Synopsis
"A Dark Fantasy Quest" is a dark fantasy set in a OC universe and follows your story as you pilot the young rogue Kae. After living most, if not all, your life in the woods you are forced to rejoin society out of desperation. Join Kae as she navigates and learns about the world around her, makes new friends, and over comes (or doesn’t) what ever obstacles the unforgiving world throws at her.
"A Dark Fantasy Quest" offers a sandbox free roam experience, an organic world filled with characters, a dark ominous narrative, original illustrations, a complex and rewarding leveling /combat system, and a guarantee to see the quest to an organic end. As you explore the world remember that time moves with you, it is not at all advisable or possible to involve yourself in every plot line, character, and hook within a chapter. Lastly, remember to watch your back, as death may be closer to you then your shirt.

Schedule?
I update every 1-3 days, depending on how busy I am with school work/life/etc. On holidays I may update everyday, on exam crunch time I may not at all. This is not a quest that you have to show up on time for, drop in every day or two and you wont miss anything. And you never have to worry about someone backtracking your vote a day later. Lastly, I will use the same thread until page nine / ten so be sure to pin us!
>Thready Update Prognosis:
Every 2 days

Rules?
-Prompts that are more in depth have a better chance of succeeding. Example: you have a better chance of success if you provide an argument as to why the monster shouldn't eat you then if you simply say "convince him not to eat you".
-Prompts have to make sense in continuity to the story. Example: characters who are established pacifists wont start murdering randomly for exp.
-minimal meta/power gaming
-minimal backpedaling
-Im always in the /qtg/ so please put critiques there

You don't hesitate for even a moment and abandon the villagers to their fate. Ducking into another allay you check to see if Jackson is still following you. He doesn't hesitate to leave the villagers behind either, and you are surprised at how quickly he seems to manage catching up to you. As you run further away in a dire frantic search for Nathalie you do your best to block out the screams and lamentations from the villagers you left behind. You must find Nathalie!!! Nothing else matters...

Your destination is the city center, that's where you saw the large effigy and that's where Nathalie told you the festival is going to take place. So its naturally, its the first place you choose to look. Unfortunately, you dont know much about the town as you have only spend maybe a single night walking its streets. That and the fact that the city is on FIRE and many routs have been blocked makes the search even harder [+5 DELAY]. So frantic is your search that you don't immediately realize you are being lead by a SMELL, a STRONG odor that pierces through the heavy smoke, enters your lungs, and clouds your mind [+3 insight]. This smell is nothing like Nathalie or even like Jackson, its heavy and thick. Something LARGE must be producing it.

Eventually you see the wicker man tower above the rooftops, just like the town it is alight. All that wheat made good kindling as the heat bends the metal frame causing the entire thing to lean over and spew fire onto the town square. For the first time you let your self rest and take in your surroundings...

If they are ignoring each other send an aimed shot to the masked men leg, he might know what's up.
If they are just running in fear like the villagers shoot the nearest bandit.

[Rogue: Kae] [Aimed Shot:Leg]s the [Masked Man] with her [Hunters Bow]

[Masked Man] Takes 0 damage after armour

Aiming directly at the leg of the second masked man, you take a moment to perfect your shot before firing. When you release the arrow it sails over the fire before perfectly connecting and penetrates directly through his leg. The masked man stumbles for a moment before straitening back out. He turns to look at you through the smoke and fire and, as if the arrow is not even embedded in his leg, he starts moving towards you.

From the bandits position, and the masked guys guarding the exit, if Nat was abducted she was probably carried there.

Make Jackson stop, take his helmet off again if needed, then we interrogate the survivors and as a last resort, try to smell Natalie, we know her scent and we got our insight back.

Actually, try sniffing Natalie BEFORE we touch jackson, or else we will lose our powers again

As you watch Jackson, quite literally, split the last of your enemies in half. You start to realize that Jackson is slowly shifting in the direction of the kings hand tavern. Taking no time to take in the environment, you throw your hands up in front of your face and dash through the ever expanding flames that threaten to block your way. Clear of the smoke you find yourself on the other side of the rubble, losing sight of Jackson you start to panic. Trusting your new found instincts you lift your nose into the air and take severl deep sniffs, you smell for Jackson but you also try to find Nathalie! [insight[3]] You can smell something alright, heavy smoke. As you black nimbus formations enter your lungs you are forced to your knees in a fit of coughing. Worse of all you DONT sense Nathalie anywhere, you know her sent but cant locate her. All you can smell is Fire, Jackson, and that HEAVY aroma that seems to pull Jackson towards it. Getting off your feet you race towards where you believe Jackson to be, you have to stop him before he drifts off and becomes unreachable like last time.

All around you black crows dive through the smoke and start to feast upon the fallen bodies. Entire murders of crows swarm corpses like a black tide, picking them clean in the process. So vicious is their gluttony that they don’t even notice as the fire spreads over them. The flames reach out and squeeze the life from what ever birds it can get a hold of. The crows offer no resistance as they continue consuming even as the fire incinerates them. [+3 insight]

Leaving all that behind, you grab hold of Jackson's arm and pull, ”JACKSON, STOP. YOU SAID YOU WOULD HELP ME. DON'T ABANDON ME NOW!” . Jackson's armour is red hot, but you persevere and hold tight as you try with all your might to stop him. [strength: fail]Yet his strength is too great as he simply drags you behind him, at best you are only slowing him down. Giving up on that you jump on his back in an attempt to drag him down, but after calibrating for your weight he trucks on. A final attempt is made to pull off his helmet! You put both your hands on his helmet, “scalding” is to put the heat of the metal mildly.

[INT:Fail] The heat radiating off Jackson is simply too great, as your fingers slip under his helmet the pain almost knocks you out. Letting go of Jackson you fall right off his back and to the ground. You look at your shaking hands, and for a while you are not able to move your fingers at all. You watch as Jackson continues towards his destiny. The only time Jackson ever seems to stop is to gut the odd bandit who tries to intercept him. A great murder of crows follows in his wake.

Even if it kills us I don't want to live in a world where we let our only friend die because we are too scared. I mean we are a ROGUE, we don't have to strong arm our way through like Jackson. Maybe there is a subterfuge option now that Jackson is gone.

I also think these masked guys may be golems or something, maybe that's why our arrows didn't work.

>leave Jackson

>Leave Jackson to face his destiny alone and double back to the path guarded by the masked men insearch of Nathalie.

Jackson? More like Jackshit.
>>
You know, I like jackson and I actually pity him but he is being a tremendous asshat with his stubbornness, let's try to get his helmet off again, that way he can stop this purging boner and actually do something productive in searching for Natalie

Can we at least try to get his helmet off one more time before going on our own to try to save our friend?
if the only thing keeping us from taking his helmet out is the pain we can try it again...for Natalie
>>
>>3315449

this, one more try to get his helmet off, using a tool.

>>3315426
>follow After Jackson
Nat might already be dead, saving Jackson from certain death seems like the most reasonable thing to do

I change mine to

>>Leave Jackson to face his destiny alone and double back to the path guarded by the masked men insearch of Nathalie.

we cannot possibly abandon Natalie, no way in hell we are going to leave her, if Jack won't help he can die in a dumpster fire for all I care.
It would be stupid to leave without at least trying to get his helmet off again tho
>>
Since we can't seem to ddcide betwing following or leaving as the best way to save Natalie( both have valid merits in bringing her alive) we can try a 3rd option.

We don't leave or follow, we go BEFORE Jackson, we know where he is going and we can go there before him to talk with Ratko.
Why? Because Ratko probably knows where Natalie is with his crows all around town, even if we left Jack to look for her, what we have is a guess at best.

So we run to reach the tavern before Jackson does and ask Ratko where our friend is.

I think we should talk with Ratko too.
One thing that most of us agree is that helping Natalie is our top priority, we are just on the fence of going right now or trying to keep getting Jack to come with us, if Ratko can tell us where she is that would save us a lot of time.

You like Jackson, you even find yourself feeling sorry for him. But his stubbornness is beyond tiresome, you JUST stood up to him and he is ALREADY back to his old ways. He agreed to help you yet he has already gone back on his word, you simply cant trust this man with anything! Buuuutttt, on the other hand, Jackson made short work of six men that bared your way. If you didn’t have him with you, it may not have been possible to get even this far. So, as much as you would like to let him go do what ever, that is simply not acceptable at this moment. You pick up a rock and toss it, hitting him square in the back. He is going to help you rescue Natalie in time or he is going to bisect you, one way or the other this suffering is going to end. The rock to the back seems to work momentarily as he stops for a few moments before starting up again. Unfortunately, a second rock doesn’t have any effect, your plan to have him chase you fails to lift of the ground. Plan B is to get him to take his helmet off, you have a working theory that there may be a connection between Jackson's “fits” and the helmet. So, it reasons that if you can get it off his head, you may be able to calm him down. It worked before after all.

Running after Jackson, you unbuckle your sheathed sword and decide to use it as a makeshift mace. Not having much time to think of a plan you decide to simply try and knock it off his dumb head! When you finally get in range you use all your momentum to swing the bat right at the side of his head. The speed at which Jackson moves is surprising to say the least. In one fluid motion he swings his body and sword all the way around to parry your strike. Your sheathed sword and his hit each other with such force that you fail to retain control of the handle, sending your sword spinning through the air and landing several feet behind you. Your plan may have failed, but at least you now have Jackson's FULL attention. He stares you down with burning rage. Letting his sword drop, he reaches his hand out to grab hold of you. Oddly enough, you are not scared, a part of you has decided that after everything you have done and after all the chances Jackson has had to kill you; he never actuality did. Perhaps his bark is much worse then his bite after all. In fact you’re starting to feel confident that he isn’t going to kill you. ”Im not scared of you, I don’t think your goi-HRRKK”, its probably too late for the memory of Jackson crushing the skull of a young girl to return. As he gets hold of you and lifts you off the ground, you start to realize maybe calling Jackson's bluff was the wrong play here after all. Standing on your tippy toes you decide a softer approach may work to save your skin. [CHA:18: Success] In the softest voice you can muster, ”You are going the wrong way Jack, its this way...” ... ”Put me down Jack, put me down”. It seems to be working since you feel the souls of your feet gently hit the ground again. Taking your glove off, you reach out to the one place Jackson's skin isn’t covered by the pressure cooker he is wearing: His neck. ”Follow me Jack, ill take you where you need to go” you can feel his heat as your fingers touch his skin, the muscles twitch as you make contact [insight = 0]. You can feel Jackson start to relax and you feel his heart beat through his neck slow ”Follow me, come on, Its this way Jack come on.” ”...This...”. Finally his grip on you is released, you wait for him to pick up his sword again before gently pulling him back towards the town square. Its slow going at first as Jackson keeps looking down the path towards the kings hand inn, but soon Jackson speeds up and the two of you are back on the proper path. [DELAY +6]

The main square is alight, worse then ever. Yet you manage to push you way through the blaze and head to the exit that was guarded by the masked men. You wonder what part these men have to play in these events but youre sure they have something to do with Nathalie's disappearance. Moving quickly you stumble on two more masked men standing over something down an alley, you try to sneak up on them but Jackson rushes ahead of you and whirlwinds both of them before you even get the chance. With Jackson around, the stealth approach may not be possible. But it also may not even be necessary. Every time you watch Jackson dismember his enemies you are taken back by the symphony of death he dishes out. You wonder if there is a single man in this world that could stop him. Approaching the crash site you move in closer, curious to see what the masked men where standing over...

Loki:”hello free bird, who's the badger? Didn’t know I had competition.” he cackles at you like a hyaena, but soon finds himself punished with a wet coughing fit. Its Loki himself, why are you not surprised to find him here at the end. He seems to have taken quit the wound to his side, your no expert but you cant imagine him surviving this one with out some aid. Jackson lifts his sword readying a killing blow, yet seems to be waiting for your go ahead. Giving the alleyway a better glance, you notice the bodies of three other bandits. This is the site of a recent battle.

You bend down to get eye level with Loki as he seems to be having trouble craning his neck. Kae:”Loki, im looking for someone, she has a button nose and...”.Loki points his bloody finger down the allay Loki:”they went that way”. Not sure he is understanding who you are actually looking for, you continue Kae:”long bangs covering her forehead, she would be wearing a”. Loki just keeps pointing down the allay, Loki:”I know who it is you hunt, they took her that way”. You’re not sure how Loki could possibly know that you are looking for Nathalie, so you ask him to clarify. Loki:”She was baying your name like a gazelle when they carried her off, the wise owl infers much”. This is good news, but maybe too good. How do you know you can trust Loki? Perhaps this is another trick? For all you know Loki is taking one final stab at you. Your contemplation is interrupted by a bizarre question. Loki:”Tell me free bird, did your gale produce this ominous wind or do you simply ride its current?” You’re not sure what he is talking about, and you don’t have the time to decipher Loki's riddles. So you ask for specific directions instead, to your surprise he provides the information freely. Loki:”Look to where we last met, that is where you will find their den.”. Loki's life force continues to bleed out of him.

Kae:"Who are 'they' Loki? the masked men?"
Loki:"The masked men, the bandits, they hunt together at the head of the crab who leads them. They were targeting your prey, of this I am sure. They knew when she would stick her neck into the watering hole."
Its good information, but can you piece it together? Does it ultimately matter?
Kae:"What about you Loki? What killed you?"
He cringes at your words
Loki:"Kill me? Never, I will never die. I have been through worse then this, it wont- kill me..."
His bravado cracks, you wonder if he truly believes it or is simply lying to himself.
Loki:"Just... Don't turn your back on the masked men, even when you gore them they will rise again."
You look to their corpses, after the blending Jackson unleashed on them you don't think that will be a problem.
Kae:"Thank you Loki, I will save her and... for what its worth, I forgive you"
Loki places his bloody hand on your face and pushes you away
Loki:"Again with the eulogies, save it yourself. Im not ready... to rest..."

You leave Loki behind with Jackson in tow, as you run down the alley you hear the soft sounds of a flute. Then nothing.

roll me some d20s for the next part
>Also, did you leave Loki any of your [Medical equipment 10/10]? if so, how much?
After spending some time thinking about this I think I would prefer if this was a direct decision from Kae not to leave him with anything instead of just forgetting she has some, in case that is what was happening. Don't forget you may need this equipment in the future.

>will we be getting some what ifs at the end of the chapter?
Yes, although I didn't predraw all the chapter characters like last time so all the people you didn't meet will be big [?] images

As for the helmet, you'll have to ask Jackson yourself. It should be clear to Kae that his lucidity is in deep question though.

Are Quest Delays gonna be a common token during events or is it just a special "stress us out until we mess up" thing for this event?
>>
>>3339283
Im just really busy atm so its like 4 times a week right now (Thursday - Sunday). There are plenty of times where im just sitting around going "man I wish people would come vote so I can work on the next part" on the weekend though. But you guys trickle in like molasses and I end up sitting on my hands. Its not like im helping things by updating at a random time though, so it cant be helped.
>>
>>3339373
SHIT I Didnt mean that I meant when we were fighting with Jackson against the armored thugs whenever a turn ended Quest delay popped up, im sorry I sounded really rude, and should have explained myself better.
>>
>>3339379
Oh, in that case [delay] has always been a thing. I'm just trying to be more forward with game mechanics, such as [insight], instead of expecting people to figure it out.

Imagine all the times I told you [insight] was happening, now imagine I expected you to extrapolate that it was happening from the context alone. That's what I was doing before for like everything.
>>
>>3339403
I see. I can assume [delay] is a bad thing, right?
>>
>>3339405
In this case it is, as it constitutes the passage of time during a rescue.
>>
>>3339724
Probably why we found a bleeding Loki and not a fighting one right? What was up with that anyway, suddenly grew a concience?
>>
>>3339875
As much as I would love to write a few paragraphs about lokis characterization, you are just going to have to wait for the epilogue.

And yes, thats why he is there bleeding, because you showed up too late. But not late enough for him to be dead at the hands of the masked men.
