Following a cold war gone hot, many years have passed since the theory of Mutually Assured Destruction was proven incorrect, that mankind was infact capable of ending their entire existence as they knew it. In the years past, radiation has subsided, only leaving areas like capitals and military zones wholly inaccessible even with top of the line protection.

With the vast expanses of Europe, infantry have become seldom seen, used only for assaulting towns and villages. The tanks rule these lands, with plenty left after the bombs fell, the steel beats are plentiful and very common, and even deadlier.

As for states and government, several nation states have risen from the fallout, all with their own codes and laws. However, no matter how high tensions may rise, wars are very uncommon, as the memories of the nukes are still fresh in the minds of those old enough.

As wars are uncommon, the armies of these nations tend to be minimal, leaving bandits to roam the lands nearly freely as they please. As a result, mercenaries have become an extraordinarily common sight, to where the nations have organized licensing and mass radio frequencies all for their by-contract warriors.

The industry of this world revolves around the tank. If you see a repair shop, it is for tanks. If you hear an engine churning down the road, it's either a tank, some treaded IFV, or a truck hauling stuff for the former. Towns do not have parking lots for cars; they have parking lots for multi-ton war machines.

You, are Edward Greengold. At the age of 18, young men are expected to become the most common trade of the land: A tank mercenary. Today, is your 18th birthday. Rising out of bed, you quickly get ready, slipping on your dad's fleece and leather jacket; the American 2nd Tank Division patch still on it's shoulder. Stepping outside the house and into your workshop (really a converted small aircraft hanger), you look upon your tank, it's cover still worn.

Judging by the size, it is a

Rubbing your eyes free of dust, you place your hands on your hips and smile.

Before you stands an M60 'Patton'. Just a year ago you had discovered her in the graveyards outside of Paris, covered in moss and surrounded by tanks further gone. To your surprise, she was intact for the most part, the years showing their wear and tear regardless. Your smile grows as you recall passing Johann a few hundred francs to tow it all the way back. The learning was tough, but fortunately these things tend to be simple.

Though, one man does not a tank crew make.

Patting the glacis of the M60, you turn on your heels and pull the doors of the garage open, fetching the keys for the jeep from the shelf and heading into town.

A short, maybe five minute drive later, you see the town of Vimoutiers as you crest a hill. Saluting the Vimoutiers Tiger 1, you roll your shoulders as you come to a stop next to the post office, eyeballing the buildings across the street. Like the old fables of knights and cowboys, the saloons are a good place to start finding a crew. Though, you're not sure if you'll be taken seriously if you're not registered as a mercenary at the time; fortunately, next door lies the town's AMO, or Armored Mercenary Outpost. Hm.

AMO wins.

You roll your shoulders inside your jacket, turning towards the AMO building as you cross the street. Seriously, recruiting people for a tank that's not even properly registered yet? That would've been dumb. The bell atop the door rings as you step inside, the secretary behind the counter turning around, her firey red hair flipping just a bit.

"Heya! Ya' here to register summin' new?"

Raising your brow a bit at whatever the hell accent that was, you nod.

"Sweet!" She cheers, turning around and opening a rusty filing cabinet. She turns back around just as fast, slapping a small pack of papers down on the counter.

"Let's see uhm...."

"Pen!" She calls out as it pops into her mind, fetching one from a 1968 French Winter Olympics coffee mug. Handing it to you, you click it, and start filling in the easy stuff. Name, check. Tank, check. Callsign. Hm. You scratch at your chin with the end of the pen, sucking on your bottom teeth before penning in:

'Snake Eyes', you write down. Sounds cool, but not edgy enough to be made fun of. At least as far as you think.

Holding the papers upright and tapping them against the desk, you hand them back in to lady behind the counter, who promptly turns them around and reads them over.

"Everything looks good! You're all registered! Whenever you get a crew member just send 'em in for Snake Eyes!"

Nodding, you turn on your heels, walking by the Tiger once again, saluting once again as well. No one knows how the tradition of saluting the Tiger started, but not saluting it was somewhat of a faux-pas.

The musty air of wood and beer fills your senses as you step into the bar. The Snapped Tread marked the social center of mercenaries passing through, and tankless crewmen looking for work.

Back to the original subject, if we do find something that can't penetrate us then trying to run it over is fine by me but aren't even the post-war light tanks zippy and carrying 90mm guns? That is probably dangerous for our rear or side armor but I'm not entirely sure

M60A1 had no real armor on the rear or sides. its construction material obviously gave some protection, but the actual protection package was frontal armor and turret only.

The bartender, Chris, gives you a wave then goes back to washing the glass in his hand. Taking a pen from another mug, you grab a piece of paper and hastily scribble something out.

'4 HIRE
Crew for M60 Patton
Good shares
Gunner, Driver, Loader
Ask Chris for info'

Pinning it to the rather large corkboard, you take a step back, looking over the other notices.

'LOST CAT
Responds to Spots'

'CONVOY PROTECTION
From Vimoutiers to Hershweiler-Pettersheim
Fuel and expenses covered
CBRN not needed
Contact AMO'

'I can lengthen your barrel
go to Johann's shop for upgrades and ammo'

'Demolitions needed outside of Vimoutiers'
Contact details follow after that title.

You audibly suck on your teeth before heading to the counter, glancing over your shoulder at the tables and booths that dot the bar's interior.

"So Chris, you know anyone working for work?"

He sets the glass down, moving on to the next one with a nod.

"Yup, there's a few."

He points over to a scruffy looking man sitting alone, nursing a tall mug with several around him.

"That's Taylor Boucher. No tank experience, but he just got laid off from the shipyards and had to move back home ta' here. He'd probably make a good loader."

He points in another direction at a well cut and well trimmed blonde man.

"Jean-Pierre Durand. Bit of a posh prick, but he's one helluva gunner. Served in some brigade, dunno what happened after."

"Booth next to him? That's Dieter Carius. Another gunner. German o'course, but I don't know much about it. Seems cool, though."

He points over at a table of three, two men and one woman.

"Left to right, that's Claude Allard, Jean-Henri Caton, and Diana Baranov. Yeah, I know what you're thinking, Russian bastard and all, but she just carries the name as far as I know."

"Thanks." You say to Chris, giving him a parting nod before heading to the table with the three. Their conversation pauses as they collectively look up at you, your hand resting on the top of the free chair. Glancing between them, you pull it out and take a seat.

"I hear you're crew without a tank. Edward Miller."

The awkward expressions turn to warm smiles.

The one Chris pointed out as Claude grins widest, showing a perfect row of bright white teeth as he brings a comb through his hair.

"Claude." He states in a somewhat thick Belgian accent. "I'm a loader. Served with the Le Fayettes before everyone split."

Up next was the Russian woman. "Diane." She says coldly, blonde hair visible from under an old baseball cap.

"Driver. Was conscripted in Russia as a T-54 driver. Escaped. For hire."

You suck on your teeth, tapping two fingertips on the table before looking over again.

Jean-Henri nods as you visually acknowledge him.

"Jean." He says, holding his hand out for a shake. You mentally note a firm grip.

"I'm a driver. Served in the same tank as Claude here 'till the Le Fayettes went bust."

As you open your mouth to retort, she replies back.

"Four crew tank. Sure you can find someone who do less than quarter."

Examining her, her face is stone cold, not a sign of weakness to be found.

You glance between Jean and Claude, who look similarly surprised as you are. Jean leans over, whispering into Claude's ear. The French loader shakes his head, mouthing 'what the fuck?' before Jean leans in again. This time, Claude nods.

"Excuse me, if you will." Starts Jean.

"Claude and I will join you, if you give us both 20%."

You couldn't help but crack a smile, looking to Diane expectantly.

That smile fades as you see her as steadfast as ever.

"I stand 30. Excuse my French, but Le Fayette split for reason."

Upgrades for the tank is a worthwhile investment that may be pretty important on an evolving battlefield so we can't go throwing money around lightly, but if we test her first I'll agree to giving her the 30% for now. But that uncompromising attitude I can't help but feel is going to make her a problem.
>>
>>3296101
Maybe we can get her to agree to paying half of steering and driving upgrades too?
>>
>>3296143
Any engine or suspension improvements for sure.

Their history might be sus but they know their positions and we know they have history. More importantly they work well together, or know eachother already. Meanwhile Diane is asking for more than a fair share and shit, she's literally admitted she's a conscript.

Tied? Ya'll. I'll come back to this in the morning. If it's still tied then I'll flip a coin and I dunno, post a webm of it or something.

Sorry, but as your IDs only have one post I'm going to have to not trust these votes. I hope this doesn't deter you from following the rest of the quest, however.

So you're going with Diane? These above are the votes with at least two posts. You linked to a one id post.

Your tapping fingertips come to a dead stop on the table as you suck on your teeth, making a 'tsh' sound.

"Jean, Claude, get your stuff packed."

You calmly say, not breaking eye contact with the Russian.

The Belgians smile, giving eachother a low five as they get up and head out of the bar, them both giving a friendly shoulder slap as they pass behind you.

However, to your chagrin, her expression doesn't change one bit. Still that iron lip, that cold, nearly dead stare.

Your own expression turns somewhat awkward as she develops a frown, her brow furrowing.

"You'll regret this." She practically curses under her breath, slamming her fist down onto the table hard enough to make the empty glasses jingle a bit on the hardwood.

You awkwardly chuckle as your eyes dart around, slowly backing your chair up and standing up. Your chuckling continues until you push the chair all the way back in, and briskly walk back over to Chris.

"You see that shit?"

"Let me guess, she demanded 30?"

You nod.

"She's been pulling that all week. Dunno if she realizes that's why she hasn't been picked up for a crew yet. The Belgians are good men, 's far as I can tell ya'."

"Yeah, she ripped on their old brigade too." That elicits a low whistle from Chris, glancing up from the glass he's wiping.

"No shit?" You nod.

"Damn. Might have to keep an eye on her."

You nod again, looking over at her. You instantly look away when she makes eye contact.

"So, they were a driver and a loader right? Who's your first pick for gunner?"

Jean-Pierre Durand.

Looks like we're talking to the German.

Apologies, it's been the better part of 2 years since I've ran one of these; not to mention it being late in my timezone. I apologize for the mistake when counting votes, but it'd set us back hours of waiting for votes if I were to reset it all back to that point. We're three days in and we don't have our crew sorted, I'd rather get this out of the way so the real fun can begin.
>>
>>3297754
Good luck then. I'm dropping out.
>>
Additionally I'm going to be out for a hot minute, so I'll leave the votes open.
>>
>>3297754
All you had to do is rewrite a post not the whole quest.

Why not get players to adopt trips after a "break in" period?
>>
>>3295982
What the fuck are you smoking? You realise that every half modern tank, including current 3rd gen MBTs have thin RHA side armor, just like the m60. The leo 1sa have the least, the m60s and centurions both have 3", the t54/55/62s have 80mm, which is fucking nothing. Thats also damn near what t90s, leo2s and m1s have... The only composite side armor on any tanks are thin skirts on chally 2s and m1s, turrets are a different matter.

As I've got work for the next bit, I'll close the thread here. Hope everyone had fun, and see you all in two weeks!
>>
I'm not feeling too good about this quest.
>>
>>3300328
A quest that hasnt had a chance to get into the meat of its premise? Im kinda glad we didn't go for diane, she sounds like a bitch who wouldn't fit in the tight knit family that a tank crew is. Also it's not like we're being railroaded or the future is set is stone, im happy with things as long as the QM doesnt make a mess of it with her potentially in the future.

>>3299473
Looking forward to it, can't wait to get into action.
>>
>>3300426
More so the 1 post id's influencing decisions, such as yourself, and the QM's blatant disregard for accountability. We is a lot of people and as far as I can tell, you haven't participated in this thread except to passive-aggressively attempt to find meaning in my post.

yeah ok I've totally lost my trip, hopefully posting OG art helps prove it's me. anyway hello OP how are you, did you pick up the little setting primer I wrote? is this actually the same universe? I can't believe someone actually remembers tank hunters quest.
>>
>>3300458
Wow the hypocracy in this post is astonishing, also, I only found this quest after this thread was done, timezones and work mean I dont have the luxury of checking the catalog every 5 mins so if you wanna be that way fo sit on a chainsaw.
>>
>>3300736
Tank hunters is a damn cool setting that needs more quests in it.
>>
>>3300736
Yeah, I did! Sorry if you feel a bit plagiarized, haha. It's the same universe pretty much, though set much sooner after the war for reasons I will not reveal until later. It's really, really cool to see your blessings!
>>
>>3300914
Yo OP, what kind of upgrade/mod paths will there be? Will it be more focussed along the different lines of tanks, like going through the M60A2/A3 etc, or will we see and be able to upgrade with things like the Magach 7s and similar programs like the M60 2000 or the Sabra series? Or even more individualized like putting guns/engines and such on tanks that never had them but could plausibly fit them?
>>
>>3301006
A little column A, a little column B, a little column C. All depends on what we can scavenge out there.
>>
>>3300914
Little bit hard not to feel plagiarised, but I'm flattered more than anything else. I realise I haven't updated that setting primer in four years, and it's rather bare on the ground, and I apologise. If you ever want to hear all my ideas on the setting hit me up on twitter or pass me a discord name or something. I had a lot more on things I wanted to explore in this post-apoc world.
Or you can do your own thing, I don't mind that either. I'll definitely follow this quest either way.

>>3300833
One of these days, either when I finish my current quest or I get to a point where I can actually handle two at once, I'm going to come back to Tank Hunters. I plan on having an actual system on tank upgrading and scavenging by then, if not one for combat. Tank Hunters is one of my babies, and I still come back to that setting document every few weeks or so between everything else. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long.

We are an American, two Belgians, and a German. Is there no language barrier? Are we all speaking English?
