In the far future, biotechnology advances by leaps and bounds, creating stunning achievements in medical, civil, and military applications. Illness becomes a thing of the past, and genetic modification is as commonplace as cosmetic surgery.

However, like all great advances, unchecked progress and experimentation has led to abuse and corruption. Ultra powerful megacorporations that monopolized the latest biotech have risen to be the great powers of the age, waging secret wars of sabotage, espionage, and deceit to get ahead of each other.

In order to fuel their rampant growth, megacorps develop lethal diseases and viruses, horrific bio-organic abominations, and ever more exotic genetic modifications to both sell to the highest bidder and unleash upon each other.

The rampant proliferation of bioweapons, and the need to contain them, has given rise to a new profession, the BIOWEAPON HUNTER.

You are LEWIS, a Hunter specializing in hunting down biological threats with your T-Doll companion HK!

Honestly, you figured taking a "consulting" job for the RCPD would be a pretty chill and laid back assignment, but it was nothing of the sort. Once you had finally gotten back home, you simply collapsed on your bad through sheer exhaustion.

Then again, Lucina being in charge of the whole thing may have contributed to your fatigue. She could certainly be a slave driver when she wanted to be.

It's already well into the next day when you wake up, your vision cloudy. Ready to greet you is...

"That's not funny, Carol." You mumble as you pull your blanket back over your head. Your sister was always playing pranks like this on you-

However, you feel a sharp pain in your ear for a split second before your crystal skin instinctively kicks in, and you yelp loudly as you're practically pulled out of bed by the ear.

"Honestly, after all this time you should at least have learned how to tell me apart from Carol." Mom grunts, giving you steady glare.

At that moment, the door is kicked in as HK enters, her rifle raised and ready, but hesitates when she sees Mom.

"HK! Stand down!" You say quickly, and she instantly lowers her weapon.

"I detected an abnormal sound." HK explains. "You should have notified me of visitors."

Wait, that meant HK was on alert mode and if that was the case...

"Mom, did you sneak in here?" You groan.

"Old habits are hard to break." Mom shrugs nonchalantly. "Besides, I'm pretty sure they've got surveillance on your front door, anyways, so better safe than sorry."

Yep. Same old paranoid Mom.

"Okay, then what are you here for?" You ask as you rub the sleep out of your eyes. "You don't come visiting unless it's something serious."

"Let's just say, you're going to get a job soon at a nice, remote tropical island." Mom turns away as you get yourself dressed. "Courtesy of your friends in Umbrella."

"I'm guessing it's not an all expenses paid vacation." You grimace.

"Not at all. I don't know the details, but I do know Wesker is going to be there." Mom explains. "He'll be leaving the safe confines of Umbrella HQ, which is the perfect opportunity for me to... talk with him."

"Like TALK talk? Or just shoot him the face talk?" You raise a suspicious eyebrow.

"Whichever one gets the answers I need." Mom says sternly. "Someone's been snooping around old Magic War files, hitting up some of my buddies. This Wesker guy's my only lead right now."

"Are you proposing that you accompany us on this job?" HK asks.

"Something like that." Mom nods.

"Well, it's not like I can say now to you." You groan. "You'll find a way to sneak in with or without us, right?"

"That's my son." Mom grins as she pats you on the shoulder. "Don't worry, sneaking is the second best thing I'm at."

"And the best thing?" You ask, already suspecting the answer.

"Blowing shit up, of course." Mom giggles.

Yep.

"I don't think this is a wise course of action, Lewis." HK notes as her eyes scan Mom. "Something like this would be a breach of professional trust."

"Trust me, HK, pissing off Mom is worse than pissing off any megacorp." You assure her. "Best to just let her do her thing."

"I know what I'm doing, you don't have to worry." Mom smiles and then frowns as she glares at you again and grabs your hand, tracing her finger across your palm.

"Something's changed about you, hasn't there?" She asks grimly.

"I'll tell her when we're ready." You assure Mom. "Not a moment sooner or later."

"Then I'll trust you to know when." Mom nods reluctantly. "But don't go crying to me if you screw it up."

"But isn't that what moms are for?" You counter.

"Fucking hell." Mom groans as she gives a slight grin and waves before sliding the balcony door open and leaping over the railing. HK fidget at the sight.

"My logic circuits still can't quite process that." She remarks.

"Yeah yeah, let's just get going." You sigh.

The apartment was oddly quiet though, and you realize that Carol wasn't around. While she didn't always come over, she did it often enough that the times she was absent were pretty noticeable.

"Oh, uh, I was jut wondering where you went. You're not at my apartment this morning." You say.

"Awwwww, you miss me already? That's so sweet!" Carol giggles. "But anyways, I'm totally fine! I got invited to a big tropical cruise thing with some of my modeling friends so we're out at sea at the moment!"

"Huh, what a coincidence." You mutter, remembering Mom's warning Umbrella would be sending you somewhere tropical.

"What was that?" Carol asks as a loud horn blares in the background.

"Honestly, cruises are overrated in my opinion." You shrug. "Just glorified floating hotels that cost a whole ton more."

"Of course." HK nods. "But that is irrelevant since we are on the clock, aren't we?"

"Ah shit, we're gonna be late." You groan as you remember the time. "Come on, let's get go!"

By the time you reach the office, you can already tell that there was a big job in the pipe, as the Boss is already on the main floor with a big smile on her face. Hank was off on the side grumbling as he was typing away at his desk, filling out a bunch of e-forms as G kept a close eye on him.

"Lewis! There you are!" The Boss says happily.

"Let me guess. We got a big job." You say.

"Wow, it's like you read my mind!" The Boss laughs. "The client's hooked up in the conference room. He wants to talk to you directly about the job!"

"All right, I'm going, I'm going." You nod as you head over to the conference room, HK following you closely.

"Greetings, Lewis." Wesker's electronic face smiles smugly as you enter. "It seems you're doing rather well."

"Never a dull day." You shrug. "So what's this about?"

"Well, there's a certain job that is uniquely suited for your... talents." Wesker starts, his eyes still hidden behind those damn sunglasses. "I'm not sure if you've been keeping up with the business news, but Umbrella has recently bought out InGen and we are currently appropriating all of their assets for liquidation."

"And let me guess, they got a bunch of BOWs sitting around that need to be taken care of?" You sigh.

"In a way." Wesker's smile widens. "You see, one of InGen's revenue streams is based on growing recreations of extinct beasts. However, their business model was rather flawed. Umbrella is interested in InGens intellectual property, but we have no use their silly sideshows and potential liabilities."

The screen then converts into a map, showing a large, tropical island.

"This is Rockfort Island, one of the assets we obtained." Wesker explains.

"Wait a minute..." You narrow your eyes as you get a read of the facilities. "Is that a...?"

"Artificial nature preserve and seaside resort." HK states. "Primary attractions consist of guided tours to view extinct fauna."

"It was rather easy to acquire after some rather tragic accidents in the park." Wesker shakes his head. "We at Umbrella are concerned for the safety of our employees and the public, so the Board has come to the regretful decision to terminate all unnatural life on the island. That's where you come in."

"You're just gonna kill them all just like that?" You pause.

"Please, it's not like these creatures are real animals." Wesker chuckles in amusement. "They are shades, mere imitations conjured deep from a man's imagination. Think of them as nothing more as the BOWs you already exterminate without question."

"You mentioned they were a potential liability?" HK asks.

"Correct. Being made to imitate wild animals as much as possible, the park attractions ended up being just as dangerous as any wild animal." Wesker explains. "The Board has no interest in keeping these creatures alive, and does not have the patience to starve them out. That's where you Hunters come in. Unless you would rather decline?"

"I doubt my Boss would approve of that." You sigh.

"That's the spirit." Wesker nods. "Just as warning, Umbrella personnel will also be on site to survey the island and make an accounting of all of InGen's hard assets located there. Please do not disturb their work, but at the same time to not let any of them come to harm."

"Of course." You reply.

"And, on that note, there's a bit of a more... personal request." Wesker's grin falters for a bit. "Our mutual friend Dr. Vahlen wants to collect field samples of the attractions, especially the more... savage ones. She's specifically requested your escort."

"Got it." You nod.

"And do bring proper protection. The tropics can be a hostile place." Wesker wryly notes. "Until then."

And Wesker's face winks out.

"Hm." You pause to think. "HK, how are you rated for tropical environments? All that humidity can't be good for you."

"As long as my exterior skin remains undamaged, it should be a sufficient shield against unwanted moisture." HK informs you. "And since I have much higher temperature tolerances, I do not require specialized clothing."

You first decide to stop by Nemo's lab. HK was acting a bit strangely lately, and it's been a while since she had a proper checkup, so you figure now was a good time as any to pay a visit to Nemo.

Nemo was practically asleep on her work table with her usual lack of grace. You lean over and softly ruffle her hair to get her attention.

"Morning, Lewis." Nemo mumbles as she rubs her eyes.

"Morning, Nemo." You continue ruffling Nemo's messy hair. "Hey, you think you can do a quick diagnostic on HK?"

"Um, sure thing." Nemo yawns and bats your hand away. "HK, you know the drill."

"Affirmative." HK nods as she settles into her storage coffin, closing her eyes as she goes into debug mode.

"So, is there anything you want me to look for?" Nemo asks. "Otherwise I'm just going to do the usual."

"She's actually been behaving oddly lately." You note as lines of code flood Nemo's work screen. "This might sound a bit crazy, but I think she stalks me when we're not together."

"Hmmmmm." Nemo frowns. "What happened?"

"I'm pretty sure I caught her tailing me when I went out without her." You explain, "Honestly, it's a bit unnerving."

"Hmmmm, okay." Nemo nods. "So that either means there's an unintended fault in her partnership protocols, or it may be something to do with her original mindmap donor. I can fix the former, but I can't do anything about the latter."

"Damn." You sigh.

"Hmmmm, and the diagnostics are showing all systems green and all files intact. As far she's concerned, she working as intended." Nemo frowns. "It may be that we have to monitor her thought processes in real time. I can insert a data collection program in her software to look for abnormalities during the course of her operations."

You glance at the sleeping HK. Was it really right to put a program like that into her?

"If you're thinking about the ethics, please remember that she's a machine. Her entire mind is built on programs and software, so my monitoring tool shouldn't be that different." Nemo explains.

Yeah, but, what if HK found out...?

"I don't think we need to go THAT far." You shake your head.

"Then I suppose the most I can do is keep an eye on her programming." Nemo yawns loudly.

"Hey, I'm just wondering, but are there more than one HK?" You wonder. "I mean, she's a T-Doll after all. Maybe it was a clone watching me?"

"That would honestly be kind of weird since she's still a prototype model. She's essentially one of a kind at this moment." Nemo shakes her head. "Buuuut, then again, I can't rule that out as a possibility."

You sigh as you look at the complex data on screen and HK's sleeping form. Just what was going on with her...

>And that's it for tonight! The thread will continue on Saturday so be sure not to miss it!

>Are there multiple HK units?
Most likely, she's the latest model from Toha and it would be a waste of resources to only make one of her design.

>Could that have been another following us for some reason?
What reason would another HK have to specifically follow Lewis? Other HKs should start with a template that allows bonding to whoever their new operator is, not a specific one over and over. And we haven't seen any evidence of T-Dolls using Dummy Links in this universe either.

"So there were no issues on the diagnostic?" HK asks as your eyes scan the shelves of the armory.

"Nemo told you herself, didn't she? Totally clean bill of health." You assure her, though you yourself wasn't entirely convinced, either.

"True." HK nods. "Though as a T-Doll, I don't really have 'health' per se."

"You should know what I mean, HK." You sigh.

You glance at the armory selections and test lifting them. Your superdense muscle biomod seemed to be working, as most of the weapons felt like cheap plastic toys in your grip. With this newfound strength, you could probably carry two medium sized weapons with plenty of ammo for each, or a single heavy weapon without too much detriment.

Well, since you were going to be going for big creatures, you would need a big gun to take them down. You quickly review all the options, searching for the right weapon.

First, there were the heavy machine guns. Big and unwieldy, but they could lay down a devastating hail of bullets. Pretty good against fast moving targets, will still enough punch to take down tough armored enemies. The belts would be a pain to handle and reload, though.

Then, where were the heavy grenade launchers. Big, magazine fed monsters that could lob 40mm grenades. The range was pretty short compared to a conventional gun, and the minimum safe distance safeties meant it was impossible to use up close. But you couldn't deny the level of boom it could bring to a party.

And finally, there was the Harkonnen heavy rifle you managed to obtain from the BSAA. That monster sniper rifle that fired 30mm armor piercing rounds. It had the lowest rate of fire, but the greatest range, precision, and potential penetration.

You decide that you're going to need some automatic firepower and pick out one of the couple of machine guns you have access to in the armory. You're not actually too sure how the company managed to get these in the armory, or whether its possession of these things was even legal. Then again, your regular line of work barely counted as legal so the whole concern was academic, really.

Meanwhile, HK makes her own pick based on yours, selecting a marksman pattern assault rifle that fired a heavier rifle caliber. A little precision to add to your mass suppression capability.

"All right, looks like we're set." You nod, until you remember Mom. How were you going to get her on the plane with you?

You could potentially just bluff your contacts and say she's a freelance Hunter assisting you. You also knew Artya was contracted to head out too, to help deal with the disposal of all the "attractions". It would probably be easier to have Mom sneak in with Artya, but she'd have to be in on the whole deal.

Or, well, Mom was Mom. She'd find a way herself, you figure.

Oh well, Mom would find a way. She always does, so you weren't too worried.

"We'll have to leave now if we want to make the designated flight in time." HK points out.

"Yeah, yeah, I get it." You nod. "Let's go."

Hank had agreed to give you a ride to the airport so you wouldn't have to worry about your own vehicle. Honestly, it was probably an excuse to get away from the paperwork, but you honestly couldn't really blame him.

As the elevator heads down to the garage level, you wonder if you should let Lucina know what's going on...

You decide to call up Lucina. You figure she's generally in a better mood when she knows what you're up to, even if it does make her fret.

"Not robbing banks I hope, Lewis." Lucina sighs. "What are you up to?"

"Gonna go shoot some dinosaurs for Umbrella." You say simply.

"You know, I wish I could say that I'm surprised or shocked, but I'm somehow not." Lucina sighs.

"Hey, it's outta your jurisdiction, so out of sight, out of mind, right?" You chuckle.

"Yes, so out of mind you went out of your way to tell me about it." Lucina retorts. "Just don't get yourself killed or anything.

"Can do!" You chuckle before hanging up.

"That call didn't seem necessary." HK points out. "Whether Lucina knows about our trip won't affect the outcome of our mission."

"Well, it helps to keep friends informed of what I'm up to." You respond. "Builds up more trust, you see."

"I will make a note of that." HK nods.

"Come on, let's go!" Hank calls out as he honks his horn.

It's a pretty quick drive, thanks to Hank's fast and rather reckless driving style, but you're honestly not too shaken up about it, since it meant you didn't have to listen to his "classic music", which threatened to melt your eardrums.

Soon enough, you're at the airport and being shuttled to a private Umbrella charter plane. No sign or contact from Mom, though. You were starting to feel a bit nervous.

Nah, you think it's best not to risk blowing her cover. At this point, the shuttle reaches the plane, where you see a corporate suit standing at the boarding ramp.

"Ah, we've been expecting you." The suit nods and motions to a pallet on the side. "Please leave your weapons and gear here, and they will be loaded separately."

"Got it." You nod as you set your bag and gun case down in the designated area. HK does the same.

"We hope you enjoy your trip." The suit bows as you head up the boarding ramp.

As you enter the plane, you immediately note that the cabin was pretty spacious, like a first class flight, or maybe even more. The seats were large and spaced out pretty well, providing plenty of legroom. You also note that there were a few other people on the plane as well. No doubt other specialists and big shot Hunters who got hired for the same job. Though, they were spaced out enough that you could find a spot that was comfortably well away from them.

You do a quick scan, and right away, you notice Hunk and SOPMOD at the very back of the plane. It sort of amused you to see how clearly uncomfortable Hunk seemed to be in such classy surroundings, still fully clad in his tactical gear.

Another person that immediately catches your attention is a young woman with short black hair and wearing a bright red dress. You're pretty sure you've never met her before, but something about her reminded you a lot about Carol. Seemingly harmless and innocent on the outside, but it was just a thin veneer to conceal something truly terrifying within.

And finally, you see... Mom, just casually sitting at one of the window seats. Looks like she really did manage to find a way inside...

Well, despite his reputation and his appearance, you were starting to get the impression that Hunk may not actually be that bad of a guy. Well, in your opinion at least. You head to the back of the plane, passing by Mom and pretending not to notice her presence. Couldn't be too sure who might be watching.

"Hey there!" SOPMOD waves, her usual cheerful self.

"Hunk, SOPMOD." You nod to the Umbrella cleaners. "I'm a bit surprised to see you two here."

"It was her idea." Hunk grunts, pointing a thumb to his T-Doll companion.

Hunk just glares at you with his red lensed mask.

"Yeah! Hunk here's just a big old softie!" SOPMOD says cheerfully as she hugs the Umbrella mercenary. "He spoils me all the time!"

There's a low, nonverbal grumble from underneath Hunk's mask.

You're tempted to push it a little further, but decide to err on the side of caution. Hunk didn't get that terrifying reputation of his for being soft on people he didn't like, and you'd rather stay off of that particular list.

Instead, you take a seat just across the aisle from the two, settling into the surprisingly comfy chair. And not a moment too soon, as the plane rumbles as it begins to taxi to the runway in preparation for takeoff.

"So, you like dinosaurs, HK?" You ask her as you think about this rather odd job you've been hired to carry out.

"Insufficient data for a definitive answer." HK remarks. "Seeing as how I have not encountered any dinosaurs or gathered any useful interaction data, I am unable to identify the correct response."

Somehow, you weren't exactly surprised HK wasn't in a particularly talkative mood. However, you're caught off guard when HK asks a question of her own.

"How about you, then, Lewis?" She asks. "What is your opinion of dinosaurs?"

>They're pretty cool.
>Used to get scared by them.
>I sorta grew out of that phase.

"I think they're pretty cool." You say wistfully. "Always loved them when I was just a kid, so it really sucks that I've been put in a job where I have to put a bunch of them down."

"Logically, the attractions in the park can't be considered real dinosaurs, as they share little in common." HK points out. "Yet you seem reluctant to exterminate them when requested."

"I mean, they're close enough. They're still a unique sight." You shrug. "But either way, I do what I'm paid for, even if I don't entirely agree with it."

"I see." HK nods.

HK remains quiet as she stares out of the window. Seemed like she was not interested in talking anymore at the moment.

Well, either way, you were pretty tired out, and these first class airplane chairs were freaking top notch as their cushions practically absorb you. So you don't fight back and let sleep overtake you.

You're just hoping this job won't have hidden complications like all of the other ones. But who were you kidding, something would definitely go wrong, a small part of you was sure of it.

Still, you'll make the best of it. It's all you can do at this point, honestly.

>And that's it for tonight! Next thread will be on Friday, so don't miss it!

Thanks for the thread, boss.

If we do plan on eating dinosaurs, what should we try first?

Either a Triceratops or a Gallimimus.
