Well then! That went rather well all in all softsouls. Out of the pit and into the open wide world air and all the sights to see!

It's a rather rare thing for even Scarf to feel the rattling thunder of terror in these old weatherworn bones.

( One rather hopes it does not become too frequent an occurrence )

hank you. It isn't every day one acquires a pet portfolio of half-lost Pytherian soldiers. Rattle your little memory stocks. What were you doing in the Pit of all places? The poor Addled took Scarf for a spot of spelunking, and none too kind at the grabbing either!

Now we find ourselves in some firewashed spatial uncertainty. Admittedly we are rather lost. Perhaps our quiet friend with the mask can guide us to their local village for a chance of resupply and the warm embrace of civilisation. After all this rope swinging a well-stuffed straw mattress and wicker-chair is high on Scarfs list of desires.

But . . . One would be a poor host at this shadow-sheltered copse if one did not offer a spot of delicacy to guests and wanderers. Share a secret!

What will you do now, little lost sacrifice souls?

And if it takes your keen interest, perhaps Scarf might make a barter or two for the wretchedness the tumultuous hammers of the world has etched into your bones?

Recover all Fatigue.
Recover Resist in as many other conditions as you want.

Any Condition can be offloaded to Scarf, who will happily trade it off of you. It may be wise to attempt to barter them for something.

--

You can trade and transfer Secrets amongst yourselves freely. Perhaps someone knows something you would like to know? Of course, doing so means you no longer know - otherwise it wouldn't be a secret, softsoul.

It might be wise to re-distribute gear and align yourselves in purpose.

Feel free to inquire, test, consider, converse and perform other activities. If doing so, simply state what you intend to do. Camp Phase does not spend Alacrity.

A question if I may, how do secrets work? And what is that which lay at the bottom of our hearts kept away hidden from all the others? (Secret soul)
Do we simply remember a old forgotten memory? Or do we experience it as one man once did?
>>
>>3332051
You spend Alacrity on Secrets, getting as many dice as your rank times the alacrity.

Longblades 1 is 1 alacrity for 1d100
Longblades 2 is 1 alacrity for 2d100
Longblades 8 is 1 alacrity for 8d100

Secrets are in essence knowing how to do something.

Depending on the Intent behind what you are trying to do, the base effect is changed.

Longblades to attack is governed by Harm
Longblades to defend by Resist
Longblade repair by Solve

So Longblades 3 with Harm 2 gives you 3 dice for every alacrity spent to strike and when you do strike, your base damage is influenced by Harm.

Secret Soul is all yours and all the strange ways to grow and change. It gives a boost to acquiring expertise and remembering previous deeds.

Some says its more painful going in.
It turns out some people lie.

Silas blinks and Scarf is here, looming, somehow crossing the fire-bathed distance unseen.

Scarf
A wanderers walking aid? Scarf once learned a trick from a one-armed warrior in a burning bar at the edge of a starving Reikan city.

Here! Put your hands like so. . .

>Spear Trick:
>Crossguard - Block squares equal to your reach
Scarf elaborates: " ... So others, behind you, get shelter from loose arrows and flying projectiles and you, in front, block a wider field!"

>Spear Trick:
>Stop Thrust - Reaction Strike stops target in its tracks
>Kinematics Trick:
>Roll - Add your Speed to Kinematics, then dodge through obstacles and hostiles. Will move you.

Scarf elaborates: So Kinematics 1.2 and Speed one is 2.2 - which for Dodging with 2 Alacrity would give you 4 dice. But you would also roll at least 2 spaces. "

Clay moves her hands one final time and then, with a soft wave through the air, stands. The firelight shimmers around her, shifting.

Paran scuttles manifold legs to move into a centre space, and acts as a translator. The chitter cadence of slightly mangled larynx adds an accent

. . . Clay is an archetheologist, thankful you fought off the Cerebovorando ants. The Killing caste was hunting. They have been disturbed lately, pushed to extremes of scavenge as something shifts in the Green. There is an illness in the air, spore laden winds carrying curious dreams.

This is why she does not want to release the wounds, the pain - it keeps sleep at bay.

A village is nearby. She will take us there.

But she wants to know, in turn, do we have an explanation for the Addled? For walking fools tumbling from byways through the Greenspan, turned host for parasitical tendrils burrowing into their souls and coring out their personalities?

>>3333347
As Clays fingers flash through lightning quick motions, Scarf breaks the silence with a long low laughter that rolls across the woods. They are ecstatic. Hands likes claws reach for the glimmering half-real knife of coalesced murderous intent.

Clay pauses her silent monologue to flick a pebble at Scarf. The laughter dies in the folds of Scarfs many robes.

. . . Someone leads the Addled but something else spits out the little winds that carry the dreams. Someone buried a House of the Gods in the mountains we fled. These things in tune are together, you loose-clad band of fools.

Scarf rubs at their swaddled head, pouting in the folds of their clothes.
>>
>>3333371
Silas pulls himself up with his spear and faces Clay.

"I can't quite explain the Addled, but I can explain the latter. That House of Gods, I don't know much about it or that term, but I think I know what you're talking about. When we were in that camp, I remembered that I was a soldier of the Legion sent into the Greenspan who used to reside in that camp. Our Theurges had established a laboratory underground, drilling deep until they hit and drew out the Sidereal, which they used to make those Ironclad Guardians and those horrifying Spitescorps, a perversion of the natural Cerebovorando. I can recall someone, I don't know who, talking about the latter. Anyway, I was sent with a team to find out why we hadn't word from the factory. I've repressed most of what happen, but they were subverted somehow and driven mad, their creations still being made and running wild. Only three of us got out, and only myself and another lived past a day. We tried to shut it off, threw everything we had at it, but given the many corpses of my comrades, the madness of the survivors, and the mess we currently are in, we assuredly failed. That damnable machine's heart is still beating, and I don't know what we're going to do about it."

He sighs, feeling relieved to let that out.

"Is that sufficient?"

There was an odd beauty in the human body the numbered man thought as he took the skull from its place and gazed into it.
The marks of impacted scars that dotted it coupled with the worn marks of past scars and the seeds told him a story of the previous owners life that no other person could quite understand unless they were in his soles.
Gazing long and hard into it the numbered man gave a soft smile, it truly was a work of art, but like any other piece it could be improved, it could be remade, sculpted again to something much grander than it was all it required was the sight to see and the will to do. Something that his compatriots were clearly unable to see as one of them gave a look of disgust as he treasured the raw piece of bone that he tore out of a dead corpse. Flesh was flesh and it would decay and rot but the bone was the revered treasure.
Taking a moment to pick out a sharp rock even if it was the same one he began with the numbered man began to work. This seed worn skull shall shine with the scrimshawed work of a tale, the tale of what happened there and who this soul might have been.

>Scrimshaw onto the seed worn skull a tale of what happened here, the fatigue of the fight, the terror of the beast and of the sacrifices around him. (Use a secret if it helps?)

The greatest trick of all, sought by every physician from Pyther to Pontiers!

Scarf has little to avail you there, Breaker-fist, for self-sufficiency is an art for stoics, ascetics and those who would fashion loneliness into a weapon. Not honest barter-folk who thrive of interdependence! The skittering bug-comrade can taste wounds and curious Clay bottle them for storage and Scarf collect the bone-written ache of adventure but... Scarf has no such art to fix oneself.

Unless . . .

>It appears Scarf cannot teach the tricks of purely self-directed healing. It might be some kind of flaw with the underlying structure of the universe, reliant as it is on Conditions being traded between people. That would imply pure first aid to mitigate own wounds could destabilise the entire edifice. What a cosmically dubious thought

>You throw your mind to less fundamental concerns!

There are those would stride and strive against the malign ministrations of monsters and men. Scarf could tell you the tale of Knights and Dragons and, for a price, Swords in the bargain . . .

The numbered man raised an eyebrow as he looked at the skull and thought about scarf's answer looking at the carvings spoke of the tale and he thought of what interest a collector may have. With acceptance he gave a grudging nod before he returned to carving it noticing a flaw that he must correct.

"I suppose that if I were to sell this to some collector it may fetch me a neat sum. But I am not so inclined to think of such mercantile means, the memories of those fallen should be preserved and remembered not simply carved to be thrown away to some aristocrat. A philosophy I am sure many artists may agree."

Checking the skull again to see if the flaw was corrected he smiled and returned the jagged stone to its place.

"Although I know that many artists have had to sell their precious work for coin and bit. After all a rememberer must be able to accommodate for themselves so that they do not end as the fallen. A memory can only be treasured and considered as such if it is done by the living, not by the dead. Giving it worth far beyond steel or gold."

congratulations, Sacrifice. You've changed class!

Acquire 1 new Trick from your new Class.
Because you're a changing into it, intentions and all such stay the same.

You also gain Glorious Endeavour, a Secret, and a rather special one besides - gain 1 Glory Condition whenever you take a turn. You can spend Glory as Alacrity and a host of other small tricks. Alas, Glory has its own momentum and to gain more, you must push yourself onwards...

The sunsoaked woods of this plane devour the bounty of the land and grow in their quiet majesty to choke out the skies above. Clay nods at small scraps of fallen veinwood. It grows bolder as we approach, building into a noxious assault on our senses. Wood and burning vine mix with the char-iron smell of singed corpses. Clay freezes in her steps.

Faint whispers of far screams roll along the deep woods. We haven't heard them until now, plucked from the air by moss and vine and the low hum of life.

as you approach, notice a soft change in the whirl of the wind.

After a bit of testing and checking, a little functionality from earlier games have been added.

You now have a Proficiency score (it is 1). Take a Proficiency action to automatically get a dicepool of your Secret + Intent. You can add Alacrity to this, if you'd like. There is probably a way to increase this, later.

Alacrity is lowered, but unchanged. And yes, it still multiplies itself with the rank of your secret (should you spend it on Secrets).

This allows a little higher growth on attributes without things getting out of control, reduce your movement a little bit, increase the value of speed, and have a few other, more interesting trade-offs including some operations of Tricks. It also reduces the total available range of most Meta-real Secretes, which can no longer strike you from across the map by taking 9 Fatigue and pumping 9 Alacrity into range.

Your Alacrity should be 5 and your Proficiency 1. This also means Limit is a little reduced - being a sum of all your attributes.

All the sly cunning tricks of light, of ways to means to ends, of little routes drawn by strange souls down meandering, curious pathways.

It is the innate knowledge of how not to be there. Through pain, through hardship, through responsibility, through attachment, through vagaries of chance, through the flightpath of an arrow intended for your heart, the prodding blind grasping of the Hooded Collector of Souls...

Simply stepping out of the way is something any would-be thug with a blunt stick can learn in the Legio training forts or the warcamps of the Rieks. Avoidance is the very gently absence of your Self.

So yes

In the distance a short shrieking sound is cut abruptly short. Addled waddle near the small fence that marks the entrance to the Wilder village, aimlessly swinging blunt blades back and forth. Some break from the pack to begin a long loop around the area.

Someone burst from the flames further in - weaves past the guards, zigs when fated wanted a zag and goes down with no time to cry out. The corpse twitches once and then is still. The Addled stare at it. One begins to shuffle closer.

Paran grabs a stray speck of light and wills it into a simulacra of grass and rock. The ambush predator coiled in the strands of protein and other gunk that makes up the innards of their soul sends a low spark of profound joy through the bundled nerve-wires of their soul.

Precisely so. It could be more obvious. Will attempt to make it clear.

In this case, 1 AL is spent on maintaining the Stance, 1 Al is a step, 1 PR swings for 1 Harm + 2 Scavenger (3dice), 3 AL swings again (6 Dice, since Scavenger), and 4 Push is banked to React with a Dodge.

Rolling 12 and 37 is 2 hits, which means 3 Blunt + 1 Harm + 1 hit
>wait, +1?
>Yeah, the first hit (12) is what triggers the "connecting blow", so that counts as the blunt 3 + harm.

We see the efficacy of this fine action. . .

The Addled clutched in 1023's grasp struggles, pitting strength against strength. It cannot use its weapon when grabbed in close quarters and swings its shield which is taken on the skull - which holds. One arrow from behind the lines careen into the rock behind 1023's head. What a convenient human shield.

One Addled slumps forward to strike at Sacnite who, wisely, ducks behind a rock. This leaves an opening for Scryansi, who glides into the fray - the Addled is left reeling, overcome with pain.

>That Addled is in Agony, pain past limits to endure! Strike now!

Silas feels a dire impact shatter against their spine but the ingenuity of the far factories producing plate to shield and guard is well worth the discomfort that the heavy plate bring. The killing blow is reduced to a mere discomfortable bruise.

Oh, like so. That is a bit misleading. We'll have Scarf go shout at the underpaid elves doing all the copy-editing.

The +3 Blunt is the Scavenger bonus! That's the outcome of improvising a solution; it was just accounted for when the action to flip the rifle over and wield it was resolved. In essence, in scavenging a solution from the item, the improvised use at greater effect was triggered.

You then spend Alacrity on Secrets. You get as many dice per Alacrity as your rank. With 2 Scavenger, that's 2 dice per Alacrity. Great bonus! Spend 3 Alacrity, roll 6 dice.

Manifold legs make light travel, and Paran skitters up the little bank of mud and dirt and lovingly engraved stone that make up this small elevation. Further up, a small wooden building overlooks the village, raised very high. A supremely defensible position.

In the cluster of violence that shrouds the entrance, silence falls following a blitzing shock. Staggered from Sacnites cunning blow, the Addled near the rock sways and then, Scryansi steps in. Shadows part as easily as flesh in a sudden explosion of light.

>The Glimmershard feeds on the Addled! +2 AL this turn

Silas executes a deft sweep, setting up their opponent for a takedown. The spear drives in readily. Something about the spores must make them soft on the inside, bones brittle. 1023 opts for a practical demonstration, twisting grinding wristbones just so. A sword falls to the ground.

The Addled in 1023's grasp attempts a punch that glances off of the pauldron.

Then its friend? Kin? Associate? Peer? shoots it in the back of the head by entirely fortuitous accident.

Thick clumps of greedvine are entwined around the emaciated forms of the Addled, as if they had a symbiotic kinship with the soft tendrils you crush underfoot.

But looking deeper -- there -- near the eye, from beneath that ragged scrap of cloth... Tiny fungal tendrils from the spore laden wind that blows around The Pit. And now you see it. The Addled are covered in a fine, barely perceptible moss that shifts with their movements, a replacement for hair. It billows around them. It is easy to mistake for long hair grown by the lack of a barbers fine attentions but... not now that you have seen.

The Addled aren't wearing anything.
The Addled are being worn by some parastic spore that has taken root in their bodies.

You feel an unceasingly strong desire for a torch.

You consider that you are holding one very fine tool for long range corrective neuro-surgery.

Other means... yes... maybe...

[3 hits, base 3]

Some insidious means have taken root in these Addled. Judging from the poor Legios left at the Outpost of 12th, and the energy these display one solution seeking soul can make the following quick conclusions:

Something here must be leading the Addled to make them display a modicum of Tactics and Ability

The Addled are the Spores, in a sense, not the poor victims caught by the Infection.

This means it may be possible to burn it out, root, tendril and brain-blooming flower all. For those too long exposed, metabolic cessation is the finest mercy possible. For those in early stages of exposure, plucking the seeds out will do. For the intermediary cases... fire, panacea, internal purging, toxins, herbicide, surgery. The trick will be to defray the rot and root without unduly damaging the mental substrate of the person. Had we a SURGERY KIT or a FIRST AID KIT, fine manipulation would be possible.

Can we improvise some other means, then... maybe.

Perhaps they have news! But without being closer, each and all are too unfamiliar. Gravity. Why wield weapons when mere physics will do?

Samsa strides forward as Scryansi swings an underhanded deadly dart - the projectile shattering into a greentinged shower of fragments coated with vein-burn poison. Samsa, taking the thing on their backplate, feels a slight twinge of discomfort.

>+1 Pain.

Silas vaults forward to deliver a report and, seeing as they are on the spot already, cuts down one of the Addled. As this one falls, a sweeping look over the plaza reveals a gently undulating horde

The Addled clash against a hastily organised ring of worn out soldiers wielding battered shields, protected by scratched armor. A make-shift shieldwall blocks the primary access, but the Addled are numerous and arrows fly from far-off snipers, slapping against the ground in rhythmic cascades.

A young officer paces in the small space afford to them, snapping commands in an effort to maintain some semblance of tactical cohesion. These men look like they have been fighting for days but they go about their task with grim determination.

One spares a quick look at Silas but there is little recognition in their eyes. They snap a quick salute, and take the chance to suck down lungfuls of air to power burn-out muscles.

" RAVAGERS, MAN! ARE YOU THE REINFORCEMENTS??? GET ME OUTTA HERE! "

>Silas gains +1 Discipline

--

Brandishing someone's head (in rather dire need of cleaning) towards the sky, 1023 has just enough peripheral vision to notice the arrow now sticking out of their chest.

Aw.

>1023 suffers +1 Pain

--

Sacnite finds that this area of the village is quieter. Smoke falls from the roof but the fire does not seem to truly take, a preposterous, meaningless notion, as if the house itself resists the attempts at burning. From within the building rolls a subtle snapping sound of beasts barking, growling...

An Addled unlike the rest steps forward. Thick plate is wrapped around its gargantuan bulk - survivors from the Pit see it clear, a Greenspan Knight in miniature, all vine-coiled sinew and spore-fed muscle, towering above its smaller kin.

One of the Legio snaps around to bark at Silas but takes a staggering fist clean through their block - they stumble back, down, land hard on the path with a cracking of bone. In the press of bodies elsewhere, one fighter attempts to ward off blows and blows but even exceptional reflexes have a natural limit.

Excellent use of a proficiency.

Fragile* is a reference to the nature of the material and its construction. Some things get a little tag that is a reminder to the world of how they operate. In the case of 1023's pauldrons, carved displays make them *Storied. Some things do care about this.

Meanwhile, Fragile indicates that this object can break or suffer damage at an accelerate rate, or that when subject to conditions it cannot be handle, it has a chance of snapping. This is related to Misfortune building up and may lead to breakages, or if the object in question is used in a particularly stressful way such as parrying heavy blows. If it took more damage in one go than it had stats to resist it would likely be reduced in efficiency or even broken.

(For the Rifle Butt Stock and other parts of the rifle, we see it has blunt 3 + reach 2, and so these count as its full stats for the purpose of resistance. This is because 3 Blunt + 2 Reach naturally give us a Limit of 5)

Because it is also possible to attack, interact with or handle equipment, this is important. Non-fragile equipment has much the same Limit (A Scarred Brigadine also equals 5) but, being non-fragile, any complications and consequences of increasing damage will be less severe or, for the purposes of easy living and smooth universal functioning and a reduction in general despair, not a problem.

Aided by the shoulder of a fellow, Legio Nickas takes his place on the line again and, turning, slams the heavy shield into the backplate the Halberd Addled. Gravity takes over and, from above, in a dropkick worthy of poets, Nickas follows a second time. The landing is softer, in a sense. Beneath him, the Halberd Addled struggles, unable to stand but not looking particularly dissuaded by the course of events.

On the roof, one poor Wilder with tribal tattoes down the length of their arms cough bits of fungus up from hurt lungs and waves their arms at Paran.

The Addled stream forward. 1023 blocks a volley of rough arrows, trading a few scraps and bruises for a nice collection of straight veinwood shafts.

#Scrablade [Blade] Heft 2

You notice clearly that the weapon is pitted with rust and blunter than it needs to be. The factory mass produced iron has not taken kindly to the humidity of this place, and the Addled do not manifest any inclination towards proper care of their equipment. This used to be the pride of a soldier on the march but is now little more than a blunt club that occasionally manages maim someone.

Vostin, the Unseen, lies in the blindspace on the edge of vision, guiding and pushing and prodding. It is a divinity of Hunters, of Rangers, of the Forest and the Green and the Ambush, of Surprise, of the Unexpected and of the Loss Unacknowledged. The beasts in repose in the temple-structure pay quiet homage to the statue at the end of the building, each breathing smoke as it burns. Some of them look worse for wear.

Loyal hunting dogs, these.

Errant Samsa stands with sword hand and faces down a horde that boils across the conqoured plaza. Arrows swirl overhead, one clatter against their armour. it is soon followed by a rain of blade and blows.

The Halberd Addled shifts, lurches, bleeds from a piercing blow and stands. With a yelp, Legio Nickas falls. He does not get to stand again.

Each little spore is a universe unto itself, a sacrosanct solipsistic godking of all it surveys.

You have no link to other, deeper spores.

But you do have a like material and a testing bed for counter-toxins.

A clash of arms is interrupted by a pair of mandibles peeking over the beset Legion Patrol Post. Theroasin, caught up in the adrenaline of the moment near takes Paran's head off but restrains their panicked counter-slash when Paran speaks. Sprays of blood act as the medium to push at the fortitude of the soldiers still standing. Pain lessens, wounds close.

Paran jumps through fire across a a gangway and down and down. Gravity takes its toll for the allowance of passage.
>That Was A Really Big Drop, Ouch
>Some Fatigue converts to Wounds, Pain

--

Silas shoulderchecks a Halberd Addled off of a ledge, who falls and becomes near unconscious with pain but the damnable thing is not yet defeated. Samsa steps in with a mighty blow against the other and Silas provides and opening. A telling blow cuts clean through the massive armor plates of the Halberd Addled - but how, how does it still stand? It spits a cloud of fungal corruption and raises its weapon to counter-strike! These things must be the Godkings of the Addled hordes, breakers of gates and barred ways.

... HIT IT AGAIN

Scryansi quietly removes another Addled from existence, and in the doing, the Glimmershard hums with jubilant joy.

1023 begins to pick up a certain rhythm to the rain of arrows.
>+1 Shield Secret

And from the shadows of the house steps a sword Addled, charging into a swing. Not much different to block, just a difference of pressure -- There. Easy.

For now.

--

n the roof a Wilder comes to their senses and, shouted at by the officer below, takes a shot at the Horde. Addled fall but the counter-attack is fierce, the defenders thinning one by one.

The massive Halberd Addled lunges forward and slams into Samsa, who stumbles just enough that one foot slips off the edge of a ledge and then gravity takes over, they come to a skittering scraped halt beneath a trio of raised impaled Wilders, put into the sky by as an effigy to malice. On the wind, a pheremone soaked lash coils around a person somewhat easterly on a ledge.

One without tell-tale sign of spore-wracked infection. Guarded by a host of Cerebovorando Killing Caste. Samsa has enough wherewithal to notice, also, the stomping steps of a third Halberd Addled moving in.

--

One of the Vostin's Chosen tilts its head back and forth as it scratches at the air, soft fur rippling in the wind. It looks at Scryansi, not unkindly, but locks eyes with the shimmering shard of sharpness held in their hands. Then...

Bows its head in deference to a fellow predator.

The Halberd Addled steps in, cruel weapon raised high with malign intent. Samsa lashes out. The stained plate worn over heavy muscles parts all too readily, easily, the blade willing itself deeper into the flesh of the Halberd Addled who, surprised, has the interesting sensation of their upper half continuing in the few moments before they lose consciousness in a permanent way.

The blade seems to drink in the pain. Samsa hears... is that laughter?

>Recover 1 Wound!

--

1023 tries to strip a human skull of flesh and bits in the fray of melee and is rewarded by the Addled striking out at them for their trouble.

>Try not to take complicated, attention requiring actions while a man is attempting to murder you.

--

The fires eating slowly away at the village receive a little extra sweat-stained spark of fuel. Whirling the spear around it describes a coruscating arc of brilliance through the air as it slams against the heavy-set Addled.

--

In Vostins Sacred Chapel, Scryansi reaches out to run a grass-wrapped hand through the soft shining fur of a beast that up close appears to be the amalgamation of mythological canines and the lions that guard the temples of Oshinish, all sleek lines and killing intent.

But the fur is so soft. A low rumble travels through Scryansi hand as the creature rolls a growl deep through their lungs. Multiple eyes turn to track Scryansi.

--

. . . This delightful body is resilient, much to Paran's fond delight. And if we stretch it just like so...

>>
Scryansi gently lowers their hand from nuzzling the wolven creature and as they prepare to turn around and return to battle, feel the scratch of long claws running over their threads of their cloak.

Time to go. Definitively time to go--

The Wolven have other plans
>>
They howl in tongues unknown and bark in guttural flickers of sound that lashes. The shadows flicker, moved by some great unseen beast that glares down.

The moss-green, vine-wrapped statue of
ancient rock is undisturbed by the frolic of its little servants. Undisturbed by the flames even now eating into this chapel. It is above it all, too old and ancient and anchored in the oceans of time to deal with such lesser concerns as smoke inhalation and burn scars
>>
And then they bare their teeth.

Scryansi feels the faint familiar flickers of terror in their gut. So... large. Sharp. Is that a shred of flesh clinging to that set over there? They loom closer

They bite. But the pain is not an explosion across Scryansi flesh. Blood drips on the stone of the Chapel. The Wolven, offering tribute. Ten pairs of eyes stare at Scryansi.

... Religious ceremonies are always so complicated to the uninitiated, are they not?
>>
They wait, jaws clamped on their own flesh, claws extended to drag grooves along the ground in which their own vital fluid slowly drips.

A fountain nearby shimmers with coalesced potential. The statue sings softly, rolling waves of shadow and moonlight washed across Scryansi' inner ears. The glimmering shard clutched in hand shifts in a waving pattern, resonating with the potential of the place.

Tribute, escape, or slow intoxication by the pull of smoke into lungs with each breath?
>>

A broken Halberd Addled rises from the minirature crater that it has shaped into the earth and steps toward Sacnite and Scarf. It reaches out, wrapping massive hands flecked through with green around Scarfs throat and lifts the poor salesman? off their feet. Scarf feels the sting of terror at the sudden intrusion of physical activity.

--

One of the Masked barks a quick order and a Halberd Addled shuffles towards Paran! Spotted at last! But an order? Spoken out loud! This man still maintains some semblance of self! Is this the guiding hands of this awkward horde?

--

Samsa experiences quite a lot of arrows coming quite close.

Paran wards off a gruelling arc chop. Why must this form have such exquisite pain receptors? Perhaps a flaw of design that can be fixed, remedied, overcome - for now, agony flows through the sensory systems. But poison flows through the Addled Halberdier, who, wracked with it, spasms and has their attack thrown off just enough that killing intent is dulled.

Surgeon could cut out the infection if it was a mere smal Addled but the hAlberdiers are consumed by the Spores, they are the spores, pushed on by the heavy hand of tendrils wrapped around their brainstem, muscles fed by thick tentacles of green fungi forcing a heart to beat stronger with continually grasping constriction.

it comes apart in Sacnites sight, falling to bits.

Theorasin finds their voice and their courage and barks a quick order. Clay slides forward and bows her head reverently towards the Legionaires that have helped fight off the worst excess of violence against her village. She practically genuflects as she runs a soft hand across wounds sustained in battle, gathers them up and then sprints north with a lightning quick-sideways step.

A bottle arcs through the air, hits an Addled Archer and shatters. Sympathetic transference.

--

Scryansi is marked by the mob of Addled Archers holding their ground on the Eastern Flank. In the far town on the otehr side of the River, two Masked slowly retreat. Their forces are broken. Their rearguard will delay the enemy until they have made good their escape to report to some far taskmaster about their failure.

OOC:

Right you may be confused on how to determine what is friend and foe.
I can help with that.
I will provide two examples of dead enemies along with a alive player and a dead player.

Blue circles on the field are chars that are alive and kicking. They are generally perceived as freindly and you should treat them as such.

Red circles however can vary, as they are either NPC's or are enemies.
You can generally tell the difference between the two if you notice a name on them.
If they have a name with a white lining to them they are an npc! Treat them with some friendliness and a healthy amount of suspicion!

Now dead bodies.
As the game goes on people will die, it is important to know the diffrence between a dead body or a living one.

You can generally tell the diffrence between the two based on two things.
One: Are they greyed out entirely? If so this means they have been slain!!
Two: Do they not have a white lining to them? If they do they are alive!!!! If not they are dead and you are welcome to step over their corpse!.

These two things should help you determine what is friend and foe, and what is alive or dead.
Heres a image!!! With some examples being 1023's dead corpse, along with Sansa the errant next to some slain foes and corpses we found when we arrived.

Also explaining your conditions!!!
Generally I rely on CompanyCommand for updating it on the map, but sometimes he can make mistakes and that is okay!
But when he doesen't and you suddenly receive a bunch of arrows to the chest it pays to know which is which!!!

Red numbers are Wounds, they are your physical damage. Too many wounds and you can die! Like 1023 did when he took 4 arrows to the chest!

Orange numbers is pain! Getting hit hurts! But most of the time it won't kill you outright. Pain represents well how much your hurting atm!!

Purple numbers is your terror! Too much terror and you will probably have a heart attack!! But otherwise a little terror shouldent isn't bad, we're all scared on the inside in this big wide world.
My guess is that the yellow dots is your glory!! Valiant efforts my friend you may spend them how you wish!

And lastly the blue numbers is how tired you are! Too much fatigue and you will collapse onto the ground!

Here is another image that should help with explaining it!
>>
>>3347735
"Scarf Damage" is average ordinary Pain, for future reference.

Little Red Numbers are Wounds. They drive you towards death. They are one of the most problematic conditions because they kill you.
>Consequences of wounds are bleeding, pain, fatigue, maiming, that kind of thing. Also? Death.

Little Orange Numbers are Pain. They push you towards suffering.
>Consequences of pain are fatigue and general suffering. Pain adds as a ToHit bonus on physical actions targeting the person in pain, ensuring they will soon find more of it.

Purple Numbers are Misfortune. Not Terror. It makes the universe hate you, but the influence of accidents and mistakes is seldom lethal on its own.
>Misfortune bias the world against you, such that its rolled as a dicepool to trigger events, added as a bonus to things going wrong or increasing the probability of problems.

Blue is Fatigue. Fatigue makes you tired and sets how much you can push and eventually leads to unconsciousness.
>Fatigue leads to loss of stamina and unconsciousness.

Tiny Yellow Dots are glory. Those are added in just because sometimes people forget to generate their Glory on their turn, and it would feel like a cheat if they did not get it. I can stop tracking them if it gets confusing.

Tiny Red Dots are Bleeding. They hit you for Wounds and Pain at the end of your turn. They need to be staunched. Bleeding is deadly. Bleeding will kill you.

In the grand scheme of things, you don't have cause to worry about much but Wounds, Pain and Fatigue. Wounds is worse than Pain which is worse than Fatigue.

Attacks and Events hit and inflict different amounts of this stuff. It's really simple and depends on the efficacy of your weapon. A Blunt, Badly Maintained Scragblade wielded by an Addled deals Pain and Fatigue. A Firewatch Spear is sharp and hits for Pain and Wounds. A rock is blunt and deals Pain and Fatigue. Resist works against this, so if you get hit in the face with a rock you take [X] Pain and [X]-[Resist] Fatigue.

The Gift is *Lethal and deals Wounds first and foremost, Bleeding after and Maiming if you're getting a real good hit.

>This means if you have a Rock in one and The Gift in the other and strike a target with 1 Resist with 4 hits for both implements the outcome is:

>The Rock deals 4 Pain and 3 Fatigue.
>The Gift deals 4 Wounds, 3 Bleed, 2 Maim.

You don't really have to worry about the numbers, that's why Command lists your Stats on the update and resolves it automatically when things happen.

The quick example demonstrates that killing someone with a Rock would take a fair bit of effort, breaching Limits of Fatigue and Pain to bash someone into unconsciousness, after which you can begin to slowly pound out their skull.

Murdering with a Lethal blade is far, far too easy.

There are other conditions. Green dots are poison. Black numbers are Terror. Infection, Confusion, Hunger, Thirst, it all stacks up, but don't worry about it

Words seem to fail Theorasin. He seems a man forced to deal with a weight of worldly proportions. Silas catches a quick flicker of eyes towards the Legio stoically sharpening his blade nearby. Theorasin snaps a quick battle sign and the Legio steps closer.
He has not resheated his sword.

... That armor isn't yours, is it? You are not a Stalwart, even if you fight like one. I appreciate the aid. We have been pressed sorely by the Addled, and the village has taken a grim toll of the dying since the order to evacuate.

But you say the Pit, Wanderer. The 12th went there to secure the Mawspire Facility. But if you wear the armor of a 12th Stalwart, and you say you report from there - what of Fortisini?

The Stalwart Armor belongs to a Stalwart Spear, who must have been behind to organise the Outpost. You wrack your teeming memory and recall that there were several such officers in at the force deployed, but, no, out of the many corpses and the mewling Addled besides that dotted the Pit and the Legio Camp, Fortisini was not among them.

What then---

NOW. SOLDIER. IN THE FACILITY. WHAT OF THE OPERANT SOUL?

WHAT OF THE OPERANT SOUL?

THE OPERANT SOUL?

THE SOUL?

The dark below and all its awe-inspiring horrors. They marched into it, with torches and hope. You know THE SOUL?this. You saw this. You were there forTHE SOUL? this. Cossus was not the last to fall. But in the shadows, it gets hazy. The Rot at the core of the Servitors, the spawning vats, the anchors fraying and releasing the THE SOUL?. In your throat, a recollection of THE SOUL?spiced wind that cloy and cling with every breath and--

Refocus.

Kalcmir is the largest city in the area, home and hearth to a thousand milling civilians, a little prick of civilisation clinging to the coast of the Aikan interior. The 12th guards it, and other outlying townships. Every day a fresh new horror and every day a little more land is reclaimed by the happy might of commerce and properly planned city-streets.

Headquarters is in Kalcmir. But a Scholae is not a commander of ten-thousand troops, and to turn around and march a cohort against the people they are sworn to protect? A maddened notion. Someone would surely stop him.

If... they could think for themselves. If they maintained unaddled purpose.
>>
>>3349376
>>3349071
Silas's eyes go wide with horror. "No,no,no,no,no,no,t-they...Damn it, stupid stupid stupid we should have held back foolish..." Silas burns with guilt having advised the charge that caused this, before he cleared up. Jibbering couldn't fix this mess. "Captain..." Silas took a large gulp before speaking this. "When we attempted to retake the facility, I suppose the Scholae and a portion of the 12 succumbed to a different kind of influence than the Plantmen. The same horrible purpose that warped the facility in the first place, the affected guards weren't Addled, at least to my memory. Though maybe they are Plantmen, and the kind that were smart enough to siege a village like this."
>>
>>3349402
There is silence, then, for a while. Theorasin sinks to the ground, slowly deflating. Overcome by the terror of recent days

" Thank you for your report, Soldier. "

There is a quiet lingering ring of metal on metal as the soldier behind Silas sheaths their blade.

" The Addled have clawed at the Green and the villages here for weeks. You see the impaled? In the plaza? Murderers. Violators. Yet. Not

my proudest

moment. I did not know that this wasn't crime. It's a feverish infection. It sneaks into your head. Into your dreams. And then you wander and breathe on others and... Logging camps have disappeared. Travellers gone. Some of the villages have travelled to Fort Scorpspire, for safety. We were here to aid. The Theurge attached to my patrol went raving mad, spoke of voices in the light. Ran. I've lost six soldiers to night raids. The Addled come for the people. Drag them away. More Addled return.

And your Scholae... The 12th. Parts of it. Gone rogue.

Allied with the Addled. Or, at worst, overcome. And we are lost"

The stores are nigh depleted and as you can imagine neither supply shipments nor foraging parties have been much aid. We will spare what rations we can. We owe you that much.

We intend to move this haphazard band to Fort Scorpspire once we have recovered. Little is left here, and the Wilders can return to their village once the world is calm. If it ever is.

This village is known as wavey hand motion that makes my wrist hurt, but we just call it Staging Point Three. I know. Didn't pick the name. We're closer to the Mawspire but Scorpspire is several days from here... here, let me draw you a map...

They set to their grim task with soft determination. The piles grow. Some wounded are rescued. Some are too far gone for anything but the iron cure. Bandages are in short supply. Improvisation is called for before too long.

Aided by the quiet tenacity of the soldiers the villagers who are not too injured fan out and help too. In the background the flames gently spread, smoke obscuring the area beyond the river. The fire is growing out of control and several paths become uncrossable to all but someone of Sacnites singular talents.

Collecting greedvine to secure the bindings, a low cry of despair flows over the sound of the flames. A trio of lost villagers caught in a cinder-guarded hiding spot, reduced to coughing fits by stinging smoke. One of the soldiers nearby joins in, is badly burnt for the effort. Together, it is just enough that no more stretchers are needed beyond those already allotted.

A quiet moment in repose to consider our actions and our deeds. It lifts the spirits, this. The scent of ripe berries overflow in this room, buffeted around by the river below the planks. The Idol here is larger than the rough-cut-approximation of fangs that were Vostin's, the features softer, long wings of sky-swept purple enclosing the room.

There is a moment of eye contact as Samsa glances up at the Statue. A shuddering in the mind. Something gorges on the offer scraps of experience.

Clay seems imminently satisfied, still chattering away in her little personal lexicon.

——

The Fallen are piled aside from the wounded on stretchers. The villagers move about as they sort through the wreckage of their lives.

Some spare a few lingering looks at Scryansi, whispering amongst themselves.

Clay moves among the throng, guiding and providing aid to the few wounded she can.

Theorasin and his soldiers begin breaking out stale hardtack as they break down their post for transport. They share what gloriously tasteless rations they have. The post is well stocked. Some armaments are shared with the villagers. Others, we could INVESTIGATE THE USE OF. Most we will have to leave.

Samsa feels the glittering brush of attention and knows somehow that the The Moth of the Night is reaching for its counterpart in the Beast of the Day and finding nothing. Vostin is quiet. WONDER WHY.

The fire rages out of control.

We catch our breaths and recover, bit by bit. Others begin the grim accounting.

--

Tibethia fashions a sly little garment from loose scraps and bits of ever-present red cloth. Surely the Legion won't notice that one of their surprisingly soft flags have gone missing? They weren't using it for anything anyway!

>>3351226
It is much like chasing prey through a cavern system. It dodges and evades and when pressed into arterial corners and neuronal traps, fights backs with tiny claws and stings of acidic release. They have been breathing the air for a long, long time. But some seem less susceptible. Perhaps the Addled from earlier had some predisposition towards becoming the unthinking murderous tools of a maddened Scholae?

Your countenance does not make for easy bedside manner. The villagers do not seem to mind, over much, even if the otherwise staunch Legion flinches at every mandible wave.

But then that Masked had Cerebovorando Killing Caste Guardians, and Clay were hunted by them. They may be more used to the appearance of tall killers.

Clay runs a long finger across the edge of her mask then taps it twice against herself before reaching out to wrap slender digits around one of Paran's manipulators. With her free her she does very much nothing at all . . .

The Attention of the Moth of Night and the Icon of Sightless Seeing, sometimes called TrDrak, sometimes called the Hungering Dark, sometimes called Shadows and by the Vanadian Bluecoats called Umbratheurgy. It is the arts of Unlight and Far Reaches, terrifying only in implication, strong only in absence, bolstering that which it takes away and apt to feel for negative space. It is not the Anthesis of light, but its happy counter-part. TrDrak and Vostin are twins, in this. Twins at war. But twins.

To let Shadows in is easy, they are already inside, coiled in the dark spots around your heart, flush in the empty space between avioli, dancing in gaps in your brain-matter in electro-chemical lockstep with your thoughts.

Trade a Secret for a Secret, and you can Know.

Every X. So Paired 5% gets you a pair dice every 5%. As for Feeding... it is what it is. Sometimes you steal, sometimes you cut, sometimes you wound, sometimes you claw at the hunger and take your fill. One imagines that Wounds will kill but Feeding past someone's Limit is an entirely different category of terminal.

Samsa loses 7 Night Favour. The opaque waters grow clearer as Potential is bleed into the metal. Neither sigilplate nor bond metal, the odd reverberation fades into a partial uptake, a semi-reshaping.

Well that went rather well, didn't it?

Perhaps we should not let the villagers know that we are leeching the gathered flowing power of their Icons too readily.

But it is a smidge curious. Where are the Priests and the Watchers and the Attendants for all these lost temples? What happened to the flock that would worship in this place?

Clay accepts your offer gracefully, and offers you some scatter-piece instruction. Not knowing the Full Rank, the proper application may be a little problematic to achieve. But one can make do.

You can't... you can't just leave them like this. Straighten them out, close their eyes, make sure the soldiers have their weapons and the rest something important. Do you want those things to infect your friends and puppet them around when we are gone?

Tibethia looked at her newfound dress and hugged it a small tear streaming down her face. Ignorant to the world going to hell around her she quickly sidled off to a private corner of the village and quickly changed.
>The dress is emerald green, with the hem of the dress being red and having a triangle pattern to it! (I think thats the right terms)

Idily flicking a orb of fire in her hand as a test, and tying her hair back with a length of string, Tibethia remembered a old saying that confidence bears suit with the way one dresses and smiled at least something was going right this day.
