Hey y'all. If you couldn't tell, this quest will be taking place in the well known DC Comics universe. Here there be gods and monsters, magicians and aliens, and even a clown or two. But bear in mind that due to various time travel related and or multiversal shenanigans, the DC world is ridiculously complex as a whole. So I'll be running a very streamlined version of it. And to be up front about it, it will likely be shaped by my own likes, dislikes, and biases.
Oh, and aforementioned shenanigans won't be making an appearance.
Mostly.

>The Rules
I will write up the life of our young hero Morgan Barrett, a high school student who has just truly begun his career as a superhero in Gotham City as Gray Ghost, you will be given prompts to direct him.
Some things will require a dice roll to determine success or failure or something else entirely. Write In's are absolutely encouraged but I reserve the right to torpedo anything.

The voting period will last around 30 minutes or more after the prompts are given. I will then announce the voting closed and write up the chosen response.

>The Dice
We will be using 1d100 ninety percent of the time here. Best of three. We might use something else when applicable. I'll be running with a loose sort of degrees of success/failure thing here so no real DCs.

Let's have some fun.

This is not going at all how you pictured. Honestly, you didn't think you'd get much out of shadowing Rose Wilson. Maybe a vague clue or two about the whereabouts or activities of Deathstroke. But even then, that takes time. Investigating and all that. But this situation is moving fast.

Right now, you're having a chat with a man only known as Wintergreen, someone who's obviously very close to Deathstroke in some capacity. He cares for the guy's daughter as if she were his own. And he keeps serious tabs on her, and Deathstroke himself. Not only that, but he claims he can tell you everything about who's responsible for the attack on her life.

"Wade Lafarge." He repeats. "In short. He's a psychopath. Obsessed. A man possessed with the need to destroy Slade Wilson and everything he's ever loved. Which includes more innocent life than you'd probably expect."

Jackal's name is Bill Walsh. Something doesn't add up here. But you'll let him finish his story. "Before I elaborate any further, you need to know something. Wade is Slade's half brother. He holds a lifetime of resentment for the man. And it's driven him to some very extreme measures."

Robin crosses his arms, not feeling this story so far. "Records never say anything about a half-brother."

Wintergreen doesn't lose a step though. "They wouldn't. Wade was born out of the country, the old fashioned way. In his mother's home. And his records were scrubbed clean after his involvement in black ops. May I continue?"

>Continued
>>
>>3206576
Robin concedes the point and the old man continues. "This wouldn't be the first time that he's struck at Slade like this. I assume you are aware of his son, Jospeh Wilson. His personal grudge lead him to kidnap his own nephew, in an effort to drive a permanent wedge between Slade and his then wife. Joseph... did not survive the encounter."

"Deathstroke's own brother murdered his son?" You honestly felt like not much could surprise you anymore. Talking gorillas, flying pyromaniacs, blood magic. But this, you guess it's just so... human.

Wintergreen shakes his head, a solemn look fixed on his face. "I still don't believe that is how he wished for things to end but- here we are. And now he's back, intent on robbing Slade of the two things that still mean anything to him. His family, and his identity as Deathstroke."

As you and the team absorb all the new info. Wintergreen starts to make his way back downstairs. "I understand if you deem further cooperation with me to be unfavorable. The door to the safehouse will be open to you for a while longer though." He walks away, reaching the top of the stairs before turning around. "And thank you, you probably saved Rose's life."

If there were ever a time for a team huddle, this is it. You all gather in a circle, deciding that the mind link is still safest for now. Robin takes point in the discussion. [Gotta say. I'm not sure what to think. Wintergreen painted a pretty clear picture of what's goin on. LaFarge is probably our guy.]

[And yet, it conflicts with what Miss Martain learned earlier.] Aqualad points down to the safehouse stairway. [Before we decide on a plan of action, we need to decide how we interpret the information we've been given. I believe there is at least some truth to what he said. It's too well constructed to be a total lie.]

The link becomes crowded with chatter as everyone gives their two cents on this. Ultimately, you feel like-

>[Wade has gotta be our guy, he's got much more motive than Jackal.]
>[Jackal is probably the one. M'gann has never been wrong when picking someone's brain.]
>[It's probably both, in some capacity. We don't really have the info to prove either wrong.]

[It's probably both, in some capacity. We don't really have the info to prove either wrong.] Honestly, it feels like a non-commital answer but it's true. You can't discredit Wintergreen or prove what you know 100%.

Miss Martian nods, agreeing. [I think we should work with him. I can't tell for certain that he's telling the truth but, if he wasn't lying then he has plenty of stake in this himself. And I wan't to help Rose.] She crinkles her nose in disgust. [Even if it means helping Deathstroke.]

[Agreed.] Aqualad stands with her. [This is the best way to discover more about Deathstroke's activity and motive.]

Speedy isn't so sure. [Are you kidding me? The old guy admitted to working for Slade! He's probably just as much of a murderer as he is, you wanna cooperate with someone like that?]

[I'm with Speedy on this one.] Artemis says. [He may not be a super villain but he's like, a super villain's sidekick. That's just about as bad. Plus, it'll give him a perfect oppurtunity to stab us in the back. I say we work the Jackal lead.]

Wondergirl seems undecided. Coiling her lasso around her fingers and back, in deep thought. Robin just sighs. [Look, I'm making a decision. We're going to-

>Pursue the Jackal lead, M'gann has never been wrong before.

[We're working with Wintergreen.] Robin decides. There's plenty of complaining from your pair of archers but Robin holds up a hand and they quiet down, eventually. [I know. I'm not saying we blindly trust the guy but Aqualad is right. This is our best shot at our original objective. Remember that? Found out why Deathstroke is making an exception for us? So we can get back to work on HIVE? The evil secret organization?]

[[Alright already bird boy! We get it! Let's just get this over with.] Speedy pouts. But you'd never tell him he's pouting.

Artemis wants to argue the point more, you can see it on her face. But she let's it go. [Fine. There'd be no point to having a leader if we didn't listen. So what's the game plan with Wintergreen.]

[Just be as careful as possible around him. And don't give him any sensitive information. And for now, that includes what we know about the Jackal] With that, the little team meeting comes to a close. And you all start making your way down into WG's hideaway.

But something crosses your mind as your walking. [Hey, Miss M, keep your mind open for any hints. Not telling you to go digging around but try and pick up what you can.]

She agrees pretty eagerly. [Okay! I'll make sure to try and spot something in his surface thoughts. If he gives anything away, I'll know it!]

Robin hits a button and WG let's you in, no questions asked. He's standing by the now open door, waiting for you. "I'm glad you've decided to collaborate in this effort. Shall we discuss details?" He gestures for you to follow him. His little secret base is exactly that, little. You can hear Rose and an older woman's voice having what sounds like an argument in a language you don't know.

And while the space itself may be modest, the equipment in here certainly isn't. Barbara would go nuts for all this computer gear. WG leads you to a huge monitor and inputs a password before showing you some coordinates. "Now. what I propose is this. You and your team, will head to this location. Where I have tracked LaFarge's activity. And apprehend him. Before Deathstroke can reach him."

>"Okay, let's bag em and tag em."

You raise a hand, interrupting Wintergreen's spiel. "Hold up, I gotta know why's it so important to you than Deathstroke not just off this guy? I mean, I know you work with the guy but you're doing a lot here."

Wintergreen sighs, rubbing the side of his head. "You must understand, I owe the man very much. More than my life. I'm simply trying to keep him from having to do something... extreme."

"If he catches up with LaFarge, they'll fight. And he'll probably win." Miss Martian states plainly, cutting into the conversation. "You don't want Slade to have to kill his own brother. Do you?" She could probably tell because of her powers, but you can't tell. M'gann is perceptive.

He looks at her with wide eyes for barely a second. Nearly imperceptible. Like she saw right through him. But he cracks a smile. "Yes. I suppose I'm trying to save what's left of his soul. Not that I'm a saint. But yes. I'd rather you all take care of Wade. Let him be locked away."

Robin nods, you can tell he's got renewed enthusiasm after hearing he's working for a good cause. "That happens to be our specialty."

Looking back at the screen you can see it's an urban environment. Maybe a leased or abandoned building. If this Wade guy is prepped for a showdown with Deathstroke than you have to take him seriously. "Has he got any backup?"

"He's definitely hired mercenaries to assist in this venture." Wintergreen sneers. "Though they don't carry any distinguishing marks or call-signs. Unusual, as merc companies tend to run on their reputation." The old man sighs, looking almost ashamed. "And I regret to inform you that Wade is also armed with something known as an Ikon Suit. A powerful asset. You'll need to-"

An alarm blares. Snatching everyone's attention away. Wintergreen immediately switches feeds on his main screen to reveal some armored men using a cutting tool to breach Wintergreen's front door. You hear Rose yell from the other room. "What's going on?! Are they back?!"

"Stay where you are! The locks will engage automatically!" Wintergeen is trying to stay composed but seemingly baffled. "How in the world did they completely bypass my sensors?!"

Robin observes the camera feed and looks around. "We're not going to do well completely clustered like this." He looks at you. He want's to know how you'd handle this.

Thinking on your priorities, you decide that splitting up would be for the best. "One team on guard duty, and the other goes on the attack. You, Wonder, and Speedy would be best suited for a counter attack." After some consideration, you also add M'gann to that list. "And Miss M can take them by surprise by phasing through the door."

Robin nods, approving of the assignments and heads for the front door. "C'mon titans. Miss Martian, go cause a little chaos, Speedy, get ready to breach on my signal." The four of them head up and you watch their progress from the monitor. Miss M turns invisible and phases through the door, and reappears suddenly on the other side, sporting several more arms than normal as she tosses three of them around.

On Robin's say-so, Speedy fires an arrow that blows the door off of it's remaining hinges and Robin does a somersault over the archer's back. Tossing smoke bombs that keep the assailants from firing with any accuracy. Now it's time to cut loose. Wondergirl flies and clotheslines the first merc she sees, sending him spinning in the air almost comically.

You smile at seeing your plan come together but the satisfaction is short lived. "Guys! We've got incoming!" You turn to see what Artemis is on about and see the shadows in the corners of the room stretching up to touch the ceiling. You peer into the deep black of the shadows when you think you see movement, and you think you see something. The barrel of a gun.

It rattled off automatic fire and you instinctively disassemble, but of course, that's not gonna help your teammates. But that's the perk of being on a team, what you can't do, other can. Aqualad summons a shield of water just in time. The bullets plink off of the shield as more and more mercs begin to surge into the room through the shadows. Looks like they're alternating fire. Not giving you a chance to strike back and hammering away at Aqualad's shield. He can't hold it forever.

"Aqualad, how fast can you counterattack?" You ask, your plan already forming in your head.

"As soon as the shield comes down." He nods confidently. "But I'm sure you know that won't go well while we're pinned like this."

"That's why me and Artemis are gonna distract em." You glance at your archer friend's quiver. "You got any smoke arrows by chance?"

"In my other quiver." She reaches back and feels her way through the fletching on her arrows and smiles. "But I've something that oughta be just as distracting. What's the plan?"

"Real simple." You return to your smoke like form. "Aqualad, give Artemis an opening to shoot her arrows while I distract them. As soon as they stop firing, make your move."

They both nod and you take it as your all clear signal. You filter out from behind the shield of water and their fire begins to focus on you. Completely ineffectual of course but they try anyway. Once your behind one of the two groups you shift into your heavy form, making a loud thunk when you land on the floor. You take a page out of Wondergirls's book and upper cut the first merc, shattering the lenses on her mask and sending him bashing against the ceiling.

One of them actually catches a ricocheted round off of your body in the should and goes down. While the other group changes priority to you, Aqualad opens a small hole in the shield and Artemis goes to work. She fires arrows that do the usual of sticking to the target but the explode into a sticky foam thta hardens and traps some of them. With that, the constant stream of bullets is gone.

Aqualad dashes forward and forms two tentacles with his water bearers, wrapping up the last two smashing them together, leaving them out for the count. When the fight settles down you realize that it's pretty quiet upstairs. Wintergreen stayed behind Aqualad so he's fine. One look at the camera feed shows the fight upstairs went well. You feel pretty good about executing that so well.

At least, until the screaming starts. You hear what must be Rose's mom screaming and yelling from the locked down room. You try to about the door but the locks are still engaged. "Open this up already!"

"I'm trying! It takes a moment for the panic locks to disengage... there!" You burst into the room, and see the same shadows that transported the mercs in here. Rose is being dragged through it, kicking screaming, a black gloved hand over her mouth. She's going in if you don't do something!

No time to think, or strategize. You've only got time to act. You leap, jumping into the portal after her. For a moment, you're falling, or floating? Maybe you're just falling slowly. Time almost seems to bend around you and you fly into the void. The only sign of life or color is the terrified Rose getting further and further away from you.

You hear a muffled sound, almost like air leaving a tire. An arrow flies by you, and hit's something behind Rose, something you hadn't spotted before. A pair of sharp eyes. The arrow lands right between them. Having been dazed by the strike to his forehead, his grip loosens on Rose and she escapes. Only to begin free falling into the black. You reach out for her, but you hit something before you can reach.

Solid ground? Not so much. More like a chunk of it. Artemis lands beside you, much more gracefully too. "Looks like we both jumped the gun." You say, watching as Rose lands on a nearby floating chunk of obsidian.

Blondie just shrugs. "Wouldn't be the first time I followed you into a inter-dimensional of unknown origins. Besides, I wasn't about to leave you alone."

"Thanks. Let's get Rose, and put the beatdown on this shadowman. Turn this into a win." You pull out your grapnel, and extend a hand. Which she takes. You fly a lot faster than you expected, which may explain that weird feeling in your gut from earlier. Gravity must be more lax in here. Which is clearly to your enemy's benefit since you see a man cloaked in darkness flitting his way between floating islands to get to her.

Then you see Rose, frantically attaching a gun holster to herself, and strapping a sword to her back. When did she get those? The safe room? As you fly, Artemis points out a small chunk of rock. A nice little vantage point.

Seeing your opportunity, you swing around to the small rock and leave Artemis there, she hides behind the slanted surface of it, bow drawn to the limit. When you zip around and start to make a straight line to Rose, you see that you'll likely make it there before the shadow man. You land on the large rock behind Rose who points her blade at you on reflex but relaxes when she sees it's you.

You eye her grip on the sword and the gun holstered at her side. "You know how to use those?"

She nods, trying her best to swallow her fear. "The lessons were going well. Never had to use either on an actual person before."

As you look at the mass of shadows speeding towards you, you hesitate to consider this a person. But it's better to safe than sorry. "Just remember, we're not trying to kill the guy."

Rose narrows her eyes, tightening her grip on her sword. "Even if he's gonna kill me?"

"I won't let it come to that, just follow my lead. We've got support." You jerk a thumb behind you, pointing towards Artemis. Rose nods steels herself for a fight. The shadow man lands in front of you both, and shadows around him seem to calm down. Revealing a unnaturally pale man in dark round glasses, an all black outfit and a top hat. Not exactly what you were expecting.

"Hmm. This doesn't happen often." He says, almost sounding detached from the situation. "Where I come from, manners are worth quite a bit. So I suppose an introduction is in order. I am called Shade." He bows, extending his right hand to the side. "And that girl is coming with me." He points to Rose, who simple readies her sword.

"Not gonna happen." You stand in his way.

"You stand in the realm that is the source of my power. I am not asking. I am telling you." He says with a sigh.

You hear a beep in your ear, and an alert in your goggle's hud tells you Artemis is hailing you over comms. "Tell Rose to cover her eyes on my signal."

He chuckles at your guesses. "Something in between. A metahuman's power comes from within. A magician, from without. I am neither. But I am connected to the Shadowlands. Which will be your home for an eternity if you do not stop interfering."

"Now!" Artemis yells.

You turn to Rose. "Close your eyes!" She obliges, and you hear Artemis' arrow before you see it. Maybe it flew faster without the extra gravity weighing it down but it flew fast and true. Landing in between you and Shade. It goes off as soon as it hits ground. A powerful flash that seems even stronger in all this darkness.

You have to squint even behind the lenses of your goggles, while Shade is left screaming from the exposure. "Damn! Nice pick, Blondie" Time to capitalize.

Switching to your heavy state, you gut punch Shade grab him by the collar, keeping him from floating off into the void, and slam him int the ground in an arm-bar. But he's got other plans. A shadow portal opens up beneath him and he sinks out of your grasp. You whip your head around searching for him, Only to feel someone behind you and turn to face shadowy tendrils lashing at you.

You brace for impact but they're shattered before they can hit. Rose popping off well placed shots with her pistol. With Rose's support, you charge Shade and ram your shoulder into him, sending him flying into a wall of obsidian rock. But it seems he was wrapping shadow around himself as a shield. He doesn't seem all to injured by the strike.

You can tell the guy isn't used to a straight fight. He's probably trying to separate you and Rose so he can get out of her. And your not sure if those shadows can affect you in smoke form or not.

You stand shoulder to shoulder with Rose, ensuring you don't give him enough room to try and spirit her away. He's standing with his hands behind his back, he's pretty confident. Let's change that. "Rose, light him up."

She looks at you with wide eyes. "I thought you said-"

"He'll be fine. Just do it." She shrugs and fires her pistol rapidly, and he responds just as you hoped he would. He raises a shield of shadows in front of him. So you charge, hoping that he'll fall for this faint. He does. He shoots several spikes of darkness from his shield. You respond by disassembling as fast as you can, splitting around the sides of his shield and reforming behind him.

Shade gasps in surprise as you grab him from behind, you feel his arms nearly break under the pressure of your enhanced strength. Heaving him up, you give Artemis a clean shot. You hear the arrow take flight and whistle through the air. It sticks to Shade's chest and you drop him. He tries to wrench it off but it's already too late.

The arrow unloads a very uncomfortable amount of volts into his body. Eventually, he slumps to the ground, the arrow on his chest smoking. You approach him, and he looks up at you. You hit him with one of Ted's bell ringers. He's out before he even hits the ground. "Did we do it?" Rose asks, approaching his unconscious body carefully.

"I dunno, a better question is how the hell we get outta he-" Your words are cut off as the world begins to churn, you're picked off your feet again and feel yourself pulled upwards along with Shade. When you reemerge. Your shot out of the shadows unceremoniously. Artemis and Rose land on top of you. Which hurt more than anything Shade hit you with. The guy got too cocky.

You shift to your smoke form and slide out from underneath the girls and look up to see your team. Everyone but Robin seems pretty shocked. And the woman who you assume is Rose's mother seems overjoyed. You all stand dust yourselves off, and look at the crumpled form of Shade on the floor.

"Now that our little detour is over. I say we 'ask' this guy for some info." You point a thumb at Shade and he moans in pain.

Rose seems a but worried by the implications of what you said. "I didn't think you hero types did things like that."

"We don't. Got a much easier way. But before we get started." You turn to Wintergreen. "We're gonna need like, every light source you have."

About twenty minutes later, Shade is tied up in a corner of the room completely lit up. No shadows even close to him. Hopefully, this'll keep him from peacing out while you question him. Well, while M"gann digs through his brain.

Wintergreen sets down a chair in front of him, and Miss Martian takes a seat. And closes her eyes. Robin asked her to look for any relevant info to our mission, the people he's working for or with, their capabilities, their intentions. Knowing M'gann, you're confident but. But Shade guy is a real weirdo. Not to mention that she noticed tampering in the minds of the mercs. He could be under suggestion too.

M'gann opens her eyes and sighs. Sounding more frustrated than tired. "I haven't found much new information. Shade is apparently working for both Wade LaFarge and The Jackal." Robin glances at Wintergreen, gauging his reaction. He's got a hard look fixed on his face. He didn't know.

"Anything else Miss M?" Robin asks.

She looks back at Shade and shakes her head, unsure. "I'm not certain, but I do believe I sense much more subtle suggestion going on his mind. He thinks working for them was his own idea."

"Then you'd have to go deeper, then?" Robin comes to the same conclusion as you.

"Mhm. But it won't be easy. This man's mind is strange. It's probably adapted to deal with this Shadowlands place Ghost and Artemis were taken to. I'd have to probe much harder." She looks back at the vulnerable super criminal on the floor. "And something could go very wrong. Can we take that risk?"

>"I think we have to."
>"It's not worth it."

"I've got an alternative." You say, grabbing everyone's attention. "Why don't we just get him to give it up himself? Someone clearly went through a lot of trouble to get him working for them. Meaning he wouldn't have done it otherwise."

Robin seems to like the idea. "I'm all for it as long as we don't have to risk any brain aneurysms. Let's wake him up."

Aqualad steps forward and splashes Shade's face with some water. He sputters awake and looks around to assess his situation. He seems pretty uncomfortable under that light. Maybe you can use that to your advantage. "Hey Shade, we just wanna talk."

"Yes. I assume that's why you've got me strapped down." He looks around at all the faces in the room but you doubt he can see past all the light focused on him.

"You gonna cooperate, or what?" Speedy says, his patience already wearing thin with the constant attacks.

Shade shrugs as best he can with his arms and hands bound. "Ask your questions. We'll see."

"Actually, I've got some information for you." You say, watching Shade's face for any reaction. "Did'ya know you're being mind controlled? Well, I guess that's a bit heavy handed. More like, hypnotized."

"Please, what kind of peon do you take me for. Do you really think that I wouldn't know?" He seems pretty aggravated that you insulted his intelligence.

"I don't know, you're a smart guy. They'd probably have to make you think it was your idea..." He seems to start at that, looking down and murmuring to himself.

He continues to murmur to himself, he goes on and on. Minutes pass. Robin's voice come in over your link. [Well it looks like we've rattled the cage. But I'm sure if anything's gonna fall out.]

[We just gotta be patient.] As if responding to your thoughts, Shade finally stops his internal battle and speaks up. "I believe... you are correct. I have been used."

"And I'm sure that someone like you is unused to being on the receiving end. So, why don't you help us out? We want the people that manipulated you." You go with a classic. Snag a bigger fish with a little fish.

HE thinks it over for a moment, and comes to a conclusion much faster than the first time. "On one condition, you let me go."

You look at Robin. [Whaddya think? He WAS hypnotized. But he's still dangerous.]

[I've got it covered.] Robin walks into the light. "You've got a deal." He cuts the man free with one of his shuriken and steps back. But you noticed the tracker he slipped under his collar.

Shade rubs his wrists and rolls his shoulders once he's free of the zip-ties and rope. "The men you're looking for are named The Jackal, and The Ravager. They want her-" He points to Rose. "Delivered to them as soon as possible. I assume they chose me because I specialize in... asset retrieval."

"And their location." Wintergreen asks. Likely testing his information against Shade's.

"An excellent question. They have two bases. Only one is their true base of operations. The one you found is likely the decoy. Who knows how they would respond to an attack. I can give you the general location but nothing more. I don't have exact coordinates. Don't need them." Shade directs Wintergreen on where to look with his hijacked satellites and sure enough. Merc activity in a building hidden in plain sight.

Shade takes his leave while everyone looks at the screen, walking through a large door shaped shadow that stretched across the wall. "What are we gonna do about him?" You ask.

"Sent his tracking data to the Hall of Justice. They'll sort him out." Robin assures you. You all start to discuss your plan of attack. But Wintergreen notices something on the feed of the dummy location. Two people coming in fast. And they're not on vehicles. You lean in and squint to see to figures. One larger and red. And one slight, and blue. The blue one flits around much faster. but the Red one is going through walls. Not giving a shit about the bullets coming his way.

"This is troublesome." Wintergreen says. A bit of an understatement. "I'm afraid these two might be more trouble than it may seem."

"Why is that?"

"There are missiles headed for their location."

Alright, so I just wanna say that I'll be making the next thread soon. I won't leave you guys hanging for three weeks like last time. I'm just feeling a bit burnt out writing this. That being said. Aight, thanks for the thread Sleepy.
If you're open to asking some questions, what College did Morgan's mom graduate from? I ask this because of how it might influence where Morgan goes for college, even if that is a ways off.
Also, what's Morgan's ethnicity? is it Irish? Italian?, German? A hodgepodge?

I've got some more questions if you don't mind.
What military branch did Morgan's dad serve in?
What kind of jobs did Morgan's dad have after he left?
How did Morgan's parents end up being together?
That's it until next thread.

Army

>What kind of jobs did Morgan's dad have after he left?
He tried private security for a while. Then fell back on the mechanic skills he learned from his father. It didn't pay nearly as much.

>How did Morgan's parents end up being together?
They met before he enlisted. Mom would say it was sort of meant to be. He would say it's because he never stopped bugging her for a date.
