/qst/ - Quests

In the far future, biotechnology advances by leaps and bounds, creating stunning achievements in medical, civil, and military applications. Illness becomes a thing of the past, and genetic modification is as commonplace as cosmetic surgery.

However, like all great advances, unchecked progress and experimentation has led to abuse and corruption. Ultra powerful megacorporations that monopolized the latest biotech have risen to be the great powers of the age, waging secret wars of sabotage, espionage, and deceit to get ahead of each other.

In order to fuel their rampant growth, megacorps develop lethal diseases and viruses, horrific bio-organic abominations, and ever more exotic genetic modifications to both sell to the highest bidder and unleash upon each other.

The rampant proliferation of bioweapons, and the need to contain them, has given rise to a new profession, the BIOWEAPON HUNTER.

You are LEWIS, a Hunter specializing in hunting down biological threats with your T-Doll companion HK!

Currently, you were chasing what seemed to be another illegally bioengineered dinosaur in the depths of the jungles of Rockfort Island. The thing had just torn through an entire Umbrella convoy while suffering no serious damage, but for some reason decided to flee.

"We are slowly catching up." HK notes. "We can try and engage the target in the jungle or wait for it to corner itself against the perimeter fencing."

Well, attacking a big creature like that in the jungle where it will have plenty of cover and methods to evade you was not exactly ideal, but you weren't too sure if it could breach the perimeter fence around the restricted zone or not. If something like that got loose on the island proper...

>Engage the dino in the jungle.

"We'll hit it in the jungle!" You yell to HK. "Give it everything you got!"

"Affirmative." HK nods resolutely as she raises her rifle. The barrel of her back mounted Typhoon launcher also swivels into position, ready to fire.

Meanwhile, you unsling your rocket launcher and hoist it over your shoulder. With your enhanced strength, you could still hold it fairly steady while keeping up a healthy sprint. However, the larger problem was actually hitting your target. That dino was damn fast, and the rocket launcher you were lugging was the simple tube kind with a basic sight and no fancy guidance system. You'd pretty much have to eyeball this.

All those trees in the way weren't helping too much, either.

You fire off your first rocket, which shrieks through the trees right at the fleeing dino, but it seems to be aware of the incoming threat and sidesteps just in the nick of the time, but your rocket slams into the tree behind it instead, showering the dino with flaming wood splinters and briefly slowing it down.

HK then follows up, launching a flurry of Typhoons grenades. Explosions ripple across the dinosaur's scaly skin, rocking the creature, but it stays on its feet.

And it continues to make a run for it.

"Wait a minute!" You pause. "HK, cease fire!"

"Affirmative." HK lowers her rifle, but looks at you curiously. "Why?"

"Just a hunch..." You frown as you take a deep breath. "Carol, is that you?"

The dinosaur slinks off into the darkness, and there's a brief silence before it's broken by a loud, girly scream.

"LEWIE YOU MEAAAANIE!"

Carol suddenly blasts out from the trees, kicking you right in the gut with the force of a cannonball. Your crystal skin thankfully saves you from any significant damage as it hardens in response to the attack, but there's still enough force to knock the air out of you.

"Carol! I didn't know! Honest!" You wheeze.

"Why are you here?" HK asks suspiciously, though her weapon is still stowed away.

"You were helping Mom, weren't you?" You narrow your eyes. It all made sense now, how she singled out Wesker's vehicle and then destroyed the rest of the convoy vehicles specifically.

"Well yeah, she asked me to!" Carol pouts, not even bothering to help you back up. "And then you and HK show up and start shooting me!"

"You're quite clearly not hurt." HK points out.

"No!" Carol admits. "But it still hurts, you know!"

Damnit, why'd Carol have to get involved in all of this...?

"I'm really sorry, Carol." You say apologetically. "But maybe next time, well, you could be something a bit less overtly threatening?"

"Nnnnnn, I can't stay mad at you!" Carol giggles as she lunges forward and hugs you. "You were just doing your job, I guess!"

"Can you regenerate?" You wonder.

"Oh, don't worry, I totally stuffed myself at the buffet in preparation for this!" Carol puffs up proudly. "Plus, there's plenty of biomass on this island I can use if needed!"

You wonder if Carol actually ate any of the "normal" dinosaurs on the island... You decide it's better not to ask.

"You mentioned that Alice was here as well?" HK asks, trying to keep things on track.

"Ohmygosh, you're right!" Carol gasps. "She said to get that mean guy with the sunglasses away from the others, so that's what I did! I think she's gonna go after him!"

So Mom was serious about going after Wesker. Wait, shit. You remember that Hunk was headed over to assist!

"Damn, we better get there, then." You scowl.

"I'll come with you!" Carol offers.

"All right, but you better not draw any attention!" You grunt.

"Who do you think you're talking to?" Carol giggles as she starts to shrink, morphing into a tiny mouse that takes refuge in your jacket. "Let's go!"

"That's a rather convenient ability." HK observes.

"Heehee! Jealous?" Carol squeaks, comfortably nestled in the collar of your jacket.

"Just making an observation." HK replies calmly.

"Less talking more moving." You grunt as you pick up your pace.

There's a few minutes of running as you and HK hustle over to where Carol had tossed Wesker's jeep. As you get closer, you can clearly see the crumpled remains of the vehicle, laying on its side and belching smoke.

"My my, I didn't know you were so concerned about my welfare." Wesker says in that typical smug tone. You turn to see him calmly walking towards you, not a single scratch on him save for a few noticeable cracks in his signature sunglasses. "However, as you can see, you are quite late."

"What happened?" You ask as Carol squirms in your jacket.

"I was ambushed by an anonymous mercenary." Wesker explains. "Quite the skilled one, she was. Nothing like the rabble Hunk warned me about. She even managed to escape."

"My apologies, sir." Hunk wheezes as he limps into view. He looked like a proper mess, his gas mask cracked and uniform disheveled. Looked like someone did a real number on him.

"No apologies needed. If not for your assistance, I dread what may have happened to me." Wesker smiles and turns back to you. "I hope the good Doctor is safe?"

"She is." You nod. "She's with the rest of the convoy."

"No matter, we'll eventually track it down." Wesker shrugs. "Still, despite these losses, we've made quite the gains, haven't we? I'm sure Doctor Vahlen is quite satisfied."

"As far as I could tell." Hunk coughs.

"Yeah, let's." You nod. Trying to separate from Wesker now would risk rousing suspicion from him.

"I don't like him at all." Carol whispers to you. "He smells... wrong."

Well, you're sure a man with Wesker's means would have access to all sorts of top of the line biomods. Who knows what he was hiding in that body of his? Especially if it looked like he hadn't taken a scratch from Mom, and Mom was pretty terrifying herself.

By the time you all return to the site of the convoy, you could see that the Umbrella forces were starting to clear trees with explosives, no doubt to make an area for a helicopter to land. Sure enough, you can see a helicopter already touching down.

"That's our ride." Wesker says with a smile. "Well, more accurately, the Doctor's ride. But I think we can all return to HQ for a proper debriefing, yes?"

You can still feel Carol squirming in your jacket.

"Carol." You whisper. "Go find Mom. It's too dangerous for you to stick with us."

"But-"

"Go, Carol." You hiss.

There's a little squeak and you can feel Carol scuttle down your jacket and drop to the ground, disappearing into the brush.

"Come on, Lewis, we're all waiting for you." Wesker says. Sure enough, Vahlen was already in the helicopter with Wesker at the door. Hunk, however, was limping back towards the bunker, no doubt to go find SOPMOD.

With not much other choice, you and HK board the helicopter with Wesker and Vahlen.

"So, Doctor Vahlen." Wesker starts immediately. "I take it that you found something interesting."

"Yes, I've found a bit of the data that was scrubbed from the main InGen server." Vahlen nods. "It appears the company was secretly experimenting with human-dinosaur hybrids."

"Looking to break into the BOW market. Old Man Spencer was right." Spencer smirks. "And I take it our hired help was useful?"

"They provided adequate protection, yes." Vahlen nods. "Though it's a shame you weren't able to bring a sample of that T-Rex like creature. It was quite clearly genetically modified beyond the standard strains you could find in the park."

"Well, we lost it in the trees. This is an easy place to hide." You shrug.

"Undoubtedly." Vahlen nods in agreement.

"In light of the work you've done for us so far, I think you're due for some good old fashioned Umbrella hospitality." Wesker smiles, which causes you shiver. "How about a short stay at our newly acquired resort facilities on the island? Free of charge, of course."

You look at HK, you simply stares at you blankly.

"You can say that I am working on a project to surpass Umbrella's Tyrant line of BOWs." Vahlen says with a hint of pride. "Something more intelligent, more adaptable. The perfect organism!"

"You sound like more and more like Dr. Birkin every day." Wesker grins wryly.

"Hmph The man has had nearly a decade to perfect the G-virus and has failed to show any concrete results." Vahlen huffs. "Honestly, I'm not sure why he still holds such a high position in the company."

"You wouldn't be the only one to think that." Wesker says ominously. "But business matters aside, we've reached our stop."

You blink when you notice that the helicopter has already landed on the roof of the resort tower. Wesker kindly slides the door open.

"Until next time." Wesker gives another creepy smile. The type of unsettling smile that communicated that he knew something you didn't.

Damn, you started to understand more and more why Lucina detested him. She had to work under him every day.

"Don't forget your key." Wesker tosses you a keycard, which you manage to catch. On it was the designated room number. "It's the top floor suite, so it's just one floor down."

"Thanks, I guess." You nod.

Wesker just gives a smug grin as he slides the helicopter door closed and it takes off, leaving you and HK on the roof.

"I've conclude that all of the Umbrella personnel we have met so far are somewhat... unusual." HK notes.

"That's a big understatement." You sigh. "All right, let's go see what the room's like."

Both you and HK head down one floor from the stairwell and see a mighty set of double doors. You wave the keycard in front of the reader and the doors swing open, revealing a rather luxurious hotel suite that reminded you of Lucina's penthouse.

"We should just sit tight until Carol catches up with us." You shrug as you seat yourself ion another couch, and you can immediately feel your energy being sucked away.

HK meanwhile continues to stand, though you get the feeling that she's troubled by something.

"Something wrong, HK?" You wonder.

"Lewis..." HK pauses. "Am I... an adequate T-Doll?"

"What?" You blink, not understanding.

"Has my performance been acceptable to you?" HK asks, her cold artificial eyes staring straight at you.

"Yeah, well, it still feels a bit odd to ask you this." You sigh. "But... have you been talking me, HK? Tell me the truth."

"I'm merely following my primary directives to protect you." HK says simply. "As I was programmed to."

"Even if it means following me without my knowledge?" You raise an eyebrow.

"I simply judged through my own logical deductions that it was not necessary to inform you of my presence. Neither you nor any other parties were harmed by the omission of information." HK remarks coolly.

Huh, well it all seemed to make sense, but you did get the feeling that these were canned answers from HK. Was she really telling you the truth?

"HK." You say sternly. "You're not telling me everything, are you? More 'omission of information?'"

HK pauses and her eyes twitch for a brief second, as if she had run into some sort of error. Conflicting directives? Some sort of bug? You weren't too sure. With a normal human you could just assume they were being... human. But a constructed being like HK...?

"I-It's not necessary for you to know." HK blurts. "Such information is not critical to the mission at hand."

Okay, something was definitely off with her. This just confirmed it.

"HK, don't tell me... you're scared to answer?" You ask in bewilderment.

"Impossible. T-Dolls are incapable of experiencing emotions, much less what is defined as fear." HK insists.

"Then why won't you answer me?" You ask. "Don't make me force you to."

"It's just...." HK looks away. Was she feeling guilt? "I want to be useful to you, Lewis. I want to be a T-Doll you can depend on, no matter what."

"But you're already plenty useful, HK." You assure her. "We've already gone through so much together. Hell, I'd probably be dead if it weren't for you in Antarctica."

"Still... it's not enough." HK's hands ball into fists. "There's other T-Dolls out there you seem to work so well with. There's... my failures just today. I couldn't handle those hybrids by myself and I made you worry."

You can almost swear you can see HK trembling.

"What have ST-AR and SOPMOD been telling you?" You narrow your eyes. You knew that HK had interacted with them alone, and never really talked about what happened between them. In fact, she'd always avoided those subjects.

"SOPMOD was rather simple." HK mumbles. "She warned me that T-Dolls like us are just tools. Once we're no longer useful, we're discarded."

"And ST-AR?" You raise an eyebrow.

"That... I'm a slave to my programming. Doomed to die from a single line of code. " HK bites her lip. "One day, I'll destroy myself for you, regardless of whether I want to or not."

That was... pretty heavy shit, actually. It really made you wonder what those older T-Doll went through to give HK such macabre "advice".

"I'm... I'm supposed to be the best." HK looks down at her hands. "But what if it's not enough? It clearly isn't enough..."

"You're not a tool, HK, you're my partner." You say, putting a hand on her silver haired head. "You're your own T-Doll. Don't let ST-AR and SOPMOD push you around."

"But-"

"If you're worried you can't cut it, we can always improve." You assure her. "As partners, we help each other. It doesn't just all go one way. You back me up when I'm in trouble and I'll do the same for you."

"Lewis..." HK blinks the rest of her body seemingly frozen.

However, she then leans forward and hugs you, burying her face in your chest. It was... surprisingly soft and warm, almost like a real person.

"Hearing you say that, it makes me... happy? At least at ease."

"Aw, that's cute." Mom says smugly, her head perched on the top of the couch, a catlike smile on her face.

"Please don't tell me you were awake for all of that." You groan.

"They certainly don't make T-Dolls like they used to." Mom chuckles. "Now they can make them just as neurotic and insecure as us! What an achievement."

"Mom." You sigh.

"Sorry, sorry, just watching you and HK being all gushy like that almost made me throw chunks!" Mom laughs. "What would Lucina think if she found out about all of this?"

"How are you even here, Mom?" You ask, trying to change the subject.

"Indeed, you have covered a large amount of area in an improbably short period of time." HK points out.

"Let's just say it was magic." Mom waves off the question. "But it left me fucking pooped, which was why I decided to hole up here with you."

"What, means you had to-"

"Magic." Mom says bluntly again. "Or, well, a conveniently placed listening device, but it's all the same."

"You really are something, Mom." You sigh in exasperation.

"So, Mom." You grunt as you lean against the couch. "Just what the hell happened between you and Wesker?"

"Well, it was SUPPOSED to be a simple grab job." Mom sighs. "Carol would separate him from the pack, and I'd swoop in and snatch him before anybody could figure out what was going on."

"It obviously didn't work." You point out.

"Yeah, well, I was expecting him to be modded up, but not the extent he actually is." Mom groans as she takes a pull from a bottle of wine she had somehow acquired from somewhere. "He's definitely got some kind of black market or military grade shit in him. Nothing should be able to move that damn fast."

"So you couldn't handle him?" You raise an eyebrow.

"I never said that." Mom snaps. "But he held me up long enough for backup to arrive. One on one, I could have edged him out, but I wasn't about to take my chances when he had numbers on his side."

Ah, she must be talking about when Hunk went to assist.

"You know, things could have gone differently if you just told me what you were doing." You point out.

"Didn't want to trouble you. It seemed like you were busy enough." Mom sighs. Besides, don't you have appearances to keep up? Better that you don't give 'em any reason to be suspicious of you."

The last thing you see is tentacles... lots of tentacles before everything goes dark..

You're not quite sure what happens next, but when you wake up, you find yourself laying on the couch, with the unshakeable feeling that your body didn't quite feel right, like it was dipped in a vat of vaseline or something, leaving a slightly slimy and greasy sensation on your skin.

"Ah, you're awake, Lewis." HK says with a slight smile.

"What... happened?" You groan.

"Carol got a little carried away again." Mom grunts, now wearing a t-shirt and shorts. Her damp hair indicated she had just gotten out of the bath.

"Oh..." You sigh.

"I'm soooooo sorry!" Carol whimpers from her spot in the corner, no doubt put on time out by Mom.

"Did I say you could talk, Carol?" Mom growls.

"Eeeep!" Carol squeaks.

"Anyways, since this whole grab mission turned out to be a huge waste of time, I suppose I should get going." Mom sighs as she takes a pull from a whiskey bottle. You don't even want to know where she keep getting all this damn alcohol. "No sense sticking around and getting in the way of your little vacation here."

We can totally hit the beach, though we might garner some unwanted attention due to Carol and Alice's good looks.

I'm sure they can handle themselves. Carol could just change her appearance, and Alice can mention she's married or give them the usual glare.

"Well, I don't really mind if you stay, Mom." You say rather bashfully.

"R-really?" Mom pauses, caught of guard. "I'd just be a total killjoy."

"Well, we never did get to have a proper vacation together since Dad died." You mumble. "I just thought we could have another chance at it."

"I agree!" Carol interjects.

"Carol I-" Mom turns to chastise your sister but stops and shakes her head. "Goddamnit, guess I got no choice, huh?"

"And now we have HK with us, too!" Carol says happily.

"I don't see how my presence would affect-"

"Don't be silly!" Carol's immediately behind HK, her arms snaking all over the T-Doll's chest and torso. "Ooooooh, whoever designed you got the proportions almost perfect! You'd look awesome in a swimsuit!"

"I fail to see the practicality of swimwear." HK protests.

"Oh boy, Carol and clothes." Mom sighs.

"You don't mind if I borrow her, do you, Lewie?" Carol asks sweetly.

HK just gives you a look as if she had actually learned what true fear looks like.

Mom just casually takes another pull of whiskey.

>You should leave HK alone.

"All right, but just be gentle with her." You grin. "She's a sensitive girl."

"Okaaaaaay!" Carol chirps as she grabs HK and practically drags her to the door. "Come on! I'll take you to my hotel room where I have my wardrobe stashed at!"

"I do not desire this outcome." HK whimpers.

"Consider it an order." You grin.

"Don't worry! It'll be fun!" Carol says in a singsong voice and gives one more tug, finally pulling HK out the door and out of sight as it slams shut.

"Kinda nice Carol has someone she can let loose around." Mom smiles.

"Why don't you just Lucina and Nemo?" You wonder. "Auntie Egan and Uncle Leo know too right?"

"It's not that simple." Mom frowns. "You know what Carol's capable of, and you know what those megacorps you work for are capable of. The more people we let in on this secret, the bigger the risk it gets out."

True, but at some point, Lucina is going to need to know that Lewis, and by extension, the family is far from normal.

God knows how she's going to react to that bombshell.

If we are having talks about risks to secrecy.

While it is about legitimate security concerns, it certainly makes Carol feel kind of isolated from anyone not in the know due to having to put on a mask.

"I guess you have a point." You admit. "But I gotta warn you, Lucina's going to find out eventually. I'm sure of it."

"Well, we'll worry about that when we get to it." Mom concludes. "But for now, I am completely fucking beat, and I know for a fact Carol's gonna drag us all over the damn place tomorrow so I'm gonna grab as much shut eye as I can. I recommend you do the same."

"Right. I will." You nod as you watch Mom slink off to one of the suite bedrooms. At least she'd actually be in a real bed this time.

You start to think about getting some sleep yourself when you remember that you still have all of Carol's tentacle slime still sticking to you.

Maybe a quick shower first...

See you Friday, Merc.

I swear that with all the animals and people Carol has eaten over the years, she's going to be a goddamn genetic seed bank if an apocalypse happens.
>>
Do you think Vahlen could keep secret in exchange for Carols exclusive cooperation with SCIENCE if we got ourselves into position where we have to “capture” transformed Carol to avoid revealing her identity to others?
>>
>>3337137
I'm sure we can trust her to be engrossed with SCIENCE to create whatever she's planning.

I'd be more concerned about the people funding Vahlen's project as well as the outcome of it.

Last thing we need is a cute Invader Hybrid Momma's Boy being on par with Carol's combat skill. Or both of them seeing each other and performing a 'courtship' dance that looks more like a fight between demi-gods.
>>
>>3337447
>Invader Hybrid Momma's Boy

>Vahlen's pet project is super clingy to her since he has her DNA, and recognizes her as his mother

All Alice can do is give the new beleaguered parent a huge list of things of do's and don'ts formed from years of living with Carol.
