”A Knight is Sworn to Valour. His Heart Knows Only Virtue. His Blade Defends the Helpless. His Might Upholds the Weak. His Word Speaks Only Truth. His Wrath Undoes the Wicked.”

Every child in Cantôn knows of the Knight’s Code. From peasant-born waifs playing with sticks in the mud to keen-eyed noble sons practicing with cold steel in the training yard, all have at the very least dreamed of one day becoming a knight themselves. To ride out on errantry into the Five Duchies Kingdom and beyond for God and Glory, bringing the Law of Adam to the wicked and the Blade of Cain to the beast.

The Knights of Cantôn are sworn to follow the Code, to obey the King, to refuse no call for aid honestly asked for, to seek out and destroy the Foe wherever it may lurk and rid the world of evil.

Were it so easy…

Wenegan, 16th Day of Savrimun, 883 A.C.E, Central Aubres, Present Day

>Spend 1 Wealth
>Fashionable Attire (1W)
>”Hah. Drinks on me!” Despite yourself, you’re starting to share Tracker Jean’s enthusiasm for the pitch-and-sale and all this other commerce hubbub you once thought beneath you. [Hearty]

You have 7 Wealth Remaining. Further purchases prior to your departure will require a write-in that gains traction during your stay.

------------------------------------------

”Hah. Drinks on me!” You declare boisterously, hefting the heavy coinpurse with a grin. You’ll be damned, this trade thing can be quite fun if one doesn’t take oneself too seriously.

”Careful, Cantônian!” Miss Jean teases, delighted you’re getting into the spirit of things. ”See if I don’t order myself the finest and most expensive drink they have on offer.”

”Psh, go right ahead Miss Jean.” You smirk, watching a wine merchant’s daytalers struggle under too many vases. You don’t imagine Miss Jean will offer refunds if they drop them. ”I imagine most of it will be of your bosses’ stock anyway.”

”Careful who you call my boss, knight. Fatman just fronts the cash, it’s his missus that’s the brains behind everything.” Tracker Jean waves farewell as you make your way to another section of the merchant quarter with your earnings. ”Don’t spend it all at once, I want that drink!”

[1/3]
>>
>>3258744

Remembering that you have a debt due at some point, you restrain yourself from spending everything at once. However, well aware that one simply cannot wear armour all the time in the Capital, you go out of your way to the Tailor Lane streets and see what the fashionable courtly folk are wearing these days.

”Of course, sire, of course! Jeeves here has taken your measurements and we shall have the cloth cut out and fashioned by tomorrow evening.” Mister Verdicci is a Cantôn Capital-man by birth, though he manages to work in his Langlish-Pascae heritage into the conversation within a few sentences of you setting foot in your door. ”Quite a lot of cloth for a customer of your stature, I should think! If you don’t mind me saying, sire. Here, this one I think. It matches your complexion perfectly, and compliments your impressive figure to no end.”

”That? You don’t think it’s too… well, much?” You ask, running the fabric through your hands.

It’s very colourful, and perhaps a bit tight-fighting on the mannequin. To be quite honest you’d been wondering what the diminutive servant had been doing behind you all this time. You’ve only come to this particular shop because Sir Gilbern mentioned it off-handedly on the road, and you don’t believe the Queen’s Herald to be someone to dress like a complete fool.

”Oh no, sir.” The bespectacled man says very seriously, as if he were warding you against the mortal danger of appearing unfashionable. ”Not at all sire, very much in this season.”

”I suppose…” You say with some apprehension, handing over the coin. ”I’ll take some of your more casual wear as well, for less formal occasions.”

”Of course, sir, of course.” Mister Verdicci gives an impressively low bow, snapping his fingers. ”Jeeves!”

[3/3]

You get lost several times on your way back to Lion’s Mane Inn, overwhelmed by the winding streets and thrumming hub of humanity. The sheer number of people. Hundreds, no maybe thousands! And just in this main thoroughfare alone. You’d been impressed when the whole of Grenoble turned up to the execution of Sir Vancewell, but it appears that the whole of Grenoble and then some could fit inside the Aubrey Merchant Quarter alone. In less than an hour you see more human beings than you’ve ever met over the course of your life. Outstanding, here lies the beating heart of your great nation!

A shout catches your ear, then a loud smash and some laughter with a hard-edge to it. Even in the throng of people, the culprits are obvious. Dressed in garishly colourful and contrasting display of attire that made Mister Verdicci’s wares look demure by comparison, they look like trouble. No one seems to pay heed to their behaviour, in fact the folk closest to the spectacle seem to be avidly avoiding making eye contact with the rambunctious rabble.

They’re teasing another boy younger than them, and much more raggedly dressed. Some sort of urchin, then. They taunt, slap and shove him occasionally, waving a gold coin in his face with glee. A youth tosses the coin over his head to a fellow, then again. On the third toss the beggar boy catches the coin, knees one of the gang in the loins and sprints away. Or tries to at least, a youth trips him and quickly there are five well-dressed fops kicking savagely at one beggar on the ground.

”Here, let’s give the little thief a reminder he won’t forget.” One of the youths, the one kneed in the balls, steps forward hand on a dagger.

>29 voters

You samefags do know that Forgotten will just recast the vote right?

Honestly, I think Forgotten made a mistake by making a choice like this be the first vote in the thread. The first vote in a thread should never be an important or contentious one, as that will simply invite stupid levels of samefagging because all ID's will be new and mostly have only 1 post.
>>
>>3259042

>>
>>3259055
There's been plenty of occasions where Anons samefagged out of spite or just to prove a point, even if the matter itself was dumb.

So let's not kid ourselves, saving the kid doesn't matter much. All of this boils down to a White Knights vs Edgelords debate.
>>
>>3259062

The best part is that it's the same excuse and justification that Vancewell used when he was confronted.

https://archived.moe/qst/thread/3049678/#3063026

>”They were peasants! Hog-bedding, mud-slinging peasants! What do they matter?”
>>
>>3259198
I mean its not like they necessarily voted for those vancewell options, after all, there were even some anons who voted for killing vancewell after disarming him, despite our oath clearly forbidding it. I dont feel Its really hypocrisy to pick an option that forgotten has presented as being a reasonable action Emile could take due to an aspect of his personality(his haughtiness). On the other hand, I think at this point picking the haughty option would be too strong a shift from Emile's actions in the vancewell trial. His haughtiness doesnt seem to be "what the fuck are these peasants doing in my way", more so "Due to my superior breeding and talent, I am superior, and thus have a responsiblity to protect those beneath me in exchange for their servitude".

I'm pretty sure the implication is that the richer kids are going to mutilate the poor one("reminder he wont forget"), besides this is literally the type of behavior that we were disgusted at vancewell for, nobles(?) abusing the common folk for their own pleasure/amusement then crushing them when they fight back.

A re-vote with no single digit IPs would be the easiest I feel.

Honestly I would feel a lot better about the Haughty reply if the anon voting for it wasn't being a meming faggot totally contradictory with the past actions of Emile. Namely the responsibility aspect of it.

I think I'd be more likely to go for >>3258820, where we insist on being a stickler for the rule of law.

Which, ironically, here might mean the thief gets killed whereas the Nobles might have let him off with some flesh wounds.

Still though, the best violence is State Approved violence, because it has the checks and the balances on it.

But mostly I can recognize a plot hook when it's waved in front of our fucking faces.

I find it interesting there wasn't an option to intercede on behalf of the nobles either. Personally, the idea of this hick knight with money and honour than acumen barging in and insisting on helping them by taking the thief to stand trial, promising to dig to the heart of the matter and see their goods restored, would be fun regardless of who was in the right or wrong in the situation.

Nobles can justify marrying commoners for profit. If Jean even is a commoner. Isn’t she foreign? And Kyria was in a command role. She’s more than likely a noble.
>>
>>3260313
>Nobles can justify marrying commoners for profit
Absolutely not what the fuck anon, I don't think you quite understand how important family, ancestry, lineage and inheritance are to nobles
Only the poorest, most destitute noble families would even consider that and that would be a massive shame on their honour
>>
>>3260313
>Nobles can justify marrying commoners for profit.

Knigga, we ran into this drama back in thread 2 when we found out Gladsdale married a commoner. Gladsdale ended up getting disowned, and basically running a pity section of land for that. Granted, it's not like she was a rich burgher's daughter, but Emile's shock and general distaste was notable, even taking into account that he was Gladsdale's friend. Tracker Jean might be considered differently, considering that she's foreign-born, but I agree that Father would probably pop a blood vessel after his first son's trash-fire just got sorted out in time for his other son to marry some foreigner of uncertain reknown.
>>
>>3260324
IC, our character already threw shade at his close friend for marrying a peasant, only relenting after considering his friendship.

Can't see him properly taking on a commoner as a wife easily.

well considering it's an othe we can take
>>
>>3260376
Only if we take the vow. Even then it only says bastard. Kick the woman after sex and everything will be fine.
>>
>>3260324
It's a more frequent occurrence in Pascae, where the balance between Merchant and Noble is more even in terms of influence.

>>3260370
As another anon pointed out, the Oath certainly frowns on 'pumping and dumping'. The focus on the negativity of fornification is primarily against adultery and siring illegitimate children. This still happens, of course, but it's scandalous if discovered.

Sex outside of marriage occurs as much here as it did in any point of human history, it's unlikely that there would be any consequences for the discreet actions of two consenting unmarried adults unless it leads to a baby. Abortion happens, as it always has, but carries the same stigma as it always has as well.

There are other ways to churn the butter, so to speak, but I'll leave that to anons as to whether Sir Andrei would consider that cheating the spirit of the oath while technically obeying the letter.

+1 Step on the Path of Adam

You are willing to let boys be boys, or at least not dirty yourself with the mundane affairs of the peasantry, but allowing 5 of them to mercilessly beat and mutilate another in plain view of all and sundry is an outrage you cannot ignore. Rather than apprehending the thief, if you can even call the quick-fingered urchin that, they seem set on beating him half to death and then some. If anything they appear gleeful that the unfortunate beggar gave them some excuse escalate their violence, the gold coin lies ignored on the stone pavement by the waif's cowering body. Remembering the Knight's vow to always lend your blade to the helpless, even the lowliest of that order, you decide to intervene.

"Draw that blade boy, and I shall see that you use it." You step forward, gauntlet not quite gripping your own sword but resting all-too-casually over the hilt.

The colourful assortment of bullies pause in their assault at your intrusion, their stare starting eye-level at your chestplate before dragging horizontally to your towering figure. Even the guttersnipe squints upwards, the sun casting a shadow over your face. The youth with the half-drawn dagger licks his lips nervously, your advantage in size and armament plainly obvious. He looks to his fellows for support, and to your surprise there is a tense moment of hesitation as they weigh up their advantage in numbers against this intruding martial stranger.

These troublemakers couldn't possibly be stupid enough to attack an armoured knight in full view of the public eye. Could they?

>2 Success

You had expected this collection of miscreants to flee immediately from your presence, but the stubborn folly of youth causes them to bristle at this stranger’s interruption of their fun. They clearly don’t want to get into an altercation with someone like you, but they’re also struggling to end the stand-off without looking like they’re backing down in front of the passing onlookers as the situation has caught some attention.

Your fingers twitch over the hilt of your blade, you really don’t want bloodletting on your first day in the Capital over some idiot teenagers. And on the day before your Vigil, to boot. Thankfully, you are interrupted by an armed patrol before any of them do something to escalate the impasse out of sheer bravado.

”Miles Tomson, shouldn’t you be minding your father’s shop?” The speaker is no Kingsman guard but a member of the Holy Order of the Knights Comitas, flanked by two more of his brethren. ”And Jeanne Younger, shall I let your mother know what you were up to at next Sendag prayers?”

The words seem as effective as a column of kingsmen in clearing the field, with a few mutterings of ”No needs, sir, was jus’ on our break s’all.” and an insolent glare or two at you and the beggar boy the gang disperses.

[1/2]
>>
>>3262660

”They’ll consider attacking an armoured knight out of pride but back down at the mention of their mother at prayer?” You shake your head, wondering if everyone in the city is this crazy.

”We were all foolish in our youth once, I think we can agree. Salve Reginae send that their minds mature as their bodies do.” The Holy Knight kneels down to inspect the urchin. A few welts and bruises, but nothing as serious as the filth and malnutrition they already suffer from. ”You were lucky, child. Things may have turned out much worse for you before I arrived had this good knight not intervened.”

”Tell us your name, Sir Knight.” The grizzled man smiles, still kneeling.

”Andrei, sir. Emile Andrei.” You bow your head respectfully.

”Fanks, m’lord Andrei.” The beggar boy says to you both, too humbled to make eye contact. ”Fanks, m’lord Moray.”

While Gilles de Moray introduces himself the other two knights only nod at your introduction. An act which you find to be a little rude until you remember that many members of the Knights Comitas take vows of silence, chastity and poverty. Certainly these knights do not seem beggarly, though their cloth be rough and their armour plain. You’re familiar with the Knights Comitas, having served as a footsoldier on the Ardenne borders during your required tour of duty as all Romaine children do. You had been fortunate to avoid the worst of the Deadmen incursions, but the Holy Knights and their spartan lifestyle were demanding on their own. You remembered Mother and your sisters shaking their heads at your unrepentant gluttony at the feast held during your return. It was the best you had eaten in over a year.

The Knights Comitas, unlike several other orders, are widespread and operate independently for the most part. In contrast to the Order of the Broken Blade, and other Cain-aligned purely martial orders, the Knights Comitas funder, associate with and even directly control non-military missions such as a monasteries, nunneries and public places of healing for the downtrodden. Their members move from chapter house to chapter house at will, as these places are usually only stopping points on the way for guiding pilgrims and other holy missions. They are, to your knowledge, the only Holy Order to maintain a Chapter House in foreign lands, most famously in Cathagi at the start of the Long Walk. Even during your service you never understood how they distinguished the rank of one another in the order, not that it mattered for you at the time as they were all equally your superior during your time there.

Fascinating.

I wonder how they direct themselves in combat without verbal communication. I'm guessing that the restriction does not apply to the written word and so those that do can communicate by doing so?

[3/3]

”Now, let’s look at getting you some food.” The waif looks up at Brother de Moray words, eyes wide and hungry. ”And perhaps a change of clothes, hm?”

”Food and clothes… almost werf losing dat gold coin over…”

”What gold coin?” The Knight Comitas say, standing up and stepping back to reveal the coin under his boot.

The beggar boy takes the coin with some hesitation, a development you feel uncertain about. Technically, him catching the coin might be considered an act of thievery. But their behaviour, and obvious possession of more wealth than sense, would probably make punishing the starving waif an act of cruelty instead of justice. Still, you don’t entirely approve of the Knight’s Comitas tacit approval of the boy winding up with the coin.

The other two knights help the boy up, dusting him off. You note that, aside from a few missing fingers and a torn ear they’re in relatively decent shape for a beggar and even younger than you had first though. You’d not be surprised to learn they had yet to see their tenth summer, if they even know when they were born.

”Sir Andrei. A pleasure to make your acquaintance.” Brother de Moray grasps your hand with a surprising vitality for an old man. ”And what brings a young knight of Romaine to Fair Aubrey? The bustling markets, the rumours of Court and whispers of the fair ladies, the stirrings of Royal Power?”

”The Vigil, Holy Brother.” You speak with more respect than knights of other Duchies might, Romaine has always had a close bond with the Church and its Orders.

”The Vigil, of course.” de Moray smiles. ”And do you come to pay your respects or stand the full night and day?”

---------------------------------------------------------

> “I come to pay my respects, as all knights should at some point.” It is tradition, and one you at least will not shirk from. [Hearty]

>”As Adam held the breach for a night and day, so too shall I hold the Vigil so.” It is not a requirement, but you do not think it fitting for a knight to stand anything less than the full Vigil. [Haughty]

>”I mean to stand the full Vigil, Holy Brother. And then also at Motte-Fallavon Fields, Brother’s Landing in Pascae and the Long Walk in Cathagi.” You had considered a full pilgrimage for some time now, but this is the first instance you have spoken so aloud. [Idealist]

Those higher in the command structure are generally exempt from the Vow of Silence, so we can infer that Gilles de Moray is at least a leader of his immediate squad of knights if not higher in rank. Even those of higher ranks may take the vow, and receive special dispensation to speak only what is necessary for effective command.

Taking the Vow of Silence does not proscribe the written word, but pious brothers will only communicate by such when it is a matter of necessity. Passing notes like school children in the brotherhood takes away from the purpose of the Vow.

How do anons generally feel about Emile possibly joining an order himself? Probably not right now as doing so might be a lengthy process for all we know and we've got other stuff to do, but as a long term prospect to consider.

Forgotten, if you dont mind me asking, other than purely martial orders and the Comitas, what other types of orders are there generally? Can they be based on Families? service to the king/queen? etc.
>>
>>3262815
We've basically committed to serving a term of service with the dragonguard.
>>
>>3262815
err depends on the state of our brother, if we find any good noble women waifus and if we ever go through something traumatic that would make us want to join an order.
>>

Even then as long as our brother is heir-less it makes joining an order pretty risky unless its only temporary like the Dragon Guard.

The vote is clearly in favour of declaring your pilgrimage, though I shall leave it to another vote later to see whether this shall be one of your sworn vows to complete.

This is perfectly in character. Andrei probably views the pilgrimage as a spiritual challenge that he is up to. Whether this compliments his endeavour or makes it more difficult remains to be seen.

These are just a few of the Minor Orders, I’ve only included ‘knightly’ orders as I’m sure you will meet pilgrims from non-military bodies during your journeys.

>Order of the Aeldin Tree (SecularOld Faith)
One of the oldest orders in Cantôn, pre-dating even the Brothers. Numbering no more than three knights at any given time, they stand a watch over the last Aeldin Tree in Aubres located in the Royal Gardens.

>Sisters of the Silver Rose (Secular)
A rarity outside of Romaine, these warrior women often act as distinguished bodyguards and chaperones for nunneries, feminine schools, Young Ladies and even the Duchess herself. They are forbidden from competing in the manly tests of martial skill such as jousting or melees and rarely operate in any greater number than one or two. While it is not uncommon for Romani ladies to have a female bodyguard, those of the Silver Rose are the only officially church-ordained martial order and thus considered of the highest pedigree for bodyguard work. By the women at least, the men are still uncomfortable with the idea though they see the necessity. Mother considered getting a few as your sisters come of age but Father forbid it, one of the few things he did not eventually cave to her on.

>Brothers Mѐdical (Adam-aligned)
Founders of the first established hospitals on the continent, the Brothers Mѐdical are in fact both medical professionals and knights. Essentially a branch of the Knight’s Comitas, this order works closely with non-knightly doctors, apothecaries and any half-decent herbalist to work to rid mankind of diseases and injuries that plague the world. Including two further Oaths; the first being to never do harm unless to immediately prevent graver harm being done, and the second to never refuse to give medical aid those in need, makes this one of the most exclusive and demanding orders. Their order has at times been censured by the Church for being not entirely in line with the harmony of the teachings of Salve Reginae, Adam and Cain.

>Creedos Catechism (Cain-aligned)
More a sect of the Broken Blade than a separate order, these warriors make the Broken Blade look virtually restrained in comparison. Out of all the Orders and Duchies it is only the Creedos that has continually launched raids against Ardenne itself, all ending in failure. Secretive and demanding of new recruits, it is whispered that members of this order adopt any measure, technology or sorcery to combat the gravest of threats. Their unflinching devotion and harsh zealotry may intimidate some, but when facing a rogue sorcerer or Dread Lord of Ardenne one of these knights is worth ten of any other order. While they work tirelessly against the Deadmen of Ardenne, it is rumoured that members of this Order have been reported to be operating as far as West of Langland and North of Norsikaa. God knows why.
>>
>>3263236
>By the women at least, the men are still uncomfortable with the idea though they see the necessity.

Is this a line of thought common in Romaine? With their views on female folk, one thinks they'd be more accepting.
>>
>>3263248
It's one thing to let women have the run of things, but another to let them start meddling in affairs that have traditionally been the purview of men alone. It's only accepted because the issue of strapping young males guarding your virgin daughter comes with its own issues.

So it's tolerated in Romaine, but viewed with incredulity in other Duchies.

“I mean to stand the full Vigil, Holy Brother. And then also at Motte-Fallavon Fields, Brother’s Landing in Pascae and the Long Walk in Cathagi.” It is the first time you have said the words aloud, and you know them to be right as soon as they leave your mouth.

”Hmmm. So he was right.” Gilles de Moray answers cryptically. ”Godsgrace I am glad to hear it, Emile Andrei. Too many of our young knights these days go through the motions without understanding, let alone making the commitment of spirit and body you intend. I bid you good day, Son of Ursen. I imagine we shall meet again soon.”

You’re left wondering what the grizzled Holy Knight meant, and why such a pious man would know of the old ways. It’s not something your family generally likes to speak of, not to members of the cloth at least.

Eventually you finally make your way through the winding, bustling streets of the Capital to your lodgings just as sun begins to dip over the city walls.

The Lion's Mane Inn gives far too much credit to the word 'Inn'. The magnificent wooden structure isn't a mere place of drinking, it's a Hall worthy of any great Lord. They say the King himself here comes for a drink on occasion, and true enough distinguished gentry rub shoulders with commoners at the end of a hard days work. Having a friend among the Reginate is clearly a boon of no small consideration. Despite the place being packed to the rafters, literally, Sir Gilbern waves you over to a table reserved for yourself and the other people of note from the Caravan. The ale is cool, the women pretty, the music loud and the laughter merry. Your inner socialite skips and dances as you make your way through the throng to the table. Is every night at the Lion's Mane this animated? Perhaps the delivery of a great deal of wine had something to do with it.

"Emile." Sir Rabe grasp your shoulder without warning.

"What is it, Karlaus?" Your friend has a serious and slightly intoxicated expression.

"The bedrooms here have wool. On the floor." The Montbrun says. "Not wood. Note stone. Wool."

"Those are called carpets, Sir Rabe." Sir Gilbern rolls his eyes, bypassing the overtaxed serving girls by bringing some ale mugs to the table himself.

"Carpets? Carpets. By God, you southerners have some bold notions." Sir Rabe says wondrously before taking another large swig of ale. "I want to take my shoes off..."

The table laughs and the ale pours freely. Your week-long journey is over, it is good to shirk off the armour and dust of the travel. Even the squires talk animatedly amongst themselves, their charges and tasks complete in time for a drink.

[2/3]
>>
>>3263310

[3/3]

As the drinks are poured and the merry chatter continues, some hold their wine better than others.

"Ripped it's head off with his bare, bloody hands!" Sir Rabe brags to whoever happens to be in earshot, splashing his drink about between generous gulps.

"I used my sword, Karlaus." You protest with no small amount of embarrassment. "Like any knight is wont to do."

"Never let facts get in the way of a good story!" Karlaus shushes you, then bellows to those nearby. "Bear hands!"

If anything your downplaying of your contribution to the battle only cements to the growing audience that the truth is somewhere in-between Sir Rabe's boasting and your more accurate account. A number of 'oooh's and 'aaah's can be heard, as the Montbrun knight regales them with evermore colourful details of your party's journey from Grenoble. At least it's not all entirely falsehood, but that portion about wooing the perfectly ladylike Carthagi princess at the end is just ridiculous. Clearly some of the listeners are as drunk as Sir Rabe is, given that they cheer without question at the end. Miss Jean laughs aloud when you point out that they're all cheersing you with the wine she sold this place earlier today.

"Leave him be, Sir Andrei." Sir Gilbern smiles at the spectacle, sipping from his mug. "Do we expect Sir Rousseau to join us?"

"No, but I cannot blame him for preferring the quiet of prayer to this merry company." You say with chagrin, sitting but down. "But what of you, Sir Gilbern?"

>>
>>3263327
He can do the pilgrimage like anyone of any birth, though traditionally he would stand another Vigil at the Church of Adam's Martyrdom once knighted.

Historically, people sometimes actually paid others to go on pilgrimages in their stead. Then again, the Catholic Church also allowed people to literally buy their way into heaven so that's probably as slippery as a Pascae oil merchant.

"Tell us about yourself, of your life in Pascae." You say, sending Mikail to fetch your table more ale. You and Karlaus spoke a great deal to each other on the road but, in between Mikail’s training and your other duties, you realise you’ve not sat down and talked with Sir Gilbern much over the week’s journey. Something you intend to remedy.

Sir Robert Gilbern speeks freely and openly at first. He tells you much of the bustling markets of Port Bounty, where Pascae merchants rub shoulders with Langlish privateers, Norsikaan voyagers and Cathagi diplomats on a daily basis. It sounds like a remarkable place, though you can’t help but think that it sounds like some of the stories about Pascae merchants seem to be true. You'll have to watch your purse on your pilgrimage there.

Sir Gilbern talks happily for the most part, but as the conversation veers to family and home his tone takes a more sombre tone. ”My Father and I… we are not on speaking terms.”

”You are… as Sir Rousseau was then?” You say quietly, not wishing to press the knight on something that clearly is not light talking.

”No. No, not like that. I am not banished, but I have no wish to return to that place. What he...” Sir Gilbern seems about to say something more, but then blinks and looks at his near-empty mug. ”Hmm. I must be deeper in my cups than I thought. I think I shall retire. Congratulations on leading a successful expedition, Miss Jean, and to you on your victory, Sir Andrei. I think we should speak again, on another matter that might interest you.”

”Of course, friend.” You nod, embarrassed to have raised a troubling subject for the Reginate. You believe there’s more to the story but have no wish to cause him discomfort. ”I did not mean to…”

”No, I know. There’s no mean guile in you, my good man.” The man smiles tepidly. ”And please, take that as a compliment.”

The Queensguard bids you goodnight, managing to deftly avoid a crushing embrace from a now solidly inebriated Sir Rabe on the way to bed.

”Well that was…” Track Jean pauses, then shrugs and takes a sip from her mug.

You also offer no comment, instead electing to also take another swig of ale and watch Sir Rabe’s antics.

”Mah Pa had me break in mah first filly before I was even big enough to carry ‘is boots!” From what you can tell Miss Jean is bragging about how young she was one she tamed her first Wasteland Mustang. She’s not drunk to your reckoning, but her Wastelander accent comes out in full force after a wine or two.

”Regardless, Miss Jean, your upbringing as a professional horse-tamer does not make you an endless font of knowledge on the complex issue of rearing such beasts in a domestic setting.” You scoff, though you admit you almost enjoy arguing with anyone on horse husbandry. No one at home took much interest in your hobby, even Father.

”And I’m sorry, sir, but your lack of reading History from the Saddle or any of the dummies-guide-to-horses books hardly makes you an expert either.” Miss Jean gives you a wide smile, an infuriating know-it-all attitude serving her as well in horse husbandry arguments as it did in the market bartering.

You bristle at the barb, but admit that you should get around to taking your interest in horse husbandry more seriously. At some point the Wasteland accidentally kicks you under the table . You’re sure it must be an accident, you imagine her leather boots would leave a noticeable impression on your now unguarded shins if it were intentional. Still, you notice that she doesn’t move her leg away afterwards.

As the night draws on and the inn’s patrons begin to dwindle, you make your way upstairs. You have the coin to afford your own room, but at such a prestigious location and at such short notice you must make do with sharing a room upstairs with Mikail, albeit a comfy one. It seems your squire is already passed out in there, and it also seems he snores after drinking. At least, unlike Karlaus, he made it to his room. Miss Jean pauses by your door as you go to open it, apparently to gloat that she managed to secure a room all to herself. One with carpets.

”You uh, you remember that book we were talking about?” For some reason the young woman hesitates, fiddling with a stray thread on her shirt.

”You mean when you outed me as an amateur for not reading ’History from the Saddle’? Yes I remember.” You mutter sourly, though your grin takes the bite out of it.

”Yeah, that one. I happen to have a copy.” Tracker Jean bites her lip nervously.

”If you don’t mind me borrowing…”

”It’s in my quarters. If you wanted to read it that is.” The Wastelander’s cheeks flush with colour, red enough to camouflage her freckles. ”Tonight, I mean. If you want.”

You are slow, according to your sisters at least, but you’re not that slow.

>>
>>3263972
Also Miss Jean isn't exactly some random peasant girl; her family is quite prosperous for Wasteland I guess in Cantonian society the closest analogy would be someone from the gentry or the merchant class?
>>
>>3263974
You're missing the point, sex should mean something to a Idealist like Emile, nobility shouldn't go sticking it in a peasant because she's attractive to a Haughty fucker like Emile.
>>
>>3263990
Just because a farmer or a millar is rich and succesful doesn't mean that they aren't still a commoner.
>>
>>3263993

Again thats not the point, two of the three traits Emile has defintively frown upon these kind of tryst's, I could see it mattering less if Emile wasn't an Idealist but he is.

>>3264001
Because theirs no reason to say it will be yet, we have effectively know her for a few weeks at most and even then not particularly deeply as the most we've gotten out of properly is a Innuendo regarding Horse cock and horse talk in general.
>>
>>3264018
Its was marriage that surprised Emile, and once that was a reality he was supportive of their relationship. Let Emile live a little it doesn't make him a manslut.
>>
>>3264027
that really doesn't have any bearing on what Emile does here because its not his life that was impacted by that decision.
>>
>>3263974
I would say that sex is a rather important thing for somebody who's idealistic and haughty as Emille. Something you save for a high-born waifu for the first night as a married couple.
>>3263990
Most nobles in Canton frown at intermingling with the lower classes. It's even more preposterous if they're of foreign origins.
>>3264027
But it simply isn't in Emille's character. Why would the haughty idealist who stumbled in his words when he faced the Norveski lady and who showed a dissaprovement at Willem marrying the commoner (altough she did grow on him) go hunting for drunken cowgirls?
>>
>>3264037
>stumbled in his words when he faced the Norveski lady

He was way out of his league there
>>
>>3264037
Glasdale literally married some random buxom peasant.
>>
>>3264037
Haha no.

No I'm going to have to disagree with all your opinions of Emile, because above all those he's a young, naive, noble, healthy (ahem) man out in the world for the first time.

He's still developing, through our choices, and this is a novel situation for him providing the opportunity for character growth in all directions.

In character for Emile, at this point, would be to spaghetti the situation. The roll would be for if he spaghetti things badly enough to ruin his chance at sex or not.
>>
>>3264046
Also tipsy. And we all know he can't handle his alcohol well.
>>
>>3264045
yes and? thats Glasdale not Emile, while Emile can at least accept his Friend is married and happy about it he can also say that its was not prehaps the finest and most outstanding thing his friend has done for himself

>>3264046
>Ignoring that this in fact flies in the face of two of the three core character traits that drive Emile as a character.
>>
>>3264052
Your issue is that you're forgetting there are degrees and depth to all three character traits. They aren't DnD Alignments.

To what degree you want to take those traits are perfectly valid, but so are the other anons.
>>
>>3264052
It doesn't fly in the face of those traits. There's plenty of justifications you could make along those axis.

In fact there's two examples for yes and no in the vote post.
>>
>>3264037
My only guess (It's not a good one but it's the only one that makes sense in the context of things) is that despite his upbringing and status, Emile is very much a out of his depth young man when it comes to things like courting women, doing business in the realm of investments and merchandising and so on. So when you have someone like Jean who does not act like a normal woman by Emile's standards but also shares the same interest in a hobby and can be very upfront with what they want, it's no wonder that Emile can be tempted into having sex with her since most of the "hard work" was already done in the form of horse autism and the fact that she's giving us the time of day.
With that being said, I'm not going to vote because I'm more curious as to how this is going to play out and whether or not Forgotten's gonna do another lightning fast elimination voting round again.
>>
>>3264059
>Your issue is that you're forgetting there are degrees and depth to all three character traits. They aren't DnD Alignments.

Yeah and this tryst still flies in the face of most of the driving Ideas depth or no, I'm not denying that their may be depth to those but no discussion or thought has so far laid the foundations for such potential to be brought forward to Emiles character.

>>3264060
It entirely does, Idealism of Chivalry and propriety is not in sleeping out of wedlock nor is it within the propiety of a Haughty Noblemen to be sleeping with a common woman no matter how rich her family may be or how attaractive she may be.

the only trait this may appeal to is his Heartyness but it clashes so poorly with his other driving traits that I can't see a concession to it under anything than the most egregiousof circumstances.
>>
>>3264046
I wouldn't mind if he banged some woman because of his brazen youth but I want that moment to be largely impacted on by previous events and situation. Just deciding to ride some cowgirl with whom we have talked a few times about similar interest and travelled with some time, seems simply too much of a drastic change. And we're also talking about a young knight who flagellated himself as atonement and who plans to stand the full Vigil on all the pilgrim sites. Would he truly fall into temptation so easily?
>>
>>3263972
Emile didn't mind that Willem slept with a peasant woman. He only disapproved of Willem marrying her.

In his own words:
>''You spend several moments calming yourself before you respond. Sir Glasdale has behaved in an ignoble and unknightly way. More ignoble than those Lords with a brace of common mistresses and bastard children? You suppose the priests might have a different opinion on the virtuousness of Glasdale’s decision, but really this would all be less confronting if he was just ploughing the damned woman.''
>>
>>3264071

While I do actually support pursuing Jean, I think it would be in keeping with Emile's character to not go for the immediate drunken tumble. The slow burn is more fitting here I think.
>>
>>3264094
I imagine that we wouldn't have had this particular occasion if Emile talked with Kyria instead of Jean on the way to Aubres.

He would have been sexually assaulted by the former in that case, but that's another matter.
>>
>>3264071
>Would he truly fall into temptation so easily?
He is young and inexperienced, its his first time in the capital after soon moderate drinking and has recently enjoy victory in battle and much success in business. The situation seems pretty favorable in that regard.
>>
>>3264098

That's why i voted for kyria, when Emile wakes up in her tent after being roofied it aint his fault.
>>
>>3264079
"Less confronting." He may dissaprove marrying a low-born more than having sex with one, but it doesn't mean he's fine with it. And while he wouldn't mind much that other people are doing it, would you really think he would so easily commit such an act himself?
>>3264082
Jesus doubted when he was nailed to a cross while having a whipped back and crown of thorns on his head. Emille is lying in a bed in a comfy room in which he's preparing for a good night's sleep.
>>3263972
Also, I'll change the vote to
>>”I… no, Miss Jean. That would not be proper.” Though you’re tempted, by God. [Idealist]
>>
As an aside, I wasnt here for BCQ, so what is Forgottens attitude towards writing lewds? Is it just a fade to black or what?

>>
>>3264108
Its kept pretty vague, no vivid details but enough to paint something of a general picture of what happened.

Princes fucked up use of HBFM as a sex thing was certainly an intresting addition
>>
>>3264093
Haughty doesn't mean anything as long as he doesn't marry her. As for Idealist, Emile right now is tipsy with drink, young, eager and inexperienced so i find it unlikely that he won't accept.

>>3264105
>would you really think he would so easily commit such an act himself?

Of course not. That's why Emile wouldn't have accepted while he was in the caravan, but now it's different now and I do believe he would do the act as both the drinks and having got to know her would make him much more likely to accept and be interested.
>>
For Anons that are arguing that Emile wouldnt sleep with a commoner, Jean is wealthy, educated, and comes from a respectable family, shes hardly a random tavern wench we picked up behind the barn. Even if we married her(which is not what we're doing right now anyway), I believe Forgotten has stated that while father wouldn't approve, mother would, suggesting that while its somewhat improper, it still wouldn't come close to the social breach Glasdale committed, and probably wouldnt really hinder us from achieving high status in civilized courts and such
>>
>>3264122
>I believe Forgotten has stated that while father wouldn't approve, mother would
I don't necessarily disagree with you Anon but I believe this bit was aimed at a possible Cathagi noble waifu.
>>
>>3264124
Ah, you're probably right, but still, considering the Cathagi are literal slavers, I'd assume it more or less applies to a family like the trackers.
>>

>>
>>3264115

Oh it absolutley does, it means not sticking your dick in someone below your station.

>As for Idealist, Emile right now is tipsy with drink, young, eager and inexperienced so i find it unlikely that he won't accept

Eager is perhaps an embellishment on your part but I can certainly concede the Inexperinced part though I would say it could be made as part of the case for or against your desire to bed miss Jean

>>3264122
Trackerjean may come from a wealthy family of repute but that repute lies in the wastes a long way from Canton and still of common stock, she may as well be a peasant herder all things considered.
>>
>>3264137
>Oh it absolutley does, it means not sticking your dick in someone below your station.

Then we will have to agree to disagree on this then.

>Eager is perhaps an embellishment on your part but I can certainly concede the Inexperinced part though I would say it could be made as part of the case for or against your desire to bed miss Jean

Not at all. I voted for persuasion instead of courting for Tracker Jean when Forgotten gave us the choice to romance her during the caravan trip. I didn't think Emile will try to romance her then, but now it's her who's making the moves on him. Also, with adding all the factors I mentioned earlier, then I find it unlikely he wouldn't accept.

Which is my whole point. Emile's base human urges, his bad alcohol tolerance, the fact it's Jean who's making the move on Emile rather than vice versa, and his clear attraction towards Jean makes it very unlikely to me that Emile isn't eager and won't accept.
>>
>>3264187
The edited Warhammer versions of those memes are hilarious.
>>
>>3264191
I know, I disagree on the general assertion that because he's had a bit too drink he'd betray not one but two of his core character traits.
>>
>>3264170
All [Trait] choices have shown some nuance so far - Idealist allowing us to either apprehend or challenge Vancewell to a duel, for example - so I don't believe it's a fair complain. Idealism might seem bland to you because - no offense - you appear to have flattened it into a "Perfect White Knight" image.

As far as the Haughty discussion is concerned, I agree that a Haughty character would never marry a commoner. However, if we are talking about mere one-night stands I can see more variety, ranging from those who would find the idea revolting to those who would be attracted to commoners who have shown peculiar qualities that distinguish them as above the rabble.
>>
>>3264209
Well, it's not just that he got tipsy with drink. There are also other factors, but it's pointless to argue further since neither of us seems to be persuaded by the other.

>>
inb4 path of thorns progression and I would rather not set a bad example for Mikhail. Look at the bright side, Forgotten mentioned that Idealistic will unlock the opportunity of Path of Thorns choices for the greater good. They be interesting takes on the subject.

>>3264300
As Anons mentioned before, Emile was more outraged by the shameless flirting (before he knew how things were) and marriage rather than sex. And even then he relented quite easily on the matter.
>>

If this was instead some young virgin noblewoman would you guys of taken her offer? The only reason you guys are taking this is because tracker jean is commoner and is leaving so you don't have to deal with the consequences of your actions.Emile would believe it to be wrong in any other situation so why is it right here? because she's a commoner? because she's offering? there is no other way to view this as Emile self indulging in bad(by his moral values) behavior because he has been offered the chance and he's a little tipsy and tomorrow he will either let his principles slide become more like a cad or have to self flagellate and be racked by regret

>You spend several moments calming yourself before you respond. Sir Glasdale has behaved in an ignoble and unknightly way. More ignoble than those Lords with a brace of common mistresses and bastard children? You suppose the priests might have a different opinion on the virtuousness of Glasdale’s decision, but really this would all be less confronting if he was just ploughing the damned woman.

”Well, if you’ve heard it all already… Congratulations. She’s pretty.”

>”I… thank you.” Clearly the man had been expecting some resistance. It’s not that you agree with him in any way, you just don’t see the point of arguing with him. The man’s been made a fool of as it is, you don’t wish to push the dagger further in. At least the girl he married was a pleasing sort for a peasant, if a little to informal towards you.

he still considered just plowing peasant woman confronting and held it in a negative light

Nah, he said plowing would have been less confronting than marrying a peasant. Was Emile more of a Cain Knight I'd agree that he would take a harsher stance on it but since he's not, I'm pretty sure that he can live with this choice.

Besides, why would the QM himself - the dude who actually knows the MC better than any of us - allow such an option if it was OOC ?
>>
>>3264460
She probably really wants to show us the book. And that's all. And thats the trap. Also paintings of horses a lot of them

Oh wait, there's no such thing. At worst it will come down to a roll which doesn't mean much since most decisions come down to one in here. If we had to cower in fear of dice we wouldn't even be playing.

>same reason he offered the ability to fight the necromancer at the end of BCQ
> low tier god of necromancy = possible one-night stand with a woman
That's some quality fearmongering. And even if you consider this a mistake, I already told you some people are more than fine with it.

Bro where are you pulling Path of thorns out of, if it was Emile using his noble status to pressure some peasant woman into sex with us, then yeah sure, but Jean herself is freely offering intimacy, I'm not saying it'll net us Adam points, but this definitely seems like a neutral action path-wise.

I'm not sure why you think its 'worse than marrying a peasant', if anything, miss tracker might be higher status than us in some aspects, considering shes been running the caravan for a while, and will likely have accrued some wealth. Anons are being too cut and dry about lumping people into either nobility or commoners. As for our principles, last I checked we don't have a vow of chastity, so no, we're not 'betraying ' our knighthood.

>>3264357
I cant speak for everybody, but I personally am interested to see how Emile would be affected by such an experience. Claiming that "The only reason you guys are taking this is because tracker jean is commoner and is leaving" is in bad faith and kinda projectory.

Good thing Emile doesn't have access to the latter.

>why risk the fallout(bastard, mikhail getting bad ideas and it going public) it's a bad trade
Bastard has a very low chance to happen, I'm not even sure what bad ideas Mikhail could get and it going public is both unlikely and not worthy of note - there are plenty of knights plowing commoners and nobody bats an eyelash.
>>
>>3264525

>>”Well… In the interests of education, lead the way Miss Jean.” You’ve never lain with a woman before, and certainly not one like the free-spirited Miss Jean. [Hearty]
>>
I guess the threat non stop whining works to change votes.
>>
>>3264540
Yeah this is getting kind of silly, using the logic anons are employing, we shouldnt have invested in the caravan, because if we rolled poorly we would be at 3 wealth with 2 debt, we should have not fought the centipede, the undead, and the beastfolk because if we rolled poorly we would have died, we should have ran away from the Cathagi troop because what if they tried to put in chains while we slept.

Now, the thing is, technically this is all literally true, if we roll poorly on anything or do anything even slightly risky we can get screwed. But you know what? every one of those decisions ended being beneficial or offered intriguing story hooks( centipede eggs, dragonguard hire, returning Gabriels shield, +4 wealth). The point is that if youre not willing to take risks, then why are you playing the quest in the first place?
>>
>>3264563
The difference being that those decisions, as you put it, had risk versus reward
I fail to see what the reward is here
>>
>>3264550
m8 i doubt I'm going to completely swing vote, this is an important vote for character development it's not a one night thing and will change the way we interact with people in the future. people should take it a little more seriously and actually think about the consequences of their actions instead of dropping all thought when a woman gives them the time of day. that's all.

Someone needs to make a Chad vs Virgin meme with Wilhelm from crusader quest as chad and Sir Emile as the virgin.
>>
>>3264651
I dont know how much literary comprehension you have, but those anons were literally rebutting anons who were arguing that Emile is disgusted with the idea of sleeping with commoners, notice how they werent using the justification that shes just a commoner as a primary argument for why we should sleep with her.
>>
>>3263908
>”Well… In the interests of education, lead the way Miss Jean.” You’ve never lain with a woman before, and certainly not one like the free-spirited Miss Jean. [Hearty]

You guys are missing the boat on Jean. Emile is not a landed knight. His brother is the heir to the family lands. Let's look at the choices we've had so far.
>Norveski
We pretty much blew it. Which honestly works out better. We don't need to be beholden to other lords.
>Kyria
Has trade contacts and can help Emile but she's a slaver. That's just not good.
>Jean
She is from a wealthy family. She is well versed in trade. She shares interests with Emile. I don't know if anyone remembers but she was a possible ranged companion. She could really help Emile if he was to earn lands of his own.

Jean isn't just for lewds, she's a keeper.
>>
>>3264663

>>3263908

>”Why Miss Jean, who could refuse such an offer?” You’re bedding the woman, not wedding her after all. You wonder if you’ll be the rider, or the Mustang. [Haughty]

Christ almighty, anon's are overthinking real hard. There's other ways to enjoy a night together that don't risk birthing bastards. I'd rather show the side of Emile that, despite striving for honour, chivalry and valour, he is still a man at heart. It's not like we were planning on taking up the cloth in the future.
>>
>>3264607
> It's what my character would do!

Clearly fucking applies to all the options Forgotten put in. Tacit approval of either way.

If you think the GM needs to "trap" you with bad choices, you should quit. No, seriously, if that's truly what you believe is happening in the game then you aren't going to have any fun. Trap choices are a sign of a terrible GM.

And saying "but it HAS to happen this way" is fucking worse. It's a game of pretend, literally ANYTHING could happen. That beggar urchin we saved? Could have turned out to be a Noble child going out in disguise. Or a wandering wizard. Or the whole event could have been staged by the Knights on the patrol to evaluate the reaction of a new Noble Knight come to town who had been recently involved in a very political trial of a powerful and connected member of one of the main factions.

So many reasons to intervene that the "Yeah Nah Peasant Scum" faction that seems to have popped up this thread tried to samefag against.

Don't think that vote wasn't revealing AF. Shit came out of nowhere at the end of last thread.

Man why do we have to even roll for a bastard? It's not like people didn't have birth control in the middle ages, and with Jean being a trader I'm sure she's got some.

I mean, I don't know how society views birth control, but in general religion is against it so they can control access to sex (legitimizingit via marriage) so it's probably not something Emile would think of.

But women have always had to be more practical about these things, given that they deal with the fallout.

People have ALWAYS used it. It's the best argument for legalizing abortion, because it's harm reduction even if you believe fetuses are people with a soul and that abortion is murder, because making a it a legitimate and thereby safe option for the mother, prevents two people from dying - if that's your perspective.

People are gonna fuck, and they're gonna get abortions rather than ruining their lives and raising a pariah child in suffering.

So really there shouldn't be a roll unless Jean is exceptionally pious. Even then, there's a large number of pro-life women who still get abortions.

Even if Emile isn't thinking about the risk of a bastard, I'm confident Jean is aware of it.

>WITH THE LITERAL TITLE BEING SWORN TO VALOUR
>VALOUR MEANING strength of mind or spirit that enables a person to encounter danger with firmness : personal bravery

You are one of the most sickening, disgusting, vile creatures to walk this planet. The simple fact that you would even attempt to twist this quest into your personal, simply put, satanic and evil worldview speaks volume about your character. There has never been any positive outcome in regard to abortion as it has been strictly forbidden, and at the very least met with social stigma, in almost every single religious dogma, society, and culture since time immemorial.
This includes the fact that many women who go through with the sickening process have regret almost immediately afterwards, have a harder time becoming pregnant later in life, and are actually more likely to DIE due to the abortion.
At the very least you have down the nomenclature. It is PRO-life, because the child in the womb is life and not ANTI-life, as you are so trying to shill here.

May God have mercy on your soul, because when you go to Hell, the Devil sure won't be as forgiving.

Dude, I'm not really sure what point youre trying to make here, If Forgotten decides Jean has some form of primitive contraceptive then she does, if not she doesnt. You're not going to really convince Forgotten whether a roll is needed or not, deciding that and which circumstances necessitate it is literally the job of the QM. As for abortion, just dont, man. Regardless of your views, literally nobody wants to see the ensuing shitstorm from an abortion debate, It's a fantasy knight quest, leave complex modern debates to real life politics.

>”Well… In the interests of education, lead the way Miss Jean.” You’ve never lain with a woman before, and certainly not one like the free-spirited Miss Jean. [Hearty]
> Don't believe the QM's lies! Seize destiny with your own hands! [Roll for it]

-----------------------------------------------------------

Tracker Jean is an enigma to you. A woman in a position of power, something Romaine is not unused to perhaps but not in the traditional domestic and influence sense. Rather than abiding by courtly interactions or trying to figure out what her game is, Miss Jean has struck you as one of the most genuine folk you’ve met. As a foreigner the norms of Cantôn don’t apply to her, she is a self-made adventurer and unabashed in her bizarre lifestyle. If she thinks a man wise or a fool she will call him wise or a fool, regardless of his station or place in society. Such an attitude at times rankles you, but it also fascinates you.

”Well… In the interests of education, lead the way Miss Jean.” You hope that sounded more confident to her than it did to you in your own head. Could you really be about to know a woman in the carnal sense?

”I was hoping you’d say something like that.” Miss Jean smirks and with that grin all concerns of proper behaviour and the dangers of lust are momentarily banished from your mind. You want this woman.

There is indeed a copy of ’History from the Saddle’ lying on the bedside table, but the Wastelander’s lips are on top of yours before you ever make it that far. It’s a somewhat awkward fumble, Tracker Jean has to stand on the tips of her toes just to reach your chin. To her relief, you lean down to make the task easier. This isn’t like your first playful kiss, stolen from one of the kitchen maids on a dare. This kiss is hungry, fierce and inquisitive. The tongue is a surprise, albeit a welcome one, as is the light bite on the lips.

”Blessed Rains, what have they been feeding you?” While one hand runs up the back of your shirt another grips your arm, barely covering the top of your bicep. Jean squeaks playfully as you plop her onto the bed effortlessly. ”Woah there, big fella.”

”Apologies Miss Jean, I-“ You stammer, interrupted as Jean nudges you with her leg and somehow navigates her way out from under you, ending up on top.

”Tonight it’s Jean, just Jean.” A light hand pushes your chest back down onto the bed. The same hand remains there as Jean expertly sends her signature hat spinning onto a bedpost. ”Now, let’s see about getting that shirt of yours off.”

You awake to a thin, wiry arm draped across your shoulder. The arm is kissed by the sun and dotted with freckles, further down there is a tussle of surprisingly soft hair splayed across your chest. So… that was something. You stare awake at the ceiling for the long minutes as the sun properly rises. You decide to unpack it all later, not just the experience but also what exactly you and Jean are now, if anything. Perhaps for a time when people aren’t starting to wake up and possibly notice that you haven’t slept in your room. You gently prise the arm away and slowly begin to sidle out of the bed.

”Mmf. Was goin?” The mess of hair speaks, using as few words possible.

”I’m going to get some breakfast.” You say softly, extricating yourself from the not unwelcome and warm embrace of your bedtime partner. ”Did you want me to have someone bring something to eat up for you?”

”Mmf. Sleepin’.” The mess of hair says nothing further.

”Is that a-“ You are silenced by a perfectly aimed pillow landing in your face, thrown with remarkable precision by the sleeping Jean without her so much as stirring to aim. ”Right. Back to sleep then.”

You return to your quarters to find the room empty and tidied up. Downstairs the squires have already begun breakfast, Mikail setting aside a generous plate for you. Out of tall the squires yours is the only one that doesn't look absolutely miserable, storming on through the hangover to take full advantage of the bountiful breakfast before him. Mikail's appetite is.... voracious, he assaults the meal like he was charging a breach in a castle wall.

"How can you..." Sir Gilbern's surviving squire looks paler than usual. He pushes his plate towards Mikail, shuddering as the boy grabs it eagerly. Monisuer Lireaux gets up slowly, stops and then heaves rushes out the back door. As for Sir Rabe's squire, the boy groans and curls up into a ball on the bench. Likely his first time drinking.

You ask where the man himself is, Mikail continues digging in and points to a leg sticking out from under a table. Apparently Karlaus refused to go to bed, insisting he wasn't even drunk yet.

"Never mind them, Mikail. Keep eating, you'll want to be fully recovered before we begin our Vigil before sunrise tomorrow." You yourself commence your own assault on the food, albeit somewhat more calculated and restrained than Mikail's. Eggs, mixed with milk and scrambled over a pot. Delightful, and these pork belly sausages no bigger than a child's finger certainly hit the spot. These small pastries, surely a dessert? And baked this morning from the warmth. The Lion's Mane in certainly lives up to its reputation in the catering department. You decide to spend the rest of your stay in Aubrey here, after all you have the coin to spare for such a luxurious lodging. And you're certain that means securing your own room away from a snoring Mikail.

"Ysh m'lfgh *burp*, Yes m'lord. Sorry I slept in this morning, sir. Them maids were already making up the room by the time I got up." You wave off his laxity with just a hint of relief. It appears that Mikail didn't notice your absence from your quarters last night or, if he did, he thought nothing of it. The boy suddenly jumps in sudden realization, nearly choking on a mouthful of egg. "Oh m'lord! Them lot in the foyer received a letter for you this morning."

At least he remembered before you left for the day, you think. And it gives you something to read over breakfast.

Then you notice that this letter is from Mother.

[3/3]
Emile Pawel Syzmon Andrei,

You are in so much trouble.

I was this close to throwing your father out on his ear into the commoner barracks when he came back without you, victory or no. You can imagine my surprise when we received an invitation to dinner from Lord Norveski, I knew from your letter that you were on friendly terms which is well done of you but I clearly that aging vulture sees some advantage in closening ties with his neighbor all of the sudden. That trial of yours must have really stirred things up. Your sisters loved getting that juicy bit of gossip ahead of time by the way, well done.

As for the dinner itself, that daughter of his made quite an impression. Cunning, beautiful and confident, she reminds me of me. Probably why I dislike her so much. Of course, your sister Anastazja has the younger Norveski brother wrapped around her finger already. Don't worry I'll make sure she goes easy on him. So I suppose your antics cannot be considered a total disaster for our family. But I wish you'd have told me beforehand, are you trying to send your poor worried mother to an early grave with these antics of yours?

Please come home after you're done with this. And let us know if you find that infuriating brother of yours, last we heard he was at the Capital. Your sisters would like to hear absolutely everything, what's the latest fashion? Who's marrying who? Have you kissed a princess yet? Such inane questions from these girls, I swear. They get it from your father, I know. Be sure to send them each some bauble from the markets, I'm sure that would please them.

As for your sisters themselves they each send you their love and prayers. Roselyn is attending some ball or something, our first major appearance at Court since your rash brother caused that previous incident. Anastazja is busy locking down that Norveski junior boy, maybe this one she'll keep. Halina's studies continue, I think she has aspirations for a nunnery. Goodness I hope not, your father says another one was attacked by the southern isles in the night. No survivors, who knows if it was Cathagi or Deadmen? And I haven't forgiven you for getting Maryla that disgusting egg, what kind of gift is that for a Young Lady? Despite your warning she's still scaring the young twins at every opportunity. And she insists she will join the Silver Rose, thank Salve Reginae I still have a decade to point her in a more ladylike direction. As for the young twins, they can't talk yet but I'm sure they're praying for your safety as well.

As am I, you foolish boy.

LADY PATRYCJA S. ANDREI

P.S. Your idiot father says he's very proud of you and good job slaying that monster etc etc.

[4/4]

You take the ‘another one’ to mean that another nunnery was attacked. This makes 2 in as many years, the last in winter but this one in spring. A pessimist would say that the Deadmen were getting bolder, if it is indeed them.

At the very bottom after mother's neat and crisp handwriting is a hastily scrawled 'VERY PROUD OF YOU, MY BOY! RIGHT MAKE NIGHT DON LET THEM FORGET!'. You suppose that 'N' was supposed to be an 'M', and the Don't is missing a 'T'. Usually Father has his letters ascribed for him and it tells, though you suppose he was lucky for Mother to have let him write anything at all after the sleight the two of you pulled. One of the many advantages women have over men in Romaine, they are more trusted with the correspondence. In fact, you've heard that in some areas of the Duchy many noble men are barely literate and rely on their wives as midway scribes.

Thankfully you shared a tutor with your sisters, so your handwriting is at least functional if not pleasing to the eye. You raise your eyes to call for a pen and paper only to see that one of the inn's staff is standing nearby with one ready. Really, the service in this place is top quality.

Seeing this as good an opportunity as ever to instruct Mikail on his letters you begin to slowly print out your reply.

We should probably let them know that we intend in future to stand a full Vigil, then also at Motte-Fallavon Fields, Brother’s Landing in Pascae and the Long Walk in Cathagi. as would assume that this may take some time it would also let them know of our planned movements and approximate when that may begin.

Tell them that our brother was in the capital and is heading towards Motte-Fallavon which is where we're heading next. >(1)
Tell them that your brother was in the capital and headed towards Motte-Fallavon for reasons unknown. Warn them that if Roselyn is going to attend court in Aubrey, she should be wary of House Vancewell's clout - after the trial they can't be friends of your House. If she needs help, tell her to seek aid from Sir Robert Gilbern - a Queensman yes, but he won't leave your sister in the lurch. If possible, warn Mikhail's father that his son is doing quite well so far as well.

>(2)
Leave out the most gruesome details of your fight and hanging of the Beastmen plus your visit to House Rousseau and its cause. And well, any intimate dealing with Jean.

>(3)
A few presents for your siblings, nothing too expensive. Ask Mikhail if he wishes to send something to his family too.
>>
>>3273461
It's a fucking stupid thing to do for a bunch of reasons. It's absolutely spaghetti to brag about losing your virginity to your mum and sisters in a letter the morning after, or at all really. Not only that but bragging about hooking up with a commoner which will surely upset them and would probably be disastrous for our families rep if the letter is read before it reaches them. Also as Forgotten has pointed out, it's unlikely that our family are going to be keen on chatting about sex lives, that's not how things are done.

You're weird dude

>What do you write in return? (It can be a general gist rather than a specific quote if you prefer)
Give her the general gist and that we will continue to track our brother while continuning our piligramge while avoiding to mention how far are we taking it.

>Do you recount your caravan journey in full or leave out some of the more sobering details to avoid worrying Mother?
Spare her the grisy details and focus on our successful with the caravan, our aquientance with the Carthagini, the letter of introduction to the dragonguard as well as our business and friendly relationship with Jean without giving any clues about last night.

>Do you send anything else home with the letter?
We should be on the lookout for something nice for girls.
>>
>>3273366
>What do you write in return? (It can be a general gist rather than a specific quote if you prefer)

General plan seems to be Pilgrimage and Vigils, we made some money for ourselves with a caravan investment, the movments of our brothers whereabouts and whatever else we can find out about what happened during our stay in Aubrey

(2)
>Do you recount your caravan journey in full or leave out some of the more sobering details to avoid worrying Mother?

Cliff notes of what happend, we had a largely uneventful journey, we chased off some beastmen on the kingsroad and hung them.

Forgotten's own words.

>>3273465
Don't put words in my mouth to strawman. I didn't say brag about it. Just inform them that we lost our virginity to a women named Tracker Jean. Forgotten already said that Mother would approve, so you're wrong that she would be upset. The only valid point you made is about the letter reaching someone else, but there are way more information in that letter than who we just tumbled.
>>
>>3273478
Mate... read some context. "In those parts" these parts are explicitly not those parts. Those parts happen to be the wastes, filled with Snakepeople and other creepy shit where it just so happens there are awesome horses. She is still common as fuck and just about anyone worth anything isn't going to give a fuck who she is in "those parts" if it comes out we've been fucking her.

>Just inform them that we lost our virginity to a women named Tracker Jean

You are literally Captain Autismo, that or a troll. Although I'll give it to you, I forgot that Mother would be cool with it. It's still a ridiculous idea.
>>
>>3273478
Man I don't know if you're shitposting or not, but either way youre making me laugh my ass off at the idea of Emile losing his virginity then immediately telling his mother about it. When did we gain Path of Autism points?

>>3273484
I think the context of Forgotten saying mom would be cool with it was for foreign nobles, such as from the Cathagi, I forget if it also included respectable families like the trackers or not though. Besides thats in the context of marriage, not losing our virginity, I'm pretty sure mother would start worrying about our mental health if we mentioned that.

I really don't think that's true. There are plenty of nobles who openly keep mistresses and no one gives a damn. It would be embarrassing for us if word got out sure, but no where near the stigma Willem got for actually marrying a peasant.

>>3273484

>>3273521
Eh, I doubt it. Lots of nobility through history kept loads of peasant mistresses and no one gave a crap about it.
>>
>>3273366
This update is maximum cozy.

>What do you write in return? (It can be a general gist rather than a specific quote if you prefer)
Update her on wasteland contacts, Cathagi contacts and our eventual dragonguarding. Could mention our contact is our traveling companion Miss Jean (without further elaboration) just for the lulz and as a compromise to spaghetti-anon.

>Do you recount your caravan journey in full or leave out some of the more sobering details to avoid worrying Mother?
Might as well lay it on. Good gossip and father would like it even if he gets chewed out again. Mention how profitable the caravan turned out to be. Should soften the blow.

>Do you send anything else home with the letter?
Baubles and such, as instructed. We’d look like a real cheap bastard sending nothing after bragging about profits.
>>

I'm giving support to this anon too. We really need to inform our family about the dangers our sister will face in the capital court and our brother's whereabouts.
>>
>>3273366
(1)
Our planned pilgrimage, our brothers apparent location and our intention to find him, our friendship with our current knightly companions

(2)
Mention our newfound wealth and acquaintance with Tracker Jean, briefly mention the beastmen skirmish, do mention our interactions with the Cathagi and their offer to the dragonguard(but not necessarily our acceptance, we dont want to seem brash), dont mention the shield affair, DO NOT mention our "familiarity" with Jean

(3)
I'm not sure, but maybe silk and dagger like this anon said >>3273388, basically whatever trinkets and baubles we can find that Emile thinks they would like.

No we haven't
>>
>>3273464

I like this. We should mention that we have been offered a recommendation to the Dragon Guard. Just to give her some consternation.

Also for Mikhail, we should treat this as a learning exercise. Have him try to compose a letter to his family and see how well he writes it out. It's something he'll want and the added desire will make sure the lesson sinks in harder.
>>
>>3273639
Me too anon. Though holy hell is our family huge. Eight kids? I feel sorry for our Mother already.
>>3273648
Can't wait for Mother to throw Father out of the castle when she finds out we're doing the full Vigil AND potentially a stint in the Guard. :)
>>
>>3273648
I like the idea, but if Mikail himself cant read, whats the likelyhood of his family being literate?
>>
>>3273664
They do what all illiterate families did at that time. They found an acquaintance or friend who was literate to read the letter to them. And considering that his father was able to get Emile to take him as his squire, he must at least know one of the other literate servants he can lean on to help read aloud.
>>
>>3273366

>(1)
>>What do you write in return? (It can be a general gist rather than a specific quote if you prefer

Movements of our brother, our intent on standing full vigils at each point of Pilgrimage, and potential joining of the Dragon Guard are the main points to bring up. Probably mentioning the potential for Vancewell hatred for us leading leading to problems for Roselyn should be included, as well as the new contacts in Montbrun and Freetown should help show Mother that we are taking this seriously, and not just farting around, sticking our heads into holes looking for hungry dangerous monsters. Shouldn't tell her EXACTLY how we got the Freetown contacts from Tracker Jean though, there will be a fit.

(2)
>Do you recount your caravan journey in full or leave out some of the more sobering details to avoid worrying Mother?

Leave out some of the more gruesome details. Let them know we came on a group of vile beastmen assaulting some Cathagi on an errand for the royal family, and cut them down. No need to talk about what happened at the Rousseau's, or about how many died at the Foe's hands.

(3)
>Do you send anything else home with the letter?

Some of the fine silks and that ornate dagger the other anons mentioned should be fine. Maybe including a small phial of perfume or some pressed flowers for the older sisters to show thanks for their heraldry lessons letting us know the heraldry we've run across in advance too.
>>
>>3273648
>We should mention that we have been offered a recommendation to the Dragon Guard
That is why I didn't exclude it in point (2).

>Also for Mikhail, we should treat this as a learning exercise. Have him try to compose a letter to his family and see how well he writes it out.
I thought of this but scrapped it because the guy already finds difficult reading as it is, composing even a simple letter might require some more training.

However, if enough Anons think it's a good idea you can consider it added to the plan.
>>
Forgotten, is this quest's setting low-fantasy? We have yet to see any magic.
>>
>>3273648

Maybe instead of asking him to compose one, we can ask him if he was planning on paying someone to write one home for him? It'll get the sentimentality across, and finding out how much people will charge for it will give extra motivation for learning it on his own. Offering to write it ourselves would probably be regarded as demeaning; plus, we have enough other shit to do right now.

There was a woman leading the caravan. Tracker Jean. Quite a remarkable woman of a renowned family from the Wastelands. We were so turned on by the profits of the caravan that she rode me like a Wasteland Mustang. I can't wait to bring her home with our babies.

Just wanted to commend you on your world building, OP. It's rare that I feel so invested in a story.

>>3274173
I like your response, I want to second all of this except for the obvious bits at the end.

Please, no bragging to our mother about fucking a commoner and foreigner from a country that everyone views as savage. There are some remarkably dense people in this quest, so I feel it's necessary to mention that we don't come from a progressive 21st century household where parents high-five their son for having sex with an acquaintance.
>>
>>3274395
Yeah I also wanted to be vague about the dangers we've seen. Don't want to go into too many details of the battle and the discovery of a fallen knight's armor. This would just upset her. These are things more suited for tales in the inn over flagons of ale.

For the gifts I'm assuming that they are souvenirs and not extravagant purchases requiring Wealth. A functional engraved dagger for Maryla would cost wealth for example, but a token decorative toy wouldn't. Also, Roselyn is attending the Duchess's Court right now, not the Royal Court of Aubrey.

Dearest Mother,

I was delighted to receive your letter this morning. I do miss you terribly but I must confess that I will not be returning home in time for the Summer Tourney. I have word that Damien has made his way towards Motte-Fallavon. That is my next destination after I stand my vigil here at the church. I intend to undertake a full pilgrimage, like my Grandfather did in his youth. Please do not fear for my safety, I am in good company and the thought of your prayers strengthen me.

I am glad to hear of Anastazja and Simon Norveski. I found the brothers to be good and honourable men. He would make a good husband for her. Be wary of House Vancewell, I had no intention of making enemies but I am certain that the kin of that murderous knight would do our House harm if they are able.

After leaving Grenoble I joined a caravan to the capital. My investment turned out to be quite sound. We did run into some trouble on the way to the capital. The Foe were pillaging on the King's road but they were no match for my fellow knights that travelled with us to Aubres. I have befriended two knights, Sir Karlaus Rabe of Montbrun and Sir Robert Gilbern of the Order Regina. You will be interested to know that the convoy we saved was a Cathagi delegation, hopefully Grandfather will forgive me for not striking them down immediately! Should any of my sisters visit the Royal Court I insist they travel well-guarded and do not hesitate to ask for the assistance of my friend Sir Gilbern. He’s deeper involved in politics than he lets on I suspect, but he is a good man and won’t allow my kin to run foul of any intrigue I’m sure.

I bought some new clothes here when i arrived here. The fashion is like nothing I have ever seen. Plumes are in this season for the men, a common occurrence I hear, but the demand for brighter and tighter cloth is increasingly catching on the eye for both men and women. Women may bare their shoulders but men may not or else be viewed as unseemly. The hair of men is kept short and the women is kept long but must be done up. At the very least braided but preferably covered by some form of headwear, often white from what I can tell.

I am truly sorry for the worry i have caused you, Mother, but I must continue on with my pilgrimage. I will write again when i reach Motte-Fallavon, hopefully I will have my information about my brother. His reasons for travelling so far remain unknown to me, but I am to ensure his well-being should I find him. Tell father I will share all the stories from the road when I return. I know he is eager to hear the tales.

Your Faithful Son,

EMILE ANDREI

"I... I can write 'em?" Your squire Mikail appears shocked at the offer.

"I don't see why not, any letter to my father is sure to reach yours." You're feeling benevolent today. You even allow him to send home some long-lasting sweets for his own sisters. "Right, now for the letter. You speak and I'll write. Keep it short though, I'll not have a dissertation on my hands."

"Wassa distating, sir?"

You may need to restrain yourself to three-syllables or less around the boy. "...Short. Just keep it short lad."

"To Ma and Pa and me sisters. I am in the Capital now. The buildings are very big. Sir Andrei is taking very good care of me. I walloped a beastie or two, an’ met my first Roiguard. Lots of love, Mik." ...Mikail shuffles nervously. "How was that, m'lord?"

"Good enough for a commoner." You pen in a rough approximation and allow one of the staff to sprinkle and blow on the letter expertly. You don't have the patience to go through his letters, that you'll leave to a tutor when you get around to securing the services of one. But getting him familiar with the concept and advantages of writing is a good start.

When Mister Verdicci arrives with your fitted clothes later that day you ask for a something else to show your sisters at home. In a flattering display of customer service he provides you with a sketched brochure and a complimentary set of gloves. "Sire, Verdicci and Sons specialise in only the latest fashions for both the male and female sexes. We would be delighted to expand our clientele to include the good knight's most beautiful sisters of Romaine, starting with an introduction to the current fashions of the City."

He's quite the salesman, definitely some Pascae in there, and with little prodding manages to entice you into parting with some more coin for a piece of apparel for some of your sisters. You're certain that the brochure will spark a campaign of begging and simpering before Father or Mother caves and allows them to purchase something to keep up with the latest fashions.

”What are you wearing?” Tracker Jean appears at the top of the stairs around lunchtime, looking no more dishevelled than usual. She ignores your answer in favour of the smell of food.”Nevermind, bloody foreigners…”

You’re about to remind her that she is in fact the foreigner her when Sir Rabe emerges from his floor-cave, crawling up to the dining table.

”Leave him be, woman.” Karlaus growls, his hangover having an almost physical aura to it. He squints at your clothes. ”Wait… what are you wearing?”

”It’s the latest fashion.” You insist, determined not to be put-off by two of the more uncultured members of your party.

”Hmph. Forget I asked. Bloody southerners…” The Montbrun knight shakes his head, then winces. Spotting a late-breakfast he launches in with just as much vicious vigour as your young squire.

You and Tracker Jean stare at the two of them ferociously attacking the lunch table for a few moments, your own appetites momentarily forgotten. You catch her smirk in your direction, but thankfully she is not indiscreet about your bedtime tumble last night. As a savage Wastelander, you’d worried she might say something.

Is there a nicer way to put this Forgotten? I was thinking more the lines of 'Yeah last night was nice but realistically maintaining a long-term relationship would be pretty impossible'. Plus marital responsibilities of a noble etc etc.

Come on gang. We got what we wanted out of her, now let us keep ourselves as pure as we can for that high born bride.

Do we even know enough about her and her customs to say it won’t work? There doesn’t even seem to be any concensus on whether she is noble or common.
>>
>>3276762
I don't think you understand. She is from a land we consider SAVAGE. It doesn't matter what she's considered there, it doesn't mean anything here. Our kingdom does not recognize whatever status she may or may not have, therefore it is irrelevant.
>>
>>3276704
Yeah, I don't think its really feasible to maintain an actual relationship with Jean, but I dislike the haughty option. I wish we had something that expressed our warmth toward her, and that we did not regret last night, but due to our circumstances and responsibilities, we cant engage in a long term companionship of that sort, but we do hope we can maintain a close friendship regardless.

The write-in is so autistically Adam that I kinda wish everyone will mock Emile for how corny it is.

For real guys, you're either treating Jean like a gentle wallflower who didn't understand the implications of a night of passion (in which case you're White Knight faggots) or just want to feel good about the '''''break-up''''' (in which case you're a pansies faggots).

Man up and decide to either believe lust got the better of Emile or enjoy the fuckbuddy for the stay in Aubrey.

Yes. Yes he does, or we wouldn't have a multiple choice here.

Second, he is only as innocent as Anon want him to be. If you choose the naive and derpy option, of course he will act like a naive and derpy teenager.

Anon is in control now, blaming spaghettis on the character or dice (which won't happen as it was stated by Forgotten) is just passing the bucket.

Eh, my preference was for an actual partnership. A spouse that also acts in our interests on trade and can travel with us/be a ranged companion seems far more practical than some dragged out romance option for someone who can’t feasibly follow us and is only good for intrigue, childbearing and worrying.

Somehow that viewpoint keeps getting reduced to “muh dick” by the people that try to torpedo any feminine interaction. Oh well, enjoy your boring arranged marriage in an adventure quest after the next few votes get torpedoed.
>>

Ah, so you're simply delusional.

People have already explained why that is never going to work unless Emile renounces to his noble title. If you still can't get it, it's your problem.

Pretty much every option is feasible if handled well. If you have a different opinion and a different preference then that’s cool. It’s not strawmanning to point out the obvious characteristics of different options. It shouldn’t be about sides either. In fact, I’ve already said I prefer Kyria at face value, but this just makes sense. I was pointing out the problem with deliberately voting against any option with tits like certain people have been doing from the start of the quest. No it isn't. This is a world where actions have consequences and there are limitations to what Emile can do, not a Self Insert Harem fic where everything goes exactly as the MC wants to.

One of such limits is marrying a commoner without serious repercussions.

> It’s not strawmanning to point out the obvious characteristics of different options
So the '''''obvious''''' characteristic of someone like Kean would be leading caravans, childbearing and worrying. Much better.

If you fear that all noblewomen in Canton are pure, boring princesses then I'd like to point out to the Norveski girl - who was definitely not such a stereotype - and I bet she won't be the last strong-willed lady Emile will meet.

Besides, there's always Cathagi. I doubt that any noble born in such a ruthless society will be demure or boring.

It’s not that I don’t think you’re making good points, I just think this particular case is potentially feasible (provided it’s handled carefully). >Besides, there's always Cathagi
Any drawback you apply to Jean you apply to Cathagi.
>>
>>3278172
The main difference between them on drawbacks is that the one Cathagi woman we’ve met, Kyria, was leading troops and almost certainly nobility. I’m really not sure what Jean’s status is, but general consensus seems to be that she’s common.

That and a language barrier. Curious about that bit.
>>
>>3278218
But she's foreign and from what I've read of the arguments here that it didn't matter what Jean's status is in her homeland because she's not a Canton noble. Same applies to Cathagi. Cathagi could be even worse because of the religious/political implications. They are slavers afterall.
>>
>>3278232
I just assumed that argument was shit flinging for the sake of it. Maybe that was wrong of me. That said, didn’t Forgotton say mother would be pleased about a Cathagi noble marriage, but father wouldn’t? If so, then why would she be pleased if her foreign noble status wasn’t acceptable?

Here ya go, found in thread 5.

>>3197108

>It would vex Father, which is nearly reason enough even without the unique advantages of such a match.

Sounds more like a bit of revenge on Father for letting us go on Errantry, and possible shekel reasons that other people wouldn't be able to muscle in on. Probably can't rely on it so much though. No need to have BOTH parents pissed at us in the future, that sounds like a recipe to wind up Gladsdale'd.
>>
>>3278252
And it's just assumed Jean is a commoner because we really know nothing about her family other than they wrangle horses. They may not even have something like royalty or nobility there.

Forgotten, is there such a thing as nobility in the wastelands? Or is it more just the haves and the have nots?

Can I make yet another suggestion about Jean before she is dismissed by the Puritans? Why don't we ask her about her family? Ask about how the cities are ran? Maybe it's a complete democracy.
>>
>>3278400
Backing, it’d be cool to learn more. Even if something game changing comes out, I’d still rather not revote again right now though. We’ve got things to do.
>>
>>3278400
As I've said beforehand Wastelanders don't adhere to the concept of peerage. Respect is earned purely from the sweat of your own brow.

If anons are honestly considering a marriage prospect, blood -will- be an issue but unlike Glasdales case might actually be outweighed by the opportunity of access to Wasteland Mustang stock. A hard sell but not impossible.
>>
>>3278252
Precisely this. A foreign marriage can be considered exotic, but marrying a commoner is viewed dimly.
>>
>>3278490
Out of the foreign nations in this setting only Cathagi and (possibly) Langland have nobility right? I assume whatever tribal nobility the not!-Norse have don't count.
>>
>>3278502
Probably only Cathagi, and only for a sufficiently high enough Caste. Langland's nobility is more in the sense of Roman families. People are born into these families but adulthood adoption and marriage into families is commonplace enough that your blood alone won't secure your inheritance.

And, officially, they have no actual right and over this she of others families like the patricians and plebs did. Practically, wealth speaks volumes to worth. The Langlish in fact loathe the concept and much of their nation's history is based around resisting becoming Canton's 6th Duchy.

So a plutocratic oligarchy like some Italian merchant republic then. Got it.

Well, it makes sense that marrying a Cathagi noblewoman would be way more accepted and welcomed more than practically any other foreign marriage. Cantonian nobility ARE Cathagi in origin after all. They all came with Adam and Cain to Canton and settled there.

>After Adam's martyrdom and Cain's self-imposed exile the Brother's greatest generals and retainers divided the conquered continent between them, eventually forming the Duchies. Their largely Cathagi-ethnic armies formed the landholding class, just rewards for their life of exodus and conquest.

>Pragmatic enough to understand the advantage of a central hierarchy, they appointed a Generalis Rex. This was supposed to be a wartime only appointment but, of course, the last and greatest of these General Kings made it a permanent dynasty.

>>3278986
Something with a bit of spine, to be honest. This write-in seems aimed at avoiding the passion of an affair while also being a limp-wristed attempt at maintaining the benefits of the relationship. At least an outright rejection takes some courage.

>>3279048
You might also consider it the other way. The daughter of a great Thane of the north may be considered a foreign princess, but the rank has little meaning to those in Norsicaa. Likewise a famous Courtesan might be deacribed as a foreign Lady by Cantonians despite the Langlish refuting the idea of peerage.

You're more likely to get away with marrying a foreign commoner than a local one becuase without details most Cantonions won't be able to determine why they sit in the local hierarchy. A fish out of water effect may apply in such cases.
>>
>>3279048
In Romaine alone the threat of Carthagi attack isnt a foreign or far fetched idea and it wasn't so long ago they backed a coup in Aubrey.

That's not even touching on their common reputation as slavers
>>
>>3279105
Still nowhere near looked down upon as marrying a peasant. Canton is a feudal society. Marrying a noble slaver is better than a peasant.

> You're more likely to get away with marrying a foreign commoner than a local one becuase without details most Cantonions won't be able to determine why they sit in the local hierarchy
Wouldn't a considerable amount of Cantonian nobles know that the Wastelands have no such thing as a peerage and thus see through the ruse? Tracker Jean would be seen as the equivalent of a wealthy merchant, but a merchant nonetheless.

From the lore it seems that it wouldn't be a big issue for knights from Pascae (who intermarry with powerful merchants often) and maybe Montbrun (because they seem to care less about appearances), but for knights of other Duchies it would be quite a scandal.

Given than House Andrei's recent history isn't entirely positive and IIRC outside Pascae only destitute Houses allow marriages with merchants, it might be a definitive blow to its reputation. Even the offer of Mustangs isn't assured to help the situation because while certainly lucrative it's not an activity that would make the family welcome in polite society (something something nobles shouldn't work like peasants).

Is this a valid analysis or are Cantonians more pragmatic than I'm assuming?
>>
>>3279122
It's a fairly good analysis. I'm struggling to come up with real world equivalent of a Wastelander/Romani Noble match up.

On what planet? This middling option smacks of anons wanting to maintain the recently gained trade benefits but also avoid the possible complications of continuing an affair. It's so... limp. The penitent option at least showed a greater strength of character than this. ISHYGDADT in real life.

LOST Freetown Trade Contact.
Tracker Jean is now UNTESTED loyalty. While she enjoyed your company last night she has no patience for a double-minded man. That you desire her but say that you constrained by society does not interest her in the slightest. Unimpressed with the excuses of Canton 'nobility' she prefers a man of action, both in a lover or a business partner. The Wastelander is not spiteful towards you but your conversations in the immediate future are decidedly cool. Loyalty Prerequisite = Interact with Tracker Jean involving a Successful Courtship Roll OR Successful Riding Roll (Race).

I imagine this will rustle some jimmies, but if you didn't see that coming then I genuinely worry for you. Just be thankful Jean doesn't see embarrassing you as worth her time. She isn't my preferred love-interest so it's no skin off my back.

>>
>>3279181
We shouldn't have continued fucking her either. We would've had to clarify our relationship sooner or later. Kicking the can down the road would've just prolonged it. The original haughty option should've won, but noooo fags wanted to make it like we didnt regret it and added their shitty write-in so the option haughty option won't win. Should've just rejected her and told her this was no more than a fling and continued our business relationship

Sad this happened but at least I can rest easy knowing that Forgotten pulls no punches on anon's stupidity.
I didn't vote for the chump write-in at least, so I got that going for me

>>3279191
Yeah how did that work out.

We could have kept it up until we actually had a reason to stop, like continuing on our pilgrimage.

You think she would have given up her own position and responsibility to go wait for us at home?

Cucks like you don't understand shit about relationships. Either that, or this was a sabotage vote because you weren't happy with how the last one went and wanted to "undo" it.

Your post wasn't as bad as I thought it was, because at least you stuck with the option that had some balls.

>LOST Freetown Trade Contact.

Forgotten, does this mean we lose all our trade contacts or just the one we got from letting her ride us? Would've we been able to keep the trade contact and not lower her loyalty status if the original haughty option won?

Anyway, I'm not too surprised about this (still rustled my jimmies somewhat.) We should've either gone with idealist (establish a romantic relationship with her) or rejected her (haughty) and continued as a business partner. The hearty choice simply prevented the inevitable.

This is a little disappointing since I voted for keeping the tryst going without regrets. This just stinks of insecurity and fear of peer pressure rarer than any actual conviction, we deserve the lost of the contact because of it.

>>
>>3279165
I love your shit, Forgotten, but I'm going to have to disagree strongly here. I never interpreted the Haughty write-in as limp-wristed. I interpreted it as us having a one-night stand, as she probably should have expected, and continuing on good terms. We shouldn't have to fuck regularly to remain business partners, nor should we have to fall in love. And seeing ourselves as weak for educating ourselves in sex is even more pathetic.

What's limp-wristed about continuing to be friendly with someone while not wanting to fuck them?

And before the smartasses who were hiding in the bushes waiting for the right opportunity to call anons stupid virgins say anything, I have been in several relationships and some don't work out. You don't have to be regretful of a short fling, and you don't have to continue it for a person to not hate you. This is a mature way to assure someone that you're not going to be continuing the relationship, and I'm sure she'll get over it eventually. We need to grow up anyway--now we can move on without this obligation. And whipping ourselves over it is pointless because it's not even considered ignoble to do.

What the fuck were we supposed to do? Continue fucking her when there will almost certainly be better options in the future? We can't afford to be tied down yet, and she has no obligation to stay in Canton. Waifufags make me sick, and the previous haughty option was just stupid. It's not needy and weak to focus on your fucking obligations and appreciate the education.

Obviously some of the anons scolding us have never been in a relationship, if you think feeling sorry for yourself for having sex once or having sex every night are the only two healthy ways to approach this.
>>
>>3279502
It’s because of the reasons for being noncommittal, not just the stance itself. Telling her we really like her and had fun, but we care too much about what other people think when she doesn’t give a shit about that. It just looks kind of pathetic from an outsider’s perspective.

This is potentially a great opportunity for growth. Is it common to make vows when standing vigil? Could we make a vow to ourself to be our own person and resolve to put less stock in the opinions of the gossip circles? The timing would be perfect.
>>
>>3279519
I didn't see "caring too much about what other people think" anywhere in the write-in. I see what you're saying, but I think most of the people whining didn't read it all the way through:

>You express your warmth toward Jean in the coming days, but also attempt to convey that due to your responsibilities, you cannot continue lying with her. You do not regret last night, but a knight must not only consider his own desires, after all.

Point out where this says that we're afraid of what anyone will think, or that we can't pursue it because we're afraid of any kind of social implications whatever. We don't regret lying with her, but we need to move on to our other obligations. Brother, vigils, knightly friends, etc. We can't grow attached and we don't have to be repentant for enjoying ourselves once. The option was perfectly fine.

Agreed on the second part of your reply.
>>
>>3279524
Speaking of, I'm not bitching about losing the contact or losing relationship points with Jean. I think that's a perfectly reasonable tradeoff, but I just disagree with how strongly everyone feels toward this. If she's upset that we can't widen her cavity every night and she thinks we're a pussy for it, so be it. We have duties. We can hold fond memories of the night just to spite her if she wants to be a bitter cunt about it, fuck it.
>>
>>3279527
Dude, Jean isn't upset because Emile won't fuck her silly everyday. It's because of how wimpy Emile chose to be.

But let's go in order:

1) she prefers a man of action, which implies she likes a man who is resolute. The write-in basically flip-flops between two positions so that Emile doesn't feel bad about the night.

2) she comes from a place where nobility and such obligations are non-existant. Why should she care about Cantonian social rules? Why should she accept them as an excuse when Emile clearly had no problem the night before?
>>
>>3279527
>>3279552
Honestly I wouldn't mind if it was portrayed as a clash between the ethics of different cultures but I disagree with the perception that the write-in was somehow fence-sitting in nature.
Secondly the original haughty option was a atrocious choice in the first place. Telling someone that isn't somehow having balls; it's just being stupid. 'Oh yeah after reflecting on it having sex with you was actually a sin so yeah that's the end of it.' Like what? If anything that should have pissed her off more.
>>
>>3279502
Yeah i agree here it feels like we are bing punished based on a incorrect interpretation of the write in.

I dont see what's wrong with saying we were drunk had fun. But i actually cant do this and it was just a one night stand, without self fagillating. If anything tracker Jean should respect that more then an immidatly regretful person. That shows no spine.
>>
>>3279552
What's wimpy about having a one-night stand? We never assured her it would be anything but.

Secondly, she doesn't have to care about Cantonian social rules but she's in our country. Why should we accept what she cares about when we're haughty and we've only ever known our own traditions?

There is no excuse, there is no fence-sitting. We had a one-night stand, now we return to our duties. This woman is not our mistress and we frankly don't need to care about what she wants.
>>
>>3279165
I'm glad I voted to reject her and feel regretful about sleeping with her even after the vote was recast. Continuing our tryst just meant pumping her some more and then dumping her anyway. Having an actual partnership wasn't going to happen because most players were against it.
>>
>>3279564
Yeah this exactly. If tracker Jean is upset by this she cam honestly go fuck herself.
>>
>>3279557
It is fence-sitting in nature. You want to end a relationship soon but you do it through tepid excuses that the other party doesn't care about.

And the first haughty option was perfectly fine. Having the balls to admit you gave into lust and would not do it again takes some courage, which she would have respected at least.

>>3279561
The interpretation is perfectly correct, whoever wrote worded it like shit though.

You could have said something like this:
> It was a moment of weakness on your part, one that you can't help but remember fondly in your most private thoughts. You do not lie with Miss Jean again.
and you would have gotten your way.
>>
>>3279572
No it wouldn't cause her cultural attitudes towards sex are similarly different from Emile's.
>>
>>3279570
Oh and the write in was basically "I don't regret lying with you, but at the same time I don't want a romantic relationship because of the obligations I broke to sleep with you."

We never should've slept with her in the first place since she was a peasant, but players didnt keep it in their pants and replaced their brains with their dicks.
>>
>>3279524
It’s the whole bit about having duties and not being able to focus on what we want because of who we are. It’d make sense to someone from Canton, but she’s foreign and thinks the entire concept of avoiding being with someone over made up social conventions is spineless. In character, we may or may not agree with her, but that’s just how she sees it. It makes a lot of sense from an outsider’s perspective. Generally speaking, voters didn’t focus on how she would see things and this is the result.
>>
>>3279590
The thing is the other haughty option comes across as the same thing to me. If she comes from a culture where extra/pre-marital sex is like normal or with no stigma attached and then someone tells you 'Yeah actually sleeping with you is a sin so I'm stopping it' it would be just as incomprehensible to a Wastelander as this issue about our marital obligations as a noble.
>>
>>3279564
>What's wimpy about having a one-night stand?
Nothing at all. I called wimpy the way Emile acted after the fact, which is completely different.

> Secondly, she doesn't have to care about Cantonian social rules but she's in our country
Which means that she has to respect laws, not customs or the Cantonian sense of honor.

> Why should we accept what she cares about when we're haughty and we've only ever known our own traditions?
If you wanted to be so tough, why did you choose such a wishy-washy option? The first Haughty seems much more in line with this kind of thought.

Unless you were just trying to look good or have your cake and eat it too.

>>3279588
Uh uh. Tell that to Forgotten, see what he says.

Because if you can't understand from what he wrote so far that she appreciates a man who can take a stance, then nothing short of the QM himself will convince you.
>>
>>3279572
I still don't understand where this "excuses" stuff is coming from. We never made an excuse. We want to move on.

>>3279590
Please read the write-in. We're not doing anything out of a need to obey social conventions. We don't feel regretful but we have RESPONSIBILITIES. Responsibilities are not the same as social conventions. We have real-world duties beyond fucking her, and we're not going to waste our time self-flagellating either.

People keep trying to make this write-in into something it isn't. Read it again to the letter and tell me where we're rejecting her because we're afraid of what people will think.

>>3279614

>Nothing at all. I called wimpy the way Emile acted after the fact, which is completely different.
How did Emile act? Like he had better things to do, which he does?

>Which means that she has to respect laws, not customs or the Cantonian sense of honor.

Not my point. My point is that we don't have to respect her culture if she won't respect ours.

>If you wanted to be so tough, why did you choose such a wishy-washy option? The first Haughty seems much more in line with this kind of thought.

There's nothing wishy-washy about not regretting sex but moving on. What the hell are you people smoking? What's wishy-washy is having sex then beating ourselves up over it. The other option may create temptation and passion for a person who doesn't even live in our country, so we should avoid in the interests of pursuing our goals as a knight.

>Because if you can't understand from what he wrote so far that she appreciates a man who can take a stance, then nothing short of the QM himself will convince you.

If she thinks fucking her once then focusing on our duties is "not taking a stance," then I would sincerely like for her to fuck off. She sounds like an asshole.

Again, to everyone using buzzwords like "wishy-washy" and "fence-sitter," are we reading the same write-in?
>>
>>3279624
> Not my point. My point is that we don't have to respect her culture if she won't respect ours.
Go ahead then. Don't expect many people to like you though.

> There's nothing wishy-washy about not regretting sex but moving on
But the write-in wasn't about that, just a slight part of it.

You chose to show affection for a girl that you were going to dump anyway. You chose to be a 'nice' guy just to not feel guilt. You chose to claim responsabilities she doesn't about - and let's be honest, which are so vague that they can't be taken seriously right now.

Pilgrimage? Nothing stops Emile from enjoying Jean's company until his departure. Vigil? Hearty choice shows that it doesn't preclude having sex before it. Oaths? Well, they didn't really stop Emile the night did they?
>>
Ok guys. What is done is done. Move on.
>>
>>3279614
>>3279653
I'd like to point out that I voted originally for continuing the tryst as long as it was established it was basically a fling. Barring that since most anons didn't want to have a serious relationship IMO it was better to break off now than later down the line where the sense of betrayal might be so much worse.
And secondly, if she doesn't give a crap about social obligations how the heck is she going to accept having sex with her being a sin and something we're going to do penance for as a valid explanation?
>>
>>3279653
>Go ahead then. Don't expect many people to like you though.
Jean shouldn't get a pass for doing the same thing, then. She has shown absolutely no respect for our culture or values, and we have been nothing but kind to her. I don't feel resentful about it, but if she can't handle our culture's stance on duty then we shouldn't get too involved with her anyway. It sounds like her beliefs are fundamentally opposed to our own.

>You chose to show affection for a girl that you were going to dump anyway. You chose to be a 'nice' guy just to not feel guilt. You chose to claim responsibilities she doesn't about - and let's be honest, which are so vague that they can't be taken seriously right now.

We never showed deep affection, we had a drunken one-night stand. We're not dumping her because we were never deeply involved with her in the first place. We chose to not feel bad about fucking her once. Our responsibilities are not as vague as you claim, we recently solidified several clear goals involving the dragonguard, our brother, and performing vigils. You're still putting words in our mouths.

Pilgrimage? Nothing stops Emile from enjoying Jean's company until his departure. Vigil? Hearty choice shows that it doesn't preclude having sex before it. Oaths? Well, they didn't really stop Emile the night did they?

We shouldn't continue fucking her because we shouldn't regularly give in to temptation. We will grow more attached to her if we continue fucking her. We don't want to be dicks or reactionaries about having sex with her once but we also don't want to get involved in a relationship. And show me where we made an oath to not have sex--Forgotten already told us it is acceptable to have flings that don't result in bastards.

>>3279624
In the interest of avoiding another catastrophic shitstorm, I'll end my rant here. All I wanted to say is that I disagree with Forgotten's (and several smug anons') interpretation of the write-in. I am not upset with the outcome, but I want people to see that Emile did nothing wrong here (Jean's reaction paints her as needy anyway, so we may have dodged a bullet). Emile acted maturely and was frank about his responsibilities. We have nothing to apologize for, and I refuse to believe that there is anything cowardly about asserting that you have to move on. We can't afford to grow attached to someone.
>>
>>3279676
Meant to greentext ">Pilgrimage? Nothing stops Emile from enjoying Jean's company until his departure. Vigil? Hearty choice shows that it doesn't preclude having sex before it. Oaths? Well, they didn't really stop Emile the night did they?"
>>
I was having trouble maintaining interest in this quest due to how inactive it runs along with how many players/how much arguing is involved, but I think this might do it for me. Just seems spiteful. But like I said my investment was already waning so it's whatever.

Good luck with the quest Forgotten. Try not to kill too many kids this time around yeah?
>>
>>3279676
How about I sum up my entire argument.

Every other option in the original vote had something to do with focusing on Jean. We can feel spiteful about what we did with her, we can continue having sex with her every night which is overly indulgent and could lead to deeper attraction and bastard children if it turns into something more, or we could pursue a romantic relationship with her.

Here's what the write-in was clearly meant to be: Move on and don't let this consume your life.
>>
>>3279165
Hey guys what's going on . . . .

Ayup. This sounds about right. For everyone leaving the quest in a huff about this, good riddance. Oh no, people acting like people and not waifus? The fucking horror!

Besides, we have the chance of regaining the contact, we just gotta prove we aren't a little bitch by either wooing her "properly" or by beating her in a horse race.

Good luck with the second one right now, but the first one? I wouldn't vote for it even if it was a guaranteed win anyways.

Guess we'll just have to move on, maybe even accept that it was a shitty way to handle it and grow as a person.
>>
Alright, as the writer of the write in, I feel obliged to atleast give my 2 cents.

I'm basically fine with this result. The original intention of the write was to end the relationship without attaching the baggage of "muh sins" to it. My own personal reading of the write-in basically aligns with >>3279502. It was a one night stand, and we're ending it because we've got other things to do, its not like we promised to keep it up, and I doubt Jean expected a long term thing either.

As for wishy-washiness, I will admit that I am not a great writer and could have probably written it more clearly. However, I also feel its unfair that the idea that Emile is being a pussy because of social obligations and thus flip flopping got stapled onto the write in for no good reason. My intention was to convey that Emile was firmly stopping the relationship, and thats it. I wasnt trying to make a "limp-wristed attempt at maintaining the benefits of the relationship". I dont care about the horse trading contact nor did I want Jean as a companion. This is also why I'm actually okay with the result Forgotten gave us, I just hope he doesnt write it as Emile pussyfooting the issue, and instead the original intention of the write in, which at this point would translate to Emile telling Jean he doesn't want to continue the relationship, and Jean can react however she wants. But whatever its all up to Forgottens discretion.
>>

I promise I'll drop it after this last post.

>We never showed deep affection, we had a drunken one-night stand. We're not dumping her because we were never deeply involved with her in the first place.
The write-in literally said 'You show her warmth but...". If that's not flip-flopping indecisively while giving the wrong impression, I don't know what it is.

>Our responsibilities are not as vague as you claim, we recently solidified several clear goals involving the dragonguard, our brother, and performing vigils.
Aside from the whole cultural baggage deal, none of these currently prevent Emile from lying with Jean. Tepid excuses that a no-nonsense person like her would call bullshit.

> We shouldn't continue fucking her because we shouldn't regularly give in to temptation.
Again, it's the way Emile dumped that soured her, not leaving her after a one-night stand.

> but I want people to see that Emile did nothing wrong here (Jean's reaction paints her as needy anyway, so we may have dodged a bullet). Emile acted maturely and was frank about his responsibilities.
And I believe the exact opposite of that. I hope Anon take this as a chance to mature and think before voting, instead of acting like a brat saying "It's not my fault!"

Keep in mind that the Dragon during Adam and Cain's time was just a young adult. He never stopped growing according to Forgotten and is now an absolute behemoth. He could probably wreck them both if they had a rematch.

Also, Adam kniggas are superior to samefagging edgelords and Cainfags. The write-in was definitely no Adam option, Forgotten would've given us a 1+ Path of Adam if it was. Only Adam options here would've been to either marry her, or not sleep with her in the first place.

It's still fixable with Jean.

A Courtship roll doesn't mean we factually have to court her, just maybe apologize and explain ourselves better about her being our first sexual experience, but that we're out in the world for the first time and we kinda went along with it without thinking of the greater implications.

That we wanted some distance to figure ourselves out, because we respected her and lusted after her but we were still confused about what that means.

But that we're not going to regret what we did with her, just that we aren't sure what we want, or what she wanted out of it. And that made us act like a little bitch to try and let her down easy when we should have recognized that she's a woman who can take care of not just a caravan but also herself and she deserves our respect above our thoughtless concern.

To me, taking responsibility seems more in character than acting haughty, but I get that it’s the opposite for the r9k camp. That’s fine. I can wait until Cathagi. Hopefully the vote will sway a bit more the other direction there.

Is there a non-spaghetti way to talk our way out of this?

Because fuck you I want that Mustang. I hate you all for not just dicking her until we got one.

Pretty simple, less talk more action. Commit to her (or drop it). Anons wanted to play lord with the second son so it’s more likely that this route will just be dropped. It’s just kind of a bummer that the floundering caused such a delay in the story.

Well there's the Horse race option too, so it's not like we still have to pursue a romantic interest.

We could probably come to her with a good shekeling opportunity and she'd be down. Money > Dick.

New thread February Sunday 24th 11:00am AEST.

While Emile didn't handle the aftermath particularly well, I think we can agree that he at least looks back on the night itself fondly. Next thread will commence with readying ourselves for the day-and-night long Vigil at the Church of Adam's Martyrdom. Gif not related.

Apologies fellas, but no thread tomorrow. Nothing to do with the quest but I have a few deadlines coming up and I won't be able to keep to my schedule.

I'll announce a fresh thread on the qtg and twitter, but we're probably not looking at anything earlier than 8th March.
