Rain. Cold, sharp, and heavy it pours over you. The forest dark and quiet of life sings a cacophony to you as the adrenaline wears off, a growing numbness creeps thru your bones. A look heavenward greets you with a miserable swirling sky pierced occasionally with flashes and bangs. The moon, even full, cannot pierce the blanket of anger this storm brings. Fitting, considering your dire straits.

Looking down once more you witness the rended form of your mentor, face down in a muddled pool of blood and viscera. A beast, as scared and unprepared as you two, had launched itself towards you in a flurry of fang and claw from the darkness. Your mentor had stepped in, shoving you aside to take the blow. The blow meant for you...

Knee meets mud, as strength leaves your legs. Well over a decade you two were together. This man had done so much. Risen you up higher then you had ever been destined for. A teacher, role model, father, and more. And in one swift move it all came to an end. You hadn't even the chance to say goodbye.

>Remember the mission, their will be time to mourn.
>Try to be strong. Ignoble as it may be, we all must die sometime.
>Let it out. This man has done far to much for you to hold back.

The futility of these last few minutes weigh on you as a tonne, making breathing difficult. You know what you need to do, you know that this is far from the
safest place to do this. It doesn't stop the tears from coming. Furiously you pound your fists into the soft earth before throwning your face once more to
the sky to scream your lamentations. Anger, rage, frustration, sadness, fear, and more come together to rival natures fury within your bosom.

This man needs to be grieved for. Nothing else matters at the moment.

Minutes go by. The urge to vomit dies down. Between ragged breathes you slowly come to your senses, remembering what you two had set out to do, what you are.
As if to call you to attention a flash of green and red lights up the night. The people of Childre have begun their part of the operation. The Burgundians not
far behind. You will be expected to pull double weight now.

That's right. You are a Scarecrow. You are out here to do what normal citizens can't, be the wall between them and the darkness. He would be ashamed of you if he
could see this. Pull yourself together! Another flash, blue this time, reveals a glint in the corner of your eyes. Rising slowly you approach and reach for your weapon...

You pick up the slab of iron you call a weapon. Warfare's Maestro. An old design originating from the royal guard of Arcades. With a twist of your arm you plant the blade on your off-hands forearm, causing the blade to expand out into an equally intimidating shield. A following click of a button and a swift motion sees the shortsword drawn from the main body. "Good, none of the mechanisms have been damaged." You sigh,
slamming the blade back into the shield, which promptly folds in on itself. Detaching it from your arm you holster it to your back and turn towards your mentors corpse. You can't afford to waste supplies returning him to base thanks to Burgundy's elites ripping thru before your arrival. However, you will not leave him to be chewed on by any passing carrion feeders.

You stoop, grabbing a small shovel from your pack, and start to dig. Thankfully the dirt is wet making the effort minimal. After, you kneel to turn over the body. Cold lifeless eyes stare past you into oblivion, you close them. Tho it doesn't sit well with you, you begin to rummage thru his pockets for various items you may use.

Acquired;
1 health drink
2 herbal cures
2 caster shells (unknown marks)
1 farcry tube

Placing the body into your makeshift grave You decide to take a memento, something to carry with you to remember him by. You take his;
>tricorn hat
>scarf
>amulet
>ring
>book

Along with his favorite pocketwatch. Opening it you see a quote inscribed within. It's the one he used all those years ago to describe your budding skill;
>"Not all who wander are lost."
>"never stop learning, because life never stops teaching"
>"Stars, hide your fires; let not light see your black and deep desires"
>"Hunting is not a sport. In a sport, both sides know theyre in the game"
>"The scariest monsters are the ones that lurk within our souls"

You gingerly close the watch putting it into a pocket, then you begin to push the mud over him. Offering a simple prayer as the only service.

Abilities gained;
>two handed fighter (novice)
>two handed finesse (novice)
>shield fighter (adept)
>loremaster (novice)
>horrifying (boon)

As you dig, you remember when he said those words. "The scariest monsters are the ones that lurk within our souls". He was initially worried about the way you carried yourself. "A Scarecrow must use everything at their disposal, even fear. But, we must remember that we do so for the people. In them we must inspire more. Know when to bring the monster out, and when to bring the man. All tools have there use when the time is right. Remember these words" You will, but, for now? Down to business. You pat the soft mound of dirt one last time before getting up and throwing on his, no, your scarf.
Another flash of color. You'll need to hurry if you're to get into position. Taking out a small bowl you scoop up some of the rain water and place the bowl down on a fallen tree. You pull a blade and vial from your pack and set to work. First, drawing a trickle of blood you let it drip into the bowl which promptly turns a red hue. Afterwards you let a drip of ink fall from your vial which causes the water to change into a smooth purple. "Come. I wish to speak."
As if on cue you see them. Slowly, surely, small humanoid figures begin to show wthin the purple swirling liquid. Spirits of the long since dead, drawn to the mixture from the air around you. Soon these shapes begin to coalesce into more defined features. Hair, a face, lips, then eyes opening. One entity now taking up the "window" you've opened.

"Hello, Scarecrow."

The Handler, or at least yours. Her(?) features plain, voice hollow, hair billowing like a candles flame or rising steam behind her. She had been assigned to you by the Commonwealth at your anointment, and with you ever since. A conglomeration of souls that aided in the maze work of bureaucracy that your life consisted of.

"Scarecrow? So soon you call in. Why do you look so sad? HQ is on silent until the operation enters phase 2, but I am here to help however I can."

Yes. Operation Decoy. Every twenty odd years or so cloud moths lay their eggs on the upper levels. This wouldn't be a problem, except from the moment the eggs crash and hatch the larvae don't stop eating. And they will eat anything. After finding they would drop near the Steep along the edge of Childre the Commonwealth focused as much as they could on diverting these things away from population centers. Scarecrows and the military will use lights and noise to pull the creatures away. Thankfully, Childre primarily uses their "fireworks" to communicate over distances. Convenient.

"Master has been KIA. Reporting in to state my intentions to leave a beacon and pursue the objective."

"Huh?!" Was that a gasp? Surpising amount of emotion from a programmed ghost. "Are you hurt as well? How... how are you doing?"

"Fine." A partial truth, "Nothing that will keep me from the objective."

"Are, are you sure?" Looking down, she closes her eyes before slowly looking back up at you. Curious behavior. "Very well Scarecrow, continue onto point 2b and..." A flinch, "Correction! We have received info that one larvae has broken thru, roughly two miles from current location. South South-west. Tho towns have gone dark it may still plow straight into it. As the closest outrider do what you must to prevent this. You will receive no backup. Orders received?"

"Roger. I'll run interception immediately, over." You reach for the bowl to dump the contents when,

"Scarecrow!" You pause, looking curiously at the ghost in the reflection. "come back, please. I don't wish to lose both of you tonight."

A moment passes, you ponder these strange words before a chuckle escapes your lips.

"I will."

"That scarf looks good on you."

"Heh." with that you toss the water. tightening the scarf about your neck you look out over the landscape. "Two miles? How do I wanna do this?"

Ok lads, I'm back. Someone thought it would be a good idea to warm their apartment with the oven. Idiots!
If anybody is still here this is the character sheet we'll be using for this mission, you guys will be able to change things later. Don't worry.

I'm using a slightly tweaked version of Symbaroum if anyone knows the system. I gave a brief show of what everything does and while I get to writing I'll answer any questions you may have. Most of it will be me, but here's a brief lay out;

Roll under d20, best of three unless otherwise stated. dc is relevant stat modified by opposing stat anywhere from -1 to +5, 0 being neutral.
IE: to hit a motherfucker you will roll accurate modified by their quick, and to avoid an attack its quick modified by their relevant stat.

Toughness is health, it hits 0, you start bleeding out. Cross that river when we get there

Pain threshold is if anyone takes that much damage from one attack, they either go prone or take another immediate attack

Stress threshold is accumulated fatigue were you start to notice it. Full stress is your resolute score. We'll cross that bridge as we get there.

I will post the Symbaroum books at some point. But right now I'm gonna get to writing. We gonna try and kill a motherfucker! Any questions feel free to ask!

Taking a deep breathe, you ready yourself for the task ahead. Putting away your things and taking one last look at your mentors burial site. Readying a shriek flare you whisper one final goodbye. But, wait. No. You know the final words you must speak, his favorite thing to say. A smile on your face you raise your caster high,

"Time to cut the Meat!"

And your off, not once looking back even as the flare screams into the air. You dash forward vaulting and dodging your way thru the dense trees and shrubs of these cold lowlands. Within minutes you come upon an area disturbingly devoid of plant life. Looking left and right it seems a blade swept thru here, but from the way things are broken you see the way you need to go. As you make you're way along you debate the way you should go about this. Scare it off? No, you've no idea if it will even flee. And even if it did it may well keep heading towards civilazation. You ponder getting it to pursue you. Again no, it might not as it'll have plenty of easier to reach food and if it should catch you, it would barrel over you. These things are supposed to get big. No, if it should be a fight better to end it swiftly. The night is young and you may have to keep doing this. Swift kill, minimize hassle.

Sprinting along you soon come upon the beast in all its hungry glory. As tall as a carriage and twice the length you watch as it uproots and devours an entire tree. This thing is a newborn? Not that you stop, or even slow. No, tonight will be a red night and you will let the beast run free. With a mighty bellow you;

It Doesn't see you, does it even have eyes? Those tendrils are busy hold the tree to its mouth. Perfect.
Not missing a stride you draw your blade over your left shoulder, sliding it down your arm till it locks into place then pulling free the blade and slashing out at the creatures leg. A test slash, nothing more, proving you right that its chitin is to thick for your blade. You'll have to either put more weight behind your swing or look for weakpoints.
However! You won't miss turning this fights tempo into your favor. You ride the momentum of the swing, spinning a bit to put your back towards the front of the startled beast. As it realises it's being attacked and rears up you resheathe your blade and with two hands bring your shield up into its still exposed head with a grunt. You hear a crunch as the creature, squealing, is thrown to the ground and begins to thrash around. A good opening move, how to follow up?

Attack as you are (attack)
Bring out the greatsword (transform, attack)
move to a better spot (move, attack)
fire the caster (move, attack)
free

Damaging the same spot repeatedly can potentially change parts of the fight. Breaking/removing limbs can weaken or flat out remove enemy combat actions. It way also weaken or remove armor values, making it easier to wound. this however can be harder to hit as the monster will likely try to protect these parts. Food for thought.

This is my last post tonight. I plan for Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday after work to be my run nights. I will shoot for 1:00-1:30 EST. Let me know what you think, I need critique.

I hope to see you all Tuesday.

Qm here, I'm phone posting. We can combine these if everyone agrees. Right now you have advantage, which is a +2 to hit and damage. Targeting a weak spot will lose you advantage, as you will be trying to work thru it's thrashing legs to get to it.
Also, remember that with the greatsword you cannot move and attack in the same turn. But, you roll best of 4 instead of 3 for damage.

Food for thought.

Apologies. I won't be able to update tonight. However tomorrow I'll try to be on as soon as I get home from work.

In the mean time, we have top of the order. Lets get thru your part of the turn at least. Will you:
>turn towards the loud crashing, brace for it
>turn towards the crashing, prepare to counter
>turn towards the crashing, fire the caster
>Attack the wounded beast, try to finish this
>transform and attack the wounded beast

Strike will the iron is hot!

While another blow to the head may end this fight you don't wish to tempt fate with all those legs thrashing around wildly. No, better safe then sorry. You practically slam home the lesser blade, detaching and bringing the assembly around for an overhead slash. Flawlessly trained and polished technique sees your weapon coming down just as it completes its transformation in a meteoric strike of destructive power.

"SKRRREEEEEAAAACCCKKKK!"

To crush into the squealing carapace of the beast. It serving as little resistance. Shell, flesh, and fluids fly free as you push deeper into it's soft innards. Riding the momentum sees you take almost two legs along with a decent chunk from the larvaes left flank. A potentially crippling blow. However this merely insights it to lunge in your direction, to which you bring your blade around, catching the bite meant for your shoulder. You roll with the blow, spinning with a sidestep to come around to face the backside of the cornered bug. It begins to writhe, and starts to fold itself? You bring up your blade for another shot, hoping to finish this before it can try anything. However, you manage to catch what sounds like crashing trees coming from... behind you?

"Skreeonk!"

Another one!? Your report only claimed one had broken the blockade, what are the Burgundian and Childred military doing? Is it something else? Is it responding to this ones cries? Has something happened? Is the operation compromised? Will you be able to handle two at once? Is someone pursuing this one? You find it difficult to maneuver enough already with this thing, but the shorter blade might not have enough punch. What if... if... No matter. With a deep breath you clear you mind of the unnecessary clutter. The excess thoughts. These are the mind-killers. These will only slow you down. Let them pass over you, thru you. Remember what matters.

"All that matters is the here, this instant. Make it count. No second chance."

You turn, as one in mind and purpose. Death. Ignoring the mewling bug at your back you strain your senses trying to pick up this new problems locale. One breathe, two breathe, and there! A crash, a bang, as the beast plows out from the treeline. Another larvae and it's charging headlong towards your location. If its aim is its injured sibling you are directly between them. Making it a terrible place to be. You bring up your blade and slide one foot forward feeling a slight grin sprout. Some may say you're right where you need to be.

It is far faster then you had anticipated!

You throw yourself off balance, swinging you and your weapons combined weight to the right side of the charging beast. Slamming your blade into the dirt sees you stopped abruptly. But, better some discomfort then being stuck in deaths jaws. Its feelers are now waving around franticly trying to sort out your new location as it turns its head left and right. These things truly must rely on other senses to manuver. A look to the injured larvae reveals that it had rolled up, covering its face and wounded section.

What is that blasted thing doing? The healthy one continues to thrash around looking for you. You shimmy over more to its side, trying to avoid the questing tendrils. You have a second to breathe and decide to fight fire with fire. Drawing your caster in your off hand you pop it open and slide in one of your unmarked shells. This could be anything, cross your fingers!

Pointing the barrel you pull and hold the trigger. What starts as a low moan quickly reaches a high pitched scream as the chamber, and shell, start to spin and glow with barely contained power. Spirits drawn to the prayers and spells weaved onto the scroll within your shell force you to brace as your whole arm starts to quiver from the strain. Whatever it is, you are not attuned to its disipline! This is gonna hurt!

BANG! All the pent up energy releases in a burst of purple hues that rocket forth into the wounded beast. The other turns to you, expected, nothing wouldn't notice that action.
It moves to act just as you notice the sigils appear on its sibling. Bend will! Perfect! A wonderful edge to gain in this fight.

>you must either use one of your actions to concentrate on the spell, or roll a resolute test. IE; attack, concentrate or move, concentrate etc.
>the afflicted target will do what you command it to, but only one action per turn
>right now, the beast has used its carapace ability to double armor by sacrificing all actions. This ends as soon as it does anything.

Elation quickly turns to shock as you feel the jolt from the spell link to your subconscious. A small figure appears in your peripheral giving you a physical link to aid in concentration.
Something that is quickly tested as you need to bring up your blade to catch the drooling maw of the larvae bearing down on you. Growling with effort you try to force the beast back and off of you. Unfortunately its ever writhing face tentacles begin to wrap around different parts of you and your weapon. It's trying to ensnare you! Worse is the figure, a haunt you think is the term, on your shoulder becomes fainter with your slipping thoughts.

You try to focus on the figure, and thru it your target, willing it to aid you. It seems to become more corporeal. Fight. Fight for me you think. And, with worrying slowness, the beast starts to move. Perhaps it's far to gone to be of much help?

"Skree!"

As if to answer your lack of faith it suddenly lunges forward with a burst of speed, plowing headlong into its siblings side. The surprised bug quickly detaches from you and turns towards this new assailant. The two seem to wrestle for dominance and while your sudden ally is helpful, surely the wounds will affect it in this protracted brawling.
Best to finish this.

bite5- 4 armor= 1 damage

>Attack, concentrate

You step back from the escalating melee before you, rolling your shoulder to help alleviate the prickling from your caster shot's recoil. Bringing it up you pop the used shell and eye it on its downward arc. The markings don't match either of your other shells. Great. Better not to push your luck with another one then.

Turning back to your enemies sees your initial worries unfolding. Unfortunately due to its prior injuries the bound larvae is slowly and surely being overwhelmed. Thou not without giving as hard as it gets. Poor thing. Taking a moment more to read ahead you pounce. This was far from your smartest move, but you needed to see this end. Bounding up to the healthier beast you hop up onto its rear area and leap just as it is sent reeling by a body slam. You bring up your blade, the swing of which sees you pause in mid fall, and bring it down right where you assume the neck begins. A crushing blow that shatters carapace and brings both of you down, but you catch yourself. Bending your knees to soak the fall you throw your weight to spin into an upward swing that connects roughly under the prior hit. this passes into the softer underside and punches up thru and all the way out, beheading the beast. It also throws you to the ground unceremoniously, but whatever. Better discomforted then dead. The body lands aside you in a thunderous collapse. Followed almost immediately by your erstwhile ally. who proceeds to begin feeding in disgusting earnest. Seems cannibalism is an option.

A wave coming from your peripheral as you jump slightly, until you realize its only the haunt. It has started to fade slightly. You focus on it and the bond, but to no avail. Seems the spell will expire soon. That could be a problem that you'd rather not have to deal with. But what to do? You could will the larvae to head back towards the boundary set by the organization. However the beast before you is heavily injured. You can see the laborous breathes it takes between each mouthful. Now that the adrenaline of battle has started to wear off you seem to find it harder to consider the obvious. You had originally planned to kill it, hadn't you? Was this because you've bent it to your will? Does that really not sit well with you? Were you that soft? No, it has to be done. "Finish what you've started." As the old man say if he was here. For a moment you consider ending the spell to at least give it a fighting chance. You laugh to this. Honor does not exist to these creatures. They are instinct fueled animals. Besides, you had been lucky not to suffer any true injury in this engagement. But the night was long, and you'd no idea what else it will entail.

"Come, lay down." You speak to it, as thou it was a pet or something. Strange. It obeys, utterly subsumed to your command. It walks up to you and lays down on it's healthier side.

"Forgive me the suffering. Mayhaps luck simply wasn't in your favor." Placing the blade upon your back you kneel next to the panting larvae. It twitches slightly, showing its clear discomfort. You pop out the shorter blade and, with one hand on the beast, position the tip right at the beasts heart.

And pause. Why? What makes this suddenly so different? Different to its dead sibling not twenty feet away. To what you had been working towards only a few minutes ago. You had let the monster run free, but now the man had taken the reins. You had never really thought about it till this moment. The weight of a life, man or monster. Should it be so easy to take? Looking down at the haggard results of your work you see the sigils begin to fade. Turning to your side you see the haunt looking at you, into you, expectently. Taking a deep breathe you find your resolve and sink the blade to the hilt. A jolt, tremble, whimper, and then nothing. It is done.

"Finish what you've started." You say low, withdrawing the blade and flicking it clean, "If I am called, I will answer." Seemingly satisfied, the haunt fades without a sound.

>You have resolved to do what you are called for. But never in malice, spite, or hatred. Life is sacred. You know your duties.

A moment passes in silence before fresh movement catches your attention from the tree line. A new haunt sits before a great pine, holding a rolled parchment. Orders from hq? Trotting over you take up the note, unrolling it and giving it a quick review. It reads;

"To all outriders along the Eastern front we give warning. A large monster, order Naturia, has been provoked and has begun rampaging along the hold lines of the Childre forces fending off the wave of Cloud moth hatchlings. Immediate action has been requested by any available outriders to intercept and deter/destroy the target. All rights of scavenging and a 5000 bounty have been enacted. As of this letters sending, it is believed to be an adult Aggrex-Tok. Should you accept be cautious and plan accordingly.

-HQ, "

Accept?
>yes
>no

Great. That would explain the hole the unreported larvae slipped thru. This could be a bigger problem then you can handle, how to go about this? An Aggrex- Tok, or Herdsman of Cinder, is one of the apex monsters of Childre.

I'll start up a fresh thread this Saturday. I hope to see you all there again. I will be around to answer any questions.

>As I understand we are acting as containment for some guys trying to escape right? And those things are big ass monsters.
The term scarecrow was picked up from the common folk. It's a catch all term for hunters, slayers, witchers, inquisitors, etc. They are the ones that bump back. Keeping the darkness at bay, like a scarecrow to crows. You're basically a monster hunter/ witcher/ bloodborne hunter mash up that uses "science" and mysticism to fight shit normal humans could never hope to.
The Organization covers most of the bureaucracy so you can focus on doing your job.
The organization is a joint effort by a group of nations, the Commonwealth, to stick together and benefit from a more militarized defense. The nations are; Burgundy, Childre, Arcades, Heim, Norlans, and Imporio. Each is as distinct from each other as you can get, but united because the world is a hard place. Currently, you are helping Childre, who have had 20+ foot caterpillars hatch within their borders. Dropped in from the sky. This happens about every thirty years.
>Our guy is a scarecrow, how many more like him exist around?
The organization is a fairly expansive group, but active hunter wise? Probably only a few thousand. Hell, the operation you're on now? Aside from military bodies moving, there's only about a hundred scarecrows running around. And only about 2/3 are juiced up. You for example are not.
>Is it only one organization or are there more?
The Org has been around for a good while. It has seen fads and movements come and go. Some have changed the structure significantly, others die a whimper. You will see and hear about them throughout the quest. These are called Kindreds, but its all still the Org.
>What separetes him from other warriors.
I mentioned the term "juiced" before. This is the nickname for the slew of concoctions you are conditioned to imbibe to do the crazy shit you do. Stuff like barely needing to sleep, rarely needing to use the bathroom, or not needing to eat unless you feel like it. But, once it wears off, you have a miserable "cool down" time of about a week. It will have mechanics behind it. I'll talk more when we get to that point. One example, drinking a "potion" heals us, but the strain it puts on the body sees us gain stress. We could potentially chug them all day, a normal person would get knocked on their ass in one sip. This is because, even after the alchemy and such, it has literal spirits in them. Ironically, these is why alcohol is called spirits. You drink shit that can kill you, you just have a higher tolerance.
