General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.
Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the the PTU system, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves and also may leave you open to an interrupt, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Pokemon and trainers are unique, and may have certain specializations, skills, or other things that the video-game mechanics might not allow. Some examples: That kung fu Bellsprout in the anime, that crystal Onix, or a Roggenrolla that can fly. Herb's perception skills, pokemon knowledge, context clues in general, and other things will hopefully come into play to avoid completely unfair, unforeseeable bullshit, but expect more bullshit from more advanced trainers.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

Pokemon:
Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roserade)
Dice (Feraligatr)
Sorbet (Vulpix)
Ghost Pepper (Rotom)

Location: The woods just outside of Terichi, the city of nightlife!

Recently: Herb and Polu have a friendly battle (Thanks again archiver!)

So, I’ve been thinking strategy.

We’ve underused Final Gambit (and chip away) much lately.

I think we can finish off Bulbasaur with Final Gambit. We just need to use three moves first to bring it online.

I say we start off by sending Gobble out with some distance between them, maybe behind a tree, and buff up with Amnesia. It’s a decent strat by itself, which will disguise the larger strategy.

Then, we close the distance with Tackle or Surf.

Then, we use Recycle. It will fail, and since it takes no time to do nothing, we can immediately follow up with Final Gambit on the same “turn”.

Stab and the silk scarf will boost the power of the move over 330.

Sorry, I was calling “Last Resort” “Final Gambit”.

You consider who to send out for a moment in your battle with Polu in the heavily wooded forest.

“Go Gobble, you’re back up!”

Gobble nods, then runs onto the field. While he takes a ready fighting stance, he doesn’t seem to be taking this new fight as seriously. Bulbasaur looks pretty hurt, after all, while Gobble hasn’t taken serious damage yet. He sees this as a foregone conclusion, and maybe even a chance to show off a little. Gobble isn’t the type to want to humiliate his opponent or anything, but he does like positive attention and being noticed.

He looks back to you to see how you feel about things. The look on your face conveys...

>That he’s right. Now’s the chance to really take chances and try fancier stuff. Maybe we’ll learn something
>That you’re just here to have a fun battle. Whatever happens, happens
>Seriousness. Underestimating opponents and disregarding the fundamentals is always a bad idea
>Concern for Bulbasaur and it’s feelings. Let’s finish this, but go a bit easy on Polu’s last pokemon

>Seriousness. Underestimating opponents and disregarding the fundamentals is always a bad idea

We had a whole moment with Mace a while back about how we didn’t want to succeed due to being underestimated. Now that we’re on the other side of it, we should be aware of how it can feel condescending to be gone easy on.

Plus, if Bulbasaur really had no chance, Polu would have thrown in the towel. He’s not one to just fodder his Pokémon needlessly.

Your facial expression has a bit of a journey as it travels alongside your internal thoughts. You’re smiling because, well, you’re just here to have a good time. You aren’t as concerned about the details as long as it’s a battle where everyone enjoys themselves. That’s what it’s all about, right? Sure, some pokemon have a different idea of what makes their particular battle satisfying, like pushing themselves hard or coming up with a way to turn things around, and -

Hmm, Bulbasaur seems to have that sort of look on his face. He’s pressed and in a desperate situation, but his expression looks thrilled. Your facial expression must have changed, because Gobble’s does as you think that. He nods, and puts up his dukes while turning back to Bulbasaur. He’s going to have fun, but he’s not going try his best, too.

Bulbasaur seems to have read something in Polu’s expression too, because he throws his vines into a tall tree and starts rapidly pulling himself up the branches.

Wow, he can get up there pretty fast.

“Gobble, Amnesia!” You command. Gobble doesn’t hesitate to forget.

While he’s busy with that, you keep a close eye on Bulbasaur as he climbs up that tree. Finally, once he’s gotten way up there, Polu issues a new command. “Synthesis!”

You hear a few surprised comments from the girls watching, and one distinctly unlady-like cheer from the psychic girl that likes Polu. “Yeah!” She’s really had a big change since last night.

Even Jane looks impressed. “Getting above the canopy to get more sunlight. And teaching Bulbasaur such an advanced move for it. You might not be a hopeless cause after all.”

“Careful. That almost sounded like a compliment.” Polu smiles before turning his attention back to the field. “Gobble’s going to be hard to deal with here, though. Smart move, bro.”

Gobble squints up at the general direction Bulbasaur climbed up, keeping ready. The Grass type Pokemon blends in a little when he’s not moving. He weighs enough that his position is given away by the drop in the branch if he moves, though.

Both Pokemon have quite a bit of distance between them.

“Growth, Bulbasaur!” Polu commands to the small Grass type pokemon up in the trees. Uh oh. If he’s up there collecting sunlight, that could be trouble.

“Chip Away that tree, Gobble! Knock Bulbasaur out of it!”

Gobble takes off in a sprint towards the base of the tree with energies gather around on of the branches. He delivers a rapid flurry of swipes, punches, and strikes to the base of the tree. While bark flies as if made of paper, the shaking and wobbling of the tree isn’t enough to shake Bulbasaur out of it. Not even close.

Wait, isn’t bark made of paper?

You shrug off the thought and focus. Bulbasaur is balance on a waving branch, going up and down and needing to hold on a bit instead of just stand on it, especially when he reaches the apex of his height. It’s not like he’s stuck to it, though. It's just a bit harder to use the full breadth of his balance up there.

“Gobble, use Recycle.” You instruct while Polu shouts something to Bulbasaur.

He glances back, confused. H even has to flick his Silk Scarf out of the way so he can make eye contact. You notice Jane unfold her arms out of the corner of your vision. The other eyes on you that you can’t see still feel heavy.

“Just trust me.”

Gobble nods. He does trust you, but you guess he didn’t trust his own ears. He turns back, but he’s suddenly under a massive storm of dark, sharp objects!

“Gobble!”

“Great Razor Leaf!” Polu shouts as the sharp green, almost laser-like projectiles come down on poor Gobble. He covers his face with one arm and uses Recycle despite the intense punishment. You can see him twitch in pain, and know this attack must be devastating to him. If he didn’t have faith in you, and wasn’t as tough, this might not work.

“Alright! Now quickly, Last Resort.”

His posture immediately changes. You can almost see his aura explode. He throws his fists up, and from them launches a brilliant, energy-crackling star of light. It flies at incredible speed and crashes through the tree branches. The explosion of wood and dispersal of leaves in it’s wake form an almost beautiful picture of absolute destruction.

The splinters fly close enough to almost hit the Psychic girls and Jane on one side, and the other girls on the other, but a combination of Jane’s quick thinking with her Fletchfinder disintegrating the splinters, and Gardevoir’s psychic protective shield ensure everyone is safe from any stray wood that might hit anybody.

It takes you a second to realize that Bulbasaur is flying through the air, clearly out.

Polu tries to use his Pokeball to retrieve him, but the overhead canopy is too thick for it’s beam to get through.

“Ghost Pepper. Stay as low as you can, and as soon as Bulbasaur is as high as he can go, use Ally Switch.”

Polu, who was looking very worried, has calmed down to only incredibly tense. Ghost Pepper watches closely, then tries to use Ally Switch, but it doesn’t work.

“Quick! Get higher!” Polu shouts. Ghost Pepper quickly complies. You notice that Pepper doesn’t even hesitate regardless of who the order comes from. Most pokemon will make sure their trainer approves first.

Ghost Pepper flies up high, positions itself right over a thick branch, and then uses it again. Bulbasaur by this time had built a little speed, but not enough for the landing to look like it did any further damage.

“Bulbasaur!” Polu retrieves him, then releases himself back onto the ground to check his health. He sighs and relaxes fully. “He’s alright.”

The small little Bulbasaur breathes easily, making a cute little noise with each exhale. You’d think he was napping if you couldn’t see the evidence of the battle a moment ago.

“Pretty impressive stuff, bro. You’ve gotten strong, Gobble!” He ruffles Gobble’s head.

We should ask Ghost Pepper why he listened to Polu just as readily as us. It's not something even wild pokemon do when captured. Don't blame him, just ask his reasons, maybe asking Gardevoir for help translating if needed.

“Good job, Pepper.” You say quickly as Polu takes your hand for a strong shake.

“You too, bro.”

He’s missed you a lot.

Jane is the closest and comes to you guys first.

“Gobble’s gotten very strong.” Jane tells you in a tone that somehow sounds like anything but a compliment, despite the words. “And you’ve become a lot less reactionary as a trainer. You’re taking more initiative. You’re not just creative because you get stuck in a mess. You’re planning ahead, now.”

Wow. Wow! The more she talked the more her tone changed to the closest thing she has to cheerful.

“What about me?” Polu asks.

“I’ve got a lot of notes.” Jane approaches Polu. “But not all of them criticisms.”

Polu brightens up from his already bright demeanor. “Alright!” He gives you a high five, then goes to give Jane one.

Naturally, her hand doesn’t move.

“Come on. You’re leaving me hanging.”

She glances up at a tall tree branch. “I’m considering it.”

Polu just laughs in response. When she rolls her eyes and makes a gesture to wave off his laughter, he catches her hand in a quick surprise five.

“Polu!” The girl runs up, her bright enthusiasm beams in contrast even to the fairly excited giggles of the other psychic girls follow close behind her. “Great match! That was so exciting!”

The other girls come up now too. You’re planning to ask Keira and Abigail for help in healing the pokemon, but you’ve got a quick question first.

“Ghost Pepper, how come you were so ready to listen to Polu?”

The buzzing Rotom stops in mid air, then lowers itself and looks down in submission.

“I’m sorry! I’m the worst!” Keira translates without being asks. Her voice loses it’s sparkle. “Please don’t send me away... I’ll do better.”

The group begins to stop talking amongst itself to listen. Keira’s translations are drawing attention.

“It’s okay! Really. You’re not in trouble, I just wanted to know. You did a great job.”

Ghost Pepper looks up at you slowly.

“You were quick and saved the day. You’re a pretty awesome pokemon!” You start to pile it on. It doesn’t take much to completely change Pepper’s mood. “I’ll want to ask some questions later though.” You say with concern in your voice as it buzzes around and out of reach. It seems to want to ‘lock in’ the praise and vanish out of sight before you can change your mind.

You and Keira exchange a look, but there’s not much more to do right now.

After some pats on the back from Hana and Laki about the match, you put your attention and Kiera and Abigail, and pitch the idea of using Abigail’s energy to help you try to heal the pokemon. Keira understands instantly, but you have to explain to Abigail a bit more before she gets it.

“So you want me to be you battery, huh?” Abigail asks sarcastically.

“That’s a great analogy!” Keira misses the sarcasm.

“Alright. I’m game.” Abigail says. “I’m starting to get into this aura stuff. Especially if I’m apparently so awesome at it.”

“Humility is a key part of being able to focus your aura.” Jane tells her.

Abigail looks like she wants to make a remark at Jane, but changes her mind, only saying “‘That so?”

“I think we should be able to do this as long as we’re able to concentrate.” Keira says. “I can be your guide, if you’d like.”

Abigail hesitates. “That won’t mean you’re snooping around in my head, will it? I already had a talk with them.” She gestures to the Psychics.

“Well, not in your head, no, but...”

“Effectively yes.” Laki tells her.

“Only if I need to correct certain flows of energy.” Kiera adds on.

Abigail hesitates a little. You guess she isn’t as trusting of Keira as she is of you.

“Maybe Laki can help.” You suggest.

“Me?” Laki points to herself as she tunes into the conversation.

“Well, if it’s alright with you.” You add on. “That helps, right Keira? Someone you’re in sync with to help anchor you?”

“In sync with her?” Abbigail and Laki sarcastically ask at almost the exact same time. Both make different faces in reaction, though. Especially when Jane lets out an uncharacteristic muffled laugh.

“I can be helpful too!” Keira says, sounding disappointed. It only lasts for a moment before she forces herself to deal with it. “But, I suppose it is the most helpful if I let you handle it. Ask me if you need any advice.” She humbly steps back. “Oh! This is actually a good chance for me to ask you some questions, Hana.” She quickly cheers up and takes Hana aside. You’re not sure what they’re talking about, but it seems to shock and elate Hana a lot.

“Alright, Soft Hands. This is your thing. What do we do?”

You take Abigail and Laki’s hands, and get into a circle. Gobble volunteers to be the first pokemon. You know Gobble isn’t the type to put himself first. He must be doing it just in case there’s a risk of something going wrong.

But you doubt anything will. Not because of hubris, but because you’ve made very sure through careful introspection to be able to mitigate that sort of thing.

Well, you admire the gesture anyway.

“So, what do we do?” Laki asks.

“Your job will be to help focus Abigail while I try to drain some of her energy.” You feel that’s right. “You’ll need to provide something she can concentrate on to keep her aura...stable.”

“Like what?” Laki seems pretty unsure of her ability to help.

It might not be the best way to get her to open up EMOTIONALLY, but something that will help us get to know her better and keep her aura stable at the same time would be to just ask her questions from somewhere out of her line of sight. Simple ones, like if she has a middle name, her favorite color, the kind of weather she likes the most.
>>
“I can do happy.” Laki says. “What? Shut, Abigail. I’ll clobber happiness into that thick skull of yours if I have to.”

Abigail laughs, and Laki laughs.

Laki gets comfortable, closes her eyes, and concentrates. So does Abigail. The sounds of the others standing around and chatting not too far off is distracting, but either you’re all learning to tune that out, or someone got the group away so you can concentrate under the sounds of the woods and the winds.

Slowly, the feeling of familiar energies come to you. A brilliant spot in the grey aether can be seen, and you use that to guide your way. It’s surprisingly easy so far. You’re able to tap into Abigails excess stores of aura energy, and use that to heal Gobble’s wounds. You’re able to dip out quickly enough to have another pokemon join into the circle for healing. With each one, it becomes easier.

It’s an odd feeling. You feel the energy flowing in and out, but it’s not yours. It’s like moving an arm you can’t feel.

You focus your attention on the shining light. The energy you’re able to gather and use isn’t much right now, but maybe you could do more if you just tweak a few things. Abigail is an absolute powerhouse.

And you’re also a bit curious as to what they’re sharing that’s making things go so smoothly.

Man, we beat his 4 with 3 of ours. I do still wish we could have gotten more tips though.

You know... I wonder if we should take Pepper to a move deleter? Assuring it that we will treat it right by making it forget Frustration could be productive. But that’s mostly assuming it’s trainer forced it to learn it, rather than learning it itself as a defense mechanism.

Gobble seems to have brought in Sorbet to be healed next. He’s always taking the initiative to help out. You don’t even have to open your eyes to feel it, either. Their auras have become familiar to you. You’re easily able to focus the healing energy you need to fix her up. It helps that pokemon battles don’t really result in anything too complicated or serious.

You’re curious. What sort of secret does Abigail have to be such a powerhouse of aura energy?

You let your attention focus in on Abigail. Not on where her focus is, which is all around Laki, but on the core of Abigail. The swirling rivers of differently coloured energies all around her. You inspect closer. Nothing about her seems that out of place. Of course, you’re still not sure what out of place would even be. Everyone has a unique aura.

You investigate a little more. The one thing that does eventually stick out to you is how free flowing the energy is. There’s very little restriction or hesitation when it changes directions.

That’s neat, but it doesn’t quite answer your curiosity. Does Abigail’s big stores of aura energy have something to do with how easily it flows within her, or is that just a different thing she’s good at? Learning could go a long way to mastering your own aura powers.

You decide to play around a bit. Nothing big of course, but just a little to get a better understanding. You keep an eye on things where Laki and Abigail’s focus are. You don’t have any insight into the specifics, but you make sure you’re aware of any big changes so you know you don’t push things too far.

First you just splash a little bit here and there. Nothing big, but you want to see how the larger structure of rivers of energy react. You do a little more, blocking one section for a second and seeing how it reforms, or taking a bit and mixing it around. Nothing that can get too out of control.

Not wanting to push too hard, you leave it at that. You’ve been watching as you play around, and noticed a few things.

The first, is that Abigail’s entire system reacts almost instantly. Second, is that you thought there was nothing noticeable about her aura, but by playing with it you’ve learned there’s no ‘pooling’ sections either.

If you take what you’ve learned from others, you think Abigail just hesitates a lot less than most people. She’s more ‘in the moment.’ She just lets it all flow freely, and in doing so, loses so much less energy starting and stopping the flow of her emotions and aura.

Wow! This has been really helpful! You don't know about making yourself less self-conscious, but you do think you might be able to use this as a general lesson in aura mastery.

The last pokemon receives it’s healing. You’re all done.

Huh. There’s something a little weird over there. Something in Abigail’s aura. Like a polished stone in a river. You’d have to reach in and take it out to inspect it.

Well, you think you’re done here. You decide not to snoop around. You’ve been shown a great deal of trust, after all. You do want to get Abigail and Keira’s input on this, though.

With some blinking and a flood of noises coming into your perception, you’re awake. The girl’s quickly follow.

“We’re all set, then?” Abigail asks, stretching.

You push yourself up. You’re used to feeling pretty drained after doing so much healing, but you feel just as energetic as before. Moreso, even. “Yup!”

“Well, alright then!” Abigail says looking over yours and Polu’s pokemon and watching Polu toss his Bulbasaur up into the air. “This feels nice.”

“Not too tired?” Laki asks.

Abigail gets up. She moves around a bit to check her muscle strength out. “Huh. I am pretty tired. But good! You do this all the time, huh Herb?” Her eyes look over your with gentle, motherly concern, and a little pride.

Herb? Usually she calls you Goldentop or some other nickname. “It’s no big deal.” You start to think about what’s next. That festival is coming up. You did promise some of your pokemon that you’d try a bit of contest stuff.

Laki slaps you on the back. “You would be so humble. You know, it’s weird how you’re so unlike other guys.” That last part just sort of slips out.

Not like other guys? How? Is she saying you’re not masculine? Was that a compliment or a jab? She looks like she didn’t mean to say it. That can’t be good.

“What did you mean by that?” Your voice comes out sounding more harsh and defensive than you intended. But maybe it’s better to just be more assertive. More aggressive. To be bigger and scarier than the things that scare you.

You shake your head. Jeez. It was just a little intonation. You’re overthinking things.

“Hey, it’s alright.” Abigail says in a soothing tone. “You’re a big strong guy.”

“Yeah.” Laki adds in. “Relax, big guy. I just meant that you’re humble. You’re not obsessed with looking tough or puffing your chest or trying to impress anyone. Lots of boys your age are trying to put on a big show and act like men. You don’t. You’re just...Soft Hands. It’s cute.” She almost stops there. “But in a sexy, admirable way.”

“Oh.” You feel a bit foolish. “Thanks. Umm, what were you two focusing on, anyway?”

The two girls exchange a look. “I think that’s private.”

“Come on, tell me!”

“Aww, let’s tell him.” Abigail says with some laughing pity.

“Where’s the fun in that?” Laki smirks. “That’s for us to know and you to find out.”

“But...”

“Maybe later.” Laki says, laughing a little to herself. “If I’m in the mood.”

“Hey, guys.” You get their attention and point out Gobble, who has Mace in the world’s most pointless headlock.

The realization of what happened sets in. “It’s not like I do that all the time.” Laki looks embarrassed as Abigail laughs.

Laki and Abigail leave you. The more they bond, the more worried you think you should be sometimes.

You and the others start cleaning up the camp. You can’t just stay out here all day, unfortunately.

“Thank you for chaperoning us.” One of the psychic girls tells Keira.

Keira glances over at the one sticking right by Polu’s side. “I...don’t know if I did such a good job. But I suppose if everyone’s happy, that’s all that matters.”

“You have an unusual attitude for a priestess.” One of the others tells her. “You’re so much less concerned about decorum.”

Keira spots you and drags you closer. “I’ve got someone very wise to tank for that.”

“Eh, I don’t know about that. Your journey has been your own, and you’ve always been an open minded, free spirited person. You don’t let any one person make up your mind for you, either. You’re independent.”

Keira smiles.

“So, is... she going to get in trouble?” You feel embarrassed at not having caught anyone’s name.

“Yes.” One says bluntly. ”But she knew that.”

“Yes.” Another adds in. “We’ll have to do many extra chores.”

“Aren’t you upset about that?” Your mouth asks before your brain registered the sentence. Not that it’s a bad question, but you feel just a little more pushy than usual.

“No.”

“No.” The first adds in.

“A little.” A third says. “But we’re a collective. Sisters. She would sacrifice equally for us. And what she’s shared of the experience is...interesting to understand from the perspective of one of our own. However, I understand more now why our teachings are so stern on interacting with boys.” She looks you up and down. “Even conversing with you is an unusual experience. Not something we should be engaging in unless it’s necessary.”

“Oh, uh, sorry.” you say.

She smiles. “We’re already in trouble. I believe the mainland saying is to be in for a penny, in for a kilogram.”

“Close enough.” You’re not sure how you feel about that attitude, but it’s their choice, you suppose.

“Umm, this is embarrassing, but I don’t think I got your names.”

She seems confused at that, but they all introduce themselves. You make a mental note of each one in case you meet again. “We don’t normally care about such things, among ourselves.” She explains after as they get their bags together.

Keira prepares her bag too. “I’ll need to escort them back. And make some preparations and inform some people about my role change.” She leans in close with an embarrassed look. “The festival is going on today. Should I meet you there? I’ll need to be there for the last day.”

“Umm, yeah.” It’s beating pretty hard.

“See you at the festival!” She says excitedly as she chases after the psychic girls.

“Yes, we should get going too.” Jane says as she throws Polu’s bag at him. “It’ll be good for you to train without distractions.”

“Haleewai will expect me back. He’ll look for me in a few days.”

“Then we’ll need to train that much harder.” Jane says. “You can celebrate winning your bandanna back on the last day of the festival.”

“I’m looking forward to the last day of the festival.” Hana says as she watches Keira head off. What a strange tone she has.

“So what now?” Abigail yawns. You suppose the healing took a bit out of her.

I want to make a name for ourselves, but the gym is probably the least time-sensitive thing here, so we can probably do it after everything else. I wouldn't say no to taking a day off and enjoying ourselves either, though.
>>
So, I want to take a moment to relflect on the significance of our recent progress.

Being able to use aura from another person to do healing is going to remove our hard limit, which is amazing. Abi’s aura is absolutely worth exploring in more depth later on, but Wailord and eventually Snorlax-Gobble are great sources of vital energy as well. Once we’ve seen enough auras to be able to connect well to unfamiliar auras, we’ll be able to do a ton of healing at once, by using the loved ones of the injured as aura donors.

More than that, I’d like to see Herb use this ability to do potential unlocking. I see the technique as a way to skip over the training process for certain things that the Pokémon could do if they worked at it. I’d like to help our girls unlock some of their pokemon’s potentials. I also wonder if, like healing, the technique also works on humans. Humans are basically weird Pokémon, so it should, I think. We should explore it.

Beating Polu 3-4 is very indicative of our progress in battling. There’s a lot we can do there still, especially for Mace. I hope he’s not too upset about “losing” to Aggron, since he fought through most of Volcarona to get to him, then almost finished him too.

For this next gym, I’d really like to battle alongside Abi. We haven’t done so yet, and growing closer to her just straight-up improves the healing power of our party. Plus, I love vivallion, and if we focus, we might get enough badges in time to challenge the league. I’m hoping we can beat 1 or 2 of the E4.

Also, Gobble is the only one with a fashion item on lockdown. Bella doesn’t want one since she thinks her petals should be enough, but her held item is already top-tier. That leaves the other 4 open to items. I bet Mace could get something like the intimidate ability with a cape and pauldrons. Not sure what Dice, Sorbet, or Pepper would like/find useful/look good with.
>>
“Well, first thing I want to do is find the local gym.” You announce, feeling unusually aggressive at the moment. Aggressive and without the usual concerns about what people think. You’re not defiant of expectations of others, they’re just not part of the equation when deciding to act at all.

“I also want to try practicing somehow for the contest show.” You say while you’re thinking about it. Belladonna lights up

“The gym, huh?” Hana says. “That could be fun. I’m starting to like battling.”

“Did you want to try for another badge?”

She hesitates. “Maybe. I’d rather take on one of the students, though. I feel like that would be better for my pokemon right now.”

“Why?” Laki asks, curiously. “You’re not a bad battler.”

“Really? Oh, thanks Laki! But the students aren’t bad either, and they’re way more concerned about winning than assessing you as a trainer. I think that’s what I need to face more of right now. I’m not really trying to make it into the league, so it doesn’t matter if I get a badge or not.”

“Wow.” Abigail says. “Look who’s becoming a serious warrior-trainer.”

Hana looks down. “Psh, yeah right. No thanks. I’m not the stoic type. Plus the other reason is that I get all distracted by the pressure of a badge or something on the line.”

“Well, I’m going for a badge.” Laki says. “I think it’ll look good on this shirt.”

“What kind of gym is it, anyway?”

“Dark type.” Abigail answers.

You feel excitement building up. You think if you go now, you'll have a unique take on the on-the-fly problem solving that you need during a fight. Notice things you wouldn't before, and have the right attitude for new things. But then again, you haven't unlocked the potential of all your pokemon, and you can also always do more general trianing

She’s quickly grabbed by Abigail. “Good. You’re free. Let’s practice.”

“Eeeeeeep!” Hana lets out as she’s dragged off. She and Abigail quickly get into it. You even notice them encouraging Cubone to join in the light-contact sparring. Gardevoir watches from the far off sideline.

“What do you think about Gardevoir?” Laki slices up some tomatoes for you.

Ultimate goal is help her get better, but if Just ok is all she can get then that's ok. Its better then her being alone and scared, scaring everyone around her by accident. plus shes pretty.

I don't necessarily want to place her in an institution like that, but I would be interested in learning if there are specific techniques to help her improve, and that would be the place to learn those techniques, if any.

“They said to keep doing what we’re doing.”

“But what if it doesn’t work?”

“I want to do whatever I can to help her, and if improving her condition isn’t something I can do, well, then, I don’t mind looking after her like this. It’s not so bad. It’s better than her being alone and scared, scaring everyone around her by accident.”

You feel a soft embrace from behind. “Good answer. I’m glad you don’t abandon your responsibilities when they become inconvenient.” She holds you for a pretty long time before breaking it and going back to the food. “And it’s we.” She corrects.

“Huh?”

“You kept saying ‘I.’ We’re in this together. Thick and thin.”

You squeeze her hand, then go back to the food. You’re about to add another dash of spices, but Gobble stops your hand.

“Do you think it’s too much?” You ask.

He takes a small sample for a taste test, then allows you to continue after some reflection.

“Glad you approve.” Laki laughs as she ruffles his head. “Getting a bit cocky about your skills, aren’t you Gobble?”

He isn’t sure if he should be offended. He looks satisfied when Laki tries a small bit and makes a very delighted sound, though.

“Dish up!” You announce to everyone. The meal is well received. It’s light, fresh, and zesty. You feel light on your feet and ready to battle.

Ghost Pepper plays with the food a bit, annoying Gobble. But eventually the ghost eats and approves, which let’s Gobble relax

Cubone takes a plate to Dice, who eagerly and without a hint of hesitation scarfs it down. They seem to be getting along well. Sorbet seems pretty unnerved by the constantly buzzing Ghost Pepper though. It flies too close and too fast near her in it’s curiosity, and she likes her space.

Laki nudges you again. “So what about Cubone? Eventually something’s going to happen with her. Someone might try to catch her. Were you considering taking her on? She's losing her wild edge.”

I love the little guy, and as Hana said "its we" so its not like we would be trading him away.

That said Im not voting to hand lil'pep to her right now, but if our roster make-up needs a change or some thematic reason thats a trade I'm totaly down for. especially to avoid PCing any of our pokemon.
>>
>>3160620
That's just it, I don't NOT like Pepper. Peppy little troublemaker that's just looking to have some fun, I like that. Herb can definitely train with and help direct that energy into something constructive or fun for everyone! I just think Cubone's a better fit and I'd like to see their relationship grow. It's not some secret that most of our attention's on OUR pokemon, it'd be extremely tiring for Gobble to write out every single pokemon's interactions and I'd just prefer having the "Camera" on Cubone more often.

Also

Honestly?

>Why can't we just keep trading them

Like, is there some rule that says we have a limit on trades? What's stopping couples from swapping pokemon day to day?

>>3160638
There doesn't need to be a trade then, we can just borrow eachother's pokemon like Kat did a couple of times with vance and robin.

>>3160643
Presumably it's because unlike the games the mon presented here are sentient beings that have feelings?
>>
>>3160643
there isn't, but its also kind of unnecessary with our style of training. If we want to have fun with power fist Hana theres nothing stopping it. Plus shes had so much less fun with the thing since her mom fixed it.

Its been forever but I'm also remembering something from the show where there was a couple that had the gimmick of battling using a single set of pokemon, but that might have been a fan fic.
>>
>>3160653
Why would constant trades hurt their feelings? It's constantly going between the same people and they're all training together.

>Why isn't there a couple's or a family plan for pokemon carrying.
>>
>>3160653
yup we are totally on the same page, the trade would primarily be to abide by the legal restrictions and avoid being separated from our 'mons. Thematically Rotom just fits Hana well and who his master is would have pertinence in official league and temple challenge type situation.
>>
We should start thinking about baby names.

“I’m not sure. I’ve considered taking her onto the team. It seems like she’s really genuine about trying to earn everyone’s trust. I’d love to have her on my team, but it’s full. I’d need a way around it.”

“Sounds like you’re pretty interested.” She comments.

“Well, I mostly just wanted to make sure she was safe at first. But I do like having her around. I could see her with almost any of us. You, Hana, Abigail.”

“Abigail?” Laki raises an eyebrow. “That’d be interesting.”

“What do you mean?”

“How did someone so bad at reading girls end up with me and Hana?” She gives you funny smile. “Haven’t you noticed? She only keeps Conqueror. She couldn’t bring herself to catch another pokemon when she was with Hana and Keira getting the psychic temple girls. She’s got something to work out before she takes on a second pokemon, if she ever does.”

“Oh. I didn’t notice.”

“She doesn’t exactly talk about it.” Laki says in your defense. “She’s a private person, in a lot of ways.”

You walk for awhile as you think reflect on the importance of compatibility between pokemon and their trainers. Your eyes fall on Ghost pepper buzzing around Hana. She relents and invites it into her leg. Abigail must be feeling like her old self because she thinks the way Hana and Ghost try to coordinate their walking is the most hilarious thing she’s ever seen.

“Hey, so out of curiosity, are there institutes that help pokemon like Gardevoir?”

Laki shrugs. “Hmm, probably on Opala. That’s where we have a lot of older people. If there’s a specialized place for this sort of thing, it’s probably there. But maybe a temple has a branch I don’t know about. That’s a good question.” She reflects for awhile.

Hana runs to catch up with everyone from getting off the path. “Do you guys know what sort of gym this is? I mean, I know it’s dark, but, what are the rules? What’s the gimmick?”

“It’s new.” Abigail says. “I heard they were really artsy types. I think they do contest battles, but from what I’ve heard they’re fine any anything they can call avant-garde.”

You’re familiar with that type from the fashion world.

“So you can pitch any sort of battle type, then?” Hana asks.

“Probably.” Abigail shrugs.

>You’ll just have a simple one vs one if they allow it

I kinda want to find out for sure soon whether Gobble (Pokemon) wants to evolve or not. As much as I'd like to see our little Gobble go full Musclelax, feeding him properly would become much harder (which I'm pretty sure he knows & is part of why he hasn't yet), and IIRC he's already somewhat underfed as a side-effect of the self-control we've been teaching him.

Which reminds me, I think we need to make that special high-cal/fat temple bread more regularly to help get him the calories he needs regardless of evolution, I don't think we've made any in quite a while.
>>
>>3160881
This
>>
>>3160881
We talked to him a little while ago about making sure he’s not eating too little.

And he’s expressed that he does want to evolve. (Though I worry he wants to do so to impress Sorbet, which is a bad reason I think.)

Also, I just assumed we’ve been making him baco bread “off-screen”, since after we learned how to make it, we haven’t seen Gobble be hungry like he used to.

Personally, as cool as Snorlax is, I’m a little reluctant to see him evolve, just because it’d be so much harder to bring him everywhere like we do. Though I have a few plans for what might help if he doesn’t like his new size.
>>
>>3160889
Good, I couldn't remember if we'd had that discussion with him before, and we definitely do want to confirm his reasons for wanting to evolve. And I hope we've been making that bread offscreen. I worry cause there hasn't even been an offhand mention of making some in a long time.

What are your plans regarding him possibly not liking his size? Because I can't think of anything aside from him being slimmer/musclier than a typical Snorlax in the first place.

Also, note to self: Make bigger Silk Scarf when/if he evolves.
>>
>>3160889
I'm hoping Gobble goes full fanfic and rolls out a unique evolution due to the fact it is highly unlikely anyone has ever taught a munchlax to cook before, like the chancy or slowpoke thing but maybe with our frying pan or something I dunno. It's unlikely, but it was talked about a long time ago and it is staying my headcannon until proven otherwise.
>>
>>3160902
I kinda hope that too. I'd laugh if he evolved into a Musclelax variant because of his self-control, hard training, and better nutritional intake due to teaching him cooking. Normal Snorlax is interesting too though.
>>
>>3160902
>>3160907
Maybe we can teach Gobble a new version of the move Minimize, that lasts outside of a battle, to allow him to evolve but not be not as large as other Snorlax?
>>
>>3160919
nah not the same appeal, I would rather him evolve then that. The size is not really the problem anyway it is more the sleeping, Gobble enjoys an active lifestyle and it is kind of a shame for that to come to an end.
>>
>>3160897
There’s a few things we can do.

One, is have him use Minimize. Just, straight-up teach him how to shrink. Now, it’s not a perfect plan, because Snorlax can’t normally learn that move. But he can definitely learn Snatch and take a Minimize from a Pokémon that does. Alternatively, Mace shouldn’t normally be able to learn tri-attack either. I see Herb being able to teach his Pokémon some Normal type moves that they shouldn’t normally get. Or, we could go for that potential-unlocking of controlling metronome some that we didn’t before. I voted against it the first time because I like the randomness. But if using metronome to pull a particular move took long enough to be unviable in battle, I’d be okay with it.

Two, we use psychics. Multiple times in the anime, (though you’ll probably remember Sabrina) we’ve seen immense psychic power as able to shrink people and/or Pokémon. And while I don’t think just teaching Gobble the move Psychic would be enough, we could try training Gardevoir to do so. Maybe she would have to have Herb funnel aura energy into her to pull it off, I don’t know.

Three, there’s also technology. Last year, in the sun and moon anime, Faba just straight-up invented a shrink ray. He did a honey I shrank the kids to Ash, Lilly, and Sophocles.

If none of that works, or if Gobble doesn’t like being all sleepy now (and worry seed coffee doesn’t fix that), there’s always de-evolution. There’s a card in the Pokémon TCG that de-evolves Pokémon, some sort of ray gun. I’ll bet that there’s a way to replicate that with aura, but I’d really like Herb to examine a pokemon’s aura while they evolve first to see what the exactly changes during it are. I’d like to see him do that anyways.

Instead of evolving Gobble normally, we could evolve him like Yellow does in the manga, using aura. When the effect wears off, he would revert back to a Munchlax.

And at the deep end of desperation, we see from the anime that if Rotom possesses an elevator, it turns into a time machine. We could use it to go back and prevent him from evolving. Apparently, time-travel in Pokémon is paradox proof and doesn’t splinter the timeline. We would of course, then be obligated to save people from tragic deaths using this ability, fake their deaths in the past, and bring them to the future to avoid messing with the timeline to heavily.

If all he needs is a way to get through doorframes, we can just use our pokeball or Ally Switch or, weirdly, Celebrate. Celebrate just packages a Pokémon up into a small box they can then emerge from. I think maybe Substitute would work too since the users of substitution jutsu seem to teleport on Naruto.

Let me know what you guys think.
>>
>>3160902
God no

>>3160945
I think you people are really just stressing out about this way too much. He could just be an ACTIVE SNORLAX, pokemon are like people they're not all beholden to the standards of their species.

Get a grip people you're worrying too much about nothing. Let him evolve he'll still be the same Gobble we love.
>>
>>3160979
Hey, it’s just options if he’s not happy with his evolution.

I’m fully aware it may be a non-issue, but because Laki’s Dad pointed out that it might be an issue and Herb said he’d figure something out if it did, I started figuring.

I just included the somewhat over the top and absolutely way too over the top options for completeness.
>>
>>3160979
Sure, plus we can always make some worry seed coffee for Gobble if he's had a particularly large dinner and he needs some extra pep or just store him in his ball if he really needs a nap. I'm honestly not too worried. I'll still love our Gobble no matter what form he's in.
>>
>>3160986
I didn't mean to be harsh so sorry if I came off that way. I'm fairly certain he wants to evolve though. if he doesn't that's his prerogative. I appreciate you trying to come up with solutions but a lot of them were so out there and silly it threw me off.

>>3161008
I also think the food thing is a bit of a non issue too, let him forage in the jungle for a bit where possible and it should be good to go, he can collect his own ingredients for a big supper.
>>
>>3161008
fuck I forgot all about the worry seed coffee, still think an OC evolution would be neat but with the coffee in play I guess there really is nothing to worry about no matter what, which is ironic given the subject matter.
>>
>>3161015
It’s ok, I know I can come off like that sometimes.

Of the ones that might seem like a little much, I think the Yellow-style temporary evolution is my favorite. If anything, it would at least give him a chance to try on the body before he commits to it, even if we don’t use it to try to milk the best of both worlds.

Of the easier ones, I like teaching him minimize the most.

>>3161030
You know, I think I’d rather see an OC mega than an OC split evolution. Especially for Snorlax.
>>
Moreover...
Is anyone else afraid for Jane because of what the destroyer may do to her in her dreams because she did exactly what she promised not to do?

Or for Herb because he agreed to keep doing so?

Because I’ve been worried about that.

Well, Hana and Laki both seemed open to 4somes with Keira back when we were boning at Laki’s place.

Once Herb realizes what his “support” means (and I’m into the idea of him shooting up in bed tonight realizing that) we’ll have somewhere to work from. My plan is to lay out that we’re not super comfortable excluding both of our girls. Or, if we’re talking to our girls first, to tell them what we’ve realized we’ve signed us 3 up for and make sure they’re ok with that.

If we’re open and honest and focused on good communication, we’ll get the best outcomes whether or not that involves extra porking.

And while we’re being horny here, I want to lay out that I don’t think we should make moves towards Val, Jane, or Abi, for different reasons.
>>
We also recently met an ex-gang leader who would be pretty upset about a main-lander "helping" with a fertility ritual. Not to mention he could do some digging to learn about our connections to the vispum industry.
>>
>>3162352
Pokemon has always been about the friends you make along the way. In this case Herb's friends also happen to be romantic interests. I really don't see much difference between this quest and Gobble's previous Pokemon quest in that regard.

That would be a reason to add Keira to the Sal let alone assisting in the ritual. The anti-"Mainland" push is seriously harmful to both the islands progress and the preserving of their existing culture as the current trend will lead to the majority viewing the culture as exclusionary and damaging.
>>
>>3162931

Meh, harem simulator seems to be a disengenous assumption. Most of the problems as of late have been from outside the group, and beyond the more lovey dovey and sometimes raunchy moments it’s never felt like harem management; Gobbles really good at making the characters feel like that, their own characters.

this anon has a point, pokemon quest has always been "a damn harem simulator". It's not Gobbles fault either, they said from the start they would take this shit as far as anon wanted it and fairly quickly we arrived where we are now. It's a harem simulator because that is what the people wanted.

Luckily Gobble has always been and continues to be talented enough to make anything great, so don't worry everything is going to be ok.

Location: Walking into Terichi, the city of nightlife!

The previous quest was also primarily about the social ties of the MC. Thats how Gobbles quests go, and its great. It's less about the crunch of stats or canon centric interpretation of the Pokemon universe.

The past several threads has had tons of story progression, on top of other progress, but there has been a marked reduction in lewd as other Non-harem members take the spotlight for a bit.

You think about the question. If they do almost anything, then you want to take advantage of that and find a unique experience. You snap your fingers. “Are they set up for an inverse battle?”

“Inverse battle?” Hana asks. “Wait, where the types are all reversed?”

Abigail sighs. “That’s the one. And last time I was here, yeah. They’ll probably be pretty excited for that request.”

Laki gives Abigail a sideways look. “You battled at this gym?”

Conqueror’s pokeball seems to need some polishing, so Abigail becomes too busy to acknowledge the question.

Laki shrugs and stretches, beginning her standard ritual for getting ready for a battle. Watching her relaxed muscles flex and grow highlights what a finely crafted work of art her body is. Watching the wheels turn in her head as she thinks about her strategy tells what a well tuned warrior mind she has.

“What?” It all vanishes in a self-conscious, awkward laugh when she catches you staring at her.

If you’re planning on asking her to double battle with you, now would be a good time to bring it up.

I understand not wanting to go full harem, but we've gone too far to cuck her now that she has become a fertility priestess and is so excited about doing her thing with us. Though I'll vote for adding her to the harem anyway because she's my favorite and I love her.

“Nothing, just thinking about my battle strategy.” You answer, putting your mind to that task.

She gives a hunter’s grin. “Exciting, right? I won’t distract you.”

You think about how you’ll approach this. It’ll be tricky to keep in mind how the types are reversed in an inverse battle in the heat of the moment. Your mind rushes over trying to memorizing everything while you look to each of your following pokemon.

Ghost Pepper is getting pretty high up. Mace takes it upon himself to fly up there and push him down closer, gently. Seems like they have a bit of a communication gap. Pepper zips around Mace, who then chases after him. To Pepper’s surprise, Mace is able to predict where he’ll fly and cut him off. To Mace’s surprise, on Pepper’s second attempt he just flies right through Mace like he’s made of air. Mace sighs, but Pepper comes flying down when Hana waves her arm to him. Or her. You’re not sure what to call Pepper.

Hana laughs. “Guess this thing is becoming a sort of Pokeball.”

Mace comes flying down by your side. He lands when Belladonna tries jumping on him for a free ride. She pouts, then hops on Sorbet until that gets too cold. Dice makes for a good mount, though, despite the big, wet licks.

Gobble walks alongside with you, watching the others with some concern. He wants to step in and get them to focus before the big battle.

I’m working tonight, so I’ll say now:

I’d like to use the other 3 this time, Sorbet, Dice, and Pepper. They haven’t battled in a while. And Bella’s Laser Focus/ Magical Leaf (“Laser Leaf”) is going to be good here, since Grass is supereffective against 6 things in inverse battles.

Pepper doesn’t have any ghost attacks right now, which is too bad because they would be super effective against Dark in inverse. You can try to get Sorbet to help teach it Hex before the gym, but Charge+Discharge is a good combo. Pepper is going to have the most power, I expect, in trickyness. Try to ally switch with Wailord to pin opponents under him, it’ll be brutal.

And I’m excited to see Dice in action in this evolution. Let’s make sure not to forget to get Wailord’s help in teaching him Liquidation.

Lastly, remember to check the inverse battle type chart!

“Go ahead, Gobble. Do whatever you think is best. I trust your judgement. Your my right-hand guy, after all.”

Gobble absorbs the message. He takes the responsibility seriously and nods. He makes some noises to grab each pokemon’s attention. It’s funny seeing each head turn as he addresses them.

But nobody seems to take him too seriously. Mace and Dice fall into line out of friendship. Sorbet gets closer, but still stays far enough away that she’s outside the immediate area. Pepper does eventually zip in close when he sees Gobble has your approval, though.

Mace, seeing Gobble is having some trouble getting everyone to entirely focus, gives a subtle nod. Gobble looks confused for a second, but does whatever Mace was instructing and throws a small rock into the air. Mace goes flying up and smacks it down.

“Laki!” Laki announces, impressed.

That gets the other’s attention. It looks like Gobble asks Mace to demonstrate a way he can contribute to the next battle if needed. That gets the others to want to show off their own thing they can do. Nobody shows any new moves, but each of them makes a display of strength or agility or accuracy. They're all mentally preparing now.

Gobble gives Mace a thankful look, and Mace gives a knowing nod.

The buildings change as you walk into the city. It goes from the abandoned and desolate warehouse and factory buildings you remember from before, to the same types of buildings but fixed up a bit, and trendy looking. You pass by an expensive cupcake shop that distracts Gobble for half a second.

“Bread?” You offer.

Gobble shakes his head. He doesn’t want any before the battle. He’s still got your light meal in his belly.

“Alright. We’ll save it for after.”

He nods and wipes his mouth.

“This is the gym?” Hana looks up as your party comes to a stop. It’s another large warehouse, but the front is decorated with tacky, plastic recreations of some of the unique architecture designs you’ve seen on other buildings in the region.

Laki sighs in disgust. Before she can do anything more, the man in front who looks like a bouncer asks “names?”

“Uh, I’m Herb.” You introduce yourself. The girls follow suit.

He puts them into a tablet. A few seconds later, he puts a finger over a device in his ear. “Alright. Go on in.”

You walk into the darkness and thumping music, feeling the sound grow in your chest. A spotlight hits you before your eyes can adjust and the music stops.

“WELCOME!” A loud, eager, feminine voice booms over the sound system. You can’t see anything at the moment with the bright spotlight.

>Give a formal and respectful bow, like you would for any other gym leader

“Hi.” You say with a bright smile. It’s just instinct. “I’m Herb.”

"Love it."

The spotlight seems satisfied, and shoots over to Laki. She blocks her eyes, but only hesitates for half a second before offering a proper, formal bow.

"Meh."

It hits Hana next. Hana immediately tightens up and looks nervous. “I, uhh, oh. Hello.” She blinks, then also gives a formal bow like Laki did. “S-sorry!”

The spotlight moves on to Abigail. She squints. “Get that shit out of my face.”

Laki’s eyes look like they’re going to pop out of their sockets and beat Abigail to death.

The person holding the microphone can’t contain her laughter at that. “I remember you.”

“Ditto, unfortunately.” Abigail replies under her breath.

The spotlight dims and your eyes adjust to the dark club. There’s a bar, a DJ section with someone bobbing their head and working a laptop, and a woman approaching middle age in the kind of clothes your sister would get in trouble leaving the house in. But what really draws your attention is her pale skin and stark red hair.

“Blondie....Herb, yeah. That was your name. You passed. Laki and Hana, you have to perform.”

“W...what?” Laki tries to keep up.

“He’s in the moment. Abigail too. But you girls? You’re way too self-conscious. You’re going to have to prove you can loosen up before you’re getting anywhere in my gym.”

“...loosen up?”

“Yes, girl! Live a little. Dance like nobody is watching! How are your pokemon supposed to feel confident and inspired by a stiff?” Laki and Hana aren’t getting it yet, so she expounds. “Show me you can dance without being self aware.”

“I’m a trainer, not a dancer.” Laki protests.

“Then do something else! Sing! Act! Be unfiltered. Just take off that mask and be real!”

Laki and Hana both look pretty unsure about what to do.

Supporting that and also suggesting Laki does some...Hmm... Not much of her kind of "letting loose" stuff can really work in a DJ area... Well... Fak... My only kind of suggestion would be if she knows any discus or shotput forms thanks to her track and field experience. Though pole vaulting is pretty far removed from those two.

“I, uh...” Hana looks lost about what to do.

"You're a physical person." You whisper encouragement to Laki. "You've got lots of things you can do to show off. Or things you can talk about. You'll do fine."

Laki thinks on your word, but Hana surprises everyone. by moving first.

“Guess I’ll try this.” Hana says, stepping forwarding and dancing. Oh. She’s doing the robot. She laughs and awkwardly moves as she does one of the worst versions of the robot you’ve ever seen.

“Fail.” The gym leader says.

“I know right.” Hana looks up. “Like, how am I bad at doing the robot? Total fail.”

“No. I mean, you failed. You’re doing it as a joke. You’re still stiff and perfectly self-aware. You haven’t stepped outside of your head for a second. You’re just trying to make a fool of yourself on purpose so you’ll be safe from real embarrassment. Real vulnerability. Try again in a minute.”

Hana looks pretty shocked at that, but not hurt. She steps out of the spotlight to reflect.

Wordlessly, you step into the spotlight.

“I need a certain track for this.” You say, then clarify which one it is for the DJ.

He smirks as he pulls it up. “I gotcha, senpai.”

The music starts, and you nod with the beat until it’s time to you. Then you dance! You’re glorious and on tempo, remembering every move. It’s just a silly fad dance that went out of style during the same summer it became a big hit, but it’s one you’re fantastic at. You remember practicing it over and over with your sister. She thought it was the coolest thing ever, and you thought she was the coolest person ever, so you worked hard to get it just right. The two of you even invented a few variations and flourishes. You find yourself really getting into it, and able to completely relax since it’s all muscle memory that will never fade.

“That was awesome!” Hana says quietly but excitedly.

“Way to move, Soft Hands. But why isn’t that a joke dance?” Laki asks in Hana’s defense.

“Because he was trying his best. He wasn’t held back by his concern about being vulnerable. He was having fun more than he was trying to impress anyone.”

“I think I get it.” Hana says, looking preemptively embarrassed. “I have something.”

The gym leader motion Hana forward. “Go ahead.”

Hana coughs, closes her eyes, lowers her head, then bursts into a monologue. It’s an emotional one from a movie, that builds slowly but becomes more and more intense. And she gets into it. She’s clearly practiced this one a lot. Probably in front of a mirror. You don’t remember this exact scene, but you recognize the character. That boxing movie about Stoney something. She talks about getting hit by life and getting back up again with great emotion and presence, reciting the words that undeniably spoke to her.

“Don’t forget to visit your mother.” She finishes.

Following along the movie theme, the group begins a slow clap that builds. Hana once again becomes incredibly self-conscious.

“Pass.” The gym leader says with satisfaction.

“Alright. Alright. I get it.” Laki steps forward. She clears her throat too. Then, she sings.

And she’s...well, she tries. It’s a lullaby. You don’t need to have it explained to you that it’s something personal to her. A sweet, slow song that she barely stays in the same octave for, but still something she sings through without stopping in the middle of or doing anything other than expressing it the best she can.

“That was very brave.” The gym leader says. “Aren’t you glad you did it?”

Laki looks at Abigail expecting some wisecrack, but the tiny redhead doesn't say a word or even give a smug look.

“Yeah.” Laki agrees.

“Great! Now, judging by your little army of pokemon, I’m assuming you’re here to try to earn a badge.”

Laki clarifies that you and her are, but Hana is just looking to fight a member and not the leader.

“If it’s not any trouble.” Hana shyly adds on.

“Not at all. But who wants to go first.”

“Well, before that.” Laki asks. “Soft han...Herb wanted to know if he can do an inverse battle. I sort of do too.”

“YES!” She almost jumps. She coughs. “Yes. Absolutely. Who wants to go first?” Her hands quickly signal the DJ to activate a weird setup along the ceiling that must be the device that makes an inverse battle possible.

You and Laki look to each other. She has no strong preference.

“I’ll go first.” You take the initiative.

“Men, always first, am I right?” She laughs and looks to the girls. She shrugs when she doesn’t really get the laughs she was expecting. “I’m Meara, by the way.”

“Nice to make your acquaintance, Meara.” You say with a smile. You’re excited! Gobble bows eagerly as well.

“You’re a genuine gentleman, huh? What a rarity.” She smiles. “Alright you little cutie. Go to your area. I’ll announce the rules.”

The battle arena is a simple flat disco floor. But above it are four platforms suspended by heavy duty chains, creating two stories of battle space. The gap between the four square platforms is relatively small. Small enough for many, but not all types of pokemon to be able to jump the gap.

You arrive at your side and wait as the inverse battle system finishes being activated.

“Alright. So I assume you understand how an inverse battle works since you requested it. But there’s something else you should know about this arena.” Each quarter section of the arena goes dark in sequences. Then one half goes dark while the other is lit, then vice versa. “Get it? Darkness can strike any section at any time. You can’t predict it, so don’t bother. Learn to adapt. Got it?”

“Yes ma’am!”

“Ma’am.” She laughs under her breath. “Alright. We’ll use three Pokemon each. Ready?”

“Kick some ass, Herb!” Abigail shouts as the music begins to fade in.

Music? She didn’t mention that. But you suppose that’s to be expected in a place like this. The low rhythmic thumping almost makes your feet tap, despite this not really being your cup of sugar.

“Go, Belladonna!” You announce as you toss her onto the top platform.

She nods along with the music, looking excited to be able to show off in the club.

“Go Weavile!” Meara announces at the same time. It’s a pink and yellow pokemon standing on two legs, with sharp claws on its hands. It’s also on a top platform, opposite of Belladonna.

“Well, this will be interesting.” Meara smirks.

Bella looks excited, but she also seems a bit concerned about the relatively low level of light in here, even if a section hasn’t gone dark yet. She poses for the Weavile in a way that makes you raise an eyebrow.

“Belladonna! Use Laser Focus!”

She glances back.

“The normal version.” You confirm. You want to ensure the next hit is a critical hit, no matter what.

“Embargo!” Meara instructs her rapidly approaching Weavile. Belladonna is struck by a strange and seemingly harmless move before she can put a target on Weavile. But she still does it. A nice big red targeting circle right on Weavile’s face.

Her confidence wavers as she realizes something is wrong. Her Black Sludge isn’t working! Not that she’s hurt, but it’s still something she’s apparently come to trust to make her feel safe.

Your bad luck comes into play as Belladonna’s section becomes dark. Even through the slowly growing music, you hear a scared whimper come from her.

“Get ready for that ranged Grass attack. Get in close and pressure her with Feint Attack.” Meara announces.

Weavile vanishes into the darkness where Bella is, having rapidly ran and leapt the distance. The agile pokemon seems perfectly confident getting into melee range with Belladonna and pressuring her so ranged attacks are harder.

“Bella! Poison Sting!”

As Weavile closes in on the edge of the darkness, a sharp needle erupts from it and strikes him at almost the same time. He’s shocked, pausing for a second before jerking away and leaping back. That got him right in a vulnerable spot under his harm, poisoning and rattling him.

“It’s just because of that Laser Focus move! Don’t let it get to you, Weavile. You still have the advantage in the dark. They used their trump card. Their next move won’t hit.”

Weavile tries to shake it off as he gets ready to leap back in.

Hey Gobble, it looks like you have a move wrong in the character info bin. We taught Bella Magical Leaf, not Razor Leaf. I think that’s why you keep putting Razor Leaf in the options and not Magical Leaf.

Because Magical Leaf always hits, has a higher base damage, and uses special attack (which Roserade has a lot more of than Razor Leaf’s physical attack), it’s a pretty important difference.

Also, the boosted critical range on Razor Leaf makes Laser Focus less worthwhile.

Also also, always hitting will be important in the dark here.

>>3166987
>Leech seed and get some distance.

While we lack a couple sources of healing, we still have Leech seed, Mega Drain, Sunny Day, and Synthesis. We resist ice, we can just weather this.

Thanks for running Gobble! Hope you’re feeling better soon!

Hey guys, I know it might not add anything mechanically, but since the music’s going and since Bella’s getting into the rhythm and posing, I think we should start posing with her when one of her attacks hits on beat.

Found it, thread #72.

It’s a great bread and butter grass move. Strongest base power that can be boosted by technician, works off of our main attacking stat, cannot miss, cool animation in gens 4 and 5, without the drawbacks of something somewhat harder hitting like Petal Dance or Petal Blizzard.

For Bella’s next training steps, I’d like to teach her Ingrain and Grassy Terrain. Not only do they both add healing-over-time effects she can stack onto her held item, leech seed, Mega/Giga Drains, and Synthesis, but Ingraine will keep her from getting her Growth boosts phased out with her and Grassy Terrain will boost the Laser Focus/ Magical Leaf combo from 202 power to 303 (which is a lot.)
>>
I feel like I make a lot of training plans but since I know I can focus on game mechanics and tricks that we’ve already seen work, so I might be missing some creative opportunities (like attaching Leech Seeds to Magical Leaves to make sure they hit).

What moves, techniques, or fighting styles do you guys want to learn/explore/refine?

(Also, I really enjoy chatting with you guys between posts/sessions.)

Using Raindance after Sandstorm for crazy amounts of mud. Mace and Pepper can fly, Dice should be able to flop through mud with ease (he can probably use it to insulate against electric attacks too) and we could probably train Sorbet to freeze the mud under her paws for solid footing. We should also teach Gobble and Bella to position with their backs to the sun if we call for a Sunny Day. We might be able to do this after a Hail to induce snow blindness.

Had a thought. Gobble needs to learn Sleep Talk for the classic Rest combo but what if we train Amnesia to let him temporarily forget some of his moves until the Amnesia wears off. That way we'd have way more control over what moves he fired off while sleeping.

Rest, Snore, and Sleep Talk are all on the near-universal TMs list, so we could teach all of our Pokémon how to heal up to full and fight while asleep. Maybe involve Laki and Hana’s Pokémon in the group lesson. It’s a tactic that I think suits the Pokémon of a healer.

Interestingly, both Bella and Dice have abilities that boost Snore.

I really like that idea about Amnesia though.

I remember talking a bunch about custom weathers towards the beginning of the quest. I wonder if we could use Sunny Day to let Dice trigger Water Pledge?

I’m also into the idea of using Pepper’s ability to phase to hide out in the ground while the enemy racks up poison, burn, or leech seed damage.

In this fight though, I’d like to see it possess the lights to super-boost a Flash attack.

We could develop Dice's style more so he gets the Tangled Feet ability. We can then teach him Outrage (or Thrash but Outrage is just generally a better option I think.) or give him one of the confusion berries. Gobble and Mace could also learn Swagger. I also think we should teach him to roll on any biting attack he does, besides making the move do more damage, if it brings the fight to the ground Dice should generally have an edge there.

It may also be cool if we could get Mace to create geodes on attacks like Rock Blast and Rock Slide once he learns it. Once the battlefield is littered with rocks they could be detonated later with a sufficiently strong fire attack from us or the opponent. ( I remember we started teaching Gobble Flamethrower at some point.).

On the topic of custom weather, Fog was a thing in Diamond and Pearl. It would destroy accuracy for all pokemon in the battle. We could use it obscure vision to set traps and such. Bella has Magical Leaf and Mace doesn't rely on sight. I feel like it would be a relatively natural extension of Mist. Since I'm typing about Sorbet anyways the ability to create ice walls as a defensive move. Maybe they could only block in one direction but they could also reflect thing like Glare or Scary face if thrown up fast enough. Enough of them could create a hall of mirrors and Aurora Beam and Dazzling gleam could be reflected off of them.

See, I had thought we could maybe get Mace’s Sandstorm to obscure vision like that.

So... I’ve come up with an idea for Gardevoir... but I think it’s probably only going to work for a little while at a time.

If we find a Pokémon with the Contrary Ability, we can have Gardevoir use Skill Swap to get that ability for herself. Then, we have Gobble use Amnesia. Gardevoir will use Snatch so that she uses Amnesia instead of him. Then, due to Contrary, the opposite of Amnesia will happen to her, lowering her Special Defense two stages and, theoretically, causing her to remember/ be lucid for some time. We could use this to ask her if she’s always been this way, and if not, when and why her memory became like it is.

My only other plan is to find the secret Fairy temple and see if they know anything about it.

Otherwise, we’ll just have to find ways to help her cope with her short term memory loss issues.

Separate from all that though, we should find out what all moves she knows so we can ask her to help teach some of them to our Pokémon. I bet Pepper could pick up Telekinesis from her.
