/qst/ - Quests

Alright, sorry for the absence. I'm back now though.
https://pastebin.com/1U8SYf8F All relevant quest stuff, including your monthly schedule.
Without ado, let's continue.
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
You're sat in the Wards headquarters with Armsmaster. Formerly a report on your rather interesting first Patrol, now it's taken a rather scary turn concerning the surgery you performed in an attempt to stabilise your protectorate mentor.

"There were some side effects, in addition to stabilising my condition."

You swallow, your mouth suddenly rather dry. As far as you were aware, this facet of your power let you perform mundane surgeries rather than actual Tinkering. You hope that he doesn't mean anything bad resulted from the surgery.

"In addition to repairing the damage suffered to my body, you also affected the nervous system in my hand somewhat strangely. According to Panacea, during your removal of the shrapnel there, you gave the nervous system a bit of a tune up. Not much, maybe a year or so of ageing taken off. That's not all though."

He swiftly disengages the seal on his right gauntlet, revealing a calloused hand that's entirely too pale. You haven't actually seen his hands normally, so you've nothing to compare it to. It sure isn't normal though.

"I'll probably get Panacea to revert it in a few days, but until then I'd like to study the effects your tinkering has had. Apparently the only negative effects are cosmetic in nature. The... mutation itself means little when we've got someone like Miss Dallon here, but it does tell us something particularly important. You clearly aren't limited to the mechanical side of Tinkering, and we have to determine your exact capabilities in this matter as soon as possible. I've been thinking about having a workroom built for quarantine and biological experimentation for some time, but this has brought it up four stages on my list of priorities."
>>
It wouldn't surprise you if the mentioned list was not only real, but currently up on his suit's HUD.

"You have your press release and the first session of self defence training this week, not to mention that the workstation itself won't be built until later next month. I'd like to run some experiments as soon as possible though concerning this particular facet of your powers as soon as possible though. Director Piggot also agrees that ascertaining the exact limits of your power is top priority. Although I think she might be less optimistic than I am."

He gives you the ghost of what could possibly be a smile, before donning his helmet and standing up.

"Today was eventful, especially for your first patrol. You were mostly satisfactory. I'll leave you to your afternoon."

Well that was a hell of an eventful morning. A quick check around the room reveals that pretty much everyone is out. Dean's supposed to be on base though, in case an emergency comes up. He's not in his room though.

Some money came into your bank account as well. You've got just over a hundred quid.

Dean's cool and all, but you're still lacking enough tech to feel properly comfortable in your combat capabilities. Besides, from what you've seen of Dean and Victoria's relationship there's a good 50% chance of weird relationship drama happening. You want none of that.

We need to request the PRT give us insect and rodents to tinker on for additional and safe studying of our own abilities? I am worried.

spare it. good idea meladdos.
>>
>>3328933
High risk with an equally high risk chance, and since this is a Redux we should try something different instead of doing something old that's already been tried. Yes this is Worm and being a methodical tinker has nothing to do with getting killed by a Brute, though could name how many times that has happened?
>>
>>3328952
I’m not saying to do the same thing, I’m just saying we should do some biotinkery. Armsmaster beaten by Lung, Kid Win by Bitch & Grue, Mannequin beaten by Skitter plus however many weren’t mentioned in canon
>>
>>3328952
Along with the fact that canon specifically states that tinkers are the weakest powersets with the best capacity for fucking shit up
>>
You spend the remainder of the day in the workshop, scribbling away at blueprints and sitting in front of your fabricator as it chugs along, turning excess material from around the Wards HQ into supermetal. You briefly consider making a few more and using them to replace the bins, but collecting the metal and cleaning the waste away would be way too difficult without some way of automating the process.

Maybe you could make another fabricator that makes robots that can... Nah, that'd get you a kill order. Fucking hell that's lame.

"Uhhh, Machine Army Bad."

Sometimes villainy has an allure to it. You never would have guessed after school on a lazy wednesday to be that time though. You switch to a twenty four hour jazz radio station, make yourself some hot chocolate and while away the day. Chilling and making blueprints.

Eventually you drift away to the soft hum of the workshop.

I can believe the part where Lung beats Armsmaster, because this is Lung we're talking about. I can believe Bitch & Grue beating Kid Win because that's a dirty two vs. one. I don't know the details of Mannequin beaten by Skitter but I'm sure that was justified. But the fact stands if we don't take things carefully we'll get all messed up by the shard. Aren't there times where Tinkerers beat brutes?

Four figures chase another two across the roofs of Paris, the city's beautiful lights illuminating the vicious cruelty of their battle. Gunshots and blasts of strange energy lighting up the night as they weave their way ever closer to the crescendo of their final dance. This is it, it's all led up to this moment. Eventually, the larger one has to stop at the edge of the building, having cornered himself in his reckless flight. His companion, a madman in ancient armour pulls harshly on his coat, dragging him away from the edge.

"It's over Jack!"

God, this one's just a boy.

"You'll pay for what you did to Colin."

It was necessary. He was getting too close.
Why can't they understand? You had to look after your family! There could never have been another way. Anyone who threatens your quiet life Cannot be allowed to live!

You watch helplessly as your alter ego turns to Mars, the self described god's steel face as impassive as ever.

"This is it then eh mate?"

"Indeed."

They turn as one to their pursuers, two are from this place. Two young girls, both Gifted. Both part of the ragtag group of orphans, bastards and forgotten that Mr Wallis had gathered around himself. The other two are the same, but ever so slightly different. Most days you'd talk and laugh with them as normal, but then they'd talk about something you cannot comprehend, or laugh at some seemingly innocuous statement and become terribly sad. It is strange, sharing a home with boys from another universe.

Bugs crawl out of Taylor's pack while Sarah's shaking hands heft the pistol you once bought for her at Jack's insistence. Dennis steps forwards, flexing his hands in preparation for what you all know must come next.

Gallant is as sullen and stoic as ever, his helmet long gone, revealing the shadows under his eyes.
He has lost those he loved before, it hurts worse now. Ask him about Victoria.

Jack drops the rifle, hefting Inspector Wallis' last gift to him at your insistence. It was blunt, but they are your family too, and there are some lines no man should cross. The hurt in their eyes doubles, before being replaced by scorn. Jack takes a step forwards.

And the World becomes white, before twisting and turning. No...

Merging.

School continues to pass mostly without incident, the humanities and non-scientific subjects continue to be absolute bitch. You're pretty good at not failing, and most of the subjects are just bullshitting which you've always had a knack for. Eventually though, it comes down to lunch, and the question that you've never really had to worry about before this last week.

Which group of young, ethnically diverse, attractive and popular youths are you going to sit with today? Chris, Dennis and Carlos are actually sitting together today, most likely because Chris remembered to get all his homework done. Dean is sat with Panacea and Victoria, last time's drama seemingly resolved, you remember your curiosity regarding superheroes and power origins, Victoria's supposed to be a real cape nerd, so maybe that'd be a good thing to ask.

Lastly is James, who you see send a nod your way as you enter. He's sat with a few members of the baseball team, but excuses himself and sits elsewhere while bringing out what you recognise as a chemistry book.

Well?
>Crack open a cold one with the boys.
>James, and his 99 problems

That's when you hear the explosion. Truth be told it's less of an explosion, more like tearing metal mixed with human screams of several different pitches and volumes. Like someone snuck up behind a choir and tore their nails down a chalkboard. And then come the voices.

"What the fuck just happened!?"
"VICTORIA, WHERE ARE YOU?"
Shut the hell up Dean, I'd be more worried about us.

I know they said we'd have to wait a month for a fully renovated Biotinkering workshop with all the bells and whistles, but do you think they would allow us to repurpose a room or one that's already empty for bare bones biotinkering? Small animals with cages and animal feed, common medicine and chemicals, surgery tools, a camera to record how we perform, someone with us to supervise us if we wanted them to initially stop us at certain points or not like with Armsmaster, a pair of Hazmat Suits. it can't take no more than a day to get all those.

This translates to Haywire. Professor Haywire? His specialty was "interdimentional tech", and he's the one who breached into Earth Aleph and confirmed that multiple parallel Earths exist - which is confirmed in Ward that is a result of the Entities showing up and doing shit, not sure specifically how, might have to check. Anyway, Professor Haywire's Worm wiki page has a lot of interesting shit on it too.

And Jack fucked up Colin/F&L!Armsmaster because he got too close to discovering his identity? And Barnaby was close friends with all four of them before the massive falling-out? Interesting. Seeing as the last we saw of F&L was during the City Hall infiltration with Armsmaster, and Alternate Gallant and Alternate Glory Girl got portaled in (assuming from Void Knight world) as in >>3329417, then how the fuck did things devolve up to that point?

In the end, you decide to bring Mike over to an Italian place not too far from the Arcadian campus. There's a few people around who seem to recognise you, and you've received more high fives in the past few hours than ever before in your life.

Things have kinda taken a turn for the better freakily fast. Part of you is nervous, waiting for the other shoe to drop, but you throw it to the side and force yourself to relax as you head out. Biting down on your bottom lip helps suppress the giggles, even if it does start to get a bit sore after a while.
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

"And I've been doing way better now I'm not in Winslow, that place was a shithole."

"Language. Me too though. I'm actually pretty popular now. It's kind of weird."

"Are you kidding? It was only a matter of time until everyone figured out how cool you are! I'm pretty sure everyone must have seen that video by now-"

"Video?"

Now that's news, thinking in retrospective it's kind of obvious but you people recording what had happened had kind of slipped your mind. That's... That's...

Awesome!

You spend the rest of the afternoon going through Rune and Alabaster's PHO threads, more than a few of the Kaiser shills seem to be out and doing their thing, but the sheer weight of memery seems to have turned against them. You contribute with a few low effort shitposts, as well as an AMA that gets deleted because (ironically) you "aren't a parahuman".

Some choice memes include the "Virgin Rune vs the Chad Brocktonite" and your personal favourite, a palette swap of a sad frog that makes him look like Alabaster.

It's somewhat embarrassing that you almost out yourself as the new Ward, but at least you notice before actually sending your incensed reply to the mods. That would have been bad. You can almost hear your PR guy sighing as you delete it swiftly.

There's also a thread about the new Ward (you) but it's incredibly low on details and only talks about how weird stuff went down at the art museum and you fought the ABB. So far, the masses have decided that you are clearly a cute girl, based on a fuzzy picture snapped by someone of you riding around on the back of Armsmaster's bike.

Right yeah, obviously. They do science, so it has to be true. Also apparently you're a Striker/Shaker.

Eventually however, you must bid your bro goodbye, making plans to meet up later in the week. You return to Arcadia, and continue your lessons. You sit next to James in chem and explain that you were with your brother. He takes it with the same intense focus he seems to give everything he's told. You get a smile though, so hey at least there's no hard feelings. You also get his phone number, in case you wanted to talk outside of school.

You collapse in the Wards HQ once you return, checking absently through your phone for messages and stuff. There's a few from the doctor, which ruins your mood right quick, but it's the same old same old. "No response, but slowly increasing brain activity." "She's on track for recovery." Slightly depressing stuff, but hey at least she's getting better.

You should really go visit her at some point. It's been like half a month now.

Lastly, you get a message saying that your PR guy (Quentin) wants to see you tomorrow about the big press conference thingy.

Dennis is here in all his redheaded glory, watching old Hammer Horror films on the couch and eating jelly beans out of a martini glass. The man is a disaster, and you should not associate with him.

Vista is actually here as well, doing her homework on the dining table and occasionally stretching out to slap Dennis when he laughs too loud. An impressive feet when you take into account her small stature and the fact that she's almost three metres away. Guess you know why she has such a crazy shaker rating, maybe go say hi.

You hear the sounds of clanking from the Workshop, which either means Chris is there, or something's about to explode.

The evening is yours.

You give the others a nod and wave, Dennis asks if you wanna chill, but you smile sheepishly and nod in the direction of the workshop. He just rolls his eyes and gesticulates with the martini glass as if to dismiss you before taking a gulp of jelly beans and doubling over while choking.

Vista sighs and slaps him on the back from both in front of and three metres away from him.

Chris is Tinkering with his laser gun, a sentence that makes you giggle a bit, and you smoothly slide into place beside him, taking a look over his shoulder as he works. He slots some sort of focusing crystal into a holder before turning and giving you a wide smile.

If we upgrade the mask so it can distort our voice and make it so the mask's teeth can move (and them eat food while still wearing the mask) would that cost Tinker parts? Please say they're freebies.

You decide to give the gear that you already have a bit of work instead of building something new. A mask is all well and good, but a mask that lets you eat and changes your voice is even better.

Trickster's Mask MK1
Your voice is heavily modulated when focused through your mask, nearly every single word comes out in a different pitch or tone, you can also fine tune it, speaking in whatever voice you might wish. In addition, your mask now incorporates a working set of teeth made from your Inconel mix. True to your namesake, you now have a big ol' set of shark chompers. Unfortunately in order to make them work you needed to remove the Disintegration formula. Otherwise they'd dissolve (A)the wiring and (B) anything you tried to eat.
(Melee attacks Crit on 19-20 and Rend if they do.)
(Speak in any voice you want. Mask defaults to sounding like a Warp Spider from Dawn of War. Plus a slight clank and click from the mask's mechanisms.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SUti14oblk

Madman's Boots MK1
Using repulsorlift technology cribbed from Kid Win, you've made hoverboots! YAY!
(Flight)
(Tumble has become Acrobatic Flight +20 to Dodge chances)

What you expected to be a few minutes of Tinkering turns into a few hours as you add more and more details onto what you originally thought were going to be minor alterations. Your mask is fed into the Fabricator and completely reconfigured, coming out as a full face mask with a leering grin and sharp teeth that open and close with your real mouth. A modulation system within also changes your voice to sound fucking WEIRD. Hey, it works though.

The boots are much simpler, Chris guides you through most of the process and "Science" behind it. Eventually you get into the right headspace to make something similar. Essentially they work by materialising oxygen molecules inside of a compression chamber and firing them out through the bottom of the shoe, which are admittedly somewhat hefty looking boots rather than your previous faux-snakeskin numbers.

You throw them to PR for a look over. Quentin sends you a very sad looking emoji (You didn;t even know that the PRT terminal could do those) when you mention the teeth, before you chuck the phone on to charge and sleepily nod to a depressingly energised Chris. It is time for bed.

Friday Is more than a little irritating, it turns out. All your worst subjects are one after another, serving as a kind of "boss rush" of annoyance and frustration. You aren't doing "badly" per se, but it pisses you off when normally you're a straight A kinda guy.

What did the Author mean by this? He meant the door was fucking red, that's what he meant.

And so it eventually comes to lunch, and the age of question of whom you choose to associate with.

Dennis is out, you know that he's on patrols with Assault and Velocity today.

Dean is over with the Dallons as usual. Victoria gives you a wide smile and wave, maybe spending time with someone that chirpy would be good.

Chris is doing his homework over in the corner, heavy bags under both eyes. He must have been on a serious Tinker binge.

Lastly, James is chilling in the lunch line, seemingly stuck over whether to have the pasta or the roast potatoes.

>Dean and the Dallons, again he's on your team. Maybe you should go talk with him.
>Tinkerbuddy tho
>You never got to finish that conversation with Jimbo. A hot dog cart through the door will do that.

Dean and his mind control GF wins.
writing.
>>
It occurs to you that Dean's somewhat of an unknown despite being part of your team. It'd probably be best to hang with him a bit more and get to know him a bit. So you head on over after getting your lunch. Dean's currently sat with not only Glory Girl and Panacea, but also a short haired boy you recognise as Eric Pelham, AKA Shielder. He gives you a look as you sit down and say hi, maybe a bit confused as to why you're here.

Dean is of course, beaten to the punch by Victoria, who introduces you with her signature bubbly enthusiasm. Also of note is that she's got her mindfuck thing turned down, which is always a plus. ogling your teammates girlfriend would probably get real awkward real fast.
"This is Barnaby, he's new."

"Hello."

On the one hand, Victoria just outed you to her cousin, which kind of sucks. But he also seems completely oblivious, so hey no harm no foul. He seems to warm up quite quickly, and before long the four of you are talking shit about supervillains and discussing schoolwork. At one point Shielder pries a bit and you have to evade some questions of what Winslow was like, never pleasant memories there. Overall they're all pretty cool though, and Eric actually gives you his number for if you want to hang out. Score.
Funnily enough you do most of your talking with Eric, Dean and Victoria are too busy doing cutesy couple shit like cuddling and feeding each other. Dorks.

At one point while Gallant and Vicky (As you've now been asked to call her) are making googly eyes at each other, it occurs to you that the other Dallon sister has been awfully quiet this whole time. Taking a look over, You notice that Panacea has much the same expression you saw on Alabaster not too long ago, one of weary resignation. And the absence of hope.

She looks kind of quiet too, maybe you should say something?

>You okay there champ?

Amy Dallon is nothing like her sister, either in looks or personality from what you've gathered. Where Victoria is a never ending font of energy and enthusiasm, Amy just looks tired. Dressing in grey hoodies only exacerbates the effect, giving her the appearance similar to a disappointed mouse.

You decide that this cannot continue henceforth, and decide to engage her in friendly conversation.

"So hey, sorry if this is kinda rude but are you okay? You look kind of tired. heh"

The look of sheer exhaustion she directs your way damn near bowls you over.
"I am..."

Oh no, an awkward situation, clearly the solution is to talk more.

"Yeah I think I get it. It's gotta be tough being a healer in the Bay-"

"Can we not talk about that? Sorry."

Fair enough, shit this isn't going well. And Eric's just left for the bathroom, so no help from that front.

You lean back, thinking about ways to salvage the situation. A few moments later, you open with the one subject almost all parahumans love to speak about. The precise mechanics and discovered functions of their power.

"So there's a thing that I've been thinking about. How do you actually heal people? Like is it something to do with stem cells or is it some kind of chemical that you secrete?"

That seems to stun her for a second, in addition to prompting a strange look when you use the word "secrete". She starts talking slowly, but you can see that she's at least interested in what she's saying even if she's not particularly enthusiastic.

"Well it depends on the injury usually, I can usually just speed up people's natural healing abilities in exchange for a couple days of more calories. Sometimes though I don't have time for that and need to convert things like fat cells or convert extra biomass."

"What about if the body doesn't have enough stuff to properly repair itself?"

"Well..."
///////////////////////////
[-1 TP for Biological Breakthroughs]

When the bell rings, it comes down to Eric to shake you and Amy out of your conversation regarding the precise details of nerve centre damage and the different ways that parahuman powers can be used to repair it. You shake your head, having fallen into a bit of a funk during the conversation while Victoria and Dean look on, ecstatic.

"SHE'S MAKING FRIENDS! i KNEW YOU COULD DO IT SIS!"

There's a brief pang of jealousy as your new buddy is subjected to a bone crushing boob hug from victoria.
It;s the mind control aura, not the hormones. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar and should not be listened to. At least Amy looks happier than before.

The rest of the day passes without incident, and once more you return to what is now almost a home.Vista is on the couch watching the Marvel movies from Earth Aleph, which strikes you as somewhat self indulgent. Aegis is also there, cheering and getting super into it which you didn't quite expect from your somewhat stoic team leader.

The door to Shadow Stalker's room is shut, with heavy metal music playing just loud enough to be audible. You get the feeling that she isn't up for socialising today. Ah well, maybe after working together a bit she'll feel more comfortable.

You consider just going over and saying hi, but you're still kind of running on that mini trance state from earlier, and it gives you a seriously good idea, or rather a seriously food idea. There's no better way to make a good impression than by making quality food. People will forgive a chef for a lot of things.

And with that you set to work, your greatest invention taking place before your eyes.

"Who's that in the kitchen?"

You turn from the kickass scene in front of you, a slightly worried expression replacing what was once ecstatic joy at the antics of the nefarious Doctor DOOM. (In all caps of course.)

"I didn't see, Dennis is out on patrol for like an hour or so though. Probably Sophia"

Vista's expression darkens, before she goes back to noting down power applications and counters. It can be frustrating sometimes, what it takes to get her to relax and chill the hell out. Missy wasn't even going to be here until you suggested it was a good way to "Stimulate a mind for power analysis."

Why do you feel like you've forgotten something? Mission reports from last thursday check. Making sure that Dennis is still banned from PHO check. Official Wards Initiation for the new guy tomorrow che-

The new guy.
Barnaby
Card Shark
There is a BioTinker in the Wards kitchen.

And so you very carefully and quietly stand up, a worried looking Missy watching as you swallow your fear. You remember the hovertoaster incidents, all of them. It is for this reason that Chris is exiled from the kitchen, never to return.

Something is crawling up your back.

You can see a line of small gummy figures, mostly humanoid. They're shambling out of the kitchen in a long line, not dissimilar to soldiers marching in line. Missy's face turns bright red as her gaze drifts to your shoulder. You turn your own head, and very nearly burst out into laughter.

On your shoulder is a very tiny Kaiser, made out of what appears to be gummy... stuff. Gelatin. He's trying to murder you, but he's too small. And it's amazing.

"Oh no."
You turn back to vista as a blade of gelatin sprouts from your passenger and pokes your jugular.
"I'm being hate crimed. Someone call the Protectorate."

It's not too long after that the man responsible for this terrible cruelty reveals himself in all his glory, gummy protectorate on his shoulders.

Gumsmaster lets forth a mighty squeak, and The protectorate descends on the assembled villains, who scatter.
//////////////////////////////
(Some time later after catching and subduing gummy lung, who was the size of a teddy bear by the time Gummy Legend defeated him.)

"-And it's not like they're properly sentient or anything. More like the AI from a shooter. Preset objectives and whatnot."

Missy looks up from her cruel torture of Vanilla, your rendition of Alabaster in miniature scale.

"So he isn't actually feeling this?"

"Nooo?"

First thing in the morning, you get up and do some stretches, getting ready for your first lesson in proper self defence. Your first actual superfight went pretty well, but you're pretty sure that it was despite your skill rather than because of it. A quick walk to the PRT Gym brings you there a good five or so minutes early. Aegis actually comes with, having it scheduled on the same day.

"I gotta say, it's good having this on a weekday morning. Dennis'd bi-uh cry about it, but it's nice getting it all done in the morning and having the rest of the day off."

You're both in costume, due to this area being open for tours and stuff. And as go through the door you damn near walk straight into Dauntless, who was just about to open it.

"Oh hey sport, you ready for your first session?"

Dauntless is one of the more high power Protectorate heroes, and part of this particular base's real heavy hitters. His power is that he slowly builds up charges that he can imbue stuff with, enough charges basically make magic weapons or armour. His costume is like a mix of modern soldier and greek hoplite. So far he's got three artifacts that most people are aware of. His Arclance, a lightning bolt he uses like a spear, his Shield (which he hasn't officially named yet) and the Skytreads, a set of boots that let him fly faster than anyone else in the local protectorate and most of the villains in the area.

He nods the two of you into the gym and through into the back, where there's a large room filled with training dummies and reinforced walls and floors, pulling up one of the Protectorate's legendarily uncomfortable plastic seats. The first half of the session is just being talked through diet and exercise stuff, including being presented with a meal and exercise plan. It's not mandatory because you're only a Ward, but heavily recommended. There's also the particularly basic stuff, like how to make a proper fist. That at least, you manage to get right the first time. You went to Winslow, you know how to punch from experience.

Admittedly the experience was from getting punched, but still.

Unfortunately, before you can get to the proper meat and bones of it you're interrupted by the ever pleasant (sarcasm) sounds of the PA system going off.
"Card Shark to Director Piggot's Office."

Ah, that can't be good.

Aegis looks confused for a bit before facepalming and groaning.
"Christ. Of course she'll freak."

"What."

"She's really-"

"Director Piggot is understandably wary of Biotinkers. And if this is the same as Kid Win's early days, I'm willing to make a bet that you made something you maybe shouldn't have?"

"They were just sweets."

"Then I'm sure it'll be fine."
"Then I'm sure it'll be fine.

How much trouble would be in with Piggot if we made this?
>>

As a side note regarding the archive, if you're going for the reboot (AKA what we're doing now), it's all the way at the bottom under "The Return." The original is "One Bad Day." The events of One Bad Day are summed up during the first thread of The Return (though I'd still recommend reading it, at least up to the phone call to the PRT).

We need to do this. We need to upgrade the kitchen now. We need to make cute animate baked creatures that will never go stale and will reform if they get smushed.

"I had hoped to impress upon you that the creation of sentient life is if not forbidden, at least a serious enough subject that you should ask someone first."

It is not fine, and Director Piggot is not happy concerning you army of small edible capes. Of particular note is the tiny Hookwolf currently throwing himself against the side of the upturned glass currently serving as his jail.

"And even if you were to create such a thing, you are expected to keep a close eye on them. I've been receiving reports from almost every single department where something's gone wrong as a result of your failure to realise that perhaps your actions might have consequences. What on earth do you possibly have to say for yourself?"

"In my Defence, they aren't really sentient, just well programmed."

"They were sentient enough for a tiny Cricket to draw swastikas on the Human Resources team's office wall."

You sink down a bit in your chair. Perhaps creating racist sweets wasn't such a good idea.

"I am hereby banning you from anything that could be even vaguely construed as Tinkering with biological components unless authorised and supervised by Armsmaster. If he doesn't have time to help, then you're going to have to wait. Am I understood?"

She sits back in her chair, a heavy sigh on her lips as she considers the miniature villain replica.

"Given your inability to accurately plan out what you'll actually be building, I'm almost tempted to place similar restrictions on mechanical construction as well, don't give me a reason. You're dismissed."

Maybe we can tell her we can make something that can weed out all the gummie capes that still haven't been accounted for yet. A mini-me gummie. If no then could she at least lower the punishment to something more reasonable? We had good intenions when making these so we could bond with the others and we've learned our mistake.
Armsmaster is a busy man and can't be available all the time as he might want to accomplish his own tinkering when on the Rig, and might not be able to do so if they're stuck watching us. Which would hinder him duties to some capacity. Why not have a list of PRT officers (volunteers) that can supervise / watch over us and "help us" if we ever get into a funk?

Not a very strong counter argument. Piggot greatly dislikes biotinkers, and there is a villain gummies running amuck. Maybe we should have left the Gummie Protecterates to find them?

like we can keep it under our bed, feed it our leftovers/tinker-food and we can cuddle it in the bed like its a pillow and to be honest can you say no to that face?

>>
>>3333117
I kinda like that idea, but damn if the director puts a cork in that idea. What if we do something a little more reasonable so we can earn Piggot's trust and work our way up to more extravagant projects?

>"Hello there Director Piggot, how are you doing? Well I hope? Well today I've come to you for an idea of mine that I wanted to run by you first because I know how much you don't like bio tech and biotinkers: A Biotinkered quasi shapeshifting creature that can make slight changes to it's body to appear more feline, dog like, or lizard (physical details don't matter). It's purpose? To help patients by using it for pet therapy. What I want is to make it so that whatever it eats it's body will break down it all down and converts them into a chemical compound it will store in it's body until stimulated. For example, someone petting it? The compound in mind will be administered to the paciest through malleable hollow tube hairs that will act as it's fur and through it's skin, and will stimulate the patient's body to produce more endorphins and dopamine.

Oh shit actually never mind. We won't have much control of the exact direction of stuff we want to make until we hit Tier 3, so for all I know if we try to make a stress releasing companion it would be a hyena due to the fact that sort of laugh.
>>
"Seriously? You've got to realise that's kind of unreasonable right? Not just for me but Armsmaster too. He's a busy guy, maybe if he wasn't a Tinker I'd get it, but we've got to work for hours to even have the start of something useful. It would make what could be days or weeks of work take months or years, you'll be crippling me."

She's quick to respond, in a tone that were you less worked up might have you give up already.
"The mechanical portion of your power works perfectly, and seems powerful enough on it's own."

"Remember, I've had my powers for less than a month now. I'm only scratching the surface. What if the biological side of what I do turns out to be the main part of it? I don't know and neither do you. Not just that, but Armsmaster is the Head of the Protectorate here. It's not just hero work that he has to do, but paperwork and all that stuff too."

"And what exactly would you suggest? I can't have untested, potentially dangerous biomechanical monstrosities running around my office."
She leans forwards, pointing angrily at the miniature nazi.
"I need solutions to problems, not promises or platitudes. They don't mean a thing. If you can give me something that actually guarantees no more of this then we can start talking."

"Well honestly I'd be fine with a compromise. As long as it doesn't effectively cripple me. Kid Win supervised my work on Armsmaster and while it didn't turn out perfectly the damage was mitigated to an easily fixable cosmetic change. I get that you want me supervised while making the more dangerous stuff, but there's more than one person you could assign that task to is all I'm saying."

The next words from the Director come slowly and very deliberately, not to mention with a certain strained quality that in your experience usually means someone is saying something they don't want to.
"I... understand. Fine. I'll cut the conditions down to any supervisor as long as they're not Clockblocker or Assault... or Shadow Stalker."

"Yeah, I get that feeling she might be a bit scared to speak up sometimes and that'd get in the way."

If you weren't too busy thinking, you might have noticed the momentary flash of confusion on Miss Piggot's face.

"Yes, well I think we've come to a satisfactory agreement. But no more tiny supervillains. That's final."

"Of course Director."

And then you're actually dismissed, finding yourself outside of the office next to a somewhat sheepish looking Aegis.
"You okay man? she can be pretty serious sometimes."

"Yeah, just got to have one someone responsible supervise when I'm doing Bio stuff."

"That it?"

"Yeah"

"Huh. So what are you planning for the evening?"

You think for a second, before shrugging and saying that you've not got much planned. You've got the meeting with Quentin later, but apart from that your day is pretty much free apart from some homework.

"We could chill with Chris for a while, do something cool."

"I know a couple places out on the Boardwalk we could spend our hard earned cash."

You snort at that.
"Yeah, hard earned. I got most of mine for sitting on my ass and tinkering with my fabricator."

"Just say masturbating dude, we all know what you mean."
The two of you march back into the common room together, chuckling as you go and making crude jokes.

"MOOOM, knock next time, I was tinkering with my ray gun."

"High caliber?"

"Nah, more of a pocket pistol."

Chris is there when you arrive, as well as a rather sullen looking Shadow Stalker. Still in costume of course, you've never seen her not wearing it, but also currently yelling at your partner about using all the hot water, a charge that given his wet hair and bathrobe over his clothes seem correct. Naturally you decide to interject.

"Yo Chris, we're headed out to uh, like a movie or arcade or something. You want to come with?"

POV:1 Shadow Stalker
"Hey, you want to come too?"

That was not quite what you were expecting from the creepy psycho, more like hey i'm going to kill you all now by carving out your brains.

Plus it's been a while since you were invited out somewhere by someone who wasn't Emma.
Wait shit no. He's from Winslow too. What if he recognises you? I mean he probably won't say anything, but if he recognises you from school then he'll have some serious blackmail material.
No, you decide. Stay the course.

These simpering prey animals are beneath you, their every action impelled upon them by their betters. Just stay out of trouble until you can leave and then be free. But there's a traitorous little part of you saying hey... "he carved up a nazi, he's pretty cool."

"I know you might get a bit scared around unfamiliar people, I used to as well..."

That motherfucker! That MOTHERFUCKER! He's trying to make you look bad.

He pulls down the mask as well, throwing a wink your way and smiling wide, pearly teeth glinting in the artificial light.
"But I'd really like to get to know you."

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
POV 2: Aegis
Holy Shit
The balls on this guy, this absolute balls.
Obviously Dennis has tried flirtation before, (he does flirt with anything that moves and is vaguely female after all.) but it's never actually worked. She's already got the damn mask off.
What is this magic, that makes a man so attractive to the insane. I mean this is incredible, a real leap forwards in inter team dynamics.
Is it possible to learn this technique?
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
POV 3:Kid Win
You watch as Shadow Stalker huffs, before taking off the outer layer of her costume revealing her civvies on under.
Most of you is too shocked to really parse this, but the rest of you is sighing in relief. Finally, the HotnessTM is turned on to some other poor soul.
It hurts just a little bit. you're pretty sure it's unintentional though.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Not fifteen minutes later, you and the others are walking down the boardwalk and towards the southpaw street Arcade at Carlos' insistence. Sophia (who you're pretty sure was like, a track runner or something at Winslow) is following along as well, having turned down all of the currently showing movies for being "wussy."

Okay Edgelord.

The four of you spill through the front entrance of the building and past the obviously blazed guy at the front desk who doesn't even look at you. God, you should come here with Mike at some point, like you used to before...

Well whatever, guess you're going to have to make do with your group of ethnically diverse young people. The only question left is what to play first.

Tank Commander is a somewhat complicated game in theory. Four players take up positions in a single large cockpit. The titular commander gets an elevated position to himself, and he is responsible for both driving the tank and checking the objectives, which are scattered around the different open maps. He is also the only player with a third person camera, to allow for better dodges

Two gunners take up their positions in a lowered area, One is responsible for the missile Launchers and machine guns, while another operates the main cannon. Lastly an engineer takes up a spot in the last station who is in charge of allocating energy levels between subsystems and performing repairs using wrecks of enemy tanks as well as being completely unable to see what's actually going the fuck on apart from with the radar.

Think kind of like that one star trek VR game.

In practise, it boils down to the Commander bullet helling as fast as he can through swarms of enemies while telling the gunners to shoot everything. And you better believe it becomes a bullet hell at high levels.

"Uh guys... I've never played this before, it looks super complicated."

"It's easy, just don't die and get through the levels. Me and my brother used to go through it solo, or duo rather. We never won, but the one here's only been beaten like ten times since it came out."

"Yeah, we're just blowing shit up, how hard can it be? I'll wreck this."

Kid Win is too busy going through the Engineer's station to even consider answering. Apparently he's already found his calling. You might be slightly jealous.

"I'll jump in the commander's chair then."

"Yeah, probably for the best."

Once everyone's strapped in and you've each stuck a fiver in the slot, the game powers up and the doors swish closed, the almost, but not quite Tinkertech gaming rig powering up and loading the first level.

First though is the most important question. What Tank did you pick?
>RamShackle=The default, weak armour and strong guns, can pick up new weapons and stick them onto the main gun.
>PROJECT:ZERO= A sick hovertank with strong armour, the ability to strafe makes it pretty fucking top tier.
>Devastator:Basically just a Mammoth Tank from Command and Conquer, complete with the ability to drive over other tanks and through most buildings.

I mean that's a fair take. A straight dude/dudette would see the MC as straight, a gay one would see a gay one, and a dude like myself would stick it in any hole available so I naturally see them through that view point.

It also doesn't help that most good relationships are just awesome friendships with mushy feelings and sex added to it.

On the whole relationship thing ,I think a bit Barnaby would be pretty chill, and while I do like Amy and Sophia, I can see the merit in Kid too. I think we'll have to interact with them all more before we can really get a good feel for em.

>It also doesn't help that most good relationships are just awesome friendships with mushy feelings and sex added to it.

Pretty much sums it up, ATM both Kid and Amy can relate to Barns somewhat based on their powersets being similar to ours in classification and abilities. I'm honestly not sure how we are with Sophia, but if you Anons think we can do it then sure. I just don't want a waifu/husbando crammed down Barnaby's throat just for the sake of it is all.

the gummy didnt go off to find a homeless guy to listen to so it was clearly defective, and just because barnaby is a boss does not mean that he could link past all the protections that should exist to stop people from doing any thing with an entity's (or a shard's) trans-dimensional data up/download, outside of direct contact with either side of the link one should not be able to attune to it, and even when some one does something like that it ends badly for all involved.
if we linked with him he would remember, for the orthers maybe we linked to there shards but sion/zion/golden_fool is not in any way a para-human it is the powers(or at least the main user of the platform)

even if we did link with him a suicide attempt is in line with his projected mental state (he was food at the time so he made sure he got eaten because if he was not then he would have failed his purpose(as food)

and i did read the damn thing one post 11 words is easy to miss in a quest, it was even just a response to someone else who maybe had the same thought as i did, that if it was really there it would remember in full all its actions and the data would be added to the pile(giant organic sudo-computer) and it would be flagged as a host accessing something that they are not supposed to be able to get at

The screen in front of you goes black for a second while a small loading bar fills up across the screen. You adjust yourself as the intro cinematic plays, the bright silver tank shuddering as it's dropped from some kind of off brand flying dropship.

The map is built around you, and you find yourself in one of the more popular levels. Burning spires and skyscrapers rise up around you as gunfire and lasers can be heard in the distance. From memory, you know that this particular map has three objectives, and a quick check of the radar confirms that.

"Everyone ready?

You have to shout to be heard over the engine and ambient war noises around you, but three other voices raise in affirmative.

"Yep" (Carlos)
"Yeah!" (Chris)
[Disgruntled Mumbling] (Sophia)

Ah, Sophia'll get into it once the guns start going off. You're pretty sure she was on the track team or something back in Winslow. Gotta be pretty competitive to be good at that sort of stuff.
Kinda too busy evading neo-nazis to know much more though.

The first objective is about half a mile north, through a large park area. You could take a detour that you found with Mike though, it'd take you more time, but there'd be less armour to deal with. The detour itself goes through the interior of a mall, only possible because of your tank's small size.

It might be kind of boring for the others though, mostly just squashing ants.

Fuck it, let's get this rolling.

Literally, because you're in a tank.

>Sneeki writing
>>
Making a snap decision, you send the tank into reverse before turning and hurtling down a side road. The whole machine tilts and rumbles while you do so, mirroring the motions that the virtual vehicle is managing.

This is your third or so go in the driver's seat, and the motions come back to you fairly easily. A minute or so in and you're already driving around like a pro. The others (Sophia especially) seem less than enthused by the lack of bad guys to shoot, but it's only a few minutes until you're busting down the glass doors to a simulated mall, one of the few buildings with a modelled interior.

As you go in, indicators light up across your screen as scattered digital soldiers pick up your tank and pepper the armour with laser rifles. Sophia and Carlos fire back and vaporise most of them, the rest scatter into cover.

You've got to be careful not to let them get too close, or they'll start throwing grenades which can actually damage you. Usually you and Mike just blaze your way through, but it'd be tricky for your gunners to shoot while jinking all over the place.

Speaking of your gunners.
Carlos is on the machine guns, and so far he seems to be having a hell of a time. He's got a great big cheesy grin, and only stops firing to reload.

Sophia seems to be having some fun too, sending infantry flying with a tank cannon seems to suit her. She's got a thin smirk on, which only grows more harsh when she puts the sights over some poor virtual bastard.

Maybe you were a bit hasty earlier. This seems to be a good warmup for the newer players.
Chris is mostly just keeping an eye on the tank's armour and weapon systems, allocating power away from the engine and into weaponry while you wait to make another decision.

>Maybe let it rock for a bit, they're having a blast with these guys.
>If they think this is rad, just wait for the final boss. Stick the engines on full.
>You should get going yeah, but that doesn't mean you have to do it that fast. A slower, more measured advance might be the best choice.

You sit back for a second while your teammates enjoy themselves, giving Chris a nod as you wait for them to depopulate the mall of baddies a bit more. He huffs a bit, before rolling his eyes at the other two who're busy blowing everything within a thirty metre radius into virtual confetti.

You lean back to stretch, and that's when it hits you.
Literally

An anti tank round fired from a mook impacts the tank's left side, throwing off your gunners' aim and giving you a nasty shock, like when someone pops a balloon too close to your ears. You do learn something incredibly important though.

The noise Carlos makes when he gets surprised is fucking amazing.

"What the shit!"
[Surprisingly deep Squeak]
"Ah!"

It seems that your gunners missed a guy with a bazooka. A minor mistake and easily rectified, but it does cost you a bit. (-1 HP)

HP:(3/4)

You decide that it might be best to skip out here and get onto the objectives. The tank tilts onto it's side as you turn it around and finish your shortcut. You find yourself pulling up to a large government building that's totally not the Pentagon. Your mission? To clear out the streets around it so that the "civilians" inside can escape.

There are a few tanks and lots of infantry about, with more than a few bazooka troopers in buildings, what's your plan?

The first enemy tank goes up before it can even try and fire back, Sophia lets out a dry chuckle as shrapnel goes all over the small intersection you're fighting on. The other enemies return fire fruitlessly as your vehicle reverses out of the way and around the corner.

Carlos has a few suggestions as well, regarding how to go about his one.

The next few minutes go particularly well. The enemies are baited around corners and destroyed one after the other, their simple AI unable to keep up with you and Carlos' tactical expertise. You know the terrain, and the rest of the team has taken part in enough actual fights that this is way too easy.

It takes a good ten minutes, but you clear what would normally be a really tough fight without a single scratch. You survey the devastation with a satisfied grin once it's done. Your team seems rather satisfied as well, Sophia even giving Carlos a [reluctant] high five.

"Get trashed Evildoers!"

"Evildoers? Really?"

Carlos shrugs.
"They're clearly an invading army, and we're the good guys. Therefore they must be doing evil, QED."

Carlos straightens an imaginary set of glasses while you shake your head and put the tank into gear, trundling on the way to your next objective.

This one is both closer and somewhat more difficult to cheese. The enemies here are in a set defensive location covered in cover positions and guns. The objective itself is a command tank somewhere near the back that needs to be blown up.]

The problem is the rather large force of tanks and missile batteries in between you and the others. There's maybe a dozen tanks and six stationary missile batteries set up along a long road which slopes upwards towards a ridge.

"Buddy" Carlos says with a slight tremble. "This sounds like a terrible idea."

Setting the engine to max speed, you rocket up the hill with a tremendous roar. Almost immediately, shells and rockets fill the screen. You dodge them long enough for your gunners to start popping off shots, but few hit given how you're swaying and jinking the tank.

"Goddamn it, stay still!" Sophia's teeth are clenched as the machine sways back and forth, throwing off her shots.

"If I stay still we're dead, I have to keep moving." You reply, teeth clenched as you weave in between rockets and other such unfortunate hazards.

Then disaster strikes with the force of a thousand dick kicks.
"Huh, I could really do with a vehicle to get around on." You barely even notice as you mumble out the words, but almost the instant they're out you can feel your mind clouding as your hands twitch.

You force the trance back, but it's too late. A missile slams into the frontal armour of your virtual vehicle like the fist of an angry god

HP:2/4

You wrest Control back and manage to stop from losing any more health, but you're forced to keep running once you hit the top of the hill. Sophia nails the command tank with a bullseye and you're on your way.

The last Objective.
Investigate Unknown Energy Signature.

Now there are a few different bosses it can be, and as you drive closer you think over the different types you've seen before.

>The Experiment: A spider mech that climbs and jumps from building to building, jumping from one skyscraper to another while turrets on the back pound anything it can see.

>The Rolling Fortress: A tank with eleven different gun barrels on. Tends to shoot through terrain.

>The Titan: A small humanoid enemy that rushes your tank and tries to punch you, throwing you all over the place if it hits. Hard to hit and very fast.

The computerised sky darkens as you reach the navigation point. Thunder and lightning crackle in the skies as you trundle down a long road, the end of which has a thin pinprick of purple light flickering at it's end. It's surrounded by machinery and tiny people. It grows larger as you approach, long meaty tendrils exiting what is now clearly a portal.

You can see tiny people dressed up as scientists trying to flee from the machinery, but they're snatched up as the tendrils extend and rip them to pieces.

The rest of the creature follows shortly after, red flesh spilling from the hole in reality as it tears through the last of the minions there to greet it, before turning it's gaze to you.

The music, formerly quiet but upbeat, now takes on a hideous tone, orchestral notes brimming with malice You and your team share nervous looks before the beast charges forwards, pulling itself forwards on bone spurs and tentacles.

You slam the gearbox into reverse as the boss charges forwards, narrowly avoiding several sweeping tentacles as Sophia plants an explosive shell right in it's eye.

It responds with a keening screech that's backed with an artificial ringing effect. It's tentacles thrash for a moment before it screeches again and speeds off down another street, batting cars out of the way with it's hideous bulk. The four of you chase after it, firing all guns and tearing into it's hit points.

It ducks around a corner and you follow, charging forwards in an attempt to keep the pressure on it. It's clearly a bit smarter than the other AI though, as it's waiting around the corner for you. The monster lashes out with a long barbed hook made of bone, but Carlos raises the machine guns and blows it in half before raking the monster's flesh with fire.

Carlos' own reaction is as exuberant as he usually is outside of costume. "Yeah, get some!"
"Fuck you!" Sophia's is less so, and much more uh... Acerbic.

Taking a second to look around at your teammates, this particular activity seems to be a definite winner, even with your more stoic teammates. You'll have to remember this if you ever bring anyone else out.

Speaking of taking things out.
>The beast is wounded, press the attack.
>Same strategy as last time, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
>Try and strafe around it, keep it locked down while you attack.

Due to popular demand, you'll be shooting at the big monster.

might have to put this down and pick it back up tomorrow. Not 100% on it though. I'll write up as much as I can.

You know. A modified version of this tank game would be a great exercise for unpowered PRT personnel in the event they need to combat powered, if not monstrous individuals with armored vehicles. I know some of the PRT vehicles they have at their own disposal have top mounted turrets with containment foam launchers or hoses. Planetside 2, Battlefield games. Stuff like those.

What if we try baiting the monster into the other AI's? Could they kill each other?
