A flame was extinguished in front of your eyes, a life you care about meeting its end. Though you technically “won,” the victory is a bitter and hollow one. No achievement, no grandiose victory, nothing can change the fact that the day Osgood died will live on in infamy.

Revenge on that madman didn’t make you feel any better, because you know in the back of your mind that it wasn’t about payback. You weren’t here to defeat a cruel villain, to be some kind of hero. You were here to protect your friends. And no matter how you try to rationalize it, you still feel the failure.

The clinic reception is as desolate as ever. Not a soul is in here, and there’s no sounds from down the halls. It’s almost comforting…

“But you’re not alone, my friend.” Philonune is here to back you up, no matter how much you want to be alone.

Success doesn’t stop you from feeling like shit. Solitude doesn’t stop you from feeling like shit.

…?

>Go to Constance’s room. That was the whole point of this mission, right?
>Go and search for Boopies. That cat was assigned to you, remember?
>Go to Room 4. Maybe HE’S still there, or someone else might be…?
>Go to Doctor Calamity’s office. Talking to him might help with this.
>Stay here in peace and quiet. Just a few minutes more while you can.
>Write In.

Votes:

Votes are counted until 25 minutes have passed. This rule doesn't apply to the last reply of the day.
Votes that require a dice roll are counted until 15 minutes have passed, so we can speed up the process. Rolls are counted until 10 minutes have passed, so be prepared!

(NEW) Dice Mechanic:

We always roll 1d100s!
Since most people weren’t happy with the system of averaging top four rolls, we’re using best of 2/3/4 depending on the attribute a prompt requires. If Johnny is a genius and it’s a Knowledge based roll, he gets more rolls (Max. 7)! If he sucks, he gets less dice (Min. 2)!

When asked for rolls, I will specify how many you’re going to get. Rolling begins after it’s asked.

Rolling over a 95 is a critical and ignores all other rolls! In the same vein, rolling 5 or under means a critical failure (only for hard rolls and above).

The difficulty of the roll is tied with the effectiveness of the action. In other words, the harder the option the better the result!

Don’t forget that at the end of the day, this is a story-driven quest! What the prompts are describing is more important than the difficulty of the rolls, for results in a fight.

Again, rolls are only counted when they are posted within ten minutes of being asked, so watch out!

You decided to visit Doctor Calamity’s office. Talking with him might help you after… what happened. Knowing where the office is this time, you make it there without being lost. The gentle tap on the door echoes through the hallway, as you hear footsteps and tapping getting closer from the other side.

Doctor Calamity opens the door, still with that cane of his.

“Johnny.” The strange but oddly comforting attitude of Dr. Calamity has evaporated; he must have heard the news. Not to say he looks depressed or anything, but any good cheer he might have had is gone. “Strange, I thought you were going your way with the others in these trying times. What gives?”

“So you heard the news, huh?” You tilt your head down without thinking.

“I was the one who checked his body first. Not even having to use this cane will prevent me doing my job.” Dr. Calamity gives you his trademark smile and opens the door to his office fully. “It doesn’t make it any easier for me to stand up though, so let’s grab some seats, shall we?”

You two walk inside, closing the door behind you. The office mirrors the owner – a creepy exterior of strange eye-catching colors, with an oddly heartwarming feel to it. You can see his many framed degrees hanging on the walls, alongside abstract paintings, some bookshelves filled with rows of heavy encyclopedias and reference material, and a very tall cactus.

There are some photos too, mostly on his desk. From what you make out on the way in, they’re from friends you think you recognize and from places you haven’t seen before. But what really grabs your attention is a large imposing portrait up on one wall. It has a young Doctor Calamity standing next to other people, including a very young Kata with a bob cut. A very ‘walking corpse about to rot any second’ Kata with a small smile on her face.

…This portrait looks like an ancient family sitcom, now that you think about it. Osgood wanted to do horror movies, didn’t he? He would’ve got a kick out of seeing this, that’s for sure.

You two take seats, and the doc places his cane nearby.

“Feeling comfortable?” Your boss wonders. The classy high-back chair you’re sitting on is pretty comfortable.
“I’m not sure I’m able to feel anything right now, doc.”
“Oh dear, that’s not good. Would you like that checked out?” He grins at you. It’s not as unsettling anymore.

“I’ll be fine.” You don’t even remember if you suffered any type of injuries at this point. Doesn’t feel like it. Doesn’t matter either.

“I’m assuming everything went well with the chase. My dear niece has been informing me of everything happening – though since the homicide, I haven’t heard a peep.”
“I wouldn’t be here otherwise. Things should calm down from here on out.”

“That’s good, that’s very good to hear.” Calamity nods to himself. “…To believe such a brilliant young man died inside my own establishment, and I was powerless to stop it. Old men like me think we can make a difference doing so little, sitting on our asses and waiting for you to make a change. I should have done so much more…” Doctor Calamity shakes his head and lets out a heavy sigh. “I didn’t learn a thing from those days, did I?”

He turns his sigh into a chuckle. “But I’m sure you didn’t come here to listen to me ramble and mope, hmm?” He looks back up at you, and that glint in his eyes is back again. “So how can I help this fine young man in front of me?”

What do you say to the good doctor?

>“I think I need to vent. Could you listen to me please? It won’t take long.”
>“I don’t know, that’s why I’m here. I’m… sort of at a loss right now.”
>“Doc, my mother always said I had to do my best, that my friends and family will always appreciate it. But doing my best is not enough anymore. How do you cope with that?”

“If anyone should have done more, it was me. I was the one with him. I was the one with the power to help.” The others needed help there too, and you chose them over Osgood…
“You’re just a young man, Johnny. I know better, or at least I should have known better. I’m just a broken old man, but I will do everything in my hands to help you all. I promise.”

After about a minute of silence, you take a breath to prepare yourself.

“Doc, my mother always said I had to do my best, that my friends and family would always appreciate it. But doing my best isn’t enough anymore. How do you cope with that?”
Dr. Calamity strokes his chin. “…That’s a very defeatist approach. Did your mother struggle with depression or any related issues?”

“No… It was just a thing she said when things didn’t work out for me and my sister. I never felt she said it in that way either.” You never thought about the phrase that way. Mom wasn’t depressed; she always tried to be as cheerful as possible. “In fact, she always tried to find a positive stance every time, no matter what.”

“My mistake. It… reminded me of someone I once knew…” He closes his eyes and shakes his head. “Anyway, as to your question…” Doctor Imminenté Calamity grabs his lame leg. “I’ve been in this career all my life. Since the first moment you become introduced to medicine, you’re reminded every step of the way that you will not save everyone. They teach you early on that a messiah complex is nothing but trouble.” He gives you a serious look, keeping your attention on him.

“Patients come and go. You don’t treat them as anything but clients, whatever their state may be. You don’t need to care about them after they leave these doors. You must become a machine, focus only on procedure and results, leave your doubts and sympathies at the door.”

“…And I must say it’s rather easy to do when you look like me.” He smiles.

“But there are people out there who can bypass that. Your appearance, your attitude… they can see right through you. Those poor children, those old folks that have seen everything, those soldiers who’ve fought too long and gone too far… I’m not cold hearted enough to not care. They ended up being my friends. And I see them all the time, Johnny. The people I couldn’t save from death.”

The good doctor gestures at the room around him. “I see them on my walls. I see them in the sky. I see them in my dreams. I have pictures of them here, watching me work, or just a photo album away. How could I possibly ignore them? They are cheering me on right now. They want me to keep helping people. Because that’s what I want. For each loss and failure, I learned how to save twenty. For every twenty I helped was twenty families who hadn’t lost their children.” The doctor’s shoulders sag. “…But for every one person I save, there’s twenty more in critical condition, already gone by the time I reach them. The reality is I could save thousands and it wouldn’t matter a bit. I can’t bring back the dead. Nobody can. They are pronounced dead and you have to keep going, because there’s always more waiting for you.”

“Johnny, we carry the weight of those who are gone. You cannot simply stop because of one measly death. When it’s your moment to leave this world, you can see them all and nod proudly that their lives made you who you are. That it was worth it to keep going. And who knows? Perhaps you might get a surprise – maybe one of those pronounced dead could come back, and it’s up to you to help her. Then you turn into a silly man like me who now believes in miracles.” Dr. Calamity starts laughing like always. He then stands up with his cane and walks next to you.

“…You mean Constance?”

“Who else? That young girl… Please help me help her. I probably used my only miracle on her and I don’t feel any regret in the slightest.” Dr. Calamity’s cheer returns. He places his hand on your shoulder and looks down at you, fire in his eyes. “I can feel it. That young man Osgood, he would want you to keep going, as his friend Bradford did for him. Accept that and don’t stop.”

“Thanks doc. That means a lot to me.” You wonder if Osgood really does. You wonder if your mother does too, wherever she is out there.

What a passionate speech! What’ll you do now?

>Go to Nina’s room. You need to report back to her.

You stand up from your chair. “No, seriously doc. I really mean it.” You hug the old doctor! He deserves it after doing so much for you and your friends! You don’t remember the last time you hugged another man – hell, you don’t think you ever received a decent hug from one ever, not even your real father and your fake father!
“Haha! It’s okay, my boy. It’s never easy, but it’s all part of life.” He didn’t expect it, but he drops his cane to hug you back. He pats the back of your head too. It feels nice.

The fraternal moment ends, then you return his cane off the floor – both of you smile when he grabs it back.

“I need to get going, doc.” You tell the creepy-looking miracle worker. “Need to check on Constance.”
“I really hope your time here has helped you.” He pats you on the shoulder again. “We have to keep moving forward, Johnny. For the sake of those who’ve gone before.”
“We will.”

You finally leave the doctor’s office. He really had a tough life so far, and despite all that he’s so dependable. It’s easy to go through hell and surrender, but pulling yourself up is the real challenge. Welp, back to protecting Constance! This sadness won’t ever leave you, but it’ll be a good reminder to keep moving forward!

Before going into the mummy’s tomb, you head back to the changing room in the bunker to change into your uniform. Leaving the janitor uniform behind makes you feel a bit nostalgic…

Now you manage to make it to Constance’s room, only getting lost a little! The whole time you were wandering around in the unsettling concrete halls, you couldn’t help but feel you were being watched. Philonune hasn’t warned you about anything though, and he’s constantly watching. Must be your nerves still on edge after the events with Kaz, right?

Heading inside, you have Constance, Lise and… T_T Neko. What happened to Amelia? You could use Bradford Jr. to ask Control Room A about it. Neko has her face buried on the bed, next to Constance.

“Hey, how are you feeling?” Lise greets you with concern. “Also good job out there. No sarcasm.”
“…What’s up with her?” You point at the stray cat drowning in her tears next to your comatose mummy, deciding to ignore her question.

“She’s mourning, I think…” Lise pats her on the head from the other side of the bed. “The others are devastated after what happened, and I’m not exactly sure who’s where anymore. Only Control Room A has someone checking the cameras. Matilda’s out there working her ass off. You don’t need to be here, we got it covered.” She pokes Neko a few times. “Don’t we?”

T_T Neko doesn’t answer. Bradford Jr. looks at you and meows his approval.

“See…?” Lise moves closer to you and whispers in your ear. “I think she had a thing for him…”

Now that you’re back here again, what now?

>Call Control Room A for more information. Where did Amelia go?
>Call Control Room A and voice your concerns about being watched.
>Tell Neko she can go cry somewhere else. You will stay here and guard.
>Just lie on one of the empty beds. Rest the stress away while you can.

[June 4th, 10:17 AM]

The middle of a peaceful neighborhood street in the Eastern District of Pokyo Lokyo. “Perfect” Billy Buonanotte (the man who tried to kidnap Osgood’s girlfriend “Ruby Koroma.”) is carrying a completely drunk Carmella (Uccelli’s childhood friend) on his back. In her hands is a full bottle of some cheap wine. Originally they planned on going to “The Pitfall Arcade” (the one in the Northern District that blew up) but for reasons unknown to Billy, they ended up detouring to this peaceful place.

A ray of unearthly red light beams down from above, going inside Billy’s pocket and stopping there. Somehow, these two have managed to hold onto their crystal piece.

“I hate you… PIG!” An intoxicated Carmella starts chugging her bottle. “You have been taking advantage of… me! Keep your filthy hands… lower!” Her speech is slurred.
“Girl, for the last fucking time, I am not interested. You look like microwaved soup spilled all over my kitchen.” Billy says without missing a beat. “Just keep being you and keep kissing that bottle, or else our asses are going to be in big trouble.”

“Stop grabbing my aaaaaaaaAAAAAAaaaaaaaass, damniiiiiiiiit!!!” Carmella free hand shoots up to Billy’s neck. Her hand isn’t strong enough to hold it for long. “You men are all so FUCKING hoooooooorny… taking advantage of women all the damn time. Can’t you keep it in your pants?! I’m a fiiiiiiiiiine lady, and I won’t s… I won’t stand for it! If you wantapiece of me… you need to… you need to…” Carmella’s whining trails off as she turns to look down a side street to her left.
“What’s wrong, babycakes?” Billy turns to the same direction.

A mature, eccentric-looking woman appears from the snowy street corner, strutting towards the dysfunctional duo! The clicking of high heels on asphalt echoes through the desolate neighborhood… The hoodie covering her hair has a weird emblem on it, her face has too much makeup, and her tits are huge! Definitely going for a decades-old undercover actress vibe. Only thing missing is a pair of shades.

“Looking for trouble? Then congrats, you found it.” Billy takes a defensive stance. “Oy, lady! Snap out of it and get ready!”
“Carmella, get rid of this imbecile right now. We have work to do.”The mystery woman casually ignores the deadbeat!

Carmella smiles at the rude woman, drooling wine all over Billy’s coat. “Suuuuure, Linda. Suuuuure I will…” Carmella summons her partner! It looks like a baby angel holding a flask of liquor. “Buh-bye, biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch!” The entity holds the bottle forward, preparing to pour something right on Billy!

“Whoa whoa whoa, time out!” Billy drops Carmella onto the cold street, making the drunkard pass out. “What’s going on here?”
“D-did you just drop a girl on the street?! In this cold?! What kind of man are you?!” The eccentric Linda loses all composure!

“A man eager for a deal, that’s what.” Billy brushes off his vest. He grimaces briefly, feeling the wet alcohol on his coat. “Please don’t kill me.” All his cool is gone now…

“You’re in no position to make demands. I don’t see any way you can be useful to us.”
“She needs to be drunk to power up, yeah? I can deal with her.” He points down at Carmella, now snoring as loudly as possible.
“…You just dropped her on the floor like a sack of potatoes. Not helping your case there.” Linda is not impressed or convinced.

“C’mooooon, don’t be like that! I’m totally sympathetic to the White Flame cause, ya know?”

Suddenly the ground starts to shake! Some miles away in the city, among the buildings, looms a massive dark beast! It looks roughly four or five stories tall, and it’s lumbering towards the Western District!

“…What the fuck is that?!” A surprised Billy points at it. Something about his shocked expression feels overdone…
“Tch, another one of those… That’s the third one day… Dumb monsters think they’ll win with brute force.” Linda not impressed in the slightest. She shakes her head and turns back to the duo. “So where was I? …W-wait! Where is he? Where’d he go?!”

Somehow, Perfect Billy managed to flee perfectly! Carmella’s still sleeping on the snow, and Linda’s all furious.

“It’s alright, I’m staying. I just need to make some calls and check if everything’s fine. Could you please check the soundwaves again too?” You reply to Lise as you signal Bradford Jr. to come closer. The fat cat floats his way to you. You try hard not to think about it too much.
“Sure, I guess.” Lise doesn’t seem too eager, but obliges either way.

With the exceptionally wide cat ready, you make the call to Control Room A!

“Someone over there? I need to ask some questions. Over.”
“Control Room B here, what do you need? Over.” The ever-professional Matilda responds.
“I think I was being watched down here, could you look into that? I have a bad feeling about this. Over.”

“I’ve been tracking everything down there and have nothing unusual to report. Your ill feelings are unfounded. Over.”

You turn to Lise, who was working on the soundwaves. She nods dismissively at you. Nothing on her end too? Weird…

“Can you tell me how everyone’s doing? And where is everyone? Over.” Where did Amelia go?

“Uccelli moved to Interrogation to oversee the procedure. Henry is accompanying her, and Richard is doing the business. Yu Yan is acting as moral support for Nariko on the second floor. There is an impromptu surveillance team of Amelia and Dr. Katastrophe Calamity, guarding the upper levels. I’m acting as interim chief of staff for the duration, so all information goes through me. I was given the cats’ feed on a smaller computer, but it’s not much and the quality is garbage.” Matilda quickly explains. “You’re at Constance’s room, correct? Over.”
“Yes, I am, ma’am. Over.”

“Stay there, but send one of the girls over. I need someone guarding the bunker at all times. Over.”

Who do you send outside?

You turn to look over at a confused Lise. “You heard all that. Could you go please?”
“Me? Why?” She points at herself. “No offense, but I think I’m better suited staying here than her right now.” Now she’s pointing at Neko.

Exactly why I think you should patrol. We wouldn’t accomplish anything with her outside.” Neko’s muffled grumbling is a good sign you’re right. “And more importantly, you are better suited to take care of this.”

“Why the hell would I be? Didn’t she do a good job just now? Our system was working wonders.” Lise is not budging on this. “…Still is, actually.”
“Yeah, but she got depressed.” You poke Lise’s head a few times, watching her go from being embarrassed to being annoyed. “I know you lost some confidence with what happened the other day, and I know it can be scary, but we need someone useful outside. I’m sure you can do it.”

“Losing confidence?! The fuck are you talking about?!” The girl who lost confidence glare at you. “I haven’t lost shit!” Lise holds her legs tight, gritting her teeth in a scowl.

“Then if you’re so sure, go outside and show me.” You lock eyes with her. “I mean, if you’re soooooo tough and skilled, nothing will wrong. There’s nothing to worry about. Is there…?”
The resistance drains away from Lise. “…F-fine. Whatever man, you’re the expert.” She looks at Constance. “But you better not let anything happen to her, got it?” The accountant girl stands up and walks next to you, putting a hand on your shoulder. “You be careful too, okay tiger? I don’t trust any of these weirdos half as much as I trust you…”

Out of the blue, Matilda starts talking through Bradford Jr.’s collar! Lise jumps in place, and you share a smile with Philonune.

“There’s a cat waiting for you outside. Be careful out there. Over and out.” She listened to all of that without a word!
“Heh… Maybe you’re not the only one…” Lise leaves the room.

You’re now left alone with Bradford Jr., T_T Neko, and Green Coma Constance. Shortly after, Matilda informs you lunch will be handed out soon. You would have had lunch earlier if the whole emergency with Kaz didn’t happen, and if Osgood didn’t suffer a tragic death. Might as well be dinner at this point, sheesh!

It seems things inside the clinic have been sorted out after Kaz was apprehended, and now everything’s almost working normally — except for all the patients being too scared to be out of their rooms.

Neko’s still lying there, sobbing occasionally into her pillow. Perhaps you should say something…?

[Yesterday, June 3rd, 1:12 PM]

The Distant Frontier. Judge Gerard Luther (ex-terrorist) is having a pleasant chat with an unknown dark entity. It’s form is a gigantic black flame, darker than usual. They seem to be striking a deal…

“…So this is the plan: I’ll find a husk for you to control, and you protect me tomorrow from anyone who wants to kill me. Understood? After that you’re free to go.” Gerard Luther puts everything into terms they both understand, giving a small smile. “You just need to sign here, here, aaaand initial there.” A magic contract appears, very similar to the one Johnny signed with Constance and Athelone.

“You won’t interfere with my plans later, correct? I need to punish the traitor! Both of us need to claim our vendetta!” The dark being screams out in a horrible ‘nails-on-chalkboard’ screech. To his credit, Luther is unfazed.
“I would love to see it for myself, but you know… we can’t waste any time anymore.” He shrugs. “Shame. I was close to enjoying the conversation there.”

The dark energy signs the contract with a cruel-looking finger, and Luther signs it with a weird pen. The pact is complete.

Luther’s entity pulls him aside. “Are you completely sure this is a good idea? The other judges may disagree with your actions. Besides—” The Judge entity known as Bruthete begins to speak.
Luther holds up a hand. “How could I not? We were friends before! Besides, I’m rather sure the other judges are acting in a similar manner to guarantee their own safety. Don’t overthink these things!” He waves a hand, all smiles.

“As I was attempting to say… Where are we going to find a suitable husk for her?” Bruthete wonders.

Gerard’s smile wipes off his face. Now there’s a problem…

[Yesterday, June 3rd, 1:42 PM]

The Southern District, in an old house near the Majestic Red Park. Luther opens the front door…

“Yeah, that’s going to be 24 Gor$ for the pizzas, sir…” The Amusing Pizza delivery man asks Gerard. The poor guy looks dead inside for some reason.
The eccentric man takes his wallet out. “Do you accept credit cards?” Luther grins as he takes his card out. His smile is all fake. He then notices the poor delivery man’s mood – and starts grinning for real. “Say, what’s your name again? I’m afraid I didn’t quite catch it the first time.”

“Name’s Lenny Yabe, sir.” The dismal delivery man replies in the same monotone.
“Why so sad, my friend? Other customers giving you a hard time?” Luther looks at the poor sap with mock concern. “Your boss more demanding than usual? Not quite as many tips anymore?”

The guy rubs the back of his head. “It’s been a couple of shit weeks for me, sir. Bad stuff keeps happening to me nonstop. It all started with that kid…”
“How so?” Luther feigns interest. “Do you want to chat inside? I would love to have someone to eat with… And don’t worry, I’m a generous tipper.”

Lenny nods and shuffles inside. What a complete lack of professionalism! As Gerard slowly closes the door behind him, his cheeky grin widens into a ruthless smirk…

[Yesterday, June 3rd, 2:02 PM]

Inside the old house, Lenny Yabe lies unconscious on the living room floor. Luther and Bruthete are preparing to put the malignant black flame on the poor guy’s body.

“Are you absolutely sure this is a good idea? You are willing to sacrifice this human’s life simply for protection tomorrow? Wouldn’t be better if we asked our allies for help?”
Gerard Luther scoffs and kicks Lenny Yabe’s limp body. “Screw him, Brute. This pillock was a police officer! If these savages don’t know remorse for what they did to all of us, then they’ll only know pain/” He turns to his partner, who is holding the parasite flame. It flickers with an erratic pattern, almost anticipating what’s to come…

“Now, we just need to attach this demon to him… So let’s not screw up again, shall we?”
“Taking flames is far more demanding of my power than planting them. Something I assumed you would know by now.” Bruthete’s eyes narrow in clear disdain. “I hope this time we take it slowly. Understood?”

“Get this through that ethereal skull of yours! Gerard Luther does NOT screw up nine times the same way! You hear me, Brute?!”

[A FEW HOURS LATER]

“…Perhaps we screwed up somewhere.”

Luther stares down at Lenny Yabe. He remains unconscious, and his given flame flickers faint. Pitiful, really.

Gerard Luther folds his arms, closes his eyes, and hums while nodding. He opens his eyes, turning to his floating entity. The man has come to a decision…!

“Your fault. Again.

We didn’t screw up, and this is not my fault.” Bruthete insinuates something obvious.
The implication goes over Luther’s head. He gestures at the knocked out pizza guy. “Even the little cripple could do this properly! An underage child is better at this than you are!” The eccentric looks up at the wall clock. “Well, look at the time! We can’t wait any longer with this.”

He snaps his fingers! “Oh yes! I shall call my good friend Charlie! I know he’ll help us out.”

“Didn’t you say you never wanted them in your presence ever again? That if your eyes ever fell on them again, you would make sure they didn’t survive the week? And you call me Brute?” The Judge seethes in place. “You humans are an insipid lot!”
Hypocritical. The word you’re looking for is hypocritical.” Luther takes his phone out and starts dialing his friend’s number. “You should read a dictionary sometime. For a godlike spirit from another world, you’re not very verbose or cryptic or… smart.”

Bruthete facepalms and shakes his head. “I chose the wrong man as my partner…”

[Today, June 4rd, 8:43 AM]

Gerard Luther left the building yesterday after striking a deal with his friend Charlie Ironheart. He found protection with him for the fated day. The unconscious body of Lenny Yabe still lies on the same spot in the living room. All of a sudden, the dark flame on his body expands, consuming his whole body. It keeps growing and growing, collapsing the small house he was kept in…

A vicious building-sized monstrosity emerges from the flame and the ruins. The beast wakes and shrieks one name to the icy heavens. A name called with so much fury, the ground and surrounding buildings vibrate, displacing the snow:

“YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!”

[Meanwhile at the same time, in the new Calamity clinic’s Control Room A…]

“…Neko fall back to 13, Amelia move to 11, Henry wait at 10. With Osgood chasing him, he’ll have no choice but to go one of those ways! …And he’s going to 10! And – ACHOOO!” Yu Yan sneezes loudly. “Damn this cold. Or maybe someone talked shit about me, who knows? Ehem…”

[5:05 PM]

“Hey Neko, you okay? You don’t look so good.”
Neko grumbles something inaudible in response.
“You’re not alone in feeling bad for his death you know.”

The cat girl raises her tear-soaked face. “You didn’t love him like I did!” Neko finally speaks! The nerve of this girl…! “You’re too simple to understand!”

“I actually knew him, Neko. He was my friend.”
“It’s n-not the same, l-losing a mere friend over t-the love of your l-l-life! You don’t u-understand w-what losing your loved one feels l-like.”

You do. But at least in your case, you almost lost her. “I know, I—”
She slams her head back into her pillow, grumbling again. Seriously getting on your nerves now…

“I’m not here to fight with you. We both lost someone valuable.” Even if it’s not justifiable at all for her to act this way.

“…S-sorry for acting like a prick.” Neko deflates. Her face doesn’t move from the bed, but you can hear her better. What’s up with the mood swings? “I sometimes justify my anger in my own mind, so I can lash out onto others without feeling guilty. But later, I still feel bad.”
“I see. It’s something you need to work on.” You would pat her head, but you don’t know how she’ll react. A second stab wound maybe? “Thanks for being honest with me.”

“…Why did he have to die?”

“He didn’t. That’s what makes it worse.”

T_T Neko starts sobbing louder. The wet sheets might be an issue for Constance when she wakes up later.

“Tell me about him, what kind of man was he?” The depressed Neko asks between breaths.

Before you could answer her inquiry, another message comes through Bradford Jr.! It’s Matilda yet again!

“Johnny, interrogation’s over. Richard’s leaving now. With Nina’s permission, he was given the choice to bring one other flame user with him on his mission to help another Judge. Are you up to the task? I shouldn’t say this, but you’re our strongest asset.” You hear things being moved around on her end. “I wouldn’t accept if I were you. Not unless he paid in advance.”

How do you respond?

>Reject the offer, you have a contract to fulfill! You’re going to protect Constance no matter what! Besides you have a bad feeling…

“I’ll ask again: Are you going or not? Over.” Matilda doesn’t give you further time to think! But it doesn’t matter, you’ve already decided…

“Sorry, I have to be here to protect Constance – not only because I have a contract, but because I need to make sure she stays okay. One mistake, and all we did today would be for nothing.” Those sacrifices won’t be wasted! “Besides, you could send Henry instead. Over.”

“Heard you loud and clear. I’ll let them know. Over and out.” Matilda sounded relieved. Guess she doesn’t have much hope for the rest of the team.

Neko grabs Bradford Jr. after the call’s done and puts him on her lap. She stars caressing the cat, then Neko’s pupils abruptly change shape and she starts meowing. Bradford Jr. looks back up and starts meowing himself! This must be Neko’s ability at work. It’s extremely unsettling to watch and listen to. Humans aren’t supposed to make those noises!

…Then again, you can make your body blend in perfectly with its surroundings and see outside the visible light spectrum, so what do you know?!

“…What’s going on?” You feel compelled to interrupt the conversation!
“I’m ge-getting my answers from him first. And you don’t need to hear a word. So shush.

T_T Neko couldn’t wait for your answer about Osgood. “So why did that fat guy have tuna cans with him…? I mean – meow, meow!” It must take a short period before Neko can change to cat speak then…
“I can answer your questions right now, you know? And you started talking with him after me. Isn’t it rude to leave people hanging? What gives?” Something about her attitude is irritating to you. It’s the same as before…

“Y-you don’t need to act like a prick a-about it!” The cat lady snaps back.
“Meow.” Bradford Jr. butts Neko with his head and nods!
Neko recoils from Bradford Jr. “What? No! I don’t need to calm down! Stop taking his side over mine!”
“Well, angry is better than being completely shut down.” You quip.

“So you’re ma-making fun of me again?! That’s wha-what you love to do, huh?!” This girl won’t stop being defensive!
“No, I don’t. Did you forget what you said to me earlier? You’re repeating the same mistakes.”

Once the realization hits, Neko’s mood changes. “It’s hard fo-for me to change, okay?!” Nope, back to frustration. That’s what you get for getting your hopes up…

“Look, I get it. It’s hard. I don’t resent you or anything, but it’s clear what happened at the apartment hasn’t gone away with you. And even then I didn’t want to make fun of you; I was genuinely trying to help you, and that hasn’t changed. We wouldn’t be sitting here in the same room if I didn’t care about your well-being.” Since when did you become her therapist…? “I thought we went over this already.”

“I know, I know… I a-apologize… I’m just not normal. I’m a freak.” T_T Neko’s a brooding mess again.

You take a deep breath, resisting the urge to facepalm. Seeing you do that would just make her feel even worse, and that’s the last thing you need! “Let’s put this behind us for real and change topics, okay?” Neko’s stressed out as much as any other person you know. You don’t feel any better either, but things will get worse if you stop helping now.
“Ugh, I need a cig…” Neko grumbles, but she’s not spending any effort to find one for herself. Must not have any on her. You don’t really remember cleaning cigarette butts in her apartment though, nor any signs of… worse things.

Suddenly, a new familiar voice comes from Bradford Jr.! It’s Nina, who sounds way more depressed! Not again!

“Hello everyone, I hope you’re becoming used to your new positions. Lunch should be delivered to your rooms soon. I know everyone knows what happened by now, and I will take full responsibility for eve—”

Suddenly, another person rudely interrupts your ex-girlfriend! It’s a voice you’d rather not hear again today…

“Insubordination of that kind cannot be accounted by you, or anyone else for that matter. I know you all don’t want to hear it, but there’s no doubt in my mind what happened is only one man’s fault. A miserable excuse of a man who gave up and let himself die. A walking failure. I saw it in him with my own eyes – the same sort of defeatist mindset that caused most of us to gain our flames in the first place! I don’t know what his problems were, but he chose to die that way out of his own free will!” A clatter and squeak come from the speaker, and you’re sure that was from Nina. Richard has the mic all to himself now! His passionate speech continues… “All of you, listen to me! Stop what you’re doing right now and throw that useless burden off your shoulders! Move on from this! It wasn’t your fault, and the fight’s not over yet. This place is only running as smooth as our resources let it, and we need to help to keep that going. I need you all on the same page while I’m gone, understand?!”

After sounds of a struggle, Nina’s voice comes back on. “D-don’t interrupt me! Darn, I lost my train of thought. Continuing, the sentiment of Richard’s words are what’s important here. We need to move forward, and if you need to blame someone for what happened, blame me if you must. We need to keep working together at least until this hellish day ends. Thank you. Over and out.”

Knowing the others are going through the same thing you are… it doesn’t hit any less harder. The gutted tone in Nina’s voice is telling, but at least they’re trying to keep things together on their end.

Unexpectedly, another message comes in! Nina’s at it again!

“Oh, I forgot to update! Richard is leaving the building to help the other Judges if they need it. He will check on the Grand Hospital first. He requested backup from us, but he rejected everyone we offered. When he finds them, he’ll bring all the Judges right to the clinic!” What kind of plan is that? The deal with the Judges is them being really sick or in critical condition. How is he going to safely carry the Judges all by himself, without any cars or transportation that work in the Crimzone?! “To monitor any nearby activity and to help him when he returns closer, we’re establishing Control Room C on the roof. Amelia and Yu Yan are the ones in charge there. Nariko will be there until she’s emotionally clear to return to Clinic Patrol. When that happens we’ll have more changes in effect. So just to make it clear, we have:

>Control Room A is Matilda overseeing the bunker cameras.
>Control Room B is yours truly keeping an eye on the cat cameras.
>Control Room C is Yu Yan, Nariko and Amelia watching the happenings outside. Cat included.
>Clinic Patrol is Lise.
>Bunker Patrol is Henry.

Even if no immediate danger draws near, we still need to give our 110% please. I believe in you. Over and out.” Yep, not even half the energy she displayed before in these announcements. As a side note, Nariko and rooftops aren’t a good combination.

“S-she’s very go-good… speaking, like, cl-clearly.” T_T Neko stumbles over her words of praise.
“She’s a great teacher after all.” You nod proudly. She’s also great at other things too, but Neko doesn’t need to know that!
“Huh… T-that explains why she was so easy to t-talk to.” Neko agrees for some reason. Teachers aren’t easy to talk to, what she’s on about?

Before another conversation could spark between you two, someone knocks at the door! It’s Nurse Kata delivering lunch! Unlike the rest of the group, Kata didn’t seem that much affected by Osgood’s death. Maybe it’s a testament to her inner strength and experience, or she didn’t care all that much about him. Either way, her words of encouragement gave you a little more strength.

But this homemade lunch by Kata carries more strength than mere words! She seemed quite proud of it when she gave it to you. It’s dry and not seasoned correctly. You could have done the recipes better, but you needed this badly after the stress of the past several hours.

And it would have been a good meal experience if Neko wasn’t devouring the whole thing at a breathless speed! She’s eating with her hands and facefirst! The sauce is all over her now! If it were edible, you have no doubt Neko would be tearing at the container too!

You keep watching her with open awe and disgust, until she gets the hints and stops eating for one second.

“D-don’t look at me like that…” This disgusting cat girl wipes her hands on her sweater, then covers her face in shame. Even Bradford Jr. looks on horrified, and he’s a cat!
“…Why? Just why? You have a fork in there you know.”
“D-don’t judge me…!” Neko weeps and resumes her feast. Her tears are mixing with her meal now…

After that unspeakable display ended with the meal, you gave her as many napkins as she needed to clean herself. Eventually, this cleaning session comes to an abrupt end when Lise comes back to this room. The delinquent accountant explains you and her are changing roles, and you’ll pair up with Nariko soon. The orders came from Uccelli herself, and she has no way of knowing what transpired yesterday between you and your hobo.

This is a recipe for disaster beyond Richard witnessing Neko eat, but it’s also a chance to fix things…

You pass through the bunker’s halls with Boopies on your shoulder again. Henry’s nowhere in the open, probably enjoying his lunch in one of the rooms. The bad feeling you’ve had isn’t as intense now, but it hangs in the back of your head, an uneasy caution.

The clinic reception is empty again – except your OG hobo is waiting in the same chair you were in. Her eyes are a little red, her hair is disheveled, and she’s all alone just like you.

What do you say to her? She hasn’t noticed you yet.

>“How are you holding up?”

Before you could make a decision on how to go about this, Nariko finally notices you! Her gloomy face turns to full joy as she stands up and jogs towards you. What is she, some kind of puppy? Your OG hobo stops dead on her tracks in front of you, doing her best to maintain composure. It doesn’t quite work…

“I’m so glad to see you’re okay.” Before you could accompany it with a smile, Nariko traps you in her arms!

“I apologize for being so bold, but I needed to steal a hug from you.” Nariko is trembling a little and not planning to let you go. Her face buried in your chest, you can feel some tears rolling down. You hug her back, trying not to lose yourself in how soft she is… Then you start patting her head to help her calm down. Grabbing her away from you a little, you see her relieved face red and teary all over, like some tomato in a grocery store.

To turn the situation on its head, you think it would be fun to mess with her. “Miss me?” Channeling your level 4 Handsomeness, you wink right at her!

In a flash, Nariko’s face glows so red her image would be under the definition in an encyclopedia! Unable to look at you, she covers her eyes with her right arm. Her breathing becomes erratic, her legs start to wobble, and her expression is somewhere between ecstasy and distress…

You instinctively grab her shoulders because you’re afraid she might fall and knock herself out. Because that’s a thing that can happen, right?

“P-please! You are well aware of my feelings and the depths they spring from! Do not tease me again, my dear Johnny… My fragile heart cannot hope to endure such emotion!” Aside from the ‘please’, her other words come out in a barely audible whimper. If Nariko weren’t busy trying to stay breathing, you swear she’d actually moan out loud.

‘Adorable’ isn’t quite the word for it anymore, is it?

Game plan was executed perfectly, but you don’t know what to do here! What now? How are you going to deal with this? You can’t just leave Nariko this way! Should have thought ahead with this beforehand… Come on, think… Maybe acting casual can help her relax? Yeah, that’s it…

“So how are you holding up?”

Nariko takes a few seconds to respond. “I’m doing better now… How about you?” Her face is not as red as before, and she’s facing away from you. You might be catching a little of that red yourself…
“Not far from how you’re feeling, I guess.” Better to be honest, ignoring the part of being easily embarrassed. “…Let’s get going. I think fresh air will do us a lot of good.” You two start walking around the empty halls in your patrol. The awkward silence weighs heavy…

Now that you think about it, it’s really funny how each time you look away from her, you can see and feel her staring at you the whole time. When you turn your head back, she looks away and you do the same. Why is it so fun to tease her like that? Even Philonune finds it amusing, though he’s keeping quiet like he always does.

Without warning, Boopies’ speaker activates! It’s Nina! Your gorgeous teacher quickly explains there is important news, and frees the airwaves to Yu Yan!

“Uh, guys?! We’re in big trouble! One of the crystal pieces is coming our way — and there’s a fuckhuge monster chasing after it!

Oh shit!
