Once upon on a strange eon, on a long dead planet. Where once stood a breathtakingly advanced alien species, now only ruins remain. All life is dead, and all signs of life have been eroded and drowned by the elements. Save for one.

Once a simple program designed to simulate life, now released onto a barren world, the Autonomous Machines- or A.Ms- have spread far and wide from their humble roots. From bloated, floating oil-sucking plankton, to swarming electric colonies at home in black iron towers. Simple minded garbage disposal, have become slightly less simple minded, two headed predators of all shapes and sized. And the small pests designed to feed on the data keeping these machines afloat, now live in vast webworks of uncomfortably intelligent, mind blasting blades.

Among many, many more.

WORLD EVENTS

Having just recovered from an age of fire, brought on by the catastrophic impact of a fragmenting megastructure, the environment is settling back to normal. Whatever normal is here. But the recent tectonic activity has released a much older, much stranger holdover of the fallen civilization that once called this place home.

Current Event
>Plague of Flesh
>>3139626
Strange organisms stirred from an ancient sleep, whatever their original intent may have been is lost to time. When they come in contact with an AM's systems, they initiate a bizarre process; corrupting them into semi-organic parodies of their former selves, and passing those strange genes onto their children.
>Every evolution moving forward MUST roll a d20 to determine if it becomes infested until the plague has ended.
>The plague can be combated via specialized evolution, and can end prematurely if the environment counteracts It well enough
>On rolling a 1, 10, and 20 that evolutionary branch will be replaced with a biomechanical version of itself. Up to you to determine what that actually changes.
Or if you don't want to go through the effort, say so and I'll try to get to it myself. I don't want to discourage anyone from playing.

thanks to the ever increasing efficiency of the mothership siphons and their antennae, many uninfected motherships have not only begun to exert control over uninfected yellow siphons, but their main predators, the shredders, as well. while they have their own soldiers to battle, they use the shredders almost like a salvage crew and auxiliary soldiers against the infected motherships, swooping in to make the kill and getting whatever resources they can from their carcasses. The motherships have, for lack of a better way of putting it, begun predating upon the infected motherships.

The floating oilspouts have fared well in the new era, and play host to a vibrant colony of smaller symbiotic machines. Despite a cleaner atmosphere, the machine simply adapted from processing toxins to oil, to producing what is called "blue crude" or atmospheric harvested carbon dioxide made into a crude blue fuel. As a consequence atmospheric oxygen levels are on the rise, which is beneficial to organics, but corrosive to unprotected machines. The floating spout is made mostly of lightweight polymers and alloys, so it does not give a damn.

The MacroSpout is an apex evolution of the launching spout, all of it's drills and processing equipment is tucked away under a massive skirt which it uses to slowly traverse the oceanic bed collecting resources. Unlike other spouts this machine seems to horde all of it's resources and even [OIL] to make an endless deluge of rockets that are hurled into the black sky.

from the extra chunky line of psychovores spawns the scaffoldcrust. A crystalline collection of detritus and mechanized parts from shattered psychovores. The organism apparently is trying to reinforce what are already destroyed orbital scaffolding supports, in addition to intact ones. However the quality of improvement is dubious at best, it seems like there should be something more, but is currently lacking. The crust rarely extends up past the oceanic surface before flaking off.

the motherships begin creating fully standardized templates of siphons to defend the fleet.

The first of these new purpose designed organisms is the Delta Siphon. Combining the best features of two very similar designs within previous "schools", the Delta is resource efficient for it's size, and while it lacks the vicious piercing capabilities of it's predecessors, the fins which also serve as heat sinks allow for extended firing of the electrolaser.

The Scaffoldrust is a divergent form of Scaffoldcrust, one that simply overtakes and consumes whatever it latches on rather than repairing it, leaving only a gaping hole where it once was when it detaches at the end of it's lifecycle, floating away on water currents in order to infest more and more. As it doesn't spend most of it's energy on repair, it is able to grow much faster than the Scaffoldcrust.

Additionally, it also seems to be able to infect both other machines and the scrap-rich oceanic surface, acting as a kind of cleanup crew, destroying the myriad of unsightly mechanical carcasses dotting the ocean floor.

The Laser Favela bug gains smaller backmounted lasers. Since they're running off of the same system as its larger main laser, the Laser Favela Bug can only fire them in pulses.

The lasers have a gigantic recoil which means they're better used for propulsion rather than attack, especially sicne cooling them requires precious CRYOTHEUM.

ADDITIONALLY, the back code laser is mutagenic which spells bad news for the Tank Decons which it steals cryotheum from.

The Festive Psychoshield steals the [CODE] for [CRYOTHEUM] production from the Tank DeCons, incorporating small amounts of this substance into it's skates, allowing it to slide much faster.

Meanwhile, some CryoCons repurpose their duplicate head/arm, using instead as a second, much larger [CRYOTHEUM] production unit. The exhaust [CRYOTHEUM] released into their enviroment by this new cooling unit, alongside other enviromental factors such as topography (Is it really topography if it's all scrap and rubble?), has caused the creation of small microbiomes which are colder than the rest of the land. Many Cryo-capable Cons seem to migrate to these pocket climates, which seems to only help them stabilize and cool further.

As Crusadercons do not generate tehir own cryotheum, they rely on the cryotheum dumped into the oceans by Cryocons.

Coarsecon still fighting the Organics find a way to take advantage of the fact that they had become their newest target. Instead of attempting to avoid the organic infestation completely, they incorporate it in a way that helps keep them at bay: They continue purposely preying on bio-mechanical A.Ms, but instead of just ripping them to pieces indiscriminately, they begin suctioning the organic components while still shredding the [SCRAP]. Acting as vacuum cleaners, the Cleaning Crew Coarsecons begin suctioning and storing the organics in a new organ present inbetween their mandibles, confusing them and making them slowly digest eachother, and then turning the resulting fleshy paste into a much more macabre bio-diesel. This process is very slow however, taking months and even years to produce useful amounts of this new [BIO-OIL].

Only a dozen children at most will survive their violent birth, the rest succumbing to their malformities or being consumed by more fortunate siblings. In any case, the process is always lethal to the mother.

the scaffoldcrust have begun to organize more efficiently, using what remains of their mechanical parts as supports which aid them in remaining cohesive and, most importantly, not falling apart as easily, allowing them to not only reinforce scaffolding easier, but often allowing them to extend a ways past the oceanic surface, rarely even generating fields along the coastlines of the former megastructure. Most scaffoldcrust is still largely coastal, and through some half-functioning remnant of their past some mechanized parts of their structure remain functional, allowing the scaffoldcrust to flake itself off through (almost entirely unintentional) flaking off into the sea, spreading this particular form of scaffoldcrust further.

The Sculpted Siphcon modus operandi is further refined, now instead of completely hijacking the spouts when they are in their prepubescent phase, the Crusadeacons simply inject them with [CODE] that make them grow CrusadeCon-like segments that are used as medical bays for fighting both the CoarseCon malign [CODE] and the Organics by injecting them with the either the Cure [CODE] or a potent "virus" that makes the affected A.M violently combat the organics by any method possible, be it overheating, freezing, poisioning, etc...

These segments are usually found where the oil exhausts of the Siphons would normally be, and have hollow segments that "extend" them. This means that the affected Siphons don't really realise they have extra parts in them, since they don't really change their normal behaviour, besides having to share some of their energy.

Having long battled against flesh infection, the motherships have tended to cohabitate with the various Crusader AMs since the first sculpted siphcons. Only now have they assimilated as a true Crusader AM, seemingly being modified by Crusader AMs almost as if by choice. Over time, the standardized templates of fleet siphons are modified as well, with their new Sculpted Motherships at the center of it all.

Sculpted Lysis are quickly persecuted by the Social Lysis, their programming confuses them for colonial-lysis, and drives them to erradicate their modified-brethen. This forces the Sculpted Lysis to become more like their past-selves, devolving many of their changes, but still mantaining their prime directive of fighting off organics.

The Fabergé Sculpted Lysis are much more similar to their cousins, and are able to communicate with them, correcting a fatal flaw their ancestors had. They are quickly assimilated into Social Lysis Society, yet are limited to three-per-pack, any individual past that limited is turned into [SCRAP] by its cousins.

The Sculpted Lysis purges by emitting special frequencies that inhibit organic growth, much like the Social Lysis do with ColonyGrass, and just like the anti-grass signals, the anti-organic signals are able to influence any specimen of either the Spout or the Psychovore family.

While larger organisms can survive this heat, smaller AMs and organics who venture too near are often boiled alive. To fuel the constant demand for OIL and to aid in heat dissipation, the Sunislands have developed a larger sundisk.

With the ecosystem becoming strangely viral, an automated system has detected the aggressively adapting “Crusaders” and the Incursion of Flesh as one of an unknowable number of variables that may threaten the experiment. Although there’s no one there to observe it, the machine acts to solve what it considers a problem.

EVENT: GLOBAL TERRAFORMA
The planet is blasted with a [SOURCE CODE] EMP, effectively halting all machines on the planet at once, and over the course of a short decade, the surface of the world is reshaped. The Artificial plate tectonics shift and crack, the atmosphere becomes dense with alteration chemicals, and the temperature fluctuates so wildly, the ruins experience centuries of weathering in ten short years.

As one final correction, what remains of the automated systems descend to the planet and hand select several species under recent observation. Necessary “adjustments” are made en masse, and these new forbearers are given an evolutionary head start above all others

Flowery fluff aside, here’s what this means for the game
>The following creatures are each a staple of their environment, and better suited to survival than any precursors.
>These are “mid level” starter species. Each will be explained in detail for new players to get in without having to catch up, and old players can further diversify the ecosystem
>As always, I don’t like extinctions. Nothing has gone completely extinct and can be revived with a good enough excuse. But for now anything that is not one of the pictured species will have considerable difficulty adapting to this new environment

On the northernmost continent, a badly malfunctioning coolant system activated during Terraforma maintains a constant storm of freezing chemicals. Only a portion of this continent is actually ruin, the majority is one solid mass of chemical ice. Thermal vents beneath the surface create geysers of boiling gas somewhat frequently.

Ecosystem
Mammoth-Tank
Diet: [OIL]
>The largest terrestrial animal on the planet, the cold conditions allow it to maintain it’s huge body without threat of overheating. Travel flatlands on tank-like treads.
>Use a long, sharp tongue to pierce the ice at it’s thinnest and draw oil from the polluted ocean beneath
>An internal system recycles the trace amounts of ice- not water, but an element known as Cryotheum- in it’s diet as a defense mechanism, firing freezing chemicals from it’s cannon capable of temporarily slowing or immobilizing the superheated Phoenix-Devil
>A significantly more tame strain of the Plague of Flesh still exists in it’s genetic code. It’s lower body is protected by a thick leathery hide of bristles, designed for both insolation, and an extra line of defense against predators.

Phoenix-Devil
Diet: [SCRAP]
>Small pack predators with permanently and severely overclocked systems. The amount of heat it naturally produces is tremendous.
>Hunt Mammoth-Tanks for their large amounts of [SCRAP] and stores of Cryotheum
>Cycles Cryotheum from Mammoth-Tanks into an internal cooling system that keeps them from melting outright.
>May vent a sudden excess of heat to produce ‘jump jets’, propelling them great distances.

Psycho-Butterfly
Diet: [CODE]
>Descendants of several lines of Psychovores, forcibly amalgamated by the automated system. Feed on [CODE]; the alien energy controlling the AMs, via it’s silver proboscis.
>The bristles on it’s wings are slightly morphic, allowing them to reshape them into other useful configurations.
>The codebank on it’s back helps generate constant lift via slight electromagnetism.
>Their bodies naturally produce gaseous cryotheum. The beating of their wings can frost over potential prey, slowing or immobilizing them.

Balloon-Gardens
Diet: Sunlight, thermal and cryotheuic gasses
>Begin life as a terrestrial “polyp”, extracting as much Cryotheum from the ice as possible in preparation for adulthood.
>On maturity, they break down their stores of Cryotheum into a heated gas that inflates their balloon. They will spend their lives hopping from vent to vent to keep themselves afloat. Sniffing out thermal gasses with it’s flowerlike sensor

Para-spiders
Diet: [CODE], [SCRAP]
>Forcibly amalgamated from several species. Amphibious, they form colonies on land and underwater.
>The structure on their back is actually an assimilated strain of degenerated psychovores. The crystalline structure acts as a deceptively large database.
>Bores into organisms with it’s crystalline drill to extract [CODE] and [SCRAP]. It’s preferred prey being the massive Mammoth-Tanks who are too large to detect their presence. They also tend to colonize the various species of “Structure Cell” derivatives to feed on their unused [CODE] stores.
>One of the most intelligent species on the planet. Capable of social bonds and pack behavior.

Sea
(There’s a lot more in the sea, and not necessarily in other regions. But it took this long to make this much, so give me time and I’ll add them with the next region)

Atlas-Stars
Diet: Sunlight, [CODE]
>The largest “living” creature on the planet. The result of several forcibly amalgamated lines of Oilspouts.
>Constantly produce a huge amount of [OIL] as they drift on the tide.
>It’s barnacle-like growths are a degenerated strain of parasitic psychovore. Deceptively predatory, as large schools of siphons are drawn to the oil they produce, these growths harvest a portion of [CODE] from them.
>Their solar-star that floats above them is powered by a massive database of [CODE]. It collects energy from sunlight, and may also periodically produce rays of [CODE], harmful to psychovorous predators.

Ballistic-Scrubber
Diet: [Scrap], [OIL]
>Amalgamated from several lines of Siphon
>They trail large [OIL] sources like Light Houses and Atlas-Stars
>They can empty the “stomachs” on their back to fire superheated [OIL]. They will use this use this to lance off psychovourous parasites from larger Spouts, and eat them with their grinder mouthes before they can recover from the shock.
>Frequent Oil Reefs, but don’t get along with colonial siphons. Sometimes they’re ignored for the sake of cleaning up the psychovore carcasses left behind, sometimes they wind up eating a siphon and getting torn to ribbons by lasers.

Mother-Ray
Diet: [OIL]
>The second largest species on the planet. Typically found among schools of colonial siphons and motherships.
>The “hangar” in the upper portion of their body provides shelter to Motherships and Siphons alike during long migrations
>Require a huge amount of [OIL] to remain functional, and need to travel from reef to reef almost daily to keep themselves fed.
>Unlike the more intelligent Motherships, Mother-Rays are borderline mindless. They merely exist as a migratory hive for the siphon schools. Mothership [CODE] is what tells them where to go and when.

During intial construction of these new machines, a momentary glitch hit the automated repair systems and generated a few variants of each species.

1. ParaForm: Hyperagressive with twin drills, there is little difference between its progenitor form and the base model. beyond a small group vs large group hunting strategy.

2. HeloBlades: A variation of the garden, these entities use primitive stereoscopic sensors embedded into their float sacks, and a central bearing which enables the solar collectors to rotate at high speeds, the edge of the collectors is bladed. So is their snout. They might be a bit more predatory than they let on.

The Psycho-Wasps have developed an interesting reproductive strategy. Occasionally, instead of sucking all of the [CODE] out of a Mammoth Tank, the wasp will instead inject it with extra [CODE], effectively reprogramming the AM. A Mammoth Tank altered in this way will immediately make its way to the highest, windiest point nearby. It then encases itself in Cryotheum and devotes all of its resources to constructing a new Psycho-Wasp. When fully formed, the juvenile wasp breaks free of the now empty husk and takes off in search of new prey.

The Heliopop is a mostly harmless entity that is made entirely of inflatable, disposable, non metallic, robotic components. It exists simply by absorbing a mild amount of electrical charge from other machines and carries nothing but a small amount of [CODE].

Capable of reproducing in great numbers, they can be spotted floating in the sky, floating on the surface of the ocean, or simply wandering about on land. They are everywhere.

The only risk is if enough helipops congregate on an electrically weak entity, they may drain it entirely, or leave it too feeble to fend off forms of predation.

Mammoth tanks downsize their bodies further in order to avoid predators. To compensate for lack of storage, their cryotheum is now stored in a detachable tank contained in their rear.

When a predator comes for their precious cryotheum, the Mammoth tanks can detach their cryotheum tanks for a quick getaway.

The Skimmers are Psycho-Wasps that have replaced much of their bristles for an extra pair of maglev wings. Their flight is low altittude but high speed, quickly hovering through the icy landscapes looking for prey.

Their bristles have lost their fake-eye configuration, instead having a new searchlight config. with multiple incredibly bright spots that allow it to hunt at night.

The Psychofly has faced fierce competition from other descendants of the Psycho Butterfly in it's niche, and rather than attempt to keep up it has instead found a different calling. Their bodies are now greatly downsized and simplified, more similar to those of their ancestors, and they have begun using swarm tactics to attack prey instead of being solitary predators.
Both cryotheum production and the ability to alter the code of their bodyparts have been lost entirely, not even a trace of either remaining in their genetics, caused both by the high energy intensiveness of those processes and by their potential to disrupt the experiment, which the [SOURCE CODE] cannot allow.

After cycles of predation, the mammoth tank upgrades itself; complex rear leg articulation is replaced with a simple unpowered independent rear wheel setup. Reduction of stored cryotherm in the primary body has reduced the supercooling effect and also made the main body less of a target. Lastly obsolent tusks have been replaced with multi tool tentacles. for nightmare reasons. Being outcompeted by a sea bug? Mammoth aint got no time for that.

threads about halfway down the catalog man. Opening up new paths of creation isint too bad for organisms not being overly touched. The progenitor species are still there.
>>
>>3161993
Damn, I did that wrong. To make myself clear, it's not just those two posts,I feel that there's a lot of radical change happening here, with people doing two or three changes at once and ending up with completely different creatures than the beginning. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like that kills a lot of the coolest aspect of the game, where we end up with a completely different creature, and can trace it's evolution all the way back through successive changes, each individual one small, but together ending up with something unique.
>>
>>3162011
You make a valid point, and one that I don't really have an answer for, especially given how few people are contributing, which makes it hard to justify small changes. I just feel like we're trading one of the funner aspects of the game for the cool stuff now.

The Hairless-Tanks replace their treads with better snow-suited skates, and stronger rear legs. This allows them to move quicker while spending less energy.

The Land-Scrubbers have developed stronger legs, and a specialized mouth that allows it to quickly shred abandoned carcasses. This has made them the #1 carrion feeder on the artic landscapes.

Among the tanks that kept their larger form, some grew inordinately powerful hind legs. Useful for pushing their treads through packed ice, and keeping their bodies stable while probing for oil. The increased strength in these hind legs also allow for these tanks to lift their heavy bodies off the ground, in a show of intimidation to deter predators.
(Their bodies probably wouldn't stay hilariously level while lifting themselves up, I just couldn't be assed to redraw the entire thing at a different angle)

>>3160679
As suggested by the fact that nobody's doing it, no. The plague has been stemmed, but not completely eradicated. Creatures with fleshy bits keep and pass them down, and the actual bio-organisms themselves still exist. They've just been set back hard enough by the event that they're not currently infectious.

>>3161993
I gotta agree that there's a couple that have been huge changes too fast, namely the fly, jellyfish, and necromancer machines. But like he said, it's not like the thread's particularly active, so jumping ahead a little bit for the sake of something actually happening is harmless. I'm fine with a few major changes like that as long as it doesn't become the new norm. And the fact that it seems like there's a pretty consistent number of players means the people involved have no problem handling it.

All that said, if there's anyone lurking that's too put off by the amount of change or detail to contribute, speak up. I want to do what I can to avoid that sort of thing.

A species of Psycho-Butterfly develops a bristle configuration more apt to terrestrial life. previously the butterfly needed to be completely motionless to conserve energy, resting on it's tripod legs and flying to move. But with this advancement it can instead simply walk about, slowly meandering across the icy plains. It tends to spend much more time in this form throughout it's life. Only taking to the air to travel great distances or while chasing prey.

The Wooly Megatron is an ambush predator, laying in wait near [OIL] hotspots in wait for Mammoth-tanks, the only creatures in the ecosystem capable of providing the biological chemicals the Megatrons need for survival. To avoid setting off any alarms, the Wooly Megatron is covered in a luxurious white coat of fur, which acts not only as a convincing snow-themed disguise but also as a sort of external lung and a heat retention organ. When in wait, the Megatron may lay motionless for hours on end, yet when the coast is clear it assumes a more upright position, shivering feverishly in order to warm it's temperature-sensitive organic components up.
While the cold augments the mechanical components of the creature, it also damages it's biological components, while heat does the opposite. This makes it impossible for the Wooly Megatron to find a truly comfortable temperature, leaving it feeling either too cold or too hot and the coolant canals in it's proboscis constantly leaking a thick, goopy substance.
