No. Yes. Maybe. Everyone is. Hiding away from the sun. The dancing bug died. The other drew the Addled. And the Addled snared the Bartersoul. And now they wait wait wait. Sunfall sun. Larger insect-kin when the sun dies.

Expressive fingers, this masked woman has. Perhaps it makes up for the wooden mask she wears in lieu of a face.

Ah, a path. The Addled are attracted to the rich scent of the cerebovorando, hoping to scavenge the destruction the warriors leave in their wake. Puncture the carcass, and they will come.

The barricades are suffused with vines and choked by the vegetation. They were sharp, once. But with a strong, stable pole one could vault them easily.

In the shadow of the entrance, a lockbox. Traditionally, the Pytherian Legion Gatewatch keeps there the more volatile chemicals for dispersing attention in the night.

This chemicae is playing with captured fire. Burnvines grow in the Greenspan, and one can distil their poison into flames that are far, far too voracious for mundane thermochemical mathematics.

One deft strike and the wind carries a payload of deception. Addled twist in the green haze, then clamber forth, wild eyes dimly glaring at the undergrowth but their noses held high.

A rock is good shelter.

Silas darts in - the senses of other, deeper Addled are distracted by the circles Scarf lazily describes in the breeze and then, one crack of a lockbox, one shove of a lid-- bounty.

The Pytherian Gatewatch of the 12th Legion were well-stocked indeed. Small moss covered dents in the wood are nests for vials of fireglass mixed with some produce by the far halls of the Bonded. There are room for twelve but two are shattered into uselessness, eight are missing, one looks eaten through by some particular voracious form of bug and there... exactly what we might need. One vial of fireglass and an catalyst. Aim, throw, and hold your breath. It is labelled but the environ is not kind to the work of scribes. It cannot be known what the chemical payload is. Knife-smoke? Ice contagion? Thirst-mist?

There are enough inventive ways to warn off those who would snoop at the gates.

They see us. One scavenger jabs filthy hands deep into the carcass of the Cerebovorando while another stumbles towards the rock that Bulvar hides behind. At some unseen single, one Archer rouses from their daze and fires off one long arrow. Bulvar ably blocks it, and suffers little harm.

They'll come for us now! Some distracted by the promise of food, some interested in war. Do we wait or do we strike?

Luckily, old muscle memory means Scryansi kicks at the water before the silt laden stuff floods too far into their lungs.

Less fortunately some thing immediately kicks back and has far, far too sharp teeth. Leeches erupt into a parasitic profusion.

Silas steps back as arrowshafts bloom from the ground. Odd, opaque smoke with a glassy sheen billows from the cracked vial and nothing is heard from the tower above.

One lone Addled with a long spear attempts to give Bulvar a good shove into the water, but the warrior stands firm!

Their spears have REACH 2, and so, will prod and poke at some tactical distance!

Silas stumbles deeper into the vine covered Legio graveyard. Discarded swords litter the ground, along with other, more fleshy detritus. Most have been stripped of usable material and re-purposed. Some spot growing patches on odd, dark fungal bloom. Vines cling cloyingly to the surface of blood-splattered ground and in the shadow of the tower, the air is chill as an heavy, curling smoke fall from above with a faint sizzling that scar the skin and leave odd, white after-images as one moves the head.

Stepping away from combat triggers a dis-engagement slash from the pincer movement. Silas is gruellingly wounded.

Bulvar wards off a probing spear strike but the effort leaves a gash down one arm as they step back. Into the opening comes the Sword-Wielded Addled, swinging wide but the Plankfriend proves its worth by blocking off every blow. In the same furious moment, one grubby leech sucking vital fluids, Scryansi ducks out of reach of a short jab but can't quite duck to avoid the scything swing of a sprinting Addled bursting from the gates of the Legio camp. The tear leaves a wound that bleeds.

Beneath the shadow of the Tower, Silas feels a blunt pummel smack into the back of the skull and the ground and the vine and corpses are so, so soft.

A fire blooms as the Masked Chemicae throws a small clay pot into the fray. One Spear Addled coughs up ash breathed through a pierced lung and, then, finally, finds a fitful slumber. The poor fool is free of the spores and all other concerns.

Coated in liquid fire, none of the Addled are foes worthy of particular concern. Half-blind strikes sweep at the air and cut at the vines but nothing finds purchase. From the Legio Post, one rallies and streams forth while another, the Spear-Wielder, stumbles back, soundless mouth opening and closing, until finally they can scratch of the layer of burning fire and refocus.

Well, that has them on the back foot.

. . . A wet, slithering gurgle emanates from the cave-mouth we left behind. Something from the Pit, come to give chase?

The Addled may have designs on our souls but they lack the valiance in arms to extract their toll. Scryansi shifts and finds hard footing beneath the clinging vines and then, with a start, launches forward. The blunt arrow that smacked into their rib but a moment ago only smarts slightly . . .

With a splash of murky water and the sudden appearance of a flash-flood of leeches, the Addled tries to splash and scrabble at the edge to claw its way out of the yawning maw. No success . . .

Form inside the deeper cave system a wet, crunching rolls like a wave from the dark. Something snapped.

Scryansi steps past a probing strike while Paran has less luck in warding off the attentions of the remaining Addled.

Now that their numbers are lessened, we can take in the haggard state of their equipment. The vacuity in their eyes. Who-ever directs their number in hunt and in feeding is not present among these angry, upset upstarts. This is just a remaining honour guard for a camp of dead Legio, left to rot in the wind and the rain.

With a tenebrous flickering of half light, the Wild Chemicae gestures at Silas broken form and the air itself seems to congeal, sliding sideways for a moment. The Chemicae puts as stopper unto a small sphere.

Silas wakes with a pounding headache, metallic knife-smoke remnants clinging to the inside of their throat. The slivers of metal grins faintly against each other with every breath.

A few sparse breaths clutched from the wind. Enough to keep fatigue at bay.

The legio outpost is bears all the regalia of soldiers on parade ground display, if one but ignores the stains and the corpses. They look peaceful in their own way. The vines are wrapped around them, growing over them, growing from from them .Some appear to have burst apart from the inside as some odd windflung seed took deep root in their guts and wormed its way up and out and free. Scavenged detritus litter the ground and the dead bear a resemblance to those we have sent to join them, here, to rest among the corpses.

An assumption, then. The Addled and the Legios here are all of a kind, and the corpses that litter the ground are simply those Addled that - sunfed and watergorged - finally lay down to blossom.

Most of the Legio Camp appear decrepit. There is not much armament here but avaricious eyes can glance a few odd bits of likely scavenge.

Scarf drops from their little trap with alacrity. Silas avoids a concussion by dent of effort but in scrabbling away from the falling bartersoul, Silas feet punches through the dry ribs of a lone carcass. The spindly bones drag against their shoes...

This man here looks less serene than his fallen peers. Hacked apart with great violence. Scraps of the standard half calcified above is draped across his fallen form. Time and vines have eaten into the cloth the man wears, and it was never armor, but it appears authorative. A faint memory. A tinge of a recollection . . . Did Silas know this fallen?

Presupposing you don't miss in such a way as to make your effort entirely in vain, then yes, that is the nature of things. One on harm, two on Solve. This is why raising intention is good.

Should there be a need for passive defence or passive knowledge acquisition or such, your stats also come in. Everyone resists for their Resist against problems, innately, and crafted equipment is constrained by solve.

But it does vary slightly, depending on tools. Try to harm someone with a bag of wet cloth and it'll come out as .5 Harm. Other equipment might read:

Something boils from the depths, all endless claws and sweeping baleful eyes and hate. It smashes aside a rock with one titanic sweep of a tail raises itself on far too many hindlegs, odd sensory organs ravaging the air for trace of its escaped prey.

Silas feels an odd dragging moment of vertigo as the past and the present mix --and-- was this something that-- the beating heart of the Facility pumped corrosive lights to the anchors to maintain the delicate balance of possible and potential that the Theurges required for their craft. It is not an easy thing to stitch an idea while-cloth into being. Take the humble Spitescorp. A capricious scavenger, prodigious in its malice, magnanimous in the festering hate it is willing to share with all it encounter, fortified in dense layer of organic armour and yet - for all the wonders of its millennia tested design by the inventive cruelty of nature - clearly flawed.

Far too small for one. And why did the forges of the jungle see fit to stop at one claw when more would do? And the carapace here, at the neck-joint, so perilously thin.

Ah.

We find ourselves at a threshold between danger and uncertain safety. The other side is deeper jungle and odder green wildland but we have a mute guide and a scarf-wrapped wanderer.

1023 has a stare contest with a fashioned visage of bark that they notice now is crudely in the shape of a cerebovorando warrior caste head. The mask and the woman beneath it is still. Then - the Wild Chemicae nods once and takes a half step back. Paran picks up the bow. Victory?

Silas looks up at the corpse-strewn outpost tower and its proud punctured standard. The Legion builds long and strong but many hours in harsh winds and this odd environment has eroded the stout imperium of this little outpost. One could bring it down, with fire and explosive force but it would take tremendous munitions. And we have none to spare. Latrans barks a half sudden sound like a laugh but too high pitched and rummages through deep pockets. Perhaps they have some device?

Silas remembers[/i] - this tower was built but the wood on the eastern side, there - yes! - flawed, just slightly, just enough to need extra reinforcement.

It could be done.

Scarf makes a dash for the far lockbox nested against a rock and flings it open. Scryansi sprints to catch up with the vanguard formed by Bulvar, who each make it safely away from the prying multitude of eyes of the thing.

Paran finally replaces the Cerebovorando with themselves, leaving behind a shucked corpse and scratching into the seed-bearing wind with fresh new hands.

Well.

A sun rolls briefly through the Outpost of the 10th, ash-specked winds lacing through the corpses. Debris flies. Latrans ducks, rolls with the shockwave - the thing rears back on sharp hind legs claws digging effortlessly into the dirt below.

A dagger of water has cut through the rock here in erratic pulses. The trees loom, whispering in the wind to each other of arboretums intent. We shelter in the shadows they provide and try to patch together our hamstrung memories.

The Wilder led us here, bleeding from a score of fragmentation scars. She has said little since. From beneath the mask an occasional half-sob is all.

Further away from the Pit the air is different. The first full lungful of easy breathing we have had in recent recollection, no burning tinge of invasive intent borne by the air. We can wash away the blood. Scarf produces a flint and - after some bumbling - ignites a small fire to shred the shadows.

Quiet and peace. A moment to collect ourselves.

It's a rather rare thing for even Scarf to feel the rattling thunder of terror in these old weatherworn bones.

Thank you. It isn't every day one acquires a pet portfolio of half-lost Pytherian soldiers. Rattle your little memory stocks. What were you doing in the Pit of all places? The poor Addled took Scarf for a spot of spelunking, and none too kind at the grabbing either!

Now we find ourselves in some firewashed spatial uncertainity. Admittedly we are rather lost. Perhaps our quiet friend with the mask can guide us to their local village for a chance of resupply and the warm embrace of civilisation. After all this rope swinging a well-stuffed straw mattress and wicker-chair is high on Scarfs list of desires.

But . . . One would be a poor host at this shadow-sheltered copse if one did not offer a spot of delicacy to guests and wanderers. Share a secret!

Buzzsoul cover the intricacies of all the innumerable little agents that slave to keep the ecosystems of the world the way they are.

It is also called Chitinsoul or Carapaceheart or a host of other names. The more sterile label applied by the VSE is Entomotheurgy. It allows those with the steel soul for it to command and become like the insect-kin that crowd the world. It is the domain of poisons, adaption, specialisation, scents, stigmergy and a thousand tiny crawling eaters.

Use it to inflict confusion, compel scuttling creatures to do your bidding, adapt to situations and learn about anything that crawls.

Meanwhile, Close Combat covers rending claws and furious fists. Most people looking to perform violence insist armaments make it easier. A brave, foolish few prove them wrong on occasion. Hand to hand technique and brawling with any useful bodypart. Close Combat covers the ability to take things apart with your (not so bare?) manipulators or hands.

This is where the problem becomes more clear if we think of things in terms of outcome.

1:

Works once as a reaction on next event. You get your Alacrity x your Secret as rolled dice, hitting on 1-40, critting as usual, each hit being a stack of Poison. This gives you immediate high-burst response as a normal reaction.

2:
>Stance: Roll [x] Alacrity v Buzzsoul to Adapt, Poisonous Reaction

Hits are +1% on Poisonous Reaction. People that strike you and roll within the special rating trigger the response. As a Stance, you enter into it and maintain with 1 Alacrity. This doesn't give you a dicepool as with a normal reaction, and so, naturally, you have less consistent response but maintaining 6% Poisonous Reaction means those who attack with ill intent have a chance of suffering.

Layers with a Imbuement. Trigger later for 1 Alacrity. Maintain with 1 Alacrity. This is effectively a delayed action as you imbue yourself with the capacity to do something and unleash it at a later time. It gets you the best parts of 1 and 2 but consumes your alacrity at a prodigious rate and slows you down as you maintain the potential.

Both the Stance and the Imbuement would count as a Condition, giving you a natural limit to how much you can prepare. Because they come from the same source (buzzsoul) the condition is on the same track.

The above is fully internalised within Buzzsoul, as you cloak yourself in poison and carapace. If your intent is to combine both Woeheart and Buzzsoul so you get two with a special trigger, that requires combining multiple Secrets and so is a bit more of action. You need to weave both separately.

It would go like this:

1: Spend Alacrity on Buzzsoul [ Generate Poison]
2: Spend Alacrity on Woeheart [ Bind poison to respond to Wounds]

That means you could create a stance by mixing your secrets.

1: Generate Poison Response.
>You get 5 Hits. 5%
2: Bind Poison Response to trigger on Wounding.
>You get 4 Hits. The stack is converted and 1% poison is lost.

The slightly more involved way of doing this final combination is because multiple Secrets influence each other, but you very rarely roll Secret + Secret. Separate domains.
