_________________________________________________________
In the last session we arranged our mailbox, made some paper, a primitive printing press and hired Rheia as our assistant. Then we decided to learn more about our body by skinny dipping into a geyser. It was not a smart idea…
>>
>>3186337
You take a look into the geyser pond. The water is a bit muddy but you can still see your reflection. All of your amazing red hair fell out and your skin looks all wrinkled and horrible. The worst part is that you haven’t figured out much about those scales. Maybe they don’t work in hot water? You were fighting enemies with essentially laser weapons after all. Or maybe you were not in enough distress to use it. Last time when this power triggered you were fighting for your life. This was a bad idea…

In any case, what’s done is done. You think that you’ll heal fully in two- three weeks so you should take a note from Haven’s wardrobe and cover everything. In addition, you should probably just not leave home for a while. On the plus side you can tutor Rheia and work on some smaller things. Also, maybe you should think of changing your hairstyle? You didn’t really care about these things before but now as you are regrowing you might as well experiment a little. Shame that polished bronze mirrors are such a pain and you can’t get better ones without silver, sheet glass and some chemicals…

You had to wait for a nightfall before returning to the village. While the towers were occupied by some night watchers you managed to easily sneak past them and get back into your home unseen. After that you took the clothes that cover most of your skin, wrapped up your hands and face and added your cloak on top. You haven’t worn it since you switched to the giant wolf pelt but now it feels more appropriate.

Rheia, who came over on the next day, worries that you covered yourself completely but she understands that it is temporary and you should be back to normal in a couple weeks. However, she tells you that something has been bothering her. Back when you saved her the monster was finishing off another person. Rheia said that this guy was definitely not from Farsalos and he didn’t look like a bandit either. It also doesn’t seem like that creature attacked any other settlements nearby as there were no reports of it. It was called “Blight of Farsalos” for a reason. Come to think of it… this guy’s clothes were even rougher than villagers at the point when you were only starting with repairs. More of sackcloth than fabric fit for human use. Was he a runaway slave? Or maybe there is someone living to the north of Farsalos? There was a destroyed stone age settlement in the Mad Goddess occupied area…

In any case, thoughts for later. What do you plan to do now?
>Minimize your time outside of your home, teach Rheia and do some small things like investigating dwarf artifacts
>Just do the usual stuff but wrapped up and in a cloak

That settlement was compleately destroyed? Was the guy a refugee or maybe there are more people there?

oh and tell rheia how scientific discovery can have no results and what you should learn from that, also get ready for concern and maybe some laughing
>>
>>3186373
That settlement was a zombie town galore and only the primitive stone walls remained. We have no idea if he was from there or not but that's pretty far away from Farsalos. It is possible that he was from there but that's unlikely.
>>
>>3186380
Hmmm

So we may need to search for signs of habitation near that area to see if there was any other settlements nearby.

It would be better if you just stay in your home for now. You don’t want to risk accidentally flashing your wounds to the villagers. Who knows what they’d think if that happened. While your disappearance for some time could raise some rumors, it would still be less than if you showed up all cloaked and mysterious for seemingly no reason. Thus, you’ll spend your time healing, resting, teaching Rheia and looking into the stuff you’ve earned from the dwarven city.

You wanted to look into the properties of mythic alloy since you’ve first heard of its existence. You didn’t believe that it would be overly amazing, after all you didn’t know of any material that required these conditions to melt and form the alloy. However, after thorough analysis you only wished to know more. This material is highly heat resistant and it seems to have abnormally low thermal conductivity. You can heat it up until it glows red but then seconds later it is literally safe to touch with bare hands like space shuttle ceramic tiles. It is also incredibly hard. Out of every tool you had you could only barely scratch it with a diamond and even then, only when you were applying a lot of pressure on the heated ingot. It doesn’t seem to change its size when heated up in a manner you could detect and you didn’t manage to bend or break it even when applying your full power. You really want a full set of gear out of this stuff, it is amazing.

Alloy’s smaller cousin, mythic metal, turned out pretty interesting as well. It melts at the temperature of 1600 degrees Celsius and it has comparable mechanical qualities to spring steel. However, you can’t identify the elements it is made of. It seemingly radiates perfectly through the entirety of human visible spectrum without any emission or absorption lines. When molten it has higher density than in its solid form similarly to water ice and it also refuses to mix with any other metal causing the latter to float on its surface like oil on water. Looks like this material would require some interesting casting techniques to prevent internal stresses as most metals are less dense as a liquid causing exactly the opposite problem of cavities in the cast.
>>
>>3186583
Your new artifact sword is a great addition to your arsenal. While not only being made out of the most durable material currently available it was also created seemingly without a single mistake down to microscopic level. It is also heavier than alloy’s density would suggest. You could not scratch it the same way you scratched the ingot. After a little bit of testing you managed to cleave through pig iron bars, concrete and basalt with some telekinetic assistance with no damage to the weapon whatsoever. Looks like it is the first item that can keep up with your new body. Yes, it will serve you well.

Three weeks later your skin returned to normal and your hair grew to the point when it is appropriate for women by local standards and you can finally afford to do some other stuff. Let’s see…

The villagers had three weeks without you after you’ve installed the public mail system. You wonder if they use it. Your mail was empty the whole time so you assume nothing apocalyptical has happened yet as you set off for the town hall to see what’s up.

Villagers seem to be mostly busy with the harvest and don’t pay much attention to you. Within just a week most plants would halt their growth and hibernate meaning that the entirety of village food supply with exception of hunting would rely specifically on the stores. Speaking of which, it looks like villagers bought a couple cats. The merchant has probably popped up and sold them. That’s good news for you as you would prefer for the village to not have any rats around the place. Hopefully it would not turn into a cat-astrophe. Okay, I’ll stop now.

Village now also has an actual working hunter. It is not the man whose bow you broke as that guy was drafted and died. He seems to be regularly catching small animals like rabbits and you assume he specializes on trapping. He also is a part of the village new militia. That’s right, a few Veterans came together and formed an official volunteer militia and they set up a training area somewhere within the outer walls where they train mainly with their bows and spears. They are a bit lightly armored… and armed. Smith probably can’t keep up with the weapons yet. Maybe you should assist them sometime…

You finally make your way to the town hall and enter. Zosime greets you and compliments your new hairstyle. Honestly you just had enough length to set up a simple short bob but you are flattered. It looks like there are a few things of interest in the village:

Cenophilans celebrate Autumn Festival on the last day of autumn. Celebrations usually include some decorations, gifts and a large communal feast usually accompanied with alcohol if available. It is not quite a new year but it is the closest analogue and one of the three main celebrations in Cenophilan calendar with the other two being first day of spring and the longest day of summer. Farsalos hasn’t celebrated this since the draft and there is a debate if the village can afford to spend the food and effort on it. The festival would start in roughly two weeks if we want to pursue it.
>>
>>3186844
The other point is regarding the housing and hiring of constructors. While you simplified the process, three weeks is not enough for these people to build everything and some of the villagers are starting to offer relatively meager pay for people who could help them with assembling the houses. Also, there is apparently an issue with the bunker system. While safe, it is just a bit too claustrophobic, cramped and dark. Villagers understand that it is temporary but they still don’t like this, especially the lighting. The villagers can only afford primitive oil lamps and torches that give little light. You could donate a few of your glowing quartz stones or you could set up synthetic wax production for candles or maybe even electric lighting. You’ll need to think of this a bit more.

There are a few minor other things like harvest planning, that inn project, rare but recurring dreams of a small girl… a few other things that you won’t look into because they are either personal or villagers can deal with them themselves… aha, a note labeled important. Oh shit. The group of miners hasn’t returned from their expedition to the copper mine for the last five days. They should have enough food for two more days so people are not too worried. You’ve definitely closed off the tunnel to the Labyrinth so it shouldn’t be anything from there… It is an adventurer quest essentially, they want someone to go and see if they are alright there. The reward is pretty good as well, paid from village treasury. You could buy something substantial on the cheap side with that money. However, the situation is worrying. What should you do?

>Alright, scouting and rescue is really important, accept the quest, grab your stuff and set off immediately
>Donate the glowing quartz temporarily to fix the issue with comfort. You expect some to not be returned
>Plan a candle workshop. You can make wax without bees, or at least its clean burning substitute. It would probably double as a new village industry.
>Operation electric lighting is a go!
>Festival sounds great! If they fear for their supplies you can easily fund it off that huge pile of gold and silver you’ve just acquired. Let’s do this!

The situation with the miners is time sensitive so you will pack your gear, accept the quest and leave as soon as possible. However, you’ll still take a couple hours to get to the mine and thus you have an opportunity to think some stuff over. Like the Autumn Festival.

You like the idea of a holiday. There were no major celebrations in the village and this is a great opportunity to improve the morale of the villagers. You will definitely participate as well not only because you think that it could be fun but also that villagers would see a person behind your actions. The only issue is essentially money. You will need to go to the nearest town and sell a couple gold bars. Then you’ll need to buy some food for 250 people, probably of the higher quality and maybe get some alcohol… for the sake of safety you won’t distill it. Maybe just some wine and ale?

You could paint your paper and cut out some decorations. Maybe you could even make a bunch of flying lanterns? That would most probably get some reaction. In addition, the wind blows mainly to the west so they should burn and land in the area cleared out by the Mad Goddess so you don’t risk a forest fire. You also have a unique opportunity to give out presents. Probably you should get something for Rheia and her mother, to Zosime as well… The smith family might get something too… you know what? You are technically a goddess so you could make a present for everyone, right? Uhh… that might take a few more days of thought, you feel like it might fail spectacularly if you ball it up.

Then there is the lighting. You don’t want to give out the glowing quartz because you don’t think people would return it. Electricity might be too arcane and scary for the villagers even if you can afford the necessary glass making and vacuum sealing required to make it work. Idea! Candles. They became popular with the advent of Christianity but there were drawbacks. Bee wax was and will always be too expensive for the huge number of candles needed. The alternative would be animal fat candles, but they left grease everywhere, melted under the sun, had a bad smell and produced a lot of nasty smoke.
>>
>>3187081
Luckily for you, in 1819 Gay-Lussac discovered how to make stearin and every candle in 19th century was made that way. It has a higher melting temperature, produces little smoke and the smell is almost pleasant. You take animal fat and boil it with hydrated lime to get lime soap which takes 6-8 hours. Then you add sulfuric acid in proportion of two parts acid to one part soap to bind the lime while continuing to boil it for the next 4 hours.

You get three fractions, gypsum at the bottom, water with gypsum in the middle and the required stearin on top. Then you soak it off in a wrap of rough cloth to get rid of remaining oleic acid and done. The biggest advantage is that you can melt the material and directly cast it into the molds. In addition, it opens a path to synthesizing glycerin which is a nice bonus.

And you’re finally at the mine and oh boy does it not look good…
_______________________________
And I will leave you on this cliffhanger until tomorrow. Feel free to discuss stuff and ask questions as usual and see you soon.
>>
>>3187086
nice, thanks

we will probably go back to the city then, to get what we need for the festival and maybe some extra animals and animal fat to start our candle factory
>>
>>3187086
Well, you are not sure what to say. This is not a convenient situation but you should have probably seen it coming. There was evidence of a destroyed stone age settlement to the west of Farsalos that fell to the Mad Goddess. Rheia told you that she was worried that the person killed by the Blight was not from the village. And now this thing happened…

When you finally arrived to the mines you could instantly recognize the signs of a fight. Numerous footprints, most of which don’t correlate with Cenophilan footwear, puddles of blood, broken stone spears and wooden arrows, some scattered personal items of the miners.

There is also a large arrangement of sticks in a rough star shape standing like an easel that is decorated with ropes, feathers and an elk’s skull on top. Miner’s cart is broken and shoved in such a way as to block the entrance to the mine. The mined ore is piled up near the entrance so whoever has done this didn’t take it for some reason.

Judging by the state of footprints and blood the actual fight happened less than a day ago. The trail of footprints leads back into the forest and you might be able to catch up to whoever did it before it is too late. You can’t see the bodies so they were either captured, locked in the mine or killed but taken along.

>Rip out the cart from the hole with telekinesis. Maybe there could be survivors?
>Start to carefully disassemble the cart to get into the mine. That will take longer but it would not cause as much noise.

>>
>>3189246
Its a copper mine we cleared some time ago, we had no idea there were primitives around, they were providing copper for the town.
>>
>>3189246
Kinda. The mine was a thing even before the draft but it was closed due to bumping into the Labyrinth so it was abandoned and sealed. When we manually sealed the Labyrinth and the miners came back they decided to reopen it.

This strange wooden structure peeked your interest so you decided to take a closer look. It looks kind of creepy, if you were just a human and saw it in the woods you would prefer to turn away and leave immediately. It reminds you of those wooden shapes from Blair Witch movie mixed with a Dream Catcher. After some investigation it seems that it has no anomalous effect and is probably meant to be a sign of sorts made by the locals. Maybe of religious significance, but also possible that it only means “keep the hell away” to the Farsalos people.

Then you’ve heard a faint pained moan coming from the mine and this meant only one thing: the miners were alive and needed your help immediately! You focused on the cart and anchored yourself against the soil before pulling it out with all of your power. Due to the stress the wooden cart almost completely disintegrated turning into wood chips and small wooden pieces with a loud sound of crumbling wood.

Eh, you can make another cart later. As you entered the mine you first of all bumped into a deceased primitive. The guy was wearing an outfit made out of raw hides stitched together and rough cloth that have more similarities with the backside of a carpet than with actual clothes. He seems to have been killed by a pickaxe strike to the head and he is thoroughly dead and even starting to rot a little. Further in the mines you’ve found four miners who were scared out of their minds, in different states of wounded, hungry and exhausted. Looks like they could not retrieve their food after the fight and were locked here.

The worst news is the guy who sustained a large ripped wound. It was closed and wrapped up but it seems that it was infected. If you don’t apply antibiotics to it you don’t think that he would survive until tomorrow. Others mostly have minor wounds that don’t seem too dangerous. Miners seem to be too exhausted to get back home easily. The trip takes a couple hours only for you, for normal people it takes most part of a day.
>>
>>3189393
The miners are a bit scared of you but they are thankful for being saved. They first thought that some monster has arrived and busted through the blocked entrance. They claim that they stayed here for a bit longer than expected as they had to set up the shelter area because you caved in the last one and they didn’t want to come back empty handed but as they were packing to head back home, they were ambushed by the “barbarians” from the forest. Apparently, they had no idea anyone lived here as this is the first time these wild people were encountered.

The attack split off another two members of the mining team and they were knocked unconscious with clubs. The miners retreated into the mine and tried to defend themselves using the tunnel as a chokepoint but the savages just took the foodstuffs and blocked the exit with the cart. This happened slightly less than a day ago. You came just in time, it seems.

The situation is pretty sensitive. There is a high chance that the infected wound would kill one of the miners in less than a day if you don’t get them some penicillin. However, the more time you spend here the less chance you’ll have to find the savages and save the captured miners. Crap…

>Leave them all of your rations and head off into the forest. You have two other people to save and you can pick them up later (risk to lose one person)
>Make a makeshift sleigh and pull the wounded person home. The rest can follow you and you should get back within a day. (risk to lose one person)
>Grab the wounded person and carry them all the way to the village. The rest can get back on their own.
>Book it for the village to get medical supplies and militia to retrieve the miners later
>Fuck the secrecy, grab everyone with your powers and just book it for the village. You are running out of time here!(Miners will know full extent of your powers)

>>
>>3189406
well, what would be the quickest of the other options?
grabbing only the wounded and then coming back here to follow the tracks?
>>
>>3189413
the fastest and most likely to save them all is the last option, aka revealing ourself to the miners
>>
>>3189413
Well, grabbing the wounded guy would reveal your powers to the wounded guy. Going for medical supplies would take two hours longer but it would not reveal you to anyone directly. There would be questions on how you managed to get back so fast but that would not be a direct observation of your abilities.
>>
>>3189419
>>Grab the wounded person and carry them all the way to the village. The rest can get back on their own.

A tie breaker, my bad
>>
>>3189484
Well, the situation is critical so you have to blow your cover. Your secret is not worth someone’s life. However, you need to at least minimize the possible damage. You leave your rations to the miners and lift up the wounded miner. The wound is not deep but it is on his stomach. If he gets a gangrene he will get fucked and there would be no way to save him so you need to act fast.

You inform the miners of your intentions and book it for the village. Once you get out of view you speed up and accelerate to almost 120 km/h. You can’t risk going faster because you can’t watch the road well and if you stumble and fall the person would die on impact. The miner seems to be in shock from what’s going on so you only hope that people would dismiss it as a fever dream.

Speaking of which, he’s burning up. Fever is common if the wound gets infected. It is the immune system trying to slow the spread of the germs by making the environment too toasty for bacteria. This usually won’t be enough because as bacteria kills nearby tissue it releases toxins that would kill a human within hours. That’s why most soldiers before the widespread use of antibiotics died soon after their wounds and it was one of the most prominent reason for amputations even at your time. Yes, doctors can sew a severed hand back on but they can’t treat necrosis.

You get back to the village in just over an hour and bust into Claudina’s place. She is the village herbalist and doctor and you need someone to take care of the man while you make some more penicillin. As you lack the power for refrigeration you can’t maintain the supply of the antibiotic for long so you have to pull out your lab and cook up another batch.

Claudina knows how to use them as she assisted you during the operation before and after you administered the first injection you leave everything else in her hands. The miner would most probably survive and you can switch to the other pressing tasks.

You head directly for the guard post and explain the situation as soon as the militia assembles. It seems that they are angry at these tribals and there are a few shout outs about retaliating immediately but you manage to talk them into escorting the miners home first. Some soldiers are worried about your wellbeing and recommend you to wait for them before attacking the savages. They worry that no matter how skilled you are you can get overpowered by an entire tribe and death would be a better option in that case.

>Agree to arrange a combined operation with the militia (You lose valuable time)
>Tell them that you only intend to scout ahead and if you can’t handle the situation you will return
>Dismiss their worries. You killed things that are way more dangerous than small groups of poorly equipped cavemen

I think that letting the militia get some more hands on experience would be a good thing

You tell them that you will only scout ahead and retreat if you can’t handle the situation. It is a lie, of course, you can pretty easily beat up whole armies of baseline humans with relative ease. You will consider calling them only if the threat is absolutely minimal. They are not armored well enough to get away with no losses.

In any case, you leave them to assemble and move out on your own. You wonder what happened to the captured miners. Were they enslaved? Or do the tribals plan to sacrifice them? And why now? Why didn’t they appear before? This is the first time villagers have even heard of their existence. Did they recently move into this area of the frontier? Who knows?

You have finally arrived back and to the mine and found the footprints leading into the forest. From one hand you have no idea of the state your subjects are in so you better get there fast. On the other hand, you might want to approach this slowly and carefully so that you don’t get ambushed by the entire tribe.

Alright, writing. That would be the last post for this week.

You decided to start fast but try to sneak when you find any evidence of the locals. At first it was relatively easy to keep track of the clear footprints, but while you were looking for them the rain started to pour which made the prints difficult to detect and eventually it completely washed them away once they passed over the harder ground.

You were almost up to start circular search before you remembered that you have extremely sharp senses. Maybe you could use them better? You don’t get much out of vision in the thick forest and the sounds in this area mask the sounds these people would make at such distance. However, dogs can follow the smell even after the rain. So you could try to do the same...This looks stupid, but if it works it is not stupid, so you try drop on your four and try to follow the smell to the best of your ability. Good thing you had enough foresight to get yourself a pair of gloves with your armor.

This causes you to slow down drastically and that saves you from being found. Your wolf’s pelt masked you from a tribal sentry whom you’ve spotted slightly too late, but you’ve managed to turn back and go around without being spotted and eventually you’ve found it. The local village.

The village is primitive but it still houses almost 360 people at least judging by the houses. It seems that these people build tiny huts made out of tree barks and branches around thick trees for support. They don’t have a wall and you can’t see a single tribal with metal tools or gear. You can also see some carvings on the trees, a lot of which depict the Blight of Farsalos, your first monster kill. So, they were having trouble with it before it moved to your village? Makes sense why they never came to visit then.

These people seem to be hunter- gatherers but you have no idea how they can sustain a population so big. They don’t farm, they live in a dangerous area and they lack access to the most basic metal tools. A lot of the people seem to be armed men and women while a good chunk of the population seems to be laboring with supervision of an armed guard. Are those… slavers? Wait, if they have slaves then they should get the people from somewhere, right? That would mean they probably raid nearby settlements for supplies and slaves if that’s true. You’ll need to check that before you run into conclusions though. Maybe you should hide and observe for a while before making your move…

And that’s it for this week’s session. Feel free to discuss and ask any questions you have. Please note that there will be a shift in the schedule again. Next week I will finally wrap up with university and move to an intern position which means no more dumb Saturday classes. We will be switching back to full Saturday session instead of two separate days. I will post an update in the thread, discord and twitter next week when I finalize the schedule. Hope that’s fine and see you next time.
