_________________________________________________________
In the last session we finished with the housing shortage and wrapped up preparations for the New Year celebration. The village now also has its own brand-new inn and a separate cookhouse. Sky lanterns are prepared, gifts are wrapped and we have already started partying through the night. Sigrid couldn’t handle that much booze and blacked out. After hauling her back to her room you were intercepted by Nike’ in disguise. She has some things to tell you…
>>
>>3245981
Nike’ takes a seat in the dining room of your house as you quickly put a kettle on the stove and get some tea ready. She told you that situation is not critical, but it concerns Verdandi’s precognition in your area so you fear that you’ve been discovered. However, in that case you would expect several members of the pantheon to tag along. New deities are pretty rare and thus you are very valuable.

Nika takes a sip from the cup and says: “Well, first of all, you can breathe out. Don’t worry, you weren’t found out yet. Currently only I know about your nature and no one else in the Pantheon knows of your existence. However, I believe that the two things I wanted to talk about would be highly important for you and your future.

Well, first of all, the precognition problem. Vera has the most powerful precognition known among both pantheons and independent Outsiders. However, precognition has its limits. I don’t really understand how it works, but she explained it somewhat like this: the universe acts as if it is predetermined. All events, thoughts and actions are determined by things that came before them and if a universe was created same way a million times the same events would happen a million times with perfect precision. However, on really small scales truly random events happen that don’t rely on events that passed before. She calls it “God playing dice” and these things almost never bubble up on macroscale. However, it seems that these truly random events play some role in all forms of consciousness.

Precognition can essentially read that predetermined future. If you look far enough away the truly random events make the vision less determined and decisions made by self-aware creatures also add the fuzziness to the image. These random events are not a 50/50 coin flip things either and Vera claims that she can see exactly how probable the random events are giving her a unique ability to know what anyone can do in the future. Vera claims that she sees a branching tree of timelines tied up to the decisions made by masses, great and influential people but most commonly us, synthetic gods. She calls them “golden threads of fate” and tries to steer them in the direction that would benefit everyone.
>>
>>3245990
The problem is, these “decision knots” in the “thread of fate” are well visible. That allows her to predict the appearance of new synthetic gods. As they are destined to wake up and start influencing the world, she can see more fuzziness in precognition in the area and we usually send someone to retrieve the pod before it is even done cooking.

However, why didn’t we do it here? Why did you wake up in the middle of the forest and not in a large marble hall in Elspen? Vera has recently told me that a low probability event has caused her to update the timeline. The place called Farsalos, while starting as monster menaced village, managed to flourish and become a strong point of expansion for Cenophila into the neutral territory. In other words, there is the chance that for some reason she literally can’t see you. She sees the effects of your actions but she can’t predict possible decisions that you can make.

I have no real evidence except of that so think what you want about it. I felt like you should know. You see, Vera is the only person who can see these timeline threads. No one else can predict as far and as accurately as her. She is the chokepoint of predictive information and we literally plan our entire progress strategy around her. I think you can agree that it is not the smartest thing to do even if we drop the trust issues…”

>” I agree, this seems dangerous to trust only one person with that much power”
>” While I agree with the risks, her predictions can still be useful for planning, they just shouldn’t be the only source of information”
>” While I understand the concerns, there might be things we don’t know about her ability. I can’t judge the situation just yet”
>” You mentioned a second subject you wanted to talk about”
> Write-in?
>>
>>3245992

Nika listens to your opinion and replies: “Yes, if we or even just anyone else had the same power as her it would be less of a problem. There is no real way to tell if she is right, wrong or if she has her own agenda.

Regarding the second subject, you’ve probably noticed the peculiar location of your village. It is between three nations that are not on friendly terms with each other. As Vera’s prediction states, your actions essentially boosted the village into a path of becoming a town and later a polis which would cause villages to start appearing around it eventually. That would cause our border to bulge into that territory and there might be people who want to object.

The area is not being easily colonized because of high concentrations of monsters. Stone age people are not targeted as hard as civilized people because many of the creatures are designed to destroy people’s creations as well as humans. They would prioritize a village in the outskirts of a nation to a wooden shack with stone age inhabitants. However, as humans can potentially take on most individual monsters in the area, your village essentially creates a foothold for civilian expansion into the area in the future.

The politics massively slow down the expansion of our territories because by international treaty we can’t personally clear out monsters below a certain threat factor. For example, we would come to deal with that mad goddess invasion or if the Fallen landed somewhere here but we won’t be hunting giant wolves to extinction just because they actively attack unprotected villages.

While our pantheon is comparable to Valistrat pantheon and to the combined Ethean- Holy Nation pantheons, neither of us can afford an actual fight. Conflict on that scale would cost hundreds of thousands if not millions of lives both of civilians and soldiers. Due to treaties all three sides are prevented from personally (or through Cups) interfering in conflicts and facilitating expansion. We can give subsidies, heal wounded, remove existential threats but we can’t go and slaughter entire enemy armies.

This entire situation gives you more leverage and causes more problems than you realize. Due to your position no one can afford to force you to join up. You are too close to all sides so if one does something other two would not be pleased. This doesn’t include “actions of mortals” so sides can try to use them as proxies to affect your decisions.

Thus, if you are revealed, our pantheon would not be able to afford to both take you in and keep you in the area. If you decided to join us you would most probably have to move to our place. If you decided to stay here you would have almost complete autonomy but we won’t be able to help too much directly and I expect that Elspeth would most probably attempt to maintain friendly connections with you.

I highly recommend taking this into account as you progress. Valistrat is quite capable of marching through the thinner region of wilderness and striking here and same goes for Holy Nation after the recent events.

Oh, one last thing…” she says and places a small black box with Cenophilan crest on the table. “Happy New Year” she replies and smiles. Inside of the box is a ring carved out of monolithic piece of glowing agate…

man, all this situation seems fucked, I would not apose joining the Cenophilian pantheon, if only for the strenght in numbers since the other two pantheons seem like shit, we would have to think very hard about all this, if we do move from here we should leave someone in charge, a cup-bearer that we can raise to take care of Farsalos and keep us posted
>>
>>3246163
It is not a necessity, you could stay in friendly relations with an ability to call for help and if you manage to convince enough people you might be able to both stay and join the pantheon. It is just the options based on current situation.

the cenophilans seem the best choice at the moment, but the problem is we have only seen their own 'propaganda' for lack of a better word

Nike seems nice, be again she is the only one we have met, not that the other countries seem reasonable

the best thing would be keeping our head down for now and keep securing Farsalos, at least until they are safer from those monsters
after that we can start something close to planning
>>
>>3246167
I don't see what is so bad with the other two countries in your eyes. Let me give you a bit of a better overview of what we know.

Valistrat is an empire but it is structured like ancient Roman empire and it has a senate and democratically appointed rulers and so on. Their military is great and disciplined. They are politically aggressive and expansionist but they currently mostly focus on cutting into monster infested territories to the north of their lands and they honor agreements. Yes, their pantheon structure reminds you of high school and yes, their head deity is known for going full Zeus and banging everything that moves but no one said they are all assholes. Like Cenophilans they practice religious freedoms, anyone can worship whoever they want as long as they acknowledge the existence of the local pantheon. They pave more roads and they trade a lot when not in conflict. Yes, they fought Cenophila literally less than a year ago but that’s what primitive nation states do in pre- industrial era.

Holy Nation is a theocratic government, but it is also one of the most advanced. They went ahead with giving out technologies before the technological limitation treaties were signed and they are the only mid-late medieval nation in the area. Their soldiers commonly wear mild steel fully enclosed plate, they use trebuchets and their ships are enormous and almost invulnerable by international standards. They use such an advanced hull design that they could probably resist some early gunpowder cannons. Their country is a kingdom and ruled by a royal family but the government allows pretty lax regulations for local leadership that can be anything from noble houses to democratic assemblies. They have only two deities so you would literally have a third of the power in the pantheon if you join them. That’s a lot of power to change things. Holies spam the most Cup Bearers out of four nations and if you want your own army of followers, they will most probably teach you. They are also allied with Etheans who are a trading country with five deities you don’t know much about. Even though they don’t allow religious freedoms, by law the perpetrator can demand to be sent to either Ethea(who does have the freedoms) or to a country whose gods they worship.
>>
>>3246206
The whole stratification of Valistrat rubs me the wrong way, and the holys don't seem like fun guys to be around. Ceno just felt more agreeable for me, but anyway, its not something we should get into now I think.

I still want to meet that sniw elf goddess too.
>>
>>3246166
Huh, a ring… she is most probably not proposing. You haven’t been dating and it is obviously not a wedding ring but it feels like a fun opportunity. “A ring?! But we weren’t even dating!” You say faking the emotion. For a moment Nika’s eyes go wide and she coughs in her hand trying to hide the fact that she blushes. Wait, was she actually proposing? This thought causes you to blush as well but Nike’ replies before it gets too awkward.

“N…no this is one of the rings some of my cup bearers use during early training.” She puts on the ring for demonstration. As she waves her hand it leaves a stroke of after images as if you were really tired during the night but way more severe. It is possible but hard to focus on exact location of her hand. “I don’t know if you can learn this trick, but I thought you’d appreciate an example of psi anchored a material. Just like glowing quartz that sucked up energy manipulation psi, you can put spacetime into marble, agate and a lot of other materials. Some work better than others but you can use basically anything. The ring itself works for about a minute for the whole body but it slowly recharges in a couple hours. Focus on it to switch it on or off.” She puts the ring back in the box and passes it back to you.

You suddenly feel really uncomfortable. It is a new year and you forgot to make a present for her. You’ve got to have something you can make for her, right? There is a huge chunk of ruby in your basement as well as a lot of various gems. You also have a few quartz crystals from that lamia adventure. “I’m sorry, but I don’t have a present prepared for you. I didn’t expect your visit. Could you please wait until I make you something?”

Nike smiles and tells you that you don’t have to worry. If you insist, she can wait until after the party. By the way, would you mind if she joins you? She’s been cooped up for a couple weeks doing some deity work and she wants to unwind a little.

>Sure, help yourself

Hairpin is essentially a masking tool. It makes her look like another person. You are not sure what are its limitations yet, but the particular one makes her look a bit shorter and thinner than she is in reality and it changes her skin color, hairstyle, facial features and clothes.

“Sure, just don’t forget the pin” you tell her and smile back. She turns on her psychic mask and thanks you for the reminder and the two of you move back to the village square to continue celebrating. Sig managed to get back to her senses incredibly quickly and was out of her room by midnight when the entire village launched hundreds of sky lanterns simultaneously. It is said that if you make a wish and launch one of those the wish could come true. What should you wish for? You are an immortal superhuman, you are rich and you now have a lot of friends. Then again, there is Farsalos and you feel like turbulent times would come to this place someday. Thus, you wish for your friends, your people and your village to be safe and happy. This is probably a good wish.

Rheia was really glad to get her own lab. You’ve installed it into one of the empty rooms in your house and added a couple minor things like ventilation and fire safety. You know, just in case. She has always displayed few emotions but now she was smiling widely and there is something amazing in a child’s smile that warms your heart.

Pelagia and her father couldn’t believe what you presented to them. Dwarven tools are one of the best in quality and they promise to make the best use of them. However, they both would need skills to utilize them at full capacity. None of them knows how to correctly forge armor or complicated weapons yet.

Signy received a new sword taken from the dwarven ruins and you repaired her armor and clothes. She was very shy and she wasn’t sure if she could accept it but she eventually thanked you profusely and promised to think of something to get for you in return.
>>
>>3246409
Haven politely accepted the presents and gave you one in return. It is a beautifully crafted leather belt that she purchased specifically for you. It is decorated with wavy writings in the high form of language used by elven royals and nobles. The buckle looks ornate but tough and it is apparently made out of some kind of steel produced in Teryia. Due to long lifespans elven blacksmiths mastered a highly laborious art of steelmaking that doesn’t require a furnace capable of actually melting the metal. Their single edged and beautifully curved longswords are unparalleled in durability and sharpness but they are incredibly rare and cost a fortune to acquire. Smaller elven steel items are a bit more affordable but they are still supremely durable. The leather was also somehow treated to improve its durability and resistance against elements and corrosive substances (like what some monsters use as a weapon).

Now, the moment you’ve been waiting for, Sig’s presents. You essentially remade her entire set of gear and she looks amazing in it. Looks like your measurements were correct and it fits her perfectly. She really likes the polearm design as well. You didn’t expect her to be able to swing it that easily though. She probably has some of that super strength like her sister. Also note for the future, bear hugs with super strength and in armor are not the best idea. It is a bit amusing how Sigrid can feel such childish joy from just this present. You don’t remember when you last experienced something like that…

In any case, it is about four AM and most villagers moved back to their homes. You were just about to wrap up as well but something amazing happened. This area is a bit too far to the equator for this to happen but a small snowflake landed on your arm. It immediately melted and snow stopped pretty quickly but it is the first snow you’ve seen since you woke up. You feel strangely happy…

>Well, new year is over, let’s take a look in our to-do list
>You feel kind of bad for Nika, let’s make that present for her. Dwarves should have some gem cutting tools, right?
>Nika decided to check out your bathhouse. You could try to join her

Aaaarg, so many choices! Try to surprise her, tell her we loved the present and we weren't sure what to give her since she wears lighter armor than the dwarven metal and we would not find anything better than her crossbow, I hope she liked our present too. Lets see whats on her mind.

You decided to check up on Haven and found her on top of one of the towers that watches over the northern border of Farsalos. She was sitting in an embrasure and looking into the distance. She also held the amulet in her hands and it glowed brighter than it should. You wonder what was she thinking about…

“Oh, hello Agaha, how may I help you?” She asks as you as you get up on the roof of the tower. You tell her that you loved her present. You weren’t sure what to give to her since she doesn’t wear heavy armor and she already has a crossbow. You hope that she liked your present too. You also tell her that you were worried about her and you want to hear what’s been on her mind.

“I really enjoyed your presents. I just…” she stumbles and continues “well, as you can probably see we don’t have many people on watch. I wanted to get some fresh air and I decided to fill in for today. There is a lot on my plate right now, sorry.”

You take a seat on top of one of the closest battlement to her and prepared to listen.

“I haven’t been at home for a while and a lot of things changed. I’ve got a few new siblings and nephews, lost a few aunts and uncles from the military to a recent sea monster attack, paid off basically the entirety of the family debt. My younger sister has just gotten married so I had to worry about her and I attend the marriage ceremony, the usual noble stuff…

I’ve been mostly thinking about whether or not I should accept your proposal. From one hand I would see no problems with that. You are reliable and kind, the monsters in the area are plentiful, I can help people and there is always an opportunity for adventure. However, you are also… well… a deity. You might not want to be called one but that doesn’t change things that matter.

I am not sure if Rozen, the patron deity of my house would allow me to enter service of another deity. I know she has left a long time ago, but in the stories, she was always… jealous of other gods who had larger following so she rewarded loyalty of her subjects and harshly punished those who left. I don’t want to incur her wrath on me and my friends and family.”

>Don’t consider me as your new deity, just view me as a friend and don’t worry, friends help each other out
>Don’t worry, if Rozen has a problem she’ll have to send the complaints directly to you
>Rozen left during a conflict and if she hasn’t been heard of for literally over a hundred years, she probably doesn’t even know who you are if she is still alive. The chance of her coming back is essentially null

Haven sighs and looks at your amulet for a moment. Its light flickers as she thinks until it finally becomes bright again and she replies “Yeah, you are probably right. Even if you are practically a goddess you don’t demand me to follow your teachings. I can probably continue to worship Rozen and I hope she would understand if she ever comes back. I guess I will join you for now. Please take care of me.” She says and nods. Welcome to the team, Haven.

She will be staying in one of the extra houses you’ve built. The population crisis taught you that having more housing is better than having less. You’ll throw in an armory and a vault when you have the time so that she could store the remains of her dwarven horde and maybe the new spoils the two of you are going to acquire. However, for now she decides to retire for the night. She is not a tireless superhuman like you and once the problem that kept her awake went away she decided to get some sleep.

You, on the other hand, decide to make something for Nike’. You feel bad for leaving her without a present after she went all the way here to get you one so you decided to look into what you could offer her. Plus, it is not like there is much else you could do since all of your friends are asleep and jumping into a sauna after that awkward ring moment might not look well.

You pull out your glowing quartz and a bag of random cut gems you’ve collected as well as gold and jeweler’s tools and started brainstorming what you could do. The inspiration came to you from the dwarven artifact. By placing a light source below the gem, you can make it project multicolored lights and shapes on the walls and ceiling. However, what should you depict? You don’t have precise enough tools so you choose something that won’t require too many small details: a star map.

You take a large round cut sapphire and polish it until it is almost perfect. Then you drill tiny dents corresponding to the positions of stars and in the end you add a golden base that would hold the device in place. You placed the ball in such a way that it can freely rotate making it a tiny observatory. You are very proud of your work and you hope Nike’ will appreciate the effort you’ve put into it because when you went out of your “cave” it was already late morning.

Just a few points I wanted to highlight before I go: Nike's real name is Nika, I am not just making the same typo over and over again. Also elven capital is Teryia and I keep calling it Teriya by mistake. I just noticed that and it is bugging me so I fixed that in the pastebins.

I'm sorry but the start of today's quest will be delayed. I massively overslept after an all- nighter and I need some time to get my shit together. I will post a message when I start preparations
