This feeling. A feeling boils within you, bubbling hate seems to make your vision flush red. This thing!? Was this what attacked the two of you? Was this what took the most important person in your life? Death! Murder! You would rend flesh from bone, break and scatter it to the four winds! Vengeance, justice, merciless bloodthrist quenched in flames. Your chest tightens, breathing becomes haggard and difficult. You will?! will? Will...

(Relax muh boy. You're losing yourself again. Breathe, just... breathe. Take your time, I'll help. One. Two. Three~)

"Huh, huh... hoo~ Huh, huh... hoo~" Closing your eyes, you see the scene from your past. You see him smiling warmly down at you. Moisture starts to well up a second time
today. So soon after making your conviction known you slip again. Is this all your word is good for? Are you truly just deluding yourself? You promptly drop yourself down, assuming a meditative stance, and focus yourself. This is how it must be. You will stay true to your words. That comes first. Your obligations to people and state, those you swore to protect, come first. You will avenge your mentor, but that will be secondary to your duty. Leash the beast within. You are the king of your castle. And you decree, "Innocent people depend on this operation. I am healthy and able. I must try."

Removing your glove you place your thumb onto to box reading [YES]. A sudden prick lets you know to remove said digit, revealing the scorched imprint etched into the scroll. Signed in, the ink seems to fade away. You roll up the work order and slip it away into your satchel. Will anybody else tag in? Regardless it would be prudent to begin your search, but in what direction? The Eastern front covers roughly 20 miles total ending at "the Edge of Midworld". If this truly was the beast that assaulted you and your mentor then perhaps it would be best to head back towards the location you first encountered it. Standing, you quickly begin a jog back towards the path you'd entered from. Best to conserve energy for whats about to come.

Contd.

[Hail, Scarecrow.]

Jumping slightly you turn to see a figure leaning against a smaller oak. He stood a good head shorter then you, clothed in fine quality but well worn weathers. You feel the eyes behind the expressionless mask looking to you expectantly. Standing, he drapes a coffin up over his shoulder. A "weapon" you'd recognize far sooner then your masked comrade.

"Archibald. What bring the 3rd son of the Armstrong family out here, so far from the front?"

The only response you receive is a rolled up scroll waved in his off hand. Typical. The fact he called out to you at all surprises you more then his appearance. Never one for small talk, made all the worse for that mask. It seems to make his voice echo all around you.

"Accepted as well? As did I. You have a potential lead?"

A shake of the head.

"Same. I will be heading to a spot I believe I encountered the beast."

[I see.]

"Anyone else join?"

A shrug.

"Uh. would you... care to join me then?"

A nod.

"Ok? Then follow me."

[Yes.]

Oh no, this should prove an interesting night. Together, the two of you break into a mild jog. In silence.

Making good time the two of you sonn reach the small clearing that now rests your mentor. Slowing, you try to get your bearings and remember which way to go. You can see Archibald's attention drawn to the mound of dirt, as attentive as ever unfortunately. You don't look at him. Are you worried, or hopeful, for someone to bring it up? He's sharp and has probably already put two and two together. Better to try something. Anything to take your mind off this train of thought. Oh!

"Archibald? How much do you know about casters?" Nothing. Oh, ok. But, he is looking at you. So you have his attention. Reaching into your belt you pull out the two unspent shells and hold them out, "I had three, no idea what they are. Used one already and got lucky, but it doesn't match either of these. Any idea?"

With a tilt of his masked head he reaches out to take the shells from your hand. Setting down his weapon so it leans against him he rolls one in each hand and intently looks them over. After a good minute of quiet he hands one back to you

[Alphas]

So both of them are alphas then, the last one probably was as well. He points to an engraving on the side, it appears to be a smaller Imporeon letter A. Assuming this you figure the next two levels, beta and omega, use the respective letter. Helpful. Rolling the shell around you recognize it as the one your mentor gifted to you prior to the operation. You wonder if you can figure out what they do.

[Imporeon.] Huh? Looking up, you see him pointing at the one in your hand then to the one he holds, [Standard. Old. I believe it is "confusion". Useful.]

Useful indeed! A spell like that could well turn the tide of a battle in your favor. To think he had two aces up his sleeve at all times. Clever old bastard.

[Enough? Mission.]

"Oh. Yes, of course. Shall we?"

With a nod, he hands you the other shell and turns. Best to start looking.

"I've got something! Over here!" Waving, you gesture to some large footprints filled with rain water. "It seems to have headed due West."

[Indeed.] Crouching down and scanning around he quickly points out a patch of hair near a broken, and scorched, tree. [Our quarry. Big. Come.]

With that he takes off into a sprint. The two of you cover a lot of ground in short order. Every time you seem to think the trail will go cold, Archibald quickly seems to pick up something fresh. You decide to fall in behind him and follow closely. Although, you have never worked with your quiet comrade. Perhaps it would be good to coordinate? Easier said then done.

"Hey, we need a game plan. Neither of us are greenhorns, but if we don't communicate this can go South quick."

[...]

"Archibald?"

[I see]

"First. What is your weapon? I don't think a coffin will do much," To this his only answer is to swing around his coffin into both his arms. Which promptly clacked open and transformed into a large crossbow. A arbalest? A small compartment popped out two quivers to which he placed one on his back, the other his waist.

[Waltz Macabre] He effortlessly notches a bolt. [And you?]

As the two of you run you take a few minutes to explain your weapon and what little equipment you two are carrying. He is strictly a ranged fighter, so he recommends you take the forefront. Thou you can hit ferociously, it may be better to rely on the shield. Aggrex-Tok are not something to underestimate. You two agree agression will be key to victory however. While you may kill the beast, enough force should scare it off. Archibald also possesses the means to incapacitate and capture the beast. Thou potentially more difficult, the rewards may be greater and the beast can be held then released after the operation concludes.

What those do? If we want to capture creature, I have feeling those two are the key.

Stu bolt- Anyone struck by a bolt must pass a Strong test modified by the damage dealt or fall to the ground
ex: 2 damage from the bolt= 1d20+2

Drone brew- anyone struck must pass a Strong test or fall asleep one hour unless dealt damage. Passed test causes drowsiness, meaning only one action may be taken per turn and cannot use activated abilities for an hour.

"If we see an opportunity, I suppose we can try to capture it. Unfortunately, I don't see it being that easy. I honestly think it has caused enough trouble for us to put it down. If they wanted it captive they would have put it into the hunt details."

[Hmm.]

Slowing his pace and coming up along side you Archibald reached out and handed you a vial of strange liquid. It appears to be to be a protective oil. You reach out, and push it back towards him with a shake of your head.

"Thank you. But, I know how pricey those can be. Better you hold onto it in case you need it more then me. In a pinch."

No response. He simply picks up the pace again, pulling ahead of you again. After a few more minutes of running the two of you burst out into a fairly sparse pack of woods. Their is actually a good bit of grass that has managed to take up residence thanks to the abundant holes in the canopy. Archibald suddenly crouches and gestures for you to as well. Doing so, you strain your senses trying to pick up what spooked him. Have you found your target? But where could it be?

"Heh heh. Come on, stop messing with it."

"Can't help it. Look at how tough it's trying to act. It would be cute if it wasn't so pathetic. We're gonna get 5000 for this little guy?"

Voices? Looking around you spy what appears to be a pair of young men a small distance from your position. One seems crouched over with a stick or such, prodding at something out of view. Tapping your teammates shoulder you beckon for him to follow as you creep closer. The two of you move slowly and silent as night. What could these two be doing? Civilians should be on lock down in the villages of the area. Are they hunters like you? If so, they'd better have a damn good reason to not be doing their duties. From the look of their clothing you would hazard a guess they spend most of their time in a city. Probably a pair of newer scarecrows sharpening their fangs on this operation.

From behind a downed oak you peer over and see what has their rapt attention. To your horror, it would appear to be an injured animal of some kind. Roughly the size of a wolf it had a strikingly contrasted coat of black over creamy beige. Baring fangs and growling deeply you see something on the back of its neck stand on end, and then it spits out a burst of flame! Could this be a welp? It seems to be cornered and you notice it seems to have lost its front paw on the right side. Did a larvae get it? Why are these two harassing an injured animal? You go to rise and berate this cruel duo when you freeze. You see a faint glow coming into view, and it glows brighter and larger as you start to hear a deep threatening growl. Your hair stands on end as you look to see Archibald had slunk off somewhere. Turning back you see neither have taken notice. Oh no!

"Get away from there you idiots! Run!"

"BAOOOOOOOOOH"

Seeming to jump clear out of their skin the two hunters turn and start running. But it's to late. Bursting forth the creature belches out a great gout of flame which douses the pair, turning them into a screaming mess of thrashing limbs that fall to the ground and are promptly trampled into silence. The mighty beast looks up from it's work looking right into your eyes. The anger, feral and malicious, bores into you. It rears up showing large claws at the end of shaggy limbs. Snarling maw filled with sharp fangs raises as it unleashes a truly deafening roar that you can feel in your very bones.

"BaoooOOOOOOOOOOOOH"

"I should have took that oil."

Aggrex-Tok. The Herdsman of Cinder.
