Feral Dark Elves. Not a new one, perse, but admittedly uncommon.

Before you can muse on that much more, though, a buzzing comes through your head- that’d be Izumi calling. “Yeah?” you quickly answer to a confused capitan as you take out your Murmur Stone. “Sitrep?”

“Got a bit of an issue,” is the immediate response. “I’m seeing rapid insertion forces in multiple areas coming in hot! They’ve done away with the finesse!”

Great. “Like they ever had it. We’ve dealt with one, managed to break into the Judicator’s Hall. Few fatalities, few casualties. Locations?”

“Two to the north near your position; flanked by mounted infantry and armored. Eyes on two more incoming parties near the south end; big massive wooden wagons with external riders!” Great. You’ve got to pick and choose, now. Although you didn’t think they had this kind of logistics system, you don’t have time to question how. The royals are out of the city, but you still have to punt these idiots out...

It takes a moment for you to see what she’s talking about when you leap up- but sure enough, to the north, big rolling open air wagons, battering ram on the front, and carted by...damnit, you can’t remember what type of horses those are, but they’re big, red eyed and carnivorous, you remember that much. Your own horses might’ve gotten eaten if you hadn’t kept them back...and speaking of horses…

To the south end, it’s rough to see, but the fact that you CAN at all is worrisome; a pair of big, wooden constructs that seems to have dots- the riders, presumably. Practically tanks in this age, you think…and as big as they are, the possibility of some kind of ordinance inside them makes you worry a bit.

>Action!
>>
>>3252165
Same as before.

Go north, bait the dragoons into a charge into a horizontal barrier, toss some magi-waves to cover the advance of allied forces, then bounce to the south to handle whatever are in those constructs.
>>

Wood burns. Elves burn. I'm willing to bet that the ordinance they'll be using will burn.

So.

You want to stick supposed explosives.

With a burning stick.

When we could just manablast them from a distance?

Personally I assumed there were like. Monstrous siege shadow beasts or something in there.
>>

I never said to get close and personal with potential explosives. After all, we have the sticky bombs and everything else that can set off a bomb.

As you land, you see the captain looking at you with slightly less hostility now. “Where are the invaders?” he asks quickly.

“To the north and south,” you respond, already making up your mind. “And I’m going to handle the ones in the south. You and your men take the forces to the north. You’ll link up with the humans to do that.”

“...Fine. I will agree to that.” Without wasting any more breath, he turns to his remaining forces to explain the situation- you’re already two leaps gone by the time he starts talking.

Quickly contacting Izumi again, you relay your plan. “I’m going to intercept the southern breach attempt. You and a chunk of the army need to get to the north; you’ll be linking up with the
lizards. Pretty sure it’s the captain of the royal guard and his men.”

“Understood. I’ll be on the lookout. Be careful. Out.” Well, that’s that then. Now, for your own issues…

As you rapidly approach the town limits, gliding on the air, you can see the constructs at a much greater size- and honestly, you’re impressed. This thing is taller than a house and just as wide. Definitely got SOMETHING inside it.

And outside, you can tell as you can now clearly see that these elves are archers as well- and they’re aiming straight for you…

As you pull out the Flamebringer from your pouch, you can already hear yelling on the verge of panic...

>Drop to the ground- you know they’ll try to saturate, and it'll be tough to defend, but better than than risking getting shot out of the sky.

No reason to limit yourself, you suppose- before you hit city limits, you manage to maneuver over a small burning hut- perfectly placed for an updraft, thankyouverymuch. The initial salvo of arrows comes flying, but by then you’re already too high up for them to hit you, even during your own arc. A number of magiblasts fly from your hand, splintering the nearest construct’s side, enough to immediately cause most of the outside riders to leap from their mounts- you’d kind of hoped that more of them would’ve been caught in the explosion, or at least fell to their deaths, but it seems that most of them land relatively safely. Damnit. What’s worse is the inside of the creature, which seems to be full of...shadow creatures. Of course. These, however, are strange, nearly blob-like creatures- shadow slimes, right. Why those when they’ve been using more solid constructs, though?

Your thoughts are paused as the second construct QUICKLY reminds you it’s still active, and you’re still not good enough to fly, only glide...which means you’re rapidly getting back down into hittable range; the fact that you’re beyond any real cover area makes this a touch worrisome- you’ll have to use mana for a barrier at this rate…

*BANG*

With a sudden crash and a plume of dust, the entire nearby area gets rocked as SOMETHING seems to impact near the second carrier- not quite hitting it, but enough to shower it in dirt and debris and causing it to veer off course- enough to get its attention, and yours.

When you trace the line of fire back to its source- just out of the treelines to the southeast, near where you handled the ritualists, and actually solid enough ground, what you see is...well, honestly, you’re not sure what to make of it.

A gilded in silver, oversized artillery canon; if the elves had just used the body of a tank, THIS was the gun. Boxed in just barely, and manned by...rabbits. Rabbitkin. Most of them in armor and toting what you’re pretty sure are some kind of crossbows, the whole thing being driven by what seems to be THRONGS of Rabbitkin physical power. One of them is actually ON the damn cannon, with something in his hand; although you’re not sure what, it’s pointing it forward.

There’s a momentary, pregnant silence aside from the rumbling of the construct’s movement...that’s quickly aborted when the cannon absolutely erupts again with a roaring bang, another cannonball tearing into the earth near the construct and nearly toppling it this time, it shakes so much, forcing it to stop lest physics do it for them.

>Well, shit. They just gave you one heck of an opening. Would be rude to not take it and wipe out the other construct.
>They can handle this much, if they can get their aim right. You need to get the escapees and make sure they don’t disperse into the city!

Well, that kind of opening...you’re not going to just throw it away. You quickly let loose a number of further magiblasts- with them already off track from the cannonfire, they can’t even react in time, the shots neatly destroying the convoy in a shower of wooden pieces. The individuals that fall out are far less orderly this time, and you’re able to shoot a number of them down- focusing on the massive beasts that are sprawled around the ground first. Don’t want those getting into the city at all.

By this time, though, you’re too close to the ground to really get any advantage out of your gliding; you let yourself fall the rest of the way as you hear a cheer go up in the distance...which turns into a (somewhat squeaky) roar of combat as the mass of infantry rabbitkin begin to charge across the field to battle.

Soon, your stone goes off again. “Hylinde here. Status report is the rapid insertion forces have been cleared out on our end. We took a few fatalities, unfortunately. A few lizardkin lost and some of our own men, sadly. How about yours?”

“Got a few that managed to breach the active zone, mostly beasts and several Shaded elves.” you grunt. Those things are slippery… “but both carriers have been neutralized, one including the vast majority of passengers. Had a bit of help, though. Seems the Rabbitkin finally decided to get off their fluffy asses. They’ve brought artillery and manpower. Well, rabbitpower.”

“Ah, the Prince will be more than happy to hear that,” she says with clear relief. “We’ve still got work to do in clearing out the city, but I think that’s the last of the major forces anticipated. You may want to link up properly to inform him of the situation. We’ll proceed with hunting down the final forces.”

I think we should stay alert and do a perimeter sweep.
Judging by how much preparations the enemies have made in order to win this battle, I'm going to assume that we're not in the clear yet. This simultaneous three-way attack (mounted charge to the north, siege constructs to the south, drop pod to threaten their leaders) seems like a tactical decision, rather than a desperate last push - if they had all this stuff concentrated on one side of the capital then the lizards would've surely lost at least half of their city. I think that Kholm's general wanted to separate lizard commanders and thin their defences, and then reveal his trump card - unleash a number of specialized shadow beasts from the waterside. These bastards came in all shapes and sizes, it wouldn't be a surprise if there were a variant capable of amphibious or aerial assault. Cut the defenders forces in half by moving through the river - bam, each half is sandwiched between siege constructs/new beasties/mobile chargers.

Even if everything that was stated above is wrong and Kholm's forces retreat, they could at least leave us a final 'fuck you' and contaminate the river or something.

While she might have a point, you still don’t like the idea of leaving anything to chance. This was a far more coordinated event than the last two battles you got into. “I’ll get around to it. Going to do a final perimeter sweep to check for any last ‘surprises’.”

“Hm. Fair enough,” Izumi concedes. “Let me know once you’ve finished, and I’ll be sure to tell the Prince and the Lizards to expect company. Out.”

Hopefully, this wouldn’t take too long- you need to take a running leap or two back towards the city to catch enough air to get back to that updraft- the flames are still going, sadly, and you suspect there’ll be a lot more in flames by the time forces manage to do anything to put them out…

But, you’ll get back to that later. Right now, you proceed to look down at the surrounding area with a critical eye, nose, and ear- just in case anything a bit unusual pops out at you…gah, you’re really going to need to figure out some way to keep your height longer. You’d need a lot of sheer force to propel yourself upwards...maybe if there was a way to miniaturize a blast and keep it to mostly concussive force as opposed to any kind of mana burn damage inflicted...

Your flight takes you over the treeline easily- nothing there but a few fallen bodies- seems the Rabbitkin had a bit of action before they found you, but only a bit. However, as you loop around to the southeast, that’s not what alarms you.

What alarms you is the small massing of what seems like shadowy incarnations of fishpeople, near the coast’s edge. Thick with shadowy ichor dripping from them, and glowing eyes much as others, but you can clearly see fins on their back and webbed feet. They don’t seem to notice you, however, instead turned inwards to themselves and not moving from their secluded spot on the cove. Odd…

What’s odder still is when they turn away back towards the water, skulking back into the depths from where they came. They’re retreating…?

Yeah, you’re not going to just let them report. They’ll be noticed missing, no doubt, but better them uncertain of how much you know than giving them any possible advantage. Fortunately, the solution, to you, is easy.

They’re in water. You know a bit about generating electricity. It’s practically begging to happen.

Like a dart, you dive for the group, aiming for the centermost target, your body already crackling with electric energy.

They don’t even see you before you’re within reach, and you’re quick to pull up right before hitting the water. You’re pretty sure spine his snapped on impact…

...although you probably shouldn’t have just splashed down in the water like that. Well, not too big of an issue, all things considered- despite the fact that they look like sharks at a feeding frenzy...well.

Soup’s on.

You let your electric energy flow and spark out of you, and although it’s not nearly enough to electrify the entire lake surface...it’s certainly enough to shock the hell out of them when they close in, their bodies sizzling all too quickly when they so much as attempt to touch you as the electric current conducts right to them.

You’re glad for the practice, honestly. Would be a hell of a light show if you could do that in thin air. Would be hard to saturate the area, though…

At any rate, a quick further check doesn’t seem to reveal anything else, which is good...you’d hate to leave the rest of the fun stuff to those rabbits. Now you just need to get back to the surface…

A few hours later, and just about everything is clear; enough that the Lizardkin have taken to careful patrolling again as repairs are underway, with assistance from the Human and Bearkin militaries.

Izumi had been most concerned about an area that she described as essentially a daycare for the Lizardkin- where they had much of their families stay and learn for a while. She’d immediately left to check on it. By then, you’d managed to at least be introduced to the Rabbitkin leader- or rather, as he called it, the ‘Outcasts’; turns out your aid was none other than Thorumin himself, come on the suggestion of the Veilweavers, no less.

“T’was a very risky proposition, for us, I think,” he admits to you; the Rabbitkin is a lithe one, his coloration a white and black mix, a splotch on his eye in particular standing out. In his hand is an ornate saber, the hilt ornate and with some sort of rabbit decal on it. “However, our hosts insisted, and, well...I was under the impression that we had to attempt SOMETHING anyway. It wasn’t long after that I heard that the humans were striking back, and I felt it was indeed our chance.” His voice is surprisingly deep for a rabbit, and his mannerism is every bit a gentleman soldier. “You have my thanks for the assistance earlier, miss…”

“Yvrace,” you’d said quickly. There were few pleasantries after that, mostly discussions with him, the Prince, the Lizardkin Captain- who you’d finally learned was named Za-Leil-, and Braun. With the Rabbitkin you’d have been searching for having come to you (somewhat, apparently Felgrund wasn’t keen on committing many forces any time soon), that led to the next play of things. Although this time, with Za-Leil’s assurance that he would do his best to marshal his forces through the land and aid the cause, that meant the Alliance’s ‘little’ army was growing big enough to make a play onto any of the nearby areas…

Eventually, it’s decided that the best thing to do at this point is to try to convince the Veilspeakers to assist. Thorumin had mentioned that they seemed to be ‘entirely too confident in regards to the situation- I confronted them on it, and they went on about some ‘seeing beyond the web to the strands’ sort of thing. I couldn’t quite make heads or tails of it, honestly, but from the time they’ve allowed us to live with them, they seem to claim some sort of skill at foresight.” He harrumphs at that. “I’m not keen on the whole ‘destiny’ malarky, to be honest, but they’ve done us a great kindness, so I chose not to speak aloud about it. If you’re going back there, then I and my forces will remain here for the time being to assist in repairs and the city’s defense.”

“Considering this would be a diplomatic mission, I certainly don’t think we’ll need to move the entire army,” the Prince muses. “However, I would think it would be a good idea to present an accurate cross-section of our currently amassed forces, future vision or not. Just a handful from each, really...”

“I’ll come,” Braun immediately says. “My daughter can helm things in my absence.”

“Excellent. Za-Leil?” He turns to the Lizard Captain.

“Mmm...I must protect the royal family,” he says carefully. “However, I will request Si-Han and Kri-Yan to lead the gathered warriors in my absence. I will not do this until the royal family has returned, however. It is still too dangerous to call them back just yet. It will also take a day or two to gather all my kin from the surrounding areas. I ask your patience in those matters, but can otherwise permit a small group with Si-Han to accompany you in matters of diplomacy.”

“Hm...very well.” The Prince nods. “That sounds acceptable. We’ll move out in two days from now, then.” And then he turns to you and Izumi. “I would ask that you both accompany us, if you don’t mind. As a...show of capability, you see.”

You shrug. He’s the one holding the paycheck, so to speak. “Of course,” Izumi answers more enthusiastically. “I hope we can convince them.”

“I trust you will. As for now, I believe that this concludes our meeting? We’ll reconvene at...perhaps let’s say midday tomorrow?” The gathered leaders nod in agreement, before splitting up.

“I’ll be helping tend to the injured, or perhaps assisting if any vital construction needs doing,” Izumi says idly before heading off. You, on the other hand…

Well, the place was still recovering, of course- would be for a while. But considering all you’ve done, they wouldn’t mind if you took a look around the marketplace, would they? If for no other reason than to make sure that people’s livelihoods weren’t destroyed. Basically scouting, even.

...Well, no, that’s not the reason and you’re not even going to bother trying to justify it. You just want to see what they’ve got.

The block of merchant shops and buildings is, fortunately, largely intact, although you can tell that there were some forces that came through here judging by the overturned stalls and the occasional collapsed wall. There’s a plume of smoke nearby, but to your eyes it’s clearly tapering off; the remnants of something burning as opposed to something still up in flames. There’s a number of mixed guards here patrolling the streets, as are a few brave souls in what you can only term merchant’s robes and similar garb trying to fix up their storefronts here and there. The occasional urchin Lizard child scampers about, nominally ignored, often helping in repairs, but one or two get lightly reprimanded when they try to get a bit of sticky fingers. One particular storefront seems to have been more totaled than others, the older looking Lizardkin openly weeping over his lost building- a small hut who’s goods you can’t see from here, due to being buried under rubble. Some other buildings have damage, as well, but nothing to that extent.

There’s a few opportunities here, you suppose...but where to start?

Well, you do recall that bounty on books...might as well see if there’s any decent reading around here.

After a few minutes of scouting around (and dodging one or two curious children), you end up noticing somewhere that might be what you wanted- it’s a small store, barely a hut, but it’s got a rack or two of thatched books, and a number of scrolls there for perusal. The owner of the store, a hunchbacked, crabby-sounding sort, makes a snuffling snort from behind a book, eyes glaring from behind a pair of spectacles as he looks up at you. “What, what?” He pauses briefly, and blinks- before chucking a book right at your head with a gawk which you catch. “OUT! Crazy monster! Not gonna get my readings, you-!”

“Hold it!” You shout quickly; no reason to get anyone interested in your business. “I’m not an invader, I’m just a customer!”

“Nyeh? Customer!?” He squints, sniffling again as he adjusts his glasses. “Don’t look like normal. Problem, then, girl? Need help, hm?”

Oy. “No. I just wanted to look over your stock. See if there was anything interesting.” You wonder if he got any business beforehand, considering his attitude…

“Fine. Come look. But be quick. Was dangerous, still dangerous. Need to finish counting my stock,” is what he offers. “So no playing.”

Fine, fine...now, to see if the old leatherhead has anything worth getting…

As much as he’s clearly impatient for you to leave, you’re impressed. His books and scrolls are...extremely informative, for the most part, at least in terms of how the Lizards do things. In particular, one rather thick and detailed book gives you explicit details for ritual circles, the individual runic script needed, estimated power needed, and words to speak for certain effects. A basic example even shows you how to make a personal healing circle, a dome for protection, divination chants, and that’s just for basic stuff...there’s some advanced works in the back here that’d require even more mana than what you’d be able to manage by yourself- stealth rituals, to physical empowerment to...it’d take a LOT just to get through this, but if you could copy the inscriptions and it actually worked on other plains, that’d be impressive.

Of course, if it didn’t, then it’d still be an excellent get for the library, you think.

There’s another book not far from it that details the history of rituals, as known by the Lizardfolk; where the source of the magic supposedly comes from (the mana of dead gods, supposedly…) theories and suppositions by old masters of the art that sought to internalize the magic called forth by said rituals... Another thick book that would take a while to read, and likely very valuable.

There’s a couple of others that look interesting- not nearly as much as the first two, but still useful. Case studies about common ritual magics and their uses in society, and the cultural differences surrounding them (again, as known to the Lizardkin); likely a fair bit of bias, but still certainly useful- particularly the one that attempts to go deeper into how the Marshwalkers seem to consider things.

The last is also fairly impressive- more of a history book of great ritualists; individuals that could cast complex and powerful spells entirely on their own, a feat nearly unheard of in ‘modern’ day. It also tells of the specific rituals that made them famous, and how they’d be reenacted in modern times, made more efficient by changes to the scripts.

“You take too long!” With that single yell, you’re jolted out of your perusal. “Hurry up and pick, and buy! Else I’m throwing you out! Busy!”

Right...crap, you don’t have any money immediately on you. You’d have to either go back and request some from the Prince- he should have more than enough spare change...or maybe you can see if you can work anything out with this old lizard.

> “Alright, alright. Look, I’ll be back, okay? It’ll be quick next time.” You just need to pop down to the Prince and hope he’s in a good mood…

Hm. Well, you don’t reallllly want to deal with the Prince right now- you don’t think he’ll take it out of your pay, but you don’t like that risk regardless. “Actually...I was hoping that we might be able to work out a deal. Are you sure there isn’t anything you need doing? Any errands ran or tasks finished?” Usually folks like this, especially after a battle, need SOMETHING done… “We could make a trade, so to speak. Services for goods.”

The fact that he doesn’t immediately blow you off is heartening. He adjusts his glasses slightly as he squints at you harshly. “Mmm...catch.”

“Pardon?” Catch?

“The catch. Always a catch! Don’t act like you’re innocent!” You’re pretty sure that if he had a stick, he’d be waving it right now. Folks like you, always a catch, always!”

Great. You know this kind- better to just let him think he’s right. “The ‘catch’ isn’t anything that concerns you, your people, or your store, or anything related to you. It’s something that you would never have to worry about, ever.”

“Hmph. Other motives. Always other motives.” He snorts, nodding to himself. “You hold this deal, hm? No tricks.”

“None at all,” you assure. “What do you need me to do?”

He sniffs. “Walk to the north. ‘Round the lake. Village there, north end of the marsh. Near the walkers. Kinfolk. You find them, you ask for Tu-Dah’s boy. Not giving a name, just ask for Tu-Dah’s boy. You come back, you tell me if they’re living or dead. With proof, here? Got things to account for here, can’t go looking myself. Do that, you can pick a book. Maybe two books if they’re alive. Deal?”

Hm...that wouldn’t take too long, but…

You might be able to squeeze a bit more out of this, if you play your cards right. Dollars to donuts that this kid is family, and if he’s that concerned about family… “That sounds like a rather important task…” you hazard.

“It is. Don’t screw it up!” He warns acidly.

Right. Time to channel your inner Lorelei a bit. “Well, I wouldn’t, I don’t think, but I’m worried that, y’know, going all that way…could be rough, especially with all this mess about.”

“Hmph. Got wings, you can fly! Get there, get back!” He waves off.

“And just put myself at risk if there’s still shadows there or worse?!” You didn’t even have to fake all the insult in your tone then. It’d still be a risk, and as tempting as flying or gliding WOULD be, you’re not going to roll the dice like that. “You’d have to give me at LEAST a third book to make it worth that kind of stress.”

“Third book!” He snorts, then spits on the ground to the side. “Figures. Folks always wanting more, more, more. Mill the stone til’ powder. Feh!” He glares at you. “Fine, strange one. You get three books. You get there, get back by midday tomorrow, hear!?” It WAS getting late in the evening...but what he didn’t realize was that you could likely make it there and back in no time, if you really needed to.

“Fine,” you allow with a simple nod. He just grumbles at you and waves you away with a flick of his wrist- enough of his time has been wasted, he no doubt feels.

When you exit the hut, you take a look at the evening colors- the sun’s just about to dip over the horizon. The weeping Lizard has gone, and there are more soldiers out now. Many of the merchants are setting to leave, now, but a few remain that you can see...

We should acquire at least a little local currency to prevent this issue again.
Is there a universal currency, or does each race mint and distribute it's own, seeing as they're mostly all sovereign nations?
>>
>>3258131
Answering this one since it's something you can 'look up'- a global trade currency. Not gold, surprisingly. It's a copper-esque substance mined from the earth and largely valued for use in complicated rituals. Value is based on the imprint of the coin, and forgeries (that is, coins not developed by a royal house) are determined via a basic and minor ritual (which is really more like a spell with components, such is its simplicity) that can detect whether there was the proper 'signing' ritual done to affirm it's genuinely made by the Coinprinters. These are a selection of High Ritualists made up of at least one of every major race on the landmass who also are extremely neutral and only print coins on request from racial/country leaders and if everyone agrees to do it.

Well, no reason to not get a move on. Besides, people are starting to eye you a bit closer, you’ve noticed. Ideally this’ll just be a quick in and out. But first...wouldn’t do to not notify people, at least. “Hylinde?” you call on your Murmur Stone. “Come in. I’m just letting you know that I’ll be beyond city limits for a bit. Going out on an errand.”

“I’m here. Errand?” is the response. “What sort of errand?”

“An errand to get us a little extra when we leave. Book shopping,” you quickly respond, already hopping to the highest rooftop you can see. You won’t be flying all the way there, but you can at the least get some practice in… “So I need to check on a village not too far from here in order to make that happen.”

“Ah,” she says in understanding. “Well, I’ll let the proper people know. Hurry back. Out.”

With that settled, you take off; no more fire to get height, but you won’t be gliding for that long, anyway- maybe a few moments here and there to make sure you’re on the right track. He said it was to the north, then, go around the lake, then to the edge of the marsh...shouldn’t be TOO hard to find...ah, there we are. A path, perfect.

Just as you expected, it takes you not even an hour to get there after following the pathway…

But there’s not a whole lot to see. Destruction abounds; although a small village, it’s been not just ransacked, but demolished, it appears. The bodies here are far less ‘clean’ than several of the earlier villages you saw, parts and gore littering the street, and precious few homes or other buildings remain standing. There’s a stone building that may have been some sort of storage area, a couple of houses, and...not much else.

You wouldn’t be surprised if Tu-Dah’s kid is among the fallen, but...couldn’t hurt to investigate and see. There are a few Lizards milling about, clearly shellshocked; limply picking through ruins, some consoling others- but not a one seems to even recognize your intrusion, such is their malaise. But, if there’s some still alive...well, that means you’ve got to at least give it a shot. You won’t make any real headway in this without talking to someone…

>There’s an older Lizardkin limping away from a trashed hut- he’s looking at something in his claws with clear sorrow, but otherwise is alone.
>A younger Lizardkin child is staring blankly at a burnt pile of wood and ash. No tears, but she’s got a serious case of thousand-yard stare.

Or do anons have different ideas what HQ upgrade we should purchase next?
My reasoning is that a big chunk of Miranda's new experimental techniques are ranged + we could then scape up enough motes to add Hardened Targets for newbies to train. But honestly our greenhorns also could use some close combat training, all of them are clearly lacking in that regard. By the way, the Lab has not yet provided any benefits to justify more upgrades, and Dorms are kind of meh.

Well, the older guy might be your best best for this sort of thing- ruined though the village may be, he might well know the kid you speak of.

It’s when you approach him that you find yourself a bit curious...he still doesn’t seem to notice you, but what he’s got in his hand...it’s some sort of trinket- a small sculpture of...something. You’re not sure, but it looks vaguely like a Lizardkin. Well, whatever. He can mourn after you-

“...what is this, then.” He phrases it like a question, but it seems more like...resignation. “Another creation of the dark, come to finish us?” He huffs out something vaguely resembling a laugh, but sounds mostly like a gurgle to your ears. “You take our homes, our loved ones. You gorge yourself on death. Mm.” He grasps the small token tightly as he can manage- but you’re not in the mood for his lamenting.

“I’m not here to kill you or anyone else. I’m looking for someone,” you respond. “A boy, on behalf of a bookseller in the city; told me to look for Tu-Dah’s kid.”

He lets out that gurgling laugh again. Oddly enough, he isn’t even crying, still. “Haghahaha...and what would it matter were I to say or not? He is dead. I am dead. We are dead. You speak to ghosts, creature.”

That's not how that works. It's saying "I want this, but don't have the cash for it. Can you chip in, you'll find it useful, honest?"

>what else are we supposed to spend our motes on?
>our motes
>our
That's the key. We can chip in for business upgrades, because we're the ones deciding to make the purchase.
We could spend some of those motes on utility gear or existing equipment upgrades (I'm sure we could find someone in the Intersection to improve our gear)

>>3260475
>We're not getting any money for renovations from Sal
That's literally where the company funds come from. He pay into our base upgrade fund through some esoteric system.

Sal did that only once. During Q&A Handler said that HQ pool gets motes through our donations, no changes to contracts.
Miranda is the division leader, keeping our outgoer outfit competetive, checking on our members and purchasing stuff for HQ is her responsibility. I don't get why anons ignore this so much.
>>
>>3260505
>Try and convince him that someone still cares for the kid.

>>3260506
>That's literally where the company funds come from. He pay into our base upgrade fund through some esoteric system.
That was a one time thing. Ever since, we've been paying with our own cash, as well as what the team has chipped in. Sal's never been a part of those.

>It's saying "I want this, but don't have the cash for it. Can you chip in, you'll find it useful, honest?"
That's what we were doing in the first place. We'd call up a meeting to discuss what people would want to get, then everybody chipped in for one big purchase. We could have everyone in SES vote for what to buy, if you want to.
>>
>>3260525
>purchasing stuff for HQ is her responsibility.
She has purchasing authority, but there's no way Sal would make us purchase company assets out of pocket, that'd be exploitative. That'd be like an IRL company forcing employees to pool personal money to buy break room upgrades.
We've also talked about buying outfits with company cash, so anyone can use them, there we never went with it. That wouldn't have been an option if that was a single cash injection.
>>
>>3260505
>Try and convince him that someone still cares for the kid.
>>
>>3260537
Well, our job contracts don't add motes to the HQ pool. It gets motes from donations from employees, employer and maybe Intersection contracts between companies/establishments. You could nag Handler if you have issues with it.

As I understand it, a contract pays more than we take home. What we don't get goes to SES directly. Part of SES's cut is paid into company funds every so often, which can be used for base upgrades or other company-owned assets.

>>3260505
Have I grossly misunderstood? If so, we need to have a chat with Sal. It's stupid to expect the employees to pay for everything.

I don't remember company subsidies being ever mentioned before. Handler's answer during Q&A was pretty straightforward.

well, we technically don't need to pool in money because sal slowly gives to the HQ funds, but if we want the upgrades NOW, we have to.

Sal's donation was a one-off to be nice. His split of the money goes to other things which will be revealed in the (likely near) future. Rest assured it DOES involve the company.

Basically yeah, that last line is gonna be expanded on probably next time you get back. There are some cool upgrades you'll not have to pay for 'out of pocket', so to speak.

I'm going to be using the 'new progression' method of how everyone gets to spend their downtime then, so. Best time to introduce THAT little wrinkle in things.

I've got SO MUCH I want to write out now, I really do. I've been very recently inspired immensely with ideas for some possible jobs.

Monkey Island? A setting where death doesn't exist and we duel with quips?

>>
>>3260669
Resident evil 2 remake? Kindom hearts 3? METRO?

Speaking of missions/jobs, what settings are you anons interested in seeing in the future? For me:
>Pure sci-fi world, maybe get Cylica and Owlia with us to steal every tech we come across. Space travel and such.
>hunger games/battle Royale world, I remember there was job option we ignored in past threads that sounded like this.
>Ocean world. I doubt Handler is playing subnautica currently. I just thought how cool it is to have a job involving the ocean. We went to a sky world how about a full on water world? Hell the job could be about hunting a Moby dick or something similar to Disney's Atlantis movie I don't care.
>Grimdark setting and where we ultimately end it's world. like that Nippon Ichi game: the evil route in soul nomad but still get paid before their world ends (or we just be a kleptomaniac murderhobo throughout the whole job.)
>Cyberpunk— racing in cars/motorbikes, stealing tech, hacking tech and punching cyborgs
>Magical idol stuff. just to laugh at Miranda.
>Military MGs
>tropical jungle world. We Apocalypse now.
>SENTAI/KAMEN RIDER WORLD. Miranda going full chuuni/ham would be amazing.
>>
>>3260949
I'd like to see a newbies-only cyber-punk mission, where all of them could kind of fit: Jago and Prima as enterntainer bots, Owlia has augs, Mono as some blacksite secret lab freak. And Cylica as mad scientist team leader.
>>
>>3260949
>Pure sci-fi world, maybe get Cylica and Owlia with us to steal every tech we come across. Space travel and such.
I'd love to steal a frickin' battle cruiser or something. "What do you mean We don't have the space to store it?"
>>
>>3260656
Honestly, that sounds more like merch and decor, not proper upgrades. Though armory supplies sound nice. As for uniform, a simple 'Silver Eye' brooch would suffice. and gaudy bowling shirts with 'S.E.S.' written on the back with tacky rhinestones
>>
>>3261217
>Though armory supplies sound nice.
A basic range of different types of gear (handgun, rifle, dagger, longsword, spear, etc.) would be a good foundation (actually, that might give our looting tendencies a use; we can just dump less expensive gear in the armory).
Alternatively, We could use it for highly specialized equipment, the sort of stuff you only need once in a while, but is expensive enough to not justify purchasing for ourselves.

>a simple 'Silver Eye' brooch would suffice.
I like it, though we'd need magnetic versions for the robots.

I really want to see what the robots look like off-world. It should be interesting seeing ho they're disguised.
>>
>>3261013
Now now, we are constrained by dealmakers from just stealing things. We have to execute the captain and claim the ship as battle spoils, that works.

Well...happy fella, ain’t he? Nonetheless, you still have a job to do, and he’s likely the best option for it. You’ve just got to convince him that it’s worth the effort. “Look, someone out there was willing to bargain with something that looks like me to see what’s come of him. Whether he’s dead or alive, someone cares. Someone wants to know if their son, or their nephew, or whoever is safe, or otherwise, and it’s gonna tear them up inside if they don’t know.”

There’s silence for a few moments, and you do your best to not let your annoyance show. No reason to push things by accident...and for a moment, his eyes connect with yours- and there’s nothing there. A blankness you’re pretty familiar with- one that says that someone has lost every shred of hope they had because there’s nothing left for them whatsoever. A nothing that says they they’re ready to die and be done with it all, for real and for good…

“I saw the boy,” he says neutrally. “Last screaming in fear, running towards the grainary. Now rubble and dust. As is he. As are we all.” At that, he turns. “Leave me. I go to my daughter soon.”

Well, at least you’ve got that much…

Turning away from the old man, you can see that the younger girl has laid down amongst the rubble, still with that wide stare. The amputated Lizard is in a heated, yet quiet debate with an older, more heavyset lizard that has a bit of armor on him, no less; although it seems like it’s very homemade, to say the least. There’s a larger Lizardkin, and a smaller one nearby that both look despondent, but unsure of what to say or do. As for which building is the granary...well, shouldn’t be too hard to find.

>Head straight to the pile of rocks and rubble; that’s probably the granary.
>See about the little girl. She’s just...laying there.
>Ask the two debaters some questions, just in case.

Might be none of your business, but honestly, the girl just kinda...lies there. Hardly breathing, hardly looking. She doesn’t have that air of utter despondency like the old Lizard does, but her eyes are looking at nothing and yet everything. If it wasn’t for her expression, you’d have thought her just going for a nap in the ashes.

The crunch of your feet does nothing to alarm her; neither does your shadow falling over her. Does...does she even recognize your presence? Someone suffering from shock usually doesn’t get this deep into it…

A tap of your toe against her belly does nothing. Nearly dead to the wor-

“Please, kick harder.” Oh, there she is. “Perhaps lungs will stop then.” Ah. Wow, this town is just done with everything, huh?

Well, you’re not getting paid to do it, and there’s no reason to, soo… “Outta luck, kid. I was wondering if you knew anything about a child- Tu-Dah’s boy.”

There’s a silence between the two of you; but curiously enough, her eyes flicker- for hardly a second, there’s a spark of SOMETHING there before it’s quashed, the dead stare returning. “Gone. Like family. Like friends. Like everything.” Hmph. Well, that doesn’t give you much- “Grain house fell, So-Dah ran. Ran alllll the way away that way." She points towards the west; you can see the swamp continue on, but getting even muddier. "All the way into Marshthings land. Then grandmother and mother died. Then father died. Then brother died. Then breadmaker died. All died. All gone. Just Mi-Rah.”

You look around; seeing at least three other Lizardkin here. You know that’s not what she meant, but...this is getting old.

I wouldn't call it 'the whole' reason - some people wanted to unwind after non-combat mission, it's been a while since we were the obviouse 'good guys', maybe someone was hoping to find another alchemist since it's our second Swords&Sorcery mission, and so on and on. It's not only about Izumi.
>>
>>3263406
I think the kid and his sister were mentioned being seen in passing during that festival we went to. Being known to be involved in bettering the intersection might improve our standing in some people's eyes. And "neighbor" was being used more loosely since they at least live in the same dimensional space.

I have no problems reporting how bad the damage is out here, but we're also not exactly practiced in being tactful. Our look doesn't really scream "touchy feely moments" right now either. Plus, picking up someone and dragging them around in this context really is out of character, and likely wouldn't do anything for either side that a few words wouldn't do better.

Tch. If you could get a small mote for all the lamenting you’ve heard in your lifetime...well, you’d probably go nuts before you could appreciate it. “You must’ve really not cared about them at all.”

THAT gets her attention, the eyes flickering up to you with something close to anger, though she doesn’t move at all. “What?”

You just shrug. “Well, considering that you’re just laying down here to die instead of doing anything to remember them by, or even bothering to remember their names…” you shrug. “Well, seems kinda obvious to me. Am I right?”

“You...you DARE…” and finally, she lifts herself up, a spark of SOMETHING in her eyes. “You don’t...don’t know a thing!” Yelling now. Good.

“Don’t I? Then prove it,” you say as evenly as possible. “Unless you want them to die a second time.”

That seems to make her shrink back. “You...you would? You could?”

You shake your head. “No. You would. You could. Because if you die...no one would even remember them. You don’t think they deserve better?”

She freezes at that, her mouth opening and closing like a fish.

But there’s something in there, now. A spark, kindling a flame. “If you do...prove it.”

Gah, enough of this. You’re starting to attract looks, which is not quite what you want right now…

Ah, there, that hut’s standing well enough to get some height off of. There’s not much light left…

Without bothering to say anything else to the girl, you leap up to the rooftop. She said that way, right? Ugh. This might get annoying.

Spreading your wings, you take off into the twilight air. So much work for a set of books…

...even if they’re good ones.

Actually, I'm almost certain of it. What the new schedule will be, I don't know, but I'm thinking at least three times a week minimum.

I'm going to be using the 'new progression' method of how everyone gets to spend their downtime then, so. Best time to introduce THAT little wrinkle in things.
That reminds me, we didn't get to see what our techies have cooked up for us to use. Over a dozen threads ago Owlia mentioned that they've made 'improved Murmur Stones' and replicated some sigils, but we've not actually seen them yet. Or maybe everyone else in our outfit is already using these gizmos but somehow forgot to mention it to Miranda. just like outgoer discounts and privileges
>>
>>3263773
i think they are not done yet...or they are this ones, but they can't really shine because the improved murmur stones were basically walkie takies that could allow you to speak with more than 1 person at a time.
>replicated some sigils,
I think those weren't ready yet. Owlia was able to replicate them but they ran out of juice pretty fast.
>>
>>3263773
>we didn't get to see what our techies have cooked up for us to use.
This is partially why I wanted to got to that potion shop. Potions would be great single use items for a number of functions.

What we need sigil-wise is just some small single-use ones that perform some utility function, like short-term invisibility or similar. The larger ones are cool, but they're not our techie's specialty, and seem to be giving them a lot of issues.
I wonder if they'd have better luck getting a similar result from crystals...
By the way, did we put on the condenser? We're never going to get any use out of the thing if we don't wear it during downtime.
>>
>>3264118
We need murder stones that come with video.

Also a visit to a land where the Gods actually exist, and we were summoned by them to aid their chosen one, who may not necessarily be the best of people. Or represent them in a fight.

Pretty much I want to have a combat mission where we aren't just roller-stomping everything, either by facing powered up dudes, or by having our own powers limited.
>>
>>3264692
>Pretty much I want to have a combat mission where we aren't just roller-stomping everything,
As we are, randa can pretty much stomp anyone in any one fight. Our limiting factor is our mana cap and regen. Fighting similar powerlevel dudes could work, but it would have to be a single fight, or have like a week between fights. Maybe an extremely high magic world, with like 6000+ daily regen?

Operating with restricted powers sounds more viable, but I'm not sure how we'd achieve it without simply further limiting our mana, or restricting us to fists or something.

Really, if we want to go less ROFLstomp, the easiest way to run a job as someone else. Either robot would be a good choice, Izumi is close to randa, Lori isn't combat focused enough here, and the techies aren't big on fighting either.
>>
>>3264881

Alternatively, we could have a world with NO mana.

Not even for the condenser.

And we could have to limit our mana use.
>>
>>3264911
Unless the pay is stupid high, it would be way better for us to skip the mission other that pays less or wait a few days before choosing again.
>>
>>3264980
Miranda HAS been into no-mana worlds I think. She even had gone so far as to go into a pro-wrestling focused one, being a closeted chuuni she is.
Now I'm imagining idol/schoolgirl jobs aren't that far our of possibilities.
>>

That wasn't a no-mana, it was SUPER HUMAN PRO WRESTLING. Which is awesome.
>>
>>3265158

But we don't know the pay, her rank or how young she was when she took the contract. Maybe right now those missions simply aren't worth it.

It doesn’t take you exceptionally long, at least, before you spot an obvious clue in the mud- footprints; dried and stale, but they’re at least a direction. Steps are far enough apart to be a child’s run, and no blood yet, so no injuries- or at least none that were free flowing. Positive sign so far, but not exactly decisive…

It’s dark, now, though. Nothing immediately in the vicinity, fortunately, but you do have to light things up to keep looking. The footsteps end briefly near a mossy tree, the point under the tree shows the signs of being disturbed- he must’ve taken a rest here before moving on. After a bit of looking around, you find they resume further on, in the same direction.
As you get further in, though, you notice a larger puddle of...something. Looking at it, and the vague deformation, you’re pretty sure he took a tumble here; might’ve slipped or tripped on something. Yeah, there’s handprints there- definitely fell.

What interests you, though, is how wet this print is- although not fresh, it’s not dried, either. Might just be the moisture in the air...or maybe he’s close. Hm…

Looking around, you case the area to try and find any clues.

The area seems barren at first, but then you notice something half buried in the muck a bit off to the right, nearly submerged in a puddle of brackish water. Some sort of pendant, a glittering gold and with some sort of inscription on it…

‘Be safe, be strong, be loved.’

Heartwarming. No blood on it; though it could’ve been washed off, you don’t think that’s the case. At least you’re still on the right path. Nothing more to do but continue forward...

That’s only confirmed when you hear rustling, and smell a tangy, sweet scent on the wind. Three of them, in fact. One well in front, and one to each side.

Their voices are low, whispering things. “Devil of the dark...what do you seek in this trespass?”

“I’m no demon. I’m just here for a lost child, sent by his grandfather.” It’s not a whole throated truth, since you don’t know the relation, but...makes sense enough. “That’s all.” Maybe if they have some sort of truth sensing, they’ll see what’s what and even help yo-

“Lost? None are lost to us.” Ah, nuts. “We embrace all who embrace our ways. He is of us, and we are his caretakers now. Your errand is at an end, darkspawn. Leave this place.” Seriously? What, they just force adopted him out of nowhere? That seems a bit...sudden.

But, as though to back up their statement, you can see them reveal themselves- and they look an awful lot like the webbed creatures you killed before. Minus all the shadow gunge, of course, and plus a bit more...swamp detrius and whatnot.

“Look, I just need to make sure the kid’s alive or dead. Let me just see him, and we can go from there, okay?” You really don’t need this at the moment, but if you’re going to get those books, then… “Not even going to touch him. Swear it. Just need to lay eyes on him.”

There’s a rustling as the trio mull this over. “You speak oddly for a denizen of the shadow…” It’s less a question and more a statement.

But it still annoys you. “Like I said, I’m not with any ‘shadow’. My appearance doesn’t tell the whole story.”

“Perhaps not…” the one to your right admits. “We shall test this. Hold here.” Friggen FINALLY…

The two on your sides hardly even move for the near half hour that you’re kept waiting; neither do you, although you’re mulling about what to do when you get back, really. They just sit there...dripping. Part of you wants to ask them SOMETHING, but honestly, you’re just annoyed. Maybe you’ll come back later for whatever reason, but as things stand...eh.

Finally, though, they return; the Marshwalker that was talking to you earlier, and...this young reed of a Lizardkin, at last. A vivid, earthy green color, he’s got a strange set of feathers on a vest that looks pretty amateurish, holding a small sword and buckler shield, dressed in raggedy cloth shorts and sandals. Nonetheless, he looks...sad. Yet determined. Honestly, you’re surprised. He’s got the look of a warrior in training…

There’s something close to a growl from the Marshwalker’s mouth. “Here is the youth. Hale and hearty. Does this satisfy you, then?” The boy doesn’t say anything to you, however- merely watching you with caution and interest.

“Well, good to know he’s alive. You ARE Tu-Dah’s boy, right?” His eyes widen briefly with surprise, but he nods. Good- last thing you needed was a liar- but his reaction seems genuine enough. “I need to take proof back that he’s still kicking around to the bookseller in the city.” You’re not sure what the bookseller will think of him being with the Marshwalkers, but honestly, it’s none of your concern. “So for that, I’ll need…”

>“Something from him. Something that the old Lizard will recognize and know means he’s alive.”

“Something from him,” you decide. “Something that the old Lizard will recognize and know means he’s alive.”

The young Lizardkin thinks briefly; you can see him talking to himself. Suddenly, his eyes light up, and he reaches for a small satchel on his hip- opening it, he takes out a small stone, with something inscribed on it. You’re not sure what, but it doesn’t seem to be any kind of word, more...an image that looks vaguely like an eye. Wordlessly, he gives it to the Marshwalker, who holds it out to you.

“Well, if you think that’ll work.” Hopefully it’ll mean something. Oh! Speaking of meaning something… “That reminds me, though. I think this might be yours- or someone’s, huh?” You hold out the pendant, and his jaw drops. Yeah, good enough. “Here. Think you’ll get more out of it than I would.” Tossing it over, he catches the muddy pendant, nearly stumbling in his emotional state. In response, the Marshwalker underhands the inscribed stone to you; it’s easily caught and stored away.

Finally, now you can-

“P-please…” Hm? The Lizardkin is finally speaking; his voice is raw, and he almost sounds like he’s having trouble controlling it. “Tell him...tell uncle I will be the dragon, one day.”

Hm. “Will do. Now if you’ll excuse me.”

You might risk flying the rest of the way back, for this. You’d rather sleep in a proper bed.

Fortunately, the forest is still quiet (usually a warning, but you suspect merely the results of an evacuation) and you don’t bother to return to the destroyed village- there’s nothing there anyway.

When you get back, the streets are quiet; you doubt the bookseller is still up. But you know someone who probably is… “Hylinde?”

“Yes?” Bingo. “Are you back, or is there trouble?”

“No trouble, I made it back fine. Had to detour a bit- the village up north is totaled end-to-end. A few made it out, though. You can hear her gasp, before the sounds of her standing up. Great. This means…

“Were there any injured? Is there anything we can do to help?” Oy, Izumi…

“Most of it was rubble. Seemed like there was only one injured there, and he was missing limbs. The rest of them that lived were fine, looks like. Look, I know you care, but don’t worry too much about this one- the village is literally destroyed. I wouldn’t be surprised if they came here looking for sanctuary. Or maybe revenge, who knows.”

“I...still, I’ll have to tell the Prince and the High Judicator in the morning,” Izumi presses.

“Fine,” you allow. “Just try not to make a massive production of it.”

“Hm.” She sighs. “Fair point. Well, they’ve put us up in the halls; the Captain says it’s where you first met him. The knights will direct you further once you get there. Out.” The line shuts off like that; kinda figured she’d act like that. But she didn’t at least sound angry or overly annoyed…

The halls are quick to find, and a quick poke at one of the night guards has you led to your very own private bedroom. The sheets are silken and honestly, you’re impressed. You’ll be sleeping rather well tonight…

Come morning, however, you’re feeling fresh. Need to stop by the bookkeeper’s store before midday; especially since you have a meeting at the same time. But, you’ve got time for something else, as well…

Eh. Well, downtime is downtime, but honestly, there’s not a whole lot here that calls your interest. Maybe you can get some early morning training done…

After your morning routine (no plumbing, but you’ve made washing up in worse environments work before) you head out to the courtyard; to no surprise, there’s a group of warriors in the midst of training on one side as some workers scurry to and fro. Izumi is off meditating in a corner, and everyone seems to be giving her a decent berth, out of respect if nothing else. You eye some of the Ko-Korathi; at least four more of them, not including the two you know, and they seem to be running mock combat in a couple of training rings as opposed to forms and dummy combat that the rank and file guards are. Kri-Yan seems to be on the sidelines, however, watching and cheering her allies on.

Something’s nagging at at you, but you can’t exactly place it...regardless, training usually goes better with a second live body to help. Although when you approach, it’s only the two that you know that don’t look at you with any kind of suspicion or even disdain. Unsure why- but it’s none of your concern. “Kri-Yan?”

The spoken looks at you with curiosity. “Ah. I trust you had a good rest?” You nod. “Good. We had many issues to resolve. I thank you for your assistance in the battle.”

“It’s fine,” you say easily. “I was hoping you might be willing to spar with me for a bit.”

At that, her eyes light up, and the others look surprised, a couple of them looking at her with disbelief- although they don’t risk saying anything as she rises, it seems, walking to the last empty ring. “I must admit interest in your fighting style. We shall keep things soft?”

>Yeah. Keep it light, more just keeping yourself limber than anything else.

Well, you’re in the mood to try something new...or at least, extremely rusty. “I have to admit, I’m curious about your fighting style as well. I’m more self taught than anything formal.” She nods in understanding- honestly, she’s probably the exception than the norm. You’ll be sticking to your gauntlets this time- the halberd’s okay, but there’s nothing quite like beating someone down with your own two fists. Not that you’ll be crunching HER skull, but the feeling is still similar.

You throw a few punches, limbering yourself up as she begins stretching. She has on wooden facsimiles of her blades; you don’t have anything specific, but you make no mention of it, and she doesn’t say anything pointing it out. No real armor or protective gear, either. Well, you’re not going to do a whole lot of punching here anyway…

There’s a bit of hooting as some of her fellows notice, and it’s clear they’re cheering for her and against you as she bows, you bow, and the match begins.

Initially, you can see that her kicks aren’t the only thing she uses; she’s more than fine with chops and hand stabs, although she likes to try and keep at a moderate range; she’s not a fan of getting too close. That doesn’t really fit with you, as you try to close the distance. Your right hand throws out a pair of jabs which are deflected; she snaps back with a defensive low kick which you just skip out of the range of. Her movements are flowing, dancer-like; you noticed that before, but up close it's pretty apparent just how well her positioning flows from one move to another. It's hard to see an opening that's actually an opening- she's prepared to move or counter even if it seems like she's got nothing to offer. There's always a position she's in that allows her to generate force for some movement or other; very little 'recovery' in any of her motions. Very impressive.

“You are devoted to your hands, I see. Powerful. Much like a beast stalking and hunting its prey. Very dangerous,” she offers as you back off of each other briefly.

“Kinda,” you admit. But you’re trying to branch out…and now’s probably a good time.

All things considered, you have to admit that she makes it look impressive as you back off from another sweeping kick, and she gracefully rotates out of the way of your counterstrike. Part of you wants to see if maybe you could put your own spin on it...might be considered a touch insulting to her...but, whatever. The way that blade arcs...wonder if you can do something similar. You’ve conducted mana to your legs before- as uncommon as it was, but it’s been ages. Can you…?

It’s almost like a pull string motor, or knocking against something mechanical to get it working again as you manage to close in and actually deliver a few kicks to her yourself to warm up for the idea. She meets them all gracefully, including one where she attempts to hook your own leg- you have to do a quick hop over to null that, and a back to prevent a response- she slips into a forward split and manages to roll laterally out of the way all in one motion somehow.

You start forward, but she’s angled at just the right position so that when she shifts her hips, you’re forced to back off lest her tail slap you clear across the face, allowing her to get back to a vertical base. A few more jabs are thrown, and she actually catches two to the torso before she tries to circle you- you’re not keen on letting her get anything going now that she seems to be wanting to pick up the pace. You try to catch her incoming, but she shifts her hips again- that tail’s getting a lot more use, now, looks like, and you’re forced to watch for it; the followup low strike with her leading leg nearly takes you off guard and entirely, and you’re forced to step back a bit more than you’d like. “Most impressive,” she offers. “All parts of the body are useful in combat, and we have more than most.”

“Right…” you admit. But you’ve been feeling fairly warmed up now; this should cause a bit of extra ache for her. You just need to channel your mana, and..force...it...DOWN!

A sea-green film of mana erupts over your legs, and you have to stop yourself from smiling; you sense there’s at least a smirk there, though, as Kri-Yan’s eyes widen a bit when you close the distance a bit faster than normal and send a low sweep towards her that she has to leap clear from, a minor wave of mana effusing from your leg as you do so. Yeah… you could get used to this. Burns a bit, though, but that’ll wear off; hell, it reminds you of when you first got into this whole magic thing...

>Learned Legs Channeling (Basic)!

>This allows you to channel mana to your lower half more easily, allowing you to manipulate mana from your feet and legs, and opening up a few new varieties of skill for you to use and learn. It also provides a bit of extra lower-body defense, and can injure anyone that tries to touch them.

>Learned Magi-Bomber!
>A leg-variation of Magi-Blast, this is just you ‘kicking’ Magi-Blasts at the opponent instead of firing them from your hand, allowing you to keep said hands free for other endeavors. If you can get used to rapid fire kicking, this could be devastating...

>Learned Magi-Cutter!
>Essentially a leg version of Magi-wave, this is performed by swinging your legs at high speed while Leg Channeling is active. This version of the Magi-wave is slower, but you think you could get it to be stronger than your normal Magi-waves, even…

--------------

Before you can continue on very long with it, however, you hear a clapping nearby; who…?

Kri-Yan looks around as well, confused, before settling on something behind you and sighs. You turn to see...this tiny, chubby child of a Lizardkin in a rather flowery and fancy leaf dress and feathers in a headdress, clapping wildly at your antics. She’s a dark yellow coloration, and her eyes are deep silver; currently shining in admiration of your sparring. Kri-Yan looks less than amused, however, huffing before slapping a painted-on smile on her face. “You have returned so soon? I am glad, Va-Shi.”

“Kri-Yan!” If the girl noticed her annoyance, she makes no indication of it. “Father said we could return early! And now you can show me more fighting things! You and bat friend!”

Kri-Yan has the flattest look on her face right now- hell, you think her head literally evened out a touch. You glance over to her- behind her, you can see that the rest of the Ko-Korathi have curiously vanished- though you can see the tail of one just finish rounding the corner.

Part of you wants to follow them, honestly, but another part of you isn’t positive that it can be all THAT bad, right? “She seems enthusiastic, at least…” you mutter; you’re not even sure if that was meant to be a question or a statement.

Nonetheless, as the girl scurries over and Kri-Yan puts her ‘happy’ face back on, she quickly mutters back to you. “That is not a good thing.” Much louder, however, she sounds all smiles. “She knows different fighting things than me, yes. She is busy, but can help for a little.” The way she phases the word ‘can’ makes you rather certain that she meant to say ‘will’. That said...you’ve got some kids back home you’re teaching. Not to jinx yourself, but you’d think you have some experience under your belt with this sort of thing.

-----------

“And then I go POW! And they fall and its cool!” Or not.

“Something like that,” Kri-Yan states tiredly. Apparently, Va-Shi has a very...VERY particular view of what combat actually entails. She’s not to be shown any specific fighting techniques- combat forms at most for now. You can’t be strict with her or else she gets pouty and frustrated. And somehow all of this was communicated via nothing but stern looks and panicked expressions on Kri-Yan’s part. In short, there’s nothing you can ACTUALLY teach her at the moment. Which ultimately results in you and her mostly just pretending like she’s a savant that just needs polishing- frankly, you think it’s dangerous and utterly stupid, all things considered.

But you’ve been at this for about an hour, and it’s basically been just playtime with the kid. Not that she’s noticed any of this, of course. The rank and file soldiers on the other side of the courtyard occasionally glance your way, and you SWEAR you thought you saw some of them snicker, but by and large they’ve kept you alone. Va-Shi had asked you to demonstrate some of your abilities, which Kri-Yan only allowed after warning her that she wouldn’t be able to do them because of differences in origin. You’d used the opportunity to at least practice your leg channeling a bit more; it’s not hard to do, but it still is unusual, and it’s good to drill this sort of stuff into your head sooner than later so you don’t feel out of sorts in an actual fight. She oohs and aahs easily enough...but she’s still got it in her head that she or her people can do it anyway. Or will learn, at least.

However, as you look to the sky, you realize it’s not long before midday. You really need to get to the bookkeeper. You spare a glance at Kri-Yan, then motion towards the exit, and she sighs, but nods. “Va-Shi, our ally must be on her way."

(cont.)
>>
>>3268017
“Awww!” She doesn’t seem too put out; she WAS warned, after all. “Okay. Oh, but here!” And with that, she plucks a feather off of her cap, giving it to you. “You are a friend, so there is a feather! Don’t drop it!” She warns with all the gravitas of a 9-year-old. Although, looking at Kri-Yan’s face, that actually means something...well, you’ll have to ask her later. For now…

-----------

“Took your time, then.” The old keeper mumbles. His heart doesn’t seem to be in it as much as yesterday, though. “Well? Out with it. What’s his fate?”

“He’s alive.” You can visibly see him untense a bit; the old Lizard clearly cared more than he let on. But that’s not all. “He’s with the Marshwalkers, however. Staying with them, willingly.” That results in confusion, and more than a bit of that tension returning as you tell him the story. As you dig in your pouch and show him the engraving, you can see he wants to say something, but thinks better of it. “He said that he wanted me to tell you he ‘will be the dragon, one day.’” There’s a light of significance in that statement, judging by his reaction, but to you, he merely exhales.

“Fine, fine. Did good work. Three books, as promised. Take them.” Excellent. You don’t have a lot of time to waste anyway.

“Ah, good that everyone’s here.” You’d shown up not long after Izumi, turns out (she didn’t say anything about your little babysitting duty, fortunately), and all the other leaders had arrived as well. “Now, good news is that as I’m sure a few of you have noticed, the Royal Family is back within city limits.”

“Yes, although I advised against it, the High Judicator was adamant,” Za-Leil says mildly. “Still, this quickens things. Si-Han will accompany you along with ten of my warriors. We should have our forces ready to march by the time you return.”

The Prince nods. “And most of ours should be rested and ready to resume. Sounds all good. We’ve fifty folks all about in total. Thorumin, sure you’re not coming with us?”

He shakes his head. “I’m needed here. I’ll be staying and we’ll reconnect in due time.”

The Prince merely shrugs. “Right, then. Unless anyone has any further objections or questions?”

“Nothing in particular,” you note, “but...there was the matter of the shadow infected creatures I fought earlier.”

“Shadow infected creatures?” the Prince asks, turning towards you. As does everyone, for that matter.

“Well, I’m pretty sure they were Marshwalkers. Webbed feet and hands, fins on their backs?” They nod. “There were a few of those that were looking like they’d been infected with the shadow the other day when I did my final sweep. Nothing major, and they were trying to report back to somewhere, is my guess. I didn’t give them the opportunity, but just in case, I figured I should let you know.”

“That’s...unnerving. And thank you, though I wish you’d brought attention to that sooner,” the Prince laments. “Still, if you’re certain that you destroyed the scouting party entirely, that DOES give us some time. We’ll just have to step quickly.” The rest nod in agreement. “The wagons should be waiting to the south exit, correct?” Za-Leil nods. “Well, then, let us be off.”

Ideally, it wouldn’t take too long…

After about a day’s march, interestingly enough, the journey seems to be surprisingly trouble free so far. Although part of you wonders if due to luck or anything in particular, you’re not the only one thinking the same. Looking around, it’s clear that everyone’s just waiting for the other shoe to drop. No one’s in a talking mood.

When the webs grow thicker, it’s almost a relief. Big webs meant big spiders. However, these webs are almost signs- not your usual spiderwebs. There’s patterns that you can’t understand, (if there’s even anything to understand), symbols you don’t know the meaning of. A number of the bears with you are starting to growl in concern, and the men grow uneasy. Only the Lizardkin with you appear unfazed, though by the way their eyes are darting around, they’re merely better at masking it…

Frederique is more in awe, from the looks of it. “Whooooaaaa...these are so big! And so interesting!”

“Our thanks, little one.” That came from above you, and almost as one the entire procession cranes their heads upwards. “We are no Dawnspinners- but there is a certain...elegance to our art we should strive to uphold.”

Down, down, down from the webbed up treetops is a large, large Drider spider-taur; her abdomens both human and spider a dark blue-grey, chitinous legs string web as she lowers herself via her spinnerets. Her arms are laced with strange, swooping, painted designs, while adorning her face is a veil (of course), covering her eyes, but not her mouth.

“Ah, greetings to you, Lady Veilspeaker,” the Prince offers- you figure he’s got no idea who this one is, but better to be safe than sorry. “I am here to-”

“We know,” the Veilspeaker calmly interrupts. “We have seen it. Come. We will take you to the Grand Speakers.”

Without so much as an introduction, even. The rest of you look to each other curiously, but, finding no reason to disobey, follow. Where she leads you is through an odd thicket, a twisting and turning large oak forest, and soon...a large cavern. “Our true home is hereabouts. Be cautious of where you stand.” Already inside you can see small fires. “We welcome you to our land.”

It’s...basic. Definitely. More rocks and carved buildings than anything else you can see as you walk though, at least. Fires for cooking meat. Very few children, however, and no kind of trade area you can see. You kind of feel like you have a couple of questions…

“Sooo…” you venture, getting a few looks from your allies, “I noticed there aren’t many children around here. Why’s that?” Not seemingly important, but the fact that there’s few children here- and most of them seemingly on the older end of that, no less- means there’s something unusual at play here...

“Sequestered elsewhere,” is the simple response. “Our progeny are the future made manifest; we take every care to safeguard them as thoroughly as possible.” Or they could just be weird. Either or. But you doubt you’re learning more than that for this inquiry. “Next statement,” she asks, as though she’s fully aware you have more.

Well, no reason to not oblige her. “Well, the Blackweb have some interesting thought about you...they think-”

“That we are weak and have no drive. That our talents regarding the future cause us to miss what happens in the present.” Her voice takes on a slightly more mocking edge; the obvious sign of holding in frustration with her ‘kin’. “This is what blinded them to understanding the Veil in the first place. They grew frustrated with their simplistic attempts to decipher the truth, and in their arrogance and frustration, simply laid their own interpretations upon what the Ancients tried to show us, in order to justify their own greed.”

You have to admit, that sounds...not entirely impossible. "I'm actually interested in your clan's philosophy, in that case. I know that the Blackweb clan places individual glory first, and promotes improving their social standing through sabotaging others, but what I've learned about your clan has been sparse and, well, tinted through a Blackweb perspective." As you walk, you’re noticing something else pop up- rabbits. Rabbits, talking with the spiders there, resting, or otherwise trying to make themselves useful. A number turn your way to look at the unusual procession, many wearing looks of shock, hope, or just plain bewilderment.

“She raises a point,” Izumi chimes in. “Our understanding of you has hardly been free of bias.”

“As is common,” she acknowledges. “But let it be known- we must live in the present quite vividly. Because if we lose ourselves in attempting to see the future before it is made real, that future will be lost to dreams.”

(cont.)
>>
>>3268721

“So you don’t rely on your foresight for everything, then?” Braun grunts. “Good.”

“No future is immutable,” she responds, turning down a corridor; off on the other end you can barely see a light shining through leading to another room you can’t make out, but someone is talking to someone else, though taking but a moment to turn to you and wave. Strange...but that’s a lot of pink.

“We perceive the Veil much like a one perceives a fish swimming down a river. We see several possibilities, some more likely than others- but the further down we would try to look, the harder it is to perceive. Ah, here we are.” They stop near a stone door, chiseled with what’s some sort of emblem that reminds you of a spider in front of a sun... or maybe that’s a bunch of web strands coming from under it- whatever. “Enter. The Sisters are expecting you.”

As the door opens, you’re greeted by a large, circular room- at your estimate at least sixty feet in diameter. There’s a massive ritual circle engraved in the ground as well, with specific symbols carved at even points all the way around. But that’s not what’s important.

What is is the two VERY LARGE Weavers standing on the far end. Dressed similarly to your nameless guide, aside from both of them sporting different coloration; one is a slate grey, the other a smokey purplish-black. They also both have golden and silver circlets as well; the grey one has a green gemstone embedded in the center, while the purple one has one of yellow.

The Prince is the first to bow. “My thanks for your hospitality, Sisters. I am Prince Fallon Emeral, of the Royal House of Emeral, and leader of the Great Alliance.”

“We are aware,” the grey one says as they bend at the knee a bit in a curtsey. “I am Speaker Ysabel.”

“I am Speaker Halibel. And you seek audience with us for membership in your alliance.” The purple one’s face is neutral as she speaks, but you notice the Prince’s lips purse a bit.

Still, it only shows for a moment. “I do indeed. I believe your skills in foresight will be a great aid to us in freeing our lands from this tyranny and sickness. Your yourself-”

“You need not serenade us with logic, Prince,” Ysabel forestalls. “We know well the risks should he not be stopped.”

At this, the Prince relaxes, if only minutely. “Then you will lend your aid?”

“Perhaps not,” Halibel replies, continuing on regardless of the Prince’s reaction. “As our assistance may not be as necessary or as useful as one may presume. The death of ours would be meaningless.”

(cont. 2)
>>
>>3268723
“I- what? How would you come to such a conclusion?” Prince asks; you can tell he’s thrown off, as is Braun. Si-Han at least remains neutral, more intent on eying the room than anything else for whatever reason.

At this question, the two of them begin walking forward- and you’d have to be blind to not notice that eye-hiding cloth or not, head turned towards the Prince or not, they’re walking straight towards yourself and Izumi. “The river is muddled more than ever now. Torn asunder, in fact, and a new one takes its place. One which features your...guests most heavily.”

“One perhaps a touch straighter than before, yet still with branches and uncertainty.” Halibel speaks softly. “All due to these strange beings…” She leans forward, as does her sibling. You’re not going to show any fear here, even as Ysabel leans in close to you as Halibel does the same to Izumi.

“Who ARE you, to invite such chaos in the veil? That you are so blurry and unfocused in my sight, and only slowly becoming clearer, little by little?”

I wonder if those allies that are still suspicious of Miranda think of her as some being that is only interested in this conflict to grow stronger by copying and taking strengths of their people? “Well.” Right, straight face, think of something… “Perhaps because my- our presence here is ephemeral; you can’t see a future involving us because we only exist here for now.” You’re not even sure if that makes sense to YOU, but it sounds good enough on first blush, you think.

Fortunately, Izumi’s quick to back you up. “Our presence is fleeting- our start and end is not here, rather more we are like...fisher birds near the stream.” Oh, that was good. “We follow it, perhaps help influence events in the stream, but are not OF it.”

There’s a bit of silence as they parse that information. The duo lean back, looking at each other briefly, before retreating a few clicking steps. “Tell us, then, oh Prince. Is this something you were aware of?”

“Not in the slightest,” he says simply. “They were merely hired help.”

“Mmm…” If they think he’s lying, they don’t show it. It’s Halibel who speaks first again. “We must consider this.”

“Indeed. Our clan is precious to us, as are the skills we teach. We are no fodder for the butcher.” Ysabel states. “Should we agree to this, there shall be conditions.”

“...Understandable,” he allows.

“You would deliberate and dally, knowing what you do?” Braun asks, disgruntled.

“Our peoples are not warriors, Oakcrusher.” The epithet causes his eyes to widen briefly, but he says nothing apart from a growl. “We are seers, strategists, defenders if necessary. We have little killing instinct- such was weaned out of our minds long ago. Some can fight, but such peoples are not the average in our society. All the more precious for it.”

“We would not ask much of you in regards to a tithe of warriors,” the Prince insists. “Merely that you aid us however you can on the march.”

“As stated, we will deliberate. Our young one will show you to rest areas- we have many.” Ysabel’s tone brooks no more argument for now, and even Prince seems to recognize such. “You may wander the colony, but be mindful. We shall bring you when a decision has been reached. That said…” all of you perk up as she and Halibel turn to you and Izumi. “Should either of you wish to speak to us, Veilblind...we would be interested in sating your curiosity.”

“So that you may sate ours, of course,” Halibel finishes.

“Understood,” Izumi allows, and you both bow, despite the Prince giving you an odd look.

Soon, you’re escorted out of the room. “Quite the interest they have in you,” Si-Han notes wryly.

“I’m not sure what they might want to know from you, but you may just be the factor that convinces them,” Prince says wonderingly. “Perhaps you can try to make time to talk to them later.”

Hm. Yeah, you were thinking similar.

Soon, you’re brought to a circular hall with a MASSIVE number of open holes- all of them leading to rather basic rooms, with straw rolls and little amenities, but rooms nonetheless. “We are fortunate to have access to an underground lake for washing; it is at the end of the hall on the far end-” here she points to said hall, “-so please make yourselves comfortable.”

“It’s lucky we’ve our own supplies,” one of the soldiers says dryly. She either doesn’t notice or just chooses to not respond, instead bidding you a good evening. Carrang and her contingent of guards quickly choose one far from either exit. She’s been just looking around with a weird expression on her face; odd for what she’s supposed to be...right?

“Whoa...that was kinda freaky,” Frederique says a bit timidly. “Uh...any of you guys mind keeping me company? I saw some folks I might’ve knew, and I, uh...yeah.”

Let's all go exploring! See how many veilspinners we can creep out by not having a future or a past.

Also, it occurs to me that they're kind of bad at reading the future. I don't mean that they're inaccurate, but if they've reached the point where they can't fight . . . Well they said it themselves, it gets harder to see the possibilities. If they're used to simply picking the best path, that could lead them into a trap where suddenly they end up with no good options left because they atrophied the skills that would let them survive or act to change the flow of the "stream".

It's not enough to simply see the futures and pick, one has to be prepared to act to create better futures. Sometimes you just gotta refuse to accept the probable outcome and bleed to make the million to one chance happen.

To quote Terry Pratchett's "Dark Side of the Sun", even the greatest odds and most complex probabilities can be reduced to a single statement - a thing will either happen, or it will not. That goes both ways, not only is there always the chance that things will go horribly wrong, but there's also always the chance that things will go surprisingly well. For instance, our presence here on their side of the war.

We don't have a stake in this fight, we're here because we're getting paid. And because of that, we're on their side as long as they're also on our Employers side until the completion of the contract. But what if we had been summoned by the Shadow Nation instead? Oh sure, everyone here seems nice enough, but the Shadows probably have their own justifications for the war. It's not like there's only one side doing the dying either. Maybe we personally wouldn't have taken a contract from them, but we're far from the only ones of our kind.

I don't see Miranda being that flowery about it, but I can see her pointing out that her very presence is proof that no future is ever a hundred percent certain until you experience it, and the Veilspinners should know that being unable to fight is very different from having the choice to fight or not. Being able to see your end coming is useless if you don't have the ability to change it. Maybe then fighting would be meaningless for the outcome of the future now, but relearning how to do so as a people would give them more options later when something "changes the flow" badly for them. They don't have to fight for us, they have to fight for themselves.

I think we should try and convince at least a few Veilspinners that they should take the risk even though there isn't a pressing need now, so that they can learn how and be prepared for when it's needed.
>>
>>3269709
All this was a long winded way of saying that what the Veilspinners are doing is touching the mathematical model of probability too much by avoiding conflict to the point that they're unable to fight. Being the best strategists in the world tactically doesn't count for anything if you're limited by your resources and ability to utilize them because in that situation their best strategy is to surrender.

Refusing to fight with us is worrying to much about how the stream is flowing, instead of where it's flowing to.

And while Miranda isn't a particularly introspective or intellectual character, she IS a 90 year old veteran of constant conflict as well as being a magical girl who lives outside of reality and has almost certainly interacted with oracles and fortune tellers etc who predict the future and definitely been mixed up in prophecies given the whole summoning aspect, so I don't think it's unreasonable for her to instinctively recognize that there's a point where getting to caught up in it results in it becoming detached from from reality.

I regret writing walls of text now that I've gotten the point out. I really didn't need to talk about all that other stuff and could have just gone with this.

While you are right that their hands-off approach to the events of the resent is flawed, there is no need to rouse so much trouble and taking their future hostage. That might result in them deciding to ignore the war, going full panic mode and initiating some failsafe plan that would preserve them from anything that our intervention might result in.

As for for "taking their future hostage", that's not what's happening. What it is, is the question "what were they going to do if the Alliance lost the war".

She said she was aware what would happen if the shadows weren't stopped, but then says that she isn't willing to risk her people to do so. She insists on putting conditions on aiding them he Alliance, while they fight and bleed and die to stop the shadows. Even then, I can't help but note that they didn't do anything at all until we arrived and "muddied the stream". I'm quite suspicious that the Veilspinners original plan was to withdraw based on seeing the Alliance win but at a very high cost, possibly not defeating the shadows but only driving it back and containing it but still having it be a constant threat - and drain on resources.

I imagine they would be quite content with that situation, allowing them to continue to prosper and prophesy in splendid isolation.

I actually find it rather humorous how the Seer spoke about living in the present and not relying on predictions of the future, and then immediately refused to act decisively because the "streams were still muddied". But at the same time, she must already know that they will have to cultivate a positive relationship with the alliance, after all why else would they have intervened with the rabbits during the siege?

But instead she continues to act condescending to the Prince, insisting on conditions for their support, refusing to actually fight because the death of their people would be "meaningless" when other people are fighting and dying as we are here trying to solicit their aid.

Honestly, not sure what her end game here is, but since it's looking like there's going to be a fairly stable and united Alliance instead of a devastated land of survivors struggling to rebuild and suppress the Shadows, I'm not sure that offending and imposing conditions while still refusing to fight is the best strategy. Especially since she just outright said that the shadows winning would doom them as well, but that they aren't going to aid the alliance without concessions because they're going to win anyways.

That's going to make for some real bad feelings when people come back from the war, but not all of them, and they Veilspinners are acting like they should be grateful to them for helping them at all to defend against the shadows, and then only after they decided the Alliance were more likely to win. Like. If it was less certain before, why didn't they fight from the beginning when things were MORE desperate?

Gonna be real easy, I think, to decide that since they fought and died while the Veilspinners took advantage of the threat to everyone to remain safe, that the Alliance nations are entitled to compensation. Probably quite a bit. And if the Alliance ends the war with most of its forces intact, and completely defeats the Shadows, then what are the Veilspinners going to do?
>>
>>3269790
If anything, anything at all, what we're threatening isn't the Veilspinners future. They're doing that to themselves.

What we threaten is their present.

Oh. And Carrang is probably sad because she just realized that this awesome and exciting new person with awe-some powers and exotic appearance, and MOTIVATION that gets things done who dommed her like never before is only here temporarily and is going to leave her.

Quite frankly, we appeal to her in every way to her deepest held desires.
>>
>>3269781
Oh, and as for the Veilspinners having a failsafe plan, they're pretty heavily invested into rituals for Foresight, and we no-sell their ability there. That's actually the main threat, our simple presence has altered the post-war balance of power.

So they probably won't do anything directly against us, and if they do they'll likely wait until the final push to break the Shadows since we'll leave after that.

Maybe they'll assassinate a bunch of the more diplomatic and level headed officers and nobles under the cover of battle, so that they can delay and make temporary appeasement while instigating dissent within the Alliance.

I doubt they have any sort of directly destructive magic that would be on a scale to balk a strong Alliance, they definitely don't have the military. Same issue with any sort of barrier ritual, it just delays the inevitable and gives the Alliance an opponent to unite them.

I think it would probably be too risky for them to give information to the Shadows, but they might panic and try to set us up to face the Trio or the Koelm dude and hope we get killed, since we're pretty much the Alliances counter to them.

I did note that The Trio just "shows up" to battles and whenever they do, they win the battle. The spider lady thought they were teleporting, but I suspect they simply have really good timing. Almost like they knew what was going to happen ahead of time.

Hmmm. Suspicious, no?

But yeah, since they can't predict what we might find out, aiding the enemy is too risky.

But if the Veilspinners are put into logistic and advisory roles in the military, they could plausibly orchestrate things to make it as difficult for us as possible, or to sabotage the Alliance in ways that wouldn't be suspicious until after the war. They could even deflect any criticism of it does occur by blaming us for disturbing their precognitive ability.

Actually the more I think about it, the more suspicious it seems. If the Veilspinners foresaw that the war could go either way, why not provide aid earlier to help mitigate the damage and tip the balance in favour of the Alliance? Even more so if they saw that it was probable that the Shadows would win, since then they'd be just as screwed as everyone else. Or else joined the Shadows, if it really looked like the Alliance was at a clear disadvantage. Now that the Alliance is suddenly with a clear advantage, why are they offering only the most limited aid reluctantly instead of taking the opportunity to make a place for themselves within it? That's inconsistent with them sending the Rabbits.

Things aren't adding up with these Veilspinners here. We should keep in mind that they aren't allies yet and they weren't doing anything at all to help the Alliance before, not even providing information about their predictions nor advice on how to proceed. That would only make sense if they were confident the Alliance would win, but that they didn't want them have too much success
>>
So, who do you think was talking to the sisters up in >>3255502? From what I can gather, they seem to be some sort of engineer. Extrapolating from that, the rabbitkin were the only beings we know of so far that can create such things, so it stands to reason that they’re one as well.

The end game of the veilspeakers is quite simple: they want to survive and have a future. That's why they didn't want to get into the fight because until we arrived they knew that winning was almost impossible, therefore joining the alliance is a futile act, and they were right. They know they are poor fighters, have little to offer other than revealing the future and if they are captured by the enemy the alliance or whoever survives and manages to make a rebellion is totally and completely fucked because the enemy could manage to squash the rebels before they even knew they were rebels.
Now that they know that there is a chance of winning, the veilspeakers are more eager to fight and even die for the cause, but they are still undecided because they don't know what will happen when we leave.

Well, there’s a few things you could do, but you’re not really interested in going out and about amongst the spiders right now. You’ve got a few things to think over before that happens. In the meantime, though…

You look over to Carrang’s ‘cell’. She seems, yet again, oddly content and quiet, rather simply basking in the environment than anything else; a bit odd, considering how loud she was beforehand. You’ve got your suspicions (that you refuse to vocalize) as to what prompted the change of attitude, but it’s still odd.

“You approach so casually…” she notes as you walk up to her; her guards don’t move to stop you, probably considering you can deal with anything she does anyway. “I’m really not used to that,” she admit with a small smile. “Whaddya want?”

...That’s a good question, actually.

I still want to test the restoration powers of the gauntlet some time. I'm pretty sure we could restore Carrang's mind, but i doubt Miranda would even care about this random elf even if having her mind healed would benefit us.

Probably should ask thr Veilswhispers sisters if it's even possible to do so i mean they do have the skill to look into the future.

Or maybe there is no benefit and i should stop hitting that note every time.

I don't mind testing them out, but she's a poor choice for a test for multiple reasons. If we come across a broken sword or shack or something, I'd be for it, but not the dark elf. There's no point in after the Veils when we can easily test it ourselves.

“You seem pretty taken by this place,” you note. “Why is that?”

She just laughs lightly. “Was it obvious? I mean, look at it! It’s dark, cozy...kinda reminds me of home, really. Not to mention, they all move with such purpose. Have you noticed?” Not really, actually. “Their movements are certain. They don’t move without a reason. The few that show their eyes don’t stray. It’s all so...exact.” She looks dreamy at this, and you’re not certain if you should keep entertaining this line of thought…

“I guess I get it,” you interject. “I suppose I’m just wondering why Prince brought you along. Doesn’t seem like there’s much of a reason here. You weren’t told anything, were you?”

“Well…” she flicks her eyes to the left a moment, thinking. “...nope! Not a clue! Might just be because he wanted it to look like us Shaded were split and helping, but they know how to view the future, right? They’d know if he was lying an’ all.” Hm. Very true, but that doesn’t seem to really be considered a good reason. Maybe he simply didn’t trust anyone but him and his best to watch her?

Suddenly, a hurried, yet strong voice clips through the dark; a female’s, and sounding very much imperious. “One side, one side! Move! Chief Engineer and Lady of the House coming through!” Hm. Wonder what that was all about.

“We’ll continue this later,” you decide- she merely nods in understanding before you head out- although you can hear footsteps try to follow you, the guards stop her.

Getting back to the main area, you’re surprised to see a number of rabbits having found their way inside- at least a dozen. And at the head of them is one in particular; a white and black spotted sort, she wears a pair of bifocals despite her young looks, a worker’s vest and canvas-ish pants, ordained with colored stripes, and a small engineer’s cap. On the bifocals, you can see on one end is a magnifying lens tilted out of the way. She carries around her waist a belt of tools- construction, you think, and wields a long staff with her- actually, no, that’s a...a massive ruler, actually. Folded in, no less, and it’s at least a head and a half taller than her already. “Begging pardon for the interruption, but I absolutely MUST speak to the head of this procession!” she urges immediately, looking around.

“That would be myself,” the Prince announces evenly. “I am Prince Fallon Emeral, of the Royal House of Emeral, and leader of the Great Alliance. And whom do I have the honor of speaking to?”

“Lady Odyssia Lux, Chief Engineer of the Council, and Lady of the House Lux, daughter to Thorumin Lux, sister to Benediel Lux, rightful head of the Council,” she announces broadly. “And I understand you have met with the Speakers of the Veilspeakers, correct?”

“That we have, although they have chosen to deliberate,” he admits.

“Then I may be of some assistance in convincing them to move on this subject,” she claims. “Provided I can speak on your behalf.”

There’s a moment where he considers the thought before he sighs. “I’m not so certain that is permissible, admittedly. They have indicated they are not to be disturbed- save by two under my command for the moment; the warriors Yvrace and Hylinde. The former is the figure there-” here he points to you, “-and the latter is on walkabout with another of your kin who found us- Frederique, should his name spark memory.”

“It does,” she confirms, “and we will have words later. However, if I may, then?” And here she turns to you- and jumps briefly. “I- oh! You- ah.” She looks between yourself and the Prince, who remains nonplussed. “I, er, was not aware that…”

“She is, ostensibly, no creature of shadow,” the Prince reassures her. “She is bound by forces you need not worry about, and has shown no inclination towards duplicity regardless. I trust her as well as Hylinde, as things stand.”

“Mm…” Odyssia frowns a bit, but nods. “Very well. I trust your judgement. Now then…” And finally, she approaches you- if a bit less quickly than she did the prince. “She opens her doors for you, correct? Perhaps I might be allowed to be present during that time, then, with your permission?”

Hm. Well, she seems awfully full of herself...at least, at first glance. The way she’s looking intently at you, though, not even blinking...and the subtle lean forward? That’s not how someone who’s arrogant and dismissive with their title and power acts. That’s someone who’s eager- possibly desperate- and trying to hide it. Still, that doesn’t change facts. “Don’t know. That seems like it may insult them, considering their invitation was exclusive…”

She flinches like she’d been slapped, a mild grimace on her face that she quickly schools into a more neutral expression. “Perhaps, but I have been allowed in before- I don’t believe they’ll take much offensive, especially considering what I have to say.”

You purse your lips into a thin line. No, yeah, she’s desperate for whatever reason. “I have to admit, I dunno. You say that, but they didn’t so much as mention your person. Is there anything else you have to your name besides your title that might convince them?”

A number of emotions flash through her face almost immediately- confusion, rage, blatant desperation, and finally settling on, curiously, a dim resignation as she seems to deflate, closing her eyes and letting off a soft sigh. “I see...very well. Forgive my impertinence.” She dips into a small bow. “I’ve been rather...frustrated at the moment due to recent events; I have clearly let my emotions supercede my judgement. My- my apologies for the rather rude and baseless interruption of duties.” She works her mouth as though she’s uncertain of what to say, blinking heavily before shaking her head. “I was- merely hoping to impress upon her the possibility of the Council’s ill motivations, and that we might be able to combat their future a bit more actively. They claim that the don’t seek to rely on their visions overmuch, but they’re not willing to fight for such- they plot and scheme and string their plans to adjust their future, but they’re not willing to BLEED for it. I...simply feel that- that is in error. Granted, I know little of the horrors first hand, but- ah.” She huffs, rolling her eyes. “I’m rambling. A clear sign of mental disrepair. A thousand pardons to you- you as well, Prince.” She bows again, this time far deeper. “I’ll not trouble you anymore. Good eve.” With a nod goodbye, she turns to leave.

There’s little word as she walks away- her followers look to each other in clear concern, but none of them stop her as she walks past, merely choosing to follow in silence as they filter out of the room one by one.

“Shame, that.” The Prince remarks once they’re gone. “Some sorts simply grasp for whatever reasoning they can when their world’s been upended, regardless of the rationality.” You can agree with that. Girl looked as though she was grasping at anything she could. You’re not here to coddle or make anyone feel better, though.

“Did I miss anything important?” Carrang asks when you get back her way again.

“Not really,” you admit.

The night passes fairly easily; Carrang had little else to say in matter of possible troop movements; but that fact was joined by another- that apparently further inland, the troops had been getting lazy and far less… ‘thoughtful’ was how she put it, simply due to the fact that the war had been considered largely won by then. They weren’t patrolling as much, she’d heard bits and pieces about deserters or otherwise individuals who sought to make their own fiefdoms out of the areas they were awarded (paying fealty to Lord Kolm, of course), but otherwise, it spoke of disorganization beyond Dartmouth.

Actually poking them and starting a fight might work, if it's actually serious then we could split off the useful Veilspinners and leave the crap ones behind.

We aren't going to turn down help, after all.

And since they'll be working with us, we can discuss our plans and such with them and they can "predict" the future bu using their brains and thinking about it instead of using magic as a crutch so they don't have to think too hard or risk too much.

“This is good,” the Prince admits as he mulls this over. “Although we’re unfortunately not in a position to immediately move, that knowledge means that we can make a series of quick strikes for now to re-establish a good foothold in the lands. We’ve already managed to largely liberate the areas closest, and freed up allies to assist us; if Dartmouth can be brought under control as well, I daresay we’ll have an honest shot- if we want to be daring, we could theoretically circumvent to the northeast, break through the mountains, and have a direct shot towards Lord Kolm’s lands, causing him to refocus his efforts inwards...although risky, I wonder if perhaps we could mobilize enough of a rapid moving force- I don’t believe he’d have so many mortal forces so as he could simply have a dearth of them so easily for defense. ”

“Why bother?” Braun asks bluntly- he looks at you in response to the questioning looks, Izumi having volunteered to walk with Frederique around the colony. “Your two special warriors can cleave shadow like wheat from the fields. I have seen it first hand.” He leans forward on his massive weapon, grunting with a nod at his own assurance. “Send them both into Lord Kolm’s lands, let them unleash their strength in full and without caution. He will panic and move in haste to defend his lands, and we will be able to proceed apace nearly unopposed.”

“They are mighty, yes, but invincible, clearly not,” Si-Han says harshly. “It would not be wise to throw away what has gotten us thus far on a gamble. No, no. We should stay the course. Bring what he will to bear- we shall crush it now that our feet are set.”

Hmph. Talking like you aren’t even here. Well, considering the subject matter, you feel like you can weigh in on this…

> “I have to agree with Si-Han. We’re damn strong, and damn powerful, but it leaves you at risk if something were to happen to us. Best thing to do is to keep as we are and build up our land and manpower gradually and steadily.”

> “Braun isn’t wrong; if we move quick enough, we could probably flatten a lot of his major holdings before he realizes that this isn’t just a last gasp of a dying empire. You’d have to not worry about collateral damage, though…”

Thinking about it, you shake your head. “I have to agree with Si-Han. We’re damn strong, and damn powerful in other ways, but it leaves you at risk if something were to happen to us. Best thing to do is to keep as we are and build up our land and manpower gradually and steadily.” Thought you won’t deny the idea is tempting, that’s a lot more risk than what you’re doing now.

Fortunately, the Prince seems to acknowledge that fact, a sigh and a nod being the only thing about his expression. “Fair enough, and it DOES make a deal of sense. I suppose I’m riding a bit high at the moment- currently diplomatic issues aside.” Braun just grunts, clearly disapproving, but not enough to make a fuss about it.

Si-Han seems pleased, at least. “Understandable. But be cautious. The taste of victory turns to ashes if one becomes too gluttonous.” Smart words.

With little else to say, everyone decides to retire for the night shortly afterwards- Izumi returns with Frederique not long afterwards, looking a bit pensive. She seems to notice your gaze, however.

“Problems?” you ask, just about to head into your cove.

She shakes her head. “Nothing that a bit of thought won’t solve. Frederique was merely enthusiastic about seeing his kind again. A rather insightful boy, really.”

That’s not as surprising as you might’ve figured at first blush. “Makes sense. We had one of theirs show up, too. Asked me to let them tag along if we went to talk to the sisters, buuuut they didn’t have much to add to the idea, so I said no.”

“Fair enough,” she admits. Beyond that, you wish each other good night, and head to bed.

Your sleep is dreamless, fortunately. But something rouses you- almost immediately your instincts take over, snapping a hand wreathed in energy towards the target, who merely stands idly there.

It’s that one Veilspeaker, turns out- your guide from the other day. “The Great Speakers wish for you to take your morning meal with them early. Do you accept?”

You blink, the adrenaline lowering into something more manageable. “Wait-”

“The other Veilblind is also invited. Merely the two of you. The Human Prince, and both the Bear and Lizardfolk still sleep. The Sisters will extend a proper acknowledgement and invitation to the Alliance leaders in due time.” Huh. Weird.

No. Not until we have reasonably solid assurance of them allying with us, in the form of committing a significant amount to the war in order to guarantee that they can't switch sides

Otherwise while they're just potential allies, they're also a potential threat, and indirect attacks are honestly our biggest problem.

I would rather keep the Prince safe and avoid the human king to go crazy. You know like that other king from lord of the rings. The one who burned himself with his son's corpse.

No the Prince is the single heir and his dad as we recall is already old and probably will die during the time of this campaing from old age.

>>3272516
Only if the next king reconize the documents as valid. You know in case the old king dies and the prince dies there isn't a obvious royal sucessor.
>>
>>3272584
I don't think it matters if he has another heir. The king has a obvious like for this Prince. It was obvious from the way he looked at his son. So having his son die will probably be to much for the old man, who can end up dying faster if he finds out his favorite, and possibly only son. Died

Hm...well, this might be an opportunity to really dig into their heads, you suppose. Especially if they’re so ‘blind’ to what you might do. It’s an advantage you can’t say you weren’t glad for. “Alright. I’ll come along. Where’s Hylinde?”

“She claimed that her agreement was dependant on your own. Come; we will collect her, get you ready, and be on our way shortly.” She seems rather pleased that you agreed- that’s normally obvious, but she seems somewhere close to outright giddy.

Nonetheless, you’re allowed to clean up a bit (and in private, thank goodness, although the wings vanishing and ‘feeling’ reattached was weird) and soon brought to the chamber yet again- there is a large wooden table set up near the back, however, which has a myriad of different foods laden on it- meats of hunted animals, greens, and fruits alike. At each end of the table are Ysabel and Halibel. It’s Ysabel who speaks first. “Welcome, Veilblind. We are pleased you agreed to our request.”

“Quite pleased,” Halibel adds. “And forgive our excess- we were uncertain of your diet, and so elected to have a variety of choice to offer. All uneaten shall be distributed to needful individuals later on.”

“But come, take part,” Ysabel insists. The two of you sit in the chairs proffered- and to your surprise, the Veilweaver takes a slab of roasted meat from the table with no word from either sister, before bowing, and taking a sentinel position in a high corner of the room.

There’s a minute or two filled with simply the sound of chewing, before Ysabel finally speaks. “Tell me, Veilblind- or perhaps Yvrace, was it? You quite intrigue us.”

“We resist looking in the Veil for every purpose, true, but it is voluntary!” Ysabel says, looking excited, of all things. “To be so unsure and have no way of understanding is rather...well, in truth, I know not how to express my feelings. My blood quickens, my breath shortens!”

“It is fascinating, truly.” Halibel admits. “However, we did not invite you here to extol your own virtues. We are curious as to your designs on this war. We know not your intentions during the war, merely that you perhaps will not see what comes of your actions after the fact.”

“Well, I should mention, at the least, that we believe in the cause,” Izumi says. “No land should suffer under such a tyrant. However, we, ah, ARE being compensated for our time and effort…” That last bit is said much less boldly, although they seem to not react much to it.

“You are mercenary; this much we can glean from you. In attitude if nothing else.” Ysabel says, having calmed down. “However, do you truly believe you two alone can turn the tide of such a lopsided war?”

The two of you look to each other before turning back to Ysabel. “Turn the tide? Absolutely. We’ve done it before, we’re doing it now, and we’ll probably do it in the future in some fashion.”

“But alone?” Izumi picks up on. “Absolutely not. The fact is, we very often need some sort of support.”

You decide to take back up the thread of conversation, considering the surprised look on their faces. “Local resources, y’know? They can do things or often have talents that we can’t quite do or replicate to the same degree. Sometimes the things they can do or gain access to, we can’t ever access ourselves. In this case, we’ve got a LOT of help- and we still need more. It’s why we’re here, after all.”

“It’s a simple matter of fact that helping us helps you as well,” Izumi continues. “If only due to public relations.”

“And by that, you mean…?” Halibel ventures.

“You know full well the Blackweb are working with Lord Kolm. Think about what might happen once the war is over? After a war, people generally don’t even want to risk getting into another one, and fear mongering is something that happens when a big conflict like this happens, be it on a large or small scale.” You lean forward, as Izumi nods quickly, supporting your train of thought. “Me and my companion can attest to you that, well, if the Veilspeakers don't help during this time of need with as much as they can, other races might start to consider you little different than the Blackweb due to simple guilt by inaction. ‘They just waited until we were freed and then picked up the spoils’, and such.” It makes enough sense, and although you’ve never SEEN it yourself in missions, you’ve heard such here and there, and the logic makes sense enough. Izumi’s looking grave, though, like she’s had personal experience.

There’s silence as the two process your words, seemingly stunned by the totality of them briefly. You’re largely willing to wait. The roast off to your right looked well-cooked…

After a few moments of silence musing and wordless communication between the sisters, Ysabel finally speaks up. “How intriguing…I am so very interested in the consequences!”

“It unnerves me- reeks of senseless danger.” Halibel says, apropo of nothing. “And yet, this entire situation is most unnerving in principle.”

“And yet there is an air of truth about them,” Ysabel says to her sibling. “An energy that cannot be denied.”

“That energy being gained through much bloodshed, no doubt. The point they make is a good one, but do you think we will make it through such issues unscathed? Even if we were to not send our warriors?”

“I have absolutely no idea!” Ysabel squeals. “Fascinating, is it not?”

“No,” she says flatly. “It is why I asked you.”

It amazes me how much better we're doing for them by looking BACKWARDS, than they are looking a bit ahead. I bet that if they studied history at all they wouldn't be having these problems. I suppose that's the issue with the people who run the group seeing the future, they get lost in it.

Love what's happening so far. And yes you can quote me on my late night pain med rambling here.

We were literally just told they use their foresight to manipulate event, by one of their own people.

Meanwhile the Weaver revel in direct combat, using body strengthening rituals.

I guess i missed that part. Oh well, not like it won't be better for then if they join us.
>>
>>3272752
We should offer to protect them in combat by agreeing to work with them.

For money.

They can pay us based on how many survive.

And we really like money.

They'll basically get a training wheel war with us around to learn how it's done. Then they don't have to do it again unless necessary, so long as they don't how again.
>>

Are you sure you are not the guy? >>3272168
>>
>>3273107
Nah. I'm not saying we should stick around to train them or anything.

Just that this way we can get their help directly, get paid, and seal this deal.

I think it's also worth a surcharge from the Ptince for negotiations if they're successful. Look how considerate we are, preventing future problems! Fuck you pay me.
>>
>>3273099
We might could get paid as a teacher, but we can't contribute to the prince's objectives if we're stuck babysitting the spiders.

We'd be using them as much as protecting them.

“Well, if I might interject?” you venture? Fortunately, neither of them says anything to oppose, so you continue. “From what I’ve seen of the Blackweb, they’re very much not keen on sharing. Anything.”

“Quite true...” Halibel confirms. “You think they would extend that greed to our lives.” She’s stating, not asking. “I would agree, were the situation the same without your presence.”

“And let’s say things regress after we leave? Say, someone else steps up and causes this whole thing- or at least similar- to happen again? I won’t deny that it might or might not be a possibility, and we wouldn’t likely be back for a second round. What then? You’d just perish because your saviors aren’t here?” You hadn’t meant it to sound as biting as it did, but something about them… “We’re not asking for your frontline, not necessarily. But your help in logistics, medical work, keeping to your scrying for future battles, even. It might not be what you’re used to, but it’s still bending the situation to the outcome you want.”

“And Ysabel,” Izumi interjects, “I do not anticipate such a risky situation in our current situation either. We will be working to mitigate the worst of possibilities- if you see time and its actions as a river, then we shall divert the stream to what we would largely desire. Surly you’ve understood that that is possible?” At that, Ysabel seems to still a bit, thinking over your words, as does Halibel.

“...You speak well,” the latter says quietly. “Warriors, orators, and more, it seems. Your visages belie a great deal of experience in the matter, no doubt.”

You both just nod. Nothing much to say to that.

“...You should finish your meal. We believe we have made a decision?” Ysabel aims the latter question towards Halibel, who merely sighs and nods.

“Norima, come down. We will have much to discuss soon,” Ysabel says lightly.

“Yes, mother,” the guardian responses as she joins you at the table.

The remainder of the meal passes in silence.

The Prince isn’t surprised overmuch when he walks into the meeting room and sees you both standing off to the side, just behind the Sisters.

“We have decided to agree to join your Alliance,” Halibel says without preamble, and you can see all others in the room brighten at the news. “However, there will be conditions.”

“And those would be?” Prince asks easily.

“One: Use our warriors sparingly. We will send a number along with a contingent of Whisperers; the young and the eager in the ways of the Veil. They will help you interpret best what the Veil shows.” Halibel seems particular about this condition.

Fortunately, the Prince sees so as well. “Done.”

“Second condition!” Ysabel says hungrily. “You will keep a record of all actions requested of ours. We will request these records periodically.”

“We try to do that anyway,” the Prince confirms. “It’ll be no problem.”

Halibel nods. “Good. And third condition...destroy the Blackweb.”

THAT gets a look from the gathered. “Beg pardon?”

“In a sense,” Halibel elaborates. “see to it that the Blackweb can no longer function as a unified Weaver clan. Whether that be destroying them utterly or otherwise.”

“We have long been at odds with them.” Ysabel explains. “We have decided that this is the best opportunity to rid ourselves of a problem we previously thought ourselves doomed to suffer. While the total destruction of every clan member may not be feasible...”

“To reduce them to ‘Blackweb’ in name only would be a great boon to us- and you as well, on many accounts,” Ysabel says. “As we may be willing to offer more of ourselves for the humans, and indeed the Alliance as a whole in the future should this come to pass.”

There’s a brief pause, and you glance to your left to see Izumi looking rather...conflicted, you think would be the best term for it. She clearly wants to say something, but isn’t sure she should. But… she wouldn’t ACTUALLY try to dissuade him, would she?

The thought barely gets through your head before you see her motioning to speak.

>No, you trust her enough. If she’s going to say something, let her.
>Damnit, you can’t risk it, not now. Just stop her and you’ll talk it out later.

She's going to speak against it, clearly, but it's not vital to securing their support. Plus, we can do our best to fulfill the request anyways; Blackweb's way of thinking means they can never be fully trusted.

Once Izumi's finished pleading her case, add in

>I've actually been thinking... We've recently been in contact with a member of the Blackweb who we think might be a more pliable leader... She'd need us to take down three of her rivals, preferably humiliating them, before she could challenge Mistress Zia, but if we could get "proof" that your tribe was the one responsible for bringing her to power, that would help keep her in line to prevent her from losing her newfound power...
>>
>>3281739
>No, you trust her enough. If she’s going to say something, let her.

I mean she said we need to defeat the blackweb. That just means we need to kill the heads on the top and leave small numbers of then. Or simply let the Blackweb split in various other minor clans.

She also saw how the blackweb works. They are too greedy to keep living and would likely try to have another war if they keep united.
>>
>>3281823
Make the blackweb into a puppet state? That...could work. But the sisters are asking for the blackwebs to be annihaled. Which means either no leader unifying then or having the tribe be in a internal war
>>
Besides not wanting to sound racist. But i have the felling that Izumi knows about clan politics and etc..so she should have a better idea rather then killing every last one of the Blackweb clan.
>>
>>3281739
No. You know her beliefs, and you know her habits, and though she might disapprove, she wouldn’t cause a massive issue about it...you think. Although if this is a deal-breaker, then you’ll have to just work harder without them.

“If I may speak?” Izumi says, glancing to you as though she guessed you’d want to interfere- you just stay silent, though, and you can see her mouth twitch upwards in a minute smile before she continues, no one having opposed. “I don’t think such an thorough elimination would be feasible- HOWEVER, perhaps if were to subvert them somehow- if not convince them to give up their ways, then perhaps direct their attentions towards the less savory?” She's actually grinning; like she knows something they don't- which is likely entirely accurate.

“Unlikely,” Halibel says quickly. “I’d rather not waste the time…”

“But who knows at this point?” Ysabel says airly, earning her a look from her sister. “Perhaps it may work. It’d be rather amusing, I think.”

“And you would- yes, you would,” Halibel groans. “You’ve gotten so enamored with the idea of the unknown as of late. I fear for you, sister. But at the moment, very well. We’ll allow a secondary possibility. As long as the Blackweb cannot continue as a whole in time.”

“Then...I think we can agree to that,” the Prince allows, and he, as well as the other leaders, bow. “In that case, we welcome you to the Great Alliance.”

The Sisters curtsey as well. “We shall see you well,” they intone in unison.

Finally.

...you were never the biggest fan of spiders. Even after all these years.

------------------

Things move quickly after that- on Carrang’s word, the Prince and the Sisters are fast to mobilize their new recruits, and by midday, there’s approximately three dozen Warrior Veilspeakers, along with a dozen Whisperers, and four of what they called ‘Watchers in the Dark’, one of which was one you explicitly recognized at the Veilspeaker Norima.

Maybe of the younger spiderlings watch you with curiosity alongside their Rabbitkin friends; some braver ones (but not too brave, clearly) even asking to help pack or offering small goods like foodstuffs and fresh-spun silk (taken reverently, but with a strongly repressed grimace).

Before long, your newly increased force had set out.

Along the way, you had…

Why do i habe the feelling that spider silk can make some pretty cool clothes. Maybe even turn us into a spider-taur if we turn it into leggings or a skirt.

>Maybe even turn us into a spider-taur if we turn it into leggings or a skirt.
I think that depends on the shape of the clothing and the extra assets it has more than the materials that is made of.
>>
>>3281946
I imagine the driders are tired of that stereotype. They can have other hobbies and skills, and weaving is hard. (hopefully they have better luck with it than poor Lyra did with it.

PC of RE:Monster Ex Quest, now sadly abandoned. She was a drider, but we consistently got miserable roles every time we tried to weave anything. We literally wove our hands together at least once, and had to get help getting them free, despite having litteral knives for fingers.

...looked to get a few questions answered. Norima seemed far more personable than you’d expected, quickly approaching a number of the soldiers and integrating herself with them as best she could. The human soldiery in particular she built a rapport with rather fast, particularly the rangers and scouts after a brief showcase of knife tossing skill. All during the march, it seemed as though she had a tough time marching placidly, skittering from the front to the back, her bald, lavender coloration flashing through the ranks until it was strongly suggested she stop from Si-Han. She’d fallen into step besides you and Izumi, just ahead of the rest of the Weavers, and you figured this was the best time to speak up.

Sooo... am I the only one who doesn't get what was she thinking about?
>>
>>3282110
Probably about our plan to put Zazil as the head honcho of the spiders.

Remember when we asked Zazil what it would take to put her as the leader? Well if she is the only one of the leaders that are still alive and we make her sing a deal thay she will change her ways. Or otherwise we (or probably Izumi) will come back and kick her ass.

Considering that Zazil easily sold her alligance when she was near death i think it's safe to make her the head of whatever is lefed of the blackweb.
>>
>>3282120
It's just that Izumi was wuite cautious when we proposed that idea to Zatzil, but now she's acting smug about it, so I thought that something has went over my head, or maybe there were hidden event rolls for Izumi or something.
>>

>> “So, ‘Watchers in the Dark’? What’s that about?”
>>
>>3282313
Or maybe she is just grinning because she thinks that Miranda guessed that the Spiders or some other race would want to eradicate the Blackweb and that's why Miranda was making the proposition to get Zatzil as the head of the Blackweb.

Basicaly by accident we are trying to preserver as much lifes as we need by sparing someone who is cowardly and who has surrendered

Of course that is just what i think. I could be just conpletely wrong and she is thinking something else.
