees to grow. Yuki grumbles.

"We're almost-" Yuki and Shion are gone. There one moment then just gone. In a short moment the fog grows in density and depth, covering your head and reducing visibility to only a few feet. You grip your katana as the hair on your neck stands on end. Something is very wrong.

"Eliko!" Shion shouts in the distance. North west, you're sure of it. Then Yuki's muffled yelling echoes from the east.

A chain slams into the ground next to you, bladed along every link. Then it recoils into the fog, reeled into an absurdly large gauntlet of a man you only now see. Shaggy dark hair held back by a horned hidden mist headband, a scratch through the center. A missing-nin.

"You missed," you say, your morning ruined.

He stays silent, watching you with intensity. His eyes flick for a moment, between you and something else. Or someone else. You turn in time to as another dressed much the same as the first, except with one horn from his mist headband instead of two. An ambush, of course it was. And from the looks of it, they're stalling, not trying to outright kill you.

"Where are my companions?" You ask, slowly drawing your sword. But they still don't answer, just stand there. Then they both deform, melting away into puddles of water. Clones, they were a distraction. You sheath your sword and take a step forward, only to hesitate. North west to Shion or double-back east for Yuki. Shion is unable to defend herself in any sort of meaningful way, it's why you offered to escort her home. But you might need Yuki's help to get her back in the first place.

You grind your teeth. It couldn't have just be a pleasant walk.

Yuki can handle herself, you decide, she's a ninja after all. You break into a sprint to the northwest, finding the path with some effort. A broken branch here and there, kicked up podzol, footprints in mud. Not very stealthy for a ninja. You jump over a rocky outcrop, spotting a dozen explosive tags. They detonate, showering you with stone shards but you're already far enough away that they don't cause much damage, no more than a few scratches.

You hop to the left, a chain smashing the ground next to you much like the clone's. "Abandon your friend?" He asks, the presumed owner of the second clone says. Except his headband isn't from the hidden mist, it's a musical note. "A shame, I thought you samurai respected loyalty."

"I am loyal to my duties," you answer, drawing your sword. Shion hangs in a tree, tied up and gagged but seemingly unharmed and awake. Though with the glare she's shooting you maybe it would be better if she wasn't. Either way, her captor must be confident in his abilities. "Besides, Yuki is a capable fighter."

"You made the wrong call!" He shouts. His chain flies at you, splintering a tree as you barely side step it in time. It rattles and returns to the awkward looking gauntlet on his arm. Claws, heavily armored, and capable of launching a weaponized chain at high speed. A dangerous tool but cumbersome, and easily predictable. Much like that hunchback's gauntlet.

He throws several kunai and closes the distance between you, lashing out with his metal clawed hand. Sparks shower from your blade as it catches between his fingers, nearly pushing it from your hands from the weight alone. He follows up with a punch from his unaugmented, nailing you in the jaw and throwing you back a few steps. He's strong, but not much more than yourself.

His chain is launched once more, this time a sweeping attack aimed at your head. The way he's focused on controlling it leaves him open. Unorthodox weapons advantages almost always consist of surprising their opponent with something they weren't prepared for. And that advantage disappears within a few attacks. Like now, you can see how unwieldy the chain is for anything other than an aimed launch, almost as if it was designed for another person.

>Dodge and follow it in as he recovers
>Try and pin it to the ground

Well, that's not good. This one will be my last for today.

If he's aiming high then all you have to do is get low. And with as slow as the chain is moving it won't be too big of a feat. You duck, hugging the ground but not going prone. Looking up you expect the chain to pass harmlessly over you, except it doesn't. A heavy weight knocks you from your crouch and small blades dig into your skin. The chain wraps around you several time, only worsening with each pass.

Blood pours from between the links, each razor sharp edge deep enough to cause lasting damage if positioned right. Unfortunately, you're sure several are. Your left arm hangs numbly and a very unpleasant sensation stabs your lungs with each breath. The sound ninja smirks at you, pulling his chain tighter to worsen your pain. You grit your teeth and hold still, struggling will only make it worse.

"I'm not very interested in having the Land of Iron on my back but for you I'll make an exception." His grip changes if only for a moment as he reels back to crush you causing the chain to loosen. An opportunity of escape.

You spin your sword upwards and slip it between the coils until it finds a link to leverage, forcing it all up and away from you. The whole wrapping goes limp a moment before it's violently pulled back into his gauntlet, though not without raking more cuts along your arms and back. He snarls for a moment then launches in to attack, gauntlet hand poised to claw you and the other ready to punch. But you already know this trick.

>Dodge both attacks
>Block the claw and counter
>Cut through the gauntlet
>Write-in

This will be all for today, go ahead and vote and I'll get back to it Monday.

For anyone interested, I'm not going to have the time to run until after the new year. I'll update in this thread if it isn't dead or start a new one if it is. And no, the nart curse isn't taking me. So long as people humor my shitty writing I'll keep the quest going. So until then merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Quest is archived at http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?searchall=Three+Wolves

And if anyone still gives a shit I'll be starting a continuation of this thread either Friday night or Saturday morning.
