You are Yumigawa Rushorou, apathetic student council president, star student, and possible soon-to-be corpse.
Yesterday, you woke up in a ruined parking garage with no idea how you got there, discovered that the city you were in was overrun by skeletons and fire, and ran afoul of a magical artifact that really should have had a warning sign. Then things got weird, when you discovered you'd been roped into a no-holds-barred battle to the death between magi dubbed the Holy Grail War.

Today you wake up and your new house is on fire.

Caster is pulling you frantically from the bed, a rapid-fire stream of indecipherable syllables issuing from her lips. As you groggily stumble along with her, barriers of pinkish energy are rapidly erected around you to keep the fire back. Behind you and Caster, you can see Matsuda dragging along a similarly half-asleep Ogawara.

The lot of you get out of the house just in time, as it collapses in flames. In fact, the entire neighborhood seems far worse-off than yesterday. The streets are swarming with skeletons, but they're all focused on destroying the houses, rather than attacking you. Every building is in flames, and even the street seems to have gone through a second round of destruction. You wonder faintly how you could have slept through all this, but before you have time to think, Caster is talking.

"Master, the magical energy that's causing this destruction is expanding rapidly from the South. Now it's intensified, though, I can tell it's bordered at the city limits. We need to head north as fast as possible in order to escape this ritual!"

Matsuda and Ogawara look to you for confirmation and a plan. You were the one who sat up talking with her, after all.

With the city rapidly disintegrating around you, there's no time to ask for more information. You need to get somewhere more safe as soon as possible.

"Alright, Caster. I'll take your word for it. Let's get out of the city."

Caster's face brightens. "Great! Follow me, and I'll lead you on the fastest route north."

With that, Caster's cloak dissolves in a shimmer of light, revealing beneath it a white tunic, quite a bit more gold jewelry, and large, eagle-like wings sprouting from her back. In fact, you're shocked she was able to keep them hidden under the cloak. Almost at the same time, another burst of golden light coalesces into a large ivory and silver staff, adorned with a complex pattern of interlocking rings, radiating lines, and gold feathers. The sorceress takes to the air above you to scout the terrain, and then begins rapidly flying Northwards, calling for you to follow.

As you, Matsuda, and Ogawara follow along behind the flying Servant, it's not long before a group of skeletons gathers to block your path. Caster gives no more reaction to this than a mild pout, however, and calls to them, "Hmph! Out of the way, you meatless puppets!"
With a flourish of her staff, a lion leaps out of the inferno beside the road and scatters the skeletons like bowling pins, crushing one of their skulls between its jaws. For the rest of your trip out of the city, the lion pads along beside you, keeping any other foes well away.

After about an hour of walking, you find that you've finally escaped the burning city, as the road enters a heavily forested area, losing its sidewalks in the process. There's even a battered sign identifying the city, standing bent over by the side of the road, but the letters are too degraded to read. As Caster had promised, the flames stop right at the city limits. Once you're between the lines of trees, the air cools, and you can see blue skies above.

Caster alights on the road, confidently declaring, "We should be safe now, Master. I don't detect any more enemies nearby."

Great. Now you can get some answers. As you continue walking Northwards into the forest, now alongside Caster rather than below, you pose your questions.

"That's good to hear, Caster. Now, can you tell me how you knew what was going on back there? Why did things change so much during the night? The residential area was almost untouched when we got there."

Caster looks a bit troubled by the barrage of questions. "We~ell, I'm not sure how much you'll be able to follow, since you're not a magus, but let's see if I can explain it in simple terms. One of the most common types of magecraft uses a ritual magic circle, a pattern of geometric shapes and inscribed incantations, to channel the magical energy and achieve the desired effect." She uses the end of her staff to draw a small magic circle in glowing energy on the road, illustrating the point, before continuing.

"Now, in that city, the leylines of the earth were actually shaped into a partial magic circle, and presumably someone had done a great deal of construction to complete it. The magical energy of the world was being channeled into an enormous ritual to consume the city in fire, killing everyone within its boundaries and levelling all the works of man within the city. Eventually, that city will be nothing more than a huge pit of flames. The same ritual was also channeling the souls of those it killed to summon two types of familiar: the skeletons we've encountered and revenant warriors. That second type would have been more of a challenge; they're based on a degraded form of the magecraft used to summon heroic spirits like myself. I wonder what they wanted the familiars for, though, when the ritual was destroying the city anyway..."

Caster seems lost in thought for a moment, pondering the ritual, before catching herself and finishing her explanation.

"Anyway, as to why I couldn't detect it last night, a ritual constrained within a magic circle doesn't happen all at once. The effects flow outwards from the center of the circle to the periphery. Usually this delay is too small to make a difference, since most magic circles are relatively small, but for a ritual on that scale it must have taken quite a while. As you can see, we were on the Northern edge of the city, so it hadn't gotten to us yet."

"The reason it happened so suddenly last night is a bit stranger. I can't tell you just what happened, but it seems like there was some kind of a change in the ritual just before I was summoned. The way the energy flowed, it was as if there was some powerful effect that had been holding it back, but that effect was removed last night. From your story, it sounds like that goblet in the church could have been holding back the ritual's power, but there's no way for me to investigate that now."

The road the four of you are travelling comes to a sudden end as you emerge into a large clearing in the woods, the asphalt crumbling into chunks scattered amongst green grass, and a soft breeze stirs the foliage. In the midst of the clearing, a decrepit cottage sits half submerged in a shallow lake. Caster raises a hand to warn you against continuing forward.

"Master, I feel a magical presence. There's another Servant in these woods."

Caster calls herself your Servant and yet has the nerve to block your path? Absurd! You won't cower in the shadows like some weakling. You brush right past Caster, marching confidently into the clearing, and call out to the foe.

"I've been told this is a war! If it's a war, then, step out of your hiding place! Face me head on, so-called Master, and we'll see who's the superior leader!"

This bold declaration resounds through the clearing, and you hear the sound of clapping coming from somewhere in the trees. Before you can identify the source, though, a shadow moves, and a blade strikes. A soldier leaps from the shadows, and before you can react your head is cut from your shoulders. The last thing you hear is the sickening sound of your own body crumpling and falling into the lake, bereft of the brain's animating control over its musculature.

You come to back in the martial-arts hall. Honestly, this time even you know that was a mistake. You just couldn't keep cool.
Confronting you once again is the smiling chestnut-haired woman who claims to be a teacher.

"Hi, is everyone doing well? This is the Tiger Dojo, the place to save those who fought hard in vain and died!"

She gives a little wave. You look around for 'everyone,' but you're the only one here.

"Wait." There it is, the rage coming up in her face. This is going to be a repeat of last time, you just know it.

"YOU DIDN'T FIGHT AT ALL, THOUGH! Or more like, you were too eager to fight! Too eager! Chesto~!"

You receive a shinai strike right to the neck. It's too appropriate! The sensitivity from having just been decapitated magnifies the pain.

"And so, since no advice will be helpful for someone who made such an obvious mistake, today we'll be doing striking practice! On this target right here! Introducing... Disciple #1!"

A young girl in a gym uniform, with white hair and red eyes, enters through a side door, carrying her own smaller shinai.

"Hi~. Pleased to meet you, Onii-chan!"

Unfortunately for you, 'Disciple #1' seems as eager and gleeful as her instructor to dish out the punishment. As she gets into her stance, the instructor continues speaking.

"In conclusion: Watch out for surprise attacks! Take this Tiger Stamp! Not, Disciple #1, get ready..."

Heeding Caster's advice, you hang back just outside the circle of trees. Caster begins chanting, low enough that the sound of the wind masks her words.
A few moments pass in the near-stillness, and then, in a blur of motion, a figure leaps from the darkness to strike.

Unfortunately, he's left it too late, and the trees around you weave into a protective shield, animated by Caster's spell. The attacking figure is caught like a fly in a web, and you can see he's clad as an ancient soldier of some kind, lightly clothed in a red and white cloth uniform tunic, armed with a long spear that's been stopped mid-thrust, a few inches from your throat. An ornate bronze helmet, cast with rich decoration, covers his head and face.

Before you can inspect the enemy further, the stretched tree-limbs bounce back, launching the enemy Servant across the clearing with great force. He slams bodily into the ruined cottage and falls into the lake limply, presumably unconscious.

"Master!" Caster calls out, "Your orders, please!"

>[ ] "Go on the offensive. Make sure the enemy Servant is destroyed." (Pride)

This would be a good time to mention what I've decided regarding the request for character development. At the last vote, you folks ended up split between pride and self-preservation as your motivations. That's how I'm writing Rushorou now, but the choices you make will push him towards one or the other extreme. Of course, there will be other options, and custom write-ins are always available. If you want to change Rushorou's focus, shape it through his actions and I'll adjust accordingly over time.

Let's make good use of that 20. Also, quietly tell the boys to take cover and be ready to strike. Servants have Masters, after all, and while none of us are mages, a 3v1 (or 2v1, Ogawara's combat prowess is iffy) might yield results.

Thinking quickly, you conclude that the only way to resolve this situation is decisive action. At the same time, you can't ignore your companions.

"Caster, go on the offensive! Make sure the enemy Servant is utterly destroyed! Matsuda, Ogawara, take cover and get ready in case the enemy Master attacks. We don't know how powerful they are yet."

Ogawara agrees eagerly, quickly hiding himself in the undergrowth, but Matsuda is more reluctant. He grumbles as he steps behind a sheet of hanging leaves, keeping his fists out and eyeing the scenery in every direction. You can't watch these two forever, though; you return focus to Caster's fight.

Caster is using her flight to maintain a steady advantage, hovering over the lake and pouring magical energy into it. Under the bombardment, nothing can get out, and you're satisfied to see steam rising from the water. Even if the enemy remains submerged, he'll cook soon enough.

Unfortunately, you're surprised out of this satisfying view of overwhelming victory by a deep voice from behind you.

"Why don't you call that Servant of yours off. I really don't think it would be wise for you to continue."

You whirl around to see a tall man in a priest's cassock about ten feet behind you, with shoulder-length dark hair and a malicious smirk. He has one hand pinning Matsuda's arms behind him and the other pressing a knife to the delinquent's neck, and although you can see Matsuda straining the priest's grip is unshakable.

"I just came to have a friendly chat with you, to be honest. Unfortunately, Assassin and I don't always see... eye-to-eye on such matters, and he jumped the gun. So why don't we let bygones be bygones and talk, like gentlemen?"

How do you respond?

Shit. If nothing else, we've learned what another master looks like. Though if this is really Assassin, how did Caster see through Presence Concealment? Might be worth asking her later to see if we're being lied to.

Out of curiosity, would this priest happen to have the voice of Jouji Nakata?

>>3329385

This is an entirely original character voiced by Nakata Jouji, yes.
>>
Seeing Matsuda pinned like that drains the will to fight from you. To sacrifice him now, for the sake of a transient victory, would make you the kind of brutal commander history always reviles; an Oda Nobunaga, rather than a Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Keeping your eyes locked to the enemy Master's, you reluctantly assent.

"...fine, we'll talk. Caster, stand down!"

Caster is audibly confused at the command, but complies nonetheless, tapering off her magical attacks as she asks, "Are you sure, Master? It shouldn't take much longer to boil this weasel!"

"Yes, I'm sure. Come down here."

As Caster alights beside you, she gasps, realizing the situation. At the same time, the priest lets out a sigh of relief.

"Fuuu... I'm glad you can see sense, young man. Assassin, to me!"

After a splash and a rustle of foliage, the damp soldier is standing at attention behind the priest, who hands off Matsuda with practiced grace and stows his knife somewhere within his cassock. Silently, Assassin takes up the duty of holding Matsuda, with his spearpoint resting on the delinquent's carotid.

"Now," the priest says, at his ease, "I think an introduction is in order. My name is Cid Ajisartous; you can call me Cid." He extends a hand to shake, smirking all the while, and you can't help but feel you're being forced to act out a play in decidedly poor taste.
As you shake the proffered hand and open your mouth to provide your own introduction, Cid cuts you off. "Now, I don't have any questions for you, Yumigawa Rushorou, but I'm certain you have plenty you'd like to ask me. You see, I'm the one organizing this little tournament, and I'm sure your Servant has been able to provide you with only a partial explanation. Tell me, young man. What would you like to know about the Holy Grail War?"

Much as you'd like to tell this bastard to let Matsuda go and begone, you do have a number of questions about the Holy Grail War, since Caster's knowledge was anything but complete.
After considering the most important information for a few moments, you compile a mental list of questions and rattle them off to the priest. You want this conversation over and done with as soon as possible.

"Alright, Cid, I do have some questions for you. First, are you organizing and participating in this 'tournament'? That hardly seems like the fair thing to do, for someone who'd describe it like a game. Second, are there any more rules to the war? All I've heard so far is 'don't die.' Third, how do you know who I am, and why did you choose me to participate? In short, what's your relation to me? Lastly, who destroyed the city, and what for?"

The priest just smiles in the face of your angry stream of questions. He waits until you're quite done, and explains with the measured speech of an experienced preacher.

"To answer your first question, I am not participating in the tournament. The Holy Grail War has seven participants, including yourself, and I do not number among them. There is one Master for each class of Servant. My own is merely a useful adminitrative tool, ensuring my safety in the face of the power at the competitors' disposal. As I said earlier, I had no intention of attacking you. Unfortunately, you're the seventh person I've spoken to on the subject this morning, and Assassin became quite tired of peaceful conversation, it seems."

Cid chuckles, turning an eye to his Servant. Assassin is, as he implied, visibly tense, his eyes focused on Caster.

"As to your second question, there is only one rule. When only one Servant of the seven survives, his or her Master is the victor; to that victorious pair is granted a wish, by the omnipotent power of the Holy Grail. Each Servant was summoned by their yearning, some unfulfilled desire or great regret which they attained during the course of their life. Similarly, every participant chosen bears a great desire within himself, whether conscious or unconscious.
Masters and Servants, before you is the golden opportunity to have your heart's desire made manifest. I have no doubt that your hearts fill even now with gratitude to almighty God for granting you this good fortune.
Ah, but I am becoming distracted. I was speaking of the rules. Whether you kill the enemy Masters and Servants together or only slay the Servants is immaterial. Even targeting the Masters is a valid strategy, as Servants subsist on their energy. I should warn you, though, that if a Masterless Servant and a Master without a Servant meet, they can forge a new contract. That, I believe, is everything you need to know about the conduct of the War."
>>
As the priest lectures on the details of the Holy Grail War, you have ample time to observe him, idly speculating as to his nature and origins. The first thing that stands out about him is his height. You're tall for your age, but he still overtops you by a head; he's 6'4", at least. The second notable detail is his ethnicity. He clearly isn't Asian, but he doesn't match your expectations of a European, either. He's darker than that, and his hair is quite wavy. If you had to place him, it would be somewhere in the Middle East, or possibly Mediterranean Europe.

"Regarding your identity and participation, I must first explain the nature of the world in which you find yourself. This is not, as you no doubt imagined, reality. Rather, it is a parallel realm, created through a highly potent and time-consuming ritual. Indeed, it is a work of magecraft approaching the realm of True Magic. When I speak of organizing the Holy Grail War, I do so because it was I who conducted this ritual.
You see, the summoning of the Holy Grail is an art that is no longer possible in reality. Thanks to the efforts of some highly determined anti-establishment members of the Mages' Association, all traces of the mystery facilitating the Holy Grail War were destroyed. It was only by creating an alternate realm, modeled on the past, that I was able to retrieve the technique. It is this artificial world which you now inhabit.
Now, moving on to your selection, and why I first needed to explain the nature of this world. I did not select you or your six opponents specifically. Instead, I brought to this world a random assortment of 1,050 inhabitants of developed nations around the world which regularly produce mages. I then spread these contestants through seven cities, identical to that in which you awoke. These cities provided the preliminary round of the tournament, in which the tasks were to survive, find a Place of Purity where they could obtain a Servant, and escape the city as it was destroyed. Although thirty of these initial contestants succeeded in surviving and escaping, the Grail War needs only seven participants. The rest of the survivors will be... backup, I suppose. Potential replacement Masters.
Now, I believe that covers all of your questions. Are you ready to go forth and obtain your wish?"

You want to have done with it and say goodbye to Cid. You really, truly are absolutely fed up with his droning, monotonous voice and smug manner. There is one more detail nagging at you, though, and you can't finish the conversation until you get an answer.
>>
"Not quite. There's something wrong with that setup: the coins. When I woke up here, I had five coins, and they were consumed by a goblet; I assume that thing, and the church it was in, are the 'place of purity' you're referring to, but that doesn't make sense. Matsuda and Ogawara didn't have coins; how would they have gotten Servants, if they were potential Masters?"

Cid smiles, like a teacher whose favorite student has volunteered an important answer.

"That's right, the coins. Good catch. There were only enough to summon seven Servants; as I said, the War needs no more. However, money does change hands quite often, doesn't it? I'll tell you now, you are the only one of the seven Masters who woke up here with the necessary funds to obtain a Servant. As to how the others got them... I'll leave it to your imagination."

Before you can think of a reply, Cid has signalled Assassin to release Matsuda, turned on his heel, and retreated into the shadows of the forest. He leaves one more piece of advice behind him:

"Keep heading North, young man! It's there, in the eighth city, that you'll find the War!"

What do you do?

“The reality of the matter here is that, by following me, your life will be in danger do to the nature of this competition. Are you willing to accept that?”
Or something along those lines at least. Failing to eliminate this servant due to the presence of lessers is.... mildly bothersome to one such as ourself.

By that I meant "What could you figure out about Assassin during the fight?"
Basically, what does Circe have to say about Assassin beyond "sneaky and stabby"?
>>
As the priest fades from view, you reflect on what he's said. It's a lot to take in, and it's more than a little difficult to believe. An omnipotent wish-granting device that can only be summoned in an artificial reality? You'd certainly have called him insane a few days ago, but now, after battling animate skeletons and watching Caster at her work, you have a much harder time denying anything.

Caster. Your mind reeling, you fix on her. She's your Servant, and a powerful magus; she should be able to help you work out whether anything the priest was saying is true.

"Caster, did what he said seem true to you? It's bizarre, to say the least. Was he lying?"

"We~ell," she hesitates before answering, "it does all seem very odd. Even when I was alive, magi didn't go around creating their own worlds. Still, I'd say he was telling the truth; at least as far as he believes. I've spent a lot of time with liars, and I've learned pretty well how to spot a lie. As far as that priest is concerned, he was giving you the Gods' own truth."

"I see," you respond, tone grim. It's not the kind of definite answer you were hoping for, and Cid didn't display any incredible world-shaping powers. What if he's just a maniac who found out your name through some other means? Caster said he didn't lie, but it's not as if he specifically stated how he learned your name, and that's the most impressive ability he demonstrated.

At any rate, it's not a question you can answer definitely right now. You may as well operate on the assumption that what he said was at least partially true; there are six other Masters, and another city to the North that will serve as the battleground. For the sake of the unknown desire within you, you'll seek after the Grail, whether it's real or not.

"One other thing," you continue, shifting topics from the priest, "What could you tell about Assassin from the fight?"

"Not much," Caster declares bluntly. "He seems to be a fairly weak heroic spirit; there was relatively little energy animating him. He did have a lot of it clinging to him, though, as if he's under some kind of powerful passive effect. In terms of his actual combat ability, you saw the whole thing; he was a trivial enemy."

"Oh, that's right!" Caster brightens, remembering anothe subject, "This has to do with what Cid said, as well as Assassin's abilities. Assassins usually have an ability called Presence Concealment, which allows them to hide from other Servants. This one wasn't using it when we ran into him, though, which certainly implies that the decision to attack was a spur-of-the-moment thing."

"Interesting." That certainly does hold the whole 'lost control of Assassin' story together, although it doesn't do anything for the rest of Cid's spiel.

Also, does Assassin look a bit like this?
That would imply that he's a Hoplite, so he might be from the Trojan War.
If he's Greek, Circe might recognize him.
>>
>>3330772
>He seems to be a fairly weak heroic spirit; there was relatively little energy animating him.
So he's a C-lister hero, or has Uncrowned Arms Mastership.
>He did have a lot of it clinging to him, though, as if he's under some kind of powerful passive effect.
A skill or NP? Circe couldn't tell a lot about him, so maybe he has something like Helm of Hidden Infidelity, or she just didn't see much during the fight.
>>
>>3330797
I'm still writing the continuation of this scene, but I'll take a moment here to say this.
She didn't see much. Assassin spent 90% of the fight at the bottom of the lake.
There are several details that differ a fair amount from that art, but the spear and tunic are somewhat correct. More detail in a bit.
>>
Having made your resolve to fight, you turn to Matsuda and Ogawara, who's finally crawled out of the bushes now that he's certain the danger is gone. These two are problematic. They're baggage, of a sort. As a natural leader, you already feel it's your responsibility to keep them safe, but in this War that could mean your own death. And so, you mentally prepare a statement that will prepare them for the danger to come and send them away if they aren't resolved to face it.

"You two, I have to tell you this. If you continue to follow me, your lives will be put in danger due to the nature of this competition. According to that priest, there are six other Masters, with Servants as powerful as Caster, all looking to kill me. I can't promise I'll always be able to protect you; Matsuda, your experience just now made that painfully clear. I want you to know that if you decide to part ways with me here, I won't hold it against you. Knowing all that, will you still follow me?"

The two stare at you for a long moment, caught between the possibilities. Matsuda is the first to speak, putting a scarred hand on your shoulder.

"Kaichou, you've saved my life twice since we showed up here. Four times, if ya count when missy over there saved the lot o' us from those skeletons. When that bastard had his knife to my throat, you knew it might mean yer own death if ya gave up. But ya still did, 'cause ya didn't want ta see me dead. That's how a real man leads, Kaichou. How a real badass leads. If I left ya here an' never paid ya back, I'd be tha shame o' Cromartie High."

Matsuda pats you heavily on the shoulder, which is probably the closest he can get to a hug. Then he turns to Ogawara, waiting for the smaller boy's response. Ogawara trembles, manifestly feeling the effects, not only of the battle, but also of Matsuda's declaration. Finally he opens his mouth to speak.

"Th-th-th-th-tha-" Matsuda falters again and again on the first syllable, finally stopping and taking a deep breath, closing his eyes for a moment to try and dispell his omnipresent nervous tension.
"That's a-absurd, Yumigawa-san!" When he finally gets the nerve up to speak, Ogawara practically shouts his resolve. "This is amazing; it's exactly the kind of thing I used to, ah, to watch in anime, or act out in g-games! You don't, um. You don't think I'd really w-want to go back h-home, do you? I, I, I want to be a p-part of this War! I'll keep following you e-even if it means, well, even, ah, e-e-even if I could die!"

So, Ogawara is resolved as well. You're not sure how to feel about the dedication these two are showing. On the one hand, it's heartening to know they're so loyal, but on the other you remain worried over the potential for them to end up as liabilities. As you're pondering the future course of your small squadron in this War, Matsuda speaks up.

(Continued)
>>
"Look, Kaichou. I didn't get a chance to say this 'til now. Things just didn't seem quite right with everythin' goin' on, but now we've got a minute, and well..." He's being uncharacteristically hesitant, piquing your curiosity. What could have the stalwart Matsuda so spooked?

"Look, you just oughta take a look at yer reflection in that lake, alright?"

Behind Matsuda, you can see Ogawara nodding frantically, and looking... anticipatory? It's true that you haven't seen your reflection since you appeared in this world, but what about your appearance could trigger this kind of response in the two? Going along with matters, you walk over to the lake, which has returned to its pre-battle calm. Leaning over and peering at yourself, you see...

"GAH!"

What the hell was that! You fall backwards in shock, stumbling into a seated position on the ground! In the water you saw yourself... changed. You look again, hoping it was an illusion or momentary trick of the light, but no such luck. Your hair and skin have both become pure white; unnaturally so, as if sculpted from marble. Your eyes have changed as well, becoming a deep wine-red. Besides this upheaval of coloration, your features seem to have shifted subtly, becoming sharper and more prominent. The structure of your face has a commanding, regal air to it that was never there before, as if some inner spirit of command has manifested to reshape your profile.

Utterly shocked, you turn to Matsuda and shout, "When did that happen? How long have I been like that?" Even as the words leave your lips, though, you have the sinking feeling that you know.
As if to confirm your suspicions, it's Caster, not Matsuda, who next speaks up.
"You've looked like that at least since I first saw you, Master. Did something happen? You used to have a different face, is that it?"

You'd normally be unnerved by the accuracy of her guess, but that's not what's on your mind now, as Matsuda sheepishly answers your question.

"Ta be honest, Kaichou, ya changed while ya were out, in that church. It was tha craziest thing, just watchin' yer face flow and change like that. I thought ya were dead, 'til ya woke up; it was Ogawara who said we had ta stay behind, and that ye'd be sure ta pull through."

Sure enough, the change came over you during that strange dream. You wouldn't have guessed that "directing the power within" would shift your appearance, though.

At any rate, it seems there's nothing more to do in the clearing. Do you...

While I'm waiting for more votes on the next course of action, I'll address this. The spear is generally on that model, as is the tunic.
I'm a bit iffy on that short-sword. It looks like a gladius, but the rest of the soldier's appearance marks him as a Greek hoplite, and the gladius didn't make it out of Iberia until the Romans adopted the weapon.
At any rate, Assassin has no cape or shield, and his helmet doesn't have a horsehair brush. It's completely made out of bronze, ornamented with cast animal forms; pouncing lions on either side of the head and an eagle's upper body and head rising from the temple.

As I recall, we know command spells tie masters to servants, but not what they do beyond that. Caster has yet to complain about her supply, and didn't even know we weren't a mage at first, so we might have been given some solid magic circuits by the cup. The fact that we look like an Einzbern homunculus now also suggests that.

We should probably use this chance to ask if Caster can buff us and our crew.

You're not sure you've quite gotten over the shock of your new appearance, but you don't have time to just stand around in this forest. Daylight is slipping by you, and you'll have to get to the new city early if you want to find a decent base of operations and set up shop. As everyone's in agreement about following the priest's advice, there's reason to delay any longer.

Fortunately, a road heading North continues on the other end of the clearing. The four of you make your way around the edge of the lake to it, and set out into the forest once again. Unlike the last road, though, this one is made up of wooden half-logs, cut to provide a flat surface, laid down at regular intervals over the grass, and held down with metal bars, similar to a railroad; the track isn't actually sturdy enough to function as one, though. The soil underneath is swampy enough that some kind of covering is necessary for easy progress, but you're left wondering why it wasn't possible to lay down pavement or cobblestones, when stone had previously been so ubiquitous.

The path between the trees is just wide enough for two to walk abreast, so you head forward with Matsuda and yourself in front of Ogawara and Caster. As you walk, you can't help wondering how you'll go about fighting the War. Caster had a good showing against Assassin, but she also said he was a relatively weak Servant. Curious for her opinion on the matter, you turn to address her.

"Caster, what are your thoughts on our tactics in the Holy Grail War? Going into a free-for-all against six radically different enemies... to be honest, I don't have any good ideas as to a course of action."
>>
The sorceress had previously been looking subdued during the silent march, but brightens up in response to your question. "Actually, Master, when it comes to tactics you can consider yourself blessed to have summoned me! To tell you the truth, most of history's heroes weren't well-suited to planning. Those muscle-heads will probably just wander around the city, looking for enemies, and call it a 'patrol'. Can you imagine fighting something they call a War in such a brainless way? Kyahahaha~!" After letting out a peal of laughter at the expected stupidity of her foes, Caster continues, growing serious as she expands on her own intentions.
"Anyway, my plan is to begin by examining the leylines of the city where we'll be fighting. That will allow me to find the place where the most power is concentrated and establish my Temple there. That's one of the abilities of a Caster, Territory Creation; we can establish an area where our magical powers are enhanced significantly, and use it to draw the ambient magical energy of the earth into our own magecraft. Of course, that's not to say the energy you're supplying me with now is insufficient. In fact, there's plenty of it! I'd never have guessed you aren't a magus if you hadn't confessed to me. Still, being able to collect more energy is always the best thing for a Servant.
Once I've established my Temple, all I have to do is continuously fortify the place with traps! Since magic used within my Temple will keep getting stronger the longer I keep the territory established, it'll eventually become quite impregnable. At that point, all we need to do is send out some of my familiars to draw the enemy Servants to us."

It's certainly a powerful strategy, but you can't help feeling it's a bit passive. What will you do if someone else is already established at the place where the leylines yield the most power, and what's your role in this plan of hers, for that matter? Picking your words carefully, you reply.

"That's certainly a very detailed plan, Caster, but I wonder if it doesn't have some room for improvement. What am I supposed to be doing while all this is going on, for example?"

Caster immediately begins to pout at having her plan criticized, and starts to address your point with, "We~ll..." but you roll over her, trying to get your own suggestion in before the witch can come up with another option.

"I've seen that you empower your familiars with magecraft. Perhaps you could enchant the three of us similarly? Matsuda and I did succeed in fighting a few skeletons before we met you, but compared to Servants, our physical capabilities just don't seem sufficient."

Caster brightens again at the idea. "Ooh, that would be fun! You know, changing the body is really my forte! Once we get my Temple established, I'll start brewing up a medicine that will have you boys fighting on par with heroes in no time!"

As you and Caster have been discussing the tactics of the war, you've covered a fair amount of ground, and the trees are thinning. The soil has dried out as well, and the path of planks has been replaced by a beaten dirt track. Thick underbrush has given way to waist-high, bright green grass, and it isn't long before you exit the forest entirely, to see a wide expanse of tall grass and rolling hills on either side of the path. A breeze flows over the hills, rustling the grass in great waves, and keeping the heat of the now exposed sun from being too intense.

As you continue down the path, hours pass, and the sun rises high into, and then begins to traverse, the dome of blue sky above; it's gotten to be early afternoon by now, and the heat is beating down on the four of you, the morning's breeze no more than a fond memory. It's amazing the difference trees make; the temperature has to be 10 or 15 degrees higher than it was in the forest, though it's still more comfortable than the atmosphere in the infernal city.

You strain your eyes on the horizon, hoping to make out the faint appearance of your destination, but have no such luck. Hills obscure your view to either side of the path, and it must curve somewhere up ahead. In that direction as well, your eyes are met only by the sloping expanse of pale green foliage.

While visual investigation yields nothing, however, your ears do pick up the faint and distant sound of an argument; one side berates with high, feminine tones, while the other sounds low and resigned.

"Ugh! This heat is intolerable! Absolutely ridiculous! How far did that ridiculous priest say it was to the Eighth City, again?"

"Master, it's hardly so warm as the last place we were. Shouldn't this come as a relief to your dainty sensibilities?"

"That's not what I asked, you mannerless ox! How did you ever become a king without learning how to treat a lady?"

"I don't need to answer that, Mistress. Anyway, look there. The city's off in the distance, you can see it now we've crested the hill."

"Well, thank goodness the goal is finally in sight, at least! If I'd known I would be compelled to march like a common soldier over hill and dale, I would have..."

The voices begin to fade, becoming unintelligible. You can still hear where they're coming from, though, somewhere off to your the Northeast. Curious, you quietly move up a hill to your right, crouching to look through the grass for your fellow travelers. Sure enough, you can see two moving figures in the distance. Astounded again at how your sight has improved, you can actually make out a fair amount of detail.
>>
>Rolled 89

Taking the lead is a young woman, around your own age, with heavy blonde curls and an ornate blue dress, possibly silk. She shields herself from the sun with a white parasol. At her side walks an older man, wearing a black cuirass with gold ornamentation, similar boots, and white trousers protected by a segmented waist-guard. He carries a large cloth sack tied to the end of a strangely hooked spear, and slung over one shoulder. In his other hand he carries a bronze helmet, evidently removed due to the heat, and its absence allows his short, wavy hair to blow loosely in the slight breeze.

Deciding to approach the pair, you begin by cautioning Matsuda and Ogawara, "I'm going to greet those two, but stay ready. If this turns into a fight, run. Diplomacy isn't always received in the same spirit it's offered, after all."

Having said your piece, you stand up and start walking across the hills towards the potential other Master. As you walk, Caster begins chanting quietly, making some kind of magical preparations for the battle; the head of her staff is filled with light, but you're not sure what the precise purpose is.
As you get closer to the pair of strangers, you call out to them in the hopes that they'll shorten your walk. The girl doesn't react, but the soldier seems to hear you. He bends down and mutters something in the girl's ear, and before long she's turned, and is heading straight for you.

The six of you meet at the crest of a hill midway between your respective original positions. The soldier, presumably Lancer, has his spear raised in a defensive posture, having laid the bag down by his feet. His opposite number, Caster, has filled her staff with charged energy, ready to launch the explosive destruction of her spells at any moment. The tension between the two of them is palpable.

The girl, on the other hand, seems quite oblivious to the dangerous atmosphere. She raises herself up to her full (unimpressive) height, levels an accusatory finger at you and demands, "Just who are you, and what do you want with me?"

You have to resist a chuckle at this display of utterly unfounded pride. Suppressing your mirth, however, you respond with an air of calm composure. "I could ask you the same question, miss. You walked over to me, after all." The girl's face reddens, but before she can let out an indignant outburst, you continue. "You needn't worry, though, I'll answer instead. My name is Yumigawa Rushorou, and I am the Master of Caster, here." You indicate Caster with a gesture. "Now, I can guess you're another Master, but I think your introduction is in order."

Flustered, the girl takes a half-step back before rallying. "Hmph! That's right, as is obvious, I am the Master of Lancer. And I'll warn you now, if you do anything foolish, he can have your head before that Caster of yours can fire off a spell!" In silent response, Lancer shifts his stance, ready to strike at any time.

Now it's your turn to be flustered, and you rapidly try to resolve the situation. You know from your experience seeing Assassin in motion that Lancer, if he's faster than the 'weak servant,' probably could cut you down faster than Caster could protect you.

"Woah, hang on," you implore, raising your hands in a conciliatory gesture. "I don't want to fight you, just to talk. No need to do anything drastic."

You wait for a moment, before Lancer leans over and mutters to the girl, "He's not lying. Really is just here to talk," before raising his spear into a more relaxed stance.
>>
Seeming mollified by this course of events, the girl continues in a calmer tone. "Ahem. Yes, I was introducing myself. I am Truvietianne Edelfelt, greatest prodigy in 13 generations of the ancient and mighty Edelfelt house! You have my permission to kneel, if the realization of my station has overtaken you. Indeed, I would welcome prostration. I need a proper servant in this hostile climate, especially with this failure of an attendant dogging at my heels."

You remain solidly standing, having never so much as heard of the Edelfelts before today. Before you can formulate a response, though, Lancer has beaten you to it, seizing the opportunity to insult his Master.

"A failure, am I? Well, I suppose it wouldn't be surprising for an unfit noble with no subordinates to summon an unfit servant."

"How dare you!" Truvietianne almost squeaks in shock, "to say such a thing! It over-tops even your prior insults! Must I shoot you down again?"

Lancer, however, remains unmoved. "Go ahead, missy. Your curses have no more sting than a blunt arrow, as far as I'm concerned."

This, apparently, is the straw that breaks Truvietianne's self-restraint. She briskly marches up to Lancer and delivers a sharp kick to the nether regions, sending him crumpling to the ground. As the unfortunate Servant writhes in masculine pain, she levels a dainty finger at him and chants a short incantation, patterns on her forearm lighting up as she does so. Before long, a tiny bolt of darkness issues from her sleeve to strike Lancer's forehead, multiplying his suffering.

How do you respond?

Caster + Lancer combo would be pretty good if we can get along.
Also while Caster knows Age of Gods magic and can teach us the basics, the Edelfelt here can teach us how modern magic is done if we're lucky.
Also I'm betting that Assassin is gonna be Paris maybe.
If so we'll need to watch out for an overpowered NP, possibly instant kill, possibly defence ignoring.
He killed Achilles after all.

Paris was an archer in life, because he was a total pussy, while Assassin is apparently a spearman; furthermore, Paris was known for his handsomeness, but Assassin's face wasn't described at all.

If we do manage a team up then we might be able to find some radios or something in the next city, hopefully.
Magi are worthless with technology and it's an incredibly easy way to communicate.
Alternatively, we've got Caster so we can probably ask her to make something like that.

Why don't we just get some radios and make them into Mystic Codes?

We don't know the state of the next city
If it's in ruins we're out of luck.
If it's just abandoned or is populated we'll be fine.
Also there's a chance that she'll mess up and leave the WalkieTalkie/Radio broadcasting when talking to Lancer if she's planning a betrayal.
I hope we can get along though.

We're arrogant sure, but we know the value of good first impressions.
Especially with death being a possibility.
>>
>>3331408
>Magi are worthless with technology
A well known fact. Truvietianne will probably be unable to use a phone, and I wouldn't be too confident about her ability to use a radio. Our best bet for communication would probably be to rely on Caster's Tool Creation A+

Oh man, "A few hours" turned into 9. At least I'm well-rested now.

>Rolled 18

This girl is... something else. You can hardly believe you're watching someone fail so utterly to get along with their Servant, the one entity supposed to be totally loyal. You let out an involuntary sigh of disappointment, to whisper to Caster, "Was that a different variety of magecraft from what you use? It looks rather... diminutive."

Caster is visibly gratified to see you've noticed her superiority, and makes no effort to restrain her own voice. "Fu~fun. Of course it was a different type! You don't think some little girl using modern magecraft could possibly match the powers of a legendary enchantress such as myself, do you?"

This earns you a furious look from Truvietianne, and you half-wonder if she'll turn her 'curse' on you next. Before she can, though, you quickly seize upon a plan to change the dynamic of the situation. Right now your group all stands about five feet from the girl and her Servant, but you walk directly to her, projecting a confidence that, honestly, is all bluff; the magical formations on her arm are still glowing, and you have the feeling things could go wrong at any moment.
All the same, you get close enough to look down into her eyes, using your superior height (and newfound looks) for a psychological advantage. You consider putting a hand on her shoulder or waist, but decide that would be pushing it too far for a first meeting.
>>
Keeping your voice cool and collected by force of will, you suggest, "Let's put our Servants aside for the moment; I can see you and I are both used to a more refined sort of manners than they show."
Already, the girl is softening. Implying you have the same sort of absurd discord with your servant she does was clearly the way to go. With her mood improved a bit, you press on to your real goal.

"I'd like to propose a partnership between you and I, to be established now, while we remain outside the city that's to be our arena. The affinity between Lancer and Caster is obvious, and I would be honored to work alongside such a manifestly talented magus as yourself."

Now for the clincher. You lean in even closer, bringing your face almost to hers, and whisper, "Does that Servant of yours really seem like a man you can rely on? Walk beside me, and we'll seize victory together."

Truvietianne's face is, at this point, reddening slightly, although her expression makes it unclear whether she's angry or embarassed. Despite having Lancer as an attendant, she's clearly quite unused to spending time around young men, and she rapidly backs off, pushing you away from her at the same time. Having regained her distance, she breathes for a moment before giving you a hard stare, presumably looking for faults.

"...V-very well. Although I'm unsure whether it's wise to remain around such a dubious gentleman as yourself, I can agree to your alliance. This is supposedly a rather chaotic battle, after all; a group of two collaborators could be a rather potent force."

After a brief pause, the girl continues, "However! Know that I will not tolerate any more of such forward behaviour from you! While I can understand the spell my beauty may place on a man, I am far above the reach of one such as you, an anonymous wanderer of no known background!"

As Truvietianne finishes her declaration, silence descends again. How do you respond?

>[ ] "I'm glad you see the important roll an alliance can play here. Now, let's move on to the Eighth City." (Pride)

>[ ] "I'm sure this alliance will benefit us both greatly. Now, in that spirit, why don't you tell me about your Servant? What can Lancer do?" (Self-Preservation)

Excellent, you've gained an ally. Now that this situation has been dealt with, you can continue to...
Wait. There's something you forgot. Matsuda and Ogawara! They've just been standing there, spectating this whole conversation!

Attempting to salvage things, you indicate the two of them with a sweeping hand and explain to Truvietianne, "Oh, I almost forgot. The two others with me are Matsuda-kun and Ogawara-kun. They're other survivors from my city, and we're working together now." Lowering your voice, so only the girl can hear, you continue, "I guess you could call them my attendants," and let out an embarrassed chuckle.

Truvietianne arches a perfect eyebrow; "Oh? You made common cause with the rabble that was around you in that inferno? I must admit I'm shocked. I simply made sure they stayed well away from me, and exited the place as quickly as possible."

Passing a lace handkerchief over her brow, she changes the subject. "Now, if we're quite done being introduced, Yumigawa-kun, let us move on to the Eighth City. I really cannot stand the heat of this wilderness any longer. We must get to some shelter soon."

"Very well then," you assent, "Let's go."

With your group now swelled to six members, the lot of you continue on towards the Eighth City. From the pace you're making, it seems as if you'll arrive by mid-afternoon. As you walk, you...

As you make your way towards the Eighth City, you can't help but wonder about what Cid might have said to the other contestants. Did you all hear the same story, or were there some differences? He certainly didn't seem eager to volunteer information, despite his lengthy answers to the questions you posed. You have the feeling there was plenty left out, simply because you didn't ask about it.
Turning to Truvietianne, you resolve to get the information you need, or at least some part of it, from her. You know she spoke with Cid, after all, from her earlier discussion with Lancer. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to let her find out you were listening in, though.

"Miss Edelfelt," you begin, "Have you encountered a priest since coming here?"

Truvietianne looks irritated at the question, or perhaps at the priest's memory. "Yes, I did. I've never liked those fellows from the Holy Church, and this one certainly did nothing to change my mind. He called himself Ajisartous, and had a very superior attitude. Still, I suppose we owe him some small degree of gratitude for reviving the Holy Grail War."

Interesting response. It certainly seems she ran into the same person you did, and if Truvietianne is familiar with the Grail War and its supposed dissolution, that lends more credence to what Cid told you.

"Yes, I spoke to the same person. I'm concerned about his neutrality, though. If he's the organizer of this War, why would he have a Servant of his own? An Assassin, too. He attacked Caster and I on sight, and then claimed his Servant had taken action on its own!"

At this revelation, Truvietianne is visibly shocked, covering her mouth with a hand as she gasps.

"He attacked you? With a Servant? But that's... very strange, to be sure. I met him in a prairie outside the city I awoke in, bordering this hilly terrain, and he didn't have any Servant with him then. He just walked up out of the distance and started explaining the circumstances of the War. While I did find his demeanor objectionable, there was nothing that extreme."

So Truvietianne wasn't attacked. In that case, could it be his Servant really did escape his control? Not much you can do to find out more on that subject, though. What about that thing she mentioned, the War being 'revived'?

"You said he 'revived' the War. What do you mean by that?"

"Oh, that's simple," Truvietianne responds, looking happy to expound on a more familiar subject, "Although I'd expect someone with your looks to know already. Did the Einzberns not tell you anything?"

You ignore this remark, and just wait for her to finish her explanation.

"At any rate, during my parents' generation, the Holy Grail War was the most prestigious competition among magi in the Association. There was a faction in the Clock Tower that destroyed the ritual needed to have the War, though, and it's no longer possible. That's all I know, really. I've always admired the War's valiant magi, though."
>>
>>3333353
>Somebody managed to restart the Grail War despite it being dismantled
ONE JOB RIN
If this IS actually post F/sn I doubt we'll be seeing a Matou (unless the wormy old man is still kicking) or a Tohsaka (Probably) anyway

As you're discussing the matter of Cid's explanation with Truvietianne, you crest the last hill and finally come to your destination, the Eighth City. Looking down on it from above, you can see that it's a pristine seaside metropolis, quite unlike the place you were in before.
As you gaze at the towers of steel and polished glass, you find that a strange sense of familiar comfort fills you. It's not your city, you can see that, but it's at least a city.
It's your first time seeing the ocean since arriving in this world as well, and out of the corner of your eye you observe that Caster is gazing wordlessly at the expanse of water.

Matsuda is the first to speak, exclaiming, "Now this looks like we're back home! Finally, a real city again, and one set up special for a brawl too!"

Truvietianne follows suit, declaring, "I just hope we can find some proper accommodations. I've never walked so far in one day in my life, and I'm dying for a shower and bed."

Finally, Ogawara mutters "I-I wonder if the, ah, if the electricity works. It d-d-didn't in the last place, but maybe here, er, there'll be a functioning n-network?"

You give a firm nod. Like the rest, you're heartened by the site of a city that hasn't been ravaged, but you can't keep traces of apprehension from your heart. "Remember," you declare, "before anything else, that place is a battlefield. We should stay on guard."

Only Lancer gives a real response to this, smirking as he says, "Whatever else you may be, boy, you're at least cautious."

As the six of you begin your descent towards the city limits, you reflect on your goals. The first thing you want to do is...

>[ ] Establish a base of operations, as Caster suggested. Defense seems to be her specialty, after all. (Self-Preservation)

>[ ] Go looking for other Masters immediately. Now that you have two Servants together, there's no need to fight defensively. (Pride)

>[ ] Explore the city Cid's made for the battle. This kind of place can't just be normal. (Curiosity)

I feel like we should keep Ogawara in the base as a sort of intel/tactics guy, not sure if this city will show up on Google Maps though or if there will even be Internet.
Even if we can't do something like that it's still probably better to not have him become a liability in combat.

This is what you get for giving us B rank luck.
That's like, 40x luckier than the average person going by the rather odd parameter rules.
+ temporarily doubles it
E is supposedly 10x average and it goes up in increments of 10 so A = 50.
So C+ > A

>Rolled 20

As you descend the hill and enter the sprawling city, you're immediately struck by the preternatural stillness. There's none of the sound here that you'd expect from a great city; no cars, no trains, no construction... only bird-calls break the silence.
Before, when you were in the burning city, the sound of flames had been ever-present. After that, you were surrounded by nature, and it was filled with all the background noises one would expect. Here, though, where all the noise that should be produced by the multitude of humanity is absent, the reality of your situation is driven home. You are one of only thirty living souls in this city, built for millions.

It is this prospect, more than any consideration of danger, that saps any will to explore the city or go looking for enemies from you. There's just so much ground to cover, all devoid of life. The only sensible thing to do is establish a base of operations, as Caster suggested, and make a plan of action once you've established a home for your group.

As you walk, you turn to Caster, and ask, "Can you examine the city's leylines, like you said before? I think the best thing to do right now is find a new place to call home."

"Of course," Caster chirps, "Just give me a minute, Master!"

Without waiting for a reply, she spreads her wings and ascends into the air between the city's towers. Far up above, you can see the glimmer of magical energy from her staff as she weaves a spell to scan the area.

>Rolled 68

Before long, you hear Caster's voice, suddenly appearing in your mind. "Alright, Master! The leylines in this area don't intersect perfectly anywhere, and I can't scan the entire city due to its size, but I have found one place that seems suitable. About 4 blocks North and 12 blocks East of your position is an old castle in the middle of a park, where there's a mid-grade confluence. I'll fly there and start establishing my Temple now, you follow along."

After the bizarre communication ends, Caster flits off, true to her word, leaving the rest of you to plod along on the ground. You'll have to have a talk with her once you arrive about this telepathic communication.

Following Caster's instructions, you soon come to an enormous bronze gate in the middle of a high stone wall. A plaque beside the gate proclaims the interior to be the "Eighth Imperial University". So much for the idea of this being an old castle.

It goes beyond a simple 20. Gae Bolg decides that it's going to hit you the instant it's launched. But if your luck is high enough, you can rewrite the rewritten future again so that you don't actually get hit. Luck is a crazy stat and the mechanics surrounding the Gae Bolg are nuts.

Once you enter, though, and make your way down the cobblestone path through the university's sprawling, ornate grounds, the reason for Caster's misconception becomes clear. The central building is a hulking construction of stone and red brick, emulating the style of medieval European castles and cathedrals. The whole thing seems to have been built out of proportion; even the wooden double-doors are at least twenty feet high, and Matsuda clicks his tongue in irritation at the idea of having to live here.

Truvietianne, on the other hand, is practically squealing in delight over the grounds. "Lovely! This is just like the College of Magi, in London! It's even bigger, though, and the gardens are so splendidly designed! To think we have this palace to ourselves!"

Inside, the building is full of the same Gothic splendor as the exterior, with marble flooring, stone walls, and ornate decorations on every surface. There certainly isn't any lack of space...
As you're looking around, Truvietianne, Matsuda, and Ogawara all split off, going their separate directions in exploring the building. Lancer laconically informs you he'll be patrolling the perimeter, and suddenly you're alone.

In a word... massive.
The university looked big from the outside, but it somehow manages to seem even larger on the inside. Lecture halls, classrooms, an enormous banquet hall, a library big enough to serve a city, labs for computer science, chemistry, and engineering, even an underground gymnasium deep in the bowels of the enormous building... it just goes on forever!

There are three other types of rooms that make up the real majority of the space in the university, though: hallways, salons, and dormitories. Enough dormitories to house hundreds of students, and enough hallways to keep every room well apart from its neighbors. All of these hallways are punctuated by salons, small rooms that provide a resting place, like tiny parks or public benches on outside streets.
These salons are simply square or rectangular rooms, filled with seating and artwork, and sided with windows for those on the outer edge of the mammoth building. The university is simply so large that its designers reasoned people would need frequent resting places as they crossed the building.

As for why the place is so enormous, the matter is simple. While most universities, you are aware, spread their facilities between various buildings around a campus, this place has every necessary location for its operation built into the single main building. The grounds outside are completely given over to manicured lawns, carefully tended groves, and ornate gardens replete with flowers, statuary, and fountains.

At first, Truvietianne is ecstatic. The place is beautiful, luxurious, and massive, with well-stocked food supplies, running water, and fully functioning electricity. As the two of you continue to explore, however, her mood gradually sours, until she whines, "Yumigawa-kun, just how much more of this place is there? Surely we don't need to map out the whole of this mammoth construction!"

"That won't do, Miss Edelfelt," you chastise, "what kind of nobility would one be if one consented to live in a castle with unknown regions? An enemy Master could be lying in wait here, and we wouldn't even know it!"

"You're unbelievable," the girl moans in disappointment, "let's at least take a rest here, we've seen enough to be quite sure there is no lack of rooms."

And so, the two of you take a seat in one of the salons. As Truvietianne catches her breath, you...

>[ ] Ask Truvietianne about herself (Write in your questions)

>[ ] Make a suggestion about the war (What?)

>[ ] Get up and leave her, you'll map this place out alone if you have to!

>[ ] Pass the time in silence

This update is taking a while because I have to go back and read about how the Mages' Association is organized.
>>
As you take a rest on the opulent cushions, your eyes drift to Truvietianne's arm; the way it glowed when she punished Lancer for his insolence is stuck in your mind; the magecraft appeared completely different from the kind Caster uses, but all she'd told you was that it was inferior.
Almost unconsciously, the question on your mind drops from your mouth.

"Tell me, Miss Edelfelt, what kind of spell was it that you used on your Servant when we met?"

Turning to meet your eyes, Truvietianne squints her eyes in suspicious irritation. "Didn't you hear enough from that Caster of yours? It was the 'modern magecraft' that can't equal hers! What do you want to know about it for?"

Er, right. Caster had more or less made that a sore spot, hadn't she? You scramble for an excuse, replying, "Well, of course no living magus can match a Caster. Still, I don't know any magecraft myself, so I'm curious about it."

Truvietianne's eyes widen in shock. "Good lord, the Einzberns really didn't tell you anything, did they? I wonder if you were summoned here while incomplete. It's not as if we chose to appear, after all..."

The girl trails off as she fades into consideration of your possible origin. Since you still have no clue what she could be talking about regarding these mysterious 'Einzberns', you remain silent. At length, she comes back to herself and favors you with a slightly pitying smile. It's the first you've seen from her, and you discover that it gives her face a degree of charm unseen in her usual haughty manner.

"Alright then, I'll tell you about my magecraft," she says. "I used the gandr, an old curse from Finland, the home of my family. For most mages, it would be no more than a slow-acting curse of sickness, but we Edelfelts have refined it over the generations into a concentrated projectile of magical energy that strikes with the force of a bullet, following the impact with a powerful curse of illness. Even if a foe is durable enough to withstand the strike with no damage, the fever and nausea that wash over them will ensure they're quite unable to carry on the fight."

As she narrates the benefits of what is clearly her signature technique, Truvietianne seems to swell with pride. Her countenance darkens, though, as she continues, "At least, that's how the gandr would affect most things. Servants can apparently just shrug them off! Isn't that just absurd?"

"Yes," you respond, "Servants really are on a completely different scale from us." The subject clearly infuriates Truvietianne, so you quickly look for another.
>>
"You mentioned that your family, the Edelfelts, have been refining this technique for some time. I'd like to hear more about them, if you don't mind."

Sure enough, at the mention of her prestigious lineage, the light returns to Truvietianne's eyes.

"Of course! You must have been kept totally ignorant of the society of mages. The Edelfelt house is one of the oldest lineages of magi in Western Europe, and we are a central pillar of the Mages' Association headquartered in London. We are also of the highest echelon of nobility in Finland, and would have been the royal line, if the Swedish tyrants hadn't taken over in the 13th century! Since then, we've maintained our status as prominent members of the Mineralogy department of the Clock Tower."

Setting aside the status of her family in Finland, what really interests you is this 'Mages' Association.'

"So, you've mentioned three organizations of magi, the Clock Tower, College of Magi, and the Mages' Association. What are those?"

Truvietianne seems to have resolved her confusion about your ignorance, as she answers quite readily. "The Clock Tower is the informal name for the College of Magi, in London. It's the capital of the worldwide Mages' Association, of which all proper magi are a part. Even your Einzberns, for all that they like to live as hermits, are formally part of the Association. Prospective magi are educated at the College, and it also monitors those who threaten the secrecy of Magecraft and the Moonlit World, dispatching its enforcers to deal with them."

Having finished her impromptu dissertation, Truvietianne stands up, brushing imaginary dust from her dress. "Well now," she proclaims, "I think I've rested enough. Shall we finish exploring our new home?"
>>
By the time you and Truvietianne have finished exploring the University, the sun is setting. Everyone has found a room of their own, and Truvietianne has retired to hers for a long-awaited shower.

Matsuda has holed himself up in his room as well, doing furious pushups and muttering darkly about what he's going to do to Cid.

Ogawara is making himself busy in the University's spacious kitchens, preparing dinner for the six of you. The food stores in the University are full of a nigh-endless variety of ingredients, and the nervous awkwardness that usually animates Ogawara has given way to excitement and vigor.

Caster is engaged in some kind of magical preparations in the university's central tower, presumably setting up barriers and traps.

Lancer continues to patrol the perimeter of the University, showing no interest in the interior.

What will you do before dinner?

I don't have an issue with them, though considering the team we've put together I don't see them being much more than a minor inconvenience unless you bring in some really powerful ones.

I wasn't in the previous quest, so I can't say. I think you're handling the quest pretty well, though.

Come to think of it, you never did check in with Caster after arriving at the university, did you? Now that you have the opportunity to speak with her alone for the first time today, you have some questions for the sorceress.

As you climb the tower to her workshop at the university's pinnacle, the first thing that strikes you is the smell. There's a delicious aroma drifting down from the room at the top of the stairs, with notes of wheat, cheese, garlic, red wine, and olives. Is Caster cooking something?

As you push open the heavy door to to her workshop, you can see she's transformed the place completely. The room is lit by dozens of candles, in a variety of colors, on almost every surface. Beakers, tools, cutting boards, and a variety of implements and ingredients of magic cover a host of marble counters and racks, and in the center of it all is a massive cauldron, bubbling over a magically conjured fire. What was previously a barren observation room has been remade into the perfect image of a witch's workshop.

"Ah, Master," she says, turning to you as you open the door, "Perfect timing! I've just finished cooking some lovely kykeon! Why don't you sit down and enjoy some?"

Before you can respond, whe's somehow waved you into a chair in front of a small table for two, and is sitting across from you, with two bowls of the stuff. It looks to be some kind of wheat porridge, topped with grated feta cheese. It really does smell delicious, and Caster is clearly relishing her portion.

Before eating, though, you want to address your questions.

"Caster, I came up here because there are a few things I'd like to ask you about," you begin.

Caster smiles, and replies in mock hurt, "You mean you didn't just come to see my face? Oh, Master, you're so cruel."

"A-anyway," you reply, refusing to be sidetracked by the joke, "the first thing I wanted to discuss is my face. You guessed correctly that it used to be different, back in the forest. Before I exchanged the coins I woke up here with in that strange artifact, I had black hair; my eyes weren't red, either, and my features were shaped differently, too. It's a subtle change, so it's hard to describe, but I think my face was a bit... softer, maybe? Less prominent cheek bones, not as hard an edge to my nose, little things like that. I was wondering if you had any idea why or how that happened."

As you're explaining this, Caster's expression grows more serious.

"Interesting... Master, last time you told me your story before we met, you explained that you felt as if you'd become stronger after using that goblet. It is odd that someone not from a family of magi would be able to support a Servant..."

She thinks for a moment, then seems to come to a conclusion. "Just stay there, I'm going to use a spell to take a look at you and see if I'm right about what's happened."

While she's chanting, you...

I can't find my goddamn copy of the Odyssey, so I have to use wikipedia, which further infuriates me, but here you go.
I'm spoilering this passage because it has to do with aspects of Caster that you don't know in character, so if you're not yellowanon, ignore it.
"She invited Odysseus' crew to a feast of familiar food, a pottage of cheese and meal, sweetened with honey and laced with wine, but also laced with one of her magical potions and drunk from an enchanted cup"
The term for that 'pottage' is kykeon. It was a common dish in ancient Greece. Odysseus' lieutenant Eurylochus refuses to eat, and returns to Odysseus with a warning.
Odysseus then receives a magic herb from Hermes, Moly, which enables him to eat the kykeon without being cursed.

...shake off the drowsiness. It passes after a moment, and then Caster is finished with her divination. She looks oddly satisfied, for some reason; she's been chipper almost constantly since you met her, but right now she's positively glowing.

"Oh, I knew you could do it," she exclaims, wrapping you in a hug. "No-one's been able to enjoy my cooking properly in so long! Not since that two-faced liar ran out on me..." Her face darkens for a moment, remembering someone from her past, but she quickly brightens again.

"Anyway, I completed the reading of your biology, and I must say it's quite shocking! That artifact really seems to have modified you extensively. You're almost more like a homunculus than an ordinary human, and you've been inundated with a degree of mystery far beyond your own place in time! The details are difficult to explain to you, but you can think of yourself as being more of a conceptual entity, like a phantasmal beast or heroic spirit, than a human. Your increase in physical and magical abilities was caused by that internal shift, as were the visible changes you've noticed."

Having covered the main points of your change, Caster winds down and considers for a moment, before suddenly announcing, "Oh, one more thing! You have magic circuits, and they were definitely created by that artifact! At least, no other humans of your era have them like this, so I'm almost certain. They're very precisely laid out, for one thing, with none of the chaotic fractal design one usually finds in biological magic systems. The other thing is that you have 126 of them! I know you don't know how many that is compared to other magi, but it's quite a few. They're all excellent quality, too, none of the shoddy circuits you get in magi of degraded bloodlines or first generation magi. Why, with enough training you could be a real hero! Imagine, a hero in your day and age!"

Frankly, you're overwhelmed by all this. You're lucky you didn't stand up for the ritual, or you'd have had to slump back into your chair. Caster is looking at you expectantly, though, so you...

Gae Bolg also fucks you up with a shit ton of iron thorns after destroying your heart and destroys your body from the inside out.
It's broken.
Ridiculously so.
It's not just an automatic heart seeker, it's much worse.
Also it's cursed so good luck healing.
>>
>>3336157
That too.
As broken as it is, though, it doesn't have the same "Instant Death" effect that Mystic Eyes of Death Perception have, the effect that Arcueid can recover from.
>>
>>3336164
She recovers from multiple death lines being cut, true.
She'd have definitely died had a death point been hit.
Somehow she creates a new body or something, it's been a while.
Being cut with 17 unhealable strikes isn't as deadly as 1000s of unhealable spikes exploding everywhere through your body.

>126 excellent magic circuits

Local Student Council President becomes the best Master possible.
Shit we could probably sustain two servants with grail back-up.
That's also enough circuits to keep Caster around after the war ends should we want to if she survives.
Yumigawa's OPness is only offset by his crippling lack of info.

>Somehow she creates a new body or something, it's been a while.
She completely remakes herself on a conceptual level to become free of injury.
>Being cut with 17 unhealable strikes isn't as deadly as 1000s of unhealable spikes exploding everywhere through your body.
Consider the differing reasons for the unhealable wounds:
>A: Your body has literally died in those places where you were cut. In the Nasuverse, it's an ironclad rule that nobody currently or recently alive can come back from final death (Heracles doesn't count because he has 12 lives and just goes to a new life instead of dying).
>B: Gae Bolg puts a curse on your wounds, making them unhealable. As a Mystery, Arcueid is very likely strong enough to ignore this totally, because she's the best candidate for Ultimate One of Gaia and you know how lolbroken Ultimate Ones are; besides, there are powers that can resist the application of curses, such as Magic Resistance. What's more, Gae Bolg completely fails if it can't find someone's death like with Scathach, and Arcueid's lines and points of death disappear at night.
The argument that Gae Bolg can kill Arc is nearly as ridiculous as the argument that it can kill Crimson Moon.

Well we'll never know because Nasu can't write a cohesive expanded universe at all.

Anyway we should probably decide on either turtling or going on the offensive.
There's possible benefits to either.
We've got Caster, which gives us a lot of options and we've got a partnership with the Master of Lancer.
>>
>>3336411
For an offensive strat:

>Saber
We can try having Lancer harass enemy Servants with some help from his dogs (if he's Pwyll in this one too) while we and Caster kill the enemy Master. Rule #2 of using a Caster is "Do not go near Sabers".
>Lancer
We'll have to see over the course of the War. After all, we need six Servants in the Grail to make a wish.
>Archer
No information yet, but Lancers excel at fighting Archers (the best example is Cu Chulainn with Protection from Arrows), so I feel confident about this one. We can probably have Circe support Lancer for this one.
>Berserker
The wild card. If it's a powerful one like Heracles or Lancelot, then we might have to work with a third Master; if it's a weak one like Fran then Lancer should be sufficient.
>Rider
Mobility will be the big problem here here: Riders excel in mobility and can be even faster than Lancers who are not Achilles, so we'll need Circe to paralyze them (which she might be able to do, since she was Medea's aunt according to legend).
>Assassin
Caster seems to be good enough to deal with him, but we should have Lancer for backup in case he has any nasty aces up his sleeve.

Defensively, most strats will probably be some variation of turtling or setting up ambushes and traps.
>>
>>3336436
By the way, I really hope it won't come to this, but:

>Caster
Command Seal -> "become an hero again"

Not that I expect anons to ever pursue this course of action, or support it.
>>
>>3336445
You know there's always a problem in telling a Caster to An Hero.
They kind of get to choose how they will do it.
Most other servants will just instantly kill themselves with a weapon.
Caster could potentially kill themselves in a huge spell explosion and kill their Master too.
Also iirc the Berserker is an EX Madness Enchantment type, so they can converse.
The Archer isn't Gilgamesh, at least and is unlikely to be EMIYA.
Also there might be two assassins.
You're forgetting we can probably have Circe put buff spells on Lancer to make him overpowered.
>>
>>3336465
>You're forgetting we can probably have Circe put buff spells on Lancer to make him overpowered.
That's what I meant by "have Circe support Lancer".
>unlikely to be EMIYA
Probably near-impossible, since you need his catalyst to summon him and Rin is the only one who has that.
>>
>>3336498
There are probably other EMIYA summoning catalysts lying around in Fuyuki you could use.
Shirou could probably act as his own catalyst (ala Prelati) before being gutted by EMIYA. (Kind of like how Miyuverse Shirou got his class card I guess)
Also he may or may not be summoned as the avatar of "Nameless Heroes"
But none of these are likely to happen at all.

For what it's worth, I think the first two are a bit iffy.

Oedipus wasn't blind until after he realized who she was and gouged his eyes out.

Helen was made to love Paris by the goddess of love. If we assume the world runs on polytheism, Aphrodite was hanging out all the other love too, so was Helen's experience really that unusual?
The war, obviously, was terrible.
>>
>>3336878
Paris is a little shit and I hope one day Achilles is summoned in the same war as him.

She was already betrothed to Menelaus. He wanted her back and Paris didn't want to give her back: this started the Trojan War.

As an aside, what do you think Paris looks like in the Nasuverse? Like Hector but more of a wimp?
>>
>>3336894
Yes, she was betrothed already. That makes the situation bullshit from Menelaus' perspective. On the other hand, political marriages were very common at the time, and we don't know much about her relationship with him.

IMO, Helen was probably happier with Paris, since that was a love divinely ordained and blessed.

What does he look like? I'd imagine he has the same kind of bishounen design as Alexander Lily and KoGil, just a bit older.

All this information about the changes to your body is a bit too much to handle right now. Sure, it's not as if this isn't an improvement, but what you had before was your body, after all. Maybe putting the subject aside and talking about something else will make it easier.

"Thank you, Caster," you begin, "but now I'd like to discuss something else: our plans for the war."

"Go ahead," she replies brightly, "I'm sure you've worked out a wonderfully clever strategy that you're just dying to share, right?"

"Ahem. Not as such. You could say that I'm in the process of conceiving a strategy." You hadn't realized she expected you to come prepared.

"Oh, that's too bad. All the same, tell me your thoughts! And while we talk, why don't you have a second helping of kykeon?"

Before you can respond, she's already dished you up another bowl. It would be rude to refuse at this point, and it really is delicious...
You decide to eat in between sentences.

"Anyway," you go on, attempting to quickly gloss over the matter, "I have some questions for you about your preferred methods of fighting. First, when it comes to direct battle, what are your preferred methods? I've seen you use familiars as well as direct energy attacks, but how do you fight most effectively?"

"Hmmm..." Caster mulls the matter over for a moment. "If I had to say, my preferred method is not to fight at all. I lived a fairly peaceful life, after all. Killing an enemy while unaware or unconscious, through trickery, is much more reliable than taking your chances on the battlefield. It should be easy enough to handle Lancer and his Master that way, but I suppose it would be difficult with most of the other Servants. If I have to fight directly, I suppose the best thing to do would be to immobilize them with my pets, and then attack them from above with a direct magical assault."

"I see," you reply, considering how this can be used, "Now what about reconnaissance? Can your magecraft help us with gathering information?"

"Oh, certainly! I'm quite adept at scrying and other divining arts, and from my Temple I can remotely view practically anywhere. If you find a location you want to survey, let me know and I can definitely show it to you. I can also detect the presence of enemy Servants and other magical entities over a wide range, although not the entire city."

Useful. You don't have the locations of any enemies yet, but once you've learned more you'll be able to monitor them easily.
>>
>>3337072
I can't believe we got the good end.
>>
"One more thing," you continue, "How about spells of empowerment? I'd like to be able to fight alongside you, but I realize my strength can't match up to a Servant's. Is there anything you can do to enhance my abilities?"

"Ooh, how gallant!" Caster exclaims. "Of course, I'd be happy to help with that. Blessing heroes with greater strength, wits, and things like that has always been a specialty of mine. Let's see..." She thinks the matter over for a moment before resuming. "Usually I'd make you a potion, but your new body makes that a bit of a non-starter. Instead, I'll use the magical link between us that supplies me with energy in reverse, empowering you with the same reinforcement I usually use to strengthen my familiars! It'll only be the a temporary boost, but while it's active you'll be strong enough to fight like a real hero! Kyaha~!"

"Wonderful! Now, the next thing I wanted to ask was..."

You're interrupted by the sound of a bell ringing near Caster's door.

"Oh, I set that up to let me know when Ogawara-kun had dinner ready for you boys. Why don't we go down to the dining room?"

Suddenly you remember. Ogawara was working up a feast down in the kitchens, and you've been up here wolfing down Caster's delicious kykeon. This is a problem...

>[ ] Go down and eat dinner anyway. Just try to power through.

>[ ] Go down and eat dinner anyway. Just try to power through.
Also I've had an idea.
If we're in 2019 we should try and find some electronics stores to raid.
See if we can't find some Drones with cameras (possibly microphones also somehow)
I think most bounded fields are designed to react to organic stuff or magic stuff so tech would blindside them.
Of course Caster can use familiars to scout but we could use drones to give Ogawara something to do and to capitalise on Magi tech ineptitude, Caster can't scry on everything at once, afterall.

I don't know, I feel that they would want anti-drone fields to keep normalfags away.
>>
>>3337314
Rin can barely use a DVD player and she's one of the better Magi when it comes to modern stuff.
Most magi purposely live without modern tech out of stubborness.
I doubt most would even know what a Drone is.
>>
>>3337325
Rin is one of the better orthodox Magi.
An unorthodox Magus or a hedge-mage would know better, and I don't want to find out the hard way if there are any.
>>
>>3337335
Unorthodox magi are incredibly rare.
They also tend to have no interest in the Root and no real reason to engage in the ultimate death match unless they are dumb enough to buy into the whole "winner gets a wish" thing.
If there IS a Kiritsugu type figure around we should be less worried about our drones not working and more worried about getting our skull plastered over the sidewalk by a high caliber bullet.
>>
>>3337205
>[ ] Go down and eat dinner anyway. Just try to power through.

>>3337352
Motivation doesn't matter for who's involved in this grail war, since a bunch of people just got sucked out of their lives and into this deathmatch. If anything, I'd say an unorthodox mage is more likely than most to have survived one of the seven cities simply because they have a strange skill set.
Regardless, we ought to make use of every advantage we can get our hands on, and if that means hooking Ogawara up with a shitload of tech then we should do it.

You can eat more. You're... pretty sure of it, at least. In any case, to skip Ogawara's dinner would be cruel.

When you and Caster arrive in the dining hall, you find the other four members of your impromptu band already seated; looking comically dwarfed by the enormous room and tables. It has given Ogawara plenty of space to lay out the food, though. There is a spread.

Looking over the table you see gyoza, salad, tonkatsu, kitsune udon, nikujaga, and an enormous heap of rice, all served up in their own separate dishes, with serving utensils to divide them between the group. Presiding over it all, Ogawara looks a bit sheepish.

"I g-guess I, er, went a bit crazy. It was just so g-great having access to so many, ah, ingredients, and with such a h-huge kitchen to work in, I, well, er, I could make all th-this at the s-same time! D-don't feel the need to e-eat it all, everyone."

As you and Caster take your seats, you notice that the reactions of the others vary quite a bit. Matsuda has already begun to eat with gusto, filling his plate and bowl before you'd arrived. Truvietianne is looking at the food disdainfully, as if it's some totally alien dish. Finally, Lancer is showing the most emotion you've seen from him so far, his eyes darting between the food and Truvietianne. It's clear that he's eager to eat, but waiting for his Master to begin.

Although the food is delicious, you can't eat much of it. You only manage a few bites of each dish, and as Matsuda watches you pick at it, you can see he's a bit hurt. No doubt this is compounded by Truvietianne's reluctance. Fortunately, Lancer has enough of an appetite to compensate for the rest of you. For a short time, he and Matsuda seem to be competing for who can consume the most food, the fastest, but Matsuda has to drop out after his third helping. The rest of the table's food all vanishes into Lancer's insatiable maw.

"Ah, this is truly lovely, young man! This feast rivals the finest constructions of my own cooks. You have a promising career ahead of you!"

The praise heartens Ogawara, and with that dinner comes to an end. With the food and dishes cleared away, it's time to discuss your plans for the following day. How do you intend to prosecute the War?

What I’m thinking we can do is have lancer “patrol” closely around the Uni (but not in an obviously circular pattern, this is key) and try to draw enemy servants into our domain by feigning weakness. This is a method that maximizes our strengths while minimizing our weaknesses (our weaknesses of course being the master’s relative fragility). Plus, once we have people in the trap, we can go full “just as planned” and “your efforts are useless against my genius”

With dinner at an end, you stand, palms flat on the table, and proclaim to the others your decision regarding the Holy Grail War.

"I've been considering our next move in this War, and I've come to a decision. Tomorrow we should begin exploring the city and searching for supplies. We still don't know much about what's out there, and a lack of knowledge could make for dire consequences."

"Oh?" Truvietianne responds, cocking an eyebrow. "And just why is it that you feel that you can make the decisions for all of us, Yumigawa-kun? However those two feel about you," and here she waves a dismissive hand toward Matsuda and Ogawara, "I don't remember making any decision to become your subordinate."

Your reply is firm and confident. You're used to her haughy attitude by now. "No matter. I'm making a suggestion; feel free to follow or disregard it once you've heard the details."

"Alright then," the girl replies, mollified.

"Now," you continue, "I've been considering how we can best make use of each of our strengths, and what sticks out to me the most right now is Ogawara-kun."

"Huh? M-me?" The shorter boy is visibly shocked. He was, perhaps, considering himself a bystander in all this.

"Yes. You clearly prefer to remain indoors rather than out, you have difficulty speaking, and you've made several references to anime. This suggests to me that you are a certain type of person. Ogawara-kun, do you have any ability with technology?"

"W-well," he replies nerbously, "I suppose I have some. I'm h-hardly a genius, y-you know, but, ah, I h-have built a f-few computers a-and, er, and whatnot."

"Good enough!" you proclaim. "We are going to go looking for drones tomorrow. I've heard marvelous things about them. Remotely controled flying cameras! Ogawara-kun, this university has a computer lab. Once we bring you a few drones, you can get them set up for us to supplement Caster's scrying with a non-magical information network!"

"I-I'll do my best..." Ogawara promises weakly.

Somehow this suggestion has managed to offend both Caster and Truvietianne, who make remarkably similar sniffs of disdain. Neither comments, however.

"Moving on, Matsuda-kun. You promised to repay me in this war, and that means you'll have to fight. To that end, we're going to be looking for weapons for you tomorrow. What do you say?"

Unlike Ogawara, Matsuda is clearly excited by the prospect. He leaps to his feet, ascenting, "Osu! Can't wait to get back into the action!"

Your planning session concluded, the lot of you retire to your respective rooms, and you fall asleep once more with Caster's shining eyes as the last light in the darkness.

End of Day 2

Tonight, you dream only of the dark and raging sea; of ships, crushed on rocks, and of a hatred that is never quenched.

The sea calls your name in enticing whispers, waves lapping at a soft shore.

Whether loud or quiet, enticing or furious, the sea cannot bring you forth again. You'll never again depart from-"

After reviewing Caster's projection of the layout of the city, you decide to head West. That way ought to have the highest concentration of shops, as it's on the edge of the downtown area. North would likely be all office buildings, and you highly doubt either of the other directions would have electronics stores.

Initially you'd planned to go out with all six of you, but Caster begs off, explaining that she'd prefer to stay and do more work optimizing the mana-collection abilities of her Temple and reinforcing the wards on the university. Matsuda, likewise, dismisses an expedition in search of appliances as "just some shoppin' trip," and remains.

This leaves the expedition to you, Truvietianne, Lancer, and Ogawara. Almost as soon as you've begun, Truvietianne begins interrogating you about your plan to use drones.

"Just why do you want to use machines for reconnaissance anyway? Can't you survey the city well enough with Caster's help? Don't tell me she can't use remote viewing magecraft."

"Well," you explain, "It's not that she can't, exactly. Caster could certainly handle our intelligence with scrying. The problem is diversity." Taking a more authoritative, lecturing tone, you continue. "Suppose we hadn't formed an alliance, and that I were attempting to determine your movements. You're an experienced magus, and as you've just demonstrated, expect that from the Caster-class servant. So, it makes sense to assume that any other magi in the war will have prepared some kind of countermeasures against remote viewing.
On the other hand, they may not be expecting reconnaissance through mechanical means. If we're fortunate, I'd imagine we can take at least one Master totally by surprise thanks to this method."

Truvietianne is having none of it. "Hmph," she pouts, "I'd never believe you were created by the Einzberns if it weren't so obvious. Now there's a family of magi with the proper attitude towards mundane technology."

Lancer is more receptive, though, chuckling at Truvietianne's display of rigidity. "I think he's got you, Mistress. I can't tell you how many times I'd've died if I'd only had my first plan to rely on."

"Well, Lancer," Truvietianne replies coolly, "that only attests to the inadequacy of your initial plans."
>>
After a few hours of walking through the suburbs, the four of you reach the riverside business district. Or at least, a business district was what you expected. Unfortunately, it seems that the area is actually a high-density residential neighborhood, full of high-rise condominiums and luxury apartment buildings, all empty of life. There are a decent number of restaurants, grocery stores, and clothing stores, but no electronics stores.

After hunting around the area for a while, one bit of fortune does descend. A sporting goods outlet! Although it's as empty of people as the rest of the area, it does have a wide range of possible weapons for Matsuda. After some consideration, you take a wooden baseball bat, an aluminum baseball bat, and a bokuto.

It's while you're gathering these items that you hear footsteps on the street outside. Two sets; one soft, from shoes, the other clanking loudly. Lancer tenses into a battle posture, but Truvietianne signals him to be silent.

You can hear voices wafting in through the windows. Both male.

The first calls out, in resonant, booming tones that echo off the silent street, "Come out here, enemy Servant! I know you're around here somewhere, so show yourself before my blade! Let's fight as befits true men, with no craven stealth or trickery!"

The second man sounds older, and speaks in a low, well modulated pitch that puts you in mind of a middle-aged banker. "Now, Saber, why don't you just calm yourself. If the enemy doesn't want to fight yet, there's nothing we can do. Just wait, and they'll come to us in time."

"Silence," Saber roars, "You think I'll simply wait for the foe to come to me? Waiting is for those who fall. Those who fail their responsibilities and themselves! Great men always strike first!"

The other man simply sighs, before replying in the same calm voice, "Sometimes, Saber, waiting is a form of strike. To receive no blows, wait for the enemy to show weakness, and cut them down in that moment. Wouldn't you say that is also a first strike, of a kind?"

This is the moment. There are only the two of them, and you're confident that you have a plan for victory.

While the enemy duo debates their proper course, you turn to Truvietianne and whisper, "I think we can handle them. The Servant sounds like he's looking for a straight fight with Lancer. Let's give him that, and take out the Master in the meantime."

"I think that could work," Truvietianne mutters, "Lancer. Attack them!"

The two of you quickly follow Lancer out into the street, leaving Ogawara to hide in the shop. You take the aluminum bat with you to use a weapon, since you have no real martial arts experience.

In front of you stand the two enemies, your first real opponents in this "tournament" of Cid's, and a thrill runs through you to think that you stand on the precipice of a victory.

On the right is Saber, a tall young man, perhaps a decade your senior, clad in ornate steel armor, with a longsword at his hip. He wears no helmet, but an opulent gem-encrusted crown rests on his short blond hair. At his breast is pinned a purple cloak, which covers the right-hand side of his body. The man has a handsom, youthful face, and you find yourself wondering how such a deep voice was produced by his slight frame.

On the left is the Master. His voice, unlike Saber's, is a perfect fit for his appearance. Of average height and build, he's a middle-aged European man in a well-taylored double-breasted suit. Burgundy, with subtle pinstripes. His hair is red and wavy, slicked back against his scalp in an out-of-date style that puts you in mind of black and white American films. On his nose rests a pair of perfectly round spectacles.

Saber's Master just has time to utter, "Impossible! One of the Einzberns'-" before the sound of clashing steel drowns him out. You can just barely follow the battle as Lancer repeatedly strikes at Saber's neck with his hooked blade; Saber is on the defensive, barely having time to react and clearly wrong-footed by the unusual shape. As the fight in the middle of the street rages, Truvietianne levels a glowing arm towards the enemy Master and begins a chant.

What do you do?

Saber's a king. If the crown wasn't enough the purple cloak confirmed it.

He doesn't seem to have experience with that kind of spear: that means he might be inexperienced as a fighter or just not have lived in or near Wales, so maybe he was from the mainland.

Before the enemy Master has time to react, you're leaping forward, kicking off the ground to charge in at him with the aluminum bat. You can't help but be amazed again at how light your body feels, how time seems to slow down as you attack. Is this what it feels like to be a hero, a person truly beyond the ordinary?

Evidently the enemy wasn't as unprepared as you had expected, unfortunately. Before you can fully close the distance, he flicks a pebble to the cement at his feet, calling "Berkano-Ehwaz!"
A strange symbol glows on the toe of the enemy Master's shoe, and just as you're bringing the bat down to strike at his head, the cement leaps up into a protective wall, about the size of a door. Your strike takes a chunk out of the shield, but the enemy is unharmed.
As you pull the bat free of the standing cement, it suddenly reshapes again, bursting outwards at you in a strike to the stomach. You react in time to block with your forearms, but the force of the stone knocks you back several feet. The shattered cement dots the ground between you and the enemy.

You're now standing about halfway between Truvietianne and the enemy Master, who's in the open once more. As you catch your breath, Truvietianne launches a gandr over your shoulder, but the energy is neutralized by some kind of mana shield around the foe.

"Very good," he proclaims. "I'm impressed, young lady, it's true. To think you found an Einzbern combat homunculus amongst this random scattering of humanity, and made it into your attendant! It really is the action of a prudent and powerful magus."

"Frankly," he continues, "it saddens me to think that I'll have no choice but to wipe the two of you out today. You have such potential; I'd like to have you as a student."

As the enemy Master makes this speech, Truvietianne fires a few more token shots of gandr, but they're repelled as easily as the first. To your right, the battle between Lancer and Saber continues without a clear winner. You can see that the enemy used the moment he spent behind his cement shield to quickly inscribe a simple magic circle on the pavement in chalk. It seems to be the origin of his shield.

"Since we are both magi," the enemy continues, "It seems that proper introductions are in order. I am Sean Conmara O'Mordha, professor in mineralogical application of runes at the Clock Tower. May I have your name, young lady?"

You can hear Truvietianne click her tongue in frustration behind you, but her upbringing compels her to reply with proper manners.

"You may call me..."

You get your wind back as Truvietianne is talking. It may be possible to get a better strike in on the enemy magus now.

"...Truvietianne Edelfelt, heir to the Edelfelt house of magi, and..."

As Truvietianne introduces herself, you launch into a second attack. Since a straightforward charge proved useless, this time you keep yourself as low to the ground as possible and circle to the right, hoping that the shockwaves and bursts of powdered cement from the Servants' battle will mask your approach. This tactic is suddenly made extraneous, however, as a gout of blood spurts in your direction.

There's stillness from the two Servants as all eyes turn to them, frozen in the moment of the successful strike. Saber overextended himself in a lunge towards Lancer's heart. Lancer was faster, however, and slid by the attack to bring his hooked blade down into the gap between pauldron and bracer, cutting deep into the muscle of Saber's shoulder.

A second spurt of blood flies as Lancer withdraws his blade with a flourish, and Saber's left arm collapses limply to his side. In the moment of stillness, one voice sounds.

"Saber! As your Master, I command you: escape!"

You turn again to see a red flash from O'Mordha's outstretched hand, and as you do Saber streaks by you, exponentially faster than he had been while fighting. Then the two are gone, vanished too quickly for you to track their movements.

I'd imagine most Magi would explode at the concept of creating permanent magic circuits and a superhuman body.
Though I kind of think we should wait for Caster's presence declaring ourselves "not Einzbern" may lower her guard as we'd be truly unaffiliated.

No. But we should eventually. Was just floating the idea out there to see what others thought.

>>

That might be best. Gather everyone around. Bring it up, and if she doesn't want to have anything to do with us we can end the alliance and go out separate ways. But I dont think it's right to keep her in the dark when everyone else knows about the change.
>>
>>3339455
>I'd imagine most Magi would explode at the concept of creating permanent magic circuits and a superhuman body.
And also the possibility that the Third Magic was rediscovered/recreated.

White hair and red eyes are an unusual combination and being a protagonist guarantees that Yumi will be good-looking.
>>3339489
Oh, right, what do we need to say to Truvi to avoid getting down with the sickness?
>>
>>3339497
Well I would ask her to hear us out completely before acting on anything, let us tell the full story without interruptions. Explain when the change happened and when we found out. Inform her that after that we ran into her. After our talk with her we went and talked to caster about the change. Be honest any day we weren't sure of telling Truviet at that time, plus caster would tell the hard truth about anything we might have needed to hear.
>>
>>3339504
If she gets angry or defensive, point out it was out of safety and point out logically there is a high chance she has omitted information from us to keep herself safe, or there might be things about herself that she hasn't felt the need to share. Maybe state or simply this is a show of trust in her.
>>
>>3339504
"Also I've told you my name is Rushorou Yumigawa, doesn't sound very Germanic does it?"
Also say we have 126 magic circuits, whatever that means.
Caster seemed fairly impressed.
We have to remember that a lot of the people in this war won't have joined it fully ready to murder.
>>
>>3339506
I feel like that would cover most everything, gives an open invitation for her to ask more/tell more, and shows that we genuinely want this alliance to work.
>>
>>3339511
This will only lead to drowning in saliva.
>>
>>3339511
I wouldn't tell her about the number magic circuits, unless she asks. Because that might make her on edge against us.
>>
And with all that I also get some sleep.
>>
>>3339514

>>
Hah.
I just realised that killing us now won't actually help her get rid of Caster and will instead just serve to anger Caster
Caster will have ample time to contract with Matsuda (a suitable master by Cid's own word) so killing us here and now is meaningless and will only serve to anger Caster.
Kidnapping us?
Sure, if you think you can somehow avoid being scryed on by her.
>>
>>3339523
Dangerous to assume that Yumigawa would be the drooler
>>3339527
>Caster will have ample time to contract with Matsuda (a suitable master by Cid's own word) so killing us here and now is meaningless and will only serve to anger Caster.
Truvi doesn't know that, though, does she?
>>
>>3339543
She's a smart girl, she'll figure out somethings up what with the thousand people summoned

>>

>>
>>3339634

>thousand people
?
>>3339655
Yes. We keep the big number a secret for now.
>>
>>3339655
Depends on if she asks and mentions her own or if you want to waifu her/be experimented on
Rin had 100 total INCLUDING her crest.
Also I can't remember if Rin was mentioned to have excellent quality circuits.
Probably.
>>
>>3339679
Cid mentioned 1050 odd people got summoned as potential masters
There are 30 survivors.
>>
>>3339682
>1050 odd
Looking at the original post, he said "1050", so maybe that was an exact figure.
>>
>>3339680
>Rin: 40 inborn Magic Circuits and subs that are 30 each.
Luvia's the one with 100.
For reference, an "average" Magus has 20.
>>
>>3339722
Of average quality, at that.
>>
Hey there, folks. To clear up some points:
There were exactly 1,050 people summoned. 150 in each of the 7 cities.
Rin had 40 inborn magic circuits and 30 magic circuits from her crest.
Luvia had 100 magic circuits split between inborn and crest, but we don't know the proportion.
You have 126 magic circuits with no crest.
>>
>>3339822
>You have 126 magic circuits with no crest.
Yeah, a Magus with as many circuits as us of quality as high as I expect Heaven's Feels to make would be pretty important.
>>
So, to recap:
>Wait until we get to the university and are safely within Caster's territory
>Explain that we aren't an Einzbern homonculus and instead a somehow modified human
>Don't reveal number or quality of magic circuits (unless perhaps asked)
>If Truvi gets uppity, tell her it was for safety and she's probably hidden information from us as well; also point out that she already knows our name, which doesn't sound Germanic or include "Einzbern"
>If she wants to break off the alliance, fine - we'll let her go
Is this correct?
I think it's also worth mentioning once she's inevitably displeased that this information doesn't really change anything. We've been pretty forward about how little we know by asking questions, and she's seen our physical capabilities thanks to our little scuffle with Sean. She can break off our alliance if she wants, but there's no functional difference in Rushorou's abilities caused by the fact that we aren't Einzbern.
>>
>>3339822
>You have 126 magic circuits with no crest.
And ever single one of them are the cream of the crop; god help us if any of the eccentric types find out.
>>
>>3339833
Yeah, I kind of expected you to lowball that d100.
>>
>>3339832
Yeah, that's all correct.
>we aren't Einzbern
Only by name. We might be genetically Einzbern, since all the Einzbern homunculi are based off of Justeaze.
>>Referred to as the "Primeval Justeaze", all subsequent homunculi of the Einzberns were manufactured to the standard of her make and used her as their model.
>>
>>3339837

What does the Emperor Tiberius have to do with this? Is he sponsoring this Grail War or something? And what does ROMA have to say about that?

Clearly we're secretly a Roman emperor incarnated into the body of a Japanese Highschooler.

Saber and O'Mordha are gone, and the fight is over. You lean against the wall of a building, waiting for the adrenaline to leave your system, only to realize how calm you feel.
There's no adrenaline rush, no nervousness, none of the physical symptoms one would normally expect from a situation of life-or-death peril. Perhaps this is another aspect of your new body.

Walking back into the sporting goods shop, you find Ogawara leaning over the back of a chair, having obviously been watching the fight. "Come on," you say, "we're going back to the university." Without giving him time to respond, you spin on your heel and walk back out.

It's frustrating. Extremely frustrating. For all the calm you felt in the moments of danger, you now find yourself grinding your teeth in irritation. You couldn't do a thing to the enemy Master, and it was Lancer who put an end to the battle. Caster said you had what it took to be a hero, but if you can't handle a college professor, you have to wonder whether or not she had the wrong idea.

The walk back to the university passes in silence, as Truvietianne writes in a pocket notebook, muttering about curse barrier penetration, and you fume about your lack of success.

At length, you arrive, dropping off the weapons with Matsuda. He looks curious about what happened, but you put it off for later explanation. Fortunately, Caster is still in her tower; you're sure she'd waylay you, full of concern, and right now you have more pressing matters on your mind.

You follow Truvietianne back to her room with her unawares, nose still buried in her notebook. She only notices you when you close the door behind yourself, and then she lets out an indignant gasp.

"Yumigawa-kun! What are you doing in here? Did you just follow me through the university?"

"Yes," you reply flatly, "and I'd like you to explain something for me."

"Fine then. Give me your questions, and make it quick."

"Alright. What I'd like you to tell me," you begin, "is why every magus I've met here is under the impression I'm some kind of homunculus made by these Einzbern people."

For a moment, Truvietianne is frozen. Completely silent, mouth hanging open in shock. Then she pulls herself together.
>>
"What do you mean, you're obviously-"

You cut her off. "I know, it's 'obvious', you've said that before. The fact is, though, that I'm not a homunculus of any kind. I was born in a normal family, lived a normal life, and was brought here unawares. I know the goblet that summoned Caster changed me somehow, altered my body, but why would that make people assume I'm this homunculus thing?"

"Well," she exclaims indignantly, "thank you for so kindly informing me of that when I was making a fool of myself feeling sorry for you over the inhuman treatments the Einzberns put their creations through!"

"Look," you try to salvage, "I didn't realize that it meant so much to you. I'm sure there are details of your life that you haven't told me, and besides; you already knew my name, which hardly sounds German."

"Oh, you conniving snake!" she shouts, "Get out of my room this instant! If you must know, it's your eyes and hair that mark you as a homunculus! Now, I'm not speaking to you further! Get out!"

And with that, you're rushed out of Truvietianne's room, the door slammed in your face. That didn't go so well.
With Truvietianne closed off, you have a few options for the afternoon...

>[ ] Go see Matsuda, have him teach you to fight. With some proper methods, you can hopefully avoid a repeat of today's performance.

Hopefully Truvi's just embarrassed and will get over it. Regardless, we should learn how to handle our new body, since there's no way in hell that's the only master we'll be taking on.
>>
>>3340042
>[ ] Go see Matsuda, have him teach you to fight. With some proper methods, you can hopefully avoid a repeat of today's performance.
I want to talk to Circe and see if we can start learning some very basic Magecraft. I want to start progressing toward full-body Reinforcement.
>>
Granted, Matsuda probably wouldn't know anymore than brawling...
>>
>>3340160
Idk, he seems pretty well put together as far as Japanese delinquents go. Probably can teach our boy how to throw a proper jab at least
>>
>>3340306
I guess. Wait, how are we gonna train with Matsuda without accidentally launching him into a wall?
>>
>>3340306
Bear in mind we could probably punch straight through most gym equipment and probably crack concrete with a solid punch.
Hell, with reinforcement we'd be even stronger.
With Caster Buffs we'd be unstoppable.
Also we apparently have mystery so we'd be able to damage servants without even using our magecraft.
Truvi is MUCH better suited to teaching us magecraft than Caster is anyway.
So I hope she's not too mad.
Asking Caster to teach us magecraft is like asking a university professor to teach pre-schoolers.
>>3340329
Have Caster try out her enhancements on him?
>>
>>3340346
>Have Caster try out her enhancements on him?

It's more of give the option of others to talk to us. There is no reason we have to initiate every conversation with everyone.
My main goal is to give us time to reflect and see how we feel about everything. After all something changed us. We might have the same mind and soul, but our body isn't the same. When we get back home, we will be displaced, our parents, school friends won't recognize us. Sure we are stronger and have magic circuits, but at the end of the day after the war is over we are going home to nothing familiar.

For a moment you consider going to talk with Matsuda and getting his advice on how to fight more effectively. He seems like an experienced brawler, after all; but the idea flees your mind. Right now, you're just too overwhelmed. In the last three days you've been abducted from your home, discovered the existence of magic, faced death almost constantly, and even had your own body fundamentally changed.
You're not even sure if it's the same body, really. Are you still you, or have you become someone else; some other entity?

As these thoughts run through your head, you wander out of the towering castle that is the Eighth Imperial University. You need fresh air, and space to think alone, not the feeling of being underneath all that piled stone.

Heading out a back exit, you wander along a winding gravel path for a while, passing fountains, topiary animals, and Romanesque statues depicting various gods from all pantheons. Eventually, you find that you've reached a rose garden, where all other ornaments give way to great beds of multicolored roses. The bushes aren't laid out in groups by color, as one usually might, but are mixed together, so that red, white, pink, and yellow flowers all appear side-by-side. The whole place has a calming, spellbinding air, and you decide it's just the spot to really think through what's happened, taking a seat on one of the benches.

Leaning back, arms outstretched on the bench, an idea occurs to you that you hadn't considered up until now. It seems odd that it hadn't come to mind, and yet...

'Home, huh? I wonder what's waiting for me there. With a different face, is anyone going to recognize me? Would Father and Mother accept that I'm their son, or turn me away?'

'How am I going to get home, anyway? That priest talked about how he brought us here, but he didn't say anything about sending us back. If winning the war is supposed to grant me a wish, am I going to have to use it just to get back to reality?'

'For that matter, do I even want to go home? Now that I look back on it, I never felt things so intensely before. Every day, I was just repeating the same actions for no reason. Father said that becoming a successful executive and rising high in society would make me happy, so I succeeded in school and learned how to get people to support me; but he never seemed happy with his success, just more drained all the time. Is that what I was working towards?'
>>
'Since the War began, I've felt like I can really step outside that world. Like I can be someone, above the ordinary grain. After all, haven't I proved it already? Of over a thousand people sent here, I was one of only seven to survive and get a Servant. According to Caster, I've already gone beyond the realm of humanity, and become some kind of... what did she call it, again? Conceptual entity?'

'The world of the magi values strength and aptitude, that's obvious from the behavior of Truvietianne and Saber's Master, O'Mordha. If I can convince Caster to teach me her ancient magic, maybe I could forge a new identity for myself, as a magus.

'No, as a more than an ordinary magus; as someone bringing the strength of legends back into the living world! To hell with my old identity, I don't need it anymore! There's no reason to constrain my ambition to the heights my father reached! I'll come out of this War, and with the power of my Wish, I'll climb to the summit of that Mages' Association Truvietianne was talking about!'

The wish of Pride has been discovered through introspection:
Regnum Iustus: Authority attained through merit, power without upper bound

As you come to your new resolution, you suddenly feel a shift in... not the air, but some other sense, beyond the five. It's the first time you've been able to identify it, but you've been feeling it since the change. Is this the detection of magical energy Caster spoke of? You've only felt it this powerfully when a Servant is around, up until now.

A cold, calm male voice speaks from just behind you.

"Hello," the unidentified stranger says, lacing his tone with just a trace of humor, and the barest hint of question, prompting you to respond.

Yumigawa doesn't know that. I chose to stay still because we fear any deviation from our current position would give them enough reason to kill us.

If the enemy crept up behind us, that means they don't want to be in front of us, and turning around could convince this guy to fuck us up.

That's reasonable. And maybe I'm putting too much faith in my gut feeling that we can turn and talk face to face.

If it is a Servant speaking, he's got you dead to rights. Better to just stay still for now.

"...hello. Who are you, and how did you get in?"

You hear the man exhale, and a puff of smoke drifts past the side of your head. After a long pause, he replies, "Friend of mine once told me that a man's life depends upon his information." He pauses again, perhaps for another drag. "In fact, the merest scrap of it can make all the difference."

With an incredible force of will, you restrain yourself from leaping to your feet and demanding that this man explain himself.

"In your case," he continues slowly, easing each word out as if stretching the moment for his enjoyment, "your life depended on the information that there was an enemy Servant who could..."

Another puff of smoke.

"Sort of, muscle his way through a weak spot in your barrier, here. Now," he finishes, as you hear a slow mechanical clicking and the slide of metal on metal just behind your head, "there are six Masters in the-"

"You stop that, Archer!"

All tension in the moment is dissipated, as Archer's self-indulgent declaration is cut short by the high, feminine voice of a teenage girl.

"Wha- Kikuko, we've got this idiot cold," Archer exclaims, his smug demeanor evaporating.

"I said no, Archer!" The girl behind you, Kikuko, is insistent. "I told you before we left, we're going to talk to these people! Just listen to me, if I'm supposed to be your 'Master'!"

Archer heaves a sigh, and Kikuko walks around the bench to take a seat next to you. As you guessed from her voice, she is indeed a high-school girl, your age and wearing a summer sailor uniform. She has long black hair, and wears a friendly smile.

"Hi," she begins brightly, "I'm Munahara Kikuko. Sorry we got off on the wrong foot, there. Archer's a bit..." she puts a finger to her lips as she considers, "over-eager, I guess you'd say. He's totally into this whole 'take no prisoners' thing."

The girl is carrying a school bag as well as a plastic bag from a convenience store, and as you watch, flabbergasted, she pulls out a pair of water bottles and cans of coffee.

"Here," she says, proffering a water bottle, "It's so hot today, isn't it?"

"Er, yes," you reply, taking the bottle. "I suppose it is a bit warm."

"Right? Anyway, this whole War thing that Cid guy was talking about is so crazy, isn't it? Wanting us to kill people we don't even know, and stuff? It's totally bizarre. So, when Archer saw your school uniform, I figured 'hey, that guy's a student just like me! I bet we can totally get together and figure it out!' So, here I am!"

"I see," is the only answer you can come up with at first, as you try to process the girl's bizarre mode of thought. "I'm Yumigawa Rushorou, it's a pleasure to-"

Before you can continue your introduction, a burst of light shines from above, and the bench between you and Kikuko is shattered. You leap backwards, avoiding the explosion to see Caster standing defensively in front of you, staff outstretched. Across a small crater, Archer holds a protesting Kikuko under one arm, his revolver in the other hand. You can now see that he's a tall Caucasian man, dressed in antiquated Western clothing. A dark brown hat rests on his light brown hair, and as you guessed, he's smoking a cigar.

"Lucky," Archer hisses, before dashing into the trees, vanishing in the forest's shadows. Trailing behind him, you can faintly hear Kikuko calling, "Good to meet you, Yumigawa-kun! Byeee~"

You leap to your feet, spinning around. Before you can catch sight of your enemy, though, you're deafened by thunderous noise and blinded by a flash of light.

As you slump to the ground, bleeding from a neck that's barely still attached, you can barely make out a conversation through your ringing ears.

A girl's voice: "Archer, why did you do that! I didn't tell you to kill him!"

The voice of the man who first spoke, still audibly smirking: "In my experience, when a man jumps up like that, he's gonna do one of two things. He'll either attack you, or he'll die. I just gave him some help choosing."

Forgot to post this with the update, but Status Updated.

While I write up the next plot segment, tell me. What do you folks think of Kikuko and Archer, our newest characters?
>>
>>3341729
Archer is a smart jerk.
I do not trust kimiko. For someone who survived over 149 other people she is too cheerful
>>
>>3341729
Archer's alignment implies a vigilante, a la Wyatt Earp but not above backshooting. Kikuko is WAY to nonchalant and cheery about the War. I do not trust her one bit.
>>
>>3341729
I can’t imagine she can do worse dead ends than Medea or Ilya, so she’s fine for now.
>>
>>3341729
I certainly didn't expect Archer to be a Wild West gunslinger. The fact that he's willing to enjoy the moment when he thinks he's won is almost certain to get him killed, though.

Something's definitely up with Kikuko. She seems pretty chipper despite the whole supernatural FFA deathmatch thing. I'm also curious where Archer saw us previously and she decided to talk to us.

Cynical guess based on our brief encounter: they saw our little scuffle and she's feigning innocence/being an airhead in an attempt to win us over since we're a physical monster. Archer wants to get rid of us because we're dangerous.
>>
>Magic Resistance: A
This is freakishly good for a gun-using hero. What the fuck is this, the Lord's protection? But that would be at EX and be ineffective against sacraments of the church.
In general, modern heroes don't have Kagic Resistance because they didn't encounter Magecraft without being Magi and had less Mystery.
>>
>>3341843
Archer is a very unusual Servant. All I can tell you without massive spoilers is that I thought your point through prior to coming up with the character.
>>
>>3341861
>Archer is a very unusual Servant.
Like, Edison unusual or Arturia unusual or god-as-Demi-Servant unusual?

As Caster begins flapping her wings to go after the escaping pair, you raise your voice to stop her.

"Caster, just let them go. I've had enough fighting for one day."

As she turns back to you, you can see the shock and concern in her eyes. "But, those people broke in, and... oh, god, I'm so sorry! For you to have been hurt like this while I wasn't around!"

Before you can react, Caster has pressed you into a feathery hug; then it hits you, what she's talking about. You still have Saber's blood from the fight earlier splattered all over your uniform, and Caster has no idea what happened during the expedition for electronics.

You awkwardly pat her on the back in a lame attempt at reassurance, and say, "This may be a bad moment, but none of this blood is mine. Let's head inside, and I'll tell you what happened."

She looks you up and down, and goes red as she realizes her mistake."O-oh, that's great! But then, the enemy didn't look hurt either... please do explain."

And so, the two of you return to Caster's room in the university's tower and you narrate the search for electronics, your battle against Saber and his Master, and the appearance of Archer while you were considering matters in the garden.

"...what I'm most concerned about, Caster, is what he said about breaking through your wards. Since I became a Master, I've been able to visualize data about Servants after seeing them in action. One thing I got from Archer was that he has a high degree of magic resistance, but wouldn't that be a defensive ability?"

"You're right," Caster confirms, "magic resistance is usually a defensive ability, but that doesn't mean it's useless when it comes to counteracting magical defenses. My defenses are essentially a reactive attack; the ward places the enemy in my power, and from there the intruders are automatically weakened and destroyed as they attempt to penetrate the warded area, all without me personally having to lift a finger! If Archer has enough magic resistance, though, he could just tolerate the damage from the wards and force his way through."

"You said he mentioned a weak point," Caster continues, "I suppose I owe you an explanation in regards to that. Like I told you when we arrived, the confluence of leylines here isn't perfect; I don't have an unlimited supply of energy to draw on, which means that my defenses become weaker the farther one travels from this room in any direction."

"The issue with that is," she explains, summoning an aerial view of the university grounds, "the area within the university's walls is a rectangle. As you can imagine, that means that the defenses at the more distant ends of the grounds are weaker than those in the central area around this building. You were in one of those areas; you must have walked quite a distance!"
>>
"All things considered," Caster concludes, "we'd better stay away from Archer. Hopefully some other Servant will deal with him, or you can have that girl use her Lancer as our pawn. Even a witch of my caliber wouldn't be much good against an enemy that can weaken magic so heavily. In fact, you probably saved me when you stopped me from chasing after them!"

When you look out the window, you realize the sun has set while you were telling Caster about the day's events. It's probably time to head down to the dining hall and see what Ogawara's cooked up tonight, so-

"Huh? Caster?" You flush, startled, as the woman takes your hand in hers.

"I just remembered," she begins, "there is one tiny little detail that I've been forgetting to mention. The command spells on your hand have a function besides connecting the two of us."

As she explains this, she runs her fingers over the wing-shaped marking, and you can't suppress the shiver that runs through you at the feeling of her soft caress. You hate to admit it, but you've always been too concerned with your studies and student politics to do more than exchange passing words with the female students; even this hand-holding is foreign territory for you.

"Your story about Saber's Master escaping reminded me," Caster continues, heedless of your inner turmoil, "each one of the wings on your hand represents a Command Spell; a single, inviolable command that you can give me. Obviously this is useful for Masters who can't control their Servants, but in our case you can do more interesting things. The enemy Master, for example, told Saber to escape, and Saber became able to move much faster than he had previously while carrying out that command. With the power of a command spell you can even violate time and space; if you were across the city and used a command spell to tell me to come help you, I'd appear right there. You could say that with the power of the command spells, you and I can never truly be apart, Master."

The command spells do sound quite impressive, but honestly you're only hearing Caster with half an ear, while the feeling of Caster's smooth skin on yours is taking up far more of your brain's processing power. Finally, though, you manage to get a grip on yourself and slip your hand out of hers as she finishes her explanation.
>>
"You know," you blurt out, looking for a different subject, "it's getting to be about dinner time. We should go down and eat with the others."

As you're saying so, Caster snaps her fingers and the furniture in the room begins to rearrange itself.

"You're right, Master," Caster says happily, "I was just thinking something similar myself. You see, I have a lovely dinner prepared just for the two of us. Roast lamb and mint kykeon! There's also a salad, with crumbled pecans, dates, ricotta, and balsamic vinnaigrette. There's no reason to force yourself to eat that boy's cooking when you have a legendary chef like me, you know."

While Caster explains the menu she's prepared, the room finishes its rearrangement, and you find you're sitting at an elegant, candle-lit table for two. All traces of the witch's workshop have faded, and the impression of a cozy dining room is complete. Looking down at the food, you have to admit that it is an amazing spread. On the other hand, you're not sure your heard could take much more time with Caster...

Ogawara and the others can have dinner without you. It won't be too hard on the guy. After all, Lancer and Matsuda are practically competing for his food. Caster is only cooking for you, and it would be truly cruel to turn her down. Besides, if the smell is anything to go by she's really outdone herself with this meal.

"Caster," you say, "this looks amazing."

As you begin eating, you discover just how well the food lives up its appearance. The lamb is seasoned to perfection, salt and red pepper combining with the savory natural flavor of the meat to evoke the heat of the Mediterranean sun; the mild taste of mint kykeon is a perfect countermeasure, cooling your mouth when the spice becomes too intense. The salad is just as excellent, combining the sweetness of the dates, the tang of the vinegar, and the rich base of the pecans in irresistible collaboration. The food is paired with a heady red wine, with a low, sweet taste punctuated by astringent notes of pomegranate.

"Well, Master," Caster asks happily, "how is it? You didn't have much to say before, so I really tried to make it perfect this time."

"Perfect" is the only response that comes to mind. "It's delicious, Caster," you continue, "I didn't know someone could become legendary for her cooking prowess until now, but I'm starting to think that's what you did."

"Fufufu~n!" Caster lets out a self-satisfied laugh, "Cooking has always been very closely tied to magic, you know. Modern magi have forgotten that, but when I was alive you had to know how to cook properly before you could even begin studying the higher powers!"

"I'll bear that in mind," you say wryly, "although I wouldn't be surprised if you told me your magecraft were improving the food, as well as the other way around."

After this short exchange, the conversation fades into a comfortable silence; Caster watches happily as you eat, content to savor your enjoyment, and you're too busy devouring her cooking to speak. Once you've finished eating, though, you come to an unfortunate realization.

"It's a shame, but I don't think I'll be able to eat with you like this every night." you declare nervously, not wanting to hurt her pride, "we are in a war, after all. Meals are an important time to come together for any group; especially one under strain, like this alliance with Miss Edelfelt."

Caster's face darkens immediately. "Oh, I see," she says acidly, "you want to make sure you spend time with that girl as well, eh? Don't want to neglect your alliance, do you?"

Then the anger leaves her face, being replaced by simple disappointment as she lets out a despondent chuckle. "I suppose men are the same in any era." Her voice falters, and her gaze falls to your empty plate. "Good night, Master." With that, Caster silently fades from view. Although you can still feel her presence, it's clear she's put an end to the conversation.

Unsure of how to respond, you stand and leave the table, quietly saying "Good night, Caster," as you go. You return to your chosen dorm, sleeping alone for the first time since your arrival in Cid's world. Your eyes fix on the moon as you lie awake, waiting for sleep to take hold. It's a long time before it does.

End of Day 3

The vision that haunts you tonight is of two people, in love. They are a god and goddess, embodiments of sea and sky, and their romance is as far beyond humanity as their natures.

This splendor is short lived, however; with all the pleasures of the world at their feet, the gods were beings of whimsy, their interests and amusements changing by the day. So it is with this romance, as the god's eyes are captured by another, lesser, being. A nymph. For this trifling creature, the god puts aside his lover, and heedlessly begins a new romance.

A goddess is not lightly scorned, however. By stealth and silent hatred, she transforms the temptress into a hideous beast, unreasoning and incapable of love.

But the satisfaction of her victory swiftly fades, as the tribunal of heaven judges her vengeance with cold contempt. The goddess is condemned to an eternally stationary life, deprived of the infinite freedom so beloved of her celestial race.

A new morning dawns, and you awaken to the sound of thunder.

I guess our B-rank luck doesn't help when it comes to women.

Considering our performance so far we'll probably just piss her off too

This would be the first inclement weather you've seen since your arrival in Cid's world, and you throw open your curtains to see the rain. What greets your eyes, however, is another perfect day. The sun shines down from a blue sky, and the towering bastions of cumulonimbus clouds appear only on the distant horizon.

Looking around, you discover the source of the rolling impacts. Off to the Northeast, where the Eighth City's central river flows out to the sea, you can distantly make out repeated explosions. There's definitely a battle going on in that area

This choice will determine your primary strategy for Day 4

Looking out the window, you decide...

>[ ] ...to investigate the fighting in the Northeast. (Duty)

>[ ] ...to continue looking for supplies and try to complete your plan of using drones. (Pride)

>[ ] ...to remain in the university for the day. Perhaps you can do some personal training, or attempt to make up with Truvietianne or Caster? (Compassion)

You were lucky to meet them. If you want to deal with them successfully, it takes more than luck.

Caster is almost certainly scrying on it already.

Unfortunately for us we've managed to get ourselves stuck between a Yandere and a probable Tsundere.

Step 1: Clear up any confusion with the yandere.
Step 2: Ask the yandere to help us and the yankee train.
Step 3: ???.
Step 4: Profit.

I feel like if we head out with this drama going on there'd just be more...worse drama. Let's make sure we're on a good page with caster atleast.

Anon you make it sound easy.
Remember "A goddess is not lightly scorned, however. By stealth and silent hatred, she transforms the temptress into a hideous beast, unreasoning and incapable of love" is what Circe did to Scylla because the God she liked broke up with her for a Nymph.
Also "Her ability to change others into animals is further highlighted by the story of Picus, an Italian king whom she turns into a woodpecker for resisting her advances" from her wikipedia article.

We don't want to upset her.

Can we do both? I feel like it's been a while since we talked to either of them. We can even complain about how "we'll never understand women" and other bro stuff

Honestly at this point if Caster is curious as to what we'll do I think doing anything but see her or wander aimlessly would serve to upset her.
I suppose "yeah I was in a servant battle" also upset her.
I guess the BEST way of decreasing her suspicions would be to bring her with us when we speak to Truvi.

>[ ] Go to Caster's tower
>>
The battle between the enemy Servants can wait. Right now, the most important thing is salvaging your relationship with your own Servant, soured by your unwise speech last night.

After some consideration, you decide not to continue wearing the bloodstained uniform that you appeared in. After a hot shower, you look through the closet of your chosen room to discover it pleasingly full of clean clothing. Unfortunately there are no high school uniforms, this being a university, but there is a wide variety of formal menswear. After scrutinizing the selection and tossing away several items as too showy, poorly fitting, or clashing with your new unnatural hair and eye color, you settle on...

>[ ] The simple look, black slacks and a white silk button-down.

>[ ] Write in your outfit.

Having chosen your clothing, you head up to Caster's room in the university tower, knocking tentatively. "Come in, Master," she responds distractedly. As you open the door, you see Caster bent over a large, shallow silver dish mounted on a pedestal, staring at something within. Still, you've resolved to make your case and resolve this issue.

"Caster," you begin, injecting as much contrition as you can muster into your voice, "I want to apologize for not telling you about the fight with Saber right away, and for what I said after dinner last night. It's not that I want to spend time with Miss Edelfelt, I just-"

Before you can get farther, Caster waves a dismissive hand and cuts you off. "Don't worry about that, Master. I understand how you feel, and that discussion isn't important right now. Now, what is important is this. Come and take a look!"

You tentatively approach to look at the contents of the dish. It's filled with clear water, reflecting something entirely different from your faces. In the water, you can see an aerial view of the Eighth City's central river, where it meets the sea. Sailing up the river is an enormous galleon, at least a hundred feet long and bristling with cannons. All over the surface of the ship, mutilated corpses run to and fro, performing the various necessary tasks of sailing despite being covered in the remains of fatal wounds. As you watch, one dead man carries a cannonball across the deck, his course unaffected by his lack of a head.
>>
There are just two living people you can see on the ship, and the contrast between their attitudes is striking. Toward the stern, a thin, middle-aged Japanese man in a black business suit relaxes on a deck chair. He's wearing sunglasses, reading a novel, and has some kind of drink in one hand. Generally speaking, the man looks ridiculously comfortable. On the other hand, at the bow of the ship stands a colossal man, well over six feet tall, with arms crossed. The man wears an antiquated naval officer's uniform complete with tricorn hat, and has at least eight pistols that you can see, strapped to various parts of his body. The man has a great mane of untamed hair protruding from under his hat, and a bushy beard stretches down his chest. From some unknown source, smoke is coiling around him.

As you're scrutinizing the two people, canons fire silently and Caster seems to suddenly remember something. "Oh, that's right. You can't hear! Here, I'll add sound." She utters an indecipherable syllable, and suddenly the sound of the cannonfire fills your ears. Shockingly, the man at the bow of the ship is shouting loudly enough for his voice to be audible even over the cannons.

"Ajisartous!" he roars, "Stand and deliver! I'm taking everything ye've got, you rotten whoreson! Your creations, your land, and your life in the bargain! If this 'undisturbed' city's your treasure, why don't we start by shatterin' that peace! Fire all guns, boys! Blackbeard's come to pillage, and when I go there won't be a thing o' worth left!"

Status Updated

True to his claims, the ship is indiscriminately firing on the buildings and landscape on either side of the river, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. With all the show he's putting on, it likely won't be long before Blackbeard's ship becomes the center of a congregation of Servants, but how do you react?

Only two servants left to meet. We should tread carefully, since regular Assassin will probably try to take out a master or two with all the ruckus. Hell, if Cid's Assassin is still uppity, he might try to take another crack at us too.

Watching Rider bomb the surrounding buildings, you come to a quick decision. "Caster," you declare, "Let's go intercept them. That excitable moron is going to be bringing all the Servants together in no time, making this the perfect opportunity to strike and thin the numbers."

"Yes," Caster replies, "I suppose it could be. Shall we go, then?"

"Not quite yet. First, I have to go and get Miss Edelfelt and Lancer. With you two working together, we should be able to mount a successful frontal attack on Rider's ship even if none of the other Servants show up!"

Full of excitement, you walk out of the tower without waiting for a response from Caster. After a few minutes of walking, you arrive at Truvietianne's room and knock. "Miss Edelfelt," you exclaim, "Rider has appeared, and there's a massive battle going to happen on the river! Let's go and attack!"

The voice that replies is sullen and pouting. Clearly Truvietianne is not so willing as Caster to move past a slight. "...and why should I go to battle alongside a liar like you? For all I know, you could be lying right now."

You try to open the door and discuss things face-to-face, but it's locked. "Look, Miss Edelfelt," you begin, "as I said before, I'm sorry that I kept silent about your misunderstanding. You have to understand! The world of magecraft, how magi think, it's all new to me! I was just an ordinary person before all this. I thought that if I revealed that to you too early, you'd break off our alliance!"

There's a long pause, during which you can almost make out the faint sounds of hitching breath, before you finally hear another shout from the indignant girl. "Y-you manipulative, lying commoner! You've been playing me for a fool, just using me, right from the beginning! You didn't think of me as an ally, just as a tool! An encyclopedia of the Moonlit World, to fill you in on what you were missing! I'm not going to be fooled again! Just go away! Fight Rider alone, if you're so eager to!"

Yes I lied, and yes I manipulated you, and I am sorry for doing it; but I do think of you as an ally. If I didn't I would have told you the truth and have kept up the charade. And if you can forgive me for that, with time I hope we can be friends. And if you still won't come let me give you a warning; Archer and his master showed up here last night after finding a gap in casters barrier. So stay safe while I'm gone.
