Tournament Fighter Quest #5

The video of your victory over Belladonna hits a million views two days later.

Your fans are growing in number, and you have seen several websites spring up with your name on them. Erupting Dragon has its own fan forums and you are being mentioned, both by people who hate you for hurting their precious idol singer and people who love you for the same.

Your next fight is in two days, against Rusty McDougal, a spirited young man who has competed in both Erupting Dragon and several European racing circuits. The kid is said to have almost prescient reflexes. You can at least count on him not turtling up like Belladonna. He’s infamous for losing easy matches by getting ahead of himself or being overly aggressive. That said, he’s self-taught, which is almost unheard of at this skill level.

You’ve grown from your experiences though.

Block?

+1 block

I also like the idea. Since we're not in combat, I'd like a few more votes for anything, although if enough time passes with just two, I'll call it there.
>>
>>3302769
+2 block
>>
>>3302769
Why not increase kick or punch?
>>
>>3303504
Now that I think about it, this is actually a very good idea right here. Raising our block just puts our block on the same level as our dodge, except still worse because block goes down by one every hit.

That said, imma just wait for five votes on any decision.
>>
>>3305074
Hell, when even the QM questions the vote you know It's bad.

>>3302769
Throwing In behind

>+1 Punch

Punch related moves should still benefit from this too, which means better Justice Punch.

I feel like normally I wouldn’t but then exhausted, distracted QM from yesterday recommended something that Older, Wiser QM of today realized was a bad recommendation.
>>
>>3302769
+1 punch
>>
>>3305251
Ah fuck I missed this yesterday.

I'll support the punch for now but might change if it's not closed in several hours and I can consult the pdf.
>>
>>3302769
Changing to +1 punch then
>>
>>3305400
I count five there. I’ll update the sheet when I’m back at my home base.

It is absolutely hilarious to compare this shit to the first thread. The first one was very fast relatively popular and you're at 15 posts in like 4 hours

Anons who don't understand the system probably dropped out.
>>
>>3306180
True, but I still don't understand the system and I'm still here. I like the concept and the writings entertaining. That's all I need.
>>
>>3306157
You’re not wrong. I think I’m taking it a bit slower too. That may just be from having a lot going on this week.

Anyway, expect an update or two before the day is out.

You have two days to prepare yourself for your match against Rusty. Last time, you remember feeling regret at not having connections that could have helped you put Belladonna's headset out of commission. You still took her down, but it was tougher.

That said, you also have plenty you could still do.

>Go around Hong Kong, seeing the sights
>Research Rusty McDougal on the internet
>Change up our fighting outfits
>Check out what music is on Belladonna's MP3 player
>Find a gym and get into an exercise routine
>Research your fandom online and try to find a way to make them useful
>Look for ways to make a public appearance and secure some connections
>Go get drunk and remember your master's teachings
>Find someone to beat down

So it seems we have three very popular options. I think all three could be done in one day. We’ll start with the easiest: checking out Belladonna’s MP3.

Cycling through the songs, it is...not what you were expecting. Not a jpop single in sight. Instead there is a variety of songs, ranging vastly in genre from classical Spanish guitar to death metal. You try listening to it for a bit but the mood whiplash makes it a headache. They Might Be Giants was never meant to be an opening act for the Nutcracker Suite.

You set it down and start on your next task: doing some research on Rusty.

You start with a few videos. His style takes inspiration from boxing and Muay Thai, but he spaces his opponents like he’s using Hapkido, staying far closer than comfortable. While he’s within this range he seems to get a burst of energy, able to strike more often than normal.

Now for the tricky part. Making some kind of public appearance. After doing a bit of research on the internet, you know of a few ways this can be done.

There is a formal dinner held every tournament that is usually attended only by the top 8 fighters, people who come back every year. Newer fighters aren't barred from entry, exactly but you've seen it go poorly with the newer fighters being looked on as wannabes. On the other hand, causing a little chaos at the party could get your name out there, but then you risk taking on several top-tier fighters at once.

Another option is to schedule an interview and let the journalists do a piece on you. They have freedom to sway their opinions any which way they want on this, so if you do it, you need to be careful about which journalist you contact.

Wait...you know a journalist. Is she right for this one?

>Crash a fancy dinner
>Set up an interview with Emma Richards
>Research journalists and pick a better choice than Emma

Looks like a majority to me.

Contacting Emma turns out to be simple enough. You call the station, mention your name, and ask to speak with her.

“Natalya?” That familiar voice comes on the phone. “It’s so good to hear from you! You’ve been busy. I watched your most recent fight like 5 times, and I heard from a friend you took on a few pickpockets last week?”

She does sound excited to see you but that last part surprises you. You initially wrote off Emma Richards as just another ditzy American news girl, but apparently she has some connections and sources.

There’s no predicting how a story about frontier justice like you pulled would get portrayed on air. Although so far, Emma’s done nothing but help you...

You meet with Emma at a local restaurant. The place caters to tourists so the menu has some English, but the translation is iffy. You order what you're reasonably sure is roast duck with sauce.

Emma effortlessly orders her food in fluent Chinese.

"So, it's been a week or two since I last saw you. So far it looks like your fights have been going pretty well. What do you attribute your success to?"

>"I carefully plan a strategy for each opponent, then use their weaknesses against them."
>"What can I say? I guess I'm a natural born fighter."
>"You meet ferocity with ferocity, fire with fire. It's like facing off with a bear. Showing any fear will end you before you begin

“What can I say? I guess I’m just a natural born fighter.” You say. You feel you’re giving off the confident feel you were going for. Hopefully Emma buys it, and her viewers too.

“What got you started on this road? What made you want to be the best?”

This one’s trickier.

>”Bullies used to mess with me and my brother. I got stronger to defend us, and found I like fighting.”
>”Competition drives me. I was taught martial arts by a family friend as a kid and one thing lead to another.”
>”Honestly? I really like facing off with someone, the visceral feel of a fight, where pain or victory are both on the table.”
